PUBLISHER’S LETTER
HEY, WHO TURNED THE THERMOSTAT UP?
I
know that it’s June and that soon we will be celebrating Noche de San Juan, but this has been a bit mad, hasn’t it? Temperatures in the midnineties might be okay during August but this early in the year you can only wonder how high they will rise by peak season. Still, you can rely on the SOCIETY team to keep a cool head and, despite the crippling heat and increasingly active party season, we have still managed to bring you over 160 pages of great content. This extraordinary June issue has somehow been achieved despite spending the past 10 days watching the mighty Baggies taming Chelsea by 3-0 on a loop! Anyway, we have assembled some fantastic features to help you to make the most of the season, with plenty of restaurant reviews, which should solve all your eating out requirements. For an incomparable dining experience head on down to Don Giovanni’s at Finca Cortesin. Fancy a little beach action? You can’t afford to miss out on the friendly ambience, superb service and great food at La Sala by the Sea. On the ‘liquid lunch’ front we have some topnotch advice about wine by D-wine’s sommelier, Julio. This month we also have an exclusive interview with singing sensation Ciara, who is most definitely one to watch. Our editor, Amber O’Shaughnessy, had the opportunity to ask a few questions and the resultant answers should tell you all you need to know about this exciting talent whose new album, Jackie, is based on real events from her own life and dedicated to someone very close to her. We were delighted when we heard that husband and wife team, Thomas and Anita McMillan, had opened a new salon in Elviria. This dynamic duo built up a hairdressing empire in London and Scotland before selling up and opting for the quiet life in Marbella. Well, all I can say is that they must have a very powerful work ethic, because it wasn’t long before the siren call of cutting
16
and styling had them looking for premises here. They have now opened The House Hairdressing in Pino Golf’s commercial area and it’s already proving a case of ‘book early to avoid disappointment’. Additionally, they are the only Bumble & Bumble stockists in the whole of Spain, which is a good indicator of a five-star experience. The summer season has already swung into action, if the quality of the events is anything to go by! Not only have we witnessed the opening of the new casino on Gibraltar’s glamorous Sunborn Hotel (where else in the world can you enjoy a game of Black Jack on a superyacht with grande luxe hotel facilities?) but it’s all been kicking off at Aqwa Mist. Marbella’s favourite club welcomed Jason Derulo – yes, him of ‘Talk Dirty’ fame – and let’s just say that a good time was had by all! You can read all about these two great social events, along with many others, in this month’s issue. Apart from all of this we bring you the exclusive first test drive of the new Audi First Generation Q7 by our Ian Kuah and there are pages full of great fashion suggestions for the summer season too. HAVE A FANTASTIC JUNE ON US! Until next time... Andy Clark

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT EXCLUSIVE: R ’n’ B superstar Ciara Talks about Becoming a Mother, ‘Going Against the Grain’ with her New Album and All Things Fitness
2015 THE MOTHER OF ALL YEARS FOR
Interview by Amber O’Shaughnessy
22
CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT
In this EXCLUSIVE SOCIETY Marbella Magazine interview, we chat to singer-songwriter Ciara. With the release of her brand new album and the birth of her son Future, Ciara is currently enjoying life more than ever before.
My new album Jackie is named after my mother because... I have a very close
relationship with her; I love my mom so much. I dedicated this album to her at a time in my life where I understand things on a greater scale. Now that I am a mother myself, I can see life through her eyes.
The overriding theme of the album is... motherhood - this
album marks the most special time in my life and that is definitely a big part of me becoming a mom myself.
In the ‘I Bet’ music video, I wanted... to go against the grain
my mom’s car. I was very young, I can’t remember the exact age, but I remember that I had a unique tone and a very strong connection to music.
My greatest career achievement to date is... The biggest music inspirations throughout my childhood were... Michael Jackson,
Janet Jackson, Sade and Missy Elliot.
In the past few years I have branched out into acting, but... it would be impossible to
choose between singing and acting as I love both of them equally.
along to the radio in the back of
as R&B/ Pop
I like to work out at the gym... I train five days a week with one hour gym sessions. It’s a combination of plyometric movement and weight training.
I would describe my personal style as... “tomboy chic”. One of the best moments in my life was when... I held my son
for the first time after he was born
I now have a son, motherhood has been... the coolest thing
ever! I truly am having the time of my life!
All the headlines about ‘I Bet’ assume that the song addresses a specific, past relationship of mine. It was inspired by... my life experiences
I remember first realising I could sing when... I was singing

of what people expected from me. I wanted to show a softer and more vulnerable side and I think I achieved that with this song.
and is a very real song. I also believe that it goes beyond my personal experiences and it is a song for everyone. Many people tell me how this song has helped them and that makes me feel good.
life is what you make it and you determine your own destiny. Your dream truly starts and ends with you.
Ciara’s 6th studio album Jackie is available in stores and online now.
I have been lucky enough to work with some incredible artists like Justin Timberlake and Missy Elliott and also toured with the likes of Chris Brown, I believe that collaborating with an artist... starts with what I feel a song needs. It needs to be organic.
Balancing my personal and professional life can be difficult, but the best philosophy for me is...
whenever I have to go to work, I zone in on that and give it my all. When I go home, I literally leave work at the door. Balance is important to me.
My mantra is... 23

Sugar by Deirdre Riordan Hall
Sugar Legowski-Gracia wasn’t always fat, but fat is what she is now at age 17. Not as fat as her mama, who is so big she hasn’t got out of bed in months. Not as heavy as her brother, Skunk, who has more meanness in him than fat, which is saying something. But she’s large enough to be the object of ridicule wherever she is: at the grocery store, walking down the street, at school. Sugar’s life is dictated by taking care of Mama in their run-down home—cooking, shopping, and, well, eating. A lot of eating, which Sugar hates as much as she loves. When Sugar meets Even (not Evan— his nearly illiterate father misspelled his name on the birth certificate), she has the new experience of someone seeing her and not her body. As their unlikely friendship builds, Sugar allows herself to think about the future for the first time, a future not weighed down by her body or her mother. Soon Sugar will have to decide whether to become the girl that Even helps her see within herself or to sink into the darkness of the skin-deep role her family and her life have created for her.

A breakneck race against time…and an implacable enemy. An anonymous young woman murdered in a run-down hotel, all identifying characteristics dissolved by acid. A father publicly beheaded in the blistering heat of a Saudi Arabian public square. A notorious Syrian bio-tech expert found eyeless in a Damascus junk-yard. Smouldering human remains on a remote mountainside in Afghanistan. A flawless plot to commit an appalling crime against humanity. One path links them all, and only one man can make the journey.
Queen of the Trailer Park by Alice Quinn
Rosie Maldonne is outspoken and sexy. She’s also unemployed, and, with three children and a cat, life is a little tough. The four of them—well, five, if you count the cat—live in the South of France, in a run-down trailer near a vacant lot. They make do, living off her part-time waitressing job and a little help from the state. Rosie thinks things are finally turning around when she meets handsome police officer Jérôme—until she realizes that his appearance coincides with her friend Véro’s disappearance. Then, something even stranger happens: Rosie finds a package with a crazy amount of money in the rubbish bin of a fast-food joint. With so much going on, Rosie has some big questions: where is Véro? Is Jérôme too good to be true? Who put all that cash in the trash? And what happens when they want it back?

TURN IT UP!
‘Sun Goes Down’ – Robin Schulz ft. Jasmine Thompson
Robin Schulz has gone and done it again – he’s created another big summer sound, which will be played at all the beach clubs around Europe in the coming months. Schulz’s signature magical synths and cinematic strings combine with the stunning vocals of Jasmine Thompson (who happens to be just 13-yearsold), resulting in a track that’s unique, fresh and utterly dreamy.
‘Beautiful to Me’ – Olly Murs
‘Riva (Restart the Game)’ – Klingande
The French deep house producer swaps his classic saxophone sound for the harmonica in this new track ‘Riva’, meaning ‘seize’ in English. It’s set to be another big summer song this year with its tribal drums and punchy deep basslines, whilst the harmonica addition adds authenticity and originality.
‘Poison’ – Rita Ora
This track has been delayed time and time again over the past 14 months but it could well be worth the wait. The track, which is about Ora’s bad luck in love, has some very cool artwork and is widely speculated to be a huge hit at all the festivals this summer.
‘Photograph’ – Ed Sheeran It’s yet another top tune from X, the successful album by Ed Sheeran. ‘Photograph’ pulls at the heartstrings of every listener in true Sheeran style, but this track also features the singer’s tender falsetto and sweet guitar licks, which add a whole other dimension to the song, Swoon.
26
The new X Factor host will be tugging at the heartstrings of every 13 year-old girl with this new track from his album Never Been Better. He performed this song from the album in concert recently, dedicating it to all of his fans. It’s hard not to like this cheeky chappy and ‘Beautiful to Me’ is catchy and memorable.
‘Love Me So’ – Stereo Kicks
This group of lads from the X Factor never quite found their mojo on the reality TV show but this has all changed with their new song ‘Love Me So’. The song title began trending on Twitter last week after the group started performing it during their current headline tour of the UK. Now that 1D have found themselves one band member lighter, this could be an interesting chapter for the eight guys in Stereo Kicks.

By Amber O’Shaughnessy
Frizzy curls, split ends and visible roots? Fear not, for husband and wife hairdressing A-team, Thomas and Anita McMillan have just arrived in Spain. With countless internationally recognised hairdressing awards under their belt and a celebrity clientele to boot, this dynamic duo recently sold up their salon empire in London and Scotland for the quieter life over here in Spain. Yet it seems the McMillans just can’t resist their love for the game, opening The House Hairdressing in Elviria just six weeks ago.

T
homas and Anita, it’s fair to say, were at the top of their game within the UK for hairdressing. Throughout 20 years of hard work and dedication, the couple learned their craft and gradually built up a hugely successful collection of hair salons, named Cox McMillan. At their peak the McMillans, alongside their team of over 100 hairdressing magicians, were solving the hair dilemmas of close to 900 clients a week. Somehow, amidst this staggering number of appointments, they also found time to invest their years of expertise and barnet-based knowledge to launch a hairdressing academy, training people with the view to hiring them in one of their salons afterwards. “It got to a stage where we were only employing people who had been trained by us,” Anita tells Editor Amber O’Shaughnessy, “so the standard of hairdressing and level of education was very high.” It comes as no surprise, therefore, that Cox McMillan attracted a whole host of celebrity clients as their reputation for an unparalleled hairdressing experience became known throughout the UK.
Famous personalities such as Emma Willis, Louise Redknapp, John Terry and his wife Toni, Janet Street Porter, Kerry Katona, the Little Mix ladies and glamour model Sophie Reed all passed through their salon doors. Thomas and Anita had achieved all they wanted to back in the UK, from glittering hairdressing accolades (Anita won Hair Colourist of the Year twice, the salon chain was nominated no less than 25 times at the British Hairdressing Awards and won Employee of the Year an impressive four times) to building up an international clientele, some of whom flew in from countries as far off as the USA for a signature hair treatment. “We wanted to slow down slightly,” says Thomas, “I wasn’t cutting hair anymore since looking after the business alone was a full time job.” So The House Hairdressing in Elviria was born. After spending many happy holidays on the Coast, the McMillans always dreamed of escaping for a life in the sunshine. Then the local in Elviria’s bustling Pino Golf row of shops, bars and restaurants came on the market. It was
an opportunity too good to miss for the twosome and their three children. The House has been designed to feel intimate, relaxed and almost like a home from home for its clients. Although open for just six weeks, the McMillans’ solid reputation has already attracted clients both old and new, as well as some local celebrities including The Only Way is Essex’s Elliot Wright who has recently relocated here. Residents of the Coast can now not only benefit from the McMillans’ impressive hairdressing background (Thomas specialises in curly hair whilst Anita is known for colouring) but also the unique range of hair care brands available within the salon. As the first and ONLY stockist of Bumble&Bumble in the whole of Spain, The House is clearly picking right up from where it left off in the UK – at the top of the tree for hairdressing.

Smokey is still big this party season but ditch those greys and blacks and try some more daring colours like purples and reds. Also use eye products on your lips, sometimes they can have more longevity. Just add a gloss over the top to enhance the colour and add shine.

SOCIETY Marbella would like to welcome our new and very much in demand columnist Daniel Boardman. This month he will be giving you the low down on bangs and his blonde moment as well as showing you how to get your rag on.
THE BLUNT OF IT
INFUSE YOUR BALAYAGE THE BIG BANG Fringes are on their way back in. Bangs at the spring shows ranged from the throwback to the classic to the totally out-there. Hairstyling legend Guido Palau created a messy, “underground punk” style for the Mark Jacobs SS15 show, while Givenchy went for straight, silky and just the right amount of subtle, texture; very Jane Birkin. Fringes can be hard to manage so this is where you need to take the advice of your stylist. If haven’t got the time to spend styling it every day, then your hairdresser can create something which needs a lot less maintenance. You hairstyle should work with your lifestyle, not against it.

I know, I know - I keep banging on about the bob, but seriously, it is NOT going anywhere. For the summer, the bob is moving towards a collarbone length, the sharper the better. Oh, how I do love a blunt bob! Even with long hair, I prefer a blunt finish, particularly if your hair is more on the fine side. A blunt cut looks good on anyone as it makes the hair look and feel thicker. Adding texture to fine hair can not only split the hair but you can end up looking like you have a mullet, and, my God, that is not a good look. Garth from Wayne’s World, anyone? Always remember my motto ladies, LENGTH EQUALS STRENGTH. If split ends are a problem then I need to introduce you to Redken’s Extreme Length Primer and Length Sealer, €37,50, which builds strength from root to tip and targets split ends.
What I particularly love about a fringe is that you can simply tie the rest of your hair back, wash only your fringe, then work a little Kerastase Elixir Ultime oil €37,20 through your bangs and blast it dry while running your fingers through it. The end result is polished perfection in under five minutes.
Ombre has left the building and it’s now time to welcome the Balayage. Balayage is a colour technique which creates pieces of hand painted lightened hair through the mid lengths and ends, great for a natural sunkissed look. As summer is here most of my clients are demanding to go blonde - this can be anything from caramel to extreme white. However, my most popular look at the moment is more bronze goddess using the Balayage technique. Think JLo. All coloured hair needs a little extra TLC during the summer months. Invest in an intense treatment mask such as the Redken After Sun Masque €22,12, which is an after-sun treatment created to repair coloured hair exposed to the sun. Your tresses will thank you for it.

RAG IT UP Now I don’t always want to drone on about having to go to the salon to keep your hair looking up to date. Personally, I am also fond of a little DIY. Inspired by my grandmothers’ best coiffe tips, I wanted to bring this old-school hairsetting technique into the 21st century. To create perfect beach waves you need to get ready for a blast from the past and rag it up. What you need:
THE NEWBIE We have a new member to the Reflections team; meet Lauren Henry, who has quickly become my partner in crime. Vidal Sassoon trained, she has spent the past 10 years tending to the tresses of London’s elite, from Mayfair socialites to Shoreditch hipsters. This girl doesn’t follow trends, she sets them. Lauren is a super talented hair colouring technician and, like me, loves a bit of Balayage. Currently there is a waiting list to get an appointment with me and I hate seeing my clients disappointed. Knowing that Lauren can step in and fill my shoes, creating looks that I would be proud of has really made my summer.
* An old t-shirt or fabric * Scissors * Sea Salt spray * Brush and comb * Hair clips Start with hair that’s about 70 per cent dry and spritz in some Redken Fashion Waves 07 sea salt-infused spray, €16,88. Cut the t-shirt into approximately 15 strips. Starting at the front of your head, section off a one-inch section of hair. Hold your strip of fabric perpendicular to your hair and wrap the ends around the rag a couple of times. Next, roll the hair up towards your scalp, stopping at ear level. Once your hair has been rolled all the way, tie the rag into a knot to secure. Repeat all over the head, until all hair has been tied up. For a more natural look use different sized rags which will result in a look that isn’t so uniform. Let hair air dry and sleep on it. Rags are so much more comfortable than those curlers!
All products and treatments are available from: Reflections Hair Nails & Skincare Centro Plaza, Nueva Andalucia, Marbella + 34 902 325 324 + 34 952 906 524 www.reflectionsmarbella.com Image courtesy of Gold Fever Extensions, now available at Reflections
In the morning your hair will be dry and cool, so carefully unknot each piece of fabric and unroll your curls. Shake out the curls with your fingers or comb them through with a wide-tooth comb for a looser curl. ENJOY XXX

Lisa Lashes
Having known the bubbly person that is Lisa for many years, I have seen her lash application work on many different clients and have always been very impressed at how natural they looked. As a make-up artist myself, I have seen eyelash extensions applied to many of my own clients and brides, when they are not evenly spread or too much glue has been used. I had my own lashes done to see what all the hype about these new xD lashes was all about. xD lashes is a sustainable volume eyelash technique developed in Russia that is now spreading to the USA and Europe. Several ultra-lightweight lashes are applied to each individual lash in a way that does not excessively strain the natural eyelash like more common techniques such as layering or feathering. xD creates a larger bond area with less glue for stronger, longer lasting extensions.
42
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF XD VOLUME LASH EXTENSIONS? The main benefit of xD Lashes is naturallooking volume, and lots of it. These make a huge difference to clients with naturally sparse lashes. I have to say I was so impressed, her attention to detail is phenomenal and the finished result was absolutely amazing, I love my lashes. Contact Lisa on 618 846 119 or lovelashesmarbella@gmail.com to book an appointment or consultation with her ahead of the summer months.

AN EXCITING NEW ERA FOR WOOD
W
ood Salon is delighted to announce a new development - bringing together two of the biggest names in Marbella, this signals a new and exciting era in the hairdressing world on the Costa del Sol. Daud from Colour and Cutting Cru and Zoe Wood have joined forces, combining the two salons for a revolutionary affiliation, establishing a strong and dynamic creative team at Wood Salon. The two hairdressers both trained in top salons in Manchester but it wasn’t until they arrived in Marbella that they actually met - and the connection was immediate. Daud’s experience as the first celebrity hairdresser in the UK meant appearing on shows such as GMTV, as well as owning and running his own salon, which was the first Marbella-based salon to be featured in Hairdressing Journal. He offers an energetic and vibrant addition to the elegant boutique salon and, having been approached by some of the world’s leading hairdressers - including the award-winning colourist, Daniel Galvin in London - Daud’s reputation for excellence precedes him.
44
Widely acknowledged as the best extension expert on the coast, Zoe’s creative flair combined with Daud’s experience and expertise will offer the ultimate hairdressing salon experience. Daud was looking for a friendly and personable salon that was intimate enough to build up strong working relationships with team and clients alike and when he walked through the doors of Zoe Wood’s establishment, he knew immediately that this was the salon for him. “Hairdressing has to be fun,” he says. “You need to love what you do and provide your clients with the ultimate feel-good factor – looking good as well as feeling good, so that they leave with a bounce in their step – as well as in their hair!” At Wood Salon client care is the primary concern, ensuring that every client enjoys a friendly, intimate experience that is fun and enjoyable and delivers the very best service and results. Recognised throughout Marbella for his charisma, personable manner and great sense of humour, as well as his
extraordinary hairdressing skills, Daud is thrilled to have united with such a wellestablished creative salon to move into a sensational new epoch. “Having worked against each other for so many years, we decided it was finally time to team up and come together,” says Zoe, while Daud chimes in with, “rather than working in opposition!” Let’s face it, if they’re already finishing each others’ sentences, this complementary partnership is set to be a match made in heaven! “ So, How Do You
nutsson
get your
” protein?
There are several ways that we can access protein in Plant Based foods. Depending on the ingredients, soaking, sprouting, fermenting, heating foods and food combining can help the body access protein more efficiently.
THE QUESTION ON EVERYONE’S LIPS.
Is protein important? Absolutely! But in large quantities it could actually harm your health. The trick is to upgrade the proteins we consume and to make safer food choices on a regular basis.
Combine two or more of these food groups to create easily digestible protein
1 2 3 4
Grains & Cereals (wholegrain, not white! buckwheat, millet and such)
Proteins are molecules composed of amino acids. The amino acids are made available to us through digestion, so when we eat protein we want to get hold of those amino acids to form muscles. But remember my friends, you don’t get free muscles by sitting on the couch eating well, you need to get that bum moving too!
Protein from Meat: There are 2 main downsides for taking the protein we need from meat
1
The meat industry is destroying the environment and has become the most unethical industry on the planet. The animals that are farmed do not eat and live the way they are naturally meant to.
2
The human body is not designed to extract the “protein building” amino acids it needs from meat. In order to do so it has to produce huge amounts of stomach acid, that in turn make the body a very acidic environment – a perfect place for bacteria to grown and inflammation to take a hold. (inflammation = cancer, skin problems, arthritis, heart disease and so on… the list is endless!)
48
A better source of Protein:
What is Protein?
Pulses & Beans (lentils, beans, chick peas etc.) Rice Nuts & Seeds (Peanuts, sesame seeds, quinoa)
The key is to incorporate vegetables and the mixing of grains, rice, pulses, nuts and seeds as our body’s digestive system is designed to easily break these down in order to extract what we need from them. How much protein do we actually need? Its simple, lets take myself as an example; I weigh 58 kg meaning 0.8 x 58 = 46.4. That means I need approximately 46.4 grams of Protein daily. So if we have a look at the table below it’ll give you an example of my needed daily protein intake with meals! It’s easy!
How I get my protein For breakfast I’m having 2 slices of my super bread with peanut butter
8g + 15 g = 23 grams
Then for lunch I have a quinoa salad with broccoli sprinkled with hemp seeds,
While animal flesh is a complete protein, it’s also “complete” with potentially harmful saturated fat and cholesterol, plus hormones, antibiotics, and oftentimes other unsavory party poopers like E. coli. And, unlike their plant-based counterparts they lack phytonutrients, water, antioxidants, enzymes and fibre.
16 + 10 + 8 = 34 grams.
Did you know that many plants have complete proteins?
I am not even half through my day and I have already consumed 57 grams of good quality protein.
For example; quinoa, soy products, buckwheat and hemp seeds.
There are tons of options once you embrace plant-based cooking and there’s an entire world of food (filled with all the protein you need) waiting to be savoured.
Other plant proteins are only slightly incomplete so, as long as you’re eating a variety of them, you’ve got a complete protein powerhouse. You don’t even have to eat them all in the same meal or even on the same day.
“Proteins are long strings of amino acids. There are twenty different amino acids you need for good health, but our bodies can only make eleven of them. The remaining nine are referred to as essential amino acids. Because we can’t make them, it is essential for us to get them from our diet. Foods that contain all nine essential aminos are known as complete proteins, although they are not necessarily better protein sources.” - Kris Carr - Crazy Sexy Cancer

A PAIN IN THE
NECK If you suffer from migraines, you know they are so much more than ‘just’ a headache - debilitating pain that can last for days, serious side effects that make it difficult to lead a normal life, having to avoid certain foods or activities for fear of bringing on a migraine and medication that is hit and miss.
Is there an alternative? With advances in scanning technology, we now know that the primary cause of migraines are the nerves – the trigeminal, the occipital and the brainstem, which are all located in the upper cervical spine i.e. the neck. Many migraine sufferers have neck, shoulder or upper back pain immediately before, during or after their attacks. Are the two connected? The studies and evidence says, “Yes”. Fix the neck, fix the problem Resolving the nerve issues in the neck takes the pressure off the nerves. Without the pressure on the nerves there is no trigger for the migraines. No Guesswork The critical first step is a full expert, clinical assessment of the cervical spine (and probably the rest of the spine too) by Consultant Physiotherapist, Estelle Mitchell of The Bodyworks Clinic. By combining clinical expertise with the latest in nerve imaging technology we take the guesswork out of finding the true cause of your migraine.
50
Effective, personalised treatment Once we know exactly which areas are compromised and to what degree, Estelle can then design a treatment plan designed exactly for you.
Set your Mind at Ease Some patients, especially those who have had a bad experience before, are worried that treatment will trigger a migraine.
There are a wide range of treatment options available and how they are used depends on you and your specific needs. With no manipulation or cracking, Estelle will gently and carefully release the tension and reduce the irritation in the nerves themselves for fast results. Treatment shouldn’t be forever - Estelle will teach you to manage your condition and prevent migraines in the future. We will put together an effective programme that will reduce the frequency and severity of attacks and reduce your medication.
Many treatments will BUT the difference is after an expert, clinical assessment Estelle will know what causes the migraine. So she knows how to turn them off. Estelle will never leave you in pain. And Estelle will always ensure you aren’t in danger of an episode

orking with artisan crafters from across the developing world, three London College of Fashion students have created an eco-friendly womenswear collection combining traditional craft methods with sustainably-led fashion design. The trio of students – designer Georgia Clark, printer Nelly Stewart and knitter Jacob Patterson – came together with craftspeople from the International Trade Centre’s artisan programs in Ethiopia, Peru and Kenya to co-build a collection that expressed a global personality.

The COEXIST collection was born from this experimental and dialectical relationship between designer and maker that placed craftsmanship and collaboration firmly at the centre of its ethos. By utilising pre-loved and up-cycled fabrics; unconventional craft techniques; and low-impact organic materials; a collection was created to revolutionise the mainstream perspective of green fashion, through its progressive, eco-luxe appeal. Forming a partnership with Nelly and Jacob allowed each of us to specialise in our particular field and achieve more together by bringing individual expertise and opinions forward for the greater good of the project. My main objective throughout the design process was to ensure that each expressive element of the collection worked alongside one another. Through in-depth research, careful consideration and open dialogue, textile samples underwent a meticulous process of selection and refinement that helped to build a seamless overall aesthetic.

I combined strong graphic imagery in my prints which were inspired by craftwork and interpretive illustration. I used textured finishes to create a mix of exciting vibrant patterns; utilising sublimation printing where possible to reduce overall water consumption. Wherever possible recycled PET Polyester replaced the need for harmful synthetic material production. The accessories I designed included embossed leather chokers and metal charms which were handcrafted and made from recycled cans, aside from the headdress which was made from recycled wire, all of the materials for these pieces were from Nairobi, Kenya and made by local artisans as part of the ‘Mama Biashara’ charity program.”

THE
Q CONTINUUM
Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the AUDI Q7
“Build it and they will come!” Paraphrasing the famous saying from the 1989 movie, Field of Dreams, is not an inaccurate way of describing Audi’s sales success with the first generation Q7. Between 2006 and this year, they have sold over half a million copies of their first ever full-size SUV. 99
TORQUE TALK
A
lthough it does not look agile, and hardly any car magazine pitched it against its rivals on a racetrack, the fact is that the original Q7 handled pretty well for a car of its size and weight.
engineers are wont to say. Compared to its predecessor the Q7’s new body-inwhite is 71kg lighter, and also benefits from a massive 40 percent increase in static torsion rigidity to 32,700 Nm/degree.
Although the new car is roomier inside, with 41mm more knee, shoulder and head room in front, its exterior dimensions are slightly more compact than before.
This is an impressive figure for a vehicle of this size with five large openings, and as a stiffer bodyshell helps to keep the suspension geometry true under load, the chassis engineers were able to endow the new car with a more comfortable ride and better handling at the same time.
Built on an evolution of Audi’s MLB platform, suitably modified for offroad use, and which will also underpin the next Porsche Cayenne and the forthcoming Bentley SUV, the new Q7 has shed around 325kg model-for-model by using lightweight materials in critical areas. It is now the lightest car in its class. The improved structure is a mix of high strength steel and aluminium, using ‘the right material in the right place’ as
100
The areas where maximum crash resistance is needed are steel, and this means A-pillar to rear doors. The area from the C-post to D-pillar is alloy, along with all exterior panels including the tailgate. The central floorpan area is comprised of steel and aluminium, with
the longitudinal front and rear sections in aluminium. In total, 41 percent of the structure is aluminium, resulting in a best-in-class unladen weight of just 1,970kg for the entry-level five-seater 3.0 TFSI variant, and 1,995kg for the 3.0 TDI. Seven-seater models are 65kg heavier like-for-like. Speaking of weight saving, the new four-link front and five-link rear axles are 27kg and 40kg lighter respectively. The new exhaust system saves 19kg, the new engines are on average 2.5kg lighter, the

With its improved space and comfort, the new Q7 will also be better than ever as VIP transport where its versatility and general comfort will undoubtedly make it a popular choice with clients and chauffeurs alike.

TORQUE TALK new 8-speed automatic transmission is 8.0kg lighter, while the revised fuel tank system weights 46kg less than before, and the seats 19kg less. Finally, the brakes shave 8.5kg from the unsprung weight. My first test drive was in the 333hp supercharged petrol-engined 3.0 TFSI Q7 with the seven-seat option, and within a few hundred metres, this car left an eyebrow raising impression of sophistication and subtle refinement that I felt to be potentially class leading. Importantly, the new Q7 feels premium, substantial in the hewn from the solid sense, and exquisitely finished in Audi’s usual Teutonic fashion. It may not have some of the more emotionally engaging design features of a Range Rover product, but by the same token, it is so much better made, it feels like it will actually last forever. Over several hundred kilometres of driving on all sorts of roads from suburban to highway and demanding mountain passes, the new Q7 only continued to reinforce this positive first impression. Apart from its supple and wellcontrolled secondary ride, and good body control at higher speeds, one of my first subjective observations was the excellence of the electric power steering. I have never quite got on with the steering on the current A6 range, which feels a touch unauthentic and not totally linear in some situations. However, the new Q7’s steering is spot on in feel, feedback and accuracy, invaluable traits on a twisty road. The steering ratio is fixed at 15.8:1, but an optional variable ratio power steering system will be added later.
102
Speaking with Ingo Bentel, the engineer responsible for body and chassis, I found out that good steering feel and feedback was high on the list of the chassis dynamics development team’s priorities. As before, the base model comes with steel springs and gas dampers, but all the test cars we tried had the optional adaptive air suspension, which offers a wide range of adjustment from Comfort to Dynamic and Individual settings via the MMI controller.
Helping the Q7 manoeuvre in car parks, turn into bends keenly, and feel stable in high-speed lane changes is an electronically controlled, electric powered rear wheel steering system. This turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the fronts by up to 5.0 degrees below between 5 and 15km/h, reducing the cars low speed turning circle by up to one metre. At high speeds the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the fronts to aid stability, with a maximum deflection of 3.5 degrees.
TORQUE TALK helping this large vehicle’s perceived and actual agility. All this technology works really well on demanding roads, and Audi was not shy in providing a test route high in the Swiss mountains. On the many curves and hairpins, the Q7 had an agility that defied its physical size. With the torque of the diesel and its fine handling, this big car easily surprised local drivers who could not believe its pace on their local roads. The entry-level wheel size is 8.0J x 18inch shod with 255/60R18 rubber, either Goodyear or Pirelli at this early stage. The largest size option is 21-inch, normally matched with sport suspension option. Both my test cars came on 20-inch wheels with 285/45R20 Pirellis. In combination with the optional air suspension delivered a very cossetting secondary ride in Automatic or Comfort mode and good grip when pushed hard in the bends on the demanding mountain roads.
In answer to my question on suspension options, chassis engineer, Carsten Jablonowski, explained that the Sport suspension for the standard steel set-up drops the ride height by 15mm. However, if you have air suspension the system’s static ride height starts off 25mm lower than the stock steel version, so it is 10mm lower in its normal mode than the steel Sports suspension. However, the air suspension has three possible ride heights that you can set
via the MMI system, and in the second mode, the ride height can be lowered by 35mm under 40km/h, with Dynamic mode dropping the ride height by 15mm at speed. The bottom line is that both systems have the same ride height in highway mode. Rear wheel steering systems are normally found on sporty cars like the Porsche Turbo and GT3, and even the forthcoming BMW 7-Series. This is the first time that rear steering has ever been fitted to an SUV, but it works a treat in
The supercharger on the 2,995cc V6 petrol engine now has a magnetic decoupling clutch for improved efficiency. Making 333hp from 5,500 to 6,500rpm, underpinned by 440 Nm of torque between 2,900 and 5,300rpm, this motor feels smooth and potent from step-off. Its voice disappears completely into the background as you waft along at cruise. However, the two relative shortcomings of this motor are revealed when compared to the 3.0-litre TDI (2,967cc) version I drove on the second day. With 272hp from 3,250 to 4,250rpm, underpinned by 600Nm of torque between 1,500 and 3,000rpm, the refined V6 oil burner is not only vastly more gutsy
103
TORQUE TALK everywhere, but also sips fuel at a much more parsimonious rate. The diesel takes 6.3 sec to reach 100km/h from rest, a mere 0.2 sec behind the petrol V6. Their top speeds are 234 and 250km/h respectively. The big differences however, come in fuel economy, Audi claiming a 28-percent fuel economy boost for the new Q7, and this is helped by the best-in-class drag coefficient of 0.31 for a car with air suspension. On paper, the diesel averages 5.7 L/100km (149g/km CO2), with the petroI version pegged at 7.7 L/100km (179g/ km CO2). I carefully monitored the fuel
consumption of both variants during my test drive and found that while it was not difficult to achieve an excellent 6.1 L/100km from the diesel, the petrol Q7 could only manage 14.8 L/100km in similar driving conditions. With its far superior low-end punch, which makes everyday driving so effortless, I would unhesitatingly plumb for the diesel, especially as this latest version is so very refined in its operation, with little discernable diesel clatter even when started from cold. On paper, the V6 petrol and diesel engines appear to be developments of the previous generation in capacity and outputs. But the powertrain engineer I spoke with emphasised under direct questioning that they are in fact all-new power units, even down to the block castings. Only V6 petrol and diesel engines will be available at launch in June, but Audi
104
told us that an entry-level model using the 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder will be sold in the US and Asia. A lower-powered 3.0 TDI V6 variant with 218hp and 500Nm of torque will be added later. Audi has not confirmed if the 4.2 TDI V8 from the A8 will find its way into the Q7, but if it does, it will be a match made in heaven. The new Q7 will also debut Audi’s first diesel Plug-In Hybrid when the Q7 e-tron quattro arrives in early 2016. With system power and torque of 373hp and 700Nm, this model will be rapid and fuel efficient, sipping 1.7 L/100km with 46 g/ km emissions. Helping both performance and economy is a slick eight-speed
automatic transmission with paddle shifters for drivers who wish to be more involved in gear selection. Totally seamless, this ZF transmission was designed to incorporate the self-locking centre differential into its casing to make the cars technical packaging lighter and more compact. In normal running, the differential splits the power 40/60 percent front/rear, but can shift up to 70 percent to the front and 85 percent to the rear instantly if it senses a traction issue. Room in the back is exceptional, and in a first here, you can fit up to six child seats in the seven-seat version. Parents who are school run junkies please take note! On the seven-seat version, the third-row seat arrangement has been designed for maximum ease of operation. A control panel on the side panel of the luggage compartment that enables you to fold and unfold the third seat row at the
touch of a button, while the outer rear seats double-fold for ease of access to the third row. Other buttons on this panel operate the optional retractable tow hook if fitted, and lowers the rear air suspension to make loading and unloading large and heavy objects easier. A powered tailgate is standard on all models. The Audi Virtual Cockpit first seen on the new TT last year is featured on the Q7, and with more real estate available in its spacious cabin, is bigger and brighter than ever. Heat insulating/acoustic glass is an option, as is privacy glass. The new Q7 can be hustled on a
demanding road and retains its grace under pressure thanks to its new suspension and powerful brakes featuring big six-pot calipers in front. However, few owners will ever drive the flagship Audi SUV in such an undignified manner, the bulk of these cars will undoubtedly be pressed into service for the school run and family outings. With its improved space and comfort, the new Q7 will also be better than ever as VIP transport where its versatility and general comfort will undoubtedly make it a popular choice with clients and chauffeurs alike. The first Q7 was something of a landmark car for the Ingolstadt-based manufacturer. While it was popular in the US where its size is more normal, its sales success in Europe probably surprised even Audi. The new Q7 builds on the achievements of its predecessor, adding efficiency and agility to its existing list of strengths.

OVER 10 MILLION HOMES IN SPAIN ARE UNDERINSURED For most people their home is their biggest financial investment and one of their most important assets. Therefore it is essential that your property and all its possessions be properly and comprehensively insured.

Being simply insured is not enough. Check your insurance policy, ask your provider about potential loopholes, make sure its comprehensively insured, or you could face costly repairs should something go wrong.
Buildings insurance covers the actual structure of your home and includes garages, swimming pools, gardens, tennis courts, gates, patios and fences. Cover includes the cost of repairs from damage caused by fire, storm, flood and earthquake. Buildings insurance also covers the permanent fixtures and fittings in your Spanish home and includes fitted kitchens, bathrooms, oil and gas pipes, etc. It’s important that you check your policy carefully. The sum insured must cover the cost of rebuilding the property, and not the current market value.

If you live in Spain then it may be easier to contract your home insurance from a Spanish based insurer. TOTAL TERRACE By Hayley Reed, Founder of Foc Design
Sometimes it seems that you finally get around to sorting out one part of the house only to find that another space needs some love and attention! It might feel like a never-ending and daunting task, but taking pride in your surroundings and putting your own personal stamp on your home should be a pleasure, not a chore. It is always during this time of year that we realise that we
are lucky to use the outside space of our home as much as we do. While we enjoy the winter evenings huddled up by the fire in our lounge or TV room, the summer is the time for we residents of southern Spain to put our terraces and gardens straight. There is a variety of lengths we can go to to make the most of our long al fresco evenings; new sofa sets or a state-of-theart BBQ are bigger investments but there are many ways to transform your terrace
into a new and improved space using your existing furniture and a few new additions. The styles available are as endless as the grill recipes you will find to use on the BBQ, so whether you are hoping to create a peaceful haven with muted tones and soft pastels or bring some colour and fun into your exterior, FOC has created a few favourites to demonstrate just how easy this year’s total terrace makeover can be!.

here is a certain magic about Finca Cortesin, which is quite unlike anywhere else on the Costa del Sol. As you take the winding road inland from the sea the stunning hotel appears, a large white Andalusian country house in a marvel of Moorish and Castillan design and architecture. The beautiful buildings overlook immaculately manicured rambling gardens and, of course, the worldrenowned Finca Cortesin golf course. We approached the hotel’s celebrated Italian restaurant, Don Giovanni, in the early evening and could hear the tinkling of wine glasses and the jovial chatter of diners enjoying the balmy spring evening in the pretty cobbled courtyard. We were seated at a large table and were pleasantly surprised that, despite being a Monday, the restaurant was full! We took our seats and perused our menus with great anticipation. The award-winning chef, Rodrigo Semozuk, had prepared a fabulous tasting menu for us and we eagerly read the list of dishes and wines we were to look forward to as delicious smells emanated from inside.
126
First of all we were served Peach Bellinis – sweet and strong just as they should be. Then came the Artichoke Mojitos, an inspirational and enticing twist on my favourite cocktail. Then it was the turn of the food and dish after dish arrived, each one an impeccably presented taste of Italy. The first plate was a delightful Tomato and Burrata (an Italian cheese made from mozzarella and cream) dish - the tomato divinely fresh while the cheese was a perfectly creamy texture and taste, the two combined to create a heavenly melange of cool meeting warm. The outer shell was solid mozzarella while the inside contained both mozzarella and cream, giving it an unusually soft texture. The second of the many superb starters was Mini Pizzas with Veal Carpaccio and Rocket. Once again the flavours
COSTA CUISINE
were a perfect marriage and the wines selected were outstanding. Then came some Seasoned Mortadella with Crisp Focaccia, which was simply superb and finally the ultimate starter and the chef’s signature dish was served: Egg Millesime. Presented in little Le Creuset pots, this delicious dish was possibly one of the most divine concoctions I have ever tasted. With mushroom, cream and a quail’s egg, plated with a moist focaccia, this scrumptious dish was rich, tasty and seasoned to perfection. Although Don Giovanni is a hotel restaurant and there were a great many guests enjoying their meals there, the Italian restaurant’s excellent reputation means that it’s as popular with locals and food connoisseurs up and down the coast as it is with those on holiday. It also has all the qualities you would expect from a five-star hotel without being stuffy or pretentious and the staff were as friendly as they were efficient.
We had enjoyed the last of our starters and I adjusted my waistband, wishing I had not worn such a tight dress! - for now came the main courses; first a Tagliatelle with Truffle and Parmesan that was light and flavoursome, next Osso Buco, the renowned Milanese speciality of crosscut veal shanks braised with Vegetables, White Wine and Broth. This was cooked to perfection and my fork simply melted into the tender meat. After the Bellinis, Mojitos, red and white wines (which had been topped up throughout the evening) we were giddy and giggly, swearing that we couldn’t possibly eat another morsel when the waiter arrived with the desserts. Now came the pièce de résistance: Vanilla Pannacotta dusted with Cinnamon, which was a dreamy sweet and spicy sensation followed by Espresso Martinis, so delicious that we couldn’t quite decide whether they were a drink or a dessert. This fabulous sugar and caffeine
combination was the ultimate finale; enough caffeine to get the sleepyheads buzzing and sweet enough to satisfy the happy-go-lucky sugar aficionados among us. As the sun set over the sweeping greens and the golden coast, we sipped our Espresso Martinis and enjoyed our Vanilla Pannacotta with pretty pink and purple bougainvillea blooming all around us. One could have imagined us to be lost in a Tuscan vineyard but, no, here we were on the Costa del Sol, daylight fading and we were enjoying one of the most memorable meals of all time. The location is idyllic, the service is faultless and if you truly want to be wined and dined, there is nowhere better. Don Giovanni Ristorante T. 952 937 800 info@hotelcortesin.com fincacortesin.com

COSTA CUISINE
SPOILED
By the Sea Reviewd by Natalie Rose Kern Photos by Julia Roder

lear blue skies, scorching sunshine and a light sea breeze – we had chosen the perfect day for lunch at La Sala by the Sea. With sunbeds lined up beside a swimming pool filled with sun worshippers, couples sitting at the bar enjoying colourful cocktails and a busy restaurant serving sumptuous platters of food to groups of jovial holiday-makers and contented locals, the exclusive beach bar was positively buzzing. We were greeted by smiling staff, funky summer music and the smell of lemongrass and ginger wafting from the tables and we knew immediately that an afternoon of sunshine, laughter and mouth-watering food was on the cards. But here came our first dilemma - where to sit? Three of us wanted shade, the other three wanted to bask in the sunshine. This was no problem at all for our attentive waiter, who moved tables and parasols with such speed and efficiency that our table was immaculately set and positioned by the time we’d finished debating our preferences. Despite the busy and bustling decked terrace, the waiting staff had accommodated us conscientiously and we were seated at a large table that suited all of our needs. La Sala by the Sea is a beach restaurant with a difference – yes, it’s got the sea

views, the cabanas and the busy bar serving everything from champagne to huge jugs of sangria to bikini-clad girls lounging by the pool, but it also promises some of the finest food from its acclaimed kitchen and we were determined to try it all! As we scanned our menus, deliberating and umming and ahhing with increasing excitement, we encountered our second predicament – what to order? I know, I know, these are what one refers to as high class problems but, with an extensive menu offering such a variety of delicious dishes to choose from, we were positively spoiled for choice. Luckily our dashing waiter was back on hand with suggestions and recommendations and we plumped for some mixed starter platters and a selection of Thai main courses for us all to share. Whilst La Sala by the Sea isn’t specifically a Thai restaurant, (the menu offers everything from burgers to salads) it has a distinctively Asian vibe, reminiscent of a luxury beach club on an island in Thailand. With large bronze Buddhas scattered about the terrace, the sound of flowing water as fountains splash into the pool and a vast array of Asian dishes, it offers a refreshing change from the run-of-the-mill beach
bars and chiringuitos dotted along the Coast. The girls had opted for some ice-cold beers and a few Bloody Marys and the barman had whipped me up a delicious smoothie concoction of strawberries, banana and pineapple. We sipped away as sun-kissed bodies sashayed past and beautiful people lounged on giant cushions under shady cabanas. Puerto Banús is famed for its people-watching and La Sala by the Sea is no exception. Within minutes of arrival, the girls had spotted at least four celebrities both dining and bathing in this exclusive, secluded spot. Our starters arrived and we breathed a collective “Ooh!” as the colourful mixed platters were set down in front of us. Chicken Satay, fresh Spring Rolls, Prawn Wontons, Thai Beef Skewers and dainty Dim Sum were immaculately presented alongside dipping dishes of Soy Sauce, Sweet Chilli, creamy Satay and spicy Chilli around an exotic Asian Salad. Another plate arrived with large Crispy Prawns dunked in shot glasses of Assorted Sauces. We tucked in greedily, plunging our skewers into the peanut sauce and daintily dipping our spring rolls into soy and chilli. It was a veritable taste
COSTA CUISINE
sensation and each mouthful was a delightful marriage of sweet and spicy, fresh and creamy and hot and tangy. The Asian salad was dressed in a light lime dressing and was the perfect accompaniment to the assorted appetisers, while the prawns were a resounding hit - although we spent a good while deciding which of the flavours we each preferred (mango was the winner) and, as the dishes were cleared we marvelled that considering we were supposed to be on diets – we had munched our way through almost every morsel. As the sun made her way across the cloudless sky, we shuffled about to reposition ourselves and apply sun cream and our waiter arrived once more to pour water and wine and to check that everything was to our liking – and oh, it was indeed. Although La Sala by the Sea offers fine dining to thrill even the most discerning of food aficionados, its relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and laidback environment means that you can enjoy an exquisite meal without any of the pretence or smug formalities of other gastronomic hotspots. Here, bikinis, swimsuits and sarongs are just as de rigueur as dresses and heels and the clientele is a cosmopolitan blend of the Coast’s elite gastronomes,
glamorous beach babes (and boys) and groups of friends and families like us, enjoying the sights and delights. Our main courses were served and we wondered for a moment whether we’d ordered too much, as dishes of creamy curries and spicy stir-fries were placed about the table. The rice was served in pretty bamboo containers and we passed plates and bowls around, serving and sampling each of the dishes. A tasty Peppered Chicken Stir-Fry was a favourite with those who weren’t fond of too much spice. A delightful Kapraw with Beef, Basil and Garlic packed a punch for the more adventurous – and me? Well, let’s just say that the Green Thai Curry didn’t stray too far from my side of the table! Creamy, spicy and bursting with flavour, the Coconut and Lemongrass Curry was sensational. After we’d feasted gleefully - and complained about how much we’d eaten and how on earth we were going to fit into our bikinis - our waiter handed us the dessert menus and our eyes lit up once more. Cheesecakes, Brownies, Ice Cream; we didn’t know what to select. We asked our waiter to bring us a selection “with six spoons please!” and he did not disappoint.
All talk of diets was extinguished as soon as the scrumptious-looking plates arrived. Delicately decorated with pretty flowers, they looked almost too good to eat; almost! The Brownie was soft and gooey with the interestingly crunchy addition of pecans; the Cheesecake, smooth and creamy with a crunchy buttery base and the Ice Cream was the ideal accompaniment and a perfect choice to end the meal. Teas and coffees were served, along with a few more cocktails and soon we were sleepy and in need of a siesta. Our waiter organised a cabana for us, with both sun and shade, (he knew us by now!) and we sauntered down to relax by the pool. La Sala on the Sea offers the best of both worlds; a chic, stress-free beach club to while away the afternoons and unwind, and an excellent restaurant where you can enjoy a leisurely threecourse meal. With faultless service, an exceptional menu and delectable food – not to mention the enchanting surroundings I think we may have found the ultimate spot to dine and doze this summer . That, at least, was something on which we could all agree! lasalabythesea.com

Marbella’s Hottest Seat in Town

P
aella’s y Más combines the traditional and the contemporary to great effect, with refreshingly reasonable prices; these are just two of the reasons why the restaurant has built up such a devoted fan base despite being open for just 12 months.

Ask yourself this question: if a close family member or lifelong best friend who is also a massive foodie was to travel to Marbella for just 24 hours, where would you take them for dinner? I don’t need to consider my answer for a second since it would, of course, be Paella’s y Más.
COSTA CUISINE
which suit any flavour fancy you have. From the Fideua with Salmon, Mini Calamar, Spinach and Cabrales Blue Cheese to Head Chef Javier’s own invention Oven Baked Fideua with Confit of Duck, Mixed Iberian Meats and Raisins. If you’re more creature of habit than gastronomic experimenter, the classic choices of Paella Mixta and Black Ink Paella also feature on the carefully compiled menu. All of the dishes are packed with flavour and arrive at your table with a homemade aioli dip and fresh lemon, which are the perfect additions to this tasty meal.
It’s a well known fact that Marbella residents are spoilt for choice in terms of eating out options. We live on a stretch of coastline littered with everything from lively chiringuitos to chic Italian restaurants for those feeling flush. Obviously, with so much choice, there is room for error and - let’s be honest – is there anything more infuriating than paying for a bad quality meal? This is where we come in. Every month we head to some of the Coast’s popular eateries to see what all the fuss is about, whittling down the very best places to eat in and around Marbella. The SOCIETY Marbella team unanimously agrees that Paella’s y Mas is worth the hype; the restaurant is a culinary star of the Coast and here are just a few reasons why.
The flawless service synonymous with Paella’s y Mas makes it hard to believe that the restaurant opened its doors just one year ago. The hugely talented kitchen crew is supported by the front of house team who each have an extensive knowledge of the food and wine available. This makes for a seamless dining experience and, when the dishes are as flawlessly executed as they are, why would you look for anything less?
Paella’s y Mas is all about reinvigorating love for Spanish cuisine. The culinary crew takes signature Spanish dishes and supercharges them, transforming the most ordinary of meals beyond all recognition. I’m talking handcrafted Croquetas with Bellota Pata Negra Ham and Spanish Manchego Cheese and typical Morcillitas Asadas but served with Poached Pears and Sweet Málaga Wine.
The whole vibe of the restaurant is one of urban style combined with laid back local friendliness. Couples looking for a romantic evening meal for two pass through the doors of Paella’s y Mas as frequently as large, chattering groups of madrileños on a Sunday afternoon who sit around a vast paella dish for 10.
The array of daily specials adds another string to the Paella’s y Mas bow. A particular favourite of mine is the Salmon Tartare served on a bed of smashed Canarian Bananas and Avocado with a scoop of exquisite Olive Oil Ice Cream. It’s an unbeatable combination of flavours and a good option when the heat cranks up during the summer months, especially when accompanied by a glass of crisp Albariño wine. Paella’s y Mas really comes into its own on main course options. They have an unrivalled list of different paellas and fideuas (thin noodles similar to vermicelli),
Paella’s y Mas’s menu is undeniably tasty, the staff are attentive and the ambience is second to none – it’s no wonder then the restaurant has been such a huge hit.

ibera del Duero’s reputation is largely due to the exceptional quality of its red wines, produced in many small and ancient towns surrounding the path of the River Duero. The capital of Ribera del Duero is the historic town of Aranda de Duero, which boasts a series of antique underground cellars (bodegas) built to store wine. Ribera del Duero is almost entirely
devoted to red wine, with Tempranillo the most widely planted grape variety. This is known locally as Tinto Fino or Tinta del Pais, and produces wines, which are deeply coloured, with a firm tannin structure and complex black fruit aromas. The best examples of this wine are those which have aged gracefully over many years.

To become fully familiarized with the diversity of vineyards and terroirs in Ribera del Duero, I recommend that the wine lover visits a series of charming small towns located within the two main terroirs alongside the River Duero. Located within Valladolid are the towns belonging to the so-called Ribera del Duero´s Golden Mile: Valbuena, Pesquera, Quintanilla de Onesimo, Quintanilla de Arriba & Peñafiel, which produce the most elegant of wines. Secondly, in the Province of Burgos you can find Pedrosa de Duero, La Aguilera, Anguix, Roa & La Horra, producing more perfumed and layered wines. These 10
small towns from two of Spain’s provinces benefit from the optimum terroir for tempranillo and have been in the limelight for many years because of the superb quality of wines they produce. At first glance these small towns’ vineyards do not appear especially different to other vineyards nearby, but what sets them apart from the rest is the fact that they are home to a number of highly praised wineries such as Vega Sicilia, Dominio de Pingus, Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos, Pago de Carraovejas, Bodegas y Viñedos Alión, Pago de los Capellanes, Hermanos Sastre, Alonso
del Yerro, Bodegas Conde Neo and Bodegas Astrales. It is between these plots of lands, where the land divisions between each winery are almost unnoticeable, that we find the fruit used to make some of the best wines in Spain.

T
he Sunborn superyacht hotel celebrated the grand opening of its international casino this month and the SOCIETY team headed to Gibraltar to board the stunning floating hotel for a night of revelry. Since its arrival in Gibraltar in March 2014, the five-star yacht has become a landmark luxury destination and entertainment centre for residents and tourists alike. The lavish casino is a super addition to the beautiful boat’s facilities and its opening night saw guests from up and down the Costa del Sol, as well as the crème de la crème of Gibraltar, flocking through

its elegant doors for a night of superb entertainment, food and dancing. The casino is the first joint venture with the highly successful and well-respected Finnish casino operator PAF, which is owned by the Åland Islands. The PAF business operation was originally set up to create profit for the good of the community – which is still the focus of its business aims. The distinguished company has also won awards for its ‘socially responsible gambling’ approach. The casino is the first of its kind and the only one on board a superyacht hotel in the
world. The smart dress code, tableside drink service and its membership programme promise a James Bond gaming experience reminiscent of the glory days and romance of the casinos on the French Riviera. The Sunborn’s casino will offer all the fun and excitement of playing as well as soaking up that stylish and indulgent casino experience. With Black Jack, Punto Banco and American roulette all on offer from 4pm to 4am every day, life on the Rock just turned up the glamour. We can’t wait to go back! casinosunborn.com

A SHOWSTOPPING PERFORMER Antony Wolfson is a highly successful entertainer on the Costa del Sol. Having arrived on the Coast just over two years ago, he has quickly established himself as a premier rock ‘n’ roll singer, performing in no less than eight shows a week. He is resident lead entertainer at The Marriott, The Guadalmina Golf Hotel, Hotel Los Monteros and the Alanda Club Marbella to mention just a few. Antony is working with the famous Marbella Promoter - ex-head of Warner Records - Tim Knight, who introduced Antony to Mike Stoller of Leiber & Stoller fame, one of the most successful songwriting teams of all time
which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. The duo wrote for Elvis Presley amongst others, including songs such as ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘Jailhouse Rock’. Mike Stoller heard Antony sing and offered him a song he wrote for Presley that Elvis never got around to recording. Antony has now recorded the song, called ‘Stay A While’ and this will be released worldwide very soon. Antony counts amongst his friends, Kathy Westmoreland who performed with Presley for 14 years and Joe Esposito who was Elvis Presley’s best friend. Check out antonywolfsonmusic.com for his weekly line up of gigs and shows.
LA SALA BANUS THE GO-TO PLACE FOR FOOTBALLERS AND CELEBRITIES Just hours after playing against Liverpool last week, John Terry headed to Dubai with his wife Toni Poole for a short holiday. From there he flew over to Marbella to continue his vacation before his next game against Sunderland this Sunday. The former England footballer chose to dine in La Sala Banus for two consecutive nights, 19th and 20th May. Terry was extremely pleased with the service and enjoyed the lively atmosphere that the celebrity hotspot is famous for. La Sala Restaurant has truly become, ‘The ultimate social and dining experience,’
and is renowned as one of the busiest restaurants in Andalucía, an accolade successfully retained all year round not only during the traditional summer season. Its unparalleled formula has attracted a mass of international media and confirmed its position as Puerto Banus’s premium hotspot thus welcoming celebrity figures and playing host to an array of television shows and documentaries broadcast worldwide.
