Justin By Christie Holland
B
orn in 1994 in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, Justin was raised by a single mother and learnt to play the drums, piano, guitar and trumpet in his early years. In 2007 he took part in a local singing competition earning second place. His mother posted a video of his performance on YouTube for his friends and family who were unable to attend. This became a regular occurrence with additional uploads often accompanied by acoustic guitar which soon attracted additional attention. Scott ‘Scooter’ Braun, a music producer and talent agent spotted Bieber’s posts and invited him to Atlanta to record a demo. While there, Bieber ran into singer, Usher and arranged a meeting with him. Impressed by Bieber’s natural confidence and vocal talent, Usher helped sign him to a recording contract in late 2008. The following year Bieber released his first single, the light-hearted and cheerful love song One Time, and six months later he followed this with a seven-track EP My World, comprising of easy-listening R&Binfluenced pop. By this time his following had dramatically grown as he became the heartthrob for millions of young girls globally. The full-length album My World 2.0 arrived in 2010 which debuted at number one on the Billboard album chart. The lead single Baby featuring a guest appearance from rapper Ludacris became an instant success. The official video also became the first to amass more than 500 million views on YouTube. My Worlds Acoustic followed featuring stripped-back versions of his songs along with an autobiographical book, Justin Bieber: First Step 2 Forever: My Story and a documentary film sprinkled with 3D concert footage, Justin Bieber:

Never Say Never. Continuing his success Bieber maintained his visibility with the album Never Say Never: The Remixes in 2011 a companion to the film and the Christmas album Under the Mistletoe both of which hit number one in the US and Canada. As Bieber matured his style also evolved and a more established sound came with hit single, Boyfriend and further albums Believe and Believe Acoustic. Riding the success of its lead single ‘Boyfriend’, the album sold over 3 million copies worldwide. It became Platinum certified in US, Canada and Australia, while achieving Gold status in England. In 2013, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) honoured him with a Diamond award to recognise his single, Baby, as the highest certified digital song of all time. His fourth album ‘Purpose’, led by the single ‘What Do You Mean?’ was released on August 28, 2015. The song went on to be his biggest hit to date, bettering 2012’s Boyfriend. It debuted at No.1 on Hot 100 becoming the 23rd song to do so in history and crushed Spotify’s record which was set by One Direction only a few weeks prior. The second single of the album, Sorry was another roaring success followed by Love Yourself making Justin the first male artist in almost a decade to have three No.1 songs from an album since Justin Timberlake in 2006. The album eventually was announced as the fourth best-selling album of the year with 3.1 million copies sold. In addition to that, it was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album at the 59th Grammy Awards.
Justin Bieber started dating Selena Gomez in December 2010 and their relationship became a media sensation. After an on-and-off relationship for a couple of years, they separated in November 2012.
“Music is something I can’t not do. It’s like a part of me. I’m gonna keep making music as long as I humanly can.”
While enjoying his success in his teen years, he began getting involved in a number of troubles and faced legal issues multiple times, being accused of reckless driving in 2012 and vandalism in 2013. He was finally arrested on January 23, 2014, in Miami Beach, Florida, for driving under the influence Following his release on bond, he got arrested again in September 2014 for dangerous driving. Singles Let Me Love You and Cold Water performed well on the charts followed by Justin’s collaboration with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee for the remix of the song ‘Despacito’. The song was nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Dup/Group Performance and the Grammy Awards and several awards at the Billboard Latin Music Awards. In addition to career success, 2018 also saw Justin’s personal life soar as he got engaged to Hailey Baldwin. The couple tied the knot later that year.
To enjoy newlywed life, Justin went on a hiatus to focus on his mental health. In 2019 he announced he was working on his fifth studio album before making a comeback through his Ed Sheeran collaboration, I Don’t Care.
New album Yummy arrived in January 2020 and a tour was announced in its support. However, sadly Justin had to cancel his upcoming concerts for 2022 and take a break from performing after suffering from Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a rare viral conditional that caused paralysis in his face. Sharing his diagnosis with his fans Justin revealed, “Obviously, as you can probably see from my face, I have this syndrome called Ramsay Hunt syndrome and it is from this virus that attacks the nerve in my ear, my facial nerves, and has caused my face to have paralysis,” the star explained. The condition has left Bieber unable to blink or smile on the affected side of his face. However, Bieber has shown great optimism for his recovery and hopes to be back touring and on stage in no time.

MISS ALDRIDGE REGRETS by Louise Hare
Set in London in 1936, Lena Aldridge wonders if life has passed her by. The dazzling theatre career she hoped for hasn’t worked out. Instead, she’s stuck singing in a sticky-floored basement club in Soho, and her married lover has just left her. She’s feeling utterly hopeless until a stranger offers her the chance of a lifetime: a starring role on Broadway and a first-class ticket on the Queen Mary bound for New York. After a murder at the club, the timing couldn’t be better, and Lena jumps at the chance to escape England. But death follows her onboard when an obscenely wealthy family draws her into their fold just as one among them is killed in a chillingly familiar way. As Lena navigates the strange family dynamic, she realizes that her greatest performance won’t be for an audience, but for her life.

SWITCHBOARD SOLDIERS by Jennifer Chiaverini
In June 1917, General John Pershing arrived in France to establish American forces in Europe. He immediately found himself unable to communicate with troops in the field. Pershing needed operators who could swiftly and accurately connect multiple calls, speak fluent French and English, remain steady under fire, and be utterly discreet, since the calls often conveyed classified information. At the time, nearly all well-trained American telephone operators were women but women were not permitted to enlist, or even to vote in most states. Nevertheless, the U.S. Army Signal Corps promptly began recruiting them. More than 7,600 women responded, and they were among the first women sworn into the U.S. Army under the Articles of War. The risk of death was real, the women worked as bombs fell around them, as was the threat of the deadly Spanish Flu. Not all the telephone operators would survive. The women of the U.S. Army Signal Corps served with honour and played an essential role in achieving the Allied victory. Their story has never been the focus of a novel… until now.

MABEL – About Last Night
About Last Night is an intense and hyperreal journey from the anticipated beginnings to the messy end of the best night out that never was. Each track follows the theme of getting ready to go out; feeling invincible; clocking an ex; crying in the bathroom; stumbling home and transforming the normality into the magical. Mabel once again switches up her effortless way of modern pop influenced by the euphoria of noughties club-culture with deeper themes of expression and inclusion as gained from obsessively re-watching “Paris Is Burning”, “Pose” and “Drag Race” during lockdown.
NOAH CYRUS – The Hardest Part
Noah Cyrus has announced her debut album, ‘The Hardest Part’. The 22-year-old singer - who is the younger sibling of 29-year-old pop icon Miley Cyrus has shared the lead single from her first full-length release, ‘I Burned LA Down’, a tale of heartbreak, and a moving music video. The Hardest Part is set to follow April 2021’s collaborative EP ‘People Don’t Change’ with P.J. Harding. Noah has been open about her battle with depression and previously admitted she feared she would die young after she went through such a tough patch with her mental health. Light years beyond anything she’s released previously, this new chapter will undoubtedly place Noah Cyrus firmly in the upper echelon of contemporary singer-songwriters.

Justin Bieber has cancelled the remainder of his U.S. Justice Tour shows following his Ramsay Hunt syndrome diagnosis that left half of his face paralyzed. Hailey Bieber, Justin’s wife, has reportedly been his biggest supporter through the medical crisis. “Hailey has been at Justin’s side day in and day out, as always,” a source shared. “He is definitely leaning on her as his number one supporter and feels very comforted by her. He feels like with her support, he can conquer this and get back to his normal self, everyday life, work, touring and being healthy and happy. Hailey is certainly helping Justin stay positive and confident and they have high hopes for getting his health back on track.”
THE TRUTH Jennifer Lopez reveals her mother used to beat her. The singer and actress spoke candidly about her complicated relationship with her mother, Guadalupe Rodriguez, sharing that her mum got into physical bouts with herself and her sisters, Leslie and Lynda. Speaking in her Halftime documentary, Jennifer said: ‘She did what she had to do to survive, and it made her strong, but it also made her tough. She beat the s**t out of us.’ She added: ‘I was surrounded by a lot of strong women. My mom is a super complicated woman, and she carries a lot of baggage, she wanted us to be independent and never have to rely on a man.’ Jennifer and her mother have since resolved their relationship and have teamed up on numerous projects together.
BIG YEAR AHEAD Tennis legend, Rafael Nadal has confirmed that he and his wife Mery Perelló are expecting. The couple tied the knot in October 2019 after dating for 14 years and are now set to welcome their first child. FINALLY FREE British Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes has come out as gay at the age of 52. The double gold medal winner shared that she first realised she was gay as a 17-year-old soldier after a female colleague kissed her. Breaking a 34-year silence she has now told the world the truth. She continued to reveal she has lived a ‘secret life’ for decades and ‘there has been a lot of dark times where I wished I could scream that I am gay – but I couldn’t.’ Bottling things up left her suicidal and she struggled with years of self-harm but a frightening brush with Covid made her realise she needed, and wanted, to show the world her true self.
PUT A RING ON IT Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are engaged after almost six years together and 10 months after welcoming their baby boy, Axel. During a romantic getaway, Alex proposed to the popstar at sunset. Perrie shared the exciting news on Instagram revealing; ‘Last night the love of my life got down on one knee and I said… YES!” Congratulations to the happy couple!

Here Come the
BIOPICS By Rachel Carr
We have an innate fascination with other people’s lives, especially those who have reached icon status. This year the big and small screens will expose the life stories of some of the 20th century’s most famous faces and the charisma surrounding them.
BLONDE (Marilyn Monroe) ELVIS Starring: Austin Butler, Tom Hanks Cinema release: 24th June Directed by Baz Luhrmann, Elvis promises to show us the real Elvis Aaron Presley, from teen singer to the pelvisswinging idol that we are all familiar with. Tom Hanks appears as Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker, and the screenplay doesn’t forget army Elvis or actor Elvis. It will be one helluva rhinestone-covered ride at 2 hrs 39 minutes long, but at least we know we won’t be cheated out of all the bits juicer than one of Elvis’ burgers, as it covers his career from Memphis to Las Vegas. It’s time to put on your best blue suede shoes and head to the cinema - long live the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll!
42
Starring: Ana de Armas, Adrien Brody Netflix release: 23rd September Rather than a definitive account of Norma Jean’s life, Andrew Dominik’s adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ novel is seen through the prism of the misogynistic and toxic Hollywood culture of celebrities in the 50s and 60s. It is a tragic tale of how childhood trauma shaped an adult destined to be perceived as a public image instead of a person possessing very human qualities. It holds a mirror up to American life, following how Norma Jean became Marilyn Monroe. It shows studios and people, including president JFK, took advantage of a vulnerable young woman, right through to her demise at the age of 36 in 1962. Oh, it also has a Nick Cave soundtrack.
PISTOL (Sex Pistols) Starring: Toby Wallace, Thomas Brody-Sangster, Maisie Williams Disney Plus release: Now! Danny Boyle, yes, he of Trainspotting fame, directed the miniseries about the 70s punk rock band, based on the founder of the Sex Pistols, Steve Jones’ autobiography Lonely Boy. His style of the gritty realism of 1970s Britain captures the urban decay of London and the North perfectly. It depicts how the antiestablishment sub-culture quickly becomes mainstream, as punk took hold in the towns and cities of Britain. The backlash the band experienced after their appearance on the Bill Grundy show and the constant infighting ensures that there is enough conflict and comical dialogue to keep you interested in this fast-paced drama. The cast is exceptional, as Anson Boon, cast as Johnny Rotten, channels his mannerisms, acerbic wit and crazy eyes enough to blur reality between him and the real Rotten. The young cast is mesmerising as angry and disenfranchised lost souls who find solace and kinship in Vivienne Westwood’s shop, SEX, on the King’s Road, in which she and her partner Malcolm McLaren are a conduit for the chaos that ensues.
I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY (Whitney Houston)
Starring: Naomi Ackie, Stanley Tucci Cinema release: 21st December As a celebration of Whitney Houston’s life and music, I Wanna Dance with Somebody is also emotional and heart-breaking as we are reminded of Whitney’s amazing vocal range and the rise to superstardom which she experienced in the 80s and 90s, before her involvement with Bobby Brown. The film is an authorised biography as Whitney’s manager music and movie mogul, Clive Davis, approved and signed off on the project. The film is a joyous depiction of one of the greatest female singers of all time, and it will remind us of how legendary she was before her shocking death in 2012. To see Whitney resurrected on the big screen will be a nostalgic musical trip, just in time for Christmas.
Honorable Mentions
The as-yet-untitled Bee Gees biopic will be hitting cinemas at some point. It is in the early stages so not much is known about it yet, including who will be cast as the Gibb brothers and whether it will cover their disco heyday or their whole lives. Bob Marley, whose life was tragically cut short in 1981, aged 36, will be getting the silver screen treatment too; this one we know a bit more about. Kingsley Ben-Adir, a rising star of film and theatre, will play the king of
Jamaican reggae music. Shooting starts in the autumn, focusing on 70s London, where Bob recorded his album Exodus. Madonna is co-writing and directing her own life story this year, with Julia Garner from Ozark cast as the queen of pop. The biopic hasn’t got a release date or a title yet, although the script was written last year, it is one to look forward to. No doubt there will be more to come, Cher stated on Twitter that she has one in the works, so watch this space… Viva la rock (and pop and reggae).

Brands who consistently create visual content find themselves ahead of the curve. In addition to gorgeous branding and imagery, followers look to interactive experiences including drink recipes, Q&A’s and collaborations.

The Tennessee Whiskey doesn’t follow a calendar, it is ready when the tasters say and judged by the look, aroma and of course taste. That’s the way Jack Daniel himself did it over a century ago and how it is still done today. Jack Daniel’s feed epitomises the brand’s spirit; the pictures are stylised and use a mixture of typography and lifestyle pics to showcase the brands essence. The posts showcase a true Jack Daniels representation with a mixture of pictures and videos boasting a feel-good American style to ensure their content is relatable to their audience.

By Ian Greenland
his morning my six year old slapped me on the back whilst I was picking his Lego off the floor – right between the shoulders and not exactly gently (when are six year old boys ever gentle?...) Shocked and confused for a split second, turning to see his grinning face I was instantly transported back to the early noughties when my flatmate Lara delighted in screaming “HIGH-5!!” and whacking me in the same spot most mornings as I staggered sleepily to the toilet or coffee cupboard. I was asking for it of course, the day I got the palm of a hand crudely tattoo’d on my reverse, but its positioning, hidden from me but for two mirrors, plus the fact it’s my only bit of ink mean I forget I even have it for long spells – just as well, because the Thai fella who etched it in the traditional bamboo style bodged it hard – like Popeye’s forearms, one of the fingers actually gets wider towards
the end!!? - again, probably my fault since I was feeding him drink and drugs at a full moon party until about three hours before I went under the needle. Anyway, we all make stupid decisions when we’re young and at least mine takes two carefully positioned mirrors or a spontaneously aggressive act of trolling to be reminded of. I can only hope the onset of middle age brings lustrous back hair to hide my shame. Nobody wants to High-5 a hairy palm. Turns out people may have been regretting ink for some 7000 years, with the earliest evidence of tattoo art dating back to 5000 BCE in the form of decorated clay figures found in a Japanese tomb. The oldest known inked human is “Otzi the Iceman” (Total dude!!) Discovered mummified in a glacier in the Oatzal Alps between Austria and Italy, the 5300 year old Bronzeage hipster was rocking a Heinztastic 57 tatts!? With many located on acupuncture points, scientists speculate his tattoos were a a type of early acupuncture treatment for the symptoms of ailments such as arthritis. Chemical analysis revealed the pigmentation was achieved using soot, possibly administered with thorns or similar. Presumably the medical notion of a “second opinion” hadn’t yet been established back when Otzi was convinced jamming the contents of a fireplace into him with a sharp bush would make him feel better. Ancient tattooing was most commonly practiced amongst the Austronesian people of at least 1500 years BCE, adorning their whole bodies and faces using a traditional haft and mallet technique. Explorer Captain James Cook is credited as introducing the word “tattoo” to the
48
English language in 1769 upon returning from the Tahitian and Polynesian islands where the art was widely practised. Across cultures and millennia, tattooing has occurred for many reasons, including clan recognition, religious ceremony and rite of passage. Early Greeks adopted tattooing from the Persians a thousand odd years back, using it to mark slaves and criminals. The Romans then copied this practise from the Greeks, cementing a perceived link between tattoos and barbarism which would persist right up until 1998 when my exasperated mum told a frustratingly persistent 16 year old me that “only rough people get tattoos”. I finally proved her wrong ten years later – turns out middle class, intoxicated idiots do too. High-5 to / on me!! In fact, everyone and their mum (just not my mum) seems to have jumped on the ink-wagon, tattoos having steadily increased in popularity since the 70s when sports personalities and celebrities began to proudly display their body art. Huge stars such as Cher, Janis Joplin and Peter Fonda helped reshape the stigma towards more positive notions of empowerment and self expression, whilst activism by the tattoo artists themselves in the 60s and 70s (activism’s undoubted golden age!) saw the practise re-legalized and
athletes and models to idolise, we also have “influencers”.... and wannabe influencers.
professionally and culturally reimagined after the nadir of the preceding decades. The Nazi’s callous, forced use of tattoos in WW2 compounded existing stigma whilst the highly medicalized, puritanical US of the 1950s banned the practise outright in several cities and states. So much for “Happy days”.... Surely the Fonz was rocking ink??! It’s since the beginning of the 21st Century that the art form has skyrocketed in popularity, helped in no small part by the rise of (...you guessed it...) social media. These days we don’t just have famous actors and singers,
It used to be you chose from a book in the tattoo shop, drew or commissioned your own design or tore a page from a glossy magazine, but with the meteoric rise of the selfie, vlogging, Insta and TikTok, there’s never been an easier time for the youth to get a good look at someone else’s expression of individuality... and then rip it off. We’re saturated online with uber-shared inspiration from both the inked and the inkers, many of them virtual celebrities in their own right. Whilst 2005 first saw the wildly popular TV show Miami Ink draw back the curtain on the world of tattooing, social media hasn’t dropped the gauntlet since. In the era of the hashtag, trends are easily propagated and actively quantifiable, be they in fashion, music, opinion or body art. Statistics show some 40% of millennials have gone under the needle and those guys are never off their phones. According to Inked magazine, the tattoo trends we’ll see more of in 2022 are lightning bolts, holographic, psychedelic, “modern tribal”, “delicate ornamental” and “metallic micro”... strangely no mention of “Popeye finger” but only because I could never get a good photo of my own back.

Moments of crisis are also opportunities for change that allow you (or force you) to make reflections that you would not otherwise consider. In Interior Design there is a trend, increasingly popular, focused on the design of environments that induce calm: spaces freed from superfluous decorations that avoid
contemplation of the space itself. The search for simplicity and well-being makes us want to live in less cluttered environments that invite a simpler life. In our studio we work in interiors where the value and richness are found in the authenticity and beauty of the materials: stone floors, linen

Had the V6 bi-turbo combustion engine been online there would undoubtedly have been swivelled of heads and pointing, but the group remained blissfully unaware that a space-age machine had just driven past. The counterpoint in another village was the young man who eyeballed the car enthusiastically. I wonder how long it took him to realise that the customary ferocious supercar soundtrack was missing? People do not know quite what to expect when you tell them that the McLaren Artura is a hybrid supercar. Even a decade on from the debut of the LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and Porsche 918 Spyder the genre is not exactly commonplace even in this fast approaching EV age. So what does that even mean in terms of the big numbers that interest car enthusiasts? Good packaging and low emissions were top of the list in the Artura design brief, and it was clear that McLaren would have to increase efficiency and lower the CO2 emissions of its new PHEV (PlugIn Hybrid EV) supercar quite drastically without compromising power or driver engagement. Downsizing from a 4.0 litre V8 to a 3.0 litre V6 and adding an E-motor was a start. Most V6 engines have a 90-degree included angle, which makes total sense as major manufacturers like Mercedes offer a V6 as part of an engine family that uses similar components for its V8 and even V12 motors. McLaren had no such constraints here, and the 120-degree included angle design delivers the two key advantages of allowing both turbochargers to be placed within the Vee, further helping to lower the centre of gravity of the power unit. At 160kg, the V6 is 50kg lighter than its V8 cousin, and sits an advantageous 40mm lower in the car.

TORQUE TALK
McLaren’s all-new M630 2,993cc twinturbo V6 motor coupled to an Axial Flux E-motor results in 585hp (200hp/litre) and 95hp, with 531 and 225 Nm of torque respectively. The combined power units produce an impressive 680hp at 7,500rpm, underpinned by 720Nm of torque at 2,250rpm, delivered to the rear wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. As the E-motor is used for Reverse as well the mechanical gear cluster is commensurately shorter, further contributing to the compact drivetrain package. The car always starts in E-mode as the default setting unless the charge is so low that the combustion motor is required.
The V6 has a unique sonic signature that is actually hard to describe in words as the unorthodox firing pulses of the 120-degree included angle forces you to recalibrate everything you thought you knew about V6 soundtracks. Most people’s first experience of this will probably be via a YouTube video! Low weight is a massive contributor to efficiency, and McLaren’s expertise in lightweight technologies has allowed them to pursue the Hybrid drivetrain path with little compromise in vehicle weight. The 1,395kg dry weight and 1,498kg with fluids and a 90% full fuel tank give the Artura has an impressive power-to-weight ratio. Aided by its eight close ratio gears and the extra traction of the E-differential it rockets to 100km/h in just 3.0 sec, passing 200km/h in 8.3 sec and 300km/h in 21.5 sec. Top speed is electronically limited to 330km/h, or 205mph in old money. Thanks to the EV mode the CO2 emissions are just 104g/km, with a potential combined fuel economy of 61.5mpg or 4.6 l/100km. The relatively low weight also helps braking performance, and the 390mm front and 380mm rear vented carbon-ceramic discs with six-pot and four-pot forged alloy callipers respectively, haul the car to a stop from 100km/h in just 31m, and from double that speed in 126m. McLaren stands out in the supercar world for its use of carbon-fibre centre tubs across the range. The clear advantages of a carbon-fibre tub

with high torsional stiffness to which a suspension system with superior elasto-kinematics and a wider performance bandwidth is attached cannot be overstated. The Artura benefits from an all-new carbon-fibre central tub design and this is wrapped in exterior body panels made from Superformed aluminium, a process that allows the production of larger, seamless panels of consistent thickness and greater strength. The all-new MCLA carbon-fibre monocoque is made at McLaren’s MCTC facility near Sheffield. Back at McLaren HQ in Woking the tub is mated to aluminium front and rear frames and chassis structures that create a modular crash absorbing system easily replaced after a minor accident. The battery safety cell is in the rear. The fact that McLaren has milked this construction philosophy to the hilt, even incorporating the sub-woofers of the B&W audio system into the front of the Artura’s carbon-fibre tub, speaks volumes for their walking the walk as a motorsport technology driven company. The front suspension is a development of the system used in the 600LT, but the rear multi-link suspension is all new, 10% lighter and with a reduced centre of gravity compared to the previous double-wishbone system. This is matched to McLaren’s adaptive dampers and a front-lift function that works off the same circuit as the hydraulic power steering.

The benefits are felt at both ends of the speed spectrum, and on the recently resurfaced 26 corner, 5.4 km long Ascari Circuit near Ronda in Southern Spain it quickly became apparent that the bespoke 235/35R19 and 295/35R20 Pirelli PZero Corsa tyres fitted with the revolutionary Pirelli Cyber Tyre interactive information system help to endow the Artura with copious levels of mechanical grip and progressive limit handling.
second for the best balance between preserving momentum and not overwhelming available grip.
Mounted on 9.0J x 19-inch and 11.0J x 20-inch forged alloy wheels these tyres deliver a level of front-end grip beyond what I was expecting. Normally if you run slightly wide on turn-in to a tight bend and then try to add more steering the front end will wash out in understeer. However, you can lean on the front of the Artura like the 600LT. Increasing the steering lock slightly simply tightens the line, bringing the nose towards the apex.
The nose points very directly with great feel from the finessed hydraulic steering, while the new multi-link rear end with its greater toe stiffness is dialled in to follow its bidding in a perfect Torville and Dean dance act.
The two corners at Ascari where this is most apparent are Oulton and Gachot, slow and tight left and right handers respectively. Relatively slow they might be, but the copious torque boost from the E-motor means they are best taken in third gear rather than

When you are carrying considerable speed through the sequence that links Bathurst, The Kink and the fast sweeping late apex Mike Greenhalgh you really appreciate the way the front and rear suspension work together perfectly as lateral acceleration builds with velocity.
All the way through this third gear sequence you sense the supplementary thrust from the E-motor pushing the big rear tyre contact patches to the point where you can detect the E-differential subtly working away in the background right on the limit of mechanical grip. Exiting Mike Greenhalgh with a whiff of power oversteer, you straighten the steering wheel and totally commit down the short straight.

Snatch fourth with the right paddle shifter before cresting the brow, and in an instant you are into the braking threshold of one of the three sections of this track that really work the carbon-ceramic anchors hard. Then you drop to third with the left-hand paddle as you transition from hard braking into trail braking, aiming the nose towards the apex of the tight lefthand Gachot bend that leads onto the back straight. In Track mode you can tweak the ECS Dynamic mode through 15 levels to vary the amount of slip while still maintaining the ESC safety net in extremis. Thus an experienced driver can have fun on a trackday within the boundaries of the immutable laws of physics. The ESC system can also be totally switched off. Brundle, the first kink on the back straight, is taken flat in fourth in a road car of up to 200hp. Beyond that power level and a confidence lift is required. However, the Artura’s voracious appetite for accumulating speed means that you arrive at Brundle needing a serious stab at the brakes before you apply steering angle to soar over the right-hand kerb. After Brundle you extend the car in fourth and drop into fifth briefly before dialling in a few degrees of steering to take the second, more open right-hand kink flat out. Normally there is a time gap of about three seconds between the kink and the braking threshold for Sebring, the right hander at the end of the straight. But in the Artura I hardly found time to take a breath before having to really stand on the brakes and drop two ratios while lining up for the trail braking entry into Sebring. The well of electrified torque is so seamlessly added to the mix, so intrinsically part of the Artura’s smooth power delivery all the way to the red line, that you end up going much faster than you think. Its raw ability to build speed and the ease with which it is handled by the exquisite chassis definitely requires some recalibration of your senses, and indeed your reference points on a track that you know well.
hard-to-assimilate graphics that plague the displays of Italian rivals. The Power rocker control on the right side of the binnacle allows the driver to toggle between EV, Comfort, Sport and Track modes with a Manual button that locks the gearbox in the chosen ratio. The equivalent Handling rocker on the left controls the suspension modes and ESC off. Three USB ports are situated in the central storage compartment under the leather-wrapped central armrest. Apart from a phone charging power point McLaren has seen fit to install both a legacy USB-A as well as a USB-C plug-ins. As I view the more fragile USB-C connection as a liability in a car my reaction to that is “Hallelujah!” Good ride quality, whether with active or conventional suspension systems has always been a McLaren strength and that has not changed with the Artura. What is also impressive is the lack of road and tyre noise conferred by the new Pirelli tyres with special sound deadening material inside. The 570GT of 2017 was the first McLaren to use this sound deadening technology, and it is a great bonus if you use the car for long trips since excessive road and tyre noise is stressful over time. That low level of road noise allows you to better appreciate the optional 4,780-euro Bowers & Wilkins high-end audio system that features 12 speakers powered by a 1,280-watt amplifier. This amplifier includes QuantumLogic Surround technology to accurately identify and redistribute audio streams. Dynamic EQ processing allows a more precise adjustment of external sounds while Clari-Fi technology provides real-time restoration of low-quality audio signals. This is the first time Apple CarPlay and Android capability is standard in a McLaren.
The counterpoint is a road car with clearly thought out driver and passenger ergonomics. The cabin of the Artura is McLaren’s best yet, and offers a choice of Comfort and Clubsport seats. My road-only test car had the former while the track-only car at Ascari had the latter, which save 12kg across the pair. The amount of effort that they have put into designing this patented Clubsport version results in a seat that potentially fits a far broader range of drivers. Less complex than before in terms of buttons thanks to a clever rationalisation process, control operation is straightforward and user friendly. Importantly, the graphics and typeface used on the instrument pack and infotainment system are crisp and easy to read and bereft of any of the coloured flashing lights and sometimes

battery charged by the former. McLaren believe in pure feedback from the controls so there is no electric steering or brake regeneration. By the same token the design brief called for maximum charging of the battery so that it would be available for use throughout an intensive track day. The test drivers were able to do 10 laps of Nardo, which is over 60 km with no battery degradation. We started our two sessions at Ascari with a 92% charge showing and returned to the pits with the gauge reading 99% after each, which proved their point.
The speaker system uses B&W’s patented Continuum cones, which they claim has better damping and a better response than Kevlar. A nod to the fact that B&W worked closely with McLaren from day one is shown by the incorporation of the two subwoofers into the front of the carbon monocoque chassis. This guarantees extremely stable physical placement along with lack of rattles as can happen with more conventional placement. The result is a dynamic bass performance that underpins the open mid-range and soaring highs. Using familiar tracks via USB-A we found the system to be dynamic and able to resolve detail within a convincing soundstage. Importantly the tonal balance is very neutral so it does not favour one kind of music over another. Our test tracks covered everything from Jazz to Opera, and we enjoyed listening to many familiar tracks on this system, which is what counts the most in the end. Mid-engine cars are not known for great over-shoulder visibility, but McLaren has learned a lot from working very effectively on this very important practical aspect for the 720S Spider. Thus the view past the Artura’s aerodynamically shaped flying buttresses is good when manoeuvring at low
106
speeds, and is further enhanced by the wide-angle reversing camera. Its image in the instrument panel is supported by a computer-generated bird’s eye view of the car and its surroundings on the central infotainment screen. Those flying buttresses are part of an aerodynamic system that encourages negative lift while channelling cooling air to the engine lid grille. The system is so effective that the chimney effect created on the move helps to reduce the temperatures in the hot-Vee of the motor from 900-degrees C to just 240-degrees C! It is hard to believe that it is almost exactly a decade since the McLaren P1 broke cover using partial electrification to boost the power of its internal combustion engine. The lessons learned in the interim have allowed McLaren to take the electric power boost technology to the next level as well as providing 31 km (19 miles) worth of real world EV only driving range. The car always starts in E-Mode, and can be driven at up to 130km/h on pure electric power. The combustion motor and E-motor are designed in such a way that the
The Artura is not the new entry-level McLaren as some pundits assumed after the 540C/570S range was retired. Au contraire, the GT now occupies that role with the Artura sharing the Supercar category with the 720S and the Ultimate series retaining its flagship position. In performance terms the loss of two cylinders has not compromised the new Artura one iota. If anything the substantial torque contribution of the E-motor adds a whole new dimension to its raw speed, flexibility and fuel economy.

PYRAMID SCHEME By Ian Greenland
A journal published in Nature in late May of this year details how advanced lazer mapping technology has revealed to researchers the location of several town-like civilizations buried by dense Amazonian vegetation. Amongst the structures (figuratively) uncovered by the lazer reflecting process known as LiDAR are large platforms, defensive banks, canals, reservoirs and even conical pyramids stretching to 22 metres in height.
Excavation of large mounds in the Bolivian lowlands by archaeologist Heiko Prümers and his team which began in 1999 had already revealed structures, graves, artefacts and offerings, signs of a society with a social hierarchy far more complex than anyone had previously imagined. The region had up til then been thought unable to sustain complex ancient societies. Prümers had confounded many of his contemporaries by concentrating his research efforts in this, the Llanos de Mojos (Mojos plains) area of the Bolivian lowlands, but his discoveries merited further investigation using the helicoptermounted LiDAR system and the recently published results have stunned the scientific community. The incredible revelation of a total of 26 complex settlements totally reframes preconceptions archaeologists and anthropologists had about the Amazon region and the nature
of the Casarabe culture who inhabited it from AD 500 - 1400. Before the Hispanic occupation of the 16th Century, the region’s people were believed to have lived in small, isolated groups with limited social and agricultural progress. The findings of Prümer’s team completely blow the lid off that. The laser-mapped sites suggest dense population centres, typically interlinked by just an hour’s walk. Long, straight connective causeways further evidence the organised, established nature of the Casarabe society and, as the implication goes, wider Amazon populous. The Casarabe farmed for a living – predominantly maize and cassava, but the epicentre of their society was nevertheless the city. Well, two cities in fact; today referred to as Landivar and Cotoca. Though already known to archaeologists, Prümers’ team of researchers used the LiDAR technology to finally reveal their massive scale and architectural sophistication. Their efforts showed Landivar to inhabit an area

Some 20 feet high and 100 feet excavation and research is now planned in length, archaeologists still don’t know to solidify hypotheses and uncover what purpose this large space served more details about this previously but advancement of the science of misrepresented civilization.
muography could hold the key to that mystery and more. Muography reveals density variance within structures by detecting the path of naturally occurring radiation in the form of cosmic ray particles known as muons. These highenergy particles can pass through solid objects more easily than X-rays, and by measuring the way in which they interact with different density materials such as granite, limestone or air, deflecting energy and light as they do, extremely sciencey scientists are able to build models of interior structures without physically inhabiting them. The discovery of the Big Void five years ago catalysed the ETGP mission which today aims to develop a device with 100 times the sensitivity of previously used equipment. The telescope will detect literally trillions of incoming muons to produce highresolution images from several vantage points, the hope being that a complete image of the internal architecture of the Great Pyramid along with any objects remaining inside will subsequently reveal the nature and purpose of the recently discovered spaces, alongside any others still uncovered. Though it will take an estimated three years to create a highresolution map of the entire pyramid, the recording device spending months in each of a number of carefully calibrated positions, the potential for application of the technology is extremely exciting to the wider scientific community.

Beetroot KING OF SUPERFOODS
Hello summer! How nice is it to have some sunshine on our faces? I feel like the whole vibe changes once the sun comes out. Lighter clothes, alfresco dining and much better moods. This is also one of my favourite times of the year as it is the start of the growing season and many good things to come produce wise. For this week’s ingredient we are going to dive into the world of beetroots. An ingredient that is often liked or disliked and can cause a real divide.
Beetroot is in season from May to October in the UK. The Beetroot evolved from wild seabeet which is a native of coastlines from India to Britain. The familiar rounded root variety was developed around the sixteenth century and gained widespread popularity in Europe a couple of hundred years later. Fresh beetroot has much to commend it in terms of flavour (sweet, slightly earthy), texture (smooth, crisp and velvety) and colour (dark red/purple and even yellow or an appealingly lurid pink when combined with cream or yoghurt). The leaves can be eaten if they’re fresh and treated like chard.
110
Store the roots unwashed in the fridge or on a cool veg rack where they should last a few weeks. Start off by cutting off the leaves and store in an unsealed plastic bag in the fridge. The leaves should be used within a day or two but the root will keep for a couple of weeks. You can stir fry the leaves with a bit of olive oil and garlic (yum). Beets will retain their flavour, colour and goodness much better if cooked unpeeled, especially when boiled. Give them a good scrub and boil or roast whole until tender, and slip away the skins to eat. If they are big and time is short they can be peeled and roasted in wedges or sliced thinly and made into a dauphinoise style gratin. Peel and wash well if grating or thinly slicing to eat raw. You can also boil them and keep in the fridge for salads, yogurts, dressings or even brownies. Wear gloves if you want to avoid stained hands.

I love using Beets in cooking. The sweet, earthy bright purple root that adds a resplendent splash of colour to roasted root veg, gratins, soups, slaws and salads. Freshly picked beetroot is a world away from the vinegary pickled beetroots found in jars or the overcooked varieties from supermarket shelves give it a try, you may be surprised! This is a recipe for a delicious condiment with a difference! The beautiful pink colour of the beetroot and the creamy, tangy flavours really do add a burst of colour and taste to any meal.

Our envious gaze must have settled a little too long on the neighbouring table’s cocktail order, (ok we might have been staring) and before we knew it we were sampling alcoholic and virgin house creations to die for. No more drinks for us, this is work, no wait it’s almost 7pm, same again please! Now for the main event. Wagyu mini burgers with caramelised onion, rocket and mustard offered alongside six Duck and Foie gyozas accompanied by hoisin sauce, sweet chilli and a lime dip. s it even summer if you don’t spend a day or two at la Sala by the Sea?
Currently enjoying its busiest ever start to a summer season, this iconic Marbella beach club has continued to evolve year on year and now stands without equal. Families, hens, stags, locals, tourists, young and not so young are all made to feel equally welcome and party side by side in a fabulous atmosphere with live entertainment (saxophone and electric drums on the day of our visit), a sparkling swimming pool, VIP wet area, live dj and the best thai food on the coast.

As this was not exactly our first visit of the season we had already mentally prepared for our signature starter: 6 succulent king prawns lightly battered in tasty tempura served in shot glasses with sweet chilli, soy and ginger and a cooling cucumber vinaigrette. Continuing the theme we then tucked in to another perennial favourite of prawn pad thai, perfectly cooked noodles with deep layers of sweet and aromatic flavours, gratefully washed down with a crisp, citric Verdejo to cleanse the palate in readiness for the stir fried Beef Kaprow, served piping hot and topped with fresh chilli and home grown basil…delicious!.
La Sala’s talented team of Thai and international chefs have clearly perfected a now established and fine tuned menu but do add new dishes

regularly, as such we decided to round off our day at the beach with their latest creation of a Moroccan spiced Tagine, we chose the melt in the mouth lamb option over the vegetarian version.
So whether your favourite dip is in the pool, the sea or a Prawn in a shot glass be sure to take a dip into the la sala by the sea summer experience because life’s better by the beach!
