news from Yorkshire and Humber each had stood up to the extreme water levels. However, it is clear from the flooding experienced in some parts of the region that existing infrastructure did not, in every case, provide adequate protection to many homes and businesses. ICE will be working with other stakeholders to improve local understanding of flood risk, and events are currently being planned with affected communities on this topic in the coming months. Nick Chamberlain ICE Yorkshire and Humber Chair We have received a fantastic number of entries to the 2016 ICE Yorkshire and Humber Awards. The variety of work undertaken in the region is astounding, with schemes covering a range of sectors, values and from across all parts of the region. The awards will be presented by Sir John Armitt CBE, President of the ICE, at the annual Gala Dinner on Friday 11 March in Sheffield. Tickets are selling well - if you haven’t booked your place yet, please do so quickly!

Each year, the Regional Committee aims to organise a programme of knowledge events which will appeal to our members. It would seem from attendance at some events in recent years that we have not always organised attractive topics, delivered in an engaging format, at a suitable time or in the correct place. To aid the development of an attractive programme for 2016-17, ICE will be undertaking a short online survey – please watch out for this, and let us know your views, so that we can develop a programme to meet your knowledge needs.

Our Regional Member of Council, Richard Dew, will stand down from ICE Council in November 2016, after six years. I would like to thank Richard for all of his work over recent years in representing the members of the Yorkshire and Humber region and helping to shape the future direction of the ICE. Nominations are being sought to replace Richard – I would urge all corporately qualified and technician members to consider standing for election to Council. Nominations close on 31 March 2016. Finally, many members will be familiar with Bob Bennett, one of our Membership Development Officers. Bob has served the ICE for many years, not least in assisting a huge number of members to prepare for their Professional Review. Bob left the ICE at the end of January and I would like to thank him for his tireless efforts over the years and wish him well for the future.

With so many entries, schemes were shortlisted based on their written submissions. The list of shortlisted entries can be found on the ICE website. Each of the shortlisted entries presented their scheme to the judging panel and were questioned on a number of aspects of their project. Many recently completed schemes were exposed to the significant flooding in many parts of the region over the Christmas period. It was heartening to see how well

The panel, which comprises a group of leading infrastructure and policy experts from across the three northern regions, held its first meeting at KPMG's offices in Leeds in December. At the meeting, the panel members set out their key objectives, designed to get the best infrastructure solutions from the Northern Powerhouse. A key aim is to ensure the Northern Powerhouse is more than Manchester and considers the North in its entirety, and the panel aims to shape the implementation of the initiative. It will draw upon the vast expertise of local members to inform the development of infrastructure priorities under the Northern Powerhouse initiative, and to ensure that its benefits are felt across the north. The panel is chaired by Richard Threlfall, Head of Infrastructure at KPMG, supported by Vice Chair Jonathan Spruce, who also chairs ICE’s national Transport Panel. Damian Kilburn, Divisional Director at Pell

Frischmann and Immediate Past Chair of ICE Yorkshire and Humber, Professor Denise Bower of the University of Leeds and Julie Hurley, Director of Transport for Sheffield City Region, complete the strong line-up from Yorkshire and Humber. The Northern Powerhouse Panel will enable the ICE to make practical and positive contributions to the future planning and development of infrastructure in Yorkshire and Humber. Working with stakeholders across the North, the panel will add to our own work on the Northern Powerhouse. The panel has begun its work by preparing a joint response to the National Infrastructure Commission’s call for evidence on Connecting Northern Cities, in which it urged Government to adopt a “whole network” approach, with investment based on a comprehensive, integrated strategy. Whilst identifying the need for a more even handed distribution of spend on infrastructure, it also called for a host of system improvements including an integrated ticketing system for the North, simpler fare structures and integrated timetables.

First prize for Geotechnical Engineer Hubert

ICE Yorkshire and Humber graduate member Hubert Pompecki has won the Yorkshire Geotechnical Presentation Competition. Hubert, a Geotechnical Engineer from Atkins in Leeds, was awarded first prize of £100 for his presentation "Monitored embankment trial for a heavy haul road in Tengiz, Kazakhstan” at the competition final held in York in December.

audience was quite a challenge but I feel that taking part in the competition was an invaluable lesson and a great opportunity to build confidence as well as practice presentation skills. I would strongly encourage others to take part in similar events in the future.” Clare Brint, one of this year’s judges commented: “It was super to see the range of presentations from our young geotechnical engineers and the engagement from the industry here in the Yorkshire and Humber region with a really good attendance on the night."

The Yorkshire Geotechnical Group Presentation Competition is open to young geotechnical engineers (aged 30 or under), and aims to encourage them to prepare and give a technical presentation.

"Learning how to present our work to others is a really important skill which takes practice and I was really pleased that so many young engineers, with the support of their employers, put the time and effort in to taking part, it will serve them well in the future.”

Competitors submit an abstract of their presentation and finalists are then selected to give a 10-minute talk emphasising the geotechnical aspects of the work, judged by a panel of professional engineers. A landmark 19 entries were received this year, with six finalists being shortlisted.

Second place went to Nabeel Bux from Coffey in Harrogate, who received £60, with joint runners up David Budden (Byland Engineering), Anton Dmitriev (University of Leeds), Ruth Jacobs (WSP | Parsons Brinkerhoff) and Ana Rita Romero (TSP), who each received £35.

Hubert said: “It was a fantastic evening and I found the entire experience very enjoyable and rewarding. Giving a presentation in front of a technical-minded

Adrian is an Associate at Pell Frischmann Consulting Engineers in Wakefield. He joined the ICE Ambassador scheme in September 2015. Adrian said: "Being an ICE Ambassador is full of rewards. Explaining to students about different types of engineering be it electrical, chemical, civil, structural, mechanical etc. gives them the opportunity to explore engineering as a future career. Attending recent careers events at Outwood Grange Carlton in Barnsley and the John Smeaton Academy, Leeds, resulted in hundreds of conversations about the roles of engineers and specifically my role as a civil engineer. Being able to engage 10 students at a time for 5 minutes keeps you on your toes with questions as well as testing your presentation style! I also tweet live from schools events and share the great work the Ambassadors are doing to promote the STEM subjects.” If you would like to find out more about the ICE Ambassador scheme, come along to our ‘Meet Greet & Eat’ event on 7 April in Sheffield.
