BOOK NOW! PAUL SUNDERLAND BOARDING SCHOOL SYNDROME, ADDICTIONS AND RECOVERY THE DISGUISED TRAUMA OF PRIVILEGE For the child, the moment of leaving home for boarding school is the beginning of an episode of adaption. Theirs is a new world suddenly deprived of the familiar comforts of family and privacy. For many, it becomes a place of disassociation, self-soothing and powerlessness with a necessity to manage feelings alone and in secrecy. This presentation seeks to stimulate thought about this group’s particular difficulties and to offer ideas for the treatment of this complex trauma. Learning objectives: 1. Provide new knowledge about a particular complex trauma (Boarding School Syndrome). 2. Highlight the interaction of trauma with addictive behaviour. 3. Suggests treatment interventions to enhance performance.

PRESENTERS AT iCAAD LONDON 2020 BOOK DR NICK HAYES NOW! THE FUTURE SCIENCE OF EFFECTIVE SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER TREATMENT The effective treatment of Substance Use Disorders faces many great challenges. Our most pressing concern is unquestionably measurement. Fortunately, advances in both emerging technology accelerants and data science techniques has offered our field a unique opportunity to quell these limitations. This presentation outlines a comprehensive model of measurement including psychometrics, digital phenotyping, and neuroimaging. These emerging sciences can transform our field by increasing our capacity to identify severity profiles, optimize treatment dosage, and monitor patient change over-time. Applied examples used at Cumberland Heights Foundation will be reviewed, emphasising barriers and challenges associated with the adoption of these techniques. Learning Objectives: 1. Examine the historical context of behavioural health theory. 2. Identify emerging challenges facing behavioural health treatment practices. 3. Examine how new applications of old data science techniques and technology accelerants can transform our field. 4. Present brief overview of these techniques applied within the Cumberland Heights systems of care. 5. Provide three action-oriented steps for each audience member to consider within their own practice. DR NICK HAYES Dr Hayes is Chief Science Officer at Cumberland Heights. He oversees research and technology related initiatives systemwide. Nick and his teams work on projects that leverage technology applications to improve patient outcomes. His research is focused on investigations examining efficacious treatment protocols, predictive analytics, digital phenotyping, measurementbased practices, and overall substantive effects that behavioral health interventions have on SUD outcomes. His Ph.D. is in Couple, Marriage, and Family Therapy. Nick also has advanced training in quantitative methods, intensive longitudinal monitoring techniques, and systems theory. He holds a faculty position as Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Lipscomb University.

PRESENTERS AT iCAAD LONDON 2020 BOOK NOW! MARK DRAX FROM SICKNESS TO HEALTH; THE VOW OF INTIMACY FROM WITHIN OURSELVES We arrive from the womb a fresh sponge, absorbing everything that surrounds us in the bucket we call ‘life’. Whatever we are exposed to fills the absorbent void within us and becomes our learning. If that learning is muddied with erratic attention, unhealthy attachment, frightening behaviours or worse, children learn to fear the world and seek to fill their perception of reality with anything from outside themselves that satiates this inner fear and pain. The perfect setup for addiction; external physical and emotional ‘medicine’ becomes their norm and so often, intensity becomes their intimacy. Game over? No: game just beginning. Learning Objectives: 1. To explore the Mother/Son relationship and how conflicting behaviours can predispose a child to a confusing emotional intensity in manhood. 2. To explore anger and rage when carried within a boy and how this inner sickness can affect his adult relationships with himself and others. 3. To examine the void within us, the path back to our soul and the importance of nurturing a healthy connection to ourselves from a place of ‘into-me-see’ intimacy. MARK DRAX Mark is an Addiction Recovery Coach, trained in England and America and based near London. He turned his experiences with trauma and addiction into a coaching practice specifically aimed at helping hurting men to identify and break dysfunctional patterns of sexual and abusive behaviours and to apply addiction recovery tools in a realistically sustainable manner. He works with individuals and presents workshops on subjects like shame, anger, honesty & vulnerability. His goal is always to help clients stop abusing themselves and others; to replace addictive secrecy with healthy, nurturing pursuits; and to rediscover and reclaim their true and original ‘self’.

PRESENTERS AT iCAAD LONDON 2020 JOHN LIEBERMAN BOOK FAMILY FAMILY FAMILY INTEGRATING COMPREHENSIVE NOW! FAMILY TREATMENT, EDUCATION AND INTERVENTION IN THE TREATMENT PROCESS It’s all about family. Some people say, “If you want to remember something, say it three times.” Integrating families into the treatment process is complicated, uncomfortable and can sometimes seem impossible. Yet the family has the greatest impact, positive or negative, toward the treatment of individuals suffering with substance abuse and mental health issues. Families suffer right along with the identified individual. Most times the individual who is acting out is simply the “squeaky wheel,” the one who needs the most immediate attention. We will discuss the importance of family therapy through out the treatment process. We know individuals do better in all forms of therapy when family is involved, this includes addiction, mental health and medical treatment. Integrating family in the treatment process is paramount to achieving successful outcomes for adolescents and young adults struggling with emotional, psychological, and addiction issues. Because supportive family dynamics provide the greatest positive influence on adolescents in recovery, treatment professionals would better serve clients by incorporating the family in all stages of treatment. Learning Objectives: 1. Why adolescents and young adults do better with including family in the treatment process more than the adult population. 2. The necessity for therapist to view the family as a resource rather than an obstacle in treatment. 3. How to teach parents the tools to help their loved one manage recovery both during and after treatment. JOHN LIEBERMAN John has committed his life to helping adolescents and young adults and their families find lasting recovery from the damages of addiction and co-occurring disorders. John holds a Master Degree in Psychology and is currently the Director for Visions Adolescent Treatment Centers. During his 34 years in the Treatment Industry, John has lead groups, been a featured speaker at national conferences, appeared in magazine articles and has been on numerous TV segments as an industry authority and champion of addiction recovery.

PRESENTERS AT iCAAD LONDON 2020 CHIP SOMERS AND JUDITH LANDAU BOOK CREATING SUSTAINABLE CHANGE THROUGH PEER RECOVERY NOW! AND COMMUNITY INFLUENCERS Every community has its own natural change agents. Peer Recovery Specialists focus on individuals while Community Influencers focus on systemwide change. How can we mobilize these two groups as a bridge between professionals and community to increase the impact of the limited capacity of healthcare providers to deal with the challenges of current epidemics? PRESENTERS AT iCAAD LONDON 2020 NICK BARTON BOOK HOPIUM © - ANAESTHETIC, PAIN PRESERVER, RATHER NOW! THAN PAIN KILLER In the era of widespread interest in trauma, its aetiology and treatment, this presentation will re-consider the theories of Arthur Janov, focussing particularly on the powerfully addictive drug (hopium) that is produced by and sustains the futile struggle to get that we can never have while perpetuating denial of that painful reality. It will aim to illuminate the connection between traumatic responses to developmental needs. It will consider possible therapeutic interventions in this context. Especially since the publication of the study into Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE), interest in the lasting impact of earlylife trauma on mental and physical health has grown and keeps growing. While drawing the connection between primal need, trauma and primal pain as explained by Janov, the presentation will explore how a neurotic system develops to ensure the pain remains out of consciousness but in so doing preserves it and allows it to determine much of the approach (often counterproductive) to life. It argues that addiction develops through use of external reinforcements to suppress conscious experience of the pain. Addiction to Hopium is explained as central to the futile neurotic struggle to get what was once needed but can never be obtained as a way of avoiding conscious experience of primal pain. Therapeutic approaches to withdrawing from hopium and addressing the pain and its effects will be explored. Learning objectives: 1. Gain an understanding of Arthur Janov’s hypothesis of primal needs and pain as they relate to the development of a person’s self-defeating (neurotic) approach to life, including the development of addiction. 2. Acquire insight into how primal pain is kept out of consciousness including through addiction to Hopium, which not only postpones healing but also compounds suffering. 3. As a contribution to the development of practice, benefit from an exploration of ways to help people resolve unconscious pain and its effects. NICK BARTON Qualified as a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist in the US, Nick Barton ran the treatment centre Clouds House before heading up and expanding the charity Clouds. From 2007-15 he was chief executive of Action on Addiction. He has written many articles, spoken at conferences and contributed chapters to books. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Health by the University of Bath for services to addiction treatment. He has been a trustee of several charities, including Nelson Trust, EATA, SMMGP and Safe Lives, the domestic abuse charity. He is a trustee of the Mackie Foundation and Music Support. iCAAD London 2020

PRESENTERS AT iCAAD LONDON 2020 PROFESSOR JOANNE NEALE BOOK DEVELOPMENT OF SURE RECOVERY: AN APP TO HELP NOW! PEOPLE WHO USE SUBSTANCES SELF-MONITOR AND TRACK THEIR RECOVERY Recovery is a widely used outcome within substance use treatment. In 2016, we published a validated measure of recovery called the Substance Use Recovery Evaluator (SURE). SURE was co-produced with people using substances and attracted international interest. Users of SURE soon reported that they wanted to access the measure in an app so they could self-monitor their own recovery and achieve personal goals. The aim of our next project was therefore to develop such an app. In 2018/19, we employed a user-centred design process to identify content for, co-design, and build the app. This involved over 40 people with lived experience of addiction working collaboratively with qualitative researchers, statisticians, clinicians, and digital designers. The app (SURE Recovery) was published on the App Store and Google Play in October 2019. It comprises of: 1. a recovery tracker, providing SURE scores with personalised feedback; 2. a sleep tracker, enabling people to assess their own sleep; 3. an artwork feature, allowing people to share their creations with the recovery community; 4. a diary feature, offering a safe space to record thoughts and feelings; 5. information on the life-saving drug naloxone; and vi. free access to a book on recovery. The app also gives people opportunities to participate in further research. Learning Objectives: 1. To understand what is meant by collaborative research. 2. To understand what is meant by a Patient Reported Outcome Measure (or PROM). 3. To understand how the Substance Use Recovery Evaluator can be used. PROFESSOR JOANNE NEALE Joanne Neale is Professor of Addictions Qualitative Research at the National Addiction Centre, King’s College London. She is also Conjunct Professor in the Centre for Social Research in Health at the University of New South Wales, Australia. Jo is a social scientist and social worker and has undertaken a wide range of qualitative and quantitative studies exploring topics relating to both homelessness and addiction. She is currently the Senior Qualitative Editor and Commissioning Editor for the international journal Addiction.

PRESENTERS AT iCAAD LONDON 2020 BOOK NOW!
DR ANJULA MUTANDA IS THERE SUCH A THING AS ANGER ADDICTION? Through a very personal case study, this presentation will explore the counterintuitive joy of rage. It will examine anger as a by-product of dysfunctional attachment and as a trauma response. We will discuss early behavioural issues that act as red flags for an anger addiction. It will also explore anger as a more global social pandemic. We will see how anger is spreading across mediums such as social media and investigate the psychological impact fear-inducing headlines can have on us. We will also learn how the media manipulates our anger and how, in this age of increasing ego-vulnerability, we perceive threats everywhere - some which are real, and others which are made up. Anger then becomes the shield with which we protect and arm ourselves. Learning Objectives: 1. Delegates will learn strategies and skills for managing anger. 2. Attendees will learn where we can implement personal strategies, globally. 3. Attendees will gain a better understanding of media manipulation and how to distinguish between the truth and the lies. DR ANJULA MUTANDA Anjula is a highly respected relationship psychologist, mental health expert, presenter, author, social scientist, and media consultant with an increasingly international profile. Anjula is the Behavioural expert on season 2 of Make or Break (My5 and channel 5 April 2019). Filmed on a beautiful Caribbean Island, this exciting 10 part series sees 8 couples put through a wide range of relationships challenges. Through a series of expert-led exercises, the couples are faced with an ultimate decision - will they Make or Break? Anjula has also filmed a major new groundbreaking relationship series for channel 4- due to air in 2019. Having contributed to a successful season 2, Anjula continues as the resident Behavioural expert on Fights Camera Action season 3 for 5Spike. An eye-opening series that looks at angry behaviour across the globe. Anjula explores and explains the motivations behind often outrageous outbursts that some people display when angry.

PRESENTERS AT iCAAD LONDON 2020 BOOK
DR TIAN DAYTON NOW! FROZEN MOMENTS AN EXPERIENTIAL APPROACH TO TREATING RELATIONAL TRAUMA Flight and fight are the well-known actions that we humans, animals and reptiles take when we’re scared or terrified. However, when we can do neither because we’re trapped, immobilised or simply have nowhere to go as is often the case with children, we may freeze or dissociate. These “frozen moments” however do not necessarily disappear, they can live within the mind/body as disowned parts of self that continue to have impact on how we live on our relationships. In psychodrama, we can concretise these moments through role play, we can talk to them, enter into them and bring the feelings associated with them from the inside to the outside. We can see, feel and heal them in a supportive, therapeutic context. In this experiential workshop we’ll do a “frozen moment” social atom, and a sculpture of a frozen moment. This is a contained way in which we can take a step back and see the picture more fully in working with relational trauma. Learning Objectives: 1. Gain a picture of a moment in which one may have felt traumatised and dissociated or frozen. 2. Allow the protagonist to ascertain their own “frozen moment” rather than having to meet it in the course of role play and risk feeling blindsided by their own frozenness. 3. Create a safe, experiential structure through which to work with relational trauma. 4. Gain access to parts of the self that one may have thrown out of consciousness. 5. Gain a clearer sense of the internalised family system that a protagonist may be operating from in their lives. DR TIAN DAYTON Dr Dayton is a senior fellow at The Meadows and Director of The New York Psychodrama Training Institute, author of fifteen books including, Neuropsychodrama in the Treatment of Relational Trauma, The ACoA Trauma Syndrome: How Childhood Trauma Impacts Adult Relationships, Emotional Sobriety: From Relationship Trauma to Resilience and Balance, Trauma and Addiction: Ending the Cycle of Pain Through Emotional Literacy, Heartwounds: The Impact of Unresolved Trauma and Grief on Relationships, , The Living Stage: A Step by Step Guide to Psychodrama and Experiential Therapy, The Magic of Forgiveness… She is a Huffington Post blogger and creator of innerlook.com.

DR JON CALDWELL HEALING WOUNDS FROM THE PAST BY MINDFULLY AND COMPASSIONATELY EMBRACING THE PRESENT Adverse experiences in childhood can lead to patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that may have helped us to survive the past, but keep us from experiencing the fullness of life in the present. These unhealthy patterns of “reactivity” can keep us stuck in a painful past and a fearful future. This presentation will rely on fascinating neuroscience research and useful clinical tools to explore how mindfulness and self-compassion can reduce reactivity and promote greater connection with true self and others. Join me as we explore ways to heal the “hole in the soul” by reconnecting to presentmoment wholeness. This presentation will utilise cutting-edge research, highly engaging visual information, and real-world clinical anecdotes to explore the scientific linkages between trauma, attachment, and addiction, and will offer ideas on how to help clients restore the capacity to self-regulate in healthy ways. Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be able to identify general principles of attachment theory. 2. Participants will be able to describe how attachment theory can be used to better conceptualise childhood maltreatment. 3. Participants will be able to describe the qualities of the two main dimensions of attachment insecurity: anxiety and avoidance. DR JON CALDWELL Dr Jon G. Caldwell, DO, PhD, is a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of adults who have experienced relational trauma and addictive behaviors. He is Chief Medical Officer at Meadows Behavioral Health, providing oversight for inpatient and outpatient programs in three states in the US. DR JASLEEN CHHATWAL GOING DEEPER INTO DEPRESSION: ADDRESSING BRAIN, BODY AND BEHAVIOUR In this presentation, we will discuss the different pathophysiological processes underlying depression. We will review current evidence for approaching patients with difficult to treat symptoms using conventional and complementary medicine modalities. In addition, we will discuss the latest developments in conceptualizing treatment resistance and novel, experimental treatments that are under investigation. Depression, often considered a monolithic clinical diagnosis, is seen to have varying clinical presentations. These polymorphic symptoms make the clinicians job of identifying, diagnosing, and treating inherently challenging. Compounding this problem, approximately a third of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) do not respond to treatment, with only half achieving remission. This treatment resistance results in high morbidity and makes MDD one of the leading causes of disability in the world per the World Health Organization. Learning Objectives: 1. Define depression and treatment resistant depression. 2. Discuss pathophysiological processes implicated in the clinical presentation of depression. 3. Describe evidence-based conventional and integrative treatments for depressive disorders. 4. Review novel and experimental approaches for difficult to treat depression. DR JASLEEN CHHATWAL Jasleen Chhatwal, MD, is Chief Medical Officer and Director of the Mood Disorders Program at Sierra Tucson, a premier residential behavioral health treatment center. A board-certified psychiatrist, Dr Chhatwal also serves as Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. She is trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy, psychopharmacology, neuromodulation including ECT & rTMS, and various emerging modalities. MIKE TRACE GLASS HALF FULL? REFLECTIONS ON 30 YEARS OF DEVELOPING NATIONAL TREATMENT SYSTEMS In this hour-long personal reflection, Mike Trace will look critically at what the substance misuse treatment sector has tried to achieve, and the extent to which it has been successful, over 3 decades of expansion. Focusing on the UK, but also contrasting experience in North America and continental Europe, he will ask the big questions of what has driven the expansion of publicly funded treatment, whose needs does it meet, and whether the sector has made good use of the historic opportunity presented by increased political interest. Mike is well placed to offer his perspective, as a worker in the sector since the early 1980’s, including senior strategic roles in the UK government, the European Union, and the United Nations. MIKE TRACE Mike, CEO, Forward Trust. Following a period of 12 years doing front line work with the homeless, drug users and prisoners, Mike held the post of Deputy UK Drug ‘Czar’ from 1997 until 2001. His duties included the creation of the UK’s first National Drug Strategy and the oversight of its initial implementation. From 2000 to 2003, he was the Chairman of the European Union drugs agency, the European Monitoring Centre on Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA). Here he steered a three-year work plan which involved the collation and dissemination of research and analysis on drug use, problems and responses across Europe. From 2001 to 2002, Mike also held the post of director of performance at the National Treatment Agency, set up by the UK government to oversee the rapid expansion of the drug treatment sector, leaving to take on the role of Chief of the Demand Reduction section for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Vienna. RUDI VOET AND VICTOR VAN ROSSUM GAME OVER Game Over will be a panel presentation; attendees will be informed by expert professionals on the developments in the treatment of compulsive behavioural patterns and which studies and outcomes are progressing the field with cutting edge diagnosis, treatment tools and services. The World Health Organisation defines gaming disorder in the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as a pattern of gaming behaviour (“digital-gaming” or “video-gaming”) characterised by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences. For gaming disorder to be diagnosed, the behaviour pattern must be of enough severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning and would normally have been evident for at least 12 months. Attendees of this presentation will hear a first-hand experience of what it is like living with gaming addiction and how it manifests itself within the family setting. For gaming disorder to be diagnosed, the behaviour pattern must be of enough severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning and would normally have been evident for at least 12 months. Ultimately people play games to satisfy their needs; creativity, competing and connection - the captivating attraction towards the fantasy of personalities and identities; explorers, destroyers, achievers and socialisers. Games like World of Warcraft and Fortnite have combinations of those four characters and maybe real hormone triggers for feelings of happiness (Serotonin and Endorphins), love (Oxytocin) and rewards (Dopamine). This high risk - high reward business with a significant influence on our hormonetriggers, is reminiscent to that of the illegal drug business.

PRESENTERS AT iCAAD LONDON 2020 DUFFLYN LAMMERS BOOK RECOVERY GAMES: HOW TO USE IMPROV AND CREATIVE WRITING IN GROUPS NOW! This presentation will offer solutions to common challenges in groups based in theatre games and improv as well as creative writing and story. She will illustrate the value of theatre games and improv to create connection, flexibility, optimism, and attunement, group cohesion, and presence. She will show through creative writing how humans create meaning with narrative and, with guidance and intention, this can be used for empowerment, vision, shame reduction, motivation, and even forgiveness. Both approaches come from a philosophy of play which in essence teaches emotional intelligence. Dufflyn proposes that containers such as these provide a way for group participants to grow in the proper direction, regardless of which direction they need to move in, allowing for variation within the group. This gives clients in group the chance to both evaluate from a thinking perspective, from the inside out, with writing, what is happening for them. Together we will experience how play is actually a valuable tool to inspire change and new directions of thought. By experiencing the exercises themselves participants will gain a clearer understanding of how they might incorporate improv, theatre games, story and creative writing into their group sessions. Learning Objectives: 1. To experience how improvisation can be used as a means of creating valuable skills for recovery and mental health. 2. To gain an understanding of what story is and does and how this can be used as a therapeutic tool in groups through creative writing. 3. To explore how to create engaging containers that allow a group facilitator to step into a new role and avoid common problems in group. DUFFLYN LAMMERS Dufflyn Lammers, writer, actor and coach, is European Director of Services at Connections In Recovery. She specializes in Codependency and Sex and Love Addiction. PRESENTERS AT iCAAD LONDON 2020 PROFESSORJOANNA MONCRIEFF AND BOOK PROFESSOR ROSEMARY RIZQ NOW! CAN WE TALK ABOUT PRESCRIBED DRUG DEPENDENCE? Guidance for Psychological Therapists: Enabling conversations with clients taking or withdrawing from prescribed psychiatric drugs was launched in December 2019. Following Public Health England’s acknowledgment of the growing problem of prescribed drug dependency and withdrawal in its recent ground-breaking report, this new guidance gives psychological therapists the information they need to help clients struggling with side effects and withdrawal issues which have resulted from a boom in the prescription of psychiatric drugs. Learning objectives: 1. Latest evidence around what psychiatric drugs do together with the likely incidence and severity of withdrawal reactions. 2. Importance of recognising potential withdrawal reactions so they are not misinterpreted as relapse or the occurrence of a ‘new’ problem. 3. Implications of the evidence for therapeutic practice including for example distinguishing between giving medical advice (which is the province of prescribers) and discussing medical information, and understanding when usual psychotherapeutic practice might need to be suspended in favour of more supportive work. PROFESSOR JOANNA MONCRIEFF Joanna Moncrieff is Professor of Critical and Social Psychiatry at University College London, and works as a consultant psychiatrist at the North East London Foundation Trust. She has researched and written about theories of drug action, the experience of taking psychiatric drugs, decision making, the history of drug treatment and the history, politics and philosophy of psychiatry more generally. She is currently leading a UK government-funded study of antipsychotic reduction and discontinuation. She is co-chairperson of the Critical Psychiatry Network. She is author of numerous papers and several books including The Myth of the Chemical Cure. PRESENTERS AT iCAAD LONDON 2020 A CONVERSATION WITH ERVIN LASZLO CONSCIOUS COMPASSION To go deep into Erivns perspective on how we can co-exist with our environment and higher energy. A series of questions will be put to Ervin along with audience questions on his experience, his hopes and how we can connect with compassion. “A range of different types of consciousness is available to human beings. It’s a kind of anomaly that postmodern Western culture has narrowed the range of that what we are encouraged to have. Maybe it’s not so much a transformation we are speaking of, but an opening. It’s a reclaiming. “A growing body of evidence suggests that what we do affects others and what others do affects us, and yet within this matrix, individuality is not suffocated but paradoxically liberated into deeper forms of self-expression. The self that sees and consciously participates in the porosity of becoming more than the self who didn’t see it. Experientially opening to the Akashic field that surrounds us melts the boundaries of the private ego, bringing about the “death of self” spoken of so often in the spiritual literature; but as the ego dies, a new form of individuality is being birthed, not an isolated individuality but one that thrives in this deeper give and take. In the end, I think we will see that expanding the breadth of our conscious participation in the surrounding matrix of life brings forward a new depth of personal presence in history.” “I have learned that all knowledge is available to us. We don’t have to create it; we have only to access it. Simply ask in the right way—not with pride in your accomplishment, but with an open heart. I don’t even mean to ask humbly, in the sense of being self-deprecating. Don’t think about yourself at all, nor about your ability or lack of it. Concentrate, rather, on attuning yourself to Infinite Consciousness and ask for guidance in what you want to do. It’s delightful, fun, and deeply inspiring to work and let yourself be used in this way.” “At any moment, a human being can receive new energy from the wellspring of the universe. However, to receive this pristine energy, our thoughts need to connect with it. We can do this with pure prayer or with peace-loving thoughts such as “I am so grateful! Everything will definitely get better!” or “May peace prevail on Earth!”

PRESENTERS AT iCAAD LONDON 2020 DR GILL MACLEOD AND KAY FORSYTHE BOOK MANAGING YOUR WELLBEING AND MENTAL HEALTH IN AN NOW! INCREASINGLY COMPLEX WORLD Gill and Kay have worked together over the last nine years and have developed different practical approaches to many aspects of workplace mental health and well-being. Earlier this year Deloitte published an update to their 2017 research focused on mental health and employers. The report makes a positive case for employers investing in mental health, with an average return of £5 for every £1 spent. Together they will address the significant rise in mental health related ‘presenteeism’, where employees work when they are not at their most productive, with mental health related absenteeism and staff turnover contributing to the costs overall. Alongside this, changes to working practices are found to make maintaining mental health more challenging for some. For example, while increased use of technology can enhance working practices, having the ability to work outside of regular working hours can also make it hard to disconnect from an ‘always-on’ culture. This presentation will deliver, strategies and practical steps that we can all use as employers and employees, to invest in our mental health and to help protect and manage ourselves both. DR GILL MACLEOD Dr MacLeod MBChB MRCP AdvDOM Cert IoD Gill is HCA, ED of Primary Care and CEO of Roodlane Medical. She has worked in the City for the last 30 years. PRESENTERS AT iCAAD LONDON 2020 HEATHER HAYES BOOK THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK FOR WORKING WITH WOMEN: NOW! AN ESSENTIAL RESOURCE FOR WOMEN’S CASE MANAGEMENT Connection is the key and with it, expert interventionist and licensed counsellor, Heather Hayes, is able to lift the lid on women’s issues. With 35 years of working with women in the addictions and mental health field, Heather is able to offer invaluable insight for clinicians, case managers, coaches and interventionists working with women. The first mention of a ‘sex-selective disorder’ dates back to ancient Egypt. It was here that the stigma towards women and their specific issues was created. Today women are statistically more affected than men by mental health and substance abuse issues, yet rarely do we address this. Women face unique challenges regarding their physical and mental health that must be recognised and explored by mental health professionals. Such challenges include women’s exposure to violence, culturally supported roles for women in traditional settings, and mental health concerns across the life cycle. Women are unlikely to seek treatment for fear of losing their children. They are also unfulfilled by the modern day models of development which advocate individualism and independence. Women thrive through connection, therefore the way we need to help women recover needs to be through a connective model. Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will demonstrate an understanding of the history of addiction and mental health for women and ways in which if impact womens’ ability to receive access to care. 2. Participants will demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical framework in which to work with women that emphasises connection, not separation, as the guiding principle in working with women and girls. 3. Participants will be able to identify gender-responsive interventions to promote a definition of recovery that focuses not on what is eliminated or removed from a woman’s life but on what is being added to her life. HEATHER HAYES Heather is the Founder and CEO of HRH & Associates, Inc. She is a Master’s Level, Licensed Counsellor, Board Registered Interventionist (CIP) and Certified ARISE® Interventionist. Heather received her B.A. from Emory University and her M.Ed. from Antioch University in Counselling Psychology. A veteran of the behavioural health field, she has over 30 years of experience working with addictions and other disorders and specialises in the treatment of adolescents/ young adults, trauma, brain disorders, complex mental health issues and the full spectrum of addictive disorders. iCAAD London 2020

PRESENTERS AT iCAAD LONDON 2020 PROFESSOR DAVID BEST AND SUSAN BRODERICK BOOK BETTER THAN WELL: THE REALITY OF RECOVERY NOW! While the concept of recovery remains a mystery to many in the justice field, emerging research has confirmed that the long-term prognosis for SUD’s are quite favourable and the majority of those who seek help for a SUD can and do recover. (Best, 2018). In fact, people not only recover, but in many cases this growth may exceed general population levels of quality of life when they reach ‘stable’ recovery of five years or more of continuous sobriety (Hibbert & Best, 2011) – generating the idea that recovery may not be about remission to a ‘normal’ state but rather a transcendence to a state that can be characterised as ‘better than well’. This wellness ripples out into the community in the form of increased civic participation and engagement. Learning objectives: 1. Understand the ‘better than well’ theory in addiction recovery 2. Recognise how strengths-based approaches impact quality of life 3. Provide examples of the transformative power of recovery capital across individual, social, and community domains. PROFESSOR DAVID BEST University. David has led numerous recovery research projects in Australia, the UK, the US and throughout Europe. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications, seven books and more than 50 technical reports. He is First chair of Recovery Academy UK; Recovery Academy Australia; and the Scottish Drugs Recovery Consortium. He is CIA on the Australian Research Council grant on Social Networks and Recovery (SONAR) and on the REC-PATH study assessing recovery pathways in the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands. He is also principal investigator (PI) on three major previous recovery studies - in Glasgow and Birmingham, UK, and in Melbourne, Australia. SUSAN BRODERICK Former Associate Professor at McCourt School of Public Policy, Georgetown University and Former Prosecutor from Manhattan DA’s Office, Susan is an expert in the field of criminal justice and recovery. She has experience on the front lines of the justice system and has worked with the leading experts in the field of addiction and recovery. She is on the Advisory Board for Harvard’s Recovery Research Institute and was co-chair of the Georgetown University’s Task Force on Drugs and Alcohol.
