A Saviour Steps Forward

[John 18:1-14]


John 18:1 1

When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.


John 18:2-3 2

Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his 3 disciples. So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.


John 18:4-6 4

Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, "Whom do you seek?" 5 They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am he." Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6 When Jesus said to them, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.


John 18:7-9 7

So he asked them again, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth." 8 Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go." 9 This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.


John 18:10-11 10

Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant's name was 11 Malchus.) So Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?"


John 18:12-14 12

So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. 13 First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was 14 high priest that year. It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.


John 18:4 4

Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, "Whom do you seek?"

Mark 14:35-36 And going a little farther, Jesus fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him . . . "Yet not what I will, but what you will."


John 3:19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil.


Luke 22:53 “This is your hour, and the power of darkness.”

Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, "Whom do you seek?"

"Whom do you seek?" 5 They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am he." Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6

When Jesus said to them, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.


John 8:58-59 58

Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him.

Matthew 26:53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?


Matthew 26:52 Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword.

Psalm 75:8 For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup with foaming wine, well mixed, and he pours out from it, and all the wicked of the earth shall drain it down to the dregs.


Revelation 14:10 he also will drink the wine of God's wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur


Matthew 26:39,42 39

"My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.� 42

Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done."

So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. 13 First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people. [see 11:50]


John 11:49-50 49Â

But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know 50 nothing at all. Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish."


John 11:51-52 51Â

He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied 52 that Jesus would die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. 13 First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.


Acts 2:24 God raised him up, loosing the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
