PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Well, I think we can all agree that 2020 couldn’t have been any more challenging. A year that brought genuine hardship to so many with widespread confusion and uncertainty prevailing throughout. With the year-end welcoming in a universally accepted vaccine and Spain preparing to administer it widespread to her people we can perhaps have reason for increased optimism. This transition to a new normal should herald renewed confidence but with so much worldwide mistrust we should all tread carefully and continue to support each other, look out for your neighbours, check in on friends and form small groups to help each other now more than ever. Our cover star, despite her striking beauty, knows a thing or two about needing a friend. Turn to page 18 to find out how Megan Fox struggled through school with bullying and how she only has one real lifetime female friend. Plus, this month’s Big & Small Screens on page 26 talks about her latest project, Aurora, an action-packed visual feast that sees her play a female astronaut stationed in outer space to monitor the solar storms that endanger earth. Another must-see this month is ´Our Friend´ starring Casey Affleck, Jason Segal and Dakota Johnson. The dramedy is based on a true story; Matt Teague and his vibrant wife Nicole have two young daughters. Their lives are suddenly turned upside down when Nicole is diagnosed with terminal cancer. As Matt’s responsibilities
as a caretaker and parent become overwhelming, the couple’s best friend offers to come and help. This heart-warming tale truly epitomises this year’s motto of friendship, family first and what is most important in life. It’s fair to say the focus for everyone is onwards and upwards and 2021 will be a better year. Our contributors, Claire & James Davis, also known as The Midlife Mentors, are on hand to help us make our goals a reality over the next twelve months. Plus, Clare Navas, from TLE, talks about how to detox our mind and bodies with a little help from elite CBD.
Society Marbella published and produced by:
Marbella people have an undeniable spirit, new businesses are still springing up during these adverse trading conditions and rely on our patronage to survive, we all need tourism to fuel our businesses and tourists won’t want to visit a ghost town. 2021 will be a year where compassion and community spirit are vital for our collective wellbeing. Let me take a moment to thank all our wonderful clients and readers for your incredible support and wishing everyone the best year possible.

orn on May 16th, 1986 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Megan Denise Fox spent her early childhood years in nearby Rockwood. Her father, a parole officer, and her mother divorced when she was just three. Megan’s mother later remarried and she and her sister were raised by her mother and her stepfather Tony Tonachio. She was raised ‘very strictly Pentecostal’ and later attended Catholic school for 12 years. At the age of five Megan began taking singing and dancing lessons, which

she continued until her family moved to Petersburg, Florida at the age of 10. When she turned 13, Megan began modelling after winning several awards at the 1999 American Modelling and Talent Convention in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Just a few years later, age 16, Megan dropped out of high school and moved to Los Angeles. Megan has spoken out in the past about her time at school, stating that in middle school she was bullied, not for
her looks, but because she always got on better with boys and that seemed to rub some people up the wrong way. She continued that she was never popular in high school and that ‘everyone hated me, and I was a total outcast, my friends were always guys, I have a very aggressive personality, and girls didn’t like me for that. I’ve had only one great girlfriend my whole life.’ In 2001 Fox landed her first break when she was cast as a bratty heiress in the

2001 Mary-Kate and Ashley comedy, Holiday in the Sun. The film, which had a large fanbase, went straight to DVD. Her next role in 2002 was in the Swedishproduced soap opera, Ocean Ave. That same year, she starred in TV show, What I Like About You, starring Amanda Bynes. 2004 was a big year for the young actress as she made an appearance on CBS hit comedy, Two and a Half Men, starring Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer, and was a series regular on the shortlived sitcom, The Help. She also played the daughter of Faith Ford’s character in the second and third seasons of Hope & Faith, for which she earned a Young Artists Award nomination in 2005. On the set Megan met actor Brian Austin Green and they began dating, she was 18 years old and he was 30. Reportedly, Green was initially reluctant to enter the relationship due to the age difference, “I had to convince him that I was slightly more responsible and well-spoken and had other things to bring to the table besides being 18,” shared Megan. In 2006 they got engaged but announced their separation in February 2009.
Her next role was as the rival of Lindsay Lohan’s character in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen but her big break came in 2007 when she was cast alongside Shia LaBeouf in the Steven Spielberg produced blockbuster Transformers. Megan played Mikaela Banes earning an MTV Movie Award nomination for breakthrough performance. But it was not just Megan’s film career that excelled her popularity. Her stunning appearance meant she regularly graced the pages of Maxim and FHM, where she was announced as Sexiest Woman Alive in 2008. 2008 also saw Megan star in the comedy, How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, before reprising her role as Mikaela Banes in Transformers: Rise of the Fallen. The sequel was another success and Megan signed onto the third instalment of the franchise. However, she later left the project reportedly due to a disagreement with director Michael Bay. In 2009 Megan played the lead role in Jennifer’s Body, the film received mixed reviews, but Megan’s performance earnt praise. She then went on to star in Jonah Hex and Passion Play which both received poor feedback. A voice role in Naya Legend of the Golden Dolphins, a 3D documentary film alongside an ensemble cast including, Kate Winslet, Elliot Page, Gerard Butler, James Franco, Julian Lennon, Diego Luna, Cheech Marin and Whoopi Goldberg followed. In June 2010, Megan and Brian became engaged once again marrying in a private ceremony at the Four Seasons Resort in Maui that same month.
In 2012 Fox appeared alongside Sacha Baron Cohen in The Dictator and starred in Judd Apatow’s This is 40 before setting aside her differences with her former director Michael Bay for his reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2014 and the sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows in 2016. In 2015 Megan and Brian announced their separation after 11 years together before reconciling in 2016 and welcoming their third son, Journey River Green. Returning to TV, she took on a recurring role in popular comedy New Girl in 2016 before hosting the four-part docu-series Legends of the Lost with Megan Fox which explored the historical value of mythological people and events such as the Amazons and the Trojan War. In 2019 the superstar worked alongside Korean actor Kim Myung-min in the lead role of Marguerite Higgins, an american news reporter in the Korean war film the Battle of Jangsari. Followed by the mystery-fantasy film, Above the Shadows opposite Olivia Thirlby and Alan Ritchson. Last year, Megan’s next role, family comedy, Think Like a Dog was released alongside Josh Duhamel as well as the action film, Rogue. Sadly, the same year Brian Austin Green announced that he and Megan had separated after nearly 10 years of marriage, but Fox went on to find love with Machine Gun Kelly. This year Megan is back and heading to outer space in the sci-fi thriller Aurora. The film sees the beauty play a female astronaut stationed in outer space to monitor solar storms that endanger Earth. We’ve featured the new release in this month’s Big Screen picks on page 26, described as an action packed visual feast we are sure it is going to be one of Fox’s career highlights.

Posting on her Instagram account she said, ‘after a brief hospitalisation, I’m now recuperating at a location away from Ozzy’ (who has tested negative). WRIGHT MOVE
T
he Heart FM star found fame on TOWIE but Mark Wright has since revealed a U-turn in his career having signed to League Two football club, Crawley Town. Mark first played with the squad 13 years ago, before his reality TV career began, but returned to train with the team at the end of last year. Talking of the signing Mark shared, ¨For 11 years since I fully retired from serious football I’ve missed it every day. My life took a complete U-turn when I was 22 and it’s been the best 10.5 years I could have ever dreamed of but my love for the game has never gone away and the fact that I never played a professional game in the Football League has always niggled away at me. If I don’t do it now, I never will and at 33, reaching the older side of a professional footballer... it has to be now. I’ve been training with #thereds for 2 months now, at first it was just for fitness & simply because I missed the game. When the manager, John Yems, who I played for 12 years ago here at Crawley asked me if I would like to take it further and sign for the club, of course I didn’t think twice and tonight I’m quite simply over the moon.¨ His proud wife, Michelle Keegan was among the first to comment on his Instagram post, sweetly telling her husband, “Never known such a hard working determined person, the word ‘can’t’ just isn’t in your vocabulary. Congratulations. So proud of you xxx.”

EVERMORE – Taylor Swift
Recent release Evermore is the 9th studio album by singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. Described as the sister album to the Grammy-nominated Folklore, released in July, Evermore was a surprising twist to the end of 2020. The album features songs written and recorded in the same sessions as Folklore Taylor explained, ¨To put it plainly, we just couldn’t stop writing songs. To try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We chose to wander deeper in. I’ve never done this before. In the past I’ve always treated albums as one-off eras and moved onto planning the next one after an album was released. There was something different with folklore. In making it, I felt less like I was departing and more like I was returning. I loved the escapism I found in these imaginary/not imaginary tales. I loved the ways you welcomed the dreamscapes and tragedies and epic tales of love lost and found into your lives. So I just kept writing them.¨

2021 by Ian Greenland
Congratulations! You made it. Unless you’re me (you can’t be; I am), our creative director, editor, printers or distributions team (Put the cigarette out and get back to work you lazy... ok, ok, finish the cigarette.... yes, ok, finish the beer too...No, don’t get anoth.... Ok, that’s the last one...why are you going into the casino..?), if you’re reading this, that means it’s now 2021!!! (Cue imaginary fireworks!) Barring the ridiculous, but let’s face it, frankly distinct possibility 2020 has refused to concede its own demise to the incoming year (likely spouting about an obvious conspiracy between the Sun and Earth sun to tamper with the astrological cycles), we should be firmly in January now.
sounding, T-shirt friendly name full of innate optimism and possibility: “2020 / twenty-twenty / 20-twenty / twenty-20/... 2wenty2wenty...”
“2020” would have sounded right as the year we colonised Mars, solved the climate crisis, eradicated cancer or at the very least got the fucking hoverboards we were told we’d all be riding within a decade of Back to the Future 2’s release (1989). Instead, it was the year children were barred from playgrounds and we ran out of toilet paper. Awesome.
2021 will see the first female vicepresident of the United States, a person of colour elected just months after tear gas was ordered fired upon peaceful Like the flavoured, fortified wine of the BLM protesters by the incumbent POS. same name rife when The Black Lives Matter movement has become I was a teen spending FINALLY PUTTING a global rallying cry Friday nights getting 2020 TO BED (THEN drunk in the very which has finally gotten SMOTHERING THE many to acknowledge playgrounds whose BASTARD WITH A closure our kids would and address their own PILLOW) WILL BE privilege, ascribed through lament 25 years later, centuries of systemic 2020 has caused a PSYCHOLOGICALLY whole lot of headaches racism. Others just shout CATHARTIC FOR and left a thoroughly MILLIONS OF PEOPLE. “ALL lives matter” and kind bad taste in the mouth. of miss the point (wilfully Granted it’s probably or otherwise) but then not responsible for less bouts of chlamydia everyone’s cooking with a real oven. than the drink was (you generally have Regardless, like the #MeToo movement to come within two metres of another which proceeded it, #BLM seems human being to get chlamydia) but to have focussed attention around that’s not exactly a ringing endorsement widespread, critical injustice and that’s of an otherwise total A-hole of a year. cause for real celebration going forward.
It’s potentially too early to assume 2021 will be any better. In lieu of the “oven ready” Brexit deal the government promised, (The deal may have been oven-ready but it turns out the oven was a Fisher-Price oven. A broken old Fisher-Price oven held together with cobwebs and dreams. And on closer inspection, the Fisher-Price oven wasn’t actually a Fisher-Price oven but a sad, buck-toothed kid who wasn’t allowed on some swings, holding a magnifying glass up to the sun... but the sun had pissed off elsewhere because it was part of a liberal conspiracy to... look, there was no fucking deal ... THE SANE WORLD ok!!?) we’ve WELCOMES A NEW US now been PRESIDENT WHO SIMPLY reassured Navy HAS TO NOT SEXUALLY warships will be patrolling our ASSAULT SCORES OF fishing waters, WOMEN (AND BRAG so look forward ABOUT IT) BETWEEN NOW to escalating AND HIS INAUGURATION tensions TO BE AN IMPROVEMENT leading to all ON THE CURRENT POTUS out nuclear (REMOVE THE T AND U war with FOR A MORE APPROPRIATE Europe over a ACRONYM). bit of cod...
Ok, time to take a collective, reflective breath... WOW, last year SUUUUUUCKED!! It should have been a blinder. It had all the natural advantages – a calamitous, politically and culturally divisive few years of Brexity, Trumpian, Russian meddling, Amazon burning madness proceeded it, like the loud, obnoxious first act at a standup club which makes the audience particularly grateful and forgiving of whatever follows. Aesthetically, it had the goods; A catchy, futuristic-
Nevertheless, there are several reasons to be optimistic about the future and whilst we’re not out of the woods on a host of huge issues, finally putting 2020

to bed (then smothering the bastard with a pillow) will be psychologically cathartic for millions of people. Covid vaccinations have already begun in earnest and the sane world welcomes a new US president who simply has to not sexually assault scores of women (and brag about it) between now and his inauguration to be an improvement on the current POTUS (Remove the T and U for a more appropriate acronym).
President elect Biden’s assertion that America will rejoin the Paris climate agreement is further reason to rejoice for anyone not wearing a tinfoil hat (or MAGA one). In contrast to its more ignominious achievements, 2020 was notable as the year renewable energy overtook crude oil on the stock exchange as wind and solar power generator NextEra Energy Inc. eclipsed Exxon Mobil (formerly the world’s largest public company) in value. The fallout of the pandemic and the seismic shift it caused in our working and social
habits reduced global demand for oil by some 20% last year. Millions of businesses all over the world have streamlined operations and adapted to remote working, shuttering offices and vastly reducing their physical and carbon footprints. Families have spent more time together than ever before, in some cases voluntarily. For every stircrazy couple who’ve nearly killed each other at dinner, two have deepened their bond over a Joe Wicks workout. For each parent who’s wanted to cuff their teen whilst home-schooling, many more have grown closer whilst exploring new country walks together or redecorating the house.
little kinder, more conscious and appreciative than the former “normal” - expect close proximity parties that’ll blow your average December 31st out the water (like a Navy gunship “Getting Brexit done” on a Greek trawler). Expect widespread dancing, singing, hugging and kissing.... And chlamydia. A WHOLE lot of chlamydia.
Despite the economic hardships, foodbanks have seen huge levels of donations. Community outreach, social activism and neighbourly goodwill are through the roof. Countless people, myself included have reconnected with estranged friends and family. It took the isolating fallout of a virus to remind us in many cases just how good a job we were already doing of isolating ourselves from our fellow #BLM seems to humans. Through adversity, have focussed we’ve got to know ourselves attention around and our loved ones better than widespread, ever before. Nevertheless, I’d say we’re all ready for this new year and when things finally return to normal - hopefully something a
critical injustice and that’s cause for real celebration going forward.

anuary can present itself with a whole new world of wonder, but at the very same time countless people struggle with the post-holiday blues, financial strain, stress, anxiety and depression. This isn’t supposed to make you feel worse, we just wanted to give you a little New-Year gift - a surefire way to lift the spirits and re-centre you for the year ahead. This is something you can do every day, it is completely free, and only takes about twenty minutes of your time. The brain-fog associated with the New Year is widespread, we may have notions of grand resolutions but we may also be struggling with the motivation to get them started or the reality of all the obstacles our typical daily life has to offer. In short, life is full and it isn’t always easy to find a path or orderly way of managing it. One way we can help ourselves to clear that fog is to practice what is commonly known as mindfulness. For some this can sound frivolous or a waste of time, but actually it is well proven that being mindful can help us achieve focus, concentration and improve performance. But I am not
36
here to convert you all into gurus, I am just offering a small yet delightful way to de-cobweb yourself and give you the ammunition to face each day like you mean it - interested? Read on… We all feel energy, it is a real thing, it runs through us alongside the blood that pumps through our veins, it is in every single cell. It is also all around us in everything that exists, including the ground we walk on. To really get in touch with the ground is to connect ourselves with the world and everything that is natural. ‘Earthing’ is a concept whereby we do exactly that, get in touch with the world beneath our feet. The earth has an endless supply of energy which, if we connect with it, we can allow to be absorbed by our own bodies. How does that help anyone? Well, if you consider that all electrical circuits need to be earthed in order to neutralise the electrical potential running through them, then why wouldn’t the earth have the same effect on us? Well, countless researchers are in agreement that it does. However, there is a big protocol when it comes to accessing
that power, and that comes in the form of being barefoot. We need to remove those protective layers that we call shoes and socks in order to tap into the natural energy that runs beneath us; thus allowing ourselves to become conductors.
“Our innate immune systems use white blood cells (known as neutrophils) to release reactive oxygen molecules (commonly known as free radicals) to oxidise and destroy pathogens and damaged cells. Free radicals have an electron imbalance that makes them electrically charged—in their quest to find a free electron and neutralise, they can attach to, or steal an electron, from a healthy cell, damaging it in the process. The damaged cell then needs to be removed, and the immune system sends another neutrophil to process it, starting the entire cycle over again. This is how chronic inflammation (which causes chronic pain and promotes many health disorders) is set in motion. This entire response is compounded by
far bigger and greater than being in a human race. Letting those electrons flow between us and the earth can have some major (or subtle) effects on us that we may not even realise are possible. For example; the easing of chronic pain, reduction of symptoms of inflammationrelated issues, improvement in sleep quality, boosting of energy, reduction of stress and anxiety, improvement in blood flow, relief of tension, easing of muscle aches, regulation of hormones, improvement in recovery time from injury. Sound good? Well it couldn’t be easier or simpler to achieve… How do we go about ‘earthing’? It is as straightforward as finding a natural surface; a sandy or pebbly beach, natural earth, grass, stone, or anything that is not man-made or purposelyplaced by humans, taking off our shoes and walk around barefoot on it (or stand still if you prefer) for about twenty minutes a day. I prefer to do this first thing in the morning, before work, before commencing the battle of the day. I grab a cup of take-away tea and stroll along the beach with my feet in the water (the more elements the better) and literally clear the clutter of the mind, allowing thoughts to flow in and out until I get a moment when it is just quiet and I can focus on the natural stuff; the air,
the wind, the sea, the sun, the sky, the ground, the water; all these natural elements that are literally surrounding me and are full to the brim with energy. I tap into that and take some for myself, thank you very much planet earth and mother nature, I think I have enough to complete this day with gumption, and see you tomorrow for some more. Endless energy on tap, it’s yours for the taking! Any time spent connected with the earth is positive time that can make you feel more balanced and centred as well as motivated, uplifted, and inspired. One study specifically suggests that earthing with a particular goal is a great way to monitor the results; start your session with something in mind such as any difficulties you may be experiencing or stress or tension you may be feeling that you would like to relieve, and, once you’ve completed your earthing practice, check in as to whether you feel any relief. If you struggle to find the time for this and your daily exercise, why not combine the two? A good old stretch on the grass can combine a short yoga practice with your mental rebalancing and physical energising for the day. So why not give it a go? Get those toes back in nature and let the electrons flow!
the fact that free radical-generating substances are present all around us: in fried food, alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides, air pollutants, and even the sun’s rays. The earth has an infinite supply of free electrons, so when a person is grounded, those electrons naturally flow between the earth and the body, reducing free radicals and eliminating any static electrical charge. The reason grounding is so powerful is it reduces and prevents inflammation from occurring in the body, which in turn prevents inflammation-related health disorders”, says Clint Ober, an earthing specialist who has dedicated the past seventeen years unearthing the power of grounding on the human body. If you understood or managed to get through all that then you may have an idea of what I am getting at! Basically we are embracing a connection with our earth, and using it to pass energy between it and our own little human being. We are often neglectful to recognise our position on this earth, and that we are a part of something

HOW TO MAKE YOUR GOALS A REALITY IN 2021 It’s fair to say that 2020 wasn’t the year we expected, and a lot of our plans and goals were derailed by outside forces. Like it or not, the current situation isn’t looking like it’s going to be short term, so it’s time to stop using pandemic restrictions as an excuse to not go for your personal goals. It’s human nature to make excuses, so firstly, be compassionate with yourself. The phrase “unprecedented times” must be one of the most overused of the last year, but we’ve had time to adjust now. If you made excuses, delayed your goals, then that’s understandable, but there’s a terrifying statistic that when we put off change and tackling goals, it sets us up for almost certain failure. In fact some research puts the chances of failure as high as 93% when we consistently delay going for what we want.
LESS THAN 10% OF US S T I C K TO O U R N E W YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Listen, if you’re serious about making change in any area of your life, it’s never about tomorrow. It’s about the choices you make now and day to day that really count.

We’re conditioned to believe that we should be taking huge leaps forward, that overnight success could be just around the corner. That is so rarely the case. Real success in anything comes from taking consistent steps taken every day. Persistence and consistence wins the day. When we expect big results in super fast time from anything, we’re priming ourselves for disappointment, which in turn makes us less likely to be bold in the future. Success comes from responsibility for our decisions, our actions, our thoughts
40
and our beliefs. Once we can accept that, we can change them to allow ourselves to move forward. One big lesson from the last year is that we have the power to CHOOSE how we think about and react to everything. There is so much out of our control and our job is how to choose we react to external factors, and focus on the things we can change. When we focus on what’s within our control, it’s amazing how empowered we become, regardless of what else is going on in the world.
So, have a think about 2020… Did I achieve my goals? What worked well? What didn’t work for me? What do I want to accomplish this year? Often in life we’ll overestimate the cost of failure, underestimate the value of success and completely disregard the opportunity cost of staying stuck where we are. Imagine your life 6 months or a year from now. What if nothing changes? Your body, your health, your work, relationships, how you spend your time, your finances…
How would that make you feel?
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS IN 2021: • Don’t try to do too much. Get clear on one major realistic goal you’d love to achieve (when we have a goal with an emotional attachment which much more likely to succeed) • Break that goal down into smaller steps. Too often the scale of the task can overwhelm us. Instead break the big goal down into chunks you can achieve in two weeks. • Next, plan and prioritise how and when you’re going to achieve it. Too many people get as far as breaking it down but then fail to actually plan the time into their schedule to achieve the steps. • Do the mental reps to bring your mind on board. Spend time each week visualising your goals and connecting with the emotion of achieving it. Celebrate the small wins, and use affirmations that support your beliefs in achieving what you’ve set out to do. • Get accountability. Either a friend, a group, a coach or a mentor. Someone that can support and guide you when the going gets tough, that you feel you need to show up for, that’s invested in your journey. • Give yourself permission. This might sound strange but many of us don’t actually give ourselves permission to go for our goals. Failing to do this can show up in prioritising others first and putting our dreams on the back burner. • Have fun. It needs to be enjoyable. Keep the destination in mind but enjoy the journey.

DETOXING OUR MIND AND BODIES
WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR
ELITE CBD
A FRESH START with an open mind!
Woop Woop 2020 is finally over and we can look forward to a more promising 2021, as nothing prepared us for what we incurred! Now we have the chance to readdress some issues. Previously a world of government restrictions and penalties were only for people who choose to break the law, but this year anyone was at risk of accidentally breaking rules as the public patiently waited for instructions, to somehow prevent the entire world from catching the virus they called Covid-19. The worst I believe is over as we are now seeing the world with a new found appreciation for its true beauty and of course our freedom. I am feeling extremely blessed and grateful that no one I know has become seriously ill, that I still have a business, and that I am actually helping more people than before. Through the madness of 2020 no one went without suffering and I have been made even more aware of the necessity of cannabinoid based medicine to help heal the many health and environmental problems that the world is suffering from. Through the use of plant based medicine and natural healing practices, I believe that we can truly help the public and local community through theses difficult times. Let’s encourage laughter and smiling faces again! So what is CBD and why is it good for our health
CBD is just one of the 152 cannabinoids found in the Hemp plant. This is a non addictive and non psychoactive substance that can be used to help treat a wide range of health issues. It is closely related to the other well known compound in the plant THC. The phytocannabinoids in the hemp plant respond to our endocannabinoid system reacting to our neuron transmitters CB1 and CB2 that are present in our central nervous system, these activate the compounds anandamide and 2AEG that we naturally produce in order to respond to stress, illness and injury. These cannabinoids

work with our own system creating proteins which are vital for our bodies function. The plant adapts to each individual uniquely infiltrating it to bring us into homeostasis and find our point of balance.

SO HOW DOES CBD HELP?
MASSAGE’S FOR DETOX
Eliminating toxins and external pressures have never been so important, we need to take responsibility and empower ourselves by taking control of what we can, and that is our health. We need to address the importance of keeping an active body and mind. With more people staying home, worrying and eating unhealthy foods, detoxing has never been so vital to help improve health. Using CBD can naturally help detoxify the body as the plant is a remediation plant (it naturally cleans the soil) and it helps clear the toxins in our body too. As it works with our receptors it can also help us remove stress and reduce anxiety, this helps detox the mind of unnecessary stressful thoughts. If we start to focus on more positive times ahead it can help rejuvenate the system.
Massage therapies are a great way to unwind and relax. Magdalena at Aaura in Marbella is an expert in releasing toxins through her massage therapies, carefully evaluating each individual to find out what will be more beneficial. Detoxing with the use of massage can’t really get any better as its perfect for stimulating the receptors in the skin. If you choose to get a rub by your loved one, or book a professional massage it works just try it!
CBD is also a potent antioxidant as it goes a step a step further than just food and exercise and has shown in studies to reduce cell death. Because of CBD oil’s protective effects in the body, it reduces inflammation whilst protecting the cells. CBD oil is able to indirectly stimulate the receptors to help mediate your immune functions and helps regulate the system therefore helping to speed up your metabolism and improve overall health. Fabulous for assisting with detoxing!
How are you us ing your TIME?
Detoxing with EXERCISE
Yoga is one of my favourite forms of exercises as it really makes you focus inwards. When using CBD alongside these activities it truly helps to realign and find the essential balance. Daily exercise is really essential as it activates the muscles and release toxins in a natural way. Through movement and perspiration, the body releases the toxins that it doesn’t need! It´s also important to then replace lost fluids with water. By adding a drop of CBD to your routine you can find that it can regenerate and repair the body quicker. My other favourite activities would also include walking in the mountains or by the sea to help stimulate my cannabinoids in a positive way, breathing fresh air is vitally important for a healthy immune system and active mind!
The TLE angels are here to help you detox!!!
We are here to help you realign your senses and help you to connect your body and mind. Detoxing is a great way to feel good and we all need some extra love at the moment. Happy New Year
W
ell, what a different Christmas and New Year it turned out to be. Quoting Candian Robin Sharma “Change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end” - is that not our 2020? For me it ended up with a gorgeous end of the year completely out of my comfort zone as my normal traditions changed, however I must say I had a lovely time. Maybe 2020 gave us time to change our ways somewhat appreciating company of family and friends more, slowing down making “less-is-more” the new black. As my 94-year-old father, who sadly I have not been able to visit in 2020, said; “the atmosphere of 2020 was a bit like during the Second World War with curfews, restrictions and absence from family and friends”. We have
52
had time to evaluate life appreciating normality and freedom of movement, so facing 2021 I am so very positive of an exciting year ahead. What will it bring? My Christmas cracker did not predict but my positive attitude tells me fabulous sunny times in Marbella, work back to normality, continuation of my TV shows and travel – how we miss travelling to visit family, friends and new destinations. Happy days as light so near at the end of the tunnel. info@internationalmarbella.com

Keep it Real
WHAT’S IT LIKE TO LIVE IN A SU S TAI N AB L E H OM E ? by Vivion O’Kelly
TH E B ENEF I T S OF SUSTAI NAB I L I T Y Sustainable living means a great deal to us, although we may not know it. After all, a large part of the benefits of sustainable living is not to have to think about it at all. At its most basic, it means peace of mind, healthy living and the comforting assurance that the environment we choose to live in will not be put at risk in any way by our choice. So how do we know what’s sustainable and what’s not? Well, one way is to have your home checked out by one of the world’s leading sustainability assessment groups, of which BREEAM is the world leader. Or to purchase a home that has already been assessed by BREEAM. BREEAM provides third party certification of the sustainability of buildings and infrastructure projects, and is, in fact, an acronym of a group of words that mean little to most of us, but a great deal to those of us who have the good fortune to live in a BREEAM certified home. And if you must know (but feel free to forget), the acronym derives from Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method.
54
To be more specific about it might be pedantic, so to put it in practical terms, a BREEAM certificate is a guarantee of good living in every sense of the word. Good, because it’s good for the environment on many different levels, good for your health and safety and good for your peace of mind. Good, because it cuts water usage and waste, running and maintenance costs and electricity use, vastly reducing carbon emissions. Good, because it tackles pollution in very concrete ways, ensuring that your natural surroundings stay open and natural, allowing you to hear the song birds throughout the day and see the stars throughout the night. Good, because it makes you feel good. In short, a BREEAM certificate gives you confidence in a sustainable way of life, now and tomorrow. Buildings are BREEAM rated and certified on a scale of Pass, Good, Very Good,
Excellent and Outstanding, and up to the present date, more than 550,000 buildings have been BREEAM certified, with more than two million having been registered for certification in excess of 70 countries throughout the world. BREEAM is especially relevant now, in light of
Keep it Real
the new rules on sustainability from the European Union, which are stricter than ever before. Given that buildings and their construction together account for 36% of global energy use and 39% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions annually (a lot more than cars), according to the United Nations Environment Program, sustainability is an ethos to be proud of.
WH AT A B O U T THE C O S TS ? Contrary to popular perception, sustainable buildings are not significantly more expensive to design and build than those that simply adhere to regulatory requirements. Reputable research show that sustainable options often add little or no capital cost to a development project, and where certain costs are incurred, they will most likely be paid back through lower running and maintenance costs. There is also growing evidence that BREEAM rated buildings, apart from increasing overall value, also provide increased rates of return for investors and increased rental rates.

Keep it Real
B RE E A M C E RT IFIED P ROP E RTI E S A R E ATTR AC TIV E T O I N V E STO R S BREEAM was launched in 1990, and over the past 30 years it has become an internationally recognized and robust standard of sustainability excellence. It helps its clients during the planning, design and construction processes, using independent auditors to ensure that, both at the end of the design stage and on completion of construction, the standards of the scheme have been met. The result is that a BREEAM certified building will be fully sustainable, respectful of the environment and all natural resources, and make a property – already enhanced by having conformed to BREEAM standards – all the more attractive to investors. The scheme uses a worldwide network of experts in their respective fields and adapts its conditions to local and climatic conditions, raising awareness among owners and designers of the benefits of taking a sustainable approach and helping them to successfully adopt sustainable solutions in a cost-effective manner.
BREEAM rated buildings, apart from increasing overall value, also provide increased rates of return for investors and increased rental rates.
P EA C E O F M I ND In the final analysis, as we said at the start, it’s a question of peace of mind. Anybody who can afford a luxury home in the Marbella area will not be overly concerned with the relatively small increase in initial purchase price that adhesion to BREEAM regulations may – or may not – incur. They might not lose sleep over just how well their building stands up to the ravages of time, and few new potential owners will boast to their cocktail party guests about the

finer technical details of a BREEAM certificate. But they will certainly wish to live in a house whose sustainability and respect for the environment is fully guaranteed, because that is the very reason they have chosen to live in such a privileged environment in the first place.
Keep it Real
B R I G H T I S A TR A I L B LA Z E R The develoment company BRIGHT have led the way on the Costa del Sol with regards to sustainable luxury homes, first with their awardwinning Villa Alcuzcuz which is the first luxury villa in Marbella to be built under Passive House Regulations and standards. The villa uses a fraction of the energy of a normal standard build home with energy costs reduced by a massive 75%. Now, with regard to their new development Vista Lago Residences, a BREEAM certificate has been applied for, in full confidence that their final rating will validate the enormous effort and innovation gone into ensuring the maximum sustainability of the entire project. In fact, the 200 hectare Real de La Quinta development, which Vista Lago Residences is part of, was the first infrastructure planning project in Spain to obtain a BREEAM certificate. It is not for nothing that a core principal of BRIGHT, whose ethos is sustainability, is “building for today without endangering tomorrow.” Every home in Vista Lago, inside and out, is designed in such a way to maximise the health and wellbeing of its occupants. Owners can choose to have organic vegetable plots in their gardens, mini orchards and kitchen herb gardens. With charging points for electric cars, and pollution from light, noise and emissions dramatically reduced, a luxurious yet completely sustainable lifestyle can be fully realised. HOUSE OF
B E AUTY by Vivion O’Kelly, Images courtesy of UDesign
Some houses are so unlike anything we’ve seen before, so extraordinarily beautiful, that they could, with a forgivable amount of hyperbole, be called works of art. UDesign show us around their latest creation.

The Entrance
A
great hotel, a great building, a great art gallery, a great anything, makes us stop for a moment and reflect on its beauty, however that beauty might be expressed. It may be muted or spectacular, or it may be partially hidden behind an initial impression of ordinariness. No matter. It stops us in our tracks and makes us admire. Aesthetics is a universal value, and we have attempted to design a home that is universally beautiful, inside and out, in its architecture and in its interior design, and in everything one finds inside it. We think we have succeeded. That is not to say that many other homes, designed by us and by other architects, are not exceptional in their aesthetics. What make this different is that we have designed every detail of it and what it contains as a complete and integrated work of art. We call it the House of Beauty.
The beauty starts at the entrance, naturally, but this is really a kind of hors d’oeuvre to the full-course interior. Our first view of the villa might have reminded us of Philip Johnson’s famous Glass House, but more liveable-in and vastly more user-friendly. If Johnson had designed his house in Marbella, he might well have added a swimming pool or two, and extended on both sides to accommodate a large family or owner who likes to entertain. We walk inside from a garden to a garden, which is to say, the garden is also inside the house, on both sides as one walks through the main entrance. The delightful difficulty here is not knowing exactly where the garden ends
and the interior begins, because we designed it true to our concept of warmweather residential architecture: inside/ outside design. One is never quite sure exactly which is which. We also designed it wide and long, so more rooms enjoy the views, and this is one of the key aspects of this symmetrical, largely transparent property. It is not immediately obvious that there is an upper pool behind the long white wall over the lower pool: they are really one, given that the water from the top pool cascades down into the one below. It would be more accurately described as a split-level pool. The palm trees on both sides help create the impression of an avenue to welcome us in from the garden, while the low, square island-like structures at each end are floating, illuminated seats around miniature ecosystems of giant bonsai trees and grass.
63
Home Coture
But beautiful as the villa is under the clear light of day, the real magic happens at night, when the lights go on. Light is a medium by which art is created, and we have used it here as a kind of light installation, picking out aspects of the building and its immediate surroundings to create the ambiance we sought – warm, inviting and aesthetically satisfying.
T he L o u ng e The lounge may indeed be a place for lounging in, but it’s a lot more than that. It’s a kind of multi-discipline art gallery, showing works on the walls, hanging from the ceiling, on the floor, in the garden, all around us, even in the pieces of furniture themselves, whose unique design qualifies them as sculpture. Look at the hanging lights and see an autumn breeze, look at the sofa and see a cuddly purple monster you can sink into, which is also a wonderful work of soft abstract sculpture, reminiscent of a piece by Claes Oldenburg. Look at the floating stairway cutting through the wall, splattered with giant blobs of gold and silver coloured mercury. And
64
if we prefer our art as a more traditional single framed piece, there it is, right in the middle: a beautiful image by Tim Tadder from his latest collection “Black is a Colour”.
The garden plan is difficult to describe in words, because it’s almost everywhere. It encroaches on the interior from all directions, and looking outwards, one
sees sculptural animals inhabiting a space that could be inside or out. It has, of course, been designed that way, showing us that in this villa, the line between inside and out is beautifully blurred. The light here also works as sculpture, picking out the various pieces day and night as the natural light changes.
The D i ni ng Room Open the door to the dining room and shut it behind you: no, in this home you move from one area to another without opening and shutting interior doors. And you also do it without really leaving the garden, because nature is all around you. The dining room table and chairs are low and minimalist, to take full advantage of the view through the window. All the spaces in this house are interactive, all constituting a bigger entity. Dining here, one has a view of the sea on one side and the illuminated garden on the other, and one dines here comfortably, on seats that are part armchair, part dining chair, ideally suited for long after-dinner conversation.

L ight i s a medium by wh ich a r t i s created, a nd we h ave u se d i t here a s a kin d o f l ig ht i nsta l l ation. The wall divider on one side looks like a cross between a Rorschach ink-blob test and the dried skin of some very exotic animal, but it is, in fact, four pieces of onyx mounted together. The effect is mesmerising. Facing this, on the other side, is a round painting that has been illuminated to work as a soft light source. The huge rock in the garden becomes an integral part of an overall muted design, the gorilla providing the splash of colour needed.
T he Ki tche n To the left of the dining space we have the top-end kitchen, which is a single, elegant entity in grained onyx. The Art Deco lamps fit in perfectly with the symmetry of the kitchen, as do the five armchair-style high stools. The long dark glass unit over the sink holds the cupboards, with the fridge and freezer behind the tall doors adjacent to it. But more than a kitchen, it extends back into a family living space with easy seating that all great kitchens should have. This seating comprises four armchairs around a table overlooking the entrance to the villa and the pool below, and an overhead lamp designed as a piece of neon art.

The view across this space shows four large wine display cabinets, divided in the middle by an antique-framed modern painting. Looking back towards the kitchen from the family space, we can see that the entire area is visually one. This would not have been possible in a traditional kitchen, and works only because of its exquisite design.

emperor of taste king of vodka We attended… the launch of Nero Vodka at the Puente Romano Hotel; a new vodka made of nothing but 100% British potatoes (instead of grain) and no added sweeteners or additives.
We learnt... Nero Premium Vodka shares its name with the fifth Emperor of the Roman empire, Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus, who accepted nothing but excellence. We also learnt that at the heart of the hotel complex lies an authentic Roman Bridge, a vestige of the Roman road linking Rome and Cádiz, making it an ideal setting for the launch.
We enjoyed… the smooth, velvety taste of the vodka, which happens to have less calories than a glass of white wine or gin. Plus, it’s sugar and gluten free! The roman themed evening ran seamlessly thanks to Puente Romano’s top-notch team and the entertainment surpassed all expectations: dancers, acrobats, fire shows and the incredible violinist, Quike Navarro.
Congratulations and a big thanks to… Nero Drinks Company’s CEO Nicola Morrissey. Wishing you continued success on this exciting journey.

Soho comes to Guadalmina We attended… the launch of Soho market, a new concept in Guadalmina shopping centre that is giving small business owners a way back onto the high street at a fraction of the cost. The market style layout allows local small brands and retailers to showcase their products in a chic new environment offering a food truck, champagne bar, flower stall and even a recreational area for kids to play.
We enjoyed… the multitude of shops within Soho market including a children’s clothing outlet, a homeware and decoration shop, a London gift shop, a jewelry shop, a delicatessen, a beautician and many more.
We dined on… nibbles from the quirky food truck whilst browsing everything on offer. The kid’s area in particular deserves a special mention as it is aimed at kids from 7 years old and up, making it the first of its kind in the area.
Congratulations and a big thanks to… owner and operator, Lara Gonzalez and all the participating businesses and ‘mumpreneurs.’

Humble Cabbage
As we enter the winter months, we start to enjoy the more wintery vegetables such as the cabbage. The beautiful cabbage comes in all types of sizes and colours and has earned an unwarranted reputation for not being easy to cook with. Often found in veggie boxes at this time of year, it’s a great ingredient to cook with – when done right. Cabbage is best during the month of October. Look for compact, heavy heads with no brown or wilting leaves. Think bigger than just stuffed cabbage and coleslaw! Cabbage can also be roasted. I like to roast it slow and low – and raw, it can even be made into a delicious kimchi. Eating more cabbage is an excellent way to keep your digestive system healthy and happy. That’s because it contains insoluble fiber, which fuels friendly bacteria and promotes regular movements down under! I have some great recipes in the 7 Day Vegan Challenge that includes cabbage as the hero ingredient. Whether you’re attempting to go veggie or just increase your plant intake - it’s a great book to give you some inspiration on the way!
Cabbage top tips
One of the most common issues around cooking and eating cabbage is that it can cause gas. A way of minimising that is to add a few whole cloves to your boiling water, or if appropriate, to the dish itself. Other sweet spices that have the same effect include allspice, cinnamon, fenugreek, cumin and ginger.

i h c Kim
Kimchi is a great way of incorporating cabbage into your life, and it’s super-friendly for your gut. Kimchi is a fermented cabbage or vegetable that’s traditionally flavoured with many ingredients. Korea has hundreds of versions of this dish, but this is my simple plant-based version with a kick! You can vary how much garlic, chilli and ginger you add. I personally prefer my kimchi more gingery than garlicky. Makes 1 x small or medium jar (depending on the size of your cabbage) 1 tablespoon salt 1/2 head green cabbage, thinly sliced 1/4 head red cabbage, thinly sliced 1 carrot, finely chopped lengthwise 1/2 red (bell) pepper, finely chopped For the flavouring paste 1/2 red (bell) pepper, deseeded and chopped 1 tablespoon minced ginger 1/2 tablespoon minced garlic 1 green spring onion (scallion) 1 red chilli Pinch of pink Himalayan salt
Method Massage the salt into the cabbage slices until they start releasing liquid. This liquid is what you will eventually be using as your brine to ferment the kimchi. In a blender (or using a pestle and mortar), combine all the flavouring ingredients into a paste. Check on your massaged cabbage and make sure it’s released enough liquid. Gently massage the paste into the cabbage, chop finely, add the carrot and pepper and transfer to a clean, large glass jar with a lid. Make sure you press the cabbage into the jar properly so that it is covered by the cabbage liquid. It is very important that all the veggies are covered with a sufficient amount of brine and pressed down properly. Leave the jar to sit at room temperature for at least 2–3 days, opening up and ‘burping’ the kimchi at least once a day. After 2–3 days, the kimchi is ready to eat and can be refrigerated until needed. The fermentation will still continue in the fridge, but at a much slower rate. The longer the kimchi sits and ferments, the more flavourful it becomes. Finally, always use clean utensils when dipping into kimchi, to avoid contamination.

Bespoke Craftsmanship ¨I have a wide selection of European hardwoods in my workshop and storage, mainly working with Oak, Ash, European and Black Walnut. They all have such different characteristics from colour to thickness etc. Depending on clients wishes, we choose the material together, the size of the table and what kind of legs are best (wood or metal). I generally have a vision in my mind as soon as a client describes their wish for a bespoke table. It’s all very personal and no two tables are the same,¨ shared owner of CR Furniture, Chris Rea.
Ranging from small coffee tables to elegant large dining tables as well as chunky live edge exterior tables, Chris can create almost any requirement. He also works a lot with epoxy resin (a liquid material, that hardens, looking like glass but is almost impossible to break). This can be clear or any colour desired and is becoming more popular in the carpentry world as allows to make very unique custom furniture. ¨I use only the best quality finishes for my pieces, using oils that are completely natural (eco) and food friendly, with no added chemicals,¨ concluded Chris. www.CR-Furniture.es
Acompaño a mi sombra Jesús Chacón’s exhibition “Acompaño a mi sombra” at Eldevenir Art Gallery is a condensed retrospective composed of 15 black and white and colour photographs that brings together the significant works of Chacón’s production from 1999 to 2020. Chacón began working as a professional photographer in fashion and advertising at the end of the 1990s, while moving away from that facet, he consolidated his most personal projects within the art scene. This exhibition precisely begins with one of his first works, “Kabylia”, a photomosaic with surrealist overtones, where one can already intuit some of the central themes in his work: the perception of space through the lens, the human being as the axis of key questions, as well as the break with the single
84
moment to offer suggestions to the viewer in order to build their own narrative. Throughout two decades, Chacón has produced a very interesting body of work, where the viewer can simply delight in contemplating him as exquisitely made photographs; but at the same time he confronts him with questioning himself as an individual, about his relationship with the city and with technology, in addition to suggesting that he become a more active spectator
complementing the stories that he subtly outlines with his photographs. Visit the exhibition until February 14th Av. Isaac Albéniz, 3, 29793 Torrox, Málaga www.eldevenirartgallery.com www.jesuschacon.com
Rags to Riches a fairytale ending for a rescue horse ARCH, the Andalusian Rescue Centre for Horses and Donkeys, has been saving animals from abuse, abandonment and neglect for almost 12 years. This year has been particularly challenging and, with fund-raising events mainly cancelled, the charity is relying heavily on the generosity of their supporters. Among these are Victoria and Cristina Iglesias, long-time horse lovers and proficient horsewomen. By a strange coincidence, the twins first heard about ARCH through contacts in New York, although the family has a house near Marbella. On returning to Spain, they arranged a visit to the rescue centre in Alhaurin el Grande, since then they have been enthusiastic followers and generous donors. This year the girls went one step further, offering to foster one of the rescues over the summer, to order to help train her with a view to finding her a permanent home. The horse they chose, a 12- year-old mare known as Moni, had been at the Centre for several months. Neglected and virtually abandoned, she was tied to a tree on waste ground near Malaga. She was also heavily
pregnant. and as the weather worsened, she gave birth to a small colt foal in torrential rain. A concerned local animal lover had already approached ARCH and as and there was no sign of any owner – the mare had no microchip – it was urgent to get SEPRONA (the animal welfare arm of the Guardia Civil) involved. Almost exactly a year ago, Moni and her two-day-old baby (named Lucky by the man who had found them) arrived at the Centre to a warm stable, food and veterinary attention. Mother and baby thrived over the months that followed and once Lucky was weaned ARCH were looking to rehome Moni, who needed to regain her figure and fitness after maternity leave. So, she went to the Iglesias stables where the girls gave her care and attention and started to ride her. They fell in love with her gentle and sensitive nature and also discovered that she had a talent for jumping. It was not long before they decided to keep her! Renamed Zaza, she is now enjoying a life of luxury in surroundings that could not be more different from her earlier experiences. Cristina and Victoria continue to keep ARCH up to date with Zaza’s progress and volunteers are hoping that they will be able to visit their very own Cinderella once life becomes safer and less restricted. You can read about Zaza, Lucky and all the other ARCH rescues on their website: www.horserescuespain.org and on their Facebook page Centro Andalusi de Rescate de Caballos (the charity’s registered name in Spain).
Engel & Völkers Marbella donates 9 tons of food to Cáritas Marbella for the most vulnerable families
The real estate agency does its part to show thanks for the support received by the city over the years. Feelings of community emerge in times of crisis such as the one generated by Covid-19, which makes companies more aware of the problems suffered by many of the residents of their community. To try to alleviate this lack of resources and return part of the support provided to society, Engel & Völkers Marbella created a solidarity initiative to distribute nine tons of non-perishable food among disadvantaged families in Marbella. The delivery of the solidarity boxes to Cáritas took place at the Church of the Incarnation in an act in which the councillor for Social Affairs at the Marbella Town Hall, Isabel Cintado; the delegate of resident foreigners, Remedios Bocanegra; the delegate of Social Policies in San Pedro Alcántara, Begoña Rueda, and Mercedes Agüera, representative of Cáritas, were together with the parish priest of the Iglesia de la Encarnación, José Sánchez, and the managing director of E&V Marbella, Smadar Kahana.
