PUBLISHER Andy Clark CREATIVE DIRECTOR Constanza Mtz.
Happy April hope that nobody managed to fool you! Of course, it’s Easter in a couple of weeks, which means the beginning of the holiday season. It won’t be long before it’s almost impossible to find a table at our favourite café or restaurant – but it also means a massive boost for the local economy, which can’t be bad. In fact we have noticed a number of great new clubs, bars, restaurants and salons opening lately, which is par for the course pre-season, except that these are almost all expansions by talented people who already have one or more successful business. Given the fact that these folks have worked up a loyal clientele in good times and bad, we can only predict great things for these new ventures. Just the news that we like to report. As usual, this Summer we will have some wonderful live music events to enjoy and one that we are particularly looking forward to is Foreigner. Unbelievably this band, which has had hit after hit with tracks like ‘Feels Like the First Time’, ‘Cold As Ice’, ‘Jukebox Hero’ and ‘I Want to Know What Love Is’, is celebrating its 40th birthday. The line-up might have changed over the years, but one thing you can be sure of is that this is one group that puts on a fantastic live show. We are all grateful to those smart people at Crazy Music for making sure that Puente Romano’s Club de Tenis formed part of this year’s world tour. Just visit crazymusicproductions.com for tickets. Be quick because this event is sure to sell out fast.
In this issue we also take a look at the career of Sir Ridley Scott, whose latest movie, Alien: Covenant will be released in May. It seems that 40 is a lucky number this month, because Scott is also celebrating an anniversary this year; his first feature film, The Duellists, was released in 1977. We can’t think of many directors who have produced so many groundbreaking movies, from the original Alien, through Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise and Gladiator to 2015’s box office smash, The Martian. The man is 80 later this year and he is still working like a dog – can’t help but admire that kind of dedication and focus. We were intrigued to hear that Banksy has opened a hotel in Bethlehem. Naturally, this graffiti artist turned artistic entrepreneur can’t help but be controversial, calling the establishment The Walled Off Hotel and boasting that it enjoys the worst view in the world, namely the hulking wall that separates the Israeli and Palestinian territories. It has already proved a huge hit, so if you’re heading out to the Middle East and fancy spending a night or two in one of its 10 rooms you’ll need to make a booking pronto. Have a great Easter! ‘Til next time... Andy Clark

THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES By KJ Elsdon
Whether you’re a pensioner or a popobsessed teenager it’s likely that you will be familiar with some of Foreigner’s hits. From the early days of ‘Feels Like the First Time’ and ‘Cold As Ice’, this British-American band has enjoyed the kind of enduring popularity that most artists would kill for. Now that they’re heading for Marbella it’s likely that most of us will be looking through our record collections and experiencing the joy of Foreigner all over again.
C
an it really be 40 years? It must be, because Foreigner has announced a tour to celebrate this magnificent anniversary and have chosen to include Marbella’s Puente Romano during the European leg. The event, on Sunday the 11th of June, is likely to be one of the musical highlights of the summer and tickets are bound to sell out fast. In these days of disposable pop, when careers tend to be as short as Bob Geldof’s temper, a 40th anniversary is something to be celebrated and the current line-up of Foreigner is determined to mark it with something that the fans will remember for a very long time. With a whopping 10 multi-platinum selling albums and 16 Top 40 hit singles, it’s no wonder that music critics and fans alike feel confident that tickets for this once-in-a-lifetime tour will be like gold dust. Started in 1976, Foreigner owes a great deal of its early success to founder and lead guitarist, Mick Jones. His songwriting talent and ability to create hooks that sold albums in huge numbers was instrumental in catapaulting Foreigner from being another staple of America’s AOR radio stations to global stardom. The band’s first, incredibly successful outing was followed by four more critically praised and bestselling albums, culminating in 1984’s Agent Provocateur, which contained the hit for which Foreigner would be most famous, ‘I Want to Know What Love Is’. Having achieved world domination the band which,

after a number of personnel changes, now consisted of Jones along with Lou Gramm on lead vocals and percussion, Rick Wills on bass and backing vocals and Dennis Elliott on drums, decided to take a break. In the late 1980s both Jones and Gramm both worked on solo projects but in 1990 Mick Jones brought a new singer into the mix. Johnny Edwards, who had formerly sung with Buster Brown, Montrose, King Cobra, Northrup and Wild Horses, was joined by Wills and Elliott, along with Terry Thomas on guitar, who would also produce the band’s next album and Eddie Mack on harmonica. This new generation released Unusual Heat in 1991 but, during the 1992 Los Angeles riots, a further unprecedented chapter in the unpredictable history of Foreigner was written. Locked in together in the Sunset Marquis Hotel in West Hollywood, Mick Jones and Lou Gramm set aside their differences and agreed to give their artistic relationship another try. This reunion resulted in a further album, 1994’s Mr. Moonlight, before Gramm and Jones once more parted company. Jones decided to take some time off before floating a new line-up in 2004 which resulted in a number of popular
22
live performances which would later be compiled into a live album, Extended Versions, a compelling record of the excitement that Foreigner could still generate when playing live, featuring the band’s new vocalist, Kelly Hansen, who had proved a sterling addition to the line-up. Jones was so encouraged by the amount of interest that, in 2009, new material was released. Can’t Slow Down consisted of 13 brand new tracks of which two (‘When It Comes to Love’ and ‘In Pieces’) reached the Top 20 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Chart. Jones had been lucky to secure the services of his stepson, Mark Ronson, better known for his collaborations with Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen, as coproducer. More recently, Juke Box Heroes, a new compilation of digitally recorded Foreigner hits, spent over thirty weeks in the Billboard Top 200 in 2013/2014. In September 2013, it hit Number Four in the Nielsen SoundScan Top 200 Catalogue Chart, an astonishing feat that allowed Foreigner’s catalogue sales that week to eclipse those of AC/DC, Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Van Halen and most of their Classic Rock peers.
It seems that 2013 was something of an annus mirabilis for Jones, since he was also inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall Of Fame. A multi-talented and multidimensional ‘musician’s musician’, Jones has written songs such as ‘Bad Love’ with Eric Clapton and ‘Dreamer’ with Ozzy Osbourne. He has also produced albums for others, including Billy Joel’s Storm Front and Van Halen’s 5150. A Grammy and Golden Globe-nominated songwriter, Jones is the winner of the prestigious British Ivor Novello Songwriter Award for ‘The Flame Still Burns’, the soundtrack music for the film, Still Crazy. Now Jones is back on the road with Foreigner, celebrating 40 years with a band that has seen more than its fair share of hard times, but is still capable of packing in the crowds. “Our music has touched a lot of people worldwide,” he says. “Unwittingly, we’re weaved into the fabric of people’s lives.” With hits like ‘Feels Like the First Time’, ‘Hot Blooded’, ‘Juke Box Hero’, ‘Head Games’, ‘Waiting For A Girl Like You’, ‘That Was Yesterday’, ‘Double Vision’,

‘Urgent’ and the perennial favourite, ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ in their pockets, it’s a racing certainty that Marbella residents will be queuing around the block for tickets. Kicking off on March the 31st in Mulvane, Kansas, the tour heads for Europe in May before leaving for Canada in July and then back to the USA. The date at Puente Romano will be the last European event, so music fans can look forward to the band being on top of their game.

This is one classy track from a nice combination of artists who all contribute their characteristic skills. The perfect track to listen to when you’re winding down after a hard night in the clubs! A groundbreaking entertainment concept is about to open in Marbella! It really will be something that we’ve never seen before, but anyone who has visited Las Vegas will recognise the idea immediately – it’s a combination of restaurant, nightclub and show all in one grand, luxurious space.
T
he innovators behind Teatro spent considerable time finding the right location (it will be where Dreamers once existed) with enough space to fulfil their plans. The project is daring and adventurous, and as you may imagine, has required a massive budget to create such a wonderland of the imagination. The artistic director Fidel Buika wants to provide Marbella with an entertainment venue that unites top class music and performance with a first rate gastronomy. A feast for the senses in every way!
TEATRO is a place where there is always something magical happening. It’s a space where you can change and be whoever you want to be. TEATRO is not a theatre, although it looks like it. Nothing is what it seems at TEATRO - it is the excuse to escape from the mundane.
28
However, compared the brash, neonilluminated announcements of the Las Vegas strip, Teatro plans to be rather more enigmatic and mysterious in its communications with Marbella residents that will highlight the exclusivity of Teatro for “nocturnal thrill seekers” and at the same time make the point that you can have the same quality of nightlife in Marbella as that enjoyed by the denizens of Manhattan. The outdoor terrace will be a stage for international acts of similar quality and status as Cirque du Soleil and the production teams of top West End and Broadway musicals will also be bringing shows to Teatro. Guests will be able to enjoy a show whilst dining. Inside, there is a vast nightclub that will also host show-style performances. So, who are the people behind this amazing project?
fabulous team that we have put together. It is a very professional team that believes in the magic of this project, and I’d also say that it is an artistic team representing diverse areas of the arts as well as being the variety of styles from different parts of the world. The team is a family at Teatro.
Fidel Buika, the artistic director and choreographer, is a renowned Spanish dancer and choreographer from Barcelona who trained in New York & Los Angeles and worked in London. He is currently the exclusive choreographer for NIKE’s ad campaigns in Portugal, Spain and Italy. He has also worked with Tom Jones and Gloria Gaynor and appeared on Operación Triunfo, the Spanish show that preceded X Factor and American Idol. We asked him some questions about Teatro and his role in it. What made you join this project? I believed in it right from the beginning, so I didn’t think twice about saying yes. I also saw a large group of professionals behind it and a challenge for my professional career. It’s a great experience to create something new and different, plus I’ve always been passionate about the people of the southern Spain, so it’s great to be living here. What does Teatro mean to you? I loved the fact that it is being called ‘Teatro’ because theatre has been my life for 22 years and this particular project brings together magic, illusions, dreams and the whole gamut of experiences that the theatre has always given audiences. But, this time it adds in gastronomy and excellent hospitality. Tell us what Teatro will be like for its guests? Our slogan is “Live It to Believe It”; that is, come and try it, just enter this new experience and live it. There will be many things inside Teatro and it’s difficult to describe them all. I can say that our guests will have a very unique experience and it will be quite unlike anything that traditional theatregoers have seen, because of the added nightclub and restaurant elements. You must have a good team? I am very happy and proud of the
What has your creative process been for putting this project together? In truth it has been six months of very hard work that has included lots of changes, tough decisions and stress. But, it has all been worth it now that we can see the finished product. It is always valuable to take the time to create something new and not be afraid to make changes along the way. Being creative, especially when it’s a completely new concept that has a large element of risk attached to it requires courage as well as the ability to stay true to the notions of fantasy, joy and dreams that we want to embrace and give to our guests. Much of the success of getting to the finish line with this project is thanks to my great colleague and very talented artists Eduardo Engonga. I feel we’ve done some great work together on the musical and artistic direction of this project and he’s like a soul mate to me when it comes to enthusiasm and energy for the Teatro project. You don’t always get to meet somebody who thinks the same way as you do, but Eduardo and I are completely in sync.
Iraida Peña a year ago he returned to Spain to star in “Sister Act” and now he is part of the Teatro project. I’d also like to mention Iraida Peña who is our assistant choreographer. She is originally from Málaga and has extensive professional dance training in flamenco, ballet and contemporary dance. She has worked with numerous singers in New York, London and LA and for the last four years she has been the assistant choreographer at Marbella’s Starlite festival. We can’t wait for Teatro to open. As its slogan says, you have to live it to believe it, so be there when it opens! teatromarbella.com
Tell us a bit more about Eduardo Endonga and other team members. Eduardo is a Spanish musician and actor of Guinean origins. He began his career by making albums in Spain and then he got into musicals outside Spain, such as “Cats”. He’s had a great singing career in France and has been on Mexican television for five years as well and also graduated in drama from Mexican theatre school. About Eduardo Engonga

Ridley Scott:
ADVERTISING ALIEN For someone who is only months away from his 80th birthday, Ridley Scott certainly isn’t taking his foot off the accelerator. Not only is his latest project, Alien: Covenant due for release in May, he appears to be determined to be part of that rare breed – an octogenarian with plans for the future. , Five years on from Prometheus, his last outing with the Alien franchise, Ridley Scott is to direct its sequel. Prometheus was actually a prequel to the action depicted in Scott’s original 1979 masterpiece the Alien story, which proved a massive hit with sci-fi and horror movie geeks and has experienced the same kind of traction enjoyed by Star Wars. It seems that the world can’t get enough of the grumpy old extra-terrestrial whose main modus operandi seems to be reproducing and if that involves laying its infernal eggs in the stomach of unsuspecting humans, then that’s just tough luck. If you still feel traumatised by the sight of the fast moving baby alien breaking out of John Hurt’s chest cavity then this is maybe not for you, but cheer up – there’s a Ridley Scott movie for practically every taste. Few directors have covered so many bases in their careers. From 1977’s The Duellists, the costume drama that kick-started his career as a director of feature films to The Martian, 2015’s most
30
successful sci-fi movie and his highest grossing movie to date, there has been no genre that he hasn’t attempted. Born on November the 30th 1937 in South Shields, County Durham, Ridley studied at the Royal College of Art before embarking on a career in advertising. In 1968, along with his brother Tony, Alan Parker and Hugh Hudson who would all become luminaries of British cinema, he founded RSA (Ridley Scott
“I DON’T GET ATTACHED TO ANYTHING. I’M LIKE A GOOD ANTIQUE DEALER. I’M PREPARED TO SELL MY MOST VALUABLE TABLE.” Associates). The company created some of the most memorable adverts in history, most notably the 1973 Hovis ‘Bike Round’ commercial, which was set in Yorkshire but was actually filmed in Gold Hill, Shaftesbury, Dorset. This proved such a success that it secured RSA’s success virtually single-handedly and, in a 2006 poll, was named the UK’s alltime favourite advertisement. RSA was also famously responsible for the 1970s and 1980s rebranding of Chanel No. 5, which had fallen out of favour and was considered passé.
Apart from Ridley’s younger brother Tony, who would go on to direct a number of Hollywood blockbusters, including True Romance, Crimson Tide and the 2009 remake of The Taking of Pelham 123, RSA has since benefited from the talent of three other members of the Scott family, namely Ridley’s two sons Jake and Luke and his daughter, Jordan. Naturally, Scott’s skill at imagining and directing were such that it was
inevitable that he would eventually try his hand at feature films. The Duellists, released in 1977, won an award at the Cannes Film Festival for Best Debut Film, an auspicious start to his career. A period piece set during the Napoleonic Wars and concerning the bellicose relationship between two French Hussar
“I THINK, AT THE END OF THE DAY, FILMMAKING IS A TEAM, BUT EVENTUALLY THERE’S GOT TO BE A CAPTAIN.” officers, The Duellists might not have set the box office on fire in the manner of some of his later movies, but it was critically praised and effectively set the scene for a glittering Hollywood future. As an expert in the world of advertising, Scott must have been delighted by the build up to his next movie. For months before Alien’s release, the populations of the USA and UK were bombarded with the image of a strange object, which looked rather like a dinosaur egg, onto which was superimposed the tagline, “In space no one can hear you scream”. This, only his second feature film, turned out to be the world’s first glimpse of Ridley Scott, Hollywood director par excellence. His ‘iron fist in an iron glove’ managerial style paired with a strong cast and a story which seamlessly combined horror with visually arresting sci-fi sets was a massive hit. It also marked the debut of Scott’s most popular trademark – a strong, independent woman who was more than capable of extricating herself from the most deadly situation with no reliance on men. He claimed that the inspiration for his female characters came directly from his mother. Later he would say: “My mum brought three boys up: my dad was in the army and so he was frequently away. During the (Second World) war and post-war, we tended to travel following him around so my mum was the boss. She laid down the law and the law was God. We just
said ‘Yup, okay’ – we didn’t argue. I think that’s where the respect has come from, because she was tough.” Some benevolent god of the cinema must have been smiling on Scott, because his next film project involved taking the reins for the film adaptation of
“ALIEN IS A C FILM ELEVATED TO AN A FILM, HONESTLY, BY IT BEING WELL DONE AND A GREAT MONSTER. IF IT HADN’T HAD THAT GREAT MONSTER, EVEN WITH A WONDERFUL CAST, IT WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN AS GOOD, I DON’T THINK.” Philip K. Dick’s influential sci-fi novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? With science fiction nerds watching closely to make sure that justice was done to this classic, the pressure was on, but once the project was released under the title, Blade Runner it was clear that Scott had another box office smash on his hands. Despite being premiered in 1982, age has not withered Blade Runner and it is
still regularly named as one of the Top 10 films of all time as well as appearing on the favourites list of many celebrities and movie experts. From this point on, his artistic clout effectively proved, Scott was able to have as much control over his projects as he wanted. His love of strong female characters continued and, many argue, found its apotheosis in 1991’s Thelma & Louise, a road movie that told the story of two women who chose death and friendship rather than facing capture by the (male) police officers who were pursuing them. Even the most hardened feminist had grudgingly to admit that here was a male film director who understood them and Thelma & Louise, like Blade Runner, became one of the staples of Top 10 Movies of All Time lists. Not that every Ridley Scott movie has been an unqualified success: G.I. Jane and Hannibal, for instance, are still considered two of his weaker offerings, but he has built up such a huge wall of artistic goodwill that any minor lapse in judgement is quickly overlooked. In 2003 Ridley Scott became Sir Ridley Scott and claimed that he was “stunned and truly humbled.” After several decades spent
“I DON’T MAKE FILMS FOR OTHER PEOPLE; I MAKE FILMS FOR ME.” 31
The Films of Ridley Scott
making money for the big Hollywood studios it was clear that his roots in the north-east of England were still important, as he said: “As a boy growing up in South Shields, I could never have imagined that I would receive such a special recognition. I am truly humbled to receive this treasured award and believe it also further recognises the excellence of the British film industry.” Ironically, it says something for Scott’s reputation as one of cinema’s most respected talents that his knighthood is so often forgotten. The merest rumour that he is scouting for locations (the news that he was sighted in Málaga recently made the papers immediately) is sufficient in itself to create a storm of interest. It is said that his next directorial job will be on All the Money in the World, an account of the kidnapping, in 1973, of John Paul Getty III. As if this wasn’t enough for a man approaching 80, Scott still has a say in the operation of RSA and has been heavily involved in the production of TV series from Numb3rs to Amazon’s hit The Man in the High Castle, another Philip K. Dick classic. If governments want to persuade citizens that it is not only essential but desirable to carry on working into their old age, then they could do worse than point to the example of Ridley Scott.

War Cry
We are all looking forward to the third series of this quirky drama and it’s great news for fans of Ewan McGregor, since he will be playing two characters this season, namely Emmitt and Ray Stussy. Since this pair aren’t identical twins we can’t wait to see how this pans out! Set in 2010, the new outing features Carrie Coon as Gloria Burgle, the newly divorced local police chief. If it’s anything like as good as the previous two series, this may well be one of the standout TV events of the year.
Wilbur Smith In a triumphant return to his much-loved Courtney series, Wilbur Smith introduces us to a new member of the famed family, Saffron Courtney. Doctor Who – BBC
Rejoice, Whovians – the good doctor is back! Along with his new companion Bill, played by Pearl Mackie, the BBC website reveals that the new series – the last for showrunner Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi in the title role – will welcome some old favourites back to the fold. Michelle Gomez will reprise her role as the demented Missy while writer Mark Gatiss has promised that the Ice Warriors will return, albeit with a surprising new twist. If the child in you hasn’t been completely suffocated by the weight of adult stress and responsibilities you are guaranteed a thoroughly good time.
Have I Got News For You? - BBC
The current affairs quiz returns for its 53rd season, fuelled by the quick wits of team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton, who have been putting their unique spin on the news since 1990. HIGNFY has shown that it enjoys the kind of longevity that most of the politicians who feature on the programme (whether as guests or in film clips) would kill for. There will be a new guest presenter every week and, no doubt, the latest run will feature the usual mixture of comedians, journalists and politicians. With Brexit now initiated and The Donald in the White House, brace yourselves for some very barbed humour.

Party on Happy Birthday, Nat!
It was my birthday so I took a combined work/play trip back to London to see friends and family. I had a wonderful time catching up with everyone and enjoyed shopping, dinners, the theatre and afternoon teas. Scones and tea are just not the same in the Spanish sunshine! I was also filming for Channel 5 with Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langford for a show called How to Look a Million Pounds which will air in six weeks. It was so much fun as both Eamonn and Ruth are hilarious and I laughed so much. It’s really an insight of what it takes to look good that is, a lot!
Bardou is branching out
We are about to launch our own range of eyelashes and champagne. After testing every set of lashes on the market I decided to make my own. We will have Bardou by Day (a more natural look) and Bardou by Night (full-on glamour). We will also be stocking a premium range of mink lashes. Everyone knows I love a glass of champagne or two, so what better way to enjoy it than by bringing out my own Bardou bottle? We will give a complimentary bottle to each wedding party or large group that books in - if I manage not to drink it all myself, that is!

Wow, what can I say about Bardou’s first birthday party? It was awesome! We had such a good turn out with everyone dancing until the small hours. Thank you everyone who attended and everyone who helped out, including The Laundrette, Sushi Sensations, Marbella Candy Carts, Go Fotomatón and Lick FM for Aaron, our amazing DJ and the wonderful Conor McKenna, who was our live singer. I still can’t believe it’s been a year, but I am already looking forward to what the next years have to offer! Special thanks to my amazing team, without whom I couldn’t have done any of this.
International Women’s Day
I was honoured to be asked to give a speech in the Our Space section at the Oasis Business Centre in Marbella, talking about being a female entrepreneur and my experiences of starting a business in the city. I also attended a luncheon at Puento Romano Sea Grill with the girls. This always provides lots of fun and giggles and the food was amazing!

Forever young?
My good friend Rodrigo, the human Ken doll, was visiting Marbella so I managed to catch up with him over a glass of champagne in the salon while he was getting his hair highlighted. I’ve known Roddy for over a year now and, as busy as he is, it’s always a scream catching up with him and, best of all, I get to know all the newest procedures to employ in my quest to capture eternal youth! Talking about eternal youth, I tried out a fabulous treatment at Essentia Clinic Puerto Banús - dermal pen! This is a great procedure for anyone looking to treat wrinkles, sun damage, pigmentation issues and lots more. It’s pain free and I’m seeing the improvements every week I’m hooked!

Beautiful Barcelona
I always say that rooftop hopping in Málaga city is one of my favourite things to do and I really recommend it. Well, I did it again last week, only this time it was in beautiful Barcelona. I flew over to meet one of my best friends and confidants, Wayne Cronin. Wayne is a luxury market specialist and I’m a luxury market lover so it’s a friendship match made in heaven. We had the best time for his birthday: we ate, we danced, we drank cocktails all weekend and we even managed to fit in some private viewings of Guadí’s architecture to feed our minds. To all the fashionistas reading this, you must visit one of my favourite boutiques, Santa Eulalia on the Passeig de Garcia. The buyers there have an amazing eye and stock designers such as Canali, Lanvin, Roland Mouret, Saint Laurent and Etro to name but a few and they even stock a wonderful collection of the best coffee table art books. Enjoy a glass of Louis Roederer in their chic champagne bar because it’s important to rest after a heavy day of shopping. And, don’t forget, go to The Bankers Bar in The Mondrian to kick off your roof top hopping and fly away into your Cosmos.
I met the gorgeous swimwear supermodel, Bryanna Holly last month. Instagram sensation and reality TV celebrity, Bryanna was flown into Marbella to model for an exclusive cover shoot for Maxim magazine in Australia. I am delighted that they wanted her to wear Virginia Macari swimwear for the whole editorial. It is great news for my business because we are planning to stock my swimwear brand in Australia this Autumn. Jayden Fa, whom I adore, did an amazing job photographing her and what a super team he put together for the day. I am very proud at how it all turned out, so well done to all involved. I’m now looking forward to seeing it on the shelves. Here is a behind the scenes photo of Bryanna wearing a VM bikini. She is so hot!
I’m still on that hot bikini body quest and I think I’ve tried every sport from climbing mountains and weight lifting to pulling ropes. You name it and I’ve tried it. I went to one of my best friends’ studios here in Marbella. Tyrenne is the owner of Pole 4 Fitness. She has the enviable body of a sculpture, so I was curious to see what she does in her classes. Ty suspended me up in the air on a fitness hoop and I am addicted! Not only did I feel super sexy up there, I was also sore all over for about three days. My body is feeling harder and more toned after just a few classes. I will be an expert in a few weeks so, who knows, I might just hang a fitness hoop up in my home!
Perfect pictures
I’m a real lover of the wonderful world of art - nothing inspires me more. So when I received an invitation from The Timeless Gallery, I RSVP’d straight away. Mikael Segelstrom and his team have the most stunning pieces in their new Puerto Banús premises. They display an extensive selection of paintings, prints, sculpture, glass, ceramics and silversmith work by some incredible artists. I just love their aesthetic. “The gallery’s intent is to be a platform for wordless encounters between artists and spectators, an oasis for the soul, but also an educational place for knowledge and development,” says Mikael. And what a great party it was, complete with the most beautiful people of Marbella. I danced and drank Bellinis until dawn.
Here comes Summer
It’s been a busy month at Virginia Macari Swimwear Towers. We are organising all our pop-up shops for this Summer in the hottest beach clubs and our Summer collection has just hit Marbella. The even more exciting news is that we are collaborating with the revolutionary Bellamianta Tan. If you are a fake tan lover then you need to try it. I know I’m probably biased, but it is the best on the market as it’s organic and it leaves a beautiful, natural finish. The Bella team flew us all to Marrakesh to shoot their worldwide campaign and guess which swimwear brand they used? Virginia Macari Swimwear will be seen on the Bellamianta models in their magazine ad campaigns and billboards all over the globe. Here are some ‘sneak peak’ photos of the shoot. Enjoy!
Look out for an exciting competition on my Instagram page, Virginia Macari Swim where you can win bikinis for you and your friend worth 500€. Good luck!

IS IT A DEAL BREAKER
OR IS IT YOU? 40
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
W
e may occasionally sell ourselves short for different reasons but, when a relationship deal breaker transpires, some people can be more inclined to sell themselves short than others. Some sell themselves short in relationships because they have a low sense of selfworth. Others do it because they have been lulled into a false sense of security by someone who used to be a true friend or lover but is now clearly something else. Others do it because they have grown tired of fighting for their goal because, in reality, they have lost belief that they can achieve it.
YOU ARE IMPORTANT; SPEND YOUR TIME WITH PEOPLE WHO SEE YOUR GOOD QUALITIES AND APPRECIATE THEM ARE YOU BEING PICKY? People with low self-worth have a tendency to blame themselves for the relationship not working, even when the facts tell them otherwise. It’s as though they cling onto the idea that they can make this relationship work if they just change or fix themselves. They sometimes do this because they feel that they are to blame for all relationships that don’t work out rather than viewing things from a much more evenly balanced, ego-decentered perspective.
YOUR TIME IS PRECIOUS; SPEND IT NURTURING RELATIONSHIPS WITH PEOPLE WHO NURTURE YOU BACK They also sometimes do this because they feel unsure of their ability to find another catch and so hang onto the one they’ve got, even if it is no good for them. Sometimes you just have to look at the facts and decide what a deal breaker is. Ninety-five per cent of a relationship can be great but if the other five per cent is awful enough for it to be a deal breaker - however small a percentage of your overall relationship it may be - it’s still a deal breaker. There are certain things that you know in your heart are unacceptable to
YOU ARE HUMAN; ACCEPT THAT YOU HAVE GOOD HABITS AND BAD AND FOCUS ON A LIFETIME OF SELFREFINEMENT you in a relationship, whether romantic or non-romantic. It’s better to be sure of these things than try to pretend they are insignificant to you. Here’s the thing: however how much you pretend they aren’t important to you, these things will eventually catch up with you and remind you that they must be attended to. People who ignore their true needs eventually become sad or depressed, sometimes end up on antidepressants, and often hurt their self-esteem. So, time to pay attention to those deal breakers that aren’t going to bring you happiness, even if you pretend for a while that they are not deal breakers.
EIGHT QUESTIONS: IS IT THE DEAL BREAKER OR IS IT YOU? Be realistic; answer these sentences truthfully as if you were telling a friend or a coach: What are the suspected deal breakers present in our relationship? Why are they deal breakers to me? Is there anything about my being that invites these deal breakers into our relationship? Is there anything I can do to eliminate the deal breaker from our relationship? If I do what I can to eliminate the deal breaker from our relationship, will the issue disappear for good? What will happen to my mental health in the long term, if I try to live with this deal breaker? What will happen to our relationship in the long term, if I try to live with this deal breaker? Do we just want different things from this relationship, resulting in an impasse?

Ways
to Boost
TESTOSTERONE Over the next three months we will be looking at how looking after your testosterone levels can help your overall health, from avoiding stress to taking up meditation. If you want your training to count, then follow these few pointers and you’ll soon be reaching peak fitness levels.
L
ow testosterone has a negative impact on almost every system in the male body, from increasing insulin resistance, obesity levels, cardiovascular disease, reducing skeletal muscle mass, decreasing bone density, to increasing the risk of depression, diabetes and cognitive problems. From the age of 30 testosterone production starts to decline and often we don’t even notice it or think about it until some of these more serious issues have gained momentum. However there are a number of ways to help drive up testosterone levels, protecting your body against the effects of low testosterone, as well working to keep a leaner, more muscular physique as you grow older.
There are three main lifestyle factors that contribute to boosting testosterone levels: 1. Diet 2. Sleep 3. Stress management In this article we are going mainly to address the dietary changes you can implement to drive up testosterone because, inevitably, a good diet will have a knock on effect in improving sleep quality and reducing stress in the body.
42
EAT MORE CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES
1
Why? Cruciferous vegetables help
lower certain oestrogens which in turn can help reduce oestrogen’s inhibitory effect on testosterone production. Cruciferous vegetables, when digested, help the body release a phytochemical which helps the body metabolise and clear oestrogen thereby reducing its negative effect on testosterone levels.
Sources: Broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, watercress, bok choy and cauliflower are all great vegetables to include in your daily diet. INCREASE YOUR OMEGA 3 LEVELS
2
Why? Testosterone is what we refer to
as an anabolic hormone, meaning it is a hormone that promotes growth and repair within the body and predominates in a low stress environment. The hormone cortisol, which is released when the body experiences stress, is a catabolic hormone and counteracts the role of testosterone, promoting breakdown and inflammation. When the body is in a chronic state of stress a great deal of cortisol will be produced and it will start to sacrifice the production of other hormones to support the stress response. Testosterone production is one of the hormones that is inhibited at this time. Omega 3 can be very important in this situation; it reduces stress and inflammation in the body as it is a powerful anti-inflammatory. By lowering inflammation and stress, testosterone production can increase improving levels overall.
Sources: Sardines, walnuts, salmon and
mackerel are all great sources of omega 3. I would also recommend a supplement to support the diet to ensure high quality omega 3s are being ingested.
ZINC
3
Why? Zinc is an aromatase inhibitor
meaning, like cruciferous vegetables, it blocks oestrogen receptor sites, reducing the amount of testosterone that is converted into oestrogen leading to higher overall levels.
Sources: Shellfish, crab, lobster, oysters, beef, mussels, pumpkin seeds, spinach and cashew nuts are all great sources. VITAMIN D3
Why? Vitamin D is another important nutrient that works to regulate the
4
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
aromatase enzyme, which reduces the amount of testosterone that is converted into oestrogen. Therefore an increase in Vitamin D levels will have a positive effect on testosterone. Due to the geographical position of the UK it is often without sunshine and, teamed with an increasingly indoor sedentary lifestyle this means that, when the sun is out, citizens are often not enjoying its benefits. These issues have resulted in most of the population in the UK being Vitamin D deficient, meaning most people need a supplement, regardless of gender or age.
Sources: The sun is best but a Vitamin D3 supplement is a good secondary source. REDUCE ALCOHOL
5
Why? Alcohol can inhibit testosterone metabolism in the liver and, as it negatively impacts liver function, it reduces the liver’s ability to remove oestrogen from the body, resulting in increased levels.
Reducing your alcohol intake by a couple of glasses a week can have a positive effect and, if you can keep your intake to a minimum, it will be even more beneficial.
SELENIUM RICH FOODS
6
Why? Selenium is an essential trace
mineral that is rarely obtained sufficiently just from our diet. It is essential for male fertility and plays a vital role in testosterone production.
Sources: Eggs, chicken, butter, beans, fatty fish, flax seeds, olive oil. VITAMIN K2
8
Why? When taken alongside vitamin D3, vitamin K2 helps to stimulate testosterone production. The best way to increase Vitamin K2 is to take a high quality supplement.
AVOID EXTREME DIETS
9
Why? Low carbohydrate diets can be very effective at reducing body fat and, with the association of lower body fat percentage to increased testosterone levels, they can prove beneficial.
7
However the best way to utilise a low carb diet to improve testosterone levels is to follow it for a short period of time and not stay on it for too long. The reason for this is that a diet low in carbohydrates can reduce testosterone production over time. High quality natural carbohydrates help to lower cortisol (a testosterone inhibitor), support metabolism, support thyroid function and increase tryptophan (improving quality of sleep). All these factors link into the three main influences on testosterone levels that we detailed at the beginning. The role of carbohydrates in increasing testosterone levels should therefore not be ignored.
Cholesterol is an essential ingredient in hormone production and therefore plays an important role in the synthesis of testosterone. Foods that promote high levels of HDL (‘good’ cholesterol) are particularly associated with high testosterone levels.
Low fat diets are also detrimental to testosterone production. The body requires high quality fats to produce hormones, therefore a lack in these will affect testosterone levels. Fat and cholesterol are the raw ingredients for testosterone and are required to transport and absorb the fat soluble vitamins A,D,E and K, two of which (D and K) are essential for healthy testosterone levels.
Sources: Crab, liver, shellfish and brazil nuts. A high quality multivitamin will supply the body with the adequate amount. CHOLESTEROL
Why? Cholesterol is made by every cell in the body and is therefore incredibly important to overall health. Cholesterol has had a lot of bad press in the past but it is very important to understand that dietary cholesterol rarely negatively effects blood cholesterol levels, therefore avoiding foods that have a high cholesterol level can be detrimental to your health.

One OUT OF EVERY Ten WOMEN HAS
Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a chronic condition that affects young women. It has a high prevalence (one in every 10 women) but it does not have the same gravity in all cases. The most widely accepted theory about its development is the formation of endometrium (which is the layer of tissue lining the inside of the uterus and expelled at every menstrual cycle) where it doesn’t belong.
46
The most common symptom is menstrual pain which increases with age and sometimes lasts the whole period. This affects women’s quality of life and sometimes the cramps become disabling. The best method to obtain a correct diagnosis is by undergoing a pelvic ultrasound. The most common sign is the identification of “chocolate cysts” in the ovaries. But sometimes there
are smaller implants are in the pelvis which affect the Fallopian tubes, the peritoneum and other organs in the intra-abdominal area, such as the bladder, the bowels and the rectum. The most important consequence of this condition is the risk of infertility. This is why the gynaecologist’s job is to follow up on the affected woman her whole life, since her symptoms
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
and needs may change over time. Sometimes it’s a real juggling act to balance treating the symptoms and addressing the desire for childbearing. Up until now hormonal birth control pills have given a good response and level of tolerance. Nowadays new treatments such as selective estrogen and progesterone receptor modulators open new doors for treating women who want to preserve their fertility. Surgery should only be used in certain cases and at certain stages and must of course be
performed by expert surgeons. A successful intervention avoids relapses and is efficient in order to remove all trace of the condition. The treatment must be adapted to the individual and attempt to meet the following objectives: Managing the symptoms, regaining fertility, preventing recurrences and finally, treating endometriotic lesions. Medical treatment can help manage the symptoms, which is why it is the preferred course of action.
From the Gynaecology Unit at HC Marbella International Hospital we encourage women who believe they may be suffering from endometriosis to visit their gynaecologist. We also want to remind them of the importance of prevention and annual check-ups, since endometriosis does not manifest itself in the same way in all women.

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mind-blowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.
Step back in
TIME
This month Jonathan takes us through the hottest hair looks seen at fashion month, the awards season and, of course, the biggest night in film, which calls for hair looks of cinematic proportions. I am going to start off with the Oscars, which is always the highlight of the awards season and it didn’t disappoint. I was thoroughly entertained by Mr. Warren Beatty and even broke out the popcorn when the mistake was announced. To be honest I am actually glad that La La Land didn’t win Best Picture as it was a total let down. It promised to be so good but... well, it wasn’t. If I could have taken up knitting while watching it I would have. However, leading lady Emma Stone did shine on Oscar night with her effortless copper-red hair tossed over to the side in elegant Old Hollywood waves - a popular style of the night. This is everything red carpet beauty should be. We are seeing a big 40s revival at the moment, from red carpet to the catwalk (more on this later). I love everything about the 40s; well, Hitler and the blitz weren’t great but the hair WAS fabulous.
GET THE LOOK
To create these soft dreamy waves at home blow-dry smooth then spray Redken Quick Tease €14,25 onto your hair and brush through to give it some grip. Next wand every section going away from your face with the GHD Creative Curl Wand, €179. A soft bristle brush and your fingers are key for breaking up the curls, then set with hairspray. EMMA STONE
Taraji P. Henson made my head turn as she opted for the full bombshell effect. The asymmetrical bob added drama while the flash of toffee balayage on one side was genius. Michelle Williams showed off her peroxide, gamine, choppy cut which looked like an up to date version of Mia Farrow. I would have gone for a warmer blonde, as the ice blonde hue jarred against her dark eyes, but the cut was flawless. Charlize Theron was channelling Grace Kelly and I thought the fringe swept over to one side was stunning. The voluminous, 80s-inspired hair part was pulled back into a low ponytail while her make-up was minimal, letting her jaw-dropping diamond earrings do the talking. Scarlett Johansson’s pixie cut had an androgynous feel to it. If she hadn’t had lipstick on she could have be mistaken for a boy. The quiffed hairstyle and intentional roots gave it a cool, carefree finish. Now, I am sitting on the fence with Halle Berry. My first thought was that it looked like she had put her wig on backwards, but on closer inspection, a lot of work has gone into this look and I think she managed to pull it off. Plus it reminds me of the 70s disco afro so that’s always going to win me over.
WHO GOT IT WRONG
Nicole Kidman’s hair, Armani gown, and skin shade were all in the same colour family which made her basically look poorly. She looked cold and in need of a dose of Vitamin C. She needs to go back to copper blonde as soon as possible. Now Jessica Biel - what were you thinking? She looked like she was auditioning for Game of Thrones. I think she must have pulled the short straw when they were assigning the hairdressers. Her sleek hair was pulled back into a floppy (yet
LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE GUYS – OR NOT!

somehow also structural) bun. Why was it fuller on one side? It looked like she had her hair styled and then decided to go for a kip.
Now normally the men don’t even get a mention when it comes to the style stakes at the Oscars but this year a few did – and not in a good way. Jamie Dornan tried to add a little spice to his grooming routine with a shaved head and bushier beard, but ended up looking like his head was upside down. Justin Timberlake looked like a Battenberg cake and Jeff Bridges – well, he looked like Gerry. Need I say more?

STRAIGHT OFF THE RUNWAY
Bottega picked up where the Oscars left off, showing a modern take on the 1940s via a French Twist with a roll at the front. The look was given a punky edge by allowing a few pieces to stick out. To get the look prep hair with Redken All Soft Shampoo €13,50 and Conditioner €15,75 to cleanse and add softness and shine. Apply Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam, €14,25, concentrating at the roots of the hair and throughout the lengths. BOTTEGA VENETA Roughly blow dry hair using fingers. Brush through your length with a boar bristled brush. Pull hair at the crown over to one side of your face, creating a 40s wave in the front. Set with bobby pins. Using a boar bristled brush, pull hair back to the nape of the neck and pull up into a French twist. Set with pins. Pull out a few pieces using fingers, allowing them to hang loosely for a soft, romantic look. This image could have been taken straight out of the 1960s. Beehive up-dos, eyeshadow applied liberally along the crease, false eyelashes, and lots of lip liner were the basis of Moschino’s ‘60s-inspired offering. Key products to achieve this look are a good fine tail comb and plenty of hairspray, because you are going to be back-combing as though your life depends on it. Skyscrapers are great accessories featured in this super stylish urban fashion spread produced by Sisko Akt presenting their favourite trends for Spring/Summer 2017. Handcrafted and polished fabrics weave their way in from the catwalk trends, taking on a new urban sophistication. Together with the minimalistic wardrobe in tones of white, beige and black with hints of bright colours, this sister duo’s Finnish and Chilean roots shine through in a natural and true manner.

SEXY SIDE SLIT We’ve been seeing slits up the center and up the thighs for a while now, some with a more modest cut whilst others barely cover up. Legs are shown off beautifully no matter how the slit is placed and the final product is one that is thoroughly enticing, like this high-waisted long skirt that Dominique is pairing with an earthy swimwear garment to seal the deal. Combine with a chunky metal belt to elevate your look from soft neutral to city glam! Body and Skirt from María Jesús Jofré Atelier

Chic Happens BACK TO BASICS What is artificial is as real as the natural. In this season’s colour palette, greys reflect urban elements and earthy tones like brown or beige illustrate the natural sphere. So, take nature to the big cit, and empower your style with an original touch that takes your essence back to basics. This season it’s all about following your own instincts! Dress from María Jesús Jofré Atelier.

WAIST WRAPPING & DÉCOLLETAGE This cool trend for Spring/Summer 2017 is the result of draping fabrics, playing with volume and redefining the waistline. Pair it like Andrea with an off the shoulder shirt, also hot on trend, to show off a great décolletage that is gorgeous, no matter what! Top from Neutro and Black Transparent Skirt from María Jesús Jofré Atelier.

READY THE ROBES Considered to be the ‘IT’ dress of the season, it was designed in the 1970s for self-assured women who needed something practical, elegant and sensual at the same time. And that is exactly how wrap dresses make us feel! This robe-influenced trend is quite lovely and brings the comfort of the home to the outside world. This option that Andrea is sporting is an elegant twist that combines the comfort of a satin robe and the sensuality of a beautiful wrap dress. URBAN TRANSPARENCIES Remember when the transparent look came into play two years ago? It is still here and going strong it seems, but without the excessive show of skin; instead it subtly plays with showing off and hiding at the same time, in order to keep your look suitable for a night out in the city. Pair your sheer garment with your favourite bralette to make a bolder statement! Transparent Black Top from María Jesús Jofré Atelier.

MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE McLAREN 675LT SPIDER
73
TORQUE TALK
A
9.0kg carbon fibre panel makes a world of difference
I am not particularly fond of racetracks that have evolved out of old airfields. The fact that aircraft need flat runways to take off and land means that a racetrack made from a former runway is going to be flat, and therefore boring. Racetracks that host a modern Formula 1 race have to be flat to prevent these ultra high downforce cars from ‘catching air’ and turning an erstwhile race driver into a pilot. My favourite racetracks of all time - Ascari, Cadwell Park, Laguna Seca, Portimao and Road Atlanta - feature changes of elevation and are therefore not F1 venues. I was very impressed by the McLaren 675LT Coupe, which I drove at the flat and featureless Silverstone Circuit in July 2015. It’s 670hp 3.8-litre twin-turbo engine made it go like the wind, while its active aerodynamics helped it grip the tarmac like a limpet mine. It looked fantastic as well. However, at the end of my day with this great car, I found myself in awe but not in love. Fast Forward to May 2016, and I was in Tenerife, testing the McLaren 570GT, which brings superlative levels of refinement and noticeably low NVH to the genre, while retaining the ability to cover demanding
74
roads at a staggering pace not that far short of the mighty 650S. The Sports Series 570GT is on a completely different marketing trajectory from the lightweight no-holds-barred 675 LT, which sits atop McLaren’s Super Series range. But if I thought the 570GT was the best allround McLaren road car, the next morning would see my sensibilities recalibrated in a way best described as having an adrenaline injection direct to the heart. It all started when the nice McLaren PR man offered me the keys to a 675LT Spider sitting outside the hotel with its roof open under the warm, blue Spanish morning sky. It is the kind of invitation you would only refuse if you have either no interest in cars whatsoever, suffer from sensory anaesthesia, or have total immunity to adrenalin-fuelled excitement. Me? I just grinned, grabbed the keys, opened the door, and dropped myself into the figure hugging drivers’ seat in one fast and fluid move that might even have borderline impressed The Flash. Fact 1. McLaren’s racecar style carbonfibre MonoCell centre tub weighs just 75kg and was designed for peak structural and passive crash protection performance sans roof panel. Thus, even when driven al fresco, the ultimate McLaren Super series model benefits from the stiffest platform
TORQUE TALK
in its class on which to hang its actively damped suspension. Fact 2. The steel monocoque structures of rivals like the Ferrari 488GTS, Lamborghini Hurรกcan Spider, and Audi R8 V10 Spyder all suffer significant torsional stiffness degradation with their roofs down. Result. Where the opposition definitely have their handling edge blunted by going topless, no dynamic advantages are lost in translation when you sign up for a McLaren Spider. You have to write a bigger cheque, but the same is true for the others as well. There is a four-kilometre long road leading from the coast road by our hotel, up through the hills to join the new highway that runs parallel to the coast. It is a road I know well, and it is an absolute delight as some of the bends are open enough that it is safe to take a race line with due respect to other road users.
Early that Saturday morning the locals were still asleep and there was absolutely nothing on this road. In contrast to my drive of the Coupe on a wind swept Silverstone, I had a blue sky and an open roof above me, and a challenging uphill ascent ahead. I set the drivetrain and chassis to Race mode for maximum attack and set off. By the first two corners it was clear that the 675LT Spider was in its element and this encouraged me to pick up the pace. Where the wide tarmac and open landscape at Silverstone leaves you short of reference points for speed and distance, it also dilutes the sense of acceleration
and sheer speed. However, on this winding uphill road in Tenerife the exact opposite was true. For starters, the soundtrack in the roofless Spider could have been from a completely different car. Where the 1,320kg 675LT Coupe misses much of the cabin soundproofing of the 650S, and is just plain noisy in a mechanical way on full throttle, the 40kg heavier Spider with its roof tucked away adds the rush of wind to a delightful mix of induction, the heady scream of the flat-plane crank V8 and the tuned titanium exhaust. Add to this heady mix the backfire that accompanies each lightning fast upshift. and you 75
TORQUE TALK
76
TORQUE TALK
have an epic soundtrack being orchestrated right behind your head. It finally makes sense of the flatplane crank V8’s aural signature, turning it from the rather flat noise amplified by cabin resonance in the Coupe’s into a complex soundtrack of distinct beauty in the open Spider as the sound waves bounce off the landscape and head straight for your ears. I found that the much more visceral ear candy reaching my synapses also primed my driving brain for the high level of feedback I was getting from my finger tips and seat of the pants on this demanding road.
THE RAIN BECAME PROGRESSIVELY HEAVIER THROUGH THE RACE, TURNING IT INTO SOMETHING AKIN TO A BOAT RACE. THE IRONY OF THE MULTIPLE LAMBORGHINI V10 SOUNDTRACKS EMERGING FROM THE SPRAY RATHER THAN THE V12S FAVOURED BY OFFSHORE POWERBOAT RACERS WAS NOT LOST ON US!
With real world bumps and road imperfections to deal with, the McLaren’s chassis quickly showed its geometrical perfection. Not once, even under hard braking into a cambered bend, or accelerating on a less than perfect surface was it deflected from its intended course, the clever active systems keeping everything in check. At the same time, the perfectly weighted power steering showed that it is honed for exquisite feedback and is bereft of un-nerving bump steer or tramlining. I pushed harder and harder until I was braking right into the ABS threshold going into the slow turns, and trail-braking to rotate the tail into medium speed ones too.
77
TORQUE TALK
Exiting with a whiff of power oversteer seemed the natural thing to do, and the LT’s chassis and steering happily played this game just as its maker intended. On this twisty mountain road, the Spider’s active aero really came into its own, and had I the time to look behind I would have seen the big rear spoiler rising to its apogee in an instant under hard braking, conferring stabilising downforce over the rear axle. With each bend, each straight, each road inflection, the 675LT Spider only built on my fast growing respect for its dynamic prowess, connecting with my driving soul in a way that the 675LT Coupe had not managed to at Silverstone. The near lag-free throttle response of the bi-turbo V8 made it easy to balance the car in its
78
transition phase to the apex of every corner, after which the acceleration out was simply mind blowing. Even the claimed 8.2 seconds sprint to 0-200km/h does not begin to describe the way this car shortens the straight bits between one bend and the next. There is no question that the extra dimension of the open top and the direct injection of wind and engine and exhaust noise is what rounded out the LT Spider driving experience for me. I am also sure that swapping the bleak, open Silverstone for a familiar, challenging mountain road was another big part of the complex equation that led to total driver satisfaction. I have a short list of the great supercar drives that have really pushed my buttons over the years, and all of those cars have naturally aspirated engines. In alphabetical order: Ferrari 250GT

SWB, Ferrari Enzo, McLaren F1, Porsche 2.8 RSR, Porsche Carrera GT, Porsche 918 Spyder, and the SLS AMG Black Series. The McLaren 675LT Spider is the first turbocharged car to make it onto my ultimate supercar driving experience list, while the missing dimension that I finally

In the end, a carbon fibre roof panel weighing 9.0kg is actually all that separates a great car from a truly great one. I am finally in awe and in love!

The
THIRTYSECOND
of March
I
n 1392 Chaucer wrote: “Syn March was gon thritty dayes and two…”, which some readers believed meant the thirty second of March rather than, correctly, the 2nd of May. But the thirty second of March is, in fact, the 1st of April, upon which date, in “The Nun’s Priest’s Tale”, the vain cockerel Chauntecleer is tricked by a mischievous fox. In Spain, of course, such trickery takes place on December 28th, the “Dia de los Santos Inocentes”. There is a double meaning here. The “Santos
Inocentes” were indeed Holy Innocents, but if on that day one falls for a trick, the cry of ¡Inocente! goes up, which in this case means “gullible one!” This date once also took the place of April 1st in Belgium; a throwback to the days of the Spanish Netherlands, but nowadays Belgium celebrates on April 1st like much of the rest of the world. This includes the Spanish island of Menorca as a result of the British occupation during the 18th century. In France, of course, one is a “Poisson d’Avril”, or fish, rather than a fool. The origin of “April Fools’ Day” is uncertain. In an effort to find the truth in 1982 Professor Joseph Botkin of the University of Boston undertook some research. He devined that the custom originated during the reign of the Emperor Constantine (306 – 337 AD). A group of jesters approached the emperor and informed him that they could make a better job of running the empire than those currently in charge. Amused, the emperor gave them permission to do so for a day. A jester named Kugel passed a decree ordering that everybody should enjoy themselves with pranks on that day. This was so successful that the custom stuck. As Professor Botkin pointed out “In a way it was a very serious day. In those times “fools” were really wise men. It was the rôle of jesters to put things in perspective with humour”. The results of his research were published in a number of newspapers. It took about a fortnight for it to sink in that the good professor had made the
82
A GROUP OF JESTERS APPROACHED THE EMPEROR AND INFORMED HIM THAT THEY COULD MAKE A BETTER JOB OF RUNNING THE EMPIRE THAN THOSE CURRENTLY IN CHARGE. AMUSED, THE EMPEROR GAVE THEM PERMISSION TO DO SO FOR A DAY. whole thing up as an April Fool joke! The British explanation for its origin centres on the town of Gotham in Nottinghamshire. The story goes that the inhabitants of that town were told that King John (1199 – 1216 AD) could claim lordship over any road upon which he walked. Hearing that the king was on his way, the townsfolk closed their gates against him. When the king’s guards arrived to force their way in, the good people of the town began to behave like lunatics, to convince the king that it was not worth entering anyway. The king took the hint, and from that day to this the day of April 1st has been devoted to idiocy. It is, however, a fact that many civilisations and cultures have a tradition of zany celebrations at the end of March/beginning of April. The Romans celebrated “Hilaria” on March 25th, the Jews celebrate “Purim” (this year on the 12th March), whilst one has only to be in India to witness “Holi” (this year on the 13th March) to see how unrestrained such celebrations can be! Some April Fool jokes are rather
elaborate. In 1957 BBC’s “Panorama” announced that Swiss farmers were harvesting a record spaghetti crop as a result of the elimination of the spaghetti weevil. Swiss farmers were pictured gathering spaghetti. The BBC was inundated with enquiries as to how to grow spaghetti trees! In 1996 the Taco Bell company announced that it had purchased the Liberty Bell, and were renaming it the “Taco Liberty Bell”. This caused a national furore, and thousands wrote to the White House to protest.
IN 1996 THE TACO BELL COMPANY ANNOUNCED THAT IT HAD PURCHASED THE LIBERTY BELL, AND WERE RENAMING IT THE “TACO LIBERTY BELL”.
The White House Press Secretary, Mike McCurry, then issued a statement reporting that the Lincoln Memorial had also been sold, and that henceforth it would be known as the “Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial”! Two years later Burger King introduced its new “Left Handed Whopper”, designed especially for left-handed Americans, with all the ingredients rotated 180 degrees. By April 2nd the chain’s restaurants had been swamped by left handed Americans! Even rather staid institutions can join in the fun. In 1857 tickets were issued for entry to the Tower of London for the “Washing the Lions” event. It did not, of course, happen, and was merely a reprise of a similar prank pulled in 1698. Some pranks have made an indelible mark in history. In 1539 a Flemish nobleman was in the habit of sending his servants on foolish errands on April 1st. And so to this day we speak of a “fool’s errand”. In Scotland fools were indeed sent on such errands. The day was known as “Huntigowk Day”; a “gowk” being a cuckoo or foolish person. The tradition was to ask somebody to take a sealed message. When the recipient opened it, it read “Dinna laugh, dinna smile, hunt the gowk another mile”, and so the messenger would be sent
on to another recipient ad infinitum. A similar tradition existed in Ireland. More seriously April 1st came to be celebrated in the Netherlands as a result of the defeat of the Spanish general Duke Alvarez de Toledo at the Battle of Brielle in 1572. So the saying arose “Op 1 april verloor Alva zijn bril”, which is rather punny (sorry!) It means that on April 1st Alva lost his spectacles (bril), but he also lost Brielle! Equally seriously, when in 1683 the Poles entered into an alliance with the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold 1st (1658-1705 AD) on April 1st, the document was dated March 31st. These events, of course, do not explain the popularity of April 1st worldwide. And it can backfire. Google is known as being rather fond of April 1st jokes. It should have realised, therefore, that when in 2004 it announced the launch of Gmail with 1 gigabyte inboxes, when its competitors offered only 4 megabytes or less, it would not be taken seriously!

FIRST ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS AT BARDOU! Photos by Luciajimenez.net
We attended… The fabulously glamorous party celebrating Bardou’s first anniversary. As befits this salon’s style, the party was packed with Marbella’s most beautiful people. It was a success from beginning to end and there were some very luck raffle winners who got special Bardou vouchers.
We loved... The fantastic entertainment that kept the evening going. Lick FM was the DJ and the wonderful Conor McKenna pulled out all the stops when he segued through the top hits and we all sang along.
We thoroughly enjoyed The lavish cocktails and canapés. We had sushi form Sushi Sensations, mini burgers form The Launderette and mini pizzas from MPK- Marbella Pizza Kitchen. But we all went mad for the Marbella Candy Cart filled with popcorn, sweets and chocolate. The photobooth with fun props by Go Fotomaton was a huge success as well.
A big thanks to… Natalie Richardson for being such a wonderful hostess and Salli Brown whose party organisation skills made it a night to remember.

THE GRAND REOPENING OF TIMELESS GALLERY Photos by Julia Roder
We attended… The opening of Timeless Gallery Marbella’s new, enlarged exhibition space. Thanks to the remarkable growth of the gallery it already needs larger premises that are connected to the main office in Playas del Duque.
We were impressed by... The stunning propertions of the space and the meticulous care that had gone into curating the exhibits of the gallery’s prime artists who include Peter Mandl, Eppe de Haan, David Begbie, Phillip Jackson, Rieke van der Stoep, Taras Lobada. We think it is fair to say that there isn’t anything else like it in Marbella.
We enjoyed... The entertainment that included: ballet dancers with Venetian masks accompanied by a pianist, the lovely voice of Zoe Louise and a cello and violin duo. The stunning cocktails and canapés were served by charming girls, also wearing Venetian masks. It was a truly stylish and memorable occasion.
Congratulations and thank you... To Mikael Segelström and his family, especially his mother who helped him cut the ribbon, and to the entire Timeless team who made sure the evening was a success.

PADDY POWER! LA SALA SUPER LEAGUE We attended… The golfing charity event at La Cañada Golf in Sotogrande. It was the perfect sunny day and the golfers enjoyed a challenging round with fast greens and lots of trees, not to mention the diversion of three half way refreshment bars that gave everyone the full Paddy’s Day feel.
We applauded... The individual winner Brett Little and the team winners, The Barber Shop. Also big congratulations to Jason Tucker for an incredible hole in one. The standard scratch of the day was a very low 25.6 and the wooden spoon winner achieved a vey impressive 2 points.
We were delighted... That this charity event raised 5,680€ for Moebius Syndrome, which is a very rare congenital disorder and the organisers would like to thank everyone who contributed this, including Laurence from The Michael Campbell Academy for providing a challenging Beat the Pro for the charity.

T
he profile of industrial interior design has risen significantly over the last 10 to 15 years. It was a style representative of a marked and purposeful shift from the polished and perfect to the edgy and unrefined. Bars started changing their once slick interiors to feature exposed brick, lighting made from copper piping and
finished off with Edison bulbs. Concrete made a comeback and we saw not only walls and stairs created from it, but coffee tables and seating as well. Now you can buy wallpaper that replicates the finish and these are highly sought after. Where interiors might have once been all about

Sturdy Legs the decadent, there is a new style of decadent in this new stripped back, basic, raw style. It is entirely normal for styles to keep changing; humans seem to relish if not actually need a regular change in our
surroundings and often the change is borne from trying to create almost the opposite of what might be in fashion. In the 1950s interiors were considered to be kitsch and cutesy, not long after that designers in the 1960s created styles considered to be quite outlandish at the time by creating very simple furniture. Styles often repeat themselves but has ‘industrial’ been done before? Well, cavemen had a pretty good handle on the style but I suspect that was a practical, not an aesthetic decision.

THEY WERE ALSO USED AS OFFICE SPACE AND MANY OF THE ORIGINAL FEATURES WERE KEPT AND CELEBRATED, SUCH AS THE STUNNING FACTORY WINDOWS, WHICH ARE NOW INCREDIBLY FASHIONABLE.
It might have started when people living in cities realised that the cost of living was becoming increasingly difficult to cover and housing options were limited. As many manufacturing businesses moved their operations to Asia to keep costs down there were a large amount of empty factory style buildings which were eventually converted into fashionable dwellings. They were also used as office space and many of the original features were kept and celebrated, such as the stunning factory windows, which are now incredibly fashionable. The style was quickly noticed and lighting, furniture and decoration companies started creating products to meet the demand. Tables upcycled from
old Singer sewing machine bases, railway sleepers and old wood used for almost anything, lights with exposed bulbs rather than lampshades and other items of furniture created using items that once had a very different life defined the style. But it wasn’t just upcycling - items for our interiors started being produced from scratch in an industrial style and now there is so much to choose from that you can create the look with ease and with any budget. The style now is migrating into a very refined version of industrial; if copper is used it is polished rather than tarnished, the finish of the products is incredibly precise rather than rough and the design has been tidied up and is really rather stunning.

But what does the industrial style actually represent? Obviously in the modern day it is just one of many styles that can be adopted depending on the taste of the person or people who will be using the space. But in terms of history it means so much more. The Industrial Revolution is hugely significant to every human on this planet and changed the world forever. It was that moment in history. between 1760 and roughly 1820, when production and manufacturing stepped up a notch, increasing the standard of living significantly. It was the move from hand production methods to machines, chemical

The textile industry was dominant in the industrial revolution, creating a massive rise in employment and making huge amounts of money due to the speed with which the textiles could now be produced. The conditions were still incredibly dangerous, many workers died and Isambard almost lost his own life. In 1865 the East London Railway Company bought the Thames Tunnel for €200,000. The tunnel became part of the London Underground system and is still in use today as part of the London Overground. The original Brunel Engine House is open to visitors now as the Brunel Museum, including the original entrance shaft which now features a concert venue and a rooftop garden and bar which have been built on top of the shaft. ow that the season of joy and happiness has come and nature wakes up joyfully, announcing the arriving of spring, it’s time to get up and pour some nice Chablis in our glasses to celebrate the arrival of a warmer season. The more pronounced acidity and palate weight of white Chablis could be perfectly tuned with the flavours of spring. The Chablis wine region is located in the most northern part of Burgundy, not far from the beautiful city of Auxerre. Soil has a huge impact on the quality of Chablis wines. The best sites are limestone and kimmeridgean clay, which is rich in marine fossils. This soil underpins the palpable minerality for which Chablis is revered. Chablis has a truly unique steely minerality and strident sense of place. Here Chardonnay speaks for itself, with little to no oak ageing, displaying dry mineral, apple and pear flavours and hints of flint in the aroma. Chablis, one of the most famous wine styles in the world, has recently made a welcome comeback and the overall quality of Chablis has probably never been higher. t the heart of OAK Garden & Grill restaurant sits a mighty Quercus Ilex, which is an evergreen oak tree that is native to the Mediterranean region and it is the national tree of Spain. The tree has been praised for its humility and strength in the poem “Fields of Castile” by Spanish poet, Antonio Machado, and as a centrepiece for this restaurant, it provides a sense of proximity to nature and of being grounded in the earth, even though the venue is on one of the busiest corners of Nueva Andalucia. that comes from this once having been a home combined with the feeling that one has entered a secret garden, adds to the impression that one has escaped this world and entered another that is more relaxed and where the atmosphere is jolly and convivial. Just what is needed to stimulate the appetite and get the digestive juices flowing! The Society team was excited at the prospect of sampling OAK’s new menu devised by La Sala’s Executive Chef David Canas, a culinary artist who has been attracting diners to the restaurant with his delicious grill specialties as well as a selection of La Sala’s famous signature dishes. Without wishing to repel vegetarians or vegans, or put them off visiting this delightful place, let’s be clear that this al fresco spot specialises in meat. Indeed, it offers a staggering 10 varieties of premium beef from around
the world, including Wagyu Beef and American Black Angus as well as a carefully selected national and local meats. All the cuts are cooked with care, respect and expertise in an aroma of oak, olive and sarmiento wood. But, it does have a selection of fine vegetarian dishes as well as fish and seafood

platters, and there are plenty of starters to suit non-meat eaters. There is nothing quite like the scent of wood-smoke and cooking meat to tantalise the senses of smell and taste, and we had arrived prepared to enjoy everything at OAK to the utmost. Having admired the sensitive interior decoration and the illuminated tree at the centre, we finally settled down to peruse the menu and try to make a selection without too much mind-changing moments, which is often the case with us. We opted to go for a selection of starters that we could share. Brie fried in crispy Panko served with mixed Berry Compote and Green Salad with citric dressing was a popular choice. We also couldn’t resist trying a Whisky, Tequila or Classic Langoustine Pil-Pil (we opted for Tequila) and the Langoustines and Sea Bass Peruvian Ceviche with Mango, Avocado and Tiger’s Milk. In case you don’t know, Tiger’s Milk is the Peruvian term for the citrus-based marinade that cures the seafood in a ceviche. There isn’t any ‘milk’ in it at all, which is good news for the lactose-intolerant. And,
as we knew we wanted to sample the fines cuts of meat for our main courses, we added one more fish dish to our order; the King Crab Spring Roll served with Green Salad and a Duo of Dipping Sauces. The Brie was a perfect consistency without any trace of the rubbery effect one sometimes encounters with this popular starter and the berry compote was a nicely acidic complement to it. The Tequila Langoustine Pil-Pil was a huge hit and some of us may never look at the everyday prawns pil-pil again without remembering that it has a superstar relative. Ceviche is often difficult to get right and we have been disappointed on several occasions at other restaurants by the quality of the ceviche, but OAK’s got a massive thumbs-up from all of us. Similarly, the King Crab spring rolls were light and exceedingly fresh. Thankfully, these starters hadn’t filled us up and we pondered the main dish menu. Would it be a speciality steak from the Oak Grill, a Rib-Eye steak or one of OAK’s signature dishes? We made the more or less democratic decision to order one from each. We settled on the Wagyu Sirloin Steak, the 52-month old Premium Galician rib-eye and the Chargrilled Fillet Mignon and Half Lobster. To accompany these we chose a selection of Grilled Mediterranean Vegetables and Hand Cut Chips. Well, you can’t have steaks without chips, can you?
The Wagyu beef was cooked in the special grill and our charming waiter explained how the OAK Grill works to make the meat so fabulously succulent and tasty. The base of the grill is lined with charcoal to ensure that the heat is maintained and the meat will have a caramelized exterior but pink or red centre. The grill is then covered with aged oak and when the oak slow burns it releases sugar crystals that produce a fruity scent combined with a smoky fragrance. It certainly produced a Wagyu steak to die for. The rib-eye steak is cooked at the table on a personal BBQ grill and we all loved the theatre of it. It really is a treat and it’s perfect for sharing if you don’t feel that you can quite manage 1.2kg of prime beef. OAK’s signature ‘surf and turf’ dish was another explosion of wonderfulness in the mouth and the vegetables were roasted to perfection and beautifully presented, as was everything else at OAK. OAK is the perfect warm weather dining venue when you want top quality, refined dishes and service. What’s more, they are adding a ‘tiki’ cocktail bar this summer, which will be a ‘little sister’ bar of the soon to be opened Mahiki Beach in Marbella, very exciting new venue coming from La Sala Group that we’ll reveal more about later. And, there are plans to install glass curtains so that OAK can become a place to dine yearround. We all agreed that this was one of the best dining experiences we’d had thanks to the staff, the excellence of the kitchen and of course, the charming ambience with the OAK at its heart. Over-hyped graffiti vandal? Astute political commentator? Artistic agent provocateur? Whatever your opinion of Bansky, chances are that you know the name which, in this age of celebrity culture and random distraction is a rare achievement for any kind of artist. While his urban artworks command six-figure sums and create a buzz every time a new addition is sighted, more recently he has widened his scope. Having surprised the UK with his ‘bemusement park’, he has now set his sights on the Middle East and its attendant political challenges.

ainting one’s signature onto surfaces in urban areas in the hope of gaining some fleeting form of immortality is a common enough practice, but few have managed to take it as far as this. Bristol’s Banksy (identity still officially unknown, although rumours constantly circulate) is currently king of the British art world, his artworks attracting as much money as publicity. To wake up and find that your block of flats has, overnight, been the target of Banksy’s latest prank is a shortcut to instant fame.
Since we don’t yet know who he is exactly, art critics have failed to reach a satisfactory conclusion about the level of Banksy’s artistic training, some seeing him as a breath of fresh air, others considering him to be an ignoramus’s idea of an artist, the amount of publicity he is able to attract in no way backed up by any discernible talent. Commenting on his Better Out Than In exhibition, The Guardian’s Jonathan Jones described it as a collection of “banal daubings, just because it’s urban and outside doesn’t make it any good” while in The Independent, Jack Orlick complained that recognition has turned Banksy into “a commodity to be sold to hipsters and hoorahs”. In 2010 Bansky turned his attention to film. The resultant documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop, recounting the story of Thierry Guetta, a French immigrant living in Los Angeles and his obsession with street art, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Yet even this proved to be not without controversy, as speculation grew that Thierry Guetta was a fictional construct and the film was less documentary and more ‘mockumentary’, despite the director’s insistence that Guetta was entirely real. Guetta ultimately came forward to make his own statement: “This movie is 100 per cent real. Banksy captured me becoming an artist. In the end, I became his biggest work of art.”
Until now, Banksy’s most ambitious project has been Dismaland Bemusement Park. Opening on August the 21st 2015 in Weston-super-Mare, a once popular holiday resort that has seen better days, Dismaland was a miserabilist pastiche of Disneyland, a “family theme park unsuitable for small children” in the words of its creator. With help from several prominent people including Damien Hirst and Julie Burchill (both also famous Bristolians), he built his pop-up attraction which featured TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE

“Walls are hot right now, but I was into them long before [Donald] Trump made it cool,” says Banksy. Despite its limited size, the hotel includes a lavish Presidential Suite, even if the bathroom contains a bath which is filled by water splashing from a bulletriddled water tank. By way of contrast, the budget room features a couple of bunk beds that were salvaged from an abandoned army barracks.
the Grim Reaper riding the dodgems and a pocket money loans shop, which claimed to be willing to lend small amounts of money to children at an interest rate of 5,000 per cent. Banksy was also keen to offer other young artists to participate in the venture, which was a massive success, with some queuing for hours to view this very British version of a theme park. When Dismaland closed its doors for the last time on the 27th of September, barely a month after it opened, it had not only boosted Westonsuper-Mare’s economy by £20 million and attracted celebrities such as Jack Black, Brad Pitt, Neil Patrick Harris, Ant and Dec, Russell Brand and Mark Ronson to stump up the three pounds required to secure a ticket. Obviously, following a success as massive as this, Banksy realised that he would have to follow Dismaland up with something even bigger and bolder. His new Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem has attracted the attention of the international press and continued to ask questions about the situation in the West Bank. Boasting that has “the worst view in the world”, the Walled Off contains 10 rooms which feature some eye-catching artworks. The Guardian’s Emma GrahamHarrison describes it as “a hotel, museum, protest and gallery all in one, packed with the artworks and angry brilliance of its owner, British street artist, Bansky.” Towards the front of the establishment is the vast wall that separates the Israeli and Palestinian territories, hence the bold claim about the dire view.
152
Like Dismaland, the Walled Off Hotel is intended to provoke and bemuse in equal measure, something that it effortlessly achieves. A former pottery factory, officials also hope that the Walled Off will boost Bethlehem’s local economy in the way that Dismaland improved Weston-super-Mare’s. Bethlehem has long been a major draw for religious and cultural tourists, but the volatile political atmosphere in the West Bank has meant that many potential visitors have been keeping their powder dry until the situation is calmer. Not

AND ANGRY BRILLIANCE OF ITS OWNER, BRITISH STREET ARTIST, BANSKY.”
Another of the Walled Off’s many attractions sounds faintly sinister: “And through it all the piano plays - by itself. Our remote controlled mechanical baby grand has been programmed with a bespoke score of contemporary arrangements, plus every night it will play back a concert recorded exclusively for the hotel.” Music fans will apparently be treated to music by Banksy’s old mentor, 3D of Massive Attack, plus offerings from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Flea and Hans Zimmer. WALLS ARE HOT RIGHT NOW, BUT I WAS INTO THEM LONG BEFORE TRUMP MADE IT COOL
that the threat of terrorism has deterred Banksy, who has been a fan of the city and, on his first visit more than a decade ago, even contributed some of his characteristic urban art to the wall, which has also proved a powerful draw. The Walled Off also includes a Piano Bar, which the official website describes thus: “Britain got its hands on Palestine in 1917 and the piano bar is themed as a colonial outpost from those heady
days. It is equipped with languid ceiling fans, leather bound couches and an air of undeserved authority. Guests can peruse a collection of Banksy artworks that include vandalised oil paintings and statues choking on tear gas fumes. Warm scones and freshly brewed tea are served daily on fine bone china and the Walled Off Salad should not be missed.” Intriguingly, there is also a gallery, which displays the work of talented Palestinian
artists and a museum: “This home-made attraction is dedicated solely to the biography of the wall. It contains stateof-the-art audio visual presentations and a very old tree. Other highlights include an animated history of the region, military pornography and original beach sculpture from Gaza. The cinema plays excerpts from the mighty Oscar nominated ‘Five Broken Cameras’ - and one of those very same bullet-damaged cameras is on display.”
The Walled Off’s manager, Wisam Salsaa, hopes that the project will help to overcome political barriers. “I would like to invite everyone to come here, invite Israeli civilians to come visit us here. We want them to learn more about us, because when they know us it will break down the stereotypes and things will change.” However, this is currently easier said than done, since Israelis are banned from visiting Bethlehem’s more famous sites, although Banksy has chosen to locate the Walled Off in an area that is under Israeli control, meaning that it is perfectly legal for Israelis to stay. Unfortunately they will have to navigate their way through Palestinian controlled land to get there.
Banksy, though, is confident that he possesses the necessary nerve to make the Walled Off Hotel a success, however brief its existence may be: “My accountant was worried some people will be too scared to travel to the West Bank, but then I remind him - for my last show they spent a whole day in Westonsuper-Mare.” banksy.co.uk
