PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Welcome to April – and you wouldn’t be a fool for thinking that summer is just around the corner!

A

t the beginning of May some of our favourite beach clubs, including the reliably excellent La Sala By the Sea, will open their doors for another season of serious partying, so cast off those sensible warmer clothes and get ready to move back for some more poolside action. We are so lucky to be living in Marbella because few other places in the world have such an amazingly vibrant summertime scene. If you like sun and parties (and who doesn’t?) then this place is as close to paradise as you’re going to get. Of course, the longer days and warmer weather means that our local cafés, bars and restaurants will soon fill up with holidaymakers, so if you live here all the year round it’s great to have the heads up on promising new venues. Two of our more recent favourites are featured in this issue: Cibo and Voulez Vous might not have been around for very long but respectively they serve some of the best Italian and French food on the Coast. Also on the subject of food we feature some excellent advice from Bettina, who says that it’s not necessary to pay for expensive superfoods when certain vegetables contain all the nutrients that you need. We also bring you the latest hair trends from the runway and peep behind the doors of Finca Cortesin’s exclusive and ultra private spa to find out what five-star luxury looks like. Our cover star this month is the very talented (and still ridiculously young) Taylor Swift. Despite having been one of the music world’s biggest stars for some years, she is still only 25 years old and, given her talent at spotting suitable collaborators such as Ed Sheeran, she is likely to be appearing on magazine covers around the world

for years to come. No wonder Kanye West isn’t a fan! We particularly enjoyed April’s fashion shoot, which took place in an abandoned train carriage in San Pedro and features some great clothes courtesy of Flamingo Market Place, an outlet which is fast becoming famous for its original and diverse range of clothing, which cannot be found anywhere else. Models Egle and Libby are signed to Mac Models Agency and show that we need look no longer to the nation’s big cities to cast our fashion shoots. Good job, girls! We enjoyed some great events this month, including Slainte’s fantastic, not-to-be-missed St. Patrick’s Day bash. Who knew that Guinness could deliver such a punch? It was very quiet in the SOCIETY Marbella office the day after, I can tell you! That was one fun night out. There was also a brilliant fundraising fashion show that raised almost 3000€ for our friends at Cudeca and the opening of Manzanilla, a great new restaurant in Benahavís. Anyone who has ever spent any time in Marbella will tell you that it’s a great place to have fun, whether your idea of a good day means a sun-bed on the beach or a party that lasts all night. Okay, so these days we tend to party all year round, but the summer does tend to bring out the party animal in the least sociable person. With the longest days just around the corner, let’s hope that you see April as an opportunity to blow the dust off your glad-rags and get ready for some serious fun! Until next time... Andy Clark

Nobody Wants to Shake Off The Girl

Taylor Swift

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

“People haven’t always been there for me but music always has.”

H

er legs are insured for $40 million, she’s a serial dater who counts One Direction’s Harry Styles, Joe Jonas and Twilight star Taylor Lautner among her exes and she is one of the biggest selling music artists of all time. This month our cover star is, of course, the sweet yet sassy American songstress Taylor Swift. The world first looked up and noticed new girl on the block Taylor Swift back in 2008 as she serenaded us with the lyrics, “It’s a love story, baby just say yes…” from her hit single ‘Love Story’. The track sold more than eight million copies worldwide, thereby establishing itself as one of the best-selling singles of all time. This innocent looking, blonde-haired 18 year old quickly proved she was not just a pretty face as she released hit record after hit record and became as much known for her song-writing ability as her dreamy vocals. Songs including ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’, ‘22’ and ‘Shake It Off’ have all placed Taylor in the most listened to artist of our times. Her life in the spotlight has now lasted seven years or so and we’ve seen both Taylor’s image and sound move with the times. However, unlike the Mileys and Rihannas of our generation, Swift has resisted the urge to strip off her clothes or develop some outrageous dance move as the years have passed by. Aside from chopping off her locks into ‘it’ hairstyle of the moment the ‘lob’ (or long bob to us), she has remained fresh faced, fashion savvy and red carpet ready, no doubt solidifying her status as a genuine musical talent. Needless to say Taylor’s love life seems to have lasted a lot longer than seven years, with romances with everyone

from grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, Conor Kennedy to Zac Efron and Jake Gyllenhall. It’s no secret that the singer’s various relationships have been the inspiration behind most of her songs, who can forget that performance of ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ at the Brit Awards in which Taylor seemed to direct the entire piece at ladies’ man Harry Styles who was sitting just metres away from the stage.

don’t worry.” They knew nothing about the industry and had no involvement in entertainment, but I was obsessed with it and so they did their research and read up about it to help me in every way they could. They’re amazing people.” The hard work most definitely paid off as Taylor has sold over 40 million albums worldwide, four times the number of fellow American singer Katy Perry.

Another of Taylor’s associations, which was highly spoken about in the media was that of the singer and her bff, Ed Sheeran. The pair remained ‘just friends’, although many sources reported on Ed’s infatuation with the American star. This duo was a match in musical heaven and the track they recorded together ‘Everything has Changed’ was simple and stunning.

To me, ‘FEARLESS’ is not the absence of fear. It’s not being completely unafraid. ‘FEARLESS’ is having doubts. Lots of them. To me, ‘FEARLESS’ is living in spite of those things that scare you to death.

The folk sound to the duet with Sheeran harks back to the 25 yearold’s roots as a country music star. At 14, Taylor moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a career in country. Speaking to the Daily Mail, she said “My parents took all the pressure off by saying, “We’re just moving because we love the area, so

22

Beauty and success is an enviable formula and, although we might be a little bit in love with Swifty, not everyone shares our positive view of the star. Kanye West felt so strongly about the singer, he interrupted her acceptance speech back in 2009 at the Video Music Awards when Taylor won the award for Best Female Video. “I’m sorry, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!” the rapper complained. A stunned Taylor Swift handled it well under the circumstances, acting with her usual decorum and grace, receiving an apology from West in the process. This slight hiccup did not slow the pop singer down - in fact it increased her popularity tenfold. Last year was a particular success story for Taylor with stand out performances at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show in London and the 56th Grammy Awards. The page for 2015 is however still relatively unwritten for the singer, but with a new album to promote and her 1989 world tour about to commence, the ever-popular singer songwriter has the world at her feet.

HOT OFF THE S PRES

Tur n up! it ‘All Cried Out’ Blonde ft. Alex Newell

The Gemini Effect by Chuck Grossart

Younger by Suzanne Munshower

When PR pro Anna Wallingham gets dumped by her last client, she finds herself running out of options in LA, where looks trump experience. Desperate to prove she is still relevant, the fiftysomething accepts a shady job offer from Pierre Barton, secretive billionaire owner of Barton Pharmaceuticals. Isolated in a facility outside London, she agrees to test a new top-secret product guaranteed to make her look thirty years younger. Anna is starting to look on the outside the way she feels on the inside: ageless. But she soon discovers that her predecessor died under mysterious circumstances, leading her to research just who stands to gain - and lose - from this miraculous product. When Pierre drops dead in front of her, she takes off on a dangerous journey across Europe hoping to stay alive long enough to uncover the truth. With the hard-won knowledge that younger isn’t always better, Anna is determined to escape and reclaim her life before it’s too late.

A single raindrop opens a Pandora’s box when the spawn of perverse genetic research performed during World War II is unleashed on an unsuspecting modern world. By dawn, only a dead city remains, eerily quiet and still, except for mutant beasts that hide from the light, multiply, and await the shadows of night to continue their relentless advance. Ordered to investigate the unfolding crisis, bio warfare specialist Carolyn Ridenour barely escapes the creatures’ nocturnal onslaught, saved in the nick of time by Colonel Garrett Hoffman, who lost hundreds of his troops to a swarm that neither bombs nor bullets can stop. As Carolyn and Garrett race to stop the plague, a battered and broken government prepares to release the fury of America’s nuclear arsenal on its own soil and its own citizens.

UK house duo Blonde is back with this hot new single, which will have you desperate for summer. The track features powerful piano chords and that signature house beat for which the pair have become known.

‘Cool’ - Alesso ft. Roy English

This single has also been generating a huge amount of interest, it is catchy and fun. In the official music video, the Swedish DJ shows off a whole new side of his personality, undergoing a major transformation from chic DJ to geek Californian schoolboy.

‘I Want you to Know’ – Zedd ft. Selena Gomez

Pop star Selena Gomez, who was dating DJ Zedd when they recorded this track, gets the opportunity to showcase her true vocal ability on this highly anticipated collaboration. Even Ryan Tedder of One Republic fame is a fan: “Selena did a bang up job,” he told reporters, “she killed it.”

‘Imperfection’ - Tinchy Stryder ft. Fuse ODG Tinchy has been quiet for the last couple of years, but he is definitely making one hell of a comeback with this track with Ghanian musician Fuse ODG. It has an infectious energy that will keep you replaying the song over and over again.

The Rich List This group of under 30s are not only young and beautiful, but they are stinking rich as well. We have trawled the Internet, researched advertising deals, studied modelling campaigns and compiled a Rich List of young superstars who are eye-wateringly wealthy.

Robert Pattinson

The London-born actor first found fame playing Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire but really hit the big time in the Twilight movies. His relationship with co-star Kristen Stewart was never out of the media, but with earnings of $100 million, we can’t say his life

Keira Knightley

Heat magazine confirmed that the British actress is worth just under £40 million. Despite this staggering wealth, Knightley was said to pay herself a relatively meagre £30,000 a year salary. It seems the 29-year-old prefers to do lots of things on a smaller scale; at her wedding in 2013 only 11 guests were invited to the ceremony.

seems too shabby

Cara Delevingne The aristocratic 22-year-old supermodel has an inherited wealth of £30 million, yet has accumulated a personal fortunate in her own right after appearing in advertising campaigns for designers such as Chanel, Burberry and Mulberry. Forbes has reported that she is the highest paid model in the world and Heat calculated her earnings as just shy of £8 million.

One Direction

This fivesome comprises the richest boy band of all time, with a reported combined wealth of £70million, according to the Daily Mail. One D’s huge success over the pond has contributed significantly to this figure. Between them, they own Range Rovers, Porsches, Bentleys and Harry recently bought himself an Audi R8 coupé worth £100,000.

Daniel Radcliffe

The actor was just 11 when he first hit the big screen as boy wizard, Harry Potter. Thanks to the immense popularity of the first film, by age 12 Radcliffe was earning more money than his parents. He now has an estimated wealth of £64 million.

Rihanna

There never seems to be a moment when Bajan beauty, Rihanna isn’t making hit music or launching some clothes line or other. The singer’s strong work ethic is definitely reflected in her net worth, which the Daily Mail predicted to be $120 million.

Emma Watson

Another Harry Potter star features on our Rich List, as 24-year-old Emma Watson enters with a wealth of £30 million. The actress not only starred in box office smashes but was also the face of Burberry for a number of years. It was recently announced that she will also appear as Belle in an adaptation of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

Whether it’s trying hair extensions for the first time or just a subtle colour change, Zoe Woods, Director of this brilliant Marbella salon caters for any taste or budget. So go on treat your tresses at Wood Hairdressing.

Wash Winter of

Your Hair

Kim Kardashian went short and platinum blonde, Beyonce got a curly fringe and Kylie Jenner went green - then back to black. Not all of us have a glam squad to change our hairstyle whenever we want and, in the fickle world of fashion and beauty, it’s hard to stay in the know about the dos and don’ts for your day-to-day look. Fear not, however, as this month we spoke with Zoe from Woods Hairdressing who gave us the top hair trends for Spring/Summer 2015.

Styling

Colour It’s all about being bold and bright this season; if that sounds too scary then incorporate various pastel shades into your hair. Celebrities such as Kelly Osbourne, Fearne Cotton and Ellie Goulding have championed this trend, colouring their hair with pink, lilac and peach hues. The ombre effect is here to stay but use different techniques to create individual looks. Redken offers a take home service for sun protection with their range of ‘Colour Extend Sun’ products including shampoo, conditioner, mask and an oil to spray on dry hair, which combats sun damage with its built-in UVA and UVB filters. Perfect for the golfers out there! Between your hair colour visits to the salon, book in for a colour refresher with high shine and conditioner. These treatments will restore the depth of colour removed and damaged by the intense sun that we appreciate but which your hair does not! This service with a blow dry is quick and easy, so you do not have to spend hours in the salon.

36

Casual waves and curls continue to be a hugely popular spring/ summer trend. This boho beach look is created using a curling wand - simply adjust the twirl of the wand for the desired effect from a soft, tousled texture to tighter, glamorous ringlets. Celebrities left, right and centre are chopping their long locks into short or shoulder length bobs, which can be worn straight or casual, as well as dressed into a 1940s glamorous look for evenings. Cheryl Cole, Caroline Flack and Kim Kardashian have all opted for this recently. Short, cropped hair will also be popular with amazing ice blonde tones; styles can be brought onto the face or taken back off the forehead creating a more sophisticated look for special occasions. If you are growing out short hair into a modern bob, it is worth considering hair extensions for the sides. This will completely change your look while you are waiting for the hair to grow. Wood Hairdressing are the experts in Marbella, so why not pop in for a free consultation? We can match up your colour, by mixing and combining as many as four different shades to create the perfect colour for your hair, as extensions need to be invisible.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

IT’S ALL ABOUT

Beauty Editor Liza Mayne gives readers a monthly update on all things gorgeous. This month she goes back to basics, turning her attention to creating a stylish, sophisticated sleeked back ponytail.

Mason Pearson

The classic brush - This is the best beauty investment you will ever make. Although this brush is pricey, it will last you for years and years. It smooths the hair with every stroke, making it shine and reducing frizz. Using a Mason Pearson hairbrush is the best way to distribute the natural oils while exfoliating the scalp and stimulating circulation of the hair follicles. It is gentle enough to brush through tangled backcombed hair, but is still great for creating high-volume teasing.

Hair Bungee

This is a clever little alternative to the traditional ponytail hair band that we all know and love. This elastic was developed to help create the perfect ponytail. The Ponytail Bungee Band has two hooks that secure the band in the hair, instead of traditional loops. Putting it simply, you secure one hook in your hair, wrap the bungee cord around your hair until the elastic is taut, and secure the other hook in your hair again. I know it may sound complicated, but it works perfectly every time.

Get The Loo k Golden Globes’ Katie Holmes Low Ponytail Step-by-Step:

Step 1: Apply Organix Moroccan Argan Penatrating Oil to towel dried hair and comb through.

Step 2: Using a large round brush, blow dry hair on high-heat and part it on your desired side. Step 3: Go over the hair with a straight-

Organix Moroccan Argan Oil

I’m always looking for products that make my thick, fluffy hair more manageable without a lot of effort on my part. I want smooth locks without using a hairdryer, straighteners or loads of products. This product is a lifesaver; after washing your hair apply a small amount of the oil into damp hair, comb through and leave either to air dry or style. Leaves hair in shiny waves with hardly any frizz.

ener from root to tip, to create a super sleek look and then brush it through with a Mason Pearson brush.

Step 4: Gather the parted hair low at the nape of the neck, and secured it using a hair bungee. Then wrapped several small pieces of hair around the bungee to hide it, and secured those strands with bobby pins. Step 5:

Finished by spraying a supple amount of Deliplus Brillo Diamante spray.

It’s a quick and simple way to achieve a polished and interesting look in just a few minutes. The look can be created with any type or length of hair and with clean or dirty hair. FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Germaine de Capuccini’s award winning products and treatments can found in the most exclusive salons and spas throughout the world and they are now available at Reflections Hair, Nails & Skincare salon in Marbella.

A

lways one to keep one step ahead in the world of beauty, the team at Reflections has been on the lookout for a skincare brand which not only fits with the salon’s high standards but, most importantly, produces results. After dismissing some of the more well known brands, they finally found a company who not only specialises in anti-ageing but is also actually based in Spain. Having just celebrated its 50th anniversary Germaine de Capuccini, now the preferred brand choice in more than 10,000 spas and salons across 84 countries, has developed some of the most talked about skincare formulations in the world. The successful combination of natural active ingredients with cutting-edge technology has enabled the company to create some of the most influential skincare products and professional spa therapies the beauty industry has ever seen. Their exciting range of advanced treatments and product range includes the likes of diamond infused serums, antiageing facials, full body massages and even an arm firming treatment designed to keep you looking youthful from head to toe. Reflections beauty therapist Cristina Camacho Herrera reveals, “The main reason that I wanted the beauty team to work with Germaine de Capuccini is that the products are of such high quality, yet they manage to keep the prices low. This is not something you see often in the beauty world. I love the fact that it is a local brand, which allows the company to create products which are relevant to our clients. Many brands use retinol in their products which can make your skin photosensitive. Germaine understands that this is impossible for anyone living here in the South of Spain - we simply cannot avoid the sun. Somehow they have worked around this and produced a product line which fights pigmentation yet doesn’t make your skin sensitive to the sun.”

throughout, your facial will provide immediate results and leave your complexion clear, radiant and glowing with natural health and vitality - a facial like no other.” One of the most popular treatments is the O2 – PURE OXYGEN THERAPY. Utilising the benefits of MPC-Defence Complex and Life Cytoxygen, the Oxygen therapy treatment is perfect for those aged 25 and over who are concerned about the first signs of ageing. O2 works in a highly intelligent way to increase cellular activity and allow the skin to absorb more oxygen, leaving it looking and feeling younger looking, firmer, toned and radiant. Now, come on ladies - who out there wouldn’t love to see the back of their bingo wings? The FIRM & TONED ARMS treatment works specifically on the upper arm area. It is rich in Plankton Extract, a powerful ingredient which imitates the effects of resistance physical exercise to improve tone and Organic Silicon to regenerate collagen and elastin fibres. Your treatment commences with an exfoliation of the area before a specialised massage is performed on each arm; finally the arms are enveloped in a sleeve type wrap, a relaxing procedure but one which is highly effective. Clients are then given a set of specific exercises and the Up & Tone firming cream, especially for arms, for use at home.

WHAT AN ENDORSEMENT!

Someone who is very hard to please is Reflections celebrity hair stylist, Jonathan Yeadon, yet even he has fallen in love with the brand. “Simply because you do not know a brand it’s not sufficient to discount it. I am always keen to look at something new. When Cristina, our trusted therapist, suggested Germaine

de Capuccini to me I was more than ready to try it. The range covers all skin types and needs, and is a very skin friendly consistency, meaning that quick absorption is the order of the day. They smell amazing and leave one with a true spa feel. Trust me to adore the most expensive cream in the whole collection – but it works, what can you do? The GNG is amazing because it actually feels like it’s doing something. It reminds me of much much more expensive creams but comes at a fraction of the price.” Well it looks like Germaine de Capuccini has Jonathan’s stamp of approval.

Extraordinary Nutrients FOUND IN THE Most Ordinary Photo

by Sofi

a

on Knutss

I

’ve just returned from a five-day work trip to London, which has become what seems like the mecca of superfoods, juices and places to enjoy healthy dishes and drinks. I love the fact that so many people are currently embracing healthy eating and weird and wonderful ingredients

OF FOODS

This month Bettina, our resident foodie, will surprise readers with the astounding nutritional value of standard vegetables, which are both cheap and easy to find at any supermarket, if used in the right way.

such as macca, spirulina and baobab powders are becoming a normal part of our lives. As much as I love experimenting and using these superfoods, I do think that we need to go back to basics and realise that the true nutritional treasures are hidden in foods right in front of our noses.

Not everyone can afford superfoods or get hold of them so I have taken it upon myself to list my personal favourite items that you can get hold of practically anywhere, which are still packed with a fantastic amount of goodness!

Leeks

Leeks are one of my favourite veggies; when cooked on a low heat for a long period of time they become sticky, sweet and unbelievably tasty. Use the whole leek, greens included, as that is where all the nutrients are hidden. It breaks my heart when I go to markets and the greens are ripped off and thrown away.

Carrot Tops

Yes, can you believe it? Although the roots of carrots are healthy and yummy to eat, most of the nutrients in these lovely root vegetables are in the leaves; highly nutritious, rich in protein, minerals and vitamins, they also contain antiseptic qualities and can be juiced and used as a mouthwash. Carrot tops contain six times the amount of vitamin C found in the root and are a great source of potassium and calcium. Carrot tops are spicy and peppery and great to use in salads and soups.

Leeks contain phytochemicals, which are immune-boosting. These compounds have been credited with everything from boosting immunity to beating cancer and can be found in garlic, onions and shallots too. Studies have shown that leeks also help protect the digestive system from stomach and gastric cancers and consuming a healthy dose of allium veggies could also protect against prostate cancer. Researchers are still uncertain as to why leeks help prevent cancer, but it’s been suggested they could stop the spread of cancer cells, foil carcinogens’ evil plots, and beat up damaging free radicals. These veggies know how to get down to business!

Beet Greens

This is the stuff that is normally cut off from the beetroot and thrown into a bin. A small amount of these leaves serves up nearly five grams of fibre - that’s more than you’ll find in a big bowl of bran flakes. Researchers at the University of Leeds found that risk of cardiovascular disease was significantly lowered for every seven grams of fibre consumed. Try them in stir-fries or in smoothies (replacing spinach) and eat to your heart’s content. Beetroot and beet greens has been honoured throughout history for its nutritious value; according to Wikipedia, ancient Romans used beetroot as a treatment for fevers and constipation. Hippocrates - the father of medicine - advocated the use of beet leaves as binding for wounds. During the Middle Ages beetroot was used as a treatment for a variety of conditions, especially illnesses relating to digestion and the blood.

Nuts & Seeds

Super nuts and seeds offer good fats and protein when you want to take a break from cooked pulses, grains, fish, meats and dairy products. Pound for pound raw nuts are right up there with meat sources when measuring amino acid and protein levels. Tree nuts, in particular, are an amazing source of energy and fuel. Nut trees can live for hundreds of years and supply many, many pounds of food during their lifetime. Nuts and seeds are always best eaten when soaked and activated. This means you get the most out of them, they are easier to digest and their nutrients absorbed better into the body.

THE EMPEROR’S CLUB MERCEDES-MAYBACH S600

86

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the MERCEDES-MAYBACH S600

87

TORQUE TALK

T

he Maybach name returns delivering the ultimate limousine and the ultimate ride.

It should have been this way from the start, and in fact it almost was. When I photographed the Maybach prototype in 1999, the car proudly wore a Mercedes grill and three-pointed star on its bonnet, while its bootlid carried both Mercedes and Maybach script. It was obvious from its sheer physical size and presence that this car was the direct descendant of the mighty Mercedes 600 (W100), the chosen ride of plutocrats, and even The Pope, through the glorious 1970s and 80s.

I was able to confirm the car’s supreme refinement while being chauffeured on a route that covered over all kinds of road surfaces in the Santa Barbara area.

More fool the Mercedes marketing bods who listened to the exhortations of a few would be buyers of their new uberlimousine that the three-pointed star had gone too far down market with the A-Class. These people indicated that they required complete brand differentiation before they would sign on the dotted line. For them, a car solely bearing the family name of Karl Benz’s partner, Wilhelm Maybach, was just what the doctor ordered. For the W140 S-Class-based limousine however, that single act of perceived exclusiveness was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Millions were spent on trying to revive a brand whose lineage had come to an abrupt halt in 1939, and that precious few even vaguely remembered. It was no surprise then that soon after the Maybach’s debut in 2003, it became apparent that listening to those wouldbe customers had been a mistake of epic proportions. And as production wound down a decade later, a very costly and embarrassing one for Mercedes. Meanwhile, under the stewardship of BMW, Rolls-Royce went from strength-to-strength with its new contemporary Phantom. At last innings in 2013, barely 3,000 examples of the Maybach limousine in its 57 and 62 guises had been sold before the plug was unceremoniously pulled, and the MM (Maybach Manufactur) motif once again slipped away quietly into the night. Just a few days after the calendar turned over to welcome the world to 2015, I am being wafted along in the back of a brand new car wearing the Maybach motif on its C-pillars. But this

88

TORQUE TALK time, as with the 1999 prototype, the new limousine confidently wears the Mercedes-Benz grille and threepointed star on its nose. The new Mercedes-Maybach is being presented as a more upmarket version of the S-Class range, which sold 100,000 units in its first full year of production, equivalent to the sales figures of the Audi A8 and BMW 7-Series combined. This makes it the most successful S-Class ever. In terms of model designations, where the standard S-Class is W222, and the LWB version is V222, the MercedesMaybach is designated X222, with the forthcoming Pullman, due to arrive later this year, the Z222. The S-Class wheelbase mix is very much market driven. The 130mm longer V222 is the default model in the USA and China. With a further 200mm added to the wheelbase of the V222 aft of the B-pillars, the new Mercedes-Maybach model is primarily aimed at the US, China, Korea and Russia, with only nine percent of sales expected from European buyers. Fittingly, the revived Maybach name now represents the luxury sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz in the same way that AMG is the high performance subbrand, thus giving potential S-Class customers three distinct flavours of modern luxury to choose from.

However, unlike AMG, which covers the Mercedes range from A-Class to the AMG GT supercar, the Maybach name will only be used with the S-Class line to maintain exclusivity. The bespoke trim choices above and beyond the already well-appointed basic MercedesMaybach specification come under the Designo label. The Mercedes-Maybach is available in 455hp S500 V8 and 530hp S600 V12 guises, the former equipped with the new 9G-Tronic nine-speed gearbox. There will be an S400 V6 version just for the Chinese market to mitigate local luxury taxes. Production starts in February, and the LHD-only 4Matic version of the V8 model, and the armoured Guard version will be available in the summer. Good proportions are always the jumping off point of aesthetic excellence, and the rear quarter restyling for the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class derivative adds an even more regal aura to the most modern and dynamic looking luxury saloon in its class. As Daimler design chief, Gorden Wagener explained, “It is hard to design a car this long so that it does not look ‘stretched.’ We achieved aesthetic balance by extending the rear roofline and keeping it high, using a thicker C-pillar to re-proportion the rear and add privacy for occupants, and incorporating the triangular rear window and 66mm shorter doors.”

These changes successfully compensate for the 200mm wheelbase stretch over the LWB S-Class that takes place aft of the B-pillars. The result, to my eyes at least, is the most handsome and modern looking luxury limousine on sale today. In practical terms, I found that by almost completely missing the rear wheel arch, the new rear doors give the car an even more homogenous look while facilitating easier ingress and egress. Inside, the wheelbase stretch that takes rear knee room from 166 to 325mm, allows both rear seats to be reclined to 43.5 degrees, providing supreme comfort for two. The front passenger seat can still be motored forwards all the way for even more legroom on that side of the car. The finer grade of leather used in the cars sumptuous interior, and the lamb’s wool over-mats in the rear add a final touch of plush. Speaking with Mercedes’ aerodynamics chief, Dr. Teddy Woll, whose team have gone the extra mile in NVH engineering techniques with the chassis and aero-acoustics, I learned that the new MercedesMaybach is the quietest and most comfortable limousine on sale today by a significant margin. The fact that it is also less expensive than its rivals from Bentley and Rolls-Royce is an added bonus.

89

TORQUE TALK

The drag coefficient is unchanged at 0.26, the benchmark for the S500 and S600 models with their larger radiator openings. A lot of attention was paid to panel gaps, door seals and other wind noise generating elements. Additional sound deadening materials were added to further reduce low and high frequency wind and road noise intrusion in the audible 1 to 6 kHz range. This is the area most pertinent to the human voice in terms of speech and music. While the S-Class Coupe is quieter in front than the Saloon, the Maybach is measurably quieter than the V222 in the rear in both subjective and objective terms, with less cabin noise than any rival luxury limousine at the benchmark 200km/h on the autobahn.

90

Another sign of attention to detail shows up in the extra sound deadening material placed in salient areas on the body-in-white to absorb vibrations at ear level when the rear seat passengers are in the reclined position. Thus, I found the level of refinement totally consistent irrespective of the angle of recline I adopted during the test ride. Meanwhile, the latest laminated glass techniques mean that the new Mercedes-Maybach achieves a 10 percent reduction in noise through 3.5mm of glass over the 5.0mm glass of the previous Maybach. The transcendentally musical Burmester Audio system that is such a worthwhile travelling companion in other S-Class models has received a software tweak to compensate for the extra cabin volume.

Extra weight helps to absorb vibrations with sheer mass, and the longer wheelbase, related panels and glass add around 50kg over the kerb weight of the equivalent S500L or S600L. However, by the time you add up the extra equipment you can count on an extra 170kg over each of the base models. Thus, software recalibration was required for the suspension, ABS and ESP systems. I was able to confirm the car’s supreme refinement while being chauffeured on a route that covered all kinds of road surfaces in the Santa Barbara area. As California has been technically bankrupt for years, their roads are hardly better than the UKs, and the way the Mercedes-Maybach prevents external disturbances from reaching its occupants is most impressive.

The engineers went to the extent of commissioning bespoke tyres from Goodyear that incorporate a sound deadening belt in their inner circumference to further draw down road noise

TORQUE TALK

91

TORQUE TALK

The supple but well damped ABC active suspension with Magic Ride Control, standard on the S600 and optional on the Airmatic-equipped V8 model, benefits from the extra wheelbase length. This adds a further sublime component to the ride of a limousine whose rear seat comfort is already the class benchmark. However, the perception of gliding along in virtual silence does not come from a smooth ride alone. The engineers went to the extent of commissioning bespoke tyres from Goodyear that incorporate a sound deadening belt in their inner circumference to further draw down road noise by as much as 10 dB at 100 Hz, and in the critical 250 to 400 Hz range at 60 km/h. This extra sound-deadening belt has a 125 x 25 mm cross-section, adds 300g to each tyre and does not affect the rolling resistance and CO2 output. Tyre sizes are 245/45R19 and 275/40R19

92

or 245/40R20 and 275/35R20, and the winter tyre option uses 245/45R19 rubber all-round. The notable absence of tyre as well as wind noise in almost all conditions vindicates the engineer’s efforts, adding to the sense that the car is simply gliding along in eerie silence as you work, relax or simply watch the outside world go by. Mercedes has even thought out of the box on the chauffeur/VIP interface. Two microphones in the rear view mirror housing pick up the chauffeur’s voice and pipe it through the cars audio system in the rear compartment. This clever system avoids the need for raised voices or head turning, contributing to both road safety and decorum. The control software subtly raises the volume with speed up to 120 km/h, after which it gets no louder. As for the boot space occupied by the optional drinks cooler, a word

with S-Class Development chief, Dr. Hermann-Joseph Storp, revealed that undoing two knurled securing knobs and disconnecting the power cable allows you to quickly remove the bulky power unit when maximum carrying capacity trumps cold champagne. The basic Mercedes-Maybach S500 costs 154,000 euros in Germany, with the S600 pegged at 187,000 euros. However, the long options list means that even an S500 owner might not escape breaking the 200,000 euros threshold in the course of creating a truly bespoke car. That however, is still significantly less than the opening gambit of rivals from Bentley and Rolls-Royce. In strictly empirical terms, even the mighty Phantom cannot quite match the comfort and silence of the new Mercedes-Maybach, but then I would expect no less from the company that invented the motor car. La Herradura

I

t is said that on receiving the news of the destruction of The Great Armada in 1588, Philip II never smiled again. But then, he was not known for his sense of humour, and in October, 1562, when he had been King for only some six years, he had again had cause for grief. And he was not alone. Fernando Moyano, a member of the army in Flanders, produced a “Romance of the loss of the Spanish Armada in La Herradura” in which he wrote:

“No hay hombre que aquello cuente que de lástima no llore…”

(Difficult to translate elegantly, but perhaps “There is no man who counts for anything who does not hurt or cry”)

Fifty three years later, Miguel de Cervantes referred to the tragedy in the second part of Don Quijote. The mighty Turkish Ottoman Empire was on the move. The Balearic Islands had fallen in 1558, and the Spanish coast was under constant threat as a result. Philip II appealed to Pope Paul IV for help, and in 1560 an allied fleet of between fifty and sixty galleys, with a similar number of smaller craft, assembled at Messina in Sicily under the command of the Genoese Giovanni Andrea Doria. It sailed to Malta, where bad weather forced it to remain for two months, whilst 2000 men perished from sickness. On the 10th February the fleet sailed for Tripoli, but a freak storm caused it to make for the island of Djerba, which it overran. The Duke of Medinaceli ordered the construction of a fort, but the invaders were taken by surprise when a Turkish fleet of about eighty-six galleys arrived from Istanbul. The battle was brief. Half the Christian galleys were sunk or captured. Giovanni Andrea Doria escaped, and the remaining soldiers and sailors took refuge in the new fort under the Spanish commander Don Alvaro de Sande. The siege lasted three months, at the end of which Don Alvaro, together with 5000 prisoners, was escorted back to Istanbul. The Turks turned their attention to the Spanish-held possessions in north Africa, which now looked easy prey. Hassan Pasha, the Ottoman governor of Algiers, assembled an army with which he proposed to move against Oran and Mers El Kebir.

94

Philip II ordered a fleet to be assembled in Barcelona to transport 4000 soldiers to reinforce the two threatened enclaves. Trees were brought in from Flanders, oars from Naples, muskets and pikes from Vizcaya. Twenty eight galleys arrived from Genoa. 3,500 soldiers gathered, together with numerous women and children. Don Juan Hurtado de Mendoza y Carrillo, Captain General of the Galleys of Spain, assumed command, sailing from his base in Sardinia where he had been engaged in combatting corsairs. A threatened revolt by Moriscos in Valencia caused the fleet to land there first, before proceeding onwards to Málaga for provisioning. A gentle Levante began to blow, gradually increasing in intensity and causing heavy swells. As a seasoned sailor, raised from childhood in the galleys under his father, Don Bernadino, Don Juan began to get alarmed. Clouds were gathering, and a land breeze (of the type that sunk the Royal George off Portland Bill in 1782) began to blow. Forty miles to the east of Málaga, Don Juan knew from experience that there was a sheltered cove called La Herradura, guarded by Cerro Gordo to the west and the Punta de la Mona to the east. He ordered the fleet to weigh anchor and set sail. The winds blew. From two in the morning until ten the galleys rowed for shelter.

The winds battered them. The Soberana was rammed and taken in tow. Past Nerja fierce rain hampered the rowers. Finally, the winds calmed, and all looked set fair. The fleet anchored. Tropical cyclone development is not common in Spain (although in 2005 just such a development, called Delta, caused serious damage to the Canaries). The Levante in Málaga, which had so alarmed Don Juan, had been caused by a cyclone passing from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean through the Straits of Gibraltar. It now met a warm front, and the result was a massive storm of a meteoric type known as “ShapiroKeyser”. It arrived with such force that there was no time to weigh anchor. The east wind now blew from the southeast. The galleys were hurled against each other. Don Juan, in his beautiful five month old galley, ordered the release of the galley slaves and signalled the other ships to do likewise. He managed to weigh anchor, but was swept onto the rocks. Attempting to jump overboard whilst trying to save the children in his care, he struck his head on a spar and perished with all hands, although four or five of the rowers, unencumbered with armour, weapons, and clothing, managed to reach the shore.

Precise numbers are uncertain, but it is generally accepted that within the space of an hour, twenty three of the twenty seven galleys were destroyed. Miraculously, the Bárbola found herself beached with all hands saved. The Soberana, Mendoza, and San Juan, sheltered at the extreme end of the fleet by the Punta de Mona, managed to turn in the wind and escaped. The number of victims is not known exactly, but it is likely that of the roughly seven thousand souls in the fleet, five thousand perished; many bodies being washed ashore for burial by the inhabitants of La Herradura and Almuñecar. So severe was the storm as it blew inland that the Marquis of Zenete, a leading landowner in the Province of Granada, petitioned the Count of Tendilla, Captain General of the Province, for a reduction in the Farda (local taxes) and help to restore his battered estates in Xeres, Aldeire, Ferreira, Huaneja and Calahorra. His complaints rumbled on over the years, but Tendilla proved himself to be a worthy forerunner of the Hacienda. As a contemporary

ackson Grundy has been trading in the UK for 21 years and has established itself as a market leading estate agent. Managing Director David Jackson has owned a home on the Costa del Sol for over 10 years and, after extensive research, has decided to open an office in Nueva Andalucia. David comments, “The Spanish property market has gone through a huge change during the last 10 years. Property sales in Spain are almost 60 per cent lower than at their peak. Buyers from all over Europe, China and Russia are returning to the market and property prices have now stabilised, with all the signs indicating that the market will now steadily move forward. Spain is now one of the safest places to buy in Europe and offers incredible value for money and quality of life. So why will Jackson Grundy be different from all the other agents on the Coast? Quality staff are paramount to the success of any business and in the UK the company employs around 70 people. Over half of these have worked for Jacksom Grundy for over 10 years, providing continuity and experience for clients. Heading up the Spanish office are Amy Deehan and Paul Smith who, between them, have more than 20 years real estate agency experience at Jackson Grundy. They will be joined by two multi-lingual local staff who have lived on the Coast for many years.

Trust is the key word – whether you are buying or selling - when choosing an agent. Buying a home is a huge financial commitment and it is vital that you appoint an agent who can guide you through the process with honesty and integrity. Many of Jackson Grundy’s clients have used the company time and again, which shows they must be doing something right. Charity plays a big part in the company’s ethos and last year, to celebrate 20 years in business, the staff embarked on numerous charity fundraising events: running marathons, jumping out of aeroplanes and walking on hot coals were just some of the activities undertaken. Their efforts culminated in over £25,000 being raised for two chosen charities – Cynthia Spencer Hospice and Niamh’s Next Step. Here in Spain Jackson

Grundy has already decided to sponsor Last Chance Animal Rescue and will also try to support as many other worthwhile causes as possible. If you are looking to buy or sell on the Costa del Sol then please contact the Jackson Grundy office and they will be delighted to assist you. seekers By Hayley Reed Founder of FOC Design

Summer is nearly here again and, with that, come blue skies and stunning sunshine. Getting ready for another season means thinking about how to enjoy the long, sunny days but without always being directly in the sun. We all enjoy the rays but creating a living space with some protection from the sun is a must. Here FOC Design outlines different shade solutions for your home or social venue.

Biosun’s stunningly contemporary reinvention of the pergola is an impressive solution for both commercial and residential premises. A perfect intermediate solution between a conservatory and an exterior awning, Biossun’s bioclimatic pergola provides unique additional living space, 112

combining technology and comfort. They are electronically controlled and it is also possible to adjust the solar shading automatically according to weather conditions, using rain and wind sensors.

With additional features such as LED colour changing perimeter lighting, heaters and misting systems these pergolas can be customized to your requirements. Available in different colour finishes, Biosun has reinvented the pergola and brought it straight into the 21st century.

Suntech’s retractable roof system provides elegant outdoor covering to allow outdoor areas to be used in any weather conditions. The flexibility of being able to retract the system by a remote controlled motorized system means your terrace can be baked in sunshine or completely shaded. With these sleek and seamless shades, spaces can be given a new lease of life!

MIRROR MIRROR on the wall By Hayley Reed Founder of FOC Design

Traditionally the perfect mirror can tell you if you are the fairest of them all – I tend not to ask, fearing that the answer is one I would rather not hear. Having said that, I am not opposed to a mirror or two – they are a key ingredient to the perfect interior and an essential tool to help avoid those fashion faux pas!

There are many benefits of adding a mirror to a room; a space can immediately feel larger and more expansive, reflecting more natural light and helping to brighten up even the darkest of corners.

The muted coppers and soft bronzes used in these round revelations work well with elegant interiors and have a more practical use with the clear and large mirrored centre; especially good when used over consoles and dressing tables. For a nautical look, the stainless steel porthole style mirror has a slightly more masculine tone.

114

Whatever your style preference, whether it’s floor standing or wall hung, round or rectangle, ornate or minimal, there’s the perfect mirror out there for you. Here, FOC Design highlights some favourites…

HOME COUTURE

The starburst influenced mirror is a clear favourite of FOC’s. Becoming a signature element of many of our designs and available in silver leaf, gold, bronze and black, this sculpture of a mirror is a statement piece for any hallway or reception. Admittedly not the best choice for a make-up session, the design has a timeless quality about it and the mirror has great presence.

This creation works well both in landscape and portrait ratios. Perhaps not the most practical of the collection to see whether your thighs look big in those jeans, but a stunning wall hanging nonetheless.

Understated elegance. This mirror works best in threes – not only reflecting lots more light into a room but, used in unison, decorating a wall adding pattern and glamour.

THE

FOOD OF

LIFE

Reviewed by India Baltran Photos by Julia Roder

e are so lucky in Marbella to have a wide range of excellent restaurants representing cuisines from all around the world. Fancy Szechuan dishes? A breathtaking balti? Maybe some tasty Lebanese mezze? Or how about a traditional Thai red curry? You are guaranteed not to have to travel far to find the best that the globe has to offer. Of course, of all these international players probably the most wellestablished family favourite has to be Italian. Can you honestly think of anyone who doesn’t enjoy any Italian dishes? There really is something for everyone, from gorgeous crispy pizzas to mouthwatering meat platters to vegetarian pasta options. For this reason and many more we were absolutely delighted to learn that there is a new star on the local scene. Cibo (which means ‘food’ in Italian) has a great ambience, which is ideal for the Marbella scene. The best way to describe it is to say that it effortlessly combines the vibe of a relaxed city restaurant with a casual, comfortable atmosphere, which you can be sure will attract everyone, from lunching professionals to families on holiday. We also adored the fabulous terrace, which we could imagine would appeal to diners looking for a touch of romance and those types of populous, multi-generational dinners that happen so often in Spain.

120

just like all truly great Italian restaurants.

We were also impressed by the prices, which make Cibo a prime candidate for more than one visit a week and the open kitchen, designed to appeal to customers who like to see what they will be eating. The décor was also spoton – cool and cosy at the same time,

As an introduction to the simple authenticity of Cibo’s cuisine may we suggest that you consider ordering one of the Sharing Boards as a starter? You can choose from Vegetable, Meat and Fish options but we decided to try the Meat Sharing Board, which consisted of Carpaccio Roast Beef, San Daniele Ham, Compressed Melon, Cibo Steak Tartare, House Cured Duck and Caramelised Shallot Bruschetta. These imaginative starters are a wonderful way of finding out what Cibo is all about (authentic food and top quality ingredients, we say) and you can kickstart your taste-buds while saving yourself for the onslaught of the gorgeous main courses. We cannot resist a good pizza and we knew that the thin crust, stone baked variety on offer here would be bursting with flavour. Words cannot adequately describe the explosions of taste detonated by the Salami di Napoli, Pepperoni and San Daniele Pizza. This was a slice of Italy on a plate and a timely reminder that you just cannot buy a pizza from your local supermarket and expect to have the same experience. The Crab, Lime and Chilli Linguine was especially memorable, an imaginative rethink of an old favourite which was redolent of the Asian flavours which are so popular at the moment. This was a great reminder that Italy’s cuisine owes a great deal to Asian traders, who passed many of their culinary secrets onto

COSTA CUISINE

their Italian counterparts. Hundreds of years ago noodles were reimagined as spaghetti and now we can enjoy more of this Eurasian fusion food. The combination of the pasta with the flavoursome crab meat and lime was proof that you can enjoy hearty Mediterranean food which is also light and refreshing. Oh how we loved the linguine!

Did we say “Italian classic”? How could we leave without testing the house Tiramisu? This was yet another example of a well-worn favourite that benefited from the expert touch of a specialist chef. The presentation was also memorable; the dessert had been embossed with the Cibo logo in coffee, which was admired by the whole party.

Completing our choice of main courses was another true Italian classic. Polpette e Paccheri or, for the uninitiated, pasta tubes with meatballs in a gorgeous tomato sauce, represented everything that truly great Italian cooking stands for. This was the kind of dish that you could imagine looking forward to on the bus when travelling home from work. Forget those pre-packaged ready-meals that we all rely on from time to time; the difference between mass production and this heavenly home-made concoction was immense, as was the intensity of flavour.

Our resident chocoholic was tempted by the Dark Chocolate Salted Caramel Pots with Amaretti Crunch (is there anything more Italian that Amaretti biscuits?), which was declared, “the best dessert ever!” However, overall we decided that the the Limoncello Baked Cheesecake with Mascarpone Ice Cream was even better. Over the years we have sunk more than a few litres of home-made limoncello at various venues up and down the Coast, but never before have we tasted it incorporated it into a fluffy cheesecake.

From now on I have to say that we will be disappointed in any baked cheesecake that doesn’t feature this sunny aperitif. This dessert triumphs by not being overwhelmingly sweet and cloying, so the final spoonful tastes as fresh and good as the first. In other words, we loved it and not a single crumb was left. We had heard plenty of praise from friends who have already become Cibo devotees and now we can see what all the fuss is about. If you want authentic, reasonably priced Italian food in great surroundings, then don’t be the last to find out. Oh, and leave some space for that outstanding cheesecake. Situated in Nueva Andalucía on Avenida Pilar Calvo, Head Chef Ezequiel Castro might have an impressively Hispanic name but has not been remotely shy about nailing his Francophile influences to the mast. If you have any interest at all in fine French cooking, then this is the place for you. Voulez Vous owes its stratospheric Trip Advisor ratings to strict attention to detail; every dish on the menu consists of only the finest ingredients. Much of the produce is local but some of it has been imported from France for that extra touch of authenticity. From outside the restaurant looks welcoming, but little is revealed of this

sensational shrine to gracious living and fine dining until one steps inside. The top notch experience on offer from Voulez Vous’s chefs and waiting staff is enhanced by the bright interior, with enormous windows and mirrors enhancing the available light. The décor is all clean, straight edges with a few carefully chosen pieces included to ensure that the overall ambience is not at all clinical or impersonal. Chef Ezequiel gained his culinary experience in France, the UK, Germany, Ireland and Monaco, so has a truly international focus – although visitors to Voulez Vous will agree that French cooking is clearly his first love. This is a man who

COSTA CUISINE

takes particular pride in his dishes and has taken great pains to ensure that his menu is classically French, although the special (which changes daily) is more likely to display an international influence. Another aspect of Voulez Vous which we loved was its homemade aspect, with even the warm bread and burger buns made and baked on site. Our first choice was a real classic: the Foie Gras with lightly cooked Artichokes, Green Beans and an Artichoke Cream was as French as listening to Charles Aznavour singing La Marseillaise on top of the Eiffel Tower. This was a triumph of a dish, a taste of culinary history with an entirely contemporary twist and served with a flair that was distinctly Gallic. This was an impressive introduction to Chef Castro’s many and varied and talents and we made short work of it, ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’ over every mouthful. This was a Foie Gras to remember! Our next choice was slightly more international: the King Prawns, Scallops and Salmon Roe with Marinated Yuzu on a bed of Fresh Galician Seaweed was closer to the kind of sophisticated seafood dish to which we have grown accustomed in Marbella. The seaweed was a stroke of genius and added a

further taste of the ocean and the yuzu which, we were informed by our very charming and helpful waiter, was a citrus fruit from Japan that looks rather like a grapefruit but tastes more like a floral lime and has been named as a superfood, due to its high level of vitamin C. You can anticipate seeing

a lot more of these delicious and healthy fruits on the menu of our local restaurants in the future, especially since its flavour is such a perfect accompaniment to fish and seafood dishes. The Rabbit with Mushroom Sauce and Mashed Potato sounded like the type of cazador dish that we like to order when we visit one of our favourite local ventas but, again, we were forced to look at this old favourite once more. This was absolutely packed with flavour, the glorious mushroom sauce

being the perfect accompaniment to the rabbit, the mashed potato adding substance to this old favourite. We wanted to test drive a dessert, but realised that it would have to be something light – and our luck was in. French tradition, on which Voulez Vous rests, allowed us to sample the Sabayon, a confection made from egg yolks, sugar and Marsala wine and whipped to a wonderfully feather-light consistency. As in the old saying, many hands made light work of this and the result was an empty, well-scraped dish. Here is a hint that you might like to recall if you happen to catch the SOCIETY Marbella team clogging up a table at your local restaurant: if you happen to hear us saying, “We couldn’t eat another thing!” we are usually lying! What we most enjoyed about our time at Voulez Vous was that the whole experience was so civilised; the food is presented with real finesse and attention to detail and the front of house staff members are friendly and helpful. Overall this was very much a five-star experience and we have already added this little slice of France to our list of favourite local restaurants. Voulezvousmarbella.es Av. LET THE GAMES BEGIN…

T

hese days bars have become more than just a venue for a few drinks or a dance. Instead, many have evolved and now offer so much more, with games ranging from ping pong and pool, to beer pong or bowling - all inside a bar. Launching mid April and taking inspiration from London’s famed games bars, Slainte introduces Marbella’s first outdoor games room, situated on their stunning roof terrace. The Games Terrace, open from 6pm every day, is complete with full sized pool tables, foosball and the party favourite, beer pong, all of which can be enjoyed under the glorious summer sun! Slainte hasn’t cut any corners, boasting the original American solo cups and a proper beer pong table; they mean business when it comes to the game. In addition to the fun, they also serve their full a la carte menú on the roof terrace, guarenteed to help you balance out all the beer. If you are in-itto-win-it be sure to sign up for the Beer Pong Summer Competition in the hopes of taking what we can only describe as the most coveted title of the summer, Beer Pong Puerto Banús Champion!

150

But that’s not all. Situated above Slainte with views out over Puerto Banús, The Games Terrace boasts four plasma TV screens ideal for watching all the best summer sports and a happy hour from 7-9pm is the perfect opportunity to start the night as your mean to go on! Whether you are looking for somewhere to sit back and enjoy the sports in the sun or you are ready to compete for the big title, The Games Terrace is the place to be this summer season. The Games Terrace is also available to hire for stag-dos, corporate events or birthdays. slaintebanus.com

THE WATER OF LIFE

Alistair Imrie, one of the founders of SmallWorld Café, became involved in a fantastic charity project whilst travelling around Asia several months ago. This is a message from him, explaining how your help in the form of a very small donation, will make a huge difference.

“ Last year I went on a trip around Asia

for two months. During this time, I was lucky enough to join Planet Water on one of their missions. Planet Water is run by a friend and neighbour of ours who is often in SmallWorld Café. Their mission is to help those communities throughout Asia that don’t have access to clean running water, something we all here take for granted.

Whilst I was there, I visited a small town of 800 people, installing a water tower with filtration system at the site of the small village school, which instantly changed their lives. It was Christmas come early. Usually, these kids would get ill drinking contaminated well or river water, but that has now changed. Thanks to Planet Water, this particular village and many more are now drinking safe clean water for the very first time. Please have a look at their web site and our micro site where you can donate; planetwater.org Last month World Water day was celebrated. Planet Water embarked on their biggest mission yet, installing 24 water towers in 24 towns within 24 hours. That’s clean water for approximately 24,000 people! SmallWorld Café sponsored one of these water towers so please help and donate a few dollars visiting: https://www.classy.org/fundraise/ team?ftid=47197 I’ve been there and witnessed for myself the great job they do.” SmallWorld Cafe is also hosting another Ladies Ascot day charity lunch, in June, with all proceeds going to Planet Water. Email: alistairimrie@me.com to confirm your attendance at the event.

FINE & COUNTRY GOLD CUP POLO TOURNAMENT Experience the power, passion and grace of polo at one of Great Britain’s greatest sporting and social venues. Fine & Country Marbella cordially invites you and your family as our complimentary guests to the Fine & Country Gold Cup Polo Tournament at the Dallas Burston Polo Club, near Royal Leamington Spa, on Sunday 5th July 2015, 11am-5pm. More than a sporting event, the Fine & Country Gold Cup is a great opportunity

for family and friends to spend quality time together, browsing the shopping village, enjoying delicious food from our food court or a picnic on the lawns whilst watching great polo. Entrance to the event is free of charge, however we will ask for a minimum of £10 per car at the gate. All proceeds will be donated to the Fine & Country Foundation, which combats the causes at the root of homelessness. For more information, please visit: fineandcountry.com/foundation

LAS PEQUEÑAS COSAS A bunch of Marbella locals came together last month for the premiere of ‘Las Pequeñas Cosas’, a film written, directed and filmed by Reynard Productions. Sam, founder of Reynard Productions, has been shooting the short film throughout the last 10 months on location in Ronda. ‘Las Pequeñas Cosas’ blends aspects of both the tragic and the comic to create a unique story, which had viewers captivated until the very last scene. For more information on Reynard Productions and the work they do, visit Reynardproductions.com
