Cate

the Great

By Christie Holland

O

riginally from Melbourne, Australia, Cate Blanchett was born in May 1969 to her Australian mother June, a schoolteacher, and her American father, Bob, a Texan naval officer who came ashore in Melbourne and never left. Her father died when Cate was just ten years old, a tragedy that saw her go on to grow up fiercely independent. Blanchett studied at Ivanhoe East Primary School and Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School before joining Methodist Ladies’ College. She then studied Art History at the University of Melbourne before graduating from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1992. Cate made her television debut in 1993, then quickly landed roles in the miniseries Heartland in 1994 and Bordertown the following year. In 1996 she met her future husband, screenwriter Andrew Upton, while performing in a stage production of The Seagull. It wasn’t however love at first sight, “He thought I was aloof and I thought he was arrogant,” Cate recalled. “It just shows you how wrong you can be. But once he kissed me that was that.” The two were married in 1997 and welcomed Dashiell John

20

in December 2001. Their second son Roman Robert followed in April 2004, Ignatius Martin Upton was born in 2008 and they adopted daughter, Edith Vivian Patricia Upton in 2015. Cate made the move to feature films in 1997 with Paradise Road, a historical drama about a group of young women imprisoned in a Japanese war camp in World War II. Later that year she caught the attention of Hollywood with her performance opposite Ralph Fiennes in Oscar and Lucinda. Elizabeth director Shekhar Kapur saw her performance and knew he’d found his queen and as a result, in 1998 Cate’s Golden Globe-winning portrayal of England’s Queen Elizabeth I in Elizabeth earned the actress her first Academy Award nomination at the age of 29 as well as eight additional Oscar nods. The actress won a Golden Globe and British Academy Award, in addition to a host of critics’ circle awards. Blanchett was commended for capturing the emotional intricacy of the queen’s maturity from a lovestruck teen to a determined political force who represses her emotional vulnerability. Cate joined the cast of The Lord of the Rings, the film adaptations of

J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy as the elf queen Galadriel. Roles in Pushing Tin, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and The Gift followed in subsequent years. However, it was in 2005 Cate garnered her biggest cinematic accolade to date with her portrayal of Katherine Hepburn in Martin Scorcese’s biopic of the eccentric millionaire Howard Hughes, The Aviator, which finally saw her take home the Academy Award. In 2006 she starred alongside Brad Pitt in Babel before returning to royalty in Elizabeth: The Golden Age which explores Elizabeth’s political battles with Spain and her personal relationship with Sir Walter Raleigh. Blanchett earned a Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for her performance. Cate also took on another legendary portrayal, as one of the actors to portray music legend, Bob Dylan in the unconventional biopic, I’m Not There. She starred as one of several characters based on the singer at different stages in his life. As the character Jude, a star making the dramatic shift from acoustic folk to electric rock, Blanchett was praised for capturing the elusive and perplexing qualities attributed to Dylan. Her performance earned her another Academy Award nomination

and a Golden Globe Award for best-supporting actress and the same year she was named one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People In The World.” In 2008, Blanchett and Brad Pitt met once again, in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, about a man who ages in reverse time. The same year, Cate and her husband, became artistic directors of the Sydney Theatre Company. Blanchett left the position in 2013, though Upton remained. In 2010 she appeared as Marion Loxley in Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood with Russell Crowe. Thriller, Hanna followed in 2011 before Blanchett again assumed the role of Galadriel in the Hobbit trilogy; An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014), all based on the Tolkien novel that preceded The Lord of the Rings. In 2014, Cate won another Oscar for her remarkable performance as a delusional New York socialite in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine alongside Sally Hawkins, Alec Baldwin and Annie McNamara. A string of successful films continued Blanchett’s achievements including Carol, Song to Song and Thor: Ragnarok. Next came Ocean’s 8, the femaledriven reboot of the Ocean’s Eleven franchise and The House with a Clock in Its Walls, an adaptation of a 1973 children’s fantasy novel. From 2020 Cate starred in the TV miniseries Mrs. America where she portrayed activist Phyllis Schlafly who opposed the Equal Rights Amendment. In December 2021 Cate took on a role alongside Bradley Cooper in Guillermo del Toro’s film adaptation of Nightmare Alley by William Lindsay Gresham. She also appeared alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio in Don’t Look Up, written, produced and directed by Adam McKay which tells the story of two astronomers attempting to warn humanity about an approaching comet that will destroy civilisation. This year Cate will then reunite with Guillermo in the Netflix film adaptation Pinocchio and is also set to portray Lilith in Borderlands, a live-action adaption of the video game of the same name for

Lionsgate, reuniting with director Eli Roth as well as a variety of other A-list projects. Last month it was announced that Blanchett will star in Spanish film director’s Pedro Almodovar’s first English-language feature film A Manual for Cleaning Women. The film is an adaptation of Lucia Berlin’s short story collection of the same name, which includes 43 stories about women in multiple types of demanding jobs. Regarded as one of the finest actresses of her generation, Cate has built a reputation as a chameleonic character actor and continues to stun audiences with her versatility with every project she touches.

There is nothing quite like getting caught up in a good book and we all know certain songs have a way of transporting us to a magical moment. So, how do you spend your downtime? Do you pick up a heart-warming novel and disappear into an imaginative state or do you stick your headphones in, play your favourite artist and zone out? Or how about both? Each issue we bring you new releases designed to give you those moments of relaxation we all need.

THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD MOTHERS by Jessamine Chan

THE PERFECT 2 ESCAPE by Leah Konen

3

In this taut and tense debut novel, one slip in judgement lands a young mother in a government reform program where the custody of her child is at stake. Using dark wit to explore the pains and joys of the deepest ties that bind us, Chan has written a modern literary classic. A intense page-turner about the perils of “perfect” upper-middle class parenting; the violence enacted upon women by both the state and, at times, one another; the systems that separate families; and the boundlessness of love, The School for Good Mothers introduces, in Frida, an everywoman for the ages.

New friends Sam, Margaret and Diana are delighted to be getting out of the city for a girls’ weekend, they’ve bonded over their shambolic divorces, and every mile feels like another step towards putting their exes in the past. But when car trouble on their trip abandons them in the most unlikely of mountain towns, they come face-to-face with the pains and betrayals they were so desperate to leave behind. When Diana doesn’t return home after a night out, Sam and Margaret’s search for her reveals just how little they know about their friend.

A witty, warm, and bold book that traces the lives of two young Taiwanese American women as they navigate friendship, sexuality, identity, and heartbreak over two decades. Spanning countries and selves, Fiona and Jane is an intimate portrayal of a friendship, of being young and alive, and a raw and honest account of two Asian women who dare to stake a claim on joy in a changing, contemporary America.

FIONA AND JANE by Jean Chen Ho

1 JAMES MORRISON – Greatest Hits

James releases his greatest hits in a reworked new collection this month. Arriving before his ‘Greatest Hits’ tour, which kicks off in March 2022, Morrison shares a twist on the usual ‘Greatest Hits’ collection. He returned to the studio with long-time producer Mark Taylor to record new versions of thirteen of his classic songs alongside his live band. Speaking of the album he explained, “It’s been fifteen years since I started releasing music, and many of my songs over time have taken on a new life of their own: new emotions, new meanings and new feels both from the way I perform them and in the way my band has played them. I’ve also become a better singer and inhabit the songs in a different way now.”

2 LAUREL HELL – Mitski

Indie-pop artist, Laurel Hell stripped away her persona for her latest release. “I needed love songs about relationships that are not power struggles to be won or lost.” The resulting singles are brutally incisive, like “Working for the Knife,” a song that confronts the trappings of making a career in art, and the explosive synth-pop track, “The Only Heartbreaker,” where she resigns herself as the only one who takes the blame in a relationship.

THIEF - Dragon New Warm 3 BIG Mountain I Believe in You The Adrianne Lenker–fronted band reveal their 20-track album entitled Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You this month, a sprawling double-LP exploring the deepest elements and possibilities of Big Thief. Discussing the new album, Lenker said: “One of the things that bonds us together as a band is pure magic. I think we all have the same guide and none of us have ever spoken what it is because we couldn’t name it, but somehow, we are all going for the same thing, and when we hit it… we all know it’s it, but none of us to this day, or maybe ever, will be able to articulate in words what the ‘it’ is. Something about it is magic to me.” The album was produced by drummer James Krivchenia who initially pitched the recording concept for DNWMIBIY back in late 2019 with the goal of capturing the many different features of Adrianne’s song writing and the band onto a single record.

IS BETTER THAN ONE Congratulations are in order for supermodel Ashley Graham and her husband Justin Ervin who welcomed twin boys last month. The couple are already parents to one-year-old Isaac Menelik Giovanni Ervin. Sharing on Instagram the model revealed she was taking a break to rest and soak up time with her family of five, “I’m taking some time to heal up and connect with my husband and three boys,” she continued, “but I truly cannot wait to share more with you all. Much love, AG.”

West

Uncut Gems actress Julia Fox has confirmed her relationship with Kanye West following photos leaked online. In an interview, the actress talks about her whirlwind romance with the rapper, who changed his name to ‘Ye’ last year. “I met Ye in Miami on New Year’s Eve and it was an instant connection,” Julia shared. “His energy is so fun to be around. He had me and my friends laughing, dancing, and smiling all night.” Julia said she and Ye “decided to keep the energy going” by flying to New York to catch a performance on Broadway, followed by dinner at Carbone, a celebrity favourite Italian eatery in Manhattan’s West Village. But the “real Cinderella moment,” the actor claimed, took place after dinner when Ye surprised her with “an entire hotel suite full of clothes”. “It was every girl’s dream come true,” she wrote. “I don’t know how he did it, or how he got all of it there in time. But I was so surprised. Like, who does things like this on a second date? Or any date!” Describing the early days of the relationship as “so organic,” Julia added: “I don’t know where things are headed but if this is any indication of the future, I’m loving the ride.”

STEPPING

Down

Simon Cowell has made the decision to downsize Syco to focus on family life following his engagement to Lauren Silverman. The couple, who have been together for 13 years and share seven-year-old son, Eric are finally planning to tie the knot after over a decade together. Simon had always insisted he “didn’t believe” in marriage, especially in the music and TV industry but he finally changed his mind and popped the question during a romantic and sun-soaked holiday away to Barbados. Lauren was reportedly stunned by the proposal but over the moon and said yes without hesitation. Now, Simon plans to step back from some of his work-life duties and enjoy family bliss, a decision that was only enhanced by the global pandemic and his bike accident last year.

s y a PARTING W Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa and his wife, Lisa Bonet have split after 16 years together. The 42-year-old, who is well known for playing Khal Drogo took to his Instagram feed to share the news with his 16 million followers. Jason, who shares daughter Lola, 14, and son Nakoa-Wolf, 13, with Lisa, insisted that the couple still have a lot of love and affection for one another sharing, “The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. Referring to the Covid-19 pandemic, he wrote: “We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times… A revolution is unfolding and our family is of no exception… feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring and so. We share our Family news. That we are parting ways in marriage. We free each other to be who we are learning to become…” The pair met through mutual friends at a New York City jazz club, several years after Lisa’s divorce from Lenny Kravitz.

WHAT DOESN’T HAPPEN IN

Vegas

Superstar Adele has caused a bit of a stir cancelling her Las Vegas residency 24 hours before the launch. The last- minute cancellation came after a series of explosive rows about the staging derailed production. There has been uproar as some guests reportedly paid thousands for tickets and travel expenses. “I’m so sorry, but my show ain’t ready,” the star told fans in a tearful update on Instagram. “Half my team have Covid and it’s been impossible to finish the show,” she said, adding that “delivery delays” had also played havoc with her plans. She was due to play the first of 24 concerts at the Caesars Palace’s Colosseum last month. Announced late in November, the Weekends With Adele series was scheduled to have the singer performing two shows every weekend until April.

DIAMONDS EMERALDS

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly are engaged. The couple shared the actress’s unique engagement ring on Instagram following the proposal. The rocker wrote in his post: “Yes, in this life and every life beneath the same branches we fell in love under, I brought her back to ask her to marry me. I know tradition is one ring, but I designed it with Stephen Webster to be two: the emerald (her birth stone) and the diamond (my birth stone) set on two magnetic bands of thorns that draw together as two halves of the same soul forming the obscure heart that is our love.” The musician whose real name is Colson Baker and his new fiancé started dating in 2020 after meeting on the set of the indie thriller Midnight in the Switchgrass. Fox was previously married to fellow actor Brian Austin Green, with whom she shares three children. Since announcing their engagement, Fox and Kelly have received several congratulatory messages on social media from the likes of Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Travis Barker, Avril Lavigne, and others.

FORTYFIED By Ian Greenland

I remember my late 20s well. I was living with good friends in a lovely flat on the seafront in Brighton. I had a fun, sociable job running the bar in a popular comedy venue. I had a leather jacket, tight jeans and long hair which led people to assume I could rock an instrument, and a confident, cheeky demeanour which meant the frequent lock-ins at my favourite local usually turned into lay-ins with a new bunkmate. Life was good. I wasn’t worried about turning 30. Then it actually happened and like a great big predictable fucking cliché I had some kind of existential crisis... Why am I still sharing a bathroom with people

Midlife crisis stereotypes dictate I should buy a sports car, take up a thrilling new hobby or have an affair, but honestly that just sounds exhausting.

The overarching existential anxieties of my early 30s – Will my life find a direction? Will I meet the right person and have children? HENRY FORD The American industrialist and business giant founded the Ford motor company at age 40, revolutionising the manufacturing process with the moving assembly line. Thanks to this, the Ford Model T, released in 1908 was the first widely affordable automobile. It made car travel possible for millions of middle class Americans and paved the way decades later for EVERY fucking dad in the UK to drive a Mondeo.

MARTHA STEWART “America’s Housewife”, the multimulti-multi-million dollar industry that is Martha Stewart didn’t begin in earnest until she began writing cookbooks and domestically-inclined pieces in her 40s. CHARLES DARWIN Though he was a lifelong naturalist (f you’re thinking unruly pubic hair and volleyball now you’ve mixed your terms up), Darwin was 50 before his seminal work On the Origin of Species was published, uniting the scientific community and a majority of the sentient public in understanding natural selection as the basic mechanism of evolution. The fact that people who don’t believe in evolution still successfully pass on their genes is a head-scratcher but heading into my 40s, with a bald dad, it’s probably best I keep the head scratching to a minimum. Wish me luck.

“I’m passing the message to you; will you pass it on?” What started as a dream for Howard and Zalyia Silver has now become a bridge to normal living for people struggling with addiction. Somebody once told Howard Silver that by taking things one day at a time he would stay clean and sober. Almost 34 years ago he found hope and a way to beat his addiction. Having not had a drink or taken drugs since, he has fulfilled his dream to open a facility that would pass on this message. Located in a beautiful villa in Marbella, The Bridge provides personalised addiction treatment, designed around the patient.

PERFORMING AT YOUR FULL POTENTIAL FOR GUYS OVER 45 This month I have something for the guys, in particular guys in midlife, between 40 and 65, who may be experiencing symptoms of the seldom talked about, often little known, male menopause.

There’s been a surge of interest and initiatives around the female perimenopause and menopause, which is to be applauded. Celebrities including Meg Matthews (check our podcast for an interview with her) and Mariella Frostrup have penned guides to the menopause, and we’ve delivered several corporate workshops on menopause, so it’s great that this is finally getting coverage.

On the physical side symptoms can include a decline in energy, gradual loss of strength, loss of muscle mass, increase body fat, particularly in the abdominal area, erectile dysfunction and loss of libido.

Less well know is the andropause, or male menopause. Estimates vary, but somewhere between 25% to 40% of middle aged men will experience symptoms, around 10% will have acute symptoms.

Put the physical, mental and emotional together and you have the perfect driver for more psychological symptoms: a perceived lack of self-worth, loss of self-identity, and over compensating behaviour.

In fact if we look at the hormonal science of what’s happening inside the body it’s highly likely that most men will experience some of the symptoms at some point during their midlife.

This is why performance across the board can start to suffer… in relationships, business, career, sports…

So what are those symptoms? They can be broadly categorised into physical, mental and emotional, and of course all these interplay and have a causation relationship.

42

Mental and emotional symptoms can include brain fog, lack of concentration, lowered confidence, increased anxiety, increased stress and trouble sleeping.

So far so mid-life crisis and this is where the tired trope of the older man in the unbuttoned shirt buying the open top sports car comes from, an attempt to re-assert youth - but we need to look past it and see what lifestyle tweaks we can make to work with the changes we’re experiencing.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

You see science shows us it’s possible to work in harmony with our hormones (the main driver for many of these symptoms) and offset many of the negative effects. To understand what you can do you first need to understand what’s going within. For men levels of their primary sex hormone testosterone peak in their twenties, then decline at between 1 to 2% a year. Now, that might not sound a lot, but the time a man hits his fifties, those testosterone levels could be up to 50% lower then back when he was in his twenties.

Testosterone plays a key role in supporting muscle, metabolic support, strength, libido, cognitive processes, focus… As it declines, so these can to. Low levels of testosterone are also liked to increased anxiety, lowered confidence and increased body fat levels. If that wasn’t enough, at midlife we’re becoming more insulin resistant, meaning we’re less efficient at processing food for energy, meaning we’re more likely to lay excess calories down as fat.

FINALLY, THROW SOME STRESS INTO THE MIX We all know stress impacts our health, but did you know why it has such an impact on our hormonal health?

NAVIGATING THE MALE MENOPAUSE Understand your hormones Get a handle on stress

Move your body in specific ways to optimise your hormonal response Cut back on sugar, increase lean protein, focus on whole foods Look at your beliefs and work on them to reclaim your power

The stress hormone cortisol is produces from the same “mother” hormone pregnenolone so if we are producing more cortisol, there is less pregnenolone available to produce testosterone, further impacting those midlife hormonal challenges.

SO FAR SO BAD, WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT? WELL QUITE A LOT IS THE GOOD NEWS! If you want to perform at your full potential at midlife there are a number of specific things to do, right, but here’s what it comes down to in my experience: you’ve got to align your body and mind. They have to work together. What I see over and over are people thrashing their bodies but they haven’t got the mindset dialled in and it doesn’t work. They might perform well, for a while, but not to their full potential. So, you need to start exercising in the right way. Specifically start intruding short High Intensity Interval Training sessions of 15 to 20 minutes to your workouts. These are not only time and results effective but have been shown to help boost testosterone levels temporarily and bring down your metabolic age. You need to start resistance training. You can do it at home, but for guys, lifting heavy with compound moves like the squat, bench press and row also temporarily boost testosterone levels, as well as building new muscle mass, so raising metabolic rate. You have to start cutting down on sugar, which is highly calorific and inflammatory, and start adding more lean protein (fish, poultry, lean red meat, pulses) to your diet, along with dietary fibre for gut health. You need to start

eating more leafy vegetables and cut back on heavier processed carbs like bread, rices, cakes and pasta. On the mindset side, you MUST get a handle on your stress and lower those cortisol levels. Start to eliminate the stressors you can in your life (like watching too much news), learn to control your reaction to stressful events. Look at your limiting beliefs - we all have them. What beliefs about yourself could be holding you back? What new empowering beliefs would help you sustain a new healthier peak performance lifestyle? You cannot out perform your self-self-identity - sometimes we need to upgrade who we are to move to the next level. Neuroscience shows us this is possible. Our beliefs are not fixed we can alter our neural pathways and literally step into a new way of being. Finally, learn to be present, cultivate and attitude of gratitude each day, and ground yourself with focus at the start of each day. Put all these elements together and you can stride forward through male menopause (and beyond) with renewed strength, energy, power, confidence and joy for life.

Keep it Real

WE’RE ALL ABOUT

Sharing Sharing is Caring Mojo proves that a bigger house doesn’t necessarily mean bigger expenses. The innovative concept involves buying a property with 8 families, meaning each of them only has to pay 1/8 of the price and has the house available for 6 weeks a year. A perfect opportunity for people who think 6 weeks of vacation a year is more than enough, but want to spend it in a larger, more comfortable, and higher quality home. Forget the old timeshare principle. With “Mojo Sharing” you own a home, not just a block of time.

Have you always dreamed of a holiday home on the sunny Costa del Sol? What is holding you back? The maintenance? The language barrier? The legalities? We feel you. The Mojo gents are back this month to encourage people to pursue their dreams. We met up with Per and Lise, so they could tell us more about their sharing concept, which makes buying a property on the golden coast of Spain more achievable. There is no need to wait until you retire to own a holidays luxurious villa. Let us introduce you to “Mojo Sharing” and show you the multitude of benefits of second home co-ownership without all the hassle.

Lise, the “Mojo Sharing” specialist, oversees the calendar. She will ensure everything runs smoothly and every owner has equitable access to their house during high demand peak seasons, keeping it simple and fair for everyone and with full transparency and open communication between the families... worry free!. All you need to do is show up and enjoy your second home during the times that matter to you most.

They offer all kinds of properties, whether you fancy a luxurious villa in the mountains or a cozy apartment close to the beach, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The experienced team matches your needs with the wishes of other families and finds the ideal shared home for you and your loved ones.

“We created a solution for company owners to buy their second home shares through the company, so it’s tax deductible” 56

The Democratisation of Luxury The awareness of reducing our consumption has grown over the past few years. Gone are the days of 100% ownership - sharing economy is the future. Why spend one million euro on a second home when it will most likely be empty 10 months of the year? Isn’t it smarter to spend 125k and enjoy the same villa? “Mojo Sharing” makes luxury second homes accessible to more people and is the most sustainable way to own a holiday home - No space goes to waste! Mojo has partnered up with Pacaso, a Californian company - known worldwide- that recently landed in Marbella and shares the same concept of coownership.

Keep it Real

“We help clients get matched with their ideal system suiting their needs. Thanks to our trusted partners Pacaso, we can also offer financing; between 50%-60% of the 1/8 of your second home, with an interest rate of less than 4%” explains Per “No banks, no traditional Spanish mortgage nightmare procedure. Suddenly, a 3.2 million villa, which shares would be worth 400.000€, will be achievable for less than 200.000€!”

Company Funds, Private Use

We Manage it, You Own it - Hassle Free It’s your house. You own 12,5% of the shares in notary... or more! You can always opt to own two or more blocks of shares. Whenever you decide to sell them, you’ll benefit from the rising value of the property, and who better to guide you than the real estate experts themselves! Their wealth of experience enables them to oversee the complete service, taking care of anything and everything

– property management from the rotation booking system ensuring fairness for all, administration, taxes, maintenance, cleaning and rental if applicable. “We want a trouble-free process for you, so you can get that holiday feeling right away” - says Per. “Mojo Sharing” makes second home ownership simple, sustainable and affordable. Join the Sharing family and pursue that dream!

Foreigners, especially Scandinavians, encounter a big barrier when buying a holiday home in Spain: Mr. Tax man. If their money is in their companies, it’s impossible to take it out without losing over 50%. “We’ve found a way through that,” says Per. “We’ve created a solution for company owners to buy their second home shares through the company, so it’s tax friendly”. This is an extremely attractive solution for business owners!.

Self-Financed You can also opt for a property fully serviced by Mojo Rentals. Renting out your allocated 6 weeks would cover your annual costs, making the investment completely self-funded. “If someone decides to rent out his shares of the property, the majority of the gain will cover his own costs, but part of it also goes to the maintenance of the property, so everybody wins,” says Lise. “Mojo Rentals” is more than happy to help you with the entire process.

Mojo Sharing makes luxury second homes accessible to more people and is the most sustainable way to own a holiday home

Change your perspective by changing the walls that surround you. Wallpaper has come back to the future in Vista Lago Residences. Article by Vivion O’Kelly. Images courtesy of BRIGHT hese days we can change the entire perspective of a room quite easily, altering its mood to suit ours and bringing a new, almost magic, dimension into our lives in a way that was not possible in the past without spending vast amounts of money. A Vista Lago residence could not be described as a traditional build. Normal house maintenance is largely a thing of the past, because almost everything in these villas, including what they are built of, is of the highest quality natural materials, and all 18 of them have been designed and built to the highest standards of sustainability. But there is one design element that might spark a tinge of nostalgia in older residents, and that is wallpaper. Yes, wallpaper has come back to the future in Vista Lago. Not the wallpaper some of us remember struggling to paint with watery glue and attempting to stick to uncooperative surfaces many years ago, but a new kind of wall covering that has nothing in common with what we remember, except that it decorates a wall. Best described as wall coverings, or in many cases, as murals, this wallpaper will open your eyes to a feature of interior design many of us are still unfamiliar with.

The wallpaper used in Vista Lago is not actually made of paper, but of washable materials that do not scratch easily, such as plastic or composite materials that will last a lifetime. Here we take a closer look at some of the options available to all potential Vista Lago owners, which they can choose (as they can choose all interior decorative options) according to individual taste. Although the range of subcategories in contemporary wallpaper is wider, we divide them into three basic categories: photorealism, patterned and mural.

PHOT OR EA L I SM No repeat patterns here, but the use of digital printing technology to create what looks like an extension of a room in what can best be described as magical. You pick the emotion and mood you want for any specific space and the wallpaper utterly transforms it. The scene may be a known work of art not subject to copyright, a landscape, seascape, portrait or any other motif your imagination comes up with. The leaders in this new art form are the Italian company Creativespace. In some cases the image is more traditionally mural, in that perspective

63

KEEP IT REAL

is not extended from the room itself, making for a self-contained image on the wall, while in other cases, the image is lined up with the proportions of the room to create a kind of walk-in effect, where the line between two and three dimensions is blurred.

P A TTER NED Almost all wallpaper of times past was patterned, and we use the word loosely here. The essential difference

64

between this wallpaper and the two other categories we list is that patterned wallpaper, with no specific scene to be framed, will cover any size, since the motif repeats itself ad infinitum. But there the similarity ends. There may be flower motifs, but they are used in a very different way from before, and the repeating patterns are generally designed in such a way that it is difficult to see where repetition begins. Patterned wallpaper is, nevertheless, generally painted rather than

photographed, and the best examples of this category can be seen in the work of a Finnish company named Feathr. The company founders were fed up with what they called ‘white box minimalism’, which has dominated interior design for many decades. Brighter colours, bolder patterns and wild textures were needed, they decided, and a good example of the result is their Oh La La design that won the Homes & Gardens Wallpaper of the Year award, accurately described as ‘distressed shabby chic’.

KEEP IT REAL

M U R AL This is the kind of wallpaper that mostly resembles a painting, and we have frequently used the work of Australian artist Diana Watson, whose stunning and technically brilliant flower paintings have been transformed into single wallpaper pieces (pictured above). She does not use flowers in traditional still-life paintings, but creates different moods in many different ways by exploring the infinity of emotion that can be created by colour and form through the flower motif. Her designs can be used to cover entire walls or as giant murals framed within the wall itself. In many cases, the colours and tones of the whole room have been chosen to reflect those of the wallpaper/ painting.

have designed, providing contrast or complement as needed, or making the wallpaper the focus of a room or a background element. But however it is used, it has become a popular design feature of a Vista Lago villa.

TIPS TO MAKE YOUR BEDROOM FEEL LIKE YOUR FAVOURITE HOTEL

by Dominique Alexandra Forsström

. ADD A STATEMENT BED The number one thing that hotels have that normal bedrooms often don’t is a statement bed. It’s a great place to start in order to make a big difference in your bedroom as it’s the biggest piece that will always take up the most amount of space, so it makes sense to have it be the main focus point

66

of the room. Having a shape different to a square also helps when you’re trying to make all of the elements work together and not be boring – they add a beautiful luxury designed element that most standard bedrooms often skip over. Above: Camerich Alison Bed.

. STATEMENT WALLS Apart from statement beds, lots of hotels also have statement walls that can add a really cool feature to the bedroom. I love using wallcovering on just the wall behind the bed for quick and easy high impact – it’s also a great hack financially as you can just wallpaper one wall and leave the rest in its original white state. Upholstered fabric panels behind the bed are also an option I really love to incorporate in my projects as they’re super effective in warming up the space and visually adding height. Wood panels are great in adding an interesting feature behind the bed too and you can incorporate indirect LED lighting to create an even grander feel! So many hotels make the bed wall the main focus, and while accent walls can be hard to nail, the key is to have some contrast (but not too much) and play with layers and light to achieve a magnificent end result! 3. COMFORT IS KEY I highly recommend adding in a comfy rug under your bed to get that cozy hotel vibe and feel (especially if you have stone floors that can be quite cold to the touch) and carpets also ground the bed in the space as a focal point. You can also consider a textured or patterned rug as it will add more interest to the bedroom without being in your eyeline, so it won’t feel overwhelming! Another key element for making your bedroom comfortable is investing in bedding and sheets, as they will transform your experience of getting into bed into a luxurious ritual you will look forward to every day! I usually choose bed linen in a silky satin finish for my interior design projects, and have the possibility of incorporating a custom designed embroidered logo for the sheets and towels. A good mattress is another key element to consider - if you’ve ever experienced a great mattress at a hotel, it’s like you’ve been transported into another heavenly dimension, so if you decide to splurge on this item, it will surely change the way you feel about your room and the quality of your sleep. I’m a big fan of Hästens and Treca if you need somewhere to start. Finally, don’t forget that big plush pillows are super essential to make your bedroom have that super luxe feel and look!

. DON’T IGNORE WINDOW TREATMENTS Hotels almost always have two sets of curtains, one sheer and one blackout, as it gives multiple options for letting light in while having privacy during all times of the day. The importance of blackout curtains for sleeping cannot be looked over, especially living in a country like Spain, because unless you have exterior blinds that you can use to block the light, it can get really bright during early Summer mornings and evenings. If you do happen to have exterior blinds, I would certainly recommend sheer net curtains for privacy during the day, and fixed decorative curtains panels at either side of the window to add a subtle pop of colour and warmth into the room.

5. ADD A SEATING AREA Nowadays, guests are fully living in hotel spaces for a few days at a time, so designers have to be conscious that guests need a place to take off their shoes, have a place to sit while enjoying a cup of tea or coffee or have somewhere to seat a guest if they are visiting. So having a seating moment is highly important in a bedroom, and placing an armchair in a corner is a great opportunity to add another dose of texture or colour. Pair with a floor lamp and side table, and voilà! Right: Gubi Pacha armchair with armrests

6. MULTIPLE LIGHTING OPTIONS

. SYMMETRY OR ASSYMETRY?

Most hotels are known for having multiple lighting options, and it’s not uncommon to have regular lamps at the sides of the bed and reading lamps. Especially in small bedrooms where you need to maximize space, I love having sculptural pendant lamps at either side of the bed to free up the space on top of the night stands. Don’t forget how important it is to find interesting lighting that you like in order to make a room really stand out and feel well designed. Finally, always look for lighting that gives off a warm, soft glow to get into full relaxation mode!

Hotels normally keep the symmetry in the nightstands and lighting, as it’s pleasing to the eye and this way the design tends to be very comfortable with less surprises. However, I’ve recently been having lots of fun with asymmetric designs, leaving at one side a night table and adding on the other a small vanity with mirror and low seating. It’s a great way to maximize functionality, especially if you’re tight on space.

CREATING A

DREAM HOME

-Part 2

“We took a really close look at how people live these days and then designed the villa, not the other way around.” Article by Vivion O’Kelly. Images courtesy of UDesign

[] In part 1 of ‘Creating a Dream Home’, Jason Harris, CEO and Creative Director of UDesign, whose architecture and interior design company have partnered with BRIGHT Marbella to design and build international awardwinning luxury properties in Marbella and many other parts of the world, spoke about the views from his new project, Villa Nabu. In this follow-up article, he takes us through the family lounge, kitchen and dining areas of the villa..

71

Home Couture

THE KITCHEN “Kitchens are not what they used to be. Downton Abbey is history long gone. No butlers snapping their fingers at the kitchen staff these days, no doors to close in the dining room, no shutting yourself away inside the house to eat. People just don’t live like that anymore. The kitchen is now very much part of the family experience, and when in it, we don’t want to cut ourselves off from the rest of the main living areas. It was always, to a large extent, the heart of the home, and it still is. The difference is that now it is fully integrated into the rest of the ground floor.” “We designed this kitchen with this concept in mind. Take television, for example. Like it or not, family viewing has become a much-loved family activity that we can also share with close friends. We like to watch programmes together and comment on them. We like to get up once in a while to make a cup of coffee or a sandwich without missing anything. People spend a lot of time in the kitchen, and watching television, which makes it logical that we should be able to do both at the same time. So when designing the kitchen, we looked at how people live first and then designed the space, not the other way around.”

72

Home Couture

“The concept also extends to the way we work, play and communicate. Take a look at the breakfast table attached to the island and you’ll certainly not notice the hidden electrical socket we installed there. This is not just a table, but a bar, a work area, a cosy dining area for the family and friends, a place to sit and chat to whoever is cooking. This is where we can plug in our devices and check our mail, our social media accounts, whatever we like without having to head for the formal office.” “Visually, the kitchen area is not easy to identify from across the room. That is, of course, as it should be in the design concept that guided us through the project. The entire kitchen is a design element within the whole, different only in its veined marble finish and the fittings one can see only if closely observed.” “But all that was secondary to our main design concept, which was the views. When we first looked around us on this site before even thinking about design, we knew what had to be done. This was the opportunity to show how a villa could be designed with clear views from every room. When standing behind the island in the kitchen, you can enjoy the same views as in the sitting room. Looking out, you see nothing but the Mediterranean Sea and Africa beyond. We knew on that first day what had to be done and we did it.”

THE DINING AREA “The dining area could be described as warm, cosy, inviting and intimate. And simple too. A great composer will set the mood with a few notes. A great dancer with a few movements. A great artist needs no more than a few lines to do the same, and we do it with table and chairs and not much else. That makes getting it right all the more difficult, but the result is worth it. Beautiful walls, beautiful floors, beautiful furniture, natural light flowing in from all sides and from above, where a kind of large skylight takes up much of the ceiling. The materials are natural, from stone and wood to natural fabrics and greenery.” “At night, when most of us choose to dine or entertain, the benefits of topquality illumination design become apparent. The wooden slats you see on entering the house are illuminated at night, creating a lighting feature and adding to the ambience. The light shimmers through the leaf-like chandelier over the table. And those facing the sea might catch a glimpse of the lights of Northern Morocco on a clear night.” “Don’t forget, this is Spain, where we have all learned to appreciate the value of sitting around the table for hours after the meal has ended, just laughing, chatting and putting the world to order. We don’t have a name for it, like the Spanish do, but we can do it just as well as they can, if our immediate surroundings seduce us into doing so.”

LIVING WITH VIEWS “The villa is not huge, nor is it small. It is exactly the right size for a normal family, with extra room for guests. Many architects just keep going bigger and bigger, until they lose sight of the concept of cosiness and intimacy. We wanted size to relate directly to need, not to exceed it, and if you look around the terrace here you see the same idea: no great expanses of terrace or lawn separating you from the sea below, but a more natural flow that we helped create by conscious design. The closer the view, the more connected we are with it.” “The trees in the garden blend with the mountains behind, complementing them. We wanted a kind of infinity view of the sea. The windows, and the thickness of the frames, were designed to see the views without seeing the windows themselves. We want to live with the views, not just look through windows at them. And that more or less sums up our approach to designing this villa.”

Sales of electric cars peaked around 1910, and by 1942 there were 300 companies in America manufacturing electric cars powered by heavy and inefficient lead-acid batteries. Almost all these firms went to the wall when the internal combustion engine finally became reliable because petrol powered cars were cheaper and offered vastly superior range and convenience. With EVs the up and coming powertrain solution, the ways in which we assess the good, the bad and the ugly have had to be recalibrated. Fitness for purpose is undoubtedly top of the list, with range anxiety the biggest killer of EV dreams for would-be owners in the real world. Addressing the range issue head-on, the Mercedes VISION EQXX Concept unveiled at the 2022 CES in Las Vegas in early January, delivers a raft of cuttingedge technologies all tightly focused on attaining the Holy Grail of greater efficiency. “Electric range is a very complex technical challenge. On the face of it the easiest way to extend range is to install a bigger battery, but size and weight leads to diminishing returns,” explains Joerg Bartels, Vice President for Vehicle Engineering and Overall Vehicle Functions. “This is neither the smartest route nor the best use of scarce resources. The VISION EQXX is the result of our exploring new ways to increase the range of an electric car through raising all-round efficiency to a whole new level.” “The XX suffix augments the Mercedes-Benz EQ brand with the X-factor of electric mobility that thinks beyond limitations, and the X-division collaborative development approach,” explains Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management at Daimler AG and Chief Technology Officer for Development & Procurement. In a revolutionary reversal of the automotive model the industry has used until now where electronics and software play the role of supporting actors to the hardware, the EQXX is effectively a software driven vehicle. What this means is that computer digital simulation played a greater and

80

more holistic role in the design and confirmation of its systems than ever, while the performance and behaviour of the actual vehicle are almost totally software governed. The VISION EQXX project went from white paper to completed vehicle in just 18 months. The crossfunctional, multi-disciplinary design and development team was drawn from the talent of Mercedes R&D in Stuttgart, the Mercedes Formula 1 team, as well as a diverse array of start-ups, partners and institutions from around the world. Mercedes claims that the sustainable manufacturing processes utilising recycled and plant-based materials for lower waste and a lower carbon footprint result in their most efficient car ever. Importantly, the technologies it showcases can be rapidly introduced into production EQ models, so its CES

debut is both proof of concept and a vanguard of things to come. To achieve optimal performance and range, the design team had to seamlessly integrate the best possible aerodynamics, the lowest possible weight, a battery with best possible energy density, and the most efficient powertrain into a package uncompromised in space, comfort and Mercedes’ modern luxury. All-in-all a pretty tall order. Over the years Mercedes has proven time and again that significant gains in performance and economy can be made through aerodynamic efficiency. The W124 of 1984 stood out in this respect, its upright, square-rigged profile recording a sensational 0.28 Cd in basic 200/200D form. Nearly 30 years later the CLA 200 of 2013 posted a 0.22 Cd, the lowest drag coefficient ever recorded by a volume production car.

The smoothly honed body is built on a 2,800mm wheelbase, which is 40mm less than the current C-Class. This is significant because the lessons learned here are aimed at the next generation of MMA (Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture) for compact and medium cars. The short nose and long, tapered tail that incorporates a rear track 50mm narrower than the front, contributes to its aerodynamic efficiency. The flat bottom is home to an innovative and aerodynamically neutral integrated battery cooling plate, while various other active and passive aerodynamic elements are incorporated into the bodywork. Taking structural lessons from Mother Nature, a plethora of lightweight materials in the “bionic” structure aid the weight reduction cause. The bodyshell is formed from MS1500 ultra-high strength steel, which combines low weight with high strength, while the strong and light bespoke rear floor panel is the largest structural aluminium single casting in the current Mercedes inventory. OE manufacturers have used glass-fibre suspension springs before, so it is no surprise to find glass-fibre-

reinforced plastic springs developed together with Rheinmetall Automotive helping to reduce weight. Thanks to aluminium brake discs and 20-inch diameter forged magnesium wheels, unsprung weight is also low. Whether the discussion is electric motors and batteries or internal combustion engines, efficiency and range are inexorably linked. The dedicated electric drive unit in the EQXX consists of an electric motor, transmission and power electronics. Addressing the critical battery weight and energy density issues to develop a powerful battery with an energy density of 400 Wh/l, yet compact enough for installation in a compact car required a new approach to efficiency. Since power, packaging and low weight are most critical in motorsport it is no surprise to learn that the route to this solution also involved technology transfer from the Mercedes F1 race team. This new battery technology jointly developed by Mercedes and HPP for the EQXX results in a package half the volume and 30% lighter than a conventional Lithium-Ion battery for a given energy capacity.

Featuring a new generation of silicon carbides, the in-house developed power electronics unit is based on the one in the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE hypercar, whose 1.6 litre combustion engine hails from Formula 1. Featuring a superefficient thermal-management system it has a hitherto unachievable 95% energy transfer efficiency from battery to driven wheels. An existing technology used on the EQXX to help extend its

range is the ultra-thin solar cells incorporated into the roof panel. These feed the battery system to potentially extend the cars range by up to 25 km. With a maximum power output of 150 kW (201 hp) the EQXX consumes just 10 kW/h per 100km (over six miles per kWh), a dramatic improvement over the 15 kW/h or more typical of existing EV powertrains. In conventional ICE car terms this is equivalent to 1.0 L/100 km, 282 mpg (UK), or 235 mpg (US).

ONE OF THE BEST WAY S TO I M P R O V E E F F I C I E N C Y I S TO REDUCE LOSSES, explains Eva Greiner, chief engineer of the electric drive system at Mercedes-Benz.

“We worked on every part of the system to reduce energy consumption and losses through system design, material selection, lubrication and heat management. And our fantastic simulation tools quickly helped us find out what works and what doesn’t.” The headline number is a potentially range over 1,000 km (600 miles), which equates to the distance from Berlin to Paris on one charge. Currently, Mercedes uses ZF powertrain modules and Valeo Siemens electric motors. But just as they commissioned their own in-house gearbox plant in Stuttgart -Unterturkheim nearly 20 years ago, near future plans include moving the design and production of e-motors, battery and associated power electronics in-house. Whether the component list will also include the inverter that transfers energy from the battery to the e-motors has yet to be decided. The plush, beautifully detailed cabin is every bit as futuristic as

the exterior. Focused on a few modules that embrace simple, organic shapes, the radical design ethos jettisons traditional materials in favour of lightweight, sustainable materials sourced from start-ups around the world. Extensive use is made of recycled waste materials, such as the recycled PET bottles used in a shimmering textile to enhance the floor area and door trim. Higher up in the interior, the designers used DINAMICA® made from 38% recycled PET to create a wrap-around effect linking the upper edge of the one-piece screen with the doors and headliner. The interior also features UBQ material, a sustainable plastic substitute made from household and municipal landfill waste. Supple and soft to the touch, Deserttex® is a sustainable cactus-based animal-free leather alternative made from pulverised cactus fibres combined with a sustainable biobased polyurethane matrix. The carpets are made from 100% bamboo fibre, a fast-growing and renewable resource with a luxurious look and feel.

Stunning to look at, intuitive to work with and in tune with the human mind, the first ever completely seamless display in a Mercedes-Benz spans 47.5 inches between the A-pillars. With an 8K (7680x660 pixels) resolution, the thin, lightweight mini-LED display is a portal connecting occupants with the car and the world outside. The Mercedes-Benz team worked with navigation experts NAVIS Automotive Systems, inc. (NAVIS-AMS) to develop the first real-time 3D navigation system on a screen of this size. It performs seamless zoom and scroll functions from satellite view down to a height of 10 metres in the 3D city representation.

overview of the journey. This is again aimed at reducing the energy consumption of the display. The audio system in the VISION EQXX is integrated into the UI/ UX, and delivers an impressive 4D experience. As a powerful sound is a significant energy consumer, the engineers optimised the sound experience while minimising energy consumption. The one-piece display is also highly energy efficient. Its miniLED backlight consists of more than 3000 local dimming zones, meaning it consumes power only as and when needed in specific parts of the screen.

Reducing the overall number of speakers and positioning them very close to the individual occupants dramatically reduces the distance the sound travels. Two broadband speakers installed in each headrest are paired with a bass exciter in each seat.

The 3D navigation screen adapts to the type of content being shown. PARK LIFE By Ian Greenland

I started 2022 off with a bang. That was the sound I heard as I reverse-parked my generic, oversized family wagon on the side of a busy street, triumphantly noting the lack of any other parked vehicles but somehow ignoring the rather bulbous tree overhanging the edge of the pavement. Picking up broken glass and plastic from my rear tail-lights and later attempting to crowbar my inside-out rear bumper outside out once again, it occurred to me this was the second time a tree had got the better of me and my motor in just four years. Where some might have reflected on their own levels of distraction, carelessness or depth perception, my pride, more damaged than my car, placed the blame for this squarely in the arboreal realm. It’s insidious I thought, the way they sneak up on us over decades, sometimes centuries. Then there’s the camouflage. The twigs and leaves so they blend in. Nobody would blame me if my Honda winged a squaddie on manoeuvres, so how is it my fault if I twat a sycamore on the school run?? As I detailed my plans to join the corporations in ridding the world of these sap-filled menaces over dinner that night, the uncontrollable tears of my rope swingloving son eventually jarred something deep inside me. Perhaps, just perhaps I was directing my rage at the wrong target... It wasn’t the trees’ fault and it certainly wasn’t mine. It was my car’s fault. Why couldn’t it drive itself? My son puts his own socks on and he’s only 6. My car’s 15. Tech bods have been banging on about driverless vehicles for decades so why am I still apparently responsible for avoiding huge slabs of living wood jumping out at me? And I’m not the only one. Statistics show the vast majority of people still have to personally control their own combustible death traps - the deleterious effect this attention-drain has on our screen time cannot be overstated. Then again, with WHO

86

estimating more than 1.3 million annual traffic accident deaths, perhaps our attention’s not up to it. A driverless future could be safer, more environmentally friendly, less stressful and gloriously free of Jeremy Clarkson. So where are we on the whole autonomous vehicle thing? In short, some way off, but making progress. There are a number of hurdles to overcome. As driverless, rule-abiding, proximity-regulated vehicles gradually

integrate onto the roads, their already mind-boggling programming will still need to accommodate the fly in the ointment that is humanity. As a steady procession of Teslas serenely make their way along city streets, Barry’s

souped up VW on a mad dash to the McDonalds drive-thru is sure to ruffle some algorithmic feathers. A driverless future would require a huge shift in public perception. Whilst we seemingly accept human error resulting in thousands of unsung human deaths a year, we might be less tolerant of our malfunctioning machine subordinates switching us off. Where liability can currently be attributed to individuals, insurance companies and legal systems would need to shift their modelling to vehicle and manufacturer

responsibility. There’s also a huge amount of infrastructure necessary to realising this as a reality, with the burden expected to fall on already cash-strapped local councils to literally pave the way at huge start-up cost for projected benefits many years off. The largest piece of the puzzle and the primary focus at present is still safety, as programmers collaborate with engineers and even psychologists to keep autonomous vehicles on the straight and narrow. Whilst the technology already operates

successfully in industrial setting such as mines, ports and hangars, scaling it for the complexities of all public spaces remains the goal. Testing grounds such as the 16 acre Mcity Test Facility in Michigan introduce myriad hazards and real-world scenarios into the computational modelling of the cars. Driverless taxis are already operating in clearly defined areas of Phoenix, Arizona and Shanghai, China. New York, San Francisco and California can expect similar in the next two years. Widespread use of pods, transport shuttles and off-highway vehicles is expected to normalise the technology and prove its efficacy before it expands to more vehicle types and use cases. The military and other industries operating in high-risk environments have in many areas already embraced the technology. But as with most aspects of the market, the public generally need options to be both convenient and affordable to embrace them en-masse. The corollary benefit of breaking our reliance on the typical model of car ownership is an abundance of extra living space and a reduction in pollution. In a future where safe, efficient transportation options arrive at a click and proceed to their destination unencumbered by current levels of traffic and driver error, roads are not clogged with millions of cars which spend the majority of their resource-sapping lives idling at lights or simply parked up (sometimes against trees). Consequently, narrower roads would permit more green space, and electric autonomous vehicles would mean greener greens.... But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Despite encouraging examples, most experts agree we’re still more than a decade away from seeing driverless cars widely integrated on the streets and certainly a long way from them being affordable for widespread private ownership. The necessary advancements in the core technology and the infrastructure to enable and support it alongside the requisite developments in public perception mean we’re looking at progress on a continuum as opposed to an overnight disruption of the norm....

I better learn to use my mirrors.

COSTA CUISINE

Let’s Sticky Together Hello lovelies, how is it February already ?!! I wanted to share with you a revamped favourite of mine, a modern healthy twist on the time served, traditional perennial pudding that is sticky toffee …with custard. Bettina, our resident foodie, offers her insider knowledge on plant based cuisine and takes us on a culinary journey as she travels the world in search of gastronomic inspiration.

It just so happens to be plant based, gluten free and one of my favourite desserts of all time! This recipe is an original from my first book Happy Food that has recently had a makeover and been re-released into the world as Happy Vegan Food. I was gluten free for many years until I re-introduced it a few years ago. It upset me for a long time when I discovered I was intolerant to gluten, particularly when I realised I would not be able to enjoy my favourite desserts. I promise you, my vegan and gluten free version of sticky toffee pudding is better than the original, especially when it’s topped with sticky toffee sauce and vanilla vegan custard! The addition of spices here is essential and will warm you from the inside out. Not only will they add taste and flavour but cinnamon, cardamom and clove have a history of amazing properties. More on this in next month’s column.

For now the proof is in the pudding and I urge you to make this one

My three books are all available on AMAZON.

COSTA CUISINE

Sticky Toffee Pudding With Salted Caramel Sauce & Custard INGREDIENTS • 250 ml almond milk or other plant milk (see pages 137-139 of Happy Food for homemade milk recipes) • 300g medjool dates, stoned • 80g coconut sugar • 125ml coconut oil • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda • 95g gluten free flour • 1 vanilla pod, scraped • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom

• 1/2 teaspoon ground clove • pinch of pink Himalayan salt • For the sticky toffee sauce • 140g coconut sugar • 250ml coconut milk • 1/2 teaspoon salt • For the custard • 2 tablespoons very fine cornflour • 500 ml coconut milk • 3 tablespoons maple syrup • 1 whole vanilla pod, scraped

DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 190 degrees. Line a 20cm square cake tin with greaseproof paper or use a good quality silicone mould. In a small saucepan gently heat the milk and dates for 5-10 minutes until the dates have softened. Once softened, set aside. In a blender, blitz the coconut sugar and coconut oil until the sugar has mostly disintegrated.Add the bicarbonate of soda to the milk and date mix. It will start to fizz and bubble, but that is okay. In a bowl, combine the flour, vanilla, spices, pinch of salt, coconut oil and sugar along with the date and milk mixture and give everything a good stir. Pour into the cake tin and bake for 30 minutes. Once done, transfer to a wire rack to cool. For the sticky toffee sauce While the pudding is cooking, make the sauce. Heat a pan over a medium heat, add the coconut sugar and coconut milk and let it heat through. Add the salt and bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Let it simmer for 20 minutes until the caramel has thickened. Stir occasionally to make sure it doesn’t burn. A great way of knowing if it is ready is to see if it sticks to the back of your spoon. Stir in a little more salt if desired and either use it straight away drizzled over your cake, or let it cool before storing in a glass jar – it will become even thicker as it cools. For the custard Blend the cornflour with a little coconut milk in a medium pan over a medium heat. Whisk until you have an even consistency. Add the rest of the ingredients including the scraped vanilla pod. Whisk until the cornflour and vanilla are fully incorporated into the milk. Whisk until the custard starts to thicken and then, as soon as the mixture begins to boil, take off the heat and let it cool.

Every year more and more people take the decision to opt for a healthier lifestyle and in doing so become more conscious about what they eat. At Hustle n’ Flow, they seek to encourage people to look after themselves and make better food choices without compromising on taste.

Where it all began

We all know the importance of healthy eating is gaining rapid momentum. There are more veggies, vegans and glutenfree foodies than ever before. Besides, we live I recently had the pleasure to talk with Hustle n’ Flow is more in a time where people capture Darryn and Veronika, than good quality everything the founders of Hustle n’ dishes. It’s all about the experience

to seek inspiration and refuel, feeding both body and mind. A place that breathes creativity.

The owners managed to create a homeaway-from-home experience. A place where people can sit back and relax, like an extension of their living room. Darryn and Veronika have been very creative in decorating the venue and making it a place that feels like home. Hustle n’ Flow is more than good quality dishes. It’s a fun and vibrant environment

Conscious about the environment The Hustle team tries to source as much locally and strives to be as organic as possible, from ethically farmed eggs to sustainably sourced free trade coffee. It’s not always easy, says Darryn. “For example, avocados don’t grow all year round, but people want to eat them all the time. We want to have as low a

carbon footprint as possible, but we also have a business to run. There is a bit of a compromise that must be made, but we really make the effort to promote environmentally friendly choices.”

Team Culture matters The pair highlight the importance of a team culture, as they listen to everyone and offer co-workers the chance to bring new ideas to the table. Their business model that gives employees the opportunity to own a bit of the company, motivates the team to do their job in the best possible way. “It’s a win-win.”

From San Pedro to Riyadh After the runaway success of the original Hustle n’ Flow outlet in San Pedro, the founders launched a second restaurant in Gibraltar, which is currently one of the Rock’s top rated restaurant on Google. The Hustle n’ Flow on the Golden Mile just opened this month, and it will be closely followed by the House of Flow project in Benahavis, where the team intend to create a venue that they can call a culture hub and foster a community experience. Hustle n’ Flow will soon be known in other iconic cities, including Doha, Budapest and Riyadh. What started as a corner cafe project, is becoming a roaring success with franchises worldwide!. @ hustlenfloweatery @ houseofflowbenahavis
