Celebrate Carnevale at the ICC on Valentine’s Day 2015

The Italian Community Center invites you to celebrate Il Grande Carnevale, a pre-Lenten costume and mask ball, on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, Feb. 14.

Co-Chairpersons Joanne Czubek and Rosemary DeRubertis said their committee is working diligently to present a spectacular and memorable 36th annual Il Grande Carnevale.

“What a fabulous way to celebrate Valentine’s Day by bringing your spouse and your closest relatives and friends to Carnevale, an event that exudes in amore (love),

not to mention pageantry, excitement, characters in costumes and masks and Italian traditions,” Czubek said.

“You will also fall in love with the spectacular dance music and the fantastic food and sweet table,” DeRubertis added.

Right now, the co-chairs ask you to reserve Feb. 14 for Carnevale.

Many more details will be announced in the next issue of The Italian Times including the selection of royalty, the dinner menu, the cost to attend and how to make reservations.

The 2014 Members Christmas Party will be held on Thursday, Dec. 11, and will include a delicious sit down dinner and wonderful entertainment, all for the price of $20 per member and $35 per non-member. It will begin with a 6 p.m. reception.

Tradizione Vivente: The Italian Dance Group of Milwaukee was the last of eight ethnic group to perform at the Italian Community Center’s 2nd annual Festival di Danza e Cultura, on Thursday, Oct. 30. The group performed two numbers before inviting audience members to join them for a Tarantella. The first dance was ‘Ntintiri ‘Ntontari, a lively song and dance

A message from Giuseppe Vella, Italian Community Center President

I want to thank you for your trust in electing me as president of the Italian Community Center for the upcoming year.

My main objectives are: • To make sure that every member and every society always feels welcome at the ICC. The ICC is your extended home.

• To work with our officers and board members to establish solid plans to ensure the future of our organization. There are great opportunities ahead for us. I feel confident that our board will work diligently to address the issues and make the right decisions. We will keep the membership updated.

• To encourage our members to renew their memberships and to volunteer when called upon to support both the ICC and Festa Italiana. The ICC has implemented a new membership dues structure for 2015. A separate article on the new dues structure, written by board member Susie Christiansen, appears in this

issue. In another article, you will find details on our “Annual Donor Society.” Please read this article carefully and do whatever you can to support the ICC. • To encourage more people to become members.

This is an objective every year, but we need to double our efforts and let people know what the benefits and advantages are to becoming ICC members.

• To produce a Festa Italiana that is true to our Italian heritage, entertaining and, most importantly, profitable. We’re already well underway in our planning for our 38th annual Festa.

I want to invite everyone to attend the membership Christmas dinner and dance on Thursday, Dec. 11.

There will be a short business meeting. (Look for a separate story in this issue.)

Appeal to ICC members to join “Annual Donor Society” being heard

By Thomas Hemman Times Editor An appeal to Italian Community Center members to support the organization by pledging to the “Annual Donor Society” is being heard.

Very early results show that 25 pledges have been made, totaling $5,400.

“These are the pledges that have arrived in just the first two weeks of the campaign,” said Rose Purpero Spang, the retiring chair of the ICC’s Fund-Raising Committee, “We’re excited about the initial results, but know we have many more members who need to make a commitment to this endeavor.”

This is the first time in 25 years that the ICC has asked its members to participate in a donor campaign. During the mid 1980s, it was an appeal to raise funds for the construction of the organization’s current building at 631 E. Chicago

Today, the ICC is asking its members to contribute for the continuation and growth of the organization which they cherish and love and all that it has come to stand for since its founding in 1978.

Like many nonprofit organizations, the ICC wants to make this an annual appeal to its members to ensure that the organization can prosper for years to come. Members who participate will become part of the “Annual Donor Society.”

A two-page letter was mailed in mid October to members. It was signed by then-President Gina Spang and then-Vice President Joe Vella. (Spang is now the immediate past president and Vella has assumed the presidency.) They stated that the ICC has become a “dependable, friendly, welcoming place where Milwaukee’s Italian American community meets to enjoy friends, wonderful food and celebrate its rich heritage. More than bricks and mortar, the ICC is a testament to our ancestors who

were unwavering in their quest to pave the way to a more prosperous life for themselves and generations to follow.”

The letter and a supporting campaign document with a pledge form are reprinted on pages 22 and 23.

“We anticipate that all of our members will give this appeal serious consideration and do the best they can to support the ICC,” Purpero Spang said.

“Many organizations have annual appeals to their members and donors to sustain themselves and to grow,” Purpero Spang said. “We believe an annual appeal is something that is long overdue here at the ICC. We trust that all of our members will read the literature that was sent to them, think it over carefully and do whatever they can to support our Italian Community Center.

“We hope that our members who can afford it will make the largest gifts, in our gold category of $5,000 or our silver category of $2,500,” she said.

Other categories of support are:

$1,000, $750, $500, $250, $150 or other amount. All donations are welcomed and appreciated.

Recognition for donations All donors will be recognized in The Italian Times and, in addition, gold and silver category contributors will be listed in the Carnevale program book that will be published for the pre-Lenten costume and mask ball on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015.

Contributions can be made by check or credit card. As an option, donors can contact the ICC office at 414-223-2180 to set up a payment plan.

So far, one silver category donation has been pledged. That one was made by Joseph John and Rose Purpero Spang.

“I want to remind our members that all donations to the ICC, a 501c.3 organization, are taxdeductible,” Vella said.

Glorioso’s makes large donation for Thanksgiving dinner for poor

Ted Glorioso (left), of Glorioso’s Enterprises, recently presented a $500 check to Tony Lupo for the Thanksgiving dinner for the poor. The donation was the largest single contribution received for the Nov. 16 dinner, which was organized by Lupo and several other Italian Community Center volunteers. The volunteers collect donations and will provide the staff for the serving of the meal. ICC announces holiday closings

The Italian Community Center will be closing at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26 and will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27 through Sunday, Nov. 30.

Cafe La Scala will be open for lunch on Nov. 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. but will not be open for dinner service that night. The restaurant will also be closed Nov. 27-

30.

During the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, both the ICC and Cafe La Scala will be closed Dec. 24-28 and Jan. 1-4.

The ICC holds its annual New Year’s Eve party on Wednesday, Dec. 31. A separate story with reservation form appears in this issue.

We will then create a 2014 ICC Members Christmas Party photo book for the ICC, and you will be gifted with a print for yourself. Have your family picture taken. Take a funny picture with your friends. The sky is the limit.

Calling all holiday bakers ICC looking for volunteers to donate baked goods for Dec. 11 Christmas party fund-raiser

The Italian Community Center’s Members’ Christmas Party is all set for Thursday, Dec. 11. As in the past, one of the big attractions of the evening is the fabulous bake sale featuring all the delicious holiday baked goods donated by ICC members.

Bake Sale Coordinators Joanne Czubek and Rosemary DeRubertis are asking members to “bring out the pots and pans, nonna’s favorite recipes and your baking skills” to help make this year’s holiday bake sale truly successful.

“Anything goes – cakes, cookies, candy, whatever your favorite holiday treats might be – we welcome your donation,” Czubek said.

If you are unable to bake, bring something from your bake shop.

Baked items can be dropped off at the ICC office the day before or the morning of the party. “If you are unable to package your items, we will do that for you,” Czubek said.

“We will also do the pricing.”

“If you prefer to bring your items the night of the party, please have them packaged nicely so they are ready to be priced and sold,” DeRubertis noted.

Everyone who is interested in donating to this fund-raising event is asked to call Czubek at 414/5290183 so the committee can get a handle on what to expect.

ICC accepting reservations for New Year’s Eve party featuring fabulous food and dancing to Doo-Wop Daddies

By Thomas Hemman Times Editor Don’t wait to make your reservations for the spectacular New Year’s Eve party planned at the Italian Community Center. The celebration on Wednesday, Dec. 31, beginning at 7 p.m., will include lots of delicious food, plenty of party favors and dancing to the ‘50s-‘60s sounds of the legendary Doo-Wop Daddies.

Business Manager Laurie Bisesi said, “The Doo-Wop Daddies have always drawn large crowds every time we’ve booked them. So, I want to advise everyone to get their reservations made early.”

The cost for the evening is $80 per person. Reservations are required can be made either by calling 414/223-2180 and using a credit card or by completing in the form accompanying this story. Be sure to make your check payable to the Italian Conference Center and submit it along with the reservation form to ICC, 631 E. Chicago St., Milwaukee, WI 53202.

At 7 p.m., guests will be able to enjoy a variety of the Italian Conference Center’s famous hot and cold hors d’oeuvres in the galleria. There will be a cash bar.

An hour later, guests will be called into the Pompeii Grand Ballroom for a sumptuous dinner.

It will begin with an Italian salad with Romaine lettuce topped with mozzarella cheese, salami, prosciutto, tomatoes, black olives, artichoke hearts and pepperoncini.

The main course will feature a combination entrée – center cut beef tenderloin topped with wild mushroom Bordelaise sauce and jumbo shrimp scampi – served over angel hair pasta, steamed vegetable medley, Italian bread, and coffee, tea, iced tea or milk.

For dessert, guests will be served tiramisu (ladyfinger cookies, soaked in espresso and coffee liqueur, layered with mascarpone, dusted with cocoa powder and chocolate shavings).

ICC members: Bring your children and grandchildren to the Jan. 10 party with the Epiphany witch La Befana

For the 13th consecutive year, the Italian Community Center will host a post-Christmas party for the youngest children and grandchildren of ICC members that celebrates the legend of La Befana.

The gift-bearing witch of Italian folklore will greet and provide gifts to youngsters on Saturday, Jan. 10 at a party that begins with a noon lunch in Festa Hall.

“Since the mission of the ICC is to promote Italian culture, we think it’s important that our children and grandchildren learn about La Befana,” said Liz Ceraso, chairperson of the Avanti Committee, which is organizing the event.

Having the party after the busy Christmas season has also proven quite popular with the parents and grandparents, added Rose Anne Ceraso-Fritchie and Mary Anne Ceraso-Alioto, Avanti Committee members, who are co-chairing the children’s party.

Party details Children are encouraged to wear socks that day because, after they eat lunch, the children will be asked to take off their shoes and leave them behind a curtain. ICC officials have heard that Befana has expressed an interest in leaving special treats in the children’s shoes.

The lunch will feature a buffet with food to please both the children and the adults in attendance.

Saint Stephen’s Day is a holiday across Italy

December 26th is the day to honor San Stefano (Saint Stephen) in Italy and many other countries. The Feast of San Stefano is a national holiday in Italy.

San Stefano was one of the early disciples who joined the Church of Jerusalem when it was in its infancy following the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven. He is said to be the first Christian martyr.

La Befana: The Yuletide Witch In Italy, there still remains a tradition involving the beneficent witch named Befana. On the night of the Feast of Epiphany (the 12th and final day of the Christmas holiday observance), Befana leaves presents in children’s stockings, hung upon a hearth or a stairway railing (a tradition quite similar to the American Santa Claus story).

Legend has it that when Christ was born, the Three Wise Men (I re magi) stopped at Befana’s hut for directions on their way to Bethlehem and, in the conversation, asked her to join them.

Befana said no, she was too busy.

Later, a shepherd asked her to join him in paying respects to the

When it became dark, Befana noticed a great star illuminating the sky just as the Wise Men had told her earlier in the day. She then realized that perhaps she should have gone with them. So, she gathered some toys that had belonged to her own baby, who had died as an infant, and boarded her magic broom to find the kings and the stable where the Christ Child lay.

The legend states that, regretfully, Befana was unable to locate either the Three Wise Men or the place where Jesus was born. Since then, each year at this time, Befana continues her search for the Christ Child and leaves gifts along the way for good children and pieces of charcoal for bad ones.

Here’s an amazing fact about Befana’s visits to the ICC’s annual party: Not once in the past 12 years has Befana left charcoal in the shoes or gift bags of any of the children attending. Could that possibly mean that all the children had been good?

“We always try our best to accommodate all requests, but if we can reserve dates and rooms early, it’s to everyone’s advantage,” Stachowiak said.

Added Hemman, “If we don’t

have your schedule of events and the starting time of each event, it becomes very difficult and a bit frustrating to prepare an accurate calendar listing for the newspaper.

We do hear about it when an event is not listed in the calendar. This is why we have to depend on the presidents or the designated representatives of the many organizations to supply that information to us.”

Thanks to those who have already responded Stachowiak and Hemman wish to thank the societies and organizations that have already responded to this request, which has been published in two previous issues.

Oldies But Goodies Spectacular winter concert set for Feb. 7 at the ICC

It was just announced that the Oldies But Goodies Spectacular will present its annual winter concert with special guest stars on Saturday, Feb. 7 in the Italian Community Center’s Festa Ballroom. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the show beginning at 8 p.m.

Kim Marie, one of the group’s lead vocalists, said that the show will feature many of the rock-androll artists who headlined at Midwest clubs and dancehalls in the 1960s and ‘70s.

One of the guests will be “Twisting” Harvey Scales of the Seven Sounds. Scales was one of the writers of the 1976 millionseller “Disco Lady,” the biggest hit sung by the late Johnnie Taylor.

Appearing also will be Tom

Anthony, who, like the Oldies But Goodies Spectacular, has a large following and has performed often at the ICC. Many other guest stars will be performing, Kim Marie said. Look for more details in the next issue of The Italian Times.

Ticket prices have been set at $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

Information on how to purchase tickets will also appear in the next issue.

The Oldies But Goodies Spectacular has been presenting these winter concerts at the ICC for the last several years. All of the shows have been sold out.

Opera Topics by Angelo Castronovo

Opera over the airwaves began this month with the HD broadcast of Gioachino Rossini’s (1792-1868) Il Barbiere di Siviglia from the Metropolitan Opera in New York on Saturday, Nov. 22. The same opera will kick off the radio broadcast season on Saturday, Dec. 6.

Leading roles will be sung by Christopher Maltman as Figaro, Isabel Maltman as Rosina, Christopher Brownlee as Count Almaviva, Maurizio Mauroaro as Dr. Bartolo, Prata Burchuladze as Don Basilio and Yunpeng Wang as Fiorello.

Rossini was considered one of the greatest of all composers of comic opera, as well as the founding father of Italian romantic opera. He wrote an impressive

number of successful works including L’Italiana in Algeri, La Cenerentola, Le Comte Ory and Mosè in Egitto. He also wrote a version of Otello and Guillaume Tell, a work which many called his finest serious work.

Rossini wrote his own decorative musical ornamentations, it was reported, in an attempt to curb the excesses of many singers of the day.

Another version of The Barber was written by Giovanni Paiseiello (1740-1816), a composer who was called the finest Italian writer of the late 18th century and who composed some 82 other operatic works. His style is noted for elegant and charming melodies and deft orchestrations.

In Rossini’s version, wonderful

arias and ensembles are woven throughout the opera including Ecco Ridente, Se Il Mio Nome, La Calunia and the virtuoso piece for Figaro – Largo al Factotum.

Rossini’s work was initially a fiasco, but eventually, went on to become one of the most popular of all operatic works.

And it is with great sadness that we must report the passing of the great and beloved soprano Licia Albanese at the age of 105. She was an international star who was indelibly linked with the old Metropolitan Opera House on 39th Street in Manhattan where she debuted in 1940 as Cio-Cio San in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Her career was an illustrious one, and we will deal with more of it in a

It may surprise you that it was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) who piqued the interest of Americans in Dante’s work with his translation in 1867.

Longfellow was a professor of French and Spanish at Harvard from 1836 to 1854 but resigned in order to devote himself to translation and writing.

It is really remarkable that he learned Italian so well, without formal instruction, so well that he was able to translate Dante’s work and the works of other Italian authors as well as an anthology of Italian Short Stories (“Saggi de’ Novellieri italiani d’ogni secolo”). He even translated poems by Michelangelo.

Not only did he master Italian but Spanish, Portuguese and German as well as Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Icelandic.

Longfellow spent several years translating Dante Alighieri‘s Divine Comedy. Starting in 1864, Longfellow invited his literary friends to weekly Wednesday evening meetings to perfect the translation and review proofs. The “Dante Club” included such guests

as poet James Russell Lowell. The full three-volume translation was published in the spring of 1867.

Longfellow continued to revise it through four printings in its first year.

Known worldwide for his poetry, Longfellow contributed greatly to preserving the history and creating a national character of America. He wrote the lyrics for some favorite hymns and carols, including “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” If you are old enough, you may have read “Evangeline, a Tale of Acadia”, “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere”, “The Courtship of Miles Standish” and “The Song of Hiawatha”. Now criticized as “irrelevant”, he was once held in highest esteem, especially appreciated by the English; his English publishers sold over one million copies of his books. One poem garnered him $3,000. In his later years he was earning $48,000 a year! It is a shame to think that such a genius as Longfellow could be berated in our time. It’s fitting that he be recognized and appreciated for his contributions to American and Italian literature!

Longtime ICC member, volunteer Carmen Zingara dies at 97

He served in U.S. Cavalry during WWII and was ICC’s sergeant-at-arms for more then a dozen years business activities had concluded.

Carmen was instrumental in the renovation of the coatroom adjacent to the Pompeii Grand Ballroom.

On Jan. 21, 1993, the ICC Board appointed Carmen as the organization’s sergeant-at-arms, replacing Louis Aveni, who had died four days earlier and had held the post since 1980.

Carmen went on to win the sergeant-at-arms position in the election in the fall of 1993 and was reelected every year after through the 2002-2003 term.

The Zingaras were generous donors to the ICC. In recognition of their financial support, the names of Carmello and Lorraine Zingara appear on a plaque on the ICC’s “Wall of Pride” in the galleria.

By Thomas Hemman Times Editor Carmello “Carmen” Zingara, who was long active in the Italian Community Center as a member, officer, volunteer and donor, died Monday, Oct. 20, at the age of 97.

He and his wife, Lorraine “Lorre,” joined the ICC in 1981.

Carmen, as many knew him, was born Aug. 20, 1917. His parents, Giuseppe and Congetta Zingara, were Sicilian immigrants.

The Zingara family initially lived in Milwaukee’s old Third Ward.

Carmen was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Pompeii Catholic Church, the Italian immigrant-built church. He served as an altar boy at the church.

The Zingara family eventually moved to a home on the corner of Pearson and Cass Streets in Milwaukee’s First Ward. Carmen graduated from Lincoln High School.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941. Carmen was the last graduating officer in the United States Cavalry during World War II and attained the rank of captain in this horse-mounted division of the Army. Prior to enlisting, he had never ridden a horse, but, due to his athleticism and strength, he became a very good horseman and graduated near the top of his class.

Carmen served for 30 months in Panama before being assigned to the European front. He saw action across Europe and was an eyewitness to the horrors of the death camps in Germany. His unit helped to evacuate children from England during the German invasion.

In spite of all the horrific events he saw during the war, his wife Lorre said Carmen always spoke with pride of a Christmas celebration for displaced English children

that he helped to arrange with a French nun. Through his efforts, the children received candy and other rations intended for the soldiers, and ice cream, a treat that these youngsters had never eaten.

“Carmen always had a big heart,” Lorre said.

Carmen’s military service ended in 1946.

After the war, Carmen worked at Jos. Schlitz Brewing Co. in Milwaukee for 35 years where he became a superintendent.

In 1991 and 1992, Carmen and a group of volunteers performed painting, tiling and repair jobs in various parts of the Italian Community Center, especially the kitchen area. The volunteers sometimes included his wife, Lorre.

Emanueles celebrate family at a reunion

Maria and Giuseppe started something big when they came to the United States in 1911. They raised 12 children who have, in turn, multiplied their numbers in a big way.

A gathering of Emanueles in Milwaukee last month joined all 12 branches of that family tree with representatives from many states.

The first child was Rose Calarco in 1911 – with number 468 expected in January 2015. Twenty-six family members have since passed on.

Only two remain of the original twelve; Mary Longo, who appeared at the event via video tape from Fond du Lac, and Carlo and his wife Mary, who were honored at the party.

The evening began with an invocation offered by Joseph A Emanuele. Past and present military and first responders were acknowledged as well. To welcome all to the festivities a toast was given in the old Sicilian dialect of Mary and Giuseppe by Vincenzo Balistreri.

A video presentation crafted by Joe Podlesnik and Joseph T Emanuele brought both cheers and tears to the 265 in attendance.

telling stories and sharing advice in their own voice was deeply moving to all and set the tone for the evening.

A memorial table displayed photos of departed family members bringing back special memories to the older generations and inquiries by the younger crowd.

The dedicated organizing committee made up of cousins offered a giveaway raffle and a music deejay to keep even the youngest of attendees partying until the sweet table was set out at the end of the night.

The oldest in attendance was Rose Emanuele at 95 and the youngest was Cora Inglish, one month old. The clan now proudly represents 100 different surnames from A to Z. Statistics to date that include 23 Josephs and 11 Marys: • 12 children • 70 Grandchildren • 149 Great Grandchildren • 203 Great Great Grandchildren • 33 Great Great Great Grandchildren • 1 Great Great Great Great Grandchild • …..plus over 140 in-laws.

Carmen served on several ICC committees, including Personnel, House and Military Veterans Memorial. He and Lorre served on the ICC Hospitality Team, greeting visitors to the building. The couple assisted with the mailing of The Italian Times on several occasions and volunteered at senior citizens luncheons, “A Taste of Italy” and other events.

For Festa Italiana, Carmen served as a captain of a beer booth and worked on the grounds crew, which performed festival set-up and takedown. He helped with the painting of food and beverage ticket booths or other festival props.

In 1997, Carmen and Lorre were recognized by the ICC for their hard work and commitment to the organization when they were selected as the Nonno and Nonna (Royal Grandparents) of Il Grande Carnevale.

In all, the Zingaras were active volunteers for the ICC and Festa for nearly 30 years.

Besides Lorre, his wife of more than 65 years, Carmen is survived by his children Carmen (Rudy) Rasso, Robert, Mary and James (Ginger); his grandchildren Brandt

ICC hosts 2nd annual Festival di Danza e Cultura; eight groups participate

The second annual Festival di Danza e Cultura, a multi-cultural performance showcase, was presented on Oct. 30 before an enthusiastic audience in the Italian Community Center’s Pompeii Grand Ballroom.

The event was sponsored and hosted by the ICC, its Culture Committee and Tradizione Vivente, in conjunction with the International Institute of Wisconsin.

Festival di Danza e Cultura was held as part of the ICC’s recognition of the nationwide celebration of Italian American Heritage Month (during the month of October) and served as a preview of the 71st Holiday Folk Fair International, which took place Nov. 21-23 at State Fair Park.

Groups that participated in the program included the Indian Community School Drummers and Dancers, Syrena Polish Folk Dance Ensemble, Dnipro Ukrainian Folk Dance Ensemble, Tatra Slovak Dancers, Academia de Danza Mexico, Billy Mitchell Scottish Pipes & Drums, Caledonian Scottish Dancers and Tradizione Vivente, the Italian Dance Group.

All of the groups are from the Milwaukee area.

Gina Jorgensen, a member of the ICC Culture Committee and Tradizione Vivente, served as the chief organizer of the event. She was assisted by other members of the Culture Committee. Al Durtka, International Institute of Wisconsin President and CEO. Durtka served as the master of ceremonies. The International Institute is the sponsor of the Holiday Folk Fair International.

“It was a fantastic program, showcasing and celebrating the ethnic diversity of our community,” Jorgensen said. “I want to thank all the groups that volunteered to participate and Al Durtka for serving as our master of ceremonies. It was an opportunity to see an entertaining program that truly served as a preview of the Holiday Folk Fair.

People who did not attend missed a wonderful evening of multi-cultural performances and great Italian food.”

An Italian buffet, prepared by the Italian Conference Center culinary staff, was available before the showcase performance.

As a fund-raising activity, the Culture Committee sponsored a raffle in which ticket buyers had chances to win two Italian baskets filled with products, two Folk Fair baskets and two sets of six Folk Fair tickets. Christina Ziino and other committee committee secured the donations prizes and sold the tickets.

Al Durtka is the President and Chief Executive Officer of International Institute of Wisconsin. He served as master of ceremonies for the ICC’s Festival di Danza e Cultural. The International Institute is the sponsoring organization for the annual Holiday Folk Fair International.

Mark it down: Taste of Italy is Sunday, Apr. 19

Mark your calendars now: The Italian Community Center’s 20th annual “A Taste of Italy” will be Sunday, Apr. 19.

This Italian food extravaganza is an essential fund-raising activity for the nonprofit organization and has always been successful.

Chairperson Ann Romano said that April 19 was chosen because it is two Sundays after Easter and the Milwaukee Brewers will be playing out-oftown (in Pittsburgh). Romano has chaired 19 of the 20 Taste of Italy events.

Festival di Danza e Cultura performances

Following in the traditions of an Indian pow-pow, the members of the Indian Community School Drummers and Dancers performed what is known as the “Grand Entry.” It is the opening dance of the pow-pow. It served as the opening performance for Festival di Danza e Cultura. The members of this group are between the ages of 6 and 12 and are under the direction of Jason Dropik.

Here are the members of Syrena Polish Folk Dance Ensemble of Milwaukee performing the Opoczno Suite. The suite is composed of dances common only to Opoczno, a region in south-central Poland. The group is directed by Duane Tomka.

Below: The Dnipro Ukrainian Folk Dance Ensemble performed two dances: Koketka, a flirtatious dance, and Hopak, the “Hopping Dance.”

Amy Mulhall is the director of this group.

The Tatra Slovak Dancers of Milwaukee sang Rusinsky Spevy, four songs that come from the Rusinsky region in eastern Slovakia close to the Ukrainian border. The songs were performed in the Rusinsky dialect. The group is directed by Sabrina Madgett.

ICC installation dinner – Nov. 1, 2015

Betty Puccio, a past president of the Italian Community Center and the organization’s first female president (1990-91), presented a proclamation from Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett to newly installed ICC President Giuseppe Vella. Barrett proclaimed Nov. 1, 2014 as “Giuseppe Vella Day in the City of Milwaukee.” Barrett was unable to attend.

Newly elected officers were sworn in. From the left: Treasurer Dave Spano, Vice President Dean Cannestra, Secretary Rose Anne (Ceraso) Fritchie and Sergeant-At-Arms Joanne (Sanfilippo) Czubek. Being sworn into office was nothing new for this group. Spano is a past president (20102012) and a past treasurer. Cannestra has been a director the last four years. Fritchie is entering her 11th consecutive term as secretary. Czubek is returning for her fifth consecutive term as sergeant-at-arms.

December weather in Italy

Depending on where you are staying in Italy in December, temperatures can range from cold to not so cold and precipitation in the form of rain or snow is quite common.

There’s generally snow in the mountains along the northern border of the country and in the mountain ranges that run down the length of the peninsula. There can even be snow in the cities that aren’t up in the mountains. Where there isn’t snow, there tends to be rain more days than not.

The temperatures in northern Italy average between 23º and 45º Farenheit. In central Italy, temperatures are usually between 40º and 57º. It’s a bit warmer in southern Italy (including Sicily), where temperatures average from 54º to 61º.

For the first time in the 24-year history of Italian Community Center bocce leagues, a team has completed the regular season by winning every game, then gone on to defeat three high caliber opponents in the playoffs to capture the championship. That feat was accomplished by Club Garibaldi on Monday, Nov. 10.

The players on Club Garibaldi are Sal Cannizzo, Tony Corrao, Russ Sereno, Joe Lehmann and Jim Lehmann. As the victors, each player received a $15 gift certificate for Cafe La Scala, the ICC’s public restaurant.

Club Garibaldi finished the regular season in first place in the Wednesday night league with a perfect 24-0 record.

In the Nov. 10 championship playoffs, Club Garibaldi first defeated It’s All Good, the runnerup in the Monday night league, then Amici, the first-place team in the Monday night league, and, in the title match, Paesani, the firstplace team in the Thursday afternoon seniors league with a 21-3 record, the second best of the playoff teams.

The scores in the champs’ matches were: Club Garibaldi – 12, It’s All Good – 9; Club Garibaldi – 12, Amici – 6; and Club Garibaldi – 12, Paesani – 3.

Since it’s too cold, wet, and snowy to play bocce outdoors in Wisconsin in the winter time, why not play Italian lawn bowling indoors at the Italian Community Center? Winter leagues are now forming.

The winter bocce season gets under way the week of Jan. 5.

Teams in the senior citizen leagues play on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Teams in the mixed couples’ leagues compete on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Teams in each league play once a week. The regular season lasts eight weeks.

The winter season champion playoffs will take place Monday, Mar. 9.

If you’re interested in registering a team to play in a winter league, here are a few things you need to know. There are two sets of registration fees – one for those who are not members of the ICC and one for those who are ICC

members. The non-member registration fee is $40 per person per league season. A discounted registration fee of $30 per person per league season is offered to an ICC member. Each team must consist of at least four players, with one player designated as the team captain.

Each league is interested in having eight teams.

Team registration forms are available from the league coordinators: Dan Conley (Monday night), Anthony Gazzana (Tuesday afternoon), Tony Tarantino (Wednesday night), Anna Pitzo (Thursday afternoon) and David Alioto (Thursday night). The forms also can be obtained by calling Salina Castro at 414/223-2180.

The championship playoffs, featuring each league winner and four teams with the next best record, will be played the night of Monday, Mar. 9. Prizes will be awarded to the championship team and the runner-up in the tournament.

Club Garibaldi’s players were able to hit and take away points. Club Garibaldi definitely deserved to win, and should be congratulated for going undefeated all season.

Anthony Gazzana, bocce league coordinator, said, “It seems our teams are getting stronger every season. It’s really special that Club Garibaldi could go through the regular season and the playoffs without a single loss. I congratulate them.”

Club Garibaldi’s Tony Corrao can now say he knows the meaning of the of the “Wide World of Sports” line: “The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” He experienced both in the Nov. 10 playoffs. Tony, it so happens, plays for both Club Garibaldi and Paesani. During the Nov. 10 playoffs, he chose to play for Paesani. which, as mentioned lost the championship match to Club Garibaldi.

It’s All Good and Amici each had

an identical 18-6 regular season record. Amici made it to the semifinal match against Club Garibaldi by defeating Rosebud, 12-10.

Rosebud was the runner-up in the Wednesday night league with a 159 record.

Paesani advanced to the championship match by scoring a quarterfinal win over the Pallino Magnets, 12-5, and a semi-final victory over Felice Amici by the same score. Felice Amici defeated Como Si Chiama, also 12-5, in an opening match. Felice Amici was the first place team in the Tuesday afternoon seniors league with a 20-4 record. Como Si Chiama entered the tournament with a 16-8 record in the Thursday afternoon seniors league.

The Paesani teammates – Antonio Corrao, Beverly Koceja, Anna Pitzo and James Schwindt – each received a $5 Cafe La Scala gift certificate.

WisItalia welcomes Italian teachers including 3 it helped to bring to Wisconsin from Italy

WisItalia held a meeting in Racine on Saturday, Nov. 1 at which it welcomed six Italian teachers working in Milwaukee, Burlington and Kenosha, including three instructors whom the nonprofit organization played an important role in bringing to Wisconsin from Italy for the 201415 school year.

WisItalia’s mission is to promote and encourage the teaching of the Italian language, the culture of Italy in Wisconsin’s primary and secondary schools, as well as in its post secondary colleges and universities, and to educate the general public about the Italian language and culture.

Working with the Italian Consulate, WisItalia helped to bring a total of five teachers from Italy to Wisconsin for this school year, said Al Rolandi, WisItalia President.

The teachers from Italy who attended the Nov. 1 meeting were Angela Margerita Bozano, Emanuela La Grutta and Sabrina Lupoli. Each is teaching in the Italian Immersion Program at Victory School. Victory is part of Milwaukee Public Schools. For the 2014-2015 school year, the school offers its Italian Immersion Program for students from K4 (four year-old kindergarten) through fifth grade. Bozano is a second grade co-teacher, La Grutta is a first grade teacher and Lupoli is a K5 co-teacher.

The two other teachers from Italy are Alex Filippo Kaftan and Enrica Fracchia, who also are instructing this year at Victory.

Kaftan is a K4 teacher and Fracchia is a 4th grade teacher. (An article on the five new teachers at Victory appeared in the November 2014 issue of The Italian Times.)

WisItalia has the distinction of being the Ente Gestore (Managing Organization) for the Italian government in Wisconsin. Rolandi said. “WisItalia prepares a budget every year in Italian that is submitted to Rome, Italy via the Italian Consulate. WisItalia is the only

organization in Wisconsin that can request funding from Italy for language and culture.”

It was through this process that the arrangements for the teachers came about. The teachers from Italy are here on a cultural J1 visa, Rolandi said. “This has enabled us to expand the Italian immersion program at Victory.”

The other Italian teachers who attended WisItalia’s Nov. 1 meeting were Cathy Laurenzi, a third grade teacher at Victory, Rosa Tadeo, a Burlington Catholic High School teacher and Monica Valenti, a Kenosha Bradford High School teacher.

Also attending the meeting were past and present presidents from the Italian Workmen’s Club in Madison, Club ItaloAmericano in Green Bay, Roma Lodge in Racine and the Filippo Mazzei Greater Milwaukee Lodge #2763 of the Order Sons of Italy in America.

Alpha Phi Delta president speaks at October OSIA meeting at ICC

Order of Sons of Italy in America/Fillippo Mazzei Greater Milwaukee Area Lodge #2763 welcomed Tony Carfang as its guest speaker at its Oct. 15 meeting at the Italian Community Center.

As October was Italian American Heritage Month, it was fitting for Tony to come to the ICC. Alpha Phi Delta was formed 100 years ago by a small group of Italian men who wanted a fraternity that represented Italian Americans. As Tony said, Alpha Phi Delta not, unlike OSIA, strives to preserve Italian values and keep the heritage and culture alive.

The fraternity’s leadership has seen it grow around the country, now having thousands of alumni and members. It is the fraternity’s mission to meet the challenge of preserving Italian’s place in the

world, he said.

The alumni and members work to see that young men are encouraged to complete college both with scholarships and mentoring.

The Alpha Phi Delta fraternity offers career information, promotes campus service and participates in cultural events. At a recent parade in New York City, nearly 200 members were present along with celebrity member Joe Piscopo.

Carfang’s talk was both informative and entertaining. He is a strong advocate for this organization.

Along with Carfang that evening were Alpha Phi Delta members Robert Carfang, Tony’s son, and Ralph Annina, who also is an OSIA member.

By Susie Christiansen Social networking websites, such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as e-mail and cell phone texting, are currently the most common methods of communicating for people. Using those avenues, we want to develop a way to reach out to our membership to inform you about upcoming events organized by the Italian Community Center, such as Il Grande Carnevale, A Taste of Italy and Festa Italiana.

We can even email you a copy of The Italian Times.

When the ICC hosts wine tastings, musical events and cooking classes, it would be helpful to everyone involved to be able to send an e-mail blast or a cell phone text blast to ICC members and as many non-members as possible.

Right now, committee chairs and event planners here don’t always know what advertising options are

available to them and how to reach out to you. Without spending a ton of money, we just aren’t sure how to let the people out there know about upcoming events at the ICC. ICC members can be placed on an e-mail list and a cell phone list when they sign up for or renew their membership. Our application includes a place for your e-mail address and cell phone number.

Our membership contact list is extremely private, and we will continue to keep it that way. We do not distribute our address, phone or e-mail lists to anyone. Rest assured your contact information will be retained by the ICC and only the ICC, and you will only be sent messages on a limited basis.

MacDowell Club artists perform for UNICO Ladies

On Tuesday, Oct. 21, the Milwaukee Ladies of UNICO enjoyed an evening of Italian baroque, classical music and Italian arias performed by members of the MacDowell Club of Milwaukee.

The performance was part of the Ladies of UNICO recognition of Italian American Heritage Month in October.

The MacDowell Club has been bringing together a community of music lovers and musicans since 1909. The club’s public concerts provide amateur performing members with a host of outlets for their talents as well as delighting local

music lovers. All concerts are free.

The performing artists for the Oct. 21 concert were Carla Coonan (pianist), Robert Estlund (flute), Mischa Litvin (mandolin), Kirstin Margit Roble (soprano) and Irina Yanovskaya (classical guitar).

The Italian composers of their musical selections ranged from Ferdinando Carulli (1771-1847), Domenica Scarlatti (1685-1751), Wolfgang A. Mozart (1756-1791), Gioachino Antonio Rossini (17921868), Vincenzo Bellini (18011835), Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829), Achille Simonetti (1857-1928), Marino Antonelli, Luigi Denza (1846-1922) and Ottorino Respighi (1879-1946).

It was truly a beautiful evening celebrating Italian music.

Members: Please notify ICC of a change of address

Any member of the Italian Community Center who has a change of address is asked to notify the ICC promptly so that mailings from the Center are sent to the correct address.

Since the ICC uses nonprofit bulk rates to mail The Italian Times, the United States Postal Service is entitled to charge a fee (57¢) for each newspaper that is returned to the ICC and deemed undeliverable due to an incorrect address.

Even if you are temporarily away from your permanent residence and are not receiving mail at that address, you need to notify the ICC of your temporary address so that your newspaper can be delivered to that address and so that the ICC is not charged 57¢ for each failed attempt to deliver the publication to your permanent residence.

“We’ve had a number of members who have gone to Florida or another warm weather location for the winter and these people did not supply us with their temporary change of address; hence their newspaper was returned to the ICC with the service fee due for each newspaper,” Editor Tom Hemman said.

Nonprofit bulk rate mail is not forwarded to a new address, which means those members who neglect to inform the ICC of their change of address will not receive the newspaper.

Pietro Tarantino offers help to Italian citizens

Pietro Tarantino, a longtime member and past board member of the Italian Community Center, is offering free assistance to members of Wisconsin’s Italian community on matters involving the Italian government. Tarantino will be at the ICC on the first Saturday of the month from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Tarantino is a member of Comites (Comitato degli Italiani all’estero) and a liaison to the Italian General Consulate of Chicago.

Among the matters for which Tarantino can provide assistance are visas and passports, power of attorney, verification of signatures, documents relating to death certificates and declarations dealing with citizenship, civil status and pensions.

Information contained in the Milwaukee Marriage Index: 1926-1940 was compiled by this researcher in January of 1993 and will be featured in The Italian Times the next several months.

Reporting of the volume Milwaukee Marriage Index was obtained from the Milwaukee County Historical Society and copies at the City of Milwaukee Legislative Reference Bureau. These works are all copyrighted and an original copy is at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. for all time.

Please keep in mind that these marriages were actualized only in the City of Milwaukee. Accordingly, if you were married outside the city limits (e.g., Shorewood, West Allis, Cudahy), your name won’t appear in this listing. Names appearing here are listed and spelled exactly as found in the marriage volumes. If you know of a relative who was married in Milwaukee during the time period 1926-1941 and that relative’s name does not appear in these listings, please contact the Milwaukee County Historical Society. Festa dell’Immacolata Concezione è una festa nazionale in Italia

8 dicembre Festa dell’Immacolata Concezione - è un giorno di festa nazionale in Italia.

In tutto il paese, ci sono feste, celebrazioni di chiese. Molte città e contrassegnare la vacanza con musica, parate e feste.

In tutta la regione Abruzzo, la gente celebra questa giornata con falò e cantando canzoni tradizionali.

A Roma, c’è una processione papale annuale vicino a Piazza di Spagna.

Il Papa rende omaggio alla Vergine Maria, con un corteo dell’Ordine dei Cavalieri di Malta a Piazza Mignanelli a Colonna del’Immacolata della sezione sudest della piazza. Il 40-piede colonna

antica è stata scoperta nel 1777 in un monastero e fu eretto in questo luogo già nel 1856. UNA statua di Maria è stata posta al vertice della colonna.

Dopo che il Papa parla e le preghiere sono detto, un coro canta e un fortunato vigili del fuoco si avvicina al luogo una corona di fiori alla sommità della colonna sulla statua di Maria, di solito sul suo braccio esteso. Il Santo Padre benedice un cesto di rose che si pone alla base della colonna, e il Sindaco di Roma e di altre civic capi reparto.

La sera, c’è un concerto presso la Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara Coeli sul Campidoglio.

Report from Victory School’s Italian Enrichment Program

Victory Italian Enrichment Program has gotten off to a great start this year with our stellar team and five new members, four of whom are from Italy.

The four year-old kindergarten class with Maestro Kaftan is busy learning letters, numbers, new words and how to recite the alphabet in Italian. The students have been playing a circle tag game at recess with Maestra Robertson called, “anatra, anatra, Oca.” The five year-old kindergarten class with Mrs. Brunnelli and Maestra Lupoli is thriving and learning many Italian words and having fun.

The first grade is going well with Maestra Zizzo and Maestra La Grutta, while the students are learning Italian and loving it!

The second grade is thriving with Maestra Bozano and Maestra Robertson. There are 30 students in the class. The teachers have the opportunity to teach Italian to several diverse learning groups who are at various levels. Lately, students have been learning: “C’e” and “Ce sono” with many different nouns.

The third grade is working hard under the supervision of Maestra Laurenzi.

The fourth grade is getting adjusted to Maestra Enrica from Liguria and having a good year!

The fifth and sixth graders are under the guidance of Maestro Falsetti. He is having a fantastic year with the students, and they adore him!

The fifth and sixth grade students are piloting the new “Ecco Uno” text books and workbooks during their Italian lessons. The 6th graders are learning about the unique make-up of Victory students by studying their diverse cultures and ethnicities. This project is part of their Model United Nations Club and will be presented to the school and to the Greater Milwaukee United Nations Association which is planning to give the fifth and sixth grade class the first annual Peace Award.

Three students from the fifth and sixth grade are the reporters for the Victory K8 article every month. They were invited to be featured in this month’s article for The Italian Times in appreciation for their hard work as reporters.

Corbin, one of the reporters, is 10 years old and in fifth grade. He got the job about a month and a half ago. He applied for it, thinking that he would not be hired because he had no experience with writing newspaper articles. He knows that he is very good at writing creative and imaginary stories. The next thing he knew…he got the job! He is so excited to be writing in The

Italian Times for Victory School, and he hopes that the readers are excited, too!

The second reporter is Esraa.

She is in the sixth grade and she is here to make the article interesting and peculiar. She loves writing and she has a big imagination. She is originally from Palestine but she was born in Egypt. She looks forward to hearing back from the readers.

The third reporter is Alejandra.

She applied for the reporter job by writing a summary about why she would be good for the job and why she wanted the job. She wanted to write for The Italian Times and Victory School because it is a great opportunity, and it is very fun. For four years, she has been learning

Italian at Victory K8. Half of her family was born in America and half was born in Mexico. She hopes that the readers visit Victory School sometime and stop in to see her in room 120.

The Victory Italian Team had an evening out on the town together to entertain the new Italian teachers.

After dinner everyone went miniature bowling. The Italian teachers enjoyed themselves immensely and scored extremely high! They said that the game reminded them of their home country game, “bocce ball.” They plan to play bocce at the ICC sometime.

The Perfect Ending

ICC Historian Carini wants your high school yearbooks and other memorabilia

Don’t throw away your old high school yearbooks or other memorabilia. If you attended a high school in Milwaukee County or surrounding counties, Italian Community Center Historian Mario A. Carini is interested in using the yearbooks and other high school memorabilia for furthering his research on local Italian Americans.

Carini will deposit the yearbooks and memorabilia at the Milwaukee County Historical

Society after he completes his research.

“These can be yearbooks and memorabilia from public, Catholic or private high schools,” Carini said.

Yearbooks and memorabilia can be dropped off at the reception desk in the main office of the ICC. Please include a note with your name and phone number so Carini knows who made the donation.

Persons interested in acquiring a copy of any of the vintage Italian American photographs that are displayed throughout the year at the Italian Community Center or during the three days of Festa Italiana must contact the Milwaukee County Historical Society (MCHS) to obtain the photo, ICC Historian Mario A. Carini announced.

“The Historical Society is the

keeper of all of the negatives,” Carini said, who donated a massive collection of artifacts, photos and other memorabilia to the society on behalf of the ICC and the early Italian immigrants in 2010.

Wild Boar Festival celebrated in Tuscan town

Suvereto, Italy, is a small medieval town of no more than a few thousand people that’s in the Livorno province of Tuscany and is roughly 54 miles from Florence and 36 miles from the city of Livorno.

This isolated Mediterranean coastal town is normally quite

peaceful, but for one week a year, it comes to life with a festival celebrating one of the famous delicacies of Tuscany, wild boar.

A 10-day festival that starts this year Nov. 30 and continues through Dec. 9, the Wild Boar Festival has become one of the most visited

events in the region. Stands are set up throughout the town and grills are fired up as residents show off one of their most prized ingredients of local cuisine. The restaurants of Suvereto go all out as they prepare theme dinners centering on wild boar.

The festival includes historic reenactments, archery competitions and exhibitions as well as other medieval competitions complete with costumes and all the fanfare.

Besides wild boar, vendors offer other local products such as wine, olive oil and honey.
