orn into a showbiz family, Blake was destined for fame from a young age. Her father, Ernie, was an actor and director and her mother, Elaine, a talent scout. One of five children, all of whom are now acting, Blake initially showed little interest in her early years and instead competed in cheerleading in her teens, was class president and a member of her school’s show choir. However, throughout her childhood she revealed her parents took her to acting classes they taught as they did not want to leave her with a babysitter. She continued, that watching her parents teaching acting helped her learn the “drills”.
Teen Choice Award for TV actress and TV Breakout Star and in 2011 she was featured in the annual TIME magazine 100 influential people article. Following the success of the show, Lively seemed to be indemand and on track for the big screen. In a January 2010 profile, Esquire called her, “the most promising and interesting and talented young actress of the year.” In 2010 Blake showed her grittier side taking on the role of a young mother in Ben Affleck’s crime thriller The Town which achieved widespread critical acclaim. Her next film, The Green Lantern alongside Ryan Reynolds received disappointing reviews but for Lively and Reynolds the film is where their love story begun. The lovebirds quickly became inseparable buying a home together in upstate New York in April 2012 before marrying in September 2012 near Charleston, South Carolina. Blake’s friend Florence Welch, of Florence and the Machine, performed at the reception for the 70 guests.
"People ask me why I don’t tweet. Honestly, I’m so sick of myself."
Blake had dreams of attending Stanford University but her older brother, Eric relentlessly pushed her to try acting. “He was trying to get me to make life decisions at 15!” she recalled, “I was really busy at school and I would have these agents calling and saying, ‘We have an appointment for you.’ It was really hard to say no, because I didn’t want to make my brother upset.” At the age of 17, Blake finally agreed to attend a few auditions. She found almost instant success landing a major role in the 2005 blockbuster, ‘The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants,’ which filmed during the summer between her junior and senior years at Burbank High. Her performance earned her a Teen Choice Award and a nomination for Breakout Movie Star. Blake completed her high school education and graduated before taking on her next role alongside Justin Long and Jonah Hill in the comedy, Accepted. The following year everything changed when Lively landed her most famous role to date on the CW’s hit teen drama, Gossip Girl. The show followed a group of privileged teens on New York’s Upper East Side and Blake played the lead role of Serena van der Woodsen, a stunning blonde bombshell and somewhat reformed party girl. Gossip Girl quickly developed a cultlike fan base and Blake’s character, in particular, had a massive influence on current fashion trends with multiple magazine covers and a controversial Rolling Stone magazine fashion shoot amongst her achievements. Her popularity was fuelled when it was revealed she was dating her onscreen love interest, Penn Badgley. The couple dated for three years and Gossip Girl aired its final episode in December 2012. Throughout the show Blake was awarded both the
In December 2014 the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named James. This didn’t stop Blake from continuing her acting career with the romantic fantasy, The Age of Adaline, hitting screens in 2015, where she played a woman who, as the result of a freak accident, didn’t age beyond 29 years. In 2016, the film The Shallows followed, as did the birth of their second daughter, Ines.
Y, I DON’T LAUGH, SO MY NN FU NG HI ET M SO Y SA I N HE "W AHAHA!!” SO PEOPLE AH "H KE LI S AY W AL E AR S ND FRIE I ALWAYS THINK: , EM TH H IT W T NO I’M N HE W KNOW. I’M FUNNY; THEY JUST THIS PERSON DOESN’T KNOW THINK I’M A JERK"
Blake’s career continued to flourish and in 2018 she starred in Paul Feig’s comedy-thriller, A Simple Favour, opposite Anna Kendrick. Her latest film, The Rhythm Section, is set to be released next month with Paramount pictures. 2019 didn’t show any sign of slowing down as the Reynolds welcomed their third child, the birth of the baby wasn’t revealed until October when Ryan posted a photo of the couple and their child. Always ones to keep out of the
spotlight, the duo are yet to reveal the baby’s name but insinuated it was another daughter in a recent interview. If 2019 is anything to go by, we look forward to seeing what Blake and her famous family get up to throughout 2020.

n her recent appearance on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, Caitlyn Jenner revealed that the first of her children she shared her transition with was her son, Brandon, “he said to me, ‘Dad, I’ve always been so proud to be your son, but I’ve never been more proud of you than right now’,” she shared. “The only one that was really – and I still, even to today, can’t quite figure it out – was Khloe,” the Olympian continued. “Khloe for some reason, was pissed off about something through the whole process. Honestly, it’s been five or six years and I haven’t really talked to her since,” explained the 70-year-old. “We were really close. I raised her since she was 5 years old.” Khloe was noticeably absent from Caitlyn’s 70th birthday bash earlier in the year despite Kim, Kourtney, Kendal, Kylie and Brandon all in attendance. Come on Khloe, life is too short for family feuds.
HUSTLE
S
he hustled her way to a nomination, and it paid off. The Golden Globes were announced last month and in the running for Best Supporting Actress is Jennifer Lopez for her role as veteran stripper Ramona Vega in ‘Hustlers’. The singer and actress was last nominated for the Golden Globes in 1998 when she was up for Best Actress in a Motion Picture for her performance in ‘Selena.’ ‘Hustlers’ is based on a real-life group of strippers that worked together to scam Wall Street clients. It’s not just the Golden Globes that have taken note, as the star nabbed a Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and most recently took home Best Supporting Actress from the LA Film Critics Association. Talking of the film Lopez revealed, “The movies that I look for now, I’m looking for not just interesting and multi-layered characters, which Ramona really was, but something that tells you about what’s going on in the culture.”

TIME TO GO GREY
I
t has been revealed that Daniel Craig will be the first James Bond to have grey hair in the upcoming film No Time To Die. In the trailer, the actor, who has starred in the last four movies, sports grey locks. This will be the star’s final time playing the famous spy, so directors reportedly agreed it suited a more mature look explaining, “The next film is going to be the final journey of Daniel’s Bond so looking worldwearier and more mature, a little beaten up, is essential. The grey hair just adds to it.”
OVER FOR W
e didn’t see this one coming. After 22 years of marriage and two children together, Love Actually star, Colin Firth and his wife, Italian film producer, Livia Giuggioli, have announced their separation. A joint statement has been released revealing that they maintain a close friendship and will remain united in their love for their children. The announcement comes almost two years after Livia admitted to having a past affair with her alleged stalker. In March 2018 the couple’s representative addressed Livia’s prior romance with Marco Brancaccia. “A few years ago, Colin and Livia privately made the decision to separate. During that time Livia briefly became involved with former friend Mr Brancaccia. The Firths have since reunited.” So, was the stalker the cause of their split? Only time with tell.

SELENA GOMEZ –

LOUIS TOMLINSON –
SG2
According to Selena, it took four years for her to get to a good place with this album. Genrewise, the album is mostly pop, “but I definitely explored more with electric guitar, a lot of more soulful tracks underneath things, acoustic guitar, it all kind of hits different places that I feel like is my lane for music,” revealed Selena, “it’s just, like in that world and mellow.” Miss Gomez has a knack for creating gamechanging pop and we have no doubt SG2 will be the same.
Walls
Former One Direction star, Louis Tomlinson is finally releasing his debut album, Walls, this month. The 12-track album will include previous singles “Two of Us,” “Kill My Mind” and “We Made It.” The singer told his fans “I’m relieved to finally be here, thank you very much everyone for your patience, cheers!” In March last year, fans got a taste of his solo power when he released the song and video for his single “Two of Us” which was a tribute to his mother Johannah Deakin, who passed away in 2016 after a long battle with leukemia.
HALSEY –
PETSHOP BOYS –
Hotspot
Hotspot is Neil & Chris’ 14th studio length album and the follow up to 2016’s Super. It was recorded mostly in Berlin’s legendary Hansa Studios and, like the previous two albums, has been produced by Stuart Price. The band have announced that this is the last instalment of a trilogy of Priceproduced albums. “We’ve written much of our music over the last ten years in Berlin and it was an exciting experience to work on this album in the legendary Hansa studios there and add a new dimension to our sound,” they shared.
Manic
Halsey’s highly-anticipated third album, Manic, is a tribute to her true self, beneath the ‘Halsey’ stage name. “The reason this album ended up becoming what it is, which is a very, very personal conversation,” she explained. “It’s part of the reason I’ve been using a lot of Ashley talk in this album, because it does feel very much like a look behind the curtain in a way. A curtain I never intended to put up but it’s just kind of there, because I was young and scared of showing—I didn’t know who I was deeply so it was irresponsible for me to tell the whole world, ‘This is who I am!’ And the world is like, ‘You’re 21, no it’s not.’ I’m going to be 25 in a couple of days, which is terrifying because I still feel 19.”
BLACK LIPS –
Sing in a World That’s Falling Apart
Atlanta based group, Black Lips announced that their new LP, the follow-up to 2017’s ‘Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art?’ and their ninth record, will arrive on January 24th. The album sees the band at their grimiest, most dangerous and equipped with the best collection of songs in their career so far. Boasting an unapologetic southern-friend twang, the twelve-track collection marks the quintet’s strongest pull towards country to date. The album was recorded and coproduced with Nic Jodoin at Lauren Canyon’s legendary, newly opened Valentine Recording Studio (which played host to Beach Boys and Bing Crosby).

Seriously, there is nothing more cliché than setting those ridiculously unattainable ‘I'm going to lose 3 stone in a month,’ New Year's resolutions. You know, the ones that end up shattered into a million pieces by the 2nd of January when you find yourself face deep in a tub of leftover celebrations (we feel your pain). One of the main reasons why our diet resolutions fail is the unrealistic restrictions we put on ourselves to achieve them. Banishing all of your favourite foods from the cupboards, throwing yourself into the gym and stopping yourself from eating out at restaurants to avoid the temptation, is not the answer. While controlling what we eat at home and getting into that sustainable gym routine can still be a challenge, we find our biggest pitfall rears its ugly head when we are faced with the option (or sometimes the necessity) of eating out. However, dining out doesn’t have to be a mental and physical minefield of dietary doom. With the new wave of healthy restaurants popping up all over the coast it is now easier than ever to have your cake and eat it too (without feeling guilty after!) So to those of you reading this that have already come crashing down off of the ‘New Years Resolution Diet’ wagon - it’s time to reset those goals. To those of you still desperately hanging on for dear life - don’t despair, we’ve got your back. Check out our top 5 picks for healthy eating along the Costa Del Sol!

n the run up to last month’s general election, as the Brexit fires of confusion continued to rage chaotically unabated, various news sources reported an uptick in suspicious online support for the recently appointed, perpetually embattled PM. Amid yet more claims of concerted Russian interference in Western politics through social media came reminders that not every facebook account is genuine, not every instagrammer a living, breathing selfie-ing person.
As ideologically polarised posts go viral with potentially dramatic effect on public opinion, the role of sinister agents, fake accounts and automated bots in skewering their support and subsequent impact should be of genuine concern to anyone chasing the ideals of democracy. Whilst impeachment proceedings across the pond ask: “Was a despicable, lying, philandering, opportunist, racist, unfit-for-office, crazy-haired narcissist aided in his election campaign by the Russians”, the question on many a chapped British lip is slightly less dramatic - it was after all only reelection.... the rest though is verbatim.

With social media so interwoven into the fabric of society and any semblance of truth frequently jettisoned by our own leaders and their parties, it seems a pertinent time to question the validity of the influence public figures and organizations exert on us through the net. Since I’ve made it a rule not to wade too far into divisive waters, I’m going to avoid potshots at politicians (I’m sure any despicable, lying, philandering, opportunist, racist, unfit-for-office, crazy-haired narcissists not reading this will breathe a big dishonest, philandery, narcissistic sigh of relief) and approach the topic of “influencers” through the far more hard-hitting lens of people wot have fake tans and get their teeth whitened and their arses waxed and that.
experts, scientists or celebrities. For all of us scrabbling around wondering what to think, who to believe and of course what to purchase, these influencers provide a window onto the zeitgeist, an authority borne of empirical expertise, professional insight and lofty connections.... and yes, some of them just tell you the best place to get your arse waxed.
In 2013, according to Oxford Dictionaries, “selfie” became the word of the year, society’s focus turning inwards - an apparent celebration of self. Through genuine conceit, desperate deflection from skyrocketing anxiety or a simple curiosity about how long our arms were, selfies became an online currency. The poutiest, most nipped, tucked and plucked selfie stars became little WITH SOCIAL MEDIA SO INTERWOVEN more than walking, With social media tweeting canvasses rapidly ensnaring some INTO THE FABRIC OF SOCIETY AND ANY SEMBLANCE OF TRUTH for consumerism. three billion people As the masses liked (approx 40% of the FREQUENTLY JETTISONED BY OUR it up, so then did global population) it OWN LEADERS AND THEIR PARTIES, the brands, eagerly has understandably IT SEEMS A PERTINENT TIME TO gifting their wares to cultivated powerhouse QUESTION THE VALIDITY OF THE commodified bods figures, be they INFLUENCE PUBLIC FIGURES AND all too happy to sing journalists, industry ORGANIZATIONS EXERT ON US THROUGH THE NET.

their praises for mounting followers. We’ve always disproportionately cared about what make-up celebs wore, which purse they carried or restaurant they ate at, but before the arrival of the online vanity vid or pic and its accompanying hashtags, it had never been so easy for movers and shakers to kindly hook us up with their benevolent benefactors. In a matter of a few clicks and before she’s really had time to weigh up the consequences, Jenny from Grimsby can spend £600 of her student loan on a clutch bag she’s just seen Kim K flashing down Sunset Boulevard and when Jenny’s clutching it with shivering hands cos they’ve cut her gas off, Kim K will be sunnily sporting something else she was given for nothing.

IF OUR OWN ELECTED LEADERS ARE WILLING TO LIE THROUGH THEIR TEETH AND ENDORSE THINGS THEY DON’T TRULY BELIEVE IN FOR PERSONAL GAIN, IT’S PRETTY LIKELY SOME BERK OFF TOWIE WILL TOO, JUST WITH SLIGHTLY LESS DIRE CONSEQUENCES FOR HUMANITY. Neymar comprise nearly 50% fake followers. Though it’s unlikely Taylor herself hit up one of the dodgy vending sites with her credit card out, many fake followers are bots and spammers attempting to drum up clicks for their own affiliated endeavours. It’s smoke and mirrors. Mirrors made of bullshit and smoke made of more bullshit.
Such is the power of celebrity to attract others, like Primark moths to Prada lightbulbs. Not just consumers but wannabe stars, with vloggers and bloggers becoming blaggers as a means to sustain themselves and their online alter egos, the all smiling, perma-tanned, arse-waxed robots who still secretly cry in the shower and pick their noses watching Love Island, but just don’t post about it. Marbella’s teeming with pseudo-influencers, attempting to leverage exposure to their 10,000 strong fanbase for a free facial, massage or meal out. The real blag comes in the true nature of that fanbase. Like so many of us did at the dawn of Facebook, sending friend requests to anyone we’d ever shared a room’s oxygen with, a lot of these “influencers” are obsessed with the numbers, rounding up followers for the attendant perception of popularity and cultural clout among sponsors. “Organic” follower farming typically

involves following others in the hope they’ll then follow you back... which they sometimes will.... before never, ever engaging with your account ever again (We’ve all got that drawer in the kitchen with all the 5p plastic bags shoved inside). Whilst many businesses and wannabe influencers will spend their time doing this to little avail, our cutthroat culture of instant gratification offers other methods, such as “buying” online support through vendor sites, a practise officially prohibited by social media platforms intent on promoting genuine engagement. Nevertheless, businesses and public figures, including huge stars and athletes are known to have travelled these shadier paths, though usually from behind the expendable human shield of a publicist, PA or digital strategist. A recent investigation by the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance revealed that even superstar accounts such as Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and
The revelation that a large percentage of followers exist somewhere on the spectrum between completely oblivious or unengaged, paid (poorly) to feign engagement from a “click farm” in a developing country and programmed to engage, by virtue of coding, is not particularly revelatory to most, and a key reason many industry professionals view the efficacy of social media marketing with cynicism. Businesses and individuals would be wise to stay above board and concentrate on real engagement and growth through quality content, lest they lose credibility and with it long term sustainability. As one of a small number of Marbellabased publications dependent on advertising, SOCIETY would never undermine our own reputation and the faith of our clientele and readers by paying for unearned likes.... saaaay 14,000 or so in a week. Essentially that would be taking the piss. The metrics of influence have changed. Brands are not simply interested in who’s got the most followers, but the “quality” of followers in a potential ambassador’s pool – their relevance to the products or services and their ability to enhance or disseminate the messages through real life “brand communities”. Similarly, savvy consumers can spot the showponies and sellouts a mile off – we know we’re “post-truth” and there’s a game to be played. If our own elected leaders are willing to lie through their teeth and endorse things they don’t truly believe in for personal gain, it’s pretty likely some berk off TOWIE will too, just with slightly less dire consequences for humanity. LEARNING TO TRADE with the eXperts
Hi James, I believe you are currently the youngest member at Traders Club International? Yes, that’s right. I just finished high school! What made you want to join TCI? I have always had an interest in the financial markets as my dad was a trader. A friend of mine saw that the office had recently opened in Nueva Andalucía and told me about it. I thought it would be a great way to get experience before going to university, so that ultimately I can either trade for myself or find it easier to get a job in the financial markets.
At Traders Club International we pride ourselves on the experience of our trading experts and their ability to teach newcomers the world of trading. In this issue we speak with another member, James Goldsztajn, to hear his story and learn all about his experience at Traders Club International.
36
So, what did your mum say when you told her you were signing up to TCI? She thought it was a great idea actually, as I have been spending quite a bit of time over the summer travelling. She has been really supportive as it gives me a sense of discipline to go into the office each day. For myself as well, I like the fact that every day is different in the markets which makes it exciting and not a grind.
How does your average day look? First thing in the morning kicks off with a hot chocolate. Haha, I know it sounds weird but I don’t drink coffee. We talk about the things that have happened in the news and how they might affect the financial markets. I then look at the main products I have been following and potential trade set ups for the day. During the day I have my alerts on to let me know when to trade, alongside watching educational tutorials online, reading financial books and bouncing ideas off the TCI traders. What products are you focusing on at the moment? I like to watch the German index, the DAX and Gold as they are pretty volatile and provide good
TRADING IS VERY MUCH ABOUT PSYCHOLOGY AND THAT IT’S ALL ABOUT HAVING THE RIGHT RISK REWARD RATIO. opportunities for trading. The guys in the office have been really helpful with interpreting how the fundamental news headlines have had an impact on the markets and how to profit from them. Can you give us any other tips you have learnt from your time with TCI so far? I am learning that trading is very much about psychology and that it’s all about having the right risk reward ratio. For example, I can be right less than 50% of the time and still make money by having a risk to reward ratio of 1 to 3. So in EUR terms I would lose 100 EUR twice in a row but then on a winner look to take 300 EUR. What do you like about the TCI office? It’s very international. Traders are from more than five different countries, so it’s a great atmosphere exchanging ideas, not to mention sharing a joke or two. As there is a lot of experience
in the room, I’m always learning something new about the markets. Any final words? If anyone out there thinks this is something for them, I would recommend to go for it! …and have some fun while doing it! Good luck James we wish you all the best!

THE TECH SCENE
Numerous startups are now taking this to a whole new level as we have begun to see products and software being developed that blur the lines between computers and human biology. Many of these startups are going straight to the information source by targeting the brain. We are well and truly in the information age. Never before has it been easier to find, share and sell information. Numerous startups are now taking this to a whole new level as we have begun to see products and software being developed that blur the lines between computers and human biology. Many of these startups are going straight to the information source by targeting the brain. Neurotechnology involves implantable devices, neuro-prosthetics, and brain-machine
interfaces to stimulate and monitor activity. These devices are intended to augment the nervous system activity and expand our capabilities. The possibilities of using tech to make us super intelligent, perform better, or even to cure some neuro degenerate diseases, are no longer just a vision, it’s becoming a reality. Even Facebook has announced plans to create brain-machine interfaces that allow users to type using their thoughts!
Here’s a glimpse into the most cutting-edge ways that technology could be intertwined with our brain in 2020...

THE TECH SCENE
If you find it hard to fall asleep, or have good quality of sleep due to stress, Thync has developed a small, wearable ‘pod’ called the Thync Relax Pro, that attaches to the back of the neck and uses low levels of electrical pulses to stimulate nerve pathways linked to sleep. According to the company, these pathways communicate with areas of the brain to help control stress levels and sleep quality. The user can also raise or lower the electrical pulses depending on their level of stress or deep sleep required.
with brain-machine interfaces to help patients with disabilities, such as blindness, better navigate and interact with the world around them.
For increased strength, endurance and muscle memory, Halo Neuroscience, based in San Francisco, has developed a brain-stimulating device called the Halo Sport. The device sends weak electrical pulses into the user’s brain with the aim of enhancing the effects of physical training. The product is based on the concept of neuropriming, which using electrical stimulation to increase plasticity in the brain prior to an activity.
BrainCo, a product of the Harvard Innovation Lab, specializes in neurotech wearables. The company’s main product line is the ‘Focus’ series, which offers wearable headbands for education, fitness, and mindcontrolled games. Other companies such as Neurable, are targeting the AR/VR gaming industry by developing brain-computer interfaces that allow people to control software and devices using only their brain activity. French neurotech startup NextMind has also built a small, head mounted sensor which uses deep neural networks and neural signals from the brain to transform your intention into movements in the Unity 3D game.
A startup called Synchron is developing an implantable device, ‘the Stentrode’, that aims to provide a safe way for paralyzed patients to achieve direct brain control of mobility-assistive devices. The Stentrode is a small and flexible device that can pass through cerebral blood vessels, allowing it to implant in the brain and interpret electrical data emitted by neurons. The company has been preparing for early-stage clinical trials to evaluate the safety and feasibility of the device. Then we have companies like Paradromics, who have been developing neuroprosthetics
Electric, solar and space pioneer Elon Musk, has now created Neuralink, an innovative company working on building brain implants to link human minds to computers. The company has hired a diverse team of engineers ranging from brain-machine interface experts, and leading neurosurgeon and electrical engineering PhD Ben Rapoport. While information regarding their specific
approach is still fairly limited, it’s understood that the company’s goal is to make AI an extension of the human brain - essentially creating a symbiotic human-AI relationship. During an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast in September 2018, Musk claimed that the tech would “enable anyone who wants to have superhuman cognition.”
When you mention neuromarketing, it’s usually met with worry about being unconsciously forced to buy something because of this technology. Luckily, it’s nothing like this at all. Neuromarketing is mainly about consensual research to provide insights into the real motivations of consumers. For example, Bitbrain Technologies use brain scanners to test consumers’ reactions to a certain brand. In traditional market research, participants give their conscious opinions and preferences. Neuromarketing, however, aims to capture the unconscious reaction: a deeper, hidden judgement which guides shopping decisions.
Neuros Medical is a biomodulation company with a primary focus on pain relief. Its Electrical Nerve Block technology aims to help patients suffering from chronic pain manage their symptoms more effectively. The technology works by interfering with high-frequency electrical signals transmitted by the brain to the nervous system. The company claims that this can reduce the severity of pain associated with various medical conditions including post-amputation pain, chronic post-surgical pain, and chronic migraine.

With all of the recent research on the gut coming to light over the last few years, you likely now know that the status of your gut microbiome is integral to overall health.
ith more than 500 species of bacteria living in or on the human body at all times, bacterial cells outnumber our own cells significantly. The bacteria that reside in the digestive system affect the body (and brain!) in seemingly countless ways. They enhance the effects of vitamins, help to regulate our immune system, and control our brain function, metabolism and levels of various neurotransmitters like serotonin, which significantly impacts mental health.
cells and can physically bore a hole into your intestinal wall. This can lead to leaky gut, which is when toxins, partially digested food and dangerous bacteria slip through the intestinal wall and penetrate the tissue and bloodstream beneath it. This can cause a slew of issues like widespread inflammation, obesity, skin problems and more. An overgrowth of bad bacteria can also lead to disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, SIBO, depression, chronic inflammation, and even cancer.
With so much on the line with gut health, it is no wonder that people are getting serious about maintaining it. Probiotic supplement sales are constantly rising, with global sales expected to reach $17.4 billion by 2027. And westerners are more obsessed with fermented (aka high good bacteria) foods than ever before, now that we know what incredible benefits they provide for the gut microbiota. But what many people do not yet realize is that preventative measures must also be taken to ensure that our gut is in optimal health. One of the effective measures to implement as soon as possible is limiting sugar intake.
It is important to make the distinction between naturally occurring sugar in foods like fruit and added sugar. Naturally occurring sugars are typically fine. When I say be mindful of how much sugar you are consuming, I am talking about the ladder. However, I am not only referring to the white sugar that you may be adding to your morning cup of coffee (which I recommend nixing!).
Sugar wreaks havoc on the digestive system. It feeds the growth of damaging organisms like yeast, candida and bad bacteria, which can seriously harm the gut. Bad bacteria produce toxins, called exotoxins, that damage healthy
There is added sugar hidden in many of the food items we eat on a daily basis, and we do not even realize it! That is because many companies are aware of the negative effects of sugar, so they use other forms of it in order to prevent us from recognizing the ingredient names when we see them. A good rule of thumb for keeping track of your sugar intake is to always read the ingredients on the back of any food or beverage label that you are considering buying.
Any ingredient that ends is “ose” can be assumed to be a sugar. Below is a list of other names for added sugar: • Anhydrous dextrose • Brown sugar • Confectioner’s powdered sugar • Corn syrup • Corn syrup solids • Dextrose • Fructose
44 44
• High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) • Invert sugar • Lactose • Malt syrup • Maltose • Molasses • Nectars (for example, peach or pear nectar)
• Pancake syrup • Raw sugar • Sucrose • Sugar • White granulated sugar
It is ideal to limit your intake of added sugar to no more than 25 grams per day. To put that into perspective, the average added sugar intake per person in the US is currently around 77 grams per day. If you do want to add a hint of sweetness to your afternoon tea or need a healthy sugar alternative for something you are baking, I recommend going with a natural sweetener that does not spike blood glucose levels or provide an easy source of food for bad intestinal bacteria to feed on. The healthiest sweeteners are pure stevia leaf extract, monk fruit (sometimes called luo han guo), and lucuma. While sugar may feed the damaging bacteria in the intestinal tract, these three natural sweeteners possess antimicrobial compounds that may actually help to inhibit bad bacteria like candida and maintain bacterial balance. Be sure that you are only buying pure stevia – if it says anything different or just ‘stevia,’ there may be unnecessary additives or it may be highly processed, which negates all of its benefits. In terms of monk fruit sweetener, I absolutely love the brand Lakanto – I use it in my own cooking constantly and in my cleanses regularly.

PARENTING
THE BENEFITS OF TEACHING YOUR CHILD MULTIPLE LANGUAGES
Speaking multiple languages is like any other skill; you need to practice it a lot. There is no better way to learn languages than to start at an early age and parents should not be afraid to raise their children in a multilingual environment. Caroline Wendelin: International artist of SwedishFinnish and German roots, raised in Spain and completely in love with art and nature. After travelling the world for several years, working in the modeling industry, she has now settled as a full-time artist in her studio in Marbella. www.carolinewendelin.com art@carolinewendelin.com
When I was about 10 years old, I was often asked how such a ‘young girl’ could speak four languages. Many wondered how my parents did it, but before explaining the “technical” part, let me tell you about the perks of being a multilingual child: Benefits of being a multilingual child: l The ability to communicate with extended family and more people in general l Open-mindedness and acceptance of other cultures l Future job opportunities l It is easier to acquire even more languages later on in life l An increased ability to focus l A more developed neuroplasticity l Delayed onset of Alzheimer’s disease in comparison to monolinguals One fact that parents need to understand is that learning another language will NOT cause speech or language problems. Children all over the world learn more than one language from birth and develop language skills just as other children do, with just a few differences: l Most bilingual children speak their first words later than monolinguals. However, by age 2, most children can use two-word phrases, like “my toy” or “more juice” and it can be in one or both languages. Although in the beginning the child will be a bit “behind” their peers in terms of vocabulary, it has been proven that after the age of 14 they will surpass the skills of their peers in ALL their languages.
l From time to time, children might mix grammar rules. They may use words from both languages in the same sentence. This is a normal part of becoming bilingual and will go away with time. l Some children may have a “silent period” in one of the languages that can last for several months. Again, this is normal and will go away after some time. It is nothing to worry about.
PARENTING
There are two strategies that are the best for raising multilingual children. l The first is where you speak one language at home and the other language is learned at school and with friends. This way your child will have a good chance at becoming bilingual. l The other theory is called OPOL and means One Parent One Language. For example, based on my personal experience, my mum spoke Swedish to me and my dad, German. In this case, the child is required to only communicate in Swedish with mum and only German with dad. When all three are together, they all speak the common language. This way, the child can learn 2 languages at home plus a third language at school, so they have a greater chance of being fluent in 3 languages (or even 4 languages if the school is bilingual too!)
You have to stick to your choice and insist on speaking the language with your child. Some parents might back-out or lose hope when they notice that their child answers in a different language than they’re being spoken to in, but it’s just a matter of time before they will start speaking multiple languages. It requires patience. In my personal experience, when I started speaking it was in Swedish with my mother, German with my father, and Spanish at school. However, I did have a time where I only answered in German (a silent period of Swedish). During that time, my mother
thought I would never learn Swedish, but she didn’t lose hope and kept talking to me in Swedish nevertheless (people would look at us confused as our conversations were in different languages). And thanks to her consistency, one day I started replying in Swedish too. It is simply amazing how children can absorb information like a sponge (much more than we think they can!). Reading books, listening to music and watching videos in different languages are some methods that can help parents in this exciting, yet sometimes arduous, process.

NEW Year’s RE-Solutio ns This year, when it comes to parenting choices, let’s see if our resolutions can focus on things we have tried and perhaps failed at but can rise up and give another go; that in itself is a great example for the kids! Failure isn’t a fault, or a lack, it is a necessity in order to continue to succeed.
T
hese are things you may have tried but can try and try again - lets not give up on patience, setting examples, goals and showing them the reasons behind our ideals. Recognise they don’t have to agree with us, just that we are trying to show them and educate them to be respectful, loving, giving humans who care for humanity and what it means. According to Psychology Today, and therapist and psychologist Barton Goldsmith PhD, there are ten important steps to effective parenting, so let’s give them a whirl shall we?
Locate their strengths Knowing where your child’s strengths lie means that you develop a better understanding of who they are and can then build their confidence in other areas where they lack that strength. Once they know that you fully support and understand them you can help to encourage their self-esteem in other areas where they have more difficulty. When they feel confident in one area that has been noticed they’ll feel more capable to work on those they aren’t.
Praise and reward Punishment is not always the most effective method to teach a lesson to your kids, instead of pointing out weaknesses in something they’re not good at, we can flip
48
that and try to encourage improvement in something they are more capable of. And when that improvement occurs a reward will serve to encourage further positive outcomes.
Avoid negative emotio nal reactio ns Don’t let your own stress out on the children, take a moment to decide how you are going to react to any situation where you feel like you might respond with a negative attitude. Anger doesn’t work, sarcasm doesn’t work and putting your child down doesn’t work. If we need to enforce a strong word we can work out other ways to get this message across with patience and calm messages.
PARENTING
Do n’t co mpare yo ur children to others or each other Your children are individuals who are unique and being compared to someone else whether it be a sibling, friend or acquaintance can be detrimental. It can cause rivalry and also a lack of confidence or other psychological problems. We are all created equally and should be loved equally.
Ask for help You might not need it, or you might not realise you need it but letting things go too far, being overtired, stressed and alone can cause more serious problems than your own. Kids need a lot of attention and care and sometimes you may find yourself feeling like you have no idea what you are doing. If this occurs don’t be afraid to seek out help and advice. There are trained professionals out there that may well have the answers you need, and you may find that talking to someone objective might be the key to unlocking your difficulties and help you to enjoy the parenting process once more.
Keep smiling Don’t give up. Keep up the positive attitude and maintain a sense of humour in your parenting life. Keep life light and your children will follow.
Be positive ry to offer your family a positive vibe by keeping the home a happy place. Negative energy can create negative energy and overspills into a child’s natural rhythm if it becomes a regular occurrence. In accordance with this, try to ensure that your communication and attention to your child is broached in a positive way.
Be at o ne with change Life with kids takes some getting used to. Gone are the days of lieins and sitting quietly reading the newspaper whenever you feel like it, you may start to feel like you’re last on the list of priorities, the only way to manage this is to realise that it is all good. Change is good, and carving out time for yourself and your relationship becomes all the more special and necessary.
Lead by example Using the line “do as I say, not as I do” isn’t exactly the best method of getting your children to follow you. If you show them how you expect them to behave, it is far simpler. If they can mimic you (and they will) and that brings positive actions…you’re on to a winner. Whether we like it or not, if we behave badly that will imprint in them and they may well assume the same act. Keep your cool, think things through and always take a moment to breathe in between while you do so.

f you know the art world you will know Katz is switching it up showing artists of all levels of notoriety and helping to promote their work and push it out globally. Katz was the world’s youngest Salvador Dali dealer at 30 years old and has access to over 70 artists including Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Takahi Murakami and Jeff Koons. Over 60 artists and creatives from around the world were invited to exhibit at The Art Plug; a mixing pot of mediums, styles and cultures. Guests were invited to ignite their senses and delve into year two of the event. In addition to the showcase of artists, an art charity auction took place and live extreme sports performances from Red Bull athletes as well as a series of artist led panels and talks. In addition, Katz held a panel discussion about the impact of social media on the art work and how these platforms help to discover and consume. With over one million followers and counting, and the network within his agency at ten million plus, this man knows what he is talking about. SOCIETY MARBELLA managed to pin down the talented FJ Baur to learn a little more about the man behind the art and what he loves about Marbella.
Marcel-Katz by Nicholas-Green
“Art means everything to me.”
SM: Tell us a little bit about your background. When and how did you fall in love with art? FJ: I am a small-town guy, I grew up in the south of Germany. I wanted to escape, so I started to move around and travelled a lot. Now I call Berlin, Vienna and Marbella my home.
Berlin has changed a lot over the last few years, when I first visited over 10 years ago I loved the way everything felt easy and creative - no boundaries, no money, no worries... Today I go once a month to see friends and relatives but not for work. Vienna took over from Berlin when I visited it for the first time, it is much smaller, but free in a very special way and so traditional – I love it.

Marbella is the place I have spent most of my time over the last 2 years, it is a very unique location. This is home, where my garage means everything to me – the place to channel my creativity and where most of my Art Plug pieces were created. Art means everything to me. A friend once said to me ‘There is no way back to a 9 to 5 job.’ Today, I totally agree, I am a lifetime artist.
“I love the idea of keeping things alive and letting them have another circle of life, again and again.” SM: What materials do you prefer to work with? How do you select your materials? FJ: As an artist, I live in decades. The last two years, I have loved to play and work with fabrics. Fabric is so intense and is a part of our lives from the beginning to the end - romper to the death shirt. We all know this material, and nothing layers or comes closer to our body. So, everyone understands what it feels like. Most of the fabrics I use are vintage or knitted by myself. It reminds me of my childhood as my grandmother taught me to knit.

I love the idea of keeping things alive and letting them have another circle of life, again and again. SM: Who or what are your main inspirations? Artistic and philosophically… Who are your favourite artists? FJ: Life! We are influenced every day by our encounters and experiences. This is reflected in my work. I perceive many emotions every day. I pick up things like a sponge. In my work, I try to process everything. At the end of the day, I want to be like a piece of white paper again. Off for new. There are some artists that move me a lot. Robert Mapplethopre for the shapes in his photography and Jeff Koons for his simple yet ingenious works of art. SM: How has your practice changed over time? FJ: Time is the element that changes everything, and good things need time. Today, I am confident. I do not question my work.
SM: Tell us about your creative process. Which part do you enjoy the most? Which one could you do without? FJ Baur: Creativity is more of a feeling, comparable to a dream. Once you have an idea or a vision no one can stop you and everything around you disappears. What I like most, is to listen to bad music (as my friends say) in isolation, to channel the workflow, but of course I also love to work in teams. Together with my dear friend Thomas Kirchgrabner, (an Austrian fashion designer), we created a masterpiece, a dress covered with hundreds of little details, inspired from my cloud series from 2017/2018 and did a cover page shoot, for the most important fashion magazine in Austria. A no-go and creativity killer for me are breaks – luckily, I am able to concentrate hour after hour. SM: How would you define your style? FJ: The style is very much Pop art. I love to work between genres; art & design and fashion. “MORE SM: Which colours are IS you feeling for 2020?
MORE”
FJ: My artworks have a very simple colour scheme, more is more – same with my style of clothing. I personally love pink. I am still feeling a Marbella summer vibe but I would say that the beach and the city provide me with different colour schemes. Marbella, for me is super colourful – pink, yellow, green. Vienna, for me is kind of urban, white and black. SM: What jobs have you done other than being an artist? FJ: As I grew up in a very traditional small town, my parents wanted me to get a “proper” job, so I trained to become a chef. This is funny as everyone who knows me, knows my cooking is very, very – let’s say, SIMPLE. In the same company I did my chef training, I later worked as an Event Planner – those years gifted me with a lot of discipline and power. This is very helpful today, as most of my artist friends are very chaotic and lost from time to time. SM: What’s your dream project? FJ: Working together with Björk, on any kind of project. He is my all over muse.
SM: To date, what do you feel has been the greatest point or achievement in your career? FJ: Every project feels like a new challenge but having the ability to decide freely what to do or work on, is for myself, my main achievement. SM: Are you planning on exhibiting something in Marbella in the near future?
“Once you have an idea or a vision no one can stop you and everything around you disappears.”
FJ: I am returning to Marbella in February. Coming home, to the “garage” with a load of plans for 2020, an exhibition in Summer 2020 is one – in a special setting – and a big bang opening. SM: What made you fall in love to Marbella and decide to move here? and has that changed? FJ: The reason you fall in love with a place, are friends. Childhood friends showed me their hideaway haven up in the hills of Istan. For me it didn’t need a second visit to fall deeply in love. What I love most about Marbella is meeting
new people every day, no matter what nationality. The amazing Andalusian culture mixed up with so many different sub-cultures makes Marbella a very special place with its own energy and great history. Home is, where the heart is. SM: So, where would we find you if we wanted to get a drink and chat art with you? :)
FJ: I have a handful of go-to places, but I love Breathe, Monkey Club and the Marbella Beach Club. As I am not good at cooking, you’ll see me at one of these places at least once a day. SM: Finally, which art piece are you most proud of? and why? FJ: As an artist I don’t need to feel proud of anything. As a businessman I am very proud that I was invited by Marcel Katz to show my works at The Art Plug. fjbaur.net fjbaur theartplugpowerhouse.com

of my favorite brands, and through their images share with you some tips that may help you when choosing your next piece of furniture, or perhaps give you some ideas for your next home styling. I’d like to also introduce you to an up and coming artist, whom I have the pleasure to represent here in Marbella.
Welcome to the world of Baxter…
Heidi Gubbins is a Marbellabased interior designer with an array of projects under her belt. Heidi has transformed spaces for private clients and collaborated with design firms and architects on numerous projects.
I love Baxter because it is not just a brand, it is an experience. It is one of my favourite houses of furniture because it captures a vibe I’m particularly fond of… mood! In their words: “...the mood, the way of feeling is meaningful and in the collections it is explored through the mixing and matching: a never-predictable blend of materials, colours, textures and writings. At the heart of everything, there’s the freedom of the creative process, the ability to generate, through ingenious combinations, timeless ideas that are born from a never-ending research that, thanks to the variety and the customisation, anticipates trends and supports also different tastes.”
Her stylish approach, focus, attention to detail and sensitivity to her clients’ wishes attract clients from Spain, Europe and the USA. Each month, Heidi will offer design advice and spotlight some of her favourite and novelty items.

Using a remarkable piece like this will create a focal point and jazz up an empty wall or corner. Another unique piece is Ninfea

I like the Jupiter dining table because of its shape from top to base, and the variations of materials… The matt varnish honeycomb-core top covered with alpacca, in antiqued copper or antiqued brass, is supported by a curved popular cylindrical-shaped leg, finished with Terra Cruda concrete, hand-paddled by master craftsmen. The joy of the Jupiter table is that you can also choose the base in stone variations such as Ocean Storm marble, Hidro Rosso Lepanto marble; Patagonia granite; Geode quartzite, Rocky Mountain quartzite and Hidro Brioche onyx.
Choosing an unusual shape for a dining or coffee table, will add unequivocal style and an unexpected story.
The stunning Leon sofa caught my eye on my trip to Milan this year, as it reminded me of an oversized chaise-longue, bringing about a feeling of luxurious ease.
Don’t be afraid to use various types of seating in a room, it will give the space a unique sense of composition and a curated touch. Ischia Turquoise colour enameled lava stone. Lava stone is extracted on the slopes of Etna volcano, “occhio di Pernice” finish, porous and perforated, with water-repellent oil protection. The Etnean basalt is a tough material and shows a dark and uniform colour, whose origin is connected to the cooling process of lava flows.

Another great piece I found was Piaf. It is a modular collection that because of its shape naturally brings people together.
Try this shape when you want to create a friendly and intimate environment.

So belle, Libelle…
Using some accent tones on drawers and door fronts will break the monotony with a touch of fun.
I found this piece really beautiful because of its adaptability and the way in which the accessories are combined with the structure and all the fine finishes and materials that one can choose from. It can also be wall or ceiling mount, which makes it a great option when you want to divide a large space.
Using shelving to divide a large room is a great way to create different atmospheres and use of space. It can also tease our curiosity making the space feel more interesting and intriguing.
Parsec If you’re looking for a great home office desk, that is practical and stylish, try Parsec. In this photo it is in finishes of Kashmir Vin & River Congo.
Rustic pottery on an elegant piece is a clever way to add distinctive character.
baxter.it I really hope you’ve enjoyed what I’ve shared with you and I look forward to your notes and feedback! Wishing you all a phenomenal January and start to the year. If you’d like to know more about any of the pieces mentioned and for more information on what we do, please let us know and we will be happy to assist.

MIKOLAJ
KRAWCZUNAS When I met Mikolaj I was immediately drawn to his work and passion for art. His eye for capturing natural beauty and educated technique for composition makes him a professional with a great future ahead, thanks to his ability to consistently mature in his field.
Mikolaj was born in Poland, he studied photography in film school, and is always fascinated by a good frame and the story behind it. He started travelling at 23 years old, moving across the globe, from Asia Pacific to Europe, working as a commercial photographer capturing architecture and luxurious locations. Always looking for new experiences and thanks to his curiosity of people, Mikolaj decided to launch his limited edition collection in adoration of women and their beauty.
His works are printed only on 100% cotton museum quality paper, which assures the colours and blacks will not fade for at least 100 years. His works also come with a certificate and guarantee. Mikolaj is currently working on new projects, which will go live in the upcoming months, and he aims to introduce them in art galleries around the globe. I have the real pleasure of exclusively representing his work here on the Costa del Sol so I’m looking forward to what’s coming next and his new creations.

Fast forward nearly four decades to 2013 and the 300hp VW Golf R 4Motion and 340hp five-cylinder Audi RS3 quattro were the fastest hot hatches on the planet until Mercedes-AMG dropped a bombshell with the 360hp A45 AMG. Not only did the A45 AMG have more power it also had a superior chassis, and soon spawned saloon, estate and crossover variants to complete Mercedes dominance with a more comprehensive model offer. In the process the compact high performance range also helped the Mercedes sporting sub-brand massively increase its worldwide sales, more than doubling market share in North America, Scandinavia, Austria and Switzerland where 4WD is a distinct advantage in winter. Launched last year, the mainstream variants of the second generation A-Class hatch (W177) and

CLA-Class (W178) saloon have been flying out of the showrooms, their AMG variants eagerly anticipated. The outgoing M133 engine debuted with 360hp in 2013, and was ramped up to 381hp at facelift time. On paper the turbocharged fourcylinder motor at the heart of these latest cars appears very similar with exactly the same 1,991cc displacement, from an under-square 83.0 x 92.0 bore x stroke. But when you place them side-by-side they are very different. Open the bonnet of the new AMG compact cars and those familiar with the previous model will immediately notice the major mechanical differences. Where your eyes used to be
drawn towards the huge turbocharger in front of the transversely mounted fourcylinder M133 motor, the slightly larger new turbocharger now sits at the back of the new engine as does the exhaust manifold and its piping.
“The primary reason for moving the turbocharger to the rear was to aid the lower bonnet line that gives this second-generation model line its sleeker looks and superior aerodynamics,” explained Natascha Bausewein, Lead Engineer for the M139 engine project. “Another positive point is that the exhaust no longer has to be routed under the engine to draw spent gases rearwards,” she said. With a larger Borg Warner twin-scroll roller bearing turbocharger, which is basically one of the units from the AMG GT4, which features a 57mm diameter turbine wheel, the M139 motor weighs 160kg, which is around 10kg more thanks to the larger turbocharger and new items like the gasoline particulate filter. As before the engine block is a closed deck design for strength. The pistons use the same low friction Nanoslide F1-derived coating and the combustion chambers have a similar part bowl-in piston design. The exhaust camshaft features Camtronic variable valve timing,
and as before the Direct Injection operates at 200-bar pressure with Piezo nozzles that can fire up to five accurate pulses per combustion stroke. Conventional magnetically activated injectors add extra fuel during full throttle operation, and peak cylinder combustion pressure is up by 10 bar to 160 bar. Heat management is critical in modern engines because of increasingly stricter emissions standards. Fast warm up with near instant catalytic converter light off is required, and this is aided by a cooling system utilising a crank driven mechanical water pump for the cylinder head and an electrically driven one for the crankcase. This system allows the head to stay cool for efficient combustion, while a warmer crankcase makes for lower internal fiction. With a compression ratio upped from 8.6:1 to 9.0:1 and a 2.1 bar boost pressure the base version of the all-new M139 motor produces 387hp at 6,500rpm with 480Nm of torque from 4,750-5,000rpm on 1.9 bar of boost.
The S version makes a sensational 421hp at 6,750rpm with 500Nm of torque from 5,000-5,250rpm with 2.1 bar boost (M139 1.8 bar for base and S variants), achieved with a different ECU map as well as a larger, two-stage intercooler that works in conjunction with the low temperature circuit of the airconditioning. Think about that 421hp number for a moment, because this is almost four times the output of the first generation Golf GTI and Escort XR3i! Another significant number is the specific output of 211hp/litre, which exceeds that of most current supercars. And finally, where the old motor ran into its limiter at 6,700rpm the M139 now soars to a higher 7,200rpm electronic cap. This higher rev limit really helps on track or when you are charging a tight, twisty road in the lower ratios of the eight-speed AMG Speedshift 8G double-clutch paddle-shift transmission. Thanks to the unerring grip of their 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system all that output can be turned into a scorching 3.9 sec 0-100km/ time in the case of the A45 S, and 4.0 sec for the slightly heavier CLA45 S. The base models are 0.1 sec slower respectively. Top speed for all models is electronically limited to 250km/h, or 270km/h for S models with the AMG Driver’s Package.

Today, we are at the Jarama Circuit near Madrid, Spain ready to put the second generation A45 AMG and CLA45 AMG models through their paces on both road and track. Both models feature the AMG Dynamic Select driving mode controller that offers a ‘Basic’ map that looks after ‘Slippery’ and ‘Comfort’ programmes. ‘Advanced’ looks after the ‘Sport’ mode while ‘Pro’ is mapped for the Sport+ mode. Finally, ‘Master’ is linked to the ‘Race’ mode that is standard on the ‘S’ version and part of the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package on the base models. All these are accessed through the Dynamic Select button on the console
90 90
and via the AMG menu on the MBUX infotainment screen. One small point that might go relatively un-noticed but makes a marginal difference to the way the A45 and CLA45 grip and handle in extremis is a function of their styling. “While the standard tyre size of both models is 245/40ZR18, with the 19inch wheel and tyre option the CLA’s slightly wider wheel arches allowed us to squeeze in 255/35ZR19 tyre, which have a slightly larger tread contact patch than the 245/35ZR19s on the A45,” explained Driving Dynamics engineer, Rene Szczepek.
TORQUE TALK
On public roads you don’t notice the slight difference in turn-in or grip levels, but on the race track the CLA 45 I drove first seemed to have a fraction more bite at the front end when turning in and s smidgen more poise in a four-wheel-drift on the limit, even if it was near impossible to split absolute mechanical grip by the seat of one’s pants. That said I have to qualify this comment by laying out a couple of other observations. Firstly, all the cars were on standard street rubber and not trackday Cup tyres. Therefore in the 30+ degree C heat they began to wilt after a few laps, resulting in gradually increasing understeer and handling looseness. Secondly, because the track only cars had done many laps in the hands of drivers with varying styles and differing abilities, tyre wear across the fleet was not even. With this in mind the CLA 45 I drove first seemed well bolted down and handled well, with a nice light to medium weighted feel through the typical thick rimmed, flat bottom AMG steering wheel. As I encountered significant understeer with the first A45 at Jarama just as I had on the original A45 launch at Bilster Berg in 2013 I knew to ask for another car.
As expected this was noticeably better, handling more like the CLA45 with crisper turn-in and a more neutral balance. This tyre wear pattern is a factor that means impressions gleaned on the day are not 100% definitive, and the only way to reliably compare apples with apples is to use two cars with fresh rubber and optimum tyre pressures. All else being equal the key to getting a clean turn-in to a bend is not being over ambitious with entry speeds. Get that right and in Sport, Sport+ and Track modes the new AMG Torque Control differential keenly shunts more power to the rear wheels, rebalancing the fundamental layout of front wheel drive with hung on all-wheel-drive. Throttling up smoothly past the apex you get a pleasant feeling of power on slip at the rear wheels that you can play with to modify your exit line or just have a ball of fun with a smidgen of power on oversteer. And as with the E63 AMG and GT4 Coupe there is also a Drift mode where you can play hoonigan and light up the rubber when the mood takes you.

TORQUE TALK
Like all hung-on 4WD systems these AMG models run in predominantly FWD mode until the sensors detect the needs to send some torque aft. AMG swear that the transition is seamless, but there were a couple of instances where I could feel the front wheels scrabbling for a fraction of a second before the clutches closed and shunted the power to the rear wheels.

Last year I detected the same phenomenon while testing the new Audi A6 40 TDI quattro, which has Audi’s ultra technology on demand 4WD system, so I don’t totally believe the hype surrounding such systems. In both cases I found the system can be felt engaging if you invoke sudden weight transfer with a big throttle opening combined with an uphill gradient or a loose surface like sand. I used to grit my teeth at the harsh ride of the A45 AMG, much preferring the longer travel suspension and taller tyres on the GLA45 AMG, which despite its elevated ride height is a mere 1.0 sec slower around the Nürburgring.
The new A45 and CLA45 have a much more comfort-biased spring and damper set-up in Comfort and Sport modes, making them feel more rounded and grown up with no less tenacity when you drop the hammer on a twisty road. The A45 in particular now feels less of a boy racer special, even if the optional track package aero spoiler kit is just as visually extrovert as before. In terms of soundtrack, no four-cylinder is ever going to raise the hairs on the back of your neck in the way that a good five or six does. That said while the M139 motor sounds smoother and less flat than its predecessor, musicality continues to evade its resume and it remains an effective rather than an inspirational tool.

TORQUE TALK
High torsional stiffness of the body-in-white is a pre-requisite for a good handling car and is something AMG understands very well. Thus another change enthusiasts will notice under the bonnet of the new cars is the three-piece alloy strut brace bridging the suspension towers. If you were to put the car on a ramp you would also notice the alloy undertray bolted under the engine bay. Apart from helping to close the ‘box’, making the front structure of car torsionally stiffer, this panel also contributes to aerodynamics by smoothing the airflow under the front of the car. Metal fillets reinforce the front longitudinal members just in front of the A-pillars, while at the rear
underbody struts increase torsional rigidity in local areas. As a comment on the increased quality of the second generation compact Mercedes in general it has not gone un-noticed that a pair of hydraulic struts now hold up the bonnet. The low rent manual strut used before had no place on a car costing as much as the original A45 AMG and its siblings!

GHOST GEAR Pollution of the world’s oceans is a growing and pervasive problem, and that is especially true of the increasing volume of ocean plastic. A staggering 12 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean every year, the equivalent of emptying a rubbish truck into the ocean every minute. All plastic in the oceans can trap, entangle, smother or kill animals. However there is one particular type of plastic pollution that is especially deadly because it is specifically designed to catch and kill marine wildlife:
A B A N D O N E D, L O S T O R DISCARDED FISHING GEAR, OR SO-CALLED ‘GHOST GEAR’. Over the past few decades, the fishing industry worldwide has increasingly used plastic in ropes, nets and lines, as well as other fishing equipment. Plastic’s lightness, buoyancy, durability and cheapness make it ideal for fishing. Unfortunately, the same qualities also make ghost nets and lines a fatal and growing threat to marine life, and the communities that depend on healthy oceans thriving with life. Fishing gear can be lost by accident or abandoned at sea deliberately. Once there, nets and lines can pose a threat to wildlife for years or decades, ensnaring everything from small fish and crustaceans to endangered turtles, seabirds and even whales. Spreading throughout the ocean on tides and currents, lost and discarded fishing gear is now drifting to Arctic coastlines, washing up on remote Pacific Islands, entangled on coral reefs and littering the deep sea floor.

Photo: Ghosts Fishing Nets in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch - Greenpeace
A new Greenpeace report reveals the deadly impact of GHOST GEAR An estimated 640,000 tonnes of abandoned or lost fishing equipment, or ‘ghost gear’, enter the ocean every year, equivalent in weight to more than 50 thousand double-decker buses. In total, they make up around 10% of the plastic waste in our oceans, entangling and killing marine life, warns a new Greenpeace Germany report, Ghost gear: the abandoned fishing nets haunting our oceans. The report comes as Greenpeace ship, Arctic Sunrise is surveying Mount Vema, a biodiverse seamount in the Atlantic, 1,000 kilometers off the coast of South Africa, where the remains of the once active fishing industry can still be found. Speaking from the expedition at Mount Vema, Thilo Maack, of Greenpeace’s Protect the Oceans campaign, said: “Long after its initial use, this fishing gear goes on killing and maiming marine life, and polluting even remote ecosystems like the Mount Vema seamount. We have seen an amazing underwater world full of life and colours here. It’s utterly grim to see the legacy of
destructive fishing in such a remote location like this.
fished due to the range of wildlife living around them.
“Even the Tristan Lobster, an iconic species of Mount Vema, that was fished to the brink of extinction twice is now showing signs of population recovery, thanks to a ban on bottom fishing being implemented here. This shows how oceans have an amazing ability to regenerate. But to properly recover and thrive into the future, Mount Vema and its unique ecosystem need to be completely off-limits to harmful human activities. The current protections for ecosystems in international waters are clearly not enough.”
Greenpeace is calling for stronger action against deadly ghost gear to be implemented, including agreement of a strong Global Ocean Treaty at the United Nations that could protect at least 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030, by putting it off-limits to harmful human activities, including industrial fishing.
The “Ghost Gear” report shows that 6% of all nets used, 9% of all traps, and 29% of all longlines (fishing lines that are several kilometers long) remain as pollution at sea. Not only does old fishing waste go on killing marine life, but it also seriously damages underwater habitats. Seamounts are particularly affected because they are often heavily

By Ian Greenland If one of your new year’s resolutions is to achieve a better work-life balance, you won’t be alone. This year 94% of American workers have reported workplace stress, whilst in the UK in 2017/18, 15.4 million working days were lost due to job related stress or anxiety. Even accounting for the“World Cup effect” on 2018 work attendance, that’s an issue. I couldn’t find more recent figures online so I’m reasonably assuming the person who usually collates them was off for a couple of days with an anxiety-induced migraine... so that must mean at least 15.4 million and two working days lost in 2018/2019 – this thing’s only getting worse! ...To be honest I’ve been feeling a little over-stretched myself recently, but I’m no dosser, so count yourselves lucky you’re still able to read my baseless assumptions when instead I could have been in bed with the curtains drawn, rewatching Game of Thrones. Whilst work appears to be an inescapable fact of life for the majority of us not descended from aristocracy, lottery winners or Jeremy Kyle guests, a renewed emphasis on the importance of mindfulness, mental health and the sustainability of the planet and its inhabitants has more and more of us ruminating on which side of the “work to live or live to work” line we might fall. With increasing numbers of workers complaining they’re burnt out, disengaged or unfocussed day to day, the notion that reducing working hours can actually lead to higher productivity from a better rested, happier workforce is gaining traction.
SEVERAL BIG BUSINESSES HAVE TRIALLED FOUR DAY WEEKS TO REMARKABLE RESULTS.
Perhaps most notably, Microsoft’s recent Work Life Choice Challenge Summer 2019 (coming up with that title probably gave someone a stress headache) allowed the entire workforce of its Japan offices, some 2300 people, five consecutive Fridays off. Critically, as is the case with most of these trials, pay remained constant despite the reduction in hours. After all, motivation, focus and productivity are unlikely to increase if everyone simply gets a fifth of a sacking.
108
In Microsoft’s case, the company concluded that the shortened week led to more efficient meetings, happier workers and an eye-watering 40% increase in productivity, which must come as welcome news to struggling founder Bill Gates who apparently is down to his last 110 BILLION dollars (This year he narrowly squeezed past Amazon founder Jeff Bezos as world’s richest person - shouldn’t have helped shift so many of Bill’s computers should you Bezos you donut!). At least Gates donates a sizeable portion of his stash through various philanthropic causes – cynics argue charity is primarily borne of guilt and the man responsible for Windows Vista has a lot to be guilty about, but at least he just gave 2300 people longer weekends. Of course if productivity goes down, presumably they’ll trial 22 hour shifts instead but the point is, big companies are trying radical shit because they care.... about profits.
NEVERTHELESS, THE ADVANTAGES OF A SHORTER WEEK APPEAR TO BE NUMEROUS, BENEFITING NOT JUST THE BOTTOM LINE, BUT THE EMPLOYEES AND THE PLANET In Microsoft’s trial, staff took 25% less time off than usual, office electricity use dropped 23% and printing paper consumption was down a staggering 59%, proving unhappy office workers only really hit PRINT so they can leave their desk to watch paper inch endlessly out the office Epsom like their childhood hopes and aspirations spooling away into the abyss of administrative purgatory.... or because Jenny who sits near the Epsom looks a bit like a ginger Khaleesi if you squint.
harnessed technology to apparently make our lives easier. When social media “celebrities” can get rich from their bedrooms by sharing a few videos of themselves liking brands who’ve given them free shit, do the rest of us really need to spend more than half our waking lives toiling away or commuting to and from said toil to the detriment of our health, happiness, relationships and the planet? It would by no means be easy to extricate millions of employers and their staff from the current system, the logistics of which might require a good few 4-day weeks to get right - It’s no good everyone simply getting Fridays to ourselves if we can’t go anywhere or do anything cos every other bugger’s off too. A complex, systematic retooling would be necessary and only catalysed with the genuine and widespread will of those putting in the hours – a belief from the masses that there is another way to live. Since at least a large proportion of us are finally waking up to the notion that life-aswe-know-it (consume, consume, consume!!) can’t continue without a severe bloody reckoning from the planet we inhabit, we might as well use this watershed moment of reflection to wangle a bit more time away from the grindstone.
Whether we then use that time to go out and smell the roses or simply draw the curtains and watch Jon Snow get shanked again is up to us, but let’s not be at work when the world ends.
www.iangreenland.uk
Ultimately 92% of employees said they preferred the 4 day week, the / my assumption being that the other 8% wanted more unsolicited squint time with Jenny and so probably aren’t the type of folk we should be consulting for our utopian manifesto. Further benefits of a shorter week are less money and carbon wasted by staff on commuting, the option for parents to spend more time with young children whilst saving on childcare costs, easier staff retention and recruitment for employers and the potential for smaller premises with lower utility costs. In truth, our five day week is a relic of the industrial revolution and let’s not forget during the industrial revolution we sent kids up chimneys and into large whirring machines. Now we’ve got ultrafast broadband, contactless cards, driverless cars and one-click delivery. We’ve

Taragalte experience
A
New Year calls for fresh starts, shifts in priorities, sometimes even a complete personal overhaul, but most of all we look for positive change. There’s no better way, in my opinion, to invoke this than by engaging in new experiences. Let’s look for something different, something that takes us out of our little boxes, our comfort zones and truly immerses us in a whole new world. I’m not talking about jumping out of a plane, although that can be an amazing experience (parachute permitting), but more of a culturally diverse, eye-opening indulgence. This issue we are looking at an incredible festival held in the outskirts of the Sahara in our neighbouring country Morocco. This festival is nothing like you have seen before unless you have stumbled across it whilst touring in a caravan of camels across the desert! The Taragalte Festival, literally meaning “meeting place”, was born in 2009, and came as a desire for peace and unity in the Sub Saharan regions it hails from. The nomadic people of these lands are bursting with culture and heritage which within this festival are translated and shared via art, creation, humanity and music. The festival is inspired from the Moussem and its traditions, in order to contribute to the socio-economic development of the region and to promote the nomadic culture. The forces behind Taragalte eloquently claim that “the festival is a real hymn to
110
THE FESTIVAL IS A REAL HYMN TO THE SAHARA THAT INVITES YOU TO DISCOVER OR REDISCOVER ITS GEOGRAPHY, ITS HISTORY AND THE MYSTERY OF ITS IMMENSITY, THE PHANTASMAGORIA OF ITS LUMINOUS NIGHTS, ITS CHANGEABLE WINDS, ITS SOVEREIGN ANGER, ITS ENVIRONMENT BOTH HOSTILE AND FRAGILE BUT ALSO SO GENEROUS AND RICH. the Sahara that invites you to discover or rediscover its geography, its history and the mystery of its immensity, the phantasmagoria of its luminous nights, its changeable winds, its sovereign anger, its environment both hostile and fragile but also so generous and rich.” I don’t think there are better words to try to describe the incredible energy that the area and therefore festival embraces; seeing and feeling is believing in this case. My father-in-law recently visited the festival and was overwhelmed by the sheer expanse of the star-filled skies which render you immensely spiritual, yet an existential wisp of a fragment in the bounty of our atmosphere. Looking around and realising the vastness that the desert beholds is truly something both humbling and empowering. It is like no other place on earth and, as my father-in-law experienced, it was not overwhelming and unsettling but rather more a feeling of beauty and belonging to something far greater than the physical self. Held 7km from the village of M’Hamid El Ghizlane the festival connects local people with those from all over the globe seeking out an alternative experience and an understanding of nomadic life in the desert alongside incredible music, culture and art. Communication is key and the locals immerse themselves in the visiting communities to integrate and share their ways of life. You can organise camel rides, 4X4 treks out to the big dunes, enjoy lunch out in the desert, go
on tours of the Oasis and Kasbah with lunch among locals, rental quad bikes to go on guided tours of the dunes. The Tatagalte offers workshops to learn the local trades, yoga classes, or the opportunity to simply dance the night away to the wonders of the artists that grace the stage. The music is something to behold, each group features some of the most incredibly talented artists skilfully blending traditional beats with modern sounds to create powerful, uplifting music which truly touches the soul and urges the body to express its tribal nature. Being an environmentally conscious eco-festival the protection of the local environment is paramount to the organisers and local folk; they ask that you only take your memories with you and leave your footprints behind. Accommodation comes in the form of areas where beautiful structural tents are gathered, all filled and surrounded by a bounty of local carpets and authentic decoration. There is a restaurant on the site which serves up traditional food unlike any other Moroccan cuisine you will ever taste considering your surroundings, the company and that everything is local and prepared on the premises. Alternatively you can head for the nearest village and travel to and from the festival, but to truly immerse yourself in the spirit of this gathering, onsite accommodation is your best option. You are also free to bring your own camping equipment and set up near the site of the Bivouac oasis, the last before entering the depths of the Sahara itself.
Make sure you pack things which the Sahara may not offer you; sun and wind protection including scarves, sunscreen, warm clothes for the evening, reusable water bottles, and useful items such as a torch, lip balm, wet wipes, sunglasses, and any medication you may need during your stay.
To learn more about nomadic culture, to taste the genuine cuisine of the locals, to delve into the music of the newer generation combined with their ancestors and to bask in the glory of the night’s sky, and of course if you want to meet like-minded people; this is your festival.
LOOKING AROUND AND REALISING THE VASTNESS THAT THE DESERT BEHOLDS IS TRULY SOMETHING BOTH HUMBLING AND EMPOWERING.
THE MUSIC IS TRULY SOMETHING TO BEHOLD, EACH GROUP FEATURES SOME OF THE MOST INCREDIBLY TALENTED ARTISTS SKILFULLY BLENDING TRADITIONAL BEATS WITH MODERN SOUNDS
The Carpet of Life For an example of how the tradition of Saharan industry has combined with the modern world there is a beautiful concept that has emerged from Taragalte; the ‘Carpet of Life’. The women of the Taragalte Concept offer to transform any materials you may own with a personal attachment, such as your old graduation gown, a blanket your child once loved, anything with meaning to you, into a beautiful and unique ‘Carpet of Life’. “Textiles are hard to come by in these isolated parts. With your second-hand clothing as vital raw material, these women cannot only sustain their heritage and an ancient art form, but also generate an income and secure a better future for their families”. This could make a beautiful, touching gift but also help to support the women of the Sahara. Spherical TrigonometryAnd All That In April 1491, the armies of Queen Isabella and King Fernando laid siege to the city of Granada. They brought with them cannon and a new type of firearm known as the arquebus. By November, Sultan Muhammad XII (“Boabdil”) was forced to surrender. The city officially capitulated on January 2, 1492, and 800 years of Muslim rule in Spain came to an end. This occupation began in 711 AD when a Berber army under Tariq ibn-Ziyad crossed the narrow stretch of water separating Africa from Europe and occupied an area which became known as “Al-Andalus”. Tariq gave his name to “Jabal al-Tariq” (Mount Tarik), which we know today as Gibraltar. The arab army was described as: “The reins of their horses were as fire, their faces black as pitch, their eyes
112
shone like burning candles, their horses were swift as leopards and the riders fiercer than a wolf in a sheepfold at night… The noble Goths were broken in an hour, quicker than tongue can tell.” These “Goths” were in fact the Visigothic rulers of the Iberian península, some of whom had actually invited an invasion following the death of King Witiza in 710 AD and the usurpation of Roderick. A contemporary Moorish chronicler did not view the Visigoths in a very favorable light:
THEY ARE NEARER ANIMALS THAN MEN…THEY ARE BY NATURE UNTHINKING AND THEIR MANNERS CRUDE. THEIR BELLIES PROTRUDE; THEIR COLOUR IS WHITE AND THEIR HAIR IS LONG. IN SHARPNESS AND DELICACY OF SPIRIT AND IN INTELECTUAL PERSPICACITY THEY ARE NIL. IGNORANCE, LACK OF REASONING POWER AND BOORISHNESS ARE COMMON AMONG THEM.
This low (racist?!) opinion extended beyond Spain into Europe in general. As late as the 13th century the Moors regarded Europeans as little more than savages. They viewed the palaces of the rulers of England, France and Germany when compared to the palaces of Spain as “scarcely better than stables”. Indeed, the great palace of the Alhambra (“The Red One”) retains its magnificence today. At the time of its construction the “stables” were virtually big barns without windows or chimneys, with only a whole in the roof to let out the smoke. Their princely inhabitants were mostly unable to read or write, with ninety-nine per cent of their subjects totally illiterate The education of the Moors was at such a level that the scholars of Seville, Cordoba and Toledo were writing treatises on spherical trigonometry when Oxford´s mathematical syllabus in the 14th century did not stretch beyond Euclid´s fifth proposition. It was truly felt that “whatever makes a kingdom great, whatever tends to refinement and civilisation was found in Moorish Spain”.
The conquest was swift. Tariq spent the winter of 711 in Tulaytulah (Toledo) the Visigothic capital. The following year the governor of north Africa, Musa ibn Nasayr, himself led an army across the strait and laid siege to Mahrida (Mérida) which he occupied. He joined Tariq in Toledo in 713, and advanced north east, capturing Saraqustah (Zaragoza). By the end of 714 when both Tariq and Musa were recalled to Syria by the Caliph al-Walid I in Damascus most of the Iberian península as far as Asturias was under Muslim control. Over the following centuries the peninsula flourished and outpaced western Europe in virtually every sphere of human activity. It has been said that nowhere was “more admired by its neighbours, or more comfortable to live in, than a rich African civilisation which took place in Spain”. The final demise of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada was in no small part due to the gradual dilution of Moorish blood in its rulers. Boabdil himself dyed his fair hair black to preserve his arab appearance! At its height Córdova, the heart of Moorish territory, was the most modern city in Europe. It boasted well paved streets, with raised sidewalks for pedestrians and ten miles of lighting. (Paris had to wait hundreds of years for such pavements, or London for such street lighting.) The city also boasted 900 public baths, and it was said that a citizen would rather go without bread than soap!
In parallel to the mosque Córdova boasted a great university and library which housed no fewer than six hundred thousand manuscripts. Public libraries in Europe were nonexistent, whilst apart from that in Córdova, Moorish Spain boasted seventeen, with great universities not only in Córdova but also in Almeria, Granada, Jaen, Málaga, Sevilla and Toledo. The remainder of Europe had to wait until 1088 for the fooundation of the University of Bologna.
The Great Mosque was, and remains, one of the wonders of the world, despite later Spanish vandalism. (In the 16th century a renaissance cathedral nave was constructed in the middle of the expansive structure by permission of Charles V. However, when he visited the completed cathedral he famously commented:
YOU HAVE DESTROYED SOMETHING UNIQUE TO BUILD SOMETHING COMMONPLACE At its height the low scarlet and gold roof, supported by a thousand columns of marble, jasper and porphyry, was lit by thousands of brass and silver lamps buring scented oil.
The Spanish universities developed the astrolabe for measuring the heavens, and such disciplines as chemistry, physics, mathematics, geography and philosophy. Indeed, such words as algebra and chemistry derive directly from the Arabic, together with 4000 more; alcohol, alkaline, cipher, typhoon, orange, checkmate… Such scholarship was recorded on paper (a Moorish invention). “Arabic” numerals were imported from India to replace the clumsy Roman system, whilst from China came the use of the compass to aid in navigation. In the field of the Arts the musician Ziryab (“the blackbird”) who arrived in 822, introduced the lute, the guitar, and the lyre. He also introduced the idea of “courses” at mealtimes, beginning with soup and ending with dessert. Nor did the Moors neglect the introduction of ítems of more immediate use to the general population. The list is long: oranges, lemons, peaches, apricots, figs, sugar cane, dates, ginger, pomegranates, saffron, cotton, rice and silk. Many of these commodities remain a staple of Spanish agriculture today.

In this month’s feature Rob answers all the questions we know you wish to ask and helps us understand a little more about living his most sustainable life.
Living his best life, Rob Greenfield is an adventurist, environmental activist, humanitarian and a dude making a difference. He is dedicated to leading the way to a more sustainable and just world.
What about health insurance and old age? Of course, there are people worried that if I get injured that “they will be paying for it.” I can simply say that they do not understand how deeply I have thought out my actions and how convicted I am to my actions and beliefs. Taxpayers will not pay my medical bills if I ever have any.
Even though you cut your driver’s license, don’t you still have one? No, by cutting it up and letting it expire, it means I really don’t have a driver’s license. I cannot legally drive a car.
You say you don’t want to drive fossil fuel powered vehicles. What about electric? In the USA about 80% of our electricity is generated by fossil fuels, which means most electric cars at this point are ultimately powered by fossil fuels. It’s more efficient than using the fossil fuels directly in the car, but indirectly still burning fossil fuels. I have also committed to a life of mostly non-ownership, thus I would not own an electric car either. I did use an electric car share program for a few years when I lived in San Diego, which I find to be a far better use of resources. But today I have found the benefits of having no driver’s
114 114
license to far outweigh the benefits of having one. I am also very supportive of public transportation that creates a more equal society, rather than private vehicles.
What if there’s an emergency and you need to drive? The odds are that in an emergency that would require a car there would be someone else who could drive it. If not, and there’s a real emergency that requires me to drive then I would hop in the car and drive without even hesitating at not having a license
I BELIEVE IN USING COMMON SENSE AND I DON’T FOLLOW LAWS BLINDLY. IF IN THE UNLIKELY SCENARIO I GOT IN TROUBLE, I’D BE FINE WITH THAT FOR SAVING A LIFE. What ID’s do I have? I still have my passport and birth certificate. For now, I will continue to have those forms of identification, but it is possible that I will decide to have no identification in the future. I’d like to note that a driver’s license is used as ID, but it is first and foremost a license to drive, and second an ID. For most people, it seems the driver’s license is synonymous with an ID. I don’t need the driver’s license aspect so I can use other forms of ID.
Am I independently wealthy? No, I grew up very low income. My mom made under $20,000/ year to support my 3 siblings and I. I never had a trust fund or anything of that sort. I have made vows to live with very little money.
Am I moving completely out of society? No, absolutely not. I am not trying to remove myself from society at all. I aim to wedge myself deeply into it, but in a way that causes positive change within society. I aim to be an example that can affect positive change, and removing myself from society would not do that. For me, it’s a balance of removing the parts of my life that cause inequality, while adding to my life in a way that creates benefit for society and Earth.
What about housing? I don’t intend to ever rent an apartment or buy a home. In 2015 I lived off the grid in a tiny house and did a work trade for the small piece of land to put my house on. For 2016 to 2017 I travelled and did service projects and stayed in over 200 places. I have just moved to Orlando and will set up a tiny house homestead and do a work exchange for a backyard to set up in. If I decide to go the monetary route for a place to stay, then I could rent a room in someone’s house or apartment and pay cash. It’s more likely I will do volunteer and work exchange for simple housing.
How do you pay for your website? At this point, I run a nonprofit, Happy Healthy and Free. Costs such as running this website go through the Happy Healthy and Free bank account. The account is with a local credit union and the nonprofit does not have a credit card. I would like to move away from having a nonprofit, however, my goal is to position myself to have the most positive impact that I can, and running a nonprofit allows me to do that at this point. Of course the nonprofit follows a mission statement so I cannot use that
money for anything outside of that. My goal is not to completely remove myself from the monetary system, but to minimize my involvement and use it in ways that create benefit and not destruction. I don’t have any personal monthly bills as I live very simply. My cell phone was my last bill but I cancelled that in January 2015.
Why did you keep your passport and birth certificate? Why not go the “whole way?” My goal is to position myself to live in a way that I provide the most benefit to society and Earth. Simplifying my life to live more fully in the service of others is an instrumental part of that. I have been on this path for about 7 years and never have I jumped off the deep end into anything. I am taking everything one step at a time. It’s possible that I will get rid of these things in my lifetime, but at this time it’s not what I want to do. I still travel internationally on speaking tours and I need my passport for that, but I don’t need the things I’ve gotten rid of to do that.
There has been some talk on social media about my identity being stolen because my driver’s license is online. That driver’s license is expired by sixteen months so nothing can be done with it. I have not lived at the address on the card for three years. In late 2017 I checked my credit and I have no credit score. Because I cancelled all my last credit card in summer of 2014, enough time has passed where I have no credit score. I don’t believe a credit thief would have much success with my credit. Also, my credit is locked which prevents most theft. People that are more within the system have a much higher likelihood of their credit being stolen than I do.
Did you burn the cards? That’s not environmentally friendly. I did not burn the plastic cards, just the paper. Also, I do note how bad of a fire I made that day, but it did get the job done.
Some people have this idea of “all or nothing” but I don’t live like that. It goes along with what I said about the tendency to make issues black and white. There is only grey, no black and white. And there is no “all or nothing,” only varying levels. I also kept two forms of identification because that allows me to get identification such as a state ID if I decide to.

MAX Quality Meet the man behind the Metro Group’s menus

As you have probably gathered by now, we do our fair share of food reviews here at SOCIETY Marbella, but dining alongside the chef, now that doesn’t happen quite so often. This month we had the pleasure of dinner with Max Pignataro, Executive Chef of Metro Grupo.
COSTA CUISINE
Metro Grupo’s mantra is simple; great food, wonderful settings, professional service and good value. Max is responsible for the first, and most important aspect, overseeing the food in all twelve of the group’s establishments including Alberts Bar and Grill, ; the location for our recent dinner. Overlooking the beautiful port of Cabopino, Alberts offers breakfast, lunch and dinner serving a creative and varied menu packed with seasonal dishes with produce sourced locally as much as possible. Open all year round, it is particularly popular on Sundays for their famous Sunday roast including a hog roast and regular live entertainment with a variety of popular tribute acts. You meet a lot of characters in Marbella but Max’s story is quite extraordinary; at only 17 years old, he opened his own restaurant in Argentina but that wasn’t where this tale began. From the tender age of six, he helped wash pots
and dishes in his father’s restaurant before moving onto cooking when he turned 14. You could say hospitality was in his blood. His father was from Italy and his mother from France, as well as the restaurant, his father also owned a German-French bakery, his grandfather was a cheese-maker and his uncle owned a restaurant in Italy. If anyone was born to cook, Max was. Eager to expand his knowledge he moved to Europe working in restaurants in Portugal, Italy and Spain before settling in London working as the Head Chef at the National Gallery, cooking at the British Library, the Theatre royal and the Institute of Contemporary Art Gallery. His talents also took him across the globe, working
in tropical paradises such as the prestigious Fregate Private Island in the Seychelles and Richard Branson’s famous Necker Island. Hearing Max tell his story, and the passion that he has for food and the art of cooking was not only inspiring, it also had us very excited to get stuck in and taste. We started with the Soft Cajun Chicken Tacos served with chunky guacamole and lime crème fraîche; the tangy accompaniment completed the spiced chicken effortlessly. Next up was my personal favourite, Chargrilled Iberico Pork Secreto served with spiced apple mashed potato, crispy chorizo and pear cider reduction. Never, throughout all my dining experiences have I sampled a dish bursting with more flavour than this, the pork was as tender as can be, a melt-in-themouth moment. I would even go so far as to say this was the nicest pork dish I have sampled in a restaurant, quite a statement I know! To conclude we opted for a meat feast with Albert’s Mixed Grill comprising of steak, lamb cutlet, sausage, chicken and all topped off with a fried egg! If you’re hungry and you
NEVER, THROUGHOUT ALL MY DINING EXPERIENCES HAVE I SAMPLED A DISH BURSTING WITH MORE FLAVOUR THAN THIS
mean business, then this is your dish; a pure protein feast, perfectly cooked, seasoned and served…. Metro Grupo pride themselves on great food but we would say this was exceptional. The company wasn’t too bad either!

Where to Eat, Shop and Drink Coffee in Tokyo
Bettina, our resident foodie, offers her insider knowledge on plant based cuisine and takes us on a culinary journey as she travels the world in search of gastronomic inspiration
Vegan in Japan i
visited Japan with two wonderful clients for their creative project and I absolutely fell in love with the place. Japan might not strike you immediately as somewhere that would facilitate a plant-based diet, but it turns out, Tokyo at least, has more to offer vegans than plain rice and seaweed — it’s a trove of treats for vegans!
In fact, although Japanese culture is famed for its meat and seafood staples, it wasn’t until the end of the 19th century that red meat and dairy were introduced from the West. A traditional Japanese meal before then consisted of rice, beans, seaweed and vegetables, and a lot of traditional dishes can easily be made vegan friendly. Look out for ‘shojin ryori’, the mostly vegan diet followed by the Zen Buddhist monks. This is my guide bursting with tried and tested restaurant, coffee and shopping recommendations, which you can find on my Tokyo Map, too!
Know before you go: LANGUAGE: The official language in Tokyo and throughout Japan is Japanese. Although it’s respectful and nice to know how to say a minimum of ‘please’ and ‘thank-you’ in the local language wherever you visit, English is used widely in Tokyo, so you’ll be fine navigating your way around using solely English. The people speak a fair amount and road signs and travel info are usually accompanied by English translations. I recommend a translator app though!
MONEY: Currency: Japanese Yen ATMs: You’ll only find ATMs inside 7Eleven stores and post offices. Although Tokyo is quickly adapting to card usage, cash is still pretty much king in Japan, even with chains and big businesses, so be sure to always have some on you. Tokyo is one of the world’s most expensive cities, so be warned; money disappears here very quickly!
120
EXTRA TIPS: Transport etiquette is taken seriously in Japan, particularly on the subway where phones must be on silent and calls cannot be taken. Public bins are super hard to find, but despite the lack of official trash disposal, littering is pretty much absent from the streets. Do what the locals do and keep your rubbish with you until you can throw it away at your hotel. Tipping isn’t expected or accepted. In fact, it’s actually considered by the Japanese to be rather rude, so keep your pennies for your own spending money.

BREAKFAST & BRUNCH For Pancakes
Burn Side Street Cafe If you enjoy big plates of fluffy pancakes you have to come here to start your day and try the brilliant souffle pancakes for breakfast.
For Eggs Eggcellent This is a really cool cafe that wouldn’t look out of place in East London. This is the place to get your eggs, avo on toast and stacks of pancakes. The coconut pancakes are a winner.
For Avo Madosh Vegans and non-vegans, try Madosh cafe, they’re even more obsessed with avos than I am! Give the avopuccino a try, even if just for the ‘gram!
For Organic Coffee Urth Cafe Based on the fact that coffee is one of the world’s most chemically processed crops, Urth Cafe serves only the highest quality, sustainable, organic coffee.
For Brunch Blue Jam Cafe This place is the one for brunch! Come here if you love all-day American style brunch with a healthy twist. The food is also really reasonably priced. There are two locations: Daikanyama, and Azabu Juban in the middle of the city.
For Coffee Kappabashi Coffee A super relaxing and friendly atmosphere to enjoy your morning single origin. Transforms into a cocktail bar at night.
Yazawa Coffee Roasters ‘No chairs, no tables, just the best coffee in the world’. Make like the locals and sip your morning brew true Japanese style, standing! It doesn’t get much simpler than this, but the coffee speaks for itself.
Lattest Head to Lattest for truly great hipsterstyle coffee and chill vibes.
For Natural Innovation Mominoki House ‘Nature is perfect’, says chef and owner of Mominoki House, Eichiro Yamada Mominoki House is a lovely natural, organic food restaurant that wants to make a big change when it comes to how we grow and consume our food. They cook everything using “Electronic Ion Water” and grow their veggies using
a non-fertilizer cultivation method. To achieve successful crops with this method of natural farming, the farmers pay meticulous attention to nature; talking to and loving their plants to nurture strong and nourishing crops. My kind of place! They say farmers using this method need to ‘look at nature as a teacher, and always respect it’. Hear, hear! I recommend the tofu steak with ginger sauce and a cup of their delicious organic coffee.
LUNCH For Lunch Cosme Kitchen Adaptation The kind of place you can park up and settle down in to read, work or catch up with friends. Cosme Kitchen Adaptation is based on the concept of ‘clean eating’ so expect natural, whole food choices. Alongside their seasonal menu options of burgers, sandwiches, pasta, rice bowls, you’ll find the allyou-can-eat raw, organic, vegan salad bar - this is what I come for! You can build your own salad out of the most amazing array of fresh and fun ingredients including acai, chia, goji berries, cold pressed oils and fruits. Save room for a vegan ice cream parfait for dessert!
For Lots of Little Dishes Kitaohji Kaiseki The place to come for Japanese Kaiseki cuisine. This restaurant is one of the oldest and most famous Japanese kaiseki restaurants in all of Japan. Meticulous attention goes to all details here for a full sensory dining experience, Kitaohji is a haven of serenity from the crazy Tokyo streets. There is a bamboo garden to welcome you to the restaurant for authentic Japanese vibes. Inside you’ll find a grill station and a sushi bar, but there are plenty of veggie options and all fare is seasonal, too!
For Snacks - Natural House Tokyo’s answer to WholeFoods! The place to go to pick up veggie and vegan snacks and nibbles. Take your translator app to make sense of the Japanese labels. Also, be warned, it’s not cheap!
For Juice Trueberry Cold pressed juice and the ‘clean eating’ trend are still fairly new concepts to Japan and Trueberry was one of the first to introduce quality, cold pressed juices and smoothies to Tokyo. The owner opened the shop with the mission of making the perfect smoothie using the best possible ingredients. A surprisingly tricky thing to achieve! Trueberry understand the importance of timing when it comes to blending - long enough for a smooth consistency but not so long as to destroy flavour and nutrients with the heat of the blender. Come here to try smoothies and juices made using traditional Japanese superfoods including Amazake and Kuzu. Definitely try one of their hot smoothies!
For the Kids Crayon House If you’re in Japan with the kiddos, bring them here for an organic lunch and a spot of toy shopping. You can also pick up organic kid-friendly snacks, cotton and skincare products.

DINNER For Nature Lovers THE BLIND DONKEY Named after Ikkyu, the legendary 15th century zen teacher, The Blind Donkey says, ‘We cook to keep our feet firmly on the ground, to feel the wind, taste the rain and know the seasons.’ And you can taste that ethos in their exquisite food.
For Fully Vegan BROWN RICE CAFE Set above Neal’s Yard in Omotesando, the fancy area of town, Brown Rice Cafe is a totally vegan restaurant that uses locally sourced organic veggies. Child friendly and cosy, it’s a lovely casual spot for a meat-free meal. Dishes here are beautifully styled and authentically Japanese. Discover traditional Japanese fermented foods on Brown Rice Cafe’s menu, including miso and pickles.
The Blind Donkey is based on the collaboration between Jérôme Waag and Shin Harakawa who travel Japan together to gather inspiration and ideas from food producers dedicated to natural, humane and sustainable farming practices. Try the braised winter melon with Yuzu salsa verde and fried Toya potatoes with black pepper and aioli. Delish.
For French/Japanese Bistro Fusion PIGNON Inspired by chef Rimpei Yoshikawa’s travels through France and Morocco, Pignon is an unexpected boho delight. It’s charming, fun and affordable. Order the house special guacamole—yes, that’s guacamole on a French bistro menu!
For Ramen AFURI You haven’t tried ramen until you’ve had ramen at Afuri. It’s light and fresh thanks to the citrus in the yuzu they make it with, which is so unique. They also boil their ramen in fresh local spring water. A vegetable and egg free raman dish is on the menu for vegans.
For the Michelin Star YAKITORI TORIYOSHI There’s a lot of meat on the menu here (‘tori’ means ‘chicken’ in Japanese), but also plenty of vegetable options. If you do eat meat, Torioshi, with its Michelin star, is the place to do it. They cook with Binchotan” charcoal, which releases infrared rays, making food extra crispy. Also a fab place for cocktails.
For Curry KAKURA
ONCE YOUR FULL
Get here early or order ahead to grab one of their amazing medicinal-herb curries before they run out for the day!
For Cherry Blossom NAKAMEGURO The best spot to see the famous Japanese cherry blossoms. Nakameguro becomes a canal side blossomy spectacular in Spring. At sunsets the trees are lit with lanterns, the best time to head down.
122
SHOPPING AND CULTURE OMOTESANDO DISTRICT Close to Harajuku but incredibly different in vibes, Omotesando is one of the loveliest and the most expensive neighbourhood in Tokyo. This is a luxury shopping destination, it’s also a foodie hub, with vegan options galore, speciality coffee and craft beer for the hipster in you.
For Chefs KAPPABASHI Calling all chefs - this is the place to come for all your knife and cooking tools needs! Kappabashi is Tokyo’s ‘Kitchen Town’ and is like DisneyLand for professional and hobby chefs. Here you’ll find beautiful artisan made Japanese steel knives as a practical memento of your trip. Kamaasa Knife Company sells good quality knives at fair prices.
For Fresh Food & a Weekend Wander UNU FARMERS MARKET Farmer’s Markets aren’t difficult to come by in Tokyo, but the UNU market, in the heart of the Omotesando fashion district, is one of the loveliest. The market, run by the United Nations University, is a weekend institution for locals. Find fresh fruit, vegetables, plants and flowers, rice and other foodie goodies across more than 40 stalls. Most of the offerings are grown by farmers based in the Kanto plain area so it’s all local. The market’s beautiful motto is ‘water, sun and the earth’.
For the Little Brooklyn of Tokyo DAIKANYAMA A popular weekend destination for Tokyo locals, Daikanyama has a chill vibe with its leafy, car free streets and huge choice of outdoor cafes to settle down in for an afternoon of eating and people watching. You’ll also get your art and culture fix here. Daikanyama is easy
KOENJI
to reach by train from Shibuya station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line,
For Art, Nightlife and Museums ROPPONGI HILL BUILDING Roppongi Hills is about a five minute walk from the Hibiya Line platform of Roppongi Station and a ten minute walk from the Oedo Line platform of Roppongi Station. Here you’ll find Mori Tower, one of the tallest buildings in Tokyo and a hub for entertainment. The bottom floors have lots of restaurants and shops and there’s an observation deck and modern art museum at the top for you art lovers. There’s a cinema too, playing Japanese and international movies. You’ll find a little sanctuary of Japanese landscaped nature between the tall buildings of Roppongi Hills called the Mori Garden. The garden is home to some cherry trees so it’s an amazing spot for lunch and some photos during blossom season.
For Laid Back Healthy Shopping EBISU MARKET Ebisu is a sweet little area of Tokyo. It’s quite a relaxing, laid back contrast from other parts of the city. Visit Ebisu for its cozy and small restaurants, pubs and the famous tachinomiya standing bars. The area’s market is small and quaint. You’ll see it from Ebisu Station Garden Walkway and at the entrance to Ebisu Garden Place. If you’re a geek for unusual, traditional ingredients, put Ebisu Market on your list! Here you can find seasonal Japanese staples including kaki (persimmons), mikan, yuzu, daikon and kabu. You can also pick up some rare dried natto here. Prepare to get plenty of kitchen inspo!
For Department Store Shopping TAKASHIMAYA Takashimaya is a renowned Japanese department store chain selling more upscale, luxury products.
For Weekend Strolls KOENJI Koenji is a fun stop on the Chou line that’s definitely worth checking out for walking around on a weekend afternoon. It was home to Tokyo’s punk scene in the 1970s and early 1980s, though it’s not so punky these days. You can pick up some fab vintage bits here. Food here is good, more so for cheap eats than fine dining.
For Authentic Japanese Chill ASAKURA HOUSE When you’ve had enough of shopping, escape for an afternoon to this tranquil wooden mansion with its mossy, manicured gardens to soak in some traditional Japanese architecture and calm.

It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had known each other. He then suddenly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I turned around to see what he was pointing at, and as I looked down, a light shone on to the rocks where there was a sign that read, ‘Marry Me?’. I then turned back around to see that Bhavesh had got down on one knee! He told me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life and more with me

When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

MEANT TO BE…
We were young, crazy and care free at 17 years old. We knew of each other through friends and in the few times we would bump into each other I would sometimes get a wink and a smile and he would get a little wave back. Who would have known that 17 years later, I would be married to him!

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…
The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

morning, the blessing ceremony in the afternoon followed by cocktails and the reception party into the night. All were outdoors, the weather was amazing and all this infused with the surroundings and the ‘buzz’ our guests came with made it truly the best wedding, I myself, had ever been to, and I still can’t believe that it was my own. I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.

WAVES ABOVE THE REST Climate change is an evident reality and one of the main sectors affected by this global problem will be the nautical sector, due to the increase in sea level. The Andalucian nautical sector is not waiting for any legislation to be put in place and has already begun to apply measures to care for the environment and promote sustainability for the changing coastline. One of the most important points for the climatic emergency is the awareness of citizens actions. To highlight this, Marinas de Andalucía is currently collaborating with the ‘Libera campaign, united against trash’. An initiative which aims to raise public awareness to keep natural spaces free of garbage. Materials are also being created to inform the public about the importance of biodiversity. Among the changes that are taking place in the Andalucian marinas is the implementation of electricity saving measures, both in buildings and in public lighting; the optimization of drinking water consumption, the installation of timers and stopcocks, immediate repair of supply pipes, as well as optimization of maintenance tasks related to the changes of oil and lubricants of vehicles and machinery.
HAPPY 50TH PUERTO BANÚS! This year Puerto Banús nautical complex will turn 50, an event that the mayoress of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, considers to be a great opportunity to promote the destination. Marbella council recently presented a campaign of activities to celebrate the anniversary, which will be promoted to the international, national and local public throughout the year. Ángeles Muñoz explained that “all the actions that Puerto Banús is developing to celebrate such a significant date will be very beneficial for the image of Marbella.” As one of the most renowned marinas in the world, both for its large number of berths and for being one of the most important open shopping centers with top luxury brands, Puerto Banús will be positioned as the gateway for Marbella and the Costa del Sol.

OVER 2 MILLION STEPS FROM MARBELLA TO MONACO
ANSWERING THE CALL 2019 was a very important year for Collective Calling. With only three years behind them, they have completed the construction of their first rescue centre in Tanzania, “Centre of Hope” and successfully rescued 15 street children. They also have been given the opportunity to be a part of ALDI supermarket food program, which has in turn expanded their work in Spain. Financially speaking they achieved a record 56,000€ in donations; acquired their first board members and recruited 11 members of staff in Tanzania. The first set of HIV tests were successfully conducted at the COH with a resounding all clear for each child. In addition, they have successfully conducted their first free summer camp for underprivileged children, which aims to combat behavioural issues and build social skills; and thanks to them each morning underprivileged children are provided with packed lunches to take to school. Collective Calling are now part of a collaborative global initiative of other like minded NGOs working together towards the reintegration of street children back into family. All of this is made possible by the continued generosity and dedication of our supporters and volunteers. Collectively, we are making a difference.

Marbella resident, Mick Slater recently completed a seemingly impossible challenge of walking from Marbella to Monaco (1000 miles) in just 30 days. Mick, owner of Cheeky Nutrition, used the walk to raise awareness and funds for ‘Mind’, a UK charity devoted to assisting people with mental health. The father of three trained for several months before starting the challenge, but claimed it wasn’t his legs that hurt during the walk, it was the severe blisters he developed on his feet along the way! After walking up to 13 hours per day, his wife Karen and daughter Claire, accompanied Mick in the evenings by driving ahead and arranging accommodation for each night. This allowed Mick to recuperate while he slept, ready to do it all again the next day until he reached his final destination in Monaco. So far Mick has raised a staggering £4,145.10 for Mind charity, you can follow the campaign and show your support here: justgiving.com/mickslater
