Fatima Faheem and Humayra Rahman Mitul are in conversation with Tahmid Jamal Diaz, as he discusses his musical journey

Q

Why did you decide to pursue a career in the music industry?

Photo: Ashraf Uddin Apu

Since I was young, it has always been my dream to pursue music. My role model was

30

Tunes

My choice in music is quite diverse. From rap to lalon to dubstep electro singing to folk song, I have tried it all my first cousin, Salman Shah, who used to be a Bangladeshi actor. Since childhood I’ve been seeing him perform on screen and that sort of inculcated me to be a part of the media industry. I had the opportunity of working and jamming with talented people like Habib, Arnob and Fuad. It felt wonderful to be appreciated for my work and hence I started taking this passion more seriously.

Top favourite musicians? Tupac Eminem Fuad Arnob Biggie

Were you trained?

No, I was not really trained. However, I had the opportunity to learn from people like Arnob and Fuad. I rehearsed and practiced music every morning diligently and guess what? When you have the guidance of such brilliant people and the inner drive, the goal is attainable.

How would you describe the music scene in your hometown? Does it influence you?

Although I’m from Chittagong I don’t think my hometown music scene influences me that much. But there are a few Bangladeshi musicians that I am fond of such as Lucky Akhand and Ayub Bacchu. But as for my hometown, I don’t feel Chittagong’s music scene has influenced me that much.

What’s the difference between the music industry today compared to when

you started?

I’ve been in the industry since 2010; that’s when my first single came out with Fuad. I feel the evolution has been through technology. As in social media wise - we have Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and all these new smartphones enabling people to have access to the internet. So the exposure right now is insane! I mean, you can make things go viral these days. The main aim of artists is to go viral. It’s not about how many CDs are sold but how well you are known among people of different age groups and different backgrounds.

How does the music affect the lyrics and vice versa?

I don’t have any fixed genre or anything. I rap, I sing, I do pretty much everything. I also have the experience of singing Lalon. My choice in music is quite diverse. From rap to Lalon to dubstep to electro singing to folk song, I have tried it all. My album also has this folk song that we remade with Fuad with permission of the person who holds the copyright. I think it plays a major role as in every music has its own flavor and a tempo and a vibe to it so I think lyrics also falls into it. But I am very conscious about my lyrics, I think there is this thing going on where everybody is promoting gangster-rap, sex and drugs, there is enough violence in today's generation as it is, we do not need to promote it through music. So I try to go for positivity in my music.

Ice Ice Baby!

Fatima Faheem tries out the booming ritual of skin icing for fresh dewy skin all summer 38

Summer is awesome as it grants us the opportunity to go outdoors and enjoy the things we love. However, summer sun comes with a cost and it’s your skin that ends up paying. Sun damage can lead to wrinkles, marks, dry skin, premature aging and even skin cancer over time. The sweltering season requires careful attention for your skin even as you enjoy the weather.

type. But one thing that all types of skin would love is ICE! Adding two or three ice cubes to your juice, syrup or even water cools your entire system. Now, imagine how cool you’d feel if you applied ice externally? Good news! Ice cubes have notable benefits for your skin. Including ice cubes to your daily beauty regimen is actually a good idea. Do you wonder how?

Beauty Alert

Good news! Ice cubes have notable benefits for your skin. Including ice cubes to your daily beauty regimen is actually a good idea two ice cubes on your face. Ice cubes have the ability to swiftly give your face a dewy and fresh look without applying makeup. • Stroking ice on the face on a daily basis improves blood circulation giving your face a healthy glow. • Got oily skin? Ice cubes minimise the production of excess oil. Tie up two ice cubes in a soft cloth and massage gently on your face till they melt. • Got acne? Well, ice cubes work on acne too! Just place these coolers over the zits and you’ll be surprised with the considerable reduction in swelling and redness. • The scorching heat may cause rashes if the skin is exposed to the sun for a long period of time. The best way to treat this is with ice cubes. Don’t use them directly on your face, instead wrap them up in a soft cotton cloth or a zip-lock plastic bag and press it gently against the affected area. It will give you a chilly sensation and soothe the heat on your skin • Dark circles are a hassle. We often wake up and regret working late, watching movies because of the ugly patches all over our lower

eyelids. Placing cucumber slices over your eyes do help but it’s not always effective. For efficient results, mix cucumber juice with boiled rose water and freeze this mixture. Then place the solid form of the mixture on your dark circles. It will help in reducing dark circles and also decrease puffiness. Don’t forget to cool the rose water before putting it in freezer. Even Farzana Shakil encourages the use of ice cubes. “Skin icing helps tighten and shrink enlarged pores by helping to unclog large pores. The skin is bound to get dehydrated in the hot weather and it cannot be hydrated by water intake since you’re fasting.” The solution is to rub ice cubes tied up in a cotton cloth over your stretched skin which feels uncomfortable. Your skin will feel refreshed and moisturised. Farzana Shakil quotes that sensitive skin suffers the most. Exposure to the heat for long hours can cause it to excavate or cause acne. Using ice is an efficient way to cool the hot skin. Cold water can also be splashed, right? Why bother making and dealing with ice cubes! But it has been observed that liquid ice fails to cool the skin as effectively as crushed ice in a piece of cloth. Ice facial and cold therapies are widely used to obtain smooth and flawless skin.

Do-s and Don’t-s Don’t use more than two ice cubes. Excessive use may lead to skin problems that can worsen your situation. Don’t apply ice cubes on your face directly. It can cause the delicate capillaries under the skin to break. Hence it is advisable to use ice cubes wrapped in a clean cloth. Try something interesting! Instead of the normal ice cubes, why don’t you pour fruit juice in your ice tray and let it freeze. Once it turns into cubes, rub them on your face to get the goodness of fruits. It also gives you a radiant complexion.

hampering the décor of your room. Discard them and clean out those corners. Imagine the cozy setting you want to live in - this will motivate you to discard unnecessary things without feeling guilty. Old newspapers, magazines, useless utensils, worn out clothes or curtains, a broken frame or that hideous chair should be given away without any remorse.

Drowning in endless preparations for Eid? Nahid Tabassum makes a checklist before the festivities come knocking at your door

What goes around may come around

If you keep outdated furniture and clothes assuming that the archaic might find its way back, then you are occupying space that can be used for a better purpose. Cupboards get cluttered easily, so it’s best to pull out old papers, books, discard them and keep only the important items stacked up in front.

Make room As the moon begins to wane at the beginning of Ramadan, revamping the house starts in full swing. Shopping is inevitable this month, but stuffing your cupboard and clogging the room is never the solution. Rearranging can be done tactfully to save you from perpetual hard work and unpleasant embarrassment. The hacks may be old or new, yet they are effective in making your homes cozy and ambient for Eid.

Less is more The less crowded your place is the more room you have to highlight the hand-crafted corner table or that gorgeous glass lamp. Keeping that in mind, first make a list of furniture that is

The month long Ramadan ropes in tonnes of leftovers inside your refrigerator. As a myriad of items will be prepared on Eid, you should unclog your refrigerator beforehand to get rid of the stench from the bits and pieces of last week’s iftar. Also boxes are better alternatives to bowls to make space in the fridge.

Hygiene comes first

The loo should always look as good, if not better, than the other rooms. A messy washroom is an instant put-off and will take away from the lavishly decorated drawing room. Empty bottles of shampoo, old toothbrushes, and wet towels are unflattering and will leave a clumsy impression.

Some gadgets must go

Be it your beloved deceased sound system or that ancient mixer/ juicer - if it does not work it should find its way to the trashcan. The abandoned PS2 or your first ever bought phone are only collecting dust and cobwebs and need to move out now! This may take a while so it’s best to start ahead of time. Minimalistic interior looks great and keeps things clutter-free as well. This Eid put things in proper order that will earn you appreciation and admiration from your circle of family and friends. Have a neat one!

Natasha Rahman tries out these fabulous moves to accelerate the metabolism and burn calories, all at once! itting the gym may not always be feasible, but that’s no excuse to get into the saddle and do nothing this Ramadan. The best way to really shape up this month is to follow a moderately paced workout regime a few hours after Iftar. There are those who workout while fasting, but if that gets too strenuous for you, you can hit the music after your bellies are satiated from the evening meal.

HIIT pushes your body to give it all you’ve got for a small period of time, which is followed by a recovery time Plank-a-rama Planks are excellent for strengthening your core. However, it’s very easy to get this move wrong. When you are in a pushup position, remember to always position your elbows directly beneath the shoulders and your wrist directly beneath your elbows so that it forms a straight line. Your body must form a straight line starting from the back of your head to your feet. The natural instinct for your stomach is to dip down as this is extremely strenuous on the torso. The key to holding this position for longer is to constantly keep breathing. At no point should you hold your breath during the workouts. As you get stronger hold the plank for about a minute and a half and pace it up to a full two minutes. Don’t let that hip dip!

Tricep Dips Ah, this one is a killer. This workout is excellent for toning up the arms while giving the rest of your body a reason to burn as well. Knees bent, sit on the mat, keeping your hands on the floor slightly behind you with the fingers pointing towards the body. Your hands should be positioned shoulder-width apart with your legs extended in front of you. Now push 130

your torso and hips off the mat so you are hovering above the mat. Now bend your elbows, bringing your hips down and again push yourself up to the hover by straightening your arms. Focus on bending your elbow and not on lowering your hips. To make the tricep dip harder, keep your palms on the floor, lift your hips keeping the knees together and bring one leg up and lower it at the bend of the elbow. Repeat this on the other side. Be careful to keep the elbows facing back and stack your arms as near to your ribcage as possible to avoid injury. Start with the basic dips at least thirty times and then move on to the advanced form with each leg being raised at least ten times to feel the burn. These also work on the hamstrings and quads.

Back attack This will make you feel like Superwoman! Lie flat on your stomach with your arms reaching out ahead of you and over your head. Elongate your legs and really stretch out your entire body. Now lift your knees, keeping the legs straight, and your arms off the ground and hold it in that superwoman position for three seconds and bring yourself down on the mat. This works your entire back area and also strengthens your hips. To kick it up a notch,

lift your left arm and right leg and change it with the right arm and left leg, hold it for three seconds and bring your body down. Make sure to keep your arms straight as you raise your hips up and your knees straight throughout the routine. Twenty reps on each side should be good if you are a beginner. The back attack forces your entire back, starting from the upper, working through the middle, and finally working your lower back to crunch all the flab on your back. To have a well rounded workout, try a five minute High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). HIIT pushes your body to give it all you’ve got for a small period of time, which is followed by a recovery time. This could comprise of squats, jump ropes, burpees, knee tucks and mountain climbers. Each of these moves should be done for a minute and you can rest for twenty seconds between each exercise and move on to the next one. Pumping weights and cardio can only get you so far. Hence you should opt for more fruits and raw veggies for a stronger fitter you!

exploring and shopping. Muted prints on the walls, his home is cozy and yet generously decorated with floral crockery and paintings. “I get my morning dose of freshness from a cup of tea and tending to the plants in my balcony,” he begins. Digging deeper, the man confesses his love for classical Bengali music. “To start the day with Rabindra Sangeet is my favourite way to embrace the day.” Bapon’s cozy beauty lounge and the homely décor reveal his artistic mind. He is one of the few makeup artists who promotes the ‘no makeup look’ in Bangladesh and emphasises on using natural and matte based makeup.“I try to keep my work clean and original,” he smiles. With summer only adding to more issues, Bapon alerts the ladies for Eid.“Frosted eye shades or glossy lips should cautiously be avoided. Compact powder is more suitable for day makeup while matte foundation works well for an evening look. MAC and Bobby Brown matte finish should come in handy to beat this summer Eid with a bang on style.” He recommends soothing eyeshadow palettes starting from light brown to peach teamed with bright matte lipsticks to complement the mid-summer Eid outfits. “Monochromatic eye shades can be used as well; if you wish to put more colours make sure you blend the bridge using a brush to leave a smooth effect,” he sums up. For summer, he suggests poofed pony,

The guru who has dolled up many famous faces and done numerous Indian and Pakistani fashion shows, bows down to the classic belles.“None can ever be parallel to Audrey Hepburn or Rekha’s beauty.” He admires his fellow contemporaries Farzana Shakil and Kaniz Almas Khan for their contribution to the industry and considers BillyB and Mickey Contractoras his muse. A classically trained singer for fourteen years, a home stylist and an occasional cook, the wizard of brushes shares, “I adore the company of my dearest friends and colleagues at my home for every joyful occasion.” “I believe the key to feeling beautiful is to appear beautiful,” he says reminding women of their inner goodness. “Women should ponder on style before rushing after trends,” he suggests,“I request all the ladies out there to pamper themselves enough.” For Eid, Bapon also shares some amazing quick hacks. “Contouring is a must! A quick five minute makeup routine starts with applying compact powder on your face and a shade lighter on your eyelids. Then indulge your lashes with generous coats of mascara and a few strokes of gel liner. Wear waterproof mascara and liner to stand against the sweaty summer.” Finally, Bapon suggests a white pencil instead of a black one to line the inside of the eyes and bring out that frosty look and voila! You are all set to go! Good natured and brilliantly artistic, Bapon brings a smile on all the faces he comes across.“I respect all my clients from the core of my heart. To meet the demands and to be able to convey it fruitfully is my greatest achievement.” And with that, the makeup guru signs off.

City of Gold Badruzzahan Ahmed invites you to re-discover the ancient capital of Bengal Sonargaon was once a thriving city of historic and administrative importance. Situated at Narayanganj, it is believed that this city was once banked at the confluence of the old course of River Brahmaputra and Meghna. Historians have established that this four hundred year old city’s origins to be as old as the pre-Sultanate period, but Sonargaon attained its true prominence in the 12th century when it served as the capital under the fearless Isa Khan, Sultan Fakruddin Mubarak Shah 136

and the Baro Bhuiyan Confederacy. Had the successive rulers, the legendary Mughals not shifted the capital from Sonargaon to Dhaka in the 1608, the history of the very capital that we live in today could have been entirely different. Sonargaon continued to flourish far into the British Colonial rule well into the 19th century, eventually yearning fame far and wide for its world acclaimed fabrics, the Muslin. Once part of the famous Silk Route, it is thus no wonder that Sonargaon

survives in the accounts of historic travelers such as Ibn Battuta, Ralph Fitch, Niccolo de Conti among many others who visited Sonargaon from far and wide. What survives of this glorious city is capable of transporting visitors back into time. Existing today along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, the remains of the old capital is a pleasant two-hour ride away from Dhaka, making it ideal for a day trip. T

he jolts we felt on April 25, were a reason for panic in Dhaka. During the tremor that lasted for nearly fifty seconds it dawned on us that somewhere, someone, was in a much worse situation. Gradually the full picture emerged. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake had struck our neighbouring county Nepal and its epicentre 80 km northwest of Kathmandu. Within the next few hours, across news networks and social media, the world watched in horror at the scale of this disaster. Many more aftershocks plagued this already ravaged nation. My heart went out to Nepal as I saw the images and it brought back wonderful memories. The historical treasures that had stood for over five hundred years were on the ground within the blink of an eye. The awe-inspiring Mount Everest spewed out avalanches one after another. Thousands lost their lives and the reported death toll kept rising. Human and cultural loss is immeasurable but the miraculous stories of survivors show resilience and hope. Visiting Nepal was one of the first trips I took with my family while residing in Dhaka. Though, over the next few years we did see other exotic countries, the charm and tranquillity still felt fresh. We travelled through Kathmandu, Phokra and took the plane ride to see the tallest peak in the world. Some things are unique only to Nepal. It’s a place where multiculturalism, spiritualism and religion are intertwined with urban life; shops, clubs, temples, historic monuments and restaurants stood side by side. The numerous UNESCO world heritage sites are open to public where not only tourists but also locals gather, pray, socialise and trade. The city is saturated with colour both metaphorically and literally. In wake of the quake I found myself looking back at the hundreds of images we had taken during the ten days there. Though it is painful, I decided the best way to honour its people and its country is to share some of these photos. While the people of Nepal begin to mourn and recover from this devastation, these pictures stand as record to what life was like before it all came down. Undoubtedly, there will be stories that will grab your attention; like those who have died while living out their dream of trekking the Everest. Yet the stories of everyday people going about their regular chores, cooking, bathing, washing clothes, working or praying at a temple will be lost forever. It is only then that we stop, remember and take hold of the simple moments in time and comprehend our fragility against nature.

Ashfaque Zaman relishes a taste of authentic Italian

Spaghetti n Polpette

After many countless hours of gruelling work, piles of paperwork, followed by the daunting traffic jams of Dhaka, an escape is always welcome. Perhaps a scenic gondola excursion through Venice or a walk through the tranquil vineyards of Tuscany would help us unwind. A weekend getaway to the numerous awe-inspiring wonders of Italy may not be plausible but an authentic taste can be found in this hectic capital. George’s La Dolce Vita in Banani offers some and more. As you walk into George’s La Dolce Vita, the décor transports you to a winery in Tuscany with a combination of modern art deco. The ambience, lighting and jazz music make the restaurant more of an experience than just a meal.

Lasagna Pizza

Steak Scottato

A scrumptious pizza of Bolognese, béchamel, ricotta, made from scratch, and mozzarella cheese; the pizza here is a harmonious combination of crispy, doughy and meaty. There are many layers to this pizza for all pizza lovers. Its charred edges give it a smoky taste. Given that the sauce has a definitive flavour of Italian spice and tomato, creating a splendid balance with the lightness of the cheese.

For those, who are searching for a full-bodied, filling meal; one is instantly drawn to the pasta, which, again, is homemade. The ragu sauce is thick, which goes perfectly well with the tender meatballs. The meatballs are cooked to perfection with Italian herbs, basil, parsley and lemon zest. The earthy flavours is quintessentially associated with a comforting weekend dinner. The ragu sauce is extremely hearty and welcoming compared to the canned sauces one would find in their pasta dishes at most Italian restaurants in Dhaka.

Insalata Di Caesar

This robust salad, which is a mix of arugula leaves, sun-dried tomatoes, pumpkin seeds and garlic croutons is complemented with a homemade Caesar dressing. The salad has a definitive, almost pungent flavour and a slight bite due to the seeds. If the taste of arugula and sun-dried tomato is overbearing, then you can opt for romaine lettuce and fresh tomatoes. The vegetables have a crunch as if they have just been picked from the garden. 144

In a city where medium-rare seems to be a term that is either misconstrued or simply a foreign language, one can get a properly cooked rib-eye steak at George’s. The steak is seared with a beautiful char on the outside, while retaining a juicy pink inside. With a dash of salt and pepper from the shaker at the table, it is a welcome meal with the ever synonymous smashed fries (because what’s steak without some sort of golden potatoes) and impeccably roasted vegetable compote. Cutting into this succulent steak is as tender as ending that arduous work week. Many favor a taste of the ocean and George’s offers a variation of seafood that is innovative and sparsely seen in Dhaka. The quiche is a pastry, filled with an egg cream mix, which is flavoured with vegetables and seafood. It is an ideal bite of something flaky and soft with the creamy egg retaining their fluffy texture.

Those who are seeking an earthy and nutty flavor should definitely dig into this one. The blend of spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg are not overbearing and the cream cheese frosting complements these flavours without being overly sweet.

The triple chocolate cookies

Perfection cake

This heavenly vanilla cake with indulgently rich chocolate ganache, made from high quality chocolate (Lucerne), gives it a velvety texture.

Little goodies of moist chocolate heaven with morsels of gooey chocolate in every bite, this lethal combo of chocolate on chocolate will stun you. These cookies are for the ultimate chocolate lovers, who can handle a heavy dose of pure cocoa.

Given the wide variety of flavours, this mix of iced tea, lemonade and slight trace of mint is most welcome with any meal. It is both refreshing and palate cleansing. The Comic

G

Graphic novels or comic books, whatever you choose to call them, have come a long way since the days when they were still being treated as a medium for children. Although once ridiculed as being trivial and shallow from both a visual and a literary stand, comics are now considered to be an essential cornerstone of modern literature. And why not? Gone are the days when comics were all about vanilla superheroes wearing shiny costumes and fighting colourful villains. Now we have riveting tales about complex protagonists involved in morally ambiguous situations; relatable characters who are more in tune with real humans. This kind of change does not take place overnight. There is the Silver Age of comics which progressed on to the Golden Age and so forth – but that is a topic for another article. Although many don’t partake in the noble culture, there’s no denying that comics have had tremendous impact on modern pop culture. They gave way to legitimate icons (hint: Batman) which spawned numerous blockbusters and TV shows that seem to be all the rage these days. Comic books have not only blossomed magnificently into maturity, like no other medium has before, but has also seen groundbreaking changes within itself that helped evolve it to become what it is today. Here, I’ll discuss a few comic books considered important because they had something or the other, if not a lot, to do with the said evolution. 148

The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson

All of you who fell in love with Batman because of the movies (both Burton’s and Nolan’s), Frank Miller is the man you thank. TDKR started publishing in 1986, the same year as Moore’s Watchmen. While Moore chose to invent a world from scratch to explore a ‘modern’ approach, Miller took one of the most iconic characters and gave him a reboot of sorts. The book features an old, retired Bruce Wayne who dons on the cowl again to save Gotham. Batman and the accompanying characters had never been more psychologically complex or seen such emotional depth. From the artwork to the writing, everything was given a fresh, gritty spin without altering the traditional tropes that made Batman work in the comics. Resultantly, we got a most well-known face shown in an entirely new form proving that modernisation of traditional characters was possible without ruining them.

Graphic novels

Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons Although a cliché, no list of graphic novels is ever complete without the mention of Alan Moore’s magnum opus. Since 1986, when the first issue of Watchmen hit stores, it has been cited as one of the first works to demonstrate maturity in terms of content and storytelling. Having won several awards, including a Hugo in 1988 in the ‘Other Forms’ category, this book stands to this day as an example of everything that could be and has been done within the medium. It is impossible to overstate the importance and impact of Watchmen on the comic book. It is a dense and beautifully gloomy story that takes place in an alternate 1985. Nixon is still President of US and the Cold War is taking a toll on the world. Breaking the norm, the superheroes are simply masked vigilantes without any actual powers (with one exception). The social and political issues raised by their existence are studied in detail. This brought pragmatism and depth previously unheard of to the genre.

The Sandman by Neil Gaiman

Many still claim that comics are silly and don’t count as “real books”. Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is your answer to such high-minded snobbery. Gaiman created a powerful and, at times, ruthless world of dark fantasy that tackled sensitive themes like death, religion, philosophy, etc pushing the medium’s boundaries like never before. Having concluded its seven year run in 1996 with issue number seventy-five, The Sandman has probably won more awards than most comic books; these include a staggering twenty six Eisner Awards and two Bram Stoker Awards!

Preacher by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon This wild epic is an example of why some comics are absolutely NOT for ‘the kids’. Preacher’s narrative is bold, unapologetic and as grown-up as it gets. Preacher handles themes of biblical proportions without so much as a hint of delicacy. The story of the small-town minister Jesse Custer who ends up possessing the ‘Word of God’ is peppered with violent humour and pop culture references in frequent doses. Not only does this book go to show that comics can receive mainstream success and acclaim without superheroes but it also paves way for a whole new genre of stories in the medium.

Maus by Art Spiegelman Maus is a landmark in the comic scene for several reasons but mostly because it’s the first graphic novel to have received a Pulitzer Prize – the award for excellence in literature. The sheer power of such an anomaly forced mainstream readers to take comics seriously. Spiegelman visually re-tells his father’s experiences in a Nazi concentration camp. This comic book visionary used animals to depict the characters in this ‘non-fiction’ fiction. The Jewish characters were mice, the Germans cats and the rest were pigs. The genius lies in his approach of such a difficult subject matter through a medium that was considered inane for as long as its existence. Maus is a unique work of art – nothing like it has ever been written before and none after. 150

Going above and beyond Rubab Nayeem Khan converses with Maher Khan and finds out more about his life sans music.

Tête-à-tête

O

ne doesn’t have to be an avid follower of local music to know Maher Khan; the name itself speaks a thousand words. After the release of Nemesis’ album Tritio Jatra in 2011, Maher created ripples in the music industry and among fans when he announced that he was quitting not just the band, but music entirely, in order to follow the path of Islam.

Tell us a little something about your life after Nemesis? Life after Nemesis has been less eventful, in all honesty. I’ve kept myself busy trying to study Islam, work, learn, spend time with the family which of course if you ask my wife, she’ll tell you otherwise!

Have you faced difficulties coping with the drastic changes?

Music was a small part of my life. Religion is very holistic; hence I study and do my research in order to keep myself occupied.

Not as much as I expected. I thought I’d suffer from some kind of withdrawal, considering that music had been my life for a long time. I suppose I got distracted with my new life. The only real difficulty I did face was not being able to see my friends from Nemesis as much as I did before. That was tough.

How did this sudden change affect you? It greatly affected my perception of life from what it was before to what it is now. Once the purpose of life starts to mean something substantial, everything else starts to take a back seat.

What is your favourite activity of the day? I’d be lying if I said my favourite activity is going to the gym, so I think I’ll go with “dinner”.

How do you look forward to celebrating Eid? The usual; spending the first day with relatives, second with friends, and the third with anything that turns out to be interesting (sleep). Most of all, I look forward to a Dhaka with breathable air and drivable roads.

What is it that brings you closer to your goals? Persistence and diligence – neither of which I’ve worked on enough. When I see that I’ve been working on something and it’s not enough it gives me perspective that maybe there’s more room for improvement.

What’s your favourite memory from your musician years? The times when we didn’t consider ourselves musicians because, back then we were just a bunch of guys doing what we really loved to do.

Music requires a lot of dedication, patience and practice. Have you been able to fill those gaps since Nemesis? Music was a small part of my life. Religion is very holistic; hence I study and do my research in order to keep myself occupied. 154

When I see that I’ve been working on something and it’s not enough it gives me perspective that maybe there’s more room for improvement. Have you ever been asked by fans to return to music? What was your reaction? Yes, I still do. However, I won’t be returning to music.

Did you ever have the urge to pick up your guitar every once in a while? Yes I have. But the fact that I don’t play doesn’t bother me.

What’s your favourite song/album by Nemesis? I love them all and that wasn’t a diplomatic answer.

A message for those who are trying to pursue the path of Islam Not all knowledge is beneficial. There are things worth investing your time and effort in; things that will benefit you now and after you’re gone. Accept information that has authentic sources and reject everything that doesn’t. Don’t believe everything you hear, read the text. 156

Of course travelling during the last days of Ramadan and Eid have its challenges. It’s best to pick a country where fasting can be easily observed. Travelling to a predominantly Muslim region during this time is a fascinating experience. In many places, including the UAE, Morocco, Tunisia, Malaysia, Indonesia and Egypt, daily life changes dramatically during the month, thereby giving visitors a chance to see a whole new side to these regions. Like any holiday period, Ramadan affects regular business routine. Many venues operate with limited hours and staff. Also, note that most sights such as the museums, shows, and certain tours may be closed on the day of Eid. Therefore, confirm and book your travel itinerary in advance to avoid any disappointments. Ramadan is all about the nightly festivities and the traditions vary from region to region. In Morocco,

streets come alive with light displays, music and sweets are offered at every intersection. The ambient ‘Khan el

Khalil’ in Cairo is a great place for shopping. In many Muslim countries Iftar tents are set up and people flock

around to break their fasts. They are often subsidised by the local municipality, offering cheap or free hygienic food. In the Gulf States, the Ramadan tents are a popular place to spend the night snacking, smoking shisha and playing games. Visiting such countries during this time provides both the fun of travelling and the ease to observe the fast. It’s also a great way to see cultural diversity among Muslim communities across the world. Going for Eid congregational prayer at the Al-Azhar mosque, Egypt or the Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem or Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque in Isfahan, Iran will undoubtedly be the most memorable part of your journey.

In most urban homes both spouses have professional careers and Eid is often seen as the long awaited break rather than an opportunity to meet up with family. I, like countless others, find this a period to escape from our traditions and venture to a foreign land.
