PUBLISHER’S LETTER

A NOD TO THE

Rock Society Marbella published by and produced by: PUBLISHER Andy Clark DESIGNER Constanza Mtz. FEATURES EDITOR Amber O’Shaughnessy

The Costa del Sol is famed for many things – its sunny climate, the wealth of hip bars and restaurants to enjoy from dawn till dusk, the seemingly magnetic pull which attracts the rich and glamorous to its shores. For me, however, one of the best things about living here on the Coast is the view I am afforded every evening of North Africa and Gibraltar. As the days get hotter, the sun sets later and there really is nothing better than watching the sky turn from blue to pink as the silhouette of The Rock darkens on the horizon. In this issue, we bring you all our usual exclusive content including a special interview with the ‘god of flamenco’ himself - Joaquín Cortes - who is returning to Marbella for a two-night engagement at Hotel Puente Romano, as well as a special focus on Gibraltar. After extensive research, we have found that Gibraltar businesses are eager to attract Spanish customers; likewise businesses in Spain want to appeal to Gibraltarian citizens, particularly high-end restaurants and beach clubs (in which we, of course, specialize). It therefore makes sense to incorporate more Gibraltar news, views and gossip into SOCIETY Marbella magazine. We have kicked off with a bang – step aboard the world’s first 5* luxury super-yacht hotel – The Sunborn on page 102, get some expert financial advice on page 20 from the CEO of

Jyske – Gibraltar’s premium bank and turn to page 31 for an exclusive chat with XFactor finalist Rebecca Ferguson ahead of her performance at the Gibraltar Love Festival. Back on the Coast, we speak exclusively to former US Open winner, Michael Campbell who is launching a Golf Academy at the majestic Villa Padierna Hotel. We also spend an afternoon at La Sala by the Sea, which returns bigger and better than ever before, bringing an essence of Thailand to your beach club experience. What better way to pass the weekend than tucking into sticky Pork Skewers whilst listening to the summery sounds of a live sax, strawberry daiquiri in hand? D-wine continues to fascinate and delight all those who walk through its doors and sommelier Julio takes a look at the new wave of modern Riojas which have emerged on the wine market in the last decade in our Wine Feature of the Month on page 120. While other print media publishers are busy interviewing themselves and digging the dirt on each other, we prefer to stick to what we do best bringing the residents of the Costa del Sol and Gibraltar interesting, exclusive, local content. So we invite you to recline on your sun-bed and feast your eyes on this month’s issue! Till next time… Andy Clark

BANKING WITH A PERSONAL TOUCH This month, SOCIETY spoke with Christian Bjørløw, CEO of Jyske bank in Gibraltar, to discuss why their private investment & wealth management services are a cut above the rest.

Tell us what differentiates Jyske bank from other wealth management banks? Many banks offer advice on investment and wealth management, but at Jyske Bank you will have closer personal relations than many would expect from an international bank. Our advice is based on Danish values and adjusted to local conditions. We will be happy to meet with our clients in their homes to offer our suggestions as to what we can do for their finances. In other words, as a client, you will receive personal and dedicated advice as you would from a local bank, yet on the basis of the strong resources characteristic of a large international bank. How do your clients benefit from a more personal service? At Jyske Bank, we do not use call centres, and we have no cumbersome decision-making processes. Instead our clients work with thier personal and competent relationship manager. Working with a relationship manager forms the underlying basis for our cooperation. Clients can contact thier relationship manager directly, and together they are able to make competent and fast decisions. Since we do not offer our employees personal bonus schemes, our clients can be assured of advice to suit their needs. How would you say Jyske bank compares to others in Europe? In 2010 and 2011, CEBS (the committee of European Banking Supervisors) carried out stress tests of the largest banks in Europe. Amongst the 100 banks tested, Jyske Bank passed the tests as the seventh financiallystrongest bank. CEBS will present the results of this year’s test in October.

20

In short, what are the key benefits of banking with Jyske?

Banking with a healthy and solid bank

Wealth management advice which will cover all aspects of your finances

A relationship manager whom you can always contact

Competent advice in consultation with a large number of specialists

Lastly, we do not offer our employees personal bonus schemes – and never did so you can be assured our advice is genuine

Private Banking on your doorstep We are located in the Main Street in Gibraltar; but we want to bring our bank to you. At Jyske Bank, you have a relationship manager, tailor-made solutions and an open and relaxed atmosphere. Feel free to contact us. We’ll be happy to pay you a visit and tell you more.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT We speak exclusively with the famous flamenco dancer Joaquín Cortés who is visiting Hotel Puente Romano this July for a special two night performance

TAKING FLIGHT with

JOAQUÍN CORTÉS By Amber O’Shaughnessy

World renowned flamenco dancer Joaquín Cortés, famously described by model Elle Macpherson as ‘sex on legs’, is returning to his native Andalucia for a special two night performance at Hotel Puente Romano this July. SOCIETY Marbella brings you an exclusive interview with the man who reignited the world’s lust for this fiery style of dancing. At what age did you start dancing? What initially sparked your passion for the craft? When I was 12 I fell in love with ballet and music and nowadays I love everything related to the arts. Where has been your favourite performance to date? Do you have a favourite performance venue? There are many. I especially remember the concert for eight hundred people in Río de Janeiro on Copacabana Beach. It was the same venue where the Rolling Stones had performed. Are you looking forward to performing here in Marbella this summer so close to where you grew up in Cordoba?

24

To me it is a pleasure to be back in Marbella this summer. I have many great memories from here. All my father’s family members are from Málaga and I have spent a lot of time here since I was a kid. You have been quoted saying, “Dancing is my wife! My fair woman” – what did you mean by this? As soon as I discovered the ballet when I was a kid, I felt in love with it. It was love at first sight. Nowadays I am still in love with it. I have always said that it is like my first lady (laughs). What advice would you give to young dancers trying to make it in the industry? I would say, “Never give up on your dreams.”

Why did you decide to set up the Joaquín Cortés Flamenco Ballet Company? Because it was the only way to express my flamenco art and creativity and show it to the world through dance and music: our music and the choreography are original and totally mine. Tell us about experience starring in films. What was it like to work with Almodóvar? It has been a wonderful experience, as I really respect and admire Pedro. He is a very demanding director, yet at the same time he is very funny. How has your style of dance evolved with time? I have always wanted to keep pushing the boundaries in my career. I have

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT always been involved with all the dances that I have been discovering through the years. I really love multiculturalism and that’s the reason why my audience can see a mixture of Arab, soul, flamenco, classic - many different kinds of music. What is the highlight of your professional career to date? Wow! I have so many special amazing experiences, that at this point I cannot think. Performing at the Oscars, the Nobel Peace Awards, the White House, the MTV and Grammy Awards, the Viña del Mar Festival, in huge arenas, at the Roman Coliseum…Definitely having the opportunity to be onstage with such amazing artists as Michael Jackson and Steve Wonder. I could never mention all of them. It is fair to say you have reignited the art of flamenco – why do you think it is important to keep this traditional form of dance alive? I have always tried to contribute to the development of my country’s dance and I have always worked hard to take flamenco and its culture all over the world. I think that I have achieved my goal of popularizing the flamenco dance at all levels.

I love to express myself with the universal language, that is the body.

25

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

I really feel like “the universal gypsy”, because I am always fighting to keep taking and showing my culture all over the world.

You often perform wearing very few clothes - why is this important to you despite sometimes provoking a surprised reaction from flamenco critics?

You have been involved in some high profile relationships – is it difficult to have your personal life scrutinised in the media?

I love to express myself with the universal language, that is the body. I love to express, through my body, the different emotions that every human being has.

Yes. But after all, we have to understand that, if you are a famous person, this is part of life. Generally, I don’t think so. I do prefer that people know me from my professional career rather than my personal relationships. How would you describe one of your shows to somebody who has never seen you live onstage? Live music and dance - a mix of different cultures. It is like an open door to passion, rebellion, love and freedom. Tell us a little bit about your role as EU Ambassador for the Roma. What steps have been taken to change the image of the Roma people? I try to be positive in all my interviews. I support my culture and I always emphasize that I am a gypsy. I really feel like the universal gypsy, because I am always fighting to raise the profile of my culture all over the world.

Boxer has to go on the hunt for the killer before it’s too late.

Bursting with all the elements that make H.M Ward such a popular author, this book will appeal to a wide audience, with its quick-witted humour, highly charged sex scenes and flawed but endearing protagonists. Skylar meets her ultimate adversary in the charming Nick Ferro but how who will come out on top?

TURN ! IT UP

‘Extraordinary’ – Clean Bandit

‘A Sky Full of Stars’ – Coldplay

Hot on the heels of their number one hit single ‘Rather Be’, this young Cambridge-based group returns with another belter. Guest singer Sharna Bass’s unique sounding vocals add a hint of sunshine to this euphoric track.

The third song released from their debut album Ghost Stories, ‘A Sky Full of Stars’ came as a welcome surprise to Coldplay fans due to Avicii’s collaboration on the track. The Swedish DJ’s influence is unmistakeable and makes the song light, airy and dynamic. It seems Chris Martin and Tim Bergling are a match made in musical heaven.

‘West Coast’ – Lana del Rey Lana del Rey possesses an eerily beautiful voice that makes all of her tracks distinctive and instantly recognisable. Critics have labelled this new single from the singer’s third studio album Ultraviolence, ‘hypnotic’ and ‘exquisitely composed’.

30

‘I Will Never Let you Down’ – Rita Ora Written and produced by Calvin Harris, this song went straight in at number one in the UK music charts and rightly so. The single is an up-tempo dance pop song

and the perfect accompaniment to long summer nights.

‘Waves’ – Mr Probz Dutch hip hop artist Mr Probz created an instant hit in this electro track. Initially released last November, Robin Schulz has remixed it to make it sound even more magical.

Feel the Love

The beautiful, talented and eternally humble Rebecca Ferguson will be performing in Gibraltar this month. Nicola McGeorge caught up with the former X Factor star for a quick chat about the upcoming show. In this exclusive interview, the singer talks about her pregnancy, her love of Chanel and how she is looking forward to meeting the Rock’s most famous residents. Did you always want a career in music? Ever since I was a little girl all I wanted to do was sing. I used to write lyrics on tissue paper but I think it was just gibberish (laughs). When did you know you had made it? I would probably say when I seen my first album, Heaven in the shops. It was a good feeling. What are your career highlights? I would say all of it. I’m blessed to be doing the job I love, so I intend to enjoy the whole journey. What made you want to be a part of the Gibraltar Love Festival? It was just a great opportunity - I have heard great things about Gibraltar.

Who would you like to collaborate with? Kings of Leon and, if he was still alive, Otis Redding. How do you deal with the pressure that comes with fame? I have learned to cut the negative people off from my life and surround myself with family. Favourite clothing designers and why? Chanel - I just think the clothes are so classy. Congratulations on the soon-to-be addition to your family. How do you manage to juggle your career and family so well? Thank you. I’m excited and can’t wait! I would say I’m a mother first and then I’m a

singer. I always prioritise my children; they are my world. What’s next for you? Next for me is children’s books. I have always wanted to write them so hopefully they will be published soon. Where do you see yourself in ten years time? That’s a good question but let’s see what God has planned for me. Rebecca Ferguson will be performing at The Gibraltar Love Festival 15th June 2014 Victoria Stadium, Gibraltar gibraltarlovefestival.com

What are you looking forward to seeing in Gibraltar? I have been told about the monkeys - they are rumoured to be very cheeky. What can we expect from you at the show? Energy and good vibes; my band and I like to throw random covers into the set, so a few surprises could be sprung. What inspires you? My children inspire me every day. How did you overcome your confidence issues and what advice would you give to anyone who is in a similar situation? I think I just stopped caring what people thought of me. We only have one life to live and I didn’t plan to live it in fear, so I made the most of it. I would say the same to anyone - don’t live a life of ‘what ifs’. What are you currently listening to on your iPod? I’m listening to Frank Ocean’s channel ORANGE album. Tell us about your album Freedom and how it differs from your debut album? Freedom is for people who are feeling down and need a pick me up. When I wrote it I wanted to inspire and empower people who are feeling low. I would say Heaven was an album of innocence; I was new to the music industry but Freedom is wise. What was it like to duet with John Legend? It was amazing! I have always been a fan of his work.

Cannes Film Festival 2013 Photos ® Instagram

It’s that time of year again when the rich and famous congregate in the South of France in all their finery for the annual Cannes Film Festival. Every year it’s a tale of superyachts, Chopard jewels and flashing paparazzi and 2014 was no exception.

Roberto Cavalli invited the crème de la crème of celebrities aboard his palatial yacht for one hell of a party – Kylie Minogue, Heidi Klum, John Travolta, Justin Bieber and model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley were all present for an evening of decadence. Bieber was seen whispering into the ear of Victoria’s Secret model Barbara Palvin who in turn was caught stroking the Canandian-born singer’s face. The 20-year old Palvin denied the two were dating over a year ago but it seems the couple will have a hard time sticking to this story after photos from the yacht party emerge.

A video was leaked this month showing Solange Knowles attacking her sister’s husband – rapper Jay-Z - in an elevator as the threesome attended the Met Gala in New York. It has recently emerged that Solange flew into the rage after Californian fashion designer Rachel Roy and Jay Z got too close for comfort at the star-studded event. According to the Daily Mail, tension increased in the elevator when Jay-Z announced that he wanted to continue partying alone at Rihanna’s after party, where Solange knew Roy would be present. The hotel employee who leaked the video sold the material for $250,000.

Li-Lo partied hard, as per, at hip nightspot VIP Room. She wore a tiny leather dress and pink polka-dot stilettos, dancing the night away with brother Michael. Meanwhile J-Law’s off-hand rape joke at the Vanity Fair and Armani party in Cannes has caused a storm of negative criticism from even the actress’s biggest fans. Jennifer stated that when she first met Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron, she started screaming and on approach shouted ‘I broke out my rape scream for you!’ Lawrence’s PR team have not yet made comment on the matter. Finally, a whole host of supermodels attended the premier of film The Search with Cara Delevingne leading the way in a stunning strapless gold dress.

Keegan: Mark Wright knows who my Corrie Killer Is! Photos ® Instagram

Michelle Keegan who plays Tina McIntyre in the long running soap Coronation Street, has revealed her soon-to-be-hubby knows who kills her off. Corrie fans are about to be riveted to the screen as the young actress becomes involved in a ‘whodunit’ storyline. Speaking to Phillip and Holly on This Morning, she said, “I haven’t said anything to anyone. Does Mark know? Well he was there when we filmed it. But to be fair, he hasn’t told anyone, he’s been really good.” The pair got engaged last September while holidaying in Dubai.

Kim and Kayne spend the night before their big day at the impressive Palace of Versailles.

Peaches turned up at Courtney Love’s Hotel Room with 500 pills Courtney Love has recently spoken out about the time when Peaches Geldof arrived at her hotel room in LA with a friend carrying 500 pills. Love spoke to Grazia about the incident; she said she “had to physically push Peaches and her friend out the door.” The 49 year-old who has battled heroin herself back in the 90s, said that when she read heroin was involved in the death of Geldof, she “was not shocked. I know Peaches like opiates.” Peaches was tragically found dead in her home earlier this year, the post-mortem inquest found that heroin was ‘likely to have played a role in her death’.

The exchanging of vows took place in the shadow of this 20ft high wall of white roses and peonies which provided intimacy and a stunning focal point for the day.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West married at the end of May in a lavish affair which took place at the stunning 16th century Forte di Belvedere in Florence, Italy. Six hundred guests came together for the mutli-million dollar nupitals, although Jay Z and Beyonce were among the few invitees who did not attend. The celebrations began on the Friday with a decadent party held at the couple’s first choice wedding venue – The Palace of

Versailles. Guests sipped $6000 per bottle champagne as Lana del Rey performed three of Kimye’s favourite songs. Wedding attendees then flew by private jet to Italy the following day for the bridal ceremony and yet more partying. Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli sang as Kim walked down the aisle accompanied by her stepfather, Bruce. The bride wore a delicate, lace gown custom made by

Givenchy and her bridesmaids – sisters Kourtney, Khloe, Kendall and Kylie – each wore a white dress, although these were not matching. After the ceremony, guests feasted on traditional Italian dishes before hitting the dance floor to Kanye’s classic hit ‘All of the Lights’. The day concluded with a magnificent firework display. We wish the couple all the very best!

Linea Directa REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_ of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car.

STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre

on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you.

panish Golf Champion Miguel Angel Jimenez has tied the knot in style. The 50 year-old married his Austrian girlfriend, Susanne Styblo at his local golf course in Torremolinos. Known as ‘The Mechanic’ for his devotion to flashy motors, it wasn’t a suprise to see the happy couple posing for photos against a classic Rolls Royce. Miguel is as well known for his love of red wine, cigars and fast cars as for his glittering golf career. He is still 32nd in the world golf rankings at the age of 50 and if his nuptials weren’t enough to celebrate he just won the Spanish Open at PGA Cataluña for the first time.

British lap-dancing club boss was killed on the first night of his week long Marbella stag party as he tried to walk across the Puerto Banús dual carriageway instead of using the underpass. Billy Peterkin, 59, from Glasgow was killed when he tried to scale a dual carriageway road barrier on the central reservation. The driver of the BMW, a 40-year-old from northern Spain who was holidaying in the area, passed a breath and drugs test and was not arrested. Billy and his fiancée Emma were due to get married in Tenerife a few weeks later. Billy’s funeral at Bothwell Parish Church was attended by comedian Andy Cameron and Rangers boss Ally McCoist and the service included a touching performance from X-Factor star Nicholas McDonald.

isgraced PR guru Max Clifford, who was regularly seen in Marbella has been sentenced to eight years in prison, for eight charges of indecent assault. In one alleged assault, Clifford is said to have forced a 12-year-old girl to touch him in a jacuzzi while on holiday in Marbella after befriending her parents. The celebrity PR owns a sprawling villa in a gated-estate in the Spanish hills of Nueva Andalucia. His highest profile clients, X Factor boss Simon Cowell and Dragons’ Den star, Theo Paphitis have severed ties with him. Cowell, who has been personally represented by Clifford for more than a decade, sacked his agent hours after the guilty verdicts were delivered. His four-year marriage has also ended and papers reveal the relationship broke down before his arrest for sex offences. Jo Clifford, his former PA, was granted a decree nisi on the grounds of his mysterious “unreasonable behaviour”, which she said took place four months before his arrest.

In a two-phase project The Caleta Hotel plans to build a new five-star hotel to the north of its existing structure, as well as create five premium houses and build a 50 apartment residential block to the south. The hotel also plans to transform the exterior of the existing hotel to conform to the complex’s new look. Franco Ostuni, general manager of the Caleta Hotel for 15 years, told SOCIETY MAGAZINE that this will be the biggest project Gibraltar has seen for many years and that the Callaghan family are “totally committed” to it.

EFA President Michel Platini recently visited Gibraltar to attend the highly anticipated Rock Cup Final. Gibraltar’s new 5* floating super yacht hotel, The Sunborn, was home to the UEFA president for the weekend. During his visit, Platini is said to have visited the proposed site for the new stadium at Europa Point. He also met with Chief Executive of the Gibraltar Football Association, Dennis Beiso who gave him a tour of Gibraltar’s various football clubs and facilities. The Rock Cup final saw the historic Victoria Stadium packed full to the brim with die-hard fans from Lincoln Red Imps FC and College Europa FC. After one goal scored within the last minutes of the match, Lincoln triumphed and was presented with the Rock Cup Trophy by Platini himself.

This past month has seen a touch of glamour returning to the Coast with a host of celebs deciding to pay us a visit

Sala before dancing the night away at Aqwa Mist and, if we were in any doubt about whether she was having a good time, she tweeted. “Having so much fun @aqwamist thanks for looking after me.”

Gordon Ramsey has started filming his show ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ in Fuengirola. The BAFTA-winning show will see the new series set in Spain where a variety of restaurants, hotels and B&Bs will get like some help from the Michelin star chef, whether they like it or not. We can’t wait to see what the foul-mouthed chef has to say to some of the struggling expat restaurant owners on the Coast. We can certainly think of a few dives round here that need a good kick up the bum from Mr Ramsey.

DJ Ironik’s whose admirers include Tom Cruise and Elton John rocked Dusk Night Club in Gibraltar before heading to Marbella on a chill out cruise (and slept through most of it.) We think he needs a few tips from Sir Elton on how celebs are meant to party.

Pop star Diana Vickers chose Marbella for her girlie holiday. Not wanting to leave her fans out, the X Factor star tweeted and Instagramed most of her trip. After chilling out on the beach, she headed for a slap up meal at La

English actress Chelsee Healey was seen looking a little worse for wear and partying with friends at the Sisu Boutique Hotel Pool party in Puerto Banús. The former Strictly Come Dancing and Waterloo Road star is on a short break before she starts filming her new role as the sexy administrator in the hit BBC TV series, Casualty. Chelsee spent most of the afternoon canoodling with a mystery man. The couple made repeated visits to their room and were spotted kissing on their balcony overlooking the party.

Marvin Humes, Aston Merrygold and Oritse Williams, accompanied ex JLS band mate JB Gills and 17 other lads on his stag party weekend in Marbella. Not one to miss out on a party, the girls from Golden Tarts joined the boys at Sisu Boutique Hotel pool party and then Lauren and Amy - aka The Chocmeister - were invited to a BBQ at the lads’ villa before hitting Sleek Nightclub, Pangea and Tibu. We managed to squeeze out of Amy that they were really nice bunch of boys, friendly and down to earth and amazing dancers. It’s nice to see the boys are still such great mates even though the band has split up.

Manchester United football player Marouane Fellaini was spotted enjoying a break from footie at the Ocean Club Beach Club. However his trip turned slightly sour Manchester United’s £27.5m signing after being chased by drunken British yobs. According to The Sun the 25-year-old was enjoying a late-night drink with his brother and two friends at the Seven Bar in Puerto Banús when they were hassled by a couple of tourists.

Hollyoaks star Stephanie Waring took a sunshine break to Spain with her cast members, Jennifer Metcalfe and Stephanie Davis. She recently split from her partner and father of her child, Dan Hooper after an alleged affair with Coronation Street actress, Kym Marsh. The trio was seen at The Ocean Club Champagne Spray party in Puerto Banús.

“Fellaini was minding his own business when some drunk tourists started hassling him,” a waiter told The Sun. “Fellaini and his friends asked them politely to leave. There was a little bit of pushing and shoving going on and when it looked like it was going to kick off, Fellaini and his brother made a run for it and we took them to an area above the bar out of harm’s way. He was very grateful and friendly but a bit shaken.”

THE BOLD and The Beautiful Want strong, on-trend brows like Cara Delevingne? Learn how to get statement eyebrows with this brow-tastic guide

L

ong gone are the days of ultra skinny, overly waxed eyebrows (think Pamela Anderson in her Baywatch days). From French fashionista Carine Roitfeld to Hollywood actress Jennifer Connolly, you can’t open a magazine, or turn a street corner for that matter, without seeing big, beautiful brows staring back. Full, groomed eyebrows are flattering and youthful, can add structure to the face, make you look polished and tie the whole look together. However, not everyone can take a bold brow; for example, if you have a petite face or if your brows are close to your eyes, a strong brow will not be for you. “When your brows are close to your eyes, it can close them off and make your eyes seem even smaller,” explains HD brow guru Amy Carter from Golden Tarts. “The shape of your brows completely depends on the shape of your face. For example the trend at the moment is for sharp lines, straight edges and a higher arch, but if you have a round face, this style won’t work for you. You need a softer, rounder arch.” Ready to start your bold brow journey? First step is to visit a brow expert. If you want to venture into a statement strong brow, you may want first to see an aesthetician, who can set you on the right path and help you to determine the right shape. “It is difficult to shape your brows yourself or see the shape that they should be,” Amy points out. ”With HD Brows you can readjust the shape of the brow, creating the ideal shape for you, rather than just working with what you have.” One thing that you have to accept is that growing in fuller brows will take time. Been tweezing your brows?

42

Sadly, you won’t be able to rock a bold brow anytime soon. If you’re starting from scratch it can take anything from three to six months to grow in your brows, but the end result is worth it. AND, if you are an eyebrow virgin, Amy has the following advice: “For my first timers I always start off with a lighter tint colour and a softer shape than I would usually create. It’s easier to go over the colour and darken it, rather than go full on straight away and have the client screaming they look like Groucho Marx” Now you have the shape, here is how to finish them off. For a more natural look use an eye shadow that is one shade darker than your hair

colour. Applying eye shadow - such as Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo - to the brow area using a slanted brow brush is a great way to shape and give your face some drama without looking overly made up. If you want a stronger look for the evening, switch to a pencil such as the MAC Cosmetics Eyebrow pencil (great for filling in gaps). To make them look even more sculpted, use a concealer and outline outside the brows and blend it out. Finish with a highlighter on the brow bone such as Benefit Highbeam. And if that hasn’t sold it to you, a properly shaped eyebrow is like an instant facelift and can knock about ten years off you. Yep, I bet you raised a brow to that, didn’t you?

Top Tips * Remember, your brows should be sisters, not twins. Don’t struggle to try and make them exactly the same, as you’ll never achieve it; no-one’s brows are 100 per cent symmetrical. * Tweeze after your shower, as warm water opens the follicles and softens hairs, helping them to slip out more easily. * Opt for a sharp, slanted pair of tweezers. Unlike pointy versions, they grab tiny strays quickly and won’t pinch your skin along with the hairs. We love Tweezermans. * Always use a regular mirror and avoid magnifying mirrors. The up-close view encourages overtweezing.

* The front of the brow should align with the upper bridge of your nose. * Your arch ought to peak just above the iris of your eye, and then continue out until the brow ends at a forty-five degree angle from the outside of your eye. * Use a cottonwool ball to apply witch hazel or a very gentle moisturizer to soothe the skin that might be irritated around your brows. * If you change your hair colour by more than two shades, you should alter your brow colour too, but only subtly.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

A VIEW INTO TREATMENT AT

Treatment at Cortijo Care is individualised for every single person that comes into our hospital. Being able to offer outpatient day care and four-stage inpatient treatments allows the team to tailor a person’s needs and their stage of readiness for change. Recovery can start at any stage at Cortijo Care. If a person feels scared by the idea of entering full treatment for full recovery, that’s okay. As a team we can help either the sufferer and/or the family to start the process. Thinking about ‘starting to stop’ becomes a very important part of a person’s willingness and desire for change.

Our therapy structure is moulded to what people need when they are with us, from creative treatment, music therapy and process work to educational therapy, yoga and meditation. Animal assisted support by the clinic’s dog (BEAR) and many more types of psychotherapy are also available to assist. The 12 steps are offered on individual need.

Gemma Wood, is the Head of Counselling & Psychotherapy at the Medical and Psychological clinic, Cortijo Care, based in San Pedro.

Roots?

WHO SAID ARE FOR COVERING UP By Zoe Woods

It started with highlights, moved on to ombre, and now... splashlights! It has been seen on catwalks from New York to Paris, Milan and London. This amazing eye catching colour has evolved from ombre, which has been the main talking point of the colour industry for more than six years, and it is about time we moved on. Splashlights by Redken is designed to give an illusion of light through the hair, to add high definition and shine. Whether it is applied across the hair to look dramatic or subtly submerged into the hair for a more blended soft look, the choice is yours.

GRAZIA ‘Is that a halo on your head? Splashlights are set to be the new ombre!’ Mail Online: ‘How angelic looking Splashlights are set to be THE hot hair trend’ Allure ‘Splashlights: The hottest hair colour trend of 2014’

The gorgeous Jessica Biel was one the first celebrities spotted rocking this look. She had a band of light woven through the mid-lengths - ideal if you want a natural look, but Splashlights isn’t only for long hair; it also looks amazing on short hair, as it accentuates facial contours. Splashlight is versatile and can be pulled off by just about any texture and length, I love it on curly and wavy hair too because it adds subtle dimension. If you

Zoe Woods, head technician and owner of Wood Salon

want to dip your toe into this trend, a shimmer of brilliance at the fringe is the perfect for drawing attention to eyes and cheekbones. If you are a little more darling, then you can opt for colour with an edge. A bold band of colour at the mid-lengths is great for framing the face with precise colour placement. What I like most about Spashlights is that is truly a bespoke colour treatment; each client leaves our salon with a customized colour created especially for them. It is not just your hair that we take into consideration, but also your face shape, skin tone and personal style, before we create a colour which works perfectly for you. This look is all about creating a different movement of colour through the hair. Pop down and see us at Woods Salon and we will light up your style with a splash of colour. Million Dollar Smile Tooth jewellery, the latest body art trend has hit Marbella and is now available at Marbella’s Cosmetic Dental Clinic.

F

orget tattoos and piercings, the new craze that is sweeping across the world is - tooth jewellery. Loved by celebs, tooth jewellery’s classic designs are an elegant complement to standard jewellery. When placed on the tooth they create a distinctive expression of one’s individuality. “At Marbella’s Cosmetic Dental Clinic we use Merbia Sparkle tooth jewellery,” explains dental surgeon, Dr. Steinruck. “They are safe and leave no permanent mark. The bonding procedure leaves the tooth intact and allows for easy removal. Merbia Sparkles are made of real gold or white gold set with real diamonds, making them totally non-toxic and maintenance free.” The gold setting is made with a slightly curved back to follow the shape of the tooth. A bonding procedure using etch, bond and flow would last several years, or until polished off. The jewellery is manufactured with the highest quality materials and specifically designed for dental use. The wearer may feel the Sparkles during the first few days of attachment. However they are small and flat, designed to be

unobtrusive for the wearer. There will also be no trouble when eating or having teeth professionally cleaned. The procedure of fixing teeth jewellery is very simple and usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes. There is no drilling involved, so the jewel does not damage tooth and there are no side effects. It can be easily removed without any damage to the tooth structure. Merbia Sparkles are surfaced with a special coat to make them shine like diamonds and add zing to your smile! Is the jewellery for males or females? Both – there are many different designs which appeal to everyone. Does The Application Procedure Hurt? NO! The procedure is similar to placing an orthodontic bracket on a tooth. There is no drilling involved and the procedure is completely painless. How long will the jewellery stay on my tooth? The tooth jewellery can last on your tooth indefinitely or for as long as you want it.

Will the tooth jewellery harm my tooth? When properly placed by a dentist, the tooth jewellery will not damage or harm your tooth in any way. Tooth jewellery should only be applied to natural teeth. How do i remove the tooth jewellery when i no longer want it? If you would like to remove your tooth jewellery it can be taken off by a dentist at any time. How much does it cost? Prices vary from design to design; ask your dentist for more information Now that really is something to smile about For more information please contact: Tel: (+34) 952 90 71 73 marbelladentalart.com

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Nature’s Way This month we interview Amanda Gedeon, owner of the delicious Bellaria. Why is organic living important to you? It’s how it should be. What need is there to be eating food covered in pesticides, filled with antibiotics and pumped with hormones?. It’s not about making a statement. It’s not a culture and it most definitely should NOT be a luxury. It’s food, clean, healthy and good for you. Food should nurture you not hurt you. How did your business get started? Bellaria means dessert in Latin. When Bellaria first started it was a bakery. I used to make this incredible carrot cake using 100 per cent natural wholegrain ingredients which a friend of mine pushed me to sell - he was convinced it would be successful. So we went into business. I developed a number of other recipes which went down just as well and things began to grow. With Bellaria going I started to learn a lot about what was in our food and was blown away. When you start to delve deep you learn things that force you to make changes. My lifestyle changed, and that was reflected in Bellaria’s output. Slowly things disappeared from the kitchen and were replaced by incredible substitutes. I gradually changed from conventional to organic and became extremely comfortable avoiding all sorts of allergens: dairy, gluten, sugar, meat, eggs...and here we are today. How would you describe Bellaria? How many of you have a friend that’s vegan/vegetarian/very health orientated and wants to go eat at this place which you HATE because a) there’s nothing there you like to eat, b) it’s full of weird tree huggers, c) it’s dark and uncomfortable, and d) the lecture you’re going to get whilst there makes seeing your mother drunk in a push-up bra and mini skirt feel like a dream come true? I love Bellaria for its subtleties. It’s organic, but you don’t hear about it - you see and taste it. There’s a huge selection of vegan options, but you can have a chicken salad, quesadilla or burger too. There are amazing green juices (kale included!) loaded with super foods, but you’ll also find beers, wines and soft drinks. If you want organic beers, wines and soft drinks, we have them too - but you’re not forced to have them. You have options, you have choices, and it’s you that takes them, not us. Which are your most popular dishes? Our organic, gluten-free falafels are a huge hit as is the Thai sweet potato

48

burger with peanut sauce. Breakfasts are pretty memorable too: poached organic eggs on beautiful, wholegrain seeded organic toast; home made muesli: wheat free and sugar free. I remember when we launched our sandwich range the grilled chicken and pesto ciabatta was particularly well received. Our house burger does well too. Locally sourced beef, no hormones to plump it up, no rubbish inside it. Just beef - and a good chunk of it too. You are known for your amazing desserts. Tell us more... Ah yes, the cakes. Double baked chocolate mousse cake (gluten free), courgette and lime cake (this one cannot be described, you just have to try it). There’s no white sugar in our kitchen. I even go so far as not having brown sugar. I only bake with Panela, raw, organic cane sugar. It’s full of vitamins and minerals and is so much better for you. We have desserts for everyone: raw, vegan, coeliacs, diabetics, etc. Everyone gets cake at Bellaria! Our raw chocolates are an incredible hit. I’m

lucky to work with the best raw food chef (and person) I have ever come across - what she is able to do with raw chocolate is mind blowing. Tell us about your shop/products/sister business? As well as the café and bakery we have our own little eco shop. Alongside Bellaria I own part of an import and distribution company - Ekotrade. Ekotrade sources and supplies nationwide (and to a few other countries in Europe) organic, natural, raw and vegan products. What is next for you? Aside from nurturing and growing Bellaria I am hugely excited about a project we are developing. We are setting up a non-profit association dedicated to fomenting organic food in schools, hospitals, residential homes and nurseries. Kids and sick people need to be nurtured, so it’s baffling to me why they are not already being given organic food. There’s a lot of bureaucracy to fight, a lot of red tape to deal with, a lot of time to spend headbutting walls, I’m sure! But that’s the next step for me and I’m more than happy to have anyone interested jump on board. We schedule monthly meetings in Bellaria through Marbella Organic Meet Up (look for us on www.meetup.com) feel free to join us next time!

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

LVL Lashes – Minimum Fuss, Maximum ‘Wow Factor’ now available at Golden Tarts.

LVL Lashes has created a storm

in the beauty world by straightening rather than curling your natural lashes. A wide-awake look that is completely natural and all yours! No false lashes, just stunning length, volume and lift to your natural lash. Who wouldn’t love that?! LVL Lashes is an outstanding treatment that has revolutionised traditional lash perming by lifting and straightening lashes rather than curling them - which can actually make the lashes appear shorter. The treatment has been developed by the experts at Nouveau Lashes and is perfect for those of us with straight lashes, or for anyone who can’t get a lift to hold with eyelash curlers. It is also ideal for the summer months when you want maximum impact with minimum upkeep and fuss. The LVL Lash effect lasts for the life of your lashes, so up to six weeks. “LVL uses the latest techniques and products to bring lash lifting into the 21st century. Traditionally clients who have wanted longer looking natural lashes have had to rely on lash extensions - LVL is a fantastic alternative for the natural lash and fits in perfectly with our other treatments at the salon,” explains Golden Tarts owner, Sarah - AKA Golden Tart. One of the UK’s best-known makeup artists, Lisa Eldridge loves LVL Lashes so much she has featured a video of her having the treatment done on her website: “This treatment is perfect for anyone who has incredibly straight lashes, or for anyone who just wants to appear more alert and wide awake without using eyelash curlers and mascara every morning,” she said.

What are LVL lashes? LVL stands for length, volume and lift. Instead of applying false eyelashes or using a traditional round rod to curl the ends as a classic perm would, this completely new technique uses a radical, new gel formulation and a silicon shield to lift the eyelashes from the roots. The result is breathtaking longer lashes and wide sparkly eyes. This treatment process is designed to be as kind as possible to natural lashes, whilst at the same time giving an incredible, but also natural result: The Lifting Balm and Volumising Fix have greatly advanced and are now combined in this formula. Together they now achieve the perfect root lift rather than a curl. These products have been developed to cause the minimum amount of damage to the lashes, ensuring they remain in good condition. Moisturising Serum. This is applied to the lashes after the tint, this serum moisturises and replenishes the lashes at the end of the treatment, allowing the shields that create the lift to be removed easily with no drag or pull on the natural lashes.

So what did I think about LVL? Well my lashes are long, but blonde and very straight, so my Shu Uemura lash curler is my best friend, unless I am going to the beach and then they are no help at all. So with the summer upon us I was very excited to try out this treatment. After settling me into the beauty room, therapist Fiona Halpin asked me how I would like my lashes, to which I answered, “As curled up and dark as possible.” I normally curl my lashes, apply mascara and then curl again, so you get the picture. This apparently meant that I needed the small silicon shield, as they come in different sizes. My lashes were then rolled onto the shields and a gel formula was applied to the base of the lashes. I was surprised to find the treatment very relaxing and not painful at all. I was half asleep when Fiona applied a dark tint to give the lashes a fuller look, followed by a revitaliser to help condition them. When she handed me the mirror my eyelashes were thick and black and astonishingly full of volume. I always have mascara or an eyelash curler to hand, but now I don’t need it. I have wonderfully curly lashes and my makeup bag is nowhere in sight.

ALL ABOARD FOR GIBRALTAR RUNWAY 2014 Runway 2014 descended on Gibraltar for another year of showcasing new local talent, international designers and top models. The weekend commenced with an exclusive champagne reception on the upper deck of The Sunborn Hotel where we chatted to talented designers such as Paul Perez, Hasan Hejazi and Michael Pattison whilst watching the sun set over the Rock. The following day, Tercenetary Hall was transformed into a hub of activity, with an impressive catwalk, pop-up bars, boutiques and beauty stations including the lovely Aphrodite Beauty, which was offering wonderful beauty treatments to get us in the mood. After an evening of incredible fashion shows, we danced the night away to the sounds of the resident DJ... Roll on Runway 2015’!

The newly refurbished Plaza Beach was unveiled last month as their summer launch party kicked off the start of the holiday season in style. Champagne was sprayed and mojitos flowed as the resident DJs supplied the glamorous clientele with party anthems and chill out grooves that would put even the biggest parties in Ibiza to shame. If this is a sign of things to come, Plaza Beach will no doubt enjoy their biggest summer yet.

ARABIAN NIGHTS The Courtyard played the perfect host for the 2014 Gala Dinner of the Marbella Toastmasters Club. There was a Moorish theme for the evening which featured belly dancers, traditional Arabian fare and sweet mint tea. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Toastmasters event without a few ‘Table Topics’ thrown into the mix and as usual speeches were humorous, concise and caught everyone’s interest. The Courtyard is available for weddings and other special occasions but advance booking is highly recommended since the venue has already confirmed many evens for 2014/15.

Organising your commercial space is very important to achieve the image you want to present to your clients. However, it is also important to make it a comfortable and inspiring space in which to work. The atmosphere we create can improve how we work and how we feel and thus enhance our productivity. It’s important to have a tidy desk, so make sure you have plenty of easily accessible storage. Here are some ideas!

In Cube’s Bridge configuration, the modular cabinets create a border to the corridor and adjacent workstations. The continuation of the desk top into the open shelf of the storage element creates additional protected individual work areas and private storage surfaces. This arrangement, which evokes cockpit design, satisfies the demand for privacy and acoustic screening. Telephone calls can be made with relatively little disruption. Drawers instead of pedestals create leg space under the entire desk top. Optional mounted shelves provide additional surfaces that are directly accessible.

Varier is known for its designs for a healthier sitting experience and its chair designs are based on the philosophy that our body was meant to move.

I know we’re not meant to be sleeping at work, but this is fabulous: Gravity, the only recliner to offer zero gravity comfort! For those who want to take a five minute break and put their feet up, this is the way to go. It encompasses pendulum movement, whole seat recline and open angle.

Hitting the nail firmly on the head this company states, “Life has become a sitting marathon. When more and more people spend a large portion of their day sitting, why should they be forced to sit still? Active Sitting embodies the philosophy of healthy, intelligent seating that follows the body’s natural movements. Our chairs tilt, turn and lock exactly in the position you want to be in and keeps your body strong and healthy.” So here are a few of their very sharp designs.

The Boat that Rocks FLOATING LUXURY IN GIBRALTAR By Suzannah Bath

Nature reserves teaming with wildlife, moon-shaped bays and ancient limestone caves; this small corner of Anglo-influenced heaven has attractions aplenty - and a brand new five-star floating hotel from which to enjoy them.

102

Caving is a novel introduction to a new territory. As I’m handed a rope to slide down a rock face towards an ominous looking landing spot, I try to recall what inspired this intrepid adventure. “We’re 300 metres inside the rock now, do you want to go further?” asks Carl, our guide. He points towards a gap between two large rocks. The simple answer would be no, but I’m determined to discover the beauty of Lower St. Michael’s Cave for myself. “Yes” I stutter breathlessly. Carl looks surprised as he tightens the strap on his safety helmet: “Okay, on we go”. Next thing I know we’re on all fours climbing awkwardly towards an opening emitting flashes of colour and light. With a sharp tug, Carl brings me to my feet and what lies in front of me takes my breath away. Stalactites hanging from the ceiling like murano glass chandeliers in a thousand shades of gold, pools of water at the base of ornate stalagmites that stand like flash frozen fireworks in full

splendour, behind which an incredible lake, still as a marble statue, stretches almost 40 metres across the atrium. The urge to escape is instantly replaced by an overwhelming sense of serenity that is undeniably present in this site of natural beauty. All this lies deep inside the historic rock that constitutes the British territory of Gibraltar. St Michael’s Cave is just one of many unique experiences that can be had on The Rock. A safe destination for UK travellers, with all the riches of southern Spain and North Africa only a short distance away, Gibraltar has much to offer: established nature reserves and botanical gardens, stunning panoramic vistas from the summit of the 426 metre Rock, safe beaches with watersports, ancient limestone caves, plus music and cultural events. It’s also a convenient base from which to explore the southern Spanish region of Andalusia, home to

stunning cities such as Seville, Córdoba and Granada. Plus with over 300 days of sunshine, VAT-free shopping, relaxed bars and restaurants and some of the friendliest locals anywhere in the world, Gibraltar makes an excellent location for a weekend getaway. It is no surprise therefore, that this small patch of British overseas territory is much in demand with tourists and business owners alike. Supply however, is notably overwhelmed by demand in the Gibraltarian real estate market, as the Rock is but one small stretch of land surrounded by water. Thus, the only way to embark on a largescale property project on The Rock is by land reclamation, which proves a tricky affair with the current political situation between Gibraltar and Spain. This conundrum did not go unnoticed by Finnish yacht hotel developer, Hans Niemi, whose latest venture, the

103

Sunborn, recently opened its doors in Gibraltar’s desirable western quarter, Ocean Village. Neimi is head of the Helsinki-based property development and investment company, the Sunborn Group, which pioneered the concept of the floating hotel in 1998. Yacht hotels are particularly desirable in locations where further land-based development is impractical or forbidden, making Gibraltar the perfect mooring spot for the company’s first five-star addition to their fleet. Lack of land holds significant advantage for hoteliers in Gibraltar. “There are few big-brand hotels here,” I am told by the Sunborn’s general manager, Olivier Six. What this means is that Gibraltar’s hotels are more individual, visibly invested with the personality – perhaps eccentricity of their owners. The Sunborn continues this trend, harbouring a unique aesthetic design created by a high-end Finnish interior design house. A short trip to the Sunborn leaves no doubt that there has been any expense spared in all aspects of its build and finish. This €150 million yacht measures 142-metres and comprises 189 beautifully appointed rooms, together with conference and

104

banqueting suites, bars, a cocktail lounge and fine-dining restaurants alongside a swimming pool, spa, sundeck and even a ballroom. If this wasn’t enough, plans are in the making for an ultra-exclusive casino to be opened in the hotel later this year. A stay aboard Sunborn Gibraltar offers visitors a rare treat. Inside, the yacht provides all the quality and comfort of a top hotel. Suites are light, spacious and luxurious with views of the Rock, sea and marina, whilst public areas are outstanding. To enable guests to make the most of the amazing vistas, each room features sliding wall-to-wall floorto-ceiling picture windows which flood the rooms with light and, in most cases, open on to a private balcony or terrace area. Elegant, contemporary fabrics and furnishings are used throughout all guest rooms, with bespoke storage and bathroom fittings designed to create a fabulous five-star finish. If you’re looking to take things to the next level, the hotel’s Super Yacht Penthouse Suites represent the ultimate in super yacht luxury. These opulent living spaces with impressive 50-74m² accommodations occupy prime sunset and sea-facing

positions on the fourth, fifth and sixth decks, with extensive private terraces with outdoor furniture and sun-loungers, plus panoramic sea and marina views. They take the pursuit of luxury to its logical conclusion and have already been of interest to stars such as Rihanna, The Script and James Arthur. Naturally, service is second to none on board. Yacht staff are on hand to provide personal and professional assistance - day or night - while a full concierge service is available to help guests with taxi, theatre and restaurant bookings. Five-star standards are further upheld by the hotel’s culinary team: the Sky Restaurant’s skilled international chefs make creative use of the best ingredients to provide signature dishes that change with the seasons. Diners can expect mouth-watering Mediterranean specialities prepared with passion and zest by the restaurant’s Michelin-starred head chef. It features an impressive focal point, a retractable roof which, on a clear night. opens up to showcase the stars. It also boasts wall-to-wall concertina glass doors, which opens both sides of the restaurant to the beautiful marina views, allowing guests

to enjoy alfresco dining all year round. Pre-dinner drinks can be enjoyed in the hotel’s Sky Bar, situated on the yacht’s top deck; this bar benefits from some of the best views in Gibraltar. The Sapphire Bar can be found below deck and is exactly what a top-notch cocktail bar should be. The coolly glamorous interior invites indulgence with sumptuous furnishings and a relaxed atmosphere. The fact that the head mixologist hails from the W Hotel Group, world renowned for their cocktails, makes a visit to Sapphire an absolute must whilst staying on board. Sunborn Gibraltar makes an equally unforgettable location for corporate and private events. The yacht’s extensive and highly adaptable conference suite provides 675m2 of space with a choice of flexible configuration options and a total capacity of up to 600 people. The soaring double-height ballroom can accommodate large and small parties alike and creates a dramatic setting for special occasions. There’s no question that the Sunborn provides a unique luxury experience that is hard to beat. The hotel expertly combines the high value associated with luxury yachts with a modern fivestar hotel atmosphere. This, fused with Gibraltar’s numerous attractions, makes a weekend stay on board an essential trip for anybody looking for something slightly different. Neimi’s vision and the fourth addition to their fleet of yacht hotels has already established itself as a new landmark in Gibraltar, one of the most idyllic locations in southern Spain. Rooms start from £350 a night. sunborngibraltar.com

Cambo’s ACADEMY STATE OF THE ART COACHING CLINIC OPENS AT VILLA PADIERNA

Interview by Amber O’Shaughnessy / Images by gettyimages.com As US Open winner Michael Campbell prepares to open his very own golf academy at Villa Padierna, Society caught up with the popular champion - known to his friends as Cambo - and learned a few things about this five-star addition to one of the Coast’s landmark hotels.

106

You say that golf saved your life, what did you mean by this? Where do I start? I come from very humble beginnings, I lived in a poor community and both my parents had two jobs each to try and raise enough money for us to live. I started to play golf aged eight, not knowing that the sport would later change the course of my life. Throughout my teenage years I made the inevitable silly mistakes but golf was always there to help me channel my life in a positive direction. Of my two closest friends at the time, one ended up in prison and the other is addicted to drugs. I am pretty sure that I would have gone down a similar road had it not been for the golf. Your Mum vetoed your dream of playing rugby and one day joining the All Blacks. If you could have your time again, would you choose golf or rugby and why? In a word – golf. Golf has and always will be my passion. For me, it was never about the financial rewards; I just did the one thing I really loved. Plus, I’m a

realist – I knew I wasn’t good enough to be an All Black, very few people are!

You received a letter from Jack Nicklaus. Can you share what he wrote?

What have been the highlights of your career?

He congratulated me on winning the US Open and told me, “Now you have a responsibility to the game.” I’d like to think I haven’t let him down.

2005 was the golden year for me. I won the US open in June and then the World Match Play Championship in September. Winning both titles in the same year was a very special achievement because only four other golfers have ever done this. Did it feel extra special winning the US Open, beating Tiger Woods? Absolutely, but also beating Retief Goosen was a real achievement. Goosen at the time was the best player in the world, having won the US open in 2001 and 2004. There are not many times when you can say you’ve beaten the best player in the world! The last nine holes of the 2005 Open were pretty intense but such great fun. I remember thinking, “Come on Michael! This is your opportunity to shine.”

You have Scottish blood, does this make it extra special when you play there? Which course do you enjoy playing the most in Scotland? Yes, I love to play in Scotland. My favourite course without a shadow of a doubt is St. Andrews. There really is nothing better. Apart from Villa Padierna of course, which is your favourite course in Spain? Golfers are spoilt for choice down here on the Costa del Golf but I do love to play at Valderrama. Unfortunately you won’t be taking part in the US Open this year but who are you backing to win? I would say Justin Rose has a good

107

chance and Jordan Speith is definitely one to watch. Tell us about the Villa Padierna Golf Academy. The Golf Academy caters for every possible golfing need. We have a great team working there, most notably Steven Palmer and Daniel Williams, who have over thirty years of experience in the golf industry and are fully qualified through the British PGA in coaching, golf specific fitness training, custom club fitting and repairs and golf psychology. I will also be teaching myself occasionally. I set up this academy because over the years, I’ve accumulated so much information, tips, pieces of advice and this is one way to give something back. Ever since that letter from Jack Nicklaus telling me about my responsibility to the game, I have tried to motivate and encourage aspiring young golfers. You are very excited about the Trackman System, what is this? The Trackman System gives a golfer all the facts and figures from their play such as aim of the tack and clubber’s speed. I find that people tend to be visual, they like to see figures so this tracking system will hopefully help people to improve their golfing ability when they are faced with all the stats. The Trackman System will be fully operational from September. You have achieved so much what is next for you? I want to get back to playing golf again. I haven’t played for six months now. The great thing about golf is there’s no age

108

limit - take Jim Furyk as an example; he is 44 and just came so close to winning the 2012 US Open. I’m 45, which in golfing terms is not old. The challenge of playing the game will always be there. It’s just having belief in your ability and the confidence to know where the bad shot is. I’ve still got the passion. The Villa Padierna Michael Campbell Golf Academy had its Soft Opening last month but will be fully operational in September. We wish Michael and his team all the very best in this new and exciting project. Villapadiernapalacehotel.com/golf

hose over 50 years old will tell you that the world in general was a kinder place 40 years ago. We may have had the odd oil crisis or two, but there was a lot less regulation, road cars were quite loud, and racing cars were very loud! Just how loud they were was brought home to us when the flat-nose Porsche 935/77, No 41 that took victory in the 1977 24 Hours of Le Mans, driven by Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass, fired up in the pit lane at Hockenheim as the sun slowly burned through the early morning autumn mist. The whine of the mechanical fuel pump was followed by a slow churn of the starter motor and then a massive

‘whap’ and a roar as the nearly unsilenced 630hp turbocharged flat-six burst into life, the driver then blipping the throttle to keep it from stalling. Up to that point we had been quietly admiring the line-up of historic Porsche Le Mans winners and chatting with some of the brave and talented men who had piloted them to glorious victories in their heyday. The drivers are the legendary Hans Herrmann, Jürgen Barth, Richard Attwood, Manfred Jantke, Manfred Schurti and Gijs van Lennep, all familiar names to Porsche motorsport fans. These heroes, who stood on the podium after finishing first in the

Championship, whose highlight is the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“No ABS, no ESP, no traction control,” Hans Herrmann said to me. “These are totally analogue cars, and once the mechanics had them set up properly, it was purely down to the drivers and luck!”

The soft spoken but steely eyed Timo won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Audi in 2010, and has also won the 2008 12 Hours of Sebring, and was overall winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2003. His team mates this season are Mark Webber, Romain Dumas, Neel Jani, Marc Leib and Brendon hartley.

Today however, the old heroes are staying out of their cars, and the taxi rides in the 935/77 are being conducted by 32-year-old Timo Bernhard, one of the world-class drivers chosen by Porsche to pilot their two brand new 919 hybrid LMP1 racecars in the 2014 FIA World Endurance

Back to the pit lane, and it is my turn to ride shotgun in the 935/77 with Timo. When he fires up the motor, the naked cabin acts like an amplifier, and I am immediately happy that the helmet filters a substantial portion of the big decibel count from my sensitive eardrums. Driving this car at high revs

TORQUE TALK for a two-hour stint at Le Mans must have been deafening. Even as the car grumbles its way down the pit lane, I can tell that the old ignition and mechanical fuel injection are imprecise instruments. Add the massive turbocharger with its legendary lag into the mix and you have a racecar that requires understanding and a deft use of the controls to tame, let alone master. However, despite being a young driver used to modern racecars with their fully mapped ignition and fuelling and therefore relatively civilised behaviour, I Timo has clearly developed the knack, and has the measure of this recalcitrant beast. With the boost spooling up, I feel the hit of torque in the back and even though Timo is not using all the revs, we are flung from the pit lane exit towards the sharp right hand turn into the Querspange, the medium speed twisty section that shortcuts the full circuit into the much shorter Club Circuit. Hockenheim’s Club Circuit is 2.1 km long and is a combination of two slow, a few medium and a couple of very fast curves linked by a medium and one long straight with a kink. As such it is more of a handling than a speed circuit, and with its lag-ridden turbo, the 935/77 is not the easiest machine to pedal rapidly around here.

114

Being smooth and keeping on top of the turbo is the secret and Timo puts on an impressive display in a car that was clocked at 340km/h on the Mulsanne Straight in its time. Its performance still feels very strong today, and the thrust when the motor is on full boost, the brakes and grip are still impressive. However, times have moved on, and I bet Timo can peddle the new GT3 road car around Hockenheim even more rapidly and with a lot less effort than the old Le Mans winner. Thanks to lessons learnt in the heat of competition, this is how far Porsche road cars have come in 40 years. Such is the relentless march of progress. Porsche thoughtfully brought along a 964 RS, 991 GT3 and 991 Turbo S for us to try. Having driven the GT3 on the road and the Turbo on track, I thought at the time that the two press launches had their venues the wrong way round and was eager to get out on track with the GT3. Hockenheim is one of my ‘home’ circuits, so I was on it from the first lap and was very pleased to find the feelings from my road drive last summer confirmed and my expectations for its track performance met and perhaps even exceeded. Compared to its predecessor, the new GT3 has even better front-end grip, and helped by the rear steering,

SAUSAGES

I

was never a scout, but I can remember some sixty years ago the school scout troupe leaping round a blazing camp fire in which sizzled the remains of some cremated “bangers” whilst chanting “When we are married, we’ll have sausages for tea”. The “Skool Sossige” (as all followers of Nigel Molesworth will readily know) was a very poor and despised object, but then it was practically the only “meat” that we saw just after the war. I say “meat” advisedly, as they tended to prove the truth of Otto von Bismarck’s (1815-1898) famous dictum: “German foreign policy, like a sausage, should not be enquired into too deeply”. Only he never said it; which is a great pity; the attribution only surfaced in the 1930s. Something similar actually appears to have originated in the mid 1860s, and came from the pen of the American poet John Godfrey Saxe 1816-1887), who once remarked: “Laws, like sausages, cease to inspire respect in proportion as we know how they are made.” I beg to differ, as nowadays I have the greatest respect for sausages (pace the “skool” variety) particularly Spanish ones, which are sometimes made in the most wondrous ways. In the little aldea in which I live, one of the highlights of the year is the Matanza.

118

Everybody gathers at one house or another, and a pig is slaughtered. The blood is carefully collected, and Morcilla is produced. When the carcass has been dissected, the intestines are carefully cleaned, and filled with the

The weekend is spent cutting, cooking and stuffing. Thrusting the men aside, the women do most of the work, and many have their own secret recipes for the production of Chorizo. This

sausage is found in many guises all over Spain. There is also a variety in Portugal (linguica, whose origins go back to Roman times) which is very similar. Spanish chorizo is sold either cured, or “fresh”, which is softer and lends itself to a number of recipes. (One easy and delicious one is to cut up a fresh chorizo in to a pan containing olive oil, add a goodly quantity of chopped onions and a little garlic,

congealing blood, chopped fat, and a bit of this and a bit of that (secrets!). The result is quite delicious, but it has many variants.Perhaps the best known is morcilla de Burgos which contains mainly pork blood and fat, rice, onions, and salt. If you leave out the rice, the texture changes, as in La Mancha. In Extremadura, the creamy morcilla patatera includes roughly mashed potatoes, whilst there is even a morcilla dulce to be found up north and in the Canaries. But it is difficult to beat the morcilla of my little aldea! Not that this is all that the matanza produces.

and stir away over a medium heat until the onion is cooked. Eat with crusty bread and red wine poured from a porrón!) Chorizo is a mixture of lean pork meat, pork fat, garlic and pimenton. It is this last ingredient which gives the sausage its colour and provides the spiciness of the finished product, which is usually air dried. If the pimenton is replaced by black pepper, the result is known as Longaniza. There is a saying that the only part of the pig which cannot be eaten is its squeal. This is true, as

all the bits and pieces for which any

COSTA CUISINE other use cannot be found go into a Botillo. These bits of meat, including the tongue, brains, liver, etcetera (I draw a discreet veil over what this term may cover) are chopped very finely, spiced, packed into pork intestines, and then smoked for several days. The sausages are then air dried, and in the final delicious result you wouldn’t know what you are eating. (Pass the porrón!) But the Botillo must not be confused with the Botifarra. This sausage is a native of Catalonia, and the pork meat from which it is produced may be mixed with honey, eggs, tripe, blood, truffles, or rice to provide a number of varieties. It is also known as llonganissa in many parts of the region, and is usuallly grilled or barbecued, but it is also often eaten raw. There are both black and white varieties, depending upon the contents. Grilled botifarra served with white beans (botifarra amb seques or botifarra amb mongetes) is a typical Catalan dish. (Rather naughtily I rejoice in the fact that there are two varieties made with tripe, one called Bisbe (meaning “bishop”) and one called Bull. The juxtaposition of tripe, bishop and bull is altogether too delicious!) Salchichon is another dry-cured sausage. It is traditionally produced in areas where there is a steady breeze, as in La Mancha, to assist in the drying process. Today, of course, drying sheds are also used. This sausage is made with pork from lean white pigs. The meat and fat are coarsely minced together, resulting in distinctive white chunks in the finished sausage. As a result of blending with pepper, nutmeg, and other spices, it tends to be spicy, with a slightly creamy texture from the fat. As the curing takes about 45 days, the salchichon is quite safe to eat raw. It is long and thin, and often sliced thinly to be eaten as a tapa on bread. With tapas one might also encounter Sobrasada, particularly in the Balearic Islands. It is a raw cured reddish-orange sausage, which is the result of mixing very finely minced lean pork and pork fat with paprika, salt and spices. It is sold in a variety of presentations, including in tins, and is eaten raw. All in all there

are something like eighteen different species of Spanish sausage. Having said

that, it is interesting to note that a study by BioMedCentral (founded in 2000 as part of the Science Navigation Group of scientific publishing companies) shows that eating more than 20 grams a day of processed meats, including sausages, increases mortality by 3.3%. ¡Buen provecho!

RIOJA

Julio César Garcia Valdés is one of the sommeliers at new wine bodega and fine dining restaurant, D-wine. Every month he brings SOCIETY Marbella’s readers insider knowledge and wine recommendations. In this issue, he takes a look at the world famous Rioja grape.

Rioja encompasses so much more than Tempranillo-based oaky reds. Since the 1980s a new wave of modern riojas has emerged on the market, shaping a new style of wine made from this well-known grape. Possessing a deeper colour and more concentrated taste, from being aged in new French oak barrels, the modern riojas are formed from riper fruit. These wines, made in some of Spain’s largest vineyards, are very much a product of the local natural environment and are packed with balance and elegance.

120

Rioja’s improved reputation as a wine-producing region, is due to numerous innovations in winemaking practices that have taken place in the last two decades. Many bodegas in the region have created some superb wines as a result of these changes. People like Miguel Angel de Gregorio, Marcos Eguren, Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, Jorge Muga, Fernando Remirez de Ganuza, Carlos San Pedro, Telmo Rodríguez and Benjamin Romeo are at the core of Rioja’s winemaking revolution; they are the pioneers of the avant-garde wines of Rioja.

ocated steps from the shore with panoramic views of the Mediterranean, gastronomic hotspot, La Sala by the Sea offers a menu specialising in International cuisine with a Thai twist. The breath-taking setting provides guests a front row seat to observe passers-by and absorb the paradisiacal ambiance. This wonderful blend conveys a blissful feeling of escaping to a faraway haven, right in the heart of Puerto Banus. The restaurant, open day and night, boasts quintessentially beach chic furnishings with Thai accents.

Several friends have raved about the food as well as the views so when Society Marbella offered me the opportunity visit the beachfront escape I jumped at the chance. As soon as I arrived I instantly fell in love with the laid-back atmosphere and charm. I glanced around to see diners feasting on seafood platters and succulent steaks, couples sipping colourful cocktails at the bar, overlooking the ocean waves, and tourists basking in the sunshine around the pool.

COSTA CUISINE We were invited to dine on the openair terrace situated above the main restaurant. With views stretching across the coast and the cool seabreeze breaking up the heat, this picture-perfect eatery is the pinnacle of seaside dining. There are only a handful of terrace tables, so be sure to call ahead and reserve one; the view is something you don’t want to miss! A chilled bottle of Laurent Perrier arrived at the table whilst we perused the inviting choices. At this beachfront beauty, people watching is also on the menu, with swarms of beachgoers passing by and beautiful bodies enjoying the incomparable beach club beneath us. As we sipped our champagne and gazed out over the ocean our first starter arrived, Grilled Chicken Satay served with a selection of Thai Dipping Sauces. If you have been to La Sala in Puerto Banus and tasted the satay you will inevitably already be a fan but the glorious setting and surrounding essence of Thailand takes it to another level of perfection. Prawns Pil Pil with Chili, Garlic and Virgin Olive Oil was the next plate to appear at our table. Bursting with flavour, the succulent prawns married effortlessly with the zests of chili and garlic and the warm bread accompaniment was ideal for finishing off the last drop of the delectable sauce. As we were devouring the last morsel we welcomed a sumptuous Sticky Pork Skewers. Nestled on a bed of fresh leaves and served with an aromatic Tamarind and Onion Dip the pork boasted a decadent tang I would gladly re-live day after day. I sat back in my chair and took a moment to absorb the tranquil ambiance before our first main course was presented. The second the plate touched the table there was an instant clash of forks as everyone dived into the most dulcet and delicious Thai salmon. Perfectly cooked, moist on the inside with a light, crisp coating… it was to die for. After devouring the first piece I noticed the tender looking asparagus beneath, whilst the vegetables are usually a delightful accompaniment, on this occasion I couldn’t decide what I preferred more! We continued with Pepper and Garlic Chicken; when holidaying last year in Thailand this became my staple, so I couldn’t wait to taste it and see if it lived up to my expectations. I can’t quite believe I am saying this, but it was actually better than what I had in Thailand!

Our attentive waiter offered us the choice of chicken or prawns with the Thai Yellow Curry; we ‘umm’ed’ and ‘ahhhh’ed’, but opted for the chicken. When it arrived, one bite and a wave of relief came over me knowing I’d made the correct decision; I suffer from major food envy so I hate knowing I made the wrong choice! That was until our waiter announced, “the prawn curry is my favourite dish on the menu,” typical! Now I have to return to try the prawns! After a truly impressive Thai journey of flavours we moved onto the International alternatives commencing with Classic Caeser Salad with Grilled Lobster. An opulent take on a traditional favourite, served against a backdrop of ocean waves and a glorious shoreline. With a glass of champagne in my hand, I reminded myself just how much I love my job! Grilled Fresh King Scallops in a Vermouth Cream and Mushroom Sauce (yes, it tastes as good as it sounds!) was next to arrive along with Sala’s famous Tuna Niçoise boasting two sizeable cuts of succulent tuna. Both dishes are sure to excite even the finest of epicureans with their fresh produce and zesty flavours. As the last dish came towards us I contemplated whether I could even taste it I was so full but when I saw the bursting club sandwich filled with chucks of grilled chicken, crispy bacon and fresh crisp lettuce my tummy somehow managed to make some room! As my friend gobbled the last crumb we all sat back in our chairs absorbing the tropical oasis we had spent the last few hours. Our waiter returned to offer us desserts but by this time I knew there was no way I would be able to even attempt another mouthful! With its opulent ambiance, superior service and ambrosial fare; La Sala by the Sea is sure to satisfy your desire for a fabulous meal and a view to match. Furthermore they are now open for dinner every evening throughout the summer. Call it the ultimate Marbella beachside dining experience… I know where I am going to be spending my days (and nights!) off this summer!

TOP THAI

Every Saturday morning, the area around Centro Plaza in Nueva Andalucia is filled with stalls and shoppers in the ever-popular ‘mercadillo’ or market. It’s no secret that Top Thai restaurant is busy every day of the week but its story began with a humble kiosk at this very market. The SOCIETY Marbella team are Top Thai regulars but this month Features Editor Amber O’Shaughnessy made a special trip to the restaurant in order to meet the man who makes the magic happen – Head Chef, Top. Tell us a little about how Top Thai restaurant came about. Our story has been slow and gradual, building step by step. We’ve been here in Centro Plaza for a long time, nine years in July in fact. It all started with a

124

kiosk in which we created classic Thai dishes for Saturday market-goers. Then, just under a year ago, we moved into this restaurant. All of our customers from the kiosk followed us to the new location and we of course gained many new ones. Benefiting from a much larger kitchen, we extended our tried and tested menu from 25 plates to over 100. Apart from a more extensive menu, how else has Top Thai evolved since the kiosk days? Our formula very much remains the same – authentic, top quality food at a highly reasonable price. Our chefs are Thai and use traditional Thai methods of cooking, based on recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. This concept was successful when we had the kiosk and has proven its worth once again in the restaurant. For example, we have just been named

COSTA CUISINE

one of the top 5 Thai restaurants in Puerto Banús by Trip Advisor. So, as the ultimate expert on the menu, what dishes would you recommend a Top Thai first timer should order? The Steamed Fish with Lemon and Chilli is very good as is the Grilled King Prawns with Seafood Sauce. Asian fusion dishes are also interesting to try so the Massaman Curry would be an excellent choice. For those with a sweeter tooth, I would suggest Mango and Sweet Sticky Rice or Fried Pineapple or Banana with Vanilla Ice Cream. In Thailand, you buy this dish from street food stalls so we just had to include this authentic Thai sweet. Has Thai street food had a large influence on the restaurant menu? Yes, most certainly. We have taken a lot of classic street food dishes and adapted them slightly to appeal to European tastes. Obviously, if a guest wants a Thai standard of spicy, we can add chilli to any dish to suit. Why do you think Thai food has become so popular? With increased awareness of the benefits of healthy living, people don’t just want tasty food but food that is nutritious as well. Thai cuisine boasts an array of tastes – sweet, spicy and salty – from many ingredients such as lemongrass and lime leaves that feature in the recipes, but most importantly these dishes are healthy at the same time. We offer many lighter options for our more health conscious customers including Thai Salads and Steamed Fish as well as gluten free and vegetarian dishes. We like to think we have something to offer for everyone. The popularity of Thai cuisine has led to the rise of many Asian restaurants along the Coast. What makes Top Thai stand out from the competition?

I would say that all our efforts are concentrated on delivering authentic Thai food; this is our top priority. Some of our ingredients are shipped in directly from Thailand – you can’t get more bona fide than that! Usually Thai restaurants have a very plush interior but ours is simple because we prefer to pay complete attention to the client, ensuring they leave feeling satisfied and keen to come back. We also have a dynamic team full of new ideas, which ensures that our restaurant continues to appeal to customers. For example, we have introduced breakfast on a Saturday to cater for market-goers, offering fresh coffee and Thai tapas to shoppers. We also have a large outdoor bar, which will come into its own during the summer months, serving up some delectable cocktails. It’s an exciting time for you and the team, but what’s next for Top Thai?

We have lots of ideas in the pipeline. Our takeaway service has proved highly popular so we are perhaps looking to offer home delivery soon. We also want to promote our catering service for corporate events and special party occasions; already this year we were involved in an exclusive event at Pangea nightclub, providing Thai ‘pinchos’ for guests. Head Chefs Top and Amnat as well as the rest of the Top Thai team exude a passion for delivering unparalleled customer service and authentic Thai dishes. With a traditional Thai bidding of farewell, hands in a prayer position and a bow of the head, I head on my way – but not before ensuring I have a rich Thai curry with Jasmine Rice to devour when I get home. went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do.

It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. morning, the blessing ceremony in the afternoon followed by cocktails and the reception party into the night. All were outdoors, the weather was amazing and all this infused with the surroundings and the ‘buzz’ our guests came with made it truly the best wedding, I myself, had ever been to, and I still can’t believe that it was my own.

and then he asked me to marry him - my response was a mixture of laughter and tears, and of course, I said ‘Yes!’. We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.

I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…

The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain! I wanted a wedding with a difference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holiday at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

After the sounds of the Spanish guitar and a few champagne cocktails later, guests were ushered to the reception on the outdoor terrace surrounded by olive trees with suspended Chinese lanterns and wicker hearts. Surprises for our guests, and our selves, were ‘wow’ factors starting with flamenco dancing, speeches and performances from our loved ones to large glow sticks on our entrance, a live bongo player over a UK DJ spinning the best beats and then a firework finale.
