Cirque Italia coming to ICC’s free Courtyard ICC grounds June 3-5 Music Series gets

underway on June 9

Cirque Italia – the first traveling water circus in the United States – will be making a return visit to the Italian Community Center grounds, Friday, June 3 through Sunday, June 5. Tickets for Cirque Italia’s amazing and magical shows are available now. Details on obtaining tickets and the shows can be found inside this issue. A story with photos appears on page 12. by Thomas Hemman Times Editor The wait is nearly over for Milwaukee’s favorite free weeknight outdoor music series. We’re talking about the Italian Community Center’s 2016 Courtyard Music Series, presented by The Bartolotta Restaurants. The 17th season will get underway on Thursday, June 9.

The series opens with one of the longtime favorite good-time rock and roll bands, the Oldies But Goodies Spectacular. Like every show in the four-month long series, this one begins at 6:30 p.m. in the ICC’s beautiful and spacious courtyard.

Whether you are a fan of traditional or contemporary jazz, the big band sound, any of the genres of blues or rock and roll, the ICC has something for you this summer in the Courtyard Music Series.

Best of all, every show is offered with no cover charge. Parking is also free.

The series is scheduled Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights through the end of August. The shows are consolidated into two nights – Tuesdays and Thursdays – in September.

Every night that Mother Nature cooperates, the shows will go on in the courtyard, which is next to Cafe La Scala. The restaurant will have its staff on duty from 5 p.m. each night to take food and beverage orders either indoors or outdoors.

When Mother Nature delivers rain or cold temperatures, the shows are moved indoors to the Festa Ballroom, which is on the other side of Cafe La Scala.

While being a longtime sponsor of Festa Italiana, this year marks the first for Bartolotta Restaurants as the presenting sponsor of the Courtyard series.

Tuscan flag-throwing group to return to Festa

by Thomas Hemman Times Editor If you were impressed with acrobatics, athleticism, synchronized marches and pageantry of the Sbandieratori dei Borghi e Sestieri Fiorentini at last year’s Festa Italiana, you will have chances to see them perform again this year.

The flag-throwing troupe, hailing from Figline Valdarno in the Florence province of Tuscany, was founded in 1965. Its debut performance in Milwaukee came at Festa Italiana 2015 as part of the unit’s 50th anniversary celebration.

This year, you will be able to witness Sbandieratori dei Borghi e Sestieri Fiorentini on the T.J. Bartolotta Sports Court at 6:30 p.m., Friday, July 22 and Saturday, July 23, and 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 24.

The flag throwers will also perform at various intervals in open locations on the Festa grounds, in the parade on Saturday and Sunday, and participate in the Sunday procession.

Flag throwing has a long history in Italy, dating back to the 11th century when flag throwers accompanied armies throughout central and northern Italy. Since soldiers had no uniforms, the flag was the sole element of recognition, a source of civic pride and a useful tool for communication between army units. By popular demand, the Cucina Showcase is hosting the third annual Chef’s Choice Recipe Contest, taking place in the Cucina Showcase on Saturday, July 23.

This year, we have made some new and exciting changes, reports Cucina Showcase Manager Marie Andaloro Lieber. Contestants can bring their favorite baked good, including pie, cookies, cake or bread, to the Cucina Showcase on July 23 between 1 and 4 p.m.

The Italian Community Center’s 21st annual “A Taste of Italy” on Sunday, Apr. 17 proved to be an enjoyable and successful event. All of this is due to the magnificent effort put forth by so many individuals, societies, clubs, donors and the ICC staff.

A net profit of $19,766.89 resulted. These funds will go for repair and re-carpeting of the bocce courts.

With so many people, groups and businesses participating, it’s impossible to thank everyone individually. I can assure you, however, that this fundraising event could not have been done with the high degree of success without you. All of your efforts are truly appreciated.

I want to extend a big thank you to ICC Business Manager Laurie Bisesi, Chefs Roberto Garcia and Gustavo Teran and their staff, Times Editor Tom Hemman and ICC Executive Administrative Assistant Constance Palmer.

Rev. Mike Hammer, founder and director of Milwaukee Archdiocese AIDS Ministry, to be main celebrant of Festa Italiana Mass

by Thomas Hemman Times Editor Rev. Mike Hammer, in his 47th year as a priest in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, has accepted the invitation from the Festa Italiana Mass and Procession Committee to be the main celebrant of the 2016 Festa Mass on the Marcus Amphitheater on Sunday, July 24.

Members of the Italian Community Center and the various local Italian organizations and societies might know him as an assistant priest at St. John’s Cathedral and, more recently, Three Women and Old St. Mary’s. Others know Fr. Mike as the co-chaplain of the Pompeii Women’s Club.

People who attended the ICC’s 2016 Carnevale may remember that he offered the invocation.

Those who came to the organization’s St. Joseph’s Day Luncheon in 2015 should recall him blessing the St. Joseph’s altar and all in attendance with Holy Water.

Still, several hundred more of God’s children know Fr. Mike for a completely different reason.

On a visit at a Catholic hospice in 1983, he asked the Sister in charge whether the facility had ever admitted an AIDS patient.

She directed him to two young men, who seldom had visitors.

It was at that moment that Fr. Mike began an AIDS ministry. It became his calling.

“With the AIDS epidemic, I have truly witnessed the power of love,”

he said. “Because of the devastating nature of AIDS, I have seen families overcome huge differences and turn to love and support one another.”

He added, “Initially, I was fortunate to be supported by Archbishop Rembert Weakland – who, at the time, was co-founder – along with Karen Lamb, of MAP (Milwaukee AIDS Project, later ARCW, the Resource Center of AIDS Wisconsin).”

In the early years, before treatment could prolong the lives of AIDS patients, Hammer attended two to three funerals a week. That only strengthened his resolve to be

an advocate for those impacted by the virus.

As the director of Catholic AIDS Ministry of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, Hammer has supported and counseled hundreds of people who have confronted AIDS in their lives. “This ministry focused my view of the Church, deepened my need for prayer, and challenged my cock-eyed optimism to move into the unknown,” Hammer said. “It is a challenge to get people to be open, accepting and loving of parishioners with AIDS, but I know that God wants us to be present.”

Hammer began his service in the Milwaukee Archdiocese as an assistant priest at St. Veronica Parish in the Bay View area, followed by St. Bernadette on the city’s northwest side.

He went on to co-coordinate the Office of Parish Councils with Marliss Rodgers. Together, they published Parish Council Manuals that were used in at least 35 diocese in the United States and Canada.

During the same period, Hammer held various offices for Padicon, the National Organization for Parish and Diocesan Councils.

“This was a marvelous opportunity to see the church at work throughout the United States,” he said. “I could give a keynote speech one day, and the next day, tour the city and parishes at work. Promoting clergy-lay team leadership has been one of the great joys of my

priesthood.”

This was followed by a several year stint in the Office of Combined Collections.

Next came his inner call to serve the HIV-AIDS community. “It has spanned those painful early years with several hundred funerals to the change brought about by the famous cocktail drugs,” Hammer said. “Throughout these years, I have been blessed to be an assisting priest at the Cathedral and also at Three Holy Women and Old St. Mary’s.”

For 10 years, he was the celebrant of Sunday Mass on Channel 6 in Milwaukee. To this day, he says, “The grace of that experience is how many viewers continue to keep me in their prayers.”

Hammer said he most enjoys celebrating Mass and preaching.

He will get that opportunity before a large crowd at Festa Italiana on Sunday, July 24 at 11 a.m.

Donations sought for Festa Mass

The Festa Italiana Mass and Procession Committee is seeking donations to offset the cost of the celebration of our Mass and procession on Sunday, July 24.

“We’re extremely grateful and appreciative of all the support we have received from the sponsors of the Mass and procession over the last several years,” said committee co-chairs Sister Marie Louise Balestrieri and Sal Lo Coco. “It is a very costly undertaking to convert the Marcus Amphitheater from a concert venue into a place of worship.”

“For the last several years, a number of people have stepped for-

ward with individual donations to help defray those costs, and we hope that people will be similarly moved this year,” the co-chairs said.

Every year, the overnight transformation of the Amphitheater is accomplished successfully by the Mass Committee, as evidenced by comments received on a regular basis from people – including visiting clergy – who attend the Mass for the first time.

The Festa Italiana Mass and Procession Committee welcomes and invites singers to join their voices to this year’s Festa Choir. The choir will rehearse at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 5400 W. Washington Blvd., Milwaukee.

Rehearsals will last two hours, and music will be provided. Some hymns will be sung in Italian and Latin, but no previous knowledge of either language is necessary as language coaching is provided.

The mixed choir is open to all voice parts – soprano, alto, tenor and bass. No auditions are necessary. However, previous choral experience is recommended.

Maestro Michael Kamenski requests that singers participate in at least four rehearsals including a dress rehearsmandatory al. Rehearsal dates are as follows: Thursday, July 14, 7 p.m.; Saturday, July 16, 8:30 a.m.; Monday, July 18, 7 p.m.; Tuesday, July 19, 7 p.m.; and a dress rehearsal Wednesday July 20, 7 p.m.

Call put out for Festa Mass ushers

Ted Catalano, Mass & Procession Committee member and ushers manager, has issued a call for at least 15 new ushers to step up and volunteer for this year’s Festa Italiana Mass on Sunday, July 24.

To be an usher, you must be at least 16 years old. The only other requirement is that you attend a brief instructional at the Italian meeting Community Center on Monday, July 18 at 7 p.m. At that time, information on the duties of an usher during the Mass and the procession, which follows the Mass, will be discussed.

Catalano requests that new ushers sign up with him early and then follow through on their commitment. To volunteer as an usher or for more information, call Catalano at 414-305-9769.

At least 55 ushers are needed every year for the Mass, which has drawn up to 15,000 people.

Catalano said he has about 40 dedicated ushers who show up automatically each year.

A message from Giuseppe Vella, Italian Community Center President

By the time you read this, our 39th annual Festa Italiana will be less than two months away. The dates again are Friday, July 22 through Sunday, July 24 on the Summerfest grounds.

For months now, we have been working diligently to present a truly entertaining, culturally accurate and financially successful Festa.

I hope everyone who is reading this message is willing to pitch in through volunteering, attending and promoting the festival.

For the most part, all of the pieces are in place. The entertainment lineup is set. The food vendors have been chosen and are ready to go. The cultural activities are being finalized.

We’re bringing back the Sbandieratori dei Borghi e Sestieri Fiorentini, the amazing flag-throw-

ing troupe from Figline Valdarno in the Florence province of Tuscany, Italy. Our free carnival rides are back. The gondolas will be available for people who want to enjoy the Venetian experience.

The schedule of activities for the Cucina Showcase – this year, located in the same area as our cultural, arts and religious exhibits – is being completed. We will have our grand parade on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Returning, as well, are the cannoli-eating contest, the Sunday bocce tournament, the Italian Idol contest, the futsal tournament, the marketplace, the kids play zone, nightly Bartolotta fireworks and much more.

We are looking for members to support the special Sunday night concert by the young singing sensation Jackie Evancho at the BMO Harris Pavilion.

The essence of Festa has always been and will continue to be the Sunday Mass and procession. Fr. Mike Hammer, whom many of you know, will serve as the Main Celebrant.

On the cultural side, we’re bringing back to Festa a replica of the Trevi Fountain of Rome, a replica of the Roman Coliseum, our Venetian bell tower, the David statue and Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Part of our piazza on the north end will include the Pompeii Church exhibit, the Italian American vintage photo display, the fine arts tent, the Italian cinema tent, the Italian regional tent and the genealogy display.

Celebrating la famiglia (family), la cultura (culture) and all things Italian, La Grande Parata della Festa Italiana will return on Saturday, July 23 and July 24, starting at 5 p.m. on the north end of the grounds.

Featuring characters and representations from The Story of Pinocchio, Topo Gigio, Italian folk dancing groups, flag throwers from Italy, the UW Marching Band, floats, jugglers, a drum line, many, many children and much more, the parade will wind through the grounds to the south end.

Children will toss out candy, balls, beads and other small trinkets to the crowd. It will be color-

ful, entertaining and fill the air with Italian music.

Led by La Banda Siciliana di Chicago (Sicilian Band of Chicago), the parade will salute Pinocchio on a mobile filled with children and in costume joined by the Blue Fairy and Topo Gigio, the Italian mouse.

The folk dance groups include Tradizione Vivente: the Italian Dance Group of Milwaukee, I Bei Bambini: Children’s Italian Dance Group, and the Italian Regional & Renaissance Dancers. There will be a Sicilian carretto and stunning Italian cars carrying the Italian Community Center’s Royalty of Carnevale 2016.

Sestieri, the phenomenal flagthrowing unit from Figline Valdarno, Italy, will astound parade viewers as they twirl and toss their flags, soaring high in the air.

“We hope to have many children in Venetian masks and in costumes,” said Gina Jorgensen, Parade Manager. “We are waiting confirmation from the Madison Area Jugglers, who always entertain the crowd with their expertise and flair. Since it’s the peak of

summer, beach balls will be tossed.

Prizes and candy will be thrown to be collected by our young parade watchers.”

She added, “The parade will be colorful, entertaining and will fill the air with Italian music.”

Festa Parade: Calling all children

by Gina Jorgensen Festa Parade Manager Not only do we invite all children to march in La Grande Parata della Festa Italiana wearing either an Italian costume or clown costume, but we are presenting new, really fun opportunities for children to participate. Parents, you provide your kids, we provide the masks. We are looking for 20 children to walk the parade wearing feathered Carnevale masks.

Festa Italiana is just around the corner, so there is no better time to get ready than now. Search online for a colorful clown costume or an Italian costume. Search the shops.

Tradizione Vivente looking for new dancers Come be a part of our famiglia

Ciao! Tradizione Vivente, the Italian Dance Group of Milwaukee, is looking for new members to join the dance group. This Italian folk dance group, which has been in existence for more than 60 years, strives to preserve the Italian culture through folk dancing, music, costumes, and a genuine love for all things Italian.

It is a volunteer group comprised of young men and women of all ages and backgrounds. The group practices weekly on Tuesday nights at 7:15 at the Italian Community Center and performs a variety of dances originating from various parts of Italy.

Some of its past performances include Festa Italiana, Holiday Folk Fair, Taste of Italy and other ICC events, weddings, baptisms, and folk art conferences throughout

the country.

At this time. the group is especially seeking male members to join as several members have left for other activities or to attend college.

No experience is necessary as the dance directors will instruct you in everything you need to know. You do not need to be of Italian descent but have a commitment to attend practices and interest in learning new dances. Having fun with a close knit group of people is definitely required.

‘Vince Lombardi Walk/Run to Tackle Cancer’ coming to Festa Italiana 2016

Festa Italiana officials are proud to announce that the 29th annual Milwaukee “Vince Lombardi Walk/Run to Tackle Cancer” will be held for the first time at Festa.

The 3K walk and 5K run, which support local cancer care and research initiatives, will be Saturday, July 23 and will celebrate Coach Lombardi’s Italian heritage.

All proceeds from the Lombardi Walk/Run to Tackle Cancer support local Aurora Cancer Care programs and are eligible for a 50% match from the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation.

“We are thrilled to bring the memory and legacy of Lombardi,

the Green Bay Packer and NFL legend to Milwaukee’s original ethnic festival,” said Giuseppe Vella, president of the Italian Community Center and general chairperson of Festa Italiana. “We can’t imagine a better partnership that not only commemorates Vince Lombardi’s strong Italian roots, but also fights for an extremely worthy cause.”

Early registration for the Walk/Run is $30 per adult runner ($35 after June 23) and $25 for adult walkers ($30 after June 23).

For children, ages 3-12, the registration fee for the 3K walk is $15.

Children, age 2 and younger, are free. Participating runners and walkers receive free admission into

Festa Italiana. There will be $5 parking in the ICC parking lot from 6:30 to 10 a.m. the day of the event.

Parking will be $10 after 10 a.m.

Green Bay Packers alumni Santana Dotson and Jerry Kramer will be in attendance during the Walk/Run. The schedule for the 2016 Vince Lombardi Walk/Run to Tackle Cancer at Festa Italiana is as follows: • 7:30 a.m. – Registration opens (North Gate).

• 9:30 a.m. – Run begins.

• 10:00 a.m. – Walk begins.

• 11:00 a.m. – Noon – Post walk/run festivities at the Festa Stage • 11:30 a.m. – Run awards, 50/50 raffle, Kessler’s Diamond Quarterback Awards • Noon – 2:00 p.m. – Lombardi Food Hour. 10% of each purchase will benefit the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation.

Festa officials encourage Walk/Run participants to attend the Sunday Mass, at which there will be a special Lombardi-style blessing for those suffering with cancer, the families of cancer patients and those who have lost loved ones to cancer.

Then get your advance admission tickets now. Festa officials have kept the price for an advance admission ticket for the 2016 festival the same as the last four years – just $10. That’s a $3 saving over the gate admission price.

The 39th annual Festa is Friday, July 22 through Sunday, July 24 at Henry W. Maier Festival Park (Summerfest grounds).

The easiest way to order advance tickets – good for admission any of the three days – is to go to http://FestaItaliana.com and purchase them with a credit card.

Once on the website, go to the “Ticket” link, follow the instructions and print your order. These online ticket-purchasing opportunities will be available through Thursday, July 21.

There are three other ways you can get your advance tickets.

• Stop in at the Festa Italiana office at the Italian Community

Center, 631 E. Chicago St., Milwaukee, during regular business hours (7 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday). Advance tickets will be sold at the ICC through July 21.

• Call the ICC at 414-223-2180 and have your credit card ready.

Your tickets will be mailed to you.

This offer ends Monday, July 11 to allow staff the time that is necessary to process all of the orders.

• You can also use the form that accompanies this article to order your advance admission tickets.

Persons using the advance ticket order form must have their envelope postmarked by July 11.

As always, children 12 and younger are admitted to Festa for free when accompanied by an adult. No special ticket is needed for any of the entertainments acts in this year’s lineup.

Could you be Festa Italiana’s 2016 ‘Italian Idol’?

Think you have the vocal chops to be this year’s Italian Idol?

One of Festa Italiana’s most popular features – the Italian Idol competition – is back again this year on the Cucina Showcase Stage on the Summerfest grounds, Friday, July 22 through Sunday, July 24.

Presented by WFA Asset Management Corporation (Nick Enea, President) and supporting sponsor R&R Insurance (Jeff Thiel, Account Executive), Italian Idol is an amateur singing contest featuring all genres of music.

Contestants must be 14 years of age and have vocal ability.

On-site registration begins on Friday and Saturday, at 6 p.m., and will continue until there are 16 registered contestants for that evening’s show. At the time of registration, competitors will select their songs to perform from the extensive karaoke repertoire of Kim Marie and will compete in random order.

A panel of judges will select four finalists and an alternate from the Friday and Saturday shows. These finalists will receive return tickets to Festa Italiana to compete for the cash prizes at the Sunday evening show.

The eight finalists will sing for a chance to win $1,000 in cash prizes on Sunday night. This year, the prizes are: $500 for first prize,

$300 for second prize and $200 for third prize.

In the Sunday show, finalists will perform two songs. The first song will be of the contestant’s own choosing. The second song will be a portion of an Italian song selected by the organizers of the competition. “Competitors are encouraged to bring friends and family to show their support.

Audience reaction has an impact on the judges’ scoring”, says Andrew Etier, Italian Idol comanager.

Italian Idol has always provided fun, entertainment, and lots of excitement. Serving as the show’s emcee since its beginning, Sandy Winard looks forward to another great competition, “Every year, we have more people wanting to compete in Italian Idol, and many audience members from the Friday and Saturday shows return for the Sunday show to cheer on their favorite.” Winard added, “I’m always as excited as everyone else when I’m handed the list of winners to announce.”

Grace Shoplas, longtime coordinator of children’s programs at the ICC and Festa, dies at age of 86

by Thomas Hemman Times Editor For 30 years, Grace (Cefalu) Shoplas was the coordinator of children’s programs at Festa Italiana.

She also initiated highly memorable activities for youngsters at the Italian Community Center starting in 1979 before relinquishing the lead role in 1992.

The retired Milwaukee Public Schools teacher, who always put children first, died Apr. 15 at the age of 86. In an interview appearing in the May 2003 issue of The Italian Times, she had this to say to parents: “Try to keep a close-knit family together and be interested in what your children do. Stand by their side. They are our future.”

That statement was made in an article announcing that Grace was chosen as the 10th recipient of the ICC’s highest honor, the Theodore Mazza Community Service Award.

The award was presented to her on May 17, 2003.

Grace was an elementary teacher at Robert M. LaFollette and Ralph Waldo Emerson schools in Milwaukee from 1953 to 1992.

She always wanted to be a teacher, even from the time she was known by her maiden name, Grace Cefalu.

In 1953, she graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a degree in elementary education. Later that year, she married Harry G. Shoplas, a music teacher in the Elmbrook School District.

Harry died in 2001.

In her role as chairperson of children’s programs at the ICC, Grace coordinated the annual funfilled Easter and Christmas parties, as well as Halloween parties for kids.

For several years, she coordinated the children’s parade that was part of the ICC’s celebration of Il Grande Carnevale, a pre-Lenten costume and mask ball.

Beginning in 1979, she organized the Children’s Stage and youth-related programs at Festa Italiana. Some of the most memorable activities were the Youth Talent Show, held every year on the Saturday of Festa on the Children’s Stage, and the Children’s Costume Pageant, often taking place on the Pabst Stage on Sunday. Other eventful activities for the kids included an Italian picnic, Italian dancing, face painting, and art contests where all the children were winners. She led the children who walked in the Sunday procession.

In a story published in The Italian Times in the 1991 Festa issue, Grace said the major reason why she chose to work with children in the Italian American community was “to bring them knowledge and understanding of their heritage and to create ethnic pride.”

It should be noted that everything Grace did at the ICC or Festa was with the help of her sisters – Dorothy Haller, Josephine Pawlak and “Mother Goose” Mary Cefalu – all whom died before Grace. How many of you remember Mary Cefalu dressing up as Mother Goose?

“I couldn’t have done it without my sisters,” Grace said. “I had them working with me side by side

for every event, every occasion that has ever occurred,” she said in the 2003 interview.

She also noted the enthusiastic involvement of her daughter, Michelle, her niece, Lucy Polczynski, and her husband, Frank, and her late brother, Sam Cefalu, all of whom lent assistance and support in her endeavors.

Susie (DeSanctis) Christiansen had this to say about Grace in an article that appeared in the Festa 2007 issue, “Throughout the years, Grace celebrated youth and encouraged children to participate and shine at our festival. Many people at the ICC understand the need to

involve and support our children, to create a future for our children, to create for our Community Center – Grace has made it happen through years of hard work and a lot of patience.

“For 30 years, she lovingly gathered children together and showcased their talent, and takes with her the satisfaction of having created memories for thousands of children. Today, many young adults carry with them fond memories of talent shows and pageants, dancers and musicians, face painting and arts and crafts, and Mother Goose and Bingo the Magical Clown.

“We are fortunate to have had someone so selfless provide our children with a colorful, wholesome place to celebrate youth, culture, talent and Italia.”

In 1983, Grace joined two late ICC presidents and former MPS teachers – Sam Ceraso and Mario A. Carini – in organizing an inservice program for MPS teachers that dealt with Italian traditions.

The program, which was held at the former ICC on Hackett Ave., Milwaukee, was capped off by the staging of a traditional Italian wedding.

Grace served on the ICC Board as a director-at-large from 1981 to 1986. She was the chairperson of the organization’s New Year Eve parties in 1985, 1986 and 1987.

Over the years, Grace was active in her school’s Parent Teacher Association, Girl Scouts of America, Special Olympics and other community programs. She was involved in BAABES (Beginning Alcohol and Addiction Basic Education Studies), a program sponsored by MPS to

educate staff members on alcohol and substance abuse. In 1998, she was the co-chair of Special Olympics for MPS. Grace was not only a charter member of the ICC but a longtime member of the Milwaukee Ladies of UNICO. In 1991, she received a recognition award from the Milwaukee Chapter UNICO National and the Ladies of UNICO. That same year, she was named “Italian Person of the Year” by the Fraternal Order of Eagles Luncheon Club.

She was listed in the first edition of Who’s Who Among Italian Americans, published by the National Italian American Foundation.

Grace is survived by her daughter, Michelle, her grandchildren, Christopher Rodriguez, Franchesca Rodriguez, Cassandra Kwiatkowski and Chris Babcock, other relatives and friends.

A memorial mass is planned at St. Rita Catholic Church on Saturday, June 4 at 10:30 a.m.

Attorney William A. Jennaro, a former Milwaukee County judge and past president of the Italian Community Center, was chosen twice as an award recipient in the 2016 Wisconsin Best Lawyers publication.

Recipients are selected based on their particularly high level of peer recognition.

Jennaro was chosen “best lawyer” by his peers in the categories of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution – mediation and arbitration.

He is of counsel to the Milwaukee law firm Davis Kuelthau.

Over the course of the years, Jennaro has won numerous awards and recognitions including the 2012 “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Milwaukee Bar Association.

From 1968 to 1970, Jennaro was a Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney serving under David Cannon and E. Michael McCann. Jennaro established and administered the public defender program at the Children’s Court Division.

He went on to serve as a Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge for 12 years. In 1984, he began his service as a reserve circuit court judge upon assignment by the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Since 1984, Jennaro has worked as an attorney specializing as a mediator in the process of alternative dispute resolution.

In 2009 and 2010, he was named “best mediator” in the State of Wisconsin in a statewide poll of attorneys and judges by the Wisconsin Law Journal. He has been chosen as an award recipient in the Best Lawyers publication multiple occasions since 1998.

A 1968 graduate of the Marquette University Law School, Jennaro is a past president of the Milwaukee Bar Association and a member of a number of law-related organizations.

He served as president of the ICC during the 1994-95 term and had held other positions on the ICC Board before then. He has twice served as the general chairman of Festa Italiana. For the last 18 years, he has chaired Festa VIP Day program for the disabled of

the community. This year’s Festa will mark his fifth year as manager of gondola operations.

He and his wife, Rita, have been members of the ICC since its inception in 1978.

ICC offers photo ID parking pass to members during summer festival season

The Italian Community Center is offering its members a chance to substantially save on parking costs during the summer festival season, June through September.

A new photo identification parking pass is available to members for a one-time price of $50.

This pass will be valid for all the lakefront festivals, including Festa Italiana, in 2016.

To obtain the pass, all a member needs to do is stop in at the front desk at the ICC office between 2 and 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, present your membership card and have your picture taken. The $50 payment is

due at this time. The photo ID parking passes will be issued afterwards.

Over the course of the summer, members can save significantly on parking fees by having the pass.

Summerfest daily parking is normally $20 per vehicle (sometimes $25) and daily parking for the other festivals is normally $10.

The privilege to use the ICC issued photo parking is based on lot availability. If the lot is full or in use for another event, you will not be able to enter.

This parking pass offer is available to members of the ICC only. It is not open to the general public.

Festa Patrol looking for volunteers

Ralph Busalacchi, manager of the Festa Patrol, is seeking volunteers to serve on his crew during Festa Italiana, July 22-24.

Volunteers on the Festa Patrol serve as first responders to a variety of situations on the festival grounds, ranging from security and first aid to lost children. They

strive to keep order along parade and procession routes and work to ensure that Festa’s guests experience a pleasant and safe family event.

Janet Corona is Pompeii Women’s Club ‘Angel of the Year’

Women’s Club Pompeii President Pat Consolazione presented the organization’s annual “Angel of the Year” award to its recording secretary, Janet Corona, at its April 27 general meeting/dinner.

Janet’s minutes are always timely and informative. She is a willing worker and a pleasure to have on the board. One of her skills is ice skating with a women’s team that has won medals in recent years. Club members congratulated Janet for all of her achievements.

Our 2016 Angel will continue the tradition of placing the crown on the Blessed Virgin statue at the club’s May Crowning Dinner on Wednesday, May 25 at the Italian Community Center.

The club wishes to extend its congratulations to Josephine Ninfo, who has been honored by the Ladies of UNICO with that organization’s Star Award on May 17.

Bernice Sparacino, longtime ICC member, dies at age of 89

Bernice M. Sparacino, a longtime Italian Community Center member and volunteer for Festa Italiana’s Security Patrol, died Feb. 14 at the age of 89. Her husband, Tony, who died on Jan. 7, 2015, was a co-manager of Festa’s Security Patrol.

Bernice was a charter member of Whitnall Park Lutheran Church and served the City of West Allis during elections as a poll worker.

According to family members, she enjoyed feeding the world with the

delicious food she made and spent many days tending to her garden.

For many summers, she worked at the Wisconsin State Fair selling Icelandic wool sweaters. To her credit, Bernice sold many of those sweaters even on the hottest and most humid days.

She is survived by her sons and their wives, Terry (Patty), Mike (Pam), and Mark (Margaret), 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson, other relatives and friends.

Those members who wish to pick up their tickets in person can stop in at the ICC office reception desk weekdays between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Be sure to bring your current membership card with you. You will be asked to

present the card.

Those members who cannot pick up their tickets in person can order them through the mail. You must include a self-addressed, stamped return envelope.

Ticket requests that do not have the return envelope will not be processed. Mail orders must be received by Tuesday, July 5 to allow sufficient time for processing and delivery to your residence.

The 39th annual Festa is Friday, July 22 through Sunday, July 24 on the Summerfest grounds.

Since the beginning of Festa Italiana in 1978, the Pompeii Men’s Club has operated the Festa “T-shirt booth” to raise funds for the Italian Community Center.

This year, Festa is the weekend of July 22-24 on the Summerfest grounds and the Pompeii Men’s Club is looking forward to doing its part.

The club is in need of volunteers to help sell Festa sportsware each of the three days. Shifts are from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. or 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

If you are 16 years or older and would like to volunteer for one

shift or more, please contact Chuck Lazzaro at 414-421-7359.

The Pompeii Men’s Club is a non-profit organization that uses the income generated at Festa Italiana to fund scholarships for needy students entering Catholic high schools and various charities in the Greater Milwaukee Area.

The club has provided a grant to St. Joan Antida High School and participated with funding and manpower in the kitchen remodeling efforts at St. Rita Church of Three Holy Women Parish, allowing the church to generate successful fund raising through its spaghetti dinners and fish fries over the past several years.

tent, which came all the way from Italy. Inside attendees will find a theatrical and intimate setup, making some forget they are under a circus tent.

The show owner and founder, Manuel Rebecchi, has a deep-seeded history in the circus industry. His late aunt, Moira Orfei, ran one of the largest circus shows in Europe. When Rebecchi came to the States several years ago, he decided that Americans needed to experience a European-style show. He wanted to create something special and memorable. He was actually inspired to create the water stage while drinking a bottle of water.

Rebecchi knew he would need someone with great talent and vision to make his idea work. That is why he brought in Chante’ DeMoustes, Chief Operating Officer and Producer, to help make his dream a reality. The result? Something never before seen in the U.S., a cirque variety show featuring a 35,000 gallon water stage and performers from around the world.

The show is completely animal-free.

So what can you expect to see at this unique show? These are a few examples.

How about a contortionist who is able to bend her body in ways you would never imagine?

How high can he go? You’ll be asking yourself as the Italian singer stacks chair upon chair and then balances on top of them on his hands.

Today, while flag throwing isn’t done for military purposes, some of the principles still apply. Flag throwers are, in many ways, recognized as local celebrities because

If the local unit wins a competition in Italy or another country, the town residents celebrate the accomplishment in the same way an American city celebrates a World Series championship or a Super Bowl title.

In its half-century of existence, the group has thrilled crowds around the world from Russia to China, from Japan to France, from the United Arab Emirates to the United States. Only nine years after it was formed, Sbandieratori dei Borghi e Sestieri Fiorentini per-

formed at the World Cup in Germany. The unit performed in Colorado at an Italian festival several times in recent years.

The Sbandieratori dei Borghi e Sestieri Fiorentini performs every Easter Sunday in Figline Valdarno, a comune of 17,000 residents. The unit’s members come from communities in and around Figline Valdarno.

After Festa Italiana, the unit will participate in Festa del Palio di San Rocco in their hometown on Sept. 3 and in a weekend festival in Marostica (Venezia), Sept, 9-11.

Kim Marie said her goal was to gather the most talented musicians from the Milwaukee-area’s most popular rock and roll bands and regenerate the nostalgic feel of the ‘50s-‘60s rock scene. Joining Kim Marie today are vocalists Tony Clementi and Chuck Travis, Bruce Cole (drums), Mike Betts (trumpet), Tom Sorce (lead guitar), Mike Miller (saxophone) and Bob Sanderson (keyboards).

• Monday, June 13 – Joe Zarcone Band. Renowned drummer Joe Zarcone, keyboardist Jeff Stoll and vocalist Sharon Schmidt make up the nucleus of the Joe Zarcone Band. Zarcone and Stoll have been performing together and with other jazz acts for over 40 years. Schmidt is a former Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) award winner. • Tuesday, June 14 – Altered Five. Proclaimed “a staple of the Midwest’s band scene” and “a festival favorite” by the Milwaukee JournalSentinel in 2012, Altered Five’s delectable brew of blues and soul is quickly gaining national attention. The group’s third album, “Cryin’ Mercy”, was produced by Grammy-winner Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, Susan Tedeschi, James Cotton, etc.) and released in October 2014. It reached #3 in the iTunes blues store and hit #1 on the Roots Music Report radio chart. • Thursday, June 16 – Rick D’Amore’s Rockin’ Dance Party.

Rick D’Amore’s Rockin’ Dance Party will have you on your feet from the start, featuring memorable tunes from the ‘50s and ‘60s to keep you rocking all night.

Joining vocalist D’Amore will be Rob Chalifaux (bass), Tim Sardina (drums), Mike (Guido) Sturino (keyboards) and Tom Iorio (lead guitar).

This show will recreate those nights in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s when Rick and his band would play before a large crowd of fans at Festa Italiana.

• Monday, June 20 – VIVO. The 2015 WAMI award winner for “Jazz Artist of the Year” takes the stage on June 20. Warren Wiegratz, Pam Duronio and Tim Stemper combined their creative passions to form a lively and contemporary jazz·pop bossa·samba music ensemble called VIVO. Although Warren is famed for his saxophone work, you’ll also have the opportunity to experience his flute and melodica talents in VIVO, lending a very international flair to some of the Rick D’Amore Spanish, Portuguese and French songs that Pam delights in singing and that Tim enjoys coloring with his rich guitar chords and rhythms. VIVO has recorded their first CD, “On the Sunny Side”, which is now available at VIVO‘s performance venues or at their discography page on their website, www.vivojazz.com. The well-traveled Leroy Airmaster was founded in the 1980s and established a solid Midwest following before breaking up. The band was regenerated in 2010 to continue to perform its unique blend of blues, jazz and blues-rock music.

Led by Steve Cohen on harmonica, the band has won numerous WAMI awards and other blues recognitions. Joining Leroy Airmaster for the June 28 show will be premier pianist and vocalist Junior Brantley, who was formerly with the Fabulous Thunderbirds and the Jimmy Vaughn Band and played with the iconic Milwaukee blues band Short Stuff in the 1970s.

Hula hoop dance class begun at ICC

You’re invited to participate in a hoop hula dance class that has begun at the Italian Community Center on Tuesday nights from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m.

The class, sponsored by the Avanti and Culture Committees, is open to members and non-members and will take place every Tuesday in the bocce court room, except on June 21 and Oct. 18, when the room is not available.

The cost per class is: $5 for a member and $10 for a non-member.

Fees will be collected at the entrance table.

Dance instructor Kristi Tarantino said, “Hooping is not just for kids. Today, hula hooping has evolved into an exciting dance form called ‘hoopdance’, which has amazing benefits for the body and mind.

Luca Toni, one of the most prolific scorers in Italian soccer history, has announced his retirement.

The Hellas Verona striker played his final game against Juventus on May 8.

A World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, Toni scored 156 Serie A goals in 343 games, playing for eight different clubs (Vicenza, Brescia, Palermo, Fiorentina, Genoa, Roma, Juventus and Verona).

In his entire soccer career that started in 1990, he has scored more than 300 goals and played for 12 different Italian teams, one in Germany and one in Dubai.

He became the oldest player – at the age of 38 – to win the Serie A “Capocannoniere”, tying with Argentina’s Marco Icardi as top scorer in the 2014-15 season with 22 goals.

In 2005-06, he won the European Golden Shoe for the leading goal scorer in the continent with 31 goals for Fiorentina.

Local opportunities abound to see popular Italian operas this summer

by Barbara Collignon Opera lovers will not want to miss the featured Met Opera live in the HD presentation of Puccini’s Tosca at the Marcus Theatre in Mequon on Wednesday, June 22 at 6:30 p.m.

Tosca, the opera, was based on a play by Victorien Sardou with Sarah Bernhardt in the title role.

When he saw it, Puccini realized the melodrama was perfect for opera. Without Puccini’s moving music and the libretto created by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, the story of Tosca would only be an old-fashioned melodrama soon forgotten. Puccini’s opera gives the story a timeless validity.

Floria Tosca is a famous singer in love with Mario Cavaradossi, a painter engaged in painting a portrait of the Madonna in church.

Angelotti, Consul of the outlawed Roman Republic, is hiding in the chapel and recognizes Cavaradossi as a sympathizer with the Republican cause. Scarpia arrests Cavaradossi, believing that he helped Angelotti escape. This lecherous, ruthless and corrupt police chief Scarpia has a double goal: Tosca in his arms and Cavaradossi on the gallows. He tricks Tosca into agreeing to surrender herself to him in exchange for Cavaradossi’s pardon. However – he explains he can’t pardon him openly – Cavaradossi will have to go through a mock execution. While Scarpia is writing a safe-conduct pass for Tosca, she picks up a knife, and as he approaches to claim his reward, she stabs him to death.

In the next and final act, Cavaradossi has been allowed to write a farewell letter to Tosca, and he laments that he must die just when life seems sweetest. This is the unforgettable aria “E lucevan le stelle.” Tosca appears and explains how he should feign death when the rifles are fired and not to move until she tells him. Soldiers appear.

He is led to the place of execution.

They fire, and he falls. When Tosca realizes that her lover is dead and that she has been tricked, she falls on his body and abandons herself to despair. As the police come after her for the murder of Scarpia, she runs to the platform, reaches the parapet, and jumps to her death.

The two best-known and beloved arias from Tosca are Tosca’s “Vissi d’arte” and “Lucevan le stelle”.

Opera fans will be delighted to learn that the Marcus Theatre in Mequon has a Summer Series of opera. Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Rossini) is the featured opera June 8, followed by La Cenerentola (Rossini) on June 15. On Aug. 10, it is La Favorita followed by La Fanciulla del West (Donizetti) on Aug. 24. All opera films are on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m., and tickets are only $15. The theatre is located at 117 N. Port Washington Rd., Mequon.

La Cenerentola, the delightful opera by Rossini, is loosely based on the familiar tale of Cinderella.

When it debuted in 1817, it was not well received but, today it is #28 on the Operabase list of most-performed operas worldwide.

Once he had Ferretti’s libretto (which took him only 22 days to create), it took the genius Rossini only 25 days to write the music.

There are no magical solutions to Cenerentola’s dilemma because of obvious limitations on providing special effects. Thus the story changes considerably to emphasize the virtues of respect, love and goodness over the stepsisters’ insolence, whimsy and vanity. The complete title of the opera is, in fact, La Cenerentola – ossia la bontà in trionfo (Cinderella or goodness in triumph).

Prince Ramiro and his valet, Dandini, exchange roles so the prince can observe the behavior of Angelina (la Cenerentola) and her stepsisters Clorinda and Tisbe.

Instead of a cruel stepmother, there is a non-caring, biased stepfather, Don Magnifico. Instead of a magical fairy godmother, it is a philosopher and the prince’s former tutor, Alidoro, who recognizes Angelina’s goodness and enables her to go to Please turn to page 23

2016 Italian Film Festival is a record-breaker

The Italian Film Festival in Milwaukee celebrated its 10th year with a record number of films, record attendance and enthusiasm from filmgoers.

The festival was held April 2224, with eight films shown over the weekend at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Union Cinema. Attendance was 1,398, which was a record.

One of the most popular films was “An Italian Name/Il nome del figlio,” which was sponsored by the Italian Community Center.

“People were surprised by the disclosures made by this family during a dinner party,” said Paul Salsini, chair of the committee that screens the films for viewing.

“It was a departure from what we normally would expect at an Italian dinner. We are most grate-

ful to the ICC for making this film available.”

Other popular films included “I, Harlequin/Io, arlecchino,” a sweet film that reflected on a father/son relationship, “The Legendary Giulia/Noi e a giulia,” a delightful comedy with a cast of unlikely characters, and “Palio,” the documentary about the legendary horse race in Siena.

“People liked the diversity of the films on the schedule, from dramas to comedies to documentaries,” Salsini said.

The Milwaukee event is one of 13 Italian Film Festivals in the country. All shows were recent, critically acclaimed films in Italian with English subtitles.

Attendance was free.

“We look forward to our 11th film festival in April 2017,” Salsini said.

Homage to flag throwers in Salsini’s new book

Longtime Italian Community Center member Paul Salsini has published the sixth book in his “A Tuscan Series,” and ICC members who are thrilled watching performances by flag throwers at Festa Italiana may be especially interested in one of the stories in the collection.

It’s the title story in “The Fearless Flag Thrower of Lucca: Nine Stories of 1990s Tuscany,” in which a new participant in a fictional troupe in Lucca surprises onlookers and shatters a centuriesold tradition.

“I’ve always loved watching flag throwers,” Salsini said. “They have such grace, such agility, such precision, and their costumes are fantastic. I especially wanted to write a story about flag throwers after interviewing and watching members of the Sbandieratori dei Borghi e Sestieri Fiorentini at Festa Italiana last year. It was fun to write the story, and I think readers will enjoy it, too.”

Among the other eight stories is one inspired by an actual event that occurred in Italy in 1991.

Thousands of Albanians commandeered a ship and forced it to go to Bari, in the Puglia region.

Sweltering under the sun and with little food or water, they remained on the docks and in a soccer stadium for days, but then were sent back home.

“I learned about this incident watching a documentary film, ‘La nave dolce – The Human Cargo’ at the Italian Film Festival in Milwaukee in 2013,” Salsini said.

“It had incredible footage of the scenes and was very powerful. I wanted to use that as a setting for another story.”

supermarket threatens stores in a tiny village, a couple who were teenagers in the first book celebrate their golden wedding anniversary, and Frances Mayes’ memoir “Under the Tuscan Sun” helps rescue a struggling tourist business.

This is the last volume of “A Tuscan Series,” which has followed characters in a small village west of Lucca from World War II until the dawn of the 21st Century.

Although these are separate stories, many are related, with a central character in one becoming a minor character in others.

Salsini will read from his new book on Thursday, June 16, at 7 p.m. at Boswell Books, 2559 N Downer Ave., Milwaukee, and will have all of his books available in a tent at Festa Italiana, July 22-24.

Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?

This past May 3 marked the 80th anniversary of Joe DiMaggio’s debut in Major League Baseball with the New York Yankees.

Baseball historians concur that he stands as one of the greatest players of all time. He, undoubtedly, ranks first among players of Italian descent.

Giuseppe Paolo DiMaggio was born on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1914 in Martinez, Calif., the fourth son and eighth child of Sicilian immigrants Giuseppe and Rosalie DiMaggio. Joe graduated from Galileo High School in San Francisco. His pursuit of a baseball career did not initially sit well with his father. He wanted all of his

sons to follow in a longstanding tradition of fishermen. This included Joe’s brothers, Vince and Dominic, who also played in the Major Leagues.

After four minor league seasons with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League, Joe DiMaggio was called up by the Yankees.

He went on to play 13 seasons with the Bronx Bombers, 19361942 and 1946-1951. He missed three prime years of his playing career, 1943-1945, because he enlisted in the United States Army on Feb. 17, 1943 to serve his country during the final years of World War II. DiMaggio finished his career having played in 1736 games, having 6,821 at bats and 2,214 hits, resulting in a .325 batting average.

He had 389 doubles, 131 triples and 361 home runs. He scored 1,390 runs and had 1,537 runs batted in. He had an on-base percentage of .398 and a slugging percentage of .579. He died on Mar. 8, 1999 at the age of 84 in Hollywood, Fla. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, Calif.

Here are several other factoids, by the number, about the man known as “Joltin’ Joe” or “The Yankee Clipper.”

2 - DiMaggio won two batting championships, hitting .381 in 1939 and .352 in 1940. He was the third New York Yankees player to win a batting title, behind Babe Ruth (.378 in 1924) and Lou Gehrig (.363 in 1934), and the first to win it more than once.

3 - DiMaggio won three Most

Valuable Player Awards. He was the first New York Yankees player to win it more than once after he captured his second MVP in 1941, and when he won again in 1947, he was the first Yankee to win it three times.

369 - DiMaggio struck out only 369 times across his entire career, which included 6,821 times at bat.

100,000 - Joe DiMaggio signed a landmark contract on Feb. 7, 1949, a $100,000 deal to play baseball, the first player in history to reach the plateau. (Incidentally, the first player to sign a $200,000 contract was Henry Aaron with the Atlanta Braves in 1972. Today, the minimum salary in Major League Baseball is $507,500!)

1973 – The year Vince Marotta, the inventor of the Mr. Coffee automatic drip coffee machines, convinced DiMaggio, who had shied away from the limelight, to become the pitchman for his product.

Friends, Romans...oh, just give me a beer!

by Blaise Di Pronio I recently came across an article on beer (we are in Milwaukee, after all) which utilized the conspicuously Italianate word “Cicerone” in its text discussing a Cicerone Certification Program. A what?

Read on.

Your humble author prides himself on possessing a substantial lexicon but, this augmentative (in Italian, the use of an “one” ending enlarges the connotation of the original word, e.g. “baffi” means mustache while “baffone” means a huge mustache – got it?) Use of the name of the great Roman philosopher, lawyer and orator, Cicero, left me baffled. What the heck was a Cicerone? And what did he have to do with the Teutonic subject of beer? Certainly not a large size version of our Cicero.

Marcus Tullius Cicero was also a political theorist and Consul of the Roman Republic where he was in office circa 63 B.C. His influence has been great and varied especially in the history of the Latin language and its writings in general.

He was an accomplished prose stylist and orator. In fact, John Kennedy’s famous phrase asking what one can do for his country has been traced back and attributed to Cicero as he was always imploring Romans (over 2,000 years ago!) to be aware that it was crucial for citizens to make personal contributions in order for society (and thus, their country) to survive.

It should be noted that the noun cicerone is not one exclusive to beer industry usage as alluded to above.

In fact, cicerones were originally local guides in Italy who conducted

by Thomas Hemman Times Editor With the 105th running of the Indianapolis 500 this Memorial Day weekend, fans tend to recall many of the great drivers who have won this prestigious race. One of the drivers who is likely to come to mind is the Italian American Mario Andretti, who won the race in 1969.

To date, Andretti remains the only driver ever to win these major racing events: the Dayton 500 (1967), the Indy 500 and the Formula One World Championship (1978), and, along with Juan Pablo Montoya, the only driver to have won a race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. (For those who don’t follow auto racing, a different type of car is driven in each of these

events.)

Overall, Andretti notched 109 wins on the major race circuits.

There is, however, another Italian American of racing fame who established quite a winning tradition. It was Raffaele “Ralph” DePalma, who was born in Biccari (Apulia), Italy, on Dec. 18, 1882. He won the Indy 500 in 1915.

His family emigrated to the United States in 1893. As a young man, he tried bicycle racing with mixed results. At the age of 22, DePalma began racing motorcycles before switching to the automobile dirt track racing circuit in 1908, the year the American Automobile Association established the national driving championship.

DePalma was an immediate suc-

visitors and sightseers to museums and explained matters of archaeological, antiquarian, historic or artistic interest. They were named after their famous and eloquent Roman speaker. Guides were chosen on their knowledge and ability to be loquacious (the ability of talking a great deal). In addition to the size usage mentioned above, “one” added to the end of an Italian noun can also turn it into a simple adjective. Thus, a cicerone means Cicero-like, i.e., knowing and talkative. So loquacity and expertise were necessary traits of these professional guides.

So how did a cicerone infiltrate the beer industry? Well, the effete and pretentious wine snobs had their sommelier or expert wine steward. Thus, the beer conoscenti (Italian for those “in the know”)

needed an impressive and secretive foreign moniker- in effect, a knowing and talkative, Cicero-like guide to beer and thus, a beer cicerone.

The noun cicerone is now a trade marked term used to designate someone with a demonstrated expertise in beer. It is a certification trademark and one must pass an examination in order to be designated a Certified Master Cicerone. The exam is a rigorous four-hour test of beer knowledge such as beer draft systems, styles, brewing and beer pairings with food. Those who pass become beer professionals and thus suitable candidates for on-premises beer programs, stewards, managers, distributors, sales, etc. So imagine, having the full weight and clout of a Cicero when ordering a simple brew. Who would have draught?

by Blaise Di Pronio There’s one at the Venetian in Las Vegas and one at the Venetian in Macao. There’s another at Epcot in Disney World and one at the South China Mall in Dongguan, China. Many others exist, almost identical, but usually in smaller scales. And, lastly, there’s one at the ICC’s Festa grounds. We mean, of course, replicas of St. Mark’s Campanile (Campanile di San Marco) in Venice.

Campanile or bell tower (Lit. torre campanaria in Italian) comes from the Italian campana or bell. Belfry (from the French berfroi or siege-tower and our bell) would be another English equivalent. The original St. Mark’s belfry is, as we all should know, next to St. Mark’s Basilica at Piazza (Square) San Marco in Venice.

The tower is 323 feet tall, and it stands alone in front of the basilica. It consists of a brick square shaft 39 feet wide at each side topped by the loggia housing the belfry and its five bells. This is topped by a cube faced with images of the Lion of St. Mark and the female representation of Venice (la Giustizia: Justice), all capped by a pyramid-like spire with a weather vane representing the Archangel Gabriel.

Each of the five bells of the campanile had a special purpose.

announced executions; the Mezza Terza proclaimed a session of the Senate; the Nona sounded midday; the Trottiera called the members of the Maggior Consiglio to council meetings, and the Marangona, the biggest, rang to mark the beginning and ending of working day. They are tuned in the scale of A. The first tower was initially built in the 9th century, and it was subsequently restored and rebuilt several times due to lightning strikes, fires and collapses.

Today’s definitive shape was completed in the 16th century followed, of course, with rebuildings and restorations but, in 1902, it collapsed completely. It was rebuilt exactly as it and with the work finished in 1912, and it was inaugurated on April 25, 1912 on the occasion of St. Mark’s Feast – exactly 1000 years after the foundation of the original building had been laid.

At present, the campanile is undergoing restorative (ongoing rituals in most of Italy) and preventive work as it has begun to subside and lean as it sits on saturated subsoil (it is Venice!), on soft ground and wooden pilings and never far from flooding. But Pisa and its tower should not worry about competition as no major lean is expected and, should it fall, we will always have Cosmo Carini’s masterful replica for all of us in Wisconsin to enjoy.

cess, winning the AAA national dirt track championship in 1908, 1909, 1910 and 1911.

In 1911, he won the first Milwaukee Mile Championship Car race. A year later, he led the Indianapolis 500 for 196 of the 200 laps. His Mercedes cracked a piston and with only two laps remaining and he and his mechanic had to push the car across the finish line to take 11th place. At that time, only cars completing the full 200 laps received any prize money. This Mercedes is on display at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum.

On Oct. 5, 1912, he was almost killed in an accident at the Grand Prize race held on a road course in Milwaukee. After being impaled by a corn stalk, he was hospitalized for 11 weeks.

Overall, the 1912 racing season went quite well for DePalma as he earned the U.S. national driving championship.

In 1914, DePalma scored what he called his greatest victory when he beat Barney Oldfield to capture the Vanderbilt Cup of the roads of Santa Monica, Calif. DePalma had been let go by the Mercer Automobile Co. racing team in favor of Oldfield. DePalma showed he was a master tactician in beating Oldfield’s much faster car.

DePalma ended the 1914 season winning his second U.S. national driving championship. The following year, he drove to victory at the Indianapolis 500 with a Mercedes 4.5 liter Gp car.

DePalma was an intense competitor but one of the most popular racers with his fellow drivers and the fans because of his good sportsmanship, a quality he displayed on and off the track.

On Feb. 12, 1919 at Daytona Beach, Fla., he drove a Packard to a world speed record of 149.875 miles per hour (mph) over a measured mile. International competition began following the adoption of the three-liter engine limit in the U.S. and Europe in 1920. DePalma started the year driving for the French manufacturer, Ballot. His vehicle won the pole position for the 1920 Indy race, and he led much of the way, but, due to faulty bearings, he did not finish the race.

In 1921, he traveled with other Americans to Le Mans to compete in the French Grand Prix. There, he finished second to the Duesenberg driven by fellow American Jimmy Murphy. That same year, DePalma won his second consecutive pole position at the Indy 500 at a speed of 100.750 mph.

He drove in each of the Indy 500 races from 1911 to 1925, and his total of 613 laps led stood as the all-time record until it was tied by Al Unser on the 200th lap of the 1987 race and broken the following year. Besides a first place finish in 1915, DePalma placed fourth in 1922, fifth in 1920, sixth in 1911 and 1919 and seventh in his last Indy in 1925.

Campanile di San Marco

Il campanile di San Marco è uno dei simboli più importanti della città di Venezia. I Veneziani lo chiamano affettuosamente El parón de casa (Il padrone di casa).

Assieme all’omonima(stesso nome) basilica e all’omonima piazza sottostante, da cui prende il nome, è il principale monumento di Venezia e uno dei simboli d’Italia.

Alto 98,6 metri è uno dei campanili più alti d’Italia. Si erge, isolato, in un angolo di Piazza San Marco di fronte alla basilica. di Venezia (la Giustizia). Il tutto è completato dalla cuspide, di forma piramidale, sulla cui sommità, montata su una piattaforma rotante per funzionare come segnavento, è posta la statua dorata dell’arcangelo Gabriele.

Di campane ce ne sono cinque i cui nomi sono legati alle occasioni in cui venivano anticamente utilizzate: 1. Marangona o Carpentiera detta anche Campanon (maggiore), è la campana maggiore e l’unica ad essersi salvata dal crollo del campanile; i suoi rintocchi annunciavano l’inizio e la fine dell’orario di lavoro dei marangoni, cioè dei carpentieri dell’Arsenale, e le sedute del Maggior Consiglio.

2. Nona o Mezzana (seconda), segnava e segna tuttora il mezzogiorno; segnalava il termine ultimo

in cui si potevano spedire lettere a Rialto.

3. Trottiera o Quarantìa (terza), dava invece il secondo segnale ai nobili che dovevano partecipare alle riunioni del Maggior Consiglio, i quali al suo suono mettevano dunque al trotto le cavalcature (prima che l’uso dei cavalli fosse proibito in città).

4. Pregadi, Pregadio o Mezza terza (quarta),annunciava invece le riunioni del Senato, i cui membri erano detti Pregadi.

5. Renghiera o Maleficio (quinta), è la minore delle campane e suonava prima che un magistrato facesse la sentenza.

Una bellissima replica del campanile, costruita dal nostro maestro costruttore, Cosmo Carini, si puo vedere durante la Festa Italiana nel lungolago di Milwaukee.

Nel 1968 si sentiva una canzone del duo Simon & Garfunkel, Mrs. Robinson, che fu inclusa nella colonna sonora(soundtrack) del film Il Laureato (The Graduate). La canzone ebbe un grandissimo successo e conteneva un verso che citava Joe DiMaggio(uno dei più famosi giocatori di baseball della storia) e divenne notissimo in tutto il mondo: “Where have you gone, Joe Di Maggio? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you. What’s that you

say, Mrs. Robinson? Joltin’ Joe has left and gone away.” (“Dove sei andato, Joe Di Maggio? Una nazione volge i suoi occhi desolati verso di te. Che cos’è che dici, sig.ra Robinson? Il Grande Joe ha lasciato ed è andato via”).

Inizialmente DiMaggio non apprezzò questa strofa, pensando che criticasse il suo ritiro dal baseball. Ma nel 1968 Paul Simon incontrò DiMaggio in un ristorante a New York e gli spiegò che la

strofa si riferiva al non avere più “eroi” come lui.

Maggio 3, 2016 e’ stato 80 anni dal giorno che DiMaggio fece il suo debutto con la squadra di New York, i Yankees, in una partita contro i St. Louis Browns. Tanti auguri alla memoria di Joltin Joe.

di Donato Di Pronio San Pietro Celestino, un uomo che ebbe il coraggio di rinunziare al potere, nacque tra il 1209 e il 1215 (gli storici sono ancora incerti sulla data) a Sant’Angelo Limosano (Molise), undicesimo dei dodici figli di Angelerio e Maria Leone. Dopo la morte prematura del padre, la madre lo avviò, con molti sacrifici, agli studi.

A 16 anni circa entrò nel monastero benedettino di Santa Maria in Faifoli (diocesi di Benevento). Intorno ai venti, insieme ad un confratello, lasciò la tranquillità e le comodità del monastero per andare a servire Dio altrove.

Abbandonato dal compagno, Pietro proseguì da solo. Fece sosta a Castel di Sangro (Abruzzo), dove incontrò e si unì ad un eremita.

Accortosi della vita disonesta di costui, ispirato dal Signore, rinviò l’andata a Roma e se ne andò in altra località montana (Monte Palleno-Porrara, Abruzzo), dove giunto si fermò presso un grande sasso sotto il quale scavò, per ricoverarsi, una buca ampia quel

tanto necessario per poter stare in piedi e disteso e vi rimase per tre anni (Nel secolo XIV, i suoi discepoli costruirono sul posto un eremo: la Madonna dell’Altare).

Esortato anche da molte persone a diventare ministro di Dio, raggiunse Roma, da dove, ordinato sacerdote, se ne tornò in Abruzzo e si esiliò in un antro del monte Morrone; qui visse per cinque anni colmato da Dio di molti beni.

La già diffusa fama di santità di frate Pietro crebbe e si propagò maggiormente. Umili e potenti, nobili e regnanti, accorrevano al Morrone e dall’incontro con il santo giovane Eremita uscivano colmi di grazia, di serenità e con la forza per proseguire, migliorati e fiduciosi, il proprio cammino.

Verso il 1243, Pietro, amante di quiete e solitudine, seguito da due compagni, Francesco da Atri e Angelo di Caramanico, lasciò il posto dirigendosi verso la Maiella.

Giunto nel territorio del Comune di Roccamorice (paese antichissimo e storico, suggestivo e splendida-

mente panoramico, da dove l’occhio spazia dal mare ai monti) si rifugiò in diversi posti ed in ultimo sotto una grande spelonca, intorno alla quale costruì un Eremo, che successivamente fu denominato EREMO di SANTO SPIRITO; e fu qui che, dopo poco tempo, ispirandosi alla Regola di San Benedetto da Norcia, fondò l’istituzione religiosa che fu via via denominata: Ordo Sancti Spiritus de Magella, Ordine di frate Pietro del Morrone, Ordine dei Fratelli Eremiti della Maiella, Ordine di San Damiano, Ordine dei Fratelli dello Spirito Santo, ecc. e dopo la sua elezione a pontefice, Ordine dei Celestini. La Congregazione si diffuse con sorprendente rapidità in Italia e in Europa.

L’Eremo divenne scuola di formazione spirituale e culturale, fucina di santi eremiti, centro di irradiazione di fede e di fratellanza, imponendosi all’interessamento e all’attenzione della Chiesa e dei governanti.

Maria Leone, per un susseguirsi di circostanze, partito con l’ideale di una vita eremitica e penitenziale in perfetta solitudine, da anacoreta si ritrovò archimandrita e promotore di un movimento religioso.

Il 5 luglio del 1294 frate Pietro, con sorpresa generale, fu eletto Papa durante una riunione plenaria cardinalizia tenuta a Perugia, dove era stato trasferito il Conclave, non essendo Roma in quegli anni una sede sicura a causa delle rivolte, dei disordini e dei tumulti che la turbavano.

Frate Pietro fu eletto Papa dopo due anni e mezzo di Sede vacante: a proporre il suo nome fu un Cardinale che conosceva questo umile santo Eremita vissuto da sempre in grotte e ripari tra i monti della Maiella. Gli incaricati a comunicargli la nomina lo trovarono in un rifugio (passato alla storia con il nome di Eremo di san Giovanni all’Orfento, appendice di quello di Santo Spirito a Maiella) dove si era ritirato per sfuggire le folle di devoti che andavano a visitarlo.

Festa della Repubblica in Italy

Festa della Repubblica is the Italian Republic Day, which is celebrated on June 2 each year. The day commemorates the referendum held by universal suffrage in 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government, following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism.

With 12,717,923 votes for a republic and 10,719,284 for the monarchy, the male descendants of the House of Savoy were sent into exile.

To commemorate it, a grand military parade is held in central Rome, presided over by the President of the Italian Republic in his role as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. The Prime Minister, formally known as the President of the Council of Ministers, and other high officers of state also attend.

There are important celebrations in all the Italian embassies and foreign heads of state are invited. Even though the main parade is in Rome, many Italian cities celebrate the day as well.

Tradition of Il Palio della Marciliana

Every year the 14th century makes a comeback in Chioggia, a coastal town in Venice (in the Veneto region of northern Italy).

In the 1300s, the citizens of Chioggia were famous for their fearsomeness in battle. The town was also prosperous because of its salt merchants and easy access to the sea. This led to a series of conflicts with the Republic of Genoa, which wanted commercial control of the Chioggia port. The Genoans succeeded in conquering and occupying Chioggia for several months. It was finally liberated on June 24, 1380 by the Venetian navy.

Modern citizens commemorate their liberation by holding public markets in the piazza, historic reenactments, and musical performances. The event is named for “La Marciliana,” a commercial vessel of the 1300s, which has become the symbol of freedom for Chioggia. This event is scheduled Friday, June 17 through Sunday, June 19.

The day also includes a medieval tournament followed by music, drinking and feasting. In true Italian fashion, a soccer tournament is held in the Santa Croce piazza – although this form of soccer takes on a medieval twist, with more aggressive, almost violent, playing.

In the evening, rowboats carrying lit candles make their way down the Arno River. A fireworks show follows.

Italy’s Festival dei Due Mondi

The Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of the Two Worlds) is an annual summer music and opera celebration held in late June and early July in Spoleto (Umbria), Italy. The festival was founded by composer Gian Carlo Menotti in 1958. The dates for the 2016 event are June 24 through July 10.

The festival features a vast array of concerts, opera, dance, drama, visual arts and roundtable discussions on science. It has developed into one of the most important cultural manifestations in Italy.

The name of the festival comes from Menotti’s intention to have the worlds of American and European culture facing each other in his event. This concept would then be strengthened by the fact that it was held in conjunction with its “twin,” the Spoleto Festival USA, held annually in May and June in Charleston, S.C. The twinning only lasted some

15 years. After growing disputes between the Menotti family and the board of Spoleto Festival USA in the early 1990s, a separation occurred.

In 1986, under Menotti’s direction, a third installment of the Spoleto Festival series was started in Melbourne, Australia. In 1990, the Australian fest changed its name to the Melbourne International Festival of Arts.

This year, the The Festival dei Due Mondi summons the young students in Spoleto to rediscover the cultural identity connected to the creation and development of the Festival of Spoleto.

The festival offers children and young people a number of courses in drama education, internships and promotions on the shows dedicated to young people. These courses are aimed at pupils in the primary, middle and high schools of Spoleto.

Victory K8 and Italian Immersion School report

The students in Maestra Annette Robertson’s K4 class celebrated Earth Day, Giornata della terra, with their 9th grade partner class. They talked about seasons, elements and plants of the earth that need to be taken care of and sustained for the health and wellbeing of the planet.

The K4 students made Earth Day cake, a chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting, small candies and gummy worms. To honor the earth, the students made believe that it was real dirt cake covered with sand, ladybugs, beetles and worms. It was a very fun and delicious celebration to honor Mother Earth and the planet!

Our students have been assessed on their acquisition of Italian vocabulary including: colors, numbers 1-20, shapes, days of the week, and basic conversational words.

They studied farm animals for two

weeks. The students will plant sunflower seeds in flats that they will place on window sills to germinate sprouts. The sprouts will be shared with all classrooms at school so that every student learns about the healthy attributes of sprouts.

The last few weeks of school will be a review of the year and celebration of our annual “Water Day”, where we honor fresh water locally and globally.

Forza bambini la scuola e’ quasi finita e dopo una bella vacanza ci vediamo tutti in first grade!

Students in Maestre Elizabeth Zizzo and Rita Szopinski’s first grade class turned into engineers and created shadow box theaters.

The students followed the design process and created scenery using various shapes. Then they wrote a play to present to the class. It was a great way to explore light and shadow.

Students in Maestro Alex Kaftan’s and Mrs. Carrie Brunelli’s second grade class finished a unit on politics. Part of the unit was spent learning about the presidential campaign. The other part was dedicated to learning about the relationship between the taxpayers, the mayor, services and jobs. The students are constructing their own kites for the STEM. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Fair.

The children in Maestro Steven Falsetti’s fourth and fifth grade

class went to JA (Junior Achievement) Biztown where they ran an entire town for the day. It was an economics lesson where students learned to run businesses and be fiscally responsible. They became young CEOs for the day and ran businesses such as Culvers, Wisconsin Sports and Joy Global.

Our students worked with Ms. Robertson, Education Chair, United Nations Association of Greater Milwaukee, to learn about the United Nations before they spent a morning in a live chat with college age peace keepers in Kabul, Afghanistan. The students read books, watched videos and wrote reports about the daily life of an Afghani person. Club Garibaldi nips Felici Amici to capture spring bocce title

In one of the most exciting playoff tournament finishes in recent seasons, Club Garibaldi edged Felici Amici, 12-11, to win the Italian Community Center’s spring bocce championship on Monday, May 16.

On its final scoring opportunity of the evening, the players on Club Garibaldi first knocked away a potential game-winning point for Felici Amici, then rolled two other balls closer to the pallino than any of Felici Amici’s to secure the victory.

“It was quite a finish,” said Dan Conley, bocce leagues coordinator.

“A lot of people stayed until the very end. There was a lot of cheering going on for both teams.”

Club Garibaldi was the firstplace team from the Wednesday night league, having a 19 win, 5 loss record, and having won a tiebreaking playoff over Rosebuds to earn the first-place distinction.

er over the Pallino Magnets, to secure first place.

To make the championship match, Club Garibaldi rolled past those Pallino Magnets in the quarterfinals and Porticello in the semifinals. The final score in both games was 12-5 in favor of Club Garibaldi. Porticello entered the tournament as the first-place team from the Monday night league (186).

Felici Amici reached the championship round scoring earlier victories over Diletante/Amici, 12-11, and Como Si Chiama, 12-4. The Diletante/Amici team was the runner-up on Monday night with a 177 record. Como Si Chiama was the first-place team of the Thursday afternoon seniors league with a 222 record.

As the champions, the players on the Club Garibaldi team – Al Zdrcojewski, Jim Lehmann, John Lehmann and Gary Lisieck – each received a $15 certificate, good at Cafe La Scala, the ICC’s restaurant. Club Garibaldi played without its teammate Russ Sereno.

The players on Felici Amici each received a $5 Cafe La Scala gift certificate.

In first round games not previously mentioned, Porticello defeat-

ed Paesani, 12-5, and Como Si Chiama rolled past the Rosebuds, 12-5. Paesani was the runner-up in the Thursday afternoon seniors league with a 20-4 record.
