An injury forced him to end his football career early, so he turned his attention to the family industry and entered the ring with the WWE. Famously feuding with wrestler Steve Austin and winning the WWE Heavyweight championship many times, The Rock went onto win a combined 17 WWE titles over his acclaimed career.

This month marks a quarter of a century since the Spice Girls burst onto the scene with their debut single, and to mark the occasion they are unveiling a previously unheard song, Feed Your Love. Feed Your Love did briefly leak online in 2016 as a 40-second snippet, but this will mark the first time fans have been able to hear the track in its entirety. They then cut it into some 5000 slices - each around 1/1000th the width of a human hair (and you struggle with onions!) before analysing each and every one with an electron microscope. At this stage, the guys at Google, not short a processor or two, used machine learning to reassemble the 5000 2-D slices into a 3-D model, applying machine learning to reconstruct the hundreds of million of tendrils linking each neuron and creating the Google Earth equivalent of the brain, albeit one small portion... Just another day at the office then?! This monumental undertaking has the scientific community enthralled at the possibilities it offers for analysis and discovery. The human genome was first mapped around two decades ago and we’re still learning from that breakthrough. Though researches have only scratched the surface of the huge wealth of new data, some unexpected quirks have already been identified, such as message-sending neuron axons forming intricate coiled pairs, like intertwined snakes. Though the neurological significance of this symmetrical dance of cells is still to be determined, it’s a novel observation and one of many we’re expecting to find as we deepen our understanding of the most complex object in our known universe.

Featuring some 100 billion neurons forming somewhere in the order of 100 trillion connections (even in people who say “ALL lives matter”, “Trust Boris” and “The Big Bang Theory is funny”), the brain is itself-bogglingly sophisticated, despite being 73% water. I kind of feel like it’s the other 27% doing the heavy lifting – I just used my brain to do that sum but ask a cup of water what percentage you’re left with if you remove 73% and I guarantee you won’t get an answer!

The brain continues to grow until around the age of 25, then actually begins shrinking from your 30s or 40s, gaining momentum from 60ish. It’s why some people get more right wing with age. Scientists ascertained that information travels through neurons and out to muscles at up to 268 mph, which is only actually marginally quicker than a Bugatti Veyron 16.4, but since the human body is a relatively small racetrack, it’s quick enough to seem automatic.

The rest of the human race use 100% and engage both halves simultaneously to do anything.

Survival classics such as breathing, digesting food and squinting in sunlight are carried out automatically and unconsciously and the brain expends so much energy on essential functions that it necessarily limits “non essential” tasks such as short term memory to a workable level. We can generally recall new phone numbers just long enough to dial them, but then they’re gone, lest our brains get too overworked with life’s trivia to remind us to suck air in through our gobs.

Each and every one of us has an incredible gift between our ears and we owe it to ourselves to use it the best we can.

Hydration, sufficient rest and exercise are all key to healthy brain activity. Remember to rest and hydrate extra after exercise or it swings the other way! Dehydration severely affects concentration and memory, so if you’re feeling particularly scatty, perhaps you just need to find the nearest tap.

Science has once again reminded us what the politics of division seems intent on negating each and every one of us has an incredible gift between our ears and we owe it to ourselves to use it the best we can. Now go drink some water.

There’s a famous quote from Henry Ford (yes, him of the motor car),

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.”

hat Henry was talking about was belief. More specifically our selfbelief. If we believe we can achieve something then the research says that we’re far more likely to achieve it. Likewise, if we really believe that we can’t (despite whatever protests we might make), then we’re unlikely to hit that goal. We see this all the time with clients when they come to us. They’ve experienced years of various diets with the same predictable “yo-yo” results. As well as all the fad workouts leading to short term success followed be falling back to where they were.

The same is true when we do the “internal” work. Yes we might read the book on super-charging our confidence, but if we feel sluggish in our body and we don’t like what we see when we look in the mirror, how can we feel like we’re truly reaching our potential?

On the flip side, we also see this when people come to us feeling that something is missing from their lives. They sense they wish to be more, to achieve more, to have more confidence. Often they’ll have done a ton of selfdevelopment work, with their bookshelf groaning under the weight of variations on The Secret…but nothing changes. Where we go wrong is forgetting that we’re holistic beings. We forget that we need to work on the whole wonderful package of being human. All too often we’ll have a physical goal and do what we call the “external” work to get there. What we fail to do is address our underlying beliefs about who we are and what we can achieve. If deep down we don’t believe that we can really sustain being a fit, healthy

person for the long term, then our motivation is only going to take us so far, before the power of our beliefs pulls us back.

...people get hung up on the external work, and how hard it will be. They persuade themselves it’s tough to find time to train (short workouts are the name of the game!), and that eating healthy, balanced food is too restrictive and make them miserable.

Actually it’s the internal work that is harder, and in a twist of paradox, even more vital to our long term success. It’s harder because it’s very hard to see, feel or judge the progress. If you hit the gym for a month and clean up your eating, you’ll feel and see results. You work on your limiting beliefs, how do you know that what you’re doing is even working? Plus it can seem hard. Training the body is easy compared to training the mind, but training your mind is soooo much more rewarding, and gives you lifelong results in the joy department!

Here’s another not so secret secret for you. You cannot out perform your own self-identity. Whatever or however you see yourself (shaped by your beliefs), is the limit of your achievement. The good news is you can change your beliefs to forge a new identity aligned with your goals. It’s not easy, but it can be done. Before we go into the how (because that’s what we all want to know), let’s look at a real life example to illustrate how important this is. It’s a well observed phenomena that big lottery winners from disadvantaged backgrounds invariably end up blowing the huge sums of money they win. We’re not talking a few thousand Euros, we’re talking amounts that you would think you could never spend. But these people do. There are a number of reasons why, but one of the main drivers is that their experience has given them a self-identity of scarcity. Now our sub-conscious is a wonderful piece of software, but it’s role is to keep us safe, and safe for the subconscious means familiar. This means anything that challenges the status quo is perceived as a threat, and we’ll start doubling down on our existing behaviours and beliefs to get back to that familiar state. In this case being poor.

Well we can leverage a very useful theory from psychology called congruence theory, which states that our beliefs and behaviours need to be aligned for us to feel congruent. When one opposes the other, either the belief or behaviour will have to change to move us out of dissonance and back to congruence. So far so good (BTW this was the basis for early brainwashing experiments!) - note that the belief part nearly always overcomes the behaviour. Let’s go back to our real life example of wanting to feel more confident. See how if we’re trying to install the new belief of confidence, but we feel bad in our body, that we’re not in congruence. What if we start working out (behaviour), rehearsing being confident in different situations (behaviour), until we start to feel good in our body? Then we’ve aligned our beliefs and behaviour. Here’s a little tip we use with clients (again leveraging congruence theory). When you reinforce the new behaviour with the new belief at the same time (and vice versa) you speed up

the building of new neural pathways in the brain and accelerate towards your new self-identity. This is where the power of affirmations comes from. Here’s an example, while on the way to the gym, and while working out, you keep reminding yourself how much you enjoy working out, how much you love the way it makes you feel, the results you get and why you want it in the first place. Tell yourself a new story and align the belief and the behaviour. So, here’s what you need to do. Keep affirming your new beliefs, actually live them, and affirm them while you’re doing your new behaviour. You’ll be amazed at the changes you start to feel.

SHIFTING YOUR BELIEFS FOR SUCCESS • Look at your goal and consider what beliefs you would need to help you succeed at that goal. You can model other people who’ve achieved what you want if you like. • Consider what behaviours you would need to get there. • Distill those new beliefs down into five to ten easy to remember affirmations. • Repeat them every morning, every night, every spare moment AND while you’re actually doing your new behaviour. • Be patient. Often we realise the results are coming only when we’re challenged with a situation and realise we’re responding differently - in a way more aligned with our new self-identity.

Lot’s of these lottery winners report being happier once all the money is gone. No wonder, because they’re back in harmony with their self-identity. Now, none of us want that for ourselves do we? So how do we go about shifting our beliefs to create a new self-identity?

Historically, women have been born into patriarchal societies that only link their value to aesthetics and sex appeal. Expectations about a women’s figure, and how she should act/present herself were predominated via the male gaze & marriageability. Throughout the centuries and in many different cultures, this message has been loud and clear.

Take Victorian England as an example, women we’re expected to live and breath in corsets and crinolines moulding the culturally idealised hourglass figure (18-inch waist and large hips/ backside). This gave some women a higher social status and a better chance of attracting a husband, but some corsets were so unforgiving that they resulted in medical consequences including deformed ribs and fainting due to restricted lung capacity (yikes)! Today women have more equal rights and find worth through careers and other pursuits. Yet despite some improvements, this underlying message has never left. Some would argue this message has instead grown as picture-perfect marketing fills our subconscious minds causing 24-hour platforms for comparison. Marketing companies prey on women’s insecurities loading streams of edited depictions of the “ideal” women prototype all in the name of sales & economic reward. Instagram is bombarded with current trends, wellness hacks, summer shred challenges and unsustainable & frequently dangerous diets offering huge results in tiny windows of time. Extreme and edited

before-and-after shots are used tactically so It’s not surprising that women start to attain unrealistic expectations of themselves & become obsessed with what they think they need to “fix”. Comparison between individuals is a recipe for unhappiness, especially when the playing field isn’t level. When scrolling through your carefully curated social feeds have you considered the facts?

Commercial images are constructed (period). • Individuals on wellness/ fashion covers, sports professionals and influencers make a living from their bodies. Their body and or appearance is their career requiring near-total dedication to strictly managing all aspects of their life (e.g. sleep food relationships etc), their sole focus is often ticking all the checkpoints to become “worthy” of front cover status and or elite accomplishment. • Professional athletes and bodybuilders may train up to a whopping 30 hours per week! Although positive changes to both muscular function, overall wellness and aesthetics can be made from 3-5 hours of training in a given week striving for elite body composition or performance levels is simply unrealistic.

• Celebs, top athletes and the alike often have staff to support them from trainers, make-up artists, chefs, photographers and more... • We never know the full story of someone’s transformation or what it’s taken for them to reach that stage (nutrition, hormones, surgery, drugs, lifestyle, stress and happiness). • We don’t know how the content has been edited and to what extent. In today’s society professional editing via various apps is available and accessible to everyone! • We don’t know if what the individual or company is saying is truthful, embellished to sell or even has an ounce of accuracy. • We don’t know or see what happens to these models/people before and or after the photo shoot or event, fitness and beauty do not come hand in hand with wellness.

In reality, each beings appearance and life is unique from someone’s age, heritage, activity level, life stressors, nutrition, medical history, social support, sleep patterns and financial accessibility meaning comparing yourself or person A to person B is 100% unproductive. As a society and individually we need to move away from this mindset of comparison...

Well yes, fairly accurate. Part of a text on how the architects at UDesign go about their business? It could be. But it isn’t. This text was written by Victoria Hale some years ago for an American heating systems blog (WarmlyYours), and refers to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), one of the most famous American

He would undoubtedly be pleased that his ideas have survived into the 21st century, and happy to see that the architectural artistry he practiced to

perfection is still alive and well. But he would not see, at first glance, the huge advances made in the area of environmental friendliness and sustainability. Which is not to say that he was oblivious of the problem. His mid-20th century ranch houses had high ceilinged living rooms and open kitchens, and along with large glass windows, they presented a challenge to heat efficiently, as heat rises and remains trapped in high spaces. His response was to install radiant floor heating, thus taking advantage of rising heat.

1. LET THERE BE LIGHT

If you have one thing inside a modern Mediterranean home, it needs to be abundant light. Interiors should never feel dim or cramped, but rather, light, open and breezy. Make the most of natural light with large energy-efficient windows, sliding glass doors and using light window treatments like a net curtain in a light tone, and you can always incorporate a hint of colour with a beautiful decorative curtain!

5. DECORATE WITH BALANCE

If you’re decorating in a coastal style, its fine to add in a few seaside touches, like shells, glass bottles, or woven baskets, but the key is not to go overboard and stay away from anything too cliched. Avoid anchor prints or too many stripes, and instead take your lead from elements of the coast: a collection of blue ceramic vases, natural tree stump tables, a single oversized coral placed in a bookshelf, or elements made of wicker like suspension lamps above an outdoor dining table, or woven baskets to hold extra throw pillows and blankets in a lounging area. I love incorporating texture and nature with pampas grass or a natural bouquet of flowers in handmade vases, and placing coffee books around a home that have a theme related to the coast, whether it’s about traveling to top beach destinations around the world or about surfing spectacular waves!

6. ADD ELEMENTS THAT SURPRISE I believe that every room should have something unexpected in it, whether it’s a statement lamp, an interesting sculpture or an amazing piece of art hanging on the wall. Normally these unique elements break up the repetition of style or colour in a room and, if done tastefully, they can be truly the focal

point and conversation starter of the ambience! I’m currently in love with this oversized wireline suspension lamp from Flos - an object that can be positioned half way between art and industrial design perfect for incorporating a contemporary feel to a lounge space or bedroom area!

7. EMPHASIZE INDOOR OUTDOOR LIVING

It’s no wonder why indoor outdoor living is an essential part of coastal living, as warm temperatures invite you to spend more time in the outdoors! If you want to create a sense of flow to the outdoors, continue with similar furniture styles, rugs, and other accessories to tie the spaces together cohesively. You can also extend the flooring to the exterior to draw the eye out and make the area appear larger - just make sure that the tiles used outdoors are suited for use in any weather! Sliding pocket glass doors also provide the perfect opportunity to blend your interior and exterior environments seamlessly and unite ambiences for perfect entertaining for all of your friends and family!

ECO LUXURY AT THE 1 HOTEL IN SOUTH BEACH MIAMI Welcome to my new Travel & Architecture section! I thought it could be super interesting to share as it’s something I’m very passionate about, and over the years I’ve had a lot of questions about places I’ve visited, especially the unique cities and hotels that have amazing interior design and architecture, so I’d love to shed a light on these wonderful spots so maybe you are inspired to visit them too on your next trip! This month, I’m taking you to my latest trip to Miami where I had the pleasure of attending Miami Fashion Week! The week was jampacked with amazing events, from attending the opening of the new Porcelanosa store in Miami, to the Designers Dinner at the super cool Chotto Matte nikkei restaurant, and my favourites were of course enjoying the fabulous fashion shows at the Ice Palace Studios as well as the grand Benefit Gala Dinner at the Faena Hotel. During this trip, one of the hotels that I truly fell in love with was the gloriously beautiful 1 Hotel in South Beach Miami. 1 Hotel’s entire brand is built around a fierce commitment to sustainability, which also happened to be one of the main focuses of Miami Fashion Week in its aim to support designers that had an eco conscious approach to creating and manufacturing fashion items. Though the hotel’s beachfront location is truly stunning, it quickly became clear to me that the visitors to 1 Hotel were looking for something that went beyond that…

The hotel’s reliance on local vendors and artisans became evident from the moment I stepped in to the lobby, with reclaimed wood on the walls and gorgeous pieces of driftwood furniture. This focus on giving back to the environment and the community combined with a regular schedule of wellness events, including sunset meditation were some of the differential factors that immediately made me fall in love with the philosophy of 1 Hotel. Inside, the decor scheme of beachy whites and beiges tastefully coupled with wood accents and greenery created a luxe but comfortable setting. Clusters of couches, tree stump tables, and a vertical garden dominated the large

A concierge desk made of one large piece of wood, wooden ceilings, white rock walls, energy-efficient elevators, and large plants behind the check-in desks continued the ecofriendly green vibe. eautiful house in a beautiful place. That more or less sums up what the good life is all about, and the lucky owners of the beautiful villa that UDesign have just created on the island of Bali must surely be convinced that the good life will be theirs for the rest of their lives.

Bali is one of the thousands of islands that make up Indonesia, just east of Java, being part of what used to be the Dutch East Indies. At only eight degrees south of the equator, with white sandy beaches, coral reefs all around the island and an evenly warm temperature throughout the year, it comes as close as we get to paradise on earth.

THE INSPIRATION FOR THE DESIGN CAME FROM THE BALI LOOK, WHICH WE ALL ASSOCIATE WITH THE ISLAND: NATURAL MATERIALS SUCH AS WOOD, STONE AND ABUNDANT WATER...

Balinese architecture is traditionally open, with no real need for heating except at high altitudes, and liberal use of the abundant timbers available in the region. The UDesign architects approached the design of their new villa with tradition in mind, taking full advantage of their inside/outside nodifference architectural philosophy to create a relatively small super-luxury villa that owes as much to its location as it does to the classic UDesign architectural style. “The inspiration for the design came from the Bali look, which we all associate with the island: natural materials such as wood, stone and abundant water,” says Jason Harris, CEO and Creative Director of UDesign. “In a way it’s a smaller version of our Garden Villa, designed for a plot where the absence of good exterior views is more than made up for by the creation of our own views. We’re building our own little world made from natural materials, surrounded by lush vegetation. Privacy is a key element of the design, and although somewhat smaller in overall size than most of the villas we design, it makes for a total entity that looks and feels much bigger than it actually is.” The villa is on two floors, although the main sitting room area is high, reaching up to roof level. The design is minimalist, as we would expect from UDesign, but not stark in any way, as we also expect from UDesign. The idea is basically that one has a great view whether inside or out, whichever direction one looks, somewhat like an Orson Welles film where every frame has been carefully considered with the eye of an artist. The outside walls are not easy to identify, and where exactly the outside begins is not immediately obvious. Outside is inside, and vice versa, as it should be in this privileged climate.

The windows slide into the walls, and what we’re left with is plenty of open space that still preserves intimacy, with just the right amount of the rightsized furniture. “The feeling of open space and of living close to nature is everywhere in this villa, and that’s how they live in Bali,” says Jason. The colour is provided by nature itself, because there is not a room in the house from where the lush vegetation of Bali cannot be seen. It even overhangs one side of the pool, located on one corner of the plot as if carved out of the building itself, which surrounds it on two other sides. The covered terraces, complete with swing seat, sofas, loungers, television screen and barbeque and eating areas, provide shade, while a large white sculpture sits in the centre of a small garden at one end of the pool.

“It’s all about natural materials and texture, rather than pure colour,” Jason tells us. “Apart from the pistachio-coloured sofas and the vibrant colours of nature, we have mostly used stone and wood in a variety of textures to create visual interest. The wood is oak, and it’s been used all over the house in different ways. The grey oak, for example, is especially relaxing. And to maintain the relaxed feel of the house at all times, we have a fireplace that will be used to make people feel comfortable on special occasions, never used to heat the space, just for ambience.”

PRIVACY IS A KEY ELEMENT OF THE DESIGN reflective columns behind it. In effect, the staircase is a piece of abstract sculpture. The kitchen, Jason remarks, is also quite sculptural, and once again, it does not fit the traditional concept of a kitchen, although it certainly functions as such. Clever design has been used here to hide essential fittings, with the wine rack, to take one example, hidden behind the wood panelling. “This kitchen is more of an architectural detail,” says Jason, “with its lovely layers of panels and shapes. The black panel hides the oven. You press on it and the oven opens out. You press again and it closes. In fact, it looks as if there is not much kitchen there at all, but there is. As in the rest of the villa, we have used space to optimise space.”

Such a villa was designed for such a place, allowing its occupants to saunter from area to area rather than from room to room, and allowing the fresh air of the island into all interior spaces without sacrificing intimacy. The result is a very beautiful house that does full justice to a very beautiful place. While the limited edition LaFerrari of 2013 used its electric motor and KERS only as a performance booster, the SF90 is the first true Ferrari plug-in hybrid hypercar. This means its 7.9kW battery allows silent, emissions-free driving for a claimed 26km at speeds of up to 135km/h. Importantly for serious Ferrari fans annoyed by instantly sold-out invitation only limitededition models and silly grey market premiums, the SF90 is freely available to anyone who can pay their official Ferrari dealer the basic 518,750 euro asking price, plus whatever expensive extras from the options list that most buyers will add. Certainly most will tick the box for the interior carbon-fibre package as the cabin looks rather Spartan without it. All told, the SF90 ends up around double the price of an F8 Tributo, something you have to come to terms with as this seems an outrageous ask when you see these two sensational looking Ferrari models side-by-side. This is the price you pay for cutting edge technology.

The SF90’s near 1,000hp output certainly lifts it from the realm of mere supercar where the F8 Tributo lives, into the more rarefied air of the hypercar. Consider the big numbers. With 4WD traction the SF90 rockets to 0-100 km/h in 2.5 sec, with 200km/h passed in 6.7 sec on the way to its 338km/h Vmax. Meanwhile, the active aerodynamic elements that keep the car stable at high speed are already producing 390kg of downforce at 250km/h. The 4WD system is engaged from rest to 208km/h and uses one electric motor on each front wheel, and a third between the engine and gearbox. Once this speed is exceeded the computer directs all the battery power to the third motor, which then combines its output with the combustion engine to send nigh-on 1,000hp to the rear wheels! Electric motors and their batteries make hybrid cars substantially heavier than their combustion engine only counterparts, so all this extra hardware becomes dead weight once the battery is depleted.

As the electric package adds 250kg of extra mass to the SF90, the Ferrari engineers had to be very clever in clawing back some of this weight to improve efficiency. So for instance, they shaved 10kg from the eightspeed dual-clutch gearbox by deleting the reverse gear, handing that task over to the front electric motors. In parenthesis, the SF90 tips the scales at 1,600kg, some 165kg more than its F8 cousin. In hypercar terms the body and chassis construction of the SF90 is very conventional, and the ultra-light, ultrarigid carbon-fibre tub of the kind that forms the core of the Porsche 918 Spyder, McLaren P1 and Senna and all the Koenigsegg models is conspicuously missing here. Apart from the carbon-fibre rear bulkhead also found on the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracan, the SF90 uses an aluminium chassis that shares some common parts with the F8 Tributo, but ends up some 20 percent stiffer.

manifolds and turbochargers are new and bespoke. Significantly, the revised motor shaves a whopping 25kg off the weight of the 720hp F8 unit, and as it is placed 50mm lower in the chassis the centre of gravity and thus handling are improved. Output is 780hp at 7,500rpm, and with the e-motors engaged the total system output is a heady 1,000hp at 8,000rpm, underpinned by 800Nm of torque at 6,000rpm.

That in itself is significant as the SF90 is a technical tour de force that delivers a clear message on the way Ferrari design is moving into the future, with hybrid and perhaps eventually all-electric power on the near horizon. In that respect, this car is a landmark in the glorious history of the Italian sportscar marque founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1947. That said, apart from the expected raw speed, long-time Ferrari owners will have to recalibrate their sensory and some other expectations.

Silver is an unusual colour for a Ferrari, but this ‘technical’ hue of the factory test car I drove actually suits the SF90’s razor sharp profile.

on offer you then have to decide how to dial your brain into the driver aids best suited to your driving style of the moment, be that on the road or track. As someone who began driving supercars with 1960s and ‘70s Ferraris and Lamborghinis, all the way through to the Veyron, 918 Spyder and McLaren Senna amongst others, I find the ‘language’ the Ferrari designers have chosen for the SF90’s interface controls less than coherent. For starters there are too many formats for the major controls. We already noted that the Start /Stop button is now a touch sensitive control on the steering wheel and the eManettino is still an old-style knob. Meanwhile Auto, Manual and Reverse gear selection is now controlled by small polished metal levers on the centre console reminiscent of miniature aircraft throttle controls. The only saving grace is that Ferrari has standardised this layout with all their very latest models, the Roma sharing most of these same controls. With ever tightening noise regulations, especially in Europe, the process of starting a modern supercar has become a far less significant event, and is often now largely just the same as with a normal everyday car. With the previous generation of Ferraris like the 488 GTB, you pressed a big red button on the steering wheel for engine Start and Stop, so at least there was still some sense of occasion. Even that is now missing from the SF90 Stradale.

Back in the days when engines were fed by a brace of carburettors, this entailed turning the ignition key to the first position and hearing a ticking sound as the fuel pump send the engine’s life blood coursing along the lines from the tank. Then you pumped the accelerator a couple of times and held the throttle pedal halfway down before turning the key to the Start position to crank the engine. Your reward was a rapturous bark from the four exhaust pipes as sparks from the ignition system turned the air and fuel mixture into an aural symphony, the car gently rocking in response to the laws of physics. You also had to blip the throttle to keep the engine alive for the first few seconds after being awakened from its slumber. This ritual, for want of a better term, was part of a car enthusiasts’ idea of heaven. Over time, the march of progress brought fuel-injection and then fully-mapped ignition. No more cold start histrionics, just turn the key and ‘boom’ the engine fires up first time and idles smoothly.

The very latest generation of cars from Audi to Mercedes and Volkswagen all use touch screens to control a myriad of functions from the heating and airconditioning to the volume of the radio. Ferrari has caught this disease too, and the worst part of it is that the Start/Stop ‘button’ is now an invisible touch control below the steering wheel airbag, with ENGINE Start / Stop painted over it in white. At least the wheel still features the famous Manettino knob, eManettino in this application, that allows you to select the various possible driving modes from Electric only to Qualify mode and Traction Control Off.

The big 16-inch wide digital display and plethora of controls, some of which would look more at home in PlayStation, need time to orientate to. No more analogue dials here, just a big digital display. After you have deciphered the various menus

The move to place as much as possible on the steering wheel leaves it with less than perfect ergonomics. The telephone and cruise control touch pads on the left steering wheel spoke, and the view screen and seat cooling touch pads on the right spoke are too easily nudged while turning the steering wheel on a twisty road. Meanwhile, the angular plastic controls for the lights and wipers along with the steering wheel mounted Indicator buttons that ‘float’ above the steering wheel spokes and the alloy gear selector panel on the centre console make for a mish-mash of styles and textures that go from hard plastic to metal and lashings of carbon-fibre trim should you tick the box for that expensive option. This fragmented and somewhat incoherent aesthetic and tactile experience is not something I would expect in a car costing the thick end of half a million Euros. Nor is the level of cabin materials that is acceptable in the F8 Tributo worthy of a car costing double that. Frankly, the interior design and finish of a 200,000-euro Bentley puts it to shame! Exploring the soul of the SF90 means largely ignoring most of the bells and whistles in its cabin. The moment you start the engine and move off all is forgiven as the dynamic driving experience is dominated by one of the finest engines and gearboxes ever created. I would recommend that you just get out there and drive for a few

kilometres in each of the different modes selected by the eManettino knob to best get a feel for the different facets of this cars personality. From comfortable and silent around town in eDrive through Hybrid and Performance to the full-blooded racetrack Qualify mode, you can feel a real difference in the response of the drivetrain and chassis. Most enthusiasts will find the Performance mode to be the best compromise as this keeps the combustion motor running to charge the batteries, and keeps the car alert and ready to deliver its optimum performance without becoming edgy. Whether you are crawling along at walking speed in traffic or using the full performance on the open road the twin-turbo, flat-plane crankshaft V8 motor and its seven-speed paddle shift gearbox offer up a broad-shouldered and seamless double act. Super-smooth and free revving, the engine has a robust and inspiring soundtrack without becoming shouty, while the torque delivery is strong and progressive yet not as brutal as many supercars that are actually far less potent. Given its head on the open road the rate at which this car gathers speed is almost surreal, and the numbers reeling

out on the digital speedometer move so quickly they are hard to track when you are paying attention to the road, which you should be. This is why most serious drivers prefer analogue speedometers that deliver a rough idea of speed simply by the position of the needle on the dial rather than having to read and assimilate an actual number. Despite the big open spoke 20-inch alloy wheels shod with 255/35ZR20 and 315/30ZR20 ultra-low-profile rubber the SF90 rides surprisingly well. The secondary ride at low speeds is firm with short, sharp bumps nicely rounded off. As you go faster the suspension exhibits a masterful suppleness with iron-fisted body control. Roll in corners is so minimal that lateral g-forces are the overwhelming external input when pressing on in the bends. Feel and feedback from the electric power steering is well-judged. The frontend feels pointy without being nervous, and the rear follows the nose away from the straight ahead on cue, making the SF90 feel agile in a way that inspires driver confidence, crucial in a car with such towering performance.

A full field enjoyed an action-packed day of golf and banter during this month’s event at Alferini Golf Course. All players were welcomed back to La Sala for delicious food and lots of drinks after a tough 18 holes on the challenging layout. Tine from International Marbella also cooked up some of her famous sausage rolls for the golfers, and tested their knowledge with a sports quiz, won by the Pink Panthers at La Sala winning a round of cocktails! A prize giving and charity auction for the Elena Foundation followed, raising over 2000€ for this fantastic cause. Scores on this tough test were very impressive - with Kevin Fearnely placing third. Ben Mitchell was runner-up and Jan Sigvard Runo took first place with 46 points! We hope he enjoys his new handicap! The 2021 Global Talent Survey of more than 200,000 workers worldwide revealed nearly 9 in 10 (89%) expect some allowance for remote working within their careers post pandemic. Once everyone realised you can get just as much done without having to actually wear trousers Monday to Friday, we can’t be expected to want to go back. The carbon offset of reduced laundry loads combined with less commuting may even help the planet... Another poll of 4000 workers by Aviva revealed nearly 2/3 of employees are planning career changes as a result of Covid, with nearly 1 in 10 seeking a new career altogether. We’ve decided to present five of the strangest, freakiest, but nevertheless genuine jobs from around the world for those of you looking to forge a new path.

Ideally your parents wanted you to become a doctor or an architect. They’d have settled for accountant or teacher. Hell, they’d still have had you over at Christmas if you were a road sweeper or lorry driver, but THIS? Armpit sniffer??! “You SNIFF armpits for a living?!” they say, their incredulity palpable. “It’s important work” you tell them - “I help ensure deodorant manufacturers make effective prod...” “You SNIFF armpits for a living??!” they repeat, already mentally rewriting their will as their faces collapse in shame. “Someone has to...” you desperately retort, tears forming in your eyes as you watch them physically withdrawing from the table in the restaurant. “I helped them develop Lynx Africa” you plead to your dad as he hastily buttons his coat, “It’s a classic fragrance. You said so yourself dad”. “You sniff armpits” he mutters under his breath, his head shaking as he forcibly shepherds your mother away from you as if you were a rabid hound. “Dad?” you call after him. “M-m-mum??” They don’t look back. A waiter stares at you askance as an awkward hush falls over the other diners, punctuated only by disgusted whispers. You pick out the words “armpit” and “sniffer” as you grab your gloves and fumble out money for the bill. You run home and cry yourself to sleep. The next morning your rise sluggishly and head to work... You sniff armpits.

Bettina, our resident foodie, offers her insider knowledge on plant based cuisine and takes us on a culinary journey as she travels the world in search of gastronomic inspiration.

I love nothing more than spending hours prepping, marinating, cooking and just dreaming all day about a dish that I’ve spent time, love and effort creating. But sometimes I just really CBA. Food should excite you – it shouldn’t be a chore. And sometimes, less is more.

During last year we all got to experience the thrill of being at home and being able to spend more time in the kitchen but pair cooking 3 times a day with your own day job, and you are soon going to burnout, especially if you are trying to recreate Michelin Star quality food every day. Which is why I love minimalistic recipes. They are the key to whetting your appetite and falling back in love with food. Not only do they create more simple, basic dishes that save you time, effort (and washing up) but there are less opportunities to fail, (and having to start again) and these fuss-free dishes can really help you hone down on some basic cooking techniques, helping you be quicker in the kitchen for dishes to come. But they are also really great at showcasing a specific ingredient and opening it up to your tastebuds, especially if you are purchasing local and seasonal ingredients that you may not have tried before or want to showcase at their best.

By taking one ingredient and highlighting it in a dish with just a few additional ingredients and you can really make something spectacular. A fresh tomato salad with a good glug of olive-oil and a pinch of sea salt is truly magical. The goal here is to make the veggie a hero and only adding the necessary ingredients to help it flourish and letting its flavours shine from within. Some of my favourite dishes are minimalistic; they don’t have to be boring or basic – you just have to cook smart. Roasting ingredients can help bring out their sweetness as they basically cook themselves; they need less attention than pan-frying or something that needs constant stirring. On the other-hand, a quick pan-fry is a great way to get a dish from pan to plate in a few minutes flat – depending on the dish. It’s all about playing to your strengths and the time constraints or effort levels you have left.

You can whizz up a quick pesto to drizzle over salads, or roasted veggies and really take them to the next level in a few second’s flat. The same with dressings – don’t underestimate the power of a good quality dressing, it can take your limp looking salads to a whole new level with nothing more than just a few simple ingredients: olive oil, salt, mustard and an acidic source – lemon juice or white wine vinegar do well. Or go for a more Asian influence with fresh herbs, sesame and soy. Just blitz and drizzle. And don’t forget about baking either, they don’t all have to be as complicated as feeding a sourdough starter each day. You can whip up simple desserts in one-bowl and let sit and set all day, such as mousse’s, jellies or truffles. Breads, cakes and bakes are the same too – opt for a one bowl or one pan recipe and let the oven or fridge do all the magic. Utilise the equipment you have and when thinking about a mid-week or minimalistic dish, remove one or two ingredients from the final recipe, your tastebuds won’t miss them, but your body, mind and soul will thank you for the extra time and energy.

A Journey through Flavour By Isabella Buchanan

rriving at Arbonauta, a restaurant creating quite the foodie buzz at Zagaleta Golf Course, I start to wonder if I have been invited to review one of the most visually appealing restaurants in Spain. The landscape exceeds all prior expectations and if the food is anything like the views, this is going to be exquisite. “A journey through flavour” is one of their quotes and it couldn’t be more accurate. The large selection of healthy dishes makes it a perfect spot to refuel after a day of golf, or even if you’re not playing, no excuse is needed to indulge (food is served throughout the day). The menu is almost guaranteed to tantalise all, from salads to a Wagyu burger. Or oysters to a vegetable curry, I suggest you bring friends so that you can all share the entire menu. For starters I opted for the “Three Assorted Skewers” which consisted of teriyaki chicken, lamb kofta and crispy squid. Yes, I was won over by the multiple selection in one course and I wasn’t disappointed. The meat was cooked precisely and the pairing was perfect. The crispy squid was true to its name and didn’t offer an ounce of chewy rubber, something a number restaurants struggle to do. The main course selection is when I started to get very excited. Do I stick

to meat or venture to the oceans for some seafood? I chose the latter and delved into a dish of “Tuna Tartare from Almadraba”. It was accompanied with guacamole, wakame and crisp bread… YUM! The combination was sublime and the presentation was very easy on the eyes. Tartare can be slightly risky, a fishy fish is not pleasant, but the slight aroma

of tuna paired with the guacamole was simply divine. Almadraba is a Spanish word of Arabic origin, a technique for trapping and catching Atlantic bluefin tuna, making for a perfect catch. Dessert wasn’t negotiable after the incredible standards of the starter and main course, I had to discover if I could

get a hole in one (golf jokes are not my forte). But my sweet tooth was stuck between a tiramisu mille-feuille and an apple tarte tatin. After asking my waiter for their advice, (the staff go above and beyond, definitely ask for their input as they are more than happy to help) I’m lured to the caffeine side and order the tiramisu. I have arrived in chocolate paradise. With the chocolate sponge and chocolate cream, my chocolate dreams have been answered. But don’t assume that this will be a sweet overload, it is simply perfect. Making a wrong decision with the menu seems impossible, because I am certain it is.

And that is the desire of the expert, know-how chef and the entire team at the restaurant.
