Cafe La Scala to be open Monday through Saturday for breakfast, lunch and dinner with new menu and specials By Thomas Hemman Times Editor Starting the week of Jan. 27, Cafe La Scala, the Italian Community Center’s public restaurant, returns to a Monday through Saturday operation and – for the first time ever – will have breakfast available from 6 to 11 a.m. Business Manager Patrick Morgan also announced a lunch buffet with a different daily theme – for just $8.50 per person – on Monday through Friday, and an exciting, new lunch and dinner menu with great daily specials. ICC members are invited to take advantage of one of the Saturday night specials: members can buy one dinner and get the second for 50% off. This offer is valid every Saturday night except when there is a concert in the building or a show in the Courtyard. Other member specials or discounts are being worked on, Morgan said.

What’s cooking for breakfast? How about a frittata? That’s an Italian omelette with asparagus, Romano cheese and smoked ham for $6.95. On the breakfast menu also are a variety of breakfast sandwiches including one in a tomato basil wrap with scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, sautéed onion, mushrooms and peppers. Another is served on a toasted English muffin with ham, egg and cheese. Try bacon, egg and cheese on a warm buttery croissant. Among the other items on the breakfast menu are buttermilk pancakes; a three-egg omelette; two eggs, any style; and French toast. For lighter breakfast fare, Cafe La Scala offers Greek yogurt with granola, hot oatmeal and fresh berries, cereal with sliced bananas, jumbo muffins, whole fruit and cinnamon buns. Of course, there will be piping hot coffee, espresso and cappuccino, hot tea and your

favorite cold juices and iced beverages. “We’re really excited about having breakfast available six days a week,” Morgan said. “It’s something we’ve been discussing for awhile and believe now is the right time to launch it. With all the residential and commercial developPlease turn to page 8

Celebrate Il Grande Carnevale on Saturday, Mar. 1 at the ICC By Thomas Hemman Times Editor General Chairpersons Joanne Czubek and Rosemary DeRubertis invite you to be part of the celebration of Il Grande Carnevale, the Italian Community Center’s social event of the year, on Saturday, Mar. 1. The 35th annual Carnevale will

get underway at 5:11 p.m. with a social hour (cash bar and free hors d’oeuvres) in the galleria. Shortly after 6 p.m., attendees will be called into the Pompeii Grand Ballroom where all the ingredients that make Carnevale so special will be brought forth. These include great food, royal pageantry, costumes and masks, dancing and gen-

La Befana pays a visit to ICC to the delight of children

For the 12th consecutive year, the Italian Community Center hosted a post-Christmas party for the youngest children and grandchildren of ICC members that celebrates the legend of La Befana. Here, La Befana is seen telling the children her story. The gift-bearing witch told the youngsters that she dismissed chances to travel with the Three Wise Men and a shepherd to Bethlehem to see the Baby Jesus. Then, realizing her error, she set out on an unfruitful journey to find the Holy Child’s birthplace. In an attempt to make amends, she has been delivering gifts to good children on Epiphany Eve for many centuries. As you might guess, she had gifts for all of the youngsters attending the ICC’s party on Saturday, Jan. 4. The event was organized by the Avanti Committee. eral merrymaking. Czubek and DeRubertis report that they intentionally have not selected a specific theme for this year’s event. “People who know the long history of the Italian Carnevale, particularly the Carnival of Venice, are aware that it is a free-style, fun-filled event, where participants, decked out in colorful costumes and decorative masks of their own design or selec-

tion, celebrate without pretenses or set guidelines. Essentially, participants can be whatever they want to be,” they said. “We’re hoping that many of our attendees come adorned in their own costume and mask creations. Groups of attendees might want to select their own theme for costume or mask wear,” they added. Prizes will be awarded for the best. Please turn to page 10

Regularly printed, delivered Italian Times edition returns to members this month By Thomas Hemman Times Editor Beginning with this issue (February 2014), The Italian Times is returning as a regularly printed newspaper for members of the Italian Community Center. There will be 10 monthly issues and the combined July/August Festa Italiana issue, all in print and mailed to the residences of members. Every issue will continue to be available online at the ICC’s website – www.iccmilwaukee.com. In a cost-saving effort a year ago, five of the 11 printed issues were suspended in favor of online only issues. “While our viewership of the online editions has been truly remarkable, producing numbers much higher than we originally estimated, we also found out that we had alienated many of the older members of the ICC who either don’t have internet access

or simply don’t enjoy reading a newspaper on a computer or tabloid device,” Editor Tom Hemman said. The proposal to bring back the regularly printed issue for the members was prepared by Hemman and recommended for approval by the Newspaper Committee. Both the Finance Committee and the ICC Board voted in favor of the proposal during the week of Jan. 13. This move is expected to help the ICC increase its membership numbers. “While 2,000 to 4,000 people were viewing the onlineonly issues, we had several hundred people who had little or no opportunity to read the online editions, which created a degree of unfairness that we wanted to end,” said Hemman. “A copy of the newspaper is one of the benefits of ICC membership.” Please turn to page 8
