Free Courtyard Music Series starts June 4 International Autos Group sponsoring 13th season of outdoor concerts

Krogmann For the 13th consecutive summer, the Italian Community Center’s spacious and beautiful courtyard will be the setting for a variety of free live music performances four nights a week through August, then consolidating into two weeknights in September.

Plain White T’s, Colt Ford, Matt Nathanson and country superstar to be revealed July 1 among headliners Fans of today’s hit country and pop/rock music mark your calendars now. Festa launching mobile app Gina Spang, president of the Italian Community Center and Festa Italiana, issued this important announcement to The Italian Times just before presstime.

“We are very excited this year to launch our first Festa Italiana mobile app. From our knowledge, we believe Festa will be the first ethnic festival in Milwaukee to have a mobile app. In conjunction with local design firm Thiel Design and developer, Xorbix Technologies Inc., the mobile app will be available for iPhone and Android. The name of the app is FestaMKE and we hope to launch it in the app store around June 1.

Bishop Hying to be Main Celebrant of Festa Mass Most Reverend Donald J. Hying, Vicar General/Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, has accepted an invitation from the Festa Italiana Mass & Procession Committee to serve as the Main Celebrant of the 2013 Festa Mass on Sunday, July 21.

Hying was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee on May 20, 1989. He was ordained the seventh auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee on July 20, 2011.

Prior to being named auxiliary bishop, Hying served as rector of Saint Francis de Sales Seminary from 2007 to 2011 under appointment by then-Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan. Hying was the temporary administrator at St. Augustine Parish, Milwaukee, in 2006. He also filled the post of the dean of Formation at Saint Francis de Sales Seminary from 2005 to 2007.

Hying was pastor at Our Lady of Good Hope Parish, Milwaukee, from 1999 to 2005, and St. Anthony Parish, Milwaukee, from 1998 to 1999. He also served as temporary administrator at St. Peter Parish, East Troy, 1998, and as a team member for La Sagrada Familia Parroquia, Dominican Republic, from 1994 to 1997. His first priestly assignment was as associate pastor for St. Anthony Parish, Menomonee Falls, from 1989 to 1994.

Hying, a native of West Allis, was born to Albert and Catherine Hying (both deceased) on Aug. 18, 1963 as the youngest of their six sons. After attending St. Aloysius and Immaculate Heart of Mary grade schools, he graduated from Brookfield Central High School and Marquette University. He earned

The Festa Italiana Mass and Procession Committee has issued its annual plea for donations to offset the cost of the religious celebration on Sunday, July 21.

“We’re extremely grateful for and appreciative of the support we to have received from the sponsors of the Mass and procession over the last several years,” said committee co-chairs Vivian Balistreri and Sal Lo Coco. “It is a very costly undertaking to convert the Marcus Amphitheater from a concert venue into a place of worship.

“For the last several years, a number of people have stepped forward with individual donations to help defray those costs, and we hope that people will be similarly moved this year,” the co-chairs said.

Every year, the overnight transformation of the Amphitheater is accomplished successfully by the Mass Committee, as evidenced by com-

ments received on a regular basis from people – including visiting clergy – who attend the Mass for the first time.

The Mass and the traditional procession that follows have, since the beginning, been an essential component of Festa Italiana.

Festa itself is an outgrowth of the street festivals held at Our Lady of Pompeii Catholic Church to honor patron saints.

Festa Mass Committee seeking donations to help defray costs of celebration

The Festa Mass and Procession Committee is enlisting the support and participation of priests, deacons, brothers and eucharistic ministers in one of Milwaukee’s favorite festival Masses on Sunday July 21 at 11 a.m.

Bishop Donald Hying will be the

main celebrant this year. The committee invites everyone to help us carry on this wonderful tradition.

Sing in Italian this summer!

Festa Choir forming Singers wishing to join their voices to this year’s Festa Choir will be rehearsing at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 5400 W. Washington Blvd., Milwaukee. Rehearsals will last 90 minutes and music will be provided.

Some of the hymns will be sung in Italian and Latin but no previous knowledge of either language is necessary as Dr. Marisa Gatti-Taylor will provide language coaching.

The mixed chorus is open to all voice parts (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). No auditions are necessary; however, Maestro Michael Kamenski requests that you have had some experience singing in a choir. Choir members must attend at least three of the following choir rehearsals: July 9, 11 and 16 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and July 13 from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

The final rehearsal on Thursday, July 18, from 7 to 9 p.m., is mandatory for everyone.

The Mass, which is the heart of Festa Italiana, will be held on July 21 at 11 a.m. in the Marcus Amphitheater.

Call put out for Festa Mass ushers Ted Catalano, Mass & Procession Committee member and usher recruiter, has issued a call for at least 15 new ushers to step up and volunteer for this year’s Festa Italiana Mass on Sunday, July 21.

To be an usher, you must be at least 16 years old. The only other requirement is that you attend a brief instructional meeting at the Italian Community Center on Monday, July 15 at 7 p.m. At that time, information on the duties of an usher during the Mass and the

procession, which follows the Mass, will be discussed.

Catalano requests that new ushers sign up with him early and then follow through on their commitment. To volunteer as an usher or for more information, call Catalano at 414/305-9769.

At least 55 ushers are needed every year for the Mass, which has drawn up to 15,000 people.

Catalano said he has about 40 dedicated ushers who show up automatically each year.

You provide the children, we provide the masks. We are looking for 20 children to walk in the parade, wearing feathered

Carnevale masks.

Festa is just a few months away, so there is no better time to get ready than now. Search online for a colorful clown costume or Italian costume. Search the shops. Have nonna make an Italian costume – a labor of love that will surely result in an amazing costume.

You may also allow us to feature your children in beautiful Carnevale masks supplied by the Italian Community Center.

We would love to have as many children as possible march in the parade. Imagine how happy and festive and touching our parade will be with the sweet faces of children throughout.

That is our dream. Help us realize it.

Searching for floats Do you have access to a parade float that we might be able to borrow or rent in July 2013 for our

parade? Do you know of an organization or person who has a float available? We hope to add beautiful floats each year that will make our parade really special.

Singers wanted for Festa’s ‘Italian Idol’ contest

For the seventh consecutive year, Festa Italiana is conducting its Italian Idol karaoke competition for amateur singers, 14 years and older. This year, the nightly event will be presented on the Cucina Showcase stage, starting at 8 p.m.

test for the second consecutive year is WFA – Asset Management, Nick Enea, President.

The 36th annual Festa takes place Friday, July 19 through Sunday, July 21 on the Summerfest grounds.

To register to compete in Italian Idol, persons who believe they have some degree of vocal ability are asked to come to the Cucina Showcase starting at 6 p.m. on the

Friday or Saturday of Festa to sign up. Idol managers Christine Conley and Sandy Winard said they are looking for 16 contestants each night.

At the time of registration, contestants will be asked to decide what song they wish to perform.

They are allowed to choose any title from the extensive karaoke repertoire brought to Festa by Kim Marie, the founder and one of the

vocalists of the Oldies But Goodies Spectacular, a rock and roll band that is slated to perform nightly at Festa.

Four of the 16 contestants will be selected by a panel of judges on both Friday and Saturday night to move on to the championship round on Sunday, July 21. The eight finalists will sing for a chance to win cash prizes on Sunday night. This year, the prize money is: $500 for first prize, $300 for second prize and $200 for third prize.

In the finals, the contestants will not only sing the song of their choice, but will be asked to choose a number from Kim Marie’s Italian tunes selection.

Last year, Anastasia Lee of Green Bay captured the first prize.

Gregory Rogalinski won second prize and Steven Mattox of Kenosha took third prize.

Winard will be serving as the emcee each night.

ICC announces postponement of golf tournament Italian Community Center officials have announced that a golf tournament, initially scheduled as a fund-raising activity for the nonprofit organization on June 10, has been postponed.

Look for any word on the rescheduling of the event in a future edition of The Italian Times.

ICC Election Committee chosen

By Thomas Hemman Times Editor In compliance with the Italian Community Center’s Constitution & By-Laws, an Election Committee was chosen at the May 2 general membership meeting. The committee is charged with the duty of preparing a slate of candidates for the upcoming ICC election.

According to Article V, Section 3 of the ICC By-Laws, “An Election Committee consisting of two members in good standing appointed by the President and three members in good standing nominated and elected from the floor at the May general membership meeting shall develop a slate of candidates for the five officer positions and four director-at-large positions on the Board of Directors. The President shall have the authority to name the chairperson from among the five members of the Election Committee.” (A member in good standing is someone who holds a current paid membership.)

With that stated, Gina M. Spang used her presidential authority to appoint Rosemary DeRubertis and Frank D’Amato to the committee.

She named DeRubertis as chairperson.

Members attending the May 2 general meeting elected Bill Dickinson, Sal Lo Coco and Mary Ann Maglio to complete the committee.

What happens next?

The Election Committee has until the August general meeting (set for Thursday, Aug. 1 at 6:30 p.m.) to ready a slate of candidates.

Persons interested in running for president, vice president, treasurer, secretary or sergeant-at-arms or one of the four open director-atlarge seats are asked to inform any member of the Election Committee of their intentions.

According to Article V, Section 1 of the ICC By-Laws: “To be eligible as an officer or board member of the Italian Community Center, a potential candidate: “a. Must be a member in good

standing; “b. Must have been a member of the Italian Community Center for at least 12 months prior to his/her nomination; “c. Must have served on at least one Italian Community Center or Festa Italiana committee within the past five years or attended at least 50% of the regularly-scheduled general membership meetings in the preceding year as confirmed by the record.”

Once the committee presents its proposed slate at the Aug. 1 general meeting, additional nominations can and will be taken from the floor.

The next responsibility of the Election Committee is stipulated in Article V, Section 1.d., which states, “Nominations for an officer or board member to be made from the floor will be validated by the Election Committee prior to placing the names on the ballot.”

Election ballot Next, the Election Committee will conduct a drawing to determine placement of names on the election ballot. The committee will go on to oversee the mailing of ballots to all members in good standing.

The mailing takes place within eight days of the September general meeting, which is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 5.

Members must make sure that their ballots are postmarked no later than the Thursday preceding the October general meeting to be eligible to be counted. The October general meeting is Thursday, Oct. 3, which means ballots need to be postmarked no later than Sept. 26.

Ballots that are not postmarked or are postmarked after Sept. 26 will not be opened or counted.

The Election Committee will select volunteers to help them tabulate the votes on the qualifying ballots on the day of the October general meeting. The results will be announced during the meeting.

Newly-elected officers and directors will officially begin their serv-

ice on Thursday, Nov. 1.

All nomination and election procedures are spelled out in Article V of the ICC By-Laws.

Terms of office The term of officers is one year.

The current officers are: President Gina M. Spang, Vice President Giuseppe Vella, Treasurer Sam Purpero, Secretary Rose Anne Ceraso-Fritchie and Sergeant-atArms Joanne (Sanfilippo) Czubek.

Under the term limit stipulation set forth in Article IV, Section 8.c., “A President shall be allowed to succeed himself/herself for one term and one term only. All other officers shall be eligible for re-election to said offices without limitations.” Since Spang was first elected last fall, she is eligible for reelection. All other officers are eligible to seek another term of office, if they so desire.

The term for directors-at-large is two years. Current directors who will be completing their service are Ralph Busalacchi, Elizabeth Ceraso, Peter Gustin and Tony Piacentini.

The term limit stipulation for

directors-at-large is set forth in Article V, Section 8.b., which states, “The term of office for Directors-At-Large shall be two years, with four Directors elected each year. No Director-At-Large may serve more than two consecutive terms (four consecutive years).

After two such consecutive terms, he/she must either run for a higher office or remain on a hiatus from the Board of Directors as a Director-At-Large for at least a one-year period prior to running for Director-At-Large again.” Busalacchi is nearing the completion of two consecutive terms and will not be eligible for re-election as a directorat-large. He was appointed to the the Board initially in February 2009 to fill a vacancy, was elected in that fall and re-elected in 2011.

Ceraso, Gustin and Piacentini were elected to their first two-year term in 2011 and are, therefore, eligible to run for a second term.

ICC Historian Carini wants your high school yearbooks and other memorabilia Don’t throw away your old high school yearbooks or other memorabilia. If you attended a high school in Milwaukee County or surrounding counties, Italian Community Center Historian Mario A. Carini is interested in using the yearbooks and other high school memorabilia for furthering his research on local Italian Americans.

Carini will deposit the yearbooks and memorabilia at the Milwaukee County Historical

“These can be yearbooks and memorabilia from public, Catholic or private high schools,” Carini said.

Copies of vintage photos displayed at ICC or Festa available through Milwaukee County Historical Society Persons interested in acquiring a copy of any of the vintage Italian American photographs that are displayed throughout the year at the Italian Community Center or during the four days of Festa Italiana must contact the Milwaukee County Historical Society (MCHS) to obtain the photo, ICC Historian Mario A. Carini announced.

“The Historical Society is the

keeper of all of the negatives,” Carini said, who donated a massive collection of artifacts, photos and other memorabilia to the society on behalf of the ICC and the early Italian immigrants in 2010.

Sarah Hopley, archivist with the Milwaukee County Historical Society, sat down with Mario A. Carini, Italian Community Center’s historian, on May 1 to review digital copies and produce identification information for many of the thousands of vintage Italian American photos that Carini has donated to the Historical Society on behalf of the ICC membership. These are the photos that members and friends of the ICC have donated to the organization over the course of the years, Carini said. Since he made the massive donation, MCHS staff has scanned the photos and stored them digitally on disks. Eventually, the photos will be posted on the MCHS website. MATC’s ‘Culinary Stars of the Future’ shine at ICC’s Apr. 17 ‘La Cucina’ class Young, talented student chefs from the Milwaukee Area Technical College’s Culinary Program displayed their prowess to attendees at the Apr. 17 “La Cucina” program presented by the Italian Community Center’s Membership Committee.

Billed as “The Culinary Stars of the Future,” these student chefs prepared wild boar cannelloni, risotto di Barbietola and Chianti

and some tantalizing desserts.

The student chefs were Whitney Proebstring and Eric Shneyder (for the wild boar cannelloni), Rueben Godoy (risotto dish) and Chuck Stepanovich and Mark Kory (desserts).

Sagra di San Giovanni The Sagra di San Giovanni is the oldest historical event to take place on Lake Como in the Lombardy region of Italy. It is celebrated the last weekend of June in the town of Como. Hundreds of tiny lamps float in the lake and there’s a large fireworks display on the Saturday evening (June 29 this year).

The next morning brings a parade on the lake in which boats are decorated with flowers. This is followed by folk dancing competition, the showing of folk art displays and flag throwing competitions.

Something special brewing on Festa’s Spiked Island Adult Lemonade Stage

Plain White T’s, Colt Ford, Matt Nathanson and country superstar to be revealed July 1 among headliners from page 1 tracks such as “Ride Through the Country,” “Cold Beer,” “Chicken & Biscuits,” and “Country Thang.”

Ford takes the Spiked Island Stage at 9 p.m., July 19.

Opening for him at 6 p.m. is Bella Cain, a newly-formed, young, high-energy six piece Top 40 country group that delivers a nonstop and explosive performance.

Based in Kenosha, the group has experienced success playing at local venues and is quickly gaining a following across the Midwest. With a “big” guitar sound, they also bring five-part harmonies, fiddle, steel guitar, piano, banjo, a solid rhythm section and both male/female vocals to provide a full and dramatic sound. Festa attendees seeing Bella Cain can expect the hottest new country music, along with a few age-old favorites.

As their many fans know, the Plain White T’s have already experienced much success with platinum-selling hits including “Hey There Delilah” (which reached #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and topped 13 international charts), “Hate (I Really Don’t Like You),” “1,2,3,4” and “Rhythm of Love.” The group was nominated for two 2008 Grammy Awards for “Song of the Year” and “Best Pop Performance for a Duo or Group with Vocals.”

The mega-hit “Hey There Delilah,” which became the fourth song in history to sell over three-million digital downloads, also earned the group an MTV Video and American Music Awards and Teen Choice and People’s Choice nominations.

Known for singing songs about love, heartbreak and everything in between, the Chicago-based poprock band draws inspiration from the likes of The Beatles, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp, but their care-free vibes and unique sound are all their own.

Dick Contino (www.dickcontino.com), “legendary virtuoso of the accordion,” returns for his 34th appearance in the 36-year history of Festa Italiana in Milwaukee.

Famous for his musical stylings of such classics as “Lady of Spain” and “Tico Tico,” Contino, who turned 83 earlier this year, resides in Las Vegas with his wife, Tonia, and still performs regularly across the nation.

Louis Prima, Jr. (www.louisprimajr.com) is a Las Vegas-based entertainer best known for carrying on the legacy of his late father, Louis Prima, the original “King of Swing.” Born on Father’s Day in 1965, he is the youngest of Louis and Gia (Maione) Prima’s children and their only son. He is a trumpeter, singer and bandleader. He and his band made a rousing debut at Milwaukee’s Festa last year.

Singer Moreno Fruzzetti (www.morenofruzzetti.com), who just released a new CD titled “Pensando,” is back in the Festa lineup after a year away. “ His new CD, featuring 14 tracks, was recorded in his hometown of Pisa, Italy. Awarded with the prestigious honor of “Ambassador of Italian Music in America,” Fruzzetti has

Pietro Tarantino offers help to Italian citizens Pietro Tarantino, a longtime member and past board member of the Italian Community Center, is offering free assistance to members of Wisconsin’s Italian community on matters involving the Italian government. Tarantino will be at the ICC on the first Saturday of the month from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Tarantino is a member of Comites (Comitato degli Italiani all’estero) and a liaison to the Italian General Consulate of Chicago.

Among the matters for which Tarantino can provide assistance are visas and passports, power of attorney, verification of signatures, documents relating to death certificates and declarations dealing with citizenship, civil status and pensions.

Restaurateur and singer – that, in a nutshell, describes Tony Spavone (www.tonyspavone.com). A native of Naples (Campania), Italy, Spavone emigrated to the United States in 1965 and worked at his father’s restaurant in Chicago. But singing was, and continues to be, one of his great loves.

He received classical training in voice at the Conservatory in Chicago and later returned to Italy for additional training to perfect his Neapolitan style of singing. On occasion, he entertains diners at Tony Spavone’s, his restaurant in Bloomingdale, Ill. John Ciotta (www.johnciotta.com) has been enthralling audiences worldwide for years as an entertainer, singer and percussionist. From Atlantic City to Las Vegas, Hong Kong and Singapore to Europe and Scandinavia, Ciotta has managed to find his way into the hearts of every nationality and culture, no matter how diverse. Whether he’s performing in English, Italian, Spanish or German, Ciotta’s emotion-charged deliveries and broad appeal move the hearts of his audience.

Modern-day crooner Filippo Voltaggio (www.filippovoltaggio.com), the son of Italian immigrants, was raised in Southern California in the language, food, and music of Italy – especially opera. Always encouraged by his parents to perform for guests, Voltaggio was a singer from a young age.

Though he pursued and was successful in a career at IBM, he stayed true to his artistic roots by performing in community theater, operas and his own concerts.

Voltaggio is a nine-time winner of the Sergio Franchi Vocal Competition, a three-time National Italian-American Foundation grant recipient, a Eugene O’Neill Cabaret Symposium Fellow, and a two-time nominee for Entertainer of the Year by the Southern California Motion Picture Council.

Vocalists representing The Florentine Opera Company (www.florentineopera.org) will perform a selection of classic Italian arias and art songs from the company’s 80th anniversary season (2013-14).

Audiences can expect to hear selections from Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, George Frideric Handel’s Baroque classic Julius Caesar, a romantic serenade from the Italian countryside Festa Florentina and Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème.

People with disabilities will be Festa’s special guests on July 19

By Thomas Hemman The Italian Community Center welcomes all persons with disabilities to attend the 33rd annual VIP Day at Festa Italiana on Friday, July 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be free admission for all those with physical challenges and their caregivers. Read the details on ordering admission tickets three paragraphs down.

Participating food vendors will offer two menu items and soft drink at half the regularly posted price during the three-hour period, said Bill Jennaro, VIP Day chairman.

An anonymous area fruit wholesaler is again making a donation which will allow Festa

volunteers to hand out two pieces of fruit to each VIP guest, Jennaro said. This distribution will take place from the fruit stand in the Miller Oasis Area (the same location as past years).

To obtain VIP Day tickets, anyone with a disability is asked to send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to:.

18th annual ‘Taste of Italy’ was a wonderful success thanks to donors, volunteers and ICC staff, Chairperson Ann Romano reports The Italian Community Center’s 18th annual “A Taste of Italy” on Sunday, Apr. 14 proved to be an enjoyable and successful event. All of this is due to the magnificent effort put forth by so many individuals, societies, clubs, donors and the ICC staff.

With so many people, groups and businesses participating, it’s impossible to thank everyone individually. But I can assure you that this fund-raising event could not have been done with such success without you. All of your efforts are greatly appreciated.

I want to extend a big thank you to ICC Business Manager Patrick Morgan, Assistant Business Manager/Maintenance Manager Laurie Bisesi, Executive Chef Jack McNeir and their staffs; Tom Hemman and Constance Palmer.

Jack McNeir is excellent to work with, and Tom Hemman does a wonderful job promoting the event in our newspaper and other publications and in getting the word out to television stations.

These volunteers from La Società di San Giuseppe were working with a heavy heart after the sudden death of their president, Sam Schiera, the night before (Apr. 13). In spite of their grief, the society had volunteers such as (l to r) Nick Germano, Judge John DiMotto and Tom Spera serving at the stand where Italian wedding soup, lentil soup and chicken pastini soup was sold to guests. Schiera, a longtime member of the ICC and volunteer for Festa Italiana, was one month away from his 71st birthday when he passed away.

Dean Cannestra sprinkled some cheese on top of trays of sfinguine before they went onto the pizza oven before the start of “A Taste of Italy.”

Bradley Kugler was probably happy he decided to volunteer for “A Taste of Italy” as he was able to hear his name announced as the winner of the second prize in the raffle held in connection with the event. His prize: $500 cash.

Here’s the booth where homemade manicotti was available. The volunteers seen here include Fran Tollefson, Robert Michalovitz, Sophia Michalovitz and Anna Pitzo. Pitzo and Sophia Michalovita donated the manicotti. Robert Michalovitz won the first prize, a 55-inch LCD HD television, in the Taste of Italy raffle.

Free Courtyard Music Series starts June 4 from page 1 hand each night of the series to take food and drink orders. Due to the popularity of the series, reservations are highly recommended and can be made by calling Cafe La Scala at 414/223-2185.

Through August, the series will showcase jazz artists on Monday nights, blues groups on Tuesday nights, opera and classical artists on Wednesday nights and good-time rock and roll bands on Thursday nights. In September, the series continues with jazz and blues performances on Tuesday nights and rock and roll on Thursday nights. The shows are presented rain or shine. When the weather becomes inclement, the shows are brought indoors to the Festa Ballroom, adjacent to Cafe La Scala.

The series will be suspended during Summerfest at nearby Maier Festival Park (June 26 – July 7) and on the opening night of Harley-Davidson’s 110th anniversary celebration, Thursday, Aug. 29.

Tom Sorce, a legendary local guitarist and producer of quality music for over 40 years, put together the entertainment lineup for Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights. Kay Sparling, a Metropolitan Opera soprano and owner of a Jefferson, Wisconsin conservatory for young performing artists, enlisted the talent for the Wednesday night series.

“I think we have possibly our best lineups ever – from jazz legends Janet Planet and Suzanne Grzanna, Midwest blues favorites The Bel-Airs, outstanding opera and classical artists, an acclaimed Flamenco group and great rock and rollers including the Doo-Wop Daddies,” Campagna said.

“We brought back some of our longtime fan favorites and added several new acts to the lineup, which we know have faithful followings. So we’re anticipating a full house nearly every night,” Quarino said.

Legendary drummer Joe Zarcone is joined by vocalist Sharon Schmidt, saxophonist Wayne Zimmerman and keyboardist Jeff Stoll. Vocalist Schmidt has garnered several awards for her jazz performances, including a Wisconsin Area Music Industry Award for her CD “Dancing in the Kitchen” and a 2006 nomination for the Shepherd Express’ “Best of Milwaukee Jazz Artist.” Zimmerman plays both alto and tenor saxophone. Stoll lends his vocals to the group’s arrangements. Besides playing at the ICC, Zarcone and company can often be found performing at the Red Mill Inn in Brookfield or the Packing House in Milwaukee.

Chris Hanson Band with Robin Pluer and Glenn Asch – June 10. This group features perennial Wisconsin Area Music Industry award winner Robin Pleur on vocals, 30-year veteran violinist of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Glenn Asch, bassist Mike Britz and John Parrott and Chris Hanson on guitar and vocals. The band performs regularly around the Milwaukee area.

Chanel Le Meaux and The Dapper Cads – June 17. A 2013 Wisconsin Area Music Industry award winner, Chanel le Meaux’s repertoire spans from sultry standards to soulful, old school R&B and Motown, to contemporary wailers including Adele and Imelda May. The band features players from the Berkelee College of Music and Wisconsin Conservatory of Music on sax, keys, drums and percussion.

The MC Swingtet – June 24. The MC Swingtet, formerly known as the Milwaukee Connection, paying tribute to the music and spirit of the late Chuck Hedges, is under the leadership of jazz guitarist Steve Lewandowski.

Featuring some of the Midwest’s best jazz musicians, the MC Swingtet is known for its hard driving rhythm section and tight ensemble melodic lines. The MC Swingtet’s level of musicianship is high, utilizing some of the upper Midwest’s best jazz musicians including vibraphonist Bob Maynard, clarinetist Kim Cusack, pianist Gary Meisner, bassist George Welland and drummer Jack Carr.

June’s blues acts Jim Liban Combo – June 4. Singer, songwriter and stellar harmonica player Jim Liban was known throughout the Midwest in the 1970s as the leader of Short Stuff, the innovative Milwaukee-based ensemble that pioneered the blues and rock sound later identified with bands like the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble. Over the years, Liban has achieved an international cult status as one of the foremost post-war blues harmonica stylists and many of his original songs have been recorded by national blues artists like Johnny Winter and Lonnie Brooks. Joining Liban for the June 4 show will be Roger Brotherhood on guitar, Kurt Koenig on bass and Jimi Schutte on drums.

Reverend Raven & The Chain Smokin’ Altar Boys – June 11. One of the most popular blues acts to play at the ICC the last few years is Reverend Raven & The Chain Smokin’ Altar Boys (www.reverendraven.com). Specializing in classic Chicago blues, Reverend Raven and company won the Wisconsin Area Music Industry Award for best blues band in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2008 and 2010. The band performed several shows in Saskatoon, Edmonton and Alberta, Canada in May. Joining guitarist and vocalist Reverend Raven are P.T. Pedersen (bass), Bobby Lee Sellers (drums and vocals), Danny Moore (piano and organ) and Big Al Groth (saxophone).

Bryan Lee and The Blues Power Band – June 18. Known as the “Braille Blues Daddy,” Bryan Lee completely lost his sight by the age of 8, but that didn’t stop him from learning how to play rhythm guitar. Lee went on to become a blues institution on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter for 14 years. He and his band have released 13 CDs and one DVD. A 14th CD is expected to be released around the time the band plays at the ICC. Lee was a 2010 Grammy Award nominee and a Blues Music Awards recipient in 2011. He and his band performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on Apr. 26. Since then, they have toured up and down the East Coast. Lee’s band includes Brent Johnson (guitar), John Perkins (drums) and Nick Hern (bass). Lee is a native of Two Rivers, Wis. Steve Cohen Band with Greg Koch – June 25. Cohen (www.stevecohenblues.com) has played his harmonica with some of the world’s top blues players. He was a finalist in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis as a solo performer in 2010 and has received over a dozen awards. Cohen, who performs with several of his own ensembles, averages more than 100 appearances a year. Koch (gregkoch.com) is a world recognized guitar clinician and has performed alongside some of the biggest artists in blues, rock and funk. He is currently the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music’s Artist-inResidence. Tom Wheeler from Guitar Player magazine hailed Koch as “fiendishly talented” while other critics have called him everything from “a twisted guitar genius to “the best kept secret in the guitar firmament.”

Milwaukee Mandolin Orchestra – June 12. The Milwaukee Mandolin Orchestra (www.milmando.org) is the oldest fretted instrument music organization in the United States. It was organized in Milwaukee in 1900 and has been in continuous operation in the city ever since. The MMO is led by music director Linda Binder. Its repertoire centers on the best in traditional American mandolin orchestra music (waltzes, marches and polkas) plus light classical, modern, Italian and Latin numbers. Twice, the MMO was honored to have appeared live on Garrison Keillor’s international broadcast radio show, “A Prairie Home Companion.”

Siempre Flamenco – June 19. Milwaukeebased Siempre Flamenco (www.siempreflamenco.org) made its Courtyard Music Series debut to rave reviews last summer. The group, whose mission is “to study, interpret and perform traditional Flamenco music and dance” was formed in 2009.

Eric Wruck heads this dance/singing/instrumental performing troop. Flamenco is described as an artistic expression fusing song, dance and musicianship. It originated in and is strongly identified with Andalusia in southern Spain.

June’s rock and roll bands Oldies But Goodies Spectacular (June 6 and June 19). You can be sure that fans of ‘50s and ‘60s rock and roll will be on-hand each time the Oldies But Goodies Spectacular (oldiesbutgoodiesspectacular.net) plays at the ICC. The band was formed by vocalist Kim Marie after she completed seven years in Las Vegas and a gig for Chevrolet at New York City’s Lincoln Center and several other cities across the country. Kim Marie said her goal in forming the band was to gather the most talented Milwaukee area musicians from bands popular in the 1960s and regenerate the nostalgic feel of the ‘60s rock and roll era in Milwaukee.

Joining Kim Marie today are vocalists Tony Clementi and Chuck Travis, keyboardist Bruce Lorde, drummer Bruce Cole, lead guitarist Tom Sorce, bass guitarist Bob Sanders, saxophonist Mike Miller, trombonist Jay Allison and trumpeter Mike Betts.

Tom Anthony Group (June 13) – Whether it’s the summer Courtyard Music Series or the winter Cabin Fever Series, the Tom Anthony Group (www.tomanthony.com) performs before a packed house. Vocalist Tom Anthony has long been a fixture on the Milwaukee area music scene. With his group – Tom Sorce (guitar), Joel Freisinger (keyboards) and Brian Ford (drums), Anthony presents the best of the rock, pop and rhythm and blues era with a bit of today’s country. Anthony is famous for his Las Vegas-style show, singing the hits of Elvis, Buddy Holly, Bobby Darin, Everly Brothers, Frankie Valli, Roy Orbison and even some of today’s biggest hit-makers such as Marc Anthony, Brooks & Dunn and Dwight Yoakam.

The latest CD by the Tom Anthony Group is “Just For You.” The group already has several big-time engagements in 2013 including the Wisconsin State Fair, Aug. 2-11.

Sam Schiera, president of Società di San Giuseppe, suffers fatal heart attack after guest appearance with Doo-Wop Daddies at ICC show Salvatore “Sam” Schiera, the president of La Società di San Giuseppe, a longtime member of the Italian Community Center and Festa Italiana volunteer, died Saturday, Apr. 13 at the age of 70.

He would have turned 71 on May 13.

Schiera had come to the ICC with his fiancé, Patricia Holzhauer, joined by several longtime friends the evening of Apr. 13 for a performance by the Doo-Wop Daddies in the Festa Ballroom. Schiera, a fan and acquaintance of the group, had just completed a guest appearance, singing the 1950s classic “Blue Moon” when he was stricken.

Bystanders and paramedics worked unsuccessfully to revive him.

His daughter, Sally Mayhugh, said her father, who had been a street corner singer since his youth, “was doing exactly what he loved to do, and he was surrounded by the people who he loved and who loved him.”

Schiera was one of the individuals involved in reforming La Società di San Giuseppe in the late 1990s. The society had been inactive since 1956. The original organization was one of the first Italian American mutual aid societies in Milwaukee, incorporating on Nov. 7, 1909, according to Mario A. Carini, ICC Historian.

Schiera became president of La Società di San Giuseppe succeeding Joseph Balistrieri, who died on Oct. 25, 2010.

John Balistrieri, Joseph’s brother, said Schiera was “the ideal candidate to replace my brother. Sam was old enough to remember the traditions of the past and young enough to have an eye to the future.”

Balistrieri said Schiera was well

aware of the customs of the society because of his father, Giuseppe, who was a longtime, dedicated member. Balistrieri cited Schiera for recreating an authentic version of the mourning ribbon worn by the original society members for public displays of grief and remembrance of their forefathers.

Balistrieri added that Schiera was instrumental in bringing in new, young members ensuring the future of the society.

“Sam always had his heart in the right place and did an outstanding job as president. He was an excellent choice to succeed my brother Joe,” Balistrieri said.

Mayhugh said her father was involved as a member of the ICC and a volunteer for the organization’s summer festival, Festa Italiana, since the beginning of both in 1978. For many years, Schiera served as bar manager, in charge of the Miller Oasis and bocce court bars and worked in beer distribution.

Each year, he marched in Festa’s Sunday religious procession with La Società di San Giuseppe and he took pride in doing so, his daughter said. It brought back the joy of his childhood in Milwaukee’s old Third Ward when early Sicilian immigrants had processions to honor patron saints of their hometowns.

The son of immigrants from the Sicilian town of Aspra, Schiera graduated as salutatorian of Milwaukee’s Lincoln High School in 1959 with several academic and athletic prospects. He lettered in several sports, played the trumpet and sang in an a cappella choir while at Lincoln.

became ill and died soon after high school graduation. He went to work to support his family, taking jobs as a bank teller and later a plumber’s apprentice. He worked for about 15 years for a plumbing company where he did electrical and construction jobs as well as plumbing work.

For about the next 25 years, Schiera worked for Milwaukee County, first in hospital grounds maintenance before taking the job as the Director of Grounds and Maintenance at the Milwaukee County Zoo. He oversaw the construction of the penguins exhibit.

His job often entailed leaving his Franklin home in the middle of the night to handle maintenance problems that arose and had the potential to impact the well-being of the animals.

Schiera also oversaw an upgrade to the zoo’s electrical distribution system, which occurred over a three-year period. The new system allowed sidewalk lighting and

power upgrades to handle summer evening events.

Zoo director Chuck Wikenhauser said, “Sam really took this place to heart. He was always a champion for the zoo.”

Schiera married his late wife, Judy (Shaw) on Oct. 30, 1971. Judy also worked for Milwaukee County for more than 20 years and was the Deputy Chief of Staff to the County Executive prior to her retirement in 2001. Judy died on Dec. 13, 2005 at the age of 64.

“My dad was one of extraordinary character,” Mayhugh said.

“We’ve been blessed because of the foundation he’s provided.”

Besides his daughter, Sally (Kyle) Mayhugh, and his fiancé, Patricia Holzhauer, Schiera is survived by his brother, John (Liz), his sisters, Joan Ohn, Josephine (Carl) Marlega and Antoinette (Joe) Block, his grandchildren Giuseppe, Sal, Sofia and Aniela and many other relatives and friends.

Granddaughter of Paul and Rose Iannelli is a collegiate hoops star Valerierose Agnello, the granddaughter of Italian Community Center members Paul and Rose Iannelli, is transferring to Wichita State University after two stellar seasons at Kishwaukee College in Malta, Ill. At Kishwaukee, Agnello was a Women’s Basketball College Association/State Farm AllAmerican this past season. She

averaged 14 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game for the Kougars, who finished fourth in the national junior college Division II tournament.

Agnello is a longtime member of the Festa Regional and Renaissance Dancers, a group that performs regularly at Festa Italiana.

She was a high school basketball standout at Brookfield Central.

Jacob Fischer, grandson of ICC member, speaks at Kiwanis event about charitable club he presides over at his school Jacob Fischer, a seventh grader at Washington School in western Racine County, had the privilege of speaking at the 50th annual Kiwanis Wisconin-Upper Michigan District Convention on Feb. 23 about a charitable club at his school.

Fischer spoke about the Builders Club which he helped to establish last fall and over which he presides. He said, “Builders Club allowed our middle school students to make a huge impact in our school community, our local community of Tichigan, and our nation.”

He noted that the club has conducted a food drive to stock the shelves of the Caldwell Food Pantry, collected nonperishable

food items, games and books for members of the active military, conducted programs to improve the school environment and other activities.

Fischer told the convention attendees that the club is helping an organization called Fire Bells which delivers food and other items to EMTs, firefighters and the victims during big fires in Racine and Walworth counties. The club is doing a relay event for the American Cancer Society.

School officials and a Kiwanis representative were also involved in establishing the club.

Jacob is the son of Scott and Jodi Fischer and the grandson of Italian Community Center member Gino Dentice.

Harrison Balistreri receives SIF scholarship Harrison Balistreri will receive the Frank J. DeSantis Scholarship from the Sons of Italy Foundation at its 25th anniversary National Education and Leadership Awards gala in Washington, D.C. on May 23, report his grandparents Tom and Barbara Balistreri, Italian Community Center members.

Harrison is an honors graduate from Marquette University High School. He was class president both his junior and senior years and was a member of the Italian American Club, Latin Club and several others, was co-captain of the varsity golf team and was featured recently in an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on high school athletes. He is also an Eagle Scout.

The SIF event is the Order Sons of Italy in America signature scholarship and awards event. This year, actor Joe Montegna is serving as host. Among the award honorees are General Colin L. Powell, 65th U.S. Secretary of State; and Sergio Marchione, chairman and chief executive officer of Chrysler Group.

Elise Fritchie displays art works during Gallery Night & Day at ICC

The weekend of Apr. 27-28 was a big one for two members of the Italian Community Center’s 2013 Carnevale Royalty. Carnevale Principessa Gina Loeffelholz and Piccola Principessa Ella Rose Vollbracht performed a dance together at Anita’s Dance Center’s classical ballet recitals at New Berlin West High School.

Gina is a dance instructor at Anita’s and senior member of the studio’s dance company. Ella attends ballet, tap and jazz classes at Anita’s and is part of the Hippity Hopper dance group.

The two performed a ballet number, choreographed by Gina, to the song, “These Moments We Share” from the Disney Princess Tea Party album. The performance

has cemented a long term friendship between the two.

Gina is the daughter of ICC member Rosa Giannotto Loeffelholz and a senior at Muskego High School. Ella is the daughter of ICC members Jeannine and James Vollbracht and granddaughter of ICC members Joanne and Ron Czubek. She is a first grader at Tess Corners Elementary School.

Gina will be giving a final performance at The Pabst Theater on June 7 and 9. She also will be performing at Festa Italiana as a member of Tradizione Vivente, the Italian Dance Group of Milwaukee.

You can also catch Ella at Festa performing with her Hippity Hoppers dance group on the Children’s Stage.

The Italian Community Center welcomed Elise (Ceraso) Fritchie as its featured artist for the Apr. 19-20 presentation of Gallery Night & Day, a quarterly program coordinated by the Historic Third Ward Association and the East Towne Association. June weather in Italy Unlike the first five months of the year when the daily temperatures from northern to southern Italy can differ by 20º to 25º, temperature readings are fairly consistent during the month of June.

In Milan (Lombardy region) and other parts of northern Italy, the average monthly high temperature is 77º and the average low is 55º. There are generally four days of precipitation.

In Rome (Lazio region) and central Italy, the average monthly high temperature is also 77º and the average low is 61º. This area has averaged nine wet days in June.

In Palermo (Sicily region) and other places of southern Italy, 77º is again the average monthly high temperature.

Italian Society and Club News UNICO organizations present scholarships to 16 students The Milwaukee Chapter UNICO National and Milwaukee Ladies of UNICO presented scholarships to 16 area students of Italian descent on Tuesday, May 21. The presentations took place at the annual UNICO Scholarship & Awards Banquet held at the Italian Community Center.

Each organization presented one $2,000 scholarship. The recipients were: Paul A. D’Alessio, a senior at St. Francis High School, receiving the Theodore Mazza Award, and Katherine Clare Loomis of Greendale High School, receiving the Anita Mazza Award.

Pompeii Men sponsoring 31st Super Run/Walk The Pompeii Men’s Club and the Badgerland Striders will team up to stage their 31st annual 5K (3.1 mile) Run / Walk. This year’s event will be held on Wednesday, June 12 in Lake Park.

Pre-registration forms are available at several Milwaukee area running stores or you can download a registration form at www.badgerlandstriders.org/home.htm Race day registration will begin at 5 p.m. in the park’s pavilion and will continue until 6:30 p.m. An entry fee of $25 ($35 after June 1) will entitle each participant to receive the following: entry in the event, a shirt, trophies for top finishers, fruit juice, fresh fruit, beer, and a drawing for prizes.

As always, there will be Italian sausage available for sale at a nominal cost. “You can join the fun by either running or walking the 3.1 mile course. It will be good for you, and at the same time, you will be helping local Milwaukee charities,” said Charles Lazzaro, president of the Pompeii Men’s Club.

The event has averaged 800 participants and has become known as one of Milwaukee’s premier run/walks. “The race’s image and loyal following have been solidified because of the beautiful location, superb post race refreshments, and the committed efforts of over 100 volunteers who make the race day activities proceed smoothly and efficiently,” Lazzaro said.

The Theodore Mazza, Sam J. Balistreri, Tony and Sadie Machi, Italian Studies and Alfred A. Silverman Memorial awards were presentations of the Milwaukee Chapter UNICO National. All awards are administered through the UNICO organizations, except the Italian studies and the Silverman awards which are courtesy of the Albert A. Silverman Foundation.

The high school award recipients were selected by a nonpartisan, non-Italian panel of dignitaries from the Milwaukee area. The Italian studies awardee was chosen by the teaching staff at UWM. The Civic Music Association of Milwaukee selected the Silverman awardee.

Since its inception in 1936, the Milwaukee UNICO scholarship program has steadily expanded. The first year one $250 scholarship was presented. Since then, more than $1.1 million has been awarded to 581 student recipients.

The Milwaukee Ladies of UNICO also presented $500 to the Italian Immersion Program at Milwaukee’s Victory School for the Gifted and Talented. Last year, the Milwaukee Chapter UNICO National did the same.

Mazzei OSIA invites golfers to register for June 23 outing The Filippo Mazzei Greater Milwaukee Lodge of the Order Sons of Italy in America invites golfers to sign up for a shotgun/scramble to be held Sunday, June 23 at Ironwood Golf Course in Sussex. The outing, which serves as a fund-raiser for the organization, will begin at 11 a.m.

Participants will be provided the use of a cart, golf swing analysis by Dick Wallace (a PGA Pro), grilled Italian sandwiches, Italian buffet dinner, entry in a raffle and chances to win prizes. The golf range will also be open for those who want to practice their swing.

The Italian buffet, catered by Mia’s of Waukesha, will be available at approximately 4:30 p.m.

The cost for the program is $110. For those who are interested in the dinner only, the cost is $25.

Italy’s ‘Festa della Repubblica’ is June 2 The Festa della Repubblica is celebrated in Italy each year on June 2. It commemorates the institutional referendum of 1946 when the Italian population was called upon to decide what form of government – monarchy or republic – to give to the country after World War II and the fall of Fascism.

After 85 years of monarchy, with 12,717,923 votes for and 10,719,284 votes against, Italy became a republic, and the monarchs of the House of Savoy were deposed and exiled. It became illegal for any male member of

the family to set foot on Italian soil.

Monarchists argued that the vote was miscounted. These allegations were never proven.

This is one of the most important Italian public holidays which, like July 4 in the United States, celebrates the birth of the modern nation.

A grand military parade is held in central Rome. Many cities mark the holiday with parades and fireworks.

Many businesses and venues, even major attractions, are closed in observance of this day.

Spotlight on Cultural Arts L’Angolo del Poeta Prepared by Barbara Collignon with Italian translation by Roberto Ciampi There is a mortuary statue in the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence unlike any of the other staid, classically sculpted other statues there.

This figure, with his windblown hair and coat, braces against the wind and clutches his coat around him. Almost instinctively one realizes it must represent some Romantic poet out in the bitter elements. It represents, in fact, Ugo Foscolo, who was born in 1778 on the island of Zakynthos of an impoverished Venetian nobleman physician and a Greek mother.

When Foscolo was 10, his father died and the family moved to Venice. He studied at the University of Padua and found literary fame early at the tender age of 19 with a tragedy called “Tieste.”

His novel, Ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis (1798), reflects the influence of “Werther Fever” prevalent throughout Europe after Goethe published The Sorrows of Young Werther. Overly sensitive and melancholy, Werther suffers mentally and commits suicide.

Foscolo’s melancholy story was rooted in fact on the suicide of Jacopo Ortis, a young student of Padua, who did exist and did, in fact, kill himself as Foscolo described. But his novel was also inspired by political events. Foscolo was greatly shocked and disappointed by the Treaty of Campoformio (1797) by which Napoleon handed Venice over to the Austrians. The topic of suicide appealed to young Italian patriots as it did to their contemporaries in Europe.

He is also known for Dei sepolcri and other hauntingly beautiful works of poetry. He died at the age of 49 in Cheswick, England where his tomb remains with the inscription “wearied citizen poet”. His remains, however, were brought to Florence 44 years after his death upon the request of the King of Italy. Now he lies near the monuments of Machiavelli, Michelangelo and Galileo in the church of Santa Croce, the pantheon of Italian glory that he celeUgo Foscolo

Opera Topics by Angelo Castronovo Recently, I talked about famous composers and conductors and have decided there is another name that must be included in the list of conductors. It is Tullio Serafin, artistic director of the Rome Opera from 1934 to 1943. He was also closely associated with La Scala, Milan and New York’s Metropolitan Opera.

Serafin, who was born in 1878 and died in 1968, was considered to be among the finest of Italian conductors of his era. As well as being

a coach and supporter of upcoming young singers, he conducted the first performances of Montemezzi’s L’Amore dei Tre Re and Hanson’s Merry Mount among a number of other prominent operas.

Return to last month’s column for a moment. While reviewing operas done by twos and threes, including Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci and Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, Puccini’s and Leoncavallo’s respective versions of La Bohème and Puccini’s Il Trittico, I mentioned briefly the rare occurrence of two Bohèmes being performed in the same week on the same night in New York City. The date of this memorable event was Jan. 26, 1910.

New York’s opera scene was greatly enhanced with the debut of Oscar Hammerstein’s Manhattan Opera in December 1906, featuring tenor Alessandro Bonci in Bellini’s I Puritani. Hammerstein, a former tobacco magnate turned opera impresario, became the man who lost no opportunity to be “one up” on the Met by taking on opportunities that the Met chose to turn down.

So it was at the Manhattan

Opera that American opera-goers first heard Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande and Charpentier’s Louise, both starring Mary Garden.

Hammerstein secured another coup by persuading Australian soprano Nellie Melba to make her first American appearance in what has been described as “...one of the most electrifying in New York musical history.”

And not resting for long on his laurels, Hammerstein brought Luisa Tetrazzini and John McCormack to the Manhattan in 1909.

This brings me to my promise to relate the unusual tale of the two Bohèmes in the same week and on the same evening.

Hammerstein heard of the Met’s plans for an upcoming performance of that opera with Enrico Caruso and Geraldine Farrar and came up with an amazing inspiration – scheduling his own performance of Bohème with Lina Cavalieri and John McCormack. It was an absolute delight for New York opera fans – some even bought tickets for both Bohèmes. Sadly, the Manhattan Opera held forth for only four seasons.

Contradictions abound in life and nowhere is this truer than in the arts and, of course, in opera.

Most puzzling is the case of one of the great vocal composers in history who was also the most ill-fated when it came to the operas he wrote.

Franz Schubert wrote 14 operas, but only three of them were performed during his lifetime, due mainly to poor libretti. Many were left unfinished. His finest work was considered to be the three act Fierrabras which is set in Charlemagne’s time. It is a story of love and chivalry during the Moorish Wars. Two of Schubert’s most famous compositions are “Serenade” and the memorable, frequently performed “Ave Maria.”

And in the category of unusual accomplishments must be that of Carlo Bergonzi’s feat of recording all of Verdi’s tenor arias in the 1950s. Bergonzi, a singer of great taste and style, started his career as a baritone and retrained himself as a tenor midway through his career.

Victory School’s Italian Immersion Program report on spring activities The pre-kindergarten class has been learning about, “Going green, keeping our planet clean.” Vocabulary words include: mondo, terra, fiori, vermi, composto, foglie, farfalla, uovo, bruco e pupa. The students are raising Pink Lady Butterflies and soon they will emerge! Before the end of the year, the class will plant sunflower seeds in a flat of prepared potting soil, measure their growth and eat them in a salad.

In K5 literacy, students are learning all about “mezzi di trasporto!” The students are making books about transportation and learning to read Italian words such as “macchina” and “autobus.”

They are also playing many fun games and learning a new song!

In the K5 math, students have just finished up a unit all about money. K5 students are learning how to identify quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. They add money together to pay for books at a pretend bookstore and to buy groceries at the pretend grocery store.

They are learning to subtract money to find change, too. It is really exciting for them to learn about money because it is something that is real and tangible.

Ms. Zizzo and many of the Italian teachers are either current members or alumni of AmeriCorps and have collaborated on various service learning projects at Victory.

The first graders in Ms. Zizzo’s class have been implementing a service-learning project focused on health and nutrition. Students spent time researching different ways to stay healthy and then became advocates for healthy living by creating public service announcements and advertisements that were shared with the school community. A guest speaker from the UW-Extension’s Nutrition Education Program and Victory’s Nurse Hanson visited to share tips on how to stay healthy. Students then chose healthy snacks to prepare for the “Girls on the Run” team and the attendance winners for the month of March. Congratulations to the first graders who worked so hard and are well on their way to being responsible global citizens.

April was a “science-tastic” month for the third grade students. The students spent a significant part of the month creating, testing, predicting and observing for the school science fair. Over the course of three weeks, students compared three groups of plants that were fed different amounts of fertilizer. Ultimately, the conclusion most students made was that the food a plant makes for itself through the process of photosynthesis is better than using loads of fertilizer to feed a plant. Students worked in pairs to create science boards that displayed their hypotheses, observations, results and conclusions.

Third grade students also hosted an ecosystem gallery walk in order to display and explain their ecosystem posters and reports. Teachers and students from other classrooms were invited to check out student created exhibits, which students set up throughout the room. Visitors from many grade levels came and students had an opportunity to display their presentational and oratory skills. The event helped create a sense of community throughout the classroom.

Using those avenues, we want to develop a way to reach out to our membership to inform you about upcoming events organized by the Italian Community Center, such as Il Grande Carnevale, A Taste of Italy and Festa Italiana.

We can even email you a copy of The Italian Times.

When the ICC hosts wine tastings, musical events and cooking classes, it would be helpful to everyone involved to be able to send an e-mail blast or a cell phone text blast to ICC members and as many nonmembers as possible. Right now, committee chairs and event planners here don’t always know what advertising options are available to them and how to reach out to you. Without spending a ton of money, we just aren’t sure how to let the people out there know about upcoming events at the ICC. ICC members can be placed on an e-mail list and a

cell phone list when they sign up for or renew their membership. Our application includes a place for your e-mail address and cell phone number.

Our membership contact list is extremely private, and we will continue to keep it that way. We do not distribute our address, phone or e-mail lists to anyone. Rest assured your contact information will be retained by the ICC and only the ICC, and you will only be sent messages on a limited basis.

New logo designed for 36th Festa

By Jessica Vollrath Festa Italiana is getting a face lift - starting with a new logo! Festa logos of the past have been replaced with a more contemporary design that reflects a festival both rich in tradition and one that is poised for success in the future. The fresh, modern look represents Festa as it is today - a festival that attracts all ages.

In the spring of 2013, Festa’s marketing team made up of Vollrath Associates (public relations), Propeller (media planning) and GT Creative (creative) put their minds together to modernize the Festa brand. The new logo takes into account what makes Festa unique and the special significance it holds in the Italian community. Situated above sleek typefaces, the logo proudly displaces the hallmarks of Festa - the Italian flag celebrating Italian tradition, a wine bottle symbolizing the presence of wine in the culture’s rich history and a fork representing a people passionate about food and family. The vibrant colors and contemporary images come together seamlessly to tell the modern story of Milwaukee’s oldest ethnic festival.

The logo also sets the stage for more exciting creative to come as we near the 36th annual Festa Italiana! The upcoming marketing campaign will incorporate everything that the Milwaukee community has come to know and love about Festa - delicious food, Italian fun for the entire family and, of course, fireworks!

Festa Italiana will take place Friday, July 19 through Sunday, July 21 at Henry W. Maier Festival Park (Summerfest grounds).
