PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Well, hello September! How did that happen? Hope that you have enjoyed your summer as much as we did. There was so much to do but I think that if you asked the Society team about their favourite part we would all agree that it was Tom Jones’s performance at the Starlite Festival. We managed to snaffle some tickets for it and we can report that the old Welsh Devil still has a gleam in the eyes and the famous voice could still fill the Rhondda Valley. According to the women in our party he is also still a Sex Bomb – although I managed to stop them throwing their underwear at the stage. A small victory, I think you will agree. Another person who has a showbiz milestone to celebrate is the Princess of Pop, Kylie Minogue. She has come a long way since Neighbours; after starting out as one of Stock, Aitken & Waterman’s stable of bubblegum pop artistes she has managed to make her own way through the shark-infested waters of the music industry for an amazing 25 years and she still shows no sign of slowing down – or of ‘retiring’ her very famous derrière. Good for her, we say! We caught up with her as she celebrates her quarter century in the music business and she spilled the beans about her latest album and her plans for the future. This month’s issue of Society Marbella has a very definite emphasis on food and drink – only the very best, of course. We are so ridiculously spoiled in this part of Spain with some truly amazing restaurants catering for every kind of world cuisine for a variety of pockets from ‘last day of my holiday and I’ve run out of travellers’ cheques’ to ‘I’ve just won the Euro Millions!’ We were lucky enough to visit four very different eateries this month and you can read all about it inside. Apart from reviews of The Boardwalk, Le Petit Bistro and Arabia, we also include a special feature on ‘Paella’s y Mas’, a venue which is described by its owners, Javier and Todd, as an Andalusian brasserie. The boys have more than 30 years of experience in the industry, so if you can’t imagine what an Andalusian brasserie might be like, we can thoroughly recommend that you pay a visit as soon as possible; believe us, it’s unlike any other establishment on the Coast! As we say goodbye to this year’s batch of summer tourists (where would we be without them?) we still have plenty to look forward to – great weather, loads of fun activities and just a little bit more space on the beach. That’s life on the Coast for you!

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT
Kylie is back and she’s enjoying creating music more than ever
The Best is Yetto Come By Amber O’Shaughnessy
“I had what I can only describe as an epiphany,”
Kylie begins, as her 12th studio album, Kiss Me Once takes up residence in charts around the world. “I saw a horizon and for the first time I could remember, there was nothing on it. I knew I could make some changes, and I knew I needed to make changes. Big changes.” Back in 2012, Kylie Minogue marked a quarter of a century in pop with K25, a twelve-month-long series of events, releases and retrospectives that included two albums, a book celebrating two and a half decades’ varied fashion endeavours, a tour, and a surprise single release in the shape of ‘Timebomb’, which became her 44th Top 40 hit. Then there were two films, a box-set that took in every one of her 45 singles, from ‘I Should Be So Lucky’ through ‘Better The Devil You Know’ to ‘Confide In Me’, ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ and ‘I Believe In You’, then finally ‘Timebomb’ itself. Having also performed at events as diverse as The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Sydney Mardi Gras, Kylie finished off 2012 by taking the stage at London’s
18
O2 to perform ‘Especially For You’ with Jason Donovan for the first time in two decades. If that year’s events make for exhausting reading, the curating process Kylie oversaw was something else. It was, she says now, a bit like a trip to the bottom of the garden. “Do you have a shed where you store everything?” she asks. “You go there for one thing, and the next thing you know you’re sidetracked, you’re going through all your stuff and emotionally pummelled.” This feeling was particularly acute when 25 years of

imagery flashed before her eyes for the Kylie / Fashion photo book. “I was seeing pictures of this young girl. Like anyone would, I felt nostalgic. But I also felt that I wish I could have told her the things it took me a long time to learn. Finally, there were feelings of pride, and also wonder, thinking: ‘Did I really do that? Wow, how DID I do that?’” Then, when K25 was all over, Kylie saw that empty horizon and made a change. Significantly, she parted ways, on the very best of terms, with the manager who’d overseen her career since she invaded millions of living rooms in a pair of dungarees. For an artist who never stopped working, that void should have been scary. “Actually, it felt like an enlightened moment,” Kylie smiles. “I felt really calm, because the clarity was there. I’ve never had anything like that before. I may never have it again. But there it was.”
CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT
it resonates even deeper. The song was quite magical for me.” One of the new doors that opened led to the recording studio of Pharrell Williams, a man whose own renaissance strikes a similar chord to Kylie’s own resurgence at the beginning of the 2000s. “He’s always been ‘it’ for me,” she smiles. “I wanted to work with him years ago and that didn’t happen, and that’s a bonus of being with Roc Nation, they can just put in a phone call.” The studio set-up was, at first, quite alarming. “I prefer keeping it simple but he had loads of people around. Next thing you know, Miley Cyrus has rocked up, showing us her first twerking iPhone video. She was like, ‘Hey, you should do one of these’. I was like, ‘Perhaps not’.”
“Pharrell literally sits with his synthesiser, puts all the beat in, adds chords, writes it, you sing it and it’s done”
Pharrell’s direct hitmaking sensibility (“he literally sits with his synthesiser, puts all the beat in, adds chords, writes it, you sing it and it’s done”) may have been the perfect manifestation of Kylie’s empty horizon epiphany, but as doors continued to open, album sessions looked in danger of spiralling out of control. True to her new ideology, Kylie seized control and once again found
One thing Kylie did know was that she was done with retrospectives. “K25 was great to celebrate and reflect,” she admits, but afterwards she knew that making a career out of looking back - understandable for any artist with 25 years under their belt - just wasn’t for her. “I thought, ‘I’m not ready to be that. I’m not ready to be a heritage artist. That can happen in another 20 years.’” In the spirit of looking forward she signed with Roc Nation management, and doors were suddenly unlocked. ‘Kiss Me Once’, bursting with pulsing synths, sweeping strings, a distinctly romantic energy and a huge amount of self confidence, is the sound of those doors being kicked wide open. Early on in the sessions ‘Into The Blue’, which became the album’s lead single, quickly established itself as this new album’s lightning rod. “When I recorded it, I was at the start of something new,” Kylie recalls. “I did feel as if I was launching myself into the blue. I was very, very aware of where I’ve been, and I was being realistic about where I think I am in my life and my career, and I was accepting of that. I was moving forward: business wise with management, but on a personal level

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT clarity, this time in the form of songwriter Sia Furler. “I’d done two sessions with her,” Kylie remembers. “On the third session in LA I asked her if she would come on board and executive produce the album and be my partner.” Sia, at this point, had recently become the world’s hottest go-to hitmaker. “I honestly didn’t know what she would say - but she said yes straight away. We jumped up and down and hugged and I was very happy.” Sia’s perspective on the sprawling sessions resulted in some unexpected feedback: there wasn’t an album here. By Sia’s reckoning, there were at least four. “Sia said there was a pop album, a more indie-leaning album, another album which was more of an EDM type of affair, plus one which I suppose you could loosely describe as ‘urban’ although I say I’m not remotely urban. I’m suburban. Maybe my next few years are going to be quite easy: I’ve done all the hard work, now I’ve got a few albums in the bank!” As Kylie’s fans, peers and even critics know all too well, the chance of Kylie putting her feet up for more than a year is fairly remote. For a start there’s the 33-dates-and-counting Kiss Me Once tour, which Kylie’s currently right in the middle of. “Songs become fleshed out when you perform them live,” she explains, “so it’s a really exciting time. It’s not like living in the studio, listening to songs a trillion times on my laptop; it becomes a very different experience when first I get to release them, then later on perform them live. It’s like you let them go - you allow them to fly away and fulfil their intended purpose.” With the success of Kiss Me Once it feels, just like it has felt during all the best bits of her extraordinary career, that Kylie is completely comfortable with who she is as a person, where she is in her career and what she is as a pop entity. Kylie has been present in the lives of so many for so long, with so many different pockets of fans around the globe each with their different expectations, that one might excuse Kylie if she focused on just one area of
her work. But early feedback for Kiss Me Once suggests that she might have pulled off something of a modern pop miracle: keeping everyone happy, not least herself. “It took me a long time to realise that what I am is a number of things,” she says now. “And it took a lot of hard work to get to the stage where people would allow me to be all those things. The idea that if you’re one thing, you can’t also be another: I just didn’t get it. If someone asked me to choose
“If someone asked me to choose which Kylie to be, I’d have to choose the Kylie I am: every Kylie. I’m not doing anything by halves at the moment.”
which Kylie to be, I’d have to choose the Kylie I am: every Kylie. I’m not doing anything by halves at the moment.” In the spirit of not doing things by halves, in 2013 Kylie signed up for the 2014 run of BBC One’s The Voice, thrusting herself back into British living rooms. It’s a show with whose premise she half agrees. “For any artist the voice is important,” she says, “but when it’s past that stage of concentrating on a voice, it’s no longer about one thing - it’s about everything. I mean, maybe they wouldn’t have turned their chairs around for me if I was brave enough to go on that show when I first started out - but hey, I did okay.” After 68 million record sales Kylie has, indeed, done okay: proof of one of pop’s more intense ironies, that those who feel least certain of future success frequently enjoy lengthier careers than those whose music is self-consciously designed to last. “I didn’t even think about longevity at the beginning,” Kylie recalls. “I was just happy and probably quite stunned that I was in the music industry at all. It took me a long time to really, truly believe I was part of it.” In 2014, with Kiss Me Once reinforcing her reputation as one of the defining stars of the modern pop era, Kylie’s such an integral part of the fabric of pop that it’s hard to imagine the place without her. That trip to the emotional garden shed back in 2012 might have allowed her to take stock of her achievements to date, but K27 has all the signs of being Kylie Minogue’s best year yet.

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon divorce is a ‘done deal’
Celebrity Big Brother It’s back! Celeb BB hit our TV screens for another explosive series last month. Housemates include The Hills star and American socialite Stephanie Pratt, former TOWIE cast member Lauren Goodger, ‘bad boy of Ballroom’ a.k.a Strictly’s James Jordan and ex-Gladiator/ Kelly Brook’s fiancé David Macintosh. The motley bunch is no doubt set to entertain and amuse viewers for the duration.

Notorious pop diva Mariah Carey and her husband of six years Nick Cannon are allegedly facing an imminent divorce. TMZ reported that the pop diva was left reeling after Cannon revealed a list of five celebrities he had slept with live on air at radio station Power 106. Mariah was said to have been left ‘humiliated’ by the whole episode. The couple reportedly split back in May and it seems that Mariah’s personal Instagram account reflects the break up – she has not posted a photograph of the whole family together for over four months despite being very active on the social media website. Her most recent posting showed a book entitled “Me”, fuelling reports that Mariah is going solo from now on.

The big stories everyone is chatting about this month
Hot Hollywood couple Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Martin Couple of the moment J-Law and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin were spotted having an intimate afternoon tea in New York last month for the 24-year old actress’s birthday. The Daily Mail reports that the date was said to be ‘low-key and super romantic’. Rumours of a romance first surfaced after the couple was seen in deep conversation at the afterparty for Coldplay’s Albert Hall gig in London on July 1. Meanwhile, Gwyneth Paltrow has also found love following her split from Martin; the actress is reportedly dating Glee executive producer and co-creator Brad Falchuk.
Tension between Girls Aloud bandmates… again! The various rifts and rivalries between the Girls Aloud members have been widely reported for many years now and all five ladies make no secret of the fact that they wouldn’t be friends had they not been pushed into a band together. Nadine Coyle, in particular, has been rumoured to be at loggerheads with the other four girls. Now, only after a year of the band having split, Coyle has admitted she doesn’t miss her other band-mates and will not be meeting up with them during her stay in the UK. Kimberley Walsh, another member of the group, wrote in her autobiography, “With the constant whispers of Nadine’s imminent solo deal, we felt as if she was calling the shots, and that the band’s future was in her hands… It was hard for us to accept her need to separate herself from the rest of us.”
The tragic suicide of Robin Williams
Last month it was reported that Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams died aged 63 in his home in California. Williams was found “unconscious and not breathing” when emergency services arrived at the scene. Spokesman for the actor says he had been battling severe depression in the months prior to his death. Williams’s wife paid tribute to her late husband in the following statement on the morning following his death: “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

T
he Egyptians referred to aloe vera as the ‘plant of immortality’. It wasn’t so long ago that it was a well-kept secret, but these days it can be found as an ingredient in everything from toothpaste to after-sun lotion, from yoghurt to tea. In fact it has been used for therapeutic purposes by many cultures for thousands of years. Here are some of the reasons it is such a key ingredient in so many skincare products. Aloe Barbedensis, more commonly referred to simply as aloe vera, is a gelatine-like plant food extracted from the leaves of the aloe plant. It can be applied topically, even in its rawest form, and is effective in stimulating new cell production. It has been found to block up to 30 per cent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays when applied to skin. Its constituent, aloin, gives it this property. It is not used as a sun block but rather in after-sun lotion to counteract any sunburn.
significant improvement whilst fewer than six per cent treated with a placebo showed any improvement at all. It has even been shown that aloe vera successfully treats nappy rash, which demonstrates that it is both gentle and effective.

Aloe Vera contains close to 200 nutritional elements, including minerals, vitamins, amino acids, enzymes, and other nutrients...
Although you may think that digestive health is not linked to skin care, aloe vera is one of the best aids to digestion and can also ensure more toxins are removed from the body, improving the skin from within. Why not try VitaBella’s unique Anti Ageing Face Mask and Face Cream, which has been shown to increase skin hydration naturally, by over 20 per cent from just one mask?
It has anti-inflammatory effects and can be used to treat minor burns, grazes and to reduce the appearance of scars. Applying aloe vera has been shown to stimulate enzyme action in skin tissue, which encourages the cells that produce collagen. It is especially effective as a skin cleansing and detoxifying agent and has been shown to penetrate up to seven layers of the skin, so the effects go deep. It is an extremely beneficial moisturiser, as it increases water retention in the skin. Around 99 per cent of the aloe vera plant consists of water but the remaining one per cent is extremely powerful, containing close to 200 nutritional elements, including minerals, vitamins, amino acids, enzymes, and other nutrients that work in synergy to nourish the skin and body. Aloe vera has been shown in studies to relieve the symptoms of psoriasis. In one study, 83 per cent of those patients who were treated with aloe vera gel showed

Beat the heat with Ayurveda
Why not try something different to help you cool down?
by some health practitioners as a last resort.
Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of holistic health which aims to create harmony between a person’s body and nature through herbal treatments, personalised diet, yoga, breathing and therapeutic massage.
There are, however, other non-invasive methods to solve or reduce the problem. According to The Daily Telegraph’s website meditation is the key factor in treating illnesses such as depression and could be applied to many other health challenges like insomnia.
In Ayurveda, summer is Pitta season (no, not the type you eat!) Pitta is one of the three Ayurvedic types of energy we have in our body and the summer is governed by the Pitta Dosha. During this hot period of year, Pitta is easily aggravated due to high temperatures outside, causing a range of negative symptoms in the body. Signs of an aggravated Pitta can include skin irritations, fever, inflammation, as well as such feelings as anger and jealousy. To help pacify and rebalance your Pitta, here are some simple tips to help you stay cool this season: Be mindful about food: concentrate mainly on sweet, bitter and astringent tastes. Up your Greens: there is no better time to indulge in delicious salads than the summer. Fill up your fridge with green leafy vegetables which are packed full of goodness. Hydrate: keeping well hydrated is important but if water is not your thing why not try some delicious alternatives like coconut water, aloe vera juice, saffron or cumin flavoured water. Stimulate your senses: burning oils or using sprays containing refreshing rose, neroli, jasmine and orange will help cool your body instantly - and they smell great too! Discover herbs: Ayurvedic herbs such as neem and manjistha have a cooling and skin-improving effect. Stretch it out: practising yoga in the hot weather might seem like the last thing you want to do, but cooling, breathing exercises like Shitali breath and twisted yoga postures can actually help release heat from the body.

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of holistic health which aims to create harmony between a person’s body and nature...
There are many causes of insomnia, the most common being stress and anxiety. Meditation can help by slowing down the brainwaves. John Levine, Australian composer of alpha brain music called Alphamusic has applied meditation techniques and years of experience of how the human brain works to his music and has made an ingeniously successful tool that already has helped thousands of people worldwide who have suffered from stress, anxiety, depression and, most importantly, insomnia. Keep your cool: treat your skin to Ayurveda Pura’s organic skincare range, Holistic Essential Re-Fresh Formula, especially designed for Pitta Doshas and ideal for sensitive skin. Meditation music as a natural solution for insomnia: Do you have any of these problems? Difficulty in falling asleep? Do you wake up frequently? Wake too early? Fall asleep during the day? Suffer from forgetfulness? These are some of the typical symptoms of insomnia, today’s silent pandemic. One in three worldwide are being diagnosed as insomniacs. In the United States this means nearly 64 million. In the United Kingdom 7.5 million are said to wrestle with the same problem. The most dreadful thing is that these statistics are rising. Do nothing? Well you’re in good company. It’s totally understandable. In today’s world people are so stressed about losing their jobs or fighting with other work issues that they seem not to care much about what is happening to themselves. Playing Alphamusic in the background allows you to meditate without actually meditating. The music, as the author says, meditates for you and more importantly saves you time; now you can perform other activities whilst the music plays in the background. “You don’t have to sit down close your eyes and do nothing,” adds Levine. EEG photographs show that Alphamusic has been able to slow the brainwaves down. Danuta Andrzejak, an EEG technician with over 25 years experience, is more than convinced Alphamusic affects brainwave activity. As the brainwaves slow down the hormones in the body may change from the ‘fight or flight’ adrenalins in Beta state to the calm serotonins in the Alpha state to the melatotonins in the Theta state. Sue Rugg, who tried various methods including homeopathy and sleeping pills in her desperate bid to beat wakefulness already had a collection of what she thought to be similar music but didn’t even manage to hear the end of the Levine’s ‘Orange Grove Siesta’ CD; she’s been falling asleep within the first few minutes every time. SHOWSTOPPER CHRIS BROWN ROCKS AQWA MIST Photos by Justin Moore Chris Brown brought Puerto Banús superclub Aqwa Mist to a standstill last month. Brown, currently one of the world’s hottest and most talked about R&B and hip-hop stars, flew in by private jet from St. Tropez at 2am. The star tweeted to his 13.5 million followers on Twitter, “Team Breezy, I’m in Marbella Spain tonight!!! I’ll be @Aqwa Mist!” At 4.30am, the talented 25 year-old took to the stage and performed some of his best tracks live to a packed venue of fans – some of whom had travelled from as far away as China and the US. ‘Beautiful People’, ‘Loyal’, ‘Forever’ and ‘International Love’ were among the songs Brown sang, as well as hits ‘Kiss Kiss’, ‘Turn Up The Music’, ‘Run It’ and ‘Don’t Wake Me Up’. Straight after his performance Brown posed for a few photos with fans before jetting off in his private plane as dawn broke over Marbella.

TORQUE TALK
Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the Mercedes S500 & S63 AMG Coupe
79
TORQUE TALK
In design terms, Mercedes is the only player in this segment that has truly succeeded in bringing luxury car design into the 21st Century.
T
he anticipation has been building since we first saw the gorgeous Mercedes S-Class Coupe concept car at last year’s Frankfurt IAA. This sleek coupe was clearly the brightest star at the Show, a rare design that strikes a perfect balance between classical proportions and a dramatic interpretation of the future. The widely acclaimed W222 S-Class saloon was a strong message that the Mercedes design team had finally reached its stride with their new styling vocabulary. The C217 S-Class Coupe takes this to the next level in car that plays by a less formal set of rules. Indeed, the S-Class Saloon and Coupe have two very different roles in life. But
80
if a design language is to be strong and easy to read, then its use of form and detail have to be both clearly defined as well as adaptable if they are to support their messages. A world-class luxury saloon must exude gravitas, and elegance like an exquisitely tailored Savile Row business suit. A Coupe on the other hand, is more akin to a sports jacket from an haute couture tailor, who cuts the finest cloth to reflect a relaxed chic. The Italians have the perfect word for this; sprezzatura, the art of effortless superiority. Then there is the question of dynamism. Some cars are able to convey a sense of authority even at rest, but in doing so
also look as static as a public building. The fine cars from Bentley and RollsRoyce fall into this category, as do the Audi A8 and BMW 7-Series. In design terms, Mercedes is the only player in this segment that has truly succeeded in bringing luxury car design into the 21st Century. And this is not purely a cosmetic exercise. In terms of on-board technology, they have also left their rivals half a generation behind. Thus, both the Mercedes S-Class Saloon and Coupe share a strong sense of dynamism that catches your eye in way that charges the brain with the notion that the car is moving or is about to move.
TORQUE TALK On the S-Class saloon, this sense of movement comes from the interplay between the two strong sweeping lines on its flanks. The primary line emanates from the front wings, slicing through the doors in a downward trajectory, while the second rises from the front sill areas, arcing upwards and aft into the rear bumper line. Another instinctively perceived corollary of these bold, sweeping, semi-convergent lines is a reduction in the visual bulk of the car.
The surface graphics of the S-Class Coupe take this to the next level, with a softer version of that downward sweeping line playing against the upward sweeping line now highlighted by a polished trim strip. The Coupe’s lower roofline features the traditional Mercedes pillarless side glass, and its squatter, more purposeful stance is emphasised by the horizontal chrome feature strip spanning the bootlid and the tops of the rear light clusters. The big front grille with its huge threepointed star and single horizontal bars is the epitome of the Mercedes sport
grille. But where the grille was flush with the bodywork on the Coupe’s less sculpted C215 predecessor, it is now a three-dimensional element, thrusting forwards into the airstream as part of an organically shaped nose cone that extends downwards into a curvaceous front spoiler. Featuring 47 Swarovski crystals in each unit, the LED headlamp clusters that flank the grille are like a pair of big, alert eyes. Of the three smaller air intakes below the bumper line, only the central intake is functional on the S500 Coupe, whose 4,663cc bi-turbo V8 motor does not have quite the ravenous appetite for cooling air of its more powerful AMG cousin. In the past, it was not uncommon for the S-Class saloon and its CL sister to
81
TORQUE TALK
share many interior components like the dashboard and console. With quality and customer satisfaction back on top of the agenda, the Board of Daimler is not so cynical these days, and they seem to have reigned in their cost accountants. Surprise and delight are here in full measure, with a fresh approach to cabin design that shows an appropriately lighter touch to the dashboard architecture than in the saloon. This is underpinned by unimpeachable build quality, with the use of top quality materials as pleasing to the fingertips as they are to the eyes. The widescreen electronic displays that sit cheek-by-jowl in the new dashboard are identical to the saloons, and that is no bad thing since they are the class of the industry. With 455hp between 5,250 and 5,500rpm, and 700 Nm of torque from 1,800 to 3,500rpm, the potent biturbo V8 motor is smooth, refined and willing. Partnered with the stalwart 7G-Tronic gearbox, it thrusts the 2,090kg 4Matic version of the S500 Coupe to 100km/h in 4.6 sec, and rapidly on to its electronically limited 250km/h top speed. All the S500 test cars featured 4Matic, but as production ramps up, the rearwheel-drive version will follow in both LHD and RHD guise, the latter once again frustratingly missing the 4Matic option. However, neither style nor engineering exist in a vacuum. Furthering the discussion on these topics, Vice President for Product Group Large Cars, Dr. Uwe Ernstberger, recalled the discussion on whether or not the Coupe would have a sliding sunroof. “As a Convertible version was planned, we made a strategic decision not to
82
offer a heavy and complex sunroof, and this immediately gave us a 42.0 mm advantage in potential headroom,” he said. “To maximise the feeling of light and space, we decided to use a glass Panorama roof instead,” he continued. “So although we dropped the external roofline by 8.0 mm for a sleeker look, we gained 34.0 mm of extra headroom.” Wind noise at speed is impressively low, and I was not surprised when Uwe told me that the Coupe is even quieter in this respect than the S-Class saloon and the now defunct Maybach uber-limousine. “According to our wind noise index, the new Coupe is about 30-percent quieter than the outgoing CL,” said Uwe. While the S500 Coupe has the same 0.27 drag coefficient as the saloon, careful wind tunnel work around the A-pillars and the pillarless side glass is responsible for its lower wind noise. Hypothetically, you can leave the volume control for
the fabulously musical Burmester audio system turned one notch lower! “There is a tendency for people to rest their hands and sometimes weight on the glass with the door open, so this has to be very strong,” Uwe told me. “We use 6.0 mm double glazing here, and because a reverse direction motor pushes the glass strongly upwards into its roof channel, the resulting higher contact force means the side glass becomes a rigid part of the structure when fully closed. Finally, the lack of a B-pillar gives the side a smoother surface with less air turbulence.” As a car that can move four people in comfort across continents, the S-Class Coupe has to have an adequate luggage carrying ability. In this respect, the 400-litre capacity of its regular shaped boot is certainly fit for purpose. It was not lost on me that the C217 S-Class Coupe rides on slightly taller rubber than its predecessor. My test car wore 245/45ZR19 and 275/40ZR19
TORQUE TALK
Pirelli PZero rubber on its 8.5J and 9.5J x 19-inch alloys, and together with the third generation ABC suspension, delivers a smooth and well judged ride in both Comfort and Sport modes. If anything, the Sport mode is the one that impresses more as it manages to maintain most of the suppleness of the Comfort setting its secondary ride, whilst delivering iron-fisted control of the cars not insubstantial bulk when pressing on. Just to be clear, all rear-wheel-drive Coupe models are fitted with ABC suspension with Magic Body Control, while 4Matic versions have Airmatic suspension with ZF’s electronic Continuous Damper Control (CDC). First impressions were that the S500 Coupe feels lighter and more agile than its predecessor. Thanks to the use of high strength lightweight steels and alloys, the weighing scales show a 40kg saving for the S500 Coupe over its CL500 predecessor. However, thanks to the latest generation Airmatic and 4Matic equipped chassis, this two tonne Coupe felt like it weighed no more than 1,600kg as I trail-braked into bends, using the full thrust of the twinturbo V8 to muscle my way out again. While it cannot be described as having sportscar-like feel, the power steering is nicely weighted, and its turn-in rate is perfectly judged for the chassis. Ergo, it is one of those systems that you don’t have to think about, and that suits me just fine. This big Coupe can traverse very demanding roads at a rate of knots that will surprise the drivers of some very quick cars. And do so in great comfort and style. On that score, Mercedes makes much capital of their new Curve Tilt Function,
83
TORQUE TALK an additional development with Magic Body Control, and an option on the latest generation ABC (Active Body Control) suspension for the reardrive versions only. However, before enthusiasts get too excited, I should state that this feature comes with a caveat. As with the optional Magic Ride Control system on the S-Class saloon, the tilt feature, which leans the car into the curve like a motorcycle, only works in Comfort mode, and is meant to be an aid to comfort rather than performance. It is a strange sensation at first but once you get used to it you realise that it has an even more relaxing effect for passengers than normal ABC. Where ABC reduces roll to the point where you don’t feel you are being thrown across the cabin in a bend taken quickly, the CTF system, which activates between 15 and 45km/h, and deactivates between 180 to 190km/h, further reduces centrifugal forces on occupants. Such is the chassis’ inherent capabilities that the S500 Coupe feels smooth and rapid rather than outrageously fast. But that is just fine since outrageously fast is the job of the S-Class Coupe wearing the AMG badges.
S63 AMG “We benefitted from the complete sea change in the philosophy of the S-Class Coupe compared to the outgoing CL,” explained AMG’s product planning manager, Oliver Weich. “Where the CL was more or less a short wheelbase twodoor S-Class, the physically smaller and lighter C217 S-Class Coupe was designed to be a sportier car from day one.” “It was an aim of both the Mercedes and AMG teams that the S-Class Coupe would not just promise a sporty drive with its sleek design, but actually be able to follow through in its driving dynamics as well.” The amazing thing is how much of the S500’s ride comfort has been retained despite the substantial suspension uprating work. “Our engineers changed every single bush in the front suspension and sub-frame,” said Oliver. “The AMG suspension bushes are between 200 and 700-percent stiffer than the ones on the S500 Coupe depending on location and application, and the front axle has different kinematics for better response and control.” “The end result is a good balance between making the axles stiff enough
84
to being able to handle the extra torque of the 5.5 litre bi-turbo V8, and maintaining a high level of ride compliance,” he said. The suspension settings are also quite different. The first giveaway is the 1.6° negative camber setting for the front wheels, a significant 1.1° more than on the S500 Coupe. This gives the S63 AMG better turn-in response, while not being enough to adversely affect the wear rate on the inside of the tyres. Larger wheel bearings provide better load distribution under the higher cornering loads the AMG Coupe is capable of sustaining, and the steering knuckles are beefed up to handle the greater negative camber and to reinforce the steering system. “In the past we had issues with front-end geometrical differences between the rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions of our cars,” Oliver explained. “This was because the changes to the suspension hardware to accommodate the front driveshafts resulted in a different roll centre between the two models, and compromised geometry for the 4WD version.” “The result was a less transparent ‘feel’ through the helm of the 4WD version, detectable by most drivers, so we made a conscious decision to eliminate this,” he said. “By designing the front suspension to accommodate both drive systems from day one, we have managed to achieve exactly the same steering response and feel with both versions,” said Oliver. “The rear axle uses the same hardware as the S500, but as with the front end, the suspension arm and sub-frame bushes are uprated.” The standard AMG steel brake system features 390mm diameter vented, cross-drilled discs in front in a composite design that ‘floats’ the friction area from the hubs for better heat dissipation. The optional ceramic brake system uses 420mm diameter discs that save 8.0 kg on each front wheel, and 5.0 kg on each rear wheel for a 25 kg total saving in unsprung weight. As on the S63 AMG saloon, the old concept of standard and Performance Package has been scrapped for the S-Class Coupe. Thus, the S63 AMG Coupe also comes with the full fat version of AMG’s M157 direct-injection, twin-turbo V8, with 585hp at 5,500rpm and 900 Nm of torque between 2,250 and 3,750rpm.
Perfect traction enables the S63 AMG 4Matic to launch itself to 100km/h in a very rapid 3.9 sec, compared to 4.3 sec for the rear-wheel-drive only version, which includes all RHD cars. Top speed of both is the usual electronically limited 250km/h with a 300km/h limit as a cost option. With the lighter alloy wheels, tyres and steel brakes, the S63 AMG saves 16kg over the outgoing model. With the ceramic brakes shaving a further 25kg, it is possible to save a very significant 41kg of unsprung weight.
TORQUE TALK The battery is a one of the heaviest removable items on any car, and we had the opportunity to lift a standard 100Ah battery and AMG’s lightweight Lithium Ion equivalent that saves around 20kg. Add all these weight saving items together, and the scales report a total 65kg saving over the previous model, which is practically the weight of one passenger! Ride quality is always about the best possible compromise between spring and damper rates, and this means that even when you are told spring rate has gone up by 100 percent, it does not mean that the car will be twice as stiff.
In the case of the S63 AMG Coupe, the car is so well damped that I was not sure initially if the small measure of extra firmness was down to the uprated suspension or the optional 20-inch forged alloys shod with 255/40ZR20 and 285/35ZR20 Continental Sport Contact 5P rubber on my test car. Certainly in all cases, the engineers have taken some of the potential firmness out of the ride by using the same 8.5J and 9.5J x 19-inch wheels with taller profile 255/55ZR19 and 285/40ZR19 rubber in place of the 255/40ZR19 and 275/40ZR19 sizes used before. And yes, I could not tell that the car I drove was 4WD so the new front geometry obviously works.
With its AMG aero kit and 20-inch forged wheels and an even richer interior with carbon-fibre inserts on the dash, doors and console, the S63 Coupe looks the part. My test car also had the optional matt paintwork that made it look even more aggressive. The S63 AMG Coupe is a quite different animal from the S500. Aggressive and thrusting when prodded, it still retains a high level of refinement when you throttle back. In 4Matic guise especially, it really is a practical sports Coupe for all seasons.

Romanticising THE RESIDENCE
S
o you’ve decided to redecorate, revamp or totally overhaul your entire home and, because you know you need help, you’ve also decided to hire an interior designer or a project manager, which no doubt can be a scary process - but not with FOC Design. Here at FOC our reputation is all about going the extra mile for our clients. Details are of the utmost importance, as any home is such a personal affair, so it’s essential to be able to meet the needs of every client. Creative Director, Hayley Reed, almost like a psychiatrist with her approach to these projects, really nails those unique details, from your personal needs, your likes and dislikes, how the space is used, what colours you love, what colours you hate, etc. A lot of people have a mental image of a designer in their head as a flamboyant, imperious figure who sweeps into your home, scans the room and demands that “everything must go!” Let us assure you this is not
90
the approach we take here at FOC, we strive to achieve what you want and what your tastes are. It’s always important to bear in mind that we are talking about personal taste here; one man’s trash is another’s treasure. Something you hate might be exactly the thing that someone else absolutely adores. But it’s your home, so it is your likes and dislikes that matter. As you’re reading this you might be thinking, “I’m not really sure what colours and styles I love or hate” and that is what our team is here to help you figure out. There are some steps you can do to ease the process of decorating. How about making a wish list of items or aspects you’d like your project to include? Once you have your wish list, review it with your designer who sometimes may have to deliver a reality check, but more often than not can help you turn wish list into reality! Take photos of some of the collectables or features you’d like to maintain, as this will help your designer

get a better idea of your likes, dislikes and the elements that he or she will need to work around. And last - but certainly not least - think about how you use your home. The FOC Design team is keen to ensure the practicality of your home; aesthetics need to be stunning but they do not need to dictate your space and how you use it. One of the most important aspects, which really helps to give a design process some direction, is if there is something that already exists in the property that suggests a style or if there is something that you have seen which you want to use as inspiration. This could be anything from a painting or a chair, to the architectural features of the home. In the case of this month’s
Benahavis property, we were working with some already very traditional Andalusian features, which needed to be integrated into our design. The terracotta tiled floors with inlaid timber, the pitched ceilings dressed in the same deep timber beams and the home’s traditional distribution such as the decorative bay windows in the bedrooms, are all features which we often see in older villas along the Coast. Instead of dismissing these features, our approach was to embrace them and see how we can work with them in order to update the interiors but not lose the charm of the property. This particular project was more about giving the villa a new bright and airy

look without losing or alienating its beautiful existing features. Therefore we saw our task as romanticising the residence in a modern way, rather than in a clean cut design. Adding to a traditional property in a modern way entails maintaining and using its authentic features. The timber-covered pitched ceiling in the dining room, highlighted by cascading droplet pendant lights, encourages guests to look up and take in the entire room. Similarly we added the floor-to-ceiling

hen we go out for lunch or dinner we must confess that we don’t always think of the particular requirements of our resident vegetarian before choosing a restaurant. While almost all venues these days are sufficiently switched on to include a couple of veggie starters and main courses, these are not always as exciting as they might be and we often feel quite guilty looking at our colleague’s plate of nut cutlets while we’re tucking into a large steak. However, there is one fail safe way of pleasing the vegetarian in your life and that is to book a table at a Lebanese restaurant. With a stunning range of fabulous dishes, many of which are entirely meat-free, a classic Lebanese menu will allow the most dedicated herbivore to eat like a king – or queen. The Marbella and Estepona areas have a dazzling array of restaurants serving authentic Ottoman cuisine, so there is plenty of choice. If you are looking for something a little different, we can recommend Arabia. Part of the international Blue Bay Group, this imaginative restaurant showcases the best of Lebanese and Moroccan cooking and its location (front line in Puerto Banús) has the distinct advantage of allowing diners to admire the latest line-up of superyachts. Open for lunch and dinner, it proved the perfect place to engage in our guilty habit of people watching and we were impressed by the shisha, which offered a further touch of Middle Eastern magic and will now doubt seduce punters into lingering for most of the afternoon or evening. We found a table with great views and settled down to enjoy a feast of Middle Eastern/North African food and, with that in mind, made the decision to sample a bit of everything. We were assured that
106
the entire kitchen staff hails from North Africa and the Middle East, which should reassure any diner questioning the bona fides of the food. If you are visiting Arabia for the first time you should consider trying the Arabic Tower as a starter. Despite sounding like a hotel in Dubai, this is actually a large selection of dishes (or mezze) and is the perfect choice if, like us, you like to order several items and share them. Our Arabic Tower, which looked as impressive as it sounded, consisted of Fatoush (Fresh Salad with Pita Bread), Mutabal (Smoked Aubergines with Sesame Cream and Lemon), Hummus, Laban (Cucumber Salad with Yoghurt and Mashed Fresh Mint), Loubieh bel Zaeit (Green Beans with Fresh Tomato Sauce), Falafel, Tabouleh, Kibbeh Kras (Wheat Croquettes with Minced Meat, Pine Nuts and Spices) and Sambousek bil Lahm (a small pie containing Minced Meat). Lebanese cuisine is so ridiculously varied that it seems almost insulting to presume that even such a broad selection as this is truly representative, but as far as attractive starter packs go, this is the one of the best we have seen. The salads, in particular, were wonderfully fresh and crunchy and the combination of flavours was just superb. The selection of main courses was mouthwatering but we had to make a decision and, having virtually run the gamut of Lebanese cuisine from A to Z, we decided that one of us at least should sample some of Arabia’s Moroccan dishes. The Chicken Tagine with Cous Cous and Vegetables was a triumph; short of taking the ferry and finding the best eating place in Tangier, this was Morocco on a plate, the chicken and vegetables benefiting hugely from the old tradition of slow cooking. Did we lead you to believe that Middle Eastern cookery was only suitable for vegetarians? Our mistake – the

most enthusiastic carnivore will be delighted with the Mashawi Mixto, or Mixed Grill. Consisting of Lamb Kebab, Shish Taook (a chicken skewer) and Kafta Meshwi (grilled mince skewer) this demonstrated the diversity of the Great Ottoman Menu. As one would anticipate in a venue such as this, all the meat is halal. We were hoping for some great desserts and are happy to report that these more than lived up to our expectations. The Baklava, in particular, was a triumph, the beautifully flaky filo pastry containing nuts and sprinkled with rosewater, which surely must be one of the Middle East’s most evocative ingredients. We also tried the Qatayef (delicate half moons filled with walnuts, rose water and syrup) and the Knafeh (cheese-filled pastries), which were every bit as delicious.
Regular visitors to Puerto Banús will be very happy to note that they can now enjoy the best of the Middle East without leaving the attractions of the port. This area of Marbella has long had a reputation for featuring some of the best eating places in town and now, with the advent of yet another great Blue Bay venue, that golden reputation can only be enhanced. Julio César Garcia Valdés is one of the sommeliers at wine bodega and fine dining restaurant, D-wine. Every month he brings SOCIETY Marbella’s readers insider knowledge and wine recommendations. This month he places his sommelier spotlight on the Mencia grape from the Bierzo region of Spain.

ierzo is a small, rural region in the north-western corner of Castilla y León, part of the Saint James trail, close to the eastern border of Galicia. The region was known as a mining centre in Roman times, mainly for the extraction of gold and, more recently, coal and iron. Bierzo wines were almost unknown for a long time but the arrival of famous producers such as Alvaro Palacios in the 1990s and the capacity of renowned local producer Raul Perez, has placed Mencia wines on the world wine map.
108
The Spanish grape Mencía is the star of the Bierzo region. This grape produces complex wines that are fruity but still refined and expressive, earthy yet silky, with hints of minerality and tar providing contrast. The Bierzo region boasts a real confluence of two marked styles of the Mencía grape: the Atlantic style with more acidity and freshness, exotic wildflower, licorice and smooth fruit flavours, represented by Raúl Perez and the Continental style with lots of jammy fruit, toasty oak flavours, with mineral and earthy aromas developed by Alvaro Palacios.
Both styles clearly reflect the vineyard’s slate soils and the fruity character of Bierzo’s superb and unusual Mencia wines.

hose of you who enjoy an evening of grown-up sophistication may well decide to visit Marbella’s casino to rub shoulders with the city’s high-fliers and high-rollers but, before you hit the tables and the roulette wheel, may we recommend the perfect place to enjoy a quiet meal? Le Petit Bistro is conveniently located next to the imposing H10 Hotel Andalucía Plaza and, therefore, within a dozen steps of the casino. Open from Tuesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner, this great little venue is well placed to take advantage of locals and visitors staying at the hotel. A large illuminated tree marks the spot, so even first-time visitors should easily find their way to Le Petit Bistro, which is run by Tina, a wonderful personality who sees it as her job to make sure that every customer feels thoroughly at home as soon as they sit foot inside the door. Although quite compact, the bistro features plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and the ambience is overwhelmingly romantic, with candles providing a welcome touch of glamour and intimacy.
110
The menu was, as we had hoped, virtually a paean to the best of French cuisine, with traditional favourites like Beef Bourguignon rubbing shoulders with dishes that have clearly taken inspiration from recent foodie revolutions. With Tina’s assistance we managed to find a table outside and settled down to enjoy some examples of what most food critics still regard as the world’s best culinary tradition. Lovers of cocktails will be in heaven, but we decided to forego that pleasure for a wonderful bottle of Touraine Sauvignon (of course we knew that we weren’t actually in France, but there seemed no harm in pretending for a while) and a gorgeous Cote du Rhone Reserve Gran Veneur. So many dishes appealed to us that it took ages to place our order, but eventually we made up our minds – thankfully Tina is a very patient woman! The distinctly Provençal Tian of Crab with crisp Fennel Salad, Blood Orange segments and Citrus Dressing was glorious; although we eat a tremendous amount of fish and seafood in Spain we

is so typical of the best French cooking these days, a well-loved favourite given a new lease of life via some cunning twists. Our other main course was a real old favourite – Coq au Vin. This dish consisted of corn-fed Chicken Supreme in Red Wine with Smoked Bacon and was served with a wonderful Medley of Fresh Vegetables, Fine Herbs and Scallion Champ. This is a dish that is a home-cooked favourite during the winter but if you think that you know what a true French Coq au Vin tastes like then take our advice and try the version served at Le Petit Bistro for that extra hit of authenticity. The dessert menu keeps up the momentum beautifully with not a corporate “Carta de Helados” in sight and the French theme continues right until the end. It brought out the wild sides of our sweet teeth, that is for sure. The Chocolate Fondant with White Chocolate Ganache, Toasted Almonds and Coconut Ice Cream was so good that I actually dreamed about it several nights after our visit. Chocolate fondants are notoriously tricky creations, but this was timed to perfection. The Champagne Fruit Jelly with Crème Anglaise, Basil Chantilly Cream and Raspberry Sorbet added the final touch of Gallic sophistication to a wonderful evening.
both agreed that crab is a generally underused ingredient and this was a beautifully tasty bistro classic. Our other choice was a contemporary favourite; Slow Cooked Pigs Cheek served with pan seared Scallops, braised Leek Risotto, Crispy Bacon and Pork Jus. This was what surf and turf would taste like if it was prepared in heaven. If choosing our starters was a problem, then deciding which main courses to
try was even worse. We both agreed that the Tarte Fine was enough to bring out the latent vegetarian in the most dedicated carnivore, but finally opted for a couple of culinary classics. The slow roast Pork Belly was served with the crispest Crackling either of us had ever tasted (of course we both had to test it!), Red Cabbage, Blonde Raisins, French Green Beans, Apple Dressing, which was absolutely gorgeous and a Ginger Jus. This is the type of dish which
It’s good to know that it’s so easy to experience the best of French cooking in Marbella and that, whatever your fortunes at the Black Jack table, you at least won’t have to rely on Lady Luck to eat like Louis XIV. wine of every variety: Spanish, French, Californian and wines from lesserknown producers in places such as New Zealand, Africa and Australia”. What made you become a sommelier? It was a natural progression – I have always loved wine and, as I was working in restaurants and hospitality, I started taking courses in wine appreciation and progressed from there. I trained with one of the best people in the business here in Andalucía and have worked in fivestar hotels, as well as on the QE2.
Miguel, who joined La Sala eight months ago, has been honing his skills as a sommelier for several years, including a stint on the fabulous transatlantic liner, the QE2, which contained the most impressive floating wine cellar in the world until being taken out of service in 2008.
How important is the wine cellar in the life of a restaurant? It is an essential component; a restaurant needs a wide selection of wines to recommend with different dishes to bring out the best of the flavours in the food.
When asked what makes a good sommelier, Miguel replies: “A passion for wine, a well-trained nose and a thirst for knowledge about

Red wines should be served at 1618ºC, and as temperatures soar in summer, room temperatures rise, so it is recommendable to chill the reds to the correct temperature - but not too cold. Where are the La Sala house wines from? We have good house wines, priced from 15,50€/bottle. The red is a Rioja and the white is from the Rueda region and they are both very drinkable! With wines at La Sala ranging from 15,50€ to almost 400€ a bottle for a vintage Vega Sicilia, when do you feel it is important to invest in a fine wine? It is always good to drink fine wine when the budget allows it! Those who appreciate wine always want to invest in the best they can afford. The menu at La Sala is very extensive, and filled with variety. Which wines would you suggest for the following three tempting dishes: Seared Fresh Tuna Steak served with Stir-Fried Mixed Vegetables, Sautéed New Potatoes and a Fresh Caper and Parsley Dressing? With fish, I highly recommend an Albariño white – which has a fruity, citrusy freshness to it. What about Our Famous Sticky Pork Belly with Crispy Crackling, Creamed Potatoes and Apple Compote?
This would go down very well with a bottle of The Chocolate Block, a distinctive South African red. And how about a 5oz char-grilled Fillet Mignon and Half Lobster topped with garlic butter and rock salt served with Asparagus, Fries and Béarnaise Sauce? I think a Protos Crianza would be perfect for this, as it won’t overpower the delicate taste of the lobster. And what if you are eating some nice fish on the beach at La Sala by the Sea, for example? Definitely a good, well-chilled Chablis – there is nothing better! On to the dessert, do you serve any pudding wines at La Sala? We have a superb Mouton Cadet, a Sauternes that is served chilled – it is like liquid gold! Finally Miguel, when you are cooking at home, which wines do you like to serve with dinner? I love to cook Asian inspired dishes such as Szechuan Prawns and would probably choose a Protos. I am always sampling wines from different countries and new blends from different bodegas – and it is wonderful when I come across a new favourite! Lasalabanus.com Tel: +34 952 813 882

hilst you might not expect an Irish Bar to boast one of the finest healthy menus on the coast, Slainte isn’t your average Irish Bar.
Having opened the doors in December 2013, Slainte has attracted not only locals looking for home-style favourites (including the best Sunday Roast around) but also those on a healthier diet thanks to their wholesome boxer specials. This month they launched their new menu to incorporate a much wider choice of healthy options to appease their growing clientele. “It started off with us just offering daily boxer specials as so many people from MGM gym downstairs came up looking for a nutritious meal after training. However then the word started to get out that we were offering these completely healthy choices and people started to come just for them,” explained owner, Charley Caradas. As the specials continued to increase in popularity, Charley decided it was time for a change and introduced the new Healthy V. Hearty menu boasting an extensive offering of salads, healthy snacks and the famed boxer special. Whilst all the favourites are still standing strong, including Chicken Tenders, Rack of Ribs and Fish and Chips the healthy side presents a vast range of choices all complete with the calories count in each. here are days in Marbella when the sun shines so brightly that the white buildings of Andalucía sear the eye and one can see the heat rising from the tarmac. At times like these there are few places more appealing than Marbella’s Paseo Maritimo and, on this magnificent seafront path, there are few eating places as attractive as The Boardwalk.
and dinner or, if you plan to meet up with friends for an hour or so, a simple cup of coffee or a traditional British afternoon tea.
Open from nine in the morning until late, this lively new establishment has already garnered a faithful following who enjoy the warm, friendly ambience and the magnificent views of the Mediterranean. Dressed in an eye-catching combination of pink and pearly white, The Boardwalk is the perfect place for breakfast, lunch
What immediately strikes the first-time visitor is that The Boardwalk attracts customers from all walks of life; middleaged tourists sat happily next to tables of local hipsters and all seemed to be enjoying the food, the conversation and the wonderful breeze that was blowing in from the sea – what a relief!
When we recently had one of those ‘hot as Hades’ Costa del Sol days we decided to make the short drive to central Marbella to catch a sea breeze and enjoy a leisurely lunch.
Making sure that we bagged a table with a great sea view and plenty of shade, we ordered some drinks which were spectacular. Cocktails lovers will be very happy to learn that all of the classics are represented (we sampled a Cosmopolitan, a Mojito, a Porn Star Martini, a Margarita and a Cherry Blossom, which was a mixture of Amaretto, fresh lemon, a touch of strawberry syrup, topped with cranberry juice), while the selection of fruit juices, milkshakes and iced coffees is stupendous. We also ordered a Razzmatazz, a non-alcoholic cocktail consisting of watermelon, raspberry, passion fruit and fresh orange, which tasted as good as it looked.
COSTA CUISINE
We chose to share our starters to leave plenty of room for the main course and opted for the Gambas Pil-Pil with Chilli and Garlic and the Spicy Chicken Parmigiana with Gratinated Mozzarella and Garlic Bread. Both of these choices were beautifully presented and wonderfully tasty, the Gambas Pil-Pil spitting dramatically on arrival at the table, just as we had hoped (we do love a bit of drama) and the Chicken Parmigiana was out of this world. The Boardwalk’s extensive menu provides plenty of choice for everyone, from the vegetarian to the dedicated carnivore and everything in between. The team is particularly keen to emphasise its selection of fresh fish, which changes daily depending what has been caught by the local fishermen. Our selection was sufficiently wide to test the abilities of any kitchen, with orders for fish, meat and pasta dishes all hitting the chef at the same time. The Pizza Carbonara turned out to be a real crowd pleaser, the crispy base topped with a delicious combination of Crispy Bacon, Mushrooms, Buffalo Mozzarella, fresh Parmesan and Black Pepper, while the Spinach, Ricotta and Pine Nut Ravioli with Sage Butter further enhanced The Boardwalk’s reputation for delivering authentic Italian dishes.
When you next visit this great new restaurant you absolutely must try the fabulous Salmon En Croute, which consists of Fresh Chopped Salmon, Cream Cheese and Chives baked in Filo Pastry with Sautéed New Potatoes and Seasonal Vegetables. This was one of our favourites and was enthusiastically sampled by the whole party. It might be one of the more expensive items on the menu, but if you’re looking for a lavish treat then the Chateaubriand will hit the spot. Served with Fat Chips, Herb Stuffed Mushrooms, a heavenly Béarnaise sauce and Grilled Cherry Tomatoes, this was designed to silence the most dedicated meat eater and earned a five-star review from our resident carnivore. The Roast Leg of Lamb, served with Garlic and Herb Baby Roast Potatoes and Home-made Mint Sauce, was also a winner, perfectly cooked and packed with flavour.
It was going to be a challenge to pack anything in after those fabulous main courses, but somehow we managed to sample some of The Boardwalk’s Carrot Cake, which was perfection on a plate, while we enjoyed our coffee. What can we say about this brilliant new venue? Well, if you love good, hearty food you’re in for a real treat. As we made the short walk back to our cars one of the party was clearly channelling The Drifters: “...The Boardwalk by the sea... that’s where I’ll be.”

Paella

very once in a while a new venture opens up on the Coast that makes all of us at SOCIETY Marbella say, ‘WOW!’ One such place is Paella’s y Mas. Located just off the bustling Avenida Ricardo Soriano, on Calle Jacinto Benavente, this new venue is best described as an Andalusian Brasserie. Owners Javier and Todd enlisted the help of the inimitable Pedro Peña to create the interior design and the finished product is simply divine. Exposed white brickwork sits alongside black geometric patterned surfaces, large banquet seating and countless glass jars filled with staple ingredients used to concoct many of the dishes you will find on the menu. The restaurant displays a meticulous attention to detail, which is both impressive and admirable.
from the kitchen. “Most restaurants have tables that measure 60cm across, here at Paella’s y Mas our tables are 80cm wide”. As we said, everything in the restaurant has been designed with a huge amount of thought to make the guests’ experience as comfortable as possible.
The layout of the restaurant is, of course, also well thought out. A large sunny terrace provides an al fresco dining experience to those who want it, whilst the inside offers a spacious area to enjoy your meal. It very much feels intimate without being on top of the table next to you. There is also an area, which can work as a private dining room for a special occasion or social club gathering. The tables, Todd tells us, have been specifically designed to cater for the large paella dishes that emerge
Head Chef Javier Ponte is the man who makes the culinary magic happen. Javier comes from a family who has always worked in the kitchen, creating delectable flavours with basic, locally sourced ingredients. A black and white photograph of Javier’s grandmother takes pride of place in the restaurant, seemingly welcoming all those who cross the threshold of Paella’s y Más. Added to the fact that he comes from a family of cooks, Javier has also spent more than 15 years studying everything one
should know about cuisine. This wealth of expertise has helped to create a menu, which is innovative yet traditional. Javier is adamant in thinking that Paella’s y Mas should be all about rediscovering traditional Spanish dishes, so on the menu you will find items such as croquettes and meatballs but all of the dishes are given a special tasty twist. For examples, the croquettes are handmade in the kitchen and filled with the finest jamón de bellota. The meatballs are made with a similar attention to detail. “We buy the pork raw, prepare it in our own special way then create the sweet tomato sauce made with sweet shallots and Malaga wine,” Javier says to us, “We offer traditional dishes that are made in a very different way”.
COSTA CUISINE
Alongside the long list of different paellas and fideua dishes (thin noodles typical of Valencia) available, you can also find a spectacular array of grilled meat plates. All of the meat is bought in from Zamora, Castile and boasts exquisite flavour. Daily specials also make a meal at Paella’s y Mas a unique experience with every visit. Pan fried liver with caramelised Málaga wine and onions, kebabs of acorn fed pork with cumin and lemon and tripe with chorizo and jamón de bellota are all very popular specials with the international clientele that frequent the restaurant.
think that offering a little bit of everything will heighten the appeal of their venue,” mentions Javier, “when in fact the authenticity of the place is sacrificed, which people don’t like”.
The entire menu, as intended, most definitely gives a nod to traditional Spanish ingredients and flavour combinations, which is refreshing in an age that has witnessed a huge rise in fusion cuisine. “Perhaps restaurateurs
A take away service is also available at a 10 per cent discount from the menu prices with the option of taking the paella pan straight to your home and brought back the following day so as not to lose any flavour from the dish.
With the heat of August out of the way and the cooler autumn months approaching, Javier and Todd are looking to add some new dishes to the menu and are even thinking ahead to some winter plates that will work well. Expect to find a lot of stews with lentils and Iberian chorizo on the menu, as well as hot fideua with chickpeas and beans.
There is little more to say about this fantastic establishment; go and see for yourself. Trust us, Paella’s y Más will soon become your all-time favourite haunt. BREAD, O
ne of the delights of the Spanish countryside in the morning when wandering near a village is the smell of freshly baked bread. Go into the baker, and you will be confronted with every shape and size of bread imaginable. And each form has its own use. What is suitable for breakfast may not be suitable for dinner, and in some areas, as in Catalonia, special breads in the form of hearts or crowns may be offered as a gift at a wedding or other festivity. This region also rejoices in a simple and delicious form of tomato bread, when crusty bread is rubbed with some fresh garlic and a juicy tomato before being sprinkled with oil and salt.
Even more basically, who can resist crisp crusty bread with oil and salt before a meal, thereby totally destroying their appetite for the delights to come!? And when these delights arrive, the diner may observe that bread may not be just bread. It may be the basis of a delectable culinary concoction. Quite often this may be the result of its having been married to oil, or garlic, or both. Throughout Spain the cuisine varies, but all have one thing in common; an extensive use of these three basic ingredients.
120
GARLIC OLIVES
Julio Camba (1882-1962), a Spanish writer and journalist, once made the sage comment “Spanish
cooking is thick with garlic and religion” (which is perhaps
another reason why a priest is writing this article!) Who has not encountered all i oli (sometimes barbarously shortened to alioli, which may well indicate that it is not simply pure pounded garlic mixed with oil, but merely a garlic flavoured mayonnaise!)? Here in Andalusia, where the processions of Semana Santa testify to the deep religious sensibilities still dormant in what is becoming an increasingly secular society, this delicious sauce is a necessary adjunct to many
a fish dish, particularly the magnificent Fritura Malagueña; whilst in the north of the country the All Cremat, a casserole of crisply fried garlic, potatoes and rape just cries out for such an accompaniment. But garlic does not stop there! Bread, oil and garlic are the basic and main ingredients of Gaspacho (where the original Roman ingredients make a harmonious marriage with the Aztec tomato!), the Salmorejo of Córdoba , and particularly the white garlic soup Ajo blanco. Some of these dishes have been adulterated over the years, but having said that in Málaga
COSTA CUISINE
the peasant ajo blanco was long ago adopted and improved by the urban middle classes with the addition of pitted Málaga raisins or grapes as a garnish to the pounded raw garlic. Yet if we look hard enough, we are still able to enjoy dishes that have not changed substantially over the years. Such a dish is Migas de pastor. As the name pastor suggests, migas originated in the poverty stricken Spanish countryside. There nothing
was wasted. Indeed, to throw away bread was considered a sacrilegious act. Bread is used
in the Mass as the Body of Christ. Various methods may be used today in the making of Migas, particularly when vast quantities are required for festivals, but in the traditional manner, old, dry, bread is cut into thin slices and left to soak in salted water. It is then squeezed dry, and may be left wrapped in a cloth overnight. In a pan, peeled heads of garlic are fried in deep oil, and when browned the squeezed soaked bread is added. All is stirred until it breaks and separates into fine golden crumbs. A little milk may then be sprinkled over the
mixture. On high days and Holy Days, a little chopped ham may be added. As an extension or variation to this delicious concoction, in La Mancha a dish called Gaspacho Manchego may be produced. This has nothing whatsoever to do with Andalusian gaspacho. It is a form of empanada, which itself is basically a form of bread rather than a form of pastry. The main difference here is that whilst a normal empanada requires an oven, and an Andalusian gaspacho is a soup, the Gaspacho Manchego is a sort of tart; almost a sort of pizza. No oven is needed, and
the preparation should be made on an open wood fire out of doors. A large flat crust is baked over such a fire, and then covered in a thick stew cooked in a gazpachera, consisting of crumbled bread, garlic, onions, peppers, and whatever bits of meat come to hand. It goes without saying that in all cases we are talking about traditionally baked bread, rather than the wrapped soft pap which disgraces so many supermarket shelves today. It equally goes without saying that whatever is being cooked will be cooked in olive oil. Spain is the world’s largest producer. This product has already featured in these pages, but the fruit itself also features prominently in Spanish cuisine. This is particularly true when it comes to whetting the appetite with a small copita of fino sherry or a dry Montilla. These olives are verdeo; preserved or semi-preserved olives designed for eating rather than oil manufacture. Many such olives are carefully picked by hand rather than being allowed to drop from the tree, or collected by machine; both methods may damage the fruit. The most popular variety is the Manzanilla, which is pale green and oval, as opposed to the
larger and darker green Sevillana. This large and fleshy variety is also known as Gordal. An olive vaguely resembling the shape of a small gherkin, with a white tip and a hint of bitterness is a Cornezuelo. One olive which goes well with beer is the Cuquillo, which is round and black, and pickled with chopped onion and chilli. In Aragon one might meet the spiced Negrilla which is particularly suited to consumption with red wine. And what could be better as a little snackerel than a good glass of such wine, some olives and a couple of slices of tomato bread?

UNDERSTANDING
THE SCHEME
AND ITS BENEFITS
I
f you are considering transferring your UK pension to a QROPS, we are confident our tips and suggestions will go a long way to providing answers to some of your questions and nagging concerns. As much as we strongly advise our clients to complete their own due diligence process, information on the web can be misleading and we have witnessed many instances of severe misrepresentation of QROPS and their benefits. QROPS can be extremely advantageous, but as with all financial planning it has to be executed and managed correctly. Finding the correct scheme provider, knowing which jurisdiction is right for you, and more importantly, ensuring future investment growth are vital to ensure a successful transaction, financial security and achieving your goals. Our team of specialist advisers can help with this in a language you understand. We offer a free non-obligation face-toface consultation. Alternatively we can discuss your situation and carry out a needs analysis by phone or Skype.
What is a qrops: Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes A transfer of a UK pension fund to a pension scheme provider in an overseas location such as Malta, New Zealand, Isle of Man or Gibraltar is done via a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme or QROPS.
Hmrc recognition and the five-year rule Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) allow the transfer of a UK pension fund to a QROPS. For someone with a UK pension fund incl. a SIPP, a QROPS can be taken out as soon as they have become a non-UK tax resident providing they fully intend to remain so for the foreseeable future. However, this does not prevent a return to the UK at any time in the future.
+34 952 768 376 | qrops@gwm-ltd.com | www.gwm-ltd.com 122
For those QROPS members who have been resident in the UK at any time in the last five full complete and consecutive UK tax years, the scheme must behave as though it were still a UK scheme. Please note that this fiveyear rule does not apply to the time the QROPS was first taken out, it relates to non-residency. After five full complete and consecutive UK complete tax years, this requirement falls away although all ‘events’ (taking of any benefits or the transfer to another arrangement) have to be reported by the Trustees to HMRC for 10 years from the date of transfer.
Summary of the advantages 1. Freedom to Control Investments - the possibilities become more or less unlimited and we can utilize investment products from some of the world’s top financial institutions and Discretionary Fund Managers (DFM) to ensure consistent yield, complete flexibility and security. The opportunity to invest into a more diversified range of asset classes can be vital in maximizing your earning and savings potential. 2. Flexibility to access funds – access funds at any time between the ages of 50 and 75 with the potential to access the funds outside these ages. 3. Potential for an immediate cash lump sum payment – potential to take a Pension Commencement Lump Sum (PCLS) of up to 30% from age 50, subject to the 5 year non-UK tax residency rules. 4. Access to income and capital without deduction of tax at source* taxation will apply in accordance with the legislation governing the QROPS scheme member’s country of residence. (This is explained in more details in the next section. 5. Transfer of the fund to future generations upon death – remaining funds can be held in trust for the purpose of transferring to future beneficiaries. 6. Potentially free from UK Death Tax Whatever monies are in the pension fund at time of death are paid to the person’s nominated beneficiaries without any deductions being made at source. In the UK this can be as much as 55%.
7. Tax planning – with the current tax treatment of QROPS in certain jurisdictions, we have the option to incorporate a ‘temporary annuity’ (capped drawdown) which can ensure favourable tax treatment. 8. No limit on fund size – Once the QROPS scheme is live and we have a suitable investment platform in place to achieve growth, we then have the opportunity to contribute further to your overall pension/QROPS scheme on a regular or on an adhoc basis. Unlike the UK, whereby you are limited to a Standard Lifetime Allowance no greater than £1.5m, reducing again in Tax Year 2014/15 to £1.25m. All of the above advantages are possible after your UK pension fund has been transferred to a QROPS and you have been a non-UK tax resident for five full complete and consecutive UK tax years.
Returning to the UK The future can be unpredictable and whilst you have no plans to return to the UK at the moment, situations can quickly change. A common misconception with a QROPS is that should a member who has previously transferred out, return to the UK (either within or after the 5 consecutive tax years) will be penalized and incur additional penalties or higher levels of tax. Neither is true. To the contrary, there are a few small benefits. Should you return to the UK due to a change in circumstance and become a UK tax resident again, the pension will be subject to UK taxation in line with current/existing levels. The UK transfer is ring-fenced when transferred out and all benefits within QROPS are deemed to originate firstly from the original UK transfer, until exhausted. One actual bonus in this situation is, upon death in the UK only the residual fund from the original UK transfer and not the growth within the QROPS, will be subject to the UK lump sum death charge (55%) In addition, as the QROPS is an overseas scheme, only 90% of the income remitted to the UK is subject to UK tax.

AUTUMN 2014
ings
Two years later, we had been well acquainted with each other’s family and friends and we had been on a few holidays together and we were definitely ready to take the next step in our relationship. It was just a case of him popping the question. Last September we
went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me
because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do.
It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had Michknown ael and each other. He then sudMelanie two day denly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I marr celeb ied in ration family, a elega turned around to surro see what he was friend nt unded s by their pointing at,and andson, as I looked Dexte down, a light shone on to the rocksr.

We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.
I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.
ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…
The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!
I wanted a wedding with a difference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holiday at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

Surprises for our guests, and our selves, were ‘wow’ factors starting with flamenco dancing, speeches and performances from our loved ones to large glow sticks on our entrance, a live bongo player over a UK DJ spinning the best beats and then a firework finale.

All you need to do is visit our website www.redlinecompany.com or Facebook page and watch the videos as they are released, then tell us the answer to this question: “What is the Redline that runs through each video?”
Good luck!
Always looking for new ways to make marketing fun and effective, we’ve produced five short videos due to be released online at regular intervals throughout the next month and we’re inviting all local businesses to enter.
HERE ARE JUST SOME OF THE PRIZES YOU COULD WIN: •1 page advertisement (design) •Set up a blog and write the first post •Redline web hosting and web health insurance for 12 months •Creation of a new corporate identity / logo •15-hour marketing package for 1 month *Winners will be chosen at random from the correct entries received before the end of September 2014. KEEP THE MOOD HIGH Back by popular demand, leading British band Rudimental played an outstanding DJ set at Aqwa Mist last month during the busiest season in Puerto Banús. Superclub Aqwa Mist is staying ahead of the pack with headlining acts such as Rudimental and DJ Snake, hot on the tail of the one-off showstopper by rapper Chris Brown earlier last month. Some of the members of leading British band Rudimental played a DJ set at Aqwa Mist to a crowd of dance lovers. The boys got in the party mood for their set, arriving around 2am at their VIP table, where they enjoyed Belvedere vodka, Dom Perignon and tequila shots. Around 4am they hit the stage, and soon had the crowd whipped into a frenzy. On stage for almost two hours, they played all the best Rudimental tracks and interacted with the crowd, dancing and partying on stage. Following their set, the boys continued to enjoy Aqwa Mist, staying until the lights were turned on and everyone left the club. Rudimental, who played Glastonbury to great acclaim this summer, are one of the bands to watch currently in the UK. Winners of a Brit Award 2014 for British Single with ‘Waiting All Night’, Mobo Award and multiplatinum record sales in UK and Australia, and named festival band of the summer of 2013, Rudimental rose to prominence with their single, ‘Feel The Love’, with singer John Newman, earning them a Brit last year. aquamistbanus.com
A BLOOMING LOVELY FLORIST It is always great to see a new business venture starting up on the Coast and here at SOCIETY Marbella we like to bring you all the latest from the opening events. AM Gallery is one such new introduction to the Coast although gallery owner Alla Margun has a wealth of experience in her industry. Alla has been working as a florist and events co-ordinator for many years here in Marbella and her stunning array of bouquets is testament to her knowledge and expertise. Alla hosted an opening party for her new shop, which is located at Club Casa Rusia near D-wine, last month. The event was a huge success and showcased Alla’s creative vision and imagination. With so many weddings being organised here on the Coast, we expect to see a lot more of Alla’s exquisite floral designs at a large number of bridal celebrations. AM Gallery. THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF THE UNKNOWN
challenge to walk. She was also showing extreme tiredness. When Jorgelina took her daughter to hospital, medical professionals searched for a brain tumour but couldn’t find one.
Any mother hates to see their child in pain or discomfort and most mothers would strive to find a solution or cure as soon as possible but for Jorgelina Borda this just isn’t possible. Jorgelina is mother to five-year-old Chloe who suffers from a rare illness, which debilitates her ability to eat, talk, walk and hold things. Despite numerous tests that have been carried out in Spain, Argentina and the US, doctors cannot diagnose Chloe’s condition.
Chloe’s condition continued to deteriorate – she started falling over and choking on food and drink. Jorgelina then embarked on a tour of neurologists in Madrid, Philadelphia and Argentina to treat the illness. Any treatment given to Chloe seemed to worsen her state so Jorgelina followed mother’s instinct and stopped all the remedies suggested by doctors. Eventually, whilst in America, Jorgelina discovered the co-enzyme Q10, used to treat Ataxia and found it helped Chloe’s condition. “I used this information with the Q10 and came up with a totally organic diet, rich in proteins and a dozen supplements expressly for reconstructing the brain, the neurological function and the acceleration of neuro -transmissions.”
The trouble began on Chloe’s third birthday. She started to dribble and her speech became increasingly difficult to understand. Chloe’s left leg started to fold under her making it a
Chloe is still under the care of the American and Spanish specialists and her condition has now stabilised. “We don’t know how it works but she is now talking a bit and has more energy
although we still have to use the wheelchair for getting about.” Jorgelina has since founded the organisation Bubbles and Dreams.org, an association which fights for the rights of children suffering from rare and unrecognised illnesses. Jorgelina’s perseverance is both admirable and courageous and her work with Bubbles and Dreams is going a long way to provide support for children and families in a similar situation to Chloe. We urge readers to visit their website at bubblesanddreams.org to find out more about their valuable work. bubblesanddreams.org Micro Donations available through: teaming.net “Help for Chloe” Help for Chloe
ONE TO WATCH Watch fans will be pleased to hear that an official Rolex distributor has opened up in Puerto Banús. Ideal Jewellers held an exclusive cocktail event last month to celebrate the store’s opening. Shyam Aswani, founder of the company, attended the opening event alongside his son Anup Aswani – director of Ideal Jewellers. Ideal will stock the full range of Rolex models, including the ‘Sky Dweller’, ‘Sea Dweller’ and ‘Deepsea’ released only this year. Speaking to guests at the event, Shyam Aswani said, “With over forty years experience in the luxury jewellery market, we feel proud to bring the Rolex brand to the people of Marbella”. You can find this lavish new store on Calle Muelle Ribera in Puerto Banús. Idealjoyeros.com
