PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Happy August! How are you enjoying the summer so far? It has been a thrilling month with the Coast filling up with happy holidaymakers and some great parties and live events. Don’t forget to take a look at our Who’s In Who’s Out section to find out whether you or your friends have been papped. We have also had some very famous visitors this summer; for instance, who was the famous sportsman seen enjoying the music at the Seal concert and chatting to locals? Could it have been the world’s Number One tennis player, Novak Djokovic? If you did happen to be there and recognise him, then you’re not the only one. Seal, who is apparently a huge fan of the game and had earlier seen the sportsman hitting a few balls around at the tennis courts, picked him out in the crowd and dedicated his hit, ‘Kiss From a Rose’ to him. Talking about celebrity visitors, our Elle McKenzie was very happy to hear that famous movie director Michael Winterbottom has been sighted in Málaga, checking out locations. We were even more delighted when we learned that the reason for his visit was that the third series of the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon vehicle, The Trip, is to be filmed in Spain. If you haven’t seen it you have missed out on some great TV; the programmes revolve around Coogan and Brydon enjoying a gourmet road trip (the first series was based in the North of England, the second in Italy) and enjoying some spectacular scenery, while trying to prove who is the greater wit and impressionist. The series has been a huge critical success and attracted excellent ratings during its first two seasons and there is no doubt that the Spanish tourist industry can only benefit from this kind of exposure. We do, after all, have some superb restaurants. On this subject, have you had dinner at La Sala in the Sky yet? Along with La Sala’s new venture, OAK Garden & Grill, It has proved one of the culinary talking points of the summer so, if you haven’t booked your seats yet, don’t delay. Okay, we acknowledge that dining while suspended 50 metres above Marbella may not suit everyone, but there are obviously enough thrill seekers in the area to have made this a great success. Sure, there’s the novelty aspect, not to mention the great views, but the food is excellent as well. If you’re feeling a bit jaded and that you’ve seen and done it all before then believe us – you haven’t!

This time of year also brings out the inner interior designer in many of us and, with that in mind, those creative people at FOC offer some summer inspiration. How about giving one or more of your rooms a French makeover? It isn’t difficult and doesn’t have to cost a fortune either.

Nothing feels quite as good in the summer, though, as investing in some new linen and towels, which is why we’re very pleased that King of Cotton has recently set up its new store in San Pedro’s well-known Centro La Colonia. The

MAKING of a

MODEL Eileen Soepenberg talks about winning Miss Model Málaga 2016 By Eleanor McKenzie

I

I think every single person has something special that makes them unique, and I hope the judges will like my ‘something special’.

t takes a lot of dedication, hard work and early mornings to become a model. Looking into this world from the outside, it may seem just the opposite; a world of glamour, of being pampered by makeup artists and hairdressers and of having the opportunity to wear the latest designer collections. That is the end result that the public sees, but a model’s daily routine is more like a boot camp for life. The body must be kept in shape, skin taken care of, food intake carefully supervised and there is also the endless packing and unpacking of bags for photo shoots. It is not a career for those who think that all you are required to do is get out of bed and show up somewhere. Instead, it is a highly competitive world where stamina and a desire to succeed are the foundations of success, as local model Eileen Soepenberg explains. Eileen Soepenberg, winner of the 2016 Miss Model Málaga took time out of her busy schedule to meet up with Society magazine and tell us about why she chose modeling as a career, her studies at the Málaga-based model academy founded by Manuel Beltran and her decision to enter this prestigious contest.

Why did you enter Miss & Mister Model Málaga?

I entered the Miss & Mister Model Malaga contest because everybody was talking about it. About eight months before the contest, I started a course at the Manuel Beltran academy for models in Málaga. (Escuela superior de modelos de Manuel Beltran). I had been learning different poses and facial expressions for about six months when they started talking about the contest. I felt confident enough to enter, because I was really enjoying my first six months at the academy and I thought why not give it a try? So that’s when I decided to participate in the contest.

22

What was the journey like to get to the title of Miss Model Málaga?

I applied to the contest and the casting began at the beginning of May. There were a lot of people at the casting, both boys and girls. I looked around and saw a lot of pretty girls, and I knew it would be difficult but that I had to do the best I could. We gave the judges our names, talked a little bit about ourselves, walked in front of the jury and answered some questions. A few days later they revealed the names of the finalists; I was on the list and as you can imagine, I was very happy. During the following week, we had out official photos taken and tried on dresses for the final walk. Then two weeks later, on the 13th of May, I became Miss Model Malaga, alongside Rubén Ruiz who became Mister Model Malaga.

Did you expect to win the contest and how do you feel now that you have won?

I didn’t expect to win at all. I participated because I had never done it before and I thought it would be a great experience. I was confident because I knew my abilities and I knew I would do the best I could to make it to the top three. I thought that even if I didn’t win, it would be a great experience for me and that I would learn more about modeling and meet a lot of new people. So, I took a shot at it! At the point when they were about to reveal the winner, I was very nervous. I hoped it would be me because I felt like I’d done well, but you never know in this kind of contest because all the girls looked great, so it’s tough. But, then they announced that the winner was ‘Number 7, Eileen’. I was so happy when I stepped forward, but I didn’t know what to say, I could only smile. Now that I have actually won the contest I feel so grateful. I am so proud to be representing such a beautiful city, Málaga, in the national final and I will do my best to take Málaga as far as possible.

Celebrity Spotlight

I am so proud to be representing such a beautiful city, Málaga, in the national final and I will do my best to take Málaga as far as possible. How would you describe yourself? I think that I’m a nice, generous girl, who works hard for what she wants. My perspective on life is that nothing is given to you, everything has to be earned.

What is one thing that you would change about yourself?

I would love to be more patient. I’m such an impatient girl. When I want something, I want it immediately, when actually sometimes it is best to wait a bit, think things over and then decide.

What do you like most about modeling?

Actually, I like everything about modeling, but if I have to choose something I would choose photography. I love doing photoshoots, being one on one with the camera and just doing my thing. I would also say that I love doing fashion shows. Normally, before I go on ‘stage’ I’m really nervous, but as soon as I put one foot on the runway, my nerves melt away and I feel like I’m in a different world. It gives me an adrenaline rush, but it also brings out my self-confidence. I think it’s such a beautiful thing when a designer chooses you to show the world their clothes and maybe that is why I

love it so much. Also, I love the fact that every fashion show is different: different clothes, different designers, different atmosphere and, the most important thing for me, every fashion show is more experience.

Who is the most influential person in your life?

There isn’t just one person, it’s my whole family. They are so proud of me winning the contest and they support me in everything I do.

As a little girl, was it your dream to become a model?

I’m not sure that I’d say it really was my dream. I mean, I have always liked being in front of the camera, trying on clothes and things like that. A lot of people always told me I should try modeling because they thought I was so photogenic, but for many years I never really had the courage to actually do it. Now, when they see pictures of me modeling they’ll tell me, ‘See? I told you’, and I laugh. They are right; I never thought I could do it or that I’d love it so much. Now I’m so happy that I made the decision to just try modeling and see if it might work out for me and it did. I think it’s the best decision I have made in the last few years.

What do you do, besides modeling?

Besides modeling, I’m just a normal girl. I work during the week, hang out with friends and I love spending time with family.

The final of Miss & Mister Model Spain 2016 is in October. How will you prepare yourself for the big day?

I’m trying to improve my poses, catwalk style and every other aspect of being a model. I also work out to take care of my body and general health. Now that October is getting closer and closer I can feel the nerves starting, but besides that I’m still enjoying every single step of the journey.

How will you convince the judges that you deserve the title?

I will just do what I’m best at, which is being me. I think every single person has something special that makes them unique, and I hope the judges will like my ‘something special’. It is a competition and I know it will be hard because all the girls are beautiful and probably have the same attitude as me. But if it was easy, everybody would do it. You just have to work for it.

23

Celebrity Spotlight

My perspective on life is that nothing is given to you, everything has to be earned. What is the first thing you will do if you win the contest?

One of the first things I’ll do is probably cry! I think I might also be standing there completely frozen to the spot. I’ll be thinking about the journey, the experiences and lessons I have learned and the people that have always supported me. Most of all, I’ll feel really grateful. I will be so proud if out all of the other provinces, Málaga has the honour of winning the Miss & Mister Model Spain contest.

How do you see yourself 10 years from now?

I hope that 10 years from now I’ll have a lot of experience, learned a lot of stuff and met some great people. But most of all, I hope I will continue being a good person.

What does success mean to you?

Success to me means being able to achieve goals. You’ve just got to climb up the ladder, step by step, and don’t rush. Every time you take one step further, you learn something more. Also, the harder you work for it, the more satisfied and proud you will be when you actually achieve your goals.

What advice would you give other girls who want to participate in a beauty contest?

Just do it! Give it a try. I never thought I would win, but here I am. If you really enjoy modeling and everything that goes with it, I think you should just try it and see if it works out for you. If not, don’t worry about it, you’ll find your way. And, if it does work out for you, maybe you’ll be just like me. It’s better to regret what you have done than what you haven’t. You’ve just got to believe! Thanks Eileen. Your story is an inspiration to other young women who want to follow their dream, even if it isn’t necessarily in modeling. As you say, it is better to try and fail than not to try at all. We’ll all be supporting you in the October contest and we hope that it turns out to be a great day for Málaga, and for you!

It’s better to regret what you have done than what you haven’t. You’ve just got to believe! Photography: David Rodríguez Make up: Chantal García Hair: Carmen Solís Location: MAX BEACH SUN CLUB, Riviera del Sol

Jonathan Franzen’s Purity is a grand story of youthful idealism, extreme fidelity, and murder. The author of The Corrections and Freedom has imagined a world of vividly original characters – Californians and East Germans, good parents and bad parents, journalists and leakers – and he follows their intertwining paths through landscapes as contemporary as the omnipresent Internet and as ancient as the war between the sexes. Purity is the most daring and penetrating book yet by one of the major writers of our time.

It’s a TRIP! By Eleanor McKenzie

Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan are filming their comedy-drama ‘The Trip” in Málaga!

I

t is news of absolute fabulousness, but it is not a revelation about the further adventures of Eddie and Patsy. It is, instead, a very appetising story about Steve and Rob’s upcoming “Trip to Spain.” That is Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, two of the UK’s most popular comedians and chat show hosts, who have already acquired a loyal following for their first two excursions in the world of gastronomy: “The Trip” (featuring northern England) and “The Trip to Italy”. On their third outing, the comic pair, who love to bicker, chat about getting old and exchange impersonations of Michael Caine, are in Spain and Andalucia is the setting for the grand finale. British viewers will be familiar with Rob Brydon as Uncle Bryn in the comedy series “Gavin and Stacey” which paired the unlikely locations of Barry in south Wales with Billericay, Essex. Steve Coogan rose to fame as Alan Partridge, although he recently took a break from comedy to star in the moving film “Philomena” with Dame Judi Dench. Both Coogan and Brydon are rarely out of work, but director Michael Winterbottom, who also directed Coogan in “24 Hour Party People”, the story of Tony Wilson, Factory Records and the ‘Madchester’ music scene, persuaded them to reprise The Trip for a third outing. Interestingly, the show is moving from BBC2 to Sky Atlantic for this new series. Zai Bennett, director of the Sky channel that is also the home of hits such as Game of Thrones and Ray Donovan, explained his reasons for luring the Winterbottom-Coogan-Brydon creation to his channel. He told the British press that “The Trip” is “as close to perfection as you can get in comedy,” and added, “It’s a rare chance to watch comic masters, totally authoring their work with creative freedom. It’s an absolutely perfect fit for Sky Atlantic.” If you haven’t managed to catch the first two “Trip” series, let’s just say that it involved the two comedians playing semi-fictional versions of themselves,

32

Michael Winterbottom was spotted on Muelle Uno in Málaga in May scoping out location shots although, it must be said that it is sometimes hard with these two to discern where fact ends and fiction begins. When Steve Coogan was asked about this Spanish adventure he commented, “Having thought long and hard about yet another sojourn into culinary distractions and middle age, I have reluctantly agreed to Y Viva Espana! Also, I had a hole in my diary, there will be free food and accommodation and Rob Brydon is surprisingly good company. I also like Michael.” And that’s the joy of these pair of comedians; it’s often hard to tell when they’re really joking! The series’ comedic concept is based on an actor (Steve Coogan) receiving an invitation from a magazine to visit several British restaurants and review them. The comic element emerges as he reveals that his girlfriend has left him and he doesn’t want to go on his own. Eventually, he is forced to take his ‘sort of’ friend Rob, who is also a source of eternal aggravation. So, right from the start, the audience knows that there’s going to fun as the duo are bound to get on each other’s nerves. Indeed, they constantly argue and attempt to outdo and humiliate each other with their impersonations of Michael Caine and Sean Connery, for example, especially when there are women in the vicinity. These competitive moments are occasionally broken by friendly and lighthearted improvised banter.

What you really want to know of course is where you might be able to catch some of this being filmed? Well, Michael Winterbottom was spotted on Muelle Uno in Málaga in May scoping out location shots and we do know that they will be at the Parador de Gibralfaro hotel for the last of the six shows. When Michael Winterbottom decided that Spain was the ideal country for the third trip, largely thanks to the attention that Spanish gastronomy has been garnering globally, he also chose Spain’s famous paradors as the central locations where Rob and Steve would stay. Filming starts soon, beginning in Cantabria and then moves south through the Basque country, Rioja, Aragon and Castilla-LaMancha before hitting Andalucia for the finale. They have announced plans to film on the beach at Maro just outside Nerja, and in Comares. Steve and Rob will also visit the Alhambra, and this Andalucian section is scheduled to film in October. When the director, crew and actors roll into Málaga, they will be able to enjoy the magnificent views of the port and the historic city centre from the Gibralfaro, and we’ll be able to enjoy watching them on the small screen in 2017 enjoying a fabulous meal with Málaga as a backdrop. Unless, you actually manage to catch Rob and Steve at work while they’re in Andalucia. You have time to plan your trip to “The Trip” now.

DATING DISASTERS And How To Handle Them

tanya_vegar@hotmail.com

E

veryone, at some point in their life, has had a bad dating experience. A bad date can be caused by a simple mismatch, a lack of chemistry, personality conflicts, questions over the payment of the bill, someone that dominates the conversation and doesn’t let the other person speak; however, it is easy to realise this at the outset and walk away unscathed. There are many mishaps that can happen on a date: random flatulence, spilling your food and having to wear your dinner for the rest of the evening, sneezing over the other person’s food, snorting when laughing, the list is endless. These can all be excused as embarrassing moments caused by nervousness. It is possible to feel overexcited and anxious, leading to a little accident, but these moments pass and shouldn’t stop you getting a second chance! What can be more worrying is fundamental and disconcerting characteristics of personality or behaviour and these should not be overlooked. When going on a date we anticipate a pleasant experience and hope that maybe this time we will meet someone special, with whom we have that all important connection. A lot of effort goes into preparing for a date: the time it takes

34 34

to get ready, the anxiety of wanting everything to be perfect, even mentally planning how it should be. If our expectations are not met it can be a disappointing let down. A terrible dating experience can leave you feeling sensitive, scared, embarrassed, angry and, in the worst case, put off dating altogether. The more you date then the higher the probability of having a disastrous encounter. The saying, ‘if you fall off a horse you have to get straight back on’ applies in this case. Just don’t give up or lose faith if you have had a horrifying experience. Some situations may leave you asking yourself out loud, “Did that really just happen?”

Case History Number 1 Danny invites Rosie out for dinner after meeting her at a coffee house. After their dinner Danny asks Rosie to pay 50 per cent of the bill. Rosie didn’t enjoy the company or conversation and, even though she was invited to the dinner, pays her share. Danny asks Rosie on a second date at the movies, so Rosie agrees thinking maybe a movie will make things easier. Danny buys both tickets and, after the movie, he asks Rosie back to his house. Rosie politely refuses and Danny demands that she pays back the money for the movie ticket. Rosie leaves and Danny starts chasing her to her car yelling abuse at her, followed by a few days

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

of angry text messages. Rosie wasn’t too far down the process and her first impressions were confirmed. The most common cause of failed dating is differing expectations. In some instances you may have thought that the date went really well, so you are feeling happy and positive about seeing the person again, even jumping forward and planning the next six months to a year with this person in your mind, only to find they didn’t feel the same way and they never call you again. Sadly one party sees sparkles and a happy ending suggesting their grand fairytale future of happy ever after with three kids and a dog, but the other party doesn’t want to contemplate anything more than uncommitted sex. The feelings of happiness quickly turn to hurt and the rejection from this can affect your confidence and desire to put yourself out there to meet other people. Rejection can be a difficult emotion to work through, especially with a lack of understanding of what went wrong, or what you could have done to turn the situation around. A respectful person should give you the feedback on why they didn’t have the same feelings as you to give you a sense of closure; however, sometimes it can just come down to bad timing and is something outside your control, happening in the other person’s life. Time will ultimately heal all wounds. Do not be discouraged by failure or a bad experience - learn from it and use it as an opportunity to narrow down what went wrong and how it happened to enhance your next date. At the very least learn to laugh it off, because there is no point feeling down about something that probably didn’t take too much of your time. Bruised egos heal quickly! Dating really becomes a numbers game with luck and probability. If you keep the momentum going, along the way you are bound to hit a little speed bump every now and then but, at the very least, you are bound to have a story to share with your friends. In a situation where you are meeting someone for the first time, either on a blind date or via text messages after viewing an online profile, if the person doesn’t look or act the way that you were expecting, then you are not obliged to stay. If someone has met you under false pretences, editing their photos on a dating website or giving you information that isn’t correct then they are at fault for not telling the truth and you do not have to continue the date. In this situation, it is always best to be polite but honest

about why you are leaving. If there is just no chemistry, even for friendship and you are having a bad time, then you should find a reason to leave, as this is a better option than both of you wasting time. In brief, the best way to avoid bad dating experiences is to communicate. It is very important to take the time to get to know someone before meeting them for the first time. The best way to do this is by having an actual conversation with the person rather than creating a trail of messages. Much meaning and important detail can be lost through text messaging. It is important to ask the right questions to determine compatibility between the two of you. Do you have interests in common, similar goals and beliefs, are you on the same wavelength and does the other person have a sense of humour? Only by having an initial talk can you gauge the ease of the conversation and the tone of how your first meeting will be. A situation such as the following could have been avoided if there had been any level of communication and excitement hadn’t overwhelmed someone’s better judgement.

Case History Number 2 Rita meets Jay on the street and smiles nicely. Jay thinks it’s his lucky day - this beautiful girl picked him up and is interested in him. Rita suggests meeting for dinner and Jay happily agrees. Rita selects a restaurant and Jay meets her there. Rita orders a bottle of Dom Perignon and a lobster. Jay is panicking - this is out of his budget. So he excuses himself to go to the restroom and jumps out the bathroom window. He runs home so fast he is dripping with sweat. He realized he was being set up by Rita. Jay doesn’t leave his house for three days, worried that someone from the restaurant is waiting to take the money from him. Lesson learned, won’t make that mistake again! Sometimes things are just not destined to work, as there are other factors that might cause conflict between the two of you. Maybe you have different expectations of how the other person should think or behave and your date fails to match your relationship values or priorities. If you try to turn this into more than a one-off date this can lead to more hurt, as you will have invested time and emotion. Maybe you had hoped that, in time, the situation would change, but it is better to wise up from the outset and avoid long-term disappointment.

Case History Number 3 Robert arranges to meet Linda for dinner. He messages her several times to tell her he’s on the way, but has been held up. After two hours of waiting, Linda leaves the restaurant, sad that Robert didn’t turn up. Several hours later Robert turns up outside her house, waking the neighbours by yelling to Linda to let him in. Linda wakes the next morning to numerous messages from Robert saying that she should have been waiting to let him in. Being an optimist, Linda decides to give Robert another chance. Some weeks Linda requires medical treatment and Robert forgets - or didn’t bother - to pick her up from the hospital. Linda needs to realise that the situation is not going to change for the better and walk away. To avoid bad experiences, always look for signals and if you see any red flags then run for the hills, early in the process! For example, on a date if a male counts the calories on your plate or asks to view a picture of your mother, you should see red flags waving. This will surely lead to a troublesome situation further down the road. It is important to understand that people do not easily change, even if you are normally dedicated to helping and have a ton of patience. Temporary improvements can occur early in the relationship, however you need to accept the person you first meet because the habits of years of thoughtless, rude or just plain bad behaviour usually come creeping back. History is a good predictor of the future; always listen to your instinct, learn from your mistakes and be open to trying out new experiences. Chances are you will have fun along the way. The more you try, the easier it will become to develop a rigorous screening process and stop wasting your time on the dating carousel. Initially it can be good practice to meet lots of different people, thereby boosting your confidence and calming your nerves. Throughout the process you will learn to become more vigilant and not waste your time on incompatible dates. Remember the saying that you need to kiss many frogs to find your prince or princess! If you would like to talk about finding a way to increase your confidence in these situations please contact me.

any benefits accrue from including cardio exercises in your weekly routine. It will help you improve your health, aesthetics, and body composition. You will improve the efficiency of your heart and lungs, burn fat and your body will gain definition. This exercise plan targets your whole body. To achieve the fastest results possible you should do multi-joint, multimuscle group exercises. This will help you achieve your goals in a shorter timeframe. You can test if your cardio fitness is improving by monitoring how many repetitions you are able to do in 30 seconds. You should aim to do at least one extra repetition each workout to make sure you are pushing your body and moving forward. There are three different workouts to cater for all levels. Before starting this programme you should make sure you have no injuries. If you are finding the workout too hard then you can reduce the time frame of each exercise and reduce the range of motion.

The more muscles that are being worked, the more difficult the exercise. The most common mistake that people make with their cardio training is a lack of consistency. You should aim to build a base of cardiovascular health before you try an event like a marathon, which could lead to an injury if you are not adequately prepared. You can make sure you are putting in the right intensity by manipulating the variables of sets, reps and recovery. If you are improving the efficiency of your heart and lungs then your recovery will be better. You will also be able to do more sets and more reps, which will lead to your performance improving each workout. I would advise that you do the cardio workout every other day. If you have a rest day between sessions then you will have more energy for your workout, which will enable you to burn more calories.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

WORKOUT

LEVEL 1

LEVEL 3

The workout is simple and effective, consisting of three 30 minute sessions per week. Do each exercise for 30 seconds. You will do seven sets of each cardio circuit and have a one minute rest in-between each set. Start with a two minute warm up to raise your body temperature and ease in your joints and tendons. This will leave you with two minutes at the end of your workout to stretch to reduce the risk of injury and improve flexibility. Your warm up will be jogging on the spot at a speed which is specific to your level.

* Jog on the spot.

* Sprint on the spot.

*High knees.

* Kneeling step ups - start with both knees on the floor and then drive up through your heels to a standing position. Do this for 15 seconds for each leg.

FOUR WEEK PLAN

*Jogging kickbacks.

* Burpee press up.

LEVEL 2

* Mountain climber twist - knee to opposite elbow.

Each week you will do the same exercises but you should aim for more repetitions and have a shorter recovery in between each set. You can do the same exercise routine for four to six weeks before your body adapts and you need a new stimulus. You should use a stopwatch to time your rest periods to make sure they are sufficient. For example, in week one you rest for the full minute in between each set and then in week two you should reduce your rest period to 50 seconds. You could continue to reduce your rest period by 10 seconds each week, which would enable you to complete more repetitions and burn more calories.

*Press up on your knees. *Partial squats - only squat a quarter of the way down. This will help you tone your quadricep muscles. *Glute kickbacks - from a kneeling press up position keep one leg at a 90 degree angle and kick back to tone your glutes.

* Tuck jumps - jump up with both knees in the air at the same time. This exercise is explosive and effective at burning fat. * Jumping squats.

* Run on the spot. * Reverse lunge high knee - a reverse lunge is a hip dominant movement. This will tone your glutes, hamstrings and thighs. * Mountain climber. * Squats. * Burpee - this is a great full body calorie burner. * Plank.

To achieve the fastest results possible you should do multi-joint, multi-muscle group exercises

At Last, A Technique That Waves Goodbye to

F

UE hair transplant surgery has become very popular around the world, especially over the past five years. It seems that every time you open your web browser, buy a magazine, or pick up a copy of your local newspaper you will see an advertisement for hair transplant surgery at discount prices. If you are losing your hair, these advertisements can be very tempting. But what do you get for your hard earned money at discount hair transplant clinics? A lot of questions, is the answer to that. When dealing with discount hair transplant clinics you don’t know who is doing the surgery. Maybe a doctor’s name is associated with the clinic – maybe it isn’t, but the people that are doing your surgery are usually technicians with no formal medical training. Many only have secondary school diplomas and are working part time to help with bills. In any other field of cosmetic surgery, doctors perform the entire surgery with assistance from technicians only. Medikemos Hair Restoration is different.

At this clinic, technicians are not left in charge of performing your hair transplant surgery. Medikemos Hair Restoration is founded and supervised by Dr. Emorane Lupanzula, who will be responsible for your surgery from beginning to end ,

with assistance only from technicians. This is what has led Dr. Lupanzula to be recognized as one of the most consistently excellent hair restoration surgeons in the world; he does not take short-cuts. Dr. Lupanzula received his medical degree as a doctor of medicine, surgery and obstetrics from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, specialising in acute and emergency medicine. He eventually went on to Université Claude Bernard de Lyon where he obtained a diploma as a specialist in Hair Transplantation and Treatment of Alopecia. Dr. Lupanzula has been to almost every conference and FUE Workshop since 2007, where he closely examined the techniques of dozens of the leading FUSS and FUE surgeons in the world.

“When the hair is safely removed, it will have the best chance for survival and will eventually grow into strong and healthy new hair.” Dr. Lupanzula has taken components of various techniques from these doctors and clinics from around the world and adapted and modified them to suit his own unique approach to surgical hair restoration. This approach has allowed Dr. Lupanzula to create some truly excellent results for every kind of hair loss sufferer. FUE hair restoration surgery should be performed with expertise that can only come from years of experience.

Dr. Lupanzula started Medikemos Hair Restoration in 2010 and designed the clinic to be state-of-the-art without losing the warm and welcoming ambience, which is vitally important to his patients.

Dr. Lupanzula wants to ensure that clients feel relaxed, which is why he designed the first ever ‘comfort room’ into the Medikemos clinic; nothing like this will be found in any other hair restoration clinic. This room is a quiet space for patients to go and relax during breaks or before they begin their procedure. This is the unofficial theme of the clinic and everyone at Medikemos Hair Restoration strives to ensure that patients feel welcome.

If you or someone you know is considering hair restoration, it is wise to consider what you want and expect, so it is important for a clinic to gain your trust.

FUE hair transplant surgery requires the removal of each and every hair with extreme care and skill in order to ensure complete survival once they are transplanted to the recipient zone. With technician based clinics you can see additional shortcuts being taken through the use of motorised tools to transplant this hair which only serves to speed the process. Dr. Lupanzula, however

uses a hand held manual system that allows him to detect subtle differences in the hair shaft to ensure 100 per cent safety of the hair. When the hair is safely removed,

it will have the best chance for survival and will eventually grow into strong and healthy new hair. Dr. Lupanzula performs the entire removal process with his own two hands; you have total dedication from one of the most respected hair restoration doctors in the world.

Doctor-only FUE extractions, minimal technician assistance, a reliable and consistent track record of excellence and a warm and inviting environment for maximum patient comfort should be top of the agenda. This is the Medikemos way and if you agree that these factors are important to you, we will be happy to welcome your inquiry for a no-obligation online consultation. Also, you can meet with Dr. Lupanzula at the Medikemos clinic or during one of his frequent journeys to Spain. Regardless of your choice, you will receive a thorough consultation which should provide you with the necessary information and education to enable you to make the right decision. At Medikemos, we believe that an informed and educated patient is a happy patient. We look forward to hearing from you! Dr. Lupanzula is the international leader in hair transplant and he will be at HC Marbella International Hospital from September 11th to 17th. Helmut Casasolas + 34 600 39 24 51 marbellahighcare.com

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mind-blowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.

This month Jonathan answers those who try to tarnish Reflections’ reputation, dishes the dirt on the Royals and gives a little insight into the unique characters who make up Reflections’ varied clientele. COLOURFUL CLIENTELE Reflections is repeatedly accused by certain individuals of being oldfashioned, having a predominantly elderly clientele or being ‘middleaged’ (I actually find this one to be the most insulting). This is a total misconception as our clients range from 18-90 and we cater for every age group and demographic. The diversity of Reflections’ clientele can be quite challenging, not only for

48

On Style the stylists but also for our receptionists, especially when you have both ends of the spectrum in at the same time. It’s like oil and water - you just can’t mix them. I like to think of it as wearing different hats throughout the day and I have become an expert at modifying my behaviour to suit the client. I am like a bloody chameleon, come to think of it. Any day you can walk into the salon and it will be filled with a mixture of Russian socialites, retired ex-pats, metrosexuals, models, journalists, billionaires, fashionistas, yummy mummies and their little ones, real estate tycoons, business women, media moguls, ladies that lunch, fashion designers and even landed gentry.

ROYAL CONNECTIONS We have Lady Roston, who has connections with our own Royal family and, depending on her mood, will allow me to dip rather than give her the full customary bow that etiquette demands, which really does save my knees and back. It shows how far we have come with the Royal family integrating into society. Playing the secrecy card I wouldn’t be able to divulge the day-to-day goings on of the Royals, but it couldn’t hurt to let it slip that the Queen is still having her wicked way with Prince Philip, could it? As 2016 saw our Majesty celebrate her 90th birthday, one of my other ladies will be sharing the same milestone and would you believe it if I told you

norm here to have a client call up and ask reception please not to move their appointment as they are going to be heading straight to or from the airport. Now that is dedication for you!

that she still continues to have her hair styled every week, without fail? In fact, she will happily admit that she would rather skip a doctor’s appointment before she missed getting her colour done. Even after being my client for nearly 15 years and seeing me religiously every Saturday afternoon, we have yet to be lost for a topic of conversation. At the other end of the scale I have the renowned ‘Death Star.’ The story behind her nickname needs a column all of its own. She was sent to me primarily as a client and then became a fabulous friend, purely and simply to make sure my feet were always on the ground and most importantly to make me laugh until my stomach hurts. Many of my closest friends actually started off on a professional level. I seem to attract people with strong personalities, possibly because I am the only one that can handle them. My clients travel to see me from all over the world, and even book their flights round appointments. It’s the

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS? I often think that I have been blessed with my amazing clientele but every now and then, after a particularly trying day, I sit back on my terrace, down a glass of wine or two and wonder if I have, in fact, been cursed. What horrendous things must I have done in my past life to deserve the clients I got lumbered with that day? I dread to think. With such a wide range of personalities the topic of conversations can vary and are usually filled with content that would make the Pope’s head explode. However, it’s not easy to have a personal conversation in the salon. Just as you are getting to the juicy details, Nadar, who is stationed next to me, will lean in and say, “Would you remind repeating the last part as I couldn’t hear it over the hairdryer?” I wish he would just get on with his own work - in fact he should focus on his own complex love life rather than everyone else’s. There’s a thought; maybe we could delve into that mess in the next column? Gerry is better behaved and appears to not be listening to my conversations, however 24 hours later he casually ask, “So Mrs. X is having marriage troubles again?” Sandwiched between those two is like having Interpol after you.

A rare occasion for two reasons. Firstly, Gerry and I are on a break. Secondly, Gerry is actually smiling.

My professionalism - and also because I love to get one over on them means that I will never reveal anything that my clients share with me. Oh, the secrets I will be taking to my grave! Believe me, some of them could bring a government down. Talking about Gerry, now here is a man who is the polar opposite of me. He gives a new meaning to the term reserved. If it wasn’t for the fact his hands were moving, people would think he was in a coma. I tell him on a daily basis that it’s a good job that he’s a fantastic hairdresser as they sure aren’t coming back for his personality! Gerry is a prime example of how ‘old-fashioned’ Reflections apparently is. His column is adorned with the names of supremely fashion conscious men; you know, the type of metrosexuals who you would expect to see frequenting one of the new trendy barbers. It seems that style lies hidden beneath that austere persona. Who knew?

“The cultural richness and the opening up of Cuba to the world have turned it into a source of inspiration.” - Chanel 56

The world is finally opening up to Cuba as the one-time pariah has been embraced by its former foes and everyone is in love with the sights and sounds of Havana. Now, the many layers of Cuba’s unique and captivating history, where the sounds of rumba and salsa complement the vividly-coloured murals, are a source of inspiration for the world’s leading fashion designers.

CUBAN FASHION TODAY Valentino looked to Cuba when searching for a cultural theme to inspire the label’s Resort 2017 collection, as did Chanel when its models walked down the open-air catwalk on the Prado promenade in Havana, which provided one of the most extreme demonstrations to date of Cuba’s hot new status on the international art and cultural scene since the declaration of detente with the United States. Birds of paradise, vibrant colour palettes of bright green, turquoise and coral orange, printed skirts and tropical motifs, such as hibiscus flowers, are featured in the Cuba-inspired collections, as well as parrots and butterflies - species closely associated with both Valentino and Cuba.

CUBAN FASHION OVER TIME For years, with its cabarets and casinos frequented by US film stars and gangsters, Cuba had a thriving fashion scene influenced by the pre-revolutionary Art Deco elegance that translated into sequined statement pieces, refined Panama hats and premium handmade cigars.

However, the Communist principles that ruled in Cuba after Fidel Castro won power in the 1959 revolution insisted on equality, even in clothing. Foreign brands were not available and Cubans had to wear imported secondhand clothes from State-run stores. The authorities called it “recycled clothing”, but ordinary Cubans referred to their trips to these official outlets as “rag-shopping”. Cuba entered a crisis after the Soviet Union fell in 1991, as it had financially supported Cuba’s Communist government, and the end of the Soviet era encouraged a rebirth in Cuban fashion. Such an historic change, ocurring in a country which had been officially dedicated to social equality and the rejection of material wealth, has become the inspiring factor in the 2017 collections by Chanel, Proenza Schouler, Stella McCartney, and important magazine editorials.

Did you know

Cuba is the most populated country in the Caribbean, with more than 11 million residents. Fidel Castro erected a statue of John Lennon from The Beatles in 2000. Castro admired Lennon and believed he was a true music revolutionary. Cubans don’t typically write their recipes down. Instead, they are passed down from generation to generation through stories and shared experiences. Cuba has the highest doctor to patient ratio in the world. There are so many doctors in Cuba, that doctors are often sent abroad to countries with a great need of medical professionals. Dance is very important in Cuba, the birthplace of classic dance styles like the Bolero, Mambo and Cha Cha. Cuba has a 99.8% literacy rate, which is one of the highest in the world. The only cars that Cuban citizens can own legally are cars created and bought before 1959. After this year, the Cuban government seized all of the cars, and owns them all to this day. Most of the pre-1959 cars in the country are from the United States.

A SUMMER OF LOVE AT LA SUITE We attended…

The sensational arrival of Ibiza’s famous Flower Hippy Chic Power Party to La Suite in Marbella. This Ibiza institution has been attracting partygoers to the White Island for over 20 years and now Marbellís don’t have to leave town to have the same fun.

We donned…

Our hippy chic gear and partied down to the happy hippy tunes of the 60s and 70s spun by legendary ‘Flower Power’ DJ Mariano Somoza that kept us dancing into the early hours.

We admired…

The effort that all the guests had put into this 60s and 70s revival – for some guests, it was an evening of discovering what the era was all about, and for those who lived through it first time round it was an evening of reliving great memories.

A big thanks to…

The team at the Puente Romano and La Suite for bringing is this awesome party to Marbella – we loved going to Marbella with flowers in out hair! And we can’t wait for the opportunity to go Flower Power again on 10th August!

The launch party for BASS Houses, Marbella’s newest and most Tomorrow’s Houses…Today!

We attended…

The launch party for BASS Houses, Marbella’s newest and most forward-thinking firm of architects and designers that is based on completely ecological construction solutions.

We were inspired by…

The discussion about sustainable architecture for Marbella and the Costa del Sol between the experts guests from real estate, tourism, finance and legal sectors, all of whom made us think more deeply about the long term reasons for encouraging a more ecological approach to residential and public properties.

We enjoyed…

Exploring BASS House’s projects and learning about its collaboration with Málaga University, especially in the field of domotic systems for the home. It was heartening to see representatives of local commerce and education working together for the good of the region and its future.

Congratulations and thanks to…

Cristina Le Peuch Gutiérrez and the team at BASS Houses for such an interesting and informative event. You are changing the face of residences on the Costa del Sol!

MARBELLA HOSTS ARGENTINA We attended…

The recent opening of Origen, the latest restaurant from the fabulous Argentine family who brought us Hacienda Patagónica in Marbella. Based on its reputation we couldn’t wait to discover Origen and discover what they’ve come up with this time.

We adored…

The wonderful family atmosphere at Origen and we were not the only guests who remarked on the fact that level of comfort and welcome that you feel when you’re in your own home. Kids, families and friends all mingled and the owners greeted everyone like a long lost cousin.

We loved…

The Origen menu and concept, which is quite different to H.Patagonica’s more ‘tapas’ style approach. Meat is at the core of this menu and it is a steak lover’s paradise in an informal ambience with interesting polo memorabilia decorating the walls.

Congratulations and a big thanks to…

The whole team at Origen for bringing another great gastronomic experience to the coast – it’s the next best thing to being in Buenos Aires!

THE ART OF THE NEW MENU We attended…

The amazing launch party at Le Discret for its new menu. Marbella’s leading bistro added even more sophisticated flavour to the evening by presenting an exhibition of works by Alejandro Hermann, one of Marbella’s leading artists.

We feasted on…

The “Real French Food” that is this bistro’s hallmark and was offered to guests so generously at the event, along with some excellent wines – as you would expect from a French restaurant.

We delighted in…

Exploring the new menu and discussing whether to have the French Onion Soup or the Mussels in Garlic Butter, the Boeuf Bourguignon or the Sole Meuniere from the fabulous selection of French classics.

Congratulations and thanks to…

Philippe and Vanessa, the chef and entire team for a wonderful party. We wish you every success with your new menu – it is perfect for Marbella’s ‘bon vivants’.

We were inspired by… This year’s collection of international fashion designers who turned up with stunning models to ‘walk’ their designs on the catwalk. The DJ sets brought the show to life and the support from so many big brands is an indication of just how important this event is.

We were excited by… The New Designer Competition for local designers, which was won by bank cashier Gail Howard, and the local designer shows by Gabriella Sardena and Poonam Rupani.

Congratulations and thanks to… Team Runway for putting on yet another evening of fashion, music and providing a showcase for local designers. We’re looking forward to 2017.

The new Audi A5 Coupe has style, panache and performance

104

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the AUDI S5 COUPE

105

TORQUE TALK

W

hen the A5 was launched in 2007, Audi had been without a four-seat Coupe in their range for a whole decade. As the TT had made it into production with little change from its concept car, many thought that the Nuvolari quattro concept that stunned the crowds at the 2003 Geneva Show was destined to inspire the new A5.

emphasise the cars width. These sit under a sleeker bonnet that sets the stage for the curvier, more sensuous shoulder line. At the rear, the bootlid with built in spoiler lip and thinner LED lights also accentuate the cars wider, more purposeful stance. The overall effect is a much more dynamic design that manages to maintain a strong visual relationship to its predecessor.

However, the Nuvolari’s futuristic lines did not suit the packaging of the A4 platform that the designers and engineers had to work with, so the A5 Coupe was launched in somewhat more sober clothing. And as Audi told us at the time, in market positioning terms their handsome new Coupe was aimed at an older, more sophisticated audience, leaving its smaller, more flamboyant TT sister to appeal to the younger crowd.

The new car is 47mm longer overall on a 13mm longer wheelbase. It is also 8.0mm narrower and 1.0 mm lower than before. Boot volume is increased by 10 litres to a best in class 465 litres. Load versatility is further enhanced by the folding rear seat back featuring a 40-20-40 split operated by levers in the boot. Despite this increase in size, Audi have managed to pare a significant 60kg off the kerb weight, which in the case of the flagship S5, drops to 1,690 kg (EU Measure with driver). Wind tunnel work has also significantly improved the cars aerodynamics and the 0.296 Cd of the first generation A5 has been slashed to an impressive 0.25, giving it another best in class number.

“ Taking its basic design cues from the new A4 saloon, the cabin of the A5 Coupe is modern, ergonomically excellent, and beautifully built in the usual Audi way. ”

The first generation A5 was in production for nearly nine years, an eternity in an industry where major model changes normally take place in sevenyear cycles. In the intervening years, BMW split their range numerically, the 3-Series Coupe becoming the 4-Series Coupe, and it was no surprise to see this car grow slightly in size and stature to meet its A5 and Mercedes E-Class Coupe rivals head-on.

As you read this, the second generation A5 Coupe is finally here, and goes on sale in Europe in the fourth quarter of this year. However, rather than pioneering the platform for the new A4 this time round, the new Coupe arrives after its A4 (B9) saloon and estate sisters, whose second generation MLB (Modular Longitudinal) Evo platform it shares. At a glance the strong family resemblance of the new Audi A5 Coupe to its predecessor might make it hard for non-car enthusiasts to tell at a glance between what is an evolutionary rather than revolutionary step for Audi’s seminal mid-range Coupe. Starting at the front, the revised nose features a shallower, wider grille and narrower, longer headlamps that

106

Taking its basic design cues from the new A4 saloon, the cabin of the A5 Coupe is modern, ergonomically excellent, and beautifully built in the usual Audi way. The tape measure shows a 17mm increase in cabin length with more knee, shoulder and headroom than before. The longer doors allow the basic architectural elements seen in the fourdoor A4 to be developed in an even more stylish way, with closer resemblance to the forms seen in the interior design renderings. The current Audi Virtual Cockpit, featuring a 12.3-inch TFT screen with a 1,440 x 540 pixel resolution, is once again the focus of the infotainment package.

The second generation A5 Coupe is finally here, and goes on sale in Europe in the fourth quarter of this year.

The expected driver assistant systems such as Internet connectivity can be called up on the MMI screen on the dash, which features an 8.3-inch monitor above the centre console. At launch, the new A5 Coupe range offers variants of a 2.0 litre four and 3.0 litre V6 engine in its TFSI petrol and TDI diesel ranges. Apart from the standalone 354hp turbocharged 3.0 litre V6 that powers the sporty S5, variants of these engines offer power outputs ranging from 190 to 286hp. Optimised for efficiency, these new engines are claimed to show an average 17-percent greater output, and up to 22-percent improved fuel efficiency compared to their predecessors. I first tested the 2.0TDI version in front-wheel-drive form, a popular choice in some European markets. I am not a fan of front-wheel-drive cars with powerful engines and fat torque curves since excessive weight transfer and torque steer are usually the unpleasant side effects. In this case however, the front-wheel-drive chassis of the non-quattro Coupe felt nicely composed with a serene gait in normal driving.

109

TORQUE TALK

“While the new motor has more horses than before, it is the beefier torque curve, reduced weight, and the new gearbox that give this car its real snap. Thus, blasting between bends on a mountain road is now even more of a pleasure.”

An interesting statistic that underlines the worth of the sportiest models in the A5 range is the fact that in 2015, one in every four Coupes sold was either an S5 or RS5. Thus, Audi has put a lot of effort into further boosting the appeal of their performance variants.

Gerhard Frölich, Head of Powertrain Development, described how the new turbocharger arrangement, the first ever engine with a single turbo nestled in the included angle of the V6, makes for greater efficiency, faster warm up for lower emissions, and faster throttle response. “This is a totally new engine with around 800 new parts, and weighs 14kg less than the old supercharged motor,” he said. “The four-valves-percylinder design features combustion chambers with the spark plug and fuel injector nozzle in the centre for optimum swirl effect and combustion.” As before, variable valve timing is used on the intake camshafts only. The direct injectors have a pressure of 250 bar, and boost pressure for the single Borg Warner turbocharger with integrated manifold is set at 1.3 bar, with no over-boost facility. With 354hp delivered between 5,400 and 6,400rpm, and 500Nm of torque peaking from 1,370 to 4,500rpm the output of new turbocharged 2,995cc V6 is slightly ahead of the 333hp from 5,500 to 7,000rpm, and 466Nm of torque from 2,900 to 5,300rpm of the outgoing 2,998cc supercharged V6. In a deja vu moment, its headline horsepower count echoes that of the two generations old 354hp naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 motor, whose 440Nm of torque trailed behind that of the supercharged 3.0 litre V6 motor that replaced it. On the road the new turbocharged V6 works as advertised, and is smooth and punchy with pretty much instantaneous power delivery on demand. Its deep, sonorous multi-cylinder soundtrack that builds with revs is reminiscent of a vintage warplane, making it a pleasure to wind down the window and give it full throttle when you are in a tunnel. While the new motor has more horses than before, it is the beefier torque curve, reduced weight, and the new gearbox that give this car its real snap. Thus, blasting between bends on a mountain road is now even more of a pleasure.

TORQUE TALK

Taking just 4.7 sec to cover the benchmark 0-100km/h sprint, the new S5 Coupe is knocking in the door of the old 450hp 4.2 litre V8-powered RS5, which is barely 0.1 sec faster. Credit for this goes to beefier torque curve of the new turbocharged V6 motor, the standard fit eight-speed Tiptronic automatic, and lower kerb weight. The new S5 feels more grown, up, more cultured and more mature. Able to cover big distances in comfort and refinement, it is suave, comfortable and rapid, and a genuine grand touring car in every sense of the word. The counterpoint is the grip and secure handling the standard quattro four-

112

wheel-drive system endows it with in all weather conditions. When equipped with the optional Sport Differential that can send most of the engine power to the rear wheels, the S5 turns into bends even more eagerly, and is devastatingly quick down a twisty cross-country road.

However, this towering competence also makes the S5 Coupe feel a bit detached, and it impresses more by what it does rather than how it does it. This is not a car that engages at a level where you want to turn around at the end of a twisty road and do it all again.

The new speed sensitive electromechanical power steering feels good, with better weighing and feedback than the system used on the current A6 range.

Rather, the S5 is a practical luxury GT designed to cover big distances in a stress free manner, and sooth its occupants during their daily commute. In an age where middle class prestige cars are all becoming almost as refined as the luxury cars in the class above such detachment is inevitable. Just know that the S5 does it all with a great deal of style.

Audi also offers an optional dynamic steering set-up that alters its ratio according to road speed and steering angle.

and experience in investigating patent and copyright infringements, licensing issues and discovering counterfeit or stolen products across a wide range of industries.

How do you discover where counterfeit goods are being sold? Conflict director Mike LaCorte explains that there are a number of steps to the process. “First we identify where the potential counterfeit goods are being sold through desktop work and enquiries. Once we have identified the location we can send out field agents to make test purchases and covertly record them with video and audio. The item can then be sent off to the manufacturer where it is tested and verified as to whether it is fake.” Once fake goods have been discovered, it’s up to the manufacturer to decide on the best course of

action. Sometimes sending a ‘cease and desist’ letter can be enough to deter someone continuing to pass on counterfeit goods. However, in more extreme cases, companies may decide to take legal action in order to be compensated by those selling counterfeit goods as the real thing. Therefore, it is important that all evidence gathered is legally admissible in court so all investigations are monitored by both the client and legal advisors who provide expert assistance and help in submission of evidence for any subsequent legal proceedings.

IP theft is more than just counterfeit goods Technology has increased the potential for electronic as well as physical fraud. “It’s not necessarily just what you see, in terms of tangible products, it’s also copyright infringement, protecting valuable trademarks and avoiding your brand being compromised.”

Conflict Marbella, through its London head office, has a dedicated Due Diligence team that can conduct forensic investigations using analytical tools to recover information and data from a client’s IT systems. They also have a network of discreet companies in place to covertly identify the source of counterfeiting or illegal copying of products. Very often, it is difficult for a company without experience in this area to attempt to track down the source of fake products and potentially even harder to get to the source of online infringements. However, with a network of international partners, Mike LaCorte says the world can suddenly get a lot smaller. “Whether the client wants to tackle the seller at the end of the chain or trace things back to the manufacturer of counterfeit goods, there is often an international element to our investigations. It is vital to have a company in place who can work with trusted fellow investigators across borders in order to build the whole picture of where the fraud is taking place and where it originates from.”

All of Conflict’s investigations operate within the Data Protection Act and they are registered with the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office. They comply with the UK Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act and The Human Rights Act. Protecting intellectual property is becoming a more complex issue and is clearly not going to be eradicated so companies are being urged to be better informed about the risks and how to combat them.

A

s the War of Independence (known by the British as “The Peninsular War”) reached Málaga, the American Consul there was a Scot called William Kirkpatrick. He was a Jacobite and greatly favoured the French Revolution. He was thus most acceptable to the occupying French forces. His wife was the daughter of a merchant from Liège in Belgium who had married a Malagueña. Despite holding republican views he was very proud of his claim to an ancient Scottish barony. His eldest daughter was a beautiful young lady called María Manuela Kirkpatrick.

Gradually she became integrated into a circle which included luminaries like Stendhal and Delacroix. When cholera broke out, her daughters, Francesca and Eugenia, were sent to Paris to live with her sister, where Mérimée taught them French. She fell out with her husband largely on account of her adherence to the Carlist cause, but despite this became a friend and confidante of Isabel II. (“Carlism” was a traditionalist political movement in Spain seeking the establishment of a separate line of the Bourbon dynasty on the Spanish throne.)

In the story told by the Condesa de Montijo, however, the young lady in question was employed at the tobacco factory in Málaga, and yearned to marry a member of the “los de la Manteca”; the group of rich merchants who inhabited the city. Mérimée, however, had translated the Russian Pushkin’s 1824 poem “The Gypsies” into French for the Revue des deux Mondes, and so, taken with the romance of the poem, when in 1845 his novella “Carmen” was published, the heroine had also become a gypsy. And to make the story more “Spanish” the desired merchant became a dashing torero!

“ ”

She fell in love with a one eyed lame young man who was the second son of the Captain General of Grenada and who bore the title of the Conde de Teba. The match was frowned upon by “Society” as it was considered that a mere consul’s daughter was no match for an old Spanish family. The Conde had lost his eye at Trafalgar, followed King Joseph Bonaparte back to France and served Napoleon during “The Hundred Days”. Receiving a pardon from Fernando VII, he returned to Spain. William Kirkpatrick produced his barony, and a family tree tracing his descent from Finn McCool! (Fionn mac Cumhaill, anglicised to Finn McCool, was a mythical giant, a warrior of Irish, Scottish and Manx mythology, after whom Fingal’s Cave is named.) This was enough to enable Teba to marry his beloved in the Sagrario church on December 15th, 1817.

Her husband died, and she returned to Madrid as a widow. Her elder daughter Francesca married the Duke of Alba, and María took her second daughter to Paris.

The book became very popular. When in 1858 the composer Georges Bizet travelled to Rome, he took it with him, and recorded in his journal that Mérimée was one of the favourite authors that he had read.

As the widow of a Bonapartist, she was well received: “I am absolutely the fashion here”, she wrote.

María Manuela was regarded by many as the most beautiful, cultivated and intelligent woman in Spain. She had been educated in France and England and was a born hostess and woman of decision. When her husband’s elder brother died she became Duquesa de Peñaranda del Duero, Condesa de Montijo (by which title she became generally known), Condesa de Baños, together with a string of further titles. In 1830 she met Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870) in Madrid. Prosper Mérimée was a French dramatist, historian, archaeologist, and short story writer. He was bowled over by her. He stayed at her country house and corresponded with her.

As the widow of a Bonapartist, she was well received: “I am absolutely the fashion here”, she wrote. In 1853 she was trumped by her daughter Eugenia who, as Eugénie, married the Emperor Napoleon III.

In order not to upstage her, María very sensibly returned to live in Madrid where, old, nearly blind but still beautiful, she died in her eighties. Her friendship with Prosper Mérimée stood the test of time. She tried unsuccessfully to get him married off to her best friend; ran errands for him as when she sent him his favourite cigarette papers from Madrid; and acted as his Spanish contact and researcher into various aspects of Spanish history. Then on May 16th, 1845, he wrote to her “I have just shut myself up for eight days writing a story you told me fifteen years ago, and I have probably ruined it. It was about a jaque of Málaga who killed his mistress”. The word jaque means a “bravo” or braggart, and Mérimée gave him the name of Don José. The mistress he called “Carmen”, and so wove around the two main characters one of the most typical and enduring tales of Spain ever written.

When artistic life in Paris resumed after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71, the Opéra-Comique was looking for a new work. Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy already had solid reputations as the librettists of many of Jacques Offenbach’s operettas. Halévy was a cousin of Bizet’s wife, and knew some of Bizet’s work, and so they turned to him, despite the fact that his oneact opera Djamileh, which opened at the Opéra-Comique in May 1872, had failed and was withdrawn after 11 performances. Bizet was delighted with the commission, and much discussion followed. Bizet finally proposed an adaptation of Mérimée’s novella “Carmen” which, in his view, had all the ingredients of a good and colourful story. And to make it more romantic, it had to be set in Seville, the throbbing and romantic heart of Andalucia! Poor Málaga was discarded! The opera was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, on 3 March 1875, and was not well received. The controversial main characters shocked and scandalized the audience; the tragic death of the main character on stage broke new ground in French opera and was highly controversial. Bizet died suddenly after the 33rd performance, and was therefore unaware that it would win enduring international acclaim within the next ten years.

HOME COUTURE

VIVE La France By Amy-Rose McDowell from Foc Design

HOME COUTURE

Long known as one of the most fashion conscious places on the planet, France has an impressive list of designers to be proud of: Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Louboutin, Balmain, Starck to name just a few - and we haven’t even mentioned art, music or film. As far as interior design goes, French style has been constantly referenced, revived, reinvented and regurgitated, as

in country style, decorative, off-white furniture, simple fabrics, muted colours and possibly freshly baked bread and/ or dry lavender hanging somewhere, but France is not a one-trick-pony. Look deeper into French history as well as the social impact on design throughout the past and you will find that it is responsible for some very exciting movements.

There are only two places in the “world where we can live happy: at home and in Paris ” - Ernest Hemingway

Parisian Decadence

Paris has long been known as a city that pushed boundaries designwise and Parisians are famous for the natural skill with which they do it. Unapologetic and confident, they have always been known for having a certain je ne se quoi. Caroline de Maigret’s book How To Be Parisian Wherever You Are: Love, Style And Bad Habits (Doubleday, 2014) addresses some of these issues but how can we sum it up in terms of interior design? There are formulae to follow which can contribute to the super-cool, yet decadent interior of a Parisian-style home. They often mix old with new; for instance, the perfect way to dress down an 18th century armoire is by placing modern art and accessories around it on perfectly white walls. Obviously, this would sit on a 1950s parquet floor (also known as parquet de Versailles 1684) and may be complemented by a turn of the century sofa and chair set, 1960s lamps and a simple glass coffee table scattered with various photography/ fashion literature.

Biarritz Beach Biarritz Beach Chic Chic

It’s fair to say that the French beach-chic look has been attempted in most homes at one point or another. Pale cream-grey walls, white woodwork and washed out wood or stone flooring provides the basis for this scheme, which is usually enhanced by handmade craft accessories and little carved hearts. Fabrics are high quality cotton and there may be some linen hanging around. However this look can date very quickly. Some simple ways to update this concept include introducing a hint of industrial design, which instantly modernises this classic look and moves it well away from the insipid. Try furniture with old metal wheels or industrial lighting which is not only available almost everywhere these days, but is usually cheap.

Retaining earthy colours and materials means that your space is not in danger of appearing cold. You can add even more warmth with sunset coloured accessories and art and, while keeping some of the shabby-chic furniture is fine, it is also important that this look provides humour and intrigue. Think hipster-style upcycled wooden boxes as storage or cut-up surf boards turned into shelving. Not only is it fun rifling through what one person considers rubbish and thinking about what you could do with it, but it is also environmentally sound. Don’t forget that there is a wide source of inspiration on the internet with thousands of blogs providing in-depth instructions on how to achieve this look and video tutorials about how to make items yourself. It is extremely satisfying to make things for your own home that nobody else will have and often all you need are a few fixtures and fittings from a hardware store.

“Style is a simple way of saying complicated things” Jean Cocteau.

Retro-Glamour Riviera

Wallpaper by Casamance

HOME COUTURE

The French Riviera began as a winter health resort for the British upper classes at the end of the 18th century. In more recent times it was known as the playground for the rich and beautiful, attracting stars such as Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra and many more.

It still has an air of glamour and exclusivity today, hosting the annual Cannes Film Festival since 1946. It was the place to be seen and everything was new, exciting and fashionable. The Riviera during this time was synonymous with the movement known as the Nouvelle Vague (French New Wave) which was kick-started by radical filmmakers of that era, combining gritty social issues in a way that also stylistically reflected classic American movies, of which they had been starved during the time of the Second World War and which became freely available again in the 1950s. French director Jean-Luc Godard, one of the most prominent exponents of the nouvelle vague, criticised mainstream French cinema’s “tradition of quality” which “emphasized craft over innovation, privileged established directors over new directors, and preferred the great works of the past to experimentation.” Mid-century designers were particularly ahead of their time and, in the 1950s and 1960s, interiors were spectacular. Given that the Second World War had only ended in 1945 it is remarkable that the design world did an about-turn, moving from austerity and rationing to designing items that were almost entirely created to look interesting rather than focusing on practicality and function. It was a time of indulgence and pushing the boundaries of design. A large chunk of the furniture design market was taken up by progressive American (Charles and Ray Eames), Italian (Memphis Group), German (Mies van der Rohe) and Scandinavian (Aalto) designers, but mavericks such as Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand represented the Gallic corner. The latter was initially refused an job with Le Corbusier in 1927 but went on to become one of France’s most prolific and desirable furniture designers of the 20th Century. Shying away from the tradition of rustic French country style, the colours

140

and patterns were bold, asymmetrical and abstract. Furniture became architectural rather than simply comfortable and designers shocked with their brutalist lines. Now known as ‘mid-century modern’ these pieces, regarded as timeless works of art, are widely featured in glossy magazines and command vast sums of money. It was a time when forward thinking designers had a message which they communicated beautifully and with oodles of style. Maybe because they set the bar for the fashion conscious and house proud, we have always admired French design, but more than that we love that elusive factor, style. And style is something that almost cannot be copied or explained; maybe they were just born with it? Whatever the reason, as long as they’re this cool we’re definitely going to continue to try. Our resident food and nutrition expert Bettina Campolucci Bordi explores popular dietary lifestyles.

Eating

The Old Fashioned Way! We are inundated with diet ideas and lifestyle advice on a daily basis through the mainstream media, social media, celebrities and TV programmes. Vegan, paleo, high carb, low carb, proteins, no grains – it’s a jungle to say the least. Of course, the main question should be, what suits you best? And to whom would you prefer to listen? With all the information out there, how do you proceed? Lets start by defining what all of these weird and wonderful diets, or shall we say ‘lifestyles’ are all about.

Paleo Diet The Paleo diet claims to be the original human diet. It encourages followers to eat foods that we used to eat in paleolithic times, such as nuts, seeds, meats, fish, fruits, veggies and good fats, such as olive oil, avocados etc. Foods to avoid are legumes, dairy, grains, processed foods and starches. Several books have been written on this subject and many modern day gurus claim it to be the only solution to a long and healthy life. It doesn’t take a great deal of research to realise that fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and meats were not the only sources of food our ancestors

148

survived on. Add offal, half-digested foods from animal bellies and soured milk from calves and it’s not quite as pretty a picture anymore. So all in all, the so called ‘caveman diet’ is actually rather modern.

Veganism This is an extreme form of vegetarianism that excludes meat, eggs, dairy products and all other animal-derived ingredients. Many vegans also do not eat foods that are processed using animal products, such as refined white sugar and some wines. There is some debate

as to whether certain foods, such as honey, fit into a vegan diet, if you are cooking for vegans, avoid these foods. Most vegans extend the definition of veganism beyond food and will also avoid the use of all personal and household products tested on animals and all animal derived non-food products, such as leather, fur and wool. There is some debate as to whether second hand animal products, such as a leather jacket from a thrift store, can be included in a cruelty free vegan lifestyle or not. In any case, veganism is very restrictive and, if followed to the letter, involves adherence to many rules and regulations.

WIKIPEDIA : Vegetarianism / ˈvɛdʒətɛəriənɪzəm/ is the practice of abstaining from the consumption of meat (red meat, poultry, seafood, insects and the flesh of any other animal), and may also include abstention from by-products of animal slaughter.

occasionally includes meat or fish” entered Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary in 2012, but it has quickly become one of the biggest health buzzwords today. The flexitarian label means actively moving away from consuming huge amounts of meat. It’s a healthier way of eating that includes more whole grains, pulses, fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds and a growing consciousness of where our food comes from. The main gist of the flexitarian diet is exactly what it sounds like: it’s flexible.

There are varieties of the diet as well: an ovo-vegetarian diet includes eggs but not dairy products, a lacto-vegetarian diet includes dairy products but not eggs, and an ovolacto vegetarian diet includes both eggs and dairy products. A vegan diet excludes all animal products, including eggs, dairy, and honey. Some vegans also avoid other animal products such as beeswax, leather or silk clothing, and goose-fat shoe polish.

Michael Roizen, MD, a wellness officer, says another way of thinking about meat, especially red meat, is to consider it an “occasional side dish.” He recommends cutting down red meat to about four ounces per week for optimal health.

Meet The Flexitarian Diet

Start simply, go back to basics and figure out what works for you without taking too much notice of what is trending at the moment. Not everyone should be a vegan and not everyone is equipped to eat meat - but the only person that can establish that is you!

“We are so busy following other people’s expertise and suggestions that somewhere along the line we have forgotten to listen to our own bodies.”

The term flexitarian, defined as “a person whose normally meatless diet

All flexitarian advocates point out it’s not just about eating fewer animal products, but also making smart food choices in general. This means minimally-processed, nutrient-dense vegetables, fruits, grains, and dairy. Whatever diet or lifestyle you choose, I think it is important that we stop and think for a minute. We are so busy following other people’s expertise and suggestions that somewhere along the line we have forgotten to listen to our own bodies.

INGREDIENTS : 2 Cups (120 grams) Young Coconut meat

Blend coconut meat, cashews and water until smooth. Add in probiotic and blend until just combined.

½ Cup (60 grams) Cashews, soaked

Place in a bowl, covered by a muslin cloth, in a dehydrator at 105° Fahrenheit, for 8 to 10 hours. OR if you don’t have a dehydrator keep in warm place for 8- 10 hours or overnight.

1 Capsule Probiotics Water if needed to blend

METHOD :

The yogurt needs to be in a warm place, but with a good air-flow. Once fermented, stir well. The yogurt will develop a crust from being in the dehydrator or staying out, which is still edible. You can scrape it off if you choose, but it does stir in well. When your yogurt is ready you can flavour it with anything you want. I love using maple syrup and vanilla. Add and stir in.

f top quality ingredients, prepared with love, cooked to perfection and served with a smile and a warm welcome is what you are after, then ORIGEN will seem like heaven and, if you’re a hungry carnivore then, what can we say? You may well feel that you have achieved nirvana. ORIGEN is very much a family run restaurant; 15 years ago, the team behind ORIGEN opened their first restaurant in Sotogrande, a typical Argentinian asador, before moving to La Línea and, finally, to Marbella, where they opened the famous Hacienda Patagónica in Marbella’s port. Hacienda Patagónica was an immediate success and still is, being a casual, tapas style place where diners order a variety of dishes and try a few mouthfuls of everything. Eventually the owners decided that what they really wanted was to go back to how they started and open a cosy, traditional asador where every diner feels as though they have eaten like a king or queen. What else could they call it but ORIGEN? If anything represents a return to their roots, then surely it must be this.

154

The atmosphere is casual and rustic, walls adorned with animal skins and polo memorabilia, while the tables and chairs have a comforting solidity; a wood theme predominates. Even before we have viewed the menu, we can clearly see what we are being offered – substantial dishes, cooked with expertise. These thoroughly professional restaurateurs offer a seamless experience, from top notch culinary skills to a friendly and attentive front of house service. Our waiter is a real charmer and instantly makes us feel at home, as we find a table on the terrace and scan the menu. The chef prides himself on everything being home-made and we soon find a huge, heavy knife being placed in front of each of us, as if setting the scene for the mouthwatering meat dishes to come. For our starters we ordered some classic Argentinean empanadas, which featured three different stuffings: Cheese and Caramelised Onions, Spicy Meat (which were packed with flavour but not too spicy) and ORIGEN Ragu, prepared with the special house recipe. These were absolutely delicious. We also

ordered a Provoleta with Caramelised Onion and Tomato Confit which was the best we have ever tasted. The Chorizo Criollo was an Argentinian classic and entirely authentic, while the Onion Morcilla was more local, having been manufactured in Ronda. Following this a delicious Mixed Salad was placed on our table, a wonderfully fresh and crunchy accompaniment to the meat dishes that were to follow. It is no exaggeration to say that our main courses were a meat lover’s delight and we were all grateful that we hadn’t eaten much during the day in preparation for our visit. We sampled Argentinian Lomo Alto (or Rib Eye steak) which was juicy and flavour packed along with the Solomillo (or tenderloin), which was cooked to perfection or en su punto (‘just right’) to use the correct ORIGEN phrase. The Chuletón de Ávila (a T-bone steak) had been carefully aged for 45 days at a strictly controlled temperature and the result was a full, deep flavour that is only rarely achieved. When we finally admitted that we couldn’t eat another mouthful we all asked the same question: how does the ORIGEN team manage to pack so much flavour into each and every dish? First of all, only the finest quality meat from Argentina, Galicia and Ávila is used and then it is cooked under a special wood-burning grill – designed by and constructed exclusively for ORIGEN – while being covered with a special glaze containing parsley, thyme, rosemary, dill and butter during the cooking process. Whatever the secret, this is a taste that you won’t experience anywhere else and it is utterly delicious. The wine list, too, was excellent and featured some reasonably priced and full-bodied reds, as one would anticipate in an establishment so dedicated to the consumption of meat, not to mention some lighter whites and rosés. Before leaving we just had to try the Dulce de Leche Crepes, an Argentinian speciality and, in our opinion, a must. You cannot possibly visit ORIGEN and leave without at least sampling some of these heavenly pancakes. Sometimes you can visit a restaurant and realise that the people running it have lost interest and then wonder whether they might not be happier being employed in another profession. More

occasionally, you find an establishment that exudes the sense that the team is doing exactly what they were born to do and this is most certainly the case at this homely yet elegant asador. Book a table soon before winter comes and the lure of the fire fills the restaurant. ORIGEN is open for dinner at 7:00pm but if you prefer to eat after 9:30pm it is wise to book a table. e had heard so many good things about Max Beach that we finally decided that we just had to go and try it out for ourselves. It transpired that we had chosen one of the hottest days of the year, but one thing we can most definitely stress is that this is a great place to go when the mercury rises. Maybe it’s the cool white and turquoise colour scheme of the interior, but stepping through the doors made us feel as though we were being visually cooled.

This is an excellent place to go for lunch, whether you’re dropping in for a quick snack or are planning a more extravagant outing with friends, because the menu is just the right combination of imaginative and comforting - just think classic dishes with an exciting twist. We asked to be seated at a table on the terrace that would allow us to take advantage of the wonderful views of the Mediterranean. As a backdrop to an enjoyable lunch break this spot cannot

be beaten and the sea breeze was a welcome relief from the intense heat of the early afternoon sun. Diners can choose from a set menu or, if you prefer, the wonderfully extensive a la carte menu, which is what we chose to view. Given the temperature, we decided to start with a couple of lighter dishes and if, like us, you visit during the summer, may we recommend the Tomato and Buffalo Mozzarella? Dressed to perfection, this proved to be

There are many things to celebrate about Max Beach; there’s the superb location, the close proximity to the sea and a five-star beach club, the welcome is warm, the food totally fabulous, but one thing we were not anticipating was how reasonable the prices are for an eating place of this quality. You would expect to pay considerably more for a five-star experience like this.

exactly what we needed. The Goat’s Cheese Salad was fabulously tasty and the Chicken Tempura with Apples and Cucumber, served with a delicious dipping sauce was crisp and as light as a feather. We could see the standard of presentation when other diners were served their dishes and when our chosen main courses arrived we were not disappointed. Sole Meunière is a French classic, a recipe that allows the subtle flavours of the fish a starring role, and this was cooked to perfection. Two diners are committed carnivores, so it was no surprise that their choices were taken from the red meat section of the menu. We can heartily recommend the Fillet Steak, a melt in the mouth experience to tempt even the most rabid pescetarian – just say how you like it and the Max Beach chef will make sure that it arrives at your table in perfect condition. The Max Burger was almost as much an artistic as a culinary triumph – a tower of succulent Beef patty, melting Cheese and the Egg on top of the impressive stack breaking to bathe the meat in yolk. We had also, somewhat optimistically, ordered a Max Salad to share but somehow we managed to make significant headway with this too. You really should order this: top quality Smoked Salmon and warm Goat’s Cheese is carefully layered on a bed of Mixed Leaves and Apple and dressed with Pine Nuts and Honey and this proved an especially good choice.

One final piece of advice – if you’re planning to visit at lunchtime, set aside a few hours. Once you arrive at this beautiful venue you won’t be in any hurry to leave! maxbeach.com

The Heat is On! Porterhouse Grill is raising the bar for a great steak! A good steak is very often at the top of many people’s list of favourite foods. There is nothing quite like the scent of steak cooked on the grill wafting through the air to make the olfactory sense perk up and the stomach start to rumble. The thought of a juicy piece of meat cooked to perfection and melting in the mouth is a meat lover’s dream and when excellent service, a warm and friendly ambience plus some heavenly cocktails accompany it, then that steak is even better. And, you will find all this and more at the Porterhouse Grill in Nueva Andalucia. Located adjacent to Marbella’s casino, Porterhouse is already garnering five-star ratings from its guests on TripAdvisor. So, the Society team was thrilled to receive an invitation to review this new restaurant and get our teeth into one of its famed Porterhouse steaks. Even the ‘reformed vegetar-

ian’ in the party had a carnivorous gleam in her eye as she sat down at the table. Maythel, Porterhouse’s manager, whose smiles and friendly manner enchanted all of us, greeted us and showed us to a table outside. The evening was hot and humid out of the shade, but the leafy and secluded patio area at Porterhouse ensured that we were all able to cool down to a gentler temperature conducive to eating.

COSTA CUISINE

Once we had a welcoming drink each, Maythel brought us warm bread rolls with an outstanding chimichurri salsa to dip it in. The rolls were light and fluffy with a delicate crust and one of our party was so enthusiastic about dipping the bread in the beautifully flavoured salsa that before we could blink all the rolls had disappeared. And then the starters appeared. Some eyes were totally captivated by the Mac & Cheese with Crispy Bacon and Truffle Oil that bubbled and oozed deliciousness. It is hard to come by a good Mac & Cheese and while to some it may seem the most unsophisticated of dishes, for others it is manna from heaven and the Porterhouse recipe didn’t disappoint on that score. The Baked Camembert studded with Rosemary, Garlic and Honey had a crunchy crust with a liquid gold centre that we scooped up with the accompanying rustic toast and savoured every last cheesey bit of it. And if these don’t whet your appetite, then the Homemade Chicken Liver Patê with Piccalilli is divine. This patê has the lightest and smoothest texture and we all agreed that this was one of the most refined we’d ever tasted. Piccalilli took some explaining to those who don’t know about the British love of pickles and the salty-sour flavour of this British classic that is based on an Indian recipe brought back from the days of The Raj complemented the patê to perfection. Once we had made short work of the starters Maythel appeared with cocktails. Oh my, these were good. The Mai Tai, served in a highly unusual ceramic container that resembled a stone statue from the Easter Islands was a delightful concoction of Dark Rum, Orgeat Syrup, Fresh Lime Juice, Orange Curacao and Pineapple juice. The Jamaican Mule was sublime and a refreshing drink for the summer heat. It is made with Spiced Rum, Lime Juice and Ginger Beer that combined heat of ginger with the cool lime. And fans of watermelon will adore the Watermelon Cooler that blends Vodka, Fresh Watermelon and Sugar Syrup. If you like fruity cocktails then the Bootylicious is also one to try. There is also an extensive wine list featuring wines from

“There are dishes for those who prefer not to eat meat, such as salmon, calamari and a vegetarian dish of the day.” around Europe and the staff are happy to advise on pairing them with dishes. Shortly after, Maythel put a stand covered in a cloth on the table. “I’m going to work some magic,” she laughed. We peered under the cloth when she disappeared into the kitchen, but there was nothing there. She suddenly reappeared with a tray holding what looked at first like a King Cobra rearing from a basket to a snake charmer’s tune. Our jaws dropped! The Porterhouse for two was a majestic piece of meat that we tucked into eagerly. Perfectly grilled and seasoned it was accompanied by grilled tomatoes and mushrooms that proved the simplest dishes are often the tastiest. And chips! The triple cooked chips at Porterhouse have a final fry in beef dripping. We all agreed that good, old-fashioned dripping beats every kind of oil hands down. Chef David, who is the maestro in the kitchen, popped out to ask if we were enjoying the dinner. We assured him that we loved every morsel so far and it was the truth! A mixed grill of belly pork ribs, rotisserie cooked chicken, chistorra and chorizo sausage gave us a taste of some of the other dishes available on the menu that you can have as single orders, or as mixed grill to share with a friend. Plus, if you’re a burger fan, you are well catered for here. And, there are dishes for those who prefer not to eat meat, such as salmon, calamari and a vegetarian dish of the day. It really is a most appetising menu and it struck us that when you want a restaurant that will keep kids happy as well as older family members, then Porterhouse has designed a menu with widely recognisable dishes suited to all, and we all know that familiarity is a comfort. We were bursting at the seams when Maythel brought dessert and a cheese platter with chutney. But who can refuse Chocolate Tart and a Forest Fruit Cheesecake? Not us! And they were absolutely worth making room for. It is worth noting that Porterhouse offers an “Early Dinner Menu” from 5.30pm-7.30pm with two set menu prices. As Maythel explained to us, these set menus give you exactly the same quality and quantity of food as if you were dining at any other time. The meat at Porterhouse is of the highest quality, the menu is one to work your way through and the service is impeccable – this Grill serves steaks and much more in style. Quail Candy with Chocolate Mole Although considered comparatively mild compared to some meats, game birds such as quail have earthy flavours that are more robust than chicken. Therefore they provide an array of pairing possibilities. At D-wine we serve Quail Wrapped in a Vine Leaf with Stone Fruits & Chilli Chocolate Mole, on a Bed of Guacamole with Quail Eggs. Mole adds a savoury touch to the dish with a subtly spicy kick. The final flavours of the dish are earthy, rich and rustic.

D-Wine Advice QUAIL & WINE

For the right match just be sure that your chosen red wine has low or moderate tannin, lovely fruitiness and sufficient acidity, because this luscious quail dish is low in fat, significant in sweetness and spicy enough to benefit from a dash of medium bodied burgundy style red. A glass of modern Ribeira Sacra goes hand in hand with the dish and drives right through the palate whispering its light tannins, smooth minerality and alluring red berry flavours, subtly complicated by Asian spices and bitter chocolate notes at the finish.

La Sala in the Sky offers an opportunity to dine closer to the stars!

A

nyone with even a slight interest in the world of restaurants and chefs will be aware that there is a constant search for “something different” to attract diners, whether it is a new style of cooking (remember the advent of nouvelle cuisine?) or a venue that goes beyond the boundaries of the usual bricks and mortar restaurant. The La Sala Group has found its solution to this with the launch of La Sala in the Sky – an open-air dining platform suspended 50 metres above Marbella serving exciting dishes prepared by Chef Aitor Perurena of Estudio Gastronomica and managed by “Dinner in the Sky”, a Belgian company that has taken this model of dining worldwide. There is a long-running fascination with dining at height: At.mosphere is a glass panelled restaurant at 1,450 feet in Dubai’s Burj Khalifa tower, and is the world’s highest restaurant. China is awash with restaurants at over 1,000 feet in its ever-growing skyscraper landscape and even relatively low-rise London has a love affair with restaurants with a view that started with the Post Office Tower, although The Shard is now the preferred destination.

164

Marbella doesn’t have a skyscraper, and hopefully never will, so the La Sala in the Sky solution is innovative and inspiring, if a bit scary as well for some. On the evening of our ‘take off’ the Society team arrived early to see Marbella’s mayor Pepe Bernal, who looked reassuringly happy when he returned to earth. It is something of a coup for Marbella to have a Dinner in the Sky restaurant in our midst. This Belgianbased company has created more than 5,000 dinner events in 40 cities around the world. Iconic locations have included the Kuala Lumpur Tower, the Marina of Dubai, Villa Borghese in Rome, Athens, Copacabana Beach and Cape Town. Forbes magazine has named it one of the world’s most extravagant meals. Even though the concept has run since 2006 around the world, this is the first time that it has made an appearance in the Costa del Sol. The guests for the next sitting were by now gathered around the dining platform and watching Chef Aitor and his team prepare the boxes of food. As you may imagine, once you are suspended 50 metres in the air there is no “I’ll just run downstairs and get another knife,” – everything has to be packed with military precision. The platform, which holds 22 diners per sitting, is raised from the ground by a crane, and anyone passing through Puerto Banús on the N340 cannot fail to see it standing in front of the Aqwamist nightclub. For those on the ground, it is dining as a spectator

and Estudio Gastronomico. This Basque chef’s work is already well known and highly regarded amongst Marbellís thanks to the “1870” restaurant

sport, accompanied by whooping and cheering as we were all strapped into our seats by the professionals who manage the platform. “Safety first” is most definitely paramount with this restaurant and our “flight captain” for the evening explained the Dinner in the Sky rules once we’d got over the initial excitement of the lift off sensation: there were several gasps and cheers of glee from all the diners as the crane winched the platform up, as you may imagine. Ah yes, the rules: the most important one is no throwing anything over the side, not even a paper napkin. The extremely comfortable seats do allow for swivel to take in the 360° panoramic views of Marbella, and some brave souls even tried out the ‘recline’ function, but you certainly can’t make any dramatic movement or get out of your seat. Only the chef and his team are allowed to stand and they all wear safety harnesses to prevent any mishaps. Whilst we all loved the novelty of floating over Marbella, we were also keen to tuck into the appetising five-course tasting menu with paired wines and champagne, designed and prepared by Aitor Perurena

San Pedro, that demonstrates his exceptional talents and those of the students from the culinary school Estudio Gastronomico he set up in partnership with his wife.

in

Wine was poured and the first course of Bloody Mary Foam served on a bed of avocado and finished with a fresh cockle arrived. It was light as feather and simply divine. The fresh, clean taste of the foam cleansed the palate while the avocado and cockle complemented each other perfectly. Our wine glasses were refilled for the next course of Tuna Tartar with Lime Cloud served with Wakame seaweed and Soy mayo. Lime and tuna is a great marriage of tastes, with the acidity

boosting the tuna’s dense flavour, and the Asian touches topped it off splendidly. Then came the Spider Crab Cannelloni with a Cardinal Prawn. Absolutely YUM! Meanwhile, the wine kept flowing and the dinner guests were enthusiastically sending videos and stills to every social media channel. But the arrival of the Teriyaki Lacquered Beef with celery and asparagus made everyone put their phones and cameras down. The beef was sublime and so soft that the knife glided through it. Furthermore, its exquisite flavour was a testament to both the chef’s skill and the quality of the products he uses. Now it was time for the grand finale – champagne flutes were filled and the dessert was served. The sheer delight was evident on everyone’s faces: it was a Special Magnum created by Estudio Gastronomico. This white chocolate confection decorated with pretty flowers contained a passion fruit mousse and was served with a passion fruit purée. It was worth being there just for this: an ‘ordinary’ Magnum will never be quite so pleasurable again. And then it was time to return to terra firma. What an incredible experience we all had; it was definitely a night to store in the memory chest – we can truthfully claim we’ve been fed in the clouds! It’s not hard to see why – if you haven’t visited Small World Café yet, make sure it’s on your list of places to go. SmallWorld Café +34 952 77 10 46 smallworldcafe.com

Welcome to the Marbella Club Kid’s Club Memories to last a lifetime

Come and join us as we open the doors to our Kids Club, a place where

all the ingredients have been carefully chosen to form a playful and dynamic space that invites to explore, discover and experience. There will be something for everyone to enjoy and to be inspired by. Our programme has been specially designed to help develop and nurture special talents, teach essential life skills and offer a truly extraordinary childhood experience.

Open 365 days of the year from 10am to 6pm and intended for children aged 4-14, the Kid´s Club has something to suit the personality and interests of every child.

Be ready to roll up your sleeves and get creative in the Garage Kitchen or let your imagination run wild in the arts and craft studio.

We are delighted to announce a unique

opportunity to become a member of our Kid’s Club. We are now offering a limited number of memberships for families here in the Marbella area and also for those who are not based here but who visit Marbella on a regular basis.

Sport lovers will burn off excess energy with the extensive range of action-packed sports and seaside activities on offer, including sea kayaking and paddle surf.

If you wish to receive further information about our Memberships please contact Marta Arrese / arrese@marbellaclub.com

IT’S TIME TO GIVE SOMETHING BACK

Mary Locke Burgess, Director of Alegria Animal Aid, has spent her whole life rescuing and giving refuge to animals in need. She currently looks after more than 80 rescue dogs who would have been destroyed had she not intervened, along with a collection of cats, geese, ducks, parrots, rabbits, sheep and a wide selection of horses. It is a common occurrence for Mary to find an old donkey tied to her gate by an owner who has no more use for her or to discover a box of puppies discarded like rubbish on her land. Mary also owns Finca La Alegria, a livery and private, family run riding school situated in La Cala de Mijas, just five minutes from the coast. She was able to fund her rescue work with profits from the livery but now, having fallen on difficult times Mary, who has given so much to those in need, needs our help. SOCIETY Marbella and The Boardwalk Marbella are working together to help raise funds to pay for food, vet bills and general care of Mary’s rescued animals. The Boardwalk will be mixing fashion and fundraising by throwing a champagne afternoon tea party on 18th August 2016. Guests will enjoy a fashion show featuring a brand new clothing range, while singer and saxophonist Joe will be giving up his time to entertain everyone for this

wonderful cause. Not only will this be one of the events of the summer, you will also be helping to save lives. The Boardwalk’s Kara Robertson says, “I’ve known Mary for a long time and I’ve watched her rescue numbers grow, as she is so big hearted. I have also witnessed the love and passion she shows the dogs. I think it’s important to help the little charities too, as these are often forgotten. Alegria is especially close to my heart, as the Disney puppies that I fostered as babies are still there, waiting to be homed.” How can you help? By donating unwanted items that can be sold at the Alegria Animal Aid Charity Shop. You can also support the charity directly via PayPal alegriaanimalaidandrescue@gmail.com or Bank Account Name:Asoc. Alegria Animal Aid and Rescue. Banco Sabadell IBAN: ES86 0081 0596 6900 0203 1608 BIC: BSABESBB Maybe you would prefer your assistance to be more hands on? Why not think of going to visit the animals? The donkeys can never get enough carrots and cuddles, there are bundles of puppies to play with or you could even enjoy a trek through the campo on a wide variety of mounts, from one of the Shetland ponies all the way up to a beautiful Andalusian horse. Please support Mary with adoptions, food and donations. Charity Reg. No. 11718 in La Cala Home to Dogs, Pups & Horses.

IT’S ALL POKEMON GO! “Catch ‘em all!” is the game cry of Pokemon GO and now all of Spain is joining in the craze that is sweeping the world. It is making newspaper headlines and even newscasters don’t seem to be able to resist slipping a reference to it into news reports. Since 15 July, Spanish users have been able to download the free app for iOS or Android to their smartphones and join in the hunt for Pikachu and friends. You may notice that more young people than usual are pounding the paseo, phone in hand, hoping to catch one. Of course, people walking around studying their phones rather than looking where they are going is not a new phenomenon, but now the numbers have surely increased. And this is one of the game’s drawbacks. Since its launch there have already been a few casualties: a lorry driver in the USA crashed into a tree while driving and playing it, and there are others. Following its arrival in Spain, churches, cemeteries and historical buildings have reported being swamped with gamers, because these are the places where rare Pokemon are to be found. The game has an in-built map that indicates the best places to capture the creatures and while gamers can just as easily find them in the park, on the bus or especially on the beach here, it seems that the most desired Pokemon are to be found in more out of the way places. Indeed, one young man reported that although his mother had been begging him to go to church with her for 15 years, after two days of playing Pokemon GO, he went with her. Why? Yes, there was a Pikachu in the church, much to the lad’s delight. Marbella, with its many open spaces and sunny weather is an ideal environment for Pokemon GO players, so expect to see those smartphone gamers everywhere this summer. Or, try it yourself - it’s free fun and exercise!

Considering that many galleries are from the USA, the UK and South America, and in 2016 a gallery from China turned up. Of course many local galleries also participate including Pedro Peña and Stoa. This is a coup for Marbella, and Zaia is equally pleased that it is attracting serious art buyers from those areas and the Middle East as well. Around 50 big collectors turned up at last year’s show, plus some just walked through the door because they happened to be in Marbella on holiday. But it’s not just for millionaires – the fair also attract families, students and holidaymakers who want to be part of what is sure to become a star of Marbella’s cultural calendar. We can’t wait for next year’s Art Marbella!

ART MARBELLA SHINES AGAIN! Art Marbella returned to Marbella for a second year this summer. It is a testament to last year’s success that the organisers returned yet again to the city’s Palacio de Congresos for a five-day event this time. The powerhouse behind Art Marbella is Alejandro Zaia who founded the PINTA Fairs in London and New York and is a renowned expert in Latin American art. He chose to launch the fair in Marbella because “it’s the hot spot of the European summer” and from his perspective it is an ideal meeting point for the contemporary art world. He describes it as “a crossroads—aesthetically and conceptually—between Europe and the Middle East. Indeed, Zaia and his curatorial team are very much focused on making Art Marbella a premiere stop on the international cultural calendar. The gallery owners seem to agree and Zaia was quite rightly delighted that 75% of the gallery owners who had stands at the inaugural fair returned this year.

THE PROUD IMPS OF GIBRALTAR If Euro 2016 taught football fans anything it was that you don’t always need to have a team with big stars to beat the squads that do. Iceland, both Irish teams and Wales all proved that in their various ways. This trend then spilled over into the Champion’s League qualifiers when Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps beat the mighty Celtic in the first leg of the second round. Gibraltarians and football fans on the Costa del Sol were over the moon at the result, which was the biggest shock in European football history, certainly of this century. How had the Imps, a team with a line-up of semi-professional part-time players, including a policeman and a taxi driver (who drove a fan to the match before quickly changing into his kit) managed to take on Celtic and win? It’s the kind of story that all football fans love because it proves that anything is possible. Gibraltar joined UEFA in 2014 as its 54th member and the Imps became the first Gibraltarian team to play in the Champions League. At home they are Gibraltar’s No. 1 team, and they have enjoyed moderate success playing other UEFA teams in the last two years, most notably beating FC Santa Coloma in 2015 to reach the second round

192

qualifiers and FC Flora Tallinn in 2016 to reach the second round again, which is how the Imps ended up facing Celtic, first at Gibraltar’s Victoria Stadium, when Lee Casciaro put the winning goal in the back of the net and sent Scotland’s No. 1 team back home to think about what went wrong. Casciaro is a policeman with Gibraltar’s Defence Police and his brothers Ryan and Kyle are also on the Imps team. As the UK sports news reported on the eve of the return match at Celtic’s

grounds: the Imps usually play to about 60 fans and Celtic to at least 60,000. Sadly, the Gibraltar lads couldn’t reprise their previous performance but they showed the world that you don’t need diamond ear studs and a multimillion £/€ salary to play the beautiful game at international level. As proud Imps captain Roy Chipolina told the press, “The lads can go home with their heads held high.” We’d have to agree and look forward to the Lincoln Red Imps future forays into the Champions League.
