CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT This month SOCIETY MARBELLA turns the spotlight on mother, singer and actress, Brandy Norwood.

From Moesha to Motherhood... By Christie Holland

S

he was only 15 years old when she arrived on the music scene with her self titled album featuring the monster hit, ‘I Wanna Be Down’, now nearly 20 years later the superstar is releasing a new album and starring in Tyler Perry’s latest movie alongside previous SOCIETY MARBELLA cover star, Kim Kardashian. Life in front of the camera is familiar territory for the singer and actress having grown up on our screens in the hit TV series, Moesha. However Brandy made the decision to keep her daughter Sy’rai Iman out of the spotlight. “… her father [Robert Smith] and I felt it was best for her to have as much of a normal life as possible,” revealed the singer. With Mother’s Day approaching we were interested in hearing Brandy’s approach to raising her daughter, “(I’m) raising [Sy’rai] in a different way than

18

how I was raised,” Norwood reveals. “A lot of mothers feel like they’re the mom first, with that authority,” she continues. “But for me, I’m a friend first. I believe that just being there for my daughter as a friend more than ‘I’m in charge…’ causes her to be more open with me as a person. I know I’ll probably get flack for being a friend first, but it really works,” she insists. “[Sy’rai]‘s really honest with me. I’m just teaching her how to trust herself. I tell her all the time that my life is not your life — you have your own life. At the end of the day we’re going to be friends,” Norwood predicts. “When she grows up, it’ll be about that friendship that we’ll have. She’ll come to me for any problems that she has.” This month Christie Holland caught up with the singer and actress to hear more about her sixth studio album, starring in Tyler Perry’s new movie and the highs and lows of her twenty year career.

“My inspiration is my daughter, my fiancé, my family and, my fans!” So Brandy, can you tell us a bit about your latest album? My latest album Two Eleven is a reflection of who I am, not only as a person but as an artist. It was a blessing to have the opportunity to not only make music again but to make the music that was true to who I am. RnB music birthed and raised me, so to contribute to that genre felt genuine and what I needed to reconnect with my core fans. Would you say this is your most personal album? All of my albums are personal as they represent a certain time in my life. Music has always been my deepest expression of my feelings within my life experiences. How has it felt re-introducing yourself as an artist again? The reintroduction or the come back to the grind and the work of my life has

been an interesting ride, full of ups and downs. It’s all worth it because I believe that my purpose is inspiring others through my music and the other works I do in the entertainment industry. How has your sound evolved over the years? My sound always evolves because I do. I’ve always challenged myself to try new things as an artist! I would never allow myself to become stuck in a box! Music is too free for that. Who is your inspiration? My inspiration is my daughter, my fiancé, my family and, my fans! Everything I do is for them! What has been the highlight of your career so far? I’ve had so many highlights in my career and I take no moment for granted but meeting and working with Whitney Houston was an unforgettable experience! Moesha was a big part of your life; do you find people still think of you as the character? So many people loved Moesha so it’s very natural for some of the fans to see me and blurt out “Moesha” even though they know my real name! I loved growing up through the eyes of Moesha because she brought a bit of normalcy to my life although she was a television character. Can we ever expect a Moesha reunion? We would love to see the cast get together again! I’m not sure that there would ever be a Moesha reunion because unfortunately two of the main characters (Lamont Bently, and Yvette Wilson) have passed away and it just wouldnt be the same without them. What do you prefer, acting or singing? Acting and singing are both important to me. I love doing both. You worked on America’s Got Talent as a judge, and competed on Dancing with the Stars, tell us about those experiences? It was rewarding being a judge on AGT because I was able to share my experiences with talent that was embarking on the same journey. And DWTS was one of the most challenging experiences of my life! The fear that I felt was unexplainable and almost crippling, but I confronted that fear by dancing through it in front of millions of people! It awakened a confidence and belief I thought I lost forever. DWTS prepared me for the path I’m on now. Last year you mentored the television series, Majors & Minors, what attracted you to the show? What attracted me to Majors and Minors were the children! I felt that because I started as such a young age, they could relate and I could connect with them. They inspired me so much and

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

How will you be spending Mother’s Day? “With my beautiful daughter, my mother and my family.” all I did was give advice and cry because they inspired me and made me so proud! You started out in the entertainment industry at a similar age to the contestants, who were your mentors growing up? My mentors growing up was my dad Willie Norwood and Whitney Houston! What advice would your offer aspiring musicians? My advice to aspiring musicians is never stop dreaming and believing! Stay prepared for every opportunity and always work on your craft! Stay true to who you are and don’t let anyone change you! Which artists are you listening to in the charts right now? I’m loving Miguel right now! His music and melodies really speak to my spirit! Who would you most like to collaborate with? I would love to collaborate with Sade! I think that would be an epic blessing for me. What would you say has been the biggest hurdle you have had to overcome professionally? And personally? My biggest hurdle personally and professionally was believing in myself again and not allowing people to tell me who I am! What does the next 12 months hold in store for you? It’s a great feeling doing what I love to do full time now. Music and acting simultaneously and just discovering more of who I am everyday! I will continue to inspire, entertain, and live my purpose as long as I’m suppose to!

“My mentors growing up was my dad Willie Norwood and Whitney Houston!”

What About Now by Bon Jovi 2013 is set to be Bon Jovi’s year with the release of their twelfth studio album, What About Now. In an interview given to Classic Rock Magazine, guitarist Richie Sambora stated that the album was recorded before his solo album Aftermath of the Lowdown was completed. He and Jon started to write and before they knew it, they were in the studio with the band. Richie Sambora also characterised the new material as a compilation of “different elements”; yet reassured old fans that they will be just as pleased with the new work as they have been with the old for over 30 years. Comedown Machine by The Strokes This month sees the release of rock band, The Strokes fifth studio album, Comedown Machine. The latest release arrives exactly two years after their previous album, Angles. The Strokes are one of the most prominent indierock bands to hail from the US at the dawn of the 21st century and helped start the garage rock revival movement. Their debut album Is This It was ranked number 199 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The 20/20 Experience by Justin Timberlake He’s back! Justin is returning to the music world with his new album, The 20/20 Experience. This will be the pop star’s first solo offering since 2006’s blockbuster sophomore LP, ‘FutureSex/LoveSounds.’ Talking of the album the pop star revealed, “I was just like, ‘Let’s make some music without all the hoopla of, like expectations. Let’s just make something that feels genuine from us.’ And I’m glad we were able to do that way because, for me, it’s the best stuff I’ve ever done.” Girl Talk by Kate Nash Alternative pop singer Kate Nash returned towards the end of 2012 with her EP Death Proof and now she’s set to follow it up with her third full length album, Girl Talk, via her own Have 10p label. According to Nash, Girl Talk, her first LP since 2010’s My Best Friend Is You, is her “mission statement of what it’s like to be a woman.”

Here We Go Again by Christopher Owens Here We Go Again is the second single from Christopher Owens debut album, Lysandre. Written almost entirely in one creative outpouring and recorded with former Girls producer Doug Boehm, Lysandre follows Owens from San Francisco to New York City and onto the French Riviera, before a melancholy return home and a beautifully articulated epilogue. Perfectly framed by intricate instrumentation, gorgeous backing vocals and pristine production, Owens’ enthralling, personal songwriting takes center stage and delivers a heartbreaking rumination on love, longing, friendship, adventure and the thrill of finding an audience for your art.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper have only just finished snapping up awards for their roles in Silver Linings Playbook, however the stars are set to team up again in another David O. Russel directed film formerly known as American Bullsh*t. This will be the third film that the 22-year-old actress and 38-year-old actor star in together: the smash hit Silver Linings Playbook being the first, and Serena, which is set to be released this September. American Bullsh*t focuses on an FBI sting operation in the 1970s called Abscam that leads to the conviction of United States Congressmen.

If they are hooking up or breaking up, we know about it!

It’s the story that has shocked the world; South African Paralympic athlete, Oscar Pistorius, the first amputee to compete in the able-bodied Olympics has been charged with the murder of his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. While the circumstances of the incident are still unclear, there have been rumours that Pistorius fired the gun after mistaking Miss Steenkamp for an intruder. However a police spokesperson announced that this may not be the case, “The SA Police Service were just as surprised to hear on the radio that allegations had been made that the deceased had been perceived to be a burglar,” revealed police spokesperson Denise Beuke. Police are investigating if Oscar Pistorius shot dead his girlfriend in a fit of so-called ‘steroid rage’ - an explosion of aggression caused by performanceboosting steroids. The steroids were reportedly found in the athlete’s home when it was searched following the incident.

Love Actually star, Hugh Grant has become a father for the second time to a son he has named Felix Chang. Felix is the Latin word for lucky and Chang in Chinese means long-lasting. According to the birth certificate, Felix Chang was born at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, West London, where the Duchess of Cambridge is expected to have her child. Grant posted a message on his Twitter page saying; “In answer to some journos. Am thrilled my daughter now has a brother. Adore them both to an uncool degree. They have a fab mum.” Followed by, “And to be crystal clear. I am the Daddy.”

Línea Directa reports on driving in winter Línea Directa is one of the key players in the fight to reduce the number of accidents on our roads. For almost 20 years, it has promoted research into accident rates in order to encourage safe driving habits. Due to the risks involved with driving in winter months, it now offers advice on how to act in adverse weather conditions.

With respect to the car:

With respect to driving:

• Check your car, especially the mechanical components. Pay attention to brakes, lights, windscreen wipers and break fluid, antifreeze and oil levels.

• If you often drive in snow, consider buying winter tyres. In any case, avoid any sudden movements and, as a general rule, do not overtake. Take special care with snow which has turned into ice and always drive at low speeds.

• Don’t forget to check the condition of your tyres including the spare wheel, checking pressure, tread and the grooves of each tyre, which must have a minimum depth of 1.6mm. • Always take a reflective jacket, two warning triangles and a torch with you. Also ensure that your mobile is charged in case you need to use it in an emergency.

• If it is foggy or raining, adapt your speed and distance from the vehicle ahead to the weather conditions. Do not brake suddenly to avoid skidding. • Aim the vehicle’s heating system at the windows to prevent them from fogging up as a result of humidity. • When overtaking, reaching crossroads, leaving tunnels and in open spaces, be careful with any sudden gusts of wind, which might lead to a loss of steering and the vehicle overturning.

“This year, I hope to spend Mother’s Day just as I did last year, with my lovely husband and daughter waking me up with breakfast and a beautiful crayon drawing. Then the three of us travelling to the butterfly farm or the zoo for some quality family time.” Gabriela Morales Horcajada Smallworld Cafe

“I will be exercising my horses in the morning, which is my relaxation, and then eating and having a few drinks with my Mother and family in the afternoon. A perfect day!” Zoe Woods Wood Hairdressing

“I will be up at 04.30 to catch a plane from Luton to return to Marbella!” Pauline Bridgewater Reflections

“With my mum who will have just returned from 4 months travelling around Asia and Australia, while listening to a fraction of what she actually got to do and see, I’ll be thinking how lucky I am that I have someone to aspire to - my lovely mum - who taught me early on that life can be as fulfilling as you want it to be and with so much to see and try, its never too late for adventures. Something that will make that Monday morning school run in the rain easier to bear!” Claire Strutton Sala Group

The eye is the most exotic and alluring feature of the human body. It engages and attracts others to you, so why is it so often neglected? Why not give it as much attention as you would your nails or hair? One of the easiest ways to draw attention to your eyes is by adding mascara. Mascara has the ability not only to make your lashes darker, but also to add length and thickness. But what happens if you are not blessed with Bambi like lashes? “The trend for false eyelashes is still going strong, but they are not ideal for everyone,” explains head hair technician and owner Zoe Wood. “Many of our clients can’t wear false eyelashes, whether it’s because they find them uncomfortable, or they are of a certain age group where

We have been searching the market for a while to find an alternative that will still give you that Lauren Bacall look, where you’re gazing through a veil of lashes. At a recent hair show in London we were introduced to Relian Mascara. We were so impressed with the results, that each member of the team bought one there and then.” Relian extends your eyes lashes by up to 300 per cent, giving the false lash effect. The combination of fibre and gel lengthens and thickens the lashes with immediate results. The more fibre you use, the more volume you will achieve. It is smooth and gentle when applying and very easy to remove. “Many of our more mature clients, who have lost the majority of their lashes, were a bit sceptical to say the least, but after giving them a quick demonstration, they couldn’t believe the results. To say that the mascara has flown out the salon would be an understatement.” The Black Box series also comes in a gorgeous gift box, making it the perfect pre-

Relian Mascara is the perfect combination; you obtain longer and thicker eyelashes without the use of eyelash curlers or fake lashes, the ideal solution for those of you who don’t have much time to spend on applying makeup. An Intraceuticals Oxygen facial is a unique experience, providing instant results that you can see and feel. Known as “Hollywood’s best kept secret”, these unique Oxygen Facials are used by many celebrities, including Madonna who offers a rare endorsement: “I love the Intraceuticals treatments and so does my face”. In fact Madonna loves them so much she has even bought her own machine (£10,000)

So how does it work? Dehydration of the skin is a condition that affects more people that you would think - a whopping 98 per cent, to be precise! The main component that combats this lack of water in our skin is Hyaluronic Acid, which is produced naturally by our skin; it is also one of the main elements that make up the tissue known as the extra cellular matrix. The best way to illustrate this is to imagine your skin cells as the bricks in a wall and the cement holding all of the bricks together and giving it structure, is the extra cellular fluid primarily comprising Hyaluronic Acid. So if you understand this you will see how impor-

tant it is to maintain the production of Hyaluronic Acid so as to give your skin structure and plumpness. Intraceuticals’ range of Oxygen Infusion facials consists primarily of low molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid, the serums which contain a cocktail of vitamins such as A,C & E as well as soothing Green Tea and Aloe Vera and which Sofia would infuse into the skin. The treatment uses a technology called hyperbaric pressure to push in the serums which fill the intercellular spaces, plumping up the skin as well as giving it luminosity; the treatment is painless and refreshing. This procedure can be applied before special occasions, as make–up goes on beautifully afterwards and skin will look plump and hydrated. Celebrity makeup artist Gina Brooke says, “It really comes down to the skin; the foundation to beautiful make-up begins with the skin.” “A girl after our own hearts,” says Sofia. all you have to do is relax and let the bandages sculpt and tone your body while the minerals are absorbed into your skin and the clay draws out toxins.”

Unlike other inch loss treatments Universal Contour Wrap doesn’t rely on dehydration to get results. In fact to maximise your personal results you’re encouraged to drink plenty of water after treatments to continue the inch loss, detox and cleansing process. So whether you’re looking to kick-start a slimming plan or target a few stubborn inches you can rely on Universal Contour Wrap to deliver instant results that will keep friends and family wondering how you did it.

Developed by Dr Richard Strem, after extensive research into beneficial minerals used in spa treatments, the treatment involves being wrapped in 25-30 elasticated bandages that have been pre-soaked in a warm, mineral-rich clay solution. Lynn then recommends 10 minutes on a powerplate to get your metabolism moving. “After this

TIPS T from a TRAINER Our resident fitness and nutrition expert, Paul Isaacs, looks at how we can overcome our dread of exercise to kick-start a new fitness regime that really delivers results.

wo of the key parts of my job are managing clients’ expectations and helping them to set achievable goals. Most of us are unrealistic when we set out to make changes to our fitness or nutrition patterns. Some of us simply don’t believe that we can ever make any significant progress and we get into the habit of using this ‘defence mechanism’ to sabotage our chances of success, while some of us simply expect too much too soon. This too is normally unrealistic. We can all dig out old photographs of ourselves at the age of 21 and in the best shape of our lives as a benchmark for how we would like to look, but if we are now in our 40s or 50s, can we seriously expect to effectively recapture the same body shape of someone half our age? The truth is that we can ALL make significant progress, but the level of improvement in your fitness and body shape will be dependent on your commitment and effort. Many of us use the excuse that there simply isn’t time to exercise, that life gets in the way. Deep down, we all know that this is nonsense. We seem to have no trouble finding the time to meet friends for lunch or sitting in front of the TV. And it’s ever so easy to get into the habit of seeing our friends and peers getting themselves into great shape and saying

36

“It’s OK for you, but I would never be able to stick to it”. All of us can get into great shape (whether our aim is to lose or gain weight, or simply to tone up) even if it seems to represent a challenge of momentous proportions! It’s really important to remain focused on your goal(s) and not to become disillusioned. One of the best ideas is to set yourself lots of short-term targets. For instance, rather than saying that you want to lose 10 kilos in time for the summer, it may be more realistic to say to yourself that you want to drop a dress or jeans size within the first 6 weeks of your fitness regime. Or perhaps you have a designer outfit that you bought a few years ago that’s been gathering dust on a hanger in the wardrobe as it doesn’t quite fit, but you still yearn for the day that you can fit back into it. Once this first target is reached and you realise just how great it feels to get there, it will give you the confidence and courage to set yourself further, attainable targets that can be reached within short-term timeframes. This will make you realise that your hard work is all worthwhile and that it is producing a series of results, rather than it feeling like a chore or a ‘long slog’ with no end in sight. FRAC3 LASER REJUVENATION ( for the face ) This treatment stimulates the production of collagen through localized thermal destruction in the dermis, which then stimulates the production of new collagen. Treatments are every 10 days - 2 weeks. ACNE TREATMENT This is for mild to moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris infections due to an increase in blood supply in affected areas. Laser energy will be absorbed in the infected area heat is then generated there which will destroy the bacteria. Treatment in courses of 5 every 8 days 2 weeks.

TATTOO REMOVAL This laser system delivers powerful short laser light pulses which pass through the skin and break up colour images. The remnant of these images are then naturally removed by the body's natural defense system, hence why you only need to have a treatment once every 2-3 months. PIGMENTATION Pigmented lesions usually contain an increased number of melanocytes in the Basel area of the epidermis. The photoacustic effect of the laser causes a breakdown of the cells that contain the pigment.

ADDITIONAL TREATMENTS: Hair removal, scar tissue, open pores.

The Paris

B

South America

uenos Aires has been reinventing itself since the 19th century. The city has a unique buzz created by it’s contagious, creative energy. It’s this zest for life, plus the blend of gourmet eateries, vibrant designer boutiques, wild nightlife and abundance of intriguing attractions that makes Buenos Aires one of Latin America’s sexiest and most intoxicating destinations. One of the city’s most famed sites; the spectacular Cementerio de la Recoleta is an astonishing necropolis lavish enough to rival Père Lachaise in Paris and home to hundreds of renowned corpses including the famed Maria Eva Duarte de Perón, aka Evita. Wander for hours in this amazing cemetery embellished with impressive statues and marble tombs. Originally a public cemetery, it is now more difficult to get into than the grand surrounding residences! For another unique experience, take a trip to Tierra Santa, the world’s first religious theme park, where every thirty minutes a 20-metre plastic Jesus rises from the earth! The Museo Evita, dedicated to the world’s most famous Argentine, is situated in a mansion where her charity, the Eva Perón Foundation, once housed single mothers with children. Everything from historical books and newspaper articles to fingerprints and videos are stored in this captivating gallery, however the ‘shining stars’ have to be her fabulous outfits; dresses, hats, blouses and shoes, many of which she wore on her tours throughout Europe. You can’t visit the city synonymous with tango without hitting the dance floor yourself. Skip the touristy La Boca and head for El Niño Bien where the locals strut their stuff.

42

However, boys, be careful, checking

out a lady from across the room is considered an invitation to dance with her centre stage!

It’s not just dance the Argentinians are besotted with, football is life in Argentina and a visit to the national stadium, where Argentina won the World Cup in 1978, is a fantastic way to experience the drama. When in Buenos Aires, be sure to sample a crispy medialuna (Argentinian croissant) at Café Tortoni, the city’s most traditional café. Founded in 1858, it has retained its delightful charm despite the daily plethora of animated tourists filling the tables. For dinner, try one of Argentina’s trendy parrillas, to sample some of the city’s worldfamous meat. Argentines eat, on average, 64kg of beef each year, that’s 1.2 kilograms per week! So follow the locals’ lead and head to El Trapiche to demolish a 300g steak for a pittance, or visit ‘the best parrilla in Buenos Aires’, Cabaña Las Lilas and taste their legendary grass-fed beef all supplied from the owner’s personal ranch!

Looking for a glimpse of the city’s past wealth and grandeur? Devour the opulent and expensive high tea at the Alvear Palace Hotel or further blow the budget at El Bistro. Headed by award-winning chef, Mariano Cid de la Paza, whose creations are as striking as the Philippe Starckdesigned interior, this notable restaurant attracts the rich and famous, much like the lavish Faena Hotel and Universe within which it is located. Housed in an historic former granary, The Faena combines Buenos Aires’ extraordinary past and present. More than a hotel, the Faena universe encompasses an art gallery, gourmet market, The ‘School of Good Living’ offering classes on dance, cooking and wine alongside the ‘archetypal’ spa, swimming pool and restaurants. Alternatively, the aforementioned, Alvear Palace Hotel is as sumptuous as its glorious high tea. Each of the 197 palace rooms and suites are individually decorated with Empire furnishings, fine art and antiques. Plus the views are out-of-this-world, from the highest floors, you can see Recoleta’s patchwork of plazas and parks, the river and (almost) Uruguay. Another Recoleta gem, Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt, boasts a 25-meter swimming pool, so beautiful you will want to swim all day.

One visit to Buenos Aires and you’ll understand why so many people visit this cosmopolitan metropolis and struggle to leave.

HOME COUTURE This month, in her column for SOCIETY MARBELLA, Andrea Böck, Managing Director of Ambience Home Design, reports on Maison & Object. Andrea Böck, interior designer and founder of Ambience Home Design S.L. has, over the last decade, worked on a variety of projects throughout Europe, the Caribbean Islands and Middle East, assisting her clients in the very challenging task of refurbishing, decorating and furnishing their homes down to the very last detail.

A Soulful Affair M

MAISON & OBJET

aison & Object – the mother of all fairs in Europe I dare say, but not too loud, lest my Italian friends get cross, but for me, the marking difference I see between Maison & Object and other known fairs, such as Milan, is, that something about Paris and its bazar-style, mix-match, and eclectic fair that gets your senses sizzling. It’s a great way to start the year for us designers as it’s the first big fair in January and showcases upcoming trends. I find Maison & Objet to be a source of inspiration, it’s a treasure chest full of surprises, and like a treasure hunter, you go from stand to stand and find creations that give you the next clue to the next best finding, and it simply leaves you inspired to create. You never know what you’re going to find, which makes it so exiting! You get to see all sorts of items and an extensive range of creations. From high-end products such as Kenzo, Baxter, Ger-

vasoni and co, a lot of French classic and rustic style suppliers of course, to more artisan style findings, such as handbags and accessories, artwork, lots of young and unknown artists hoping to be discovered, dog beds, dog toys, sculptors and their sculptures, fabrics, papers, lights, candles, Muppets, chocolatiers, jewelers and intriguingly enough, you also find artists offering you the most bizarre things that need peculiar explanation. It’s mindblowing how creative everyone is, so the whole combination of the human imagination put to use and rendered into something solid and meaningful, is what makes Maison & Objet what it is! A fabulous fair that gets you enthused. Although I didn’t see any big revelations or shocking new trends that would lead us in a completely new direction in 2013, I’d like to dedicate this piece to creativity, which is in fact the essence of any and all fairs in our design world, whether it’d be a subtle or outrageous creation, I love it!

A RAY OF KNITTED LIGHT The trend of industrial furniture was strong last year and now, beautified light-bulbs carry the legacy. I love these knitted lightbulbs, so original and different. As predicted in December’s issue last year – it is all about knitting in 2013, so I’m very pleased with this proposal by Llot Llov as well as their Ray lamp, another knitted knock-out. It hangs on to things, wraps objects together, it follows the user to where it is needed, forming sculptures as it goes. This flexible lamp and its 12 metre chord, is intended to adjust to one’s changing needs and visual intent. It can easily hang over a dining table, or readingcorner, as it can so elegantly lie on the floor or over a chair, - a more daring approach to exhibit a light. It travels from Baviera where it’s knitted from Merino wool imported from Italy, to Portugal where the shade is manufactured, back to Berlin for final assembly. A unique and complete European design and make that is designated to create a ray of light in a very distinctive way.

Jesper Hertz Chief Representative of Nordea Bank in Spain 10.02.2013

T

he eurozone is widely tipped to be one of the worst-performing regions in global economic terms for much of 2013. While the outlook in the US and China has brightened latterly, many European economies remain mired in recession. Despite the laudable initiatives taken by the European Central Bank last year to address the euro crisis, policy responses such as fiscal austerity, and the need for further deleverage, continue to undermine at least nearterm prospects for economic activity and unemployment (now at a record 11.8% for the eurozone as a whole).

So why has this gloomy scenario not resulted in a weaker euro? To

begin with, part of the euro’s recent strength can be attributed to anticipated further quantitative easing in the US, which has weakened the greenback. Another factor is the early repayment by eurozone banks of three-year loans to the ECB, which will drain €137 billion from the system and put upward pressure on euro-

54

THE EURO

CAVEAT EMPTOR

zone interest rates, thus enhancing euro returns. However, once such euro-supportive forces have run their course, the continued absence of regional growth may require eurozone rates to fall. If, by that time, other countries have expanded sufficiently to raise rates, this will widen interestrate differentials between the euro and the currencies of those countries to an extent that will lower the former’s investment appeal. A weaker euro might be welcome news for eurozone exporters, but stiff competition, in particular from China, which is highly adept at manipulating its currency’s exchange rate as the situation demands, and a Japan that may seek to drive the yen to undervalued levels in a desperate attempt to revive its moribund export sector, imply only meagre benefits. Even the bright spots are dim at best The decision to postpone more stringent regulations in the banking sector via Basel III until 2019 (instead

of 2015) may encourage banks to expand lending activities in the interim, especially to those who need it, such as small- and medium-sized companies and homeowners, and this, in turn, may help spur growth. But, post-crisis, European banks have been highly risk averse in their lending behaviour, and an extension of present conditions is unlikely to have much economic impact overall, given the continued need for banks to deleverage. The ongoing eurozone crisis remains the single biggest threat to global growth. Although sentiment has improved of late, most recently due to evidence of a slowdown (but no turnaround) in manufacturing contraction and successful bond auctions in Spain and Portugal, it remains ultimately fragile. Confidence is likely to wane swiftly if the region fails to show signs of sustainable economic recovery soon, a possibility to which the euro will continue to be vulnerable going forward.

TORQUE TALK

Our in-depth motoring review

ASTON MARTIN DB9

62

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the Aston Martin DB9

I

first drove Aston Martin’s gorgeous but flawed DB9 in June 2004, and it has been steadily improved since. Now, nearly a decade later, the latest DB9 is not just the car I always hoped it could be, but is actually better.

Aston Martin makes cars that appeal to the heart as well as the mind. Their cars ooze class, breeding and wealth with a typical British understatement that is not as in-your-face as their more flamboyant Italian rivals. The company has also been

63

TORQUE TALK

Aston Martin makes cars that appeal to the heart as well as the mind. wise to embrace and cultivate its James Bond 007 association, a priceless brand booster that money simply cannot buy. The original DB9 was the first Aston Martin model to use the then new VH (VerticalHorizontal) platform that endows the car with a good balance between low weight and high structural stiffness. Along the way, this balance has slowly been altered, with greater stiffness the key to even better ride and handling. For the 2013 Model Year, the DB9 is now based on the Generation 4 VH platform, which it shares with Aston’s all-new Vanquish flagship. This latest VH platform uses more carbon-fibre in its construction for even better stiffness and lower weight, and the dynamic improvements derived from this are significant. For starters, the overall structural rigidity of the body has been improved by 20% for the Coupe and 30% for the Volante, making it possible to use more compliant suspension settings with no compromise in handling. Kerb weight is also down by 15kg, although 12kg of this comes from the switch to carbon-ceramic brakes as standard. The tall, stubby noses of many new cars show that the latest pedestrian impact safety regulations are having a big negative impact on styling. As the

64

aesthetic wow factor shared by all Aston Martin models relies on a long, low bonnet line, short tail and a svelte Coke bottle shape in between, this is a serious problem.

clear of the now lower engine, and these two developments allow the new car to meet the pedestrian regulations with no styling compromises.

However, the changes in the latest VH4 platform have allowed the engineers to lower the V12 engine that powers the DB9 and Vanquish by a significant 19mm. In addition, a new bonnet structural design helps to absorb the impact of a pedestrian’s head sufficiently to keep it

A positive unintended consequence of the lower engine installation is the lower centreof-gravity, which, together with the near perfect 51/49 front/rear weight distribution, aids the cars dynamic behaviour. For once, government safety regulations have created a good result all round.

TORQUE TALK

The new DB9 looks a lot like its predecessor, and in this respect Aston Martin have quite rightly taken the view that ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ In reality though, even though the cars form and proportions are similar, over 70% of its alloy body panels are new. The re-imagining of the iconic DB9 styling also gave the designers and engineers a chance to refine the details. Apart from further improving eye appeal in a way that brings it bang up-to-date, their aim was make the new car more aerodynamically efficient to the benefit of performance, stability and fuel economy. Starting at the nose, the new grille is slightly larger, which gives the DB9 a more assertiveness face while improving airflow to the engine cooling system. The sharp crease line on the deeply sculpted side sills running the length of the DB9’s flanks between front and rear wheel arches, visually beefs up the car, helping to create a more muscular and planted stance. The chromed trim over the side intakes, incorporating the side repeater indicators, now extends aft into the front of the doors, and is another element that helps to accentuate the long and low-slung look. The deeper front spoiler incorporates a larger air intake and carbon-fibre lip. At the rear, the deep valance

incorporates a dark coloured insert that highlights the polished exhaust tips, while simultaneously hiding the rear parking sensors. This insert also performs a visual light and shade illusion, reducing the perceived height of the rear panel. Finally, the bodycoloured diffuser below it finishes off the rear on a notional line that appears to sweep gracefully up from the side sills.

While the carbon-fibre front spoiler lip comes from last year’s Virage model, the integral boot lid spoiler takes its cues from the outgoing DBS, giving the new DB9 a more hard-core GT demeanour. The shape and size of these spoilers owe as much to wind-tunnel testing as they do to pure aesthetics, and significantly reduce lift at speed. The early DB9s handled quite well, but their ride-handling balance was not quite

... their aim was make the new car more aerodynamically efficient to the benefit of performance, stability and fuel economy.

65

TORQUE TALK right. The optional Sports Pack introduced in 2006 went a long way to sharpening up the handling, which was now impressive on a smooth road, but if you ticked that option the ride quality on bumpy roads went out the window. Since then, the DB9’s suspension set up has gone through several iterations, culminating in the DBS of 2007, which itself owed much to the DBR9 racecar. This also formed the basis of the short-lived Virage, launched in 2011, to bridge the gap between the DB9 and DBS. While the new DB9 takes most of its bodywork cues from the Virage and the rear spoiler from the DBS, 50-percent of its underpinnings in terms of platform, chassis and engine are new. The significant mechanical changes start with the lusty V12 motor, whose top end has finally gained variable valve timing. Looking back, Aston Martin’s 5,935cc, DOHC, 48-valve V12 hails from the era

when the company was Ford-owned, and was originally created in the late 1990s when Cosworth married two Ford Duratec V6 blocks on a single crankshaft. The first incarnation of this engine debuted with 420bhp in the DB7 Vantage of 1999, and it was producing 514bhp by the time the Vanquish S ceased production in 2007. With ever tightening emissions laws on the horizon, it has long been acknowledged that it is only a matter of time before Aston Martin will need an all-new turbocharged engine family if it is to meet future emissions and economy expectations.

In that respect, it is a wonder that the firm did not adopt variable valve timing earlier, as this technology has been used on mass production cars for two decades to boost power and economy and reduce emissions. VVT also enhances low-end torque, another weak point of this engine family. In its latest AM11 guise with VVT, the big V12 seems to have at last come of age, with 510bhp at 6,800rpm and a healthy 620Nm of torque at 5,500rpm. On the road, the improvement to low-end twist is palpable from the word go. From rest, or indeed any speed, the DB9 now has a spring in its step that I never felt with the previous versions. Where the old motor, even in the lighter, smaller V12 Vantage, does not really feel like it is cooking with gas till you have over 3,500rpm on the clock, the latest VVT-equipped version pulls with real urgency from just over 1,500rpm.

Accelerating firmly from a rolling start in second gear, there is now enough instant mid-range grunt on tap to break the big rear tyres free of the tarmac on a dry road. This sends the traction control warning light into a tizzy while the limited-slip differential and stability control frantically work to gather things together. Even the original six-speed automatic from 2004 was not half bad, delivering smooth upshifts and a lovely aggressive throttle ‘blip’ on the way down that made anyone sound like a hero on a twisty road. The latest Touchtronic 2 six-speeder with electronic shift-by-wire control is even faster and slicker, perfectly complementing the sharper throttle response and more incisive chassis. The latest generation engine and gearbox form a perfect partnership that is hard to beat, and feels as effective as a well measured dual-clutch setup. This faster shifting gearbox and the

66

TORQUE TALK enhanced torque help the 1,785kg DB9 rocket to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds, and on to its 293km/h (183mph) top speed. Most modern high performance cars have buttons you can play with to make them louder and friskier, and the DB9 is no exception. The Sport button on the centre console stiffens the suspension, sharpens the power steering, throttle and gearbox responses, and opens a control valve in the exhaust system that lets the car exercise its vocal chords to the full. Big wheels always look good, and the standard 8.5J and 11.0J x 20-inch five-spoke alloys with 245/35ZR20 and 295/30ZR20 Pirelli PZero rubber perfectly fill out the big wheel arches, helping to give the car its purposeful stance. My test car was fitted with the optional ten-spoke wheels in the same dimensions, which definitely look more sophisticated than the standard five-spoke version. While these large diameter wheels are a blessing for the designers, they are a nightmare for the chassis engineers whose task is to produce a suspension system that can maintain a comfortable ride despite the low profile rubber.

marginal level on roads that depart from billiard table smoothness. That said, on the right road, this setting is a real blast, with the all round sharper reflexes turning the DB9 into a big hooligan’s machine that belies its gentlemanly demeanour. If you can imagine a Savile Row attired city gent shedding his pin-stripe suit in mid flight to reveal a figure hugging costume and cape, that about sums it up. It is just as well then that the new carbonceramic brake system is a match for the potential exuberance on tap. This was an option on the previous DB9, but is now standard as it was on the short-lived Virage. The vented, cross-drilled front brake discs are 398mm diameter and clamped by six-pot-alloy monoblock calipers, while the rear axle carries 360mm diameter vented, cross-drilled discs with four-pot alloy monoblock calipers. No Aston Martin test can be filed without comment on its exquisite cabin. This is simply a wonderful place to be, and the quality of design and execution of

This is beyond the capability of conventional springs and dampers, and all the top supercars like the Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C have adopted active damping to overcome this ridehandling debacle. The DB9 now treads a similar path with a three-stage Active Damping System that gives the driver the choice of Normal, Sport and Track modes. This does exactly what it says on the tin, with a crystal clear difference between each setting. I started my drive in Normal mode, and was impressed by the perfect weighting of the power steering and the way the suspension breathes over bumps. A supple low speed secondary ride belies the short sidewalls of the low profile rubber, while body control is very convincing when you pick up the pace. This setting makes the DB9 a genuinely comfortable GT car for covering continents in. Sport is the setting of choice when you want to attack a twisty road enthusiastically. It noticeably sharpens up turn-in to bends and reduces body roll through them. Importantly, although the ride is firmed up, the suspension still retains good compliance to keep things on course when you encounter mid-corner bumps. Track mode? Don’t even go there unless you can find a really smooth road, as suspension firmness is ramped up to a

“Good things come to those who wait.” Aston Martin celebrates its 100th Anniversary this year, and the new DB9 and Vanquish are fitting birthday tributes. the leather and Alcantara interior trim is truly magnificent. The new DB9 has a much improved centre console control arrangement, and its new sat-nav system is halfway decent at last.

The new DB9 is also significantly cheaper than its Vanquish sibling, which shares the Gen 4 VH platform, but is powered by a hot-rodded 565bhp version of the AM11 V12 motor.

While the latest DB9 is more expensive than the outgoing model, it is cheaper than last year’s Virage, which is not a happy thought for the 1,100 buyers of that short lived model.

Speaking to a handful of friends whom I knew had signed up for both the new DB9 and Vanquish, I was keen to learn their respective reasons, knowing that money was not an issue for any of them.

Interestingly, it came down to subjective styling, some preferring the sharpened up but still conservative DB9, while the others were attracted by the more futuristic lines of the Vanquish. If you fall for the DB9, be assured that this beautiful car is now thoroughly convincing in all aspects of its dynamic behaviour, engaging the keen driver with a synergy it has never possessed before. The punchline to a classic Guinness TV ad famously said, “Good things come to those who wait.” Aston Martin celebrates its 100th Anniversary this year, and the new DB9 and Vanquish are fitting birthday tributes. SEMANA SANTA By Padre Peter

T

he processions of Semana Santa (Holy Week) have a long tradition, and are held all over Spain. But whereas in Spain north of the Sierra Moreno the processions tend to take place with all due solemnity, it is only here in Andalusia that one can experience the full and jubilant flowering of this centuries old tradition. At the risk of being regarded as a heretic, whilst it is generally held that Sevilla is preeminent in this field, I would maintain that Málaga is, in fact, far superior. In Sevilla the narrow and winding streets only allow small pasos (floats) carried on the shoulders of between thirty and fifty costaleros (from costal – the padded bag used to protect heads and shoulders). In Málaga the great tronos (floats – sometimes weighing 5000 kilos) need upwards of ten times that number to navigate the streets with a surprising dexterity. This is due to the skilled overseer (capataz), who guides the team with a ceremonial hammer (el llamador - caller) by ringing a bell

70

attached to the trono. And come Maundy Thursday the Spanish Foreign Legion appears to form a bodyguard to the Blessed Virgin and the Cristo de la Legión, as they sing the Novio de la Muerte (Bridegroom of Death), their regimental slow march. They join the hundreds of nazarenos and penitentes (now both men and women) who accompany the floats, each belonging to their own Cofradia or Hermandad (brotherhood) and each distinguished by a distinctive costume. The main purpose of the procession is for the laity to bring Faith to the streets, away from the narrow confines of the church. The only significant section of the community not represented is the priesthood. And it is significant that even at times of the greatest persecution of the Church, as during the Republic or the Civil War, the processions continued, virtually without intermission, and it was not unknown for avowed anarchists to take part!

This ceremony belongs to the people, not the church.

This tradition dates back in Málaga to the conquest of the city from the Moors in 1487. Dozens of churches and convents were founded, and soon fraternities were formed for their support and for the support and insurance of members. Such brotherhoods were bound by statutes framed in accordance with the dictates of the Council of Trent (15451563) to ensure that they were based on true Catholic teaching. To demonstrate their piety, the cofradias began to carry their imagenes into the streets to celebrate Easter and Holy Week. When in 1521 the Marqués de Tarifa returned to Spain from a pilgrimage in the Holy Land, he introduced the Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross) into church worship. From this grew the custom of forming a procession to perform these Stations in the open air. These processions became more and more elaborate, as brotherhood vied with brotherhood, gradually giving rise to the processions that we witness today, centered around representations of Christ and his mother. As can clearly be seen as the imagen slowly emerges onto the street, some of these representations are worth 350,000 euros or

following the Cristo del Perdón, whose fraternity members have petitioned for his pardon. Drums and trumpets play solemn music and occasionally a saeta is to be heard as someone spontaneously bursts into song in praise of Christ or the virgin. When this happens it is normal for the trono to pause, and for the crowd to remain silent. The Nazarenos and Penitentiales wear distinctive costumes which differ from cofradia to cofradia. The

tunics are different colours, depending on the Cofradia or Hermandad, and whilst the

Penitentiales wear a hood which covers the face and hangs behind the head, the Nazarenos wear a capirote inside the hood, which raises it to a high point. The origin of this cone is unknown, but may date from the practice of the Inquisition to make penitents wear such a garment (like a dunce’s cap!) The face is covered as a sign of penitence, but on Easter Sunday the headdress is removed to expose the face as a sign

of rejoicing. Whilst the Penitentiales carry their crosses, the Nazarenos may carry cirios (long wax candles) or ciriales (elaborate silver staffs as a sign of office). The candles are a target for the monaguillos; children who run alongside making bigger and bigger balls from the wax dripping from the candles. By the end of Holy Week some of these balls are large indeed! Unlike some parts of Spain, Semana Santa in Andalusia is not a grim and sombre affair. The crowds are cheerful, and people wear their Sunday best (it is bad form not to do so) in order to celebrate something that is at the very heart of the Christian faith. And if you are standing for hours on end, you very quickly begin to feel the need for some form of sustenance. This traditionally should take the form of a torrijo, which is a slice of bread dipped in wine and honey and coated with egg yolk, then fried. This is clearly a perhaps not-so-distant cousin of the English “Poor knights of Windsor”, which should be made with sherry, and is a dish which may well have had its origin in Spain!

more. The cofradias who own these tronos can be divided into three types: Penitenciales, De Gloria and Sacramentales. It is the Penitenciales who participate in the Holy Week processions. Until the late 18th century these were joined by the Flagellantes who bloodily whipped themselves around the route. They are still to be found occasionally today, but their beating tends to be rather more symbolic than penitential! Even so, today, some of the Penitenciales will walk bare foot and carry crosses to expiate for sins committed the previous year. This is no mean feat, considering that the procession can last up to or exceeding twelve hours! In Málaga a prisoner released from the penitentiary at Alhaurin in memory of Barabbas also takes part,

The innovative French cuisine at the renowned Albert y Simon restaurant in San Pedro is a unique, culinary experience which fuses flavourful, nutritious foods with beautiful presentation. deally situated on a bustling corner in San Pedro, everything about this restaurant clearly endorses the fact that it is family owned and managed. Award winning chef Albert Benisty works his magic in the kitchen while his brother, Simon, manages the front-ofhouse team. Passion for cooking has been passed down through the generations of the Benisty family. After training in Sweden, Albert became the head chef in his father’s restaurant, Le Soufflé in Estepona, where he was awarded one of the first Michelin stars in Andalucía. After this the brothers went on to open their first restaurant in Nueva Atalaya, followed by the San Pedro establishment, which is now rightly recognized as one of the premier dining experiences on the Coast. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by the charming Simon and, after agreeing it was a little chilly to sit on the terrace, we were shown to our table. Much thought has been put into the decor

72

of this restaurant; with its classic tavern style, romantic lighting and vast wine cellar, it is elegant yet unpretentious. The à la carte and set dinner menus are suitably luxurious. It is rare to peruse a menu and conclude that everything, without exception, is worthy of consideration. Simon explained that the

tastes and dishes are regularly initiated, so diners would be well advised to ask for recommendations when ordering. I would also suggest that diners take advantage of Simon’s vast knowledge of wines. He was awarded the Outstanding Merit in Wines and Spirits WSET and he is more than happy to suggest wine pairings for each course.

COSTA CUISINE

Mastering the art of French cooking is considered by many to be the pinnacle of culinary achievement. We were served a selection of intricate dishes - foams, purées, uncanny textures and countless unexpected flavour combinations all guaranteed to persuade a greedy curiosity to sample as many as possible. We started with the exquisitely presented goat’s cheese, accompanied by the fabulously expansive, complex flavour of quince jelly and walnuts. Other options included an accomplished dish of scallops complemented by a parmesan and black truffle dressing and the marinated salmon with raspberry vinaigrette, served with apple and pineapple which added a sweet note to the dish. For mains, the wild sea bass was brought back to earth by the fresh, home-made pasta and black truffle sauce, while the berry sauce lent an acidic punch to the delicate venison.

My sweet tooth was satisfied by the decadent pud of “Torrija,” white bread soaked in milk and cooked in the oven, with caramelised banana, smooth coconut sauce and ice cream. Saving the best till last, the grand finale was Albert’s unmissable signature dish, the Grand Marnier Soufflé. Albert y Simon has perfected the art of making dishes which not only fill the stomach but also the heart of the person who eats them. This establishment is the epitome of high quality and creative French cuisine and all at very reasonable prices. Deserving of all their accolades and fiercely loyal following, the brothers bring a modern touch to an undeniably French fine dining experience. On one such occasion the aboyeur (the chef at the hot plate) suddenly collapsed. The hotel medic was summoned, but, alas, to no avail. With three hundred diners the service could not be halted. With great gentleness the sous-chef shoved the supine aboyeur under the hot plate, and the service continued. When the last guest left, the defunct was pulled out from under the appliance and an ambulance and a doctor were summoned. “When did this happen?” asked the doctor. “Just now”, replied the Chef, “as we were clearing up, he keeled over.” “Ah!” said the doctor, bending down to touch the corpse. “Ah yes! He’s still warm!”. At times, when dealing with trainees and students, one wondered whether or not the being in question was indeed actually still warm. It was at times interesting to speculate on what was currently going on in what passed for a brain.

I remember Fiona. A pleasant and likeable girl, endowed plenteously by nature in many ways, but who lacked a certain something above the neck line. On one occasion, hearing a commotion, I turned round to behold Fiona with a tongue of fire coming from the top of her head. Confusing my sacred and secular callings, and mindful of the miracle at Pentecost, I was on the point of sinking to my

When I was head of a catering school the lecturer in charge of housekeeping handed me the examination paper of one of her students. Question: “What are you doing when you knead, rinse, press flat, shake and hang out to dry?” Answer: “Bread and butter pudding”. We had similar geniuses in the kitchen.

In reply to the question 76

knees in the presence of the Holy Ghost when the student standing next to her, with great presence of mind, smacked her smartly over the head with his cloth, thereby extinguishing the flames. I bore down on her. “What,” I enquired, “are you doing?” “Well, Chef, you see, I lit the grill thing, and put my head inside to see if it was on!” I fear that sarcasm overcame my better nature. “And was it?”. We just stopped her in time before she returned her singed hair to the salamander! Fiona was not alone. Two young female trainees were busy making asparagus soup. For some unknown whimsical reason, as I passed them I said “You know, ladies, when you eat asparagus your wee-wee smells!” As I moved away one said to the other “What’d ‘e say?” To which the reply came in broad Brummie, “If you eat this muck your piss stinks!” I pretended not to hear, but in a kitchen full of students one had to keep one’s ears and eyes sharply open. At ten o’clock one morning I observed Adrian with a vast bowl of mashed potato. “Adrian, dear boy”, I asked, “what time does the lunch service start?” “Twelve o’clock, Chef”. “And so, dear boy,” I asked, “how do you intend to keep your mashed potato warm?” His panicked reply was a sort of grunting quack. “Well, Adrian,” I suggested, “place the mashed potato in a bowl. Place the bowl

in the bain marie. Cover it, and pray that the lunchtime clients are all polite English people who will not comment on lukewarm potato.” About a minute later I heard an agonised squawk. “Chef! It’s gone all mushy!” I turned to find him carefully spooning his mash into hot water. On another occasion, when ordered to wash the lettuce, he used Fairy Liquid. And it was in the same kitchen that I asked a young female student sporting gargantuan grey leg warmers under her whites, resulting in a rather heated countenance, to watch the stove. The solid top was packed with pans on the verge of boiling. A minute or two later I was talking to a colleague when I noticed him looking over my shoulder with an expression somewhere between apoplexy and shell shock. I turned. The solid top was completely clear. In front of it stood Charlotte, gazing at it deep in concentration. “What!?” I spluttered. With unassailable logic she replied “I couldn’t see the top with all

those pots on it!” It was also she who on one occasion proffered me what looked like a very small yellow cake with cracked brown edges. Mystified, I enquired what it was. “A fried egg” she replied indignantly. For once I was rendered speechless. Seeing my reaction her friend remarked “See! I told you not to cut the fat off!”

had been so long. The attendant gave profuse apologies and explained “… and I fear, your highness, that there was somebody seated over the water hole…!”

But it is not only amongst the lowly ‘escrocs’ that incidents occur. Customers can also at times display strange behaviour. At one large hotel in west London, a middle eastern sheik is in the habit of booking an entire floor for himself and his entourage. The management wisely clears the floor, as his servants have a habit of lighting small fires in the middle of bedrooms, on which they cook, and round which they eat. On one occasion, as they ate, the sheik was very thirsty, and his attendant kept disappearing into the bathroom, returning with a glass of water. At one point he was gone for longer than usual, and on his return the sheik asked indignantly why he

50 SHADES OF PINK You would never have said that it was a winter midweek evening, it certainly didn’t feel grey, cold or boring! Quite the contrary – it was an overwhelmingly pink, exciting and fun held in Nueva Andalucía, as over 140 of the coast’s most fashionable and generous ladies came together, flying the flag of Costa Women, in aid of Positively Pink charity. Many sponsors and supporters ensured the night definitely went with the loudest bang heard in a while in winter Marbella – from plush pink decorations courtesy of Reviva Weddings, to beautiful floral arrangements (you can imagine the colour!) from Virginia Florista, delicious cupcakes and macaroons from Sweet Things By Fi, gift cava bottles, champagne prizes and a la copita for each guest from Marbella Wine Warehouse, and many more brilliant prizes from other sponsors, including FashionVilla.

He is in good health, and soon to be castrated. He has no problem with other dogs. Unfortunately his owner is no longer able to keep him. Bruno is the most handsome boy whose photos do not do him justice. He has ice blue eyes, which are amazing. We think he would be more suited to a home with a garden. If you would like to meet Bruno or find out more about him please call: Pat on 620 354 885 or famaspain.com Fama’s policy is never to have a healthy dog put down
