Beat the winter blues with the ICC’s free ‘Cure for Cabin Fever Music Series’

By Thomas Hemman Times Editor The Italian Community Center has the remedy for anyone who suffers from Wisconsin’s winter blues; it’s the second season of the “Cure for Cabin Fever Music Series,” starting Feb. 5. This free-admission series will feature jazz and blues artists on Tuesday nights and rockand-roll groups on Thursday nights.

The Cure for Cabin for Fever Series is much like the ICC’s longrunning summer Courtyard Music Series with one big exception. The

Cabin Fever Series is held indoors, in the ICC’s comfy Festa Ballroom.

Shows start at 6:30 p.m. and end around 9 p.m. ICC officials are anticipating large crowds for virtually every show, so reservations are highly recommended. Call Cafe La Scala at 414/223-2185 to make yours.

The Cafe La Scala staff will be on hand beginning at 5 p.m. to take food and beverage orders.

Reservations being accepted for ICC’s 34th annual Carnevale Beautiful memories are in store for those who attend the 2013 Il Grande Carnevale, the Italian Community Center’s pre-Lenten costume and mask ball on Saturday, Feb. 9. The theme is Recordi di Carnevale, which translates to Memories of Carnevale, and indeed the evening will be filled with memories of past events and the memories that will be made when the colorful, fun-filled evening kicks off.

Based upon the traditions of the historic celebration in Venice, Italy,

the ICC’s Carnevale has been one of the highlights of the Center’s event calendar for the past 34 years. This year’s planning committee, headed by co-chairs Rosemary DeRubertis and Joanne Czubek, are promising to top past

ICC’s PinocchioMobile makes Folk Fair debut to delight of young and old

General meeting date moving to 1st Thursday in February Starting in February, the Italian Community Center’s general membership meeting is moving to the first Thursday of the month.

There will be no general meeting in January. So mark your calendars: the first general meeting in 2013 will be Thursday, Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m.

Newly-installed President Gina Spang requested the switch to resolve a professional conflict.

Spang told The Italian Times, “Usually the date of the general membership meeting is on the same night as the Milwaukee Public Schools Board meeting (the fourth Thursday). Since I need to attend both meetings, one needed to change.”

Spang is the Director of Facilities and Maintenance Services for Milwaukee Public Schools.

There will be a membership dinner preceding the February general meeting. The buffet will be available beginning at 5:30 p.m. In 2013, the membership dinner will be available prior to every other general meeting. On the nights when the dinner is not available, cake and coffee will be served.

Zachary Rolf (kneeling, center of photo) invited members of the Tatra Slovak Dancers to join him on the PinocchioMobile, which made its debut at the Holiday Folk Fair, Nov. 16-18, in the Exposition Center at Wisconsin State Fair Park. The mobile, which has been featured at Festa Italiana since 2009, carries color reproductions of pictures from the original Pinocchio book by Italian author Carlo Collodi. The

PinocchioMobile was designed and built by Italian Community Center member Cosmo Carini. A message from Gina M. Spang, Italian Community Center President Thank you to everyone who sent me a note, card or phone message congratulating me on holding the new office of President. Your support means a lot to me. I enjoy talking with members and I appreciate the many suggestions that you have to offer for Festa Italiana as well as the Italian Community Center.

Many of you have asked what you can do to help me.

I believe the most important things you can do include: being active in the events at the Community Center; bringing your friends and family to Community Center events and encouraging them to become members; and finally becoming a volunteer.

We are actively recruiting volunteers for this year’s Festa Italiana and we are also looking for members who have experience in accounting, website design, fundraising, grant writing and marketing.

If you have expertise in any of these areas and

would like to become more involved, please contact Constance Palmer in the Community Center office 223/2180 or by email: cpalmer@italianconference.com As you may have read in the last issue, the general membership meetings will be held on the first Thursday of the month beginning Feb. 7, 2013. The February meeting will be a modified work session where we will take part in a group exercise to identify the top three issues that our organization needs to focus on in the New Year. I encourage you to attend this meeting to get better acquainted with your board of directors and to help us establish our goals for the coming year.

Winter bocce season to start week of Jan. 7 at ICC Since it’s generally too cold, wet, and snowy to play bocce outdoors in the winter time, why not play the Italian lawn bowling indoors at the Italian Community Center. Winter leagues are now forming.

The winter bocce season gets under way the week of Jan. 7.

Teams in the senior citizen leagues play on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Teams in the mixed couples leagues compete on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Teams in each league play once a week.

The regular season lasts eight weeks. Each team plays once a week.

If you’re interested in registering a team to play in a winter league, here are a few things you need to know. There are two sets of registration fees – one for those who are not members of the ICC and one for those who are ICC members. The non-member registration fee is $40 per person per league season. A discounted regis-

tration fee of $30 per person per league season is offered to an ICC member. Each team must consist of at least four players, with one player designated as the team captain. Each league is interested in having eight teams.

Team registration forms are

available from the league coordinators: Dan Conley (Monday night), Anthony Gazzana (Tuesday afternoon), Tony Tarantino (Wednesday night), Joe Torcivia (Thursday afternoon) and David Alioto (Thursday night). The forms also can be obtained by calling Mary

The championship playoffs, featuring each league winner and four teams with the next best record, will be played the night of Monday, Mar. 11. Prizes will be awarded to the championship team and the runner-up in the tournament.

ICC members: Make sure your children or grandchildren attend the Befana party on Jan. 5

By Thomas Hemman Times Editor For the 11th consecutive year, the Italian Community Center will host a post-Christmas party for the youngest children and grandchildren of ICC members that celebrates the legend of La Befana.

The gift-bearing witch of Italian folklore will greet and provide gifts to youngsters on Saturday, Jan. 5 at a party that begins with a noon lunch in the Pompeii Grand Ballroom.

“Since the mission of the ICC is to promote Italian culture, we think it’s important that our children and grandchildren learn about La Befana,” said Liz Ceraso, chairperson of the Aventi Committee, which is organizing the event.

Having the party after the busy Christmas season has also proven quite popular with the parents and grandparents, added Rose Anne Ceraso-Fritchie and Mary Anne Ceraso-Alioto, Avanti Committee members, who are co-chairing the children’s party.

Party details Children are encouraged to wear socks that day because, after they eat lunch, the children will be asked to take off their shoes and leave them behind a curtain. ICC officials have heard that Befana has expressed an interest in leaving special treats in the children’s shoes.

The lunch will feature a buffet with food to please both the children and the adults in attendance.

The menu will include barbeque beef sandwiches, chicken nuggets, french fried potatoes, macaroni and cheese, fruit, chocolate or white milk for the kids and coffee for adults.

For dessert, everyone will be able to make their own ice cream sundae.

The cost to attend is the same as the last several years – $10 per person. Pre-paid reservations are required by Wednesday, Jan. 2.

La Befana: The Yuletide Witch In Italy, there still remains a tradition involving the beneficent witch named Befana. On the night of the Feast of Epiphany (the 12th and final day of the Christmas holiday observance), Befana leaves presents in children’s stockings, hung upon a hearth or a stairway railing (a tradition quite similar to the American Santa Claus story).

Legend has it that when Christ was born, the Three Wise Men (I re magi) stopped at Befana’s hut for directions on their way to Bethlehem and, in the conversation, asked her to join them. Befana said no, she was too busy.

Later, a shepherd asked her to join him in paying respects to the Baby Jesus.

When it became dark, Befana noticed a great star illuminating the sky just as the Wise Men had told her earlier in the day. She then realized that perhaps she should have gone with them. So, she gathered some toys that had belonged to her own baby, who had died as an infant, and boarded her magic broom to find the kings and the stable where the Christ Child lay.

The legend states that, regretfully, Befana was unable to locate

either the Three Wise Men or the place where Jesus was born. Since then, each year at this time, Befana continues her search for the Christ Child and, leaves gifts, along the way for good children and pieces of charcoal for bad ones.

Here’s an amazing fact about Befana’s visits to the ICC’s annual party: Not once in the past 10 years has Befana left charcoal in the shoes or gift bags of any of the children attending. Could that possibly mean that all the children had been good?

ICC still taking last minute reservations for its New Year’s Eve party Doo-Wop Daddies to play after fabulous dinner at this reservations-only event

By Thomas Hemman Times Editor Don’t wait a minute longer to make your reservations for the spectacular New Year’s Eve party planned at the Italian Community Center. The celebration on Monday, Dec. 31, beginning at 7 p.m., will include lots of delicious food, plenty of party favors and dancing to the ‘50s-‘60s sounds of the legendary Doo-Wop Daddies.

General Manager Patrick Morgan said, “The Doo-Wop Daddies regularly draw large crowds every time we’ve booked them. So, I want to advise everyone to get their reservations as soon as possible.”

The cost for the evening is the same as last year, $70 per person.

Reservations are required and can be made using a credit card and calling 414/223-2180, or by mailing the form accompanying this story. Be sure to make your check payable to the Italian Conference Center and submit it along with the reservation form to ICC, 631 E. Chicago St., Milwaukee, WI 53202.

At 7 p.m., guests will be able to enjoy a variety of the Italian Conference Center’s famous hot and cold hors d’oeuvres in the galleria. There will be a cash bar.

An hour later, guests will be called into the Pompeii Grand Ballroom for a sumptuous dinner. It will begin with an Italian salad with Romaine lettuce topped with mozzarella cheese, salami, prosciutto, tomatoes, black olives, artichoke hearts and pepperoncini. The main course will feature a double entrée – center cut beef tenderloin topped with wild mushroom Bordelaise sauce and jumbo shrimp scampi – served over angel hair pasta, steamed vegetable medley, Italian bread, and coffee, tea, iced tea or milk.

For dessert, guests will be served tuxedo black and white torte with a layer of New York cheesecake, raspberry filling, chocolate butter cream, moist double chocolate cake topped with French vanilla butter cream.

Following a midnight champagne toast welcoming the New Year, a buffet station will be made available. The buffet will feature assorted cold cuts, cheese and relish trays, fresh rolls, pasta salad and assorted cookies.

The Doo-Wop Daddies will play from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

“We always try our best to accommodate all requests, but if we can reserve dates and rooms early, it’s to everyone’s advantage,” Stachowiak said.

Added Hemman, “If we don’t have the your schedule of events and the starting time of each

event, it becomes very difficult and a bit frustrating to prepare an accurate calendar listing for the newspaper. We do hear about it when an event is not listed in the calendar. This is why we have to depend on the presidents or the designated representatives of the many organizations to supply that information to us.”

Copies of vintage photos displayed at ICC or Festa available through Milwaukee County Historical Society Persons interested in acquiring a copy of any of the vintage Italian American photographs that are displayed throughout the year at the Italian Community Center or during the four days of Festa Italiana must contact the Milwaukee County Historical Society (MCHS) to obtain the photo, ICC Historian Mario A. Carini announced.

“The Historical Society is the keeper of all of the negatives,” Carini said, who donated a massive collection of artifacts, photos and other memorabilia to the society on behalf of the ICC and the early Italian immigrants in 2010.

Method of delivery of The Italian Times has changed with this issue

By Thomas Hemman Times Editor With the publication of this issue, The Italian Times has introduced a new method of delivery of the newspaper to its readers.

The Italian Times continues to be published 11 times annually, including the combined July/August Festa Italiana issue. Every issue is being published as an online edition of the Italian Community Center’s website – www.ICCMilwaukee.com. However, just six of the 11 editions will be printed and made available for mailing to ICC members and for free public distribution through our 70 outlets in the Greater Milwaukee Area.

This action, which was approved by the Italian Community Center Board, is being taken to save on printing, mailing and delivery costs. Our plan is to produce print editions carrying datelines of February, April, June, July/August, October and December in 2013.

With the introduction of this new plan, we have a special offer to our advertisers. Our plan is to charge for advertising in the print editions only. Initially, there is no charge for advertising in the online edition.

However, advertisers must purchase advertising in the print edition to

receive free online edition advertisements. Once we are able to evaluate online readership, we will be able to set our online advertising rates accordingly. These rates, we expect, will vary from the print edition advertising rates. However, if they desire, advertisers will be able to purchase combined print and online advertising rates at very attractive rates.

We will also be offering adverting opportunities on the three websites under the stewardship of the ICC. In addition to ICCMilwaukee.com, the two other websites are www.FestaItaliana.com and www.ItalianConference.com. Details on this advertising program need to be ironed out and will be made available once the work is completed.

Our goal is to retain all of our regular advertisers and, through the worldwide exposure of the online edition, attract many more new readers, as well as advertisers. The ICC Board considers The Italian Times a vital tool for the organization, its future growth and prosperity and an important record of the contributions of persons of Italian descent to our society.

The jazz & blues artists One of the most popular acts to play at the ICC the last few years is Reverend Raven & The Chain Smokin’ Altar Boys (www.reverendraven.com). Specializing in classic Chicago blues, Reverend Raven and company won the Wisconsin Area Music Industry Award for best blues band in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2008 and 2010. Reverend Raven performed in Florida in late October and early November.

Frank DeMiles, appearing once with his combo and once with his jazz friends, has been performing for more than 60 years. DeMiles, who taught for many years at Greenfield High School, received a Milwaukee Civic Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.

Three familiar faces on Milwaukee’s jazz scene join forces for the Feb. 19 show. They are vocalist Lem Banks, percussionist Joe Zarcone and keyboardist Jeff Stoll. The versatile Banks excels at singing jazz, but also shines with blues, R&B and pop vocals. Drummer Zarcone has been a key player on Wisconsin’s jazz scene for more than 40 years. Stoll chips in on vocals and is recognized for his musical arrangements.

Steve Cohen (www.stevecohenblues.com) and Jim Liban, legends in harmonica-style blues, take the stage on Feb. 26. Both have performed with some of the world’s top blues players. In 2010, Cohen was a finalist in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis as a solo performer. He has won numerous state and local awards over the years. Liban was known throughout the Midwest in the 1970s as the leader of Short Stuff, the innovative Milwaukee-based ensemble that pioneered the blues and rock sound later identified with bands like the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble.

Vocalist Anita Stemper takes a break from her own popular jazz group – the Anita Stemper Trio – to perform with the Tom Sorce Band (www.sorcegroup.com) and Jeff Pietrangelo on Mar. 5. Guitar guru Tom Sorce is joined by Joel Freisinger on keyboards and Brian Ford on drums.

Pietrangelo is a well-known trumpet and flugelhorn player, who also performs in La Chazz, a group that’s performing at the ICC on Apr. 2.

Known as the “Braille Blues Daddy,” Bryan Lee and his band make their only appearance in the Cabin Fever Series schedule on Mar. 19. Lee, a native of Two Rivers, Wis., completely lost his sight by the age of 8.

Having an interest in early rock and blues in the 1950s, Lee learned to play rhythm guitar. Lee went on to become a blues institution on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter. He has released several albums and continues to perform nationally and internationally with his band. Fans of standard jazz will want to be on hand for the Mar. 26 show featuring Bob Maynard & The Milwaukee Connection (www.milwaukeeconnection.biz). Vibraphonist Bob Maynard, who replaced the late Chuck Hedges as the leader of the band, will be joined by guitarist Steve Lewandowski, clarinetist John Blegen, bassist George Welland and drummer Jack Carr.

Formed in 1978 by guitarist Toty Ramos, La Chazz (lachazz.com) began as an 11-piece salsa band that featured original compositions and renditions of famous Latin bands of the time. Later, Ramos decided to concentrate on original instrumental Latin jazz works to showcase the band members’ improvisational skills and to differentiate La Chazz from traditional salsa bands. The group, which now consists of nine members, performs regularly throughout the Milwaukee area. Their only gig in this year’s Cabin Fever Series is Apr. 2.

Pete Sorce and Jeff Labarge with Swing Explosion Band (www.swingexplosion.com)will perform jazz sure to please all fans of the genre. The group features the smooth vocals of Pete Sorce and the classic arrangements of Jeff Labarge with more than a dozen of the finest musicians in southeastern Wisconsin. They specialize in the Big Band sound, but add their own unique style.

Closing out the Tuesday night shows will be the Steve Cohen Band with Greg Koch (gregkoch.com). Koch is a recognized guitar clinician and has performed throughout the world alongside some of the biggest artists in blues, rock and funk. His latest CD, “Strats Got Your Tongue,” has been hailed for featuring “sophisticated blues-based, old-school, six-string mojo of the highest level.” He is the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music’s 2012-13 Artist-in-Residence.

The rock and roll groups Whether it’s the ICC’s summer Courtyard Music Series or the Cabin Fever Series, the Tom Anthony Group (www.tomanthony.com) performs before a packed house. Vocalist Tom Anthony has long been a fixture on the Milwaukee area music scene. With his group – Tom Sorce (guitar), Joel Freisinger (keyboards) and Brian Ford (drums), Anthony presents the best of the rock, pop and rhythm and blues era with a bit of today’s country.

Anthony is famous for his Las Vegas-style show, singing the hits of Elvis, Buddy Holly, Bobby Darin, Everly Brothers, Frankie Valli, Roy Orbison and even some of today’s biggest hit-makers such as Marc Anthony, Brooks & Dunn and Dwight Yoakam. The latest CD by the Tom Anthony Group is “Just For You.” The group already has several big-time engagements in 2013 including the Wisconsin State Fair, Aug. 2-11.

Milwaukee’s “Godfather of Rock and Roll,” Larry Lynne and his band present a unique variety show that consists of rock, country-rock, blues and classic favorites from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s to today’s hits and novelty music with a touch of comedy. Lynne. vocalist/guitarist, was a member of The Skunks, a Milwaukee-based band, which landed a Top 40 hit, “I Recommend Her,” in 1964. The instructor is Enrica Tarantino Woytal, who also leads the ICC’s Italian classes for teens and adults. She was honored by WisItalia as Wisconsin’s 2009

“Italian Teacher of the Year.”

Tarantino Woytal has been leading the children’s class at ICC since the early 1980s. Over the years, several hundred youngsters have participated in the free class.

Italian I and II classes for adults and teens to begin on Tuesday, Mar. 5 The Italian Community Center will offer an introductory class (Italian I) and an advanced class (Italian II) this spring starting Tuesday, Mar. 5.

Italian Conference Center to take part in ‘Wonderful World of Weddings’ on Jan. 5 and 6 at State Fair Park

By Thomas Hemman Times Editor For the eighth consecutive year, the Italian Conference Center will participate in the “Wonderful World of Weddings.” The show – the 45th annual – will take place the weekend of Jan. 5 and 6 in the Wisconsin Exposition Center at State Fair Park in West Allis.

David Stachowiak, Director of Sales, Catering & Special Events, and Michelle LeFebvre, Catering Sales Representative, will staff the ICC’s booth (#223), which, according to the two, is close to the Main Stage and where all the action occurs.

The booth will have very visible signage, featuring large color photos of the ICC’s banquet halls and meeting rooms.

Stachowiak and LeFebvre will hand out brochures, menus and other information on the ICC’s banquet facilities and food service and answer questions that prospective brides and grooms and wedding planners might have.

As a result of their participation in the show the past six years, Stachowiak estimated that about 175 weddings, rehearsal dinners, bridal showers and anniversary parties have been booked at the

Italian Conference Center.

Show hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., both days.

Advance admission tickets are $7.50. General admission on the days of the show will be $9. Children under the age of 12 are admitted for free.

It is anticipated that the Wonderful World of Weddings & Occasions will include 180 exhibits presented by many of Wisconsin’s leading wedding professionals.

There are two 45-minute fashion shows daily on the Main Stage.

These will take place at 12:30 and 3 p.m.

When they enter the expo, attendees should make sure they pick up a “Bridal Bag” and a show directory, which lists all the exhibitors. As they go through the expo, they can put all the available literature from the exhibitors into the bag for future reference. All brides-to-be who attend the show can receive a complimentary copy of Premier Bride, a useful publication for planning a wedding.

Last year, more than 5,500 people attended the two-day show.

Pietro Tarantino offers help to Italian citizens

Pietro Tarantino, a longtime member and past board member of the Italian Community Center, is offering free assistance to members of Wisconsin’s Italian community on matters involving the Italian government. Tarantino will be at the ICC on the first Saturday of the month from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Tarantino is a member of Comites (Comitato degli Italiani all’estero) and a liaison to the Italian General Consulate of Chicago.

Among the matters for which Tarantino can provide assistance are visas and passports, power of attorney, verification of signatures, documents relating to death certificates and declarations dealing with citizenship, civil status and pensions.

Correcting an error in our November issue An error occurred in the article titled, Marisa Gatti-Taylor and the 2011 Festa Choir perform traditional Italian hymns on new CD. We incorrectly reported that the Festa choir met on July 28, 2011, at St. Josephat’s Basilica to record the CD. The actual location was St. Sebastian’s Parish on Washington Blvd. We apologize to Marisa and the choir for this error and we wish to thank Mike Kamenski and Father Richard Aiken of St. Sebastian’s for inviting the choir to record and rehearse at their church.

Members: Please notify ICC of a change of address Any member of the Italian Community Center who has a change of address is asked to notify the ICC promptly so that mailings from the Center are sent to the correct address.

Since the ICC uses nonprofit bulk rates to mail The Italian Times, the United States Postal Service is entitled to charge a fee (50¢) for each newspaper that is returned to the ICC and deemed undeliverable due to an incorrect address. Since June 2009 when the fees were first assessed, the ICC has been forced to pay more than $390 to the Postal Service because members did not supply the ICC with their change of address information.

Even if you are temporarily away from your permanent residence and are not receiving mail at that address, you need to notify the ICC of your temporary address so that your newspaper can be delivered to that address and so that the ICC is not charged 50¢ for each failed attempt to deliver the publication to your permanent residence.

“We’ve had a number of members who have gone to Florida or another warm weather location for the winter and these people did not supply us with their temporary change of address; hence their newspaper was returned to the ICC with the 50¢ service fee due for each newspaper,” Editor Tom Hemman said.

Nonprofit bulk rate mail is not forwarded to a new address, which means those members who neglect to inform the ICC of their change of address will not receive the newspaper.

This year’s Thanksgiving dinner for the less fortunate was held in memory of Robert “Bob” Cefalu, who served as the general chairman of the event for the past several years and was a volunteer since the project began.

Italian Community Center member Paul Salsini, a retired journalist and author, spoke about the role that St. Bonaventure played in the history of the crèche during a free event sponsored by the Culture Committee, on Friday, Nov. 30. He brought with him a display of photos of many exceptional nativity scenes he had found. He also read from his new book, “Stefano and the Christmas Miracles,” which tells of the miracles that occurred to people who came to Bethlehem to visit the manger where the Baby Jesus had lain. Salsini advised readers to complete one of the stories of the 18 figures each night from Dec. 6 until Christmas Eve. His new book is available at Boswell Books and Stemper’s in Milwaukee and on Amazon.com. Only pre-paid reservations will be accepted. Don’t wait until the last minute to make your plans. Il Grande Carnevale always fills the Pompeii Grand Ballroom to capacity.

“An Evening to Remember” For those who haven’t previously attended, Carnevale gets under way at 5:12 p.m. in the galleria with a social hour (cash bar) where you will enjoy an array of tasty hot and cold hors d’oeuvres. An hour later, at 6:12 p.m., guests will be called into the Pompeii Grand Ballroom for a sumptuous dinner and dessert.

A colorful coronation ceremony of the ICC’s 2013 royalty follows dinner. Then there’s judging for the best costumes and masks along with many chances to win great prizes, dancing to the popular Bill Sargent Big Band and other entertainment. But that’s not all.

There’s a money raffle and an exciting late-night pyrotechnics display presented by Bartolotta Fireworks.

The memorable evening concludes with coffee or tea and a trip to the spectacular sweet table for Italian cookies and pastries. The cash bar is open all evening.

Carnevale’s outstanding dinner menu starts with an Italian salad

and Italian bread and butter and follows with a double entrée – a petite filet mignon and chicken Sarah – served with a nest of garlic-butter angel hair pasta, broiled tomato parmesan, and a vegetable medley accompanied by a decadent dessert of New York cheesecake with strawberry filling and chocolate ganache, coffee, tea, iced tea or milk. Each table also will be set with a bottle of red and white wine.

The creative design team of ICC volunteers Marie and Craig Lieber, C.J. Lieber, Ryan Lieber, Christina Ziino, Ann Zambito, Santa Mazza, Frank D’Amato, Cosmo Carini and Pamela Mazza-Mueller are creating the ballroom decorations to carry out Carnevale’s theme, Ricordi di Carnevale. All they will say is that the ballroom will sparkle.

Other members of the committee, including Rose Anne Ceraso Fritchie, Liz Ceraso, Mary Winard, Marie Schwindt, Jim Schwindt, Mary Pecoraro, Anna Pitzo, and Ginny Balistreri are designing program books, handling registrations or other activities to further reflect the theme and make the event a great memory for everyone who attends.

The planning committee for the 2013 Il Grande Carnevale wants to borrow your photos of Carnevale from years gone by.

Your photos will be returned to you following the event on Feb. 9.

As announced in the December issue of the The Italian Times, the theme of the 2013 pre-Lenten gala is “Recordi di Carnevale,” which translates to “Memories of Carnevale.” In keeping with the theme, the organizers are planning a display of photos going back to the first event in 1979.

The committee is looking for photos of Carnevale royalty, members and guests in costumes and masks, guests enjoying dinner separately judged, are equally imaginative decorated in sequins, beads, plumes, and whatever else strikes the creator’s fancy.

“We encourage our guests to come in costume or masks. It adds to the evening’s fun and excitement,” said the co-chairs, DeRubertis and Czubek. “We’ll have judges to select the best entries, and we will be awarding prizes for the best and most creative costumes and masks.”

The judging will take place during the grand march before the fireworks show and the serving of the sweet table.

As La Gran Marescialla, Marie Lieber will open the evening’s festivities and be in charge of keeping the activities on schedule.

Coronation of Royalty The highlight of the evening will be the coronation of the 2013 Royalty.

and dancing, former committee members, the fireworks displays, and photos of any other Carnevale activities. Don’t forget to label your photos with your name, address and phone number so that we can make certain that your pictures are returned to you.

Those who attend Il Grande Carnevale will be able to take their photos home with them at the end of the evening.

This year, the planning committee is asking former royalty who plan to attend Carnevale on Feb. 9 to wear their sashes, medals and crowns and to participate in the grand march.

Raffle A raffle, featuring cash prizes, will be held to raise funds for the Italian Community Center. Tickets will be mailed to ICC members for purchase and will be on sale the night of the event.

You don’t have to be present to win. So, even if you can’t attend Carnevale, be a part of the fun by purchasing one, two, or a book of seven tickets.

First prize is $500; second prize is $300; third prize $200; and fourth prize $100. Tickets are $2 each or seven for $10. “We ask all of our members to help us sell as many tickets as possible to benefit the ICC,” said DeRubertis and Czubek. “The ICC helps so many causes in our community. This is one way for us to return that support to our center.

Italian ski resorts flourish in January While January is off-season for most tourist destinations in Italy, the ski resorts in the northern part of the country flourish.

Italy is internationally known for its world-class ski slopes and its great mountains that remain covered with snow during the winter months. The famous Dolomites are generally the most popular for those who like winter sports.

The Dolomites are a mountain range located in northeastern Italy.

It is a part of Southern Limestone Alps and extends from the River Adige in the west to the Piave Valley (Pieve di Cadore) in the east. The northern and southern borders are defined by the Puster Valley and the Sugana Valley (Val Sugana). The Dolomites are nearly

equally shared between the provinces of Belluno, South Tyrol and Trentino.

The Dolomites are listed as a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site and are characterized by their dozens of high, snow covered mountain peaks. Aiello Midtown Florist voted ‘Best Florist of Kenosha County’ In a competition sponsored this fall by the Kenosha News, Aiello Midtown Florist was voted “Best Florist of Kenosha County 2012.”

Aiello Midtown Florist is located at 2108 52nd St., Kenosha, and is coowned by Italian Community Center member Chuck Aiello, Jr., and his son, Chuck Aiello, III. The Kenosha News reported in its Sunday, Oct. 28 edition, “There are at least three aspects to Aiello’s business that promoted customers

to vote it as best this year: experienced staff, flower quality and value.”

The article stated that the Aiello’s design staff has a combined 141 years of experience in the business. Aiello, Jr., is a master florist through FTD Corp.

The business has been at the same address since it opened in 1957 and now employs nine workers.

ICC member Tudy Jennaro recalls meeting General Patton Few people can say one of America’s greatest military figures put a hand of his shoulder.

Tudy Jennaro, a longtime member of the Italian Community Center, is one of the few. Jennaro recalls the dozen or so times he saw General George Patton during World War II. Jennaro, now 94 and living in Hartland, was a driver for Captain Glenn Clasen of the Third Calvary as the allies moved across Europe.

Patton was present at some of the battle strategy meetings that Clasen attended. Jennaro was not allowed into the secret meetings because he was only a private.

At one of the meetings, Jennaro was sleeping in his Jeep when Patton put his hand on Jennaro’s shoulder and asked if this was the location for the meeting.

“He held down my shoulder as I was struggling to get to my feet for the required salute, and said to me, ‘That’s all right, son, don’t get up.

You rest, you’re going to need it.’”

Long-time ICC member Bill Sciano dies at age of 90 Bill Sciano, a long-time member of the Italian Community Center, died Saturday, Nov. 10, one week shy of his 91st birthday. For many years, Bill was on the “911 Crew,” Festa Italiana’s dedicated group of elderly volunteers who performed many duties relating to the set-up and take down of decorations, signage, lights, chairs and tables on the festival grounds.

He also volunteered for many of the activities at the ICC throughout the years. More recently, he had been a volunteer at Festa’s Cucina Showcase.

Bill was an active member of the Holy Crucifix Society, Solomon Juneau Club and the ICC’s Tuesday afternoon seniors’ bocce league and participated regularly

in the “Italian bus” trips to Oneida Casino in Green Bay. He was a founding member of the American Legion Postal Branch #0203.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the United States Postal Service.

For 47 years, Bill was married to the late Mary (nee Gazzana).

Later, he married Sandy (formerly Andaloro). Sandy predeceased him after 13 years of marriage.

Bill was the father of JoAnn (John) Szczepaniuk, Kathleen (Andrew) Lamb, Debra M. Sciano, SSND, Marie (Craig) Lieber, Michael (Crystal) Andaloro, Barbara (Mark) Georgeson, James Andaloro and John (Julia) Andaloro. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Jennaro told the Lake Country Reporter that he is lucky to be alive because of the 278 days he spent in active combat in the war.

These days, Jennaro tells his story to family members, middle and high school students and others. He has donated mementos from the war to the Memorial to Veterans at Arrowhead High School. The newly-created memorial was established by students and teachers.

Italian Community Center member Rose Spang hosted a Nov. 19 luncheon for Teresa L. Carlson, Special Agent in Charge of the Milwaukee Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, to introduce her to various professionals in the community. Carlson was named the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Milwaukee Division in the fall of 2011. She is an attorney, originally from Michigan, with over 20 years experience in the FBI. Carlson has been in the news quite often lately with the FBI’s investigations of the Sikh Temple shootings and the Derek Williams death while in the custody of the Milwaukee Police Department.

Anna Pitzo featured in Lake Country Reporter article on ethnic traditions Anna Pitzo is a retired school teacher who still helps people to learn. Education is a theme that runs through her family’s history.

These days she combines her Italian heritage with her interest in teaching.

Pitzo, 81, of Pewaukee, led an Italian cooking demonstration at the Holiday Folk Fair International at State Fair Park in November.

She has volunteered at the Folk Fair for 27 years.

The Friday session of the Folk Fair is education day. Pitzo spent that day telling the legend of La Befana to students. La Befana rides a broom on Epiphany Eve and gives gifts to children, much like Santa Claus.

Italians take pride in the tradition of Christmas because it was started by Constantine, Pitzo told the Lake Country Reporter in an interview conducted in mid November.

“I am who I am because of the values taught to me by my immigrant father,” she said. “He taught me to do right and plan for the future. And that’s how I do it.”

Her father decided to settle in America because he wanted a better education for his children and better working conditions than in Italy.

“You have to understand,” Pitzo said. “Back then, in Italy, education was expensive. My father’s town didn’t even have a high school.”

Her father especially wanted the women in his family to get a good education. He wanted them to be prepared in case something happened to their families.

Pitzo’s father left Roccamorize, a small town in the Abruzzo region.

He landed in New York in 1920 and came back in 1929 with Pitzo’s mother.

“I love my ties to Italy,” Pitzo said. “I bring that to my children and grandchildren.”

Pitzo has been active with the Italian Community Center since 1978. She was elected in October to one of four director-at-large seats at the ICC for 2012-2013. She has served several terms as a directorat-large and nine years as secretary.

After being with your family and hearing family stories during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, you may have decided to get started, but are wondering what first steps you should take. Here are New Year’s resolutions you can make to get going.

1. List what you know about each family member. Collect that information on a family group sheet. 5. Visit or contact your relatives, even those that you have lost touch with. That lost cousin, aunt or uncle may have just the information you need. Most families do not know why they lost touch with their relatives.

Whatever the reason you lost touch, now may be the time to reconnect.

Social media makes finding and reconnecting easier, but it still takes someone to reach out first. Make it your resolution to be that person.

Celebrating Epiphany in Italy The most important date on the Italian calendar in January is Epiphany, falling on Jan. 6 each year. Epiphany is a Christian festival commemorating the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles in the persons of the Magi (the Three Wise Men).

While in many countries, people exchange gifts at Christmas, for centuries in Italy, the gift exchange occurred on the Epiphany, and, in many households across Italy that practice is still followed today.

Children hang stockings the night before Epiphany in hopes of getting gifts from La Befana, the kind witch, who, according to Italian folklore, declined an opportunity to travel to Bethlehem with the Three Wise Men to see the Baby Jesus. To make amends for the mistake she realized she made, Befana decided she would deliver presents every year to good children.

Many churches across Italy present live nativities on Epiphany.

UNICO National accepting applications for its Marconi Science Award Applications are now being accepted for the 2013 UNICO National Marconi Science Award and Medal. The award will be presented at the organization’s board meeting in Las Vegas, Nev., on Mar. 9, 2013.

The award is named after Guglielmo Marconi (Apr. 25, 1874 –July 20, 1937) an Italian inventor, known as the father of long distance radio transmission, for his development of Marconi’s law and a radio telegraph system.

Marconi is often credited as the inventor of radio, and he shared the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun “in recognition of their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy.”

Milwaukee UNICO reports on bocce fund-raiser On Halloween (Friday, Oct. 31), the Milwaukee Chapter UNICO National held its second bocce fund-raiser of the year at the Italian Community Center.

The fruits of our fun night enabled us to send a check in the amount of $200 to the New Jersey Chapter Hurricane Sandy Victims Fund.

Pompeii Women’s Club reports on latest activities The Pompeii Women’s Club had an early Christmas dinner party on Thursday, Nov. 23, at the Italian Community Center. More than 60 members and guests attended and were entertained by the West Allis/West Milwaukee String Ensemble.

The 32 musicians were middle and high school students. They played many of the popular Christmas carols.

Afterward, President Carla San Felippo announced that two of the club’s scholarship awards would be presented to Jessica Helminiak and Angel True-McGinnis of Catholic East Elementary School by their principal, Gail Kraig.

St. Joan Antida High School Director of Development Elaise Williamson also presented two additional Pompeii Women’s Club awards to Omlola Adelwale and Emily Soleski.

Each of the above awards was in

the amount of $500.

A third award, for $1,000, was presented to Deacon Phillip Schumaker by the Most Rev. John D. Hemsing, Rector of St. Francis de Sales Seminary.

This year marked the restarting of the Pompeii Women’s Club scholarship program.

Club members brought toiletries to the party, which were donated to the needy who attend the Open Door Cafe meal program at St. John’s Cathedral.

Spotlight on Cultural Arts ICC member Marty Sturino authors novel about hope in southern Italian region ‘The Autogrill Murder’ is available via Amazon’s Kindle eBook

By Bill Lavelette Kenosha native Marty Sturino has written a book of hope about a region of southern Italy. The novel “demonstrates the courage of the Calabrian people, and change that is taking place in Calabria today.”

Sturino, 65, is the author of “The Autogrill Murder.” The book is a Kindle eBook available on Amazon for $5. The cost is about the same as the price of a hamburger or half gallon of gasoline in Italy.

The book is written in English with some dialog in Italian. It follows a university student who becomes involved with a violent gang of extortionists when he accepts a ride from school and then barely escapes death when his friend is murdered by contract mafia killers.

The student struggles to protect himself, his family and the girl he loves while cooperating with the anti-mafia police investigating the murder and while fearing he could become the next victim.

Sturino said he wrote the book because the story about Calabria needs to be told.

“Calabria, like all of Italy, suffers from organized crime, which literally sucks the economic life out of the places and businesses it preys upon, and for many, regardless of how beautiful Calabrian beaches and mountains are, it is a place to be avoided out of fear for these gangs and the lack of economic development that is seen as an effect of the crime,” he said.

Calabria, in fact, is growing and targeted for expansion with new roads and rail infrastructure and great progress is being made to free Calabria of the gangs to allow it to take its rightful place as a wonderful destination for visitors from the United States and the European Union, he said.

Sturino has lived in Racine for the last 35 years. He divides his time between Racine and Badolato near the Ionian Sea in Calabria.

He has undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. He is retired from SC Johnson, Inc. where he wrote for a business audience. He is a member of the Italian Community Center and the Roma Lodge in Racine.

This is his first book. However, he has written short stories for readers interested in Italy. The short stories “convey a sense of the region as it is today, to the children and grandchildren of those who emigrated from there

during the last century. Those immigrants chose to leave a land impoverished and without work, but rich in patrimony extending back to the time of the Trojan War and Magna Grecia,” he said.

Sturino also writes a series of “Dear All” letters home that he shares by email with readers.

Opera Topics by Angelo Castronovo December takes us through the holidays into a new year about which we have hopes that it will be a promising and prosperous time for everyone. This month also reminds me that there are a number of operas. some lesser known, centering around a Christmas theme.

One of the themes is even named “Christmas Eve,” with music and libretto by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The composer wrote several other operas including “Sadko,” “Mlada,” “The Tale of Tsar Sultan,” “The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh,” “The Snow Maiden,” “May Night,” and “Mozart and Salieri.”

Rimsky-Korsakov was also famous for his musical suites “Scheherazade,” “The Russian Easter Overture,” and “Capriccio Espagnole.”

Other Christmas themed works are Pasatieri’s “God Bless Us, Everyone!” based on Charles

Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol;” “Amahl and The Night Visitors” by Menotti; “A Christmas Carol” by Thea Musgrave; “The Christmas Rose” by Frank Bridge; and “The Little Christmas Elf” by Hans Pfitzner.

Several other major operas occurred during the Christmas season among them Puccini’s “La Bohème” and Massenet’s “Werther.” We may have missed a few of these I’m certain, but that’s for another time. We’ll try to relate the plots of those works in a future column.

Previously, we talked about several composers of opera who also wrote orchestral works as well.

Another in this series must include Edouard Lalo, composer of “Le Roi d’Ys.” Lalo was also the author of a ballet “Namouna,” “The Symphony Espagnole for Violin” and “Concerto for Violincello and Orchestra.”

Just a reminder. You may have

missed the opening work of the Metropolitan Opera’s radio broadcast season which started on Saturday, Dec. 8, with Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera.” The broadcasts continued on Dec. 15 with Verdi’s “Aida.” Coming up is Rossini’s “Barber of Seville” on Dec. 22 and Ades’ version of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” of Dec. 29.

Berlioz’s “Les Troyens” hits the airwaves on Jan. 5. Other upcoming broadcasts are Donizetti’s “Maria Stuarda” on Jan. 19 and Puccini’s “La Rondine” on Jan. 26.

The season continues on through May 11 and, for those Wagner lovers, there are five of his operas on the schedule. Something not often heard will be Zandonai’s “Francesca da Rimini” on Mar. 16.

L’Angolo del Poeta prepared by Barbara Collignon Giacomo Leopardi, born in Recanati in the Marches, was only 39 when he died in 1837. Religious scholar, master of Hebrew, Greek and Latin at an early age, he devoured the thousands of books in his family’s palace. (The palatial library of 12,000 books was open to all residents of Recanati.) By the time he was 19, his eyesight had failed, he’d developed a cerebrospinal condition and suffered from nervous disorders.

In 1817, Giacomo became the lifelong friend of Pietro Giordani.

However, his rigid life at Recanati became so oppressive that he attempted finally to escape in 1818.

He actually was caught by his father and returned home. Father and son relations deteriorated further and Giacomo was constantly monitored in his own home by the rest of the family. His physical ailments, disillusionment with love, contributed to his attitude on life

and virtue, love, justice and heroism came to signify but empty words.

Pessimistic thoughts, melancholy and later even misogyny pervade his works but in L’Infinito, the end of the poem expresses some happiness. A Romantic poem, it uses symbolism derived from nature: the solitary tree, the hedge hiding full view of the horizon or the beyond, regret for time past. It is less a poem about nature than it

is a poem that reveals the poet’s emotions and state of mind.

This brings us to a discussion of translation as an art. Translating poetry is especially challenging because the translator tries not only to convey the meaning but sometimes to retain the form and rhyme of the original poem.

Victory School’s Italian Immersion Program report Earlier this month, the four-year old kindergarten classes in room 104 and the FLES Italian class in room 101 were learning and practicing for the Victory K8 Winter Concert on Dec. 18. They sang, “Stella di Natale” and a surprise holiday favorite!

The children also learned about stagioni: L’autunno, L’inverno, La Primavera, e L’estate”. Stiamo studiando il tempo in ogni stagione.

The children in five-year old kindergarten attended the excellent production of “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” at the Todd Wehr Theater and had a very memorable time.

In the second grade class, the students were studying the story of Pinocchio. They are looking at the characters and the important parts of the story. They have a display for the entire school in both languages.

The second grade is also studying landforms. Their landform depictions are on display in English and Italian.

This fall we were very fortunate to welcome our new principal to Victory Elementary School, Mrs. Janine Graber, a native of Milwaukee. Mrs. Graber attended Milwaukee Public Schools and is a 25-year veteran of our district with 15 years in administration. Mrs. Graber is excited to be here to build and expand the Italian immersion program. Her biggest sunshine is when she sees the children communicate verbally, orally and in written form in Italian.

Mrs. Graber welcomes anyone from the ICC at any time to come to visit the Italian immersion program and Victory School.

Volunteers for reading and math are very welcome. We really need the support of the Italian community to build and sustain our programs. Please get the word out that the enrollment process for the 2013/2014 school year starts Feb. 4

Beloved suggests a stronger relationship than does dear but dear is closer to natural speech.

Do you prefer a hedge that hides the distances, shuts out most of the final horizon, closes off your view or takes so large a share of the farflung horizon from your view? Word choice determines syntax and syntax determines word choice. Each version above gives an adequate interpretation but choice of words and form, or lack thereof, will determine how well the poet’s state of mind or soul has been revealed.

Robert Lowell, in an effort to create a version that rhymes, completely rewrote Leopardi’s poem as a free-verse Pindaric ode rhymed aabbcbcddefegfghh: 5) That hill pushed off by itself was always dear to me and the hedges near it that cut away so much of the final horizon.

When I would sit here lost in deliberation, I reasoned most on the interminable spaces Beyond all hills, on their antediluvian resignation And silence that passes Beyond man’s possibility * * * I agree with John Holcolme, whose article on translation I read in preparing this article and who regards Lowell’s version as “particularly aberrant, missing the meaning by following a self-imposed and unnecessary rhyme scheme” when the original was written using blank verse.

In his article “Translating Leopardi”,

Holcolme came up with several versions himself, revising them until he was satisfied with his translation. Not satisfied myself with his final rendition, I made the following attempt.

The Infinite This lonely hill has always been as dear to me as this hedge that on all sides obscures the view of the distant horizon.

But sitting and contemplating the endless spaces beyond and the supernatural silences, the most profound quiet, I, in my thoughts, imagine that not so distant time when the heart shall fear no more.

As I hear the wind rustle among the greenery, I compare this infinite silence to that voice and recall the eternal, seasons dead and past, this present lively season, and the sound of it all.

ICC decorated for holiday season The Italian Community Center has been extensively decorated – both indoors and outdoors – for the holiday season. Some of the decorations are new, adding to the grandeur and beauty of this year’s display.

ICC officials encourage both its members and the general public to stop by and take a look. “It’s bound to get you in the holiday spirit,” said ICC President Gina Spang. “I want to thank everyone who participated in the decorating effort. You

did an outstanding job.”

Most of the Christmas trees and other holiday decorations were set up by Italian Conference Center employees Sonya Lusk, Roberto Oquendo and Ruben OquendoPerez, under the guidance of Laurie Bisesi, Assistant Business Manager.

Other Christmas trees were decorated by volunteers.

The ICC’s Sergeant-at-Arms Joanne (Sanfilippo) Czubek, decorated the beautiful tree in the gal-

leria. This marked the second straight year that Czubek has undertaken this project.

Members of the Pompeii Women’s Club and the Milwaukee Ladies of UNICO decorated trees in the Pompeii Ballroom foyer. Both organizations have volunteered for this project since the present ICC building opened in 1990.

Members of the Ceraso family continued a tradition, started by Bea and the late Same Ceraso, of

setting up a presepio in the Board Room. The presepio is the traditional Italian nativity display. As a result of the efforts of the Ceraso family and the late Gaetanina Balistreri, a presepio has been part of the ICC’s holiday display since the early 1980s when the Center was located on N. Hackett Ave. Josephine Ninfo and her volunteers from the St. Joseph’s Celebration set up a Christmas tree in Cafe La Scala.

Traveling in Italy in January is often a mixed bag. The weather can be dreary, cold, wet and gray.

Parts of Italy do get covered in blankets of fluffy, white snow while other parts get inundated with fog and rain.

Visitare Roma, Italia, durante il periodo natalizio Roma è considerata da molti come la prima città italiana da visitare durante la stagione delle vacanze di Natale. E ‘il luogo in cui la celebrazione del Natale è nato.

Taking place in the historic center of Aosta (Valle D’Aosta region of Italy), the Fair of Saint Orso is a 1,000-year-old event that showcases the creativity of the Aosta Valley residents. It attracts thousands of exhibitors, craftsmen and visitors every year.

The dates for the 2013 fair are Jan. 30 and 31.

The objects on display range from sculptures and ornaments to clothing and toys, manufactured with a variety of primary materials like wood, stone, wrought iron, lace and wool.

Concerts, folklore events and stands packed with mouth-watering specialties keep visitors entertained on the days before, during and after the Fair of Saint Orso.

Several towns across Italy celebrate the Festa di Sant’Antonio Abate (Feast of Saint Anthony Abbot) on Jan. 16 and 17. His feast day is highlighted by processions, music and bonfires.

Although San Antonio Abate is often overshadowed by the similarly named Saint Anthony of Padua, this Egyptian saint is particularly important throughout southern Italy and is the patron saint of butchers, domestic animals, basket weavers and gravediggers. Many believe he is the protector against skin diseases, especially shingles, known in Italy as “Fuoco di Sant’Antonio” (Fire of Saint Anthony).

San Antonio Abate was a hermit who renounced his worldly possessions to follow Jesus and performed miracles throughout his life. He is considered the first to live a truly monastic lifestyle and was repeatedly tempted by the devil, persever-
