I.B.Tauris 2014 Dear Reader, We are delighted to introduce our latest catalogue of titles in Visual Culture. As ever, the list demonstrates our commitment to publishing fine critical writing and cutting-edge scholarship on contemporary art, photography and architecture, international cinema and media, cultural and media theory, fashion design and popular culture. Brand new to our publishing this year are four new innovative series. The Drawing In series challenges the boundaries of contemporary drawing, and the Contemporary Visual Culture in North Africa and the Middle East series from Ibraaz examines the current production, reception and dissemination of visual culture within the Middle East, North Africa and beyond. Distilled into ten volumes, the Behind the Silver Screen series will cover for the first time the collaborative art, craft, business and history of filmmaking from inception to reality. The Library of Gender and Popular Culture explores the intersection of gender and popular culture engaging with a variety of texts – drawn primarily from Art, fashion TV, Cinema, Cultural Studies and Media Studies – as a way of considering various models for understanding the complimentary relationship between gender identities and popular culture. We are privileged to work with authors dedicated to developing exciting new approaches and offering fresh perspectives in the world of the visual arts and we welcome new proposals from writers similarly passionate about their subjects. BLACK ARTISTS IN BRITISH ART

Relational Aesthetics and Cultural Difference Renate Dohmen

NEW

A History from 1950 to the Present Eddie Chambers, University of Texas at Austin

Black artists have been making major contributions to the British art scene for decades, since at least the middle of the twentieth century. Sometimes, these artists – with backgrounds in the countries of Africa, the Caribbean and South Asia – were regarded and embraced as British practitioners of note and merit. At other times, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s, they were not. In response, on occasion, Britain’s black artists came together and made their own exhibitions or created their own gallery spaces. In this book, Eddie Chambers tells the story of Britain’s black artists, from the 1950s onwards, including the contemporary art of Steve McQueen, Chris Ofili and Yinka Shonibare.

Globalization, Mobility and Suspension in Visual Culture

Stephanie Hemelryk Donald, University of New South Wales and Christoph Lindner, University of Amsterdam We usually associate contemporary urban life with movement and speed. But what about those instances when the forms of mobility associated with globalized cities – the flow of capital, people, labour and information – freeze, or decelerate? How can we assess the value of interruption in a city? What does valuing stillness mean in regards to the forward march of globalization? Bringing together original contributions by international specialists from the fields of architecture, photography, film, sociology and cultural analysis, this cutting-edge book considers the poetics and politics of inertia in cities and encourages a re-assessment of what it means to be urban. Art and Critical Theory NEW YORK, NEW WAVE

RENEGOTIATING THE BODY

Feminist Art in 1970s London Kathy Battista

NEW

The Legacy of Feminist Artists in Emerging Practices Kathy Battista, Sotheby’s Institute of Art, New York

New York is a centre of creative production for an exciting, emerging generation of women artists. Their work investigates themes such as the body as medium and subject matter; the deconstruction of the existing patriarchal order of the art world; the appropriation of earlier art historical references; and the use of so-called abject and everyday materials. New York, New Wave investigates the relevance of earlier feminist practice for this ‘new’ generation, asking: does gender difference still play a role in today’s practice? How can younger women artists embrace a radical political ideology and yet remain market friendly? How far have these artists diverged from the established feminist ‘tradition’?

Materiality, Photography and Society Michael A. Crang

‘Play art’ or interactive art is becoming a central concept in the contemporary art world, disrupting the traditional role of passive observance usually assumed by audiences, allowing them active participation. UGLINESS

NEW

The Non-Beautiful in Art and Theory Andrei Pop and Mechtild Widrich (Eds)

NEW

The Art of Relation Timothy Mathews, UCL

Ugliness is very much alive in the history of art. From ritual invocations of mythic monsters to the scare tactics of the early 20th-century avant-garde, from the cabinet of curiosities to the identity politics of today, the ugly has been every bit as active as the beautiful, and often much more of a reality… Why then has it been so neglected? This book seeks to remedy this oversight through both broad theoretical reflection and concrete case studies of ugliness in various historical and cultural contexts. 328 PAGES 234 X 156MM DECEMBER 2013 9781780766454 HARDBACK £62.00 71 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS INT. Timothy Mathews explores the themes of fragility, trauma, space, and relationality in Giacometti’s art and the texts that respond or refer to them: the novels of W.G. Sebald, Samuel Beckett and Cees Nooteboom, and the theories of Bertolt Brecht, Maurice Blanchot and Walter Benjamin. This book asks what encounters with Giacometti’s pieces can tell us about the history of our own time, and our ways of looking; about the nature of human attachment, and the humility of relating to art. 304 PAGES 234 X 156MM NOVEMBER 2013 9781780767864 HARDBACK £59.50 9781780767871 PAPERBACK £17.99 25 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS

IBRAAZ

Contemporary Visual Culture in the Middle East and North Africa

Series Editor: Anthony Downey I.B.Tauris and Ibraaz Publishing are pleased to introduce an exciting new book series: Contemporary Visual Culture in the Middle and East North Africa. Focusing on historical and global contexts, this series will examine the current production, reception and dissemination of visual culture within the Middle East, North Africa and beyond. Ibraaz is the leading online critical forum for contemporary visual culture in the Middle East and North Africa. Contemporary Visual Culture in the Middle and East North Africa.will maintain current scholarly accounts of developments in the region and draw upon the immediacy of work by internationally renowned and emerging academics, writers, artists, museum directors, curators, activists and filmmakers. Whilst recent events have given topical purchase to debates about the perceived role of culture during a time of revolution and crisis, books in this series will seek to ground these discussions in the historical conditions that have informed contemporary cultural practices and the institutional contexts out of which they have emerged over the last two decades.

UNCOMMON GROUNDS

NEW

New Media and Critical Practice in the Middle East and North Africa Anthony Downey (Ed.) This is the first book to explore the prominent role that new media has come to play in artistic practices and the public sphere in the Middle East and North Africa today. Inside, writers and artists from within and without the region consider the ways in which contemporary art both engages with and challenges social activism. Contemporary artists are not only developing the critical field of new media, but are also being co-opted on a global level, via mass media, into the aesthetics of revolution and the art of protest. The first volume in the Ibraaz series, Uncommon Grounds features cutting-edge critical analyses and original, full-colour artists’ inserts. 240 PAGES 234 X 156MM JUNE 2014 9781784530358 PAPERBACK £17.99

TERRORIST TRANSGRESSIONS NEW

Gender and the Visual Culture of the Terrorist Sue Malvern, University of Reading and Gabriel Koureas, Birkbeck University of London (Eds)

Griselda Pollock and Max Silvermann both at University of Leeds (Eds) Through readings of film, art, photographic and literary practices, Concentrationary Memories analyses different cultural responses to concentrationary terror in the postwar period, ranging from Auschwitz to Argentina. These readings show how those involved in the cultural production of memories of the horror of totalitarianism sought to find forms, languages and image systems which could make sense of and resist the post-war condition in which, as Hannah Arendt famously stated, ‘everything is possible’ and ‘human beings as human beings become superfluous’. HYPERDRAWING Beyond the Lines of Contemporary Art TRACEY

NEW

Through the Lines of Contemporary Art TRACEY

This is the third book in the innovative TRACEY series on contemporary drawing. Drawing Ambiguity builds upon its predecessors, Drawing Now and Hyperdrawing, by proposing that a position of ambiguity, a lack of definition, is not only desirable within fine art drawing but also necessary – having the capacity to enable and sustain drawing practices. What happens if we are ambivalent to what is drawing, or what drawing is? The Editors Russell Marshall and Phil Sawdon bring together seven invited contributions to offer multiple perspectives from within and without the fine art drawing field to respond to these questions. Contributors include artist Ilana Halperin, artist-researcher Deborah Harty, artist and founder member of the group Underworld Karl Hyde, the creative collaboration Kreider + O’Leary, artist, writer Michael Phillipson, artist, academic Rob Ward, editors Marshall and Sawdon together with an Introduction by the artist, writer, curator Derek Horton.

NEW SERIES

Drawing In

Series Editors: Russell Marshall, Marsha Meskimmon and Phil Sawdon In recent years, ‘thinking though drawing’ has become a ubiquitous trope – not only in the arts, but in the sciences and humanities too. This affords an exciting opportunity for sustained intellectual dialogues to emerge within, between and without traditional disciplinary boundaries. Drawing In provides a space where new perspectives and critical approaches in drawing can be brought together and explored. This innovative series includes books for general readers, scholarly monographs and edited anthologies – which emerge from the diverse fields of art and design history and theory, fine art, design, drawing pedagogy, technology, geography, science, engineering and even medicine. Some are practice-led and driven by creative textual strategies that move beyond the page; all contribute original perspectives on how drawing facilitates and manifests the production, acquisition and understanding of knowledge. DRAWING DIFFERENCE

NEW

An Allotropic Approach Marsha Meskimmon and Phil Sawdon

Could the increasing prominence of both drawing and feminist practice in the arts since the mid-1970s be more than coincidental? Drawing Difference argues for an allotropic relationship between difference and drawing, a relationship of elemental connection, where each shares significant affinities of context and convention. The book begins with a close reading of three works (by Annette Messager, Dorothea Rockburne, Carolee Schneemann) from the 1970s that are of critical interest to both feminist art history and the on-going development of fine art drawing as a field in its own right. These three ‘keyworks’ are brought into dialogue with a small number of more contemporary drawing practices (Marco Maggi, Toba Khedoori, Susan Hauptmann, Sian Bowen among others), such that they become (re)iterative sites, active and repetitive marks, inscribing meaning in differing formations with each appearance. An allotropic approach unfolds the argument in three parts (Approaching,Tropes, Coinciding) through detailed attention to, and the creative attenuation of, shared tropes (Dialogue, Matter, Open). 224 PAGES 216 X 134MM FEBRUARY 2015 9781784530266 HARDBACK £52.50 9781784530273 PAPERBACK £16.99 50 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS

MONOCHROME

NEW

Darkness and Light in Contemporary Art Craig Staff

Drawing together art criticism – including Stendhal’s longneglected writings on painting – and art theory, philosophy, literary criticism and theatre, Margaret MacNamidhe demonstrates that Delacroix was a more complicated and rewarding painter than he has been taken to be. What emerges from this fascinating, original study is a wholly new way of thinking about French painting in the 1820s and beyond. This brilliant close reading compels a rethinking not only of Delacroix’s place in art history, but also of Romanticism’s place in the tradition of French painting. 256 PAGES 280X240MM NOVEMBER 2014 9781780769370 HARDBACK £29.50 60 COLOUR ILLUSTRATIONS

CONTEMPORARY THINKERS REFRAMED

INTERPRETING KEY THINKERS FOR THE ARTS

Are you baffled by Baudrillard? Dazed by Deleuze? Confused by Kristeva? Other guides can feel as impenetrable as the original texts to those who ‘think in images’. Contemporary Thinkers Reframed instead uses the language of the arts to explore the usefulness in practice of complex ideas. Short, contemporary and accessible, these lively books utilize actual examples of artworks, films, television shows, works of architecture, fashion and even computer games to explain and explore the work of the most commonly taught thinkers. Conceived specifically for the visually minded, the series will prove invaluable to students right across the visual arts.

AGAMBEN REFRAMED

Interpreting Key Thinkers for the Arts Dan Smith, Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London One of the most influential living cultural theorists, Agamben’s ideas continue to engage and trouble students for whom he is an ever more vital part of the theoretical terrain. The first book to offer an accessible account of Agamben’s work in relation to visual culture, Agamben Reframed turns Agamben’s model of politics into a powerful and convincing account of art. Seeking a sustained encounter between contemporary visual culture and Agamben’s world of critical ideas, Dan Smith examines works that mirror the extreme and difficult topography of Agamben. Ideas of the destruction of real experience and the groundlessness of everyday life feed into the contested presence of the body as spectacle and commodity to demand the reimagining of modes of representation as well as social and political forms. BADIOU REFRAMED

NEW

NEW

Interpreting Key Thinkers for the Arts

Alex Ling, University of Melbourne

He has been regarded with suspicion by some, as an anti-postmodernist who dared to write about unfashionable concepts such as truth and meaning. But in recent years, the philosopher Alain Badiou has risen in prominence, pioneering new ways to produce, conceptualise and discover art. Badiou Reframed is an original book about an original thinker which applies – for the first time – Badiou’s philosophy to the visual arts. The three central concepts of this philosophy – ‘being and appearing’, ‘event and subject’ and ‘truth and ethics’ – are elucidated through detailed analysis of a range of visual artworks, including the films of Jean-Luc Godard, Marcel Duchamp’s readymades, the cubist works of Picasso and Braque, the sculpture of Constantin Brancusi and Ossip Zadkine, Kazimir Malevich’s suprematist paintings and Steve McQueen’s film Hunger. In focusing on Badiou’s critical relationship with the visual arts, Alex Ling reinterprets and represents not only the man, but art itself. Interpreting Key Thinkers for the Arts Graham Jones, Federation University Lyotard’s thoughts on the postmodern have often been misunderstood or misrepresented. Lyotard Reframed provides a clear and original introduction to Lyotard’s work on the postmodern and his philosophy more generally, demonstrating its on-going relevance to creative endeavour and debates concerning the value and significance of the visual arts. It also situates Lyotard’s discussion of the postmodern in the context of his other key concepts: the Figural, the Libidinal and the Sublime. Written for students, teachers and those interested in the arts more generally, ‘Lyotard Reframed’ employs numerous examples drawn from painting, cinema and comic books, to illustrate the significance of these ideas and to explore their links with phenomenology, Marxism, structuralism, psychoanalysis and deconstruction. It also presents a glossary of relevant concepts and a useful guide to further reading. JANUARY 2014 160 PAGES 174 X 124MM 9781845116804 PAPERBACK £12.99

Art and Critical Theory Art and …

Art and … is a series of intelligently written and highly readable illustrated books for the gallery-goer and student. The series takes as its starting points both that art matters – that it has a real and important connection to the world in which we live – and that contemporary art, sometimes difficult or unapproachable, need not equate to difficult writing. In selecting themes, we have aligned art with those perennial issues such as sex and war which trouble generation after generation, as well as those specifically contemporary issues – recent scientific advances and advertising for example – to show how art both reflects and influences the wider world.

Art and Critical Theory After theory: do we abandon ‘the theoretical turn’, or do we work with it differently? The New Encounters series brings together major international commentators and also introduces a new generation of thinkers. Resisting both the rejection of theory and the current displacement of art history in favour of visual culture, New Encounters instead rejuvenates both approaches. Marked out by their critical engagement with and close informed readings of images, texts and cultural events, these books employ fresh feminist, postcolonial and queer perspectives. New Encounters also showcases exciting new volumes which revisit key figures in 20th-century art through highly original feminist approaches.

VISUAL POLITICS OF PSYCHOANALYSIS Art and the Image in Post-Traumatic Cultures Griselda Pollock (Ed.)

In this innovative collection, a distinguished group of international authors dare to think psychoanalytically about the legacies of political violence and suffering in relation to post-traumatic cultures worldwide. They build on maverick art historian Aby Warburg’s project of combining social, cultural, anthropological and psychological analyses of the image in order to track the undercurrents of cultural violence in the representational repertoire of Western modernity. Drawing on postcolonial and feminist theory, they analyze the image and the aesthetic in conditions of historical trauma, from enslavement and colonization to the Irish Famine, from Denmark’s national trauma about migrants and cartoons to collective shock after 9/11, from individual traumas of loss registered in allegory to newsreels and documentaries on suicide bombing in Israel/Palestine and from Kristeva’s novels to Kathryn Bigelow’s cinema. 288 PAGES 234 X 156MM 9781780763156 HARDBACK £62.00 9781780763163 PAPERBACK £18.99 60 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS

At this moment of transition from analogue to digital, Digital Snaps aims to develop a new media ecology that can accommodate these changes to photography ‘as we know it’. Expert contributors representing varied disciplines demonstrate how and to what extent the traditional social practices, technologies and images of analogue photography are being transformed with digital photography. 288 PAGES 234 X 156MM DECEMBER 2013 9781780763316 HARDBACK £62.00 9781780763323 PAPERBACK £16.99 35 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF VISUAL CULTURE,VOL. 7

A New History and Future of the Photographic Image Jai McKenzie, Sydney College of the Arts

Light and Photomedia proposes that, regardless of technological change, the history and future of photomedia are essentially connected to light: it is a fundamental property of photomedia, binding with space and time to form and inform new, explicitly light-based structures and experiences. Jai McKenzie identifies light-space-time structures throughout the history of photomedia, from the early image machines through analogue and digital image machines to the present day. She proposes that they will continue to develop in the future, and takes us to future image machines of the year 2039.

Formerly a British colony, the island of Cyprus is now a divided country, where histories of political and cultural conflicts remain contested. Cyprus provides the ideal case study for this innovative exploration, extensively illustrated, of how the practice of photography in relation to its political, cultural and economic contexts both contributes and responds to the formation of identity.

Architecture, the City and the Politics of Representation Mark Dorrian

This book brings together a series of critical writings developed over the last twelve years by Mark Dorrian. Focusing on issues of elevated vision, spectacle, atmosphere and the limits of aesthetic experience, it presents new kinds of readings of key phenomena in historical and contemporary visual culture. Seamlessly traversing sources drawn from architecture, art, literature and film, the collection offers startlingly innovative explorations of material ranging from the optical politics of George IV’s visit to Edinburgh in 1822, to the Cold War context of Charles and Ray Eames’ celebrated film Powers of Ten, to the visual phonicity of Anish Kapoor’s gargantuan artwork Marsyas. Since the revolutionary unrest of the 1960s, the concept of ‘participation’ in art and architecture has lost its utopian glow and become part of a debate about the role of the spectator and dweller in space. Critics see in participation only technocratic control, while others embrace it as a viable politics in an era of global capitalism. 320 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2014 9781784530303 HARDBACK £62.00 50 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS

Uniform, Civilian Clothing and Trappings, 1914–1918 Nina Edwards

Fashionable clothing, in both revealing and concealing the body, is an excellent communicator of a person’s identity, which in turn can assume social and moral significance in coding someone as ‘respectable’ or as an outsider; as deviant. This book explores the relationship between fashion and criminality. It sets out to develop from interdisciplinary perspectives, new ways of seeing everyday dress and the individual body in the public space. 288 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2014 9781780766980 HARDBACK £62.00 9781780766997 PAPERBACK £16.99 20 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS

DRESS BEHIND BARS

FASHIONING THE FEMININE

Prison Clothing as Criminality ‘Clothes have a language that illuminates the social and cultural significance of the circumstances in which they are worn. This is particularly true in wartime. Dressed for War is a fascinating and immensely readable account of what and how both the military, and civilians dressed, during the First World War. An apparently trivial subject turns out to have a profundity that adds a rich dimension to our understanding of the Great War in this its centenary year.’ – Juliet Gardiner

Exploring the connections between clothing, commerce and creativity in global contexts Series Editors: Reina Lewis and Elizabeth Wilson Advisory Board: Christopher Breward, Hazel Clarke, Joanne Entwistle, Caroline Evans, Susan Kaiser, Angela McRobbie, Hiroshi Narumi, Peter O’Neill, Özlem Sandıkçı, Simona Segre-Rerinach The Dress Cultures series aims to bring the best of international scholarship on the historical and contemporary study of dress and material culture into creative dialogue with sociological, political and economic analyses of fashion and the fashion industry. The series includes monographs and texts designed for scholars, students and followers of fashion, with relevance for cultural studies, politics, economics and cultural and social history, written accessibly and representing their authors’ innovative scholarship. Dress Cultures represents the best of new research in books that: • Explore Western, non-Western and diaspora dress cultures. • Map the evolving geographies of fashion and retail as informed by a historicized understanding of production, distribution, mediation and consumption. • Examine modern and historical dress and material culture. • Trace the ways in which production, marketing and purchasing of clothes in a global context fashions individual and collective identities. • Explore the representation and regulation of the clothed body. • Investigate tensions between the homogenizing aesthetics of globalization and localized distinction and differentiation.

THINKING THROUGH FASHION

NEW

A Guide to Key Theorists Agnés Rocamora and Anneke Smelik (Eds)

The field of fashion is now a major topic of enquiry in social and cultural theory. However, students often find it difficult to apply key social and cultural theoretical frameworks and concepts to their study of fashion. This book is designed to fill this gap for a ‘how’ to think through fashion. Each chapter is a guide through the work of a selected major thinker, such as Marx, Freud, Simmel, Benjamin, Bakhtin, Barthes, Goffman, Deleuze, Foucault, Baudrillard and Butler, introducing key concepts and ideas, discussing how they have been appropriated by various authors to engage with the topics of fashion, dress and appearance, and looking at other ways in which they can be taken over to reflect on these topics. 320 PAGES 234 X 156MM NOVEMBER 2014 9781780767338 HARDBACK £62.00 9781780767345 PAPERBACK £16.99 40 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS DRESS CULTURES

American Identity and the Cinema of International Relations Elizabeth Rawitsch

Frank Capra has long had a reputation as being the quintessential American director – the man who perfectly captured the core values of the United States with classic films including It Happened One Night and It’s a Wonderful Life. However, as Elizabeth Rawitsch argues, Capra’s construction of national identity did not occur within an exclusively national context. She points out that many of his films are actually set in China, Latin America, the Philippines and the South Seas. 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM JUNE 2014 9781780768694 HARDBACK £58.00 26 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS

Precarious Lives and the Politics of Subjectivity Robert Watkins

Films both reflect and construct social reality, especially in the way they employ, affirm and critique the discourses through which we grasp political life. This book examines five contemporary feature films that engage some of the deepest attachments we have to two core political ideas – freedom and vengeance – asking: what do audiences learn about the meaning of freedom and of vengeance from these films? 224 PAGES 234 X 156MM OCTOBER 2014 9781784530105 HARDBACK £56.00 16 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF THE MOVING IMAGE

TAINTED LOVE NEW

Screening Sexual Perversities

Darren Kerr and Donna Peberdy both at Southampton Solent University (Eds)

From a near standing start in the 1970s, the emergence and expansion of an aesthetically and culturally distinctive Scottish cinema proved to be one of the most significant developments within late-twentieth and early twenty-first-century British film culture. Individual Scottish films and filmmakers have attracted notable amounts of critical attention as a result. The New Scottish Cinema is the first book to trace Scottish film culture’s industrial, creative and critical evolution in comprehensive detail across a forty-year period.

Tainted Love is the first critical anthology to offer extended analysis of the representation of sexual perversities on screen. Interrogating the recent shift towards the mainstream in the cinematic representation of previously marginalized sexual practices, it challenges the discourses and debates around sexual taboo, moral panics, degeneracy, deviance and disease, which present those who enact such sexualities as modern folk devils. This timely collection brings together leading scholars who draw on a variety of critical approaches including adaptation, performance, cultural studies, queer theory, feminism and philosophy to examine screen representations of controversial sexualities from the weird and wonderful to the debased and debauched.

HOLLYWOOD RIOTS

NEW

The American Family in Contemporary Hollywood Cinema Claire Jenkins, Bath Spa University

The large literature about the politics of Hollywood in the period of McCarthy and the blacklist has largely overlooked political filmmaking during those agitated years. Hollywood Riots examines the most vibrant cycle of independently produced political films made while House Committee on Un-American Activities was investigating communists in the film industry. In doing so, it shifts the focus from the politics of Washington to the politics of Los Angeles and from the films of the Hollywood Ten to the more politically complex films of the progressive community at large.

The Filmgoers’ Guide to the Great Science-Fiction Films Howard Hughes

Howard Hughes’ companion to science-fiction films goes deep into the landmark movies of this most popular of cinema genres, from Metropolis to Avatar and onwards, covering over 300 more. Copiously illustrated, the book discusses the ‘making of’ details, cast, sources, prequels, sequels, remakes and critical and box office fortunes of the core movies, as well as how generations of filmmakers have creatively used, occasionally abused, this most flexible of cinematic forms.

This trailblazing book provides an overview of films about women in sport and a timely critical analysis of their role in shaping perceptions of female athletic ability. It examines the themes of aggression, beauty, class, ethnicity, physical feminism, sexuality, synaesthesia and technology in relation to mainstream and art house cinematic depictions of sportswomen, from Pumping Iron 2 to Bend It like Beckham.

The process of deletion – the expurgation of files, emails, records and data, and with these the loss of identity and history – is a recurring concern of digital age science fiction film. Deletion, of course, is never absolute, or untraceable, rather it gives life to new shadowy processes and practices; it creates a new world order and new posthuman identities; it creates liquid space.

BEHIND THE SILVER SCREEN A MODERN HISTORY OF FILMMAKING

Series Editor: Jon Lewis The Behind the Silver Screen series of ten volumes will together cover for the first time the collaborative art, craft, business and history of filmmaking from inception to reality. Illustrated in black-and-white and colour, they also comprise the first full history of filmmaking. Following the first two books in the series on Cinematography and Screenwriting will be volumes devoted to directing, acting, producers, sound, animation, costume, art direction, editing and special effects.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

Behind the Silver Screen, Vol. 1 Patrick Keating, Trinity University, Texas (Ed.) Cinematography’s role as a science and an art is often forgotten. This book remedies the omission by examining the highlights of the art of the cinematographer and providing the first comprehensive overview of how the field has rapidly evolved, from the early silent film era to today’s new technologies. It shows how cinematography has been influenced by both technological advances and trends in the movie industry, from big-budget blockbusters to indie films, with detailed views of films and profiles of the great cinematographers. It enables readers to have a fresh eye for what appears on the screen. 256 PAGES, 234 X 156MM SEPTEMBER 2014 9781784530181 HARDBACK £58.00 9781784530198 PAPERBACK £14.99 40 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS, 8PP COLOUR SECTION BEHIND THE SILVER SCREEN

SCREENWRITING

Behind the Silver Screen, Vol. 2 Andrew Horton, University of Oklahoma and Julian Hoxter, San Francisco State University (Eds) The screenplay is where a film begins. Written by screenwriters and film scholars this book highlights the art of the screenwriter and the business of screenwriting from Hollywood’s silent beginnings through to today’s global multi-media marketplace. Focusing on key screenplays that changed the game in Hollywood and beyond and on how films from The Birth of a Nation to Chinatown began on the page, the book reveals the profound ways in which screenwriters contribute to films, as they try to capture the dreams, nightmares and concerns of the period in which they are writing. It is compelling reading for anyone interested or involved in the creative collaboration that generates the movies we see on the screen. 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM SEPTEMBER 2014 9781784530204 HARDBACK £56.00 9781784530211 PAPERBACK £14.99 40 B/W ILLUSTRATIONS, 8PP COLOUR SECTION BEHIND THE SILVER SCREEN

Screen Icons and Star Systems Across Cultures

Andrea Bandhauer and Michelle Royer (Eds) Deflecting the attention from Hollywood, Stars in World Cinema fills an important gap in the field of cinema by bringing together Star Studies and World Cinema. A team of international scholars bring their expertise and in-depth knowledge of world cultures and cinema to the study of stars and stardom from six continents. Essays look at the role of acting, music, singing, painting and martial art in the making of stars from Indigenous Australia, Austria, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Japan, North and South Korea, Nigeria, the Philippines, the former Soviet Union, Spain, North and South America. This book opens new and exciting perspectives on the mobility of stars and the cultural and socio-political contexts that led to their fame. Glauber Rocha

NEW

On Cinema brings together for the first time a comprehensive selection of Rocha’s film writings in English, revealing for the first time to English-speaking readers the full critical power, inventiveness and vision of this great filmmaker. Glauber Rocha’s writings, endowed with critical verve and humour, give insights into key moments of film history, as well as the politics of world cinema. He fearlessly confronts the film establishment and debates with a host of sacred filmmakers of the world pantheon. Included is Rocha’s early criticism of Brazilian films, landmark manifestos, writings about the development of Cinema Novo and pieces on Charles Chaplin, Orson Welles, James Dean, Stanley Kubrick, John Ford, Jean-Luc Godard, Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti and Roberto Rossellini. The publication of On Cinema edited by film scholar Ismail Xavier and translated by Stepanie Dennison, Charlotte Smith and Cecília Mello, is an international publishing event. Ben McCann, University of Adelaide Le Jour se lève (1939), directed by Marcel Carné, is widely recognized as the classic French Poetic Realist film. Told in flashback, it recounts the story of a man who has committed a murder, and who awaits his fate as the police close in. Carné shuttles between different registers, tones and textures throughout and directs the great French star Jean Gabin in his most iconic performance as François, marooned at the top of his apartment building. Ben McCann’s perceptive and lively book traces the evolution of Le Jour se lève and situates it in a very specific historical moment. He also underlines the importance of actors Jules Berry and Arletty, production designer Alexandre Trauner, writer Jacques Prévert and cinematographer Curt Courant in establishing the film’s tone, mood and visual style. Critical Approaches to a Cinematic Phenomenon Wickham Clayton and Sarah Harman (Eds)

Killing as punishment in the USA, whether ordained by lynch mob or the courts, reflects a paradox of the American nation: liberal, pluralistic, yet prone to lethal violence. This book examines the encounter between the legal history of the death penalty in America and its cinematic representations, through a comprehensive narrative and historical view of films dealing with this genre. 288 PAGES 234 X 156MM APRIL 2014 9781780763330 HARDBACK £62.00 CINEMA AND SOCIETY

The Twilight Saga, a series of five films adapted from Stephanie Meyer’s four novels, has been a sensation, both at the box office and through the attention it has won from its predominantly teenaged fans. As popular cinema, the series has had its share of criticism, even from fans. However, it also offers rich opportunities for critical attention, which the contributors to Screening Twilight provide with energy and style. The book unpacks how this popular group of films work as cinematic texts, what they have to say about cinema and culture today and how fans may seek to re-read or subvert these messages. From Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Marvel’s The Avengers David Lavery

Tom Cruise is one of the major stars – perhaps the major star – of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, both in terms of box office power and cultural significance. Tom Cruise: Performing Masculinity in Post-Vietnam Hollywood provides an analysis of his star image, as means of investigating Cruise’s enduring popularity. Employing a psychoanalytic framework, the book examines his screen persona’s function in ‘working through’ the psychological preoccupations that are presented in his various films. 272 PAGES 234 X 156MM SEPTEMBER 2014 9781784530525 HARDBACK £59.50 30 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF THE MOVING IMAGE

DORIS DAY CONFIDENTIAL

What is the state of American indie cinema in the second decade of the twenty-first century? Some have forecast an end to the viability of an indie sector marked by the appearance of films with ambitions significantly beyond those of the commercial mainstream. But, as this book demonstrates, plenty of distinctively indie productions continue to thrive, even in the face of difficult economic circumstances. 288 PAGES 234 X 156MM AVAILABLE 9781848853164 HARDBACK £58.00 9781848853171 PAPERBACK £16.99 30 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS

AESTHETICS AND NEOROMANTICISM IN FILM NEW Landscapes in Contemporary British Cinema Stella Hockenhull, Wolverhampton University

From the 1920s to the Present Mark Glancy, Queen Mary, University of London For 100 years, Hollywood has provided both the majority and the most popular of films shown on British screens. For many Britons, Hollywood films are not foreign films. Whether seen in the cinema, on television or the internet, they are regarded as normal screen fare and a part of everyday life. Hollywood and the Americanization of Britain is the first book to take a wide ranging view of this phenomenon, exploring the tastes and preferences of British audiences. 352 PAGES 234 X 156MM OCTOBER 2013 9781848854079 HARDBACK £62.00 24 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS CINEMA AND SOCIETY e ebook available

This book argues that among the diverse sources used by Soviet filmmakers in fashioning the New Soviet Person on the screen were popular American films and adventure fiction, along with the trope ‘Russian Americans’ used in the Soviet press of the 1920s to describe the new type of efficient worker. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 2014 9781784530105 HARDBACK £58.00 20 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS e ebook available

Historian Joshua First explores the politics and aesthetics of Ukrainian Poetic Cinema during the Soviet 1960s–70s. He argues that filmmakers working at the Alexander Dovzhenko Feature Film Studio in Kyiv were obsessed with questions of identity and demanded that the Soviet film industry and audiences alike recognize Ukrainian cultural difference.

James Chapman

What makes British television crime drama so perennially popular, both in the UK and internationally? What are the attractions and pleasures of these shows? How are detectives positioned in relation to viewers’ national and collective experience of the ‘everyday’? This book addresses these questions, examining the trends evident in a range of series. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 2014 9781780762944 HARDBACK £58.00 9781780762951 PAPERBACK £16.99

The first decade of the twentyfirst century has seen profound changes in the institutional, cultural and aesthetic contexts of television drama in Britain. A combination of high-end production values, new shooting technologies and stylistic innovation has invested genres such as the crime series and period drama with a new cultural energy. James Chapman argues that recent drama series such as Spooks, Hustle, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes, Sherlock, Downton Abbey and Broadchurch represent a British equivalent to ‘high concept’ imported US dramas. These series have bucked the trend of declining audiences, while winning critical plaudits for their fresh take on familiar genres. Television: Contemporary TV Series Editor: Stacey Abbott The Investigating Cult TV series has been going strong since 2007, offering a fresh forum for discussion and debate about the changing nature of cult television. The books in the series reconsider cult television and its intricate and evolving networks of fandom, while also rethinking how cult TV is conceived, produced, programmed and consumed. The aim of the series is to provide an accessible path, for scholars, student and fans alike, through the particulars and pleasures of cult television. New titles consider the themes and debates that underpin classic, contemporary and future cult television from around the world, offering new approaches to our understanding of cult.

An Introduction Janet K. Halfyard

From early examples such as Star Trek and Sapphire and Steel to more contemporary shows including Life on Mars and The Vampire Diaries, time has frequently been used as a device to allow programme makers to experiment stylistically and challenge established ways of thinking. Time on Television offers readers a range of exciting, accessible, yet intellectually rigorous essays that consider the many and varied ways in which telefantasy shows have explored this subject. 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM AUGUST 2014 9781784530136 HARDBACK £58.00 INVESTIGATING CULT TV SERIES

While television studies have developed enormously in the last ten years, one important element of television shows is regularly ignored: the musical score. This book is an accessible guide to the work music does within a television narrative, focusing on musical innovations in cult TV that are often an element of a show becoming cult – the use of musical themes, intertexuality, orchestration, and fantastic musical interventions. 224 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2014 9781784530280 HARDBACK £56.00 9781784530297 PAPERBACK £16.99

Being Gorgeous explores the ways in which extravagance, flamboyance and dressing up can open up possibilities for women to play anarchically with familiar stereotypical tropes of femininity. It can no longer be said that we are just what we eat. In the contested sphere of gastronomy divided between the golden arches of McDonalds and the prized stars of Michelin where personal identity is expressed through a frenetic quest for socially approved tastes and distinctions, where, when, how and with whom we eat has become just as fundamental in defining who we are. In this follow-on to her classic 1989 work Dining Out, Joanne Finkelstein takes a fragment of social life, dining out in restaurants, and uses it to examine the nature and meaning of manners and social relations in the modern world. Exploring Postfeminism

Slapstick, Spectacle and Subversion in Victorian England Jeffrey Richards, Lancaster University

Rebecca Munford, Cardiff University and Melanie Waters, Northumbria University

Queen Victoria and her family loved the pantomime, so did her subjects of all classes. The English pantomime is one of the most popular, least analysed of all theatrical forms. It’s been the festive mainstay of the English stage since the eighteenth century, and it has survived by its ability to evolve. This continual evolution is traced by Jeffrey Richards in the first history of panto through its ‘Golden Age’ in Victorian England. 336 PAGES 228 X 155MM SEPTEMBER 2014 9781780762937 HARDBACK £25.00 16 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS

Popular Culture From Mad Men to gaming culture, performance art to steam-punk fashion, the presentation and representation of gender continues to saturate popular media. This new series seeks to explore the intersection of gender and popular culture engaging with a variety of texts – drawn primarily from art, fashion TV, cinema, cultural studies and media studies – as a way of considering various models for understanding the complementary relationship between ‘gender identities’ and ‘popular culture’. By considering race, ethnicity, class, and sexual identities across a range of cultural forms, each book in the series will adopt a critical stance towards issues surrounding the development of gender identities and popular and mass cultural ‘products’. Gender, Politics and Family Values in Contemporary Popular Culture Louise Fitzgerald, Brighton University

Claire Nally, Northumbria University and Angela Smith, University of Sunderland

Louise Fitzgerald offers a compelling critical account of the cultural investment in and celebration of mainstream cinema’s single mother figure and her children. Femininity and Celebrity in Tween Popular Culture Melanie Kennedy The last decade has seen a dramatic increase in media output aimed at pre-adolescent girls – and the expansion, more broadly, of ‘tween’ popular culture. However, the ‘tween’ phenomenon has attracted little academic attention – until the arrival of this book. Tweenhood offers an essential, timely examination of mainstream pre-adolescent girls’ films, television programmes, celebrities and extra-texts from 2004 onwards, including: ‘princess’ narratives; The Prince & Me; A Cinderella Story; and Disney Channel programming and films Hannah Montana and Camp Rock. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2014 9781780768427 HARDBACK £58.00 10 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS LIBRARY OF GENDER AND POPULAR CULTURE

Journalism, Influence and Democracy John Lloyd and Fernando Giugliano

Journalism, Influence and Democracy John Lloyd and Haiyan Wang

The huge control Silvio Berlusconi exercised over the media when Italian Prime Minister – six of the seven terrestrial TV channels were under his influence – and the continuing influence he exerted when in opposition is unprecedented in a democratic state. This book shows how Berlusconi came to effectively control the Italian media and how his media influence in turn enabled him to gain – and crucially to maintain – political power. 288 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2014 9781780765839 HARDBACK £62.00

THE ETHICS OF JOURNALISM

NEW

Individual, Institutional and Cultural Influence Wendy Wyatt, University of St Thomas, Minnesota (Ed.) The landscape in which journalists now work is substantially different to that of the twentieth century. The rise of digital and social media necessitates a new way of considering the ethical questions facing practicing journalists. This volume considers the various individual, cultural and institutional influences that have an impact on journalistic ethics today.
