Exercise 1 Wire Door Handle

Barbed Wire “Barbed wire” twisted to create handle, creating a hazardous handle.

Spring Takes shape when a solid wood handle is inserted and used as a “key”.

Coil Double twisted wire strength, coiled to create a strong structure handle.

Twist, twist, twist Lengthy length of wire.. twisted.. and twisted.. and twisted.. creating heavy quality, sculptural handle.

Exercise 2 Push / Pull - Clay, Foam, Other

Push or Pull? Foam model using subtle signals to imply push or pull action. Depending on way it is displayed will imply push or pull actions. Push One side encourages “pushing” by using imprinted finger tips. Pull Other side contains “scores” to encourage “grabbing” action, when offset from the door surface.

Push or Pull? Foam surfaces subtly suggesting push or pull actions. Final suggested to be made from memory foam material. Push Soft, impressionable flat surface leaves handprints from previous “pusher”. Pull Offset handle, with soft impressionable surface, leaves fist prints from previous “puller”.

Push or Pull? Foam cut to create bending action. Used for both push AND pull to tease users, creating fun or frustration. Push Offset, simply bends with pushing motion from user. Pull Offset, simply bends with pulling motion from user.

Push or Pull? Clay surfaces subtly suggesting push or pull actions. Final suggested to be made from memory foam material.

Push or Pull? Offset soft impressionable door knob, leaves previous grab marks.

Coffee Flat Coffee cup - cut lengthways, invites push motion when base faces upwards. Cup fully flattens out under pressure when pushed against with palm. Provides users with a satisfying feedback to their action.

Coffee Twist Coffee cup - cut lengthways and twisted, creating door knob style, inviting twisting dynamic action.

Exercise 3 Prototyping for a Service

Service Prototyping Illustate users. Designing an experience. HUMANS rather than abstract answer. Mapping user experiences. Identifying touch points. Role playing. Creating a storyboard. User scenarios. Prototyping idea. Smoking in Doorways Make smokers aware. Smoke clouds in front area. Stay at entrance to be close to inside. Creates a focal point. Smokers excluded by floor markings.

Smoking in Doorways 1. Good possible location for smokers. 2. Through doors in to smoke clouds. 3. Smokers in front of the building. 4. Smokers following areas with sun.

Exercise 4 Preserving for the Future

Art of Memory Visual and spacial orientation, ordering and positioning images for recollecting. Architectural Mnemonic Plces words and images in allocated “rooms,” recollecting by “walking” through the building. Memory Organism’s mental ability to store, retain and recall information.

Graphical Mnemonic Use of signs and icons to enhance the recollection of memory.

Mnemonic Memory aid, artificially enhancing memory, which can be verbal, kinetic, visual, auditory.

Textural Mnemonic Images functioning like text to enhance memory. Bit like shorthand, therefore not really memory - cheating!

Everything is Illuminated “The Collector” catalogues things in “sandwich bags” and pins to walls. Collects tokens, documenting existence of corresponding family members. “During the war, Jews used to hide things in jars, and bury them”.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Two lovers can’t let go, therefore wipe their memories clean of eachother. Regretting the descision, they hide in other memories to try and combat the process, and remember.

Personal Memories... I store treasured things in a shoebox. To anyone, the contents are worthless, however for me they are priceless. The shoebox contains treasured items: small heilooms from grandparents; home made gifts; “smells - half smoked cigar and t-shirt; letters from lovers; packages; random token items.

Sensory Technologies: Arduino Programmable device, allowing you to utilize digital and analog sensors to map various received information. Digital - on / off (1/0). Analog - variable voltage (0 to 1024). Actuators - for example can include LEDs, motors, relays, etc. Serial Communication - for example can include GPS, bluetooth, Vmusic2, iPod, USB, Wii, LCD, Blink M light, etc. www.freeduino.org www.arduino.cc

Usman Haque - Haunt To give the feeling of a haunted house. Uses no sensors other than the room space around the user. Actuators - infrasound, humidity, temperature, air movement and electro-magnets.

James Auger - People Blind Dates “Rent-a-body concept, allowing users to borrow an alternative body. A contract is drawn up between the user and the rented body, regarding liability for any crimes committed.

“Was walking along here with an old girlfriend on a dead cold evening, and we shared a passionate kiss, over hearing remarks from passers-by..”

Embankment looks amazing at night...

Concept 1: “Google Walks” Users contribute their favourite walks for others to see and follow. Using GPS or tracking mobile IMEI number, shows where the user is situated, and can record / start the journey accompanied with a podcast tour for path followers. Audio can be uploaded - music for specific areas, or audio commentary of a memory, GPS / bluetooth prompted. Mood can be caught, as the walk can be made visible at only specific times. For example, my walk on the right is for winter evenings only, helping set the scenery as it was during my memory. The project can also provide historical information as well as personal.

View of the “City” - my father always mentions his “part” in building the Natwest tower...

Give it “the bowl”: The Jam: Along the Riverfront

Great relaxing spot here... basque in the glow of tblue lights... Hungry? Tas - yummy Turkish restaurant.. Feel cultured, skip along to: Yann Tiersen: Les Jeurs Tristes Great view of the “West End”

Millenium Wheel: “Remember being taken up it for my 16th birthday... it was a dark January evening, and seeing London all lit up at night was totally breathtaking..”

My grandfather’s ghastly “chav” ring!

Concept 2: Memory Box Playing on the common method of storing items in shoe boxes. User stores items individually, helping to retain hidden attributes, such as smell. User’s can record information for playback, giving personal insight into each individual item’s value. Boxes can come in different sizes, and stack up for storage. Could possibly be made of a strong plastic such as Polycarbonate, with a tranluscent finish.

Champagne cork from my 18th birthday.

Hated this job but it was a means to an end. All I have left from my car, which I had to sell.

Concept 3: Haunted House My own home has been around for approximately 80 years. Many families have lived here, yet I know nothing of any previous owners. Many new families will also reside in my home, yet they will nothing of me. I would like to change this by working on a way each family can document their stay in home, allowing future residents to learn about previous habitants. This could be done photographically, or could be more complex, resembling temperatures, smells, sounds, etc.

Walks

Requires: GPS technology Internet connection iTunes / podcast software Google Walks Software User’s can upload and map routes or tours of locations with personal or historic value with various media forms. GPS traces user’s path through city, allowing them the opportunity to follow the mapped route.

Walks

“From a very young age my parents would take me to this exact spot to feed the ducks.. I always remember seeing the ducklings in the spring time...

How to Google Walk Uploading Walks User starts the Google Walks software. GPS technology tracks their route. Images / audio from exact position. Walk is synced with music software. Finding Walks User accesses software for a route. Prompted when near possible routes. Simply choose walk to follow.

“Where I Grew Up” - Podcast Test “Cricklefield stadium, home of Ilford FC.. I used to catch the odd Saturday game with my dad.. They once played Barcalona in 1923..” “Didn’t even know we had a football team! I would try out, but I am too good!” “This was my school, South Park.. Making children’s lives miserable since 1905..” “Wow... Did any famous people come here?!?!” “This is the Ashgrove pub, where I first learnt pool.. Used to come here with my dad when I was young.. He used to bribe me with pool games so I would not tell mum..” “Can’t believe your dad dragged you to this shit hole.. At least the GP is opposite for all the drunks..”

Photographic Film Plastic sheet made of either polyester, nitrocellulose or cellulose acetate, coated with an emulsion containing light-sensitive silver halide salts, which form a latent image when exposed to light, revealed by chemical processes, applied in filmdeveloping. Magnetic Tape Electrical signal fed to the recording head, inducing a pattern of magnetization similar to the signal. A playback head can then pick up the changes in magnetic field from the tape and convert it into an electrical signal.

How it works Recording Images Walls are coated in silver halides with an extremely SLOW speed, recording stationary objects clear, and movement as a blur over a period of time. Recording Sound Magnetic tape is fed into the walls, recording occation split seconds of sound, with random playback.

Prototyping Concept Images Using an SLR film camera, set to Bulb (long exposure) in which the shutter is held down manually for desired length of time, recording movement as a blur. Sound Using garage band to record random sounds whilst I am at my desk, giving impression of magnetic tape in walls.
