The Italian Cultural Institute (ICI) is delighted to present Milan-Hong Kong Design Exhibition, featuring the results of a meticulous research project by leading young Italian designers and students from three Hong Kong universities: The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Design Institute, and Hong Kong Baptist University. Initiated by ICI in collaboration with 5Vie Network / Associazione NMG and curated by Mr.Lawrence Studio, the exhibition runs from 26th March to 4th April, 2021 at the Pao Galleries at the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Milan-Hong Kong Design Exhibition 2020-2021 is a year-long project that brought together young designers from three Hong Kong universities and three emerging Italian design talents, Federica Biasi, Federico Peri and Sara Ricciardi. The project, conceived and strongly supported by Stefano Fossati, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute of Hong Kong, aims to activate a bridge of mutual exchange between Europe and Asia in the name of design.

Through a series of webinar programmes and other initiatives, an in-depth dialogue was created between the students and designers. In doing so, the project has developed new joint frontiers for the new generation from Hong Kong to Milan - one that highlights the urgency of taking collective action against the new emergencies of our time by designing objects with lasting impact. The exhibition features the fruits of this joint exploration, including designs from the Italian designers, and prototypes and design concepts from the students.

Milan-Hong Kong Design Exhibition will be presented in Milan, in the SIAM spaces, during the “design week” in September 2021, the most famous and well-known design event in the world.

The exhibition also features a retrospective of the great Italian masters of design from the 1970s to the 1990s, as a conversation between past and present, recurringly referenced during the project. Special thanks go to William Figliola, founder of Novalis Contemporary Art Design Gallery, Hong Kong for lending landmark historic pieces of Memphis Design.
