CEO, China

The Rise of Xi Jinping Kerry Brown Meet the most powerful man in China China remains a powerhouse of the world economy, whatever its internal economic problems. Its incredible boom in this generation has been overseen by the elite members of the secretive and all-powerful communist party. But since the election of Xi Jinping as General Secretary, life at the top in China has changed. Under the guise of a corruption crackdown, which has seen his rivals imprisoned, Xi Jinping has been quietly building one of the most powerful leaderships modern China has ever seen. In CEO China, the noted China expert Kerry Brown reveals the hidden story of the rise of the man dubbed the ‘Chinese Godfather’. Brown investigates Xi Jinping’s relationship with his revolutionary father, who was expelled by Mao during the Cultural Revolution, his business dealings and allegiances in China’s regional power struggles and his role in the internal battle raging between the old men of the Deng era and the new super-rich ‘princelings’. Xi Jinping’s China is powerful, assertive and single-minded and this book will become a must-read for the Western world.

Aleppo

The Rise and Fall of Syria’s Great Merchant City Philip Mansel A celebration of the history of Aleppo, now a tragic casualty of Syria’s civil war Aleppo is now a city in ruins, bombed by the Syrian air force, threatened by ISIL, its population decimated. But it was once a world city. Philip Mansel reveals the little-known but vibrant history of Aleppo, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, for the first time in English. Collating a rich array of contemporary accounts by British and French consuls and merchants who for 400 years called Aleppo home, Mansel uncovers a cultural melting pot, famed in the Ottoman Empire for its souks, its food and its music. We learn how Aleppo was a crossroads of East and West, where Muslims, Christians and Jews lived and traded together in peace for five centuries. In this timely book Philip Mansel describes Aleppo’s decline from a pinnacle of cultural and economic power. It is a poignant testament to a city shattered by war.

NEW

The New Generation of Jihadis and the Threat to the West peter R. neumann Leading security commentator reveals the true extent of the terrorist threat that lives among us The attacks in Paris in January and November 2015 heralded the beginning of a new wave of terrorism – one rooted in the ongoing conflict in Syria and Iraq. As ISIS seeks to expand its reach in the Middle East, its territory serves as a base for training and operations for a new generation of jihadis. Thousands of young people from the West, primarily from Europe, have travelled to join ISIS, re-emerging as hardened fighters with military training and a network of international contacts. Many of these have now returned to their homelands, where it is feared they are planning a new series of brutal attacks. Peter R. Neumann here explains the phenomenon of the ‘new jihadis’, and shows why the threat of terrorism in the West is greater than ever before. Based on interviews and previously unseen material, Neumann provides an essential introduction to one of the greatest crises of our time.

Rage and Revolution in Modern Turkey Kaya Genç An insight into a divided society at the crossroads of the Middle East Turkey stands at the crossroads of the Middle East – caught between the West, ISIS, Syria and Russia, and governed by an increasingly hard-line leader. Acclaimed writer Kaya Genç has been covering his country for the past decade. In Under the Shadow he meets activists from both sides of Turkey’s political divide: Gezi park protestors who fought tear gas and batons to transform their country’s future, and supporters of Erdogan’s conservative vision who are no less passionate in their activism. While talking to Turkey’s angry young people Genç weaves in historical stories, visions and mythologies, showing how Turkey’s progressives and conservatives take their ideological roots from two political movements born in the Ottoman Empire, fuelled by a determination to make their country more democratic. He shows a divided society coming to terms with the 21st Century, and in doing so, gets to the heart of the compelling conflicts between history and modernity in the Middle East.

Irregular War

NEW

Islamic State and the New Threat from the Margins Paul Rogers Is ISIS the new face of war? If ISIS can overrun powerful states in a matter of weeks, what kind of a secure future can the world expect? After more than a decade of the war on terror, security specialists believed that Islamist paramilitary movements were in decline. They were wrong. The threat from ISIS in Syria and Iraq, Boko Haram in Nigeria, al-Qaida in Yemen, the chaos in Libya and the return of the Taliban in Afghanistan have all shown that the West is once again on a collision course in the Middle East. Paul Rogers, the distinguished global security specialist, provides a much-needed look at the rise of such global terrorist movements from the margins and presents a new argument as troubling as it is compelling. While ISIS has taken root in the Middle East and North Africa and has increasing impact across the world as thousands of young men and women rally to its cause, Rogers argues that it should be seen not just as a threat in its own right but as a marker of a much more dangerous world riddled with irregular war.

Why Cold War Again?

NEW

How America Lost Post-Soviet Russia Stephen F. Cohen Essential account of the new East-West crisis from renowned Russia analyst Stephen F. Cohen The new East-West conflict, which broke out over the Ukrainian crisis in 2014, but which long predated it and soon spread through Europe and to the Middle East, is potentially the worst US-Russian confrontation in more than fifty years – and the most fateful. A negotiated resolution is possible, but time may be running out. In this book, renowned Russia scholar and media commentator Stephen F. Cohen traces the history of this East-West relationship in the ‘Inter Cold War’ period – the years from the purported end of the preceding Cold War, in 1990-1991, to what he has long argued would be a new and even more dangerous Cold War. Cohen’s historical and contemporary analysis is insightful, thought-provoking and essential reading for anyone seeking to understand relations between the West and post-Soviet Russia.

roots and culture

NEW

Cultural Politics in the Making of Black Britain eddie chambers Expressions of Black British identity in art, literature, music and protest How did a distinct and powerful Black British identity emerge? In the 1950s, when many Caribbean migrants came to Britain, there was no such recognised entity as ‘Black Britain.’ Yet by the 1980s, the cultural landscape had radically changed, and a remarkable array of creative practices such as theatre, poetry, literature, music and the visual arts gave voice to striking new articulations of BlackBritish identity. This new book chronicles the extraordinary blend of social, political and cultural influences from the mid1950s to late 1970s that gave rise to new heights of BlackBritish artistic expression in the 1980s. Eddie Chambers relates how and why during these decades ‘West Indians’ became ‘Afro-Caribbeans,’ and how in turn ‘Afro-Caribbeans’ became ‘Black-British’ – and the centrality of the arts to this important narrative. The British Empire, migration, Rastafari, the Anti-Apartheid struggle, reggae music, dub poetry, the ascendance of the West Indies cricket team and the coming of Margaret Thatcher – all of these factors, and others, have had a part to play in the compelling story of how the African Diaspora transformed itself to give rise to Black Britain.

The Secret Life of the Georgian Garden

NEW

Beautiful Objects and Agreeable Retreats Kate Felus Revealing social life in the Georgian pleasure garden The Georgian landscape garden has been hailed as the greatest British contribution to European art. It has traditionally been seen as a beautiful composition created from grass, trees and water, and perhaps a little sterile. But scratch beneath the surface and history reveals they were a lot less serene and a great deal more exciting. This book about the social life of the Georgian garden reveals its previously untold secrets. It explains how by the eighteenth century there was a desire to escape the busy country house where privacy was at a premium, and how these gardens evolved aesthetically, with modestly sized, far-flung temples and other eye-catchers, to cater for escape and solitude as well as food, drink, music and fireworks. Its publication coincides with the tercentenary of the birth of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, arguably Britain’s greatest ever landscape gardener, and the book is uniquely positioned to put Brown’s work into its social context.

the rise and fall of owain glyndwr

NEW

England, France and Welsh Rebellion in the Middle Ages Gideon Brough The greatest figure in Welsh history Owain Glyndwr is a towering figure in Welsh history. He was the warrior who led the Welsh Revolt and the last war of Welsh independence (1400-1415). He defeated Henry IV’s army, was a worthy opponent of the king’s champion, the legendary Henry Percy – ‘Hotspur’ – and last native Welshman to bear the title Prince of Wales. He held court at Harlech and envisioned an independent Welsh state and church with national universities. Yet Glyndwr’s success was short-lived – his ultimate defeat at the hands of the English saw the final abandonment of the Welsh cause by France and his own disappearance into an unmarked grave. Gideon Brough here provides a new biography of this iconic man – as military leader, diplomat, medieval statesman and staunch Welsh nationalist.

Hero and Anti-Hero c. brad faught New biography of a pivotal figure in British Imperial history Horatio Herbert Kitchener, Earl Kitchener of Khartoum (18501916) is one of the most important figures in the history of the British Empire. Beginning as Royal Engineer in the 1870s he would end his career over forty years later as Secretary of State for War – the iconic figure of World War I recruitment posters. In between he became both the most famous British soldier in the world during the peak period of European imperialism, and a celebrated and sometimes controversial pro-consul and administrator. At his death in 1916 he had literally become the ‘face’ of the British war effort. This new biography offers a timely and modern evaluation of a still disputed and complex military man of empire.

What the british did

NEW

Two Centuries in the Middle East peter mangold How Britain’s legacy in the Middle East sowed the seeds for today’s discontent Britain has been engaged in the Middle East for over two centuries and today British forces in the region are fighting ISIS. Variously seen as intruders by most of the local populations and nationalists and as protectors by local pliant rulers, the British have been key arbiters in Middle Eastern politics. They created new states, determined who could hold power, resolved disputes and offered security to their clients. In this major new study, Peter Mangold shows how Britain sought to protect its changing interests in the region and assesses the British response to Arab nationalism. He examines the successes and failures of British policy and the reasons it has often proved controversial and accident prone. And he evaluates Britain’s complex legacy in the Middle East – its contribution to the stability of Jordan (at least to date) and the Gulf states, set against the instability which has plagued Iraq and the unresolved Palestine conflict. In tracing the history of Britain’s relationship with the Middle East, Mangold reveals how Britain’s involvement in the Middle East sowed the seeds for today’s crises.

A Reluctant Minister under Tony Blair bernard donoughue The latest volume in Bernard Donoughue’s sparkling and controversial diary series On 2nd May 1997, Tony Blair swept into Downing Street, ending almost twenty years of Conservative government and beginning a decade as Prime Minister. Bernard Donoughue, a Labour peer in the House of Lords, chronicled the path to this momentous election victory in his diaries and this volume sheds new light on the process of forming government and on life working as a minister in the House of Lords. Infused with Donoughue’s trademark sharp wit and insight, the diaries cover daily life for a working peer – from the committees and the political speeches to the political spats, all driven by policy differences and personal rivalries. Donoughue also casts a wry glance at a peer’s extra-curricular events – the wheeling and dealing, not to mention his own favourite hobby, horse-racing. Featuring a cast of high-profile political characters, this book is a must-read for fans of political diaries and anyone with an interest in the inside workings of British politics.

Based on access to a range of new sources, a major new biography of Ronald Reagan Ronald Reagan is one of the most important – and arguably most successful – presidents in modern American history. He is broadly credited with renewing American prosperity in the wake of the most miserable economic era since the 1930s, laying the foundations for Cold War victory and doing much to bring about the late twentieth century shift to the right in American politics. In this book, Iwan Morgan presents the first thoroughly researched biography of Reagan, based on original materials and first-hand interviews. He plots a chronological path through Reagan’s life beginning with his childhood and early years in Illinois, through his Hollywood career, his emergent Republicanism and his election as governor of California, before acceding to the presidency in 1981. In office, Morgan assesses Reagan’s economic and foreign policies, as well as his idealization of the constitution and his near-impeachment over the Iran-Contra affair.

An American Icon Laura trevelyan The story of the gun that made America The Winchester rifle, the iconic gun made in New Haven, Connecticut, and sold in its hundreds of thousands around the world, mirrors American expansion at a key period in the young country’s history. The repeating rifle became the defining image of America’s frontier – and was known amongst Native Americans as ‘the spirit gun’. It represented both the pioneering vigour and the brutal force which conquered the West. Laura Trevelyan explores the history of, and the family behind, this renowned representation of American power. The entrepreneurial drive of Oliver Winchester led the rifle to rapidly assume legendary status not long after its release in 1866, gaining endorsements from the likes of Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley and President Theodore Roosevelt. This engaging history sheds light on the story and myth of an American legend.

The Iron Fist of Albania Blendi Fevziu Edited by Robert Elsie Translated by majlinda nishku The first biography of one of Europe’s most ruthless dictators Stalinism, that particularly brutal phase of the Communist experience, came to an end in most of Europe with the Stalin’s death in 1953. However, in one country – Albania – Stalinism survived virtually unscathed until 1990. The regime that Enver Hoxha led from 1944, until his death in 1985, was incomparably severe. Such was the reign of terror that no audible voice of opposition or dissent ever arose in the Balkan state. Albania became isolated from the rest of the world and utterly inward-looking. Three decades after his death, the spectre of Hoxha still lingers over the country, yet little is known about the man who ruled with an iron fist for so many decades. This book provides the first biography of Hoxha available in English. Using unseen documents and first-hand interviews, journalist Blendi Fevziu pieces together the life of a tyrannical ruler.

Tragedy and Betrayal in an Occupied Village Jean-Marie Borzeix translated by Gay McAuley

with an introduction by caroline moorehead A dramatic account of the aftermath of one fateful day during World War II April 6, 1944. A detachment of German soldiers arrive in a rural French town, hunting down resistance fighters, many of whom are hiding in the region. More than sixty years later, the townspeople clearly remember the day when four peasants from a nearby village were taken hostage and shot as an example to others. But do they remember the whole story? Jean-Marie Borzeix sets out to investigate the events of Holy Thursday 1944, and to reveal the hidden truths of that fateful day. He uncovers the story of a mysterious ‘fifth man’ shot alongside the resisters and eventually unravels a trail which leads him to Paris, Israel and into the darkest corners of the Holocaust in France. A captivating story, the events of this day in a small, entirely typical, town illuminate the true impact of World War II in France.

Occupation, Resistance and Civil War David Brewer The complete history of Greece during World War II and the Civil War from an acclaimed historian During the 1940s Greece was torn apart twice, first by World War II and second by Civil War. Beginning in 1941, the occupation of Greece by Germany was intensely brutal. Children starved on the streets of Athens. The Jewish population was decimated in the Holocaust. Heroic acts of resistance – performed in concert with the SOE (Special Operations Executive) – were met with vicious reprisals. When Greece was finally freed from Nazi rule in 1944, the fractured and embittered nation became engulfed in civil war, as conflict flared between the American and British-sponsored government and communist-led rebels. Acclaimed historian of Greece, David Brewer here investigates this tumultuous decade in Greece’s modern history, providing a compelling military and political history.

The Arab Question, 1914-1919 robert H. lieshout The story of the crucial years of British involvement in the Middle East The profound effects of the British Empire’s actions in the Arab World during World War I can be seen echoing through the history of the 20th century. The uprising sparked by the Husayn-McMahon correspondence and led by ‘Lawrence of Arabia’; the Sykes-Picot agreement; and the Balfour Declaration have all shaped the Middle East. Undertaken during the First ‘World’ War, these actions were not part of a coordinated British strategy, but directed by several overlapping departments. The British and the Middle East examines how and why the British generals and diplomats acted as they did. By analysing the voluminous, contradictory and revealing records of British policy-makers, Robert H. Lieshout shows that many concerned with foreign policy making were oblivious to the history and complexities of the Islamic World.

The History of Central Asia

The Age of Islam and the Mongols Christoph Baumer The latest volume in a lavish illustrated history of Islam’s Golden Age and the rise of the Mongols Between the ninth and the fifteenth centuries, Central Asia was a major political, economic and cultural hub on the Eurasian continent. In the first half of the thirteenth century it was also the pre-eminent centre of power in the largest land-based empire the world has ever seen. This third volume of Christoph Baumer’s extensively praised and lavishly illustrated new history of the region is above all a story of invasion, when tumultuous and often brutal conquest profoundly shaped the later history of the globe. It explores the rise of Islam and the remarkable victories of the Arab armies which – inspired by their vital, austere and egalitarian desert faith – established important new dynasties like the Seljuks, Karakhanids and Ghaznavids. A golden age of artistic, literary and scientific innovation came to a sudden end when, between 1219 and 1260, Genghis Khan and his successors overran the Chorasmian-Abbasid lands. Dr Baumer shows that the Mongol conquests, while shattering to their enemies, nevertheless resulted in much greater mercantile and cultural contact between Central Asia and Western Europe.

In this book, Faroqhi, a leading historian on the Ottoman Empire, has selected the most revealing, surprising and striking examples of the artefacts which illuminate the lesser-known cultural and artistic world of the Ottomans. Each image reproduced in full color is deftly linked to the latest historiography, and the social, political and economic implications of her selections are never forgotten. In Faroqhi’s hands, the objects become ways to learn more about trade, gender and socio-political status. Transatlantic Slavery

NEW

Kenneth Morgan From 1501, when the first slaves arrived in Hispaniola, until the nineteenth nentury, some twelve million people were abducted from west Africa and shipped across thousands of miles of ocean – the infamous Middle Passage – to work in the colonies of the New World. It is estimated that two million Africans died at sea. Why was slavery so widely condoned by leading lawyers, religious leaders, politicians and philosophers? How was it that the educated classes of the Western world were prepared, for so long, to accept and promote an institution that would later be condemned as barbaric? Exploring these and other questions – and the slave experience on the sugar, rice, coffee and cotton plantations – Kenneth Morgan discusses the rise of a distinctively Creole culture; slave revolts, including the successful revolution in Haiti (1791–1804); and the rise of abolitionism, when the ideas of Montesquieu, Wilberforce, Quakers and others led to the slave trade’s systemic demise. At a time when the menace of human trafficking is of increasing concern worldwide, this timely book reflects on the deeper motivations of slavery as both ideology and merchant institution. Kenneth Morgan is Professor of History at Brunel University. He is the author of Bristol and the Atlantic Trade in the Eighteenth Century (1993), Slavery, Atlantic Trade and the British Economy, 1660–1800 (2000) and Slavery and the British Empire: From Africa to America (2007), among other titles. The Normans

NEW

Leonie V. Hicks The Battle of Hastings in 1066 is a date forever seared on the British national psyche. It enabled the Norman Conquest that marked the end of Anglo-Saxon England. But there was much more to the Normans than the invading army Duke William shipped over from Normandy to the shores of Sussex. How a band of marauding warriors established some of the most powerful kingdoms in Europe is an improbably romantic idea. In exploring Norman culture in all its regions, Leonie V Hicks places the Normans in the context of early medieval society. Her comparative perspective enables the Norman story to be told in full, including the societies of Rollo, William, Robert and Roger Guiscard. From Hastings to the martial exploits of Bohemond and Tancred on the First Crusade; from castles and keeps to Romanesque cathedrals; and from the founding of the Kingdom of Sicily (1130) to cross-cultural encounters with Byzantines and Muslims, this is a fresh and lively account of one of the most popular topics in European history. Leonie V. Hicks is Senior Lecturer in History at Canterbury Christ Church University. She is author of Religious Life in Normandy, 1050-1300 (2007). The Memoirs of an Ottoman Jew Victor eskenazi ‘Constantinople in those days represented the bridge between East and West. The navel of the earth. A wondrous and fascinating place to live.’ Victor Eskenazi, a Sephardic Jew from Constantinople, represented an ethnic and religious minority that thrived in the Ottoman Empire. The beginning of the twentieth century was a critical period in Ottoman history, which saw the end of the Empire, defeat in World War I but also a colourful influx of victorious allied armies and White Russians fleeing the Revolution, contributing to the already cosmopolitan nature of the city. Eskenazi breathed the complex air of this budding new Turkey, with its ideals, contradictions and hopes. His extraordinary memoir – which begins in Constantinople and travels across Europe during and after World War II – tells the remarkable story of a family, poignantly capturing a moment in time which now exists only in memory.

The World of Domenico Caracciolo, Thinker and Reformer Angus Campbell The colourful world of 18th-century European politics, revealed through the writings of a leading Italian statesman Dominico Caracciolo was an important figure on the eighteenth-century European stage, holding high office as a diplomat in London, Turin and Paris, and as viceroy and prime minister in the Two Sicilies. He was an inveterate letter-writer and his huge correspondence, with his diplomatic despatches and other official writing is a unique original source, providing a detailed and vivid picture of the eighteenth-century European elite with all its extravagance and scandalous behaviour. Even more importantly, it is an account of an Enlightenment struggle against the increasingly outdated clerical and feudal rule in Sicily. Caracciolo was an abrasive and combative official and politician and vigorous scion of the Enlightenment. In this book, Angus Campbell provides a detailed portrait of Caracciolo and of the political, social, economic, legal and cultural context in which he lived and worked. In doing so, he offers a unique vantage point on the European diplomatic culture of the eighteenth century.

the church in the early modern age

NEW

C. scott dixon The lastest volume in the highly praised I.B.Tauris History of the Christian Church series The years 1450-1650 were a momentous period for the development of Christianity. They witnessed the age of Reformation and Counter-Reformation: perhaps the most important era for the shaping of the faith since its foundation. C Scott Dixon explores how the ideas that went into the making of early modern Christianity re-oriented the Church to such an extent that they gave rise to new versions of the religion. He shows how the varieties and ambivalences of late medieval theology were replaced by dogmatic certainties, where the institutions of Christian churches became more effective and ‘modern’, staffed by well-trained clergy. Tracing these changes from the fall of Constantinople to the end of the Thirty Years’ War, through the High Renaissance and the Reformation, the author offers an integrated approach to widely different national, social and cultural histories. Moving beyond Protestant and Catholic conflicts, he contrasts Western Christianity with Eastern Orthodoxy, and examines the Church’s response to fears of Ottoman domination.

The popes and britain

NEW

A History of Rule, Rupture and Reconciliation stella fletcher A major new history of Britain’s turbulent relationship with the Vatican When the British thought of themselves as a Protestant nation their natural enemy was the pope and they adapted their view of history accordingly. In contrast, Rome’s perspective was always considerably wider and its view of Britain was almost invariably positive, especially in comparison to medieval emperors, who made and unmade popes, and post-medieval Frenchmen, who treated popes with contempt. As the twenty-first-century papacy looks ever more firmly beyond Europe, this new history examines political, diplomatic and cultural relations between the popes and Britain from their vague origins, through papal overlordship of England, the Reformation and the process of repairing that breach.

A History of Life after Death Philip c. almond A captivating journey through the dreams, desires, hopes and fears of the Western imagination ‘For in that sleep of death what dreams may come?’ The end of life has never meant the extinction of hope. People perpetually have yearned for, and often been terrified by, continuance beyond the horizon of mortality. Ranging across time and space, Philip Almond here takes his readers on a remarkable journey to worlds of torment and delight. He travels to the banks of the Styx, where Charon the grizzled boatman ferries a departing spirit across the river only if a gold obol is first placed for payment on the tongue of its corpse. He transports us to the legendary Isles of the Blessed, walks the hallowed ground of the Elysian Fields and plumbs the murky depths of Tartarus, primordial dungeon of the Titans. The pitiable souls of the damned are seen to clog the sootfilled caverns of Lucifer even as the elect ascend to Paradise. Including medieval fears for the fate of those consumed by cannibals, early modern ideas about the Last Day and modern scientific explorations of the domains of the dead, this first full treatment of the afterlife in Western thought evokes many rich imaginings of Heaven, Hell, Purgatory and Limbo.

The Life of Ranjit Singh, First Maharaja of the Sikhs mohamed sheikh A new biogaphy of the man who became one of the greatest figures in the history of the Punjab In 1801, at the age of 20, Ranjit Singh became the first Maharaja of the Sikh Empire and subsequently emerged as one of the greatest figures in the history of Punjab. Despite the difficult conditions he faced, including harsh terrain, a mixed ethnic population and surrounding aggressors (particularly the British), Ranjit Singh managed to unite the various Sikh factions and built a nation that neighbours soon learnt to treat with respect. Following his death in 1839, the empire fell into gradual decline, and in 1845 the Sikhs were defeated in battle by the British and fell under the influence of the East India Company. It was Ranjit Singh’s leadership skills and personal characteristics which kept the Sikh empire strong and united in the face of adversity. Unusually for the time, the empire that Singh led was secular and he sought to promote inter-faith unity through policies of equality and non-discrimination. This biography sheds new light on this important figure in Sikh history and illustrates the extraordinary leadership qualities, military prowess and political skills which ensured Ranjit Singh’s success as a leader in challenging circumstances.

a dictionary of classical greek quotations

NEW

edited by marinos yeroulanos foreword by oliver taplin, FBA A treasure trove of ancient Greek wisdom – pure enjoyment for specialist and generalist alike ‘Human wisdom is of little or no value’, wrote Plato in his Apology. And yet the ancient Greeks, including Plato himself, more than any other people of antiquity were fascinated by the pursuit of the wisdom they called ‘philosophia’. That search for knowledge involved an extensive use of maxims and quotations, as we can see from those expressions of Homer prefaced by the phrase ‘as people say’. Homer, the Seven Sages and the Pre-Socratic philosophers are still extensively quoted in all the major western languages. Yet for all their popularity, until now there has been no single resource to which interested readers might turn. This unique reference book offers one of the most comprehensive selections of Greek quotations ever committed to print. With its English text matched by the original Greek, the volume collects 7500 entries, ranging from the archaic period to late antiquity, and across philosophy, drama, poetry, history, science and medicine, each indexed with key words to enable fast sourcing. Together, these selections provide an incomparable insight into the glories of Greek civilization.

Priam’s Gold Schliemann and the Lost Treasures of Troy Caroline Moorehead new introduction by the author The story of the ‘father of pre-history’, and the mysterious fate of the treasures he found, from the New York Times Bestselling author Troy: one of the most captivating and mysterious stories of antiquity... But was Troy an actual place or just a legend of Homer’s epic? It took the most unlikely of people, Heinrich Schliemann – a grocer’s-apprentice turned self-made archaeologist, courageous and driven – to solve one of the greatest puzzles in history. His extraordinary discovery of the ruins of fabled Troy and the magnificent treasure of King Priam anointed Schliemann as the ‘father of pre-history’, but was also beset by controversy that persists to this day. The fate of the treasure itself is no less troubled. In 1945 it was spirited out of Berlin by the Red Army, to be hidden for 50 years in the vaults of the Pushkin Museum until the breakup of the Soviet Union. In this fast-paced account, Caroline Moorehead describes one of the most remarkable adventures of the 20th century, tracing Schliemann’s footsteps to Troy and the convoluted journey across Europe taken by the treasure itself.

The Mint Lawrence After Arabia T. E. Lawrence New introduction by Anthony sattin T.E. Lawrence’s compelling memoirs of his time in the air force In 1922, his dreams of an independent Arabia shattered, T.E. Lawrence enlisted in the RAF under the assumed name John Hume Ross. Though methodical and restrictive, life there seemed to suit Lawrence: ‘The Air Force is not a mancrushing humiliating slavery, all its days. There is sun and decent treatment, and a very real measure of happiness, to those who do not look forward or back.’ With poetic clarity, Lawrence brings to life the harsh realities of barracks life and illuminates the strange twilight world he had slipped into after his war experiences. For anyone interested in the life of one of the 20th century’s most enduring heroes and his life beyond the well-documented Arab revolt, The Mint is essential and compelling reading.

In 1927, uncomfortable with his ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ legend, Lawrence changed his name to Shaw and joined the RAF. He was killed in a motorbike accident in 1935 at the age of 47.

The South American Diaries John Hopkins A unique and colourful memoir documenting Hopkins’ literary journey through South America While writing a novel set in South America, John Hopkins travelled back there to ‘reacquaint himself with the scene’. In 1972-3, he travelled by train, bus and boat from Mexico City to the centre of the continent, through Belize, Guatemala and Nicaragua and on to Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina. Hopkins travelled slowly, deliberately, savouring every experience along the way. But the journey was fraught with his angst-ridden strivings to write his novel and with the troubled love he had for Madeleine, his travelling companion. In these heat-scorched, tequila-infused pages, Hopkins paints a sultry, exquisite portrait of South America and in so doing masters an art that he believed would forever elude him.

The Art of Exile

NEW

A Vagabond Life John Freely An unforgettable memoir from bestselling travel writer John Freely By the time he was six, John Freely had crossed the Atlantic four times. His childhood was spent on the streets of 1930s Brooklyn, where he scavenged for junk to sell and borrowed money for books; his first love being Homer’s Odyssey. He was 15 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and 17 when he enlisted in the US Navy and embarked on the first great adventure of his life: joining a clandestine unit that helped the Kuomintang fight the Japanese. He served for two years, 96 days in combat and a total of 344 days overseas, which sparked a lifelong passion for travel. Returning home after the war, Freely fell in love with a beautiful girl who sang the blues. His own Penelope. Together they signed a blood pact to spend their life travelling the world. This unforgettable memoir takes the reader from the streets of New York to the corridors of provincial campus life; from World War II in the Pacific to the shores of the Bosphorus and from ancient Troy to the isles of Dionysus and Ariadne. It is the story of a remarkable odyssey that has spanned nine decades, several continents and one great love.

recognizing sufism

NEW

Contemplation in the Islamic Tradition Arthur F. Buehler A fresh perspective on the rich, multilayered and often misunderstood Sufi tradition Sufism is all too often associated just with ‘mysticism’ in the West. The author of this new textbook, a former pupil of Annemarie Schimmel, suggests that conflating Sufism and mysticism is only partially valid. He shows that the vast majority of Sufi practice, both historically and in the contemporary world, has little or nothing to do with a esoteric transcendence but is rather focused on contemplative activity. Such practice might involve art, music, devotional shrine visitation – even politics and psychology. Placing Sufism in a wider Islamic contemplative context enables Arthur F. Buehler to examine Sufi history, as well as current application, against a backdrop that is richer and more inclusive than that portrayed in many competing introductory surveys. Discussing the origins of Sufism; the development of Sufi lineages (via three founder figures); Sufi lodges and the role of Sufism in colonial resistance; Sufi poetry; Sufi shrines, and Sufism in the West, the author rescues his topic from the idea that it means only union with the divine. In this original new treatment, Sufism emerges as complex and multi-layered.

A Literary Guide for Travellers garry mackenzie Captures the literary spirit and romance of the crowning glory of the British Isles With its vibrant cities and breathtaking landscapes, Scotland has captivated writers and visitors for centuries and inspired a diverse range of literature, from the religious poems carved on the rocks of its sacred monuments to the seedy urban novels of Irvine Welsh. For Robert Burns, Scotland’s iconic poet, the culture of his native country was a fertile ground for his imagination. Sir Walter Scott drew on the nation’s past and Highland landscapes as he pioneered the historical novel. This enthralling guide gets under the skin of the country through the writers who lived in or visited Scotland, as well as those who simply imagined it in their work – from Shakespeare, Ben Jonson and the Scots ‘Makars’ of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, to Keats, Coleridge and Robert Louis Stevenson; from Gaelic bards and anonymous balladeers to the cosmopolitan Hugh MacDiarmid, Jackie Kay, Ian Rankin and Kathleen Jamie. Famous figures sit alongside writers sometimes overlooked by literary travellers, and through their lives and words we experience the rich, fractious and passionate story of Scottish culture and discover how Scotland’s history, landscape and society are brought to life in literature.

A Literary Guide for Travellers Marie-José Gransard The first book of its kind to explore the legendary literary world of Venice Venice, ‘La Serenissima’, is one of the most breathtaking cities in the world. A floating labyrinth; the world’s greatest museum, frozen in time; a cultural jewel, slowly sinking into the lagoon from which it rose; tourist-trap, irresistible muse. From its earliest beginings in the 7th Century, Venice has been a magnetic centre of trade and culture, wealth and power and has acted as a crossroads for an array of religious pilgrims and refugees, diplomats, crusading armies and merchants. Later, its fabled beauty and reputation as a haven for freedom of expression seduced some of the most celebrated figures in history: artists such as Dürer, Da Vinci, Bellini and Turner; writers Dickens, Byron, Kafka, Poe, Rousseau, Thomas Mann, Ruskin and Ezra Pound and composers Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Verdi and Stravinsky. In this, the first literary guide to Venice, the author uncovers the city’s myriad secrets, revealing how every floating palace, gilded church and bustling square is imbued with the lives and creations of those who were inspired by the city, which still echoes with their voices.

Experience the splendour of Cairo through 150 stunning photographs shot from the city’s indoor havens Cairo is a city of splendor and spectacle, long celebrated as much for its warmth and bustling street life as for the legacy of its tumultuous past. Yet for the countless visitors who fall under its spell, the prolonged din of its crowds and traffic can seem overwhelming at times, tempting them out of the city’s open spaces into its shadow light, the cooler, quieter interiors of restaurants, homes, hotels, and terraces. Cairo Inside Out evokes the light and moods of this great metropolis with stunning photographs shot from the city’s indoor havens. We observe it through and from nostalgic haunts, such as Café Riche and the Windsor Hotel, and look out onto its great sights – the Nile, the Red Pyramid at Dahshur, Ibn Tulun mosque – from the most intimate urban interiors, homes, and watersides. For those who may have lived in Cairo, this is a reminder of a city that moves and yet remains wonderfully unchanged. For visitors and residents, this evocative collection, an unabashed homage to Cairo’s persistent color and allure, will inspire them to visit those places once more.

3D Warhol

Andy Warhol and Sculpture Thomas Morgan Evans An essential new perspective on one of the world’s most famous artists ‘Infinite’ and ‘invisible’ sculptures; rain machines; alarmed pickle jars; replica cornflakes boxes; ‘disco décor’; time capsules; birthday presents; perfume bottles and floating silver pillows; museum interventions; collected and curated projects; expanded performance environments; and holograms. This is a book about the varied, surprising ways in which Andy Warhol engaged with sculpture. It begins in 1954, long before his first Pop paintings, and ends in 1987, the year of his death. In 3D Warhol, Thomas Morgan Evans argues that Warhol’s experiments with sculpture, and engagement with both traditional and newly emerging understandings of sculpture, amounted to ‘trespasses’ across art historical and social territories. This groundbreaking, original book brings to the forefront a major, but overlooked dimension of Warhol’s work, providing an essential new perspective on the artist’s legacy.

Spectacular television

NEW

Exploring Televisual Pleasure Helen Wheatley How TV seeks to dazzle us with ever more stunning visuals In terms of visual impact, television has long been regarded as inferior to cinema. It has been characterised as sound-led, dull to look at and consumed by a distracted audience. Today, it is tempting to see the rise of HD and 3D as ushering in a new era of spectacular television. Yet since its earliest days, the medium has embraced spectacular content. Television has been positioned as a spectacular ‘attraction’ from the outset. In its early days, it was introduced to audiences in public promotional demonstrations; today, programmes are viewed on large HD screens at home accompanied by surround sound and special effects. Looking at lifestyle shows, ‘shock’-umentaries, costume dramas, televised sport, travel shows and ambitious natural history series, Helen Wheatley answers the questions: what is televisual pleasure, and how has television defined its own brand of spectacular aesthetics?

I’m Buffy and You’re History

NEW

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Contemporary Feminism patricia j. pender How did the world’s most famous vampire slayer became a feminist icon? Buffy the Vampire Slayer gave contemporary TV viewers an exhilarating alternative to the tired cultural trope of a hapless, attractive blonde woman victimized by a murderous male villain. With its strong, capable heroine, witty dialogue, and a creator (Joss Whedon) who identifies himself as a feminist, the cult show became one of the most widely analysed texts in contemporary popular culture. The last episode, broadcast in 2002, did not herald the passing of a fleeting phenomenon: Buffy is still a media presence and is studied internationally. I’m Buffy and You’re History puts the entire series under the microscope, investigating its gender and feminist politics. In this book, Patricia Pender explores the Slayer’s postmodern politics, her position as a third wave feminist icon, her placing of masculinity in extremis, and her fandom and legacy in popular culture. This is a fresh and challenging contribution to the growing literature on the pitfalls and pleasures of a great cult TV show.

the architecture of psychoanalysis

NEW

Spaces of Transition Jane Rendell An innovative exploration of the psychoanalytic nature of architecture How do external material environments and the inner world of emotion, memory and imagination influence each other? In this thought-provoking book, Jane Rendell explores how architectural space registers in psychoanalysis. She investigates both the inherently spatial vocabulary of psychoanalysis and ideas around the physical ‘setting’ of the psychoanalytic encounter, with reference to Sigmund Freud, D.W. Winnicott and André Green. Building on the innovative writing methods employed in Art and Architecture and SiteWriting, she also addresses the concept of architecture as ‘social condenser’ – a Russian constructivist notion that connects material space and community relations. Tracing this idea’s progress from 1920s Moscow to 1950s Britain, Rendell shows how interior and exterior meet in both psychoanalysis and architectural practice. Illuminating a novel field of interdisciplinary enquiry, this book breathes fresh life into notions of social space.

drawing difference

NEW

Connections Between Gender and Drawing Marsha Meskimmon & Phil Sawdon The vital role that drawing has played in the feminist movement Drawing has been growing in recognition and stature within contemporary fine art since the mid-1970s. Simultaneously, feminist activism has been widespread, leading to the increased prominence of women artists, scholars, critics and curators and the wide acknowledgement of the crucial role played by gender and sexual difference in constituting the subject. Drawing Difference argues that these developments did not occur in parallel simply by coincidence. Rather, the intimate interplay between drawing and feminism is best characterised as allotropic – a term originating in chemistry that describes a single pure element which nevertheless assumes varied physical structures, denoting the fundamental affinities which underlie apparently differing material forms. Analysing drawing from the 1970s to today, including works by Annette Messenger, Dorothea Rockburne, Carolee Schneemann, Toba Khedoori and Susan Hauptmann, this book recasts the relationship between drawing and feminist thought.

From Soviet Orientalism to the New Republics Aliya Abykayeva-Tiesenhausen Art and imperial propaganda in the Soviet Union In the midst of the space race and nuclear age, Soviet Realist artists were producing figurative oil paintings. Why? How was art produced to control and co-opt the peripheries of the Soviet Union, particularly Central Asia? Presenting the ‘untold story’ of Soviet Orientalism, Aliya Abykayeva-Tiesenhausen reevaluates the imperial project of the Soviet state, placing the Orientalist undercurrent found within art and propaganda production in the USSR alongside the creation of new art forms in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. From the turmoil of the 1930s through to the post-Stalinist era, the author draws on meticulous new research and rich illustrations to examine the political and social structures in the Soviet Union – and particularly Soviet Central Asia – to establish vital connections between Socialist Realist visual art, the creation of Soviet identity and later nationalist sentiments.

the politics of iconoclasm

NEW in paperback

Religion, Violence and the Culture of ImageBreaking in Christianity and Islam james noyes Why have the fighters of ISIS diverted much-needed men and resources from the battlefield to focus on the destruction of historic and religious artefacts in the Middle East? From Christian churches in Syria to Shi’i mosques and World Heritage sites in Iraq, little has escaped the depredations of the black flag fundamentalists. Shocking as this destruction may be, violent iconoclasm is nothing new. While the eradications and obliterations of ISIS may have generated headlines of late, the targeted destruction of images - both religious and secular - in fact has a long and infamous history. In The Politics of Iconoclasm James Noyes shows that, whether false idols and graven images or the tombs of kings and shrines of capitalism, the razing of cities, sacred sites and artefacts for religious, political or nationalistic reasons has always been central to the cultural legacy of humanity.

‘Impressive... The book’s major achievement is to show how central politics has been in the history of iconoclasm’ – Times Literary Supplement ‘A fearless narrative... an impressive display of ambition and eruditiion’ – Carlos Eire, Professor of History and Religious Studies, Yale University james Noyes holds a doctorate in Religious Studies from the University of Cambridge. travel and artisans in the ottoman empire

NEW paperback edition

Employment and Mobility in the Early Modern Era suraiya faroqhi

It has often been assumed that the subjects of the Ottoman sultans were unable to travel beyond their localities – since peasants needed the permission of their local administrators before they could legitimately leave their villages. According to this view, only soldiers and members of the governing elite would have been free to travel. However Suraiya Faroqhi’s extensive archival research shows that this was not the case. Pious men from all walks of life went on pilgrimage to Mecca, slaves fled from their masters and craftspeople travelled in search of work. Faroqhi shows that even those craftsmen who did not travel extensively had some level of mobility and that the Ottoman sultans and viziers, who spent so much effort in attempting to control the movements of their subjects, could do so only within often very narrow limits. Suraiya Faroqhi is Professor of History at Istanbul Bilgi University. She is a renowned authority on Ottoman history and her previous publications include: The Ottoman Empire and the World Around It; Artisans of Empire; Culture and Daily Life in the Ottoman Empire (all I.B.Tauris). Journeys Across Iran Cyrus Massoudi

For Cyrus Massoudi, a young British born Iranian, the country his parents were forced to flee thirty years ago was a place unknown to him. Wanting to make sense of his roots and piece together the divided, divisive and deeply contradictory puzzle that is contemporary Iran, he embarked on a series of journeys that spanned hundreds of miles and thousands of years through the many ebbs and flows of Iranian history. From the border with Turkey to Turkmenistan, from the Caspian basin down to the Persian Gulf, his journeys took him from the mythological first kings of Iran, to the glory of the Sasanians, the shock of the Islamic Arab conquests and on to Khomeini, Ahmadinejad and beyond. Running through the heart of the narrative lies Massoudi’s poignant personal quest; his struggle echoing that of Iran itself, as it fights to forge a cohesive modern identity.

‘takes the reader on an illuminating journey through Iran and its rich, turbulent history’ – Wanderlust Cyrus Massoudi spent three years in Iran on a journey of self-discovery, travelling and researching this book. He now lives in London, working as a writer, screenwriter and translator. Land of the Turquoise Mountains is his first book. February 2016 256 pages 216 x 135mm Paperback 9781784535704 £11.99

the devil

A New Biography

NEW in paperback

Philip c. almond It is often said that the devil has all the best tunes. He also has as many names as he has guises. Lucifer, Mephistopheles, Beelzebub (in Christian thought), Ha-Satan or the Adversary (in Jewish scripture) and Iblis or Shaitan (in Islamic tradition) has throughout the ages and across civilizations been a compelling and charismatic presence. For two thousand years the supposed reign of God has been challenged by the fiery malice of his opponent, as contending forces of good and evil have between them weighed human souls in the balance. In this rich and multi-textured biography, Philip C Almond explores the figure of the devil from the first centuries of the Christian era through the rise of classical demonology and witchcraft persecutions to the modern post-Enlightenment ‘decline’ of Hell. The author shows that the Prince of Darkness, in all his incarnations, remains an irresistible subject in history, religion, art, literature and culture. Philip C. Almond is Emeritus Professor of Religion in the University of Queensland. His previous books include The Witches of Warboys: An Extraordinary Story of Sorcery, Sadism and Satanic Possession (2008), England’s First Demonologist: Reginald Scot and ‘The Discoverie of Witchcraft’ (2011) and The Lancashire Witches: A Chronicle of Sorcery and Death on Pendle Hill (2012), all published by I.B.Tauris. Eternal Chalice

The Enduring Legend of the Holy Grail

NEW paperback edition

Juliette wood ‘What is the secret of the Grail?’ So intoned a heavenly voice to Sir Percival in John Boorman’s stylish and influential film Excalibur (1981). The sacred allure of the Holy Grail has fascinated writers and ensnared knights for over a thousand years. From Malory to Monty Python, the eternal chalice – said to be the very cup from which Christ drank at the Last Supper – has the richest associations of any icon in British myth. Many different meanings have been devised for the Grail, which has been linked to King Arthur, ancient mystery religions, Jungian archetypes, dualist heresies, Templar treasure and even the alleged descendants of Christ himself and Mary Magdalene. Juliette Wood here reveals the elusive and embedded significance of the Grail in popular consciousness – as myth, medieval romance, holy relic and finally as the central feature of a worldwide coded conspiracy, stretching back to the dawn of civilisation. Her book will enthral those who, like Sir Percival, seek to unlock the mysterious secrets of western mythology’s most extraordinary and tantalising enigma. Juliette Wood is one of Britain’s leading experts on myth and folklore. Secretary of the Folklore Society, London, she is also an Associate Lecturer in the Department of Welsh at the University of Wales, Cardiff. A regular contributor to TV and radio, she is the author of several books on Celtic myth and legend. June 2016 256 pages 216 x 134mm Paperback 9781784535209 £14.99

Sir Edward Woodville and the Age of Chivalry

NEW in paperback

christopher wilkins Sir Edward Woodville was the medieval knight par excellence – except that his life coincided with the beginning of the Renaissance. With this vivid and longawaited biography, Christopher Wilkins demonstrates how Sir Edward carved out an important role for himself in the 15th century, marrying the old-fashioned values of a chivalric age with the modernising trends that were dramatically re-shaping Europe. Far from an anachronism, The Last Knight Errant reveals how this quintessentially medieval figure, riding from battle to battle across Europe, was also profoundly engaged in the events that built the post-medieval states of England, Spain and France. Drawing on original research throughout Europe, Christopher Wilkins draws out Sir Edward Woodville’s fascinating life and unusual character in the context of his remarkable family, who have been traditionally cast as among the most unpopular in English history.

‘an entertaining biography... [the author] brings vivid life and colour to the narrative.’ – Sir John Chilcot Christopher Wilkins saw active service in Aden, the Radfan and Oman. He attended the School of Military Intelligence and read for the Bar before joining The Sunday Times. He subsequently built up a successful business and was a member of the Scottish Economic Council for ten years. January 2016 256 pages 234 x 156mm Paperback 9781784534868 £14.99

The great rivalry Gladstone and Disraeli

NEW in paperback

Dick leonard Benjamin Disraeli and William Ewart Gladstone are without doubt the two most iconic figures of Victorian politics. Their distinctly different personalities and policies led to 28 years of bitter political rivalry. For the first time, this book provides the full story of their rivalry and its origins, comparing the upbringing, education and personalities of the two leaders, as well as their political careers. Dick Leonard considers the impact of religion on the two men, their contrasting oratorical skills, their attitudes to political and social reform, foreign affairs and imperialism as well as their relations with Queen Victoria. In their private lives he sheds new light on Gladstone’s guilt-ridden obsession with ‘reforming’ prostitutes, and Disraeli’s almost completely successful efforts to conceal the existence of two illegitimate children. This book provides important new perspectives on the two towering political characters of the Victorian Age.

‘Fascinating book about two people whom I know less about than I should ... it combines insight with wit and brevity’ – David Owen, former Foreign Secretary. bernard o’kane

A magnificent fully colour-illustrated celebration of Egypt’s Islamic architectural heritage Less than ten years after the death of the Prophet Muhammad, the new religion of Islam arrived in Egypt with the army of Amr ibn al-As in AD 641. Amr immediately established his capital at al-Fustat, just south of modern Cairo, and there he built Africa’s first mosque, one still in regular use today. Since then, governors, caliphs, sultans, amirs, beys, pashas, among others, have built mosques, madrasas, and mausoleums throughout Egypt in a changing sequence of Fatimid, Ayyubid, Mamluk, Ottoman, and modern styles. In this fully colorillustrated, large-format volume, a leading historian of Islamic art and culture celebrates the great variety of Egypt’s mosques and related religious buildings, from the early congregational mosques, through the medieval mausoleum–madrasas, to the neighborhood mosques of the Ottoman and modern periods. With outstanding architectural photography and authoritative descriptive texts, this book will be valued as the finest on the subject by scholars and general readers alike.

Edited by Menha el-Batraoui Translated by Nabil Shawkat & Mandy McClure

A colorful kaleidoscope of the handicrafts created by Egypt’s artisans Many traditional crafts practiced in contemporary Egypt can be traced back hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Scenes inscribed on the walls of ancient temples and tombs depict the earliest Egyptians making pottery and papyrus and working with stone, wood, and other materials. This volume explores these and other crafts that continue to flourish in Egypt. The authors, drawing on historical sources and documentary research, sketch the evolution of each craft, looking into its origins, the development of tools and methods used in the craft, and the diverse influences that have shaped the form and function of craft items produced today. Field research and interviews with craftspeople, serve to set these crafts into a living cultural context and offer a window into the modern craft economy and local communities sustained by it. From the coastal town of Damietta to the far-flung deserts and the ancient alleyways of Cairo, it is a narrative and visual tour that provides valuable insight into contemporary Egypt as seen through its material culture and the legions of unsung artists who nourish and enrich it.

from akhenaten to moses

NEW in paperback

Ancient Egypt and Religious Change jan assmann The shift from polytheism to monotheism changed the world radically. Akhenaten and Moses – a figure of history and a figure of tradition – symbolise this shift in its incipient, revolutionary stages and represent two civilisations that were brought into the closest connection as early as the Book of Exodus, where Egypt stands for the old world to be rejected and abandoned in order to enter the new one. The seven chapters of this seminal study shed light on the great transformation from different angles. Between Egypt in the first chapter, and monotheism in the last, five chapters deal in various ways with the transition from one to the other, analyzing the Exodus myth, understanding the shift in terms of evolution and revolution, confronting Akhenaten and Moses in a new way, discussing Karl Jaspers’ theory of the Axial Age, and dealing with the eighteenth-century view of the Egyptian mysteries as a cultural model. Jan Assmann is a German Egyptologist widely known for his work on the origins of monotheism. He is the author of Moses the Egyptian: The Memory of Egypt in Western Monotheism (1998), and The Price of Monotheism (2009). February 2016 168 pages 230 x 150mm Paperback 9789774167492 £14.95

poisoned legacy

NEW paperback edition

The Fall of the Nineteenth Egyptian Dynasty: Revised Edition aidan dodson After the death of Rameses II, the Nineteenth Dynasty, soon fell into decline and familial conflict, culminating in a final civil war that ended with the accession of a new dynasty. Sethy I and Rameses II’s promotion of a concept of a wider ‘royal family’ may have sown the seeds for the conflicts among their descendants. Aidan Dodson explores the mysteries of the origins of the usurper-king Amenmeses and the career of the ‘king-maker’ of the period, the chancellor Bay. Having helped to install at least one pharaoh on the throne, Bay’s life was ended by his abrupt execution, ordered by the woman with whom he had shared the regency of Egypt for the young and disabled King Siptah. Finally, the author considers how that woman – Tawosret – became the last true female pharaoh, and how she finally lost her throne to the founder of the Twentieth Dynasty, Sethnakhte. Aidan Dodson is a senior research fellow in the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Bristol, where he teaches Egyptology. He is the author of Monarchs of the Nile (AUC Press, rev. ed. 2015), Amarna Sunrise (AUC Press, 2014), Afterglow of Empire (AUC Press, 2012), and Amarna Sunset (AUC Press, 2009). authentic egyptian cooking

NEW in paperback

From the Table of Abou el Sid nehal leheta Traditionally, Egyptian cooking has been best practiced and enjoyed at home, where generations of unrecorded family recipes have been the sustaining repertoire for daily meals as well as sumptuous holiday feasts. Abou El Sid, one of Cairo’s most famous restaurants, has become well known for its authentic Egyptian dishes, and now presents more than fifty of its most classic recipes in a cookbook for the enjoyment of home cooks all over the world. Egyptians will recognise their favorites, from holiday dishes such as Fettah to the arrays of appetisers like aubergine with garlic, special lentils, and tahina; those new to Middle Eastern food will find the recipes simple and simply delicious, and enjoy the Egyptian table even if they don’t have the heritage of the pharaohs in their family backgrounds. Nehal Leheta is an interior designer in Cairo with a strong interest in cuisine. She has designed a number of restaurant interiors in Egypt, and is a co-founder of Design Point, an interior and architecture design and consulting firm. the naguib mahfouz reader

NEW in paperback

edited by denys johnson-davies Naguib Mahfouz, the first and only writer of Arabic to be awarded the Nobel prize for literature, wrote prolifically from the 1930s until shortly before his death in 2006, in a variety of genres: novels, short stories, plays, screenplays, a regular weekly newspaper column, and in later life his intensely brief and evocative Dreams. His Cairo Trilogy achieved the status of a world classic, and the Swedish Academy of Letters in awarding him the 1988 Nobel prize for literature noted that Mahfouz ‘through works rich in nuance – now clear-sightedly realistic, now evocatively ambiguous – has formed an Arabic narrative art that applies to all mankind.’ Here Denys Johnson-Davies, described by Edward Said as ‘the leading Arabic–English translator of our time,’ makes an essential selection of short stories and extracts from novels and other writings, to present a crosssection through time of the very best of the work of Egypt’s Nobel laureate. Naguib Mahfouz (1911–2006) wrote nearly 40 novel-length works, plus hundreds of short stories and numerous screenplays. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988. Denys Johnson-Davies has produced more than thirty volumes of translation of modern Arabic literature, including The Essential Tawfiq al-Hakim (AUC Press, 2008). two thousand years of coptic christianity

NEW

Otto F. A. Meinardus A history of one of the world’s oldest Christian traditions Christianity arrived early in Egypt, brought – according to tradition – by Saint Mark the Evangelist, who became the first patriarch of Alexandria. The Coptic Orthodox Church has flourished ever since, with millions of adherents both in Egypt and in Coptic communities around the world. Since its split from the Byzantine Church in 451, the Coptic Church has proudly maintained its early traditions, and influence from outside has been minimal: the liturgy is still sung to unique rhythms in Coptic, a late stage of the same ancient Egyptian language that is inscribed in hieroglyphs on temple walls and papyri. Dr. Otto Meinardus, a leading authority on the history of the Coptic Church, here revises, updates, and combines his renowned studies Christian Egypt, Ancient and Modern (AUC Press, 1965, 1977) and Christian Egypt, Faith and Life (AUC Press, 1970) into a new, definitive, one-volume history, surveying the twenty centuries of existence of one of the oldest churches in the world.

Otto F.A.
