New ICE Y&H Award

We welcome your comments, letters and articles.

The Impact Award demonstrates the positive impact of civil engineering on society.

Please contact us at: iceyandh@ice.org.uk Follow us on Twitter: Welcome to the January edition of ICE Local. The Committee and Regional Education Team have continued to work within the region to promote civil engineering to the Local Enterprise Partnerships and Chambers of Commerce and also undertake activities within local schools. A highlight of the past month was having the pleasure to be one of the judges for the Centenary and Smeaton award submissions. The shortlisted entrants all gave a 15 minute presentation followed by a short question and answer session enabling them to promote their scheme beyond the written submission made. The quality of the presentations and the civil engineering interest of the schemes was to a very high standard, this not only made them interesting but also provided me with new experiences and knowledge – contributing to my CPD for the year! I am now looking forward to determining the final winner with the other judges and presenting the awards at the Gala Dinner at The Majestic Hotel, Harrogate, on 15 March. We are again looking for your views and experience to support the Regional

Advisory Board in producing an updated State of the Nation report on Transport. Much has changed since the last report in 2008 with recent public debate dominated by the future of our airports and the opportunities and challenges presented by high speed rail. If you would like to contribute further information can be found on the ICE website at: ice.org.uk/Information-resources/Infrastructurepolicy-and-reports/State-of-the-nation In a drive to reduce travel costs and CO2 the committee has been utilising virtual meetings to enable the committee and sub groups to meet without the need to travel. In December the committee’s Executive group used the ICE’s new WebEx service to meet. This proved to be successful and will be used again for these and other group meetings. The platform enabled members to join in securely by telephone and online with video and allowed documents to be shared simultaneously on their computer screens.

Coming soon...the new Impact Award We have all heard the statement ‘engineers save more lives than doctors’, but is there anything else that has made you stop and think that you would like to share with others? Could you pass on what inspires you as a civil engineer or something you have been inspired by? ICE Yorkshire and Humber will soon be welcoming submissions for the new Impact Award. Submissions should aim to demonstrate the positive impact of civil engineering on society, for example through engineering excellence, innovation or community engagement. The submission will need to be no more than one side of A4, comprising 1-4 photographs and a maximum of 200 words. Entry will be open to all and can be a personal impact or a reflection on the impact of civil engineering in general. More details will be published shortly or you can contact us at: iceyandh@ice.org.uk

Regional Achievers John Collins

Hayley Smith

On Thursday 22 November ICE Member John Collins was presented with the IET Sir Henry Royce for Young Professionals Award at the IET Ambition and Achievement Awards 2012 Ceremony, London.

2012 was an exciting year for Graduate member Hayley Smith, Structural Engineer for Mason Clark Associates. She not only won the local Construction Best Practice Award for Young Achiever of the Year in October, but also went on to win the National Young Achiever Award at the Construction Best Practice Awards Dinner held on 30 November in London.1

The award was established in 1990 by the Sir Henry Royce Memorial Foundation. A gold medal, certificate and £250 is given by the IET and the Sir Henry Royce Memorial Foundation to a young professional who has excelled in the workplace within the last 12 months. John's award was given in recognition of his design work to replace the main span bearings of the Humber Bridge. This complex project has required detailed understanding of the bridge’s behaviour, formulation and appraisal of refurbishment or replacement options and detailed design. Construction will start in spring/summer 2013. Suzanne Flynn FIET, Chair of the Awards and Prizes Committee of the IET said: “The Sir Henry Royce Award was set up in 1990 in collaboration with the Sir Henry Royce Memorial Foundation and is presented annually to a young professional who has achieved excellence in the previous year. Exceptionally, this year two awards were made; one of which was to Mr John Collins, Chartered Civil Engineer at Ove Arup & Partners. Mr Collins is a worthy winner for his enthusiasm for his work, technical understanding and problem solving skills which have been demonstrated in his role of designing a replacement for the Humber Bridge’s main span A-frame rocker bearings.”

In addition to this Hayley also reached the ICE Papers Competition final with her paper entitled “The Use of Treehouses in Developing Countries to Help Solve a Housing Crisis”. To aid her research she undertook a visit to Ndhiwa in Kenya, where she interviewed local residents and visited their houses to assess the condition of housing in the area. Before the visit Hayley raised money for the charity “Team Kenya”, who used donations to help fund pupils through school and buy vital resources such as school equipment, clothes and food for those that are in most need of help. Whilst in Ndhiwa Hayley worked with the charity to build a new hut at the charity base and promoted engineering to youths by volunteering at the maths and science homework club. She also gave workshops with female students to give them confidence to carry on with their education and discussed the advantages of those subjects necessary to become an engineer. Locally Hayley is also an ICE and STEMNET Schools Ambassador, and she visits primary and secondary schools to promote civil and structural engineering, highlighting the importance of science, technology, engineering and maths.2 1

Five things you can do... three reasons to do them... one possible outcome Five three one is a flagship business to business campaign charged with offering hassle free access to mentoring, apprenticeships and work placements, amongst others, as the means to help boost local growth. It aims to address skills and employment gaps within individual sectors, including high demand for senior engineers, difficulties employing to certain positions within the industry, influencing students to take up apprenticeships and training within the industry as well as gender imbalances, most notably less than 11% young women going into engineering. The Chair of the Leeds City Region Employment and Skills Board, John Anderson of BT explains: “Leeds City Region LEP has recognised the need to nurture and develop the engineering sector across the region. As part of the five three one campaign, we work in partnership to promote positive advice and guidance to young people starting out on a career.”

The campaign is designed to encourage work experience placements for those who are looking for a new challenge and champions apprenticeships for all. We would like to encourage more engineering businesses in the city region to sign up to five three one. We will be running a road show and will be visiting all areas in the region to promote the campaign, including as part of the Wakefield, Calderdale, Bradford, Barnsley business weeks as well as other events across the city region. The campaign is nurtured by the Leeds City Region LEP working side by side with Job Centre Plus, National Apprenticeship Service, New Enterprise Allowance Service, Education Business Partnerships, Leeds City Region Skills network, private sector partners and local authorities across the area. For more information on how your business can benefit from the campaign please visit: leedscityregion.gov.uk/fivethreeone
