The French designer’s style is inspired by 70’s singers, and so is the 2019 collection “Toute La Vie”: Sassy and urban meets vintage rock accents. Flocked silk georgette and handmade embroideries in gold, silk crepe and tulle are the high quality fabrics that have been used for this special collection. Within the campaign imagery, a couple celebrates their love under the neon lights of Pigalle. his issue we had the opportunity to talk with the bridal designer in this exclusive interview. We can’t wait for you to discover where she gets her inspiration from, what made her want to become a fashion designer in the first place, as well as facts about her personal style and what she thinks will be on trend next season….

Designer Profile

I KNEW THAT BEING A FASHION DESIGNER WAS MY VOCATION WHEN... I got my very first sewing machine at age 8. I was so excited that I never stopped dreaming about becoming a fashion designer! Today I am more than happy that I was actually able to realize that dream.

I SPECIALIZED IN WEDDING DRESSES BECAUSE... I wanted to make young girls dream about their wedding day in a special way. Moreover, I wanted to be able to work with beautiful, unique materials and to promote the manufacturing label “Made in France” within the bridal sector.

MY PERSONAL STYLE IS... quite urban and simplistic. I love huge cities such as Paris, London, New York - all those urban styles inspire me a lot.

MY BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR... besides creating my own bridal brands, it’s definitely the arrival of my little twins that are now 14 months old. I love them dearly and I am so glad to be able to being a working mother. CONFETI 25

AT THE MOMENT, I’M WORKING ON... a collection for wedding guests and different collaborations with other brands.

WHAT BRIDES CAN EXPECT FROM MY DRESSES... high quality, elegance and relaxation, because the fit is what counts: I want the bride to feel comfortable in her dress on her big day. There is no sense in feeling itchy or not being able to breathe because the dress doesn’t fit well.

MY CREATIONS STAND OUT FROM OTHER LABELS BECAUSE... they are very comfortable and light. Simplistic, but unique as they always tell a story, just like “Toute La Vie”. Thanks to the exceptional materials, the fits are always amazing and when I see the brides, they always appear to feel fantastic in their wedding dress.

inter is here and one thing is for sure, this season’s looks are set to be anything but boring! Ultra-feminine? That was yesterday. Today, we want to get wilder and wilder with daring cuts, combined with modern handmade embellishments that give your dress the ultimate ’wow’ factor. Often we think of very old-fashioned styled dresses when even just hearing the term “embellishment.” However, we already know that old styles are always coming back and designers such as Anna Campbell, Dana Harel and Savannah Miller have proven that the trend for embellishments has been reborn with a far more daring, playful and edgy side. From small shimmering pearls and shiny floral elements, to sparkling silver palettes; this season’s designs are more diverse and exotic than ever before. Combined with see-through lace elements, delicate waistbelts, or beautiful glowing beaded shoulder loops, the right embellishments will make a statement like you’ve never seen before!

LOOSE TENDRILS ARE BACK, BLAME MEGHAN MARKLE. TWO LONG FACEFRAMING PIECES, CURLED AWAY FROM THE FACE, IS ALL YOU NEED TO MAKE A BASIC CHIGNON LOOK OH-SO-2019 ‘DONE’.

T

he Spring 2019 bridal shows threw the hair world into disarray. We were shocked to see there were no structured up-dos at all. Everything was loose and undone giving a real ethereal, whimsical feel. The models could have stepped straight out of a fairytale. Curls got even prettier, with heavenly waves seen on the Monique Lhuillier, Pronovias and Maggie Sottero runways and flowers also took centre stage. At Elie Saab, white flowers were glued along the length of the hair for one of the most romantic and fun hair looks of the season. Fresh floral arrangements topped off hair with and without veils at Reem Acra. The blooms were frequently coordinated with corresponding bouquets. Oversized flower crowns in bright blooms of every colour under the sun were also seen at Reem Acra. It certainly isn’t a look for the faint hearted. No flower headpiece is complete without textured, lived-in hair. Pair statement flower crowns with the ultimate boho bridal beach waves by spritzing the hair with a generous dose of Redken’s Fashion Waves, a medium control sea salt spray which adds texture and body.

EVERYTHING WAS LOOSE AND UNDONE GIVING A REAL ETHEREAL, WHIMSICAL FEEL.

Photographer Mireia Cordomí Hair: Paul Macfarlane @ Reflections Hair Salon Makeup - Nicola McGeorge

Make a statement 2019 is much more about what is going into the hair rather than the hair itself, add personality and style to your bridal look by opting for a statement hair piece. If you are wanting to wear your hair in a stylish low bun, a statement hair piece is perfect to add some glam to your look.

Pump up the volume I was very excited to see lots of 80s references at the shows, think big, think wavy. The voluminous 80s-inspired hair flip made it into the Oleg Cassini show and is perfect for the bride who wants to look casual but not beachy or undone.

Get Shorty The bridal lob is bigger than ever, and makes any gown look a little more modern and cool. Show off short hair with a smooth blow-dry that grazes your shoulders and a minimalist veil. The easiest way to add edge back to a voluminous tulle gown? Pair with an ultra-sleek blunt bob as shown at Vera.

Softly does it You can never go wrong with a classic chignon—the key for the new season is to keep it low and style a soft centre part. If it’s a fashion-forward edge you’re after, get inspired by the likes of Gracy Accad, Eliza Jane Howell and Yolan Cris who picked out everything from feathers and pearls pretty pins

Half way there The half-up bridal hairstyle got a cool makeover this bridal season. Moving away from the

big fat gypsy wedding styles, instead of pulling hair into a voluminous half-up section, just the face-framing layers are pulled back and laid flat with a few bobby pins.

Royal approval Loose tendrils are back, blame Meghan Markle. Two long face-framing pieces, curled away from the face, is all you need to make a basic chignon look oh-so-2019 ‘done’. If you wear your hair down every day, then of course wear it down on your wedding day but add a little wave or curl, and pull the front section back off your face. Go with the flow of your natural texture, creating a loose half updo with trailing tendrils.

Join the pony club My favorite look from the shows had to be from Leila Rose. Hair was styled in loose waves and then held back by white ribbons tied around the neck. To achieve this style prep hair with sea salt spray, then curl the hair to create textured waves. After scooping hair into a low ponytail, rough up the waves even more with a blast of texture spray. To finish take a long strip of white velvet ribbon and tie a bow, wrapping it around the neck and tying securely with an uneven knot in the hair. Ponytails are so versatile; you can do them high and you can do them low. You can curl your hair for added texture or keep things sleek and sexy. The possibilities are truly endless. The sleek pony is also ideal for destination weddings as you don’t have to worry about the humidity ruining your hairstyle.

It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had known each other. He then suddenly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I turned around to see what he was pointing at, and as I looked down, a light shone on to the rocks where there was a sign that read, ‘Marry Me?’. ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…

The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

davidtoms-weddings.com morning, the blessing ceremony in the afternoon followed by cocktails and the reception party into the night. All were outdoors, the weather was amazing and all this infused with the surroundings and the ‘buzz’ our guests came with made it truly the best wedding, I myself, had ever been to, and I still can’t believe that it was my own. I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.

hiara Ferragni is one of the world’s mostrecognized fashion bloggers. What started out as a simple blog, has now become an online fashion store and magazine. Being said to have the perfect mix of glamour and personal style, Chiara was ranked first in the Forbes list of the most powerful fashion influencers, thanks to the success of her blog, The Blonde Salad. On September 1st 2018 the beautiful business woman and mother of 7 month old son, Leone Lucia, married singer and Italian X

better word would be the “dresses”! Chiara wore not one, but two haute couture Dior dresses for her wedding day, designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri. The ceremony dress boasted 400 metres of fabric and took an impressive 1600 hours to complete. With its crochet bodice,

Factor judge Federico Leonardo “Fedez” Lucia in the stunning setting of Palazzo Ducezio, a grand 18th-century building just outside of Noto, Sicily that is traditionally used as a town hall. A non-religious open-air ceremony, the wedding was inspired by the Coachella music festival, with a funfair, fireworks, a Ferris wheel and a stage with live acts and karaoke, followed by a three-day celebration at boutique hotel Dimora delle Balze, which has 62 acres of gardens and

beautiful citrus groves. In true influencer style the wedding photos flooded Instagram with the hashtag #theFerragnez.

THE DRESS long sleeves, high neck and full-bodied tulle skirt it showcased a contemporary twist on a classic style. Chuiri told Vogue: “We made a crochet jumpsuit that recalls the ancient practice of southern Italy and France, where the technique is strongly associated to a female tradition.” Her second dress, a pale pink tulle and silk organza evening gown was embroidered with motifs that evoke Chiara and Fedez’s shared history. For the after party Chiara wore a shorter, ballet-inspired dress with matching embroidered ballet pumps.

THE CEREMONY

T

he wedding ceremony took place on the evening of 1st September 2018. The wedding coordination was organised by Alessandra Grillo and florals were created by Vincenzo Dascanio; large garlands with white and champagne-coloured roses, hanging from the trees. If you watched the wedding video on Chiara Ferragni’s Instagram account (@chiaraferragni), you will probably know what we are talking about! The incredible open-air garden ceremony hosted 160 guests, including Chiara’s six bridesmaids; Pardis Zarei, her sisters Francesca and Valentina Ferragni, Martina Maccherone, Michela Gombacci and Veronica Ferraro. All of them wore handmade dresses designed by Alberta Ferretti in collaboration with Eco-Age. The pink silk georgette pleated gowns were covered with lace inlays with either a deep V neckline or a sweetheart neckline.

Celeb Wedding THE AFTER PARTY The wedding reception boasted not one ride but an entire amusement park complete with insane fireworks, a light up ferris wheel and lots of cotton candy. Inspired by Coachella, the party featured a performance by the groom, a lot of customised merchandise, and a stunning carousel. The entire funfair cost a whopping £81,000, maybe a little out of most people’s budgets but it definitely gave us some wedding inspo for the coming season! Congratulations Chiara and Fedez!

The wedding rings were designed by Pomellato. Two identically crafted golden rings with a subtle diamond pave and inside engraved with their wedding date and names. Ferragni told Vogue: “I am totally in love with the idea of being in love.” she continued, “I always say ‘I love love’, which may sound silly but it means a lot. Everything with Federico has been incredible, and of course it still is, but it was so unexpected. He taught me to believe in the unexpected.” If you don’t love Chiara already you will now. Instead of a registry, the couple encouraged their fans to nominate their favourite charities of which Ferragni and Fedez chose one for their guests to make a donation to.

A Paradise Wedding

Kai & Gabriela met in the vibrant city of Bangkok, Thailand, fell deeply in love and this year got married in beautiful Spain! Here we share with you their romantic love story! 64 CONFETI CONFETI 64

Real Weddings

"We went out with the group and we kept talking the whole night about life! We would never be the same after that ..." Falling in love in Bangkok We met in Bangkok, two doctors speaking at the same meeting. Kai saw me in the event program and tried to send me a cordial message but I never responded. However a mutual friend from Istanbul was chatting with Kai, and commented on what a nice group of people were at the event, mentioned my name and ended up putting Kai in contact with me. I hesitated in the beginning but he was so friendly! We met in the lobby and from the first

moment our eyes made contact we knew there was a strangely strong connection! We went out with the group but stayed together the whole time, talking about life! From that moment things would never be the same again… An intimate wedding Kai was already living in Spain and I was planning to move over so Spain was the obvious destination. We knew we wanted a very intimate event so we decided to get married in his house.

Making it personal It was very important to us for our wedding to reflect who we are and the new life we were starting to build together. Brazilian flavour & clarity As I was very pregnant at the time of our wedding and we are proud of our new son, I chose a designer in Brazil to make a satin bucol dress that would highlight the curves of my belly and also would reflect an elegant and simple

character. My bridesmaids, as well as his best man, were selected among other friends because they were with us through many important moments of our life. As our garden has many colourful flowers, we decided to go with a white theme, to highlight the contrast with the gardens and to add clarity, as it was an evening event. The main colour for our flowers was green, giving a fresh look to add to the beauty of our garden, the decor was minimalist and supposed to be comfortable.

66 CONFETI 66 CONFETI

The ceremony was held by a notary and our friends made a speech about our lives and our special story. Â Cocktails & ceviche We wanted something chilled and relaxed, so we chose a ceviche and oyster buffet with self-service, so everyone could help themselves and to ensure a relaxed vibe. Plus we offered a range of international cocktails for our guests to enjoy during dinner.

Perfect photography Our wedding photographers came from Bodakids and they captured everything perfectly! Magical moments Our highlight was walking down the aisle as husband and wife. It was magical! Kai’s personal favourite moment was the speech I made, and mine was his. I would change... Absolutely nothing! The entire day was just exactly as we had imagined. My advice! Make decisions for you and not to please others, it’s your day, so make choices for you and your partner and no one else. Let your ceremony showcase who you are as a couple and be an extension of your life.

Nothing Would Keep Us

APART Rose and Joel mixed Jewish traditions with contemporary dĂŠcor and personal touches for a one of a kind celebration.

68 CONFETI CONFETI 68

Real Weddings FINDERS KEEPERS Joel and I met while I was living in LA and he was still living in London. Joel’s childhood best friend is also my cousin, and when the pair of them decided to go on a trip to Vegas, my cousin called me up to see if I wanted to join them. Thankfully I said yes, because this is how Joel and I met. We did the long distance relationship thing for six months, with the two of us going back and forth or meeting in New York, but we knew we couldn’t go on like that forever. As my family lives in London and I have dual citizenship I decided to make the big move and relocated to London in May 2015. HERE COMES THE SUN I visited Marbella for the first time in October 2015 and fell in love immediately. Southern California, where I grew up is very Spanish influenced, so I felt very at home. I have always wanted to have my wedding ceremony outside by the beach, so Marbella was a no brainer for our destination wedding. BEYOND LUXURY The deciding factor for our wedding venue, the Gran Meliá Don Pepe was the ceremony area, which overlooks the ocean. The hotel’s picturesque gardens were filled with an abundance of flowers and the venue is exactly what I had envisioned for my big day. THE SHOWSTOPPER I tried on at least fifty dresses before realizing that what I wanted didn’t exist! I knew from the beginning I wanted a silk/ satin skirt. The shape of the skirt was really difficult, as I wanted it wide at the sides and long at the back, but I didn’t want it puffy at the front. Not too much to ask is it? So we ended up having the dress made from scratch. The skirt was designed by a dress maker I knew

in St Albans. The top I ordered from Martiana Liana separates collection and then I changed the sleeves, top and back, adding straps and boning to make it more of a basque shape. I couldn’t believe how well it all came together. I knew the moment I got engaged I wanted the nude YSL tribute heels and it worked perfectly with the nude underlay in the bodice of my dress. I also wore my grandmother’s garter from 54 years ago, when she got married, and my other grandmother’s handkerchief from her wedding 56 years ago. I always wanted the bridesmaids in silk to match my dress material so I bought all matching dresses for the bridesmaids. I had two maids of honour so their dresses also matched and were a slightly darker shade and different shape from the bridesmaids, but I kept the material the same throughout. The groom had a bespoke suit made and a bespoke waistcoat. Before deciding on the suit, he and his brother bought matching Guissepe Zannotti loafers so they could wear the trousers shorter and not have to wear socks. RETRO CHIC My entire look was very 60’s, Bridget Bardot inspired. I never wanted my hair up as my long hair is pretty much always down. Having it slicked down at the front made it feel more elegant than my every day look. My makeup I just completely trusted Nicola with. I wanted it to be very bronzed and dewy with the focus on my eyes. I have never been happier with hair and makeup in my life. All the bridesmaids looked incredible. I wanted them to have their hair down in loose waves and the makeup was flawless, they all looked like dolls.

CONFETI 69

Real Weddings

SURPRISE SURPRISE We wanted a eucalyptus and blush flower theme, there was eucalyptus literally everywhere. The bridesmaids bouquets were simple but stunning, astilbe, (my favourite flower) and eucalyptus hand tied with ribbon. We opted for soft lighting to compliment the flowers. There were also little surprises dotted around the venue such as a doughnut wall built by the groom and the table plan was shot glasses with each guests name attached.

For the cocktail reception we had Asian themed foods such as sushi and spring rolls. Then for the main meal tuna tartare was served, followed by spicy sea bass and finished off with a trio desserts; apple crumble, creme brulee, and chocolate strawberries. At 1am we brought out fruit platters and churros with chocolate. Guests were able to enjoy a mojito station for the entire evening to accompany the open bar. We wanted a real party atmosphere. MY FAVOURITE MOMENTS...

ADD A TWIST We had a traditional Jewish ceremony but we made it slightly more modern by having the bedeken (which is typically done in private) take place on the aisle for all of our guests to see. We also included the American tradition of having all the bridesmaids and groomsmen stand on either side of the chuppah. We flew in our Rabbi from London, which made it feel very personal and special to us.

70 CONFETI CONFETI 70

Seeing Joel as I walked down the aisle was incredible. We chose not to see each other for the week leading up to the wedding, so it was a very special and emotional moment. I also was very lucky to have over thirty of my friends fly over from America to be there, that is something I will never forget. I HAVE to mention that one of my wedding day highlights was having the band play Spice Girls and Britney Spears for me. That really made my day.

The Festival

Wedding Meet online, fall in love, get married abroad… welcome to a true 21st century kind of love. Claudia and Adam’s wedding exuded festival-chic but the ultimate highlight was the memories created by their guests and loved ones. Confeti was blown away by the love, intimacy and natural beauty of this truly “real” wedding!

72 CONFETI

Here’s to dating in the 21st century… Adam and I met on a dating app. Although we grew up in the same town we never would have met each other without the internet. It’s not a cliché anymore; it’s a real place to actually meet and fall in love. Wedding day?... Let’s do a Wedding Weekend! My family has an apartment in Spain, so it was a very natural choice – plus the beautiful weather definitely helps! We also love hosting parties, so we thought, why not?! Let’s turn our wedding into a whole weekend celebration. A Finca-dream coming true When we walked into the Finca for the first time, it was love at first sight. The setting is breathtaking, and we immediately began envisioning our picture-perfect wedding. #Essensebride My dress was from “Essense of Australia”, a brand boasting a modern spin on bohemian style. For the bridesmaids’ dresses I decided to opt for designs by Sorella Vita, in a sparkly rose gold as I wanted them to shimmer in the sunlight. I told Karen, head of Deseos Florists, my vision of simplicity with an elegant touch. The venue sold itself, and she delivered exactly what I wanted!

Festival Feeling We had a kosher wedding with catering by Lepanto. For the main course, we went for lamb chops, and the band “Club Live,” gave the wedding the festival vibe we had imagined. It was really fantastic, especially when they managed to place a grand piano on the dance floor and even convinced me to sing with them! Make the photographers part of your family I booked Nani and Antonio Perez to take care of all the photos and videography. They were just amazing and on our big day it felt like they were part of the family. They kindly treated us to a few sneak-peaks of the images whilst the editing process took place and every one was overwhelmingly beautiful.

Sneaking off The highlight of the day, for me, was walking down the aisle, seeing the setting for the first time truly exceeded my expectations. Number two has to be the first dance with my husband which was a moment I will hold dear to my heart forever. Afterwards, we snuck off and quietly watched the party from the edge of the dancefloor, just the two of us. The feeling of seeing all our guests enjoying themselves and the love in the room was the perfect end to a perfect day.

What I would change? Absolutely nothing. Let your guests create the atmosphere You can plan as much as you like, but trust me, on your big day it will be the people that make the memories, so just surround yourself by everyone you love, smile and simply enjoy the happiest day of your life!

Chris and Helen said ‘Yes’ in the Philippines and ‘I do’ under the Spanish sun with traditional entertainment and a beach inspired theme completing their fairytale day.

74 CONFETI

SURPRISE JEWELS

Chris and I met at work in 2013. My brother in law owns a design consultancy in Nottingham and Chris came to work for him a year before I started. On the 30th of December 2015, we were both visiting my parents in the Philippines. Chris decided to play a game on the beach, whoever found the prettiest shell won! I found one that looked like a winner, a beautiful clam that Chris proceeded to open with a teaspoon, (which he unsuspiciously had in his pocket!) and inside the clam was a ring. My first thought was that we had found treasure! Until Chris got down on his knee and asked me to marry him. I was so stunned he had to ask me twice!

green garden and the terrace we immediately felt it was the one. We knew if we loved how it looked in the rain then it would certainly look spectacular in the sunshine. We weren’t wrong! A LIGHT GRECIAN STYLE

My wedding dress had to be made of light, airy fabric. First of all, because it would be hot, and second, I had to fit it in a wedding box and travel with it as hand carry luggage on the plane. I didn’t want to risk it getting lost in check-in luggage! I have always loved Grecian style dresses, with long flowing chiffon fabric, so I immediately had a clear idea in my head of what I wanted, this made it considerably easier to choose!

RAINY DAY, LUCKY DAY…

After spending one day in 3 shops, I found the one! It was a beautiful Justin Alexander dress in ivory, with no bling, just some delicate ruching on the bodice. I immediately fell in love with it because it looked classic and simple. Likewise my make-up on the wedding day was simple and not too heavy. Lorraine, my hair and make-up artist was the best, the waterproof make-up she applied did not budge in the heat!

Sunshine Weddings showed us several venues, and when we arrived at Tikitano, it was pouring down with rain! We walked along the soggy grass and as soon as we saw the sea views, the

light aqua colour. For the The wedding ceremony was performed by the quirkiest man in all of Malaga! We were so lucky to have been recommended Padre Peter, whose eccentric charm and jokes made everyone laugh and feel comfortable during the ceremony. Our guests commented that he looked like Shakespeare with his curled moustache and ruff! It was a non-religious ceremony, more of a blessing really, because at this point Chris and I were already officially married. We had done all the legal stuff in the registry office back in the UK two weeks before we flew to Spain. So at this point we could all relax and concentrate on the celebrations!

Real Weddings

We had a very talented Spanish guitarist, called Nano. He entertained our guests when they arrived at the venue. He also played a Spanish love song as I walked down the aisle and a celebratory flamenco as we made our exit as a couple, he was amazing!

We also had a wonderful DJ recommended to us by Sunshine weddings, DJ KMiss. Our first dance was to Newton Faulkner’s “All I Got” and ended the night with Elton John’s “Your Song”. DJ KMiss played a good mix of dance tunes, even my dad, who had just turned 80, was up there dancing before anybody else! Our cake wasn’t the typical vanilla buttercream cake, we were celebrating in Spain so I told Chris (I pretty much decided for him) that we should have an orange sponge with chocolate ganache cake. Again, Sunshine Wedding recommended Omaya from Cake Couture Marbella, and she made us a beautiful seashell inspired cake (echoing our engagement by the sea!) and it was 5 tiers of scrumptiousness! Regarding the special touches, Chris and I knew it was going to be hot before and during the ceremony so we bought some white fans for people to use and to keep.

SPANISH TOUCHES

The menu was provided by our venue, Tikitano. We had quite a few guests with various dietary requirements! Halyna from Tikitano was so very patient and accommodating to every request we made regarding the menu. On top of the main menu, we had vegetarian, vegan, crudivegano, gluten-free, seafood-free, tomatofree and nut-free meals!

We also had a polaroid guest book for our friends and family to leave messages in. It’s so nice to go through it now and see the messages with a photo of their smiling faces next to it! We also bought a hamper full of white flip flops (assorted sizes) with a sign that read “Shake Away Those Dancing Blues And Put On These Boogie Shoes!” We know it can be uncomfortable for the ladies to dance in heels after a long day walking in them, surprisingly even the men started wearing them on the dance floor! For the kids we brought along a “Fun Box”, which had an assortment of bubbles and bouncy balls that light up and flash. IN LOVE WITH CANDID SNAPSHOTS

We chose David Toms Photography at the very beginning, (another Sunshine weddings recommendation) but due to unfortunate circumstances, we CONFETI 75

ended up going with Isabel Benchetrit, who also worked alongside David Toms. Chris and I were very happy with our photographs, they are all so beautiful and a good mix of candid and posed. Isabel captured the mood of the wedding very well, and we especially love the candid snapshots of our guests! UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES

It’s hard to choose a favourite moment and the day went by so fast! I would say maybe the time I was being walked down the garden by my dad to the ceremony. My dad was all relaxed and smiling and telling me not to be nervous. We started walking, and as we turned the corner I saw the bamboo canopy, the flowers, the guests all smiling, my husband-to-be in the distance, the beautiful view of the sea, it was such a tranquil happy scene, combined with Nano’s beautiful guitar strumming… it was almost dreamlike. That memory will stay with me forever. A CELEBRATION OF TWO

Advice, let’s see… don’t be a stress head or a ‘bridezilla’! Enjoy the planning, and give yourself plenty of time to plan as well, don’t rush it. Always consult your partner every step of the way and always ask for their opinion, it’s a celebration of two people, not one! And I would strongly advice couples to hire a wedding planner (if you can afford it), especially when getting married abroad, because they have priceless local knowledge and contacts (just be sure to get a good one! Read as many reviews as you can and do your research!) And lastly, the best advice ever, GET MARRIED IN SPAIN!!! Guaranteed sunshine and stunning scenery, there’s nothing worse than rain pouring on your wedding day! 76 76 CONFETI CONFETI

LOVE

is the best medicine Doctors Jai and Resh enjoyed a simple and elegant celebration held in a stylish villa in Ronda.

All laid back We’re both Indian (Sikh) by background. We liked the idea of having a laid back, nontraditional civil ceremony in the Spanish outdoors. We envisioned getting married in a rural villa in the Andalusian mountains, somewhere personal and intimate where we could have the whole place to ourselves, party it up, and make as much noise as we wanted late into the night. We built our wedding weekend around the idea of staying at our chosen villa with our immediate families over a long four day weekend and inviting our guests over to celebrate our wedding with us. Our chosen venue, Cortijo el Rosero, was visually stunning, without being too pretentious. It is surrounded by rolling hills and mountains, which became the picturesque backdrop for the sunset on the balmy summer’s evening that was our alfresco wedding breakfast.

Recipe for success Our wedding planner, Jessica at White Wedding Days, was so enthusiastic from the word go. She had endless amounts of time to spend with us on Skype calls and email. Our experience of using a planner was that it makes the process so incredibly easy. She sourced out all the suppliers and kept it all under budget. It was as easy as, ‘guys, here’s a choice of three caterers that meet your requirements’. All we had to do was choose one. It was a dream.. We made a quick pre-wedding trip to Ronda a few months before the big day, and Jessica was integral in planning this for us. 78 CONFETI

She accompanied us to see the venue, helped organise our menu tasting (one of the highlights!) and meetings with the suppliers.

All things pretty I opted to wear an effortless white dress to fit in with the theme and surroundings, instead of traditional Indian clothes. My dress was a Rime Arodaky gown from a Notting Hill Boutique called ‘The Mews Bridal’. My shoes were a steal from Missguided, the same ones were actually used on the runway models for that particular bridal collection. I love Rime’s style which encompasses a French boho chic, slightly rocker, vibe. I accessorized with antique style silver stacking rings and earrings. Resh stuck to his native roots and wore a Scottish kilt, he said it was surprisingly comfortable, even in the afternoon heat. I went for a classic brown smokey eye and nude peachy lip makeup look. My make up artist Nicola has an impressive resume that includes working in film and fashion, as well as the added benefit of being a health and beauty journalist. I felt I looked a better version of myself on my wedding day, and was so happy with the overall look. Alex did a wonderful job on my hair working with the extensions I had in, creating loose waves on one side and adding an orchid for some extra glam.

Naturally perfect We didn’t have a theme as such. We wanted to enhance the natural beauty of the place with rustic tones and classically simple

décor; white candles, hanging white flowers and simple long tables. Jessica sourced a florist and helped us to create a setting that transformed from an elegant, boho day affair to a romantic, candle lit reception by night.

Keeping it personal I walked down the aisle with my dad to the sound of ‘Sapphire’ by Bonobo, led by my little nephew and niece, the flower bearers. We exchanged vows at the villa’s characteristic facade adorned with hanging white flowers. Our Minister Liz is a humanist, and our ceremony very much reflected these values. My mum gave a reading about marriage, and my sister in law recited a touching poem. We tried to keep guests as cool as possible under the parasols, with ice water and sangria on tap. Once the ceremony was over, guests indulged in cocktails and canapés centered around a main water feature, before being led to a sitdown alfresco meal overlooking the mountains. Later, the courtyard transformed once again into an atmospheric space with ambient lighting, DJ booth and open bar.

rapport with us on the day and blended seamlessly into the wedding day, capturing some stunning moments that we will cherish forever.

I will never forget... My favourite moment was when I finally had the chance to sit down and gaze at the breathtaking views of the Andalusian sunset with a cold glass of wine, watching our guests mingle and settle down to listen to my husband make the most unforgettable wedding speech, as his kilt gently, and occasionally, blew up in the warm summer’s evening breeze.

The beat goes on The music was very much Resh’s forte. He would be proud to admit he spent hours building a Spotify playlist in the weeks leading up to the wedding. Tristan, our DJ, expertly blended the sounds to take our guests on a journey of jazz, instrumental hip hop, downtempo electronic, house and 80’s pop classics with music by Frank Sinatra, Bonobo, George Michael, Disclosure and Maceo Plex amongst others. Being Punjabi, we had to have some bhangra music in there too.

Snap Snap Our Spanish wedding photographer, Mireia Cordomi, was an easy choice. Her photography style is rich and nostalgic. She is an expert at using the natural light to her advantage. The pictures turned out very natural, exactly what we wanted. She immediately built a

Allie and Dale’s intimate wedding at the Cortijo Pedro Jimenez in Casares centered around good food, great music and making memories that last a life time.

TRULY ENGAGING

THE NEXT STEP

During the long process of immigrating from Toronto to Bermuda last year, Dale proposed with a surprise sunset picnic at my favourite beach, secluded about 1km into a National Nature Reserve. It was a random weekday and I thought we were going for a casual swim after work; yes there was a romantic picnic spread, but without sounding too smug, Dale knows I love a good surprise and he’s quite romantic so this wasn’t strange. I was stunned, and after about 20 minutes of yelling, I remembered to say “YES”.

After getting engaged we set a date and then pretty much forgot about wedding planning for the next 5 months. It wasn’t until December rolled around, and we’d sent out our save the dates, that we both hit panic mode. Having visited Málaga and explored the province back in October 2017, we realised that the language and cultural barriers were going to be an issue. We emailed a number of planners but my first live conversation was with Jessica White of White Wedding Days (WWD). What’s that cliche about finding your soulmate? “When you know, you

80 CONFETI

know.” She was amazing out the gate and we 100% could not have pulled off our day under the time constraint of 5 months, to the caliber that we did, had we not had Jessica and her team on our side. Jessica was just a lovely human to have around on our day. Best unofficial bridesmaid ever!

WHEN IT'S MEANT TO BE My wedding dress was by Crystal Design Couture. One of my bridesmaids and I went to have a peek at the shop without an appointment, as soon as we entered the bridal section the dress caught my eye and within an hour I had been measured, paid the 50% down payment,

submitted the order and was on my way home. I always wear my hair down so I wanted relaxed elegance in a romantic up-do. Hair stylist, Alex Harrocks arrived on the day, no trial and an indecisive bride, but left behind five beautiful updos. I asked that she give us a transferable style in case anyone wanted to literally let their hair down post-ceremony, but we were all in up-do’s until well after the photographers and videographer left. For make up I asked for a glammed up version of a day-look I’d worn on a recent photoshoot. I brought on makeup artist Nicola McGeorge and again

had not done a trial with her, but she listened to my concerns and questions via email and her obvious expertise put my mind at ease in addressing each item. A sweaty night of dancing is a recipe for a make-up disaster yet I didn’t do a single touch up the entire day.

THE PERFECT PALETTE We tried to keep things simple in deciding on a colour palette of ivory and green with gold accents peppering the decor which matched and played off our location and time of year easily. The food was kept as locally sourced as possible to reflect (and take advantage of) the delicious cuisine you find in Southern Spain. Otherwise the day was planned to focus on intimacy and celebrating love, our venue and location would be novelty to our guests by default, so I felt it would have been silly to fight that.

LIGHT OF MY LIFE When I started on decor my emphasis was on fairy lights to create that intimate space and atmosphere. Dale and I wanted a cosy, naturally elegant back drop that wasn’t trying too hard and fit the overall feel of the venue, season and region. For flowers I asked for a variety of lush, elegant white blooms mixing with foliage and textures, again, local wherever possible. Dale wanted the ceremonial arch wrapped in lush white fabric, accented by florals and foliage which was delivered perfectly.

ONCE WED The ceremony was short, fun and so so sweet! Our officiant was Dale’s sister, Jill Cashman and she nailed it. There was something so personal and special about having someone guide the ceremony who knows us, whom we are comfortable with and love very much. Though she is normally a happy-go-lucky, funny lady, she took her role very seriously and delivered on the balance we were going for between solemnity and relaxed.

Real Weddings HITTING THE RIGHT NOTE Music was my favourite part of wedding planning. I think the night we got engaged we started writing down songs for wedding playlists, it was a really fun and special memory. Picking the perfect key songs was so important to both of us, and I think I will continue to feel these songs in my bones for a very long time. We brought on DJ Tristan Harper and I’m quite sure we heard every single song on our (crazy-extensive) lists with plenty additions based on his ability to read the room. Several guests commented that they loved the selection of music specifically, which we were thrilled to hear because the right song at the right moment can cement a memory.

Oh so many!! From a hilarious impromptu garter-toss, special moments in the bridal suite, beautiful speeches, the energy that the Mariachi band brought; our day was packed with humour and emotionally charged moments that had me teetering between cracking-up laughing and/or tearing up at any given moment. The dances were another favourite moment. Other than our vows, our first dance was essentially the first conversation Dale and I had the entire day. I really missed him! We were careful to select a timeless song that spoke to us as a couple and went with a classic favourite “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis. By the end I

Claire and Bill married in a traditional church setting with bright colours, live music and some authentic Spanish touches.

A Friendly Encounter We met through our best friends Emma and Bill in Fulham. We hit it off straight away and had some really fun dates which we still laugh about now.

Childhood Memories Bill has been going to Spain with his family since he was a baby. Since we have been together we have always stayed around the Mijas area and absolutely love it there so it seemed the perfect location for our wedding. We try to squeeze in a couple of trips per year and have even booked our first Christmas there as a married couple this year! When we came to meet our wedding planners, Sunshine Weddings, we met founder Scott Gibbons who kindly took us from Fuengirola to Nerja. Whilst on the car journey having chit chat, Scott asked Bill where he was from (he was born in Fulham) to discover that Scott

84 CONFETI

is a HUGE lifelong Fulham fan and they actually have friends in common! Needless to say the hour and a half journey was an interesting one and we knew we had made the right choice choosing Sunshine Weddings.

Shine Bright in the Sunshine We wanted it to be a relaxed atmosphere with wonderful views and outdoor catering . The most important thing to us was having one big party in the sun with all of our close friends and family dancing the night away!

My style was bright and colourful, almost a fiesta feel. From my invites to my flowers, there were bright colours included wherever I could! I chose coral for my bridesmaids as I really didn’t want to opt for traditional pastels and felt that they needed a bold summer colour. My dress was Zac Posen and was a sweetheart satin fishtail with a gorgeous bow detail on the train. I didn’t want anything too fussy and I don’t think anyone was surprised at my choice as it was very “me”. My bouquet was a bright mix of different flowers with a sunflower being the main one. My flower girls also had one each too. I kept my colours to coral,

yellow and blue but wasn’t too fussy about everything matching as long as it felt fun and bright. As my family are Irish Catholics, it was important to me that we had a traditional church ceremony. El Salvador church in Nerja was the perfect venue. It really is a beautiful church. During the ceremony we had a Spanish guitarist who played an acoustic version of Bruno Mars Marry Me as we walked down the aisle. He then went on to welcome the guests in the venue with some traditional Spanish flamenco music. It really set the scene. We also included some of the children in the ceremony getting them to say some prayers and mentioning our close family members that are no longer with us.

Spanish Style Once the guests had arrived at the venue we had a mixture of canapes which included chorizo

lollipops, sweet chilli prawns and mini tortillas with a mango salsa. We also had tinto, cava and beer on tap to cool the guests down in the scorching heat! For our main we had Paella and an Argentinian BBQ with a selection of marinated meats & salads which went down really well. The music was a mix of wedding classics with a few Irish songs thrown in. It was a mixture of both live singers and a DJ and we also had a few performers from the wedding party singing too! Our masters of ceremony was Bill’s godson Henry Oliver who has just turned 7. He welcomed the guests into the church handing out colourful fans and also introduced all of the important parts of the day. He even sung a

bit of Johnny Cash at the end of the night!

Memories to Cherish Gary Tapp from Your Wedding moments did both the videography and photography, he was very friendly and relaxed and we hardly noticed he was there. We have some real natural shots which really captured the atmosphere. The posed shots were really fun and we were giggling through all of them.

Walking down the aisle and seeing all of our close friends and family congratulating us was definitely a favourite moment! Also the best man’s speech, it was a really funny and heart felt poem about the two of us.

Real Weddings

I don’t think we would change anything at all! It was exactly how we wanted it and to hear people tell us now how much they enjoyed themselves says it all to us.

Our advice Don’t sweat the small stuff! On the day people do not notice the things that may not go to plan as long as they are well fed and watered the rest will follow.

A Pearl

OF GREAT PRICE According to the Book of Proverbs a good woman is more to be valued than fine rubies, but more generally we find such a good woman to be compared to a pearl. The reason for this is simple. Pearls have been regarded as objects of beauty for centuries, and have come to be identified with anything that is rare, fine, admirable or valuable.

B

rides especially may be so regarded, and many wear these gems to emphasise the inner glow that invariably comes on such a joyous occasion. I have never seen an ugly bride! Of course, not everybody can afford natural (or wild) pearls, which are very rare and very valuable. Many hundreds of pearl oysters and mussels have to be gathered and opened before even one pearl is found.

“It was named La Peregrina and is perhaps the finest Margarita pearl ever found.”

pearl ever found. Such pearls are extremely rare today, and none match La Peregrina, although President Romulo Betancourt presented a string of Margarita pearls to Jacqueline Kennedy on the occasion of President Kennedy’s official visit to Venezuela. The yellow colour of very valuable Margarita pearls emphasises the fact that a pearl does not have to be a lustrous silvery white. They can be anything from black to pink, purple to green, or practically anything in between. Similarly, whilst a perfectly round and smooth pearl is the most desirable shape, many other shapes occur. These are known as “baroque” pearls, with perhaps the “tear drop” shape being the most popular.

In a haul of three tons, only three or four oysters will produce perfect pearls. It does not take a degree in mathematics to calculate that the pearl tiara belonging to the Empress Eugenie, dating from 1853 and now to be found in the Louvre Museum in Paris, which features 212 natural pearls needed about 160 tons of oysters!

“MANY HUNDREDS OF PEARL, OYSTERS AND MUSSELS HAVE TO BE GATHERED AND OPENED BEFORE EVEN ONE PEARL IS FOUND. “

These oysters, at that period of history, were gathered by divers manually pulling the shellfish from the floors of oceans and rivers. Ibn Battuta in the 14th century records how pearl divers attached cords to their waists to ensure their return to the surface! From prehistoric times such activity was centred on the Indian ocean, and in such areas as the Persian gulf, the Red Sea and the gulf of Mannar.

But it is not only oysters and mussels which produce pearls. Under the right circumstances any shelled mollusc can produce pearls, although these generally lack lustre and are usually valueless, although an exception is the abalone in New Zealand, which produces “blister” pearls. These pearls are admired for their intense lustre and naturally bright colour, which may be compared to the opal.

It was here in Mannar that the great 5th century epic Mahavamsa records the visit of Prince Vijaya to Sri Lanka bearing a gift of eight varieties of pearls to the Pandyan king. The Chinese of the Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD) hunted for pearls in the South China Sea. And when the conquistadors arrived in the Americas they found extensive oyster beds around the islands of Cubagua and Margarita, some 200 kilometres north of the Venezuelan coast.

They are usually referred to as “blue pearls”. “Pink pearls” come from conches found in the Caribbean sea, and are very rare, as is the similar “orange pearl” from the horse conch. The second largest pearl known was found in the Philippines in 1934 and is known as the “Pearl of Lao Tzu”.

In 1560 a slave found a large yellowish pearl near Panama. He was rewarded with his liberty, his owner was made Alcalde of Panama, and the gem was presented to Elisabeth of Valois, the queen of King Philip II of Spain. It was named La Peregrina and is perhaps the finest Margarita

It was found in a giant clam. It is not “pearly” in appearance, but has a surface like porcelain. It weighs 6.4 kilos. It pales into insignificance besides the largest pearl ever found, also in a giant clam and also in the Philippines. This monster, 30 centimetres wide, 67 centimetres long, weighs in at 34 kilos! Too large for the average necklace or pendant! With natural pearls being so valuable it is natural that alternatives

Padre Peter, cleric for wedding ceremonies and regular contributor to CONFETI Magazine should be sought, in the same way that cubic zirconia is often a substitute for diamonds. Imitation pearls range from those made from glass, covered in “essence d’orient” (a derivation from fish scales) to those made from “mother of pearl” or conch shell. They may look the part initially, but their lustre is soon dimmed. “Cultured” pearls are a different matter. Nowadays, two methods are employed, in both salt and fresh water. Either a tiny piece of mantle tissue (a graft) is taken from a donor shell and transplanted into a recipient shell, which then forms a protective sac. Or a tiny bead is used instead of the graft. The difference between the two methods can only be determined by x-ray. The “beaded” pearls show a solid centre with no growth rings, whereas a natural pearl has such rings. The “grafted” pearl will also show growth rings, but has a complex central cavity. In 1914 Japanese pearl farmers began growing cultured pearls in lake Biwa. So extensive and successful was this enterprise that “Biwa pearls” at one time became almost synonymous with cultured pearls in general. In 1971 Biwa pearl farmers produced nearly six tons of cultured pearls. In recent years such production has virtually ceased on account of pollution. An attempt to revive the industry in lake Kasumigaura, using Biwa pearl mussels and a related species from China also failed due to pollution. Japan has now been overtaken by China in pearl production, although Japan imports the majority of the production for processing and re-export. China now produces more than 1,500 tons per year. For smaller amounts the “momme” is used. This has been used in Japan for centuries. It was standardised in 1891 with one momme corresponding to 1/1000 kan or 3.75 grammes (simple, no? So China exports 400,000 kan per year or in momme terms…oh, forget it!) CONFETI 91

DIY TIP OF

the season

F

irst of all… Who doesn’t LOVE doughnuts? You know the answer. Those tasty round little wonder pastries come with a million different toppings and always look pretty arty, which makes them the perfect addition to your wedding. Walls with doughnuts are this season’s new trend and we can see why. Number one, it’s easy to make them yourself. Number two, they look absolutely beautiful and are definitely delicious.

92 CONFETI

3

Get some of your favourite flowers and attach them to the corners of your wall. Flowers are always a good idea! Moreover, you can integrate the wall into your overall colour theme.

4

Now it’s time for the doughnuts! Ask your caterer, cake creator or your favourite bakery to organize a colourful variety of doughnuts. Don’t forget to order a few extra… you know… you will need to sample them, you are the bride after all! Image Source: Kalm Kitchen

1

Get a pegboard or even a beautiful coloured picture frame in the size you desire your doughnut wall to be. Our advice… “The bigger, the better!” To give your doughnut wall an elegant touch use paper doilies, (find every shape and pattern you can imagine on Amazon).

2

Next step… Measure the length of your board/frame and plan out how many doughnuts you want to fit on each line. According to your measurements, add either wood dowels with glue, or extra large pins symmetrically across the board.

alloons are always a must for any celebration! How about putting them together in a creative, contemporary design?
