CATALAN MUSIC AT SÓNAR 2022

ANNA & Maotik A/V show

Friday, June 17 06:00 - 07:30 | Sónar by Night - SonarClub The very definition of a double threat, the Brazilian born artist ANNA is as acclaimed for her DJ skills as she is as a producer. Having clocked up almost 20 years of djing experience since first playing music at the age of 14, 2022 sees her take her rightful place in the top-flight of international djs. Schooled in the acid basslines and beats of classic Detroit, and with an appreciation for the darker side of European techno, nonetheless a set from ANNA always has one goal in mind - to keep you dancing till the lights come up.

Arca

Saturday, June 18 23:25 - 00:25 | Sónar by Night - SonarPub by Thunder Bitch Arca is one of the world’s most transformative musical talents. Since breaking through with her 2012 EPs ‘Stretch 1’ and ‘Stretch 2’, she’s created an unprecedented body of work drawing from club music, experimental noise, and the ballad tradition of her native Venezuela, while reaching beyond music to encompass performance, visual art, and technology. As a collaborator with Björk, Kanye West, and FKA twigs, she’s stretched contemporary music’s sonic boundaries and helped set the sound of her era.

AWWZ

Thursday, June 16 14:30 - 16:00 | Sónar by Day - SonarVillage by Estrella Damm One of the key figures in the current local scene. Through her projects in the studio - especially her collaborations- and her DJ sets, the Catalan has become one of the standard-bearers for urban music on club dancefloors. AWWZ has pioneered what she’s named “shower music”, an expressive and sensual style of music that encompasses genres such as rap, r&b or even dub. Recently she’s even flirted with experimental hip-hop (check her latest single “Naughty” with Lauren Nine).

b1n0 Live A/V

Thursday, June 16 14:30 - 15:30 | Sónar by Day - SonarHall b1n0’s delicate electronica has a homespun feel to it. Weaving together glitches, pulses, crackles and glossy basslines, the Catalan duo often sound more like artisans than ‘producers’. Their latest EP, ‘bi’, released in November 2021, expanded the template from their self-titled debut album, with 5 tracks that each feature a distinct vocal contribution from Catalan artists: El Petit De Cal Eril, Ferran Palau, Meritxel Nedderman, Tarta Relena & Marina Herlop.

DJohnston

Friday, June 17 22:40 - 23:50 | Sónar by Night - SonarClub Taking his stage name from the cult outsider musician Daniel Johnston, Pere Martí’s come a long way since the mid-2000s, when you would have found him mixing indie rock and electro music in one of Barcelona’s many small bars and clubs. A true DJs’ DJ, locals in Barcelona know by now that it’s worth turning up early to hear him warm up the crowd at Razzmatazz on any given weekend, with a typically sultry, trippy mix of records spanning the robo-erotica of Italo disco, Rotterdam-style electro, and sensual acid.

El Bobe

Friday, June 17 17:10 - 18:00 | Sónar by Day - SonarPark by DICE El Bobe started recording music in primary school, using Audacity and a second-hand microphone he bought online to record his very first songs. 10 years later he’ll take to the stage in his hometown. The young rapper (still just 19) mixes drill - the dark, murky sounds of “Ronaldinho” and “Aventador” - with lighter, afro-influenced productions - his breakthrough hit, the airy, heartfelt “Ella” - and a liquid, silver-tongued flow that spills over syllables and wraps around street metaphors.

ETM

Saturday, June 18 22:00 - 23:10 | Sónar by Night - SonarPub by Thunder Bitch Reggaeton and 90’s trance may seem like worlds apart, but as the experiments of DJ Python and others have shown, in todays exciting electronic climate, the clash of genres is exactly what keeps things interesting. So it is for this young Barcelona based producer, who’s twin influences of trap, and Eurodance classics like Alice Deejay, blend in his own inimitable work. Undoubtedly one of the freshest voices in an ever inspiring scene.

11

Gela

Thursday, June 16 13:00 - 14:30 i 20:15 - 20:40 | Sónar by Day - SonarVillage by Estrella Damm A little charisma goes a long way in electronic music, especially under the mid-June sun in Barcelona. Gela brings just that. From old-skool styles to spacey or even Brazilian sounds, her palette of influences is wide, and tends towards leftfield. With a passport full with stamps from clubs across the world, Sónar by Day will be the perfect stage to introduce her to a wider audience.

Hamill Industries & Kiani del Valle

Saturday, June 18 18:15 - 19:00 | Sónar by Day - SonarComplex In October 2021, creative studio Hamill Industries, dancer and choreographer Kiani Del Valle and researchers Stefano Rosso, Martí de Castro and Javier Ruiz from the UPC (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) presented “Engendered Otherness - A symbiotic AI dance ensemble” at S+T+ARTS AI and Music Festival. The collaborative project - a “co-creation” - brought together three leaders in their respective fields for a unique audiovisual choreography experience.

IHHH & Desilence Live A/V

Friday, June 17 14:00 - 14:45 | Sónar by Day - SonarComplex “Music is the space between the notes,” or so said Claude Debussy (or Miles Davis, depending on who you listen to). A dogma that Barcelonabased musician Carlos Falanga, who records and performs as IHHH, would likely adhere to. On his most recent album, “Consequences of Absence Of Light”, he tears holes in a solo piano piece, ripping through the fabric of the music with slashes of glitch and distortion. At Sónar 2022, he’ll recreate the record live, together with pianist Toni Saigi and digital visual artists Desilence (who worked with John Talabot for his immersive ‘Magma’ show premiered at Sónar at IDEAL).

CATALAN MUSIC AT SÓNAR 2022

Ivy Barkakati

Friday, June 17 13:00 - 14:30 i 21:00 - 21:30 | Sónar by Day - SonarVillage by Estrella Damm American by birth but adopted, dare we say it, by Barcelona. It’s been 10 years since Ivy Barkakati settled in the city, during which she’s become one of the most dependable and versatile DJs in the local scene. A producer and vocalist as well as a DJ, Ivy has released her own music on labels like Butter Sessions and Planet Trip, and has collaborated with the likes of Cardopusher, Roza Terenzi, and Phran (as IVAN).

CATALAN MUSIC AT SÓNAR 2022

15

Juicy Bae

Friday, June 17 16:15 - 17:00 | Sónar by Day - SonarPark by DICE The adjectives used to describe global trap music - romantic, emotionally raw, unfiltered - are the same ones that were once used in reference to flamenco. Juicy Bae makes music that joins the dots between the flamenco she grew up listening to in Seville and the Spanish trap scene: songs for the lovesick, the jilted, and the broken-hearted. The 24 year old wears her heart on her sleeve like Andalusian flamenco legend Camarón but knows how to ride a beat like A$AP Rocky or Ñengo Flow.

CATALAN MUSIC AT SÓNAR 2022

Lucient

Saturday, June 18 21:30 - 22:20 | Sónar by Night - SonarClub A multi-talented DJ with an encyclopedic knowledge of dance music, Lucient’s a difficult artist to pin down to any one particular style. On any given night he might reach for twinkling IDM or sunset Balearic, or maybe you’ll catch him in the mood for classic house mixed into global sounds and shimmering ambient. Or maybe he’ll stick to the kind of leftfield techno that dances around four-to-thefloor. And if he’s playing one of his marathon 12-hour sessions at Barcelona’s LAUT, you’ll get all of the above… and more.

CATALAN MUSIC AT SÓNAR 2022

Maria Arnal i Marcel Bagés

Saturday, June 18 18:30 - 19:30 | Sónar by Day - SonarHall Crowned by critics as one of the best albums of 2021, Clamor has turned Maria Arnal and Marcel Bagés into one of the key names to understand the present and future of music in Catalonia. Hiperutopia is a cosmic journey through the Clamor universe, created especially for Sónar 2022. A heavy and atmospheric staging of the album in which the songs expand to incorporate a storm of human choirs and geological sounds. A unique opportunity to witness one of today’s most ambitious and exciting live performances in an unforgettable, unprecedented format that will feature the 36 voices from the Cor de Noies de l’Orfeó Català.

MBODJ

Saturday, June 18 21:30 - 22:30 | Sónar by Night - SonarLab by Resident Advisor A founding member of Barcelona’s Jokkoo collective, Maguette Dieng is clearly enamoured with the possibilities that the new wave of pan-African club music provides. Jookloo have made a name in Barcelona with parties that explore a radically different vision of African music, one that’s gritty and dense, without sacrificing a drop of energy. As MBODJ, Dieng is especially unafraid to explore harder and more aggressive sounds taken from across the spectrum, laced with percussion and unfamiliar textures.

Miret (Live)

Friday, June 17 14:30 - 16:00 | Sónar by Day - SonarVillage by Estrella Damm Travelling without moving. Stepping into Miret’s music, a whole world unveils itself, a world created by years of travel across the world. Listening to Miret’s downtempo music is like traversing a strange new landscape, created by his analog synthesizers and the handfuls of samples he’s collected during his travels. It’s a place also inspired by the fertile imagination of the Mexican-born artist, who lives and works in Barcelona, piecing together his ‘nomadic’ global sound from different rhythms. He’ll bring himself, and a little bit of everywhere he’s been, to Sónar by Day this year.

CATALAN MUSIC AT SÓNAR 2022

Morad

Saturday, June 18 17:50 - 18:40 | Sónar by Day - SonarPark by DICE In a time when the algorithm reigns over quality and ‘trap’ stars are more often than not the product of an aggressive marketing campaign, Morad’s success is the triumph of authenticity over the fake. Without a major record company, or radio play, this young rapper has become the biggest artists in the country thanks to his ability to connect to his peers with his street level rhymes about life on the periphery.

Pedro Vian & Mana

Saturday, June 18 14:30 - 15:30 | Sónar by Day - SonarHall Pedro Vian heads up Modern Obscure Music, the experimental Barcelona label who have drawn attention with their PRSNT compilation, a series of 30 second tracks recorded by artists such as Laurie Spiegel, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Sónar 2022 artists Lafawndah and Lyra Pramuk, which was reimagined as a video capsule for SónarCCCB 2021. This time round he’ll be joined on stage by Daniele Mana, the Turin-based artist who explored minimalist, beatless, almost classical textures via an album and EP under his surname for Hyperdub.

CATALAN MUSIC AT SÓNAR 2022

Rojuu

Thursday, June 16 16:00 - 17:00 | Sónar by Day - SonarPark by DICE A few years ago, emo-trap might have sounded like a joke. Fastforward to 2021, and it’s anything but. Catalan rapper Rojuu is one of the pioneers of a genre that takes cues from the gonzo trap of Rae Sremmurd, the impossible romanticism of manga, alternative rap icons like Yung Lean and Bladee and yes, a certain mid-2000s emo aesthetic. His lyrics are a riposte to the flexing and braggadocio of the drill scene: shy and inward-focused, set to music that’s gently scattered with sadness.

Simona

Thursday, June 16 16:00 - 16:30 | Sónar by Day - SonarVillage by Estrella Damm Simona Sibilla’s collage of styles has fuelled her ascendancy. Born and raised in Argentina, she cultivated her Latin influences in her hometown of Mendoza before settling in Barcelona. Her multifaceted sound dances between good and evil, applying melodic mutations that represent everyday life, intimacy, authenticity and power. “BALI”, her first single, put her in the spotlight as an emerging artist in 2019, when she shared stages with artists like Girl Ultra or Louta. Producing her tracks alongside Valuki & Black Jagg, since 2020, she’s been performing with a full live band.

CATALAN MUSIC AT SÓNAR 2022

Tarta Relena

Thursday, June 16 16:00 - 16:45 | Sónar by Day - SonarComplex The junction between tradition and modernity has become a fertile ground for musical experimentation in recent years, and there are few who represent that more clearly than Barcelona vocal and electronic duo Tarta Relena. Marta Torrella and Helena Ros started out messing around with their voices as teenagers, drawing on their choral education to put together a capella versions of their favourite songs. They found themselves on stage at El Pumarejo, Barcelona’s foremost community-run DIY venue, and one thing just seemed to lead to another.

Virginie

Saturday, June 18 14:25 - 15:50 i 21:35 - 22:00 | Sónar by Day - SonarVillage by Estrella Damm A restless member of the Barcelona underground, both solo and as half of the duo Shakti Alliance with Troya Modet. Virginie, also known as Vir, is one of the city’s most flexible and talented DJs, drawing on her vast record collection - she’s been an avid record buyer since the 1990s, when she moved from Caracas to New York. The Venezuelan-born DJ is one of the most exploratory diggers in Barcelona, mixing up deep, pumping house with dusty soul, disco and music from around the world.
