IT’S SUMMER!… LET’S REBUILD THE ROUNDABOUTS As with every previous holiday season, our looney local authorities took the unanimously, unpopular decision to rebuild half the Coast’s roundabouts, and for good measure they included a liberal sprinkling of the area’s busiest bridges. Yes, you have our attention... but for the love of ice cream… why? It’s evidently too hot for the workmen and the traffic is backed up for miles in every direction. Maybe consider November or January for the next tranche of “improvements”! Just a thought. In a month where it nearly “came home” and bogus writers failed to grasp the concept of pseudonyms, July also saw a grateful return to full beaches and queues for our restaurants. Here’s hoping August is equally busy and we can all take on some “insulation” for whatever lies ahead. Our cover features Stephani Zambrano Leyzac, the powerhouse behind luxury property development company in Marbella and Canada Lavele. Continuing the theme, blonde bombshell Taylor Swift takes center stage on page 38 as we dive into her music career and explore how she has further enhanced her burgeoning reputation with her philanthropic endeavors. Turn to Grammies on page 46 if you are looking for some lighthearted fun, as we delve into Insta’s most popular witty accounts. From art with spicy language to entertaining animals, these pages are sure to bring you some lighthearted relief. Resident speed freaks should turn to page 104 where motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the Marc Phillip Gemballa Marsien – a turbocharged Porsche flat-six. Elsewhere, the world’s wealthiest humans are busily comparing the size of their relative rockets... page 124 explains Wishing you a wonderful August. Andy Clark

Building

the future

Boss lady, superwoman, mother and developer extraordinaire… these are just some of the badges that Stephani Zambrano Leyzac proudly adorns.

“Diversity drives innovation”

S

tephani is renowned for wearing several hats in the business world and she undoubtedly tackles each one with passion and determination (all whilst wearing 5inch heels). She is the biggest cheerleader for woman and their endless capabilities, I am almost certain that she will release a best selling “How Woman Rule” book soon. Don’t let her stunning looks and flair for fashion deter you from her accomplishments; she graduated with a full football scholarship as a civil engineer in Huston, USA and has since launched a hugely successful, luxury development company in Marbella and also in Toronto; Canada. Her ambition started from a young age, she was born to a geotechnical engineer father and a mother who was an architect, you could say she

was destined to work with building sketches. As much as Stephani’s life sounds like it has been precisely planned and executed with precision, it wasn’t always the case. Growing up during an economically disastrous spell in Venezuela, it meant this empowered woman had to stand taller than any man and prove her worth. I asked Stephani how she did that and more…

An industry dominated by men. The number of women on the front line of a job site is only 1 for every 100 employees in the field. There is only 1.25 percent of women in the workforce. The industry needs more women, more diversity. “Diversity drives innovation”. We are detail oriented and are definitely just as sharp as men. I might even say we are tougher.

“What makes a powerful woman is the combination of personal drive and ambition.”

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about “the construction industry” ?

How did you end up working in the industry? I have been working in construction for seven years. I have a degree in Civil Engineering and a specialisation in Construction Project Management.

27

I come from a family of successful builders. My mom and sister are architects. My father is an engineer. “He raised me like a tomboy” (she laughs) and taught me to be strong and independent.

freedom and being fearless. What makes a powerful woman is the combination of personal drive and ambition. To be willing to accept all the opportunities and risks that life provides her. I am go-getter kind of girl.

What do you think is one of the hardest things you have personally faced as a female property developer?

Do you think there are any barriers to success or growth as a female leader in construction?

Always being the only woman in the field. Add to that, moving to so many different countries and dealing with different men, mentalities, cultures and weather. One of the toughest moments was when I moved to Canada, with no family or friends, and I worked as a project manager for a company building a 14,000m2 commercial building. I had also never seen snow before in my life. I had to work with a lot of Middle Eastern and European men that were not used to seeing and dealing with a woman in the field. As challenging as that was, the temperature outdoors was generally around -10 degrees. Craziest time of my life.

What does being a powerful woman/ entrepreneur mean to you? For a lot of woman power means money. For me it means

28

There are still a lot of barriers and, let’s face it, it is a tough business for a young

woman to be working in, especially one which most would call ‘a man’s business’. My husband is my biggest supporter. With almost 40 years in the construction and development business with his company Kartellè Corporation based in Toronto, Canada. So he knows a thing or two about construction. In my opinion, your mind is your own barrier and there is nothing we cannot do. It is all about being persistent, tough, sometimes bitchy and hard working. Women bring that “flavour” to the field.

What’s the greatest risk you’ve undertaken? Moving to so many different countries by myself and pursuing my dreams while everybody called me crazy. I have lived and worked in four different countries but moving to ‘English only’ Canada was the greatest challenge. I actually ended up in Toronto by mistake after missing my flight to the USA. I did not know anyone and I fell in love with the huge structures and the construction challenges they presented! I have this kind of personality that I love to take risks, living new experiences and pursuing each opportunity. Life is too short and I don’t want to live with regrets.

Can you tell us about the proudest moment/ achievement in your life? Giving birth to my baby Logan and creating my 2nd baby Lavele Corporation. They are a year apart in age and are a handful to control. Lavele Corporation is a development company specialising in the construction of high-end luxury finished villas in Marbella and Toronto. Now Lavele is following in the big footsteps of Kartellè Corporation of Toronto, Canada, who has completed over $2B in high rise and commercial developments around the world.

How would you describe a Lavele residence and what can we expect in the upcoming months? A Lavele residence brings flair, edge and an unusual bravura to all our projects. We are building homes with a combination of Canadian style, our trademark attention to minute details and “outside the box” innovation. The company is growing and we are proud that we have now sold projects off plan. 2022 will feature a villa project with a helicopter landing pad and much more …. So stay tuned! @stephyzh |

In her debut collection, Allen underlines the common threads between a variety of experiences, from what it means to exist as a Black person in America to the tense relationships between mothers and daughters. Throughout, as she explores womanhood, freedom and more. Allen shines a light on the spaces that connect and divide us, coalescing into an electric portrait of joy and pain.

THE DRUG LORD’S SON by Rainer Helin

Rainer Helin is the son of Toomas Helin, someone Estonian police consider to be a leader of the Linnuvabriku crime group. During his criminal career, he’s been suspected of smuggling a tonne of cannabis from Africa to Europe, a crime for which he received bail for the price of 1.5 Estonian kroons, one of the largest ever in the country’s history. He is also suspected of stealing 64 luxury cars from Germany, worth about four billion euro, and selling them in France and Spain. His son Rainer, born in 1992 in Zürich, spent a lot of his youth living in different Mediterranean islands including Malta. Now, he’s published his first book, The Drug Lord’s Son, a true account of his life as the firstborn son of a notorious criminal – and he includes some of his time in Malta.

Summer has arrived and so have the latest gadgets. To quote Ferris Bueller - “tech moves pretty fast” so if you don’t continue reading you could miss out on this years must-have toys. Even if you’re a bit of a technophobe, you will be sure to find something to tickle your techie tastebuds.

Marshall Major IV Headphones British amplifier matriarchs; Marshall, have been at the top of the audio game for over fifty-five years, but it was only a decade ago that they decided to venture into headphones. These retro-inspired Major series is now on its fifth iteration, and they’re one of the best affordable overear options on the market: 80+ hours of wireless playtime, wireless charging and a much-improved foldable design. That’s not to mention the quality sound. As unfussy as they are impressive and perfect for lounging on the beach.

Fitbit Sense In the minds of millennials, fitness and wellness are the yin and yang of a balanced lifestyle. Sitting down to practise your breathing can, in theory, be just as beneficial as puffing your way through a 10k. The Fitbit Sense, with its temperature, stress, blood oxygen, sleep and fitness trackers, aims to cover all the bases. The new heart rhythm sensor – an ECG app that helps to assess your ticker for atrial fibrillation – is particularly impressive, ditto the stress sensor (in which you place your palm over the face of the watch and track changes over time) and guided meditation features. It also takes blood oxygen levels while you sleep, and the fitness apps are as good as ever. A great all-rounder for anyone who wants to take care of their physical and mental health.

Gilette heated razor kit The chill blade of a slightly too cold razor on your cheek probably isn’t one of the most pressing difficulties of life in the 2020s, granted, but it’s still something that you can do something about. Gilette’s new one comes with a heating bar that gives you the instant sensation that the five blades crossing your face are being immediately followed by a hot towel. It warms up near enough instantly to either 43 or 50 degrees centigrade – your choice, sir – and charges wirelessly on its stand.

36

Harman Citation 200 s A new portable speaker coming for Sonos’s crown, the Citation 200 has a lot going for it. First of all, Harman’s model is a cheaper option whilst still maintaining premium sound quality and a good selection of features (Google Assistant, Apple AirPlay and Chromecast). The sleek style (various colours available) will mean this little guy will fit perfectly with any decor. The rechargeable battery life is also impressive: a full 8 hours, making it perfect for outdoor use. Pool party?

Leica M10-R Digital s Rangefinder Camera Yes, we know it isn’t cheap. That much is obvious. But we’ve had a little look at your Instagram profile (it doesn’t matter how), and we’re sorry to say that it’s going to need some serious investment – sadly, a black and white iPhone filter or opting for “Valencia” on Insta does not make a good picture. With the Leica M10-R, you’ll be getting a beautiful and brilliant camera from one of the most seasoned manufacturers in the game. Compact and incredibly easy to use, with an impressive 40-megapixel sensor, it’s the perfect base from which to delve into the often tricky and confusing world of photography. Disclaimer - don’t blame us if your partner now makes you their official photographer.

I

n 2017, as it reached an all-time high, it seemed suddenly everyone was talking about Bitcoin. Somewhat reassuringly among my friends, the majority, like me, were mainly talking about Bitcoin in terms such as “what the fuck is a Bitcoin?” but the number of us suddenly asking, “what the fuck is a Bitcoin?” was nevertheless testament to the fact that suddenly everyone was talking about Bitcoin. Despite hearing tales of the millions to be made, I quickly parked cryptocurrencies on the same mental shelf of complete indifference as sports betting Something I had no prior experience of or innate knack for, better left to the experts / toothless alcoholics in Ladbrokes. I quickly resolved that if I didn’t so much as dip my toe into crypto, I’d never stand to make a fast buck but I also wouldn’t stand to lose my shirt and if I never stuck my head in a Ladbrokes, I’d never stand to.... go to the

toilet only to realise i’d already gone to the toilet on myself five minutes before standing whilst shouting red-faced at the tiny man riding on the back of a horse who’d just lost me the car my wife was merciful enough to leave me when she... well, left me. (Apologies to any readers who prefers soiling themselves in William Hill - I see you) The following year, the Bitcoin price crashed, mass interest waned and I remained comfortably uninformed and aloof, minus any niggling feeling there was easy money waiting to be made on a punt (“There’s gold in them there hills!!”)

Our online cache seems to be what matters most and the art world looks to be catching on.

Four years later, I’m finally locking intellectual horns with cryptocurrencies (read: doing a couple of searches on Google and wiki) as I grapple with ancillary terms such as “blockchains” and “Non-fungible tokens” (And you thought all tokens were fungible! Ha. You SIMPLETON!)

The reason? I read that earlier this year someone called “Beeple” sold a purely digital artwork for $69.4 million. (Guess it’s been a better year for some than others...) His moniker now appears alongside Monet, Picasso and Van Gogh in rankings of the world’s biggest art sales, only to get there they had to create fragile, irreplaceable masterworks, then DIE ages ago, whilst he’s still knocking about with a copy of photoshop, a name a Pokemon would be embarrassed by and a 70 million dollar grin on his chevy.... oh and a Frappuccino. I bet he drinks Frappuccinos. It shouldn’t be a surprise really. Some years ago we stopped actually printing our images, despite the exponential increase in photos being taken since every mobile began arriving equipped with a high

resolution camera. Jessops and Snappy Snaps all but disappeared from the high street as we began hoarding our digital files, an endless, hidden treasury of 1s and 0s, ascribed occasional “value” by a like, a comment or a share when those 1s and 0s aligned in the right combination to make our bums look covetously big or small, our teeth particularly white or our eyes particularly green. Our online cache seems to be what matters most and the art world looks to be catching on. Who cares if you’ve got an actual Monet hanging in your museum anyway? The museums are all probably shut mate. Internet’s not. Popular images, videos, memes and gifs get shared around the globe in less time than it takes for the Tate to restock their vending machines and now both creators and collectors alike have a means to make money from them. By registering a “piece”, be that a digital artwork, a video clip, a meme or whatever as a non-fungible token (NFT) on a digital ledger known as a blockchain, authentic ownership can

now be proven, even on heavily reproduced files. The more reproduced and widely recognised, theoretically the more potentially valuable an NFT becomes. For some buyers it’s an investment, and for others, just as with fine art collecting, it’a all about bragging rights – the opportunity to nab a bit of history or ride a cultural wave.

Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter recently sold his first ever tweet for a fortune. No doubt the buyer will keep themselves endlessly entertained ruminating on “just setting up my twttr”, whose price tag of $2.9 million makes it just $580,000 per word, or $725,000 per word if you only count words that are actual fucking words. Bargain! After some 13 years on YouTube in which time it racked up close to a billion views and helped popularise the notion of a viral hit, the original Charlie bit my finger video has been sold as an NFT for the equivalent of $760,999, an amount the family of the cannibalistic former toddler has said will now put all four children through university.

Another of Beeple’s creations, a 10 second digital animation featuring a seemingly collapsed Donald Trump was purchased in October 2020 by art collector Pablo Rodriguez-Fraile for $67,000, then resold in February 2021 for $6.6 million. The sale exemplifies the recent explosion of interest in NFTs as not just the newest creative market but an investment opportunity akin to early Bitcoin. As with any hype-driven movement, there may be tears when bubbles burst but for the time being, interest is only growing. You can’t blame the artists for jumping on the NFT train. Everyone gotta eat and for every celebrated visionary earning millions for chopping a shark in half, there are dozens of extremely talented folk scraping by in a manner the Young Ones would baulk at. Crypto art platforms such as OpenSea and Foundation provide a virtual space to both show and trade their creations, whilst the blockchain provides unquestionable ownership over their intellectual property. What’s more, originator have the option to retain a percentage of the profit each time an NFT changes hands so ballooning popularity and value benefit the creators, not just wily investors. With the advent of NFT’s, it seems the eternal conundrum “Is it art?” just got a Gen Z reframing.

Summer can bring some really aggravating posts - from marriage proposals to perfect beach bodies and those friends who always seem to be jet setting around (do they ever actually work?). But for those who are still slaving away in the heat, working on losing that quarantine weight (you look great btw) and still as single as a slice of cheese, then you need to follow these incredibly witty and down right hilarious accounts. They are all guaranteed to liven up your Insta feed with their humorous posts and cheeky memes, we all need a break from the sunset shots and selfies.

His real name is Josh Ostrovsky but is recognised as The Fat Jew. With a hairdo that is very questionable, but bizarrely suits him, and his offbeat social media content—a combination of irreverent humour, self-deprecation, and, of course, memes, he has firmly placed himself on the comedic centre stage.

If you’re not following Betches already, then what have you even been doing all this time on Instagram? Every single one of these posts will have you cackling and forgetting that you still have a million chores to do. Be warned, you will be sucked into a deep hole of endless scrolling.

The description on this creative account says it best: “When art meets text from your existential dread.” A grid filled with captivating artwork with some added spicy words, it’s a meme page for the more mature, refined taste. Follow at your own risk.

Anyone who has ever had to deal with the end of a relationship will definitely relate to these posts. These are real screenshots of message exchanges between ex’s. Some are probably so relatable you will wonder if your ex submitted it… submissions are accepted if you’re feeling inclined to participate.

They say to never work with animals or children. Well, sometimes animals can create better content than us mere mortals. A page purely dedicated to animals (cats, dogs and every creature inbetween) and their entertaining ways. The tagline for the account sums it up perfectly “very chilled, very wild”.

Awkward celebrity photos are the staple in this somewhat psychedelic account. Have you ever seen Anthony Hopkins chaotic salsa dancing in a Hawaiian tacky shirt? Well you will if you scroll down on this feed. And in case you were wondering, no, there’s no affiliation to the Hollywood actor but he might make an appearance.

This one is for the ladies. Comedian & New York Times Bestselling Author; Claudia Oshry is the face behind this account. She understands how real the struggle of dating and workout procrastination is. Making the disasters, trials and tribulations into a fun and light hearted meme collection. Think Sex and the City and an agony aunt all nicely mixed together to create a page that keeps on supporting those questionable life choices.

h t i w Go w o l F the Have you ever performed an activity and it seemed effortless, time flew by, and you were entirely in the moment? This is called “flow”, and it’s vital if you want to perform at your best.

For the world’s top athletes and elite performers, getting themselves into a “flow state” is essential for peak performance. But you don’t have to be Serena Williams or Elon Musk to access “flow.” We can all learn techniques to get ourselves into this state.

SO, WHAT IS HAPPENING WHEN WE ARE IN A FLOW STATE? Improvements in brain imaging have allowed us to better understand what is happening in the brain when in a flow state. There has always been this idea that we only use a small percentage of our brain when performing activities. Research points to the opposite; there seems to be a reduction in the prefrontal cortex’s activity. In addition to this, there are several neurotransmitters released. Neurotransmitters are the body’s chemical messengers used by the nervous system to transmit messages between neurons. l DOPAMINE – Enhances the ability to analyse and recognise patterns.

54

Improves the speed and efficiency of problem-solving. Increases heart rate, muscle force and rate of contraction. It drives us to take risks and try new activities. It is talked about as the most addictive neurotransmitter. l NOREPINEPHRINE – Increases awareness and arousal. This is known as a focusing neurotransmitter, as it decreases the chance of us being distracted. l ENDORPHINS – Increase the pleasure in the experience and also is a pain inhibitor. l ANANDAMIDE – increases positive mood and helps with problem-solving by improving lateral thinking. l SERATONIN – increases the feeling of well-being and happiness at the end of the state and improves cognition, memory and learning. Such changes in brain activity and levels of neurotransmitters can affect selfconsciousness, understanding of time, and the feeling of effortlessness and richness in the environment around us.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

How do you access flow states? There are some clear ways to get into a flow state:

1

COMPLETE CONCENTRATION

When was the last time that you were 100% concentrated on one task and, for a time, only focused on that task? Nowadays, this is nearly impossible unless we set up the right environment to help with this. So, keep phones and other distractions out of sight.

2

CLEAR GOALS

We all set goals, but we must make sure that they are clear and specific. Lack of understanding of what needs to be done leads to lack of success.

3

CHALLENGE/SKILL BALANCE

This is the hardest pre-conditioning in my mind. We need to find the task challenging enough to drive dopamine and motivations but not too much to become anxious.

4

THE EXPERIENCE IS INTRINSICALLY REWARDING

This can be a difficult one to understand for many people. Think about the different activities that drive massive amounts of flow – skiing, surfing, playing a musical instrument – as based on intrinsic rewards. From a work standpoint, it’s the idea of purpose and whether the job is fulfilling. Another point to understand is that there are actually different flow states - from micro to macro. Micromoments can be day-to-day short periods when we access the state to enable us to be more productive. Then we have the macro-moments; these fantastic experiences in our lives, like skiing full-throttle down a mountain, catching a wave, completing an incredible project, giving a fantastic presentation. Have a go at trying to get yourself into a flow state, whether at work, in the gym, or at home and see how much more productive you are.

REMEMBER, FLOW STATES C AN BE QUITE TAXING ON THE BODY, SO ENSURE THAT YOU MAKE TIME FOR REST AND RECOVERY AFTERWARDS.

Summer is truly here and of course, as we wear less we can become a little more conscious about our bodies. It can be really tempting to go for the latest fad diet book, skinny supplement or juice based programme - but please don’t!

FEEL-GOOD FEEL-GOODFACTOR FACTOR

Where we go wrong is expecting to lose the weight fast. The thing is you didn’t put on half a stone in a week (most likely) so why are you expecting to lose it as fast? Instead of wrecking your metabolism with approaches like this, invest in educating yourself in nutrition so you have the tools to manage your own body for life. Once you have the basics nailed you can make consistently good choices. Yes you can do diets until the cows come home, but that’s not helping you take charge of your health, or educating you to make good choices over the long term. If you want to lose body fat creating a calorie deficit of around 500 calories a day will equate to around 1-2lbs of fat loss per week for most people. That’s steady and sustainable and doesn’t have you battling cravings on a restrictive diet.

You don’t even have to eat 500 calories less - there are 2 sides to the energy equation - so eat 250 less and move 250 more… It’s slow and steady BUT, importantly, is sustainable, and you’re body will thank you for this approach over “shock and awe”. You can boost your metabolism with certain workout protocols that take no time at all. Things like short and effective HIIT sessions coupled with resistance training (to add muscle - makes you look better and increases the metabolism) a few times a week will get you the results you’re looking for. It’s about big results with minimal sacrifices to look and feel great inside and out.

So next time you’re tempted to go for the latest fad diet, miracle supplement, juice or shake solution, please don’t. Stop. Think. Reach out and find the sustainable long term solution that empowers you and leaves you happy and hitting your body goals,

There were shots, there was dancing, a DJ & ecstatic energy but this party was at 9.30 am and it was pocket-style! There have been many “Boho -Booty” workshops but this one was the first of its kind presenting the “Pilates Party”. Not being one for the typical Marbs party scene I wanted to organise a party with a difference. A party where you hit the highs minus the lows of the morning after, and a party that didn’t jeopardise those golden 8-hours of snooze.

opportunities to allow creativity to alight and this one was tribal! Feather garlands, pleated hair, Aztec prints & earthy tones were the vibe for this affair and there were heaps of sass to match the dress.

FEEL INTRIGUED? I’M NOT SURPRISED LET’S SEE WHAT WE GOT UP TO ...

9.30 am mats were laid in the infamous hut and it was time for morning shots courtesy of @ beeimmune ... A natural kick to boost energy before the 90-minute journey for both our bodies & mind.

Dressing up isn’t just for kids, period. Fancydress helps us to escape from the norm, or simply take a break from the mundane, it’s a chance to connect with our inner-child, (or restrained wild-woman). Themes are

It’s healthy to try new activities, and the start of the workshop was most definitely that! We divided in deep with a shaking meditation, (yes your read right) designed to get everyone out of their heads and into their body’s.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

You might laugh at the thought and yes there were plenty of those, but shaking is, in fact, a super-powerful practice that has been used for centuries in many traditions. Shaking is the ultimate stress-buster and can help individuals reach ecstatic states. The simplicity of shaking has even been linked to healing emotional traumas and serious illnesses so it’s no wonder it was a hit! Once all the shakes had been released the hut entered a moment of absolute stillness, a moment of pure presence where all you could notice was the heavy beat of your heart and rhythm of the breath. Stagnant energy and built up emotion had been released and mental clarity was found. This was the perfect time to begin the practice.

In Pilates balance and ultimate wellbeing is what we want to achieve in every sense of the word, that’s why this class had it all, no muscle was left untouched. Core-work which left us feeling sore, endurance exercises putting both muscles and minds to the test, leg work resulting in jelly limbs & post stretches leaving fascia light. After moving as one and breaking a sweat, tribal make-up melting down our cheeks it was time to bring the practice to a close, a time to collectively take a moment, a chance to soften and let go of any final gripping muscles. Well exercised bodies can go deeper when in “shavasana” (corpse pose) the most advance of all yoga postures. The goal is to obtain pure

stillnesses and be reborn post- practice with a new lighter self.

WE ARE NOT SLEEPING, NOR ARE WE DREAMING, WE ARE JUST STILL... After a few self-serving minutes, entering back into our bodies and the room, it was time for final refreshments. Exotic juices, rainbow fruit platters and a blueberry-flavoured, protein-filled and toffee-covered banana cake that was gluten-free and vegan too! If you want to go to an event that leaves your booty raw, your heart warm & belly full then come & join me at the next “Pilates Party” @Playapadre on Saturday 28th August 9.30-11.30am

T HOU G HTF U L LU X URY an art form By Katherine Brook

There’s something about a perfectly designed space that’s so captivating. The way the colour scheme flows effortlessly from the furniture to the accessories; the beauty of shapes and textures layered upon each other. It truly is a form of art, and when done just right, has the ability to make you feel calm yet intrigued. That’s exactly how I felt after looking at Rina Rankova’s recent work. The Bulgarian born interior designer has been turning heads in the industry, using her expertise to create unique spaces, attentively considering every last detail. Rina Rankova at Flamma, Puente Romano

Interior design is more than just a job for Rankova, it’s her passion, her joy, and this shines through in every aspect of her work.

86

Well-travelled, Rankova studied design and interior architecture in London, spending time at both the University of Arts London and KLC School of Design. During her time in the big smoke, she worked at Argent Design, gaining a wealth of experience in high-end residential design, commercial, and custom furniture design. Next, her curiosity took her to Dubai, where she set up her first design studio, Pheonixstowe.

She spent four years at the studio transforming the homes of the Middle East but after meeting her husband in 2018, decided to settle down in none other than the gem of the south coast, Marbella. Here, she set up another boutique studio, Rina Rankova, which has offices in both Marbella and London. Over the last three years, Rankova’s made quite the name for herself, working with clients like Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay, new FLAMMA restaurant in Puente Romano, luxury developments in Dubai, a Grade II listed building in Mayfair, and most recently, La Fontana, a collection of five new, architecturally curated villas, developed by Sir John Beckwith and Penna Property Partners, in Sierra Blanca. Situated in the foothills of the UNESCO protected La Concha mountain, each villa boasts panoramic views and has been designed to bring something a little different than the white-washed walls of the usual Costa del Sol style. Roofs are adorned with Moroccon and Arabic tiles and inside the decor is elegant and timeless.

Sourcing materials from all over the world and working with only the best tradesmen she creates pieces to the exact taste of the client and project.

Large windows allow sunshine to flood each room, casting a warm glow throughout. No villa is the same, some have guest houses while others have courtyards. But one thing that’s common throughout are grand, open living spaces, designed for hours socialising with family and friends, as is typical in Spanish culture. Rankova’s main point of difference is that everything she does is bespoke. Sourcing materials from all over the world and working with only the best tradesmen she creates pieces to the exact taste of the client and project. Her style is distinctive yet effortless, contemporary yet chic. She balances aesthetics and functionally to create elegant spaces from opulent villas to award-winning restaurants. From conception to completion, Rankova and her team of talented interior architects, designers and 3D visualisers manage everything themselves, including site management, construction, fit-out, and dressing. She leaves no stone unturned. Beds are dressed in the finest sheets and soft cotton towels are hung in the bathrooms; kitchens are filled with the latest pots,

‘communication and execution of projects effortless, no matter the location or nationality of the client’.

Rankova carefully contemplates textures, lighting, colour palettes and accessories so that when everything is finished, the client can move in immediately.

Interior design is more than just a job for Rankova, it’s her passion, her joy, and this shines through in every aspect of her work.

With such an international footprint, Rankova’s lucky to have a team that speaks a variety of languages including Spanish, English, French and Arabic, which she says helps to make the

The Perfect Bedroom Sometimes a word outgrows its definition. A bedroom, the dictionary tells us, is a room for sleeping in, but these days it needs to do a lot more than that. Article by Vivion O’Kelly. Images from Vista Lago Residences, courtesy of BRIGHT.

ong gone are the days when the average bedroom was furnished with a bed and a wardrobe and little else. In our time, just as the kitchen has become a second living space, the bedroom has become a third living space used at any time of the day and night for a multiplicity of purposes. This makes it one of the most important rooms in the house.

Well, maybe not the last, but things have not changed all that much in concept. As Jason Harris, CEO and Creative Director of UDesign, says: “The bedroom is now like any other space in the house. If you design and decorate it purposefully, then it can be another room in the house where you can do a lot more than just sleep.”

“WE TRY TO CREATE A LUXURY HOTEL SUITE FEEL TO THE BEDROOM.” A look at some of the bedrooms designed by UDesign in the new luxury Vista Lago development, located high in the hills above Marbella, shows us exactly what he is talking about. We immediately see one big difference from days gone by: the huge windows. While natural light is essential in any bedroom, the spectacular views from each of the individually designed villas makes window size even more essential. In Vista Lago they are genuinely floor-to-ceiling and in some design configurations, wall-to-wall, sliding back into the walls at the flick of a switch. They all open out into terraces, where the first early-morning tea or coffee can be taken when the weather obliges. Inside the room, better described as a suite, the view is also not bad. This is a place for allowing the imagination to soar, and as in all aspects of a Vista Lago villa, the client has the last say in interior design. Artworks of choice hang on the

Gone are the days when it was thought that interior design was just a pompous expression for good taste in decorating a space and that it was a reserved luxury for the elite. Nowadays, there are more and more people who realize the true importance of creating a home that embodies their lifestyle, personality, style and values.

O

ver a number of years, usually with a lot of thought and considerable dedication, we choose furniture, art, rugs, vases and so on into a distinctive constellation we mark with the word home. As we create our rooms, we reflect profoundly on the atmosphere of a picture, we ponder the relationship between the colours on a wall and we ask with care what books really deserve our ongoing attention. As a result, with time, what our homes are helping us remember is, strangely enough, ourselves. We can see this need to anchor identity in the history of religion, as humans have from the earliest of days expended enormous care and creativity on building homes for their gods. They haven’t felt that their gods could live just anywhere, but that they needed special places where their specific characteristics could be stabilised through art and architecture.

in contact with ourselves, away from a fast paced and over-stimulating exterior world. Creating a home is frequently such a demanding process because it requires us to find our way to objects that can correctly convey our identities. We may have to go to enormous efforts to track down what we deem to be the ‘right’

I

REASONS WHY INTERIOR DESIGN IS IMPORTANT

FUNCTION AND BEAUTY

On the most basic level, a good interior design improves a space by making it better suited to its purpose. For example, if designing a bedroom you will make decisions that lead to it being more relaxing, and for an office, good design will make it more focused and efficient. When a space is well-designed, it doesn’t just look good - great design goes beyond to ensure that everything in the room serves a function.

II

We get fussy because objects are, in their own way, all hugely eloquent. In this sense, two chairs that perform much the same physical role can articulate entirely different visions of life. The smallest things in our homes whisper in our ears, they offer us encouragement, reminders and comfort, as we go about making breakfast or unwinding in the evening. This quest to build a home is connected up with a need to stabilise and organise our complex selves. It’s not enough to know who we are in our own minds. We need something more tangible, material and sensuous to pin down the diverse and intermittent aspects of our identities. Home means the place where our soul feels that it has found its proper physical container, where, every day, the objects we live amongst quietly remind us of our most authentic commitments, loves and true selves.

Similarily, our homes are also our temples – they are our temples to us. A place that adequately embodies our values, merits, experiences and puts us back

3

objects for particular functions, rejecting hundreds of alternatives that would – in a material sense – have been perfectly serviceable, in the name of those we believe can faithfully communicate the right message about who we are.

INTERIOR DESIGN WITH A SOUL

Another thing that interior designers understand about their art is the ways in which you’ve decorated your space allows you to show your personality. Think about the last time you had visitors to your home, or when you saw a friend’s home for the first time. What can others learn about you from your space? What have you observed about others from theirs? Whether designing a living space or a commercial office, interior designers carefully consider the message that a

space sends. Great design enhances the good qualities that a person, family, or company already possesses, giving them a tangible form in space.

III

MAXIMIZING SPACE

Finally, working with an interior designer is a wonderful way to get the most out of your space. A smart designer will find ways to make your space flow easily and to make your life more convenient. Plus, a great design will be tailored to your exact lifestyle and needs - a designer won’t make the same choices for a newlywed couple that they would for a family of five. In each case, they will work with the space in a way that best suits their client

The Psychology of Colour in Interior Design Have you ever considered why you feel more relaxed after spending time in a neutral, light space? Or energised after being in a colourful, vibrant room? It’s probably largely down to colour psychology - the connection between our emotions and colour. The psychology of colour is a fascinating subject and a powerful interior design tool that impacts the mood

of a room more so than any other factor. Interior designers understand the power of colour and use it thoughtfully to subtly influence how a room makes you feel, so, whether you’re looking to add a pop of colour with accessories or decorate your entire home, keep reading to discover the pyschological effect of colour in interior design!

Red Red is the most vibrant colour that represents emotions in their entirety. Whether it’s dark shades like maroon or light shades of ham red, imprementing the colour red in a design plan adds excitement and vigor to the entire room. You can use red in offices, in the living room and in the bedroom. When used in the living room, red in all its shades inspires friendship and stimulates conversation, whilst in the bedroom the colour red kindles feelings of love, desire and passion. Red also inspires feelings of anger and revenge, which is why it is best to combine with calming tones like white or beige to balance the human emotion. Above: Noonu sofa designed by Antonio Citterio inspired in the atolls of Maldives for B&B Italia

Yellow Yellow is synonimous with sunshine, thereby spreading the effect of happiness and positivity. Whether it’s mustard, lemon or baby yellow, this colour is also associated with intellect and prosperity, due to its close association with the colour gold. In interior design, yellow is recommended for the kitchen and dining areas (as it is known to increase appetite), children’s bedrooms, and bathrooms. Like so many bright tones, it can be tricky to make work in a room from top to bottom, but statement yellow furniture and bold yellow accessories make for beautiful styling. Right: Porcelain Tableware from Gucci’s 2021 Decor Collection.

Pink Underestimated as a colour only to be used in girls’ rooms, pink is a delicate hue in colour psychology which speaks of nurture, love and feminity. Its tones are comforting making it a favourite for bedrooms, but it can easily be transferred to living room schemes if executed well. Vibrant shades of pink such as fuchsia or coral make a statement when combined with secondary colours such as aqua or light blue, but you can also complement pink with natural hues and vibrant tones of red and white for form and function. Purple

“Purple carries a

regal charm and also suggests luxury which enables the tone to bring real presence to a space”

The colour purple is usually associated with elegance and royalty, and purple colour schemes work well in areas that inspire creativity and design. Bright hues of purple such as violet or plum add flair to a design scheme, whereas lighter shades such as lavender and mauve create a calm but regal effect in a space. Since purple inspires creativity, it can be added in dressing rooms, walk in closets, in-house art studios or even the kitchen.

“From emerald and jade to olive and

Green

lime, green is a beautiful colour in its many forms”

Green is a powerful colour in interior design, as it’s an extremely versatile colour. While light and aqua green have a calming effect, olive green is recognized worldwide for peace and harmony. Suitable for almost any room in the house, the colour green stimulates thoughts of balance, growth and restoration in colour psychology. It immediately brings the natural world to mind, and encourages unwinding but has enough warmth to promote comfort and togetherness. It makes an ideal wall colour in spaces you need to open your mind such as kitchens and home offices, and, as it’s closely linked to money, it’s a sensible choice for incorporating in business properties! Brown

White

Grey

With its natural hue and soft, reassuring essence, brown tends to relax the senses, maybe a little too much, leading to inactivity and lack of goals, so it’s best used sparingly. However, in combination with vibrant shades and other natural hues, brown can symbolize resilience and security. In interior design, brown is used abundantly when it is meant to create a rustic look and somber atmosphere. Although elegant, the colour has a tendency to evoke depression, so ensure that you combine it with happy colours such as white, yellow, red, green and orange.

White is the universal neutralizer which is associated with peace, cleanliness and tranquility. This is why spa facilities, Japanese architecture and Scandinavian cultures implement white in abundance. White, in all its shades, serves as a blank canvas to implement different design schemes, and it can be used throughout any part of a house as it seemingly increases the visual space and reduces tension.

Grey is a neutral colour that is highly associated with elegance and style. Although there is some controversy as to the effects of grey on the human mind, if used correctly, it can have quite a positive effect. In both its warm and cool version, grey can be used as a neutralizer for vibrant colour schemes, evoking feelings of calm and security. As with any colour, the results depend largely on how you make use of the hue, as it can be soft and delicate or strong and confident. If you do use it as a dominant room colour, make sure to introduce plenty of natural light to make the space feel more welcoming and warm! Left: Side table in anthracite grey ceramic designed by Paola Navone for Gervasoni Outdoor.

Blue Blue is among the most calming colours in the palette for interior design. In regards to the psychological effects of colour, blue is the only colour that has an array of positive effects, and little to no negative effects on the psyche, as it relaxes the mind and slows down heart rate. Most dark shades of blue such as navy and royal blue are associated with elegance, luxury, confidence and are associated with admirable qualities such as loyalty, trust, peace and success. Lighter shades of the colours, especially in aquatic hues, instil a feeling of calm and at home which makes them great for bedrooms, bathrooms and living spaces where you want to relax. The perfect balance between the MANMADE & NATURE We look inside the splendid Villa Alkaana, a UDesign home where the true value of minimalist architecture and design is taken to a new level.

iews don’t get much better than Estepona’s Sierra Bermeja mountains behind and the Mediterranean Sea in front. Add proximity to Marbella, a villa designed and built in luxury minimalism by UDesign, and you have a dream home in one of the best locations in the world.

We can see it from the end of the front lawn, reflected in the glass walls of the villa, and from the inside, every room has the same view of the sea looking outwards. The wide-angled ground plan ensures that residents look out on both the distant views and towards each other, which would be impossible in

either a purely rectangular or a rightangled ground plan. Architecturally, the structure is a fairly simple arrangement in glass and white lines; a long line of rooftop with two balconies beneath,

98

PRIVACY IS A KEY ELEMENT OF THE DESIGN one supported by a rectangular arch and the other cantilevered, creating just the right amount of asymmetry within the wide expanse of glass. While the glass reflects the distant landscape from the lawn, the house itself is reflected in the pool as one gets closer, and if there appears to be something missing, it could be a more intimate garden in the front. But that’s because the garden, as opposed to lawn, is inside the villa. “Even when you’ve got amazing views like this,” says Jason Harris, CEO and Creative Director of UDesign, “it’s nice to have an interior garden. It means you can enjoy the views both inside and out, in all directions. We always want that natural element in a house, and you don’t get more natural than an actual garden. At night, when the light fades and the mountains and sea views begin to disappear, the illuminated garden

comes into its own. There’s the sound of the water in the fountains, and although such a garden may not work in every architectural context, it works here. It gives a whole new dimension to the villa.” The indoor garden makes a splendid backdrop to the living area at any time of the day. One can sit right in it, chatting to a friend, or close to it, joining in a bigger conversation, or whisper to a deconstructed Venus de Milo when neither option is available. “The style and colours here are very earthy,” says Jason. “Black stone, brown sofas, rugs, sections of the walls, but with sparkles of gold in the coffee table and chandelier, creating a lovely mix that is comforting, not flashy in any way. It’s a living space that has been designed for living in, above all else.”

99

Home Couture

Interior design is as subtle an art form as architecture itself.

Jason goes on to speak about nature and its place inside a home. “No matter how hard we work as architects and designers, or how creative we think we might be, we cannot compete with nature itself. Nature is, almost by definition, a natural master of sculpture. It creates what we cannot: vegetation, water, stone and wood, and it makes sense to use what nature provides. We have used it here, in the interior design of the villa and the materials used, and in its raw state in the interior garden. It’s basically all a question of achieving the perfect balance between the manmade and nature.” The real olive tree in the kitchen tells us more about how philosophical words can sometimes translate into reality, if the sound of running water in the main sitting area or the scent of nature not purchased in aerosol form in a supermarket were not enough to convince.

100

Home Couture

One problem – aesthetically speaking – with open plan design is kitchens that look like kitchens, and the UDesign architects have long since solved it. Their kitchens form an essential element in the overall design of the living space, and they look anything but purely functional working areas. Such a concept is especially evident in this villa, where the true value of minimalist architecture is taken to a new level, as we can see from the images. As Jason says: “You don’t see appliances, ovens or anything else to remind you that this is, in fact, a bona fide kitchen, which it certainly is. Perhaps

the coffee pot on the counter gives us a clue. Everything you need is here, but it’s hidden from view. And the subtle design, with its play of contrasting dark lines on the wall behind and in the ceiling lights, and in the comfortable dining chairs, compensates for any perception of excessive minimalism. Interior design is as subtle an art form as architecture itself.” The villa is not small, but neither is it enormous, compared with many others UDesign have created. But it feels huge, partly the result of double-height ceilings in the main living area, because height always exaggerates ground plan space, and partly in the design of the floor-to-

ceiling glass walls that open the terraces into the villa’s interior. And partly through selection and quantity of furniture and fittings, where nothing obscures the views on offer. A magnificent villa in a magnificent landscape, designed and built to take full advantage of climate and views, designed for easy living. The intricacies of architectural and interior design philosophy are something we can all understand, and if, in the unlikely event there is somebody out there who doesn’t, no worries. The pictures alone tell the whole story.

Everything you need is here, but it’s hidden from view. 101

MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE MARC PHILIPP GEMBALLA MARSIEN

The desert can either be dead quiet or a very noisy place. The biggest noise is the howling winds that blow up a sand storm, and you really don’t want to be around when one of those is brewing. Today however, the loudest noise echoing across the spectacular barren landscape of the Al Faya desert in the Emirate of Sharjah is made by a turbocharged Porsche flat-six. Distantly related to the naturally-aspirated, 4WD 953 that won the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally, it is a distinctly alien sound to these shifting red sands that would make a perfect backdrop for a movie about Mars. The epicentre of this melodious mechanical soundtrack hoves into view, appearing to float above the sand as it heads straight for us on full throttle, the distinctive Porsche 992 four-point daytime running lights and the rooster tail of sand following in the cars wake creating a surreal apparition. This becomes an even more riveting sight as the soft orange light of the setting sun backlights the airborne sand, each particle seemingly alive as it plies a course back to the desert floor. The sparkling white car blasts past and upshifts, short flames momentarily shooting from its two

104 104

big exhaust outlets on the over-run. In a flashback image the rapidly departing rear view is reminiscent of the famous 959 Rally car, albeit squatter and more angular in a 21st Century way. Cresting a nearby sand dune, the cars nose rises and falls, and for a moment the reflected sunlight highlights its flat bottom, a stout full-length aluminium undertray designed to protect the mechanicals from the terrain. The car circles round and stops beside the waiting support team. The driver kills the engine and shattering silence returns to the desert. The Marsien has arrived, the very first car from Marc Philipp Gemballa’s new company. Growing up around exotic cars with a genuine passion for cars in general it was Marc Philipp Gemballa’s ambition to follow in his late father’s footsteps. But it was always going to be question of opportunity and timing.

Many of his father’s old clients and friends told Marc that the Gemballa name means so much to them and they wanted to see him follow in Uwe’s footsteps. More than that, some of these old clients said they would invest in the company should he choose to come up with an exciting project and a credible business plan.

“I started seriously thinking about this project in 2018 at the time I left Aston Martin Europe,” Marc recalls. “I began my background research by visiting many of my father’s old friends around the world from California to Saudi Arabia.”

Knowing that he needed to find a distinctive house style for this and future cars Marc began to cast around for a new design language that he liked. The light bulb moment came when he saw the 908-04 Concept car penned by French stylist Alan Derosier, which had been well received by both the Porsche community and Porsche itself.” WAS

“I KNEW I NEEDED TO DO SOMETHING SPECIAL THAT COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM THE USUAL AFTERMARKET TUNERS OR ELSE I WOULD NOT START AT ALL,” he says. There are so many supercars and hypercars on sale now with everyone running in the same direction that he did not want to be responsible for the next me-too supercar. Many enthusiasts were talking about the Paris-Dakar Rally era, and SCRS replicas based on G-Series 911s had become popular after the Carrera RS back-dating fad had slowed down. “But these cars were still rear-wheeldrive so I thought that basing a car on a contemporary 4WD 911 Turbo S would be more interesting,” said Marc. Simply putting a ducktail on a 991 or 992 and increasing its ride height was neither radical nor special enough. This seeded the idea of a street legal 911 that could be equally at home in the desert or in Beverley Hills. “I wanted to create the ultimate street legal adventure sports car,” said Marc emphatically. “I put the idea to my potential investors who loved it, and suddenly we were off to the races.”

“One of the hardest jobs for any stylist is reinterpreting the design language of a very strong and distinctive marque like the Porsche,” Marc explained. “To my mind Alan nailed the Porsche DNA perfectly with his 908-4 Concept, and this was the design language that inspired me for our new car.” “I had a phone conversation with Alan in July 2018, and he began preliminary work,” said Marc, retracing the early steps of the design stage. “We arranged to meet at Pebble Beach in August by which time Alan had the first design sketches ready to show me.” These early sketches were convincing enough to get all of the future partners on board as well as investor funding. Some of these people also helped to set up the organisation required for this mammoth undertaking. With all these building blocks now in place the new partners pushed the ‘go’ button in late 2019. But as with so many things, the world came to a grinding halt with the onset of COVID-19, and the plan to unveil the concept model at the 2020 Geneva Auto Salon was scuppered.

“Our car had to be based on the latest platform,” said Marc. “With the debut of the 992 Carrera in early 2019 the 992 Turbo was not far behind, so it made sense to wait for the new car.”

rally cars. Marc also signed up Akrapovic, whose titanium exhaust systems are used by Porsche on some of their GT/RS models, while the high performance on and offroad tyres are Michelin.

This new front suspension consists of a subframe to carry the new lower arms, while the pickup points for the new upper arms are located on a bespoke carrier plate glued and welded to the inner wings.

“Using the working name ‘Project Sandbox’ for the concept car I began discussions with potential technical partners,” Marc recounted. Alois Ruf, whom I recall provided the 375hp BTR engine conversion for the Avalanche back in the mid-1980s quickly came on board, as did KW Automotive the world class suspension experts for road, race and

A clear indication of how seriously Marc takes the off-road ability of his Marsien is shown by the huge investment in the design and manufacturing of an all-new forged aluminium double wishbone front suspension system required by the severe vertical and lateral forces of offroad driving.

Bespoke coil-over KW solid piston dampers with external fluid reservoirs and their Hydraulic Lift System (HLS) facilitate the vehicles ground clearance, which goes from 115mm to 250mm. The dampers utilise KW’s hydraulic DDCC (Dynamic Damping & Chassis Control) system, with the lower part of the damper containing the hydraulic components.

107

TORQUE TORQUE TALK TALK

As this 250mm number seemed familiar I consulted the story I once wrote on the Paris-Dakar Porsches and found that the Marsien’s highest ride height exactly mirrors the fixed 250mm ground clearance of Porsche’s 1986 Group B rally car. In parenthesis the air suspension of the current Cayenne provides 245mm of ground clearance in its highest position. KW developed a semi-active system with sensors that automatically adjusts the ride height and damper settings according to the terrain when Offroad mode is selected. The Porsche Drive Mode selector on the steering wheel normally allows the driver to select Sport, Sport + and Wet. This has been modified with extra settings for sand and snow as well as gravel roads where you don’t need 250mm of ground clearance. The standard Porsche Turbo S steel brakes are used because the PCCB ceramic discs are too large to fit behind the 19-inch off-road front wheels. They are also not suitable for off road work as getting between these race style discs and pads would cause expensive damage. MPG developed everything apart from the brakes for their new front end. “This was the biggest technological challenge of all,” Marc recalled. “But this work paid off, and in desert trials the car’s driving capabilities significantly surpassed our expectations.” Next the team also had to find appropriate footwear for their desert stormer. The wheel and tyre size needed to be in the specific ratio of 5.5% between front and rear to prevent damage to the complex Porsche 4WD system. The engineers had to do a lot of research to find the right size tyres with these ratios to fit the 19-inch front wheels used for the off-road set, which have much taller sidewalls than is fashionable on current supercars. Each Marsien comes with two sets of centre-lock forged alloy wheels and tyres for on and off-road use. The offroad wheels are 8.5J x 19-inch and 9.0J x 20-inch, shod with 235/55R19 and 255/55R20 Michelin All-Terrain rubber. For tarmac work the wheel diameters are an inch larger at 9.0J x 20-inch and 12.0J x 21-inch, wrapped

in 255/35ZR20 and 315/30ZR21 low profile Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres. You can never have too much power, but as this is an off-road capable car whose tall ride height denies it the aerodynamic ground effect of a normal supercar the RUF fettled motor is capped at 750hp, its breathing enhanced by the bespoke Akrapovic titanium exhaust system that features a unique tailpipe design. Of course there will always be those who want more, so a Stage 2 upgrade using a pair of larger turbochargers and ECU remap for 830hp is also on offer. Either way the engine is protected by a pair of special sand filters from BMC in Italy to keep the desert sand and dust out of the intake. It is also important to keep any sand that enters the front bumper intakes from building up in the underbody tray so there are outlets in the underbody, which worked very well during desert testing.

wings have been replaced with new carbon-fibre panels along with the front and rear bumpers. The alloy door skins are removed and replaced with carbon-fibre panels. The steel door frames and side intrusion bars remain unchanged, again for crash safety homologation reasons. The steel rear wings are precisely removed using a laser cutter and replaced by bespoke carbon-fibre rear panels. These are glued and screwed and then bonded to the original passenger safety cell. The original pillars are covered in carbonfibre to change their shape where required and this further reinforces the cars roll-over protection.

That said, while the finished car tips the scales at around the same weight as the stock 992 Turbo S, the lower centre of gravity at normal ride height aids stability when the car is riding at its higher levels. There is a story behind the unique white paint applied to the Marsien prototype that goes back to the one-off matt pearl white that Marc’s father created for Sheikh Al Thani’s Mirage GT. Marc always loved that colour, so he mixed it with Bugatti metallic flakes and added high gloss clear lacquer for a deep lustrous finish that really sparkles in the sunlight. While the Marsien retains the steel passenger cell and main structure for crash safety testing reasons, all the steel and aluminium panels like the roof, bonnet, rear lid and front

Owners who need a rear seat can simply omit the optional Porsche Clubsport roll cage. However, if you do tick the box for this steel cage it can be wrapped in carbon-fibre, another official Porsche option. The base cars will come from official dealers in each client’s country of origin and be sent to the MPG HQ in Leonberg, Germany for the conversion to be carried out. This helps to maintain a good relationship with Porsche and its local dealer network so that everyone comes out a winner.

The list price is 495,000 Euro plus local taxes on top of the base Turbo S. The first 10 cars of the 40 limited edition cars are a special launch edition with a higher standard equipment level. Out of the starting blocks the Marc Philip Gemballa Marsien is an epic achievement. But then Marc Philipp was born with Gemballa DNA, so epic comes with the territory. As for the name ‘Marsien’, French for ‘Martian’, this was an epiphany that came about during filming of ‘Project Sandbox’ in April this year in the red environment that evoked images of what the surface of Mars must be like. Sometimes things just fall into place.

y the time you read this, the founder and former CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, will likely have been to space aboard a rocket built by one of his side-hustles, Blue Origin. The venture, slated for July 20th (the 52nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing no less) marks a culmination of two decade’s work which should see the richest man on Earth become the richest man in orbit. Though he’d be unlikely to admit it, the experience may have been somewhat tarnished by the fact fellow rich guy Richard Branson beat him to it... by 9 days. Launching from New Mexico aboard the Virgin Galactic Unity 22 space plane on July 11th, the permasmiling Virgin boss got to experience zero gravity for a few minutes whilst the rest of us earthbound losers finally got to witness the effects of weightlessness on a dyedblond mullet (alas Peter Stringfellow never made it to the final frontier...) Though not the first “average joe” in

124

To hoard more money than you can ever spend whilst people starve around you is not just insensitive, it’s pathological. space, Branson’s foray marked the first high-profile manned flight of the new commercial space race, as Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic and Elon Musk’s SpaceX all seek to redefine off-world travel for a commercial market. It’s also the most out-of-this-world thing he’s done since Virgin Care sued the NHS for £82 million for not awarding them a lucrative contract. Ahhhhh, lovely, smiley, man of the people Richard Branson. Space is never not impressive and the live streamed event was no doubt inspiring to many, but the cynical couldn’t help but see it for the billionaire pissing contest it resembled. It’s not unprecedented. In the mid oughties,

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and the CEO of software giant Oracle, Larry Ellison further exercised their well documented, intense rivalry and fragile masculinity through the commissioning of private super yachts. Once Allen had ordered his 416-ft Octopus, Ellison, presumably excited by the thrill of competition, got a hull extension, engorging his.. ahem... Rising Sun from 387 to 452-ft. Fittingly, he didn’t hold onto the $270 million vessel for long, apparently losing interest / throwing a tanty when the Crown Prince of Dubai (a place where men routinely attempt to out-phallic one another with ever-bigger superstructures) flopped out his recordbreaking 525-ft Platinum. Ellison soon sold his floating metaphor on to another middle aged, white male (presumably not on Gumtree). Oh boys. Though the stated goals may be loftier than just “popping corks and banging chicks in Monaco”, the billionaire space race still smacks of egocentricity and a level of tone-deafness to the world around us exemplified by the very notion of a billionaire. To quote Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who probably doesn’t own a boat but kicks all kinds of ass: “No one ever makes a billion dollars. You take a billion dollars” As we reckon with a global pandemic and ongoing climate crisis which only serve to exacerbate the

heinous levels of economic inequality we already experience, it seems gross to idolise such accumulation and ostentatious displays of wealth by the few. To hoard more money than you can ever spend whilst people starve around you is not just insensitive, it’s pathological. In 2017 and 2018, any one of more than 100 million Amazon Prime users (then – it’s double now and i’m one of them) paid more for their annual subscription than the entire company paid in federal income Tax. In truth, you’d pay more for a penny sweet than they paid in federal income tax because they paid sweet fuck all. In fact, despite yearly income in the double figure billions, through clever use of tax credits, deductions and incentives, Amazon received federal tax refunds totalling $266 million – that should cover the accountant bills! In 2019, there was progress as Bezos’s baby relinquished a crippling.... 1.2% tax – I’m

sure they’ll survive. In fact, thanks to the pandemic shaking things up, the company have seen profits grow by 220% and put Bezos back at the top of the rich list after his $38 billion divorce settlement left him all but destitute. Some people get a fancy new haircut after a break-up. That’s not really an option for Bezos, so evidently he picked going to space instead. Musk’s M.O. With SpaceX is ultimately to establish “alternatives” to Earth on Mars, should something cataclysmic happen to this planet. It’s hard not to feel like the cataclysm could come in some large part from Bezos and co who were discovered in June to have been destroying upwards of 130,000 items per week from just one of many, many fulfilment centres in the UK. Mobiles, Macbooks, home tech, 20,000 unused face masks....The majority of these items were brand new, still packaged,

More than 160,000 people signed a petition to refuse Bezos re-entry to Earth once he’s pissed off out of it.

just unsold or returned unwanted. Amazon’s business model determines it’s cheaper to dump them than store them or redistribute them more responsibly. Meanwhile hungry kids across England are home learning on mum’s mobile because they can’t afford the type of laptop Amazon throws away. Though the figures are disturbing, whistleblowers say this is simply the company norm, yet time and again responsibility for saving the planet is put on the individual, generally non-billionaire not to use plastic fucking straws. No doubt there are solutions to Earth’s environmental woes right here a bit of that billionaire cash could find but that’s just not as sexy as reaching for the stars. But just because you can leave Earth’s atmosphere, it doesn’t mean you can rise above playground mentality and the three big dogs have exchanged some thinly veiled public attempts to undermine each other which have merely served to undermine the grandeur of what they claim to be aiming for. Thankfully, the general, TAX PAYING public have responded in typically winning manner, with more than 160,000 people signing a petition to refuse Bezos re-entry to Earth once he’s pissed off out of it. Meanwhile, a pic of himself Sir Branson shared just hours before his voyage generated arguably more interest in the state of his dated kitchen cupboards than the fact he was about to launch into the ether. Nothing like a bit of good old-fashioned cupboard-based piss-taking to clip your wings. It didn’t stop him returning with this vominducing rhetoric.

“Imagine a world where people of all ages, all backgrounds from anywhere, of any gender, or any ethnicity, have equal access to space.” Let’s start with running water, hot food and living wages before we “all” jump in rockets. Fucking Billionaires.

If you’ve heard of the illustrious Dwine and Diblú, you’ll be expecting big things from the group’s latest Marbella addition, FLAMMA - and you won’t be disappointed. Known to many as the heart of the Golden Mile, the Mediterranean restaurant is situated in the Puente Romano Hotel, spread across two floors, a courtyard and even a lounge. The experience starts the moment you enter the grand building, with colourful artwork and modern low hanging lights capturing your attention as you make your way through the restaurant. This is - of course - all thanks to the fabulous interior designer, Rina Rankova, who has brought her impeccable taste, knowledge and extensive experience to the Costa del Sol, after working for high-end clients in London and Dubai. The Poési Home founder has combined traditional and contemporary architecture to create a bespoke look and feel that continues to delight the further you explore. The main colour theme is deep green and copper, with hints of white. Earthy but vibrant, classic but chic. Walls echo the same palette with washes of bronze that perfectly match the striking lights. The marble floors sparkle with a glossy finish and the bespoke furniture creates a symmetry in the restaurant that is soothing yet alluring. The bar on the first floor is lined with plants, nestled on top of a superior spirit collection (the wine has its own special area downstairs).

showcased by an array of cooking techniques like the robata grill, which adds a deep level of smokiness to many of his signature dishes.

Doors open wide either side of the restaurant, with the front towering over the bustling Puente Romano street while the back opens onto a lemon-tree-filled courtyard, lit up by fairy lights, with a water feature taking centre stage. Downstairs there’s an open kitchen where dining guests can watch head chef Juan Pedro Valera and his team hard at work. Though Spanish at heart, Valera has trained in many Michelin star restaurants around the world, including Restaurante Skina, AbaC, Ametsa and Rincon de Diego. Valera’s specially curated menu features only the most seasonal ingredients,

On the evening my friend and I dined, we were lucky enough to meet restaurant manager Leonardo Herrera, who helped us choose a selection of plates to try from the exquisite menu - as is common in the Mediterranean, the food is designed to be shared. We started with the carabinero carpaccio, delicately sliced and when coupled with the acidity of kimchi mayo and crunch of pistachios, provided a dish that had me wanting more. Next we tried a selection of skewers from the robata grill: chicken, beef and lamb. The tender chicken was accompanied by the restaurant’s delicious signature FLAMMA BBQ sauce, while the beef and lamb were left to sing for themselves when the quality is that good it needs no

support; in this case it was a simple light jus and some finely chopped chives. The skirt steak may have just been the best I’ve had on the south coast. Slightly charred from the grill, perfectly cooked and enjoyed with a traditional pipirrana, which made a nice change from the usual chimichurri.

FLAMMA is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates impeccable gastronomy, fine wines and beautiful interior design.

Interior Designer Rina Rankova

As a big fan of lamb I was very much looking forward to the slow cooked shank and it ticked all the boxes; tender, succulent, flavours perfectly balanced, and served with a mixture of seasonal vegetables. Our final dish was grilled octopus with a smokey red pepper romesco sauce, tender sprout salad and confit potatoes; each bite an explosion of salt, sweet and nuttiness. We were highly tempted to try the famous wagyu steak tartare as well, which comes with a truffled egg yolk, making it even more luxurious, or the wagyu sando, the king of all sandwiches, but that would have just been greedy - next time. There’s only one place to head after dinner and that’s to the lounge. Boasting a huge temperature-controlled wine cellar down one side of the room, this may just be my favourite area of the restaurant. The executive sommelier of the D-Wine group, Julio García, has chosen only the best wines, with 50% from Spain and 50% from different regions across the world. Garcia describes the selection as ‘thoughtful but playful, accessible but with something for serious wine lovers’. And with 500 wines on the menu (or maybe bible is more appropriate), there certainly are some truly remarkable bottles.

Garcia is only too happy to share his knowledge with guests, choosing them the perfect bottle of wine to accompany their meal or indeed, enjoy unashamedly in the lounge with the wonderful ambiance as company. For those who prefer something more refreshing there’s also an extensive cocktail list, each one made to the highest of standards, as is with everything in the FLAMMA restaurant. Whether you’re joining for drinks, dinner or both, FLAMMA is a mustvisit for anyone who appreciates impeccable gastronomy, fine wines and beautiful interior design. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll return again and again - if only to relax in the courtyard on a starry night, slowly making my way through the abundant wine list... and maybe a robata skewer or two. @flamma_marbella flammarestaurant.es
