America’sPastime

Thrives in Goodyear

Each year, Goodyear comes alive with the sights and sounds of baseball, as Major League teams return for spring training at local stadiums. The history of bats and balls in our city reflects the transformation of Goodyear, as well as the deep connection between the community and the game.

Goodyear’s spring training story begins as recently as 2009, before which, the Phoenix area was well-known for hosting preseason games. However, when the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Indians (now the Guardians) chose Goodyear for their spring training home base, everything changed. The teams were, of course, attracted to the city’s mild climate during the early months of the year and its proximity to Phoenix. Its growth in infrastructure and thriving community have also been soughtafter traits in a spring training destination.

Building the Future

To prepare for the new teams’ arrival, the Goodyear Ballpark was constructed and opened in 2009. Designed to benefit both players and fans, it offered amenities for all ages and a charming classic ballpark atmosphere. Spectators love the immersive experience of being part of the game up close in an exciting environment that celebrates America’s Pastime in charming and memorable ways. It has been named by USA Today’s 10 BEST reader’s choice as the best place to watch a spring training game in Arizona.

Hosting two teams has created a rare atmosphere that fosters genuine camaraderie and friendly competition. It offers the fans a wider range of players and baseball styles, and creates a sense of good-natured rivalry that brings positive, playful energy to the stands. Each team has a year-round presence here, through spring training, extended spring training, Arizona (rookie) League, Fall Instructional League and the rehabilitation of injured players.

Good For All

Becoming a hub for spring training has brought many economic benefits to Goodyear as well. Each year, local restaurants and hotels, sports stores and retail shops are flooded with business from fans from all over the country. Jobs are created and tourism is boosted through the millions of dollars that are brought in every spring.

GOODYEAR BALLPARK

Love From the Locals

Perhaps the most delightful effect is the deep connection that has been fostered between the city and the sport. As the spring season commences, many local residents gather to celebrate a pastime that has helped to put Goodyear on the map. Through clinics, community outreach programs and charity events, the Reds and Guardians have created strong bonds with all ages, fostering a warm personal atmosphere between players and fans.

Goodyear is committed to creating a thriving atmosphere for baseball fans for years to come. With continual investments in Goodyear Ballpark and other events, our city has secured its status as a much loved spring training destination.

Goodyear’s Transformation: A History of Our Thriving Community

Ever wondered how Goodyear came to be the thriving community it is today? Ranked by 24/7 Wall St. as one of America’s Top 10 Best Cities to live, Goodyear has evolved from a small farming settlement into one of the fastest growing cities in the country.

Originally inhabited by Native Americans, including the Hohokam, Goodyear was established in 1917 when 16,000 acres of land were purchased by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company to cultivate cotton. With the national rubber shortage during World War I, the company witnessed the rising demand of cotton as a raw material in the production of tires, so it strategically set up a plantation to produce it. The area became known as “Goodyear Farms,” and was mainly a home for the cotton farmers.

Growing and Evolving

The settlement quickly grew as more land workers arrived, and in 1946, the town was officially incorporated and given the name “Goodyear.” At that time, there were 151 homes, 250 apartments, a barber shop, beauty shop, grocery store, drug store and service station. .

Throughout the mid-1900s, the city remained primarily agricultural, with alfalfa, cotton and other crops making up much of the local economy. But as time passed, people became more interested in moving to Goodyear due to its close proximity to Phoenix.

What had been a quiet farming community was transforming as people chose to live in a beautiful rural area with convenient access to the city.

Challenges and Changes

Goodyear hasn’t been without its challenges though. In 1951, the city was hit by three floods, from which the city fully recovered. Thankfully, the area is not known for its natural disasters–another feature that draws people to live here.

Many changes came in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, including the construction of Interstate 10. This attracted more businesses and brought new people to the area, with new neighborhoods being created to house more residents. By the late 80s, Goodyear had evolved from a sleepy rural town into a flourishing suburban community. It was officially incorporated in 1986, and became a true city with its own services and government.

What Lies Ahead

Today, the city is thriving with a diverse population, from young professionals to families to retirees. Industries like healthcare, logistics, retail and manufacturing help to make up the backbone of the economy, and new opportunities are being explored every day.

As Goodyear continues to expand, the city is committed to sustainable development that maintains a high quality of life for everyone. Master plans include supporting local businesses, enhancing public services, and expanding infrastructure. There’s also a commitment to preserve the city’s original rural character and rich history, passing all its best qualities down to future generations. Goodyear residents can count on the fact that the best for this city is yet to come.

Above it All

Take a Breathtaking Hot Air Balloon Ride

Looking for an experience that combines the adventure of flight with the beauty of desert landscapes? A local hot air balloon ride may be just for you! Imagine floating peacefully above the earth, surrounded by soft breezes and breathtaking views–rugged mountains, far-reaching plains, and the local wildlife that inhabits them. There are many opportunities nearby to schedule one of these sky-high journeys, year-round.

The Thrill of Flight

You may begin in the early hours of morning, or just before sunset—those times when the air is clearer and the wind is calmer. Enjoy a sense of anticipation as the burners heat up and the balloon slowly fills, preparing to carry you up and away. Taking off is a feeling like no other—a sense of weightlessness as you glide up into the sky. Soaring above city life’s busyness, you get a sense of unmatched

tranquility and oneness with the nature that surrounds you.

Flights generally last from 45 minutes to an hour, and balloons reach anywhere from 500 and 2,000 feet above the ground. While you’ll be travelling at speeds of five or six miles per hour, there’s little feeling of motion because you’re flying with the wind. Once you touch down, you’ll likely be invited to enjoy a traditional celebration—a special toast to commemorate the trip along with a keepsake certificate to take home.

How, When and Where?

We recommend booking a ride in one of the cooler months— between October and April—when winds are most favorable and temperatures are mild. Pricing may vary, depending on time of day and whether you book a private or shared flight. Here are a few nearby ballooning companies to consider:

Hot Air Expeditions – hotairexpeditions.com – 1-800-831-7610

Rainbow Ryders – rainbowryders.com – 1-800-725-2477

Apex Balloons – phoenixballoonrides.com – 1-877-946-8247

Tour packages generally include a pre-flight lesson, the balloon ride, and post-ride celebration to commemorate the trip. Children under 18 may require a parent to fly with them; expectant mothers and people in poor health may not be able to take the trip. Baskets can accommodate anywhere from two to fourteen people. Comfortable, casual, seasonal clothing is recommended as the temperature will be similar to that on the ground. Plan to allow 3-4 hours for the whole experience. If flights are cancelled due to weather, they can usually be rescheduled or a refund provided.

Whether you’re seeking a new adventure, honoring a special occasion, or looking for a unique way to explore the Sonoran desert, a hot air balloon ride is an experience you won’t soon forget!

The Phoenix Open: A Vibrant,

Fan-Friendly

Experience

Every spring, as the desert blooms and the warm air returns, a must-see event happens in Scottsdale: the Waste Management Phoenix Open. It’s a fantastic mix of entertainment, community, and the celebration of golf at its finest. Fans from everywhere (sometimes, over 700,000 of them!) converge for a fun-filled, energetic and exciting week. It’s been called the largest-attended golf tournament in the world.

The Phoenix Open is more fan-friendly, relaxed and accessible than many others on the PGA tour. With a range of ticket options, everyone from casual fans to die-hards, from corporate groups to families can find their place here. The course offers plenty of opportunities for spectators to come close to the players, making the experience even more personal and memorable.

A Hole Like No Other

The tournament’s 16th hole is iconic, and exemplifies the vibe of the event. Over 17,000 spectators gather in grandstands that surround the par 3 hole. With each tee-off, the crown explodes

with cheers of all kinds, creating a cacophonous environment that adds a welcome challenge for golfers, and fun for fans.

Known as the “Coliseum,” this hole is lined with spectators donning noise makers and signs, helping to create a unique environment where professionals who are used to playing on hushed courses must be at the top of their game, navigating everything from jeers to cheers as they attempt one of golf’s most challenging experiences.

All-Around Fun

And this event is about much more than golf–it offers unique experiences for a variety of interests. The tournament grounds are full of entertainment–food trucks, live music, and lots of activities for all ages. For those looking for an upscale experience, trendy restaurants and hospitality suites abound. Being a vibrant part of Scottsdale’s social scene, the event offers VIP gatherings, after-parties, and other who’s-who events throughout the week.

Sharing the Love

There’s also a strong commitment to community improvement and sustainability involved. Thunderbirds Charities (named after a group of leaders that organizes the tournament) is a non-profit organization formed to distribute funds raised during the event to benefit education, youth, and community development. To date, they have raised over $208 million for Arizona charities. And Waste Management (the tournament’s sponsor), with its eco-friendly impact, has helped it to become known as one of the “greenest” sporting events in the country.

What’s not to love about this one-of-a-kind experience? If you’re interested in learning more or coming to see for yourself, here’s a place to start: https://wmphoenixopen.com
