Everyone’s invited to indulge in ‘A Taste of Italy’ at ICC on Sunday, Apr. 6 With free admission, enjoy various Italian foods and, beverages for low cost By Thomas Hemman Times Editor An opportunity to indulge in a magnificent variety of delicious Italian entrèes, sandwiches, salads, pizza, desserts and beverages at an extremely low cost awaits everyone who attends the Italian Community Center’s 19th annual “A Taste of Italy” on Sunday, Apr. 6. As always, there will be free admission and free parking for the event, which runs from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Everything you choose to eat or drink will be available with the purchase of food and beverage tickets. Buy a book of seven tickets for $10 or single tickets for $1.50 each. Every item you buy – except one –

will be available for one ticket. The lone exception is calamari (deepfried squid), which – out of necessity – will require two tickets. Look for entrées, sandwiches, salads and pizza in the Pompeii Grand Ballroom. Desserts will be sold in the Festa Ballroom. Seating will be available throughout the building, including the bocce court room and the spacious courtyard (weather permitting). “We want to make sure everyone has a place to sit down and enjoy the food,” Ann Romano, general chairperson, said. “This year, we have again ordered extra large trays for carrying your food and beverages to your table,” she added. “A Taste of Italy,” since its

inception in 1995, has served as an essential fund-raising activity for the nonprofit Italian Community Center. Live entertainment Something else you will be able to get a taste of is live Italian entertainment. Tradizione Vivente, the Italian Dance Group of Milwaukee, will be performing twice in the Festa Ballroom. For more than 60 years, the members of Tradizione Vivente have been keeping alive the traditions of music, dance and costume brought here by their Italian ancestors. The Sicilian Serenaders (Peter Balistrieri and Tom and Ted Pappalardo) will play Italian and Sicilian music in the galleria. Their appearance is sponsored by La Società di San Giuseppe, which made a monetary donation for the event, Romano said. Praises continue for Cafe La Scala and its new menu, extended hours By Thomas Hemman Times Editor General Manager Patrick Morgan reports that Cafe La Scala’s new menu and expanded business hours continue to receive many positive comments from diners. The restaurant, located in the Italian Community Center, premiered its new menu in late January and extended its hours to include breakfast for the first time from 6 to 11 a.m., began offering a different lunch buffet

each weekday for just $8.50, and added breakfast, lunch and dinner service on Saturdays. The regular lunch and dinner menu was also revamped. “Altogether, we’re very pleased with what has transpired so far in the restaurant as well as the favorable comments from the public and ICC members regarding the new menu and the additional Saturday hours,” Morgan said. “We expect business only to get better as the weather improves.” Please turn to page 4

ICC’s ‘Cure for Cabin Fever Music Series’ appears to be remedy for the winter weary

Shortly after Dan and Chris Conley were crowned as the Re e Regina (King and Queen) of the Italian Community Center’s 35th annual Il Grande Carnevale on Saturday, Mar. 1, King Dan issued his first proclamation: “Let the ball begin!” More than 320 celebrants joined in the preLenten costume and mask celebration, which is the ICC’s social event of the year. Besides the pageantry, creative costumes and masks, there was plenty of good food, great danceable music, Italian-style pyrotechnics, a highly entertaining program, splendid decorations and a tantalizing sweet table. Take a look inside this issue to see many more photos and a report from the event, which was organized by general chairs Joanne Czubek and Rosemary DeRubertis and numerous volunteers.
