PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Society Marbella published by and produced by: PUBLISHER Andy Clark DESIGNER Constanza Mtz.

March is a month that is popular with everyone. The Welsh love it

because the 1st marks St. David’s Day, the Irish love it because St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th gives them a chance to celebrate and the rest of us love it because it means the beginning of spring. Is there one single person who doesn’t love spring? Spring means that summer is on its way, the mercury shoots up, the beach clubs open again and it’s party time on the Coast. Of course, the main theme of this time of year is renewal so, to give our readers some tips as to how they can look and feel as good as new, we have given the March issue of SOCIETY MARBELLA an anti-ageing theme. Our very own Nicola McGeorge has been out and about asking the beauty experts for their advice and she was surprised by some of the tips that were offered. Read all about it in our health and beauty section. This month our celebrity spotlight falls on Katy Perry, a singer who has taken a leaf out of Madonna’s book and seems to adopt a different character and sound every time she releases an album. At the BRIT Awards her Egyptian high priestess persona grabbed everyone’s attention, as she performed a track from her latest album, Prism. Released in October last year, this fourth release looks set to follow the success of her previous albums and consolidate her position as one of the most successful female artists in the world. As someone defined by her confident – some would say brash – personality, Perry’s life has not been without its dark times and her very public divorce from Russell Brand seemed to test her resolve. However, she seems to have picked herself up, dusted herself

down and looks set for at least another decade at the top of the charts. Gibraltar might be a tiny territory, but it certainly has produced some very beautiful women. Kaiane Aldorino famously won Miss World in 2009 and this month our fashion shoot features the runner-up at Miss Gibraltar 2013, the gorgeous Jamielee Randall; glamour and beauty in one very stylish package, I think you will agree. Are you trying to sell your property at the moment? If you are we have some great advice from David Cullinan, owner of DWC Property Photography, who knows a thing or two about turning comfortable family homes into movie stars. If your villa, townhouse or apartment seems to be taking a while to sell or if you have had little interest from prospective buyers then David and his team have the equipment and, even more importantly, the skill to ensure that your property’s ‘profile pictures’ show it off to its best advantage. Are there any petrolheads out there? If so you will love our Ian Kuah’s review of the amazing McLaren P1. Ian says, “Spectacular!” and we say, “This is what the future of luxury sports cars looks like!” We can but hope that this is so, because the P1 looks like a dream and drives like one of McLaren’s snappiest F1 creations - pure engineering genius. With Padre Peter’s profile of Gitanos and reviews of Slainte and Aroma, two new local restaurants that feature Irish and Indian cuisine respectively, there is plenty to read this month. Until next time... Andy Clark

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

B

ursting onto the music scene back in 2008 with the infamous words, “I kissed a girl and I liked it’, Katy Perry was never going to be the shy and retiring type. In fact, the 29-year old became almost as recognisable for her exhibitionism, showmanship and outlandish dress as her singles. ‘I Kissed a Girl’ and ‘Hot n Cold’ skyrocketed Perry to fame and platinum record sales. It seems like just yesterday that SOCIETY MARBELLA featured the star on our cover back when she was at the height of her colourful pop era. Actually three years have passed since then and the chameleon-esque nature of Katy Perry means that with the release of her new album Prism, the star is embracing a totally new sound. Prism, the American singer-songwriter’s fourth studio album, hit the shops last October and became Perry’s fastestselling release. The album is most definitely a product of Perry’s own vision and imagination; speaking to Billboard magazine in 2012, she said, “I know exactly the record I want to make next. I know the artwork, the colouring and the tone... I even know what type of tour I’m doing next. I’ll be very pleased if the vision I have in my head becomes a reality.” The star was also adamant that the album was not to be simply a successor of her previous album Teenage Dream, which featured

“There’s not really any darkness on the record…I really let that light in.”

“I believe in love with no boundaries or preface. I come from a childhood where there was a lot of judgment on this subject, but I have freed myself from that” hit tracks ‘California Gurls’, ‘The One That Got Away’ and ‘Firework’. She told Capital FM, “That would be silly. It’s not of any interest for me to try and outdo myself at every corner. Eventually you just like pop, explode.” Indeed there is a marked step away from her previous work in Prism. Critics have commented on the vulnerability and maturity behind many of the tracks. This darker side may well have been coaxed out by the breakdown of Perry’s brief marriage to notorious lothario, Russell Brand in late December 2011. During a June 2012 interview with L’Uomo Vogue, the singer stated: “it will be a much darker album than the previous ones. It was inevitable, after what I went through. If I had a time machine and could go back in time, I would. But I can’t, so, you’ll discover another part of me.” The creative process behind the new album was also informed by literature, most notably the works of German author Eckhart Tolle whose novel The Power of Now is said to have inspired the Santa Barbara born pop star after she viewed a six minute video of the writer discussing this self-help book. The singer also collaborated with numerous Swedish-house music

producers including Max Martin, StarGate, Benny Blanco, Juicy J, Jonatha Brooke, Sia Furler (the singer song-writer who collaborated with David Guetta on the anthemic ‘Titanium’), Bloodshy, and Klas Åhlund. As a result many of the tracks are ‘dance-centric’ particularly ‘Love Me’ and ‘This Is How We Do’, which has been described by Billboard as being the possible “song of summer 2014.” It’s clear that the album is most definitely not a Teenage Dream 2.0, as Katy Perry herself told Digital Spy, “Prism is more organic, au naturel, vulnerable and honest, but still has the same amount of fun.” Amid all the fun associated with the pop star we know today, one has to question what has remained of the daughter of two pastors who attended religious camp and was not allowed to listen to pop music? Perry spoke to L’Uomo Vogue about her childhood, saying, “I’m still the same girl in a lot of ways. I still hold on to the roots and foundation of my childhood. I don’t necessarily view life on the same terms as I grew up, but I still have a moral compass, and I try to live my life with integrity every day.”

The Changing Faces of Katy Perry

13

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

“There’s not really any darkness on the record…I really let that light in.” Certainly, Perry has a more openminded view of the world since those days. A number of Katy’s songs have dealt with the theme of homosexuality - a far cry from her devout origins. Speaking again to L’Uomo Vogue about the significance of tracks such as ‘Ur So Gay’ and ‘I Kissed a Girl’, the 29-year old professed, “I believe in equality. I believe in love with no boundaries or preface. I come from a childhood where there was a lot of judgment on this subject, but I have freed myself from that. I hope in time we can all look back at this moment and realise it was like when we look back at the civil rights movement and are ashamed of ourselves but we’re also happy that we have moved on and seen the light of equality.”

The influx of light and positivity into Perry’s life could not be more explicit than in the material for the new album. She has pushed aside the darkness associated with her very public split from Brand and has been inspired by her new beau, John Mayer in the creation of some of the new album’s tracks, most notably ‘Double Rainbow’. Elijah Sarkesian describes the song as boasting “some of

Katy’s finest vocals of the album.” The singer revealed to MTV News: “There’s not really any darkness on the record…I really let that light in.” The Prismatic World Tour, in support of the album, has transported these themes of light and colour to the live stage. The tour will kick off in May this year in Belfast, before the Perry entourage heads to Scotland and England. The second leg will include stops in the US and Canada. In a December 2013 interview with Capital FM, Perry stated that the tour would have less of a storyline than her previous tours, saying, “I’m going to bring all the bells and whistles like it was last time but it won’t be so highly narrated. I just want a little bit more room to express myself.” She added, “I’m just really excited. I just did a big tour meeting yesterday and saw the graphic drawing of the stage and it’s unlike anything I’ve seen for any other artist and it’s unlike anything I’ve ever done. It’s different, it’s fresh, it’s clean and it feels like it’s actually in the middle of the audience,” Katy explained. The regeneration of her image and studio material is perhaps the key to Perry’s success. Whether she steps out donning pink candy-floss coloured hair, a bra covered in shiny boiled sweets or toned down in a pale gold column dress, the world remains fascinated by this bubbly, blue-eyed singing sensation. Who knows what lies around the corner for Katy Perry? We do know however, that Katy will continue to entertain and conjure up new boundaries to cross. Speaking to Vogue she said, “If I’m not dreaming, I’m dead, so therefore I continue to dream every day.”

“The past is not simply the past, but a prism through which the subject filters his own changing self-image” Doris Kearns Goodwin

Cheryl Cole is set to make a return to hit TV show, The X Factor this year after spending hours negotiating a contract with Simon Cowell and the management team. After the chaos that surrounded her sudden departure from The X Factor US, fans were sure the Geordie singer would not return to the UK version but Simon has spent a lot of time repairing their friendship and has reportedly promised Cheryl a £2 million deal to return this year alongside Simon himself. He has also supposedly agreed to an unlimited wardrobe budget and access to his private plane for the singer. If Cole does return she will be replacing Nicole Scherzinger who left at the end of the previous series.

16

Simon Cowell and his girlfriend Lauren Silverman welcomed a baby son into the world on Valentine’s Day last month. The couple was elated to announce the news of baby Eric’s arrival and Simon was particularly pleased to name the tot after his late father. However, the news of the baby’s arrival was tinged with a hint of melancholy, as the couple will now need to consider how to work out their living arrangements, due to Lauren’s ex-husband and eight year old son, Adam. Lauren and her ex-husband did not split amicably and a decision has been made that the couple should have joint custody of Adam on a week-by-week basis and that Cowell should not be present in the same room as the boy until January 2015. This means that Lauren will be forced to spend a lot of time in New York, where Adam attends school, but Simon is due to start filming in the UK soon for Britain’s Got Talent. Lauren has already stated that she will not fly a lot with the young baby so it seems Simon will be spending a lot of time on planes between the UK and the US to spend time with Lauren and his son.

The Kardashians… never a family

to step out of the spotlight for long, there is much drama and rumour surrounding Bruce Jenner, the wedding of the year and Khloe’s sad split from Lamar Odom. While Bruce’s representatives claim his operation last month to reduce his Adam’s apple was a normal procedure, reports claim that the former Olympic champion is hoping to become a woman!

The wedding of Kim and Kayne West is due to take place in May in

the suburbs of Paris but, according to reports, Kim’s older sister Kourtney is getting fed up with all the furore surrounding the couple and is annoyed at how much Kim spends on things. Tensions are also building for Khloe, whose soon-to-be ex-husband Lamar Odom is planning a move to Spanish team Vitoria for two months. Although the newly blonde Kardashian has split from her former love, she still cares about him and is worried that if he is away from his support system the drug abuse, which was one of the reasons for the split, will spiral out of control.

The Only Way is Essex is back on

Private couple Leighton Meester, of Gossip Girl fame, and Adam Brody, who found fame in The OC, have reportedly wed in secret. So secret, in fact, that news of their marriage only emerged days after the event took place. The couple met on the set of the film The Oranges and have been dating just a year. A first marriage for both, we wish them happiness in the cutthroat world of celebrity coupledom.

18

our screens and with new cast members, a new baby on the way (courtesy of Billie Faiers and her fiancé) and a LOT of drama it’s sure to be a great season. Already in its 11th series, the TV reality show has made stars of many of its cast members including Amy Childs, Mark Wright and Sam Faiers. The Faiers sisters (Sam and Billie) have also hinted that they may be about to start filming for a Keeping Up With the Kardashiansstyle show that will star all the members of their apparently ‘crazy’ family.

This service, the first of its kind in Spain, forms part of the company’s commitment to quality and excellence, which have also made it the market leader in this business sector, due to the fact that it currently has over 63,000 foreign customers residing in Spain. As a result, services such as purchasing a policy, making enquiries, processing claims, sending documents and 24hour assistance can all be carried out in English or German at a time which is convenient for the customer by making just one phone call.

And not only does Línea Directa offer the best, it also offers its services at the most competitive price on the market. It does this in two ways: Price personalisation: behind each quote there is a sales

Cast: Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, Krysten Ritter, Ryan Hansen, Enrico Colantoni

Braveheart by Ashanti

American entertainer Ashanti releases her fifth studio album this month. It will be her first since 2008 and the first since setting up her own label, Written Entertainment. The singer has worked with many other heavyweights in the music industry on the album including Dr Dre, Busta Rhymes, Rick Ross and R Kelly. Influences on the album come from the film of the same name. Ashanti has said that the metaphor she used was the brave underdog who fights passionately to win against the bigger players in the game, as she challenges the major music corporations with her smaller label. Fans of Ashanti will love the album and those who didn’t love her older songs will hear a new sound that may pique their interest.

20

Ella Henderson – (to be announced)

The 18 year-old X Factor finalist releases her first studio album this month after finishing sixth in the 2012 competition. The star signed with Simon Cowell’s label, Syco soon after finishing on the TV series, but said that the album would be “ready when it is ready” and that she wasn’t prepared to rush her album like the other finalists. The singer has worked with a number of writers and producers on the album and says that the album will include upbeat songs, ballads and the unforgettable ‘Ella sound’ that may surprise some fans.

The operation goes to plan and the agents hide their stolen cash, believing they are safe. That is, until someone begins assassinating the team one by one… Cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, Terrance Howard, Olivia Williams

The upcoming self-titled tenth studio album from Colombian singer and songwriter Shakira is her first English language album since She Wolf in 2009. The singer began recording the album in February 2012 and worked with well-known producers including Benny Blanco, Akon, LMFAO, Dr Luke and RedOne and by September Shakira was describing the songs on the album as “comfortable as (my) torn jeans.” The album’s first single is also titled Shakira and the singer has described the whole album as being a “little bit of rock, a little bit of folk, a little reggae and naturally some dance.”

K

ing Juan Carlos’s daughter entered a Mallorca court last month to give her testimony in a money laundering and fraud case, thus becoming the first Spanish royal to appear in court as a suspect. Hundreds of people turned up at the main entrance of the Palma de Mallorca court to see the arrival of Infanta Cristina. The Princess was accused of being “evasive” as she gave evidence for the first time in a corruption case that has tarnished the image of the country’s royal family.

24

She was questioned for several hours by José Castro, an investigative judge, as part of an inquiry into an alleged financial scandal involving her husband, Iñaki Urdangarín. She is facing a preliminary investigation for tax fraud and money laundering through a company she co-owned with Mr Urdangarín. He is facing a separate investigation for allegedly embezzling around €6 million of public money when he was head of the Nóos Institute, a not-for-profit organisation that arranged sporting events and conferences. The hearing was closed to the public, but Manuel Delgado, a lawyer representing the Frente Cívico (Civic Front), told reporters outside the court that “95 per cent” of the Princess’s answers had been “evasive”. “She appears calm, relaxed and very well prepared,” he said, adding that

she had exercised her right not to give answers that would implicate her. “She is not diverging from the expected script,” Mr Delgado added. “Her answers are for the most part ‘I don’t know’ and ‘I am not aware’.” Neither Princess Cristina nor her husband have been formally charged with any crime and both deny any wrongdoing.

T

he widow of the prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case has stated that she was stunned when police arrived to quiz her – four years after his death. Euclides Lopes Montero, 40 was wanted for questioning in relation to Madeleine’s disappearance. Luisa Rodrigues was questioned by Portuguese officers as mobile phone records pinpointed Euclides at the scene of the crime on the night three-year-old Madeleine was snatched. The ex-convict and heroin addict remains a key part of the inquiry, even though he died in a tractor accident in 2009, two years after the abduction. It has also emerged that British cold-case detectives are anxious to trace three of his known associates who are believed to have carried out burglaries in the Praia da Luz area around the time of Madeleine’s disappearance

A

member of a Pink Panther style gang of jewel thieves has been arrested in Spain. Borko Ilincic, who is wanted for a string of robberies across the world, is being held by Spanish police after being arrested leaving a hotel in the town of Alcala de Hanares, near Madrid. Borko 33, is suspected of being part of the team behind a £2.5 million diamond heist at the Wafi City Mall in Dubai in 2007, in which the suspects raced through the shopping complex in two stolen cars. Ilincic was held by Spanish police as he drove out of a hotel in a hire car. Detectives said he was carrying a Bosnian passport when he was arrested, although Mr Ilincic’s Interpol wanted file lists him as being from Serbia, from where many of the Panther gang hail.

M

ichael Bublé recently wowed the crowds in Madrid with his show-stopping style. We don’t have any other news on Mr B to add to this but the team at Society ‘heart’ him so much we just had to include him. SWOON!

E

U officials will be asking Spain to explain why police fired rubber bullets at migrants trying to swim to the Spanish territory of Ceuta. The Spanish authorities admitted that rubber bullets were fired, but said nobody was injured. At least 14 people drowned last month as hundreds of migrants attempted to reach the North African enclave from Morocco. The admission from Jorge Fernandez Diaz, the Interior Minister of Spain, to Parliament on Thursday contradicts earlier statements by Spain’s Civil Guard who insisted that no bullets had been fired and came after complaints by human rights organisations. Video footage shows a group of African migrants attempting to swim round a man-made breakwater that separates Moroccan and Spanish waters to reach Ceuta. The footage, captured on the mobile phone of an onshore witness, shows a group of migrants wading to the beach, where officers from the Civil Guard are waiting. A series of loud bangs can be heard, as officers fire into the water.

ollywood actor Alec Baldwin was seen beaming with pride as he and his wife Spanish yoga trainer Hilaria 29 posed for photos with their six-month old baby girl, Carmen Gabriela outside the Ritz Hotel in Madrid.

26

After a romantic stroll it was back to the day jobs. Alec headed to the set of his latest project, Torrente 5, which has just begun filming in the capital, while Hilary was spotted performing some pretty impressive yoga moves for photo shoot in a Madrid park, watched by her baby Carmen.

L

ewis Hamilton crashed his new Mercedes during his first lap of pre-season testing at the Jerez track. The accident was caused by a front-wing failure, according to his team, who had unveiled the car earlier in the day. He ended up crashing against the circuit barrier and the car had to be lifted off the track by a crane. Formula One may be entering a new era in 2014 but the Mercedes and Ferrari teams chose to pay homage to Michael Schumacher, the man who remains the benchmark for the sport. Hamilton’s car had the slogan “Keep Fighting Michael,” on its silver livery, while Ferrari plan to post 72 messages of support for Schumacher on their website to represent each of his wins with the Italian team. Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso were also present for the training session, which should help to set the pace for this year’s season.

S

ir Sean Connery has been questioned about links to convicted criminals as part of a court probe into the sale of his former Spanish home. He was quizzed on whether he had offshore firms, had ever given gifts to Land Registry workers and what his relationship was with Jesus Gil and Julian Munoz, as well as ex-town hall planning chief, Juan Antonio Roca. MASTER CLASS By Nicola McGeorge

Looking for special occasion makeup ideas? Find out how to get this red carpet look in just a few steps.

STEP 1 Using a foundation brush layer on MAC Strobe Cream, which boosts the look of dull, flat or tired-looking skin. Next, move onto the brows as they are the most important facial feature; all angles of the face are determined by the brows - they can lift the eyes, narrow or widen the face. Fill in gaps with the Shavata Brow Pencil then add definition with HiBrow shadow.

STEP 3 Using a cotton bud remove any shadow, which might have dropped onto the under-eye area, leaving it ready for concealing. To diminish under-eye shadows work YSL Touche Eclat onto any dark areas, then set with powder. Next apply Chanel Vitalumiere, a creamy and luxuriously lightweight foundation, which blends effortlessly for perfectly smooth, even-toned, radiant skin. After buffing the foundation into the skin to get rid of any harsh lines, conceal any remaining imperfections with Make Up For Ever HD Concealer.

STEP 4

Now for the contouring; apply MAC Tenderling just under the cheekbones, along the jaw line, down the sides of the nose and across the temples. Next, using a sponge, dab Benefit Highbeam highlighter on the places that would naturally catch the light; top of the cheek bones, bridge of the nose, cupid’s bow. Finish this with a dusting of MUFE HD Powder along the t-zone.

STEP 2 Normally you would now move onto foundation, however as this look requires quite a lot of dark eye shadow, any excess will, of course, drop onto the under-eye area. If this mixes in with your foundation it will go a nice shade of grey, which is not the look you are after. So, I recommend starting off with the eyes first and then cleaning up afterwards. Dab Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion all over the lids to keep everything in place. Next, using a large shader, pat Urban Decay ‘W.O.S’ from the Naked Basics palette all over the lid to just above the crease. Buff ‘Naked 2’ from the same palette into the crease and the outer corner of the eye, winging it out slightly, then create a ‘V’ at the outer corner of the eyes with ‘Faint’, taking it under the lower lash line and about three quarters along the eye. Do not take it all the way across, as it makes the eye look smaller. Finally apply a tiny amount of MAC Pigment ‘Vanilla’ in the inner corner of the eye to brighten the area and pull the eyes apart, also highlighting under the brow bone with the same shade.

STEP 5 Line the upper lid with Bobbi Brow ‘Black Mauve Shimmer’ Longwear Gel Eyeliner, bringing it slightly past the end of the outer eye. To open the eye, line the waterline with Benefit Eye Bright; this pink perk-meup is perfect for all skin tones. Curl lashes with the Shu Uemura eyelash curler and apply Christian Dior DiorShow Blackout Waterproof Mascara.

STEP 6 Line lips, define and accentuate with MAC Spice, then fill lips in with Benefit Lipgloss ‘Fauxmance.’ Spray MAC Fix + to set makeup and add radiance.

Mental Health,

BREAKING THE TABOO Let those who struggle know they are not alone

I

t is important to note that depression, anxiety and panic attacks are not signs of weakness. Mental illness is something that can affect anyone and its onset can never be predicted or controlled. It’s a fact that one in three of us will suffer from mental health issues at some time. Many professionals and celebrities are actively exposing their knowledge and their personal battles to help the population understand that many people can be susceptible to mental illnesses. Life may or may not be harder than it was a generation ago, but our belief in “progress” has increased expectations that life should be more satisfying, resulting in mass disappointment. Millions of us live with various types of mental illness such as social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, drug addiction and personality disorders and those with physical illness can also suffer from mental illness.

Gemma Wood, is the Head of Counselling & Psychotherapy at the Medical and Psychological clinic, Cortijo Care, based in San Pedro.

DEALING WITH THE STIGMA Luckily the stigma around mental illness has started to decrease over the years. However, many unfortunately still have a certain image of mental illness; countless people still think it means institutionalisation, straitjackets, padded cells and multiple personalities and feel threatened by it, connecting the diagnoses to crime, prison and/or madness. However this does not seem the case for our country’s soldiers. As a population we offer acceptance, support and empathy to our soldiers who have returned from battle injured physically or emotionally, which is rightly so as soldiers are exposed to very disturbing influences of battle, causing trauma (physically and emotional) and pain. Why, though, is there still such a large percentage that cannot offer the same support and empathy to others that suffer from emotional and other mental illnesses? Life is a different type of fight for many people, leaving them highly susceptible to suffering in a similar way.

ACCEPTANCE Our aim is to try to help people understand mental illness, helping them accept that this illness is not a choice. I strongly believe that if we can help the population become more compassionate towards the nature of mental illness we then have the opportunity to allow people to seek out the help they may need. The more support and acceptance around these illnesses that is available, then the better the opportunity for change in a very demanding world. COMMON TYPES OF MENTAL ILLNESSES Anxiety disorders. People will respond to certain objects or situations with fear and dread, as well as physical signs of anxiety or nervousness, such as a rapid heartbeat and sweating. Anxiety disorders include generalised anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder and specific phobias. Mood disorders (also called affective disorders) involve persistent feelings of sadness or periods of feeling overly happy, or dramatic fluctuations. The most common mood disorders are depression, mania, and bipolar disorder.

Psychotic disorders. Two of the most common symptoms of psychotic disorders are hallucinations and delusions, which are false beliefs that the sufferer accepts as true, despite evidence to the contrary, e.g. schizophrenia. Eating disorders involve extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviours involving weight and food. Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder are the most common. Impulse control and addiction disorders. People with impulse control disorders are unable to resist urges to perform acts that could be harmful

to themselves or others. Pyromania (starting fires), kleptomania (stealing) and compulsive gambling are examples. Alcohol and drugs are common addictions. Often, people with these disorders become so involved with the objects of their addiction that they begin to ignore responsibilities and relationships. Personality disorder sufferers have extreme and inflexible traits that are distressing to the person affected and can cause problems in work, school, or with social relationships. Examples include antisocial personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder and paranoid personality disorder.

ANTI-AGEING Sp

“ Looking younger has become easier

than never before, numerous invasive and non-invasive techniques allow us to find individual solutions for almost everyone” Dr Kai Kaye / Director Ocean Clinic

The Facelift is becoming one of the most popular

facial rejuvenation procedures requested. Although in the past the over-corrected or «plastic» look was all too common, today we can produce beautiful, natural-looking results. Being an expert in this field with many publications and various techniques described by himself, Dr. Kaye creates a youthful, long-lasting natural looking result. Paying meticulous attention to tightening and repositioning the facial muscles and skin, in addition to a special technique of sculpting and repositioning the facial fat, many patients look as many as 5-10 years younger and, best of all, instead of looking «lifted», today’s patients simply look refreshed, rested and healthy. The basic idea behind a facelift is to remove excess skin that is loose and sagging on the face and the neck, and to tighten the underlying tissue. The excess skin that is removed never returns, so you will always look younger than you would have without surgery, even 10 years after surgery. The skin does continue to age, however. When new sagging develops, you may, if you choose, have a minor «mini-tuck»facelift procedure to correct it, or use other techniques to enhance your appearance.

Skin Peeling techniques

are an alternative way to rejuvenate the skin without the need for surgery. The cumulative effects of the sun, age, and smoking make the skin appear wrinkled and thin. In addition, abnormal cells may grow and multiply, creating unsightly spots or in some cases, skin cancers. Luckily for us, the skin is unique in its ability to regenerate itself. The normal pace of regeneration, however, is slow and does not prevent the accumulation of abnormal and damaged skin cells. A more efficient way of ridding the body of those abnormal cells and replacing them with «new» skin is to «peel» off the top layers of skin. The body then replaces these layers with new skin that is healthier and younger looking. What are the different types of chemical peels? Mechanical peels work by «rubbing off» the top layers of skin. Older methods used a pumice stone. Dermabrasion with rotating devices also enjoyed popularity. More recently even salons have started using systems that «sandblast» the skin. How well these methods work is highly technician dependent. Chemical peels work by putting a chemical on the skin that reacts with and breaks up the top layers of skin (epidermis). Examples of this are the «fruit acid» peels, «TCA/Bluepeel» peel, «Obagi blue peel», etc. Depending on the nature and concentration of the chemicals used these peels can strip off only very superficial layers of skin or they can go deep into the skin, providing a real lifting effect which can replace in selected patients surgical lifting procedures. How does a deep peel work? A deep chemical peel takes of the complete epidermis (upper layer of the skin) and penetrates deep into the dermis. In this layer it creates a coagulation of elastic fibers (Elastin, Collagen etc.) which leads to a restructuring and tightening of the facial skin resulting in a long lasting lifting effect of the face similar to a surgical facelift.

Botox - Treatments

are, with over 4,5 million procedures performed in 2012, the most popular minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure performed.

Used to treat facial lines and wrinkles such as forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, and lines around the neck, BOTOX®, Vistabel® or Azzalurel® are the registered product names for Botulinum toxin Type A. Botulinum toxin is produced by a bacterium known as “clostridium botulinum”. In small doses, botulinum toxin can be used safely to reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. In addition, botulinum toxin has been shown to be an effective method for treating other conditions, such as migraines, excessive sweating, and muscle spasms, among others. With little downtime and almost immediate results, Botox-Treatments can help you restore a smoother, more youthful appearance to the face. You will most likely begin to notice the results within a few days following the procedure. As the muscles in the treatment area are unable to contract, the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles will decrease. The results from a single procedure last approximately 3 to 4 months after which you can receive subsequent injections to maintain the desired results. Although the results are temporary, those treatments can safely and effectively help to restore the smooth, more youthful appearance you desire.

Glow GET EM

uickly becoming known as the ‘Lunchtime Lift’, the Pure Skin Beauty Room in Nueva Andalucia

A FACIAL WITH BENEFITS

is now offering the Ling Energy Lift Facial which uses a combination of far-infrared rays and Asian health principles to turn back time in an hour. When celebrity NYC beautician Ling Chan unveiled her latest treatment, the Energy Lift Facial and revealed that it made her clients look five years younger, Sofia Saide, owner of Pure Skin Beauty Room, knew that she had to bring this state of the art facial to Marbella. “My Ling treatments and products have gone down a storm with my clients,” explained Sofia. “They produce results and our clients are happy. So when I found out about the latest treatment, I couldn’t get it into my salon fast enough. Although we are lucky to live in such a beautiful place with year round sunshine, the climate does play havoc with our skin. This is why I only invest in the best anti-ageing treatments so that I can really look after our clients’ needs. It’s important to know you have anti-ageing options that don’t involve cutting your skin or injecting your face with foreign substances.” So why is this treatment different? In a nutshell, the facial aims to contour, tone and rejuvenate the skin. It also helps to shrink the sebaceous glands meaning it is great for breakout skin. This innovative facial and body wellness treatment utilizes the extraordinary properties of Tourmaline, a semi-precious gemstone also referred to as the ‘magic’ stone. Energy Lift combines the infusion of farinfrared rays and Asian health principles to stimulate the body’s self-healing and rejuvenation for increased wellness of the mind, body and, of course, your face.

36

How does it work? Using a healing vibration energy machine imbued with Tourmaline, the highest-energy producing crystal in the world, this deep infusion of ‘chi’ or energy, is a concept used for over 5,000 years in traditional Chinese TCM healing. This gemstone is known for its ability to aid in the detoxification process of the human body, increase vitality and immune function, while promoting all round wellbeing.

Energy Lift Therapy infuses far-infrared rays, which are invisible rays of vibration energy that have the unique ability to penetrate all layers of the human body, reaching the tissues, muscles, and bone. When far-infrared energy is applied to facial acupressure points it instantly rejuvenates and energizes the face. Facial contour is lifted and blood circulation is stimulated, allowing toxins to be eliminated to reveal a younger and healthier complexion. When applied to the body, far-infrared healing energy relaxes the nervous system to promote stress relief, reduce aches and pains, promote blood circulation, lymphatic drainage and weight loss. Energy Lift can also lift our emotions and induce a sense of wellbeing, while also promoting tranquil sleep.

What can you expect? This treatment will take you on a journey of complete relaxation and total body wellness. The treatment starts with 20 minutes of Energy Lift wellness on the back spinal area, neck and shoulders to open the meridian channels for proper ‘chi’ energy movement and lymphatic drainage. “It feels like a warm, polished stone being run up and down your spine and around you neck and shoulders, explains Sofia. “It is extremely relaxing and, if you’re a fan of infrared rays you’re going to love this.“ Next is the facial, which includes a glycolic peel, a massage, and multiple masks. After applying the Apple Stem Cellular Energy serum and DNA DoNotAge Cellular Youth Extension cream, Sofia or a member of her team will performº Ling’s signature acupressure technique with the far-infrared device, leading to a lifting effect, a healthy flush, and ironed-out wrinkles. If you want to look as youthful as you feel inside and restore the natural glow of your youth then the Energy Lift Facial should be the next thing on your ‘must do’ list. NAILING THE ISSUE

If you love trendy nails and are over the age of 50 you don’t have to stay stuck in a basic French manicure nail rut. Using a few expert tips from The Nail Place Marbella you can celebrate the fabulous 50s and beyond with nail shades that are wowworthy, stylish and chic.

W

hen most women over 50 look at their hands, they see their grandmother’s staring back at them. As we get older, our skin becomes thinner, our nails get brittle and soft and, no matter how good our faces look, our hands often give away our true ages. “It’s never too late to turn back the clock on your hands,” explains nail guru Eeva. “Exfoliating and moisturisng the hands are key. At the salon we also use heated mitts during our treatment as they open the pores and let moisture in for effective deep conditioning. I advise all our clients to wear rubber gloves when doing the dishes, don’t use your nails as tools, use cuticle oil regularly, apply sun screen to your hands and get regular manicures to keep your nails healthy”

THE NAIL RULES

Shape: “Squoval,” not quite square and not quite oval, is the chic shape for over 50s

DRESS for your ATTITUDE, not your AGE

T

here’s no rule to say that longer hair shouldn’t be worn as you head towards your 40s or beyond; it’s just a question of looking at the style and the colour and finetuning it a bit. Celebrities such as Liz Hurley have done wonders for us more mature ladies. She has shown that you don’t have to cut all your hair off the minute you have children and, even though she is nearly 50, her hair looks as fabulous as it did in her 20s. Then there is Helen Mirren who has a gorgeous fringe and layers, which really focus attention around the face and she also works a mature colour beautifully. Glenn Close wears her hair with great texture and, for a stunning impact look no further than Julianne Moore with her luscious red locks.

38

Colour: On fingernails, use neutral beiges or pinks, colours that go with anything. Dark polish can accentuate your aging hands and shorten your fingers, whereas a light colour elongates them. If you are hooked on French manicures, use a soft white, not a bright one, with the tip applied in a very thin line. For a night out, paint on a little shimmer and shine with a metallic polish. To complement your skin tone, fair and medium skin tones look best in a shimmery metallic polish featuring silver tones. Darker skinned beauties shine in gold metallic with a hint of copper colouring Toes: Save the fun colours for your tootsies. You can pump up the volume with various shades of bold kaleidoscope-inspired colours. For spring and summer pedicures, swipe on mint green, iridescent fuchsia or a peachy orange hue. For autumn and winter, paint your toes a pretty purple, navy blue or burgundy. When you feel like being extra adventurous, metallic or

playful designs on your big toes add a pop of additional colour and convey a carefree, ready-for-the-beach vibe.

LASH OUT

The Nail Place also offers another antiageing treatment – Eyelash Extensions. Not only do they open up your eyes and make them look bigger, giving you a more youthful appearance but, if your eyesight isn’t what it used to be, they can make a huge difference to your everyday beauty routine. At The Nail Place 50 is the new 40 and we will do our best to help you look as young as you feel. The Nail Place Tel. 952 818 636 thenailplacemarbella.com

The difference between looking fresh and youthful or older than you are can be as simple as the state of your bangs or the shade of your highlights. Hair expert extraordinaire, Zoe Woods, head technician and owner of Wood Salon shares her anti-aging hair tips.

COLOUR ME BEAUTIFUL Your hair colour can also make you look older or younger. As we age, we lose definition in our face, and hair colour can add that back in. A common mistake it to go too blonde or too light in an attempt to cover grey. Your hair colour may have changed but your skin’s undertone remains the same. The worse thing you can do is completely change your hair colour from your original shade.

a treatment that is suited for their hair’s particular needs.

TLC The best way to retain your locks is to treat them with love. I highly recommend that you feed and nourish your hair by scheduling ‘in salon’ deep conditioning treatments, as they are much more powerful than anything that can be done at home. We love Redken’s intensive treatments as they allow us to cater for all budgets, treating each client as an individual and prescribing

BREAK THE RULES Some hairstylists might suggest there are “rules” on how women should wear their hair at 30, 40, 50 and 60 years old, but don’t be bullied, because there are no fixed rules. Your hair is your statement and no one else’s.

When hair is dry, it is porous and more susceptible to the elements, causing it to look dull or the colour to fade. Lacklustre locks tend to make your skin appear drawn, whereas shiny hair helps to accentuate its radiance. Always protect your hair when in the sun and choose products that are dedicated to the care and preservation of colour treated hair.

DYNAMIC APPROACH

to Ageing A nnaliza Zacharis, Rafael Arana and Jose Luis Castanio all work as fitness instructors in different areas of Dynamic Gym. They are, however, united in their opinion that sports and exercise are of paramount importance in avoiding the onslaught of illnesses associated with old age. “I think that when a person reaches forty years of age they find themselves at a very important crossroads”, explains Jose Luis, “They can basically decide what ageing process they want to embrace. They can opt for a good quality of life incorporating a balanced diet and exercise into their daily routine or they can choose to ignore this and let their health embark on a steady decline”. Jose Luis works on the main exercise floor at Dynamic Gym. The aerobic activity that takes place in the cardiovascular area of this floor helps to improve mitochondrial function (the work of energy-producing organelles in cells), which typically decreases with age. This allows your energy levels to stay high so you can remain active and mobile despite increasing in age. This influx of energy into the body also helps to prevent or reduce the risk of many illnesses associated with age such as varicose veins, heart failure and muscular degeneration. “Cardiovascular training is obviously crucial to prolong your life expectancy and maintain a more youthful appearance, but it is important to acknowledge that this exercise needs to be fulfilled in tandem with a healthy, balanced diet,” explains Rafael. “At Dynamic we like to advise our clients on all aspects of life, including those beyond the gym facilities. For example, our in-house nutritionist can recommend an eating plan, including the natural supplements, vitamins and minerals that are best for anti-ageing. We sell all of these products in our Dynamic Gym shop, which makes the process of staying fit even easier for our members. A balanced diet is essential in preventing the breakdown of the body with age.”

40

As part of our focus on anti-ageing this month, SOCIETY MARBELLA paid a visit to one of the region’s most forward thinking gyms – Dynamic in Centro Comercial Le Village - to speak with three personal trainers about the significant role played by exercise in slowing down the ageing process.

Another facet to Dynamic is the very innovative Electro Muscle Stimulation device which is proving highly popular, particularly amongst older members since only a small amount of physical exercise is demanded. In fact, Annaliza who works with the electro stimulation equipment tells SOCIETY MARBELLA that just 25 minutes on this machine is equivalent to approximately two and half hours of exercise on the cardio floor of the gym. The device offers three different programmes, all of which are designed to be anti-ageing, and include strengthening, fat burning and massage. The fat burning programme effectively stimulates fat enzymes to reduce cellulite, making the skin appear visibly firmer and hence more youthful. The massage technique is also key in the anti-ageing process, since it fuels blood circulation, which gives elasticity and tone to the blood vessels beneath the skin. Increased blood flow to the brain will also contribute to reducing the likelihood of age-related memory conditions. Again Annaliza emphasises the importance of following a healthy lifestyle outside the gym as well; drinking at least one and a half litres of water daily, avoiding sugary and processed foods and eating fruit and vegetables all help to counteract the effects of ageing. Jose Luis highlights that every person is an individual case and his job as a personal trainer is to find a personalised programme tailored to the lifestyle of that client. “I conduct a rigorous medical examination before embarking on a fitness regime with a new member. I like to find out everything about the person in order to teach how they can better live their life”. With such guidance and support as is available at Dynamic Gym, as well as the many revolutionary means to keep fit, there really is no better time to take that all important anti-ageing approach to life. SUPER LEAGUE KICKS OFF

his year Sala Group is taking its golf event to the next level.

Sala Super League is an exclusive year-long event taking place at the finest golf courses on the coast. The successful leisure group commenced with an impressive competition at The Marbella Club Golf Resort on February 8th. “We wanted to start the year in style and Marbella Club Golf Resort boasts a fantastic course in beautiful surroundings,” explained Chairman Ian Radford. Like Sala Group’s previous golfing event, The Sala Group Golf Classic, the Sala Super League is based on a four-man team format commencing with a shotgun start. Two leagues in one, this amateur golf competition offers contestants the opportunity to play against their teammates in the individual league and work together for the ultimate team prize – a three-day golfing trip to Portugal. Furthermore, the individual winner, and a friend, will also be heading to Portugal. Property Photography IS WHAT WE DO

Mark Burgess

Operating in the United Kingdom and now in Marbella, DWC Property Photography is a new, dynamic company on the property image portfolio scene. Society Marbella meets with owner David Cullinan to hear all about this exciting service.

T

he DWC team captures real estate on camera in order to showcase the true value of a property. With a primary client base of mid to high-end real estate companies, DWC photographs both residential and commercial properties. Owner David Cullinan tells Society Marbella, “Photography is not just an important element of selling or renting a property, it’s fast becoming the most

68

essential.” Indeed, more than 80 per cent of today’s prospective buyers and renters use the Internet to research properties and these prospective buyers rank photography as the most important tool in searching for a home online.

to spend good money on high level, professional photography, yet many estate agents and private home owners are happy to sell or rent multi-million euro properties using sub-standard, amateur photographs?”

During time spent in his native Glasgow, David witnessed the amount of time and money spent on product photography. “I asked myself why a product manufacturer and/or retailer is prepared

David explains, “I also learned that, according to an industry study in 2013, residential property-related searches on Google have grown over 250 per cent over the past four years. This number

represents a massive increase in people shopping for property online before stepping foot in an estate agents office or taking a tour of a new property. Hence the importance of property photography is more profound than ever.” Unlike many of their competitors, photography isn’t a sideline that DWC Property Photography offers with other services, such as renting or selling your property, or building websites. David has put together a team of highly experienced and highly qualified property photographers who are solely dedicated to this craft and currently operate in Marbella and elsewhere on the Costa del Sol. “When someone is aiming to maximize the amount they receive for selling or renting their property, it only makes sense to present an image portfolio that portrays its true value.” David emphasises that “having

an untrained individual snapping shots on an iPhone just isn’t going to cut it in today’s market.” In line with that, DWC only employs the very best professionally trained photographers and videographers, who come armed with the latest professional equipment. “Many agents are content

to take a few pictures with a pointand-click camera. Unfortunately, due to the limitations of such appliances, these cameras are often incapable of capturing the true nature of a property. Spacious rooms become small, dark and uninviting; windows with jaw-dropping views become walls of white light; stunning architecture warps into strange and unappealing angles”. As well as using only the highest quality equipment, David also places great significance on the individuals that make up the DWC team. He states that, “Even an agent with high quality photographic equipment can still produce substandard results. It’s not just having the equipment, but the knowledge of how to use it. A professional photographer has the skill to show a property at its very best.” SOCIETY MARBELLA is delighted to showcase some images from the DWC Property Photography portfolio, which make you feel as though you are looking through a window into a room rather than at a page in a magazine. David concludes, “Great

photography can draw a buyer in. Bad photography can turn them away.”

TORQUE TALK

Our in-depth motoring review

78

Spectacular is too mild a word for McLaren’s P1 hypercar.

A

good measure of the strength of a marque’s DNA is its ability to produce a new car instantly recognisable as a product of that company. The clues lie in how the shape, proportions and details are eloquently described by an in-house design language evolved over time.

TORQUE TALK

Words: Thomas Geiger & Dr. Ian Kuah Photos: Patrick Gosling While mass-market brands like Ford, GM, Renault and the Korean manufacturers seem locked on a relentless course towards interchangeable small hatchback designs, at the other end of the market, the converse is true.

As different as chalk and cheese to the naked eyeball, the latest super sports cars from Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche are each the current visual and technical epitome of their respective company’s heritage and aspirations. In a nutshell, the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder showcase some of the best and most extreme expressions of design and engineering you are likely to see on the production cars of tomorrow. The Porsche 918 Spyder is an elegant and perfectly proportioned design that takes its cue from the 904 GTS of the 1960s, the Carrera GT of 2003, and even the RS Spyder LMP2 racecar of 2005. Arguably the purest, sleekest and least self-conscious Ferrari design since the 246GT Dino of 1968, LaFerrari relies on exquisite proportions and flowing lines rather than in-your face visual impact to create its own kind of presence. In this respect, it is the aesthetic antithesis of its F40 and Enzo ancestors. While all three marques are playing with decks stacked full of aces, and no Jokers in the pack, it is clear that McLaren holds the wild card. All three have long and

79

TORQUE TALK illustrious histories in motorsport, but as a maker of road cars, McLaren is the relative newbie in this company. Having less road car ‘history’ to use as a reference point is not a problem for McLaren, whose Formula One exploits are the stuff of legends. Playing the maverick has always been good for this British marque, and former McLaren chief, Ron Dennis, is the consummate master of the art. It simply makes McLaren the most unpredictable of the three. Just like one of their F1 Championship winners, McLaren’s first road car, the Peter Stevens and Gordon Murray designed F1 of 1992, left the start line on full throttle. The McLaren F1 won the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans in spectacular form on its first ever outing, snatching first, third, fourth and fifth places. Then, three years later, it added to its growing legend with the accolade of fastest production car. McLaren clearly does not do things in half measures.

This is crystal clear today as my eyes run over the futuristic lines of the McLaren P1 sitting on the tarmac at the Bahrain International Circuit. In the warm sunlight, the perfect carbon-fibre bodywork that looks jet black from afar clearly shows off its deep metallic purple hue when you come closer. This subtle colour certainly does full justice to the incredibly complex compound curves that keep your eyeballs busy drinking in the simple and at the same time complex forms and details woven into the P1’s organic shape.

80

I momentarily rewind to the 2012 Paris Motor Show where McLaren’s chief designer, Frank Stephenson, talked me round the orange P1 prototype. Snapping back to the here and now, my impression at the time that Frank was a true design genius and a first amongst equals, is both renewed and reinforced by the pre-production car basking in the sunshine in front of me. To get to this stage, McLaren has had to dig deep into the combined well of expertise accumulated by its road and race teams, adapting existing technologies and inventing some others along the way. The big trick however, was integrating all of these cutting edge ideas into a seamless entity that would raise the pure road legal super sports car bar to an alltime high.

In short, the aim was to not only eclipse the established pinnacle, the Bugatti Veyron, which is essentially a 20th Century machine in technological terms, but also to upstage its contemporary 21st Century rivals, La Ferrari and the 918 Spyder, who are also playing the new hybrid game. In aviation terms, these three newcomers are automotive equivalents of the American, Russian and Chinese fifth generation stealth aircraft - the F-22 Raptor, Sukhoi PAK-FA T-50 and Chengdu J-20 - whose capabilities tower over a world full of fourth generation rivals. Unsurprisingly, the P1 bears more than a passing similarity to such aircraft in the way it manages its airflow, both over and through its bodywork, and the

McLaren engineers set out to ensure state-of-the-art performance from both its active and passive aerodynamics. As cars go, McLaren’s knowledge and application of aerodynamics is second to none, and it is a great delight to learn how they have handled the P1’s active airflow management. McLaren’s chief test driver, Chris Goodwin, explained that the DRS setting reduces the big rear wings angle of attack to reduce drag by up to 23 percent. The top speed on a long straight could be up to 20km/h higher in this mode. With its flat underbody, rear wing and full aero in action, the P1 can generate up to 600kg of downforce at 300km/h!

Like its F1 forbearer, the P1 is a small car by supercar standards. You could even say that it appears shrink wrapped around its mechanicals, with every square-inch of every carbon-fibre panel covering its carbon-fibre core doing a specific job. An unashamed engineering led design, the P1 is the ultimate automotive expression of form follows function. Dubbed the MonoCage by McLaren, this 90kg carbon-fibre core is unique to the P1 and quite different from the one in the 12C. Bearing more than a passing resemblance to the core of a Le Mans sports prototype, this passenger safety cell includes the A-pillars, roof cant rails, snorkel air intake and special mouldings for the IPAS battery and power electronics. The natural question that followed was the possibility of an open version of the

P1. Based on the unique requirements of this centre tub, the answer was an emphatic no as the re-engineering required would not make a sensible business case for a car that McLaren say will return them a tidy profit now that the 375 car production run has found homes around the world. The UK price incidentally, is ÂŁ866,000 a copy, so this is a 1.1 million Euro machine.

TORQUE TALK

Like all hybrid cars, the P1 has two completely different power trains. In the internal combustion engine corner is a development of the 3,799cc M838T biturbo V8 found in the 12C. The major changes are dry sump lubrication, which allows the engine to be fitted lower in the chassis for a lower centre of gravity, and larger turbochargers running at 2.4 bar of boost. The resulting M383TQ motor produces 727hp at 7,300rpm and 720Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. The electric motor is mounted behind the cabin alongside the V8 and produces 176hp and 130Nm of torque. However, step-up gearing gives it an effective torque of 260Nm. McLaren say this 26kg electric motor produces twice the power of the KERS unit used in their Formula One cars. McLaren say their Lithium Ion battery pack has greater continuous power density compared to any rival on sale today. Weighing 96kg, this battery pack sits amidships between the cabin and engine bay, and almost perfectly at the cars centre of gravity. An important difference from other hybrid cars is the fact that McLaren eschew the regenerative braking cycle in the interest of better brake response and feel. Thus, regeneration takes place when you lift off in the higher gears and through using surplus energy from the V8 motor when decelerating. A plug-in hybrid, the P1 can also be charged from a wall socket, via a bespoke charger, taking as little as two hours for a full charge or 10 minutes for a quick charge. A third option is using the Charge button on the dash, which allows the V8 motor to be used as a generator. There are two ways of deploying the power of the electric motor. The first is as a stand-alone power source when you want to just glide through the world with zero emissions in full-electric E-mode. The other uses electric power to boost the V8 engine in maximum attack mode, engaged by using the IPAS button. Then the McLaren P1 bares its fangs and turns into the 916hp monster with 900Nm of

81

TORQUE TALK torque that rumour has it lapped the Nurburgring in close to 6 min 30 sec. Both power sources drive the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. This is the same basic unit as found in the 12C, uprated for greater torque handling and with enhanced cooling. Apart from a larger oil cooler, the unit has two air-blast clutch coolers to keep temperatures down. Range on battery power alone is 12km, and you can even accelerate up to 160km/h in E-mode, although highspeed travel depletes the batteries very quickly. The 0-100km/h time in E-mode is 9.4 sec. At 1,450kg, the P1 is 175kg lighter than the Porsche 918 Spyder. With both power sources engaged and in Race mode, the P1 blasts to 100km/h in 2.8 sec, to 200km/h in 6.8 sec and on to 300km/h in 16.5 sec. The claimed top speed of 350km/h is electronically limited due to the rated capabilities of the 245/35ZR19 and 315/30ZR20 Pirelli PZero Corsa tyres mounted on 9.0J x 19-inch and 11.5J x 20-inch forged alloys. With no limiter the P1’s theoretical Vmax would be over 400km/h.

82

As none of the straights at the 5.412 km long Bahrain International Circuit are remotely long enough there will be no top speed attempts made today. But I have no doubt that our velocities between and through the 15 bends will eclipse those of any road legal supercar that has gone before. The P1’s cosy cabin is a carbon-fibre and Alcantara fest. This makes for a comfortable high grip, low reflection environment; exactly what you need in a hypercar.

With its organic curves giving the impression of a living thing sitting there on the tarmac, the P1 looks like an alien craft that just landed from outer space. If the Vorlon’s from Babylon 5 were to drive a car, this would be it! What makes the P1 all the more of an enigma for onlookers is that running in E-mode we are making no sound at all. The locals here are used to exotics that scream and roar past as their drivers seek to leave a big impression in their wake. But the P1? Nothing! An enigma wrapped in a puzzle for them.

A perfect blend of Spartan but totally functional luxury that puts the vital controls and dials directly in front of the driver, the P1’s workspace highlights perfect ergonomic design and the art of carbon-fibre used as a structural material, as it should be, rather than for decoration.

I decide to put them out of their misery, and engage the petrol motor, which comes to life with a roar. Then the combined might of the flat-plane crank V8 and the electric motor toasts their eyes and ears as we rocket towards the horizon.

The driving position is very similar to the 12C’s, which means well nigh perfect. The only negative comment is that the otherwise well designed touchscreen in the centre console can sometimes be hard to read when bright sunlight hits it from certain angles.

At normal speeds, the P1 is a pussycat. Docile and comfortable, it is easy to drive, and its bubble canopy provides better than average visibility for a midengined supercar. The ride is also good thanks to an uprated version of the active suspension pioneered by the 12C.

Now for the moment of truth. As the P1 glides through the strange mix of ultramodern skyscrapers and Arabesque kitsch against a backdrop of desert, all eyes are on us. Here in Bahrain, the P1 is a stranger in a strange land.

That laid-back cruising ability can lull you into a false sense of security though, and when you drop the hammer the contrast is mind blowing. It is also tempting to use. Like a junkie, once you have experienced the wonderful sound of the V8 engine raging unchecked directly behind your head and the awesome thrust towards the horizon, you want more.

With its organic curves giving the impression of a living thing sitting there on the tarmac, the P1 looks like an alien craft that just landed from outer space. If the Vorlon’s from Babylon 5 were to drive a car, this would be it!

The exhilarating rush of adrenaline that accompanies the might of the engine on full song seems plumbed directly into your veins with a pump connected to your right foot. And that is with the controller set to Normal mode. The power steering is moderately light but full of feel, just like the 12C’s. The brakes are simply incredible. McLaren eschewed regenerative braking as used on the 918 Spyder and LaFerrari, because they wanted maximum pedal response and feel. That is patently obvious from the first application. The brakes are from Akebono, McLaren’s Formula One partners, who developed a bespoke brake solution for the P1. This uses a new design of carbon-ceramic disc capable of absorbing 50-percent more heat energy than existing systems. Six-pot and four-pot calipers clamp the 390mm front, and 380mm rear vented

TORQUE TALK

discs respectively, and the whole system weighs 4kg less than rival carbonceramic brake systems of similar size. We have to go to the track to experience Race mode. Here with DRS only to be used on the straights, the acceleration and the force with which you are held against the seat is just plain silly. We have all used the ‘warp speed’ expression at one time or another to describe the way a really fast car accelerates, but the P1 really deserves it. It makes even the mighty Veyron feel slow on the uptake, but that is a direct function of the fact that the P1 punches 90-percent as hard, but weighs 25-percent less. By itself, the twin-turbo V8 can stumble at times with a modicum of turbo lag, especially in a high gear. But with peak torque available at zero revs, the electric motor fills that gap very effectively to

83

More computing power than the NASA Space Shuttle, more active aerodynamics than a Le Mans racecar, a KERS system with twice the power of the one in McLaren’s Formula 1 racecar, wrapped up in a car you can comfortably drive to the shops.

order, and is a significant strength of this combination.

Formula 1 racecar, wrapped up in a car you can comfortably drive to the shops.

The two rotary switches on the centre console let you adjust the handling and powertrain, with each notch shifting the balance a little more towards the racetrack. If you have 30 seconds to spare, push the Race button and the P1 completely changes its character. The active suspension literally collapses towards the tarmac, the spring rate goes up by 300-percent and the rear wing extends all the way, neatly blocking your view in the rear view mirror. But hey, why worry, as you now have the potential to be the fastest car out there. In Race mode, the P1 takes you right to the knife’s edge. The maximum aero pins the car to the tarmac as the boosted powertrain does its best to fling you at the landscape. This is incredible and ridiculous at the same time, but there is no doubt that were they to stick it in Race mode straightaway, 90-percent of good and experienced drivers would fall off the track on the first lap.

84

Chris Goodwin, who is a very experienced international level race driver, summed it up by saying that the P1 actually has more raw speed and is more fun to drive than many pure bred racing cars.

And yet it all feels quite manageable, at least once you have mentally caught up with the car’s ridiculous pace. This is one machine even a very experienced driver needs to acclimatise to gradually as its sheer abilities are simply beyond what you will have experienced before, or even expect. Think of the McLaren P1 this way. More computing power than the NASA Space Shuttle, more active aerodynamics than a Le Mans racecar, a KERS system with twice the power of the one in McLaren’s

“Last summer I spent two weeks with the P1 on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, and then went down the road to drive a 12C GT3 in the 24 Hours of Spa,” Chris recalled. “The GT3 was so much slower than the P1, this turned out to be the most boring 24 hours of my life!” While a 24-hour race is still missing from my CV, after just one hour in the P1, I fully get what Chris is saying. With the memory of my Porsche 918 Spyder drive and now this, it will be hard to imagine how the experience can be topped. On the other hand, if Ferrari wants to convince me otherwise, they know where I am. Local dealer is Guarnieri.

t is sometimes hard to believe that in the 16th century Andalusia was the power house of Europe. The riches of the Americas flooded it and, like all floods, left a deposit. The vast cathedral in Sevilla, with its magnificent late gothic high altar, is but one example bearing testimony to the economic vibrancy of the region. But by the middle of the 19th century, like the rest of Spain, Andalusia was in decline. George Dennis (1814-1898), bristling with English pride

86

and superiority, put it succinctly when he wrote “…Freedom in England, has brought knowledge, enterprise, wealth, power, in its train. Despotism, religious and political, has rendered Spain ignorant, superstitious, slothful, poor and impotent.” Other travellers were perhaps less bigoted. The 19th century traveller, William Jacob, reported in 1860: “It has not been unattended with fatigues,

privations, and even dangers; but the scenes through which I have passed, the character of the people I have seen, and especially the bold features of the most picturesque country in Europe, will afford recollections which I shall dwell upon with pleasure through the remainder of my life.” Spain had become exotic, and to a very large extent this was on account of a group of people whose origins are

shrouded in mystery. Nevertheless, in the eyes of Europe, they became archetypal “Spaniards”. Nobody really knows

where the gypsies came from. Theories abounded. They were the descendents of Cain; they were the descendents of those who forged the nails used at the Crucifixion; they were the last survivors of Atlantis (a similar claim was made for the native Americans!); all intriguing and fascinating, but ultimately fanciful. It

(1759-1788) One of Spain’s greatest kings and a true figure of the Enlightenment, he introduced numerous reforms into his kingdom designed to weaken the grip of the Church, promote science and university research, facilitate trade and commerce, modernise agriculture, and avoid wars. He banned the derogatory use of the word “gitano” and ordered that they be referred to as “New Castilians”. At the same time he banned their costumes and language, and ordered them to take up professions, penalising any non-gypsy who refused to employ them. Whilst many of the

is most likely that they are the remnants of nomadic hordes from India, travelling through Egypt along the north coast of Africa, whence their name of “Gitanos”, deriving from the Spanish and French words for “Egyptian”.

The English word “gypsy” has a similar provenance. They were certainly in Spain by 1425, and by 1492 were busily engaged in making the projectiles hurled by the armies of Fernando and Isabella against the walls of Granada. This activity received scant recompense from the queen, who in 1499 ordered them to settle down, find stable productive employment, or be exiled. The dour and reclusive Philip II regarded them as a “collection of vicious people drawn from the dregs of Spanish society”. His son, Philip III “The Pious” (1578-1621) expelled the Moriscos (Muslims converted to Christianity in the early 1500s) in 1609, thereby inadvertently opening up previous morisco territory to occupation by the Gitanos. They embraced the unskilled morisco trades, but unlike the Moriscos they tended to be careless about personal hygiene and lived in unwashed squalor. Cervantes (15471616) fulminated: “Gypsies seem to have been born into the world for the sole purpose of being thieves: they were born of thieving parents, they are brought up with thieves, they study in order to be thieves, and they end up past-masters in the art of thieving.” (And this from the nephew of a gypsy!) Commonsense began to make an appearance in the person of Charles III

reforms of Charles III fell into desuetude, these particular ones began to bear fruit, eventually finding a champion in George Borrow (1803-1881) whose “The Zincali” (1841) contributed greatly to increased tolerance and understanding.

Whilst in countries like Moldavia gypsies were still being sold into slavery, Spain saw the establishment of the first gypsy school in 1889 in Granada. From this tiny beginning, the work of Padre Manjón, a saintly

eccentic who travelled everywhere atop a donkey, a large institution developed which, in 1956, was able to sponsor a pilgrimage to Rome to place its work under the protection of Pius XII. The gitanos have managed to maintain a strong cultural identity, and this is testimony to the enduring power of their social ties and innate pride. They maintain their own laws, with secret tribunals being held for wrongdoers, and their children, treated as adults from an early age, are inculcated in a strict obedience to the clan. Whilst not their first language, many still speak Calí, the Spanish dialect of Romany. Nevertheless, they are now far more integrated into Spanish society than in many other countries of Europe. The traditional gypsy areas of Andalusia, like parts of Guadix, now house only those interested in tourist touting. From the middle of the 19th century gypsies began to be aware of their attraction to foreign travellers. By the end of that century, flamenco had become internationally famous, and in the twentieth many of the most famous and (dare one say?) flashy matadors were gypsies. Most Andalusian gypsies now live settled lives (the temporary camps that one sometimes sees tend to be composed of Portugese) but many modern settlements, such as La Chana, in Granada, where the gypsies from Sacromonte were “temporarily” rehoused by the authorities as a result of severe flooding in the ‘60s, regrettably remain poor and ugly. The “Asperones” district of Málaga is yet another example. Yet the people who live there do not appear unhappy. Many Andalusians have inherited from the gypsies the idea of “fatalism”.

The ideal in life is not to work, but to be free. To fret and plan is to be boring, and to miss the joy of living. As Irving Brown (1911-1989) wrote: “Gypsies are not content with spending their last cent: in order to be happy they must defy all sense of practicality”. On reflection, that’s not so bad!

TOP OF THE MORNING… AFTERNOON & EVENING Reviewed by Amber O’Shaughnessy

W

hen Irish sports bar Slainte first opened its door back in December for a launch party that featured Irish dancers and free flowing Guinness, a ripple of excitement spread among residents and tourists of the Costa del Sol. Its optimum location (Slainte is situated on Calle Manolete above the MGM Gym) makes the venue a sure-fire hit for 2014 but what about the all important food factor? The Society Marbella team heads into the gastropub this month to put Slainte’s classic pub grub menu to the ultimate test. With walls painted a patriotic tweedgreen, brown rustic chesterfield armchairs and sepia photographs, Slainte is an inviting option on a cold winter’s night. We pile in and set up camp at one of the booths, which boasts its very own HD plasma TV. In fact the layout of Slainte is such that wherever you are sitting, you will have an uninterrupted view of whatever football game or boxing match is being aired thanks to the impressive twenty-odd plasma TVs that make up the venue. It seems rude not to order a round of Guinness for everyone in the party so we do just that and begin to peruse the menu. It is clear that Slainte’s owners want to celebrate hearty Irish classics with their menu, which features plates such as Fisherman’s Pie and Steak & Kidney Pie. Such dishes come almost as a welcome relief from the endless number of restaurants along the Coast that offer more generic Mediterranean options. With a luxurious sip of Guinness, I make up my mind and order the Golden Chicken Tenders, followed by a Full

90

COSTA CUISINE Rack of Ribs with Hickory BBQ sauce for the main course. My partner in Guinness-fuelled crime opts for the Nachos (we decide to share our starters between us) and the delicious sounding, creamy Fisherman’s Pie. Waiting for our starters gives us an opportunity to survey the venue in its entirety – it is brand spanking new, so we figure we’re allowed a good nose around. Aside from the plasma screens that adorn the walls, Slainte also consists of a crèche for children, a poolroom and an open kitchen, which allows guests to view their food as it is being prepared. Our first round of culinary delights arrives at the table and we tuck into the Chicken Tenders, which are breaded in Slainte’s own special mix and then fried, creating a delicious blend of soft and crunchy. The Tenders taste simply delicious when dipped in the honey and mustard mayo that comes with the dish. The Nachos are very tasty; a generous dollop of guacamole, sour cream and melted cheese makes every mouthful of tortilla chips a gastronomic joy! We proceed onto the main event, as a pie dish brimming with fluffy cheddar mash and oozing a creamy white sauce arrives at the table. Filled with copious amounts of salmon, cod and prawns, the Fisherman’s Pie is the ultimate winter warmer. The Rack of Ribs is stacked up into a decadent tower of sticky BBQ sauce and succulent meat. They taste excellent and find the perfect partner in a newspaper-lined pot of chunky chips and homemade coleslaw. The dessert options are just way too tempting, so we request the Vanilla Cheesecake and Apple Crumble with Custard. These sweets do not disappoint. The hefty hunk of Cheesecake is surprisingly light and is consumed in an instant. The Apple Crumble provides the perfect finish with its hard crunchy topping and soft sweet apple under layer. It is the perfect size too –neither overwhelmingly large nor frustratingly small. We are seriously impressed; with its flawless service, laidback ambience and - most importantly - top pub grub, 2014 will be an exciting year for Slainte. The only thing left on our to do list is to return to the restaurant for its much spoken about Sunday Lunch. We ask our waiter to book us in but he tells us they are fully booked for the following Sunday so we make sure to confirm the table for the weekend after. Until next time Slainte thanks for having us. Oh, and one more Guinness for the road!

The sweet Aroma OF SUCCESS

W

and the Aroma slogan “Fragrant and flavoursome Indian cuisine at affordable prices” promised just the kind of evening out that we were looking for after a busy week.

The staff members have a good idea exactly how to attract customers

One of the many things that we love about Indian restaurants is the wonderful smell that emerges from the kitchen and Aroma delivered as soon as we entered the restaurant, which is conveniently situated in the El Pilar area of Benavista. The main problem

e have never made any secret of the fact that we love a really good Indian meal and the glowing reports that we had been hearing about Aroma in Estepona’s popular Benavista, which has only opened recently, meant that it wouldn’t be long before the Society Marbella team decided to pay a visit one evening after work.

92

is that we had been too busy to eat lunch, so the scents that surrounded us resulted in a few growling stomachs. After being shown to a very pleasant table well away from the rapidly cooling night air, we asked for the menus and were not only impressed by the range of dishes but also by the price. This night out would not ruin our bank balances and we also liked the décor, which showed that the Aroma team had expended a considerable

COSTA CUISINE amount of energy in ensuring that their clients would enjoy using their powers of vision, as well as their taste and smell. It probably would have taken us longer to decide on our dishes and we were all having a wonderful time scanning the menu, but hunger won out in the end. Our usual policy is to share a range of dishes, so as our starters we ordered large plates of Tandoori Mushrooms, which, as their name suggested, had been soaked in a delicious marinade and cooked in a tandoor. To accompany this vegetarian treat we opted for something more carnivorous and chose the Chicken Hariyali, which consisted of chicken pieces that had been marinated in a spinach, mint and coriander sauce. Both of these eagerly awaited hunger busters were absolutely delicious and were a big hit. To accompany these spicy dishes we ordered a large bottle each of con and sin gas. One of our party of three is a vegetarian and we sometimes find that the veggie offerings are a little bit of a let-down. While the rest of the group has dozens of dishes from which to choose, our vegetarian friend often has to make do with some very dull food, so she was delighted to be able to eat very well at Aroma. For our main courses we carnivores ordered Lamb Rogan Josh, that famous Kashmiri dish which was cooked to perfection and served with yoghurt, Garlic Chilli Chicken, which consisted of deep-fried diced chicken in a garbanzo flour batter and cooked with a delicious garlic and sweet chilli sauce and Vegetable Biryani, cooked with tomatoes and onions and served with basmati rice. We also chose some Garlic Naan Bread to accompany the dishes because…let’s be honest here and admit that we like to use this to mop up any leftover sauce. When we are this hungry and the food is this good it seems such a pity to sacrifice great cooking to anything as mundane as basic table manners.

With the exception of our vegetarian colleague we tried all the dishes and were impressed by the quality of the food: the Rogan Josh was cooked so perfectly that the lamb had attained that ‘melt in the mouth’ sensation that is a mark of truly excellent cuisine, while the Garlic Chilli Chicken added a new dimension to the old favourites that you can normally anticipate in a familyfriendly Indian restaurant. The Vegetable Biryani was also impressive; here was proof that vegetarian dishes can be just as exciting as their carnivorous counterparts. While we relaxed with a cup of coffee we noted that the restaurant was beginning to fill up. Despite only having been open for a few months, the buzz is clearly spreading. We say, don’t hang around – make a date at Aroma while you can still find a table. Aroma Local 22. Urb. El Pilar (Exit opposite Grand Plaza Hotel) Tel: 951 388 336 aromaestepona.com

Bhavesh and Rajvi enjoyed a magical three day celebration filled with fun, family and friendship.

MEANT TO BE…

We were young, crazy and care free at 17 years old. We knew of each other through friends and in the few times we would bump into each other I would sometimes get a wink and a smile and he would get a little wave back. Who would have known that 17 years later, I would be married to him!

apart and we became quite busy in our own lives but we would call each other now and again over the years just to catch up until one day we decided to meet, enjoying each others company so greatly we began to spend more and more time together before falling completely and utterly in love.

Two years later, we had been well acquainted with each other’s family and friends and we had been on a few holidays together and we were definitely ready to take the next step in our relationship. It was just a case of him popping the question. Last September we

went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do.

It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had Michknown ael and each other. morning, the blessing ceremony in the afternoon followed by cocktails and the reception party into the night. All were outdoors, the weather was amazing and all this infused with the surroundings and the ‘buzz’ our guests came with made it truly the best wedding, I myself, had ever been to, and I still can’t believe that it was my own.

and then he asked me to marry him - my response was a mixture of laughter and tears, and of course, I said ‘Yes!’.

We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.

I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…

The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

I wanted a wedding with a difference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holiday at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

After the sounds of the Spanish guitar and a few champagne cocktails later, guests were ushered to the reception on the outdoor terrace surrounded by olive trees with suspended Chinese lanterns and wicker hearts. Surprises for our guests, and our selves, were ‘wow’ factors starting with flamenco dancing, speeches and performances from our loved ones to large glow sticks on our entrance, a live bongo player over a UK DJ spinning the best beats and then a firework finale.

British Montessori School to hold fundraising gala evening Photos by Agata Jenson

F

ollowing the astounding success of Marbella Montessori School since its opening in 2009, the school will be holding a Fundraising Gala Evening on Saturday 8 March 2014, to celebrate the recent acquisition of its new premises and to provide a donation to its chosen charity, UNICEF. The Gala will commence at 7.30pm and will be held at the new property - which was previously owned by Hollywood stars, Audrey Hepburn and Mel Ferrer – close to San Pedro de Alcantara. The evening will include live music, a luxury auction, raffle, cocktail reception and exhibitions

by local businesses and sponsors. Existing parents, local businesses, future parents and the press are welcome to attend the Gala to see how amazing this school will be and learn more about the outstanding Montessori method.

The school has acquired a superb country finca with 400 square metres of internal floor space, set within 6000 square metres of manicured gardens, orchard, woodland and swimming pool. The new premises is scheduled to open in April 2014.

Marbella Montessori School, which currently provides high quality care and education for children aged from 12 months to six years, quickly established a demand for traditional British primary education up to the age of 11 years, in accordance with the Montessori ethos of independence, self- motivation and personalised learning.

If you are interested in attending the event to see the new school first-hand and enjoy a fabulous evening of entertainment and fundraising, send an email to jemmalewis@hotmail.co.uk to request an invitation.

Introducing… Pintxos

E

l Rincon de la Sala delivers San Sebastian ‘haute cuisine in miniature’ with their latest offering, ‘pintxos’. Pintxos literally translated means ‘spike’ as pintxos are generally held together with a toothpick. These bitesize morsels are the perfect way of sampling a variety of different flavours and can be enjoyed at the bar with a casual glass of wine or whilst seated in the restaurant or on the al fresco terrace. Whether you wish to sample the cold delights including Fresh Crab Croissants and Jamon Serrano from the counter, or you prefer to order off the blackboard, El Rincon de la Sala’s pintxos offer miniature mouthfuls to suit all palates. Devour everything from Traditional Spanish Tortilla and Grilled Goats Cheese with Pedro Ximenez to Serrano Ham topped with a Fried Quails Egg and Grilled Steak dusted with Rock Salt. Alongside the vast selection of pintxos, El Rincon de la Sala’s daytime menu offers delicious salads, sandwiches and tapas including Prawn Pil Pil and their famous mini burgers.

When asked to describe pintxos, Executive Chef, Ramon Benitez Ramirez replied, “small bites offering an explosion of flavour designed to satisfy even the most discerning appetite,” if that description doesn’t tempt you, nothing will!

Enjoy a memorable Basque journey of flavours, Monday to Saturday from 12 noon until 7pm at El Rincon de la Sala. For reservations or further information please call 951 506 249.

Be transported Back to the 80’s at the San Roque Theatre

T

he talented students of Sotogrande International School are preparing their latest musical masterpiece, which will be performed on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd of March at Teatro Juan Luis Galiardo, San Roque. On the second evening of performances the audience is invited to attend dressed up in 1980s clothes to be part of the fun.

‘Back to the 80’s’ - in association with Jyske Bank - is a “totally awesome” musical that tells the story of the senior class of William Ocean High School that graduated in the 1980s, as remembered and seen through the eyes of Corey Palmer, who is now 30-something. This pays homage to the music, fashion, films and TV of this great era, including high-energy dance routines, some of the most popular songs ever written and even a Star Wars-inspired dream sequence. It will delight and amuse an audience of any age and the exceptional calibre of performers takes this far beyond a traditional school play. There will be a free matinee performance for local schools, followed by the two performances open to the general public on 21st and 22nd March.

Videola in Paniagua, Boutique Dani in Marbella and Look Your Best fitness studio in Puerto Banüs and are priced at 5€ for standard entry and 10€ for VIP tickets. VIP tickets include a pre-theatre drinks reception at the school’s boarding house in San Roque and transport to and from the theatre. There will be a free bus service from Marbella to the theatre on 22nd March included in the 10€ ticket price. Fifty per cent of ticket sales will be donated to The Kindred Project, the school’s a student-led Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), to support their mission of promoting education as a force for good. . ed Kodiak has been selected as the recipient of a free professional website designed and built by Redline Company. Although newly incorporated, the company is already proving a success commercially and ethically by providing contracts only to Spanish suppliers.

Red Kodiak is a procurement company, which provides furniture, fixtures and equipment to national and international clients using only Spanish suppliers, thereby bringing in much needed orders to such companies. They fly the flag for Spanish products, which are currently very competitively priced against Indian and Chinese businesses and better quality, as they adhere to EU manufacturing standards. Redline Company held the competition as a way of giving something back to the community on their nine-year anniversary as the

Line Lyster Managing Director of Redline Company says, “We would like to thank everyone who entered the competition, we were very impressed with each and every application. However, we particularly like Red Kodiak’s model of providing Spanish suppliers with contracts from international companies, thereby potentially saving hundreds of Spanish

Kathrin Lündsted, Managing Director of Red Kodiak explains, “We are delighted to have been chosen. We’ve already met Redline, attended a photo shoot and discussed the website.
