The essay “Elephant Tracings: A Critical Animal / Postcolonial Genealogy of the Royal Museum for Central Africa” takes a closer look at the nonhuman animal victims of colonization. S. Marek Muller uses postcolonial critical animal studies as a theoretical framework to demonstrate the simultaneously racist and speciesist colonial history of the Belgian Congo as applied to the hunting, mutilation, and display of the Congolese elephant. Muller’s analysis is based on three vignettes that represent the colonial and postcolonial treatment of the African elephant under European colonial rule. Her reading gives rise to philosophical and historical questions that have long since been asked about humans in postcolonial studies but have yet to be asked about African elephants within similar contexts.
