HAPPY EASTER ONE AND ALL! We might be heading closer to summer but here in the SOCIETY MARBELLA office we are all: A Recovering from our St. Patrick’s Day celebrations B Discussing the 2014 Academy Awards and C Getting psyched for this month’s beach club and seafront venue openings As this year’s Oscar nominated films start to filter through from Hollywood we present you with the “Must See Oscar Movies”. large just doesn’t cut the mustard and you need something to be small; that’s not to say that you want to sacrifice quality, though. Ian Kuah recently experienced the unique motoring experience offered by the BMW i3, a car with all the bells and whistles that you would expect of such a well-regarded marque, but wrapped up in a much more compact package than you would normally anticipate from a Beemer. Not only is the i3 much smaller than a standard BMW, but it its main selling point is that it’s electric. Having already made its movie debut in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol a couple of years ago, the i3 already has a glamour that most other electric cars lack and certainly seems to have converted our Ian, who until now has been something of an eco-car refusenik.

Leonardo DiCaprio fans all over the world were glued to their TVs on Oscar night, wondering whether their hero would finally walk away with one of those funny looking golden statues but, yet again, he left empty-handed. As brilliant an actor as Richard Burton was, he is probably most famous as the guy who was nominated for seven Academy Awards but died without winning a single one. At present young Leo’s tally is: nominations – five, wins – zilch. Now staring his 40th birthday in the face, this Oscar drought is beginning to worry the actor, as his face plainly showed when Matthew McConaughey was named winner of the Best Actor award for his turn in Dallas Buyers Club. Film industry experts generally agreed that Martin Scorsese’s version of The Wolf of Wall Street was too morally ambiguous to impress the Hollywood elite who dish out Academy Award votes. So, the wait goes on and Leo can add The Wolf of Wall Street (both as Best Actor and Best Picture, since he was also the film’s producer) to What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator and Blood Diamond for Best Close-But-No-Cigar Moments.

From the tarmac to the air, Padre Peter has been doing some real blue-sky thinking and has discovered that Andalucía has a long history of air travel. It seems that Andalusians have been taking to the skies for a few centuries; in fact, man’s first flight took place not in North Carolina in 1903 but in Córdoba in 875. There is nobody quite like Padre Peter for uncovering unexpected facts, so if you enjoy pub quizzes make a point of looking for his entertaining and informative features.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT ‘Poor Leo’ trends on Twitter as the actor yet again fails to scoop the coveted Oscar award, Society Marbella asks why.

the legendary

Lion

I

of film By Amber O’Shaughnessy

n the wake of his mighty performance as Jordan Belfort in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, there were whispers around Hollywood that this could perhaps be the year that Leonardo DiCaprio would scoop the coveted Oscar. But it was not to be, as the 39 year-old once again watched the prize, which had tantalisingly dangled right in front of his eyes, being snatched away. Leo fans all around the world, watching the ceremony in the vain hope that this was the year for their hero, speculated that when the winner of the Best Actor award was announced to be Mathew McConaughey for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, the camera caught Leo struggling to hold back tears - and why wouldn’t he? The 2014 Academy Awards unbelievably marked the 20th anniversary since Leonardo’s first Oscar nomination back in 1994; he was nominated for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape in the Best Supporting Actor category but lost to Tommy Lee Jones, who won for his work in The Fugitive. As we all know, Leo has dominated Hollywood and its industry

ever since, but is yet to land an Oscar. This year he attended the celebrated Oscars ceremony after starring in two phenomenally successful big screen productions – The Great Gatsby and The Wolf of Wall Street, winning a Best Actor nomination for the latter. Leonardo’s role as Jordan Belfort, the real life Wall Street con merchant turned motivational speaker, has been described by many as the high-water mark in the actor’s career to date. In this black comedy, which deals with the hedonistic themes of drug use, sex, corruption and success, Belfort embarks on a downward spiral towards decadence and debauchery as a result of the ruthless, fast-paced environment that he works within. By the end of the film his character is a grotesque shell of its former self. Despite his Oscar nominated performance as Jordan Belfort, some film critics have discussed

the possibility that Leo played the protagonist perhaps all too convincingly. Could a failure to show the character receiving a worthy punishment have left viewers unsatisfied with the moral compass of the film and turned voters off in the process? Robbie Collin, journalist at The Telegraph, described his experience of sitting at the preview, screened for BAFTA-voters of The Wolf… and watched uncomfortable looking guests shuffle out towards the exit as scenes of indulgence, dwarf throwing contests and cocaine consumption played out. Collin states that he suddenly realised two things: “DiCaprio was giving one of my favourite performances of the year, and also that he could never win.” However DiCaprio has been this close to winning an Oscar numerous times. In 2004 he was nominated Best Actor for his role in The Aviator and the same category in 2007 for Blood Diamond. As he struggled with his most recent knock-back, it was certainly difficult not to feel sorry for the actor. As hashtag ‘Poor Leo’ trended on twitter, the question on everybody’s lips was when will it be DiCaprio’s turn? All we know is that when Leo walks up to that podium to lay his hands on the golden award, film fans throughout the world will be cheering louder than ever.

Leo

Top 5

Performances

The Wolf of Wall Street

Described by many as the pinnacle of his acting career to date, Leo stars as real life stock swindler Jordan Belfort in this black comedy that features drugs, sex and corruption. Hitting back at critics who have denounced the film for revelling in, rather than condemning, the debauched lifestyle it portrays, Leo tells Deadline.com, “By no means is this film a glorification or some sort of promotion of this lifestyle and those who say it is are missing the point entirely. These people are what they are and we didn’t want to give them any false sense of sympathy.”

Romeo & Juliet

Back in 1996, a youthful Leo showed huge promise as he flourished amid the colour, poetry and beauty of Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of this Shakespeare classic. Yes, his craft has developed since these early days but the passion and anguish conveyed by DiCaprio in his role as Romeo Montague set the precedent for even greater things to come.

Blood Diamond

The Great Gatsby

In this spectacular bonanza of the senses, Leo is once again a fundamental pillar in the production as he plays Jay Gatsby, a tragic figure hopelessly in love with the one woman he cannot have. Speaking to Digital Journal, the actor asks, “Aren’t we all Jay Gatsby? I think everyone has some sort of connection to Gatsby as a character. He’s a character who has created himself according to his own imagination and dreams. Gatsby was a poor youth in the Midwest and created this image that was the Great Gatsby. It’s the American dream. I think we can all relate to the dreamer in Gatsby. Each of us gets excited by the prospect of someone who has – we identify with somebody who has that much ambition.”

22

In another hard hitting tale of exploitation, Leo expertly adopts the role of a white gunrunner jailed after attempting to smuggle diamonds out of Sierra Leone. He handles this powerful character with panache and in true Leo style. This film also showcased an additional facet to the talented actor since he was required to adopt a broad South African accent throughout the film. He perfected the accent by hanging out with locals. Leo told movies.about.com that he would drink “beers with them, hearing their stories - a lot of guys from the South African military. I got to hang out with this guy [who was] really a sort of military expert and just listening to them talk.”

Django Unchained

In this Tarantino production, Leo takes on the role of cruel plantation owner Calvin Candie. DiCaprio masterfully embodies the decadent rich white population of America’s pre-Civil War South who terrorised many slaves throughout the age. The cast members were stretched to their limits for various reasons: filming took place in extreme temperatures and, in one particular scene Leo slammed his hand down onto the table straight onto a glass. Speaking to Hollywood Reporter, Leo described how his “hand started really pouring blood all over the table. Maybe they thought it was done with special effects. I wanted to keep going. It was more interesting to watch Quentin’s and Jamie’s reaction off-camera than to look at my hand.” After the take, the room erupted in a standing ovation. “We did it bloodied and bandaged for the rest of the movie,” says DiCaprio, to give Tarantino the option of using it. “I’m glad Quentin kept it in.”

Best

Dressed

Our pick of the ten best-dressed celebrities straight from the red carpet at this year’s Academy Awards.

1. Lupita Nyong’o. The 12 Years a Slave

star wins our Best Dressed 2014 gong hands down. A collective gasp was heard as Lupita stepped out onto the red carpet in her custom made pale blue Prada gown. The actress told journalists that the colour of the dress reminded her of her native Kenya.

2. Jennifer Lawrence. The simplicity of

J-Law’s column Dior dress is the key to its magic. The tomato red shade of her gown provided a welcome splash of colour amidst the predominantly nudes tones of most celebs on the 2014 red carpet.

3. Charlize Theron. She may be 38 years

old but Charlize oozes sex appeal in this Dior Haute Couture gown, which features a plunging neckline and a dramatic full sheer skirt. She accessorizes with Christina Louboutin heels and a Harry Winston diamond pendant.

4. Kate Hudson. Kate looks sassy and sensational in a shimmering silver Versace dress. We love the combination of its plunging neckline and demure cape shoulders. 5. Sandra Bullock. The Gravity star looks effortlessly elegant in a strapless Alexander McQueen gown; its deep blue shade and sweetheart neckline is a perfect match for the actress. 6. Julia Roberts. No stranger to the red car-

pet, Roberts packs some serious fashion punch in a black lace Givenchy number.

7. Angelina Jolie. The Hollywood A-lister

shines in a metallic Ellie Saab gown, which fitted like a glove and dazzled red carpet onlookers.

8. Cate Blanchett. The Blue Jasmine actress

also joins the nudes and creams brigade with a Giorgio Armani Prive gown, which embodies old school Hollywood glamour with its capped sleeves and blush coloured embellishments.

9. Anne Hathaway. Her high-fashion halter-

neck Gucci gown is a real winner. We love the heavy metal plate embellishment, which makes this black dress anything but boring.

10. Margot Robbie. Almost unrecognizable

with her new brunette locks, The Wolf of Wall Street beauty wears Saint Lauren by Hedi Slimane. Dark berry lipstick completes the sultry look.

So Gravity and 12 Years A Slave dominated at the Oscars 2014 but which of the nominees are watchable films? Here is our critique of this year’s big contenders. By Amber O’Shaughnessy

12 Years a Slave

Gravity

Dallas Buyers Club

“A rare example of award ceremonies getting it right,” says Mark Kermode, journalist at The Guardian. That’s right – Steve McQueen’s tale of slavery won the Best Picture Oscar at the Academy Awards, the prize known as ‘the big one’ by critics and cineastes and quite rightly so. Not an easy watch, due to the haunting subject matter of the film but nevertheless a masterclass in acting and storytelling, 12 Years a Slave educates and ennobles the viewer. Based on the true-life story of Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) who is kidnapped from New York and sold into slavery in the south, McQueen handles the narrative with authenticity and skill. Lupita Nyong’o, who adopts the role of slave girl Patsey, delivers a heart wrenching performance, striking just the right balance between spirited and fragile. 12 Years a Slave should also be credited for its musical score, which provides the perfect accompaniment to the action. It is when watching films like this that you realise that mere words are not sufficient to convey the emotion of a story. McQueen ensures that every aspect of film production merge magically together to create an exquisite tale.

Never a huge fan of sci-fi, I went to a screening of Gravity by sheer chance – a friend had bought two tickets to watch it at the Imax Cinema in London and I felt that in light of this, I should give it a go. The experience of watching this creation by Alfonso Cuarón truly was like being on a totally different planet. Robbie Collin, film critic at The Telegraph describes Gravity as “heartachingly tender” – those words would never normally appear in the same sentence as ‘sci-fi’, but strangely enough, you cannot help but relate to attractive couple Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as they float 375 miles above the earth’s crust. Aside from the incredible 3D effects (the film quite rightly won Best Cinematography), Gravity is like a white-knuckle ride on the most hellraising rollercoaster from start to end. It was only as the credits started to roll that I realised I had probably taken about three breaths throughout the entire 91 minutes. Boasting incredible vistas of planet earth and spell binding performances from Bullock and Clooney, we say Gravity most definitely deserved its seven Oscar awards – go and see it (even those of you less avid sci-fi fans) to decide for yourself!

Aside from shedding a quarter of his weight for the role as ravaged rodeo redneck Ron Woodroof, Mathew McConaughey’s outstanding acting performance in this film means he is a deserving winner of the Best Actor Oscar. Diagnosed with Aids and given just 30 days to live, Woodroof sets off for Mexico to seek alternative medication for his condition. He subsequently sets up a private members club to administer these unapproved drugs to fellow Aids victims. Do not expect a Hollywood tale of selfenlightenment from this film, for Woodroof remains the same beer-swigging, smoothtalking, rodeo-loving man he always has been, despite his looming demise. It is the gritty and genuine nature of the storyline that makes Dallas Buyers Club such a realistic portrayal of mankind. Even in Woodroof’s new friendship with transgender Aids patient Rayon, played by Jared Leto in an equally Oscar-worthy performance, the relationship is solely opportunistic until much later on. This is a powerful statement on the Aids culture that hit the United States in the mid-1980s – bravo!

The Wolf of Wall Street The star of this film directed by Michael Scorese is, of course, our cover guy Leonardo DiCaprio and we have already said much about his appearance in The Wolf… Don’t just take our word for it, go and see this fast paced black comedy, which deals with hedonistic themes of drug use, corruption and prostitution to see what all the hype is about.

Blue Jasmine Cate Blanchett won the Best Actress award for her role as Jasmine in this Woody Allen film, which tells the tale of a former Upper East Side socialite who is forced to leave her pampered life when her husband is imprisoned for his financial swindles. Penniless and struggling to deal with the abrupt termination of her life of charity lunches and weekends in the Hamptons, Jasmine resorts to moving into the cramped San Fran apartment of her sister. Blanchett expertly conveys the trials and tribulations of such a scenario with raw emotion so that it is impossible not to sympathise with her character; a short and sweet cinematic treat, which is most definitely worth a watch.

L

American Hustle David O’Russell’s black comedy brings outrageous wigs, ingenious one-liners and a whole lot of irony to the big screen. American Hustle tells the story of skilful con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) who is forced by a wild FBI agent (Bradley Cooper) to set up an elaborate sting operation on corrupt politicians. In this intoxicating world of pretend sheikhs and Jersey mafia, self-deception and hustle is what gets you through the day. Irv is married to highly-strung and very unpredictable Rosalyn, acted by Jennifer Lawrence, who brings a touch of heady enticement to the film along with the beautiful Amy Adams, who plays the role of Irving’s sexy mistress. Raw emotion, life and death stakes and suppressed madness all simmer to the top of this fantastic tale of entrapment.

THE MAKEUP MASTER CLASS By Nicola McGeorge

Hollywood starlet Jennifer Lopez is best known for her signature bronzed “lit from within” look. Nicola McGeorge shows you how to recreate this red carpet look.

STEP 1

Apply Oskia Get Up & Glow, a serum which doubles as an illuminator, leaving skin looking revitalized, healthier and smoother with a youthful, radiant glow. Perfect for this dewy bronzed look.

STEP 4

STEP 5

Line the lower rim with Dior Crayon Eyeliner Waterproof in Intense Brown. Really work this into the lower lashes with a smudger brush. Just under this line apply Urban Decay Snakebite shadow to build up the golden effect. With a flat liner brush apply MAC Pigment ‘Vanilla’ to the inner rim.

Curl lashes with the Shu Uemura eyelash curler, holding down for 30 seconds and apply Christian Dior DiorShow Blackout Waterproof Mascara. Use Sephora Targeted Eye Remover Swabs to remove any shadow, which might have dropped onto the under-eye area, leaving it ready for concealing.

STEP 7 Using a slanted face brush, work MAC Trace Gold, a sheer shimmer tone blush under the cheekbones. Next, using a sponge, dab Benefit Moonbeam, a golden highlighter, on the places that would naturally catch the light; top of the cheek bones, bridge of the nose, cupid’s bow. Finish this with a dusting of MUFE HD Powder along the t-zone.

34

STEP 2

Using a foundation brush, layer on Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Foundation Primer, which creates a perfect canvas for foundation application. Next, move onto the brows and fill in gaps with the MAC Brow Pencil then add definition with HiBrow shadow using a slanted brow brush.

STEP 8 Line lips, define and accentuate with MAC Spice, then fill lips in with Kiko Lip Pencil 08. Spray MAC Fix+ to set makeup and add radiance.

STEP 9 Apply NUXE Huile Prodigieuse, a shimmery, multi-usage golden dry oil over arms and décolleté to make body glisten.

STEP 3

Dab Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion all over the lids to keep everything in place. Next, using a cream shadow, brush pat Chanel Illusion D’Ombre in Initiation all over the lid to just above the crease. Buff this out and then, using the same brush, apply Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow in Beach Bronze over the lid. The shimmer from the Chanel shadow will still shine through. Work Chanel Illusion D’Ombre in Fatal into the crease and the outer corner of the eye, winging it out slightly. Finally apply a tiny amount of MAC Pigment ‘Vanilla’ in the inner corner of the eye to brighten the area and pull the eyes apart, also highlight under the brow bone with the same shade; blend, blend, blend.

STEP 6 With a Beauty Blender Sponge apply Chanel Vitalumiere, a creamy and luxuriously lightweight foundation, which blends effortlessly for perfectly smooth, even-toned, radiant skin. Next conceal any remaining imperfections with Chanel Correcteur Perfection. To diminish under-eye shadows work Clinique Airbrush Concealer onto any dark areas, then set with MUFE HD powder.

GET THE

Red Carpet GLOW

So how do celebrities achieve flawless, glowing, Oscar-ready skin? Nicola McGeorge reviews the Ling Energy Lift Facial, the latest treatment at Pure Skin Beauty, which is loved by the A-List for prepping their skin for the biggest night in Hollywood.

cannot tell you how much I have been looking forward to trying out the new Ling treatment. Personally, when it comes to facials I like a treatment that incorporates state-of-the-art technology. There is only so much that lotions, potions and massaging can do. So when Sofia Saide, the owner of Pure Skin Beauty, called me to explain the benefits of her latest treatment I practically sprinted down to the salon. This innovative facial and body wellness treatment utilizes the extraordinary properties of Tourmaline, a semi-precious gemstone also referred to as the ‘magic’ tone. Energy Lift combines the infusion of far-infrared rays and Asian health principles, to stimulate the body’s selfhealing and rejuvenation properties for increased wellness of the mind, body and face.

What can you expect?

The treatment begins face down (strange I know, but bear with me.) Sofia used the Energy Lift wellness on my back, spinal area, neck and shoulders to open the meridian channels for proper ‘chi’ energy movement and lymphatic drainage, spending more time on the areas where I hold tension. After 20 minutes of this I was so relaxed that Sofia had to ask me three times to turn around. Wiping the drool off my face, I lay back down and let Sofia get to work on a much needed deep cleansing, steam, thorough extraction and a divine facial massage to get the blood circulation going. Next up was the papaya peel designed to exfoliate dead and unhealthy skin cells, unclog pores and smooth skin texture; this was followed by the Ginseng Collagen Infusion mask. Key ingredients are saturated into a luxurious cotton mask to infuse vital nutrients into the skin for immediate benefits. Formulated with Panax Ginseng to revive and tone, collagen to firm and Hyaluronic Acid to soothe and hydrate, results are immediate.

36

believe it. My eyebrows had lifted to where they were in my 20s and the new lines on my forehead (I have had a stressful year) had actually disappeared. Sofia laughed at my shocked expression. All I could say was, “How often can I have this done?” Believe me when I say you have to try this for yourself and see the results; you can thank me afterwards.

It was nearly time for the Energy Lifting, but before we could start Sofia applied Apple Stem Cellular Energy, an age-defying youth boosting solution, which is highly effective in diminishing the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and crow’s feet. This was paired with the DNA DoNotAge Cellular Youth Extension, where Renovage™ (Teprenone) is infused with peptides to create an innovative and potent anti-aging formula to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Now drum roll please - it was finally time to experience the Holy Grail in facials. The Energy Lift Therapy feels like a warm stone being massaged across your face. It can feel quite hot at certain points but not enough to make you uncomfortable, quite the opposite in fact. Sofia applied it to my acupressure points before performing one of the most relaxing experiences of my life. She used the Energy Lift in a series of sweeping movements over my skin, which I never wanted to end. A state of bliss would be an understatement. After the treatment had ended I was jabbering away to Sofia for about ten minutes before I actually looked in the mirror. I couldn’t

Now I couldn’t do a red carpet special without mentioning Pure Skin’s other red carpet treatment. Align yourself with the Hollywood A-list and try Intraceuticals oxygen facials. Jessica Biel recently admitted that her glowing skin on Oscars’ night was down to this facial. Perfect for any skin type, you will see instant visible results during this cooling, calming treatment. Your skin will look and feel years younger, visibly lifted, toned and hydrated. I try to book in twice a month as the results are incredible. I only have to put on the minimal amount of makeup the following day and, since I usually coat myself in the stuff, the difference it makes is clearly visible. And voila! With the help of Sofia and her team your skin will be smooth, supple and ready for its close-up. WE’VE GOT INCH LOSS

ALL WRAPPED UP

Nicola McGeorge reviews the Shrinking Violet Body Wrap treatment at Golden Tarts in Puerto Banús. This new inch loss wrap, which is loved by celebs, is a painless, effortless process that can successfully remove fat in problem areas such as thighs, buttocks and abdomen.

S

ince Golden Tarts opened in La Cala in 2010, I have been secretly stalking them on Facebook. I was instantly intrigued by their unique, tongue-in-cheek concept. With a slogan of ‘Improving what your Mama gave ya’ and each member of staff being given their own nickname, from Tartan Tart to Man Tart, a ride aboard the aptly named Tart-tanic was definitely going to be a unique experience. As the years went by their following continued to grow, exploding after they featured on TOWIE. Clients have since ranged from Saudi royalty to American soap stars. Then came the launch of their second salon, this time located in Puerto Banús. With many companies struggling to keep their heads above water, the tarts were not only surviving, they were now taking over the port. So, FINALLY I decided to see what the fuss was all about. I opted to try out the Shrinking Violet body wrap; even though I am not overweight, no matter how much I diet or exercise there are certain areas of my body that just won’t budge, hence I wanted to see if this treatment could shift those last stubborn inches. Upon arrival I was offered a drink by the charming Man Tart before being introduced to my therapist Dorret, AKA Fit Tart, and taken into a sumptuously decorated treatment room. A personal trainer with 25 years experience under her belt, you couldn’t ask for a more knowledgeable therapist on the topic of inch loss than Dorret. Following a consultation, Dorret took

38

my measurements and then began dry-body brushing my skin to stimulate blood circulation and the lymphatic system. The Shrinking Violet lotion was then expertly massaged into my skin and a unique heat- inducing wrap wrapped around my body.

The active ingredient is phospholipid fraction, which is pre-blended with essential oils, which contain a cellulite aromatherapy blend. The lights were turned down low and I was left to relax while having a delicious hand and foot massage. After an hour I was done, unwrapped and re-measured. Even Dorret was shocked. I had lost on all areas including a whopping 1.5 inches on my love handles. As a series of six wraps are recommended, I signed up there and then. On top of all this Dorret showed me a series of bespoke exercises to help work on my problem areas. What more could I ask for? After my treatment, I sat down with co owner Sarah or Golden Tart as she is fondly known. “I had never run a salon before,” she admitted when I asked

her about the salon’s success. “But I knew the key to its success would lie in creating a community. I also feel very strongly about retaining the same staff. Clients want to see familiar faces. The one misconception that we do get is that people think we just cater for young clients. This couldn’t be further from the truth. At our La Cala salon our main clientele is 35 plus.” “We want to be more than just another salon on the Coast. For example we are also academy training beauticians in the Shrinking Violet Body wrap, manicures and pedicures, with more treatments to be added later this year.” My experience was all that I had hoped for. Fun, informative, glamorous and most importantly I got the results I was after. I am just wondering if they will take me on as honorary tart - now what could my name be? ow come on! You didn’t think I would do a Hollywood beauty special without mentioning the infamous Hollywood Wax did you? If you don’t know what that is, then which rock have you been hiding under for the past decade?

After many painful experiences a friend recommended that I pay a visit to Solange, the Queen of Waxing (a title she rightly deserves) and I haven’t missed my monthly appointment since. Not only is she damn good at her job, her prices are fantastic.

Gone are the days when just a little trim would do it’s now all about extreme waxing. Hailed as the beauty treatment of the past 10 years, it has been referenced numerous times in Sex And The City and even Mrs Beckham thinks that it ought to be compulsory once you hit 15. Actress Eva Longoria was also quoted as saying that, “Every woman should try it once. And then the sex they have afterward will make them keep coming back.”

A treatment with Sol takes place in the boutique style Natural Beauty Studio in the Cristimar Center, Puerto Banús, where hairdressing and nail services are also on offer. Sol immediately puts you at ease with her matter of fact manner and dry sense of humour (very necessary during this treatment.) She offers all types of waxing (using strips or hot wax.) A large portion of her clientele is male but, thankfully for Sol, the ‘back, sack and crack’ wax trend hasn’t caught on here yet.

So are you a Brazilian or a Hollywood type of girl? Before I get technical, I just want to mention that in London extreme waxing is offered by most salons, however I was surprised to find this was not the case in Spain. When I did eventually find a salon that could provide this service, either the price was extortionate or the treatment wasn’t performed correctly.

So down to the nitty-gritty: Brazilian waxing - Leaves a small strip, triangle or oval shape piece of hair at the front. Hollywood waxing - The total removal of hair. So the question now is - do you dare to go bare?

Prices Bikini Wax €10 Brazillian/Hollywood Wax €20 All other wax treatments are available. Natural Beauty Studio C.C Cristimar 1st Floor, Local 3 Puerto Banús Tel +34 619 457 064

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

A Tortured Soul S

elf-harming has recently been thrust into the limelight again, after it was revealed that fashion designer and long-term partner of Mick Jagger, L’Wren Scott, had been self-harming in the weeks before she committed suicide.

Other famous self-harmers include Hollywood actor Johnny Depp: “My body is a journal in a way. It’s like what sailors used to do, where every tattoo meant something, a specific time in your life when you make a mark on yourself.” The English comedian Russell Brand opened up about self-harming as a teen saying, “I get fixated when I am bleeding. When I cut myself, the drama of it calms me down.”

relief. Remember, self-injury is a sign of distress not madness.

Why do people harm themselves?

Self-harm may serve a number of purposes at the same time. You may selfinjure to punish yourself if you feel you have done something wrong or because you feel you have not measured up in some way to your own standards. You may self-injure to tell others how you feel or it may even be a way to communicate to someone close to you about your suffering. It can also happen when you feel disconnected from others or yourself; it may be used to make you feel something. If you have suicidal thoughts or urges, you may self-injure to avoid acting on these.

Self harm doesn't mean I'm weak, it means I'm hurting.

So what is self-harm?

It is a way of expressing very deep distress. Often people do not know why they do it. It’s a means of communicating what can’t be put into words or even into thoughts and has been described as an inner scream. Many people associate self-harm with cutting. It is actually a much broader term. People may injure or poison themselves by scratching, cutting or burning their skin, hit themselves against objects, pull out their hair, take a drug overdose or swallow/put things inside themselves. It may also take on a less obvious form, including taking unnecessary risks, staying in an abusive relationship, developing an eating disorder or addiction to drugs/alcohol or simply someone not looking after their own emotional or physical needs. These responses may help someone to cope with feelings that overwhelm them; painful emotions, such as rage, sadness, emptiness, grief, self-hatred, fear, loneliness and guilt. These feelings can build up inside, until they become unbearable and the only way to find relief is to self-harm, distracting from the emotional pain by concentrating on a physical one. But, if the underlying emotional issues are not dealt with, each episode may only provide temporary

Who self-harms?

The truth is everyone can be at risk from self-harming at some point in their life. Popular culture would have you believe that predominantly young girls self-harm, however the majority of my patients who self-harm are actually both male and female adults. Any difficult experience can cause someone to self-harm. Common causes include: * Pressures at school or work * Bullying * Money worries * Sexual, physical or emotional abuse * Bereavement * Confusion about sexuality * Breakdown of relationships * Illness * Difficult feelings, such as depression, anxiety, anger or numbness, experienced as part of a mental health problem.

Self-harm in adolescents

This is quite commonly seen in boarding schools where competitiveness could apply not only to academic work, appearance or popularity but also to self-harm. When working with teens it is important to look

Getting help?

Self-injury is not a life-sentence, and people can and do stop self-injuring. The important thing is to start talking to someone you trust; it could be a friend, family member or an expert. Remember, it takes time for people to learn that their feelings won’t destroy them. The most helpful treatment for people who selfharm is any form of talking therapy. Spring inspired

Spaces By Bradleigh Reed, from FOC Design

I

have a real appreciation for the beginning of this up-and-coming season. There’s that sweet smell in the air and hints of the warmth of summer to come that just begs us to spring into action! There’s something about the change of season that brings with it a positive change, it is indeed a time of rebirth, renewal and re-growth. Flowers are blossoming, birds are chirping, our days are brighter, houses are looking their best and people are feeling good too. Let’s face it, besides the hayfever, there’s not much not to like about springtime. Nature couldn’t be more alive, full of colour, beauty and rejuvenation so why not take inspiration from the world outside and apply it to ourselves and the constructed spaces around us? Between the March madness and spring showers I hope we will all find the time to celebrate warmer weather with cheerful hues, eye-catching pieces and fresh styles as we, and our homes, head towards the summer. To help you welcome the start of the season with a refreshed outlook here’s a bit of inspiration from the FOC Design team, some springtime treats for your home.

It’s amazing how these unassuming contemporary Tomasella metal tables can really transform a space. Their simple structures come in a range of colours, finishes and, most importantly, a range of funky, bold designs. Three different sizes are available, from bedside tables to coffee tables.

With Easter weekend upon us, I could not resist sharing this gorgeous, yet funny rabbit-inspired chair with you. Created by the weird and wonderful Merve Kahramen, this piece draws parallels with Alice and Wonderland, with the chair reflecting both the subtle innocence of Alice and the wild imagination of the Mad Hatter. Beautifully finished in a smooth cream lacquer, upholstered in leather and luscious, this is the perfect Easter inspired chair. Its moose-inspired cousin is also well worth a look!

Covered in brass butterflies, which bejewel this stunning chandelier, this light would bring any room to life. This piece is more than just a lighting fixture; delicately artistic, the hovering wings create a dramatic silhouette. It is a truthful legacy of Koket’s haute couture experience in exceptional goods, fanciful figures and hand-crafted drama.

HOME COUTURE Cliché as it may be, especially for an interior designer, to use the phrase ‘trés chic,’ there is simply no better way to summarise these fabulous new wallpaper collections by Harlequin. An interesting combination of innovative techniques and textures has been used to create this breathtaking range of stunning and diverse wallpapers. Inspired by vintage pieces and flea market finds, Harlequin has translated them into a stunning range of alluring wallpapers. They appear classic and elegant, yet possess a very modern-day edge with a sleek and contemporary appeal.

Whilst meandering through the world of interiors I found these beautiful tinted glass colours creeping back into home décor this spring. So let the sun shine in, with fresh new hues we love. These wine glasses, bowls and even wine decanters are the perfect way to bring some subtle colour into your home this spring. After all, it’s always nice to see the world through rose tinted glasses, isn’t it?

I adore these pieces by Bleu Nature, where nature meets modern technology. From bedside tables to lamps, these pieces are erosions frozen in time, bringing nature into modern interiors. The unique vision of the modern acrylic glass complements and contrasts the natural texture and grain of the driftwood. Exclusive to Bleu Nature, they demonstrate a true technical prowess. Every branch is beautiful and unique in telling its individual tale. All available at FOC Design: Av de Gustavo Adolfo Becquer, 16 Nueva Andalucía T. 952 817 129 info@wearefoc.com focdesign.es

Combine this with the prospect of undertaking this exercise in a foreign land and the task starts to feel like mission impossible. With so many decisions to be made and so much on offer on the market it is hard to know where to start, what budget to set and when the long list of fittings and fixtures will ever end. This is why the FOC team was created and where it excels; turning the intimidating and formidable chore into a pleasurable and enjoyable experience. With over a decade of insight into the industry and even more years of knowledge of the Coast, FOC can expertly plan any project, from a simple refurbishment to building an entire restaurant. ...turning an intimidating and formidable chore into a pleasurable and enjoyable experience.

HOME COUTURE It seems that creating a flawless space is not so simple and these professionals know the rules to apply in order to make a design and distribution work for the end user. “It is important to realise that a residential project is completely different to a commercial one. Not just in terms of design but also with regard to the functionality of the layout. Many finishes and furnishings that may catch your eye are perfect for a wine bar or a club, but perhaps not so easy to live with day in, day out” Hayley explains. “It is part of our responsibility to guide our clients with regard to fabrics and wallpapers, furniture finishes and tiles etc. It is our job to make sure that the products provided suit the style and design scheme and that their application is suitable to the location.” “Working together as a team we look at every detail of the project. This not only allows us to follow the brief from start to finish, but enables us to control cost and schedule works to a timeframe. Many projects run away from the client because of unforeseen costs or requirements. By assessing the project in its entirety we can help cover all building and design elements, bringing the project in on time and within budget.”

“By listening to what the client is trying to achieve, their likes and dislikes and where they initially need our help means that we can accomplish the goals in the correct order and build a bespoke design scheme, providing necessary renders and plans in order to help our clients imagine the finished product, making sure they are happy with everything before they start purchasing products and materials.”

FOC Design works as a tight unit and collaborates only with professional craftsmen to ensure that the high quality of furnishings is matched by the build and finish.

“Although a little more of our time is invested in the layout and initial design work” Hayley continues, “ultimately this saves time and potential losses when it comes to building and implementation, as we avoid mistakes and complications down the road”. The team has been streamlined in order to make sure important details are covered. Specialists in lighting, air conditioning, sound and television, space distribution, interior design and even legislation and building regulations are all at your disposal. TROPICALIA

These are fun and sophisticated and can adapt to any interior, depending on how colours and materials are used; combining colours evokes a sense of playfulness, while sophistication can be created by using a single colour. There is invariably elegance in leather.

PAPPELINA

Established in 1998, Lina Rickardsson discovered her life’s passion after visiting a weaving loom which inspired her to attend a weaving school in Gothenburg. Since then her passion has turned into a huge success, both in her native Sweden and internationally, as she weaves highly original plastic rugs that exhibit a variety of patterns, shapes and smart colour combinations and all of which are manufactured in Sweden.

BANJOOLI

This unique chair is inspired by the mating dance of the male ostrich, who stretches his wings to show off his beauty to the female; in the Wolof language, this ritual is termed “banjooli”. Likewise, this vibrant chair is playful and flirtatious with its African colours which are intricately hand-woven into a singular striking piece, thanks to its handmade production.

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the BMW i3 89

TORQUE TALK

S

ometimes you just need to clear the decks of preconceptions to get a result, and that is exactly what BMW has done with their new BMW i sub-brand. A big dose of imagineering has been used here, and out of the starting blocks, BMW i have created a spectacular pair of cars for the 21st Century, and a well thought through support structure around them.

in ‘Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol’ two years ago, the flagship i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid will be along during 2014 as the image building sports model. Right now however, the i3 electric city car has just made its debut in BMW showrooms around the world. Crisply styled in a futuristic way, the BMW i3 uses a completely new design language to define its identity. Naturally, the cars brand identity is symbolised by the familiar BMW grille on its nose, even

though in this case no air flows through it, and there is no engine behind. The i3 is more than just another electric car, and hides a wealth of technical innovation under its futuristic looking skin. At 3,999mm in overall length, 1,775mm wide, and 1,578mm tall on a 2,570mm wheelbase, the i3’s footprint is exactly as big as it needs to be to provide spacious accommodation for four people and their luggage with good all round visibility. Its flat sides and short overhangs also make it easy to manoeuvre and park in town.

TORQUE TALK

Batteries are heavy, and with that in mind, BMW sought to remove weight from other areas of the car so that the i3’s final kerb weight would be on the light side of reasonable for a car of this size and type. The main reason modern cars in general are getting heavier is the weight of passive crash safety systems and luxury equipment, so BMW turned to unconventional materials to compensate. Carbon-fibre, ultra light and super strong, is accepted as de riguer for racing cars and the most exotic of road going supercars, but not for a normal family hatchback like the i3. The major reasons for this are high cost and the relatively slow production process compared to stamping out steel or aluminium panels. Taking the bull by the horns, BMW set out to invent a new high-volume, low-priced production process for manufacturing carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFPR), and their success has resulted in the lightest and stiffest body-in-white of any car of this size. Despite the huge holes in the bodyshell for the doors and rear hatch, the torsional rigidity of the CFRP and aluminium shell is an impressive 30,000

Nm/degree of twist, which is about as stiff as a 5-Series saloon. It is that stiff structure that makes the pillarless double side doors possible. The passenger protection cell or “LifeDrive” structure, as BMW calls it, is made from carbon-fibre and aluminium, with cast aluminium attachment points for the suspension towers and sub-frames bolted on. The floorpan uses a combination of aluminium sections as its ‘chassis rails’ along with carbon-fibre fill panels. The carbon-fibre sills have a honeycomb filling to absorb impact energy and improve structural integrity. The front and rear crash modules are mainly aluminium. Despite the lack of B-pillars to brace the flanks of the car in side impacts, the EU tests report good roll over protection, while cabin intrusion from a side impact with a lamppost is significantly less compared to a conventional steel bodied car with B-pillars. Other cleverly designed honeycomb sections placed in strategic positions such as between the front tyres and the base of the A-pillars absorb impacts in a progressive manner and transfer the loadings into the shell. Drag coefficient

is 0.29, with 0.3 for the Range Extender version due to the need for a radiator in front and its wider rear wheels. The suspension is conventional BMW, with McPherson struts in front and a five-link independent rear end. The suspension uprights are cast aluminium, while the lower suspension arms are forged alloy. There is a hollow anti-roll bar in front, and none at the rear. The drive shafts are also hollow. BMW built its reputation on making sporty handling cars, and the i3 is no different. The clean sheet of paper allowed a no compromise placement of the batteries, and so the heaviest single element of the car is the 240kg Lithium-Ion battery pack. Measuring 1600 x 900 x 210mm, this sits in the centre of the car low down on the floorpan, helping to create a low centre of gravity. Kerb weight is a modest 1,195kg according to the DIN standard, or 1,270kg by EU measure, which places an average sized 75kg driver on board. This puts the i3 on par with the latest VW Golf. Incidentally, it takes between 20 and 22 hours to build an i3. Batteries have an optimum operating temperature, and do not like to be too hot or cold. In this case, there are no cooling fans and the air-conditioning

91

TORQUE TALK

refrigerant is used in a cooling circuit to keep the batteries at the right temperature, whether or not the airconditioning is switched on. Extreme outside temperatures that require heating or cooling suck battery power most at the stage where the system is struggling to raise or lower cabin temperatures. BMW get over that by allowing the driver to pre-condition cabin temperature while the car is still attached to the mains charger. Thus, mains electrical power does the heavy lifting to set the correct cabin temperature before you unplug the i3 and move off. This can be controlled remotely via an iPhone app. The i3 has the best electric power steering of any current BMW model. Just on the lighter side of medium weighted, it is smooth and progressive to the fingertips, and perfectly in tune with the chassis turn-in rate. It is the first point of contact with a series of additive dynamic traits that make the i3 feel agile, responsive and stable. Visually, the i3 benefits from standard 19-inch diameter alloy wheels, which are large enough to give the car its balanced and harmonious appearance. 20-inch wheels are an option, but you can be sure they will not help the ride quality, and are frankly un-necessary on a car of the i3’s modest size.

92

the car will be used mainly in cities where getting a puncture is less of a drama. However, as low rolling resistance is part and parcel of the i3’s eco-remit, and it has a very low centre of gravity, the grip they provide is actually more than adequate for its role as a town and suburban car. These relatively narrow tyres and the rear-wheel-drive configuration produce the added benefit of a very tight turning circle, making good manoeuvrability an i3 strong suit. Coupled to the commanding seating position, the big greenhouse helps visibility and gives occupants a good view of the surroundings. In this respect, the i3 is a great place to be for driver and passengers alike, and the aura of light and space in the cabin can be further enhanced by the optional panoramic glass roof. My first encounter with the i3 was as a rear seat passenger at the Frankfurt Motor Show where BMW had a small fleet for shuttling journalists between halls. The cabin immediately struck me as a very nice place to be, with plenty of light, good visibility, along with generous leg and headroom.

While the wheels may be fashionably large in diameter, they are also unfashionably narrow at 5.0J x 19-inch all round with 155/70R19 rubber, with 5.5J x 19-inch with 175/65R19 tyres at the rear for the heavier Range Extender version.

Driving an electric car for the first time can be a daunting experience for noncar enthusiasts who do not want or need more complexity than they are used to in a normal car. BMW has clearly given a lot of thought to the driver-vehicle interface, and the result is a simple, intuitive and ergonomically brilliant Drive controller on the right hand side of the steering column for selecting Drive, Neutral and Reverse. It is also home to separate buttons for Start/Stop and Park.

The Bridgestone Eco tyres are of conventional construction as Runflats are too heavy in this application, and

My past experience with pure electric cars from the Tesla Roadster, MINI E, and e-Ruf to the SLS AMG Electric Drive have

TORQUE TALK

been mixed. Part of the problem is the mental disconnect and preconceptions that arise when dealing with a familiar car powered by a strange, new motor. In the case of the i3, that motor is near silent, which made the suppression of NVH from other sources all the more critical. In the event, BMW has done a very good job of reducing road noise so that your travel experience is pretty serene. Ride quality on the Dutch roads around Amsterdam where the launch was held revealed an absorbent secondary ride on urban and country roads, while a short high-speed blatt down the motorway proved the cars stability at speed. As electric motors produce their peak torque from zero revs, the i3 leaves the start line like a rocket on full throttle, and so will leave most conventional cars for dead in the traffic light grand prix. The 170kW motor is equivalent to 170hp and is backed up by 250Nm of torque. In a car of such modest weight, the result is a 0-100km/h time of 7.2 sec, which equals a Golf GTI Mk 4. However, the torque is consistent, and you can demolish the 80-120km/h increment

Taking the bull by the horns, BMW set out to invent a new highvolume, low-priced production process for manufacturing carbon-fibre reinforced plastic.

93

TORQUE TALK

I never thought I would like an electric car. But the i3 is much more than that... It is a statement of clever design and engineering well executed and is most definitely fit for its stated purpose. in just 4.9 sec, which beats most hot hatches. Top speed is 150km/h, as going any faster rapidly depletes the battery.

is designed in such a way that each of its eight modules can be changed individually should one fail.

In town, the i3’s agility and that slug of torque means you can take advantage of gaps in the traffic and move through them more rapidly than a normal car, which would need to shift down a gear manually or in automatic kick down. Thus, the i3 could well make its mark as the new urban GTI.

BMW are acutely aware of the range limitation of current battery technology, and have offered a comprehensive twopart solution for i3 owners whose journeys might take them beyond the range of their car.

There were a lot of small upstart electric car companies at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. They were conspicuously absent in 2012 and 2013, which says a lot. It requires huge resources and knowhow to broach a new technology successfully, and even when you have the hardware down pat, you need to get out there, market the product and then back it up. Tesla and Fisker have managed it, but everyone else is either struggling or has fallen by the wayside. BMW of course has the resources and know how. They also have their massive global dealer network and the ability to subsidise a new technology rollout and back it to the hilt. On that score, the eight-year or 100,000 km warranty on the battery pack is re-assuring, and the 22.0 kWh battery

94

The first of these is the Range Extender version of the i3, which uses a 60cc two-cylinder motorcycle engine, placed alongside the electric motor in the back to charge the battery for greater range. With a 9.0 litre fuel tank, this can extend the i3’s range from 135 to 300 km. However, as I see it, this defeats part of the purpose of the i3, since it adds 120kg of extra weight and complexity with the usual internal combustion engine’s paraphernalia like a water radiator in front, pipes, fuel tank and so on. The second is built into the ownership package, which recognises the i3 as purely city and suburban transport. If you need to undertake a long trip, the terms of i3 ownership allow you to contact your local BMW dealer who will then provide a conventional petrol or diesel model for that purpose. As it stands, the i3 will take you 135 kms on a full charge, with recharging

time dependent upon the source of electricity. This ranges from eight hours when charged from a domestic socket to just 30 minutes when plugged into an industrial strength power source. My experience with other electric cars has ranged from a feeling of novelty with the Tesla and MINI E to “Oh my God!” with the SLS Electric Drive on a racetrack. However, I came away from my i3 drive with a strong feeling of surprise and delight. Frankly, as a dyed-in-the-wool petrolhead, I never thought I would like an electric car. But the i3 is much more than a mere electric car. It is a statement of clever design and engineering well executed and is most definitely fit for its stated purpose. Most importantly, it is practical, drives well and can be a lot of fun for the keen driver to the point where it appeals to my heart as well as my head. In my book, BMW are the new masters of imagineering.

n the ninth century Andalusia stood in the forefront of cultural, scientific and mercantile achievement. This activity was largely centred on Córdoba, the intellectual centre of Europe. By the next century it had become the most populous city in the known world, with many libraries and universities where medicine, mathematics and astronomy were intensively studied. Its largest library contained close on a million volumes. The Great Mosque of Córdoba dates from this period and under caliph AlHakam II the city also housed in addition some three thousand smaller mosques and splendid palaces. And we must not forget the three hundred public baths! Its fame spread even as far north as Germany where the tenth century Saxon nun, poet and dramatist, Hroswitha, called it “The Jewel of the

Muslims, Christians and Jews lived together in perfect harmony, worshipping

96

peacefully according to their own rites; all people of The Book. It is therefore hardly surprising,

given such a crucible, that it was in Córdoba, rather than Kittihawk, that man made his first flight. And this was in 875 AD rather than 1903 AD (although it has to be admitted that 1903 saw the first mechanised flight by the Wright brothers). Born in Ronda, Abbas Ibn Firnas became a Cordoban scientist and polymath; a sort of Islamic Leonardo de Vinci. He developed an astrolabe, with its chains of rings simulating the movements of historic bodies, and invented a water clock called “AlMaqata”. He also developed the production of glass from sand. He devised a process for cutting and polishing rock crystal which, until then, had been an Egyptian monopoly, thereby greatly improving the Spanish balance of payments. But perhaps his greatest, and largely ignored,

achievement was to fly. Twenty three years before this momentous event, however, another scientist, Armin Firman, had attached wing-like structures to his garments, and jumped off a city tower. As he fell to the ground the wind was caught in his contraption, bore him up, and so he sustained only minor injuries. Perhaps he should be rightly regarded as the inventor of the parachute! Inspired by this idea, Abbas Ibn Firnas began experimenting, with various degrees of success, until came the day when he invited his fellow citizens to witness man’s first flight. He

but failed to correct a stall and so crash landed, breaking his back. He realised that he had failed to provide a tail to his machine, and so was unable to emulate birds who use those appendages to avoid similar situations. As a result of his injury he was unable to

experiment further and, indeed, died in 888 AD as a result of back problems. He has not gone entirely unnoticed by history. His face appears on a Libyan stamp, and Ibn Firnas airport to the north of Baghdad bears his name, with a statue on the road to the international airport in that city. He also has a crater on the moon named in his honour. Nigh on eight centuries later, another Muslim took to the skies. It is quite possible that he was inspired both by Abbas Ibn Firnas and by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) who, in 1502, had produced a design for Sultan Beyazid II for a bridge to straddle the Bosphorus (a design later used in Norway in the latter part of the twentieth century!) Leonardo was, therefore, known to the Turkish cognoscenti. Apart from the bridge, he produced a number of designs for flying machines, even a helicopter, and such knowledge was in the public domain, particularly for a man like Hezârfen Ahmet Çelebi (1609-1640) who was obsessed with aviation.

Hazerfen Ahmet Çelebi

above ground level, and its distance to the square is 3.36 kilometres. (Needless to say, it was the Turkish clergy who persuaded the sultan to exile the intrepid aviator!) Today, Hezârfen appears on a few Turkish stamps, and there is indeed a minor airport named after him.

Perhaps we should let the 17th century Turkish writer Evliyâ Çelebi (1611-1682) take up the tale (which occupies

Artistic impression of te first successful manned flight by Abbas Ibn Firnas

only three sentences of a ten volume work): First, he practiced by flying over the pulpit of Okmeydanı eight or nine times with eagle wings, using the force of the wind. Then, as Sultan Murad Khan was watching from the Sinan Pasha mansion at Sarayburnu, he flew from the very top of the Galata Tower and landed in the Doğancılar Square in Üsküdar, with the help of the south-west wind. Then Murad Khan granted him a sack of golden coins, and said: “This

is a scary man. He is capable of doing anything he wishes. It is not right to keep such people,”

and thus sent him to Algeria in exile. He died there. It is interesting to note that the tower from which he flew is 62.59 metres

Hezârfen Ahmet Çelebi had a brother. His name was Lagari Hazan Çelebi. We are again endebted to Evilyâ Çelebi (apparently not a relative!) for the account. It appears that in order to celebrate the birth of Sultan Murad IV’s daughter, Lagari packed some 65 kilos of gunpowder into a cone with seven wings, and, strapped to it, launched himself from the Topkapi palace. Before the launch he addressed the sultan: “O my sultan! Be blessed! I am going to talk to Jesus!” (who, of course, is acknowledged by Islam as a prophet). Having landed in the Bosphorus, he swam ashore and reported “O my sultan! Jesus sends his regards to you!”. The impressed sultan handed him bags of silver, and gave him the rank of “sipahi” in the Turkish army (presumably to look after the artillery!) When, therefore, we celebrate the achievement of Kittihawk, or see rockets racing off towards the distant stars, perhaps we should listen for a faint ghostly splash from the Bosphorus or the ethereal groan of a sixty-five year old nursing a bad back!

DIVINE Dishes & Drinks AT D-WINE

he SOCIETY MARBELLA team has been closely following the exciting new wine and fine food concept that is D-wine for many months now. We have seen the venue progress from empty shell to state-of-the-art building stocked with one of the most extensive wine collections in the whole of Spain. This month the doors of D-wine finally opened – you can read about the grand unveiling in our ‘Who’s In, Who’s Out’ section. We have presented you with glimpses of this impressive project every step of the way and this month

we bring you a look at the menu. From our exclusive tasting, we can ensure you that D-wine is most certainly not a one-trick pony; the dishes on offer in the restaurant are just as delectable as the copious range of wines available. The kitchen is headed by the very talented Kengo Tomita, who has extensive experience in the culinary world, having worked in exclusive fivestar resorts everywhere from Russia to Dubai. He has created a menu, which comprises both signature Mediterranean

dishes such as Burrata Salad – a whole Italian burrata cheese with raf and cherry tomatoes drizzled in sweet balsamic - as well as a more exotic Japanese influence including Tuna Tartare and Mixed Tempura. All of the dishes are made with the finest local ingredients, for example beef is sourced from the Rubia Gallega breed in Galicia, distinguished by its succulent and tender texture. All of the fruit and vegetables are provided by Cristóbal Ordóñez who owns a 100 per cent organic farm in Coín, a mere 25 minutes away from the

D-wine kitchen. The menu will be composed in a manner that will enable the kitchen to take advantage of the finest seasonal produce.

At the tasting, we indulged in several of the D-wine signature dishes. The Mediterranean Calamari was flavoursome and perfectly cooked; it was served with caramelised onions and roasted yucca plant, which provided an innovative twist on this quintessentially Spanish dish. The Spicy Chicken was also tried and tested. The roasted chicken was glazed in a sweet, sticky sauce that made for a tasty combo far from the usual and, dare we say, slightly boring lemon marinade you so often find paired with poultry. The Chulet贸n of Rubia Gallega steak was melt-in-the-mouth tender and served with a crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside jacket potato. Obviously, wine also featured heavily in our delicious lunch. One of the three D-wine sommeliers was on hand throughout the meal to offer suggestions with each course. He also added that extra special hint of theatre to our dining experience, as he

It is with great pleasure that we can finally urge you to discover D-wine in all its glory for yourselves now that the venue is officially open.

A particular highlight was the 2011 Mas Doix Priorat bottle; with its smoky taste and vanilla undertones it was the ideal partner for our exquisite steak course. The Muscat Jorge Ord贸帽ez was similarly memorable, the tones of baked apple that infused this dessert wine working particularly well with the spicy and salty cheese served on the platter to finish the tasting lunch.

FINE FEASTING for MEAT LOVERS

Newly established ‘Kobe Gourmet’ is an independent butchers and delicatessen; SOCIETY Marbella’s Features Editor speaks to owners Gabriel & Leonor about what makes Kobe the ultimate meat lover’s paradise. What makes the meat sold at Kobe Gourmet Butchery so special? At Kobe we stock only the very finest quality meat, sourced from the leading cattle farms of the world. Our mission is to control every aspect of production methods, from ensuring the highest welfare standards during the cattle rearing process to delivering safe, high quality beef to the tables of our customers. What type of meat products do you sell in the deli? We sell the finest cuts of meat: WAGYU Wagyu is a Japanese beef cattle breed, also known as Kobe. Renowned for its unique taste and tenderness, it makes for an unrivalled eating experience. This red meat is characterised by its high level of mono-unsaturated fat, which has a minimal impact in raising cholesterol levels. ANGUS BEEF FROM NEBRASKA Originally from Aberdeen in Scotland but imported by the US in 1873 and crossed with a Texas cattle breed, Angus Beef boasts superior quality thanks to its marbling. Marbling generally improves flavour and tenderness, and keeps meat moist while cooking. It has an intense red

colour and firm texture, making the cut succulent and tender. GALICIAN BEEF This product stands out for its unmistakeable taste and is considered one of the finest types of meat in the world. The unique thing about the Galician Beef sold at Kobe is that we monitor the process throughout, from our weekly visits to the most renowned cattle breeders to select the finest cuts of meat, to its transportation in our specially designed vehicles. After this the meat is hung in our shop for a minimum of 45 days to allow for the flavours to intensify. CASTILIAN LAMB This meat is just superb. The lamb has a maximum age of just 35 days and has been fed solely on its mother’s milk. The cut’s weight can vary between five and a half and six kilograms. From birth, the lamb is subject to rigorous production methods as outlined by IGP to ensure cuts are organic and of a very high quality. Roasted or simmered in a stew, this lamb will not disappoint even the most demanding of meat eaters. We also sell Iberian pork, free-range chicken, goose, game, Australian kangaroo, as well as other more unusual meat, which we invite you to taste. Aside

from this, we also offer Iberian ham, cold cuts of meat and a wide range of cheeses. Have you always worked in the food and drink industry? Chic To Chic: HOTEL PUENTE ROMANO’S W

e’re usually a fairly predictable bunch here at Society: when we go out after work we are usually looking for a quick meal at a place with fast and friendly service before moving on to somewhere loud and lively for a fun night out. However, just occasionally it’s good to find a restaurant that provides a touch of grown-up glamour and when we find somewhere that delivers on all fronts we like to pass it on. The Sea Grill, located in Marbella’s well-known Hotel Puente Romano, is the ideal venue for the discerning diner who likes to enjoy a five-star dinner in sumptuous surroundings. Puente Romano regulars will immediately recognise this visually impressive place as the former Roberto’s, but a makeover by renowned British interior designer Andrew Martin has not only given it a new lease of life but also transformed it into one of Marbella’s most attractive eating-places. The views of the Mediterranean, although excellent, are now rivalled by Martin’s

charming maître d’ to the knowledgeable sommelier. You could be forgiven for imagining that the Sea Grill would focus on fish and seafood and indeed, Executive Chef Thomas Stork has created some truly fabulous dishes using the finest ingredients from the Mediterranean, but for those of us who are more carnivorous, there is still plenty to enjoy. impressively chic minimalist design. Should we look out of the windows or into the restaurant? At least it gave us a few things to think about as we scanned the menu. On arrival we elected to enjoy a glass of chilled rosé on the terrace, which has also undergone a transformation and is now (in our humble opinion at least) the best place in Marbella to enjoy the sunset. This place will be buzzing during the summer, so enjoy it while you can still find a table! Once seated at our table we were immediately impressed by the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, from the

Given our usual habit of ordering a range of dishes and sharing them between us, the menu told us immediately that we were in the right place. Some might say that dining at the Hotel Puente Romano is a swanky experience, but there is nothing stuffy about the Sea Grill: “The Concept of Sharing is implicit in the design of the Sea Grill menu. Dishes can be shared at the table or enjoyed individually.” This notice, along with an invitation to diners to choose their freshly caught fish from the vitrine, assured us that we were in safe hands. It took us some time to decide, but eventually we selected our line-up. The Tempura Oyster with Red Curry Sauce and Coriander was superb, the red curry sauce

COSTA CUISINE

adding a totally different perspective to this luxurious seafood product. One of the party said, “People who have tried oysters and decided that they don’t like them should try this because they would change their minds.” When paired with the Avocado Salad with Prawns, which had a lovely citrus tang, this was a dish that gained five stars from Society’s informal review panel. An authentic flavour of the east was promised – and delivered – by the Shanghai Noodles with Curried Prawns and Yakitori Sauce, while Southern Asia was also referenced via the Tandoori Chicken Wing Lollipops, which were perfection on a stick.

This dish is far from cheap, but we were so eager to sample this meat famous for its flavour and the fact that these cattle, native to Japan, are massaged to improve the quality of their beef that it took us less than a minute to succumb to its glowing reputation. Our verdict? It is more than justified; this dish has to be eaten to be believed. After this feast there was barely enough room for a delicious trio of desserts, but after a rest we somehow managed it and the Raspberry Sorbet, Raspberry Cheesecake and Fruit Salad with Fresh Cream slipped down all too easily.

Roberto’s was a much loved Puente Romano institution, so it would take a brave move to replace it in the hearts of regular visitors but we all agreed that the Sea Grill has the full package, from a breathtaking new design and brilliant chef in Thomas Stork to an imaginative and tasty menu and wonderfully attentive staff. Throw in a spectacular sunset over the Med and you really have all the ingredients you need for a memorable night out. puenteromano.com Reservations: 952 820 900 restaurantes@puenteromano.com

Deciding to test Sea Grill’s reputation as a top fish restaurant we decided to try a couple of the fish dishes. The seared Red Tuna Steak with Honey and Mustard Parsley Sauce and Monkfish Marinated in Ginger, Mint and Yoghurt served to prove that this is a great place to enjoy the freshest fish, imaginatively prepared and cooked. Both dishes were outstanding and delivered a pure hit of flavour that remained in the memory for days. If you are feeling in a financially expansive mood please do try the Wagyu Beef Entrecôte with Hawaiian Black Salt.

EL GRAN GATSBY

f you really want to feel situated at the heart of the action then Puerto Banús takes some beating. This marina, as has frequently been observed, has the lot, from lively bars and fabulous restaurants to designer boutiques and some of the most amazing superyachts in the Mediterranean. Start with a tinto verano, do a little window – or real – shopping, follow that up with a bit of boat envy (if you speak nicely to that hunky crewman he might just allow you on board for a closer look) but, whatever you do, don’t leave without dining at El Gran Gatsby.

Make your way to Banús’s famous tower and enter one of the most stylish restaurants in town. El Gran Gatsby certainly lives up to its name because, from the minute you step over the threshold, you will be reminded of the grander, more elegant age evoked by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s most memorable novel. As you would imagine, this superb restaurant affords some of the best views on the Coast and incorporates a wonderfully spacious terrace, which is a great place to eat out on all but the coldest days of winter. El Gran Gatsby also includes a Lounge Dance Bar where patrons can sip cocktails and dance to the music provided by the best DJs and live acts. This winning combination of excellent food and fabulous facilities has meant that this has been the address of choice for many large events and is especially popular as a wedding reception venue.

Fortunately we managed to find a table outside with a wonderful view of the port when we visited recently to enjoy the full El Gran Gatsby experience. It was very relaxing to be outside enjoying the unique Banús ambience when, just minutes earlier we had been having a manic day in the office. As one of our party said, “Just order a cocktail, sit back and…breathe!” The cocktails, incidentally, were excellent; one day we will go back and try a few more of these exotic and robustly alcoholic creations. Eventually we decided to try the Taster Menu: these gastronomic marathons are available in many of Marbella’s finest

to perfection and at worst they are pancake-flat, flavour-free disasters containing frozen chips and ancient onion flakes from a bottle that has seen better days. The Gran Gatsby version of this classic dish takes it into another dimension altogether; served in an elegant martini glass, the emulsified Tortilla is a pure shot of flavour underlayed by Caramelised Onions and Crispy Croutons. To quote a certain sci-fi franchise, it’s Spanish Omelette but not as we know it. However, this dish scores full marks for inventiveness and flavour. The other dishes that we sampled were Foie gras Puff Pastry Tart with

establishments now and provide a great way to find out about the chef’s areas of expertise and influences. The Menu Gastronómico at El Gran Gatsby was an indoor fireworks display of flavour, so much so that we wrote pages of notes to remind ourselves of the amazing creations that we ate. The starters consisted of Lollipops of Foie covered in White Chocolate with a Port Reduction, Mini Steaks Tartare with Mini Chips and Mustard and Tempura Prawn with Wasabi Mayonnaise. All of these were absolutely delicious, a terrific combination of old favourites given a modern twist and completely new ideas, which is a great way to start any good meal. One thing was certain; our imaginations were fired up and our taste-buds readied for the next array of dishes. Living in Spain as we do, it is certain that you will have encountered the odd tortilla española or two. At best these are huge, tasty slabs containing thick chunks of potato along with perfectly cooked onion and seasoned

COSTA CUISINE

Sorbet with Gin and Tonic Foam and Sweet Lime and Popping Candy Topping was a real adventure, the popping candy provoking some comment and laughter. We were also presented with Miro’s Chocolate Palette, which consisted of a slate covered in different chocolate delights including White Chocolate Mousse and Chocolate Ganache. If you love chocolate - and who doesn’t, then this is heaven on a plate. As the summer approaches and the days lengthen we know that we will be looking for a venue with Caramelised Apple, Carpaccio of Red Prawn sprinkled with Fresh Almonds and Salmon Roe, Málaga-style Soup with Lobster and Wild Sea Bass; we can heartily recommend all of these dishes and the Menu Gastronómico generally, particularly if it’s your first time at El Gran Gatsby. Another advantage of the taster menu is the fact that it’s easier to pace yourself and leave room for dessert; we were so glad we did, since the Lemon

an exciting and inventive menu and an attractive and expansive outdoor area. It’s great to know that we can always rely on El Gran Gatsby; unlike its literary namesake, this Gatsby provides a very happy ending. El Gran Gatsby Muelle de Honor, Ed. del Mar. Bhavesh and Rajvi enjoyed a magical three day celebration filled with fun, family and friendship.

MEANT TO BE…

We were young, crazy and care free at 17 years old. We knew of each other through friends and in the few times we would bump into each other I would sometimes get a wink and a smile and he would get a little wave back. Who would have known that 17 years later, I would be married to him!

apart and we became quite busy in our own lives but we would call each other now and again over the years just to catch up until one day we decided to meet, enjoying each others company so greatly we began to spend more and more time together before falling completely and utterly in love.

Two years later, we had been well acquainted with each other’s family and friends and we had been on a few holidays together and we were definitely ready to take the next step in our relationship. It was just a case of him popping the question. Last September we

went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do.

It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had Michknown ael and each other. We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.

I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…

The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

I wanted a wedding with a difference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holiday at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

ONE OF A KIND New Hot Yoga Studio Launches in Marbella

W

Photos by davidtomsphotography.com

e are delighted to announce the launch of an exciting new yoga studio - Radiant Yoga Marbella, opening this month. Owned and managed by wellknown multi-lingual yoga teachers and health professionals, Radiant Yoga Marbella already has a strong following of yoga devotees, and offers an excellent programme of yoga classes. Significantly, it is the first yoga facility in the area to offer Hot Yoga - with the aid of state-of-the-art infrared panels - that is widely considered to be one of the most effective yoga disciplines in terms of boosting health and fitness levels. Offering myriad health benefits, Hot Yoga at Radiant Yoga Marbella is practised in a room equipped with infrared panels that heat bodies but not the room. The pervading heat allows students greater flexibility to ease more deeply into the yoga postures. Exercising at a higher temperature elevates the heart rate, making hot yoga a more vigorous workout, while the heat intensifies the detoxifying and calorie-burning elements of the yoga practice. Radiant Yoga Marbella has two, large, bamboo-floored yoga practice rooms, a state-of-the-art infrared heating system for hot yoga, and fully-equipped dressing rooms. The facility incorporates a massage and body therapy area, a relaxing chill-out Tea Lounge, along with a magnificent open solarium terrace where students can practise yoga while basking in the Andalusian sun. Between them, the founders of Radiant Yoga Marbella, Lori Sjollema, Ariane Pieper and Marjan Looije have over five decades of yoga and bodywork experience. Their studio offers a full programme of weekday and weekend classes, with resident and visiting multilingual teachers specialized in different yoga disciplines including Vinyasa flow, Hatha, Therapeutical & Anusara Yoga as well as children’s and pregnancy yoga. Retreats and yoga days with respected international wellness and yoga professionals, as special guests, will add variety to this vibrant new centre for yoga. Easy membership and incentive programs are available as well as excellent introductory offers. Tel: +34 639845185 yoga-in-marbella.net
