CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT This month we turn the spotlight on one of America’s most beautiful actresses, Jessica Biel.

Everything you ever needed to know about this talented superstar.

J

essica Biel was born in Ely, Minnesota, however her family moved frequently during her childhood living in Texas, Connecticut, and Woodstock, Illinois before settling in Boulder, Colorado. With an early interest in everything theatre related, Biel took dance and singing classes as a child. “I had a mission as a kid,” she explained,

“I was just one of those kids who begged and begged. ‘Take me to this commercialacting class.’ ‘Take me to this play.’ ‘Take me to this audition.’ And my parents just supported it.” She was especially interested in the musical Annie and served as an understudy for a production of the show in Connecticut when she was eight years old. Biel branched out into modelling at the age of 11 and won an acting scholarship in Los Angeles during a modelling convention in 1994. It was there she was discovered and signed by a talent agency. She began modelling for print advertisements, and appeared in commercials for products such as Dulux Paint and Pringles.

In 1996, Jessica landed the role of Mary Camden in the family drama, 7th Heaven. She played the oldest daughter of a minister and his wife who had seven children, each episode featured the moral challenges and misadventures experienced by the sizable brood. Jessica gradually became dissatisfied with her goody-goody image, eventually posing for semi-nude photographs for Gear magazine at the age of 17. The producers of the show did not approve and during season five, her character underwent a rebellious phase which was used to write Biel out of the show, sending Mary to her grandparents’ house in Buffalo for some tough love to counter her rebellious behaviour. During season six, Mary returned home, but the differences between Biel and the producers led to Mary leaving home full time and becoming a flight attendant. Biel returned for five episodes during season seven, she then appeared in episode two of season eight, when she revealed to the family that she had married Carlos Rivera and was pregnant with his child. After a nearly three-year absence, it was announced that Biel would make a tri-

umphant return for the season ten finale, reuniting all nine of the family for the first time since the season seven finale. Throughout the series run, Biel looked for opportunities to showcase her dramatic range by starring as Peter Fonda’s troubled granddaughter in the critically acclaimed 1997 drama Ulee’s Gold, then co-starring in the 1998 family comedy I’ll Be Home for Christmas with Jonathan Taylor Thomas. In 2001, after completing her first year at college, Biel returned to Los Angeles to focus on feature films playing the love interest of Freddie Prinze Jr. in the baseball-themed film Summer Catch. The next year, she starred as promiscuous college student Lara in the ensemble film The Rules of Attraction, an adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel and then turned to the horror genre with the 2003 remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Rules of Attraction proved to be a commercial and critical disappointment, but Texas Chainsaw Massacre became a box office hit. Moving into action films, Biel had a role in Blade: Trinity, the latest addition to the vampire-hunting saga starring Wesley Snipes. She also made a cameo appearance in the 2004 film Cellular. This was the first time she played the lover on-screen of her real life boyfriend, Chris Evans. She took to the skies as a fighter pilot in the military action thriller Stealth in 2005 with Jamie Foxx and Josh Lucas, which proved to be another box office disappointment. Her next effort, the drama London, also received mediocre reviews. This was the second time Jessica played her off-screen boyfriend’s partner in a film. After a string of lacklustre projects, Biel earned positive reviews for her role in The Illusionist, a romantic historical drama starring Edward Norton. The film helped establish Biel as a dramatic actress. Biel then played an Iraq War veteran in the 2006 film Home of the Brave, a drama about soldiers struggling to re-adjust to society after facing the hardships of war. Turning to lighter fare for her next project, Biel took on the role of a lawyer in the 2007 comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry with Adam Sandler and Kevin James. Sandler and James played firefighters who pretend to be in a same-sex relationship so that James’ character could receive health benefits. That same year, Biel appeared in the thriller Next with Nicolas

n 2009, Biel played Larita, an American who impulsively marries a young British man and then must deal with her new upper class in-laws in Easy Virtue with Colin Firth and Kristin Scott Thomas. The film premiered in September 2008 at the Toronto International Film Festival and critics praised Biel for her performance, with Variety Magazine calling her a “spirited, sharp-witted comedienne.” The Hollywood Reporter described her performance as

“an irresistible force ofnature, a kind, witty, supremely intelligent and beautiful woman who ... is capable of rejoinders that thoroughly undercut her opponent’s withering criticism.” Biel

also performed two songs on the film’s soundtrack, ‘Mad About the Boy’ and ‘When the Going Gets Tough’.

necessity that needs to be addressed now,” the actress explained in a statement on the program’s website. Biel has also established the Make the Difference Network, a social networking website for charitable efforts. Biel has continued to showcase her comedic talents with the romantic comedy Valentine’s Day, an ensemble film with Jessica Alba, Kathy Bates, Anne Hathaway, Ashton Kutcher, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, and many others. Biel also appeared in the action movie The A-Team with Bradley Cooper and Liam Neeson, based on the popular television series. It’s not only Jessica’s professional life that has received attention, Biel began dating singer and actor Justin Timberlake in January 2007. After four years together, the couple announced their split in March 2011. However, by autumn 2011 the couple reunited, and in late December 2011, she experienced a true A-List happy ever after when Justin proposed in the mountains of Jackson, Wyoming.

In April 2008, Biel began working on the political satire Nailed with Jake Gyllenhaal. The film centered around a woman who accidentally gets a nail lodged in her head, then travels to Washington D.C. to fight for better health care. Following this, Biel lent her voice to the animated science fiction film Planet 51. The actress’s role of Sarah Brown in a fully staged concert production of Guys and Dolls during the 2009 season at the Hollywood Bowl received her a rousing standing ovation. She subsequently landed a part in Lincoln Center

THE LUCKY ONE

U.S. Marine Sergeant Logan Thibault returns to North Carolina from his third tour of duty in Iraq, with the one thing he credits with keeping him alive; a photograph he found of a woman he doesn’t even know. Learning her name is Beth (Taylor Schilling) and where she lives, he shows up at her door, and ends up taking a job at her family-run local kennel. Despite her initial mistrust and the complications in her life, a romance develops between them, giving Logan hope that Beth could be much more than his good luck charm.

THE COVE BY RON RASH

The New York Times bestselling author of Serena returns to Appalachia, this time at the height of World War I, with the story of a blazing but doomed love affair caught in the turmoil of a nation at war. Deep in the rugged Appalachians of North Carolina lies the cove, a dark, forbidding place where spirits and fetches wander, and even the light fears to travel. The townsfolk of Mars Hill believe that Laurel Shelton, the lonely young woman who lives within its shadows, is a witch. This lyrical, heart-rending tale, as mesmerizing as its award-winning predecessor, shows once again this masterful novelist at the height of his powers.

Nº8 LOVE IS A FOUR LETTER WORD BY JASON MRAZ

Produced by multiple Grammy Award-winner Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, Christina Perri, Young The Giant), Love Is A Four Letter Word marks Jason Mraz’s finest, most fully realized collection to date. Fueled by magnificently textured arrangements and distinctive vocal landscapes, the album, Jason Mraz’s fourth studio release and first new collection since 2008’s epochal “We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things”, fully confirms the San Diego-based singer/songwriter as one of modern pop’s most vibrant and inventive artists. “It’s personal. It’s melodic and it’s mellow... there’s a couple of up-tempo tunes, but mostly the rhythm-of-the-heartbeat kind of takes precedence on this record. It feels more like the pace of life. At least, based on my life and what I’ve been doing,” explains Jason.

Undoubtedly, one of the most exciting artists to emerge from the UK scene in recent years, Labrinth releases his eagerly anticipated debut solo album, Electronic Earth, through Syco Records this month. Born Timothy McKenzie, in just two short years, 22-year old Labrinth has become the trailblazing artist on everybody’s lips.

ELECTRA HEART BY MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS

Marina and The Diamonds releases her brand new album Electra Heart this month. The album is a huge leap forward for Marina and promises to be one of the most exciting pop releases of 2012, underlining that she is amongst the most talented young British artists around. ”It’s an ode to dysfunctional love. I based the project around character types commonly found in love stories, film and theatre, usually ones associated with power and control in love, as opposed to weakness or defeat. I guess it was a way of dealing with the embarrassment that, for the first time in my life, I got ‘played’. Rejection is a universally embarrassing topic and Electra Heart is my response to that. It is a frank album” explains Marina.

Following the breakdown of her marriage, Kim Kardashian promised to make a charitable donation in honour of the wedding gifts she and Kris Humphries received at their celebration last year. In a letter sent to wedding guests, Kim wrote, “I would like to thank

you for your generous and thoughtful wedding gift. It has taken me some time to pull everything together but I wanted to let you know that the money for every gift received by me at my wedding has been donated to the Dream Foundation; an organization that I am very passionate about.” There was also a note included from the Dream Foundation, “With gratitude in our hearts, we share with you that Kim Kardashian has made a donation to Dream Foundation in honour of your generous wedding gift.” I wonder what happened to the rumoured $15 million Kim pocketed as a result of the sale of the rights to televise the glamourous affair? What charity did that go to?!

To celebrate his 18th birthday, Justin Bieber decided to splash his cash on a new Hollywood Hills mansion. The singer selected a $10.8 million property that consists of 9,400 square feet, five bedrooms, a gym, a swimming pool, and a movie theater. However, Justin will have to wait for a while before he can move in, as Ashton Kutcher is currently renting the place for $50,000 per month. Bieber is said to be looking to take his relationship with girlfriend Selena Gomez to the next level by buying the new love nest so they can have their own space.

While Spears and most celebs like Kim Kardashian primarily have their managers handle their Twitter duties, Gaga has claimed to personally maintain her account. She regularly uses it to interact with her fans, share original pictures and make major announcements, no doubt contributing to her ‘Queen of Twitter’ status. The five most-followed people on Twitter are all musicians, led by Gaga (20 million), Justin Bieber (18 million) and Katy Perry (15.7 million). ONE TO WATCH! Each month SOCIETY MARBELLA shares a secret with you. It may be the freshest music artist, an exciting new designer or the next A list actress, but whoever it is, you know they are one to watch. This month, Society Marbella talks EXCLUSIVELY to singer, actress and model Colette Falla. Colette Falla releases her debut single ‘Underwater’ this month. Produced by Swedish rocker Johan Carlsson from pop/ rock band Carolina Liar, there is an original uniqueness in Colette’s songs. Think 1940’s French jazz mixed with modern blues and muddy Motown soul, add some pop and electronic beats, visual lyrics and sexy, edgy vocals and you’ve captured the essence of Colette. “I’ve heard peo-

ple compare me to everything from Amy Winehouse crossed with Gwen Stefani to The Sneaker Pimps crossed with The Cardigans… but the main thing I hear from people is that my music is cool and unique,” explains the rising star.

Colette is no stranger to the stage, growing up with a background in musical theatre. She later turned to jazz after graduating from Los Angeles’ acclaimed school for contemporary music, Musician’s Institute, and spent time concentrating on writing original material. “I grew up with a natural passion for performing, whether it was making up dance routines, acting in home-made shows or singing on the trampoline, I was always performing and was never shy of the stage. I begged my parents for singing lessons when I was about 11 but I had to prove to them that I was serious about it, so I auditioned for the local Christmas Pantomime and when they saw how much I loved going to the re-

Since moving to Los Angeles, Colette has shot a short film ‘No Regrets’ with Karl Taylor which won the Vazaar Video Festival Award judged by Oliver Stone, filmed a commercial for XBOX, modelled in a national campaign for Harley Davidson’s ‘Pink Ladies’ line and been on tour with Nevin James’ musical Rock Opera raising awareness for Human Trafficking. Over the past year, Colette has created an impressive album with Johan Carlsson and an amazing music video filmed by renowned photographer Karl Taylor. As our meeting with the talented star came to an end, Colette shared with us her plans for 2012. “I’m looking forward

to my single ‘Underwater’ making a huge impact on the industry and hoping to follow up with a European tour later this year!” With her spir-

ituality and compassion, Colette tells tales far beyond her years, with her modelling, acting and singing careers evolving day by day, Hollywood better watch out as this one is a triple threat; her goal for the next decade,

CELEBRITY T

By Christie Holland

hese days, it’s almost impossible to surf the Internet, open a newspaper or magazine, or watch television without seeing a celebrity endorsing some sort of product. The rich and famous are putting their names to everything, from perfume and clothing to phones and cars. However this is not a new marketing strategy; film stars in the 1940s posed for cigarette companies, and Bob Hope pitched American Express in the late 1950s and the comedy team of Grace Allen and George Burns broke the ‘fourth wall’ of live television by hawking Carnation milk products during their popular television show. Joe Namath slipped into Hanes pantyhose in the 1970s, and Bill Cosby jingled for Jell-O for three decades, although the last year has seen a phenomenal rise in celebrity endorsed products. In 2011, 24% of advertising campaigns were fronted by a famous face, which is an astonishing 500% increase on 2010. Companies and brands openly acknowledge the power of celebrities in influencing consumers’ purchasing decisions.

selling umbrellas created customized umbrellas featuring sparkly fabrics and glittery charms on the handles, all recommended by emerging star Rihanna to coincide with the release of her hit, ‘Umbrella’, they attracted a whole new market of younger shoppers and the traffic on their website soared.

It is a universally accepted fact that celebrity endorsement can increase the appeal of a product that may have previously lacked allure; an influential celebrity can provide a massively powerful tool that magnifies the effects of a campaign. Celebrities, small and large, are likely to continue popping up in ads for a very simple reason: celebrity sells. If consumers believe that a certain star or singer might actually use the product, sales can take off. When Totes Isotoner, a Cincinnati company

“We had about 210,000 straight after she wore it and it just escalated from there,” the designer explained.

So, why do companies utilise celebrities in their advertising campaigns? One obvious explanation is that celebrities help companies tap into new markets. Consider tennis star Maria Sharapova, one of today’s most sought-after and most effective endorsers. The mere fact that Sharapova promotes fashion label Cole Haan may encourage her most devoted fans to visit its shops, allowing Cole Haan to perhaps attract a younger and more diverse demographic. It’s not just advertising campaigns that celebrities have an influence over, when Mad Men star Christina Hendricks arrived on the red carpet at the 2011 Emmy’s in a hand-beaded gown by Sydney’s Johanna Johnson, the daily visitors to the designer’s website quadrupled.

“We had launched a new online store which unfortunately due to the traffic, crashed.” Johanna took a big risk spending three months creating the intricate dress, which she sent to the actress as a gift in hopes that she would wear it on the night. “I heard she was

going to wear it but we’ve heard that before. I wasn’t prepared to believe it until I actually saw it,” says Johnson When the Duchess of Cambridge stepped out at an official solo function this year wearing a £369 wool coat from British brand Hobbs she became the Queen of the British high street. Within 45 minutes of Kate wearing the full-length belted overcoat, it had sold out on Hobbs’ website. Reiss also previously experienced the Kate Middleton effect. When the official royal engagement pictures were released featuring Kate in their cream Nannette dress, the brand’s annual profits soared. Celebrities get the viewer’s attention; but whether they work to sell the product depends on proper celebrity casting. Paradoxically, the phenomenon is gathering steam in an era when celebrities have never been more tainted by overexposure. The most successful celebrity brand alliances match a star whose image is an organic fit with that of a brand. Uma Thurman is sophisticated yet unpredictable, the same image Louis Vuitton has created, whilst Michelle Pfeiffer is mysterious and quietly elegant, reflecting the spirit of Giorgio Armani designs. Brands must consider the attractiveness and credibility of the celebrity and their compatibility with the product before publically promoting the two. However, despite these factors, this advertising strategy can, on some occasions, be

detrimental to the brand, especially when that famous spokesperson falls out of favour with his or her adoring public. For more than a decade, golfer Tiger Woods was the face of everything from Nike sporting goods to Tag Heuer menswear and Gillette shaving products. However the meltdown of Woods’ marriage and subsequent ugly divorce saga did not sit well with advertisers, who feared he could no longer be a fan-friendly frontman for their goods. In 2005, supermodel Kate Moss, who had fronted Calvin Klein,

Chanel and H&M’s campaigns, built her wealth on her image and subsequent product endorsements. That is, until a British tabloid published photos that purported to show Moss using illegal drugs, resulting in H&M swiftly dropping its alleged $7 million per year contract with Moss and Chanel failing to renew their timely ending contract. Advertisers gamble even with the most bankable and dependable of stars. So why do they fork out hundreds of millions each year for advertising campaigns featuring Hollywood stars, star athletes, hit singers and television

“The reality is people want a piece of something they can’t be,” says Eli stars?

Portnoy, a branding strategist. “They live vicariously through the products and services that those celebrities are tied to. Years from now, our descendants may look at us and say, ‘God, these were the most gullible people who ever lived.’”

CONGRATULATIONS TO HELEN POWELL, winner

of Marbella Makeover. From over a hundred of applicants, she has been chosen as the final candidate for this life changing experience. Over the next few months, we will document her progress, giving you an access-all-areas pass to her treatments, her thoughts and her feelings as she is slowly introduced to a complete cosmetic and dermatological makeover. Here, we find out a bit more about the winner and her treatment plan for the coming months.

So Helen, how do you feel about becoming the winner of Marbella Makeover? I just can’t believe it, I never thought I would win, you always hear about competitions but I have never known anyone who won. I simply can’t believe my luck, it feels like I have won the lottery! I have experienced so many emotions, tears, nerves, excitement and happiness, it’s just such a shock. What do your family and friends think? They are all so happy for me, even though they are biased as they are my friends, they have all told me they felt I deserved to win and they are all 100% behind me. The past few years have been tough with my son being unwell but we have just got on with it as that’s what you have to do. All my friends voted for me knowing that this really would change my life forever. I am so shocked but they have all told me they knew I would win! Why do you think the public selected you? I really don’t know, that’s really tough to answer, I would like to think that

people understood that I was just telling the truth and that none of my story has been fabricated. I have answered all the questions completely truthfully and I would hope that the reason people voted was because they appreciated me being genuine and honest. Did you nominate yourself or did someone else put you forward? Well I guess it was a little bit of both, I saw the advert in SOCIETY MARBELLA whilst I was getting my hair done in Dee’s Hair and Beauty in El Rosario. I have known Dee since I was five years old and I reconnected with her when I moved back down to Marbella six years ago. She encouraged me to apply and so did a lot of my other friends, thank goodness I did! What inspired you to apply for this life changing experience? I would have to say the desire to regain my sparkle, as I like to call it. I don’t feel like the same person I once was, the stress of my son being ill has really taken its toll on me. I want to feel happy and content with myself on the inside and the outside and regain the confidence I have lost.

From left to right: Lisa Brown and Dan Waring from Advanced Hair Studio; Helen Powell, Dr. Kai Kaye from Ocean Clinic; Simon Mark from Mark Dental Clinic

What treatment are you most excited about undergoing? All of them! If I had to pick one I would probably say treatment on my stomach as although I have never been heavily overweight, I, like many women have struggled to regain a flat stomach since having children. It is something that I am very conscious of and I am looking forward to feeling confident with my body again. What change do you think will make the biggest impact on your life? I think everything about the overall experience will change my life, I am so excited! Do you have any concerns about going under the knife? No because I know I am in safe hands, I completely trust the doctors. All my excitement has now quashed any nerves I had, I just can’t wait to

get started and see the results. I am going to be a completely new woman! How do you feel now having met the team? Brilliant! Everyone has put me completely at ease and everyone seems as excited as I am, which I didn’t think was possible. As I mentioned before I know I am in safe hands, and I trust the professionals’ opinions 100%, I can’t wait to begin the consultations and hear what they all have in store for me. Do you have a goal following the completion of your treatments? Actually I do, myself and my fiancé are going to finally get married! I am hoping to take his breath away when I walk down the aisle next year. Marbella Makeover couldn’t have come along at a better time!

Next month, the treatments will begin. Be sure not to miss it.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR the latest local and national health and beauty news

IN THE KNOW This month our Beauty Ed, Nicola McGeorge, an avid follower of all things ‘green’ reveals her favourite ‘au natural’ products.

Eco Glam Butter Me Up The Organic Pharmacy Carrot Butter Cleanser is a balm that melts on contact with the skin. It is infused with antioxidant Carrot and Calendula as well as decongesting Rosemary and soothing Lavender for a really deep but gentle cleanse. It takes off eye makeup as well as dirt and pollution. Remove with a muslin cloth soaked in warm water. This will boost circulation and fully remove the cleanser leaving the skin radiant. £34.96 theorganicpharmacy.com

I am a big fan of the whole Intelligent Nutrients skincare range. All the products work beautifully together although I have to say the shining star is the serum. A light oil, that glides over your skin and immediately sinks in for the kind of results promised by more aggressive regimens. Super certified organic antioxidant Intellimune help cells live longer, whilst restoring skin’s collagen and elastin production. The results are astonishing, addictive and undeniable. £42 qvcuk.com

Light Up My Life NEOM Luxury Organics candles are made using only vegetable wax and pure essential oils rather than synthetic fragrances so they burn without releasing harmful pollutants, toxins or soot. They work as a powerful holistic treatment when you breathe in the scented air so it is best to burn them for between two and four hours at a time. £37.50 neomorganics.com

Argan oil and rosehip seed oil are high in anti-oxidants and fatty acids to fight wrinkles and help skin cells to regenerate. My skin laps this up, making it appear plumper, smoother and brighter. Plus it smells divine – like walking through a rose garden. £68.00 ila-spa.com

Feed Me Being in flip flops most of the year, my feet take a constant battering. They are dry, cracked and not very attractive at all, in fact my other half has prettier feet than I do. Weledas Skin Food is a deep-penetrating replenishing skin repair cream ideal for dry patches of skin. Smoother your feet in it and cover with a pair of cotton socks for the ultimate treat . Get Your Glow On

I have to admit I love most of Dr Hauschkas products. The Cleansing Milk, Rose Day Cream, Clay Mask and Neem Nail Oil are all firm favourites, however I have only just tried the Toned Day Cream and now could not imagine life without it. This tinted moisturiser evens out my skin tone, gives me a little colour and sits beautifully under makeup. Best of all it makes my skin really glow. I also have my 70-year-old mother hooked, proving that it suits all skin types. £26.95 drhauschka.co.uk

MAKING A SPLASH The health benefits of hydrotherapy By Nicola McGeorge

T

he use of water for therapy has been around for hundreds of years, as far back as the ancient Greeks and Romans, and forms an integral part of many traditional medicine systems. Hydrotherapy is the oldest, safest, and most inexpensive way to treat common ailments. Generally speaking, heat is used to quiet and soothe the body, and to slow down the activity of internal organs. Cold is used to stimulate and invigorate, increasing internal activity within the body. At the most basic level, it can be practiced simply by relaxing in a warm bath at home. This aids relaxation; helps warm the muscles and realign the muscle fibers which have become tight, sooth menstrual pains or even unwind tired legs. I mean come on, who doesn’t feel better after sitting in the tub with your favourite bubble bath and scented candles whilst reading a good book?

TYPES OF HYDROTHERAPY Under the general heading of hydrotherapy, there are several techniques. Water is administered by various methods ranging from splashing to immersion as well as moist compresses. The following are some of my personal favourites, have a good read through and see which one you like the sound of. Showering Every morning to boost my immune system I alternate between hot and cold showering. I start with a normal shower before turning it to as cold as I can stand for up to 30 seconds. I then switch to hot again for a minute. This is repeated three to four times ending on cool. You can also use a pressurised shower head to target specific cellulite prone areas. Medicated Baths Epson Salts – I buy the largest bag I can from the local health shop and empty a third of it into a warm bath twice a week. This is great for relaxation, bloating and soothing any aches and pains. My father suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, so he adds ten drops of eucalyptus oil to his salt bath which increases the healing powers. Soak for 20 minutes and then rinse off. Oatmeal Bath – For skin irritations, sunburn and chafing. Add one to two cups of finely ground oatmeal and then soak for 15 to 30 minutes.

34

Baking Soda – This acts as a mild antiseptic and relives itching. It is great for skin conditions such as eczema or rashes. Add ½ kilo and soak for ten minutes. I am also a big fan of foot baths. They have relieved my headaches, colds and even anxiety. Best of all you can do it anywhere, just pop your feet in a foot spa, sit back, relax and enjoy an uplifting film. Hot Foot Baths Good For: Headaches, producing sweat, warming the body, colds, relaxation, indigestion, menstrual problems... Keep topping up the hot water to maintain a constant temperature. The water needs to cover your feet and ankles. You may want to use an essential oil to increase the healing properties. Sit for ten to 20 minutes and finish by pouring cold water over your feet. Make sure that you do not sweat too much and drink plenty of water. Cold Foot Baths Good For: Tired feet, nose bleeds, constipation, insomnia... If, like me, you have trouble sleeping due to an over active mind, this works wonders. Soak for as long as you can stand it. Alternating Hot/Cold Foot Baths Good For: Circulation, varicose veins, high blood pressure, immune system... Begin by soaking your feet for two minutes in hot water followed by 30 seconds in cold water. Keep switching between the two for 15 minutes, finishing on cold. Steam Rooms After a workout in the gym, I like nothing more than to unwind in a steam room. These help with circulation, heart rate, hormone production and airway flow. Additionally, they have been known to boost the immune system, relax, and help with depression. It is important to avoid overheating. Do not spend more than 15 to 20 minutes in a steam room. I recommend that you exfoliate first all over your body and face. When the heat gets too much jump under a cold shower or plunge pool and try not to scream the place down. Why not give hydrotherapy a try, chances are it will become a welcome part of your overall health and wellness routine!

A NATURAL FACELIFT AT YOUR FINGERTIPS I f you are wishing to turn back time, but not willing to go under the knife just yet, then this revolutionary technique could be the natural and completely safe answer. It is not often that you meet people who inspire you, but Danish born Elsebeth NybroeNielsen from ENN Care does just that. With boundless energy, glowing skin and an obviously love of life, you cannot help but wonder her secret. “After working more than 20 years in finance and management I felt that my health was starting to suffer and decided it was time to make a change. I changed my career and qualified with a 1st Class Honours degree in nutritional therapy which I have developed a passion for as it aims to identify the causes of a person’s health problems instead of only treating the symptoms. The joy of helping others to feel better counts a lot for me, so when I

first encountered The Natural Face Lift Technique, I was so impressed with the results that I was inspired to train in the technique. It’s a therapy that is truly holistic as the client not only looks better but feels better also.”

Originally developed by Stanley Rosenberg, it is a gentle soft tissue technique that can produce similar results without traumatic cosmetic surgical work. From her new clinic in the plush rooms at Marbella Golf & Country Club (next to Costa del Sol Hospital) Elsebeth works to release the tension from the connective and

the muscle tissue of her clients, which gives a lifting result within six hourly sessions. The treatment can also help improve: • Better bite function through relaxation of jaw muscles • Relief of migraine and tension headaches • Improved breathing and cleansing of the sinuses • Improved facial expression and sensation with facial paralysis • Reduction of scar tissue, old and new

As the technique works on the acupuncture points and meridians, it helps to detoxify and balance the body. The qi is balanced, the nervous system fine tuned, and the harmony of mind, body and spirit restored. “Wanting to offer my clients something more I started to research into skin care products and could not believe how many were labelled organic or natural – when in fact they were not and often contained harmful chemicals. I have now launched an affordable line of natural skin care products which combine discoveries from ancient wisdom with the most up-to-date science. They are organic, natural, fresh and REALLY work.” Special Offer: Course of six treatments paid in advance €375 (normal price €80 per treatment) ENN CARE Tel. 663 048 477 enncare.com

s you age, the skin around your eyes loses its elasticity, while the muscles become slack. Your skin can develop into flabby folds on your upper eyelids and severe creases under your lower lids. As the muscles become looser, the fat around your eye may also protude, thus making your lower eyelids appear baggy.

the Hospital Quiron, Málaga. Dr.Aslani is the chairman of the department and at present the only non-hispanic surgeon to chair a formal surgical department in Spain, while Dr.Ortiz Abello is a specialist in facial plastic surgery, head and neck surgery, and is the principal consultant of the department of Plastic and Reconstructive surgery in Quiron, Málaga.

Ageing not only affects our physical appearance but also our sense of well being. If you have bags and excess skin under your eyes that make you look tired and worn, it gives a false impression of how you feel. Today, however, there are surgical techniques designed specifically for the removal of that ‘tired’ look. This procedure can change not only your physical appearance but your emotional perspective. Blepharoplasty, (or an eyelid lift) is an operation on either the upper or the lower eyelids designed to remove excess skin and fat. It is one of the most common operations performed by the talented surgeons at Cirumed Clinic, Marbella.

Both surgeons boast nearly 50 years of surgical experience between them. In Cirumed Clinic, Marbella, they set out to combine their years of international experience together with the most modern plastic surgery techniques.

Dr. Alexander Aslani and Dr. Manuel Ortiz Abello are the consulting surgeons at Cirumed Clinic, Marbella. Both also work in the department of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive surgery at

Dr. Manuel Ortiz Abello

Your eyes are the focal point of your face and reflect a lot about who you are, however they are also the first place to show signs of ageing. This is why eyelid lifts or blepharoplasty is one of the the most popular cosmetic procedures at the renowned Cirumed Clinic, Marbella.

THE EYELID LIFT Blepharoplasty is a relatively short, safe procedure. In the upper eyelid a blepharoplasty is designed primarily to improve the aged, tired appearance caused by the redundant fold of skin that descends over the eyelid with age. In the lower eyelid a blepharoplasty tightens the skin and muscle and removes the excess fat or ‘bag’. It can also be used to correct vision problems due to sagging eyelids. Dr. Manuel Ortiz Abello explains, “With the latest techniques in eye lid correc-

tions, which includes fat transfer fillers, endolaser, and plasma cells application, combined with the treatment itself, this procedure has advanced phenomenally in the past few years. We are achieving results like never before.” Dr. Alexander Aslani adds, “The latest technology used for this treatment gives the patient no discomfort at all, everything is processed under local anaesthetics with an immediate recovery. Patients can go home the same day and the laser technique makes bruising minimal. This procedure rejuvenates the face with natural results – hence it being one the most popular cosmetic facial procedures in our practice.” Although Dr. Manuel Ortiz Abello is the expert and specialist on aesthetic facial corrections, all surgeries are processed with both surgeons working side-by-side, giving patients maximum security. Blepharoplasty makes it possible to correct many flaws and signs of premature ageing that can undermine selfconfidence. By changing how you look, it can help change how you feel about yourself. cirumed.es

PAMPER DAYS

By Nicola McGeoge Images by David Toms

As a huge fan of pampering, you can imagine how excited I was when I got the chance to sample the delights of The Ocean Spa at The El Oceano Beach Hotel and who am I to turn that down? To get a male point of view, I dragged, my other half with me. If the truth be known he didn’t need much persuading. The Ocean Spa, which is privately owned and operated, is an oasis of tranquil luxury, where the guests’ comfort and satisfaction is paramount. The Ocean Spa features an indoor, heated pool, Jacuzzi, swim-spa and steam room, while at the treatment centre you can find top beauty therapists, hairdressers and nail technicians all of whom are qualified to provide you with a wonderful menu of luxurious treatments. With such a vast array of treatments we found it really difficult to choose. They included, Thai dumpling massage for face and body, Gel, Acrylic and Shellac for nails, Fake Bake spray tan, Nouveau Lashes or if you are feeling too lazy to move there is even a pool side massage on offer. I was very impressed with the high-tech facials available, Crystal Clear, oxygen and the non-Surgical Face Lift Genie, to

name a few. I decided on the Elemis Spa Therapy Advanced Anti-Ageing Facial. These superior face and eye treatments include a luxurious hand, arm and scalp massage for ultimate relaxation. Andy opted for the Guinot Paris Hydradermie, where pure and natural ingredients penetrate into the lower layers of your skin to flush out impurities and hydrate it, plus a full-body massage. Greedy? Never! My facial was divine. Most therapists leave the room while your mask gets to work, however my therapist spent this time massaging my hands, wrapping my feet in hot towels and treating me to an Indian Head massage. Andy came out glowing and refreshed.

After coming round from my trance-like state of bliss, we decided to sample a few cocktails at the pool bar and treating ourselves to lunch in the restaurant. At El Oceano you can swim right up to the bar, a feature that got the thumbs up from us. I actually felt like we were in a scene from the movie Cocktail, and boy were the Piña Coladas good. Lunch was served overlooking the ocean and the food was delicious. What can I say? A breath-taking setting, superb service and an unforgettable experience. LOOK YOUR BEST MORNING, NOON AND NIGHT Reflections Hair Nails & Skin Care salon are delighted to announce the latest member of their beauty team, Jemma Upton.

Eyeliner Before

Almost 90% of women in the UK use cosmetics every day. The majority of women (and an increasing amount of men) apply makeup to enhance their appearance and feel better and more confident about themselves. With the technological advancements in the beauty industry moving at such a fast pace, permanent makeup is now one of the most talked about growth areas in the business today. It took a while to filter into the mainstream, but it’s here, and Jemma Upton can now make sure you look your best, 24 hours a day. Jemma is one of the most exciting and innovative medical aestheticians working on the coast. Spending her time between London and Marbella her client list reads like a ‘who’s who’ of uptown glitterati. Using the most up-to-date techniques and treatments available, she still remains true to the core beliefs that have put Jemma

at the very zenith of her profession, her work is seen not only in terms of what it does to make men and women look better, but also what it does to make men and women feel better. “I started off covering all aspects of beauty, however my laser hair removal treatments started to become more and more popular and then it got to the point where this was all I was doing. I decided to train in permanent make-up, to give myself some variation, however this ended up taking over the laser,” she laughs. “I treat each client as an individual. I would never want them to walk out thinking I had given them the Jemma Upton eyebrows. I always try to work with what they already have, as this is the best way to achieve natural results. As the price includes a retouch I prefer to start lighter and thinner, then the client can add to this with the retouch.”

With over 1OO colours Jemma caters for every nationality. A large amount of her work is corrective and believe it or not, many of Jemma’s clients come to her to fix work done by therapists from top salons and clinics.

size and shape; whether you’re looking to kick-start a slimming plan, tackle those stubborn inches that hours in the gym just won’t shift or just wanting to drop a dress size for a big event. This scientifically proven treatment guarantees you’ll lose at least six inches in just two hours, making it the perfect solution when you have to look your best for that special occasion. The Liporoom head therapist Lynn Shephard explained. “It doesn’t just deliver exceptional inch loss; the unique clay formula and special wrapping techniques also tighten and tone your body whilst exfoliating and cleansing the skin so you will not only look great, you’ll feel fabulous too, all after just one treatment!”

results you’re encouraged to drink plenty of water after treatments to continue the inch loss, detox and cleansing process.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

ALL WRAPPED UP With celebrity followers such as Paula Abdul, Zoe Ball and Rachel Stevens, the ultimate body wrap which guarantees inch loss has now hit the coast at the Liporoom in Nueva Andalucia. Anyone can benefit from the Universal Contour Wrap’s treatment, regardless of your

Developed by Dr Richard Strem, after extensive research into beneficial minerals used in spa treatments, the treatment involves being wrapped in 25-30 elasticated bandages that have been pre-soaked in a warm, mineralrich clay solution. Lynn then recommends ten minutes on a powerplate to get your metabolism moving. “After the work out all you have to do is relax and let the bandages sculpt and tone your body while the minerals are absorbed into your skin and the clay draws out toxins.” Unlike other inch loss treatments Universal Contour Wrap doesn’t rely on dehydration to get results. Testimonial: “ With such gentle care and attention to details Jemma demonstrated professionalism throughout the treatment. The procedure made my eyes looks bigger, my lashes appear thicker and allows me to wake up ready to face the world. I was so thrilled with the outcome.” Monica, London Permanent Makeup and Laser Hair Removal treatments with Jemma Upton can be booked at Reflections Tel. 902 325 324 reflectionsmarbella.com

Liporoom owner Dan Waring would never put his name to anything without trying it first. “After the bandages were removed, I said to Lynn you do not need to measure me, I can see the difference,” he recalled. “I had even lost weight under my chin, the whole area had lifted.” The Liporoom also offers I- Lipo which is loved by the stars of TOWIE. This can be used to enhance the results of the body wrap. I-Lipo works its magic by emitting low levels of laser energy, which creates a chemical signal in the fat cells that are being targeted, the fat cells then release their contents (which is mainly fat) the body absorbs these and they are then burned off during exercise, creating a fat free, shapely new you. So whether you’re looking to kick-start a slimming plan or target a few stubborn inches you can rely on Universal Contour Wrap and I-Lipo to deliver instant results that will keep your friends and family wondering how you did it. THE SEMANA SANTA CLAUSE N

o other country in Europe does Easter like Spain. Forget trying to celebrate Easter in northern Europe (and in the UK you’re probably now banned from doing so under Sharia law). For your average northern European child, Easter has become another, once profoundly religious, celebration swamped under a crass commercial tidal wave of naffness. Like Christmas, now called Winterval in some workplaces in the UK so as not to upset Ahmed in Accounts, the true meaning of Easter, the most dramatically and powerful period of Christ’s life, representing incredible pain, suffering, betrayal and the resurrection, not to mention the not inconsiderable matter of the victory of eternal life over death, has been lost due to commercialism. If you asked your average British youth what he though Easter was about, he would probably reply, after finishing his alchopop, that it was something to do with Jesus being put to death by chocolate bunnies, hot cross buns or painted boiled eggs, or a combination of the three. Let’s face it, the only musings on life that your everyday council estate scrote is likely to have during Easter is when he finds out that his 13-year-old girlfriend is two months pregnant after the St. Valentine’s party…

But I digress, Semana Santa is one of the highlights of the year in Spain, and Andalucia is the place to experience it. Holy Week in Seville is the big one and attracts the most coverage from the television stations, although with Antonio Banderas making his annual pilgrimage, watched from an upstairs balcony by la Melanie, Malaga runs it a close second. Just in case you’ve landed in Andalucia from Planet Guiri, Semana Santa is basically a week of elaborate processions of intricate floats. The term floats is a little misleading as each way a tonne and are carried throughout town by about 40 men, the costaleros, who are hidden underneath the thing. It’s not a job for the faint hearted and the costaleros wear a headpiece like a large inside-out sock, thickly padded around the head and the neck, white t-shirt and dark cotton trousers, a little like a gang of devout and muscular smurfs. Families crowd around the floats when they stop to offer their sons/ brothers/cousins encouragement and water.

Each float depicts a biblical scene, usually in Christ being whipped, the cat-o-ninetails beads slapping against each other as they move along. The figures on the floats themselves are normally rendered in what an art critic could describe as ‘Late Catholic Renaissance Suffering Style’, plenty of detail in the crown of thorns, beads of blood, open wounds and the agonised expression of Christ himself. Happy Clappy Christianity this is not.

50

And then, of course, there are the Virgins. You can’t have a good procession in Andalucia without a Virgin floating by every so often. While the more cynical amongst you may debate the improbability in locating a Virgin anywhere near Marbella, in Seville, for example, they take their virgins very seriously. There is the Virgin del Cachorro (no, I don’t understand why she’s called ‘of the puppy’ either) as well as the Virgin de la O (so called because the first thing the Virgin said when She gave birth was “O”. Alas, no one could tell me what the second thing was). And then there are the two heavyweight Virgins in Seville, the Ali and Frasier of the float world if you like. The Virgin of Hope of Triana and her great rival the Virgin of Hope of the Macarena, (no, you can’t do the dance when she passes) who, because of the rain a few years ago, were diverted and by chance came face to face with each other in an alley for the first ever time. You can only imagine the conversation that they must have had. “This town is only big enough for one Virgin etc”. The rain plays a big factor during Semana Santa. If it throws it down, rain will stop play and the news will be full of images of the devoted in tears because they can’t take their Virgin out. Perhaps the best known image of Semana Santa, however, are the nazarenos, people cloaked in the traditional costume of repentance, which bears more than a passing resemblance to the KKK. As well as this there are also priests swinging incense everywhere, and a band in front of each float that plays music. With more than 50 processions through Seville during Holy Week, it’s a good idea to grab a guide (found at any kiosk or supermarket) to know which procession is where and when. All processions leave from their church, make their way through the city and towards the cathedral, then go back to their church, when the procession ends with the costeleros placing the float down in its place at their church where it won’t be touched until the next year.

Giles Brown, a man who has more reasons to do penance than most, on Easter weekend. Of course, if the thought of standing in a crowd is all too much for you, then you can also follow the example of many in Seville and watch the whole thing on television with a bowl of olives and vino to hand. Giralda TV broadcasts live coverage and all the national channels have reports from Seville. Even the chat shows get in on the act, normally discussing what la Melanie was wearing. And if you’re a real die hard Semana Santa fan, you can even take home DVDs of the proceedings. The sacred week over Seville slowly gets back to normal and looks forward to the more profane celebrations of the April Feria…

INNOVATIVE ETHNIC STYLE dream was to travel “The far and wide to find the

a few statement pieces in their house rather than fill their home entirely with ethnic furniture.”

most eye catching furniture and offer it at affordable prices to customers in southern Spain,” explained India Exotica

owner Morgan Hollis. “Essentially when I began in this industry it was almost impossible to find any accurate information about buying antique furniture in Asia. It was only during my adventures to India, China, Thailand and Indonesia that I discovered unique gems.” The world holds a great appreciation for authentic Asian antiques particularly from China and Mongolia, and the culture, textures and blends of the black continent have led to groundbreaking ethic furniture. Ethnic furniture injects a warm ambience into your home as a result of the colours and jewel tones. The import furniture warehouse India Exotica was born in 1999, offering Marbella a unique selection of handpicked ethnic furniture. The company quickly grew to also supply decorators, hotels, shops and constructors throughout Europe and it was soon necessary to add a second, larger warehouse. To offer an even more extensive choice of items, close contacts were developed with specialist antique furniture sources in China allowing India Exotica to offer an even greater selection of furniture to their customers. The company now boasts over 800sqm of continuously changing unique and eclectic pieces on display as well as having an ever expanding network of sources ranging from India, China, Mongolia, Tibet, Indonesia and Thailand.

56

“When I began India Exotica, customers’ tastes were more focused on heavily carved rustic wood furniture and brightly coloured fabrics, primarily from India and Indonesia. Now, 13 years later, the trend is more subtle, with a more soothing blend of Zen minimalistic styles and buddha chill out, in contrast to the previous trend of vibrant Indian colours,” explained Morgan. With these changing trends we had to source our antiques from further afield in Asia. China, Thailand and Mongolia as well as India and Indonesia. Due to international travel having become more accessible, along with the development of the internet, people are nowadays much more knowledgeable of antiques. Countries like India, Thailand, China and Indonesia were previously considered mystical, faroff destinations which people have only heard of but now many people have visited all these locations.” “It is now much harder to find unique items than it was when I started out, back then there was what seemed to be an unlimited supply of amazing antiques and interesting items. Now I have to really search and search to find special pieces. Customers also tend to opt for

When asked about the development of ethnic furniture, Morgan emphasised the continuation of smooth lines, natural or bleached wood furniture, subtle neutral colours, and distressed whites; uncluttered spaces combined with that one impressive decorative piece, standing strong amidst the calm. “However, ethnic furniture is still a very individualistic type of furniture and luckily for me, beautiful Asian antiques are something which I don’t think will ever go out of style.” India Exótica Calle Fragua 43, Marbella Tel: 952 778 500 indiaexotica.com

Society Marbella asked Andrea BĂśck, director of Ambience Home Design, to share with us one of her recent bedroom transformations. It is hard to imagine that this calm and contemporary room was, up until recently, an extremely rustic space. Ambience were called in to completely modernize the area with the brief to turn this bedroom into an opulent retreat. It has been given a feeling of hotel luxury, with contrasting textures, warm taupe colours and high-end finishes. Andrea has demonstrated her mix-and-match approach to modern and traditional design elements in this decedent master suite, while her eye for the unusual keeps your attention moving around the room instead of fixing The bed is dominated by an oversized on any single object. Chesterfield style headboard, creating a theatrical milieu. The use of cork wallpaper with a metallic finish and silver backdrop adds a touch of understated glamour.

Antique boxes to store cushions have been given new life; reupholstered in the same material as the side tables. Andrea displays her mastery of scale by displaying contrasting sized pieces, creating different zones within the room. The dark voiles and curtains in combination with the three tone shag pile rug produce a cosy feeling.

The low-slung polished iron framed bedside tables have been customized with faux leather effect panelling, paired with side lamps in a matching deep texture, reflecting the client’s strong taste for visual stimulation.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN

ART T

he work of Antoni Gaudí continues to draw visitors time and again from across the globe, not only due to his pioneering talent and timeless vision, but the sheer intricacy and grandeur of his installations. Now, as then, his structures speak an outlandish romanticism that is quintessentially Spanish; the colour, the movement in the lines, the duende. Colour and concrete seem to clash and yet complement. There was uniformity in its seeming chaos, an impression of organic growth in non-movable structures, an absolute precision to his vision. In a recent Architectural Digest interview with Giorgio Armani, discussing the interior redesign of his Swiss retreat, he states, “ . . .as a rule the qualities that appeal to me most in . . . style are . . . precise lines, pure aesthetic, geometric shapes, and wealth of exquisite detailing”. These enduring concepts are as relevant to architectural design now as they were when Gaudí’s influence was blazing through the north of Spain. When regarding current and future trends in architecture, there is a clear direction towards the mark of the individual: the homeowner’s personal impact on their familial surroundings. “Increasing pluralisation of lifestyles, new technological options, and the search for identity in the face of globalization with its tendencies towards cultural transformation have led to the creation of a bewildering variety of architectural concepts.” (Europe Real Estate, europe-re.com)

60

More and more, owners are collaborating with designers to ensure unification in the design language of their property. One such team of designers enforcing the current concepts of architectural fusion whilst embracing the tones, textures and techniques of Gaudí are The Artspa. To quote from their literature, “The Artspa is a one of a kind, entirely individual and tailored to taste, spa pool; the ultimate in bespoke luxury.” In reality it is more, it is a piece of timeless artwork, moulded and sculpted to the landscape and environment into which it is designed and built: inspirational and evocative interactive pieces of art and sculpture. The company is a collaboration of artists, graphic designers and constructors, concentrating their artistic flair over the past decade on the numerous design projects, undertaken in and around the rugged Malaga Mountains and coastline

of southern Spain. As sons of artists, with a history of working in some of the major marketing and graphic design companies in London and overseas, it was their move to Spain, and their experience of living within the cultural melting pot of Andalucía, that enabled their artistic skill to really flourish. Considering their total commitment to producing functional and yet beautiful pieces, the step into the commission of spas was a natural progression for the team. Having seen huge demand for hot tubs worldwide and a resulting shift in the desire for something other than the plastic, offthe-shelf version, Artspa exploded onto the market in 2011, and has not looked back.

KEEP IT REAL

Roman-style baths for the very same reasons: a pampering day out, a moment to ‘treat yourself’. Artspa believe, why not experience this total sensory reinvigoration in the very place you should feel most relaxed: your home? The beauty, the mystique and the benefit of these retreats are more attainable than you might imagine. “Especially within the southern regions of Europe, pools and spas are practical means to adding value and desirability to properties, but what if your outdoor space is unconventional, seemingly too small, for a traditional pool? An Artspa can fit into almost any structurally sound space imaginable, making it a practical alternative to a manufactured hot tub. Its size and function can range from a compact, chic water-feature, to a romantic poolside retreat for two, to an Olympic sized exercise space, and beyond; and the finish, wholly integrated to its locale. It can fit you and your lifestyle like a proverbial glove.”

“The care and detail poured into every spa, ensures the individuals’ desires and preferences are always fulfilled. Close collaboration with the client is the essence to the bespoke approach to our spas.”

Also remember it is not just a hot tub spa; the Artspa is designed to be multifunctional as a spa, a fire pit, an ornament or feature, a statement of individualism and of luxurious indulgence. Of course, the reality is that budget is certain to be an obstacle to some, but

when it comes to bespoke luxury, can you really name a price? Any potential customer needs to understand that they are not purchasing a product in the traditional sense of the word, but commissioning a one-off piece of timeless art that will be a representation of them, their taste and their style that both they and their guests can enjoy and appreciate forever. Opportunities to commission bespoke items of art with a practical day-to-day use do not come around that often, and with a product where your only limitations are your imagination and desires, an Artspa can truly make your vision become reality. The Artspa team want to make the process as seamless and effortless as possible. “If you wish to be more hands-on with the design process, collect images, fabrics, colour swatches, pieces of tiling: things that excite you visually, things you wish reflected in the final piece. The consultation will take roughly an hour. The design team will then draft some ideas for your consideration. An estimate will also be presented. Up until this point, the consultation is free and all designs remain the property of Artspa.” To request your consultation, contact info@artspa.es or call Alex on: 659 078 592 artspa.es

From initial consultation, to inception as a simple pencil drawing to its final finishing, no detail of the Artspa is overlooked. Style and function work perfectly, side by side, to complement and enhance you and your specific standard of living. Most hot tubs are marketed as easy to clean, easy to manage, functional. However, Artspa argues that you can include these benefits without ignoring aesthetics, not merely offer a slight hue difference in its finish, a different wood to a decking. An Artspa is anything but generic. Anyone who has submerged themselves into a warm, massaging spa must have felt its benefits. Throughout history, spas have been frequented as a place of both relaxation and invigoration; a place for solitude, a place to socialize. Centuries later, people still go to hamams or

LETS

Twist AGAIN

T

hree months ago, Quay Property Group was instructed to design and build a contemporary shop to reflect a boutique style. The client, having previously operated from the site itself years before, stressed the importance of the shop having a fresh new look without isolating the former established clientele. This proved no problem for John May and the Quay Property Group; through their dedication and exceptional work ethic, they have been completing exclusive projects along the coast for the past four years, so when they were asked to

62

reinvent Twist Boutique in San Pedro, John was more than happy to oblige. Twist Boutique is the first fashion shop Quay Property Group has designed; therefore John spent lots of time with the client to fully understand exactly what was required. After several weeks of planning and discussing different options, from the logo to the company colour and shop design, it was evident that Twist needed to exude clean lines within the flooring, lighting and changing rooms and the layout needed to effectively showcase the exclusive fashion brands available.

Deciding on a soft egg shell blue for the company colour, Quay Property Group designed a very feminine yet contemporary logo with the Twist Boutique name in a raised 3D circle, using the blue as an accent colour. The blue lighting in the alcoves was actually a last minute addition to the shop. UDesign made the changing room mirrors with LED backlights, a product regularly used by Quay Property Group, as the client can actually select from a number of different colour settings. John believed this unique feature would be a deserving addition highlighting the somewhat plain alcoves. At the rear of the shop, Quay Property Group installed one-way glass. Commonly known as spy glass, these panels act not only as a means of security, but are perfect for mirrors, ideal for a stylish clothes boutique. To complete the ambience of the shop, Indian murals were installed in the shop windows, a design factor brought forward from the original shop layout, which truly completed the neutral, classy atmosphere, all works were completed in just eight weeks. Twist Boutique looks stunning. As Quay’s clients know, each job is metic-

ulously finished. All projects are completed to the highest quality and standards and Twist Boutique is no exception. Quay Property Group Expect The Exceptional Mellior Vasari, La Alzambra, Local 31, Puerto Banus Tel. 951 319 728 quaypropertygroup.com

Patricia Urquiola approached the outdoors starting from the theme of woven patters, reviving and personalising the concept with a traditional look in mind, but giving it a decisively contemporary look without using too much nostalgic influence. Vienna straw, with its decorative geometric shape, was her element of inspiration. The collection is enriched by a series of tables and service elements with steel structures. bebitalia.com

Monthy Legal Advice

Unfairly Dismissed?

Claim Your Compensation

No Win-No Fee

By Paula Nuñez de la Peña

The current economic climate is causing many companies to “cut corners” either by reducing jobs or delaying wage payments resulting in a higher unemployment rate in Spain than ever before! On many occasions we may have asked ourselves what are the causes and formalities to be followed if your employer decides to say goodbye. Well, it’s time to resolve your doubts. Experienced labour lawyer Paula Nuñez de la Peña is now offering No Win, No fee representation for those affected by these matters with the provision of simple documentation.

The Workers’ Charter states that a breach of contract can be considered due to: • Repeated absences and unexcused attendance or punctuality at work. • Lack of discipline or disobedience at work • The verbal or physical abuse of an employer or other persons working within the enterprise, or family members living with them. • Violation of contractual good faith and a breach of confidence in job performance. • The steady decline in performance in voluntary normal or agreed working. • Habitual drunkenness or addiction if causing a negative impact on the job. • Harassment on grounds of racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation and sexual harassment.

These causes are contained in the Statute of the workers and are considered generic causes for termination of the employment relationship; however, it is important to note that in the collective agreement the Company may have set out more specific causes. For example, the number of absences or to allow dismissal for behaviors that are considered as acts of indiscipline or disobedience at work. The disciplinar dismissal requires three basic formalities: • Written notice must be given to the employee • Written notice must include the causes that motivate the dismissal and the date on which it will take effect. • A collective agreement which may permit other formal requirements for dismissal The dismissal is considered appropriate when the facts that we recognized on the termination letter have been accredited in the sentence. This will validate work without compensation or wages during the proceedings, but however, will give the individual rights to claim unemployment benefit. When the dismissal is qualified as unfair or otherwise, it means it has not met the formal requirements. Where the dismissal is declared unfair, the employer, within five days of notification of the judgment either must: • Reinstate the worker, with entitlement to wages for the duration of the proceedings from the date of dismissal until the sentence.

OR • Give an allowance of 33 days salary per year of service, prorated for periods that were shorter than year to a maximum of 24 monthly payments. (Compensation shall be provided like this as of 12 February 2012.) • Give an allowance of 45 days salary per year of service, prior to February 12, 2012 at the rate of 33 days of salary per year of service for any service thereafter. The payment of compensation determined by the termination of employment contract (which will be understood to be on the date of termination was effective at the workplace) generates the right tounemployment benefits regardless of whether the individual receives a compensation or not. However the dismissal is void if the employer decides to opt for immediate reinstatement of the worker in his job with payment of unpaid wages from the date of dismissal until the date of reinstatement. If you’ve been unfairly dismissed you could claim your compensation No Win – No Fee! To claim owed salaries you must provide: • A Work Contract (or Work History from the social security) • A year’s worth of Payslips (or “base de cotización” from the social security or bank statements proving payments) To make a claim for unfair dismissal you must provide: •All of the above •A notification of Dismissal

As Head of the Labour Law Department at Lexland Abogados, Paula Nuñez regularly advises clients on all labour law related matters which amongst other services includes the drafting and termination of standard employee and senior executive employment contracts, bonus schemes, stock options, collective bargaining agreements and social security contributions. She also provides companies with guidance on staff restructuring, disciplinary procedures, pay reclamations and contract modifications. TORQUE TALK

Our in-depth motoring review

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the AUDI E-TRON SPYDER ith both a drink and a song W named after it, the affluent Southern Californian beachfront city of Malibu is nothing if not exotic. Rumour has it that pop star, Cher, a long-time Malibu resident, bought the houses on either side of hers to ensure total privacy. Even the Pacific Coast Highway, the part of US Highway One that runs through Malibu, is a legend in itself.

With such a concentration of wealth in Malibu, the locals are used to seeing supercars on their doorstep. However, as blasĂŠ as they may have become towards the average Ferrari or Porsche, the locals we encountered visibly did a double take when they caught sight of the Audi e-tron Spyder.

Audi’s plug-in hybrid concept car may not possess the visual shock factor of a razor sharp Lamborghini, but it makes up for it with a modern shape and exquisite detailing. While unfamiliar to onlookers as a total entity, it bears many distinctive Audi design clues,

85

TORQUE TALK some familiar as well as a few that point to the future. Its descent from the R8 Spyder is clear, but the e-tron Spyder is tauter and better proportioned. It is smaller and narrower than the R8, looking exactly as big as it needs to be. The current Audi corporate front grille with its chiselled top corners is there in full measure. But where that is a fairly two dimensional shape on current production models, by having the horizontal bars turn the

corner under the chisel line, the e-tron Spyder grille takes on a more three-dimensional look. Where the large side intakes fight for attention with the centre grille on the R8, they have been relegated to a more traditional supporting role on the e-tron Spyder. And instead of visually underlining the more geometrically pure headlamp unit, the new upright intakes offer both visual support and a counterbalance in size and form that works very well.

86

If you were to put an R8 next to the e-tron Spyder, you would also see that where the R8’s nose detailing is all on one plane, the e-tron Spyder uses three subtly different ‘layers’ to make its point. The grille, headlamps and side intakes are on the first layer, which becomes more set back as it turns the corner to the second layer. This expands from a subtle line under the front grille into the curvaceous wheel arch flares that start the Spyder’s strong shoulder line.

This strong shoulder line extends aft from there, underlining the glazed cabin area before it turns into the sweeping line over the rear arches. This is the line that a car stylist draws first in a concept sketch, from which the entire design emanates. The big wheel cut-outs are perfectly radiused, and wear a double lip that visually and structurally strengthens their form. The 20-inch diameter wheels shod with 245/30ZR20 and 265/30ZR20 tyres look terrific as objects in themselves and provide strong visual support to the design.

Pulled out to the edges of the wheel arches, they help to give the e-tron Spyder its drawn and homogenous look. Made from aluminium and carbon-fibre, these intricate turbinelook wheels are each assembled from 66 components. The third layer of the surface treatment starts with the front spoiler lip in body colour, which is aerodynamically supported by a naked carbonfibre air splitter. It continues down the cars flanks into the wide and deeply

sculpted side sills that kick outwards towards the rear. They serve to emphasise the wider rear haunches that help to give the car its squat and purposeful stance. Under the Spyder’s taut skin, low weight and high stiffness comes from a simplified version of the R8’s familiar Audi Space Frame (ASF), wrapped in carbon-fibre reinforced polymer panels (CFRP). The suspension uses the double wishbone front suspension from the TT RS with the rear suspension from the R8.

TORQUE TALK Audi was very brave to let its multimillion euro prototype be driven quickly up and down a twisty canyon road with rocks on either side ready to take a chunk out of its expensive carbon-fibre bodywork. But they were also intent on convincing us that they mean business with a plug-in hybrid sports car that could be in production as early as 2014. Most concept cars do not drive particularly well as the emphasis is on getting them to look right

for static presentations. Thus, the convincing driving dynamics of the Audi e-tron Spyder came as a surprise, and then a source of genuine excitement as the drive progressed. With spring and damper rates tuned to the 1,450kg weight of the car, the e-tron Spyder immediately felt balanced and intuitive from behind the wheel. The first thing you notice is just how good the electric power steering is.

Major car manufacturers spent many years trying to get hydraulic power assisted steering systems to match the tactility and connected feel of manual designs, now they have to do the same all over again with electric power steering. As it stands, this Audi system is one of the very best electric power steering systems I have come across. Medium weighted, it has just the right amount of as-

sistance and just the right level of feedback for the Spyder’s chassis inputs. Couple that to the Spyder’s perfect 50/50 weight distribution, and you have a car that feels like a big go kart, turning in perfectly and tracking securely through the bends. It feels instinctively like an extension of the driver, a remarkable achievement for a vehicle that has not gone through the thorough chassis development required of a production car.

On the twisty mountain roads, the compact Spyder felt perfectly at home, ducking and diving around the switchbacks and cambers like a flyweight boxer. Running purely on electric power on the way down, the extra load demands of accelerating uphill frequently brought the turbo-diesel motor on-line during the ascent back to our staging post halfway up the mountain. Al fresco driving always makes you more aware of both your surround-

ings and what your mount is doing. In the old days, the rattle of a diesel behind your head would have been a source of annoyance and an eventual headache with ringing in your ears on shut down. Not anymore. While the new third generation 3.0 V6 twin-turbo diesel is no bent-crank V8, its subdued offbeat note and induction roar are not displeasing when they chime in smoothly on demand. Best of all though is the unbridled push in the back from its massive torque. Cou-

87

TORQUE TALK ple that to the added twisting force from the electric motors when you demand full throttle, and you have the recipe for some serious forward thrust. “We have 300hp and 650Nm of torque from the longitudinally midmounted V6 bi-turbo diesel, fed to the wheels via a seven-speed STronic gearbox,” explained Dipl.-Ing. Matthias Seer, from the Concept Car Development department. “An additional 87hp and 352Nm of torque comes from the two asynchronous electric motors driving the front wheels. The total system output is 388hp with over 900Nm of torque.” In normal driving, the Quattro drive management system sends 75 percent of its power to the rear wheels and 25 percent to the front. A very

88

precise torque vectoring system aids handling by selectively applying the brakes to slow individual wheels or adding precise millisecond long bursts of power to speed a wheel up. This finely alters the cars cornering attitude, allowing understeer or oversteer to be instantly neutralised at source. The lithium-ion battery stores up to 9.1 kWh of energy and is located in the front compartment. The battery takes about an hour to charge from a 400-volt three-phase electricity supply. Fuel economy is sensational. The headline numbers are 2.2 L/100km or 106.92 US mpg on average with just 59g of CO2/km. In electric only driving mode, the Spyder has a 50 km (31 mile) range with a 60km/h top

TORQUE TALK speed. Given these numbers, its 50-litre fuel tank can take it over 1,000km or 621.37 miles. “We have full hybrid cars like the Q5 quattro, and the front-wheeldrive A6 and A8 Hybrids in series production now,” explained Dietrich Engelhart, Head of Strategy and Technology - Vehicle Electrification. “The next step, as exemplified by the e-tron Spyder, is plug-in Hybrids, a technology that could be applied in production for the next generation A4 and A7 models.” “In styling terms, the e-tron Spyder is an extension of the design language we began with the R8, and is a hint of the future,” explained Mirko Koehnke, from the Audi design department.

“The big curved wheel arches and other design elements show that the new car clearly has the same DNA as the R8, but here an emphasis was put on showing ‘lightness and not just technology,” he added. “The side sills are designed to make the car look grounded, yet they also look thin rather than chunky. This adds to the light appearance and the fact that the body looks like it is placed over the frame.” “Past designs looked like they were carved from a solid block,” he continued. “The new expression we worked on here was to make the car look like the body is placed over the structure like an athlete wearing a Lycra suit. The long curved windscreen further underlines the cars singular sporty intent.”

89

TORQUE TALK Audi claim a 0-100km/h time of 4.4 sec and an electronically limited 250km/h top speed. But that is a moot point in the topless Spyder where the thrill is in the acceleration and its ability to hug the curves on a twisty road like the proverbial groundhog.

Normally, I would add the soundtrack as the third element here, but when the e-tron Spyder is running on electric motors alone, that translates into the sound of the wind and road noise. This is a big sea change that traditional sportscar fans will need some time to acclimatise to.

Seldom do I look at a car and see that it is just right from all angles in both form and detail. But the taut, elegant shape of the Audi e-tron Spyder pushed all my buttons, and I could not help but think of it as the embodiment of American architect, Louis Sullivan’s famous saying, ‘form follows function’.

As the sun slipped lower in the Californian sky, the e-tron Spyder’s perfectly smooth silver paintwork reflected the softer, orange tinged glow, adding further eye appeal.

The Audi e-tron Spyder concept is simply one of the most beautiful roadsters ever designed, and a contemporary classic. But would it sell? My answer paraphrases that immortal line from the 1989 film, Field of Dreams,

“If you build it, they will come.”

The fillets of salmon, skewered prawns, succulent beef and juicy chicken were all drizzled with their complementary sauces; soy & chilli, garlic, rock salt and a peanut satay respectively. The brochettes were all grilled to perfection, and accompanied by a generous helping of crispy salad. For our main platter, we sampled the succulent entrecôte ‘New York Strip’. Cooked to our request of medium it harmonized exquisitely with the homemade, stacked chunky chips, florettes of broccoli and creamy hollandaise sauce.

Finally, we were presented with an assiette of desserts, all accompanied by sauces homemade by the gifted kitchen. The trio of puddings was beautifully presented, a shame to destroy, but too moreish not to delve right in! Ours consisted of a tarte tatin of caramelised apples, a chocolate fondant made with Saint Dominique cocoa and a sticky toffee pudding, which effortlessly married with the accompanying caramel sauce. So delicious infact that the chef kindly left us with the extra jus to gluttonously add to our already overflowing desert plate.

To follow, our starter dish, another fish wonderment, this time grilled fillet of sea bass accompanied with fried tagiolini, shredded vegetables and a sundried tomato puree. The lubina was so flaky; you almost didn’t need cutlery to part it from its crisp skin. Due to the size of the fish, we were thankful for its light accompaniment, served much like a stir-fry, airy and fresh on the palate, with the sundried tomato paste bringing a much welcome tang. For our main dish, succulent chicken spheres bursting with a foie gras, brie and leek mix, enveloped in a truffle

The smells permeating from the kitchen as the staff waits on the diners attentively, wanting to please with their home cooked cuisine, all bursting with flavours created using local ingredients. Sounds like bliss right? Well as it happens, you don’t have to travel to Italy to experience heaven like this. Simply visit La Fiorentina in Benahavis. Located opposite the Crown Plaza in Estepona, this haven of authenticity is a mere 15-minute drive along the coast. La Fiorentina offers authentic Tuscan cuisine, without compromising on the bustling ambience of the Costa del Sol. Their original stone oven adds to the authentic Italian feel, which gives a special flavour to the pizzas. The pastas and desserts are all freshly produced on site. Delicious Italian gastronomy has been replicated in many restaurants in Marbella, however the cuisine at La Fiorentina is like nothing I have ever tasted. The flavours and textures are clearly thought-out by the chefs, meaning the dishes are created with the diners in mind.

Open seven days a week, La Fiorentina was opened after many years of success and acclaim from restaurant De’Medici. In contrast to La Fiorentina, De’Medici is formal, elegant and more private. Even though the prices are much more economic in La Fiorentina, both restaurants share the same premium quality of food. The menu variety in De’Medici follows a more fish and meat avenue, whereas La Fiorentina offers a delectable selection of pizzas and pastas. They also offer a menu full of special dishes, which changes on a ten-day cycle. The brainchild of De’Medici and La Fiorentina is Brigitte Pigani (pictured left with her son Alessandro). Her passion for her job is contagious; so hands-on with the staff and diners, it’s clear to see Brigitte loves her work. Brave to

open La Fiorentina in the middle of the Spanish crisis of January last year, it has certainly paid off. Brigitte’s vision was to create an option of a more casual, fun, quality Italian restaurant. Her son, Alessandro, is as hands-on as his mother, helping out in both restaurants. They are a lively fusion of German and Italian, between them speaking four languages, so their clients reflect the multi-cultural owners. They both know how important client interaction is, so always ensure that an owner is on site. Brigitte and the friendly staff served us three delectable dishes, two pastas and one salad. As we rapidly demolished the heaped platter of fettuccine carpaccio, it was instantly evident that the predominantly Italian native kitchen at La Fiorentina had created the pasta fresh that morning. The sage and butter sauce coating the palatable pasta, along with the shaved parmigiano reggiano, combined for a light composition of flavour and texture. The ensalada de lubina was a welcome change to the conventional

Caesar salad found in many restaurants along the coast. The sea bass made for a different consistency and the flaky fish working beautifully with the crisp streaky bacon and creamy Fiorentina sauce. Our last main, and definite all round favourite, was the ‘Brigitte’ pasta, again homemade, as all pastas are. Considered their most special dish on their bulging menu, named after La Fiorentina’s vivacious manager, uses a simple and light sauce, but all the while being extremely tasty and effervescent. The plump prawns, rocket, cherry tomatoes and fresh chilli culminated in a light and clean course, the bite of the chilli constantly keeping your palate entertained.

It has been reported that many of La Fiorentina’s dedicated clients return to sample more of their delicious sweets, and it’s easy to see why. Perfectly authentic, La Fiorentina offers luscious dishes at extremely affordable prices. The ambience there is quite difficult to put into words, so go and try it for yourself, you will not be disappointed. Yusto-Giner

JOSÉ NOGUERO (Huesca,1969) Yusto-Giner Gallery´s exhibition gives us more than enough shows of the mastery and artistic techniques in the paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations and videos of this multidisciplinary artist, who lives and works in Berlin. His work is the result of a deep reflection on inner silence. The central axis in the perception of Noguero is the impulse toward wholeness that we share with all living things and how we live in a universe that encompasses both the physical space (reality) and the mental landscape no less real, made up of our illusions, prejudices, fears and hopes. yusto-giner.com

Poligono Gallery Jorge Rando (Malaga, 1941) ‘We Are Surrounded By Small Passions’ Passion is a hot topic at the time of Easter. The Poligono Gallery organise an exhibition of the renowned Málaga-born painter and sculptor Jorge Rando and his work on The Passion. The exhibition is open from April 4 through to June 15 by appointment and will show key works examining the theme of The Passion in Rando’s painting. From The Passion of Christ in his final days, a recurring theme in the History of Art, though Rando clarifies: “It is not a dark passion, but a passion of light in which Jesus Christ steps down from the cross”. In shades of magenta, green and black, with touches of yellow, red and blue, Rando uses his neo-expressionistic language to depict a suffering Christ who represents all humankind. The exhibition will also show works from his series Prostitutes as well as Maternities, where the artist reflects on the social problem of an uncomfortable and embarrassing reality. Faces disfigured by the stroke, vivid colours and structured compositions are some of the features of this series. poligonogallery.com

KIDZ CORNER Everything your need to keep the little ones entertained. Compiled by Luna Siebrasse

Easter Egg Hunt

The traditional Easter morning egg hunt is a fun and exciting game for families, hiding Easter eggs and treasures and getting children to run around to search for them. You can group the kids in teams younger with older to make it fair, and give out clues or even maps. One of the baskets may contain a special gift, this gift should be something that can be shared, to prevent from upset. The more exciting you make the event the more memorable it will be for the children. Tip: Film the mayhem!

Easter Arts and Crafts

Here are some fun and easy Easter craft ideas to entertain the little ones over the holidays. Get them completely hands-on and let their creativity flow. For the Easter egg decoration there are infinite options, you can glue on glitter, little pieces of fabrics, buttons, bows, dye them by dipping them into water bowls with dye powder colour, or colour them with crayons and watercolours. You can boil the eggs, this makes them heavy and easy to handle. Another way is to make a hole on each side and blow the liquid out, then pass a string through, which is an ideal tool to hang them. To make fun collages, drawings and paintings to aid the kids’ inspiration, print out images that you like and use it as a reference.

Bunny Muffin Recipe

Why not Easter theme your baking and let the kds have a go at decorating? You can frost cookies, muffins and cakes with colourful sprinkling of sparkling sugar and make all kind of figures and faces. To make these little sculptures you need a mix with icing sugar that dries to a smooth and hard matt finish. In a bowl beat 1 egg white with 1tbsp. of fresh lemon juice. Add 1 1/2 sifted powdered sugar and beat on low speed until smooth. Add food colouring paste or powder. The icing needs to be used immediately or covered as royal icing hardens when exposed to air. Grease 12 three-inch muffin pan cups. Cream together the butter, the margarine and the sugar. Beat in the eggs, salt, nutmeg and baking powder. Stir in the flour and milk alternatively until mixture is combined. Fill muffin cups to the top. Bake at 350F in the oven for about twenty minutes. Allow to cool for a few minutes and start decorating! Ingredients list: 2 medium eggs 3 cups of flour 1 cup of milk 1 cup of sugar 5 tbsp. of butter 5 tbsp of margarine der 3 tbsp. of baking pow 1 tbsp. of salt 1/2 tsp. of nutmeg

BEWARE... BEWARE Between now and the middle of May, I’d recommend everyone to be extremely careful of the poisonous Pine Processionary Caterpillars. These innocent looking creatures can be deathly to your pet. When stressed or disturbed they shed their fine poisonous hairs which provokes rashes, irritation and pain on the skin, if the hairs get into the eye, nose or throat area, it can end in horror. Children have been known to go temporarily blind from rubbing their eyes after picking them up. Dogs are most at risk by sniffing the ground where the caterpillars march. Many dogs have lost their lives or their tongues from this! If a person or animal shows signs of shock, get them to a hospital or vet inmediately.

ALL ABOUT RABBITS...

Thinking of getting a rabbit? There are 45 recognized breeds to choose from, but keep in mind that rabbit live an average of ten years, this is a big commitment but very worth it for the right owner. Proper nutrition is vital for a rabbits well-being. Hay, which needs to be available to pet rabbits at all times, is vital to their dental and digestive health. Rabbits cannot vomit, they need hay to assist the digestive system and prevent fur balls in their stomach. The main diet should consist of pellets and hay (preferably Tymothy). Don’t use straw as it has no nutritional value. Most vegetables are good but feed them fruit only in small doses because of its sugar content. Some foods are harmful like iceberg lettuce, ask your vet for a full list or check online at rspca.org.uk. Rabbits get very stressed out when travelling or when placed in unfamiliar environments, so when you go on vacation it’s best to get a bunny-sitter. Rabbits need social interaction and company, plenty of exercise, and a lot of enriched activities. If you keep them in a cage you will need toys and exercise facilities. Did you know that you can train your bunny to use a litterbox? This is perfect if you want to let them roam free. Rabbits are very curious and persistent creatures, they have an incessant, unremitting desire to chew, they will chew anything they come across; cables, wires, furniture, etc. For this you need to bunny proof your home. If you decide to keep them outdoors you will be happy to learn that rabbit droppings make an excellent garden fertilizer, but please be aware that rabbits can suffer from heat stroke and will need shade and large amounts of fresh water available at all times. When rabbits are happy, they will jump and twist, this is called a ‘binky’ and they can purr similar to a cat. Rabbits can start breeding as early as three to four months of age and the gestation period is only 30 days. If you are thinking of getting more than one, consider nuturing. Interesting facts A rabbits’ teeth never stop growing. The only place a rabbit sweats is through the pads on its feet. A not so cute fact is that rabbits eat their own night droppings called cecotropes. Adult bunnies can weigh between two and 20lbs depending on breed. Rabbits can jump 36” and higher. Rabbits can see behind them, but have a blind spot in front of their face. Predators can literally scare a rabbit to death.

Marbella-Eye

James Argent, Joey Essex and Gemma Collins enjoyed a night of champagne and dancing at celebrity haunt La Sala in Puerto Banus, owned by numerous Premiership footballers. The TOWIE stars had been in Spain to take part in a boot camp in the hopes of getting fit and shedding the pounds, however we are not quite sure where alcohol and fine food fit into their so called health regime? Although their diet plan seems to have derailed it appears Arg´s love life may have benefited from their overseas adventure as he was seen dancing the night away with blonde bombshell, Ellie Mackenzie. Michael Buble tribute act and La Sala resident singer, Peet Rothwell, joined up with James for a crowd pleasing duet. It wasn’t only the customers that enjoyed the surprise treat, with Arg tweeting, ‘Im (sic) gona do a duet with the best Michael Buble Tribute act ever, #ThatsAmore then we are onto LINEKERS PUERTO BANUS MARBELLA come down peeps!’

MC Café is fast becoming the hot spot for local fashion showcases. Guests gathered at the stylish eatery for a vibrant, trendy fashion show featuring collections from Fashion Room, the stylish boutique located in Marina Banus. The masterminds behind Fashion Room also own and operate two boutiques, Alta Moda, in Puerto Banus. The sophisticated audience enjoyed a mouth-watering three course dinner whilst a DJ provided soulful sounds adding to the chic ambience.
