ANA DE
orn Ana Celia de Armas Caso, in Cuba on April 30th, 1988, Ana was raised in the small city of Santa Cruz del Norte and attended the National Theatre School of Cuba. She decided in her early teens she wanted to be an actress and by the age of 18, she had moved to Madrid, Spain. Here she landed a role in the popular teen drama, El Internado, which she starred in for six seasons. The show, set in a boarding school, was hugely popular with viewers and made Ana a celebrity in Spain. Despite its success, Ana felt typecast and asked to be written out of the show in its second to last season. Ana began a relationship with Spanish actor Marc Clotet in 2010, they married in Costa Brava in July 2011 but sadly the duo ended their relationship in 2013, with the actress moving to Los Angeles shortly thereafter. On arrival, Ana spoke very little English

and in early auditions shared she ‘often didn’t know what they were saying.’ She had to begin her career again from scratch, having left behind local success in Spain. So as not to be restricted to only playing Latina characters, Ana spent four months in full-time education to learn English. Her first Hollywood release was the thriller Knock Knock alongside Keanu Reeves and the comedy-war crime film, War Dogs as well as a supporting role in the sporty biopic Hands of Stone. Despite its delayed release, this was the first Hollywood movie Ana filmed, the director had seen her in El Internado and invited her to LA to audition for the Spanish-language part. In 2019 she starred in the murder mystery film, Knives Out, which was a major box office success. She was nominated for the Golden Globe
“After having a career in Spain for eight years, I went back to being anonymous again, having to prove myself to the industry and myself, to prove I was capable of acting in a different language. It was a good challenge, and I can’t complain.”

Award for Best Actress and won the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. The following year she was featured in an impressive four films including The Informer, The Night Clerk, Sergio the Netflix biopic and spy thriller, Wasp Network which was shot in Cuba, and Armas’ first work in her home country since leaving in her younger years. In 2021 Ana reunited with her KnivesOut co-star Daniel Craig to play a Bond Girl in No Time to Die. The character of a Cuban CIA agent was written with Armas in mind. Deep Water followed, based upon the novel by Patricia Highsmith, where she starred alongside Ben Affleck as a couple in an adulterous marriage. Affleck and de Armas play Vic and Melinda Van Allen, a couple stuck in a loveless marriage whose extramarital dalliances and sadistic mind games
lead to dead bodies. After meeting on the set in late 2019, Armas and Affleck dated from early 2020 to January 2021. Showing no signs of slowing down, Ana is set to portray the iconic, Marilyn Monroe in the Netflix biopic, Blonde, based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates. To prepare for this she worked with a dialect coach for a year. She will also star in the Russo brother’s Netflix thriller, The Gray Man alongside Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans as well as the Apple TV+ film Ghosted, also starring Chris Evans where she replaced A-lister, Scarlett Johansson. With Bond Girl status, the role of Marilyn Monroe and a Golden Globe under her belt, what’s next for the Cuban actress taking over Hollywood…

Despite the nonconformist freedoms afforded by his tender years and the anything-goes spirit of our hometown Brighton, he doesn’t generally stagger about dressed as a giant lizard, but it was World Book Day... yesterday. His school are also non-conformist so when every other schoolkid in town was Harry Potter or Wonder woman on World Book Day, he had jeans and a jumper (with ever-present felt tip and toothpaste stains), then today when everyone else is back to civvies or uniform, I find myself at 8.30am walking with dinosaur. After a surreal exchange at the gate where I ultimately secured a pinky promise he wouldn’t press the costume’s “realistic roaring effect” button during Friday assembly, I walked back home, grabbed the dog and hit the park to come up with an idea for this very article. Lost in thought as I walked, something suddenly struck me... it was a branch. I’d walked into a branch. Unperturbed, I spent the next few minutes contemplating
whether there was an article in there somewhere. If life gives you lemons, you make lemonade, so if a tree twats you with a branch....turn other branches into paper covered in stupid ramblings about branches??... Remembering I’d already had a fairly large pop at treekind in my recent driverless car piece, I decided if I wanted to keep the fickle attention of my audience, I’d need to...here it comes.... branch out (Fuck you, I went there). I racked my brains for other ideas, but hitting a brick wall (figurative wall.... real branch), I walked home. Arriving at my door, something else struck me, this time in the form of an idea. If I was to legitimise the overinclusion of walking in this article and convince my readership I wasn’t just a poor writer (I’m so much more than just a poor writer), it would have to become about walking. Regular reader (Hi mum!) will know I like to populate my work with (hopefully) interesting facts and insight, generally only leaning into farce and profanity to get the word count (and mum’s blood) up. I think I’ve covered farce and profanity already (remember the branch times...) so the remainder of the article will be straight up interesting fact and insight.... about walking. As most of us know from school, doing walking, or just “walking” as the we now refer to it, was invented in 1849 by Sir Francis Walking. Before
Before the renowned industrialist revolutionised human locomotion, most people had tried sitting and certain elites even took a stab at standing, but nobody had actually attempted that first step. 36
the renowned industrialist revolutionised human locomotion, most people had tried sitting and certain elites even took a stab at standing, but nobody had actually attempted that first step. In his landmark memoir of 1880, Remember When I Invented Walking?, Sir Francis elaborates: “It occurred to oneself that standing, though a fine and noble pursuit, simply lacked that indefatigable trait which permitted one to...how to best describe it?...go along a bit. Looking back now, when every pauper and their hound is walking, it’s hard to comprehend just how revolutionary one’s actions were, though I concede if I have seen further than most, it’s only because I stood on the shoulders of giants.... That was just standing though. I invented walking, me.” Within mere months of Sir Francis’ first bipedal foray, and despite fierce and totally predictable opposition from the Catholic Church, walking was the hot new trend, especially amongst the dandies of the time who liked the way their legs wiggled around when they did it. The poor and working class also embraced it, particularly as an evasive manoeuvrer to avoid being trampled by the nobility’s horses, themselves practising a hoofed version of the endeavour at greatly increased speeds. Today it’s hard to move for people walking about / into branches and despite efforts by many to disrupt the status quo with hipster alternatives such as “strolling”, “running”, “hiking” and of course “galumphing”, it’s walking which has proved a real mainstay for people just wanting to get from A to B without a fuss. Of course, like any widely-embraced truism, walking has received its subsequent share of backlash, mostly in the form of conspiracy theories which credit its origin not with the noble elite of our great nation but in the dirty stinking apes of absolutely ages ago. According
to these wild rantings, early humans combined apelike and humanlike ways of moving somewhere between three and at least six million years ago, evolving upright motion to better navigate diverse landscapes such as forests and grasslands. The tin foil hat brigade will point to numerous paintings and photographs which appear to portray all manner of pre-Victorian folk in unabashed states of “mid-walk”, the obvious rebuttal being that these examples merely represent static depictions of wonky standing. To suggest we’ve actually been walking for millions of years undermines not only Sir Francis’ claims but also the amount we’ve learned about the practise since its true inception less than two centuries past.
speed is 3.1 miles per hour, meaning each theoretical circumnavigation would take just 334.7 days, though that’s not accounting for a single minute of resting, eating, weeing, sleeping or drowning. On the plus side, walking that distance would burn off enough calories for you to consume around 442,000 plain M&M’s without going all chubby and if you walked sideways, which is more challenging for our noncrab bodies, you could afford to eat even more. The journey would require some 50 pairs of trainers, the average pair estimated to last around 500 miles. You could expect to walk into “many” branches along the way, but don’t let that put you off. If you’re capable of walking but haven’t yet tried it, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! Get out there and do walking!
The following facts are facts (well, I found them online...) Walking increases blood flow to the brain and is a proven booster of mental, as well as physical health. Unless you walk off a cliff. The average person walks about 75,000 miles in their life, which equates to three trips around the world. The average walking

Alcohol took me to rock bottom, Now I have it all…
Claire, who was addicted to alcohol and cocaine, is 39 years old. At her lowest, she thought she had lost everything, now she is the daughter, sister, niece, auntie, and partner that she always wanted to be. Here she tells us her amazing story of transformation and hope People ask me ‘what was your rock bottom?’ I had lots of what I call mini rock bottoms, which got worse every time I had one. My lowest moment came when I realised that I had lost everything good in my life. It wasn’t just the loss of my family, friends, jobs, house, I also lost my dignity and self-worth. My mind was completely broken. Physically, I weighed just six stone and couldn’t even walk down the street. I found myself alone in a hotel room with two bottles of vodka and some tablets, I have never felt so lonely. By this point the obsession and compulsion to drink had completely taken over and I couldn’t
stop. I didn’t know who I was anymore. I didn’t know what else to do but to end my life, as the alcoholic in me completely had taken control. I first heard about Alcoholics Anonymous when it was introduced to me by a therapist I was going to see. Then I contacted one of their members through the Costa del Sol English speaking AA helpline. The first thing that struck me when I got to AA was the people; everyone was so happy and friendly. Then I realised that one of my biggest needs was to feel safe; and members gave me that feeling, going to meetings I felt safe and very loved. I think we need that when we come in. We feel completely vulnerable, souls who need love and guidance. We need people who understand our illness, how we are feeling and what we are
experiencing. People who can tell us that it will be ok and mean it! My life started to improve quickly. At around two months sober and alcohol free my head started to clear, and I could think better. By six months in, I was mentally and physically so much better! Two years later and my life is so different. I have a successful business, I’m getting married, and I have a house that’s paid for. I think the biggest thing for me was reconnecting with my family. Through my addiction I ruined a lot of relationships with family and loved ones. These relationships have now been mended and we are closer than ever, I am now the daughter, sister, niece, auntie, and partner that I always wanted to be. I am more confident and feel peace and contentment in my life.
Every day is a blessing for me.. I no longer have a fear of life.
THERE ARE MEETINGS OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, WITH FRIENDLY PEOPLE WHO WILL UNDERSTAND, HELD DAILY THROUGHOUT THE COSTA DEL SOL. MEETINGS ARE FREE TO ATTEND, AND ANYONE WHO THINKS THEY MAY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ALCOHOL IS WELCOME.

E H T E N H I T JJO N OI E C N E A C T N S RREESSIISTA Know what happens when you keep things the same? You get stuck in a rut and life becomes boring, or worse, depressing. While we may be hard wired to crave the familiar, it’s change that fuels our growth, our challenge is to embrace it whilst accepting that our inner critic will always try to hold us back.
T
here are plenty of ways this resistance can show up, but why oh why does it? After all, we’re striving to achieve our dreams! Why would we stop ourselves? The answer lies in our sub-conscious and its hard wired survival mechanism. Our sub-conscious ALWAYS wants to keep us safe, and the familiar is safe. Anything new is a potential threat to our survival, so it will throw up all kinds of obstacles to keep us where we are, to ensure our survival. Sometimes it stops us even taking action in the first place. Have you ever researched something so endlessly that weeks, or months have gone by and you still haven’t made a start ? Or perhaps you’re set on what you’re about to do until you’re just about to start and you pause, to gather some more information and talk yourself out of it. If you actually got going then it could be that feeling…you know the one, you’ve committed to a goal, you’re flying towards it, then you just stop. Alternatively, it can show up as self-sabotage, suddenly you find you’re creating dramas that take you off your intended course. Look at it like this, you’re on one side of a ravine, your goal is on the other. Across the ravine is a shaky rope bridge. As you step forward your sub-subconscious checks all of your memories, beliefs, experience to decide whether it is safe for you to cross. Guess what? It’s not! Only it is. When resistance shows up it’s actually a sign that you’re on the right path. What you need to do now is not listen to it, but keep pushing forward AND keep affirming to yourself your goal and where you are going.
44
We can use something called congruence theory to help us. Very basically this states that our behaviour and our beliefs must be aligned, otherwise we move into a state of cognitive dissonance that is so uncomfortable (hello resistance!) that we must alter either our belief or our behaviour to come back into a congruent state. How does this help? Well by crossing the rope bridge to your goal you’re behaving in a new way not aligned with your old beliefs. Your subconscious wants to pull you back. Keep going forward and keep affirming the new beliefs you want, and once you’re a long way across the rope bridge your sub-conscious has to come on side and alter your beliefs to align with your new behaviour. You can see from this example, that if we want to grow and get the most from our existence we need to challenge our sub-conscious and push our envelope of comfort whether they be physical, mental or emotional.
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
What we need to do is extend our boundaries, so that the zone we feel comfortable in gets larger, in effect increasing our area of performance. We can only achieve this by pushing ourselves and changing things up. When we want to alter an aspect of our behaviour it can be helpful to identify the belief that is underpinning that behaviour, and focus on shifting the belief. Note, beliefs are hard to delete, so altering them for the result we want is a better option. First identify the limiting belief you have that could hold you back. Then model the opposing helpful belief that will help you get to your goal. For example you may not believe you are capable of making good food choices long term and keeping weight off. Instead choose the belief that you enjoy making good choices and like the way it makes you feel when you know you’re nourishing your body. Note we’ve applied a positive emotion to the new belief here, which helps us adopt it faster (because we like to gravitate towards pleasure and away from pain). Now we must start affirming that belief regulatory and consistently, and
OVERCOMING RESISTANCE EXERCISE
importantly, reinforcing it when we’re performing the behaviour aligned with it. For example, as we eat healthy food, telling ourselves how much we’re enjoying making positive choices with our food, how much we’re loving the way it’s making our body feel, how it’s boosting our energy.
Think of a time you were going for something new in your life and resistance showed up. How did it show up? What happened? Did you continue or stop? The better we can know our patterns the more able we are to anticipate and overcome them.
We’re aligning the new belief and the new behaviour to make it congruent, which helps it stick. Over time, like crossing the rope bridge, our subconscious will accept both as our new reality. Over enough time eating poor quality food will cause you upset as that behaviour is no longer aligned with who you are.
Now think of a goal you want. How might resistance show up this time? What beliefs could you start affirming that would take you towards your goal? What actions could you take to move through the resistance?
This is how long term change is achieved and we can apply to all and any areas our life.
Remember though! Our mind loves the path of least resistance so we have to keep practising otherwise we’ll fall back into the old beliefs and behaviours until the new one is fully installed.
PERSISTENCE & CONSISTENCY WIN THE DAY

Keep it Real
THERE’S NEVER BEEN
A BETTER TIME FOR
According to the Mojo gents, ‘with the right partner, sun can turn into gold’. If you invest in the Costa del Sol, with their help, it just may do…
T
his month, Per and Jacob are back to talk about Mojo Invest, the fourth component of their real estate business. If you’re thinking about investing in property, land or development projects in Spain, then listen up, because Mojo are experienced and trusted partners, who can help make things happen. “You don’t need to be a resident of Spain to invest in the country, or to come to us for assistance,” says Per. “In fact, everyone who has enlisted with us are from overseas. They’ve got an eye for the property market, they know what they want but they just don’t quite know how to get there.” “Whether they want to reform, rent out or are looking for a quick turnover, we can help.” Investing in the Costa del Sol has always been a lucrative opportunity. But now, it’s even more attractive. With Mojo’s help, investors will be able to get a better return on investment (ROI), than ever before. What is usually 3-4% in Nordic countries, in Spain is double digits. Think +10% easily. It’s all about knowing how to navigate the market. “Since 2015, house and property prices have been steadily rising - a trend that seems set to continue. The Costa del Sol has a great diversity of property, and as a holiday destination, it’s only growing in popularity. So as long as people are investing in the right locations, properties and land, the risk is minimal,” adds Per. “That’s where we can help. Our in-depth knowledge of the local market coupled with years of business and investment experience, means we have the necessary competencies to help investors make all the right moves.” Mojo has established relationships with highly reputable building companies, not to mention their own in-house lawyers, which
60
can come in very convenient in Spain with all the licensing issues that will undoubtedly crop up. Moreover, with their help, you can greatly lower the ITP you have to pay, from 8%+ down to just 2%. Of course, all of this depends on the amount you’re investing, how long you want to keep the property, and how fast you want to flip it.
Mojo Approved There are over 200 new developments on the coast but Mojo has selected only a few for their portfolio, all of which have passed a due diligence process and meet the location, building qualities and price requirements. So once you are rolling with Mojo, you’ll only be presented with the best opportunities. Prior to any viewings or location discussions, the Mojo team talks through your budget, financing, risk diversification, expectations on the return, time-frames and tax implications - sometimes they will also advise to create a Spanish company for tax efficiency.
“There are a lot of factors in play, which is why we take the time to understand exactly what our investors want. And once we know this, the better we can manage their expectations and bring them the most lucrative investments,” says Jacob. The Mojo team creates a financial simulation on every project proposal. Over 18 sheets of excel file containing everything from the purchase and refurbishments costs to the rental projection and market forecast, before and after taxes. With this, they can provide the number every investor is interested in: the ROI percentage. “We go full circle following the money string, including a cash flow simulation. We benchmark the m2 prices on different developments and we compare these with others” explains Per. “This provides investors all the information they need to make a solid decision.” “At the moment, we have around 30 investors in our database looking for projects on the Costa del Sol. On a weekly basis, we send them different cases with their respective ROI. This also helps us grow a profile for each investor, get to know them better,” says Jacob. “Unlike Mojo Capitals, these are active investors who want to be involved in the whole process”.
Mojo Invest CLUB Per and Jacob are ready to put their money where their mouths are. Mojo Invest Club is a new initiative where the gents are looking for partners in bigger scale projects. The Mojo team searches for similarities between investors and matches them together, creating a limited company, where they could be personal shareholders as well. “It’s a business tinder” Per jokes. “We are growing a network of like-minded people and creating investment teams”

Casasola Decor. Your life. Your home.

For more than 40 years, Casasola decor has specialised in offering a high quality service, a lot of dedication, and the execution of decoration and interior design projects in all types of residences, from Marbella to Dubai.
We are currently experiencing a new global real estate boom, something that seemed improbable after the Covid pandemic, but which has accelerated new ways of understanding life, and not only in terms of remote working .
Therefore, our core strengths are our experience and in-depth knowledge of the market, both in decoration, furniture and interior design, as well as residential projects and the real estate sector in general.
In the last two years or so, our mentality has changed: we are now much more concerned about the quality of life, something that perhaps before, we didn’t dwell on so much.
We have realised that at any moment, in any place, a pandemic or an unforeseeable catastrophe can strike, and that what is really worthwhile are the moments we spend in the company of our loved ones, and doing what we like to do.

Now, the aim is to continue working, but to do so more comfortably, more efficiently, more productively, from anywhere in the world. C rafting BONGO
Eponymous Marbella design studio Heidi Gubbins headed to Granada to completely refurbish an underground space into a resplendent restaurant: Bongo. Here she talks exclusively to SOCIETY Marbella about the inspiration behind the unique design and some of the many challenges this project faced. How did a Marbella based interior designer win a contract to redesign a restaurant/bar in Granada? A very cool team of restauranteurs in Granada, had previously commissioned me to design another restaurant back in 2019, which proved to be a great success so I was invited back to share my vision for their latest project. Originally, they wanted a similar concept to before, but when I saw the space, it was instantly apparent that this project offered up some very different and interesting design choices and opportunities. What particular challenges did the cave style venue represent? We were given a very tight time-frame to execute this project and there were some challenging areas that we had to design, especially as we couldn’t touch any of the existing walls/beams or partitions. These “obstacles” we had to overcome are what makes my profession so enjoyable as every day represents different scenarios which have to be carefully thought out and executed. The entire refurb was delivered within the allotted 2.5 months’ timescale… just! What were your design inspirations?

The double height ceiling was something I knew we had to focus on to create a key feature element. We wanted to garner a feeling of grandeur and intimacy at

the same time. This is where elements like ceiling art bring the perceived height down, whilst the double height bar bring the eye up. Dark tones and textures highlighted by our lighting design were also key components to creating a cave-like feeling that is full of intrigue and buzz. We wanted to create a space that was eye-catching, sensorial and unique …. Wherever you go in the venue you’ll find an element of surprise. We collaborated with local artisans in Granada to deliver our design. From the hand painted ceiling art to the wall murals, finishes and textures, joinery and upholstery and even some of the light fixtures. Every piece was designed by us and made to measure. The lighting plays a fundamental role in this project to accentuate focal points, textures and elements, and to create contrast in the dark interior.
What was your highlight of the project? Oh, there were so many! One of my favourite moments was when we saw the 4,5-meter curved bar installed and lit. It was very gratifying to see all the elements on every level coming together. The restaurant has 3 levels, and every level needed to make an equal impact. There were many challenges throughout the process, pieces that were not easy to design given the tight time frame. Every single space of the venue has its own magic; we are thrilled with the
I hope the guests will add to the art and enjoy the atmosphere within the interior we’ve created, along with the fantastic food and service. What upcoming projects are you involved in? We are working on refurbishment turnkey projects for residential properties in Marbella, as well as the interior design of very cool new developments and various projects for private clients along the coast.

Vista Lago Residences has become the most talked about new development in Marbella. At this year’s International Property Awards it was awarded World’s Best Residential Development and also Best Architecture in Europe. In this feature we look at what makes Vista Lago different from other developments and ask why, out of 550 other developments, it was awarded the top prize?

KEEP IT REAL
We asked this question to Jason Harris, CEO of UDesign, who together with Gonzalez & Jacobsen, are the architects responsible for Vista Lago, he said: “There is no one main difference, because architectural creativity and innovation in all directions have been the driving forces in our approach from the very start. We designed each Vista Lago villa as a rich tableau of form and texture that sits perfectly on its own plot, integrated into the landscape, making it look as if it has always been there.”
Vista Lago is a gated community within a gated community, located in the country club estate of Real de La Quinta. It overlooks Marbella and the Mediterranean Sea, with views of the Rock of Gibraltar and Africa beyond. At no more than 15 minutes’ drive from the famous Golden Mile, this makes it an exceptional location in an exceptional part of Spain. The unique setting boasts one of the largest man-made lakes on the Costa del Sol, with a full range of water sports available, also featuring an exclusive golf course with wellness centre and spa, tennis and paddle tennis, a boutique hotel, equestrian centre, shops and top-end restaurant.
78
KEEP IT REAL
Design is the key word in Vista Lago, and it goes well beyond the design of each actual home. All are designed differently, which is quite unique in even the most luxurious of developments, and built to the highest standards possible. Each villa has a generous plot, and having been built on the highest plot in Real de La Quinta, none is overlooked by any other. Building density was sacrificed for the benefit of space, exceptional views and total privacy, but this does not translate to a lack of space. No wasted space in hallways and corridors, an absence of walls where one would normally expect to find them, a house that works just as well outside as in.
79
KEEP IT REAL
A layout was created for the living area that would maximise the views – so whether standing in the kitchen, sitting at the dining table, relaxing on the sofa or sunbathing on the terrace, the view is ever-present. Every area of the lounge and terrace looks straight out to the sea.
Each villa has not only visual privacy but also audio privacy. A future owner, relaxing in their living room or on their terrace, will have a clear sea view without seeing any of the other villas. When talking on their own terrace, they won’t be able to hear other owners chatting on their terraces. Essentially, the villas are designed in such a way that owners will be completely oblivious to their neighbours.
80
KEEP IT REAL
Each villa will be built to each client’s preference, reflecting their way of life, personal taste and family circumstances. Residents will be able to pick and choose individually tailored designs as they wish in a wide variety of ways, from saunas to fully-equipped spas, home offices, gymnasiums and multi-use basements being just some of the options available.
The design of Vista Lago incorporates a plethora of architectural innovations. One of these innovations are the distinctive beams that wrap around the hallway of each villa – they are not just a beautiful design feature. Once the floorto-ceiling windows in the living area are fully opened, they slide into special glass walls in the hallway, giving unrestricted views in the lounge and creating a light-filled hallway that also has unrestricted views to the sea.
Showers with built-in spaces for your bathroom goodies, kitchen surfaces that charge your iPhone, unnoticeable but ample storage spaces, glass walls that slide away at the touch of a button, and many other seemingly minor design elements that, in fact, change your life.
81
KEEP IT REAL
This is less evident on sight alone, but can, nevertheless, be clearly seen in the use of natural materials throughout each villa. All villas are in the process of being BREEAM certified, which guarantees a high level of environmental performance and reduction of the impact of each building both during the construction stage and throughout its life cycle. Specifically, it means improved energy efficiency at all levels, including electricity saving through state-of-the-art heat recovery and intelligent control systems, a comprehensive photovoltaic installation, all LED lighting, increased thermal insulation thickness of the building envelope and an indoor ventilation system with both exhaust and intake heat recovery. Water will be saved by a variety of innovative measures. Treatment systems, including drip irrigation for grey water and rainwater, dual-flush toilets, pressurized tap systems, efficient water storage, soil moisture sensors to regulate irrigation cycles and many more measures are all part and parcel of each villa. Light sensors are used in all outdoor lighting, and all indoor installations comply with the highest of official regulatory requirements. Of special visual interest is the solar lighting used in communal spaces throughout the development, illuminating the plants and stones on roundabouts and other areas to create a soft and intimate ambience, lowering its impact on the natural environment.
Every home in Vista Lago, inside and out, is designed in such a way to maximise the health and wellbeing of its occupants. Owners can choose to have organic vegetable plots in their gardens, mini orchards and kitchen herb gardens. With charging points for electric cars, and pollution from light, noise and emissions dramatically reduced, a luxurious yet completely sustainable lifestyle can be fully realised. Add to all this the innovations in sustainable materials used in all Vista Lago villas and in land use, protection and creation of natural habitat, strict pollution control with regard to waste and water run-off, and you have a subsequent increase in health and wellbeing in a safe and sustainable environment for now and for the foreseeable future.

With a highly-tuned 1.1 litre motor, which increased in size to 1.3 and 1.6 litres over time, the 706kg A110 stormed to many competition wins including the 1971 Monte Carlo Rally. This was the year Alpine (pronounced Alpeen) was acquired by Renault. Two years later the International Championship was replaced by the World Rally Championship, and the A110 won most of the races that the factory works team was entered. By the end of its third year in the crucible of international motorsport Alpine stood tall as the first ever World Rally Champion. While Porsche’s 911, which had won the Monte Carlo rally in 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1978, went on to become a living legend the descendants of its French counterpart hobbled along under the aegis of parent company Renault, before finally fading into obscurity in 1991. Fast Forward to 2012, and to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Alpine A110 Renault announced that the A110 would be “coming back” after over two decades of the Alpine name lying dormant. In alliance with the then Caterham F1 team, they showed a concept car called the A110-50, a simple lightweight mid-engine sports car with few frills but lots of driver thrills, just like the original.
98 98
Unfortunately the Caterham F1 team did not survive beyond 2013. This meant that the alliance was dissolved, and with it the enticing prospect of an all-new car from one of France’s most iconic sports car companies. With Gaelic pride and the need for an image making sportscar at stake, Renault decided to go it alone and
resurrected the legendary Alpine brand all by itself. And so a couple of years later the all-new A110 was unveiled, featuring a bespoke version of the Renault/Nissan 1.8-litre TCe M5P turbocharged four-cylinder engine mounted behind the passengers in a diminutive coupe bodyshell made almost entirely from aluminium.
TORQUE TALK
The pre-production car looked stunning and very obviously paid homage to the original A110 in its styling as well as its engineering brief. And now that we have sampled the fruits of Alpine’s fiveyear endeavour, we are happy to say that the result is little short of sensational. With a mid-engine configuration, double wishbone suspension all-round, and most of its body panels fashioned from aluminium, this pretty little coupe boasts an impressively low kerb weight of just 1,103 kg with all fluids topped off.
the engine is a turbocharged, directinjection 1,798cc four-cylinder 16-valve unit that comes in two power outputs; 252hp and 288hp.
play and this is sufficient to propel the A110 to 100 km/h in a claimed 4.5 sec, and on to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
Our test car was the entry-level A110 Pure with 252hp at 6,000rpm and 320Nm of torque from 2,000 to 5,000rpm. This is where the low kerb weight comes into
The A110S version has a larger turbocharger to help it produce 292hp at 7,400rpm, the unchanged peak torque value indicating a headroom limit imposed by gearbox and drivetrain reliability and longevity. In line with its more track focused mission the ‘S’ version also benefits from uprated suspension, carbon ceramic brakes and stickier Michelin PS4 rubber. This ‘S’ version has the same top speed and shaves 0.1 sec from the 0-100km/h sprint.
The basic construction method is not dissimilar to that used by Lotus, which means two immensely stiff extrusions either side of the cabin for stiffness, and the chassis and body elements glued and riveted to these. The only welded parts are to found on the rear sub-frame, which carries the engine as the extreme heat in this area would compromise the bonding adhesives over time. Positioned aft of the cabin for a 44/56 percent front/rear weight distribution,
Economy and emissions are highly competitive with a claimed 6.1 L/100km combined figure and 138g/ km. Somewhat controversially, perhaps, the A110 is not available with a manual gearbox, Alpine instead going with a seven-speed Getrag dual-clutch gearbox with aluminium paddles fixed to the steering column.
You can choose from Normal, Sport and Track drive modes that alter the parameters for the engine, gearbox, steering, exhaust, ESC and e-diff to suit the road conditions and your mood as you scroll through the menu. However, as Alpine wanted to maintain a degree of comfort, as well as control across the board the firm but compliant damper setting wisely remains unchanged throughout.
the job of a limited slip differential, but with added control under braking and during turn in.
Alpine wanted to keep the A110’s aesthetics as pure as possible so there is no overt rear wing. Instead, a functional rear underbody diffuser and some clever aerodynamics at both ends of the car help to generate the required stability at high speed. Also focused on reducing drag these measures result in a Cd of 0.32, which is respectable but nothing to write home about these days.
Nearly 50 years down the line the new Alpine’s rival is not the 911, which has become much bigger, heavier and more expensive in the interim, but its mid-engine Cayman younger brother.
The rear axle electronic differential features a torque vectoring system, which tickles the brakes on opposite sides to stabilise the car when loss of traction is detected. This effectively does

In simple terms the Alpine weighs nearly 262 kg less than the entry-level 300hp 2.0 litre turbocharged 718 Cayman PDK. This gives it a superior power-to-weight ratio and less inertia, while the turbocharged in-line four makes more mellifluous sounds than Porsche’s turbocharged flat-four with its off-beat Subaru-like noise. In short, The A110 is quicker, more agile, has a nicer soundtrack, is built to an equally high standard, and looks rather lovely too.

Despite its relatively compact exterior dimensions, the A110 does not actually feel small or cramped inside. Alpine MD, Michael van der Sande, is a towering six foot seven inches tall and he fits into it - just. So for anyone of remotely regular proportions, there is actually plenty of room. First impressions are of outstanding build quality in the bodyshell, paint and interior where most of the fittings look and feel solid and hewn from quality materials. There is also surprise and delight in the cabin with the design and execution of many details making for an up market look and feel not far off that you would expect to find in a sports car with a Porsche or Ferrari badge on its nose. It is only in some areas such as the plastic switchgear on the steering column that has obviously been drawn from the deep Renault parts bin where the quality mask slips slightly.
The Sabelt race-style seats actually proved very comfortable and did not produce the aches we get from Porsche’s 918 Spyder style buckets for instance. Nicely trimmed in leather these cosy, figure-hugging seats perfectly complement the driving position along with a steering wheel adjustable for reach and rake. On the downside the infotainment sat-nav system is not exactly state-of-the-art and is at least a generation and a half behind current offerings from Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche. If luggage space for touring is important the front bonnet compartment will take a couple of small airline carry-ons, and is supplemented by a smaller compartment in the rear. In this respect the Porsche Cayman offers far more luggage space with its deep front boot and spacious rear under-hatch load area. Pressing the big red ‘Start/Stop button on the centre console generates a distinctive throaty burst of noise from behind your head as the 252hp engine catches and settles down to a meaningful burble at idle. To get moving you first have to press the ‘D’ button, the left of the three in the centre console, an arrangement strongly reminiscent of Ferraris of recent vintage. You then engage first gear via the right-hand paddle shifter.

TORQUE TALK
From the moment you move off the A110 feels right. In fact it feels great, as only the very best sorted cars do. For starters there is a refreshing absence of inertia from the word go, not just via the light and tactile electric power steering but through the seat of your pants too. Meanwhile its compact size means placement on even small roads is not an issue like it is with modern supercars whose ever increasing girth gives cause for concern. The first few bumps taken at town speeds underline the inherent rigidity of the body structure and the suppleness of the suspension’s secondary ride. Where some sporting cars cannon off short, sharp bumps, the A110 moves down the road in a fluid and confident manner as its springs and dampers control body movement in a totally accomplished manner. Alpine’s chassis engineers have done a great job here, the perfectly matched spring and damper set-up nicely rounding off small bumps to maintain a relatively serene and comfortable ride around town. As the A110 is a dedicated sports car it is never going to be limousine smooth, but in combination with the well-padded sports seats neither it will it trigger a date with your osteopath. When the open road beckons and you put your foot down the Alpine responds like an eager stallion, sounding raspy, sporting, and potent in the process. Being turbocharged and of relatively small displacement, the 1.8 litre four has a touch of lag, and when the power arrives, it does so in an old-fashioned kind of turbo rush that sees the motor spin strongly and freely past 6,000rpm peak power point in each gear ratio. This actually adds to the A110’s overall character.
The seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox works just fine and is fast acting and efficient but is not a highlight of the mechanical package. It is certainly no match for Porsche’s faster, more fluid and responsive PDK transmission. That said, its automatic blips on downshifts are well executed with some nice crackles on the overrun in Sport and Track modes. The twisting road that I used for much of my test drive shone a spotlight on the one ergonomic flaw in the major controls. In common with Ferrari models the A110’s lovely aluminium shift paddles are fixed to the steering column. Unfortunately they are relatively short at the top and nonexistent below the four and eight o’ clock positions due to the minor controls on the steering column transplanted from some Renault family model. Thus, when you are attacking a winding road and the top of the steering wheel is past 80-degrees off-centre it is impossible to fire off an upshift without removing a hand from the wheel. For all the potential excellence elsewhere, the real star of the show is the chassis. Using the classic sportscar recipe of double unequal length wishbones at each corner to support its light and strong aluminium body and frame, the A110 has the on-paper credentials to deliver ride and handling greatness.

Even with expectations running so high, it is the way the car flows down realworld roads, “breathing” over varied surfaces like only the best cars from Lotus and Porsche do that comes as a very pleasant surprise. Aided and abetted by the light, delicate and accurate steering that delivers genuine feel through its rim in every driving mode, you can place the A110 to the nearest millimetre through most bends. It is not long before you gain total faith in the front end whose turn-in response is crisp, without being hyper-reactive. The chassis responds well to the race style technique of trail braking into a bend, balancing the chassis on constant throttle until it is time to accelerate as you unwind the wheel on the way out.
The tail is well in tune with the front end with very high levels of mechanical grip on a dry road, making the 320Nm peak torque on tap feel inadequate to broach the realms of power oversteer without quite deliberate provocation. While all this is going on you are always aware of a fundamental composure to the ride that provides the A110 with a very satisfying feeling of superior dynamic excellence. A relatively low volume car in a world of boring hot hatchbacks and pumped-up high-performance family saloons the Alpine A110’s formula of an outstanding chassis and above average engine wrapped in a chic and distinctive body come across like a breath of fresh air.

ROMBOSOL OFFICIAL ALPINE CENTER OPENS IN MARBELLA
The ambitious Alpine brand is rolling out a strategic plan that is based on a strong product activity and a unique commitment within motorsport, including Formula 1.
IT IS NOW POSSIBLE TO ORDER THE NEW RANGE OF ITS ICONIC MODEL, THE A110. During the event, guests enjoy a F1 simulator and a Formula 1 of the Alpine F1 Team, as well as a store of Alpine products.
Marbella welcomes the Alpine brand which, founded in 1955 by the pilot Jean Rédélé, is characterized as being the union of competition, elegance and innovation. After a history plagued with success, the brand is currently marketing the reinterpretation of the A110, an elegant and innovative sports car that at the same time remains faithful to the concept of lightness and dynamism reminiscent of the original saloon from the 1960s.
Last month’s event, at the facilities of Rombosol in Marbella located at C/ Juan de la Cierva 14, exhibited several Alpine A110 along with many surprises. As part of the brand’s strategy, in 2021 Alpine F1 Team was created, whose official drivers are Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon who recently presented the single-seater in which they will compete in this year’s world championship. The event also presented the new A110 range, composed of three versions: A110, A110 GT and A110 S. In addition, the brand recently confirmed the production of its X-Over GT which will hit the market on the horizon of 2025 along with two other models, all being 100% electric. These three new cars will form a “Dream Garage” sporty, elegant and faithful to the principles of the brand. In this way, Rombosol not only brings Alpine to Marbella, but also prepares for the promising and ambitious future of the French brand. www.rombosol.com

JAMMIN’
G
ranted it’s only just April (Yaaaaaaayyy, it’s already April!!) but the hard fought “Embarrassing Dad of the Year” category recently found a solid frontrunner in the unwitting patriarch who managed to take out an entire town’s internet. When locals amongst the roughly 1000 people occupying the Southwestern French beach community of Messanges complained to service providers about regular outages in their internet, the resulting investigations culminated in the government’s Agence Nationale des Fréquences (I’ll let you translate that and if you can’t, you really shouldn’t be living abroad!) wading in, tracking the root of the interruptions to an illegal jamming device at a private residence. The gadget, used to confuse both WIFI and mobile phone signals, had been purchased by the dad, on the instigation of participants on online message boards (go figure!) in an attempt to curb the spiralling social media addictions of his kids. Set to block his children’s access to the internet between the hours of midnight and 3am, the desperate dad inadvertently hamstrung the nocturnal habits of the entire town... and you do not want to get between an angry Gauloises-smoking old man and his porn. The father, who, despite over four Google searches on my part (before
104
I got bored and went on Facebook) remains unnamed, presumably to protect his already mortified children from further ridicule and shame. According to French law, he now faces a fine of 30,000 euros and up to six months in jail!! Frankly, if your teenage kids – and i’m reading between the lines here but they HAVE to be teenagers – are so volatile, the mere suggestion of plausible deniability has you scouring the dark web for an illegal telecommunications jamming device rather than confronting them or, God forbid, asking them to turn over their phones at night, half a year in prison probably sounds like just the type of vacation the Daily Mail would have us believe it is. Nevertheless, there must have been a more rational parenting solution available for this particular dilemma. Presumably the children’s mother left when dad called in a napalm strike because she kept leaving her tights on the floor. Poor decisions and the serious implications of disrupted internet in an emergency notwithstanding, you’d hope the French courts would exercise some leniency here, lest the children, who are already on a clearly slippery slope (3am on a school night??!!) spend six months fatherless; Nobody to give them lifts to see their real life friends or provide them with pocket money to hang out with their real life friends or regularly cook for them and their real life friends... or receive nothing but open disdain and withering eye-rolls from them and their real life bloody friends. Faintly comical as it may have been, the case once more drew our generally distracted attention (well, mine at least) to our insane online habits and the pervasive addictiveness of platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Twitter and fucking Wordle (FYI, I got it in 3 today mum!!) Watch early footage of people from way before we had laptops, smartphones, cameras or any other type of footage-recording device and you’ll see happy, dirty people going about their business, usually in a funny
sped up fashion, sometimes in sepia, sometimes black and white, sometimes stuck up a chimney or eaten by a sabre-tooth tiger, but never just staring gormlessly at TikTok or getting upset enough people didn’t like the photo they took of themselves on the smartphone they didn’t have yet. As of 2020, amongst internet users worldwide, average daily social media usage amounted to 145 minutes. That’s 2 ½ hours of mindless feed scrolling, with a five minute break for a biscuit and a wee. When you consider that my dad isn’t even on social media and so clocks a zero, that means someone else is doing FIVE hours daily, with two biscuit and wee breaks... or possibly 10 minutes for a sandwich and a poo... Could even be no breaks, five hours, straight through. Could be social media, wee, social media, biscuit, social media, sandwich....Could be five hours social media whilst pooing!! (They might need to look at what they’re putting in their sandwiches!)
In 2006, technology engineer Aza Raskin designed the infinite scroll, an app feature now strongly linked to habit forming behaviour. By endlessly scrolling through content, hoping for the next tasty morsel, however ultimately calorie-free it may prove, we’ve unconsciously been playing slot machines with our attention. “If you don’t give your brain time to catch up with your impulses,” he said, “you just keep scrolling.” Before you know it, it’s 3am... and you still haven’t done your French homework.
...Any way you slice it (the statistics, not the sandwich), it’s too much! Unfortunately, it’s an unspoken (sometimes spoken) goal of the social media platforms to make their products addictive. The co-inventor of the Like button on Facebook, Leah Pearlman, admits she found herself basing her own sense of selfworth on the number of likes she got, returning to the platform whenever she felt lonely, vulnerable or in need of validation. Who doesn’t whip out their phone when they don’t know what else to do with themselves in any given moment? They’re simultaneously our comforters and the source of so much of our anxiety, fleetingly scratching itches they continuously create.
As of 2020, amongst
internet users worldwide,
average daily social media usage amounted to 145
minutes. That’s 2.5 hours of mindless feed scrolling,

Like Einstein with the atomic bomb, Raskin now professes guilt that his innovation should prove as potentially damaging to mind as that was to body. In 2017 Facebook’s founding president Sean Parker stated publicly that the company set out to dominate as much of user’s time as possible, “exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology”. Since then, Facebook has been front and centre in dozens of scandals, not limited to profits over privacy, antitrust, election and referendum interference, misinformation propagation, governmental political manipulation, insurrection and genocide-incitement. ...and you thought it was just pictures of people’s lunch.

Bettina, our resident foodie, offers her insider knowledge on plant based cuisine and takes us on a culinary journey as she travels the world in search of gastronomic inspiration.
h c a n i p S FOOD FOR THE BONES
Many greens are good sources of two nutrients which are essential for your bone health vitamin K and calcium. Leafy greens such as spinach, kale, broccoli, spring greens and bok choy are all excellent sources of both of these nutrients. I am going to focus on spinach here. Spinach is packed with nutrients. Just one cup of raw spinach delivers 181% of the daily recommended value of Vitamin K and 56% of Vitamin A.5. Also there are different varieties and with spring upon us there will be plenty to go around! Spinach does best when growing in moist, nitrogen rich soil. It is also an incredibly generous plant as it is the gift that keeps on giving. Once you have harvested your spinach all you have to do is wait patiently until it grows back up again. Its a great plant to grow in your garden and easy to maintain. You just need to keep those pesky slugs away! This ticks off the wastefree box! I’m lucky enough to live close to a fantastic Japanese shop, with lots of authentic Japanese fresh fruit and vegetables, and delicacies. I have used Japanese spinach in this dish however any type of spinach or greens will work too. The peanut dressing is a lovely match, bringing a great zing to an otherwise very simple dish. Easy to make and can be ready in minutes!

COSTA CUISINE
Steamed Spinach with a Zingy Peanut Dressing Makes 4 servings as a side INGREDIENTS: • 1 large bunch of Japanese spinach (or regular spinach) • 1 tbsp tamari, or soy sauce • 1 tbsp sesame oil For the Peanut Dressing: • 50g smooth peanut butter • juice of 1 lemon • 10ml maple syrup • 1 tsp ginger, grated • 1 clove garlic, grated • 1 tbsp tamari, or soy sauce For the Topping: • chilli sauce • sesame seeds • chives, chopped METHOD: Fill a large frying pan 1/3 full of water and bring to the boil. Chop the bunch of spinach in half, keeping the stems. Add 1 tbsp tamari to the boiling water, then add the spinach to the pan and turn off the heat. Add a lid and leave to steam for approx 5 minutes. Meanwhile make the dressing by adding all the ingredients to a bowl and mix well to combine. Drain the spinach then drizzle with sesame oil and massage this gently into the spinach. Arrange on a nice platter, add the peanut dressing over the top, and sprinkle with chilli sauce, sesame seeds and chives.
Veganism can be both very exciting and easy. I have three books to choose from - the 7 Day Vegan Challenge being the one that fits the ‘how to go vegan bill’ the best. All of the books are available on AMAZON.

Paired to Perfection NOBU MARBELLA WHISKY EXPERIENCE By Mik Sweeney Photos by Leandro G. Vega
For those of you who like whisky but are not familiar with the unique Japanese offerings, do yourself a favour and try them! And what better opportunity than to have an exquisite food tasting to match? Nobu have done just that, thanks to their partnership with Suntory, master craft producers of fine Japanese blends and single malts and their head chef Eleni Manousou, they have designed an exquisite pairing of Whisky based cocktails, entrees and mains to delight the senses. I highly recommend a dram of the Yamasaki 12 to finish off after the dessert... as close as one can get to a perfect Haiku!
Suntory Karai Sour The first cocktail was like a first trip to Katmandhu, overwhelming the senses with its peach colour and vibrant rosemary garnish & explosions of spice, citrus tangerine and heady blend of grapefruit and vanilla of the Suntory Toki Whisky, which as Toki means “time” couldn’t have started off the tasting better.
Tuna Sashimi, Takuan Cucumber and Ponzu As we relished the first cocktail, the first plate appeared; deep red tuna, layered over cucumber slices seeming to float in a milky sea of ponzu. The combination of the soft, fresh tuna, crisp cucumber and classic ponzu was perfect, the drizzle of young olive oil adding a welcome touch of Andalucía to the dish as finishing off the pickled Daikon.

COSTA CUISINE
Suntory Cappuccino As we washed down the rich duck breast with the Old Fashioned, the Cappuccino appeared, and we were told to savor the layers with a spoon. Normally I’m not much into desserts, but since it looked like a coffee I figured I would try it and I just couldn’t stop! Layers of whisky foam, coffee bean, cookie crumb textures, chocolate flakes, ice cream and something creamy and rich at the bottom! Just couldn’t get enough!
Chef Sushi Selection The simple three piece sushi plate looked perfectly balanced, elegant, and colourful, just like the décor in the restaurant. I started with the salmon as I figured it would be the lesser of the three from local experience, but was delighted to be wrong. It was lean for salmon but full of flavour and I just kept thinking they must have an excellent source. The seabass was next, and hidden between the fish and rice was a leaf of shisho, or Japanese basil which leans more towards mint yet just complemented the subtle seabass and rice so well.
Roast Duck with Málaga wine Teriyaki, Foie Gras and black Pepper The presentation was simply beautiful again, the deep rich red center of the duck breast which reminded me of the tuna belly we started with, yet seared with a golden crispy crust on the outside. The side of foie gras and sautéed mushrooms covered in dark perfumed wine teriyaki was truly mouth watering. And the flavours were all there! Knowing the dark and sweet nuances of Málaga wines, I found it a perfect pairing in every mouthful.
To sum it up it was an experience well worth repeating, and we would like to thank the staff at Nobu for their excellent service and especially head chef Eleni Manousou for this true masterpiece of a pairing menu. We will certainly be back and what can we say... Nobu just keeps getting better! ___________________ marbella.nobuhotels.com
And finally, the Red Mullet, which we don’t often see on sushi menus on the coast, though a local fish and I was keen to experience again. It certainly did not disappoint. As the morsel melted in my mouth i got hints reminding me of Amaebi or sweet shrimp and then full, rich and powerful notes similar to Toro or Tuna Belly, yet it was delicate also. Superb. On a side note, the temperature they serve the fish at is precise and brings out all the flavours and nuances that one should taste.
Seven Spices Old Fashioned As we finished off the last drops of the first cocktail wondering if we should order another, the Old Fashioned appeared. Beautiful hues of pink and amber with the maraschino boldly peering out from under the ice. It was delicious and at this point, thirst quenching, but I recommend to take some ice cubes out to enjoy the delicate flavours of the Suntory and not let them get too diluted.
Truffle Risotto and Scallop Flambèed with Suntory Whisky I was very eager to try this dish as I love truffles, risotto and scallops… and it did not disappoint. The scallops were perfect, with a hint of whisky, the truffle sauce was powerful and creamy and the combination with the risotto just brought it all together.
