PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Dancing in September Now that September is here, we can begin to look back on the summer and say confidently that it was one of the best yet. Not only was it one of the hottest the coast has ever seen, the parties, events and entertainment have been secondto-none and it looks like September is on track to continue with the calibre of celebrations. Some highlights from last month have to be the fabulous Jacksons concert at Puente Romano Hotel and BREATHE™’s ‘Over the Moon’ party at their rooftop venue, AIR™. As always, we were on hand to capture all the action and antics; turn to page 104 to re-live all the fun. Where you caught on camera? There is only one way to find out! Our cover star is of course, the one and only Mr. Brad Pitt who is back on our screens starring in Quentin Tarantino’s latest release, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie, which is currently showing at Cines Teatro Goya in Puerto Banus. On the subject of celebrities, this month’s celebrity news takes a closer look at the current Miley - Liam - Kaitlynn - Brody scandal, and we mean Kaitlynn, Brody’s ex-wife (who were apparently never married!) not Caitlyn, his father who famously transitioned, declined to attend his wedding and was married to Kardashian matriarch, Kris! Confused? Don’t worry we know it’s hard to keep up! Turn to page 32 for the pic of ‘that’ kiss and all the latest gossip. We always love to bring you an exclusive and this month is no different. Turn to page 128 to read our exclusive interview with Summer Crosley, ambassador of OCEANA, California’s non-profit ocean conservation organization. Plus, our favourite columnists are on hand to share their expertise with you; Delicias Gourmet Group are talking ‘Granizo’ cheese, Jonathan Yeadon looks at Afro hair and Elissa Goodman advises on how to lower your risk of a stroke. Well here’s to September; a month we can enjoy all the advantages of summer with a little less of the heat (we hope)! What’s not to love? ‘Til next time… Andy Clark

orn December 18th, 1963 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, William Bradley Pitt is the eldest of three children. His father, Bill Pitt, owned a trucking company and his mother, Jane Pitt, was a family counsellor. The family later settled in Springfield, Missouri where Brad showed an interest in activities such as swimming, acting, golf, tennis and debate. In 1982 he enrolled at The University of Missouri to study advertising and journalism, however he dropped out in his last semester to head to Los Angeles, just two credits shy of his college degree. In the hope of appeasing his parents, Brad claimed he was going to enrol in the Art Centre College of Design in Pasadena but instead he drove a limousine, chauffeuring strippers to parties and doing deliveries to pay the bills as he attempted to break into the acting world. After joining an acting class, he accompanied a friend to an audition with an agent and ended up being signed over his classmate, within seven months he had started receiving regular acting work and it all begun. Like most Pitt started out with television roles including Dallas, Another World, Growing Pains and Glory Days. The latter introduced him to Juliette Lewis, who he started dated and eventually moved in with. His big screen debut came in 1989 with the horror film, Cutting Class but it was his role as a sugar tongued hitchhiker who gets picked up by the two title characters in 1991’s Thelma and Louise that grabbed him universal attention and put him on the map as

I HAVE A HARD TIME WITH MORALS. ALL I KNOW IS WHAT FEELS RIGHT, WHAT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO ME IS BEING HONEST ABOUT WHO YOU ARE. MORALS I GET A LITTLE HUNG UP ON.

a sex symbol, despite the small size of the role. The Favor, Johnny Suede and Cool World followed before 1992’s A River Runs Through It, based on Norman McLean’s autobiography. Director, Redford later revealed he had chosen Pitt not because of the strength of his audition, but because he ‘had an inner conflict that was very interesting to me.’ The following year Pitt teamed up once again with his girlfriend, Juliette Lewis, for Kalifornia where he played the role of Early Grayce, a man who goes on a cross-country killing spree with his girlfriend. The couple broke up shortly after the filming creating a publicity disaster and the movie failed

in the box office. Comedy, Floyd, True Romance and Anne Rice’s Interview with a Vampire alongside Tom Cruise followed. It was his role in the gory thriller, Seven that introduced him to his relatively unknown co-star, Gwyneth Paltrow. The couple claimed it was love at first sight and became one of Hollywood’s hottest couples before calling it quits in 1997 for unknown reasons. Twelve Monkeys in 1995 won Pitt his first Golden Globe for best supporting actor and was nominated at the Academy Awards in the same category. He followed this with dark thriller, Sleepers in 1996, Devil’s Own alongside Harrison Ford and Seven Years in Tibet, a 70-million-dollar project that was met with mixed reviews. In 1998 Brad Pitt was set up by his agent with America’s sweetheart and Friends actress, Jennifer Aniston. They made their first public debut as a couple in 1999 at the Emmy Awards and went on to tie the knot in a lavish Malibu wedding in 2000. In 1999 Brad re-teamed with Seven director Fincher to make Fight Club before starring in British film, Snatch in 2000 with Benicio Del Toro and directed by Guy Richie. His successes continued with The Mexican alongside Julia Roberts before joining an all-star cast including George Clooney and Matt Damon in Steven Soderbergh’s remake of Ocean’s Eleven. He rejoined the cast for Ocean’s Twelve and Warner Bros. blockbuster Troy in 2004. His blockbuster success soared when he starred opposite Angelina Jolie in Mr. and Mrs Smith. The movie earnt more than 478 million dollars worldwide, much to do with the exploding sparks between Brad and Angelina. Brad and Jen officially split that year releasing a joint statement stating, “We would like to announce that after seven years together we have decided to formally separate. For those who follow these sorts of things, we would like to explain that our separation is not the result of any of the speculation reported by the tabloid media. The decision is the result of must thoughtful consideration. We happily remain committed and caring friends with great love and admiration for one another.’ In addition to the statement, Brad and Angelina both denied the relationship rumours yet later admitted the filming was where they ‘fell in love.’ In April 2005 Brad and Angelina were spotted vacationing together in Kenya before being featured in a W magazine

spread in July entitled, Domestic Bliss. The images depicted them as a happy couple which outraged #TeamJen fans globally. In January 2006, just three months after Brad and Jen’s divorce was finalised, Brangelina, as they had been named by the public, announced they were expecting their first baby, and Pitt legally adopted Angelina’s two adopted children, Maddox and Zahara. In 2006 the critically acclaimed Babel earned the actor another Golden Globe nomination which followed with Burn After Reading’s further two nominations and grossing more than 60 million at the box office. The nominations continued with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button winning three Academy Awards and an Oscar nod for Pitt. As a couple Brad and Angelina continued to extend their brood with the adoption of Pax from Vietnam in 2007 and followed this with the announcement they were expecting twins the following year. Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline were born in Nice, France in July 2007 and made their debut on the cover of People magazine a month later. They reportedly paid 14 million dollars for the images, making them the most expensive celebrity photographs ever taken and all proceeds were donated to the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. In 2013 Pitt won acclaim for his performance in World War Z and his work on 12 Years a Slave; the film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, the BAFTA for Best Film and the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama. Finally, after seven years together, Brad and Angelina announced their engagement in 2012 before marrying in a private ceremony in Château Miravel, France in 2014. Although the marriage was short lived with Jolie filling for divorce just two years later citing irreconcilable differences.

YOU CAN'T BE DIFFERENT FOR DIFFERENT'S SAKE, AND THIS DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK, BUT YOU HAVE TO SEPARATE YOURSELF FROM THE NORMAL READ. OF COURSE, IT HAS TO BE TRUTHFUL. IF IT'S NOT TRUTHFUL, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.

Despite his second marriage coming to an end, Brad has always had his career to rely on and this year he reconnected with Leonardo DiCaprio in Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. The film is currently showing at Cines Teatro Goya in Puerto Banus. To date the film has received positive reviews and been described as, Tarantino’s love letter to 60’s L.A.’ No doubt this is just another step in Brad Pitt’s Hollywood success story with many more triumphs to follow.

ormer One Direction star, Harry Styles, has respectfully declined the role as Prince Eric in the new The Little Mermaid remake according to reports. However, this didn’t stop false tweets incorrectly announcing he had agreed to do the role. The tweets were then later deleted, and it was revealed that while Styles is a fan of the project he had respectfully declined and won’t be starring alongside Halle Bailey in the movie. The movie had already received mixed attention following the announcement of Bailey as Ariel with #NotMyAriel trending on Twitter as people decried the casting of a black woman in a role that has been traditional known as a young girl with red-hair and white skin. Despite the negativity the 19-year-old singer and actress only had positive things to say revealing, “I feel like I’m dreaming, and I’m just grateful,” she explained, “I don’t pay attention to the negativity. I just feel like this role was something bigger than me and greater, and it’s going to be beautiful” Well said, Halle.

LUNARCY By Ian Greenland

somewhat bizarre news story recently captured the attention of the online community. It connected with news outlets and clickbait sites for a number of reasons, not the least of which were its utterly adorable, microscopically cute and virtually indestructible protagonists. On April 11, the spacecraft Beresheet (Genesis), a joint mission of nonprofit SpaceIL and government-owned Israel Aerospace Industries crashed into the moon, thus failing to become the first successful private lunar landing. It was subsequently revealed the crash was due to human error - the result of an erroneously input manual command which then caused a catastrophic chain reaction.... The equivalent of accidentally calling your AUNT something quite different when sending her a text, but with rockets and explosions instead of old lady gasps. In order to keep it small enough to piggyback a Falcon 9 rocket, Beresheet was designed without the backup systems which might subsequently have averted its failure. Irony lies in the purpose of the unsuccessfully delivered payload, itself a “backup” system for life on earth. Alongside NASA-supplied scientific instruments, US nonprofit the Arch Mission Foundation had included a 30 million-page digital library of human knowledge onboard the vessel which included the entirety of the english-language Wikipedia (hope they made their £2 donation!!) alongside thousands of novels, children's drawings, the Torah, Israeli national anthem and even human DNA.

40

No doubt the organization's aim to establish “a digital and biological backup of planet earth in space” hit a speed bump on this mission, although having studied impact trajectories and the like, SpaceIL are (at least publicly) confident the DVD-sized payload survived intact. More than a mere DVD however (or even Blu-Ray), the payload was in itself a mind-boggling feat of technology and engineering. In an effort to create a human record that could be retrieved and deciphered in millions, if not billions of years, Arch opted to keep their backup analog, a not-particularly compact method of communication. Cue mega compression using nanoetching, lazers, micron-thick nickel plates and all sorts of head-spinningly sciencefictiony processes which really deserved better than to be smeared across the face of the moon because someone in mission control's thumbs were too big for their keypad. What may in fact have saved the fragile payload from lunar obliteration were the organic hitchhikers hurriedly included in the final stages of mission prep. Spliced between the 24 nickel plates of data were thin layers of cushioning epoxy resin encasing biological specimens such as hair follicles and

blood samples of 25 genetically diverse examples of human ancestry, samples from major holy sites such as India's Bodhi tree..... aaaand a bunch of “moss piglets”. No? Not heard of moss piglets? How about “water bears”? No? Ok, Tardigrades...? Nestled in the payload of the doomed spacecraft were earth's most resilient little superstars, picked by the scientific team specifically for their ability to endure environments more hostile than the Big Brother house on the night they give them all the booze. Belying their microscopic proportions and the tweeness of their nicknames, tardigrades are proper hard bastards and it was the very recent revelation of their inclusion in the mission which seemed to capture the public's imagination more than the boring months-old news of a spaceship travelling through the earth's atmosphere on a rocket before plummeting into the moon at over 700 mph carrying printouts of absolutely everything on the internet that's not porn.

Looking like the love-children of E.T., a panda and a marshmallow, moss piglets (thus named as they are commonly found feeding on moss and because, well, they also look a bit like a piglet threw his keys in that bowl...) can survive almost anywhere, from mountain peaks to the deep sea, arctic tundras to active volcanoes and even outer space. Reaching on average just 0.5 mm when fully grown, these water-dwelling microorganisms, first documented in 1773 have survival skills Iggy Pop would envy, overcoming starvation, dehydration, radiation, extreme temperatures and pressures. By putting themselves into dessicated stasis when necessary, tardigrades convert the H2O in their bodies into proteins which effectively turn their cells to glass. Nevertheless, they can be rehydrated back into activity years later - the current record from deep freeze being three whole decades. Despite their otherworldly qualities, water bears are abundant and easily found, making them accessible for study by schoolchildren, amateur scientists and experts alike. As pics and videos of the charismatic little buggers recently went viral, they've found themselves with the kind of PR the nowhere-near-as-indestructiblebut-still-fucking-

hard-to-end cockroach could only dream of when it first ht the big time. Suddenly everyone wants a piece of the moss piglet pie. They've swiftly become this year's must-have accessory, striking a chord with society's increasingly critical perception of throwaway culture. If iPhones were built more like tardigrades, perhaps we wouldn't need a new one every year. Celebs and socialites eager to promote hitherto undemonstrated sustainable credentials have stoked the gossip column fires of speculation. Usually I like to ponder over the challenges and issues that face parents and hopefully offer a little guidance, support or just a friendly “I know how you feel”. But, it’s way too hot to be serious and let’s face it sometimes it gets a bit overwhelming reading mountains of advice and wondering what you’re doing right and wrong, so this month’s parenting tips, are coming to you in the form of funny comments quotes and reasonings from parents who have been through it all… any of these relate?

The universe is always speaking to us and the communication is an ongoing flow of information that comes from both the outside and from within. As with intuition, synchronicity is also always happening, it’s just that most people are not aware enough to see them. We haven’t really been taught to listen to and follow our intuition, and intuition is connected to our ability to experience synchronicity. It’s also important because not all “signs” are actually signs, so intuition is vital in terms of being able to discern what is truly for us and not merely what our ego wants. The ego can easily interpret events to mean something because it wants them to mean something, so be (self) aware.

Mostofusweretaughtto notfollowourinnerknowing and truth Most of us were told “you gotta do it (live life) this way” because ’that’s what everybody else is doing’ and ‘that’s just how life works’. But what if you were told wrong? What if it’s not true at all? How could it possibly be ‘right’ to go against your own inner compass and instincts? It makes no sense at all and it only creates inner conflict in people and takes them out of the flow of life. The truth is that you can rely on your inner guidance, and you can also trust the outer guidance that the universe is constantly sending your way.

44

How to experience more In your life IN THE AUGUST EDITION OF SOCIETY MARBELLA I WROTE ABOUT HOW TO LISTEN TO YOUR INTUITION, YOUR INNER GUIDANCE SYSTEM. IN THIS ARTICLE I’M GOING TO SHARE WITH YOU ABOUT THE OUTER GUIDANCE WE ALL HAVE ACCESS TO AND WHICH OFTEN COMES IN THE FORM OF SYNCHRONICITY.

Invite and invoke more synchronicityintoyourlife Synchronicities are a reminder that reality is something more than what we have been told it is. If you with sincerity say something like this you will open up to letting life both surprise you and guide you in all its beautiful ways: “Please send me a sign that can help me with [your issue/challenge/desire]. I ask for a sign that is so clear that it leaves no doubt in my mind that there indeed is a guiding principle in the universe that is kind and loving and that knows me and which help is available to me. Thank you.” Synchronicity always seeks to give us direction towards something that could somehow benefit us, like for example by sending symbolic messages (many times through other people without them even knowing it) and other ‘outer’ signs. They are meaningful and encouraging messages that feels very personal and that many times leaves you in complete awe and wonder. Synchronicities can come as validations that lets you know you’re on the right path and that things are somehow connected to your goals and desires even if it doesn’t look that way. In times of doubt they can come as precognitions of future events and outcomes, like bread-crumbs along your path to encourage you and bring hope.

It’s like having the universe letting you know it has your back! It’s up to us to pay attention to all the (sometimes strange) coincidences, serendipities and other signs and chance meetings.

Things that makes you go “hmmm...” Many times, synchronicities also completely jolt you with astonishment and make you believe in magic and miracles again! As you begin to notice them and become aware of the themes and patterns that are unfolding all around you all the time (that you currently may be completely blind to), you can’t help but smile and feel a deep connectedness with the universe.

Soagain, allyoureallyhave todoistoaskformoretobe shown That’s all it takes, and then stay open and aware to both subtle as well as bigger signs and information that the universe sends your way. Synchronicity then opens up more and more and one string of events leads and transitions smoothly and effortlessly into the next. So, it doesn’t have to be something that only happens now and then randomly, but it can actually be a way you live your life. It happens naturally as you become aware of the other, deeper dimensions of life that most people can’t see or even know exist, and then you

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

will begin to experience synchronicity more and more.

Synchronicitybecomesthe normwhenyoufollow your intuition The less you act on your inner wisdom though, the less likely you will get synchronicities, simply because your awareness of them diminishes. It’s all connected, so pay attention to meaningful synchronistic events and coincidences especially in the next couple of days or so after you’ve asked to see more. The more aware and aligned with the flow you become, the more you will experience them, and that’s when really great and amazing things will begin to unfold in your life. Many times, it happens rapidly, as a series of happenings that you then respond to and take action on, and that’s when other things in your life starts to sync and fall into place for you as well.

IT’S AS IF THE UNIVERSE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR YOUR COOPERATION AND PARTICIPATION IN THE FLOW OF LIFE, AND NOW, FINALLY, THE PACE CAN START TO PICK UP AND THIS IS WHEN THINGS BEGIN TO HAPPEN FAST! 45

How to lower your risk of having a

STROKE

Holistic Nutritionist and Lifestyle Cleanse Expert, Elissa Goodman has a mission to educate and encourage healthy mindful living by helping others embrace the concept that we are a product of what we eat and how we treat ourselves. After losing her husband to cancer plus fighting cancer herself, Elissa is passionate about cleansing your body and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

ACCORDING TO THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION STROKES ARE THE FIFTH LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN THE U.S. TO PUT INTO PERSPECTIVE, EVERY FOUR MINUTES, AN AMERICAN DIES OF A STROKE.

www.elissagoodman.com info@elissagoodman.com

Strokes are the leading cause of serious longterm disability and, while I don’t want to incite fear, the risk of a stroke should not be ignored. There are warning signs and natural methods for stroke prevention that you can start implementing today to reduce your risk of stroke – without unnecessary pharmaceuticals. But, first, what happens to the body during a stroke and why? The brain must have access to oxygen at all times in order to function properly. Without a fresh supply of oxygen, cells within the brain begin to die. The way that oxygen reaches the brain is through the blood, so when blood vessels are blocked and blood cannot travel to the brain is when stroke occurs. There are various kinds of stroke and they affect different areas of the brain and lead to varying degrees of damage. Around 90% of strokes are ischemic strokes, they are, by far, the most common type of stroke. An ischemic stroke occurs when blood vessels in neck and/or brain become blocked. The primary causes for ischemic stroke are thrombosis (a clot forms in an artery in the brain or neck), embolism (a clot forms in another part of the body and travels to the brain), and stenosis (narrowing of an artery that cuts off blood supply to the brain). The rarer form of stroke is called a hemorrhagic stroke, when a blood vessel ruptures and leaks into the brain.

WARNING SIGNS It is absolutely crucial that you take stroke warning signs seriously as the less time it takes to treat a stroke, the more likely recovery will be. Some of the most common signs of stroke include an extreme and unusual headache, slurred speech, abrupt weakness on one side of the body, sudden poor balance, abrupt decline in vision, paralysis on one side of the body, dizziness, inability to look at bright light, memory loss, confusion, difficulty swallowing and sudden numbness or tingling anywhere in the body. An easy-to-remember method for determining whether you or a loved one is having a stroke is the ‘FAST’ acronym:

F A S T

FACE: look at yourself in the mirror and try to smile. If one side of your face remaains in flaccid paralysis, it likely means you are experiencing a stroke. ARMS: if you are unable to raise one of your arms, or when you do raise your arms, one of them droops, this is another warning sign. SPEECH: slurred speech is a strong indicator of stroke.

TIME: if any or all of these signs are observed, get to a hospital as fast as possible.

Natural Methods for Prevention

Luckily, according to the American Stroke Association, a whopping eighty percent of strokes are preventable. There are strategies that we can all be implementing, many of them daily, to ensure that we are limiting our stroke risk as much as possible.

• STAY ON TOP OF YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE. High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of stroke for both men and women. Regular exercise is one of the best ways to lower blood pressure.

• CUT BACK ON ALCOHOL. Women who have one or more drinks per day and men who have two or more drinks per day have increased risks of stroke. Opt for a non-alcoholic cocktail or low sugar kombucha instead.

• WORK ON WEIGHT MAINTENANCE and healthy weight loss if needed. It can help to lower blood pressure and other stroke risk factors.

• BE SURE THAT YOU ARE GETTING ENOUGH VITAMIN D. Research now indicates that vitamin D deficiency may be associated with a higher risk of • QUIT SMOKING. Smoking condenses the blood, which stroke. If you are concerned that can lead to plaque buildup and eventually stroke. you may not be getting enough of the vital nutrient, I recommend • LIMIT YOUR CHOLESTEROL INTAKE. One of the easiest starting on a supplement – my ways to do this is by transitioning to a more plantfavorite is Pure Encapsulations. based diet.

While the idea of stroke is certainly a disconcerting thought, it really is comforting and should be motivating to know that most cases are fully preventable. As with many other health issues, a nutrient-dense and mostly plant-based diet, regular exercise, and refrain from certain harmful substances can do wonders for stroke prevention. The first step is simply committing to a healthy lifestyle. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you would like some stroke-prevention support. And, as always, please check with a doctor before starting any new supplements.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mindblowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.

R

ihanna’s makeup line, Fenty, shook the beauty industry to its core when she launched her 40 brilliantly formulated shades of foundation ranging from very fair to very deep. Why did this cause such an uproar? Just days after the launch, the darker foundations completely sold out, thus debunking a huge common industry myth (which many of the big brands still claim) that darker shades of makeup simply don’t sell. Finally, voices have been heard in the fight to diversify the range of products on offer in the makeup industry. And this is making the hair industry look seriously out of step. Black women spend an inordinate amount of money on their hair, more so than any other demographic group, and yet the majority of mainstream hair brands still cater solely to Caucasian hair.

52

Mind The -Hair- Gap This month Jonathan investigates the hair industry’s inequality for women with Afro hair.

The root cause When it comes to hair salons, the problem continues. Generally speaking, most Caucasian hair stylists don’t know how to deal with Afro and Asian or multitextured hair types unless they trained in a place that offers Afro hair training. Many salons have to refuse customers with Afro hair as they don’t have any stylists experienced in working with it. This needs to change right now, starting at the beginning, with stylists’ education.

AFRO HAIR IS SUCH INCREDIBLE SPECIALISED AREA IN THE HAIR INDUSTRY.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Training for Afro hair has long been a completely separate module from the basic British hairdressing NVQ (training qualification). Until recently, students had to pay more to learn to do Afro hair. When you’re a young student with limited funding, extra modules aren’t likely to be on the top of your spending agenda. This was the case for me, sadly. I wish I could turn back time and change this. As someone whose best friend’s husband is of African descent, with dual heritage children and grandchildren, I have been lucky to have always worked around Afro hair. I was basically self-taught and because their hair isn’t what I would call pure Afro – there is definitely some Caucasian hair in the mix – I can apply most of the hair products that you find in high street salons. When it comes to true Afro hair, African or Caribbean, it’s a different ball game completely. What I have learnt over the years is you need to treat this hair type with even more respect than Caucasian hair as it is typically fragile and dry; the curls in the hair strands hinder the scalp’s natural oils from reaching the ends of the hair.

Let’s get straight to the point Of course, most women with Afro hair want straight, shiny, smooth, bouncy hair which is practically unachievable on this hair type. This is where chemical hair relaxers come into play and although I have done it, it is not something I am comfortable with, simply because I have such little experience in this field. Plus, I will admit there is a little bit of fear as well. The main ingredient in hair relaxers is sodium hydroxide, which has a ph not fair off that of hair removal products like Immac. Black women will tell you stories of burnt scalps and broken hair from poorly applied chemical straighteners relaxers. On top of that you’re then going to start colouring it and weakening the hair even more, putting this hair type under such incredible stress. You just can’t go running around with tubs of bleach. This is why Afro hair is such incredible specialised area in the hair industry. It tends to be monopolised by the black community, simply because they know their own hair type and how to look after it correctly.

YOU WANT LONG BLONDE HAIR TODAY, NO PROBLEM, SIT DOWN... ALL YOU DO IS GET A BIG BAG OF HAIR, PLAIT THE HAIR TO THE SCALP AND STITCH IT ON – BINGO. A stitch up Due to many of the above issues with this hair type, the weave culture is huge – and simply fabulous. Basically, you canerow your own hair and then stitch on the hair of your choice. I love it. Naomi Campbell is a perfect example of this. She is known for her love of wigs and weaves. Tina Turner is another one. Most of the iconic black women in the entertainment or modelling industry use weaves and wigs as a method of choice and self-expression. I find this whole area extremely interesting, but I think I would have to live all over again to have the time to be any good at it. Wouldn’t it be fab to say to my client, I’m going to stitch your hair on. You want long blonde hair today, no problem, sit down. Imagine not having to stick bleach on and blowing the hair apart, then picking

it out of the plug hole because the hair snapped off. All you do is get a big bag of hair, plait the hair to the scalp and stitch it on – bingo.

The beauty battle As incredulous as it sounds, it is actually nearly impossible to buy products for Afro hair in mainstream stores. Particularly styling products. Most salons also don’t stock the correct products and they need to be specially ordered. For the most part, hair products for Afro and multi-textured hair are relegated to beauty supply outlets in localities that are deemed “ethnic”. On the coast you will find these stores only in Fuengirola. The mind boggles at how so many hair care brands ignore an entire and large group of people because their curl pattern doesn’t quite fit the original products. The hair industry has become hugely stagnated and very segregated. Why don’t the big brands launch an exclusive range for this hair type? They have the science, technology and little people in white lab coats at their fingertips, and you’re telling me they can’t come up with something that works?

WHY DON’T THE BIG BRANDS LAUNCH AN EXCLUSIVE RANGE FOR THIS HAIR TYPE?

The new wave The only solution is for the big hair brands to step up and become more inclusive with their products. But the real key is to start at the beginning, with training. Afro and textured hair should not only be mandatory when taking your NVQ but should be given as much attention as the other basic hair types, not just a two-day gloss over. This would mean that the next generation of hairdressers will be able to deal with all hair types, and women and men of colour could walk into any salon and get the same excellent service as everyone else.

hen it comes to finding a great hairdresser or beautician, it’s not just about choosing the right salon, there are many things that come into consideration: can I find it easily, park without stress, is it friendly and welcoming, do they offer all the latest treatments? That’s why The House Hairdressing in Calahonda is renowned as the go to salon for all of the aforementioned and more… THE MISSION

LOCATION

Coming from the UK and running 7 salons and training academies, this talented and driven husband and wife team have put their heart, soul and decade’s worth of experience into this flagship salon, and it’s clear to see the love and attention to detail that has gone into creating it. Thomas and Anita’s mission is not only to provide the best hair and beauty services, but to help people to feel amazing inside and out.

Situated in Los Olivos commercial centre, The House Hairdressing’s flagship salon is in a super convenient spot. With easy access and exit from the toll road and just 12 mins from La Canada, the salon is perfect for people coming from Marbella, La Cala and the surrounding areas. Since it’s located in the commercial centre, there’s plenty of space to park, plus a supermarket, café, pharmacy, and other shops on the site for convenience. WELCOME TO THE HOUSE As we enter The House, we are greeted by the lovely Kelly at reception who coordinates everything and takes care of the appointments. Within minutes we felt ‘at home’ chatting to the girls and relaxing in the lounge area. The salon is welcoming, spacious and light with modern décor and beautiful artwork adorning the walls. The downstairs area of the salon is where all the hair and nail magic happens and where you will find the founders , Thomas and Anita, hard at work helping their clients to look and feel their best.

56

The Calahonda salon has only been open since March 2019 but has already gained a solid reputation as the go to salon for hair, beauty and a feelgood boost. Following the success of their salons in Elviria (They also run the Garage Barbers in Elviria), Thomas and Anita wanted to expand their brand and services but held off until the right opportunity came along. When this arose in Los Olivos commercial centre, the pair jumped at the opportunity.

Thomas opened his first salon back in 1994 and went on to win several awards and teach for some of the biggest names in the industry such as Schwarzkopf, Sebastian and TIGI. Thomas has also worked with many celebrities and well-known athletes, gaining a respected reputation in the process. He has now released his own book, ‘Just for The Day’, a daily diary with motivational quotes for each day and space to journal or make notes as you go. The book has been popular with their clients and the personal development industry as it’s unique, beautifully presented and packed with daily doses of feel-goodness.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

FOLLOWING THE SUCCESS OF THEIR SALONS IN ELVIRIA (THEY ALSO RUN THE GARAGE BARBERS IN ELVIRIA), THOMAS AND ANITA WANTED TO EXPAND THEIR BRAND. After working with some of the world’s most respected industry leaders, Anita opened her first salon in London 1993 and began receiving many top awards, including the first ever British Hair Colourist of the Year. Anita was also contracted by huge brands including Schwarzkopf and Loreal, as well as working with some of the UKs top celebrities and popstars. Just like a home, The House Hairdressing is a welcoming place to come and relax, be yourself, and be pampered at the same time. Anita explains “Our clients often become more like friends and we like to keep up with them and catchup whenever they come in.”

THE HOUSE BEAUTY After finishing up on the ground floor, we head upstairs to check out the beauty and holistic areas. We are transitioned into a low-lit space with calming décor and various beautiful treatment rooms. The ambience is very tranquil throughout, perfect for getting a wonderful massage, facial or any other of the fabulous treatments available. This is where you will find Nikki,a skin and beauty specialist who had been

working for other top salons for over 15 years and finally opened up her own space at The House Beauty. Nikki and her dedicated team provide a wide range of treatments from waxing and reflexology, to eyelash extensions and botox. It goes deeper than beauty here though with Nikki being able to provide treatment for skin conditions that can really improve people’s confidence such as tailored facials for acne, treatments for skin pigmentation, IPL laser body hair removal and more. They also have a body therapist who is a physio,

chiropractor, sports massage masseuse and a specialist in pain relief. This really is a case of a one stop beauty shop!. Sincere congratulations to the entire house team and keep up the good work

The Tech Scene

irtual reality has been talked about as the next big thing in the entertainment industry for several years, but it’s only been the past 12 months that it’s really taken off. With new headsets and software being released every week, the quality is getting better and better, and the use of virtual reality and augmented reality has expanded well beyond games and movies.

What is Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality? VR (Virtual Reality) creates a lifelike 3D digital reality. Currently this works by using a VR headset that creates a 360-degree simulation to make you feel like you are actually there. AR (Augmented Reality) on the other hand, overlays the image you would see through your mobile phone camera and screen. The Pokemon Go game is one of the most famous examples of AR. It uses the GPS location of the player to find and catch virtual creatures in the local area. Check out some of the other cool ways VR and AR are being used in 2019…

ENTERTAINMENT AND GAMES

There are now hundreds of games that now incorporate VR and AR, and the life-like quality is improving with every new update or release. We even have a Virtual Reality park in Malaga, where you can have a go on rollercoasters, walk round horror-houses, explore with dinosaurs, ride on crazy swings and more.

The Tech Scene

FITNESS

Imagine entering a fitness class with a virtual instructor and other virtual players, or working out in some of the most beautiful exotic places in the world. It’s all possible with VR. Except you wouldn’t even have to leave your home...There are now many virtual reality fitness apps available to download and use with a VR headset for an immersive fitness experience.

ARCHITECTURE

VR has the ability to transform the way architects design their building projects. The technology enables architects to experiment with different aspects of the design process such as layout, materials and lighting. It can also be used to give potential buyers virtual tours of their new homes and buildings before purchasing.

TOURISM

Travel and hospitality companies have already started taking advantage of VR to showcase their destinations and accommodations in a new way. For example, Thomas Cook partnered with Samsung Gear VR to provide realistic views of Thomas Cook’s locations around the world. It won’t be long before more travel companies jump on the VR bandwagon and provide virtual tours of their destinations and properties.

BEAUTY & COSMETIC

PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDERS

It’s hard to imagine how VR could help with psychological conditions but trials have shown that virtual reality could be very useful here. A VR program has already been tested to help people with a fear of heights. The program involves patients donning the headset and being transported to the top floor of a shopping mall, where they must carry out a range of spine-tingling challenges. The trial was found to be very successful and the team is now developing similar treatments for psychosis and OCD. People with sleep disorders can use the VR headset to immerse themselves in a 360-degree kaleidoscope or calming scene with relaxing sleep music.

Local businesses like Ocean Clinic Marbella, use VR to let patients ‘try on’ face or body surgery so they can see what they will look like after surgery, just by putting on the VR headset and looking into a virtual mirror. Augmented reality is widely used in beauty mobile apps now, from Snapchat filters, to apps that let you try out new eyebrow or hair styles.

FILMS AND MUSIC

EDUCATION

VR has the possibility to transform the learning experience for both the teacher and the student. Virtual reality can be used in training for many industries including medical, manufacturing, and driving or flight simulations. For schools, the idea is to allow students to experience scenarios, parts of the world, or reenactments of historical moments as if they were there. Any of the content can be interactive, allowing a truly multidimensional learning experience.

Many Hollywood directors are now taking on projects that use VR technologies such as the short film ‘Wild’ which was produced as an interactive virtual reality film. Some films and TV shows are also now available to watch in VR if you own a headset. You can also now watch live performances from singers and performers with a VR headset and the Wave XR app, attending the show virtually either as a standard viewer or a ‘floating star’.

RETAIL

VR has played a big part in transforming the retail industry with the rise of smart shopping. Popular retail stores like Ikea have already introduced VR to their apps in order to showcase their products inside the home, and to give customers a view of how it would look before purchasing. Other retailers such as Adidas and Nike have used the technology to virtually try on clothing and footwear. AR apps like Fitz Frames also lets kids customize and try on prescription glasses for the perfect match.

THE 911 SPEEDSTER IS THE CONVERTIBLE GT3 WE ALWAYS WANTED

MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE

PORSCHE 911 SPEEDSTER 97

TORQUE TALK

98

TORQUE TALK

Back in 1954 Porsche’s US importer at the time, Max Hoffman, managed to persuade the factory to make a stripped-down 356 Cabriolet with a shorter windscreen for the convertible crazy US market. And so the Porsche Speedster was born. However, a Speedster did not re-appear in the Porsche range until right at the end of the G-Series 3.2 Carrera in 1988, mainly with the Turbo-look body width. By close of play in 1989 a total of 2,103 cars had been made, with just 161 being the narrow body version. Porsche appeared to be making up for lost time when they launched the 964 Speedster in 1992. This time round the fashion was reversed and of the 930 cars made in its single year of production, just 15 had the wider Turbo look. Momentum was lost yet again with the 993 model, and its relatively short lifespan before the 996 took over meant there was no time for an official production 993 Speedster to be developed and sold. However, two cars were specially made by Porsche Exclusive in 1995 for Ferdinand Alexander Porsche who had a Carrera width Tiptronic, and Jerry Seinfeld, who ordered a manual Turbowidth 4S.

OUR FIRST SPEEDSTER A D V E N T U R E TO O K P L AC E I N T H E H I L L S A B OV E N I C E O N THE 997 SPEEDSTER LAUNCH IN 2010 WHERE WE ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO D R I V E A 1 9 5 4 3 5 6 SPEEDSTER AND THE G-SERIES MODEL.

With the 408hp Exclusive Powerkit motor and PDK fitted as standard the 997 Speedster was a huge amount of fun, and the idea of this more potent motor shared with the 997 Sport Classic was a stepping stone to greater things that was to take over eight years to realise. Fast forward to 2018 and the concept of an open GT3 has always been a tantalising thought, and apparently one not far from the minds of Andreas Preuninger and his GT team at Weissach.

99

TORQUE TALK

Andreas once told me that every model proposed to the Board needs to have a credible business case attached. The strong ‘Speedster’ brand, and Porsche’s 70th Anniversary in 2018 were the catalysts that created the perfect storm, justifying both the re-imagined 935 based on the GT2 RS and a Speedster with 991.2 GT3 underpinnings. The Porsche flat six naturally aspirated engine in the new Speedster makes 510hp at 8,400rpm accompanied by 470Nm of torque at 6,250rpm. This nicely splits the 500hp output of the 991.2 GT3 and GT3 Touring, and the 520hp of its GT3 RS sibling, which both make 460Nm of torque at 6,000rpm. And as with all the GT3 models using this motor the limiter is set at 9,000rpm. All are street legal variants of the 9A1 4.0 litre motor that has proven to be strong and reliable in the 911 RSR racecar, but the revised 510hp version that powers the new Speedster is unique in being specifically developed to meet the EU6 WLTP emissions regulations introduced in Europe last September. Technically, the standout feature of this revised emissions standard is the particulates filter required for both petrol and diesel engines. This is significant because any device placed in the path of escaping exhaust gases only adds to backpressure, which is never good for power. However, Porsche’s engineers are very good at finding workarounds from seemingly difficult situations. So rather than losing power, by using a revised multi-throttle intake system and a lighter, more efficient exhaust they have actually managed to add 10hp along with 10Nm of torque for good measure. This slight boost in output is certainly a good thing, as despite the loss of the Coupe roof and heavy rear glass the Cabriolet-style structural stiffening sees the 991 Speedster tip the scales at 1,465kg (DIN), 35kg more than the 991.3 GT3 Coupe. That said, the 997 Speedster from 2010 weighed 1,540kg, so decent progress has been made in terms of saving weight, while power has shot up dramatically. Because the Speedster is mean to be a pure driving machine for high days and holidays it only comes with the motorsport fettled six-speed manual gearbox. On that score its closest mechanical relative is the GT3 Touring.

100

TORQUE TALK

While the manual gearbox saves 15kg over the PDK the lightning fast dualclutch transmission is in a different league, making the 991.2 GT3 PDK significantly faster away from rest, its 3.4 sec 0-100km/h sprint illustrating the advantage conferred by the extra ratio and electronic controls of the PDK paddle shift transmission. However, sheer speed and lap times are not what an open car is all about and with the extra 35kg amounting to around the weight of half a passenger, it is certainly impossible to perceive on the fly. Against the stopwatch the Speedster’s 4.0 sec 0-100km/h sprint time and 310km/h Vmax split hairs with the 3.9 sec 0-100km/h sprint and 312km/h top speed of the 500hp GT3 Touring. Frankly this is way faster than most sane people would want to go in an open road car. The extra weight added by the structural stiffening that is common to the 991 Cabriolet and the Speedster is partially countered by crafting the front luggage compartment lid and the bespoke rear deck lid from carbon-fibre.

Since the rear-engine 911 benefits from weight over its front wheels to aid high-speed stability the slight reduction in weight up front compared to the stock aluminium lid is not a big deal except in terms of overall weight. However, the benefits of swapping out the Cabriolet’s electro-hydraulic roof folding mechanism and metal cover

for a manually operated ragtop and lightweight carbon-fibre rear deck panel cannot be understated. Removing weight from the highest point of the car aft of the driver not only lowers the centre of gravity but also reduces the couple created by the combination of yaw and lateral acceleration in fast bends, particularly bumpy ones.

TORQUE TALK

Add to this the race-bred 991 GT3 suspension re-calibrated to the Speedster’s unique structural stiffness, rear axle steering, active engine mounts and the mechanical grip of the Michelin Cup 2 rubber, and the result is direct and incisiveness messages that make you feel the car is hardwired to your fingertips and seat of the pants. This is a level of communication that makes the 992 Carrera Cabriolet we drove recently feel muted in comparison. What surprised us even more was the lightness of touch in tight bends, on public road at least, that bests even the awesome GT3 Coupe itself. Helped by the other GT3 elements of rear axle steering and dynamic engine mounts, the pointy front end feels overall razor sharp and the sense of agility is amplified. The low mounting of the 918 Spider inspired sports seats that hold you firmly in place further aid the feeling of being at one with the Speedster. With just the blue sky above you and every sound and nuance of the motorsport flat-six and its exhaust reaching your eardrums unfiltered by metal and glass the Speedster brings you that much closer to the action. The monocoque construction used by almost every car made today means that that once you slice off the roof, even structures as stiff as the latest 992 Carrera Cabriolet still exhibit a discernible amount of scuttle shake on bad roads. We experienced this on the launch in Greece earlier this year despite the all-new shell having gained about 10% in torsional stiffness. The tarmac around Stuttgart is pretty smooth and here the Speedster felt rock solid. Knowing full well that this meant we were not comparing

102

apples with apples we sought out some of the less well-surfaced and maintained roads that we know in the area. There is one particular road near Porsche’s Weissach R&D facility that is both curvy and undulating, and also features elevation changes along with mid-corner bumps. You cannot go very fast here as the road is relatively narrow and the line of sight is not great, but you do not need to go fast to feel scuttle shake, which is more closely tied to a cars secondary as opposed to its primary ride. This was actually the only road where we felt the suspension was actually firm as the dampers were being worked hard to keep vertical movement in check over the short, sharp bumps at around 100km/h. Yet for all this vertical torture the Speedster felt taut and supremely together with minimal body flex. Back on smoother roads we tried the harder ‘Sport’ damper setting and kept it in that position for all of 10 seconds. The extra firmness was not welcome on the public highway and we judged it only suitable for a billiard table smooth racetrack like Hockenheim. The chassis engineers have done such a brilliant job that the ‘Normal’ position quickly proved to be our default setting. With the fantastic suspension setup allowing you to make good use of the engine’s power on our challenging country road route it quickly became apparent that the stock brakes (black calipers and steel rotors) fitted to our test car were not the greatest. We soon had them smelling of hot linings and feeling less sharp than the rest of the car, so always tick the box for the PCCB brakes.

The unrestricted autobahn let us really give the Speedster its head. Accelerating through the gears, taking the motor to 8,500rpm in third and fourth gears was quite intoxicating in terms of both the sheer thrust and visceral soundtrack, the short stubby gear level with its short shift mechanism needing just firm finger pressure to find the next ratio. It took speeds well past 200km/h to discover that despite the lack of a Cabriolet style wind deflector your hair does not get ruffled much. With the side windows up the two large nacelles that give the rear deck its hump-backed appearance and the small aerofoil section between them turned out to be

TORQUE TALK

quite effective at keeping unwanted vortexes out of the cabin. With GT3 underpinnings that allow you to turn the character dial to 11 when you are in the mood the new 991 Speedster is a captivating car that offers much more driving enjoyment than first appearances might suggest. While it may only work as everyday transport if you live in a sun-drenched place and don’t have to carry much with you the Speedster is a car that you can enjoy in a relatively painless manner. One of the things that make the new 911 Speedster so appealing is the fact

that nobody really needs it, and it plays that decadent role so very well. By ditching the practical everyday sportscar aspect that makes the Cabriolet such a good all rounder, the Speedster becomes that much more singular in purpose. Previous Porsche Speedster models were almost but not quite attempts at creating the ultimate al fresco driving experience. They were less practical than the equivalent Cabriolet, not much better to drive, and in some ways actually worse. The GT3 underpinnings of the new car make all the difference, allowing the Speedster recipe to reach its full potential at last.

T

he Roman baths near Marbella are amongst the finest examples of Roman concrete to be found anywhere! The baths utilised by Julius Caesar near Casares (hence its name) are still in operation, as is the Roman Theatre in Málaga. But tucked away in the unlikely surroundings of the Poligono Industrial of Guadarranque, in the municipal terminal of San Roque near Gibraltar, lie the remains of Carteia. Once home to four thousand inhabitants, it occupies a unique place in history. Originally a Phoenician settlement in the 7th century BC, its strategic position on the Strait of Gibraltar attracted the Punic successors to the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, and subsequently the Romans, Turdetanos, Visigoths and Moors. The name itself derives from the Phoenician Word “qart”. It was the Carthaginians who in the 4th century BC recognised the value of the settlement. Its location near the coast was a perfect strategic position in relation to the trade routes of the civilised world, whilst its inlet was large enough to shelter an entire fleet. Here ships could shelter before leaving the civilisation of the Mediterranean sea for the hostile unknown of the Atlantic ocean. Its position proved of vital importance during the three Punic Wars fought between 264 BC and

122

Spain was, of course, one of the most important colonies of the Roman Empire. As a result Roman remains are to be found dotted all over Andalusia ending in the destruction of Carthage by Rome in 146 BC. The Punic Wars broke out not long after the refounding of the settlement. In 206 BC the Carthaginians and their allies the Turditanos were soundly defeated by the Romans under Scipio Africanus at the Battle of Ilium. The Turditanos succumbed to Rome, but the Carthaginian army retreated to Cádiz under Hasdrubal Gisco and Mago Barca. Hasdrubal Gisco returned to Africa. Mago

Barca´s deputy Hanno led 700 cavalry and 6000 infantry out of the city to confront the Roman army under Gaius Lucius Marcius Septimus. 4000 of the Carthaginian army were Celtiberians and Africans. The Romans attacked the Carthaginian force and surrounded them on a hill outside Carteia. The mercenaries quickly opened negotiations with Marcius, who demanded the surrender of any deserter prisoners. He further asked them for financial reparations.

Once the mercenaries had come down from the hill to negotiate further, Marcius presented his final demand for the mercenary forces to surrender their arms. This last demand infuriated the Celtiberians, whose culture established that death was preferable to surrender their weapons. They refused to comply and promptly resumed battle. Over half their number were slaughtered but the rest were able to make an escape towards a fleet headed by

Enraged, he promptly attacked the city, took it, crucified the magistrrates, and retreated to the Balearic Islands. Meanwhile the inhabitants of Carteia had entered into negotiations with Rome. Mago Barca had discovered this and moved against what he regarded as conspirators. They were seized and despatched to Carthage in a fleet consisting of a quinquireme and eight triremes commanded by Haderbal, governor of Cádiz. A Roman fleet of a quinquireme and seven triremes under Caius Lelio had been at anchor in the port of Carteia, but set sail to intercept the Carthaginian fleet which was making poor headway and upon sight

Roman Theatre in Málaga of the Roman fleet made every effort to escape. The clash was chaotic. The triremes manoeuvred with the greatest difficulty, but the onslaught was bravely fought. Finally the Roman quinquireme managed to sink two of the Carthaginian triremes and immobilise a third, whilst Haderbal fled the conflict and made for the coast of Africa. Caius Lelio returned to harbour in Carteia. At the conclusión of the Punic Wars, Roman veterans were settled in Carteia to maintain a Roman presence in the area. These quickly put down roots, married local girls and began to bring up children. A defensive wall was built around an area measuring 27 hectares, and within this boundary a true Roman town began to develop. The remains of this wall, with a magnificent Punic Gateway, an enormous temple, and a well preserved termal baths complex may still be seen from this period.

Roman Baths at Marbella

The inhabitants of this city, a hetereogeneous population of Romans, Carthaginians, Turdetanos and other local tribes, petitioned the Roman Senate to recognise the marriages between Romans and nonRomans, and to recognise the legality of such children. According to Titus Livius Patavinus, better known as Livy, in 171 BC Carteia was given the title of “Colonia Libertinorum Carteia”, granting it the momentous accolade of being chosen by Rome as the first colony outside of Italy to be granted the full rights of Roman citizenship. To be able to say “Civis Romanus Sum” (I am a Roman citizen) was amongst the greatest of acolades possible Amongst other things it guarded against the possibility of being crucified. Saint Paul, a Roman citizen, was beheaded whilst Saint Peter, who was not, was crucified. During the Civil War waged between Pompey and Julius Caesar, the city gave shelter to Pompey´s sons Sextus and

Gnaeus who reorganised their forces from Carteia. When the Moors arrived they centred their attention on Gibraltar, although Qartayanna is mentioned several times with regard to the conquest of Al-Andalus, and the Roman walls were plundered for material to build the Torre Cartagena located on the outskirts. This became the scene of a number of skirmishes between Christian and Muslim forces from the 8th century onwards as the Marinid settlers around Algeciras gave their support to the Nasrid rulers of Granada. The Torre Cartagena is but one example of remains which testify to the extensive history of Carteia as a commercial and military hub. Remains exist from the so-called Dark Ages and early mediaeval period, such as the Visigothic necropolis, and traces of Byzantine structures testifying to the brave attempts of Justinian I to revive the western Roman Empire.

By Ian Greenland nimals. They're everywhere. When not playing the romantic leads in hit TV shows (Friends' Marcel the monkey) or being released from confinement in chart-topping songs (the charismatic but poorlybehaved titular canines of Who Let the Dogs Out), they're lurking in foliage (an earwig, frog or robin) and leaving little summer death-smears on car windscreens (insects presumably... it's always too late to tell). Whilst it's still frowned upon to bring them to church, sit them at a table in a fancy restaurant or get off with them most anywhere, animals have become a near-ubiquitous part of our lives. It's hard for any of us to recall a childhood memory which doesn't directly involve or at least occur in the approximate vicinity of an animal, suggesting they've been around in some form for at least as long as anyone shaking their head at this editor-infuriating excuse for an article (ed.)

124

Experts in fact believe we can trace them as far back as the late 19th century. It seems rather than mere creations of a brilliant imagination, the creatures of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book may have been based on actual species in existence at the time. If correct, this implies both a laziness on the part of Kipling AND that tigers, snakes, bears and monkeys roamed the earth at least as early as 1894, a time we previously thought dominated solely by steam trains, penny farthings and funny moustaches. Despite their apparent longevity, animals can't claim to share the social nuance or cerebral complexity of humans. If they could, it would come out as a bark or

Perhaps to alleviate the stress of their rapidly diminishing natural habitats, subjugation and wholesale eradication by humans or maybe just to give them more confidence for dancing, several animal species are well documented as intentionally seeking out booze.

hiss or some bubbles, thus undermining their claim and further reinforcing their inferiority. As such, we've long been able to classify all critters into just three main categories: Is it nice to stroke? Will it try to eat me? (subcategories: can I fight it? / can I outrun it?) Will I try to eat it? (subcategories: mint sauce, cranberry or horseradish?) Well, at the risk of being hailed this generation's Attenborough (I'll take it), I suggest it's high time we expand our understanding of our non-human companions and add a fourth... Does it like to get pissed up?

Drunk bees exhibit similar traits as drunk people, forgetting where they live, colliding in flight and generally being a nuisance. That's right; it's not just people who enjoy a tipple. Perhaps to alleviate the stress of their rapidly diminishing natural habitats, subjugation and wholesale eradication by humans or maybe just to give them more confidence for dancing, several animal species are well documented as intentionally seeking out booze. In this incisive piece of journalism, which itself may or may not (the first one) have been borne of alcohol, I'll run down my top five blotto beasties. Where British chimps enjoy a nice cup of PG tips, Caribbean Vervet monkeys long ago developed a liking for the ethanolrich fermented sugar present in cane plantations. A study discovered 20% prefer the taste (or its effects) to stupid, boring old water and about 5% of the simian population are actually alcoholics, though they probably don't admit to having a problem. It also showed it's teenage monkeys who consume the most alcohol, but didn't elaborate as to whether they could actually hold it down or made complete tits of themselves like their adolescent human counterparts. Two raccoons in Milton, West Virginia earned themselves incarceration after embarking on a neighbourhoodbothering rampage consisting mostly of “staggering” and “disoriented swaying”. Concerned citizens who feared they were rabid called police who, to their credit, rightly surmised they were in fact paralytic on fermented crab apples. Although they appeared black when approached from behind, it's assumed the fruit-brandishing racoons were spared being immediately shot to death because whilst unholstering, America's finest noted they in fact had white faces. Every autumn in Sweden, scores of incidents occur involving moose who, like those two racoons and the entire population of Somerset know there 'aint no party like a fermented apple party. Blundering into homes, falling into swimming pools, scaring schoolkids and generally giving elk-kind a bad name, half-cut highlights include reports of a drunken moose threesome, the destruction and subsequent 800ft dragging of a child's swing set and one particularly sozzled individual who got stuck in the very tree he was scrumping from. In what appears to be the equivalent of an enforced lock-in with no soft drinks available, by the time the tree was felled and the exhausted moose freed, it couldn't even be arsed to stagger home, choosing to sleep it off on the spot while onlookers, camera crews

and bemused rescue workers packed up around it. A 2012 scientific study into the romantic lives of fruit flies found that males who hadn't managed to pull turned, like so many of us, to alcohol (contained in certain foods), whilst their recently coupled, apparently blissfully content male friends took the high road and abstained... give the smug bastards a year. Or about 10 hours in fruit fly terms. For centuries humankind believed what we now refer to as wasps to be boozed up, belligerent bees. And then the great squash-stall massacre at the Bartons Primary School 1972 summer fete saw a single striped individual sting four adults, three children and a Cocker Spaniel named Claude before Mrs. Noose the drama teacher was able to bravely dispatch it with a badminton racket. As the shocked community rallied in support of the victims amid neardelirious condemnation of bee-kind, a reporter for the Bognor Regis Observer shelved his investigation into why people kept being found asleep at the local garden centre and jumped onto what appeared to be a career-making story. Sure enough, eye-witness testimony and the subsequent examination of the badminton racket revealed the mangled perpetrator still had its stinger and appeared to be stone-cold sober at the time of death. Instead of a drunk bee flown amok, the journalist whose name nobody knows because his career never did go anywhere ascertained we were dealing with a hitherto undiscovered species. 1972 entered the history books as The Year of the Wasp …. “Wasp” is Latin for prick. Their reputation finally untarnished, bees continued on their righteous path, producing honey, pollinating flora and generally having buzzy little wings and furry bodies and stuff. And then a few years back some scientists went and placed the burden of humanity's survival on their tiny

nonshoulders. With numbers on a steady decline mainly due to our own use of pesticides, experts warned that without bees working to pollinate vast swathes of our planet, ecological collapse, crop failure, desertification, knock-on extinctions and widespread famine would ensue - so no pressure guys. How could they not turn to drink?? Researchers have found honeybees will happily feed on pure ethanol, consuming the equivalent of a human necking 10 litres of wine. That's not to say it doesn't affect them. Drunk bees exhibit similar traits as drunk people, forgetting where they live, colliding in flight and generally being a nuisance. In the wild, where fermenting nectar and discarded alcohol provide a welcome release from the responsibilities of the colony, bee societies experience alcoholism at a similar incidence rate as our own. We all like a drink but when a bee's boozing gets in the way of work and it becomes a liability to the hive, its colleagues stage a rather extreme intervention – they mob it en masse and bite off all its legs, resulting in its certain death. In the bee world, get legless and you'll end up just so. At least then you can stop worrying about the end of the world. That lazy moose didn't know how good he had it. If we want to keep both our bodies and our planet healthy, we need to make big changes to the way we look after the land. Using ecological farming practices and giving more of the land back to nature is critical in guarding against the climate crisis, providing enough food for everyone, and to ensure the survival of Indigenous Peoples around the world. Unfortunately, a major new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – the UN body providing the scientific analysis informing global action – reveals how land of all types (forests, grasslands and wetlands to name a few) is being mistreated, causing a host of social and environmental problems. Ironically, the way we produce our food is causing many of these problems. Industrial agriculture has expanded across the planet at a phenomenal rate, chewing up forests and other natural areas to produce cheap crops and meat. Here are the top five reasons we should take more care with the land.

126

reasons to look after our

LAND

How using land better is a vital part of surviving the climate crisis

Using land wisely will combat the climate crisis Forests provide an essential buffer against the ongoing climate breakdown. Large, healthy forests are vital if we are to keep global warming below 1.5ºC, the level needed to keep the climate under control, as are other natural areas like grasslands and wetlands. They draw down carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to lock it away in plant matter and the soils. So the remaining forests need to be protected, damaged forests allowed to recover and millions of native trees planted to restore natural forests (rather than creating commercial tree plantations which don’t have anywhere near the same impact on reducing emissions).

But what’s happening instead is that forests and grasslands are being torn up at an ever-increasing rate, largely by industrial agriculture. The drive to produce cheap meat has seen vast areas of forest being replaced with enormous cattle farms and soya plantations to feed cows, pigs and chickens. Converting forests into agricultural land releases carbon emissions. So it’s no surprise that nearly a quarter of global emissions comes from agriculture, forestry and other types of land use, and meat and dairy production is responsible for a significant proportion of those. Cutting back on the amount of meat and dairy we produce and eat will reduce the amount of forests being converted into agricultural land. Reducing meat consumption around the world by 50% in the next 30 years (and by even greater amounts in regions where meat consumption is already high, like Europe and North America) is crucial to slash emissions and fight the climate crisis.

Healthy land means fertile soils Stripping away the natural vegetation to farm intensively is bad news for the soil. Using the same land to produce multiple harvests each year and the extensive use of agrochemicals have caused considerable damage to soil fertility. According to the UN, a third of all land has been degraded and we’re losing 24 billion tonnes of fertile soil every year. Clearly, this will have an impact on our ability to produce food.

Looking after the land means looking after wildlife and plant species… It’s no secret that forests, grasslands and other natural areas are havens for wildlife and plant species. These hotspots of natural richness contain thousands upon thousands of species, many of which have yet to be studied or even discovered by scientists. As these natural landscapes are converted into industrial agricultural land, this richness is being replaced by huge areas dominated by only a few species – domesticated livestock and plantation crops like palm oil and soya. Many wild species are being pushed to the brink of extinction, and the recent report from the UN’s IPBES warns that up to one million species face extinction because of human activity. To prevent this, the relentless expansion of industrial agriculture needs to be halted and natural areas restored so they can continue to support the bewildering variety of life found on our planet. Not only that, adopting ecological farming practices will reduce the use of chemicals like pesticides

– good news for the bees and other insects which are in serious decline.

… and ensures the survival of Indigenous Peoples All over the world, Indigenous Peoples’ rights have been disrespected, resulting in the destruction of their lands and genocide. Not only that, but Indigenous Peoples are subject to intimidation, violence, and even murder as they come into conflict with companies and governments trying to exploit their land, whether for mining, logging or industrial agriculture. Indigenous Peoples represent less than 5% of the world’s population. Yet collectively, their lands hold over a third of all remaining natural areas and they are on the frontlines fighting to defend forests and other natural areas. Studies have shown that areas governed by Indigenous Peoples contain more biodiversity than elsewhere. The new IPCC land report is clear that respecting and supporting Indigenous Peoples is vital to make sure forests and other natural areas are healthy and wellmanaged.

Cutting back on meat-heavy diets and replacing intensive farming with a more ecological approach will reduce pressure on the land and maintain soil fertility. And soil is another major carbon storage space, so keeping soils in good condition is another natural solution to the climate crisis.

It will even improve our own health

One in nine people on the planet suffer from hunger because they haven’t got enough to eat, so it doesn’t make sense to use so much land growing crops to feed animals or produce bioenergy. Using that land to grow food for people instead means providing enough food for everyone. But for that, we need to reduce the amount of meat and dairy we produce and eat. Growing crops for people to eat is a much more efficient use of land. Shifting to largely plant-based diets with more vegetables, fruit, nuts and pulses will mean less land is needed for agriculture and more can be given back to the forests. Cutting back on meat can also reduce the risk of medical conditions such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes and can ultimately add up to three and a half years to people’s lives. Making these changes is not only good for our health, but the health of the planet.

Waves IN THE WORLD OF OCEAN CONSERVATION

Summer Crosley is an international model and actress, best known for her role in the hit TV show Californication. When she is not traveling the globe, she is devoting her time to making a difference in the world by supporting environmentally friendly causes such as ocean life conservation.

OCEANA IS THE LARGEST NON-PROFIT ORGANISATION DEDICATED TO PROTECTING AND RESTORING THE WORLD’S OCEANS

This initiative is designed to protect our beautiful oceans and to help keep our beaches clean. Summer has influenced the public to join this eco-friendly movement by doing our bit to help decrease pollution and protect wildlife. She continues to dedicate her daily life to encourage others to clean up our beaches and reminding others to reduce, reuse, recycle to conserve our beautiful oceans and coastlines. Most people fail to realise the importance of ocean conservation to protect our planet. Summer reminds her peers and the wider community that littering puts our beautiful wildlife — dolphins, whales, sea turtles, tropical fish at risk of endangerment and extinction. She has travelled to the world’s top beach destinations to raise awareness, including Fiji, Bali, Africa, Mexico, Brazil, and Costa Rica. Through her work with Oceana, Summer continues on her mission to influence thousands to join the eco-friendly movement and help protect our beautiful ocean life from extinction. Oceana is the largest non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting and restoring the world’s oceans. The organisation has been supported by several other big names including Leonardo Di Caprio who has been a major contributor to marine conservation

128

What first made you want to start helping to protect our ocean life and keep our beaches clean? My journey to start protecting our world’s oceans started with a trip to Indonesia 10 years ago. During my time there I realized our oceans coral, reef, and fish were in danger, and that most of the world was dumping their trash into the ocean. So, I started collecting sea urchin shells from Bali, and made over 1000 candles out of the shells and all the proceeds from the candles I donated to several non-profit ocean conservation groups. Apart from no-littering, what’s one thing you would encourage us to do differently to benefit our environment? There are so many little everyday things we can all do that would make a big impact. For example, stop buying water in a plastic bottle. It’s bad on the environment and the chemicals in the plastic are bad for our health. Also, bring your own bag to the supermarket. Stop accepting plastic bags. Thankfully many cities have stopped plastic bags. If you are on the beach and see an empty plastic bottle in the sand, please pick it up and throw it away before it ends up in the ocean. What are your next ocean conservation goals? I am currently working on a project that focuses on putting a stop to fashion that is bad for our oceans, as sadly a great deal of our worlds textile waste and toxic chemicals end up in our oceans causing a great deal of pollution. Also, for the past several years I have been an ambassador for Oceana, which is a large non-profit conservation group based out of California, I am always looking for ways to be involved in projects to make our beautiful world more sustainable. How do you think we can encourage the younger generation to continue looking after the oceans and beaches? I really think this should be taught early on in school. When I was growing up, the teachers never taught children about environmentalist actions they can take. But thankfully now, there has been a lot of press and concerns worldwide and I think that teachers are now starting to inform their students of what they can do to help. I think it is great if kids can join a non-profit in their community to help out with ocean conservation or anything to help Mother Nature.

As a frequent visitor to Marbella, what do you love most about it here? I love the beaches, the food and the people... Marbella is a gem and full of so many places to explore. You have appeared in hundreds of magazines and hit TV shows, what projects are you currently engaged in? I still model quite a bit and it takes me to a lot of amazing places that let me utilize my ocean conservation efforts. I just returned from the magical island of Saint Lucia, and wow was it gorgeous. I helped out for a day at a local farm and

Mindful eating the key

to sustainability A

130

s a chef, I am a big believer that food is something that brings us together, it unites us, it heals us and brings us joy and it should be honoured and respected accordingly. Cooking and eating is a form of self care, regardless of what label we choose to stick the food under. Yet if we are eating mindlessly without appreciation for where this nourishing joy comes from, we are missing a vital piece of what it means to live as a part of nature’s symbiosis.

worth of food wasted each year in the UK alone.

I believe a huge part of both the zero waste puzzle and modern wellness lies in mindfulness. When we take the small amount of time it takes to tune into the food on our plates before we guzzle down each meal we will be far less inclined to contribute to the ÂŁ13 billion

Before you get stuck into your next meal, take just a moment to consider everything that went into getting that food onto your plate. The little seedlings

that burst through the earth, the sunlight that nourished them.

COSTA CUISINE

Imagine that seedling drinking in water through its little roots and growing strong enough to blossom into a beautiful plant. Imagine all of the nourishment and care that that plant received so that it could grow up and out of the earth, the daily life and efforts of the farmer who nurtured it, and who, when it was ready, plucked it from its earth bed. The journey that plant then made across the country (hopefully not too far) to end up in your hands right now. And now it will nourish and care for you, and provide you will sustenance so you may help nourish and care for somebody else. Now take a bite of that plant—taste it, remember how that mouthful of food got to you, really notice how your body and senses respond to it. Give thanks for the nourishment it is providing your body and the taste it is giving your meal. Just as I view cooking, the beauty of mindfulness is in its simplicity; it takes just a few moments of thought, yet this simple act holds of world of power in inciting sustainable change in our individual mindset and behaviours, and in how we treat our food collectively. This is a lovely little exercise to do with kids, too! Because I believe in its power for good, mindful eating plays a huge role in my retreats in Bali. In Bali, this mindfulness practice is fairly easy. The food is exciting, bursting with life and flavour and delivered to your plate at every meal. The table is laid out with differently coloured flowers each day, and we have the luxury of time to sit down together and enjoy our meals fresh from a dip in our private pools, in great company, off our laptops. Back home, though, I realise it’s not always so easy to fit into an already busy

Which is why I show my retreat guests how to instil these new habits even once they’re back home. The retreat includes workshops on how to make delicious plant based food with love, and without waste. We also visit the local organic farm where all of the retreat ingredients come from, to actually see, touch, and taste fresh, vibrant food. During the day this part of the restaurant is usually found to be very tranquil with most of the action taking place down towards the beach, but during the evening it comes alive with music from the DJ and live performers. For our lunch, we headed across the wooden bridge and walked down to the chic beach bar for an arrival drink. Once we were ready to eat, our waiter showed us to our table at the beach restaurant area just a few feet from the bar. It’s a wonderful setting for lunch or dinner with the cool sea breeze flowing through and the pretty canopy giving the perfect balance of both shade and light.

COSTA CUISINE

SUBLIME SEAFOOD STARTERS For starters, we tried the king prawns fried in Panko with Claro’s sweet and sour sauce. They were a scrumptious way to kick off our meal with the crispy Panko coating expertly complimenting the sweet and sour twang. Alongside this we had the unforgettable Ceviche of Sea Bass & Cardinal Prawns. This dish was a feast for the eyes, presented with the ceviche nestled inside a coconut which was laid on a bed of rock salt and pink peppercorns, then topped with fresh salad leaves, edible flowers, and scattered berries. The prawns and seabass were dressed in a delicious sauce bursting with citrus flavors and a hint of ginger.

With the earthy chic vibes, international cuisine and excellent service, Claro Restaurant & Beach Club was a delightful dining experience. And all this located on one of the best blue flag beaches in the area. Visit www.clarobeachclub.com for bookings, menu and info.

MASTERPIECE MAINS Next we tucked into the pork ribs marinated in BBQ sauce, with a side of fries. The chef did an amazing job getting both texture and flavor just right, with the meat literally falling off the bone and a rich smoky taste. The Thai Noodles with prawns and vegetables were also on our ‘must-try’ list for the afternoon and we were not disappointed! It’s definitely one to remember when you fancy a bowl of oriental comfort food. The highlight of the main courses though, and perhaps possibly Claro’s star dish, was the Seabass cooked in a banana leaf. The most creative way we have seen seabass served, still wrapped up in the banana leaf it was cooked in and soaking up all the flavor and goodness, this was truly a plate to devour every last piece.

DELECTABLE DESSERTS It’s a wonder we had any room for dessert after all the scrumptious courses we had enjoyed, but they looked too appetizing to leave without trying! All the deserts at Claro are delicious, but our favorite of the day was the Spanish take on French toast served with ice cream made from coconut milk. The texture was light and delicate, not too sweet, and perfectly paired with the creamy coconut and pieces of fresh ginger. A seriously satisfying way to finish our meal.

After three days of elaboration the process of shaping the cheese begins. It must be kneaded by hand giving it a rounded shape, taking great care so that it does not break. Finally, it is left at room temperature so that the geotrichum makes its effect and the special rind - the ‘brain’, begins to form. The result is an impressive cheese with a soft, creamy texture and melting nuances. Clean flavour predominating the lactic notes of yogurt & cream and a pleasant truffle after-taste.

'LA RUEDA DEL CABRIEL' --- THE CHEESE FACTORY --The name of this cheese factory has its origin in La Rueda del Cabriel, an old watermill that extracted water from the Cabriel River, one of the cleanest in Europe, to irrigate the gardens of the gardeners. Located in Villamalea, in the beautiful valley that borders the Júcar and Cabriel rivers, this cheese factory produces cheeses with raw milk from the family cattle hut, made up of goats from the MurciaGranada region. Raw milk retains the original characteristics of milk, both in nutritional qualities and in flavour and aromas, since the bacterial flora present in milk develops and provides unique and unrepeatable characteristics. The whole process is artisan, the pieces are made one by one, completely handmade and natural.

--- GRANIZO --Granizo cheese is made in Villamalea, Albacete. Each cheese is handcrafted using milk from La Mancha goats which is known for its intense flavour. Its maturation period is 20 days - 200g. Granizo is an artisan soft cheese made from unpasteurised goat’s milk, it has a silky texture and a very peculiar rind that hides black truffle inside, people in Albacete call it ‘cerebro’, meaning ‘brain’. The black truffles give a very aromatic and pleasant flavour with a long-lasting finish.

Off the beaten track...

Java was a totally new experience, having been to Bali we were looking for somewhere a lot quieter and less developed and, quite frankly, less spoilt by tourism. When our brother in law suggested heading for a little known gentle surf break in West Java we were totally up for it. We began searching how to get there and there was just such little information it made the whole thing even more exciting and the promise of adventure arose. We had to leave Indonesia as our visa was running out (you get 30 days with European passports) so we thought about heading over to Singapore for a few nights to check out the city. After looking into it we decided to save the hundreds of euros we would have spent per night on accommodation and instead slept on the floor of Changi airport for one night and flew straight to Bandung, Java the next morning. We had a night in Bandung which was a sprawling hot, smoggy city and by this point on our travels we just didn’t feel like exploring so took a nice hotel, used the facilities and chilled out. From here we made our way south to Batu Karas which was a six hour car ride. Here we checked in to the lovely RNV guesthouse where we were made super welcome and ended up friends with the family there. The small town sits on the Green Canyon, the most stunning palm-

136

lined river which one day we actually hiked and floated down in lifejackets and helmets, as well as being located on the surf break I mentioned which is absolutely perfect for everyone. Our kids were surfing every day for hours, their confidence and skills picked up massively and the beach, though hot, volcanic sand, was clean and quite beautiful. The sunsets were heavenly as were the fresh papaya and lime juices which cost around one euro! One day when the surf wasn’t really happening we decided to take a Land Rover tour with an awesome guide called Alfan, who also ended up being a friend. We took two 4x4s over the ridges and through valleys and rocky rivers of totally untouched land until we arrived at a private beach where we jumped around in the waves - nobody nor any buildings to be seen for miles. Here we were served the most amazing lunch of freshly caught fish cooked on the fire, Kangkung which is locally grown water spinach, Nasi Liwet which is white rice cooked in coconut milk, chicken broth, salam leaves and lemongrass, and some fried tempeh and tofu all served with their homemade chilli sambal and kecap manis. This was literally one of the best meals we have all ever had, they laid it all out on huge banana leaves serving as a tablecloth as well as your plate; we ate it all with our hands and savoured every bite then washing it

down with some jasmine tea. We also tried the local drip coffee and some jungle honey‌ it was a brilliant day out getting to know some local people and enjoying the natural beauty of the island. We went back to the area ourselves on our motorbikes especially to try the local lobsters, we ate all the same stuff as before but this time with around thirty of these amazing fresh, small lobsters - about the size of an enormous giant prawn once you dig out the meat. So so delicious. We also met another local man named Bono who was an incredible artist. He mainly depicted the surf break, sometimes amidst psychadelic swirls,

sometimes his drawings looked like a photograph. He had given up his job as an engineer to play music, move from place to place painting and living a free nomadic life. He was a beautiful soul, genuine and honest and super funny. Java is Muslim and so every day, five times a day you hear prayers delivered over the tanoys from all the local mosques. Our place was based in a small local community of the loveliest friendliest families and the rhythm of the prayer times became part of our own rhythm too. There was something very meaningful and deep about their devotion being so apparent and so consistent. Rather than it being something one might set out to do, prayer is simply an intrinsic part daily life, as commonplace and important as meal times.

PRAYER IS SIMPLY AN INTRINSIC PART DAILY LIFE, AS COMMONPLACE AND IMPORTANT AS MEAL TIMES. Riding our motorbikes around the village and surrounding towns scouting out local eateries was a huge part of our trip here. Though plucking up the courage to ride across the bouncy bamboo bridge (for motorbikes only - it is not very wide!) was challenging but worth it when you find a buffet lunch full of weird and wonderful local foods. Beef rendang, fish wrapped in banana leaves, ayam bakar, the spiciest vegetables, cassava leaf curry, and plenty more. We all ate (ten of us) for about 15€. We also found a foodie spot, Dapoer Kampoeng Restaurant in Green Canyon, where a local man and his French wife and two daughters have turned their grandmother’s house

WE ATE IT ALL WITH OUR HANDS AND SAVOURED EVERY BITE THEN WASHING IT DOWN WITH SOME JASMINE TEA. WE ALSO TRIED THE LOCAL DRIP COFFEE AND SOME JUNGLE HONEY… into an amazing restaurant serving traditional Sundanese food made to an exceptionally high standard! We went time and time again and once they even delivered take away to our guest house and the whole place ate together in the communal area. We only stayed for just over three weeks but in this time we managed to start to feel like part of the family of Batu Karas, everyone was so welcoming and happy to talk and help. A lovely local man, Usep, who maintains the guesthouse we stayed at, even invited us to his sister’s wedding which was a day long affair (8am until 2am) whereby the whole town and more turn up throughout the day and night to bring gifts and well wishes, eat masses of food and watch the entertainment and of course chat to the bride and groom - who had four costume changes in total! This was a beautiful experience which we were honoured to attend. The other travellers we met in Batu Karas were just that, travellers, as opposed to tourists. They were all interesting people from all over who veer off the beaten track and seek out certain surf spots. We were leaving Java from Jakarta which, if you take the main method of transport - car - it takes anywhere between twelve and sixteen hours! It’s a long slog which we were loathe to take on and instead asked around to see what people thought of the local airport and the tiny twelve seater plane that flies direct to Jakarta in only one hour! Everyone promoted the idea that had tried it saying

that you could liken it to a plane ride that you’d pay for as a sight seeing trip. We were sold. You go to the one runway airport and there is one young man there with a computer who you pay cash to for your tickets and after handwriting all your information issues you a ticket! We took the plane and happened to be flying alongside the CEO of the airline and his second in command, a lovely English man who told us all about the company. When we arrived safely, and having seen so many sights due to the plane flying much lower than regular commercial flights, he let my son Noah sit in the cockpit and have a little flying lesson from the Austrian pilot. Then we just meandered across the runway at our own pace and had to figure out where the exit was! All in all Java was a delight, we will definitely return there if we venture over to Indonesia again for a lot more ‘bagus’ (good times, good vibes, good anything) and delicious food and the most accommodating surf and community we’ve come across so far.

Held on the 25th of July, right at the start of the summer holiday season, this year’s event attracted around 130 entrants made up of supercars and classics owned by local enthusiasts, as well as those with a holiday home in Marbella. Judging was run according to the French Concours Rules, which primarily rates cars on their ‘wow’ factor, with style, beauty and elegance accounting for 50-percent of the points. The remaining 50-percent was based on condition, authenticity, quality of restoration, rarity, and historical Importance. With hypercars like the Bugatti Chiron, LaFerrari Aperta, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder in the mix, it was a tough call for the judges, but in the end the vote for this year’s overall winner went to the incredible McLaren Senna.

A NATURAL WAY TO HEAL

The Laura Garcia Salon is now offering reiki, a natural health treatment which balances the energy fields in and around your body, helping your body to heal itself. ‘I have been wanting to learn how to do reiki for a very long time,’ admits salon owner Laura. ‘Over the years many clients have asked me during a facial or massage treatment, if I was combining it with energy healing. When I have replied no, often they are surprised and tell me I must have the natural ability. I have always been interested in natural, holistic approaches to physical and emotional

140

health and have wanted to explore this area further, but I couldn’t find a suitable teacher. Last year I finally met the most incredible reiki teacher. During the course, everything came easy to me, it felt completely natural and I was one of the few who was told they could start offering reiki treatments straight away.’ Reiki is a natural healing treatment that enhances relaxation, makes you feel at peace and lessens your stress. It is a gentle form of energy transmission through the hands of the practitioner. This “life force energy” flows through to activate and strengthen the body’s healing processes to help restore physical, mental and emotional well-

being. When this energy becomes disrupted or blocked, it is believed that stress and disease follow. Since Reiki helps clear energy blocks in the chakras, it is no surprise that a patient feels much more grounded, calm and relaxed after a session. ‘The number one outcome of receiving a Reiki session is relaxation,’ explains Laura,’ When we’re relaxed, we sleep better, our bodies heal better, we think more clearly. I love being able to mix typical beauty treatments such as facials with reiki as it helps my clients go into a deeper state of relaxation.’ ‘Many of my clients use our treatment time as a kind of therapy session, where they can openly talk about their problems and get things off their chest. I’ve always liked to help people and I think the addition of reiki enables me to help my clients even more. I want to continue developing my spiritual side for myself and for my work. I do not call myself a healer. Healing comes from within. I simply facilitate the process of self-healing. ‘ If you would like to try a reiki session with Laura please contact The Laura Garcia salon for more information. It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had known each other. He then suddenly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I turned around to see what he was pointing at, and as I looked down, a light shone on to the rocks where there was a sign that read, ‘Marry Me?’. I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.
