Overview Research Prototype Proposed Service
Research
Study of Existing Systems - Morden system is ideal. The system allows for the greatest safety and maintenance. This system should be promoted at every station if volunteer is involved as person to top up shelf. - If not, a consistent volunteer is necessary to keep basic order over time - Service should incorporate strategy to encourage/reward sharing in order to reduce the work required by staff and volunteer.
Possible Stations for Book Share
Bookshelf Design
- Stations that are in Zone 2 / 3 with over 10,000 passengers per day - To have proper station area with employees present during day - Proper station area is a building with max of two entrances and suitable size to accommodate shelf - Would be best to only use station on one line
- Easy to use, yet eye catching, shelf - Sturdy shelf that can withstand abuse - Cannot be used as a weapon - Adaptable. Able to go inside or outside gates in station - Would be nice to include small paperbacks into design - Would function best at eye level but not necessary - Garbage resistant
Volunteering
Long Term Benefits
- Volunteers cannot be overlooked when designing the experience - Volunteer experience must be rewarding and engaging - Way for public to interact with volunteer would be good - Sense of community could reduce workload for volunteer
- Art on the Underground is proof of this kind of project - Opportunity to build positive community relationships - Could reduce incidents by creating positive environment - There is an opportunity to foster community relations - More people reading means more people supporting reading
