ave you made any New Year resolutions yet? If you haven’t, then you have come to the right place, since if you plan to spend more time with your family and friends or treat yourself to more ‘me’ time (I think that that’s what you girls call it, anyway!), we have some excellent suggestions about where to go and what to do.

If you favour the philosophy of ‘New Year, New Me’ then we are delighted to point you in the direction of Aesthetics Solutions Spain, a brand new clinic which can remove unsightly skin pigmentation, scars, burn marks and also offers hair transplants, permanent make-up and the Vampire Facial. This is apparently THE beauty treatment of the moment and is reviewed in our beauty section. We have heard only good things about this super luxurious clinic and are impressed by the dedication of co-owner. Lisa, who keeps up with all the latest trends and flies to America in order to train beauty technicians in the procedures she performs. You will be able to read more about this great new clinic in forthcoming issues, including news of their launch party, so watch this space! Talking of beauty treatments, Cheryl Cole – sorry, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini – is this month’s cover girl and kicks 2015 off in style. Unbelievably (where does the time go – I must be getting old!), she has just released her fourth solo album, Only Human, which has already being making its mark on the charts and with her new marriage and her return to that old TV warhorse, X Factor, she is once again the woman of the moment. It just goes to prove that showbiz – like football – is a funny old game. It seems that only yesterday she was being humiliated by being dropped from the US version of X Factor and going through a very messy divorce from Ashley Cole - it demonstrates what perseverance and sheer doggedness can do. It’s a very Happy 1st Birthday to our friends Slainte. This is the place that the SOCIETY team likes to go to watch live sports; highlights so far have included St. Paddy’s Day, the Froch versus Groves boxing match and the World Cup, even though both Spain and England left the competition shamefully early. If you haven’t already been to this friendly bar, then you really are missing a treat. Sala Super Golf League also concluded in December with the final game of the tournament. The La Sala team is very serious about putting something back into the community and we are delighted to announce that a whacking 20,000€ has been raised for charity throughout the year via these very popular sporting events. You can say what you like about life on the Coast, but there are many public spirited individuals who are dedicated to contributing something special to the local area and its residents and this has been a wonderful example of what a bit of heart can do when it’s put into action. Finally if, like us, you’re feeling as though you pushed the boat out a little too far over the festive season, our beauty expert, Liza Mayne has all the answers to your post-blowout questions. Hopefully 2015 will be a great year for all of us - we aim to build on the successes of 2014 and sincerely hope that your New Year is a memorable one for all the right reasons. Happy New Year! CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT
We’re in crazy stupid love with Cheryl once again and here’s why
Soldiering On
Life is sweet again for and her dedicated ‘soldiers’ with the release of her fourth album Only Human and a new husband to boot
Cheryl
I
t’s ludicrous to think, that at just 31 years of age, a person could already have made a ‘comeback’, but such is the world of showbiz. Cheryl, now known as Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, after marrying her French beau Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini back in July last year, has once again taken the world by storm.
‘Have fun, we’re only human, fight on when things go bad cos it’s going to be fine again.’ I’m proof of that and for people who have seen things I might have been through, they will know how much this means to me,” 16
Placed back on her throne alongside music mogul Simon Cowell on hit reality TV show The X Factor, a new hubby in tow and two Number One singles from her new album Only Human – it’s safe to say Chezza is back with a vengeance. The word ‘comeback’, however, insinuates that the individual disappeared in the first place and it’s hard to imagine that Cheryl was ever entirely off the radar. Perhaps, it’s correct to say she did not escape the world’s media altogether; she did however have a few years of negative press and unfortunate incidents. The most significant of these was Cheryl’s early departure from the US X Factor in 2011. After just three weeks as a judge, the 31-year-old Geordie was, as the Daily Mail put it, “unceremoniously
dumped from X Factor USA”, stating that a source close to the star told The Sun, “she is completely shocked and stunned. She never saw this coming at all.” In interviews following the incident, Cheryl said that it was her own decision to quit the show. The whole sorry affair would have felt like a kick in the teeth for the singer who had just come through a severe bout of malaria and a divorce from premiership footballer Ashley Cole. The rupture between Cheryl and her cohort Cowell was however all forgotten about last year when it was announced that the former Girls Aloud member was to return to The X Factor UK. Cheryl broke news of her return on her Instagram account; she posted a photo of herself throttling Simon Cowell around the neck with the caption “GUESS WHAT!!.. I’m baaaacccckkkkk!!!! #iMayActuallyRingHisNeck #XFactor2014.” Despite such predictions, the panel have got along surprisingly well, including Cheryl and the other female judge Mel C from nineties group, The Spice Girls. The X Factor is one of the biggest platforms on UK television for exposure, so it was timed perfectly for Cheryl to release her fourth studio album whilst being a judge on the show. Only Human debuted back in November last year. The album is undeniably pop while managing to challenge convention in its own way. It’s thoughtful, considered, celebratory and hugely uplifting. Heavy on pop bangers, this is also a record that encourages the listener to tune into the songs’ overall message of overwhelming optimism. “I feel, for me, it’s my best work for many reasons. Looking back on everything that I’ve experienced personally, I think Only Human is a record that says, ‘Have fun, we’re only human, fight on when things go bad cos it’s going to be fine again.’ I’m proof of that and for people who have seen things I might have been through, they will know how much this means to me,” says Cheryl. Only Human continues the cannon of Cheryl’s successful solo singing career, which includes four number one singles and two chart topping albums. In the second half of last year both singles ‘Crazy Stupid Love’ and ‘I Don’t Care’, not only soared straight to Number One, but made chart history when Cheryl became the only woman in British history to have five solo Number Ones. “The first album it was brand new to me. Despite having seven years of experience, I felt like I had none. Not
“I know what I want, I know the songs are great and I’m excited for people to hear it. I’m not unsure of myself anymore and I guess that reflects in the album.”
having your friends onstage with you, I was going through a lot of change… It was quite daunting, so I’ll always have a special place for 3 Words. Messy Little Raindrops, I was literally on the floor. I hadn’t been very well, I was going through personal stuff so it wasn’t me at my best. My last record, A Million Lights, I absolutely love. I toured that album and I had the best time. But this one now, Only Human, I’m a woman, I know what I want, I know the songs are great and I’m excited for people to hear it. I’m not unsure of myself anymore and I guess that reflects in the album. I just want to bring a bit of light to people’s life with this album and hopefully give them a bit of hope and make them feel good. I just ultimately want it to be a great record that people love.” On the new album Cheryl has worked with newcomers like Joel Compass, Electric and Red Triangle along with more established names like Wayne Wilkins (Beyoncé) - who worked with Cheryl on ‘Fight For This Love’ - Cass Lowe (Chance The Rapper), Lucas Secon (Britney, Kylie), The Invisible Men (Iggy Azalea), Bonnie McKee (Katy Perry), Sia (Rihanna) and Cheryl’s former bandmate Nicola Roberts. The start of a new year brings the promise of success, health and happiness to everyone and Cheryl is a fitting example of how you never quite know what’s round the corner no matter how many setbacks you may receive along the way. It’s good to have you back Cheryl.

With their debut single ‘Desire’ hitting national radio airwaves in the last month, the coming year could see big things for this three-man group. They have also recently been signed to Polydor and received a nomination for the BRITS Critic’s Choice Award.
Marika Hackman
After a brief spell modelling for Burberry, Hampshire born Marika Hackman has turned her efforts to music and judging on the unique ‘abstract folk’ sound to her tracks, 2015 could be an exciting one for the 22-year old.
Rae Morris
Born in Blackpool, Rae Morris has been performing locally since the age of 15. After performing at the Reading and Leeds festivals this year, she has started to gain widespread approval and popularity and her single ‘Under the Shadows’ was chosen as BBC Radio 1’s Track of the Day at the end of last year. ONES TO WATCH 2015 IS SET TO BE A STELLAR YEAR FOR THE FOLLOWING MUSIC ARTISTS By Amber O’Shaughnessy
James Bay
Dubbed an ‘acoustic power house’, James Bay ended 2014 with a successful single called ‘Hold Back the River’. Incredibly, the British artist has already collaborated with artists such as Tom Oddell, John Newman and the Rolling Stones at their 2013 Hyde Park shows, so you can only imagine what this year will bring for the singer/ songwriter.
Sunset Sons
This British-Australian quartet was the 2014 summer soundtrack for those in the know. Producing cool, catchy songs, the boys met whilst surfing and this is reflected in their album Le Surfing, which has amazing energy and infectious beats.
George The Poet
“Rappers have so much power to do good and they squander it,” George Mpanga tells The Guardian. Born on a tough north-west London estate, the 22 year-old has been called a ‘spoken word’ artist, using music to voice opinions on racial equality and the power of education. Last autumn he was commissioned by BSkyB to write the season closer for Formula One, so with achievements like that under his belt and a clear resounding message behind his songs, 2015 looks promising for George.
The Entertainment Charts
ONES TO WATCH The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2
Part One may have only just been released but The Hunger Games looks set to dominate in 2015 as well. Follow Katniss Everdeen as she leads the rebellion against the corrupt Capitol. Blood will be shed and lives lost as the people of Panem rise up; you can guarantee this third instalment of the successful series will have everyone talking.
Hollywood has already started announcing the big movies for the coming year - here is our list of the most exciting releases. By Amber O’Shaughnessy
Fifty Shades of Grey
Following the massive success of the trilogy of books in 2013 (70million copies sold worldwide!), Mr Grey is back but this time on the big screen. No doubt women will be flocking to the nearest cinema in their hoards to watch Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey.
Jurassic World Kingsman: The Secret Service
Starring Colin Firth, this film tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training programme just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.
20
Steven Spielberg returns to produce this long awaited sequel. Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now features a dinosaur adventure park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. Jurassic World’s attendance rates begin to decline and a new attraction, created to re-spark visitor interest, backfires.
Cinderella
Director Kenneth Branagh tells the classic Disney tale in this new production featuring Cate Blanchett, Lily James (Rose from Downton Abbey) and Helen Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother. With plenty of sparkle, dazzling landscapes and heartbreaking drama, Cinderella is a must see in 2015.

Everyone’s Talking About We can’t help but be seduced by a good picture of a hot celebrity working out. Now, as we start the New Year with our resolutions, the majority of us want to get fit too. The Instagram accounts of these celebrities help to motivate us, as we realise they do actually have to work to look that good! Here’s the social media proof in a compilation of our favourite celeb workout accounts.
Rosie Huntington Whiteley - Ballet Pilates
Millie Mackintosh – Gym Crazy This girl has gone MAD for the gym and, as a result, is looking stunningly hot. As well as her fetish for Skinny Bitch Collective, you’ll also see her bench pressing, weight lifting and pull upping. Yeah we’re loving getting our motivation from Mills.
Khloe Kardashian - Boxing
This Victoria Secret’s Model is a big fan of clean and healthy living with exercises that strengthen her body both mentally and physically. She’s dedicated to ballet pilates and yoga and it shows in that incredible body.
Gisele - Kung Fu What we love most about Gisele is the fact she still seems incredibly ZEN. Like ‘crazy zen’? From paddle board yoga, beach-side yoga, yoga with her little baby, her body exudes a yogic calm. Until this… yeah, she also does Kung Fu Tai Chi, which she says has helped her bounce her post-baby body back from round to svelte.
Miranda Kerr - Yoga Ellie Goulding - Body Weight Training
Since her horrific ordeal with exhusband Lamar she’s done what every self respecting woman who’s been wronged would do – got MAD. Khloe’s FAVOURITE thing is boxing and - wow - does she do it!
She might be the most annoying rising star in a long time but those pins pack a punch. Ellie Goulding trains hard for her athletic figure and, whether you’re gazing at pictures of her crop top and shorts combinations or the evidence of her doing handstands, you’ll soon be inspired to get exercising.
5. Alessandra Ambrosio - Pilates
Most of us love a bit of Pilates anyway, but now that we know Alessandra is a fan too we’re even more up for it.
22
Miranda Kerr just screams yogi and has her own natural beauty range - it figures. Although her Instagram account consists mainly of shots of her in next to nothing, the shots you do see of her working out make us want to block book some yoga classes stat.
Ciara - TRX Another TRX convert, Ciara shows that this simple machine holds a lot of potential!

The Old T
here is a Christmas carol beginning “Deck the halls with boughs of holly”. Originally, although the words have been changed to fit the Christmas season, this was a New Year carol based on a Welsh melody dating back to the 16th century – “Nos Galan”. Mozart used the tune for a violin and piano duet in the 18th century, and the English words (written by a Scotsman!) first appeared in a collection of Welsh melodies published in 1862. When, however, the Welsh first began carolling the tune, the New Year did not occur on January 1st, and it was not until 1752 that they adopted that date, in common with England and Ireland. Scotland had already adopted it in 1600. Before then and, indeed today in many parts of the world, the date of the New Year varied. Traditionally Romulus initiated the Roman calendar of 304 days with ten months. Numa Pompilius added January and
24
February about the year 700 BC. Gradually this calendar fell out of sync with the sun. Under the Roman Republic and during the Roman Empire, the New Year began on the day that the Consuls entered office, at various times the 1st May , the 15th March, and subsequently the 1st January, on which date the Roman Senate took office. It was this date that was enshrined in the new calendar promulgated by Julius Caesar – hence the “Julian” calendar. When he realigned the Roman calendar with the sun in 46 BC, he had to add 90 extra days to that year. He established January 1st as the beginning of the year in honour of the god Janus, whose two faces allowed him to look both backward and forward. Romans
Roman God, Janus
celebrated the New Year by exchanging gifts, decorating their homes with laurel wreaths, and attending religious sacrifices. Following the collapse of the Roman Empire, however, in England the
various barbarian invasions which took place plunged the country back into paganism, and the festival of Samhain, about November time, probably marked the New Year. William the Conqueror reestablished January 1st but the Church begged to differ. The sack of Rome in 410 AD caused the collapse of the Roman communication systems. The Churches of the west and the east slowly began to drift apart, culminating in the Great Schism of 1054 when the Pope of Rome broke away from the Patriarchates of the East. It was only after this date that a significant difference began to emerge. In the west, the Roman Church moved its ecclesiastical New Year to the first day of Advent; the Sunday nearest Saint Andrew’s day (30th November). Later, in the 16th century, the Protestants (including the Anglicans and Lutherans) adopted this system. The Eastern Orthodox Churches observe September 1st as the beginning of the Church’s year, although this date varies according to which calendar is being used. When the Julian calendar again began to fall out of sync with the sun, this time by eleven days (now thirteen), Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 established a new rectified system of dating – the “Gregorian” calendar. He established January 1st as the beginning of the New Year, and it is this “Gregorian” calendar that we follow today, with the exception of the “Old Calendar” Orthodox Churches who still follow the “Julian” calendar; so that September 1st becomes September 14th, and the civil festivities of January 1st are observed on the 14th. Prior to Gregory’s ruling, the date of the New Year often fell on dates with a greater religious significance; December 25th, or March 25th (the Annunciation) being the most popular dates. Spain and Portugal fell into line with the Pope in 1556, Scotland in 1600, but it was not until 1752 that Britain and Ireland followed suit, with accompanying riots – “Give us back our eleven days!” (Wednesday, 2nd September was followed by Thursday, 14th September).
they would if there was anybody there to ring them) it is 2 AM on the 2nd January in Kiribati. Many countries, of course, whilst acknowledging the universality of January 1st in international computation, have their own traditions and customs. To choose but a few examples, China
observes the New Year on the new moon of the first lunar month, which can fall at any time between January 21st and February 21st. “Nava Varsha”
is celebrated in various regions of India in March or April, whilst the Sikh “Nanakshahi” is on March 14th. For several millennia the Kashmiri Brahmins have celebrated on the 19th March. For the Jewish “Rosh Hashanah”, a two day holiday commemorates the ending of the seven days of creation, and marks God’s yearly renewal of His world.
This year it starts on 14th September. Historically, the French Revolutionary calendar, in force in France from 1793 to 1805, began the year on the day of the southward equinox – 22nd, 23rd or 24th September. Localised customs tend to mark the New Year. Foremost amongst these is the practice of making “resolutions”. This originated in ancient Babylonia, where people would vow to pay off debts and return borrowed farm equipment. Here in Spain “Nochevieja” usually begins with a family dinner. Tradition also says that wearing new red underwear on New Year’s Eve brings good luck. As the chimes peal from the Correos building in Puerta del Sol square in Madrid, people gobble down twelve grapes, again for luck. It has to be said that this “tradition” began only in 1909, when the Alicante grape growers wondered how to dispose of their bumper harvest!
As the world is divided into time zones, the New Year moves progressively round the globe. The
first place to celebrate the New Year is located in the Line Islands at Kiribati (formerly the Gilbert Islands)
with a population of just over 100,000 people on a land mass of 800 square kilometres, gradually sinking into the Pacific ocean. The last places to usher in the New Year are the uninhabited US territories of Howard and Baker islands, midway between Hawaii and Australia. This month Beauty Editor Liza shares her top pick moisturisers, which will nurse you (and your skin!) through the cold winter months.
Clarins Instant light - Lip protector
Loreal ‘ age perfect Mature skin needs an extra boost of nutrients to stay strong and supple. Treat it to deep hydration and intense nutrition with the new Age Perfect UltraNourishing Moisturizer. Probably the best moisturiser I’ve ever used. Only need a little bit and your skin feels like silk - pure luxury. When you do apply it on your face it looks and feels greasy but soon drys into the skin leaving your face looking flawless and with an incredibly silky soft touch. Perfectly suited for dry skin.
Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour® Cream It’s no surprise that this award-winning product is so highly regarded and guaranteed to be found in every Beauty Editor or make-up Artist’s kit. It protects the skin from drying wind, central heating and air conditioning. This skincare multi-tasker also soothes, restores, calms and helps relieve minor skin irritations, including roughness, redness, chapped, cracked or dry skin for up to eight hours. It can also keep eyebrow hairs in place, restore shine on the legs, lips and eyelids and smooth cuticles for perfectly manicured nails. Another reason why you need this MUST HAVE product is because it soothes sunburned skin, which is likely to come in handy during those summer months on the Costa del Sol. The reasons why you must own this product are endless - go get yours today!
I have chosen to recommend Clarins Instant Light, as it’s a fabulous two-in-one product for this winter, which will help protect and smooth your lips as well as add the perfect lip-gloss shine. It helps even out lip tone, making them look perfect and pink. It’s almost like a BB cream for your lips! It’s a must have in my make-up bag and I never go anywhere without it. It is a very hydrating lip balm with a perfect hint of colour and shine and it’s not sticky at all. I just love this product and its packaging; it’s sleek and elegant and the applicator is a soft sponge tip which allows you to spread the product evenly. Regardless of the lack of colour, the consistency is good and it’s definitely one of my best beauty bits.
Biotherm baume Corps I just love, love, love this product! This lotion not only smells delicious, fading to a soft apricot scent that doesn’t fight with other fragrances, it is deeply moisturizing and hydrates well. It has a great texture - perfect to put on after shower as it absorbs quickly. If your skin normally feels dry due to extreme temperatures, this product makes the skin feel plump, nurtured and radiant looking. Worth every penny. Go on - spoil yourself!
Estee Lauder Hydrationist Maximum Moisture This ultra-comforting cream feels soft as it spreads across the skin. Made with a blend of powerful ingredients, this product works over time to help skin build up naturally and maintain a strong moisture barrier. The unique moisture complex helps skin preserve its own internal moisture for a deep, long-lasting and sustainable hydration. The formula absorbs easily and is designed to leave a feeling of deep hydration, comfort and suppleness. Available in Dry Skin, Normal/Combination Skin. Not suitable for oily skin.
Kiehl´s Creme de corp I am getting a bit addicted to Kiehl’s products lately; although pricey they work extremely well and last for ages. A little goes a long way and my skin definitely feels softer and smoother after using this product. Kiehl’s body cream is fragrance free with a thick creamy texture that absorbs nicely into the skin, keeping it feeling hydrated all day.

Create a smouldering smokey eye with Urban Decay’s Naked Pallete. Use MAC’s Hue to create a nude lip and top it off with a high shine gloss like Dior Addict. For this type of look why not try Cheryl’s Eylure lashes. I love the shape of these lashes, they start off lighter in the inner eye and then thicken to a strong lash line.

CELEBRITY TREATMENT The Vampire Facial
M
ost people’s immediate response when confronted with a photograph of a face covered in human blood would be to scream and run away. When that person’s face belongs to global style icon Kim Kardashian, everyone wants to know what she is doing and where they can get one. I’m personally not the biggest fan of the new Mrs Kanye West but if there is one thing I can credit the celebrity for it’s her ability to look so flawless 24/7. Well, I have news for you - I know her secret.
Why Botox is so 2014 into the body, but uses part of one’s own blood. Lisa places the three test tubes containing the patient’s blood into a centrifugal device. “This will separate the plasma from the rest of the blood,” says the surgeon, “It’s the plasma we want because it contains all the regenerative cells that will stimulate collagen growth in the skin and make the face look younger and more radiant”. The plasma, once massaged into the skin, also helps to improve pigmentation and scarring.
Those of you who regularly peruse Kim K’s Instagram account, will know she is partial to the ‘it’ skincare treatment of the year – The Nytox Vampire Facial. Admittedly, it does not sound too appealing, which is why I jumped at the chance to watch the procedure being carried out at new cosmetic clinic, Aesthetic Solutions Spain. Lisa Doran, top of her game in aesthetic procedures and one of Europe’s leading scalp micropigmentation specialists, has recently opened up a brand new clinic. Located next to the Top Car garage, just outside Puerto Banús, this chic clinic is light, bright and contains a subtle touch of glamour. The Vampire Facial is just one of the many services offered here, as well as tattoo, scar and burns removal, scalp micropigmentation and cosmetic eyebrow tattooing. The Vampire Facial basically involves the removal of plasma from the body and its reapplication to the face. The treatment began with Lisa taking some blood from the female 50-yearold client who lies on a bed in one of two state-of-the-art treatment rooms at the Clinic. “I have Botox probably twice a year”, she tells me when I ask her why she has opted for the Vampire Facial instead of other cosmetic surgery options, “but I thought I would try this out as a less toxic, potentially more effective alternative.” It’s true that many people are attracted to the Vampire Facial since it does not involve injecting external substances
Lisa then uses a dermaroller on the patient’s skin. This puts small pinpricks into the surface of the face to ensure the plasma and all its healing properties can penetrate the skin more deeply. This is the part of the treatment that I can imagine hurts quite a lot, but to my surprise, the patient tells us “It’s not painful, more just slightly uncomfortable. It’s creating a tingly sensation on my face”. The plasma goodness is then rubbed into the surface of the skin, which creates the signature bloody effect seen in the photos as it mixes with the tiny pricks of blood created from the dermaroller. It’s almost a bit of an anti-climax. After seeing the gory faces of those women who have tried the Vampire Facial, I must admit I envisaged something much more gruesome!
it generates without involving any unbearable pain or lengthy surgical procedures. Within one hour, the plasma has been rubbed onto all areas of the face and Lisa tells her patient she needs to wait six hours before washing it off. “In many cases, results are almost immediate,” Lisa replies when I ask how long it will be before the effects start to show. “Certainly by the next day, the person should see a noticeable difference although I do recommend having the facial three times for maximum results”. The lady leaves the clinic, albeit rather sheepishly because of the scarlet face mask she dons, but quite pleased with her decision to follow in the footsteps of Kim Kardashian and other celebrities such as Bar Rafaeli in opting for the Vampire Facial. She departs with no bruising, often an inevitability when receiving Botox and no pain, aside from a faint feeling of warmth and tingling. Aesthetic Solutions Spain is the ONLY licensed clinic for the Nytox Vampire Facial. For a glowing start to 2015 why not get in touch with the highly professional Lisa Doran for this star studded treatment? Trust me, you’ll never look back. Having owned one of the top ten Redken salons in the UK, Zoe continues to build on the special formula that made her previous salon such a roaring success - that of quality not quantity. “Some of our clients might be having extensions taken out, colour put on and new extensions put back in,” says Zoe, “they could be in here for a good few hours, which is why we invite people to bring their laptop or lunch in order to make their experience as comfortable as possible”. The Woods salon experience is a leisurely and enjoyable one, rather than clients being rushed out of the door before the next sit down.

EXCLUSIVE FIRST TEST DRIVE AT Laguna Seca Circuit Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the MERCEDES - AMG GT
71
TORQUE TALK
W
here the naturally-aspirated SLS AMG roared, snarled and thundered its way around Laguna Seca when I drove it here on the launch four years ago, the new AMG GT presents an altogether more polished and cultured face to the same task. More cultured does not mean slower, and AMG’s DTM ace, Bernd Schneider, told me his first impressions indicate that the GTS on its standard Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber is as fast here as the SLS Black Series with its sticky Cup tyres, which means around 1 min 37 sec. “We are going to try the optional AMG GT specific Cup 2 semislick tyres while we are here,” he said. “I estimate they will shave a further 1.5 sec off, which would bring the time down to the 1 min 35 sec area.” AMG had specific cars for road and track use, the latter all being the Edition 1 model with the fixed rear wing that provides around 10 percent more downforce than the active rear spoiler on the normal GT and GTS. Luckily the first AMG GTS I tried on track had perfect tyres, and the car’s handling, grip and poise were simply amazing. In combination with power steering that is on the heavy side of medium weighted but perfectly dialled into the chassis response rate, the front end turned in on cue, homing in on apexes like a hungry shark, the back end followed precisely with huge amounts of mechanical grip to contain the shedload of torque provided by the mighty twin-turbo V8. You have to manage the throttle to avoid breaking those big rear tyres loose, especially as there is no turbo lag to speak of from this strong hearted, responsive new motor. The revised rear axle design squeezes every last drop of mechanical grip possible out of the standard Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres, and helps stability when you are pushing the strong, fade free ceramic brakes to the limit coming off the fast straights here. With such an impressive performance with these standard road tyres, I would love to try the GTS on the stickier Cup 2 rubber.
72
AMG’s GT is the new junior league supercar class benchmark
TORQUE TALK
The GTS has the clever electronic rear differential as standard, and this and the optional active engine gearbox mounts work seamlessly in the background. Together with the stiff torque tube and the new rear axle geometry, the combination delivers a noticeable lack of lateral play or lost motion in the chassis under all dynamic conditions. This notion of single-minded purpose instils immense confidence in the car from the get go. Whether it is a slow, tight, a medium or a fast sweeping bend, you can take the handling and grip for granted. This is a car that continues to delight the keen driver as the miles roll away under its lightweight wheels. Equally impressive is the way the suspension ‘breathes’ over bumps in both its primary and secondary ride. We encountered some very challenging winding hill roads en route to Laguna Seca, with midcorner bumps aplenty. Where lesser cars would have been punted off line by some of these undulations, the GTS continued to surprise as its firm suspension and wide tyres refused to be deflected in any way, shape or form. Meanwhile, the ability of the superb spring and damper settings to round off short, sharp bumps, whether mid-corner or in straight line, clearly shows that AMG’s chassis engineers are at the top of their game.
73
TORQUE TALK
The AMG GT chassis borrows heavily from the SLS. This is no bad thing as its transaxle layout with a double wishbone at each corner, and the same 47/53 percent front/ rear weight distribution for better traction in all conditions, confers an ideal balance of handling and traction for a front-midengine, rear-wheel-drive car. While the front suspension benefits from a few detail refinements, the rear axle is where the big improvement has taken place. One of the reasons a bespoke racecar has such good handling is the 1:1 ratio of wheel to suspension movement often achieved with horizontally opposed springs and dampers across the chassis. Packaging constraints prevent such an arrangement from being used on a normal road car unless it is a midengined two-seater. However, the AMG chassis engineers have managed to work out a change in rear axle hardware that delivers a 10:9 ratio, which is close enough to 1:1 to deliver significant benefits to the geometry and elastokinematics of the revised rear axle.
74
This greater geometrical purity was achieved by using longer lower wishbones to reduce the deflection angle under bump conditions, while moving the chassis mounting points of the upper wishbones outwards to meet the revised uprights. The positive effect of this simple change is manifest in the better ride and handling of the AMG GT.
An undersquare motor with a bore x stroke of 83.0 x 92.0 mm, the M178 runs a 10.5:1 compression ratio and 1.2 bar of boost for 462 hp at 6,000 rpm, and 600Nm of torque between 1,600 and 5,000rpm. With the AMG Dynamic Package, peak power is maintained from 6,000 to 6,500rpm.
Apart from its vastly superior ride quality, the GTS also has two sides to the character of its potent bi-turbo V8, which allows the car to play long distance cruiser on the one hand and weapons grade trackday star on the other.
The more powerful GTS version has 510hp at 6,250rpm with 650Nm of torque from 1,750 to 4,750rpm. With the AMG Dynamic Plus package as we drove it at Laguna Seca, peak boost is maintained from 1,750 to 5,000rpm. The 1,570 kg GTS blasts from 0-100km/h in 3.8 sec and on to an electronically limited 310km/h. The numbers alone however, do not adequately describe the smooth punch of the twin-turbo motor, which delivers a much broader spread of torque than the naturally-aspirated M159 motor in the SLS AMG.
The all-new M178 3,982cc litre, 90-degree V8 bi-turbo AMG motor is a hot inside Vee’ V8 engine, with its two turbochargers placed within the Vee of the motor and a dry sump configuration.
Where the M159 motor assaulted both the tarmac and you with its larger than life personality, the new M178 motor speaks more quietly but carries an even bigger stick.
Where a long drive in an SLS AMG leaves you a bit breathless, a little beaten up by its firm ride, and with your ears ringing from the ‘always on’ soundtrack of its bombastic M159 V8, the AMG GTS gives you options.
TORQUE TALK
75
TORQUE TALK The AMG GT also does bombastic when you open the taps fully, but the counterpoint is quiet and relaxed high speed cruising, or even cantering along at suburban speeds with a level of refinement that was simply never written into the SLS script. Hard acceleration brings the characteristic AMG V8 growl to the fore, while the revised AMG Speedshift DCT seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox fires off its upshifts a significant 30-percent faster than before. Car enthusiasts have an unhealthy obsession with numbers, one of them being the speed of paddle shift gearbox upshifts. However, the fact is that beyond a certain point, an upshift is so fast that in the practical terms of making a car accelerate faster it becomes irrelevant beyond bar talk. The AMG DCT gearbox in the GT is now at that point, and the speed and smoothness with which it transitions to the next higher ratio puts as big a smile on your face as the deep chested sound of the twin turbo V8 singing for its supper in between these lightning fast shifts.
A big gripe both the press and many owners had with the SLS gearbox, and indeed the gearbox across AMG models in general, was the recalcitrant software that steadfastly refused to deliver second gear downshifts under hard braking towards a slow bend on track. This was particularly evident when braking hard towards the 90-degree left-hander at Laguna Seca that takes you onto the main straight past the pits. Here, the SLS AMG and the C63 Black Series both disgraced themselves by requiring two or three pulls on the left paddle before they would engage second gear. That blot on AMG’s copybook is now thankfully consigned to history, and the revised gearbox does just as well going down its ratios as up. As a front-mid-engined car, the transaxle equipped AMG GT gives away nothing to the best mid-engined supercars in dynamic terms, and bests them for overall handling balance and practical luggage carry ability. After all, what mid-engined supercar comes remotely close to being able to carry
two people and a decent amount of luggage across a continent? In its time, the SLS AMG was one impressive machine. But compared to the sleeker, faster and much cheaper AMG GTS, it now feels like a relic from the days of supercars past. While I would not exactly call the SLS two dimensional, the GT is a much more rounded car in so many ways than its predecessor. The SLS AMG felt like a work in progress during the first half of its four-year lifespan, but the AMG GT leaves the starting blocks a very complete and accomplished all-round machine. With so many facets already polished to near perfection, it takes the junior league supercar genre to the next level. At the end of a long day of driving on road and track, I drove right past our hotel entrance, and went up and down the road for a few miles either way twice just to prolong my seat time in the AMG GT. There are not many cars that would inspire me do this.
With so many facets already polished to near perfection, the AMG GT takes the junior league supercar genre to the next level.

THE COLOURS OF
2015 By Hayley Reed Founder of FOC DESIGN
E
very year – or season, in fact - the fashion and design world announces the colours of the year. In the clothing industry this can be more transient, with collections being produced every season. However, when it comes to domestic colours we would rather they stand the test of time rather than clients having to replace the bedspread and cushions several times a year! Here we have laid out a season-less palette of tones and hues that we believe will be big leaders in 2015. Through some clever contrasting their combination is warm and vibrant and they work well individually or together.
82
Signature Colours Apricot – It works as a subtly neutral shade of Nude and a soft warm palette for a light and fresh accent colour. Dusty Coral – Muting the stronger, more in-your-face Coral tones, Dusty Coral is slightly more autumnal, but also more subtle to work with, allowing other muted contrasting colours to be combined with the coral to really jazz up a room. Minky Purple – This colour has no gender associated with it, which is why we love using it so much. It adds life to a design without being garish and can be combined with all tones of purple, greys, whites and silvers to create a look of understated elegance.
Prominent Colours Apricot, Blushy Nudes, Olive, Avocado Green, Pale Sherbet (Orange), Pearl Cool Grey, Charcoal, Minky Purples, Soft Whites and Ivories and Dusty Rose.

Industrial Revolution
lthough this is not a new concept, I’m predicting a larger appreciation and an adoption of the Industrial Design movement. We often associate the industrial look with open-plan New York loft apartments and, more recently, with converted warehouses in London. There is a practical aspect to its implementation; making a design feature out of the simplicity and necessity of an installation has allowed people to add certain features to a home, months or years after the construction of the building. Exposed flues on fireplaces, ducting for air conditioning or ventilation and even adding new electrical circuits or switches is no problem when this style is embraced. Instead of trying to conceal the tubing or casing of these features, they are made to stand out, often using a contrasting colour or texture to draw attention to their presence.
EXPOSING IT ALL – painted brickwork, iron staircase and metal electrical tubing is a perfect backdrop for this feature, sunshine yellow sideboard.
The beauty of this exposed, raw installation is that it can be combined with so many different styles of furnishing and colour schemes. Whether you are keen to maintain a high level of luxury and chicness or prefer the eclectic mix of vintage furniture, the industrial style can easily be worked into the concept. I hope we see more of this durable, unrefined style where luxury and sleek fittings and materials are combined with rugged finishes to walls, stairs and other key pieces in the design. It somehow gives an interior the perfect harmony and reminds us just how much technology goes into creating our havens we call home.
Using industrial design schemes does not mean you have to forfeit luxury – adding sleek, clean-cut, glamorous furniture balances this urban design style.

This trend has been a bit of a creeper. As we have become more inventive with what we choose as a potential residence, as the types of buildings we inhabit have become more versatile, so has the use and distribution of their interiors. The open-plan living idea is no revolution – it just seems to appeal more and more. Perhaps this stems from how busy we all are nowadays and a more social, interactive open space allows us to come together, even when we are still all doing what we need to do. An open-plan style home allows Mum to prepare dinner and still keep an eye on the kids, it allows Dad to finish off his emails but not necessarily in a stuffy office and generally allows us to create a larger and more versatile hub for the home. With the benefit of the lovely natural light here in Marbella, open-plan living also allows us to take advantage of lots of light, keeping the home bright and breezy. Open-plan doesn’t dictate your style – most design genres work. I am a big fan of open-plan, it allows a kitchen to be softened by plush fabrics that you generally couldn’t and wouldn’t use in a kitchen, it allows for continuity throughout the space and I just love the feeling of being able to interact or catch the latest episode of the most recent addictive TV series, even when I am making the dinner.

id you know the collective noun for vipers is a ‘nest’ and several monkeys constitute a ‘cartload’, but here are some you are probably unaware of: a wisdom of wombats, a dazzle of zebras, an ambush of tigers, a poverty of pipers, a rabble of gnats, a pandemonium of parrots and an ostentation of peacocks, to name but a few. All good - but what about these? A group of nuns is a superfluity and more than one hermit is an observance (strange that there is even a collective noun at all for hermits) and finally a nag of mothers-in-law – okay, I put that one in myself, but do you get the gist? The reason for my newly acquired knowledge of collective nouns is that I was searching for the collective noun for a group of estate agents. I couldn’t find one so thought I would borrow an existing term; after looking at all the above and being briefly tempted by an unkindness (ravens) and a wake (buzzards) I settled on a bellowing, a noun normally associated with bullfinches. Whisper it softly, but it would appear people are looking to buy property in Marbella again; modern contemporary minimalistic builds have seemed to be flavour of the month for a while now. BUT (and there is always a BUT) if you were to catch a group of estate agents in private, or as I have now have decided to call them, a bellowing of estate agents, they will
90
tell you that there are plenty of buyers wanting to buy, unfortunately the stock they are looking for doesn’t match up to their expectations and therefore the market isn’t as buoyant as it could be. In other words there is a lot of rubbish out there. So, beyond modern contemporary villas, what are buyers looking for? If you were to ask a bellowing of estate agents to compile a Top 10 of buyers’ requirements it would probably read as follows: 1. LOCATION: Area or position (walking distance to amenities or the beach may be a must, for instance.) 2. Orientation: South or south-west facing as everyone wants to come here for the sun! 3. Views: Preferably sea views, but mountains are good too. 4. Bright aspect: Lots of light is a must - who wants to move to the southern tip of Spain and sit in the dark? 5. En-suite bathrooms: No longer considered a luxury. 6. Own Pool: Sharing is what the sea is for. 7. Garage or covered offroad parking and storage: Very important these days.
8. Large living area/lounge opening on to the garden. Blame all the TV programmes for this one. 9. Modern open plan kitchen: Ditto above! No small dark impractical old fashioned kitchens please. 10. Rentability or re-saleability: If you have numbers one to eight then times it by the number of bedrooms for a guaranteed hot property! 11. Price: See numbers one to eight Security was also a popular concern, especially when applied to buying apartments. If we just focus our attention on price for a moment, the mistake most commonly made is that people start with a price, before they list their must-haves. This should be the other way around and my advice would be to list what is really important to you as a must-have and look at what is available. That will determine where and what you can buy. You, as the buyer, may then have to accept that you can’t have all the Top 10 features for your budget and, in doing so, will most probably have to raise your budget to compensate or compromise the location to meet your requirements. Here lies the very nub of the problem: if, as the list suggests, these are buyers’ most

popular requirements why aren’t there many properties made to these specifications? In actual fact very few properties currently meet five of the list, never mind all nine. The reasons for this would take up an entire article in itself so, if you don’t mind, let’s leave that question for the moment and focus on the issue of finding our perfect 10! The only sure-fire way of securing all nine from the list above is to build the property yourself – no, really, it’s actually cheaper than you think and here’s why; last month I wrote about building costs falling around 25 per cent compared with 2009 and the reasons behind this. It would probably take you about 12 months to find an existing property that matches most of your requirements and this property, should it exist at all, will almost undoubtedly not fulfil the entire list. Even if it does, it will probably cost you far more than you originally thought, or you may have to live with the fact that your location is 40 kilometres from where you originally wanted to be.

An impressive feat of engineering, the new pedestrian bridge constructed in San Pedro de Alcรกntara is putting this town firmly on the map. hether you love it or hate it, the iron bridge that is currently being built in San Pedro has got everybody talking and generated much interest in the town. The creation of the new boulevard and park above the tunnel in San Pedro de Alcántara is nearing completion. The 54,000 square metre site will play host to a fantastic range of facilities including a large outdoor amphitheatre with a capacity for an
audience of 500 and a 1,500 square metre skating rink. Additionally, there will be landscaped gardens, children’s play areas, sports pitches, fountains and cycle routes. The Mayoress of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, told Sur in English, “The open air auditorium will be managed by the town hall and will facilitate the scheduling of shows for young people, ‘fiestas’ and cultural events.”

101
The bold and daring design represents the perfect amalgamation between the old and the new; it gives a nod to San Pedro’s industrial past whilst heralding in a new and exciting era for the town. Boasting fertile lands due to its optimum geographical position, between two large mountains, the area introduced revolutionary crop and irrigation systems, which propelled the sleepy Andalusian village into a town to be reckoned with as workers arrived from surrounding Spanish towns. This economic boost brought with it some tourism and the addition of new infrastructure.
“The open air auditorium will be managed by the town hall and will facilitate the scheduling of shows for young people, ‘fiestas’ and cultural events.”
102
Furthermore in the 19th Century, San Pedro de Alcántara became the
sugar-producing centre of AndalucĂa, with the town hall even building several factories, similar in efficiency and scale to the spinning mills in cities such as Lancashire and Derbyshire. San Pedro has therefore always been a front-runner in terms of economic growth and the design of the new bridge both recognises this and indicates continued development in the same vein. Future plans for the town include a new shopping centre on the outskirts of San Pedro as well as a university. The beachfront ‘paseo’ also underwent major renovations this year, including the installation of water features and sculptures, which easily rivals the promenades of neighbouring towns Estepona and Marbella.

103
Future plans for the town include a new shopping centre on the outskirts of San Pedro as well as a university. Safe to say, San Pedro de Alcántara is no longer known just as the town above the new tunnel, which was constructed back in 2013, to divert traffic away from the town centre. It has become an epicentre on the Coast, which boasts stylish restaurants, picturesque plazas and now so much al fresco recreational space to make any evening stroll or weekend day out a joy.

reakfast, they say, is the most important meal of the day whilst dinner is seen as the most significant, with most people setting aside an hour or so to cook some big dish of something after work. Lunch for many people in cities around Europe is overlooked – and usually involves buying an overpriced sandwich on the hoof from a café refrigerator or proudly presenting a limp portion of lettuce in a Tupperware box that you’ve brought in from home that morning. Well, we hate to be smug, but here on the Costa del Sol, we cherish lunchtime. Businesses shut up shop, mothers take a break from household chores and everyone each has their favourite lunch spot to spend an hour or so enjoying a tasty dish and

veryone needs a friendly local café where you can pop in for a quick breakfast on the way to a meeting, a cup of coffee with friends, an informal lunch or a dinner date. We are so lucky to have some really great eating places on this Coast, but one of our hot favourites has to be Small World Café.
modern, cosy, relaxed, yet sophisticated environment. An unpretentious, industrial-chic décor with a nostalgic New York loft vibe. Above all, we are firm believers in value for money and to never, ever, short change the customer. Big portions of quality, fresh, daily produce at low prices.”
We have thought long and hard about the possible reasons behind Small World’s success, but the most likely explanation is that it was created by four friends with one vision and a world of experience in the world of catering. Business partners Alistair, John, Leo and Victor have all known one another since they were 11 years old and clearly agree on what it takes to run a successful restaurant. Three of the friends trained at Marbella’s famous Les Roches School of Hospitality, while the fourth received his grounding in New York City, which is quite possibly why Small World Café has such an authentic New York deli vibe.
One of the things that you can always rely on is great music that plays at just the right volume throughout the day and night. On our most recent visit it was that the set the mood – along with the glasses of mulled wine, which was gorgeous and went down a treat as we sat and perused the menu.
Having met on the not-so-mean streets of Marbella as children, it’s hardly surprising that this canny business quartet agree on so many things, not least that there should always be a partner on the premises, a smart way of guaranteeing that standards are maintained. The mood is most definitely relaxed; friendly, smiling waiting staff show you to your table and are also on hand to offer advice about the menu, should you be dithering about which dishes to choose. “Small World is all about keeping it simple,” the boys state on their website. “We wanted a place that was approachable. The kind of place we would like to hang out in: a

You can stick to the main menu or you can take a sort of culinary detour and go off piste with the wonderful specials menu, which changes daily and features a starter, main course, salad, dessert and drink. After many minutes of debate we finally made our decision: it was to be
Tiger Prawn Skewers, marinated in Honey and Chilli and served with Pineapple and Crispy Vegetable Salad with a Thai Dressing and Red Tuna Tartar marinated in Soy, Lime and Wasabi with Toasted Sesame Seeds and Coriander and served over Mixed Endives with a side of Hummus and Curried Tortilla Chips. We also liked the look of the specials menu and chose the Curried Vegetable Soup with Toasted Sesame Seeds and Yoghurt; it was absolutely delicious and the fish dishes did not disappoint either. The Small World team has the whole portion thing sorted out brilliantly – they realise that customers don’t want to be weighted down with too much food at the beginning of their meal, but neither do they want to feel that they have received too little for their money. So, with our palates fully activated and plenty of room left to experience the best of the main courses, we embarked on Round Two. Given Small World’s New

York influence we decided to try the Homemade Beef Burger with Crispy Bacon on a Warm Bun with melted Emmental Cheese, Mixed Leaves, Red Onion, Pickles, Mayonnaise and Tomato. The Chicken Curry with Rice was packed full of amazing flavours and our other choice, the Roasted Cajun Pumpkin Tower with Pan Fried Goat’s Cheese, Sautéed Spinach, Poached Egg, Balsamic Glacée, Basil Pesto andTruffle Oil was equally terrific. The latter dish was an especially bold creation, combining a huge range of unexpected flavours in a style that was pure Small World Café. The main course on the specials menu the day we visited was Lamb Shank in Red Wine Jus with Mashed Potato, the ideal dish for a winter day. Many of the restaurants on our ‘favourites’ list are Spanish, but the drawback to many of these is that, however delicious the starters and main
courses might be, the dessert menu is often disappointing. I mean, we are all fans of crème caramel and even prepackaged ice cream in the summer, but sometimes – especially when the rain starts to fall and the temperature drops – we prefer something with a bit more substance. It is in this department that Small World scores major points. Despite the American inspired treats on offer (Brownie with Hot Chocolate Fudge, Caramel Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream and Baked, American style Mars Bar Cheesecake with Sticky Caramel Sauce to name but two) we eventually opted for the Hot Apple Crumble with Cinnamon, Banana, Strawberries and Vanilla Ice Cream. This was an old favourite, brought to new life by the imaginative combination of hot and
Sometimes when trying to define the formula behind a winning enterprise we tend to over complicate things, which is something that this extraordinarily successful restaurant has so far avoided. What it does offer is excellent value for money, attention to the tiniest detail, providing a five-star service to an enthusiastically loyal client base by ensuring that Small World remains very much a hands-on business. We anticipate enjoying time at this fantastic restaurant for many years to come. Small World Café Ctra. Istan, km.1 CC Le Village, 15 Marbella Tel. +34 952 771 046 smallworldcafe.com

She’s GAGA for Paella’s y Mas!
L
ast month we reported on pop sensation Lady Gaga’s visit to Marbella, when she stayed at the über-exclusive Villa del Mar at the Marbella Club Hotel. We recently discovered that, during her short break on the Costa, the US singer made a special visit to none other than our very own favourite paella restaurant – Paella’s y Mas! The restaurant, which specialises in traditional Spanish rice and noodle dishes, was delighted to welcome the global star through their doors. They tweeted ‘Paellas y mas restaurant Marbella wishes you safe travels. We hope you and your
team enjoyed our delicious dishes last evening.’ With Gaga looking for a villa to buy here in Marbella, who knows – maybe the singer will soon become a Paella’s y Mas regular and, with their unique flavour combinations and top ranking position on Trip Advisor, who could blame her? rom heart-warming apple strudel to fresh tuna sashimi, Kafé Katerina caters for all tastes and occasions. The new café, located in the heart of Aloha, has only been open for a few months but has already made its mark on the local community. One of the best things about Kafé Katerina is its long hours. Opening its doors bright and early at 8 30am, commuters can stop en route to work for a Vitamin C fix with a fresh orange juice or kick-start their morning with a cup of freshly ground coffee. In the stillness of the morning in Andalucia, it is often difficult to find somewhere that is open and serving breakfast. Oxana, owner of Kafé Katerina, noticed this gap in the market and now enjoys a healthy breakfast trade. Later on, as the mid morning approaches, expats and locals alike meet in the friendly,
whilst the Raspberry Tartlet served with English Whipped Cream is almost too pretty to cut into and eat…almost. Although the café closes at five, many of the lunch dishes can be ordered and taken away to serve up at supper. The Salmon Fillet marinated in Lemon, Soy Sauce and Fresh Chilli is a very popular choice for those individuals wanting a healthy but tasty dinner option and the Crispy Chicken Tenders is always a winner.
bustling café for fresh pastries and pots of tea. Kafé Katerina offer a diverse lunch menu, made up of fresh salads as well as winter hotpot favourites including Beef Stroganoff. The kitchen team also bakes cakes on a daily basis, which prove to hard to resist for many of the Kafé’s visitors. The lighter than light Soufflé Cake is covered with milk chocolate and is an ideal afternoon treat,
As the winter sun sets on the Coast and Kafé Katerina shuts up shop for another day, the staff leave tired but satisfied with another full day of custom, delighting Marbella residents and tourists with fresh, terrifically tasty dishes and drinks.
