Frontline Ukraine Crisis in the Borderlands

RICHARD SAKWA The first account of the gravest international crisis of the 21st century Key Selling Points   

MANUSCRIPT: SEPTEMBER 2014 PUBLICATION: DECEMBER 2014 PRICE: £18.99 EXTENT: 288 PAGES IMAGES: 12 BW INTEGRATED Author Richard Sakwa is Professor of Russian and European Politics and Head of the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent. He is also Associate Fellow of the Russian and Eurasia Programme at Chatham House and the author of The Crisis of Russian Democracy; Putin: Russia’s Choice; Communism in Russia; Russian Politics and Society; The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union and Gorbachev and his Reforms.

5

Author is leading authority on modern Russia Timely book on an issue that will dominate news No competitive work on the subject

Description The unfolding crisis in Ukraine has brought the world to the brink of a new Cold War. As Russia and Ukraine tussle for Crimea and the eastern regions, relations between Putin and the West have reached an all-time low. How did we get here? Richard Sakwa here unpicks the story of Russo-Ukrainian relations and traces the path to the recent disturbances through five ‘revolutions’, which have forced Ukraine, a country internally divided between East and West, to choose between closer union with Europe or its historic ties with Russia. The first full account of the ongoing crisis, Frontline Ukraine explains the origins, developments and global significance of the battle for Crimea. With all eyes focused on the region, Sakwa unravels the myths and misunderstandings of the situation, providing an essential and highly-readable account of the struggle for Europe’s contested borderlands.

China’s Forgotten People: The Uighurs Terrorism and Repression in China’s Islamic State

NICK HOLDSTOCK Key Selling Points   

MANUSCRIPT: SEPTEMBER 2015 PUBLICATION: SEPTEMBER 2016 PRICE : £20 EXTENT: 272 PAGES

Author Nick Holdstock is a journalist and writer. He writes for the London Review of Books, where he is the de facto China correspondent for the LRB Blog. His writing can also be found in the LA Review of Books, n+1, The Independent, The Dublin Review, Times Literary Supplement, the Edinburgh Review and Salon.com amongst others. He is also currently an editor at China Dialogue – part of The Guardian environment network.

First book to approach the subject of the Uighurs This book will promote much discussion and interest from the public Very topical subject, which should receive much media attention

Description On the 28th October last year a jeep ploughed through several people before exploding in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. The Chinese authorities identified the driver as an Uighur – an Islamic ethnic minority, 10 million strong, who live in China’s North West province of Xinjiang. A hardcore Islamic group from the region quickly claimed responsibility, and promised a campaign of bombings and attacks. Six months later, on the 1st March 2014, five knife-wielding assailants went on a rampage at a train station in Kunming, the capital of southern China's Yunnan province, killing dozens and again the attacks – sometimes referred to as Chiba’s 9/11 - have been blamed on Xinjiang, and the Uighur people who live there. The Uighur people have been placed on the US’ terror watch list, accused of having ‘links to al-Qaida’, and they also stand accused of waging ‘global jihad’ by the Chinese government. This view of the Uighur people is now so prevalent that Fox News, The Times and The Daily Mirror suggested that they might be responsible for the disappearance of the Malaysian Airlines MH370 flight. In actual fact, as Nick Holdstock seeks to show, the story of the Uighur people is one of repression, hardship and helplessness in the face of chronic exploitation by the Chinese state. The mustread inside story behind the phenomenon which will be a constant news-story over the next decade, China’s Forgotten People: Terrorism and Repression in China’s Islamic State will take the reader inside the hidden world of China’s Islamic minority, and reveal the deepseated problems which are behind the growth of domestic terrorism in China. Praise for the Author ‘Holdstock is undoubtably a skillful writer . . .’ – Edinburgh Book Review (review for The Tree That Bleeds). ‘Holdstock has been able to humanize the ethnic conflict while painting a refreshing picture of Xinjiang that is both colourful [sic] and inviting.’ – Josh Summers, Far West China (review for The Tree That Bleeds). Chasing the Chinese Dream Stories from Modern China

NICK HOLDSTOCK Key Selling Points   

Topical issue that will only increase with importance for the coming years This book will promote much discussion and interest from the public First book on the subject

Description

MANUSCRIPT: MARCH 2015 PUBLICATION: SEPTEMBER 2015 PRICE: £20 EXTENT: 272 PAGES

Author Nick Holdstock is a journalist and writer. He writes for the London Review of Books, where he is the de facto China correspondent for the LRB blog. His writing can also be found in the LA Review of Books, n+1, The Independent, The Dublin Review, Times Literary Supplement, the Edinburgh Review and Salon.com amongst others. He is also currently an editor at China Dialogue – part of The Guardian environment network.

This book looks to tell the story of modern China through its people. The flood of workers from the countryside to the cities is the biggest and fastest migration there has ever been and the cities are expanding at the fastest rate ever seen causing massive environmental damage, pollution, chronic housing shortages and driving wages down to unsustainable levels. At the same time, hundreds of Chinese ‘ghost’ cities have been built which are unoccupied, a result of corruption and kickbacks, as the government refuses to legally allow those from other provinces to settle there. Some Chinese are getting rich; they own or run factories and are buying luxury cars and Louis Vuitton bags. Some Chinese are trapped by a corrupt visa system, which essentially forces long hours and with no prospects. China talks of the ‘Chinese Dream’, the idea that in the new China, anyone can make it. Nick wants to find out the reality behind this rhetoric – form the factory-owner, to the noodle seller, from the Karaoke maids to the hoteliers, and from the deserted, ageing countryside to the young and overcrowded cities. The key to this book will be Nick’s writing, which is excellent, a wonderful book full of human stories and energy and colour.

Writer and journalist Jemimah Steinfeld meets the young people behind the world’s fastest-moving nation to unveil their attitudes towards love, life and sexuality. Young Chinese have new words to describe the world they live in: ‘little emperors’ – single men who have grown up under the one child policy – they’re bossy and selfish; ‘bare branches’ – those without children; ‘leftovers’ – women over twenty-six who aren’t married; ‘comrade’ – how the gay community identifies itself; ‘love markets’ – weekend gatherings across China where parents attempt to find husbands and wives for their children, and others show up to match-make young singles and even offer boyfriends for hire. Jemimah Steinfeld introduces the people at the heart of this world, from the man starting China’s first online dating agency to the women who work the red-light districts; from the company trying to sell sex toys to China’s middle-classes to the sino-punks of Beijing’s bar scene. Little Emperors and Material Girls is the book that will change the way you see China.

She is an established author and thinker on Muslim social and religious trends, particularly around young Muslims and Muslim women and writes regularly for The Times, the BBC and The Guardian. She was named one of the world's 500 most influential Muslims, and specifically one of the UK's 100 most powerful Muslim women. She is the author of the awardwinning Love in a Headscarf.

11

There is a segment of the world’s 1.8 billion Muslims that is more influential than any other, and will shape not just the future of Muslims, but also the world around them. The Arab spring though in many ways thwarted - has nevertheless raised the prospect of a segment of Islamic societies, which has an eye on the future of the Muslim world. Who are they? What drives them? The growing consumer power of Muslims, young Muslims in particular, is a trend that cannot be ignored. This new generation are a tech-savvy, self-empowered, youthful group who believe that their identity encompasses both faith and modernity. For these Muslims, their faith affects everything, informing the way they consume, interact, work, and spend their leisure time. Shelina Janmohamed here explores this growing cultural phenomenon, at a time where understanding the mindset of Muslim youths, and what drives them, is critical. Exploring fashion magazines, social networking and everyday consumer choices, this book shows how these young Muslims are not only adapting to Western consumerism, but reclaiming it as their own. Based on groundbreaking and extensive research undertaken by Ogilvy Noor, the world’s first bespoke global Islamic branding practice, Janmohamed provides a unique and timely insight into the lives, and future, of the contemporary, global Muslim population.

Praise for the Author ‘Janmohamed shows her desire to nudge her culture in a more enlightened direction, while at the same time offering insight into the life of a British Muslim woman.’ – Sameer Rahim, Telegraph (review for Love in a Headscarf). ‘A forthright, charming tale of unraveling the “overwhelming contradictions and tangles” of identity.’ – Kirkus Review (review for Love in a Headscarf).

Zhou Enlai

China’s Good Communist

MICHAEL DILLON Key Selling Points   

China’s Communist Government has been the focus of media attention for many years Previously no up-to-date biographies on Zhou Enlai; this book is from original Chinese sources Zhou Enlai was a central figure in China during its rise to superpower status

Description MANUSCRIPT: SEPTEMBER 2015 PUBLICATION: 2016 PRICE: £62 EXTENT: 336 PAGES IMAGES: 16 BW INTEGRATED

Author Michael Dillon was Founding Director of the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Durham, where he taught modern Chinese history. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Asiatic Society and was Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing in 2009. He is the author of China: A Modern History.

Urbane, enigmatic, éminence grise, the ‘man behind the scenes’ sums up Zhou Enlai’s long and vital political career in the Chinese Communist Party from the 1920s to 1970s and his close connections with both Chiang Kai-Shek and Mao Zedong. He was a major influence on Deng Xiaoping – a source, for example, of major influence on Xiaoping’s ‘Four Modernizations’ in agriculture, industry, science and technology, and the military. Enlai was thus the prime architect of China’s drive towards superpower status. An interesting, attractive and intellectual figure whom Dillon regards as ‘a genuine statesman rather than just a political operator’. She is the author of John Milton's Paradise Lost: A Sourcebook (2005) and has contributed to a variety of publications including Blackwell's A Companion to Milton.

13

Eternal fire, diabolical torment, graphic mortification of the flesh and a smoke-filled underworld pierced by the despairing shrieks of the damned: the idea of Hell has for thousands of years exerted both fascination and terror. And despite its horrors, it is hard to resist its almost seductive allure. Whether expressed in medieval Doom paintings and grim warnings of everlasting suffering, or in modern psychological interpretations, the belief in a ghastly terminus for the souls of the cursed has proved remarkably resilient and persistent. It has far outlived specific portrayals by artists, writers and theologians, and has seemed far more resonant an idea than either a heavenly Paradise or New Jerusalem. Why has hell retained this extraordinary potency, even as western society has become more sceptical and secular? In her rich and wide-ranging book, Margaret Kean tells the history of hell through literature, philosophy, art, music and film. She shows that affirmations of human freedom and the value of the individual have remained closely tied to the notion of hell even as contemporary narratives have replaced a medieval mindset. From Dante and Bosch to Blake and Milton, and from Joseph Conrad and Primo Levi to Angel Heart, Alien 3 and Event Horizon, Kean vividly explores hell as both a secular confessional and divinely ordained penal colony - as a metaphor for alienation and infernal locale for one's never-ending worst nightmare.

Trevor Fear is Lecturer in Classical Studies at the Open University. He was educated at the University of Bristol and Durham and completed his PhD at the University of Southern California. This is his first book.

One of the world’s most recognisable and enduring historical figures, Cleopatra’s life was short and turbulent but it is her legend that marks her as the most durable figure in human culture. Trevor Fear looks at the earliest portraits of Cleopatra – negative ones by Antony’s detractors and Octavian supporters of Horace, Propertius and Virgil; at Plutarch’s famous Life of St Antony; at Shakespeare’s lush and luxuriantly poetical Antony and Cleopatra; at Cleopatra’s reception in the Victorian age, notably in the burlesque entertainments of the day; at Cleopatra in Hollywood: with recent portrayals of Cleopatra in Xena: Warrior Princess and HBO/BBC’s Rome; and at new millennium and thirdwave feminist interpretations, especially where these intersect with culture, politics and ethnicity.

HISTORY / WORLD WAR II / MILITARY HISTORY / EASTERN FRONT

Author Rolf-Dieter Müller is Professor of Military History at Humboldt University, Berlin; Scientific Director of the German Armed Forces Military History Research Institute in Potsdam; and Coordinator of the ‘The German Reich and the Second World War’ project. He is the author of numerous publications on World War II including The Unknown Eastern Front: The Wehrmacht and Hitler’s Foreign Soldiers (I.B.Tauris).

Operation Barbarossa, Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, led to one of the most brutal campaigns of World War II: of the estimated 70 million people who died in World War II, over 30 million died on the Eastern Front. Although it has previously been argued that the campaign was a pre-emptive strike, in fact, Hitler had been planning a war of intervention against the USSR ever since he came to power in 1933. Using previously unseen sources, acclaimed military historian Rolf-Dieter Müller shows that Hitler and the Wehrmacht had begun to negotiate with Poland and had even considered an alliance with Japan soon after taking power. Despite the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, at the declaration of war in September 1939, military engagement with the Red Army was still a very real and imminent possibility. In this book, Müller takes us behind the scenes of the Wehrmacht High Command, providing a fascinating insight into an unknown story of World War II.

House of Osman Ottoman Sultan’s and their Empire

JOHN FREELY

Key Selling Points   

Popular author on a popular subject Unique topic Essential reading for history readers, Ottomanophiles, Turkophiles

Description

MANUSCRIPT: OCTOBER 2015 PUBLICATION: 2016 PRICE: £18.99 EXTENT: 320 PAGES IMAGES: 20 INTEGRATED BW

Author John Freely is one of the most widely respected writers of travel books, histories and guides about Greece and Turkey. He is the author of The Grand Turk, Storm on Horseback, Children of Achilles, The Cyclades, The Ionian Islands, The Western Shores of Turkey, Strolling through Athens, Strolling through Venice and the bestselling Strolling through Istanbul (all I.B.Tauris). He lives in Istanbul.

This is the story of the House of Osman, the dynasty of sultans who ruled the Ottoman Empire for more than seven centuries. Known to the Turks as the Osmanli, they reigned over an empire that at its peak stretched from the Danube to the Nile and from Algiers to Baghdad. The Osmanli established their first capital at Bursa in 1326, their second at Edirne c. 1360, and then in 1453, after their conquest of Constantinople, Turkish Istanbul. They set up their capital here, where it would remain until 1923, when the Turkish Republic emerged from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. The book will be arranged as a collection of biographies of the thirty-six sultans who ruled in turn through twenty-one generations, a span of some 740 years. The House of Osman will tell the story of this extraordinary family, the various sultans and their women and children, framed within the history of the Ottoman Empire.

Praise for the Author ‘Freely is a lover of all things Turkish . . . and it’s refreshing to have a guide written by a former commando rather than the usual backpackers.’ – Independent (review for Storm on Horseback).

Kösem was a Greek girl from the Cyclades islands, who was captured by the Turks and sold in the Istanbul slave market to the Topkapi as a concubine. She became the favourite of Sultan Ahmet I (1603-17), and was, intriguingly, the power behind the throne during his reign and those of her two mad sons, Murat IV (1623-40) and Ibrahim (1640-8), as well as in the early years of that of her grandson Mehmet IV – The Grand Turk (1648-87) – before she was finally murdered by Mehmet’s mother Turhan Hadice. Here, for the first time, is the story of a girl who became one of the most powerful queens in history, illuminating the fifty years of her rule, which was one of the most colourful of the Ottoman period in Istanbul.

Praise for John Freely ‘Freely abounds in colourful details…’ – Philip Mansel, The Independent. ‘[The Western Shores of Turkey is an] enchanting guide…a work of genuine scholarship, lightly worn and charmingly conveyed. I fell in love with the book and stayed enamoured until the final page.’ – Paul Bailey, The Sunday Times.

MANUSCRIPT: SEPTEMBER 2014 PUBLICATION: DECEMBER 2015 PRICE: £25 EXTENT: 304 PAGES IMAGES: 50 INTEGRATED BW, 5 MAPS, 16PP COLOUR PLATES MIDDLE EAST STUDIES/ HISTORY/ ISLAMIC STUDIES/ TRAVEL

Author Dionisius A. Agius is Al Qasimi Professor of Arabic Studies and Islamic Material Culture at the University of Exeter. He is the author of In the Wake of the Dhow (1999); and, most recently, Classic Ships of Islam: From Mesopotamia to the Indian Ocean (2008).

For centuries the waters of the Red Sea have been amongst the most hazardous and feared in the world. Strong or erratic winds have taken lives and broken boats, smashed against rocks or hidden sandbars. Pirates too have menaced: some out for booty alone, others for slaves. Many seafarers have been terrified by the capricious genies of the ocean, and only by prayer and ritual might crew members hope to ward off any disaster or evil that might befall their ship. Central to this archetypal and perilous maritime scene has been the dhow, the versatile sailing craft that survives to this day and that for many hundreds of years has linked the commercial and pilgrim centres of sea and desert. In his new book Dionisius A. Agius, one of the foremost scholars of Islamic material culture, offers a lucid and wide-ranging history of the iconic dhow from medieval to modern times. While the history of global and seafaring exploration is more popular than ever, seaborne discovery from Islamic lands remains an understudied subject. Whether discussing trade and salt routes; shoals and wind patterns; spice harvest seasons; litanies and votive offerings to the sea; or the deep and resonant connection between language, memory and oral tradition, this is the first book to place the dhow in its full and remarkable cultural contexts.

Praise for the Author

Agius’ book ... is an impressive achievement enhanced by the lucid and pleasing manner in which he writes.’ – James Taylor, The British-Yemeni Society (review for In the Wake of the Dhow).

Ethics, History and Global Politics The Role of Religious and Moral Values in the Modern World

ROBIN W. LOVIN Key Selling Points   

MANUSCRIPT: OCTOBER 2014 PUBLICATION: SUMMER 2015 PRICE: £17.99 EXTENT: 288 PAGES

RELIGION / ETHICS / POLITICS AND GEOPOLITICS/ HISTORY/ CURRENT AFFAIRS

Author Robin W. Lovin is Cary M. Maguire University Professor of Ethics at Southern Methodist University. His previous books include Reinhold Niebuhr and Christian Realism (1994), Christian Ethics: An Essential Guide (2000) and Christian Realism and the New Realities (2008).

Big ideas book exploring a hugely important topic: the role of values in public life Author one of the most prominent and respected ethical thinkers in USA Multi-disciplinary sales: from religion, philosophy, politics and beyond

Description

Modern thought has been reluctant to introduce questions of ultimate belief and value into political discourse. The unfashionable idea that there might be a common good in the fragmented context of the world's diverse societies, with their many separate institutions, cultures and religions, runs against the contemporary grain. Despite this, it is a paradox that people are more than ever eager to reach shared understandings with others, even when confronted by so much difference and wellpublicized division (for example between 'radical Islam' and 'the West'). This substantial and important book argues that while cultural and religious barriers are real, they need not set limits to our moral concerns. For Robin W Lovin, moral health is achievable when each of the basic spheres of life - political, economic, cultural and religious - is functioning well, and able to head off any disproportionate claims the others may make. Ranging creatively across the history of ethics and Western philosophy, from Plato and Aristotle to Adam Smith and Richard Neuhaus, the author offers a fresh and imaginative reading of moral value and its place within public life and the political order.

Praise for the Author ‘Robin Lovin's Reinhold Niebuhr and Christian Realism is a lively, reliable, and well-written contribution to the study of Neibuhr's thought.’ – International Studies in Philosophy ‘Of all the works published about Reinhold Niebuhr in the quarter century since he died, this is surely one of the best.’ – Max L. Stackhouse, Journal of Religion (review for Reinhold Niebuhr and Christian Realism).

Beyond its housing estates and identikit high streets there is another Britain. This is the Britain of mist-drenched forests and unpredictable sea-frets: of wraith-like fog banks, druidic mistletoe and peculiar creatures that lurk, half-unseen, in the undergrowth, tantalising and teasing just at the periphery of human vision. How have the remarkably persistent folkloric traditions of the British Isles formed and been formed by the psyches of those who inhabit them? In this sparkling new history, Carolyne Larrington explores the diverse ways in which a myriad of fantastical beings has moulded the nation’s cultural history. Fairies, elves and goblins here tread purposefully, sometimes malignly, over an eerie landscape that also conceals brownies, selkies, trows, knockers, boggarts, land-wights, Jack o’Lanterns, Barguests, the sinister Nuckleavee and Black Shuck: a terrifying hell-hound of the Norfolk coast with eyes of burning coal. Ranging from Shetland to Jersey and from Ireland to East Anglia, while evoking the Wild Hunt, the ghostly bells of Lyonesse and the dread fenlands haunted by Grendel, this is a book that will captivate all those who long for the wild places: the mountains and chasms where giants lie in wait.

Praise for the Author

‘A valuable addition to any Arthurian library’ – Sherron Lux, Sixteenth Century Journal (review for King Arthur’s Enchantresses). ‘Beneath its scholarly cloak, Carolyn Larrington’s new book is marvellously subversive and entertaining’ – Bernard Cornwell, The Times (review for King Arthur’s Enchantresses).

Afterlife

A History of Life after Death

PHILIP C. ALMOND Key Selling Points   

The topic of life after death is one that promotes much discussion Philip Almond is a proven and ‘bankable’ author Likely to receive much attention from broadsheet and literary reviews

Description

MANUSCRIPT: OCTOBER 2015 PUBLICATION:SEPTEMBER 2015 PRICE: £25 EXTENT: 288 PAGES IMAGES: 40 INTEGRATED BW

Author Philip C Almond is Emeritus Professor of Religion in the University of Queensland. His previous books include The Witches of Warboys: An Extraordinary Story of Sorcery, Sadism and Satanic Possession (2008), England’s First Demonologist: Reginald Scot and The Discoverie of Witchcraft (2011) and The Lancashire Witches: A Chronicle of Sorcery and Death on Pendle Hill (2012), all published by I.B.Tauris. His most recent book, The Devil, has just been published.

Whether through the speculative idea of the existence of Limbo – shadowy receptacle for those who have died in a state of original sin and have yet escaped damnation – or the more familiar ideas of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory, over many centuries, people have cast around for ways to explain what happens to human beings after death. The Greeks had Hades, while the ancient Hebrews imagined a sinister place called She’ol (the grave or pit), an underworld populated by shades (‘rephraim’) and spirits undifferentiated by either their good or bad deeds. This brutal lack of ambiguity, in determining eternal reward or punishment, finds an echo in Rilke’s tenth Duino Elegy, and also in Ursula Le Guin’s finest Earthsea novel The Farthest Shore, when both poet and novelist explore the twilight world of the dead that exists beneath a landscape of unwinking stars at the foot of the mountains of Rage or Pain. But as Philip Almond here shows, whichever metaphor has been employed by theologians, writers or philosophers, it has tended to oscillate between one of either two poles: resurrection of the dead or immortality of the soul, a nexus which reflects the root influence of both the Old Testament and Greek Platonic philosophy and the struggles, compromises and tense interactions between them.

Of all the literature present on C.S. Lewis none before have examined how eastern tales, from Arabian epics to Persian myths and folklore, influenced this world-famous writer. Warwick Ball, writer, specialist and enthusiast of Middle Eastern culture and literature, carefully examines how The Narnia Chronicles references Afghan legends, Persian illustrations, Sufism, ancient desert cultures and tales of enchanted gardens and portals. Ball even finds evidence that suggests that Narnia, a tale often understood as a collection of allegorical Christian tales, had its origins in tales from the Qu’ran. An endlessly fascinating subject, Warwick Ball’s contribution is one that is sure to provide a unique perspective on a popular subject. Praise for the Author 'Truly remarkable and wide ranging survey ... a book that, without any doubt, is premier in this new view of Rome in the east.' – Minerva (review for Rome of the East). Captain Gill’s Walking Stick The True Story of the Sinai Murders

SAUL KELLY Key Selling Points   

Fascinating account of a Victorian murder mystery Linked to the Jack the Ripper murders which are notorious worldwide Will appeal to trade markets

Description

MANUSCRIPT: SEPTEMBER 2015 PUBLICATION:FALL 2016 PRICE: £17.99 EXTENT: 272 PAGES IMAGES: 25 BW INTEGRATED

Author

Saul Kelly is Reader in International History in the Defence Studies Department, King’s College London/ Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham. He is an expert on the great powers in North Africa and the Middle East in the nineteenth and twentieth century; Anglo-American Relations, British Foreign Policy from the nineteenth century to present, British and European Imperial History and the Cold War.

In 1882, three British men – Captain William John Gill, an explorer, army officer and spy; Flag-Lieutenant Harold Charrington, a young naval officer and Professor Edward Henry Palmer, a prominent, if eccentric, Cambridge academic were brutally murdered in the Sinai desert by a group of Bedouin. The murders shocked Victorian Britain and an investigation was ordered, in an attempt to bring the killers to justice. This investigation, led by Colonel Sir Charles Warren, who later found fame as the police officer charged with investigating the Jack the Ripper murders, used early espionage and intelligence techniques to uncover what had happened to the men. Saul Kelly reveals that the Sinai Murders were not an unfortunate random killing or a botched robbery, as has often been assumed, but were the result of twenty years of British secret service activity in the region – surrounding the building of the Suez Canal. This book, therefore, is an account of British Secret Service operations in the desert, from 1860-1885, with the murders – and subsequent investigation – as the centre-piece. Using previously-unseen archives, it uncovers exactly what the British were up to in the Middle East – and lifts a lid on a darker side of empire.

Praise for the Author ‘Kelly has a superb cast, wide canvas and great plot and his writing lives up to them’ - Andrew Roberts, BBC History (review for The Hunt for Zerzura). ‘Finally, a reliable, popular account of The English Patient-era North African desert exploration’ – Publishers Weekly (review for The Lost Oasis).

Author, Celeste-Marie Bernier, an American and British scholar of the arts, believes that this book belongs to the African-American artists who are ‘determined to push aesthetic boundaries in order to debate the powerful legacies of transatlantic slavery, civil rights activism and black power struggles’. A History of Contemporary African American Art will examine the work of artists produced over the past twenty years focusing on sculpture work, painting, photography, quilt-making, mixed media, and digital and video performance art. As more AfricanAmerican artists are recognised for their contributions to the modern art world, this book will prove to be an essential guide and study.

In this enthralling book, body art and modification expert Matt Lodder establishes a chronological survey of an often misunderstood and much mythologised mode of art-making from the sumptuous, gilded artisanal studios of Victorian London, via the bawdy dockside spaces of the 1950s, through to the seemingly ubiquitous tattoo culture of the twenty-first century.

Your Friend Likes This Picture How the Art World Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Internet

MORGAN QUAINTANCE We now live in a century where ‘everybody is an artist’ and the art world has been irrevocably altered.

Author

Morgan Quaintance is a writer, broadcaster and curator. He regularly contributes to Art Monthly, Art Review and Frieze and since 2012 has produced and presented a weekly radio programme on international contemporary art for Resonance FM in London called Studio Visit. In July this year he co-produced and presented a documentary on contemporary art in Africa for BBC2’s flagship arts programme The Culture Show. He is currently in discussion with the BBC about the possibility of creating a television series about art and the Internet.

29

Social networking, video hosting, blog and news aggregator websites, such as Facebook, YouTube, Wordpress and Buzzfeed are now inextricable features of daily life, and have, Morgan Quaintance argues, locked users into a never-ending cycle of content generation, circulation and manipulation. In other words, everybody is an artist today because the internet demands it. Part historical survey of the evolution of net.art from its origins in the early 90s to its dissolution into just another medium today; part artist interviews; and part in-depth analysis of seminal artworks, exhibitions and philosophical positions, Your Friend Likes This Photo will explore how digital culture has affected the theory and practice of contemporary art that is either sited on the internet, or specifically concerned with the digital. Unique in its meshing of art, culture, society and the internet this book will be critically informed yet accessible; honest about the fact that no-one really knows how to make sense of the new digital culture in which we all find ourselves webbed.
