PUBLISHER’S LETTER

I

f you’re still feeling hungover from New Year’s Eve, then don’t worry – so are we. However we can promise that this issue of SOCIETY will ease you into 2017 as gently as possible and hopefully offer some good advice along the way.

Our cover star, Bruno Mars, is one of the hottest names in the music industry right now, not only for his dynamic stage presence and talent as a performer, but also for his skills as a songwriter and producer. Did you know that he co-wrote CeeLo Green’s massive hit, ‘Forget You’? Neither did we until we started to look into his achievements more seriously. He’s still only 31 years old, so has many, many more years to build on the success of his first three albums, the latest of which, 24K Magic, is still doing well in the charts. We might have lost Prince last year but we think that Mars has that indefinable quality that might make him a worthy successor. Of course it’s still early days, but he certainly has something of the charisma and talent of the Purple One – not to mention being only a couple of inches taller! Have you made any New Year’s resolutions yet? I always say that the only one I will ever make is not to make any more New Year’s resolutions, even though my better half seems to think that there are a few areas that I should be attending to - but let’s leave that aside for now. If you have vowed to get out more, then we have some terrific suggestions as to which places are going to be the top hotspots to visit, from Ethiopia and Sri Lanka to Finland and Snowdonia. It might sound strange, but apparently North Wales has repackaged itself as a great place to go if you’re into high octane activities, so you will find plenty to do. If getting out and about includes meeting someone new, then our beginner’s guide to online dating should appeal to you. The rise of the internet has meant that there are some very professional sites to choose from and some even specialise in linking up middle-aged clients, same sex couples and

high earners. Many are free, while others charge a decent fee upfront so that you can be linked only to people who share your educational level, core values etc. Apparently more and more people are finding it difficult to locate their perfect partner, so it does pay to be scientific about it. How will you know if you don’t try? Do you know how many people sign up for gym membership in the New Year? Me neither, but you can be sure that improving health and fitness plays a big part in our game plan for the year ahead. One thing I would really like to know is how many people who swear that they have changed their lifestyles for the better at the end of the first week of January still feel smug by the end of December? Call me a cynic, but I reckon the vast majority will have fallen off the wagon and all those plans for massive weight loss, killer abs and running a marathon will be forgotten about in a haze of pulled muscles and mince pies. In any case, for those of you who are serious about making a new start, we have a number of suggestions. Matt Roberts has some sound advice as to how we can pick out the good, helpful stuff from the fitness media and ignore all the generalisations and misinformation while Annabella Giles offers some ideas for healthy living and – guess what? - they are all quite easily achievable. If you’re thinking of a completely new lifestyle, then why not factor in a move as part of your plans? We love Palo Alto and feel that this new development in the very desirable village of Ojén would be a wonderful place to put down roots. The whole complex is extremely luxurious and the views, even by the very high standards of Marbella, are breathtaking. We say that Palo Alto will be one of the places to live in 2017 and, don’t forget, you heard it here first. Whether you’re working on a new you or hoping to carry on where you left off, the SOCIETY team would like to wish you a very happy and healthy 2017! ‘Til next time... Andy Clark

24k TALENT by KJ Elsdon

The past couple of years have been a sad time for the music industry, with many of its towering talents falling by the wayside but, if you are still mourning the loss of Michael Jackson and Prince, it is comforting to know that there is a new generation of five-star songwriters and performers and, of these young pups, surely none are more supercharged than Bruno Mars?

YOU GOTTA KNOW WHAT YOU ARE, WHO YOU ARE AND HOW YOU WANT TO BE PORTRAYED MY GOALS ARE – I DON’T NEED MUCH. I’M A SIMPLE MAN. I THINK THAT SUCCESS IS HAVING FUN. AND WHEN I’M HAVING FUN DOING MUSIC, I’M HAPPY. IF I CAN MAKE A LITTLE MONEY ON THE SIDE DOING IT, I’M REALLY HAPPY 12

M

arry the songwriting ability of a young Prince with the looks of a 1970s teen idol and what do you get? You get Bruno Mars! Born Peter Gene Hernandez in Waikiki, Honolulu to a half Puerto Rican and half Ashkenazi Jewish father and a Filipino and Spanish mother, it’s not surprising that Mars has inherited uniquely exotic looks. His Elvis impersonator uncle also hugely influenced his career, persuading his nephew to hone his performance skills from the age of three. Seeing that three-year old Bruno had a real desire to sing on stage, he was called into action as a bite-size support act to belt out numbers by The Isley Brothers, The Temptations and Michael Jackson. This powerhouse was so prodigiously gifted that the tiny Elvis even featured in a cameo role in the movie, Honeymoon in Vegas, when he was just six years old. Nicknamed Bruno by his father at the age of two because of his resemblance to the wrestler, Bruno Sammartino, he later changed his surname in 2004 after moving to Los Angeles. “I felt like I didn’t have any pizzazz,” he said “and a lot of girls say I’m out of this world, so I was like I guess I’m from Mars.” Moving to big, bad LA held few terrors for Mars, who had the strong attitude and laser-

sharp focus that was partly a result of being one of six children. He also had the huge advantage of years of performing experience, both as a cute mini Elvis and as part of his family’s band, The Love Notes. When in high school he had also signed up to be part of another band, The School Boys so by the time he moved to California in 2003 aged 17, he had acquired a wealth of experience. His admiration for Jimi Hendrix had spurred him into taking up the guitar, not that learning to play an instrument was especially noteworthy: “Growing up in Hawaii made me the man I am. I used to do a lot of shows in Hawaii with my father’s band. Everybody in my family sings, everyone plays instruments. I’ve just been surrounded by it,” he said in 2010. Such a strong mixture of natural ability and intense focus could not fail to bring Mars success, even in the dog-eat-dog atmosphere of Los Angeles. Within months of his arrival he was signed to Berry Gordy’s legendary Motown label. This period of Mars’s life didn’t go as well as one might have anticipated, but later it brought him a little luck in the shape of songwriter and producer, Philip Lawrence, who was also a Motown signing and would prove a valuable collaborator. Following his disappointment at Motown, Mars signed a new contract with Steve Lindsey and Cameron Strang at the less famous but much friendlier Westside Independent. Lindsey soon showed himself to be an excellent mentor, teaching Mars and Jeff Bhasker (who would later co-write ‘Locked Out of Heaven’, among other songs) the alchemy of successful songwriting. At the same time, Mars was making ends meet by playing cover versions around the LA area with his brother, Eric and Bhasker. It wasn’t what he wanted exactly, but at

14

least he was earning money from his musical ability and, as it turned out, success wasn’t far off. Lawrence was advised by Keith Harris, better known as the drummer with The Black Eyed Peas, to meet up with Mars. Lawrence seemed impressed and he and Harris collaborated on ‘Lost’ which was intended as a springboard for Mars but, when they were offered $20,000 for it by Brandon Creed, who was managing the reunion of boy band, Menudo, they had no choice but to accept it. Lawrence was so poor that he had to be reimbursed for his bus fares to Harris’s house and this windfall allowed him to continue working in the music business. Lawrence hit it off with Mars and the pair agreed that they would write and produce material for other artists. Mars’s next spectacular piece of good fortune came in 2006, when Lawrence introduced him to Aaron Bay-Schuck, who would later become his A&R representative at Atlantic Records. Bay-Schuck wanted to sign him straight away but the bosses at Atlantic were more cautious, saying that they wanted to allow Mars more time to develop as an artist and, in the end, it took them three years to come up with a contract. Not even remotely fazed, Mars continued to work as a songwriter, coming up with numbers for Alexandra Burke, Brandy, Travie McCoy, Flo Rida, CeeLo Green, Sean Kingston, Adam Levine and The Sugababes among others. He also provided backing vocals on various albums, keeping his hand in as a performer. In 2009 he also co-founded The Smeezingtons, who would ultimately be responsible for hits like ‘Nothin’ on You’ by B.o.B and ‘Billionaire’ by Travie McCoy. Yet it was 2010 that would prove to be the breakthrough for Bruno Mars. Now a bona fide artist with a recording contract he released his first album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans and its first

single, ‘Just the Way You Are’ quickly reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100. The second single, ‘Grenade’ also fared well and by the time the third release, ‘The Lazy Song’, hit the charts, Mars’s reputation as pop’s next big thing had already been well and truly guaranteed. Not even an official police caution for possession of cocaine seemed to dent Mars’s carapace as he signed a new publishing deal with BMG Chrysalis US and returned to the studio to record material for his new album which, he announced in 2012, would be called Unorthodox Jukebox which, like Doo-Wops & Hooligans, was backed by an extensive tour. ‘Locked out of Heaven’ and ‘When I Was Your Man’ consolidated his position, while a collaboration with Mark Ronson resulted in 2015’s most successful earworm, ‘Uptown Funk’. It was, at least, a bone for Mars’s growing fanbase, who would have to wait for 2016 to download his next album, 24K Magic. The first single, also entitled ‘24K Magic’ promises to be the first salvo in yet another Bruno Mars musical charm offensive. With his ability to write and produce sterling material for other artists, performance skills that have critics and fans reaching for their comparisons with Michael Jackson and Prince and a voice that can tackle everything from up-tempo numbers to the slowest and least forgiving of ballads, Bruno Mars could well prove to be one of those long-lived music stars whose career spans decades. We might have lost some of music’s brightest talents in 2016 but, in Bruno Mars, we may well have found the answer to the question, “Who’s next?”

Flume - Skin Companion (EP 1) This guy makes great diverse beats which mix natural sounds with synths and his latest work doesn’t disappoint. These four tracks are great for creating an atmosphere, especially TRUST featuring Isabella Manfredi, which is interestingly quirky.

3

Curous - Breath Again (Experimental) Awesome song with a unique flow and vibe that’s hard to explain. The only way to understand it properly is by listening to it!

4

Tove Lo - Lady Wood (Album) This girl is everywhere right now. The production values on this album are really top notch and it’s filled with radio hits. You can be sure that you will be hearing some tracks from this on the radio and in the clubs in 2017.

5 6 16

The Weeknd - Starboy (Album) The Weeknd is back again. This album is a lot more 80s/funk than his previous offering, but it’s still great. Best track for us is ‘Party Monster’.

J Balvin & Pharrell - Safari (Latin) Great Latin style track for the clubs. Unexpected stuff from Pharrell, but then you never know what that guy is going to do next, other than the fact that it will probably be a huge hit. Keep an ear open for this track this winter! Kwabs - Fight For Love (Blonde remix) (Dance) Kwabs delivers great vocals as usual and Blonde makes an awesome remix! This is bound to get them all going off in the clubs.

The Girl Before

On a planet where violence and vengeance rule, everyone develops a currentgift, a unique power meant to shape the future. While most benefit from their currentgifts, Akos and Cyra do not – their gifts make them vulnerable to others’ control. Can they reset the balance of power in this world?

Enter the world of One Folgate Street and discover perfection - but can you pay the price?

by Veronica Roth

by J.P. Delaney

Akos is from the peace-loving nation of Thuvhe. Though protected by his unusual currentgift, once Akos and his brother are captured by enemy Shotet soldiers, Akos is desperate to get his brother out alive – no matter what the cost.

Jane stumbles on the rental opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to live in a beautiful ultraminimalist house designed by an enigmatic architect, on condition she abides by a long list of exacting rules. After moving in, she discovers that a previous tenant, Emma, met a mysterious death there - and starts to wonder if her own story will be a re-run of the girl before. As twist after twist catches the reader off guard, Emma’s past and Jane’s present become inexorably entwined.

When Akos is thrust into Cyra’s world, the enmity between their countries and families seems insurmountable. They must decide to help each other to survive – or destroy one another.

Following in the footsteps of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train, The Girl Before is being brought to the big screen.

Cyra is the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules the Shotet people and her currentgift gives her pain and power – something her brother exploits, using her to torture his enemies. But Cyra is much more than just a blade in her brother’s hand.

Finland

The Finns gained independence in 1917, so next year will be a centenary celebration in this progressive northern European country. Nepal

A visit to the ‘roof of the world’ promises to be a memorable experience. The country suffered a devastating earthquake last year, but many visitors in 2016 report that the resilience of the Nepalese has ensured that visitors can still expect the traditional warm welcome and hospitality whilst on holiday. Hikers will be delighted to know that the main trails were not destroyed and many of its most beautiful temples escaped with only minor damage. Visiting Nepal will help the local economy and help its people rebuild. There are plenty of luxury places to stay in Kathmandu including a Radisson and the Hotel Yak and Yeti Resort with spa and tennis courts.

Oman

Everybody goes to Dubai, so dare to be different and choose neighbouring Oman instead. Its capital Muscat is described as “alluring” and its vast Grand Mosque is a mesmerising sight. Luxury accommodation is widely available, including a Six Senses resort in the Hajar Mountains, and in 2017 Anantara and Kempinski hotels will be opening in Oman. Also, opening in 2017 – the $120 million Majarat Oman, futuristic theme park, which makes this country a potential holiday destination for families.

Snowdonia, North Wales

This is a destination for anyone who loves harmonious scenery and walking. It is also one of the top European destinations for extreme sport enthusiasts. Surf Snowdonia, an inland lagoon, creates the ‘longest, surfable human-made waves.” Or, there is Zip World at Penrhyn Quarry, which has the world’s fastest zipline, and if you’re a trampolining enthusiast, or have kids who love it, there is a cave below Blaenau Ffestiniog called Bounce Below. But, beyond these there is Snowdonia National Park, a “dark-sky reserve” for stargazers and lovers of magnificent scenery.

Ethiopia

Exotic, different and it has 13 months in a year. Outside the dynamic capital Addis Ababa, there is a landscape teeming with wildlife and trekking through the Simien Mountains will brings sights that you won’t see anywhere else. Boating on Lake Tana, visiting a church carved into a cliff face in Tigray are among the other delights of Ethiopia. A number of new airline routes are opening in 2017, making it even more accessible.

Colombia

In the past you were either mad or under 30 if you travelled to Colombia, but the years of civil war and violent crime are receding into history. With Pacific and Caribbean coastlines, this country offers great hospitality, stunning landscapes and a vibrant culture. The Pope is visiting in 2017 – you could join him in Bogotá!

Perak, Malaysia

This state is in northwest Malaysia is renowned for its capital Ipoh, which boasts quaint streets filled with “vintage-style cafes and boutiques.” There is a lot of “oldmeets-new” in this vibrant city. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a holiday in Malaysia’s natural wonderland, visit Pangkor Island, which is offering sustainable nature hikes with guides thanks to a mentoring scheme. It’s a long awaited change in a destination that has for too long only been seen as a sunbathers’ paradise.

Canada

Justin Trudeau has done quite a lot to generate interest in a country that many people saw as a place to emigrate to rather than a holiday destination. Be a trendsetter and visit one of its dynamic cities or its ski resort at Whistler in the year Canada marks its 150 years since confederation. There’s going to be some big celebrations. The weak Canadian dollar also offers overseas visitors an opportunity to explore the country’s fusion cuisine and its “underrated wine.”

21st CENTURY STYLE by KJ Elsdon All but the most grouchy must surely agree that, when it comes to personal freedoms, we have never had it so good. Yet it is equally true that we have never been so lonely. For some of us meeting someone at work, through a hobby or leisure interest or a blind date set up by a friend is still a possibility – but what if you find yourself drifting into your thirties or forties without encountering a potential partner? This is when an increasing number of people find themselves turning to a dating website.

Y

ou’ve ditched the concept of meeting someone’s eyes across a crowded room and falling hopelessly in love with them and dismissed the idea of doing any more frog-snogging in the hope of finding your handsome prince. But, relax - if good fortune has completely let you down there is still something that you can do to find your ideal partner. Adopt a more scientific approach and join a dating website. The

vagaries of modern life have resulted in more and more people putting their faith in the internet, not least Spain, which apparently has the tenth highest number of Tinder users in the world.

In the past ‘Lonely Hearts’ agencies have had a pretty unenviable reputation of being the last resort of the socially excluded, but times have changed and now the most successful and attractive of singletons are turning to agencies like Match, Harmony, OkCupid and Plenty of Fish to find love. Online dating is a huge industry which seems to be getting bigger every year. Some of the more reputable sites require subscriptions and ask users to fill in lengthy questionnaires to ensure that any suggested matches share the same values, belief systems and aims, which doesn’t guarantee that every date will be a huge success, but nonetheless ensures that ardent atheists aren’t teamed with born-again Christians. People prepared to pay a hefty fee are generally joining the process for a long-term gain, but some sites tend to be geared more to the carefree user, which is where a little research pays dividends. What are you really expecting from your

22

experience? It might come as a nasty surprise to discover that you are looking for a serious relationship with someone who is using the same site merely as a way of avoiding the charges that a prostitute would expect. Don’t let this put you off though; with a little research you should be able to weed out the seekers of cheap thrills and give yourself a better chance of finding something a little more substantial. Since the industry has become more popular there are opportunities to join a specialist dating site aimed at older people, professionals and those who consider themselves to be extremely physically attractive. There really is something for everyone. Of course, the first thing that you need to pay attention to is your profile photograph. Obviously

RELATIONSHIP EXPERTS REVEAL THAT IT CAN TAKE SOME PEOPLE 30 DATES BEFORE THEY FIND THE RIGHT PERSON we’re not all blessed with movie star looks but it does pay to put your best face forward! The best way to tackle this is by looking directly into the camera and smiling, preferably showing your teeth. People who adopt this approach are generally more successful in gaining responses, probably because their photographs give the impression that they are making eye contact with the viewer. You don’t have to look like Tom Cruise or Angelina Jolie – it’s highly likely that other users don’t either – but

you do need to look fun, friendly and approachable. The second most important aspect of your online persona is your written profile. This is your chance to decide which aspects of yourself you want to emphasise in order to attract someone similar. Obviously, if you’re looking for someone who shares your love of sporting activities then you can afford to be quite specific about what you most enjoy doing in your spare time (apparently two of the most used words are ‘yoga’ and ‘surfing’). If you favour brains over brawn then this is a golden opportunity to rule out the more mentally challenged subscribers. Just remember to be brief and to the point. Don’t be too open when you’re online and bear in mind that revealing details like your job title and place of work

can potentially leave you vulnerable to cyber attack. Don’t be too specific with your information and try to avoid being ‘Google-able’ from the information that you give on your written profile. If you want to get the most out of your online dating experience, don’t be shy. This isn’t the nineteenth century and you are not the heroine of a Georgette Heyer novel. In other words, there is no need to wait to be contacted – sit down and write a standard note of introduction that you can use to send to profiles that interest you. Don’t worry, when you have finally found the person of your dreams nobody is going to be scoring points on who first got in touch! It is a proven fact that, as with most things in life, the more effort that you put in, the more satisfactory results you will receive. Do you find Sunday the most boring and dispiriting day of the week? If so, there is good news, because this is also the most active day for online dating sites. Instead of watching hours of catch-up TV or checking the cat for fleas, do something positive about your life and spend some time having a serious look at your chosen site. You will find that many people upload their profiles at the weekend so, even if you feel that you have seen all there is to see, you can pretty much guarantee that you will find new material if you take the time to look on a Sunday. If you’re prepared to be hard-headed and determined enough to look for love online, you should also be sufficiently practical to keep your options open. Don’t worry, you can be sure that the people that you are contacting are also not confining themselves to opening up conversations with just one person at a time either. Finally, the most important thing is not to feel discouraged because you will, almost certainly, experience some disappointments along the way to finding love. Some contacts will seem ideal on paper but fail to match up in real life, others will have lied (it is permissible to select a flattering profile picture, but not to Photoshop it beyond all recognition!) and the process can be a long and, occasionally, unrewarding one. Relationship experts reveal that it can take some people 30 dates before they find the right person, so don’t expect any miracles. If you have decided that 2017 will be the year in which you finally find love, then choose your dating site, prepare your profile and get ready to do some serious work. Good luck!

THE POWER OF

Human Engagement I

n this ever evolving world we are experiencing more changes in our lifetime than ever before and a greater number of changes require greater adaptability. Gone are the days of set gender roles. Gone are the days, for most, of staying in one job for one company for one’s entire career. Maybe you are looking to change your career for some reason or maybe you’ve had children and after time at home are looking to embark upon a new career? It can all be very daunting for some and consequently some people remain where they are for perhaps too long resulting in low moods and depression. Such negative consequences inevitably affect one’s partner and/or family and the ripple effect can begin to envelop us in such a way that we can begin questioning our relationships and ourselves.

If you want to embark upon a path of great change, emotional support from your partner or someone else if you’re single, is extremely powerful. It helps us in a multitude of ways including: •holding ourselves accountable to someone for constantly progressing. •having someone as a sounding board to help us clarify our thoughts and intended actions. •having someone to demonstrate their belief in us when our self-belief is taking a dip.

The results indicated that by the end of the two-year programme “…about 40 percent were engaged in and regularly attending school— a 135 percent improvement over baseline behavior. Incidence of tardiness also declined dramatically.” 24

Motivation Research On School Children

Interestingly, research on school students’ relationships revealed that students are less likely to drop out of school and more likely to feel positive about school when they have ongoing relationships with teachers. In one study cited by Susan Headden and Sarah McKay in their 2015 report published on the Carnegie Foundation’s website, chronically-absent students were paired with a mentor for two years as part of a programme to help build these students’ attendance and engagement. The results indicated that by the end of the two-year programme “…about 40 percent were engaged in and regularly attending school - a 135 per cent improvement over baseline behaviour. Incidence of tardiness also declined dramatically.”

Wow! A big improvement. Though this study was conducted on young school children, it’s probably fair to expect some of these same effects in the adult world. When people show they care for us, at a very basic level it suggests that we must be worthy of that care and could thus influence how we then go on to care for ourselves. Messages we absorb about ourselves are very powerful. If our spouse emotionally supports us in reaching a stated goal by suggesting to us that they believe in us and want to help us, then we are ushered towards self-belief and motivated behaviours, goal-seeking behaviours.

If Your Spouse Isn’t Supporting You

If your spouse isn’t being supportive, ask them what would need to happen in order for them to support you. Their response may shed some light on their reasons for being unsupportive. •Maybe they did not realise you were looking for support prior to you asking the question. •Maybe they have seen you toy with so many ideas and are waiting to see you progress one idea before they become invested in helping you along your path. •Maybe they’ve been so caught up in their own goals and desires that they’ve overlooked the importance of supporting you.

Let your spouse know that if they can engage with you by supporting you in your quest, you’ll feel more motivated to work through the obstacles and have greater resolve to achieve the changes you’re seeking.

If You’ve Realised Your Spouse Is Floundering And Wants Your Support

If you’ve come to the realisation that your spouse is unhappy with their life and wants to make some changes, help them. •Help them to clarify what sort of changes they want to bring about. •Engage them in conversations that help them to find the answers for themselves so that they feel empowered and so that they are achieving what they want to achieve, not what you think they want to achieve or should achieve. •Check in with them every so often at a pace that feels right for them (ask them when they’d like a follow-up chat). •Use motivating sentiments such as, “I believe you can do it”, “You’ll find the answers if you keep searching”, “I want you to make choices that make you happy”, “I’m here to help you whenever you need it”, “You deserve to be incredibly happy”, “I’m really proud of all the progress you’re making” and so on.

Always be genuinely uplifting because fake sentiments will only mean that your power as spouse to engage and uplift will be severely handicapped. Spouses are our teammates for life, which means it is our duty to support and protect one another wherever appropriate. When you do, you both reap rewards and when you don’t, you both reap dissatisfaction.

Students are less likely to drop out of school and more likely to feel positive about school when they have ongoing relationships with teachers. If you and your partner are not married but intend to be, or never intend to marry but do want to spend your life together, the above still applies. If you do not have anyone in your personal life who can provide such support, no friends or family, it is worth considering which professionals may be able to mentor or coach you along your journey so that they too can help you to hold yourself accountable, gain clarity and develop self-belief. Like the children in the study mentioned above, humans who have a genuine desire to achieve a goal, tend to be more motivated when they receive healthy messages about their worth and engaged support from well-meaning people. There is something magical about the power of human relationships and they often assist us in seeing ourselves as others see us, even when we have lost sight of ourselves.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

W

e all know how important it is to feel confident about our smiles. Having nice-shaped teeth can build up our self-esteem and that then translates into every aspect of our lives. That is why cosmetic dentistry has become such a highly valued part of dental care nowadays. We all want to have perfect smiles and there is one doctor in Marbella that can provide you with one; the Ocean Clinic cosmetic dentistry specialist Dr Paul Arts. But, he goes one step further and compares this part of dental care with art. This idea might seem curious, but in fact it is quite sound. Dr Arts is not only

a dentist but also an artist.

Literally. He was very proud to show Society Magazine his portfolio and let us say he has reasons to feel that pride. His beautiful portraits show a concern to portray beauty in many of its forms. This philosophy can also be applied to his work in dentistry. The only difference between the processes is that in his dental career the canvases are teeth, but the result is equally amazing and in some cases life changing. When I ask the doctor about his first experiences in the world of cosmetic dentistry, he quickly remembers his very

first client: “He was a friend of mine and a doctor. He needed to speak a lot in front of the public but he didn’t like his teeth. I would have never thought that he would ask for cosmetic dentistry, but he did, and after we were finished with the entire process he told me, ‘Paul, let me go to my car. I’ve got some bottles of wine to thank you.’ So, he went out, but he didn’t come back. I went out then to check that nothing had happened to him and I found him in his car crying his eyes out. He said, ‘I have wanted this my whole life. I have always been ashamed of my teeth.’ I found that so remarkable that such a composed personality could be so uplifted by having new teeth.” Still, the doctor is clear when he points out that a new set of teeth is not going

to make every problem disappear. What they can certainly improve is the patient’s attitude towards those problems and confront them. I wanted to know then what are the main techniques that he usually carries out in Ocean Clinic and which are the most requested treatments. Dr Arts is quick to answer: veneers, crowns and whitening. Veneers are his leading treatment at the moment and the one that he recommends the most. This treatment consists of placing a porcelain facing on to the front part of the tooth. The facing can also be made of composites, but Dr Arts specially recommends porcelain for its reliability and durability: “Porcelain will never discolour. I always tell my patients that if someone finds their skulls in five hundred years it will still be a skull with perfect white teeth.”

OCEAN CLINIC WILL OFFER THE POSSIBILITY OF HAVING SMALL, PLASTIC VENEERS MADE THAT EACH CLIENT CAN TAKE HOME AND TRY BEFORE THEY GET THE MORE PERMANENT TREATMENT The transformations that Paul Arts can perform with a person’s teeth are remarkable. All his patients end up showing a genuinely happy smile to the world. No matter what treatment he performs. But he still recommends never neglecting a proper cleaning, declaring that, “The most underestimated form of cosmetic dentistry is proper and regular cleaning.” Once we make sure that our dental health is at its best then we can take advantage of all the improvements and leading treatments offered at Ocean Clinic. They are indeed aware of all the current techniques and digital innovations that are taking place in the world of dentistry. Dr Arts tells us some examples of this innovations: “My whole profession is becoming digital. Where we used to make wax simulations of the patient’s teeth, now we perform this part of the treatment with a computer. This is particularly good since the previous process was quite uncomfortable for the client. Now, the computer creates a perfect set of teeth that you can copy on to the veneers.” But, what they are going to offer in the very near future is what amazed us the most. Partly because is a very simple idea that had been ignored for a long time and partly because it will make the process

of getting the perfect set of veneers much easier. In 2017 Ocean Clinic will offer the possibility of having small, plastic veneers made that each client can take home and try before they get the more permanent treatment. Dr Arts believes that patients will appreciate the final result even more if they have the opportunity to ‘test-drive’ their veneers. Dr Arts is indeed very concerned about the aesthetics of his work because they make a great impact in the patients’ lives: “I always emphasizes that before I do my job the teeth have to be healthy and strong and then I make sure they are beautiful.” Paul Arts is also very interested in permaculture. Cosmetic dentistry

can only be perform if the mouth is in a healthy state, and for that we first need to care for it ourselves. Healthy

food choices are also vital for dental health and organically grown fruits and vegetables are also better for your general health. Choosing this type of product is an aspect of permaculture. Dr Arts philosophy comes from first mastering the state of our body by providing healthy fuel for it. Once our body is in the perfect state, we can be sure it is the perfect canvas to become a perfect piece of art. Dr Arts has the power to bring beauty to our teeth in the same way he is able to create beauty in his paintings. But, then I realise that in English his name sounds like the word ‘arts’ and then everything makes much more sense. He is probably meant to contribute bringing beauty to this world and what is more beautiful than a smile? He can create both; smiles on canvas and smiles on us. Ocean Clinic. Annabella Giles has been a health and well-being journalist for more than a decade. Her editorial work takes on areas such as fitness, nutrition, lifestyle, mental health, health care and the latest alternative treatments.

A Healthy

New Year At the start of the New Year many people make resolutions to try and lead healthier lives. Unfortunately, most don’t stick to them. No matter how much you may want to make healthy choices, in reality it can feel like there simply isn’t time. However, being healthier doesn’t have to mean overhauling your entire lifestyle. Start with simple goals, I have listed a few ideas in this article, which are easy to do but will make a major difference to your overall health. Sometimes all it takes is a few simple changes. FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD. Never skip breakfast, even if you don’t feel hungry. You may think it will lead to weight loss, but it’s doing just the opposite. Enjoying a high-protein, highfibre breakfast keeps you energized throughout the morning, while forgetting breakfast actually slows down your metabolism. You are also more likely to show erratic eating patterns throughout the day, eat less nutritious foods and give into junk-food cravings. I like to make a smoothie most mornings as they are a great way for you to get all of your most nutritionally-packed foods into one glass. DRINK UP We all know we should be drinking more water but the truth is most of us don’t get. Given we are about 60 per cent water it makes sense that we need to drink two litres a day, yet putting it into action isn’t always so easy. Try to fill up a water bottle or jug at your desk each morning. If you aren’t a fan of plain water, a few slices of lemon will not only add some refreshing zing to it but the fruit is a good source of vitamin C, calcium, iron, potassium and fibre. Gulping plenty of water prevents headaches, improves your skin, controls your appetite and helps reduce bloating.

BE A BEACH BUM Just because you don’t live at the gym or own your own fitness gear doesn’t mean you can’t stay fit. We have a beach on our doorstep and it doesn’t cost a penny to use it. Walking in sand requires greater effort than walking on a hard surface, since your muscles and tendons will work harder as your foot moves around. Running in the sand is also kinder on the joints than running on pavement because there is less impact on the body. You can take it one step further and take your shoes off, as walking barefoot grounds us. It connects us to nature, which helps reduce stress, plus the feeling of sand beneath your feet and between your toes can be relaxing, soothing and rejuvenating. HAPPY THOUGHTS When you’re trying to make a healthy change, you need a positive perspective and there’s no better way to accomplish this than by making an attempt to feel gratitude. Write down your daily goals. Before you go to bed, write down a goal or inspirational message and tape it to the wall next to your bed so it’s the first thing you see in the morning. Everyday list what you are thankful for. It can be anything from being thankful for having a roof over your head to your daughter telling you she loves you. Whenever you start to think of the things you don’t like about your life, have a look at one of these lists and it will soon change your negative thought pattern.

BREATHE

WE ARE WHAT WE EAT Try to eat as much natural/organic locally sourced food as possible. I know you are going to say, who has time to source all that? Well, I do my weekly shop with andalucia-ecologica.com, I order everything online and it is then delivered straight to my doorstep. They stock everything from fresh organic sea-bass to organic lamb chops and all the fruit and veg you could wish for. If you prefer to pick you own you can find them at EcoMarbella’s stall from Monday to Friday at Marbella Central Market.

SWITCH OFF Put the phone down. We live in a stressed out, isolated society and many of us spend a large part of every day constantly looking at a screen. If this sounds like you, every 20 minutes find a target about 20 feet away and look at it for 20 seconds. This will help readjust your eyes every so often without straining your sight. When trying to unwind before bed give yourself a break from technology and read a book. Expand your knowledge, reduce stress, and briefly cut ties with the internet. Electronics left on while you sleep can disrupt your circadian and melatonin rhythms and make your body think it’s still daytime. LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE Finally, laugh more. If I am feeling stressed or anxious I will switch on a comedy, something like Modern Family and laugh until my stomach hurts. I also have stand-up stored on my iPhone so I can listen to it when I am out and about. You might be surprised to learn that studies have shown that adults who have a sense of humour outlive those who don’t. One of the easiest and most effective ways to boost the chemistry of your body is to laugh. Laughing can cause your body to produce natural painkillers and it also increases the number of infection-fighting antibodies and immune cells.

One slow, deep breath can significantly increase the oxygen levels and vitality of your bloodstream, so imagine what five or 10 deep breaths could do. This sounds way too easy, but most of us forget to breathe, especially while stressed.

Consider adding some type of meditation practice to you day. Before you start rolling your eyes think of it this way: getting oxygen to your blood is about as important as it can be for health. One slow, deep breath can significantly increase the oxygen levels and vitality of your bloodstream, so imagine what five or 10 deep breaths could do. This sounds way too easy, but most of us forget to breathe, especially while stressed. For beginners a fab free app called Calm is a great starting point. You can choose a background scene and a meditation time from one to 20 minutes. Research indicates that mindfulness exercises reduce stress and improve memory, sleep and concentration.

Radio-frequency Ablation Technique for Barrett’s Oesophagus

Doctor Víctor Aguilar Specialist in Gastroenterology

What is Barrett’s Oesophagus? This is a pre-cancerous stage that affects the tissue lining the oesophagus, the tube that carries food and liquid from the mouth to the stomach. Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (ERGE) is a disorder where the stomach acid and enzymes cause lesions in the lining of the oesophagus and generate symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation and chest pain. In some patients the normal oesophageal cells are damaged and, over time, this damage can cause inflammation and genetic changes that provoke cell alteration. The tissue changes its appearance and also microscopically (which results in intestinal metaplasia or Barrett’s Oesophagus). If a patient suffers from ERGE symptoms more than three times per week, he should see his doctor about it. Approximately 13 per cent of patients with ERGE also have Barrett’s Oesophagus.

34

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

GASTRO-OESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE (ERGE) IS A DISORDER WHERE THE STOMACH ACID AND ENZYMES CAUSE LESIONS IN THE LINING OF THE OESOPHAGUS AND GENERATE SYMPTOMS SUCH AS HEARTBURN, REGURGITATION AND CHEST PAIN.

How is Barrett’s Oesophagus diagnosed? It can only be diagnosed with an upper endoscopy and it requires a biopsy of the area where the oesophagus shows inflammation. The discovery of intestinal cells in the oesophagus (intestinal metaplasia) confirms the diagnosis of Barrett’s oesophagus. Different degrees of Barrett: intestinal metaplasia, low-grade dysplasia (this is the beginning of cancer), high-grade dysplasia and oesophageal cancer. The joint recommendations of medical societies indicate that performing upper endoscopies with biopsy on patients with Barrett’s Oesophagus, regularly and for life is recommended. The frequency will be much higher in patients with dysplasia due to the increased risk of developing cancer. In addition to the approaches through endoscopic observation for Barrett’s Oesophagus, there are treatment options that include endoscopic and surgical therapy to remove the Barrett’s tissue completely.

What treatments are available? One of the endoscopic treatment options is the radio-frequency ablation or HALO. This is a technique in which the tissue is heated until it is no longer viable or alive, by delivering heat energy in a precise and controlled manner. The ablation technology HALO achieves the total elimination of the diseased lining tissue without causing any damage to the normal structures nearby. This treatment is undertaken in conjunction with upper endoscopy and it does not need hospitalization nor does it involve incisions. There are two kinds of ablation catheters: HALO 360º and HALO 90º After the procedure, patients may experience chest discomfort and difficulty swallowing for several days, both symptoms of which are treated with medication. FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Matt Roberts is the UK’s leading fitness trainer. He has also written several bestselling books on the subject and worked with celebrity clients such as Tom Ford, Amanda Holden, Trudi Styler, Michael McIntyre, John Galliano, Mel C and The Saturdays. He also acts as a fitness expert for BBC Radio 2, BBC Breakfast, Sky News and frequently writes and runs seasonal promotions for The Times, The Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph.

Dealing with the Fitness Media CONTEXT IS EVERYTHING

I

f you have spent any amount of time browsing through today’s health and fitness media, then it’s likely you will have come across countless promotions selling the next best product or method to get you back into shape. Whether it be the newest superfood or the latest fat-blasting workout, much of this information can end up making most people feel confused or frustrated as they are often littered with contradictions and inconsistencies. The idea here is not to debunk any of these fitness tips as false or wrong (although some of them may well be), it’s more to provide an insight into how the context of this information should always be your number one consideration when applying it to your own life. If we start with the world of nutrition, not many things stand out more in this regard than health or sports drinks and recovery shakes. Many of these products are sold as something that will help you become fitter and healthier, but when you take a closer look they are often only useful in specific situations. When we study these products through the lens of a very active person or an elite athlete who is training upwards of five times a week - and sometimes more than once a day - such drinks can play an important role.

“WHAT’S THE BEST APPROACH? THE ANSWER IS AND ALWAYS SHOULD BE - IT DEPENDS. It depends on who you are, what your goals are, where you are starting from both physically and mentally and, perhaps most importantly, it depends on what methods you feel you can adhere to over the long term.”

38

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

“The energy and recovery demands of a generally active person are often not high enough to rationalise the use of this kind of strategy.” In this context, these individuals use the drinks or shakes as a convenient strategy to meet the extra energy demands of their training and to improve their recovery speed. Many of these types of drinks are designed with this in mind and will contain high amounts of easily absorbed sugar and extra calories, which in this situation could be considered valuable. However, when we put this into the context of someone who more closely resembles the general population, the benefits of these drinks can easily be misinterpreted. For the average health conscious person looking to lose a bit of weight, such a product will only end up adding unwanted calories to their diet. The energy and recovery demands of a generally active person are often not high enough to rationalise the use of this kind of strategy. Additionally, many people fall into the trap of using these products in lieu of quality whole foods and even drinking them without having exercised. In this context these products end up being far from healthy. We can also apply this principle to the world of exercise. Over the last 10 years much of the fitness industry focus on weight loss training has been on short, high intensity, no pain no gain style workouts. Now this isn’t necessarily wrong, as there is plenty of science to support this, but again the context of a particular individual’s situation has to be taken into account for this type of exercise to be applicable. On one hand you could have a young professional with an active, sporty, injury free background, looking to fit an exercise regime around their new job so they can drop from 15 to 10 per cent body fat. When they decide to take on this type of training it’s highly likely they will get the results they desire. On the other hand, you could have a sleep deprived, highly stressed father of four who hasn’t moved from his office chair in 15 years and likelihood of the same outcome from this type of physical activity is going to be pretty slim. As with most things in life it’s impossible to take a black and white, one size fits all approach to diet and exercise, despite what most of the fitness media might be telling you. What’s the best approach? The answer is and always should be - it depends. It depends on who you are, what your goals are, where you are starting from both physically and mentally and, perhaps most importantly, it depends on what methods you feel you can adhere to over the long term. Here at Matt Roberts we work hard to ensure that we provide advice and use methods that fit into the context of our client’s goals and also the reality of their world. Our aim is always to help our clients over the long term and to work together to find ways to ensure consistency.

Revolutions Jonathan is seeing in the New Year with his version of a detox. As usual he doesn’t hold back not that we would ever want him to.

The Beauty Barometer

I NEED A GENIE IN A BOTTLE With all this New Year, New Year bxxxxcks going around I thought I might as well write down my wishes for 2017. I would like a cure to be found for hangovers which doesn’t involve not drinking. I hope that Lottie wins her battle with her iPhone addiction. I pray that Nader doesn’t shave his head at all during 2017. With Trump in power we really don’t need Nader looking like a terrorist again. I would like to hang on to my staff a bit better than I did in 2016! I’d love Downton Abbey to come back, but that’s not going to happen is it?

START AS WE MEAN TO GO ON With all the excess of December, January will be spent in rehabilitation until further notice. I will be wrapped up in a menthol blanket, drinking copious amounts of manzanilla tea in a bid to purify my alcohol sodden body, with a view to getting fit. Although it’s only January, my thoughts automatically turn to the summer. Honestly, the state I am in at the moment, my personal trainer Enrico is going to kick my arse. He is really going to have his work cut out this time. Well, he does always tell me how he loves a challenge. While on the subject of getting ready for the summer, if you are thinking of growing your hair, now is the time to start as it allows plenty of time to get your locks in the best condition possible with regular treatments and cuts. Healthy long hair is stunning ratty, split long hair is NOT the look we are going for. If it’s a major colour change you’re after, which will take copious amounts of appointments, again now is

the time to start, while your hair isn’t getting wrecked by the sun, sand and sea. Do it now because, let’s be fair, no-one sets foot outside the house till March.

How I fe el about Gerry’s n ew hair colour!

MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU In those three days of excessive rain many of my close friends and clients were victims of the floods: two had parts of their house destroyed, while another lost her car. My heart goes out to them all. I only suffered having to fork out for two new tyres after driving over small rocks due to a minor landslide where I live. If I dared to feel hard done by, I only had to think of my friends and what they had been through to give me the necessary slap around the face. What was lovely to see was how we all pulled together as a community, which was very much needed during these trying times in the world today. It served to reinforce my faith in human nature.

A LITTLE APPRECIATION GOES A LONG WAY I feel a rant coming on. Clients really need to be more patient with our receptionists. They are doing a difficult job and people need to step back and give them a little more respect. They are constantly dealing with people’s needs, wants and desires and, truthfully, their job is like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Yes, they do make mistakes but they are only human. They get a hell of a lot of flack, but I would defy those people to spend a week in their job, with the phone constantly ringing, greeting clients at the front desk, trying to juggle appointments, making sure everything runs smoothly and please everyone at the same time. And all this while trying to remain bright and bubbly. I wouldn’t last five minutes on reception, due to my anger issues and lack of patience. In addition to all the work the receptionist is already assigned, people assume the person at the front desk does nothing - yes, people have actually said to me that they wished they had a job as a receptionist because apparently it means you get to do nothing but sit around and relax all day. Yet, in reality, they are the stitching that holds a salon together, emotionally and administratively.

I bought Nader a pair of earmuffs for Christmas to FINALLY stop him listening to my conversations with my clients.

My pet peeve is when you get certain clients who claim they HAVE made an appointment and blatantly have not, but play this game in a bid to secure one. It’s not clever and you are not fooling anyone and it REALLY annoys our reception team. The rule of thumb should be, do not anger the receptionist, they have an awful lot of power, even Lottie. If you find you can’t get in with your favourite stylist and are constantly being told ‘no’ by reception for weeks on end, maybe have a think about whether you have done anything to upset the receptionist at some point.

GIVE ME STRENGTH

I need to talk about the colour of Gerry’s hair. HAVE YOU SEEN IT? He keeps telling everyone he hasn’t done anything to it, but he was seen in Mercadona buying an unbranded box of at-home hair-dye, which is akin to sun-in from the eighties. He has obviously sprayed it in his hair and now looks like an extra from a 1980s music video. All he needs now is a perm, white socks and tasselled moccasin slip-ons.

Ta-ra!

THE HEMLINE INDEX

Chic Happens

FINANCIAL FACT OR FASHION FICTION?

E

By Eleanor McKenzie

conomist George Taylor first coined the nomenclature The Hemline Index in 1926. He asserted that during times of economic prosperity skirt lengths shortened and during less prosperous times hemlines start to fall like a stock market index. Since then, the Hemline Index has been used as a barometer of financial health even if its accuracy is called into question, with a number of critics from academic and

economics backgrounds labelling it an ‘urban myth’. Skirt lengths may not be an accurate gauge of the world economy, but as Jo Ellison pointed out in the Financial Times ahead of summer 2015 fashion collections: “It’s perhaps mere coincidence then, that in the week the Conservative government prepared to usher in a new wave of austerity cuts and the world watched Greece play brinkmanship with the IMF, the maxi skirt emerged as 2015’s most significant trend.” The maxi trend of 2015 started at the Louis Vuitton Cruise Show, followed by a similar event hosted by Dior, where a silk maxi dress was the star of the show. Suddenly, longer dresses started appearing everywhere, from haute couture to the high street. Popular online retailer Net-a-Porter, whose fans include the Duchess of Cambridge,

offered three times as many long length skirts in its store during the summer of 2015 as it did in the previous year. It’s just a fashion trend, you may argue. Yes, but fashion does reflect the prevailing cultural mood, so perhaps there is something in it, even if it isn’t an exact science. The attraction of the maxi-length skirt or dress for many women is that it gives both a feminine and romantic look whilst covering up legs that we may be less than thrilled with. It’s a length that is more associated with evening wear, but the 2015 trend made it appropriate for day or night, beach or ballroom. However, researchers at the Erasmus School of Economics, claimed that the trend wasn’t necessarily an indicator of financial gloom and reported: “The main finding is that the urban legend holds true but with a time lag of about three years.” In other words, we should have started wearing long skirts around 2011.

The Roaring 20s

It’s perhaps mere coincidence then, that in the week the Conservative government prepared to usher in a new wave of austerity cuts, the maxi skirt emerged as 2015’s most significant trend.

Hemlines VS The Dow Jones A comparison of trends in the movement of the Dow Jones Index and skirt lengths shows why the Hemline Index has retained belief in it. It may well be that the hemline trend trails behind the economic data, but there is a compelling series of coincidences that would seem to elevate it beyond being merely ‘fashion fiction’. In the hedonistic Roaring Twenties, around 1925, ‘Flappers’ made the shorter hemline fashionable and widely accepted after centuries of women wearing skirts that swept the floor. In part a response to the devastating effects of the First World War, the cropped hair styles and short dresses spelt out a message of liberation and optimism. However, after the Wall Street crash of 1929, hemlines fell during the 1930s and only really rose again substantially after 1945 when Dior introduced his New Look. Amidst the depression and global wars of the 30s and early 40s hemlines rose and fell, but only by a few inches, and whilst the Fifties opted for a conservative just below the knee length that reflected an economy that was still slowly but steadily strengthening, the upward climb of the Dow Jones from the 50s into the 60s, was greeted by the arrival of the mini skirt and a fashion revolution that had a very modern selfassurance. The 1970s weren’t quite so confident

economically with oil crises plaguing the world, reflected in the midi skirt, which is a length that lacks conviction, if you think about it. But, by the time the 1980s had started and the Dow Jones was cruising upwards, the hemline went up along with it. Those who remember “Dallas” will also recall that it was a time of big hair, shoulder pads, ra-ra skirts, spandex leggings and leg warmers. But, at the end of the 1980s there was a financial crash (remember Black Monday?) and hems fell as the West and many other parts of the world went into a recession. Not that Madonna noticed, because that’s when she went on her Blonde Ambition tour in ‘that’ cone bra outfit designed by Jean Paul Gaulthier.

that really seemed to promise younger entrepreneurs a new outlet. But, if anyone thought this was a disaster then the attacks in the USA on 9/11 took it to another level. Since then, we have been through another global recession and an accompanying fashion style that has been called ‘mash-up’. Retro Indie looks met hip-hop and people over 25 opted for a ‘smart-casual’ style with ethnic flourishes as a nod to globalisation. There was also a 1980s revival with the return of leggings and the arrival of jeggings in 2008. And most importantly, mini skirts were replaced with slightly longer skater dresses and bubble skirts.

In 2016, the hemlines on the runway veered from ankle length to those that On the 90s high street, fashion became skimmed the top of the thighs. The autumn quirky and eclectic with T-shirts sporting collections are awash with fur and velvet political messages, harem pants and fabrics and the variety of hemlines doesn’t crop tops, and skirts got shorter again as appear to have confidence started to boom towards the decisively moved in end of the decade. The Dot Com boom, one direction or the other. So, without lengths for some time looking at the economic to come. factors, fashion-wise it Economy picks up seems like everyone was feeling financially secure by the time of the new millennium. And then s**t happened in 2001. Just when everyone thought they could make a fortune online, the Dot Com Bubble burst as its companies were shown to have over-valued themselves. That was a blow to a new economy

THE PAPAL BULL REFORMING THE CALENDAR WAS SWIFTLY ADOPTED BY CATHOLIC COUNTRIES SUCH AS SPAIN AND PORTUGAL, BUT PROTESTANT COUNTRIES REGARDED IT AS SOME FORM OF CATHOLIC PLOT. THIS, OF COURSE, WAS PROVED WHEN ON THE 2ND SEPTEMBER 1752 BRITAIN ADOPTED IT. PEOPLE WENT TO BED ON THE 2ND, AND WOKE UP ON THE 14TH!

B

achelors can once again breathe easily. 2016 is past and gone. It was a leap year. One of those years in which a young lady may, with all propriety, propose marriage to the swain of her choice. If he refuses, he has to present her with a gift; in some parts of Europe it is twelve pairs of gloves. The idea here is that the rejected maiden can wear them to hide the embarrassment of not having a ring on her finger. (Having said that, the Greeks consider it unlucky to be actually married during a leap year, and especially upon February 29th itself!) We can blame the 5th century Irish Saint Brigid of Kildare for this Leap Year custom. She complained to Saint Patrick that men were taking far too long to propose, and so the Patron Saint of Ireland decreed that on one day of the year, the odd one, women could propose to men. The custom was taken to Scotland by monks, and in 1288 it passed into Scottish law, with the proviso that any maid doing the proposing should wear red petticoats whilst doing so.(Has this law been repealed?!) The day itself made its first appearance under Julius Cæsar. Under the Roman calendar the year consisted of 355 days. This did not exactly correspond to the earth’s rotation round the sun, and the seasons occasionally fell out of kilter. To remedy this, priests from time to time added a “leap month”. This was clearly unsatisfactory as during periods of civil unrest, or if the priests disliked whoever happened to be ruling at the time, the additional months could be overlooked, with the result, for example, that summer festivals suddenly found themselves being celebrated during the spring. Greek astronomers since the time of Hipparchus (190BC-120BC) had realised that the solar year is roughly 365.25 days in length, and so in 46 BC Julius Cæsar decided to take action, and the “Julian Calendar” emerged. This resulted in a year of 365 days, but at the same time it

was realised that as this was inaccurate, an extra quarter of a day was required to balance things up. Cæsar therefore decided to add an additional day “ante diem bis sextum kalendas Martias” (a second sixth day before the first day of March), which actually fell on the 24th February. To this day this is the official day added to the calendar, although for convenience sake the day is merely added on to the end of the month. In Denmark, however, February 24th rather than the 29th is the day upon which women can propose to men. And until 1970 Saint Matthias day was celebrated in the Catholic Church on February 24th in a normal year and February 25th in a Leap Year. When the Julian Calendar was first implemented, however, in 45BC, that year was 445 days long. Julius Cæsar himself proudly declared that it was “ulimus annus confusionis”(the last year of confusion). The Roman citizens, having to live through it, merely dropped the “ultimus” and declared it to be “The Year of Confusion”. It was, of course, in March 44BC that Julius Cæsar was assassinated, although it is doubtful that the confusion of the previous year had anything to do with it. But the confusion surrounding the introduction of the Julian Calendar lingered. Against the solar year it gains a day every 128 years, or roughly three days in four centuries. By the sixteenth century this was becoming noticeable, and in the 1570s Pope Gregory XIII (1502-1585), a graduate of the oldest university in the world (Bologna, founded 1088), decided to take action. He consulted the astronomer and chronologist Aloysius Lilius (1510-1576). Lilius did not live to see the result of his work, the so-called “Gregorian Calendar”, which was promulgated in 1582. The difference in the average length of the year between the Julian

and the Gregorian calendar is 0.002%. This may seem minor, but in the Gregorian calendar as opposed to the Julian calendar, Leap Years are not those divisible by 100, but by 4.(If, however, the year is also divisible by 100, then it is not a Leap Year. Complicated, eh?!) This difference means that until the 28th February 2100 the Julian Calendar is 13 days behind the Gregorian. Having said that, the Gregorian Calendar is still “off” by 26 seconds a year, which means that by the year 4909 the calendar will be a full day ahead of the solar year. Most branches of the Eastern (Greek) Orthodox Church still adhere to the Julian Calendar, which explains why there is often a difference in the observation of such feasts as Christmas (celebrated “old style” on January 7th) and Easter (which can differ by as much as a month). Uproar followed, with riots, as people demanded “Give us back our eleven days!” Benjamin Franklin, however, doubtless with tongue in cheek, wrote “It is pleasant for an old man to be able to go to bed on September 2nd, and not to have to get up until September 14th”. It was also in this year that Britain adopted January 1st as New Year’s Day as opposed to March 25th, the Feast of the Annunciation (Lady Day). This was a reversion to the old Julian practice, as March 25th had been adopted by Pope Gregory for religious purposes. (Incidentally, from the religious point of view, February 29th is Saint Oswald’s Day (d992AD)A Dane by birth, he was an Archbishop of York who did much to revive English monasticism. In “normal” years, he is celebrated on February 28th; the same problem faced by those born on the 29th.

New Year

?

- new beginnings

The beginning of a New Year signals a fresh start for many, but regrettably January is also the month of the year when solicitors see a spike in enquiries about divorce. Some legal firms claim that business can double at this time of the year as couples struggle to get over a difficult festive period.

A

relationship that may already be under pressure can buckle under the strain of spending more time together during the holidays. Often the wish to spare children and relatives additional problems over Christmas results in a delay in filing for divorce until the first working days of January which leads to a sharp rise in enquiries to lawyers. Incompatibility and arguments are not always the reason why couples aren’t able to stay together. Conflict Marbella, the dedicated consultancy service in the region from Conflict International, has wide experience in uncovering marital infidelity. From their head office in London, they specialise in providing bespoke intelligence, investigation, security and risk advice services to clients worldwide. Director Mike LaCorte says if someone has suspicions about the behaviour of their spouse it makes sense to get to the truth. “It’s

important that if you believe your partner is hiding a secret relationship, that you get expert help in either confirming or allaying your suspicions.

No-fault divorces in Spain Official figures state around one in eight divorces in the UK are triggered by adultery. In Spain, it isn’t necessary to cite a reason to be granted a divorce so comparable data isn’t available, however since it was introduced in 1981, the rate of divorce has risen steadily and is now above the EU average. Conflict’s specialist teams have decades of experience in providing discreet assistance in matrimonial, infidelity and child custody matters. Covert surveillance teams can obtain evidential footage of matrimonial infidelity taking place and ensure that any evidence gathered is compiled in accordance with current legislation making it fully admissible in court.

Good legal advice is vital Conflict Marbella can also advise you if you do not yet have a legal team in place as they have close links with a number of specialist divorce lawyers in a number of countries. Having the correct legal advice is vital if you and/ or your spouse are not living in your country of birth. It is currently possible to file for divorce in Spain if you and your spouse are not Spanish nationals but are both resident here at the time of filing. It is also legal to apply if one of you is a Spanish national. Mike says: “Spanish law differs from the UK in a number of respects when it comes to divorce so it is important to take advice, especially if you have property in more than one country.” “Some of our clients do not always have full details of their partner’s assets which might be spread over a number

of countries. We specialise in tracing and identifying ownership of assets so they can considered in divorce cases. Our network of forensic accountants in most parts of the world follow sometimes complex trails to uncover hidden assets and then our investigators explore avenues to confirm ownership.” Thankfully, many divorces are settled amicably but where significant wealth is at stake not only can problems be extremely draining emotionally and financially but they also have the potential to damage careers. If a nagging doubt remains about fidelity or hidden assets, it is important to talk to experienced professionals who can get to the heart of the matter so you can move on with your life.

TORQUE TALK

F

our years before the 1985 debut of the first BMW M5 (E28) I had the chance to drive the original first generation BMW 535i (E12). The 218hp big block 3.5 litre straight-six in a relatively compact mid-sized saloon, coupled to a close ratio Getrag gearbox with dogleg first gear and 25% limited-slip differential were the recipe for a big adrenalin hit, and I was smitten. Fast forward to November 2016, and as I stepped into the BMW Classic division’s immaculate 20,000km 535i, memories from over a quarter of a century ago came flooding back. Out on the relatively deserted Portuguese hill roads, the now sixgeneration old 535i rapidly rekindled an old flame. Relatively light, agile and possessed of a directness missing from most modern cars, this totally analogue machine once again put a big smile on my face. In some ways, the all-new seventh generation 540i (G30) reminds me of that original 535i. Tipping the scales at up to 100kg less than its (F10) predecessor it is still a big, heavy machine compared to its 1980s predecessor. But thanks to the optional Integral Active Steering (IAS) on my test car, it feels as though it has

70

regained some of the agility of its smaller and 165 kg lighter ancestor. Ever since the Audi 100 of 1983 debuted with its headline drag coefficient of 0.3, the major car manufacturers have been in a Cd war. Of course in reality CdA, drag coefficient multiplied by frontal area, is the true benchmark, but the Cd number is the catchier headline. BMW certainly wears the crown in its class now with 0.22 Cd for its forthcoming 520d EfficientDynamics Edition, just edging out the equivalent E200d (0.23 Cd) for class honours. Wearing 17-inch wheels, and employing every aerodynamic trick in the book, this eco special should in theory be capable of eking out 3.7 L/100km or over 70 miles to each gallon of heavy oil.

Since 1972 BMW has sold around 7.9 million 5-Series over six generations. Along with the 3-Series it is their core model and embodies all the values of the brand. The all-new seventh generation 5-Series goes on sale in February 2017 with the 530i, 540i and 520d and 530d in RWD and xDrive form as the debut models, with more engine options to follow. Until the new M5 makes its entrance in late 2017, the range flagship will be the M550i xDrive, whose twin-turbo V8 delivers 462hp and 650Nm of torque. BMW styling traditionally favours revolution with one generation, and evolution for the next.

TORQUE TALK

The new 5-Series is clearly a child of the latter school, and frankly is all the better for it. While some may well criticise Karim Habib’s design team for being too conservative with BMW’s mainstay model, I am of the opinion that even a good basic design needs time to settle and evolve, while a ‘latest, best thing’ can all too easily be born a fashion victim that does not age well.

The ‘air curtains’ in the wheel arches and ‘air breather’ behind the front wheel arches first seen on the current 3-Series and then the new 7-Series helps aerodynamics by managing the air in the front wheel housings and around the front wheels and then venting it to reduce turbulence and drag. This feature is incorporated into the cars flanks as a deliberate part of the design. The ‘Hofmeister kink’ is still there on the C-pillar while the new taillights mimic the design strategy of the fronts by being longer and slimmer as well. Again they help to make the car look lower and wider than the outgoing model.

Both the edgy Bangle-era BMW E60 5-Series and the confused looking pre-facelift Mercedes W212 E-Class fall into the latter category. People either loved or hated their looks, with nothing in The between.

From a practical point of view, the 30mm longer wheelbase helps to provide more rear cabin room, and the new interior offers enough space for someone of 1.85m height, whether occupying the front or rear seats. The spacious 530-litre boot is of a regular shape that avoids wheel arch intrusion. It also has a lower loading lip and larger opening than before, while an optional through-load facility allows the rear seat to fold in a 40:20:40 configuration.

new body-in-white uses an intelligent combination of aluminium, steel and magnesium to achieve low weight and high strength.

Aesthetically there was not much wrong with the outgoing F10 5-Series. With classical proportions, surface treatment and detailing, it still looks good today. However, place it beside the latest car and you instantly see that it was the first step in a design that has clearly evolved in the best way possible. The new machine has a sleeker, tauter look with more modern detailing. While non-car enthusiasts might not immediately recognise it in isolation, this evolutionary design will be obvious to BMW aficionados. The longer, lower profile headlamps with optional LED lights now meet the front grille on each side help to give the car its wider, sportier stance. Look beyond the clear glass and you see layers that give the units depth. The distinctive ‘angel eye’ trademark design has finally departed, replaced by a totally new daytime running light graphic that BMW fans may take some time to get used to.

Where the cabin of the F10 5-Series had its widescreen display integrated below the dashboard top, the new car places it above on a standalone ‘floating’ display in the way that Mercedes do in models up to their C-Class. This has already drawn criticism from the same quarters that lambasted Mercedes for this perceived aesthetic faux pas. However, the fact is that this design brings the screen higher in the driver’s sightline and is therefore less of a distraction from the road.

Importantly, thanks to demand from owners, this big 10.25-inch display is also a touchscreen with important new features. Touch the small icon in the top left-hand corner and you can drag and drop the pages on the screen that you want to be emphasised. Press the Home icon and the screen returns to normal. The instrument pack changes colour according to the driving mode you are in. Red is for Sport and blue for Eco Pro, where the effect that the regenerative braking system has on reserve battery power is also displayed. One very welcome change is the 70% larger graphics for the optional Head Up Display. This, and the improved graphics make the information such as road speed and navigational directions much easier to assimilate under all weather conditions. While this may be a minor thing for most people, the indicator stalk now engages positively like in other cars, whereas on the previous model you flicked it up or down and it returned to centre. Apparently this was not a popular feature with owners who commented on the fact. The new body-in-white uses an intelligent combination of aluminium, steel and magnesium to achieve low weight and high strength. “The right material in the right place, is the engineer’s mantra here, and the new shell is also stiffer, which makes it a good platform for a fine handling and riding car. The petrol-engined 540i I drove first was deeply impressive for its overall balance. The B58 engine family 2,998cc TwinPower Turbo straightsix, which made its debut in the 3-Series is still the benchmark motor of its type, providing power, torque

Where the cabin of the F10 5-Series had its widescreen display integrated below the dashboard top, the new car places it above on a standalone ‘floating’ display in the way that Mercedes do in models up to their C-Class.

and refinement combined with an eagerness to soar to the redline that will please enthusiast drivers. With 340hp from 5,500 to 6,500rpm underpinned by 450Nm of torque between 1,380 and 5,250rpm, the output of this silky smooth six is maximised by the close ratios of the standard eight-speed ZF Steptronic automatic gearbox. Despite its formidable output, this engine has a claimed average fuel consumption of 6.5 L/100km (xDrive 6.9 L/100km), and emits just 149g/km (159g/km) of CO2. Against the stopwatch, the 0-100km/h sprint is covered in a rapid 5.1 sec, with the optional xDrive AWD version chopping 0.3 sec off this thanks to its superior traction. Since my mount for the second day was the 530d xDrive, the rain that started to fall mid-morning was but a minor inconvenience. In the streaming wet conditions, the traction of the xDrive system made exiting T-junctions to fit in with gaps in the traffic no harder than cranking in the appropriate amount of steering and throttle.

Incidentally, the new 5-Series sees the first application of rear wheel steering and 4WD in a production BMW. Both the rear and 4WD versions have variable ratio electric power steering, with the ratios calibrated according to whether the rear axle has the normal or optional rear steering system. The new suspension uses a lot of aluminium in its construction and is 10kg lighter at each end of the car. This lower unsprung weight helps handling and ride as well as acceleration and braking. The front suspension has new kinematics, with its geometry optimised for steering feedback as well as to reduce bump steer and camber changes under load. At the rear, the new forged alloy wishbones have improved geometry and the system is designed to incorporate the rear steering.

Whether in RWD or 4WD form, the 530d’s 2,993cc TwinPower Turbo diesel develops a healthy 265hp at 4,000rpm, along with a thumping 620Nm of torque between 2,000 and 2,500rpm. With the xDrive system always optimising available grip, this smooth oil burner shoves you hard in the back on its way to 100km/h in 5.4 sec, yet overall consumption is a frugal 5.0 L/100km, with C02 emissions of just 132g/km. The above numbers show that while the advent of turbochargers on BMW’s petrol engines has dramatically improved their overall efficiency, the turbocharged diesel still has the edge in torque and fuel economy. That said, the case against diesel particulates is building in many countries, and for better or worse, political momentum may soon overwhelm any worthwhile advances in technology.

Billed as a ‘dynamic business saloon’ the new 5-Series was designed to be the most engaging drivers’ car in this segment while not giving away much if anything in the comfort stakes in the process.

However, BMW said that their Adaptive Damping System offers most of the ride and handling advantages of air suspension without its concomitant weight and complexity. In practise, this works out to be largely true.

The omission of air suspension as an option is initially surprising in the light of how much of an improvement this makes to the ride quality of its rivals from Audi and Mercedes, not to mention their ability to negotiate steep ramps by increasing their ride height at the touch of a button.

In Comfort mode the low speed secondary ride is nicely compliant. Part of this is also down to the fact that rather than impose Runflat tyres on all models barring the M cars, BMW now gives buyers the choice of normal tyres as well. This makes a significant

On the road the steering is a little heavier than the rear-drive only 5-Series and perhaps also a little less informative. Yet, while the combination of rear steering and peerless grip seem ideal on paper, and allow you to really hustle on a twisty road somehow this level of perfection takes away something from the driving experience. In this situation, the enthusiast driver will always lean towards the rear wheel drive version. Being able to throttle steer the car to adjust its cornering attitude when you really start to lean on the very high reserves of this fine chassis simply provides that critical bit more driver satisfaction.

difference to the low speed ride and you can really feel the suspension being able to breathe without compromise over short, sharp low speed bumps. As you go faster, the Sport mode comes into its own, tightening things up to the betterment of body control. I quickly decided that Sport mode was the best all-round setting as it retains good rise comfort while keeping uncomfortable body motion firmly under control.

76

The lower NVH helps you appreciate the excellent Bower & Wilkins audio system that is a cost option. This 10-channel, 16-speaker, 1,400 Watt system has good dynamics, an open and resolving midrange, and can be played pretty loud without distortion or aggressive treble giving your eardrums a hard time. The mid-range systems come from Harman Kardon. The first a nine-channel, 16-speaker, 600 Watt audio system, while the more basic one has an eightchannel amplifier and 12 speakers.

The bog standard BMW system has just six speakers. The new 5-Series goes down the road with the poise and confidence you would expect of BMW’s most important volume model. Importantly, their new mid-range saloon is a more engaging steer than the super competent but rather anodyne E-Class, while its new levels of ride comfort make it a terrific all-rounder. In the end the status quo has been preserved.

REDISCOVERING LA SALA

Photos by Pedro Jaen (on these pages) Photos by Charly Simon (next two pages)

We attended… The re-opening of one of the most famous hot spots on the Marbella scene that has been re decorated and pampered to keep on offering the very faithful clients the best ambience possible. La Sala Banus held two amazing VIP parties, with the attendance of the best referee of the world, Mark Clattenburg, as well as the members of Marbella Town Hall, such as Javier Porcuna and Manuel Osorio to name a few.

We marvelled at…. FOC’s wonderful interior design skills. Hayley Reed and her team have created: a classy but yet daring and funky spot. A place where anyone can enjoy either a relaxed evening with family or a fun night with friends.

We nibbled on… The fantastic canapes served by the La Sala team and the welcoming glass of wine or champagne. The food really was delicious: the sushi selection was supreme, so were the mini burgers that disappeared in seconds from the trays, but cosiest thing was the shepherd’s pie served in little bowls and that was just yummy.

We kicked back… With the live music shows that were going on all night. It made everybody feel happy and festive!!!

Congratulations and big thanks to… The La Sala team who created a phenomenal evening and reminded us yet again that this is the hottest spot in Marbella.

EL LODGE CREATES WINTER WONDERLAND IN MARBELLA We attended… The Lodge event in La Plaza was a ‘Winter Wonderland’ brought to the Puente Romano. The beautiful decorations made everyone feel that the cosiness of winter is finally here.

We adored… The snow machines spreading beautiful snowflakes everywhere, the mulled wine that made everyone feel warm on a cold and rainy night. The food was exquisite and it included a great variety of goodies to please everyone’s tastes. We loved the deserts and the delicate selections of macaroons and raspberries tarts that were the perfect ending to a great meal.

We enjoyed… The relaxed ambience and the fact that everyone put on their best ski outfits to rock this very different kind of Marbella night. We have to admit there were a lot of super stylish skiers over there!

Congratulations and thanks to… The El Lodge team and the Puente Romano. It was a fabulous event and we now know how to wrap up warm when we visit the ski slopes.

A VERY PALI PALI OPENING We attended…

The launch party at Pali Pali, a brand new Korean-style tapas bar that is a mixture of cosy pub and innovative gastro bar.

We marvelled at…

The meticulous work of the chefs, which guests can watch in action thanks to the open kitchen. The ‘tapas’ concept is one that is adaptable to various world cuisines and adding Korean to Marbella’s gastronomic offering is an inspirational idea.

We nibbled on…

The delicious Korean tapas that were truly a delectable experience of sweet and spicy flavours and perfectly accompanied by chilled wine or beer. Our favourites were the spicy chicken and the vegetable bruschetta with soy.

We kicked back…

And enjoyed the relaxed and happy vibe that promises to make Pali Pali a place to meet friends, or watch a football match on one of the bar’s three screens.

Congratulations and a big thanks to…

The team at Pali Pali for such a sensational opening party – we can’t wait to come back!

CHARITY NIGHT AT EL OCEANO We attended…. A charity night at the hotel El Oceano, organised to raise awareness and funds for the orphanage in Málaga. The evening started with a welcoming cocktail followed by dinner, all while enjoying live music and Christmassy vibes.

We were thankful for…. Everyone who attended and contributed to such a noble cause. A total of 10.325€ raised went towards buying Christmas presents for children in Málaga’s orphanages. The guests were excited to be part of this great event, and admired the beautiful decorations and the stunning place chosen for the event. All the guests had made a great effort to dress for the occasion and to bring the festive spirit alive.

We really enjoyed… The superb cocktails that kicked off the event when we took the time to chat and catch up with friends before the more formal dinner.

Special thanks to… The hostess Michelle, Teresa and Esther for organising this event and bringing joy to children in need. They gave us have a great night in exchange for supporting this worthwhile cause.

LA SALA SUPER LEAGUE ENDS 2016 AT SANTANA We attended… The grand finale of the La Sala Super League at the Santana golf course. The teams arrived to fight it out at the last event of the year and, fortunately, the sun was shining and the course was in great condition, even after the storms.

We welcomed… The delicious bacon sandwiches and Buck’s Fizz at the halfway house. There’s nothing quite like a bacon sarnie when the temperatures dip.

We applauded… The team winners of 2016, Forenicate and Luke Woods Jr. the individual winner. The winners received some wonderful prizes including a trip to Portugal, presented by U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell.

We all enjoyed… The fabulous post-game three-course lunch was provided by La Sala Banús in its recently revamped Piano Room.

Congratulations and a big thanks… To the La Sala team for all their hard work during 2016 and the tournament’s sponsors Jackson Grundy and Golfriends, whose generosity throughout the year has ensured the Super League’s continued success. THE EXCLUSIVE PALO ALTO LAUNCH We attended… The breakfast presentation to the press of the Palo Alto project by Round Hill Capital in partnership with Villaroel Torrico architects. Matias Villaroel and the major of Ojén gave speeches about how the project has been developed and the many advantages that such a luxurious residential development will bring to Ojén and Marbella.

We loved… The passion they showed for the project and the exciting way they talked about the creation of a luxurious oasis of quiet amidst beautiful natural surroundings; definitely a place of retreat from the bustling Costa del Sol. The first phase of the project is about to start construction at the beginning of 2017 and 50 percent of it is already sold.

Congratulations to… Round Hill Capital and Villaroel Torrico for your exceptional vision: we cannot help but wish we owned one of these little pieces of heaven!

A FUSION OF NATURE AND MODERN LIFE Luxury development Palo Alto promises light, privacy and space in beautiful Ojén.

O

jén is one of the most attractive villages in the vicinity of Marbella. The tiny ‘pueblo’ has been increasingly attracting an influx of artistic residents, from jewellers and musicians to artists and interior designers, who have found a warm welcome from local inhabitants. Surrounded by a nature reserve and with exceptional views right down to the sea from its mountainside location, it combines a tranquil lifestyle with the buzz one might expect to find in the artistic quarters of a city. Ojén even has its own music festival. Now, Round Hill Capital, a leading global investment firm, is investing 250 million euros in the Palo Alto luxury housing development that will not only bring new householders into the area, it will also generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs. The developers were granted the licence for Phase 1 of the project in November 2016 to proceed with the construction of the luxury properties designed by the prestigious, awardwinning architects Villaroel Torrico.

Founded in 2002, Round Hill Capital has a proven track record in the acquisition and development of luxury properties. It has invested over 6 billion euros in European Real Estate assets and has developed over 100,000 residential apartments in Europe and is currently one of the largest landlords in the Netherlands and CEE region. This solid history provides considerable reassurance and confidence in the project and a good reason to welcome it to the Costa del Sol. José Antonio Gómez Sánchez, mayor of Ojén, Matías Villarroel, architect and developer, all travelled to the site to give the presentation their support. The mayor, Sr. Gómez described Palo Alto as an important project not only for Ojén, but for the whole of the Costa del Sol, due to the fact that “it will invigorate

the area, both socially and economically”. He also talked about the team of architects and developers, praising them for their professionalism and the quality of their work. Villarroel, for his part, alluded to Palo Alto’s slogan: ´Naturally Modern Living´,

Keep It Real

which, according to his presentation, is something that “reflects exactly what we wanted to achieve with this development”. In addition, he explained the reason behind the name Palo Alto - it was chosen in honour of the Pinsapo tree, a native species in the area that will surround the development. Located on the outskirts of the Ojén, this new real estate development will be built on 50 hectares, of which 40% will be comprised of green open space.

Palo Alto’s location makes an immediate impression, offering panoramic views of the sea and mountains, all of which can be enjoyed just four minutes away from the La Cañada shopping centre in Marbella. The plans also

include the restoration of a historic walking trail where residents can walk or go horse-riding. The project, which is in accordance with the PGOU (the municipal town planning agreement) of Ojén, now has a building licence and construction will begin early 2017. With building work planned between early 2017 and autumn 2018, Phase 1 of the 6 phases planned in total for Palo Alto will be made up of 60 apartments of 2, 3 and 4 bedrooms, and 15 penthouses of 3 and 4 bedrooms, all in a tranquil environment surrounded by nature. Additionally, the master plan includes a Health Club for Phase 1, comprised of a state-of-the-art gym, spa, swimming pool, and kids’ club. It also includes a business centre with a concierge service, plus 24-hour security, giving the development a private and exclusive feel. These state-of-the-art apartments range in price from 440,000 to 1 million euros.

The structure of the low-rise apartments and private villas is contemporary in style and in keeping with today’s preference for open-plan living and plenty of light. The design for the exterior landscaping is intended to enhance the beauty of the area and Villarroel Torrico has made plans to plant aromatic plants and deciduous trees in the development which are typical to the area, such as wild gorse bushes. The interiors will be designed to be at one with the natural surroundings of the development, with large rooms, openplan kitchens

and panoramic views, where the latest technology will be at the resident’s disposal in a relaxing and peaceful environment. Always allowing for optimum natural light, the homes will have the best quality flooring, LED lighting (selected especially to create a warm environment), state-of-the-art climate control, a fully equipped kitchen, bathrooms, woodwork and fully insulated windows with UV protection. Leading interior design firm Gunni & Trentino is in charge of the interiors, including fitting luxury kitchens and bathrooms as standard at Palo Alto. Buyers will also be able to choose from a selection of extras so that each residence can be personalised to individual tastes. The first phase will feature an elegant yet functional Health Club ideally for exercising, working and socializing, which is included in the price of each home. It will include a state-of-the-art gym, a fitness studio, an indoor heated pool, a spa and sauna and steam room, a kids’ club, business centre, concierge service and rental management services. Residents will also have two large outdoor pools, two children’s pools and a heated ‘lap pool’, allowing swimming during the winter months. Palo Alto is quickly establishing itself as an ideal destination for those already attracted to the area, something, which is attested to by the fact that 50% of Phase 1 homes have been sold in just 4 months. The buyers to date come from 16 countries including Europe (with a high proportion from Germany and Belgium), North and South America and the Middle East. The majority of buyers are aged 4060 and either have older children or are empty-nesters and are professionals from business, finance, medical and design sectors. Primarily, the overseas buyers are investing in these stunning properties as second homes for holidays with a small percentage purchasing intending to use them as a permanent residence. The Palo Alto development has at its core a philosophy of providing “light, privacy and space” and combining nature with modern, environmentally friendly luxury. The developers could not have chosen a better spot on the coast from which to deliver on this promise. For a free brochure visit lp.paloaltomarbella.com or call freephone 900 102 322

CLUB By Amy-Rose McDowell Interior Designer at FOC Design

Y

ou might be thinking that the famous 1983 Wham! single that made it to number four in the UK charts put tropical cool on the map, but George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley certainly weren’t pioneers. The Tropicana Club in Cuba first opened its doors in 1939 and evolved out of a depression era bohemian nightclub called Edén Concert, run by Cuban impresario Victor de Correa. He had been approached by two casino owners who presented the idea of a club which fused both cabaret and a casino. Having found a venue on the outskirts of Havana, they felt that the tropical gardens would provide the perfect lush backdrop for what was to become one of the most decadent party venues in Cuban history. Dancers, singers and musicians were all moved into a converted mansion on the estate and a chandeliered dining room inside the mansion became the casino. It quickly became a tourist hotspot and, despite a slump when the USA entered World War II limiting tourism to Cuba, it rose like a phoenix from the ashes, most notably after Fidel Castro’s revolution in 1959 when the club was nationalised.

Little did the operators know that this club would have a huge impact on spreading Cuban culture internationally and many famous darlings of the show business world graced its stage, such as Edith Piaf and Ofelia Fox. Many other stars were seen frequenting the venue, including Marlon Brando, Sammy Davis Jr. and Greta Garbo. As with many venues at the time, the club attracted the attentions of the Mob and their involvement started very early on, with Havana providing the perfect location for organised crime in the 1950s. Their illegitimate businesses flourished until the revolution, when Castro’s leftist rebels overthrew the president, seized the Mob’s properties and closed its casinos. Luckily, while other hotels and casinos struggled to go on, the Tropicana thrived and continued to become a

The wonderful thing about this style of design is that you can do as much or as little of it as you like and the effects are instant. Pols Poten

The danger with strong patterns or colours is that you can tire of them quickly so it’s worth considering how much pattern or colour you can handle. If you are a fan of big patterns and bold colours then there is more fun to be had; consider painting many different feature walls in bright tropical colours and picking up these colours in your accessories and soft furnishings. Inspired by a golden era of vibrancy, creativity and colour a few tasteful touches can bring Tropicana Club a little closer to home.

Stick with white walls and see how much a room changes with a few tropical leaf-print cushions, or even just one feature wall of wallpaper featuring flamingoes. It’s classy, contemporary and, most of all, cool.

A LUXURY

mountain retreat The El Lodge Ski & Spa has reopened for the skiing season in Sierra Nevada and it’s the place to stay for an experience of pure luxury.

114

O

ne of the many advantages of living on the Costa del Sol is that life during the winter season is an enviable combination of sun and snow. It is always possible to enjoying a beachside restaurant and take in the views of the sun sparkling on the Mediterranean, and it is equally feasible to be on the ski slopes. In fact, for those who live in Marbella and to its east, you can make it from the beach to the piste in about two hours. There are few other places that offer a similar opportunity.

Indeed, the après-ski facilities are second to none and the service is five star throughout the hotel and guests who book El Lodge can be assured that it really does offer a service of the highest standard. And, the gastronomic offering is excellent as well. El Lodge offers two restaurants, a bar and a lounge. Guests can unwind at the Bar with a classic cocktail before dining at The Grill, its rustic fine dining restaurant.

Of course, once you have decided to take off to the mountains for a few days of skiing or snowboarding, you will need a place to stay, and there really is only one place to stay and do Sierra Nevada in style, and that is El Lodge Ski & Spa. Located 2,300metres above sea level, El Lodge features ski-in/ski-out privileges as well as interiors by famed British interior designer, Andrew Martin who has decorated the rooms with luxurious but cosy furnishings: faux-fur throws, cowhide rugs, vintage posters, and antler chandeliers give the rooms a distinctly alpine vibe. His use of lighting is so extraordinary that inside the hotel it feels like summer in Marbella.

YOU ARE GUARANTEED A WARM WELCOME AND TIP-TOP SERVICE FROM THE MOMENT YOU STEP THROUGH THE ENTRANCE TO EL LODGE UNTIL YOU LEAVE

The Lodge’s rooms and suites offer a spacious layout, with floor to ceiling windows, providing breath-taking views of the surrounding mountains. First floor rooms feature direct access to the outdoor heated pool, Jacuzzi and sauna, whilst second and third floor accommodation offer grand terraces with private Jacuzzis overlooking the mountains and village. It sounds too good to leave and anyone who prefers to just look at the slopes, rather then get their skis on, can easily spend the whole time enjoying the many pleasures that El Lodge offers.

Game and fondue feature strongly on the menu, as well as Caviar de Riofrio, the only organic caviar in the world, which is produced not far from Sierra Nevada. Plus, how exciting it is to ski-in to The Sun Deck, Sierra Nevada’s only ski-in/ski-out restaurant, for hot chocolate and a gourmet lunch. The fusion menu features Mediterranean fare, sushi and barbequed cuisine. It is worth noting that the food and drink prices throughout the hotel are very fair considering the service and food is of such a high standard.

115

The hotel also has a wellequipped games room with a roaring fire. Guests can play pool or try the ‘old school’ arcade games table. A selection of board games and books is also available and the comfy, Chesterfield sofas invite you to spend all day in this room and from its vantage point watch others out in the snow. Youngsters also have their own games room designed by Minimec with everything from Lego for the younger ones to Playstation and X-Box for the teens. El Lodge is also equipped to provide all the necessary equipment needed for skiing or snowboarding. Guests at

116

private or group lessons organised by the in-house team, and children’s ski classes are also available. And, El Lodge also provides a shuttle service that will pick you up from the main plaza, or from other areas of the resort – all you have to do is call the hotel five minutes before you want to be collected!

El Lodge can make use of the Pret-aPorter equipment hire with the latest ski equipment from Stöckli and ski clothing from Bogner. The hotel even offers a boot warming and slipper service for in between runs. Guests can also finetune their ski or snowboarding skills with

You are guaranteed a warm welcome and tiptop service from the moment you step through the entrance to El Lodge until you leave and whenever you think of Sierra Nevada, you’ll remember El Lodge and make plans to return to this luxury mountain retreat.

he present list of Red Values is from Priorat and is intended for those who love great deals. These labels aren’t just chosen because they’re wallet-friendly; they also happen to be worth every single euro. To find a really good deal in Priorat, wine lovers must consider second wines which deliver fruity and profound aromas with character and style. These are the ‘in demand’ affordable wines most experts recently have started to drink and talk about. These bottles are in the medium price range but deliver luxe level flavour. This is a conscious selection of Top Five Priorat reds that, for the money, you should keep on the radar and in your glass throughout 2017.

two times previous winner of the GTI championship, but too two years away from racing whilst expanding his business. He returned this year with his trusty black, battle scared GTI race car nicknamed “zee panzer”.

PETER BOWERMAN’S

Motorsport Championship Hat-trick The final races of the 2016 GTI Championship took place in Almeria. The Championship held 10 races throughout the year at top racetracks such as Ascari, Cartagena, Guadix, Circuit De Andalucia & Almeria. The GTI championship is a firm favourite with the spectators and known for its exciting and closely run races. Marbella Racing Drivers Club (MRDC) entered five drivers into the championship to take on other racing teams; (British) Peter Bowerman, Stephen Pattrick, Charlie Lemon,

(Norwegian) Hans Peter Dalen & (Dutch) Elger Bouwman. The racing was incredibly close this year with its fair share of high speed side by side action, leaving every car with battle scars. This years overall Champion, winning an incredible seven of the 10 races was MRDC’s Peter Bowerman, originally from Chigwell Essex and MD of the successful “Overseas Dreams” real estate agency in Marbella & La Cala de Mijas. Peter was already a Historic Touring Car Champion and

Peter also known as “No Fear Spear” won 4 of the races from the very back of the reverse grid against competitors with faster lap times. He commented: “Winning races is about mental agility and being able to read the situation around you and react quickly. You have to know when to concede a position but then attack back straight away, pressurising other drivers into mistakes, then being ready to take advantage in a split second.” If you are a Petrol-Head and interested in finding out more about motor racing & track days in Spain or just interested in following all the news, photos and onboard camera action, you can contact the MRDC at: MarbellaRacingDriversClub.com

RITA MARTORELL

Portraits and People: the work of Rita Martorell Portrait painters are a special group of artists; rather than creating a vision of the world or a landscape in either abstract or realist styles, they have the tough job of capturing a likeness of a living person and communicating something about the inner life of that man or woman as well. It is not an easy task, especially since the growth of photography has done so much to claim portraiture for its domain. For many centuries, the painted portrait was a symbol of status and reflected the social or political power of a person and in many ways it still retains much of that importance, as the work of portrait painter Rita Martorell amply shows. Rita Martorell, who was born in Zurich in 1971, has focused on a group of politicians for her latest series of portraits, previously exhibited in Barcelona and at the European parliament in Strasbourg. Her aim is to reveal aspects of modern society through these representations of the political world in Spain and her subjects are political figures from Catalonia, as well as those from politics and finance across Spain as a whole. And, you can see all of them in her new book “Rita Martorell, Portrait of the Soul 1996-2016”. Rita Martorell has managed to bring together renowned personalities from the world of culture, politics, finance and sport in her book, where famous faces such as Gunilla von Bismark, portrayed in the year 97, and Michel Houellebecq, the novelist, are featured. In Strasbourg, she painted the first democratic president of Galicia, Fernández Albor, now his portrait belongs to the gallery of illustrious members of the Bundestag in Berlin. Rita painted soccer player Samuel Eto’o in Milan: “I could say that he is a very authentic person, that I have always liked his spontaneity on and off the field.” At the moment, she is finishing the portrait of Baltasar Garzón, of whom she thinks, “he has a presence that reaches much beyond reality. ”She says of her work as a portrait painter: “I do not really identify myself as a portraitist solely as such. Let me say that the portrait genre has been a personal exercise for me, an innate way of representing the human being from my point of view, in order to interpret his attitude or his thinking, which interests me so much. I like to extract the deepest meaning of a look, or the most subtle gesture of a face.”

I felt for him led me to create a very sincere work that became the origin of my long series of portraits of public faces made over 20 years.”

The first portrait she made of a public figure was of Eduardo Punset in the year 1994, who is a scientific and political commentator, “because the admiration

Rita’s gallery of famous faces also includes: Pío Aguirre, Sergi Belbel, Francisco de Borbón, Gunilla von Bismark, Marc Colomer, Josep A. Duràn i

Lleida, Samuel Eto’o, Gerardo Fernández Albor, Fernando Fernández Tapias, Marta Ferrussola, Baltasar Garzon , Sandra de Hohenlohe, Michel Houellebecq, Abel Matutes, Fernando Morán, Enrique Pérez Flores, Eduardo Punset, Pilar Rahola, Petre Roman, Rosa Valls-Taberner and Manuel Vicent, among others. Since her first solo exhibition in Barcelona in 1992, Rita Martorell has travelled to important Museums and Art Foundations such as Tel Aviv’s Cervantes Institute, the Kampa Museum in Prague, the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the Mudima Foundation in Milan, the Museum IVAM of Valencia, Bundestag Art Collection in Berlin, Moschillo Group in Italy, Museum of Modern Art in Bogotá or Museum of Contemporary Art in Fortaleza in Brazil. A SUMMER OF

CRAZY MUSIC C

razy Music Productions (CMP) had a very successful 2016 with its spectacular line up of acts that included Seal at the Puente Romano Tennis Club. Following the triumph of Seal’s performance at the Puente Romano, the concert promoters are busy signing up acts for 2017 and the company’s preferred venue is the Puente Romano. Martin Tye of Crazy Music told the press that Seal still talks about his visit to Marbella and the Puente Romano, which, Seal said, “is a beautiful and intimate venue with a great atmosphere,” and Martin Tye echoed Seal when he said, “the Puente

Romano is by far the best venue on the coast.” To date, CMP have already booked Foreigner for 11th June and George Benson for the 21st July. Mr Benson is no stranger to the Puente Romano and he has already said many times that it is his favourite place to perform. Fans of Foreigner can look forward to hearing the band’s 70s hits such as “Cold as Ice,” “Waiting for a Girl Like You” and the outstanding “I Want to Know What Love Is.”

The suave Mr Benson will no doubt give the audience some of his best known tunes, including “Lady Love Me,” “Give Me the Night” and “The Greatest Love of All.” He has proved to be extremely popular with Marbella’s international residents and this year is sure to be no exception. CMP is catering to the large and rapidly growing community of people aged thirty plus who enjoy live music, who were brought up as regular concert goers and who love the live aspect of modern music, but are generally not offered the comfortable environment that they have grown to appreciate as they have matured. At a CMP concert established artists can share an intimate connection with their audience in exclusive and luxury venues, where the clients have the option of enjoying the event with VIP service and five star hospitality, hence the collaboration with the Puente Romano. We will keep you informed about more exciting concert dates from Crazy Music Productions – it’s going to be a very musical summer! crazymusicproductions.com
