Society Marbella published and produced by:

MARCH MEANS THE ARRIVAL OF SPRING – ARE YOU READY FOR IT?

T

his month our plan is to ease you gently into the season of growth and renewal, with some suggestions of how you can start a new, painless regime of healthy eating, get your body ready for the beach and generally put yourself in the best position to have a great Summer. This year will also be a big year for the future of Spain and the UK as both countries look forward to general elections. Podemos has been making headlines internationally and is expected to do well in the Spanish polls but, with Britain looking for its own Pablo Iglesias Turrión, some people are asking...could Russell Brand fit the bill? He certainly has the extensive experience of scandals and inappropriate behaviour at which most politicians seem to excel and he has come up the hard way, which should be good for a few votes, too. You have to hand it to the UK’s most prominent Essex lad, he knows how to hog the headlines and he has even made it on to that platform for political heavyweights, Newsnight and been interrogated by none other than Paxo himself! That’s not too shabby for someone who has experienced monumental heroin addiction problems and was once fired for arriving at work dressed as Osama Bin Laden. Whatever you think of Brand – and many have been very vocal in their condemnation of his every word – the boy doesn’t half know how to make waves. Talking about making waves, what do you think of San Pedro’s transformation? Who would have thought, a decade ago when the whole town was virtually a no-go area with the construction of the multi-storey car park and then the bypass that it would look so amazing?

14

We love its makeover and are so happy that, once again, it’s at the heart of social life on the Coast. Another San Pedro landmark that has just undergone a fabulous rebirth is El Rincón de Sala, which is one of our favourite watering holes. We had no complaints about the way this great venue looked before its facelift but now, believe us, it looks positively stunning. If you haven’t been there recently then you really must drop in on the team and see what they have achieved, which is nothing short of a miracle. Marbella’s Ocean Clinic now boasts an additional floor and has even more capacity to treat its patients who arrive in town to be treated by Dr. Kaye and his growing team of experts. From simple beauty treatments like Botox and facial peels to more complex surgical procedures like rhinoplasty and liposuction, Ocean Clinic is a five-star passport to a new you. Of course, this time of year is awards season, so if you look carefully you might just catch a few references to the Grammys, BAFTAs and Academy Awards. In fact, if you follow the advice of those creative people at FOC you will be able to transform your humble (or maybe not so humble!) abode into an Oscar-winning des res. Maybe we should have named this our Renaissance issue? Anyway, we hope that you enjoy it and pick up a few ideas along the way. Until next time... Andy Clark

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT The colourful Essex lad is turning his attention to the political arena, we look back at his career highs and lows

awareness BRAND Whether you think that he is Britain’s most important voice or a vain poseur with little understanding of the academic jargon that he is so fond of spouting, there is no doubt that Russell Brand knows a thing or two about self-promotion. Society Marbella takes a look at the some of the highs and lows of the court jester of British politics and asks:

is he for real? By India Baltran

20

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

F

rom the time that he made his debut in a school production of Bugsy Malone at the age of 15 it seems that Russell Edward Brand has been addicted to the spotlight. This has led to an interesting and varied career that has, over the years, included stand-up comedy, radio and TV presenting, acting, writing and journalism; not a bad tally for someone who suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and has a boundless capacity for self-sabotage.

“Some people say that you’ve crossed the line, but I don’t think that there is a line, I think people draw the line in just after you have traversed it.”

Despite appearing in various TV projects, including ITV’s popular copshop soap The Bill, Brand first truly entered public consciousness as the presenter of MTV’s Dancefloor Chart and the request show Select, but his days as a video journalist came to a swift end when he arrived at work the day after September the 11th 2001 dressed as Osama Bin Laden. Another lapse in taste would later end his career as a Radio 2 DJ in 2006 when, egged on by his colleague and friend, Jonathan Ross, he made an obscene phone call to Andrew Sachs regarding his granddaughter. Given the fact that the whole of Britain had a massive collective soft spot for Sachs in his guise as the hapless Spanish waiter, Manuel in Fawlty Towers, Brand might as well have goosed the Queen. The resulting firestorm, ably fanned by the tabloids, resulted in both Brand and Ross being banished by the Beeb and another promising career (The Russell Brand Show had proved a hit on its transfer to Radio 2 from Radio 6) bit the dust. His autobiography, My Booky Wook, was published in 2007 in the white heat of the celebrity memoir craze. Brand’s eccentric account of his singular childhood (battles with his stepfather, a distant relationship with his father who introduced him to prostitutes on a visit to Thailand) and battles with heroin addiction nevertheless gripped the public’s imagination and My Booky Wook sold in its millions and garnered mostly positive reviews from the broadsheets’ literary critics,

21

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT although its successor My Booky Wook 2: This Time It’s Personal fared less well. In 2008 he signed a £1.8 million two book deal with Harper Collins and, as part of this, published a collection of his columns for The Guardian under the title Articles of Faith. In 2014 he even published a book for children: presumably most parents will feel it necessary to check Russell Brand’s Trickster Tales: The Pied Piper of Hamelin for inappropriate references before allowing their child within a mile of page one. This reworking of the wellloved fairytale is intended to be the first of a series which will presumably allow Brand to preach his message of social and political revolution to a younger generation. By 2008 Brand was also enjoying more lucrative acting success in Hollywood thanks to a series of medium budget turkeys (his remake of Arthur, the erstwhile Dudley Moore vehicle, was especially badly received). At the same time he had also embarked on a doomed romance with rainbowhaired popsicle, Katy Perry; their lavish October 2010 Indian wedding lasted for several days and became a watchword for tasteless extravagance. In the end the old adage, “the more expensive the wedding, the shorter the marriage” proved accurate and Brand filed for divorce in December 2011, informing Perry by text that, as far as he was concerned, their relationship had run its course. At this point he had become a fully-fledged political gadfly, his appearances on various chat shows having evolved from his original, arguably charming ‘Victorian cockney urchin’ persona to a more confrontational image. Brand wanted revolution and he wanted it now, although his most notorious appearance on Newsnight neatly bisected public opinion into two separate camps – those who thought him a pretentious, if potentially dangerous oaf and those who claimed that he spoke for a new generation of disenchanted voters. Unfortunately for Brand, his ability to win over the disenfranchised and disillusioned has been handicapped by his penchant for jargon, with which he peppers his pronouncements, like a not terribly bright teen who has attended a sixth form Philosophy, Politics and Economics taster course. In a bad-tempered exchange, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer Ed Balls once dubbed him, “a pound shop Ben Elton”; these days, however, it would perhaps be more apt to dub

22

him a pound shop Michel Foucault or Antonio Gramsci, given his penchant for dropping terms like ‘hegemony’, ‘power dynamics’ and ‘Sisyphean’ into the conversation. A little learning, as Alexander Pope famously observed, is a dangerous thing, which is possibly why many regard Brand in much the same way that they might a suicidal psychopath with explosive underwear. It is his love for the spotlight, however, which defines his revolutionary campaign. Appearing at a protest with members of Anonymous, Brand could not resist wearing his stylised Guy Fawkes

“A Halloween-haired, Sachsgate-enacting, estuary-whining, glitter-lacquered, priapic berk… How dare I, from my velvet chaise longue, in my Hollywood home like Kubla Khan, drag my limbs from my harem to moan about the system? A system that has posited me on a lilo made of thighs in an ocean filled with honey and foie gras’d my Essex arse with undue praise and money.”

mask on his head so that press photographers would be rewarded with some prime photo opportunities of the former stand-up comedian in his new job as showbiz anarchist-in-chief. However, Brand is certainly Man of the Moment in the UK as the country faces an election year. Many have described his exhortation to his fans not to vote as irresponsible and self-

defeating, although it does also bring to mind Billy Connolly’s much quoted witticism, “Don’t vote – it only encourages them!” There is no humour in Brand’s advice, though. His 2014 manifesto, Revolution, is clearly the work of a man who is desperate to be taken seriously as a leading thinker, even as he undercuts

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

his own arguments with flippancy and philosophical non-sequiturs. How long this flirtation with political gravitas will last is anyone’s guess but, given his boundless energy and lack of focus, it will probably not be long before the Essex Don Quixote finds another windmill to engage his attention.

OFF HOT RESS P THE

Wreckage by Emily Bleeker Lillian Linden is a liar. On the surface, she looks like the brave survivor of a plane crash, but she’s been lying to her family, her friends and the whole world since rescue helicopters scooped her and her fellow survivor, Dave Hall, off a deserted island in the South Pacific. Missing for almost two years, the castaways are thrust into the spotlight after their rescue, becoming media darlings overnight. But they can’t tell the real story - so they lie. The public is fascinated by the castaways’ saga, but Lillian and Dave must return to their lives and their spouses. Genevieve Randall - a hard-nosed journalist and host of a news programme - isn’t buying it. She suspects Lillian’s and Dave’s explanations about the other crash survivors aren’t true. And now, Genevieve’s determined to get the real story, no matter how many lives it destroys.

The Girl on the Train: A Novel by Paula Hawkins Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cosy suburban homes and stops at the signal that allows her daily to watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost. And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good? Compulsively readable, The Girl on the Train is an emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller and an electrifying debut.

24

In this intriguing tale of survival, secrets, and redemption, two everyday people thrown together by tragedy must finally face the truth even if it might tear them apart

The One That Got Away by Simon Wood Graduate students Zoë and Holli only mean to blow off some steam on their road trip to Las Vegas, but something goes terribly wrong on their way home and, the last time Zoë sees her, Holli is in the clutches of a sadistic killer. Zoë flees with her life, changed forever. A year later and still tortured with guilt, Zoë latches on to a police investigation where the crime eerily resembles her abduction. Along with a zealous detective, she retraces the steps of that fateful night in the desert, hoping that her memory will return and help them find justice for Holli. Her abductor - labelled the Tally Man by a fascinated media - lies in wait for Zoë. For him, she is not a survivor but simply the one that got away. With an unforgettable heroine, a chillingly disturbed psychopath and a story that moves at breakneck speed, The One That Got Away is thriller writer Simon Wood at his finest.

‘Let in the Sun’ – Take That The Undateables

A Cook Abroad

Looking for love can be tricky, but some find it harder than others. This series features a string of people who are considered undateable and follows their attempts to find love. From a stand up comedian with Tourette’s to a skateboarder with a facial disfigurement, enter the world of matchmaking and speed dating for those people who are a challenge to the imageobsessed society we live in.

In this colourful culinary travelogue, celebrity chefs including Tony Singh, Hairy Biker Dave Myers and Rick Stein travel around the world to try out different recipes. It is interesting to watch the ways in which locals in Egypt, Argentina and various other countries produce signature dishes packed with huge amounts of flavour from very modest ingredients. Take inspiration from the series and have a go at some of these in your own kitchen for something a little different.

Mr Selfridge The third series of the period drama that is based on the true-life story of American retail magnate Harry Gordon Selfridge is back on our screens. Kara Tointon features in the ITV production alongside her real life sister Hannah Tointon as the two elder Selfridge sisters. Lord Loxley also returns to cause havoc and upset, using Harry’s son-in-law, Russian aristocrat Serge Bolatoff, to cause conflict within the Selfridge household. This third series also turns its attention to the effects of the Great War, which plays out in one particularly dramatic storyline involving Henri Leclair who returns to London shell shocked from his experiences fighting in France. It has to be said, this definitely seems to be the darkest series of the show to date, but it makes for some unmissable TV.

26

Sometimes size doesn’t matter and that’s the case for the Take That men who are now a threesome but sound better than ever.

‘King’ – Years and Years

They featured on our 2015 Ones to Watch list back in January and now we are beginning to see what this electronic trio are made of with this new track.

‘Champagne Kisses’ – Jessie Ware The London songstress delivers yet again with this new song, which features her distinctive falsetto.

RULE BRITANNIA!

It’s that time of year again; the red carpet has been rolled out for music and movie royalty as some of the most prestigious award ceremonies take place around the globe. It has been almost a clean sweep for British stars, as UK-born actors and musicians win an astounding number of gongs.

Honouring the best British and international contributions to film:

Recognising outstanding achievement in the music industry

Stole the Show:

Stole the Show: Sam Smith

Eddie Redmayne

The 22 year-old Brit won no less than four Grammy Awards on the night, including Best Pop Album, Best Song of the Year for ‘Stay With Me’ and Best New Artist. Walking up to the podium for a fourth time, the stunned male vocalist gushed, “This is the best night of my life.”

The old Etonian has captured the hearts of men and women alike after his inspiring portrayal of Stephen Hawking in the recent film The Theory of Everything. The British 33-year old won Best Actor at the recent Baftas. Redmyane could not disguise his shock at winning the gong, beating fellow Brits (and big name actors) Benedict Cumberbatch and Ralph Fiennes.

Fashion Fail: She rarely gets it wrong but Bajan beauty Rihanna baffled onlookers as she turned up on the red carpet in this OTT frou-frou pink number from couture label Giambattista Valli. We did, however, like the minimal make up the singer paired with the dress, which showed off her glowing skin and natural beauty.

Scandal of the Night: It has become something of an awards tradition for Kayne West to hijack the podium and interrupt the acceptance speech of some bewildered music artist. This year, West rushed up to the stage whilst Beck was thanking fans for being honoured with the Album of the Year award. It was back in 2009 that the rapper caused uproar when he interrupted Taylor Swift’s 2009 Video Music Award speech. He has since tried to claim that the whole episode this time around was supposed to be a ‘joke’ and not intended to cause offence.

Fashion Fail: This duo both got it wrong for different reasons. ‘It’ girl Hofit Golan wore a bizarre shaped gown that showed way too much flesh whilst I’m a Celebrity... contestant Nadia Forde’s dress seemed to be one size too small and the large slit in the side made it look cheap.

Lady Gaga says ‘I Do!’

The singer, who well and truly owned the stage at the Annual Academy Awards last month, recently announced her engagement to boyfriend, Taylor Kinney! The couple has been dating since 2011 and chose Valentine’s Day to seal the deal. Gaga took to Instagram to announce the news to her followers; the singer wrote “He gave me his heart on Valentine’s Day and I said YES!” She was, of course, referring to the huge heartshaped sparkler that Kinney picked out for his new fiancée. The newly-engaged duo were spotted out celebrating at the singer’s family restaurant, Joanne Trattoria on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

Royal seal of approval

Prince William delighted the Chinese after recording a ‘Happy New Year’ message in Mandarin for Chinese television. The broadcast was viewed by millions of people, many of whom later took to social media to congratulate the Duke of Cambridge on his proficient language skills. William, who wed his university sweetheart Kate back in 2011, mentioned that he was looking forward to visiting the country later this year to launch the Great Festival of Creativity and mark the start of the Year of Cultural Exchange.

30

Girl Crush: Jessica Lowndes

The former 90210 star is looking fabulous in the photos she recently posted to her Instagram account. Lowndes, who has been following a gruelling fitness regime for the past year, posted enviable bikini clad images of herself while on holiday in Los Angeles. The 26-year old definitely deserves some down time after an intense year of work, including appearing alongside Bruce Willis in the film The Prince.

Fashion for Relief

Celebrities, including model of the moment Jordan Dunn, Daisy Lowe, Justin Bieber, Michelle Keegan and Pixie Lott came together for Naomi Campbell’s charity event Fashion for Relief at Somerset House last month. Many famous faces paraded the catwalk to raise funds for the Ebola crisis in Africa including Katie Price, who sported an uncharacteristically androgynous look. The mum of five totally embraced the new look, tweeting moments before she appeared on the runway, “Getting ready for the catwalk tonight @NaomiCampbell @Decappeal #FashionForRelief #LFW.” Many of the most exclusive fashion houses including Dolce & Gabbana, Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood, Balmain and Versace donated outfits to the show.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

with Cool Contours España It’s the treatment that all kinds of A-Listers are signing up for, but is fat-freezing just another health fad or does it really make a difference? Our resident beauty expert Liza Mayne tries it out for herself and shares her experience with SOCIETY Marbella readers.

S

pring is clearly here, which means summer is soon approaching - so if you haven’t started already, now is the perfect time to start creating those bikini bodies, ladies. So many of us promise ourselves every New Year that we want to start a healthy lifestyle and lose weight - I knew I wanted to be in the best shape of my life and this is my year to achieve just that. The idea of getting into shape is one thing, actually getting into shape quite another. There are certain areas of our body from which we just can’t shift the extra weight or stubborn body fat. Well, ladies the answer to all these problems is now here on the Costa del Sol, with Cool Contours España. Direct from the USA & UK, Cool Contours España is the latest non-invasive, fat-freezing FDA-approved treatment as used by celebrities. Lose up to 25 to 40 per cent of your stubborn body fat and cellulite permanently with state-of-the-art fat freezing technology; a painless and safe liposuction treatment in under an hour from qualified technicians. What is fat freezing? It is a non-invasive procedure that removes fat with no scalpel, no needle, no special diets and with no down-time from work or social activities. It’s the latest thing with the likes of Colleen Rooney, Britney Spears and Amy Willerton and is known to many as ‘Lunchtime Lipo’. It takes under an hour to have the procedure and you can walk straight back out and carry on with your day, with no pain or discomfort. Cool Contour España’s unique technology uses controlled cooling to

38

The procedure freeze and eliminate unwanted fat cells without surgery. The procedure is FDAapproved, completely safe and an effective way to reduce fat and contour your body. It is similar to liposuction without the surgery, reducing localised fat deposits to a low temperature where the fat cells slowly die over the course of several weeks and are naturally eliminated from your body. The results are lasting and undeniable. This procedure is great for those lumps and bumps that don’t respond to diets and exercise as quickly as other areas may. The procedure is done without effecting skin muscle, tissue or vital organs because fat cells freeze much more quickly. Results can be seen within an eight to 10 week period, but it is extremely important that you drink up to two litres of water a day to help flush the fat cells out through your lymphatic system.

I was greeted by the lovely Lisa and Sally of Cool Contours España, who explained the fascinating birth and development of Cryogenic Lipoysis, which is the medical term used for the procedure. It was then that I learned what the non-invasive fat-freezing process was going to entail and I was then required to answer a full medical questionnaire before getting started. By the time I got into the room I was totally relaxed, knowing I was in the safe hands of Cool Contour España. Firstly an icy cold membrane was applied to my tummy, which is used to protect the area and then the machine was applied. I felt the suction and a bit of cold, but after three to four minutes the area had been frozen and I felt nothing whilst lying there for the hour, no discomfort nor any pain. I sat talking to Lisa and didn’t even realise the time passing. It was amazing! I am really looking forward to seeing the results in the next two months and have already booked in for my second treatment with the girls.

O

ver the years I’ve met many people who acknowledge the benefits of eating natural, plant based cuisine and want to make a change in the way they eat, the way they live and the way they feel. But all of them have had one thing in common – not knowing where to start. How, for example, do you combine non-animal foods to get the most nutrients out of plant based eating? What are the failsafe recipes that you can knock out week after week without even really thinking? And what do you cook if you have a room full of friends to impress? I am here to help. Not only will I show you that this way of eating is easy, but that it is also quick, inexpensive and - above all - you will feel amazing! I can vouch for the incredible effects of plant based eating; it has taken me a while to get to this point, but turning my eating habits around has changed my life. I suffered years of stomach problems – ulcers before the age of 20, indigestion (I used to pop anti-acids like candy). Pain was part of my day-to-day life. I didn’t know what ‘good’ felt like. Four years ago I was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries and endometriosis. I was told that the likelihood of ever having children was next to none. My options were sold to me as either IVF or the contraceptive pill. I was working 12-14 hour days in food and beverage and had entered a vicious cycle of very unhealthy living. Over the years I had dabbled in a healthy lifestyle but I always seemed to swing back to bad habits, but

my diagnosis was a turning point. For the first time I knew I had to make changes and I was resolute about it.

the butterfly gently unfurls, I began to feel myself again, my better self, the self that knew what ‘good’ felt like.

The pretty butterfly tattoo you see on many of my food pictures represents change. The butterfly is a reminder to make changes when the opportunity arises. Change and transformation are inevitable for us all – and what I have learned is that it does not have to be traumatic. Spurred on by my diagnosis I quit my job and started researching how to turn my life around through nutrition. I began one gigantic experiment in the kitchen. It was fun - almost addictive and slowly, just as

My cooking is vegan, gluten and sugar free. I like to call it plant based because vegan can be seen as a discrete lifestyle (including what we wear, what we buy, how we holiday) and it is a word so beset with connotations that it can be immediately overwhelming for beginners. Plant based to me means

So, let’s begin. Start slowly. Don’t set yourself impossible goals 45

that 90 per cent of what I cook comes from vegetables and fruit and the rest from grains nuts and seeds. I give myself five per cent wriggle room where I allow myself to have dairy but never use or cook it at home (but a delicious cappuccino in a café in the sun in Italy with friends - bliss). Honey and bee pollen are in some of my recipes for health benefits but these will be clearly marked out in the recipe section for those of you who are strictly vegan. In terms of sourcing ingredients I try and think about two things. Buying them locally to encourage and support small scale farmers and organically to minimize pesticides and chemicals in my surroundings and food. This is now how

46

my family and I eat on a day-to-day basis. I say family - yes I have a daughter, Ayla, who has just turned two. My daughter is a big part of my story, a part of the new generation that will hopefully help us all make a shift in what we eat and how we treat our bodies. For her to learn the importance of food, where it comes from and how to prepare it, is my biggest wish and gift. I am not into branding something with a label, I wish for food to be personal thing and belong to the eater. Labels usually come with negative connotations and I want everyone to have access to my food without feeling they have to belong to a certain ‘type’. The food I cook is my

passion, it makes me happy and I hope it will make you happy too. So, let’s begin. Start slowly. Don’t set yourself impossible goals. If you eat just three plant-based meals a week you will start to feel the difference and once you’ve tasted the beginnings of transformation you will start to unfurl and take flight. Let’s join the butterflies. Let’s become one.

he bulk of the US aftermarket tuning industry is centred in Southern California, while the big players in US motorsport, traditionally IndyCar and NASCAR, and their support industries, are more often than not based on the other side of the country in North Carolina. A big difference between the specialist aftermarket companies in the US and Europe is the close relationship of the former to the aerospace industry, which often has excess capacity. This means easier access to state-of-the-art design and manufacturing processes for specialist components, not to mention strong and light materials not normally within the purview of car manufacturers. While the John F. Kennedy Space Centre (KSC) in Florida, where all manned launches take place, is one of the best known NASA facilities, all flight control for manned space missions is managed from the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Centre (JSC) in Houston, Texas. Hence the immortal line,”Houston, we have a problem!”

Just over an hour’s drive to the west of Houston is a small town called Sealy. Five miles from its centre, beside the main highway, is a small but hugely experienced company called Hennessey Performance that builds the fastest road car in the world. Texas is the second largest US state by size and population, so it is no surprise that Texans have big ideas and tend to do things in a big way! While the Bugatti Veyron is a product of VW’s massive design and engineering might, and seemingly endless amounts of money and resources, the Hennessey Venom GT is a distinctly old school answer to the familiar quest to build the world’s fastest road going super sports car. The penultimate Grand Sport Vitesse version dispenses the 1,200 horses generated by its 8.0-litre W16 motor through the dual-clutch transmission and permanent four-wheel-drive common to all Veyrons. But this complex machine also weights around 1,900kg, which is almost as much as an entry-level Mercedes S-Class.

The Venom GT takes the diametrically opposite engineering approach - for speed, add lightness. And power. Tipping the scales at 1,244 kg, it is lighter than the Bugatti by around three-quarters the weight of the Lotus Exige on which it is based. In the most powerful of its three states of tune, the Venom GT’s extensively modified 7.0-litre Corvette V8 motor with two massive turbochargers strapped to its back makes 1,244 hp, for a spectacular power-to-weight ratio of 1 hp/kg! Unlike its Bugatti counterpart, the Venom GT is rear-wheel-drive, and the Ricardo-built six-speed manual gearbox from the Ford GT means that you have to select gear ratios the oldfashioned way. As company founder, John Hennessey explained, “The rolling chassis is built at Hennessey’s facility near Silverstone, the seat of motorsport in England, and then flown to Texas where the car is assembled, tuned and tested.”

management to precisely meter fuel, ignition, boost and other parameters. This maximises power, torque, and driveability, not to mention emissions and fuel consumption, although the latter two are somewhat less of a priority in a car whose miniscule production numbers fall under the threshold required for type approval homologation.

To be frank, the 1,244hp is not really that far out in absolute terms. Aftermarket-tuned turbocharged Chevy V8 engines were making 1,000 hp a quarter of a Century ago. I even know of a 1,000hp small block Chevy built in 1988 by the legendary David Vizard, and installed in a first generation Maxda RX7! The difference today however, is the use of current electronic engine

While the centre tub of the Venom GT is Exige, the rest of the car around it is new, with a racecar-style composite/ aluminium hybrid space-frame off which the suspension and engine are hung. All the Hennessey body panels are fabricated from carbon-fibre, while the Lotus roof and doors are a composite material. The floorpan, cabin, dashboard, HVAC system, headlamps, windscreen and side glass are also Lotus components. The suspension uses unequal-length double wishbones at each corner with Penske 2-way adjustable dampers and adjustable front and rear anti-roll bars. This set-up allows a 2.4-inch range of ride height adjustment. The rack and pinion steering is electric with sixposition variable assistance.

The Venom GT takes the diametrically opposite engineering approach - for speed, add lightness. And power. 81

TORQUE TALK

The car hooks up straight away, allowing me to experience the undiluted violence of full thrust as the rev counter needle arcs towards the red line

The 44/56 percent front/rear weight distribution is typical of a mid-engined car and also gives the big rear tyres better traction off the line. Hennessey use their own H10 monoblock forged alloy wheels in 9.5J x 19-inch and 12.5J x 20-inch sizes, shod with 265/30ZR19 and 345/30ZR20 Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres. The massive brakes are from Brembo, and use 15-inch diameter (381 x 33 mm) vented carbon ceramic disc clamped by a six-pot caliper on each corner. Getting in and out of the Venom GT is a procedure that will be familiar to any Lotus Elise or Exige owner. That said, in this case the steering wheel is removable racecar style, useful for taller drivers who would otherwise find the process a real squeeze. Once you are comfortably ensconced in the lightweight race-style seat, it is apparent that the Venom GT’s ergonomics are hardly changed from the Lotus original. But the level of appointment is far higher, the Spartan cabin now beautifully trimmed with lashings of Alcantara, carbon-fibre and two-tone leather, some of it quilted. The compact cabin belies the fact that the Venom GT is longer and wider than the Exige. Once on the move, this certainly helps overcome any intimidation you might have corralled from the greater exterior dimensions, and you soon begin to relax in a car that feels very planted, changes direction instinctively, and instils great confidence while doing so.

82

Discounting the very latest supercharged V6-engined Exige, the Venom GT has twice the cylinder count and six times the horsepower of the four-cylinder Lotus on which it is loosely based. It also has nearly three times the horsepower of the base Corvette, whose engine it uses as a starting point. The 7.0-litre (427 cu in) big-block Chevy LSX motor is part of US Muscle Car folklore. This old school 90-degree V8 is as simple and robust as they come, with no fancy four-valvesper-cylinder heads or variable valve timing. No siree, what we have here is an old school iron block V8 topped by aluminium heads, two-valves-percylinder and hydraulic tappets. Apart from strengthening the bottom end with a fully-balanced Calls steel billet crank, connected to the JE forged pistons by Manley connecting rods, Hennessey add a dry sump lubrication system. Then they bolt on a pair of big ball-bearing Precision turbochargers boosting at 19 psi, a massive intercooler system, and sequential multi-port electronic fuel-injection. While 7.0 litres of displacement and a 9.2:1 compression ratio are enough to ensure decent off-boost torque and throttle response, the cars modest kerb weight certainly helps. The big numbers are 1,244 hp at 6,600 rpm, accompanied by 1,566 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm, but the driver adjustable control knob allows you to dial this down to 1,000 hp, or a mere 800 hp should it rain. The redline is set at 7,200rpm.

TORQUE TALK

One of the options on the upgrade short list is right-hand-drive, so the Venom GT can be sold in the countries where LHD cars cannot be registered. A couple of the other options that might be of interest to some owners are the bare carbon-fibre finish, Stefano Ricci bespoke interior, and an audio system designed by Stephen Tyler of Aerosmith! A more appropriate option for dyed-in-the-wool enthusiasts however, is the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup ZP tyres. Turn the ignition key and the explosion of sound that resonates through the cabin leaves you in no doubt that a big, bent crank V8 has just come to life behind your head. As in the Ford GT, each of the six forward gear ratios is easy to find with the aluminium ball-topped shifter. It’s throws may be quite long but its action is medium weighted and rifle-bolt precise. It makes a fine pairing with a race clutch whose action is quite short and on the heavy side of medium. As I pulled away for the first time, Ben Norrell, Hennessey’s Director of Operations, who accompanied me

on the test ride, mentioned that the short clutch engagement makes most people stall the car the first time. I am proud to say that I did not. It was quite apparent on the way down to Sealy in my rental car that the local Sheriff has quite a few deputies prowling the local highways looking for sources of revenue. Luckily, Hennessey’s spacious 37,000 ft facility is right next to the Lonestar Motorsport Park, so we were able to use the ¼-mile drag strip there for speed testing, and the perimeter roads to assess the cars ride and handling. Since the mechanicals had to be warmed up before the engine could be used in anger, chassis assessment was the first order of battle. The surface of the perimeter roads is far from perfect and this gave a good indication of the cars ride and composure. As you would expect of a car build to take 200mph+ speeds in its stride, the primary ride is taut and very well controlled. Importantly, you can feel that the secondary ride is set up to allow the suspension to breathe on short, sharp bumps, so the car is not thrown off line.

83

TORQUE TALK The electric power steering is truly something to write home about. A lot has been said about EPS in recent years, with some systems from the major manufacturers good, and others less so. Hennessey has done a remarkable job of calibrating theirs, and it is medium weighted and perfectly dialled in to the chassis turn-in rate. Thus the car steers fluidly and intuitively with the kind of seat of the pants connection to its chassis you need to instil confidence at speed. So much for the world-class supporting cast. While the suspension, steering and brakes are all brilliant in their own right, the real star of the show sits in the engine room. It is the automotive equivalent of NASA’s Saturn V booster rocket. Strapping two big turbos onto a big block V8 with a modest compression ratio and considerable inherent torque means that turbo lag is not an issue here. Move into the throttle travel from

84

a rolling start in second gear, and this relatively light car is already starting to fly when the turbos spool up to deliver their afterburner effect. The acceleration is sensational on full boost, and thanks to the variable traction control, wide rubber and the sticky surface of the drag strip, the car hooks up straight away, allowing me to experience the undiluted violence of full thrust as the rev counter needle arcs towards the red line. Into third, and the noise and fury continues unabated as this white carbon-fibre rocket lunges for the horizon. I am in fourth now, but we are also rapidly running out of room as the quarter-mile strip is almost consumed, and the open field beyond is approaching with alarming speed. Stability at speed is beyond question. Although the drag coefficient is an

unimpressive 0.44, the spoilers provide nearly 500kg of aerodynamic downforce at 250 km/h. Hard on the brakes now and the big numbers tumble on the speedometer face as the seatbelt strap digs into my shoulders. With less mass to deal with, a light car works well this way too when it comes to scrubbing off speed. We do this a number of times, completing a lap of the perimeter roads to get back to the Âź-mile straight each time. I soon feel quite at home in the Venom GT and revel in its analogue feel, which reminds me in some ways of the excellent Noble M600, but on steroids. I drove the Bugatti Veyron in late 2007, but the memory will always stay with me. It was a car that wowed me with its fantastic engineering and finish and impressed with its awesome acceleration and braking. It was also really civilised

TORQUE TALK and easy to drive. It is the perfect hypercar for a cross-continental trip in relative comfort. The Hennessey Venom GT will not do all these practical things as well as the Veyron, but it has a lot more real character, and connects with its driver at a visceral level that has more than just raw speed as its draw. It is a far more engaging steer that makes you pay full attention and work at driving it. Because of this, it also gives a lot more back in return, and at the end of a fast drive you feel that you are the equal partner in a real adventure. In comparison, the Bugatti is too good, too perfect, and leaves you feeling mightily impressed, but also detached and perhaps not smitten. The staggering Veyron-beating performance numbers that Hennessey

provided me with were verified by the Guinness Book of Records when the Venom GT made its record breaking speed run on 21st January 2013,. That day, it qualified it as the fastest production car from 0-300km/h (186mph) with a time of 13.63 sec. During that run, the GT also recorded a 0-200mph (322km/h) time of 14.51 sec, beating the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport by nearly 7.0 sec. For fans of the staple 0-60mph benchmark, that time is 2.7 sec, which is impressive for a RWD car. On February 14th 2014, the Venom GT was clocked at 270.49 mph (425.31 km/h) on the 3.22-mile long Space Shuttle landing strip at the Kennedy Space Centre, beating the 267.86 mph of the Veyron Super Sport. Apparently it took two years to get permission to use that runway!

However, this top speed was not official as it was only done one way, and the average of two runs in opposite directions is required for an official record. Furthermore, Hennessey had only built 16 of the 30 cars required for the Guinness Book of Records title of fastest production car, and Hennessey only planned to make 29 cars before moving on to their new and totally bespoke Venom F5. Named after a category of tornado, the Venom F5 will have an all-carbonfibre body with lower drag and greater downforce than the Venom GT. With 1,400 hp planned from its uprated engine, Hennessey are looking at a top speed of 290mph, with the production run of 30 cars scheduled to begin sometime in 2016. Soon after that we hope to hear the immortal words, “Houston, we have a new record!

KEEP IT REAL

Perfection ACHIEVED

A

fter much anticipation, longestablished Norwegian owned real estate specialists Spanord revealed that the company has rebranded and will now trade as Perfect Marbella. As part of this new brand an impressive new website featuring all the latest features has also been launched. Perfect Marbella (previously Spanord) was established in 1999 and soon became one of the largest Norwegian property companies in Spain. The company initially helped Scandinavian buyers but today their clientele is drawn from a much wider international audience, which needed to be reflected in their branding. The brand name Perfect Marbella was chosen

to give clients a better understanding of the company’s central message and their extensive knowledge of the property market in Marbella and the rest of the Coast. The website at perfectmarbella.com also reflects the company’s rounded approach, not only in providing professional property services but also legal advice, rentals, maintenance and construction services. The design and functionality of the site were painstakingly chosen to adhere to the company’s exacting standards and attention to detail, to showcase the wealth of properties available and provide an enjoyable user experience. Visitors are invited to click on the stunning aerial map of the Costa del Sol

coastline to select their chosen area, which then reveals a search facility for instant access to the desired properties. There are also some useful tips on the buying process, a comprehensive golf guide, area guide and a blog section. A delighted Knut Helge Nordbotn, founder and director of Perfect Marbella explains: “The new name clearly conveys our love of Marbella. We wanted to communicate our enthusiasm for the Marbella lifestyle and for helping clients realise their own Spanish properties dreams. We’re thrilled with the new website; it reflects our modern outlook, clearly lists our services and introduces the members of our friendly team who are on-hand throughout the entire buying process and beyond.”

50 shades of

light

Okay, so we know that Fifty Shades of Grey is not everyone’s cup of tea and it has not had the best of reviews - but everyone is talking about it! Perhaps I am a little biased, but I think it has as much to do with the stunning furnishings in the oh-so-seductive Christian’s apartment than it does with the acting roles and storyline.

VELLUM is the elegance of nature transformed by man’s hand. It comes from the ancient manuscripts, where messages were written in VELLUM, a fine and translucent material. VELLUM lighting brings to spaces the warm light of written stories passed through generations. Composed in hammered

brass, its elegance exhales the power of resistance through times as the written stories never dies. Every story you create in your space will be written by the warm lighting words of VELLUM - just enjoy all these golden memories.

Delightfull’s stunning illumination creations which are as much art as they are lights were used to backlight Mr Grey himself, complemented seamlessly by the use of feature pieces from leading furniture designers Koket, Brabbu and Boca do Lobo. Not only do these pieces help to set the scene but I often felt myself more attracted to Mr Grey’s great taste in furniture more than his good looks and seductive charm!

TURNER TABLE is simply a head turner. Inspired by Tina Turner’s dance moves it has an Art Deco shape with the possibility of rotating its arcs into the desired position, so that you can create your favourite composition at any time. The arcs are made in brass with a copper finish and the top cover is in aluminium, lacquered in glossy white.

The VIVRE sconce offers exquisite vintage details with a decidedly modern profile. The dark neutral tones and the exquisite patterns in the agate stone are uniquely captivating against the light and the gold metal which embraces the stone in perfect harmony and balance. Hand-selected agate slices with light shining through offer the perfect glow.

The CHLOE sconce: unexpected twists in the magically evocative ribbon awaken your deepest senses, giving you the impression of being wrapped in the impulsive charm of a little girl. Exquisite leaf detailing in gilded bronze, finished in gold.

With a mid-century vibe, this EVANS floor lamp is all about fulfilling customers’ needs: that’s why it is also easy to set up. Its strict form gives elegance and the glow of its components follow current trends. Evans has three diffusers, each one adjustable in direction. Its structure is handmade in brass and the lampshades in aluminium. All available at FOC Design: Av de Gustavo Adolfo Becquer, 16 Nueva Andalucía T. 952 817 129 info@wearefoc.com focdesign.es

aution! Foodie Alert! There is a new leadership team at Rincón de La Sala and after having travelled extensively around Spain, they have completely rewritten the menu, which is now available in the newly refurbished venue. A profound love for Spanish cuisine is reflected in the quality and variety of the dishes on the menu, which showcase the tastes and flavours of Spain that they have experienced along the way. All of the items on the new a la carte menu are traditional Spanish favourites, prepared and cooked with attention to the smallest detail. El Rincón’s Spanish customers have already given their seal of approval by describing the fabulous food as “just like Mama used to make” and you can’t improve on that! Some of the main courses that especially caught our eye were the delicious Baby Suckling Pig (Cochinillo), a tasty Beef Stew and the Lamb Chops. Can there be anything more delicious than lamb chops cooked by a Spanish chef? This is no ordinary Spanish chef either, having gained invaluable knowledge during the 25 years he

headed up the team at the 5 *Don Carlos Hotel, it is a pleasure to be able to enjoy the fruits of this labour and flavours that only extensive experience such as his can deliver. There is also a brand new tapas menu, featuring five to six dishes daily, which change according to the finest produce currently available. To accompany your food, why not try some of the wonderful wines, which have been selected to represent the best of Spanish producers? It cannot be denied that French wines are still the only game in town for some of the more seasoned wine aficionados and there is a selection to cater for this, but why look further afield when your own country produces internationally

renowned vintages? The wine list now features familiar favourites – as well as some newer creations – by established winemakers such as Muga, Vega Sicilia and Marques de Riscal.

la Sala also features new experienced staff members, minimally speaking two languages, most of whom are Spanish. Many of the staff can speak an impressive four to five languages, which is very helpful in such a cosmopolitan resort as Marbella.

There has been a change of layout and décor as well: the terrace, which was previously split into two sections has been united and the wooden flooring now runs throughout the terrace and the restaurant, creating a feeling of the outside being brought inside, which customers will especially enjoy on those rare days when sitting outside takes a little courage. The interior has been opened up, which has resulted in the new El Rincón seeming lighter, brighter and bigger than ever. Sit at the special booth table and watch your food being prepared by the chefs in the kitchen. Even more character has been added to the interior in the shape of wine barrels on which clients are invited to sit as they enjoy a relaxing drink after dinner. any people think of anchovies only in terms of salty little fish in tins. The Spanish know differently, and better. So differently, in fact, that the citizens of Málaga are nicknamed “Boquerones” on account of the enormous amount of these fish that they consume. And they do so advisedly, as they are a rich source of vitamin A, calcium, potassium and selenium.

Before eating them fresh, the anchovies were gutted and their heads removed. The fresh fish was fried, brined or steeped in vinegar, whilst the guts and innards were then covered with salt and left in the sun. As the mixture fermented, a clear liquid was given off which was carefully strained and preserved. This was known as Garum, or occasionally Liquamen (although by the 1st century AD they had become distinct).

When fresh, they are delicious deep fried, or baked with cheese. But having said that, it is undoubtedly the tinned or preserved variety that is best known to the world at large. (But, beware! In Sweden or Finland, having ordered anchovies, you might find yourself eating sprats!).

Some of the best garum came from Cartagena and Cádiz, and was shipped by Ibero-Roman merchants not only to Rome, but also to Gaul, Germania and Britannia. The stink of production ensured that the factories were sited outside the cities, but the product itself was highly prized, although the Cordoban Seneca thundered “Do you not realise that “garum sociorum”, that expensive bloody mass of decayed fish, consumes the stomach with its salted putrefaction?” He was, of course, referring to an inferior plebeian blend known as “allec”, made from the

The genuine anchovy has an ancient history, reaching back to Phoenician times, the founders of Málaga, who ate the fish both fresh and preserved in salt. Naturally, Greece and Rome followed suit, and under these civilisations not a morsel was left unused.

Padre Peter, cleric for wedding ceremonies and regular contributor to SOCIETYMagazine

thick residue left at the bottom of the container after the “garum nobile” had been skimmed off. He may also have been slightly worried by the practice of Roman legionaries who mixed allec with water before drinking it as “Hydrogarum”. Pliny felt that the dilution should resemble the colour of mead before it was drunk, although one imagines that it was slightly different in taste! The nearest modern equivalent to garum is Monosodium Glutamate, although the tradition continues in the production of such culinary items as Worcestershire Sauce and Gentleman’s Relish. And a dish of lamb is greatly enhanced by the cautious addition of tinned anchovies! These culinary delights are made from preserved rather than fresh anchovies. The canning process is extremely delicate, and has long been the preserve of women, who have a greater

COSTA CUISINE

delicacy of touch than the average male. The head and guts are removed, and the bodies preserved in brine under pressure for a few months, after which they are rinsed, and dried on cloths. The fish are then packed in the cloths, which are then placed in a centrifuge to extract the last drop of water.

Each fish is then split into two by hand, and the individual whole fillets are carefully placed in the tins, again by hand. Olive or sunflower oil is then

added and the tins of “anchoas” are then sealed. The fresh fillets may also be split, treated with olive oil, wine vinegar and herbs, and then layered, usually in glass or plastic, to produce the refreshing acidic “boquerones en vinagre”. In neither instance is sterilisation employed, as this would damage the delicate flesh of the fish. For this reason both products should be stored at between 4°C and 12°C, and consumed within six months to a year after production. However, when it comes to another little fish – sardines – many gourmets maintain

that the longer the fish is in the tin, the better it is, even beyond the “sell by” date! Just open the tin, drizzle over a little lemon, and consume! (This is also true of its larger cousin, the pilchard; both are members of the herring family, although more than twenty varieties of fish are known as “sardines” throughout the world. But come, we know what we mean!). It is, of course, even better simply to gut the fresh fish, remove the head, brush the body with olive oil and then grill it over an open wood fire. During the season this process can be readily observed along the length and breadth of the Costa del Sol’s beaches. This was the way that the Romans ate these fish, which they named after the island off whose coasts they were obtained - Sardinia. Nowadays “Cornish” sardines enjoy “Protected Geographical Status” under EU Regulations, although it is doubtful that they taste any different from their less protected cousins! They have, of course, been extensively painted by artists belonging to the “Newlyn School”, which perhaps

gives them ideas above their station.) The Romans thought highly of them as a food, although it is unlikely that they realised their immense nutritional value as a source of vitamin B2, B12, D, omega-3 fatty acids and iron, as well as those nutrients which we find in anchovies. The Greeks, on the other hand, despised sardines, which they believed to be poor creatures sacred to Hecate, goddess of the dead. It is true that they are at the bottom of the marine food chain, existing solely on plankton, but thus they escape those contaminants, such as mercury, which today poison so many other fish stocks. Napoleon Bonaparte realised the potential of the humble sardine as a cheap and nourishing source of food for the poor, and so instituted the first sardine canning factory. (He also ordered the development of margarine as a butter substitute for his troops!) In Spain, Cantabria remains the centre for high quality sardine canning, but the last large canning factory in the United States in Maine closed in 2010 after 135 years in operation. But they still eat them!

A for

I

t is fair to say that San Pedro de Alcántara has experienced a fairly turbulent decade. Firstly the construction of the much-needed multi-storey car park made much of the town virtually a no-go area and local businesses suffered, some closing down permanently. Then, once the car park was up and running and the streets were once again free from builders’ rubble and “No Entry” signs, work started on the long delayed tunnel that would divert traffic away from the town. This was great news for holidaymakers who wanted to

cut the duration of their journey from Málaga Airport to their holiday homes in Estepona and Sotogrande, not quite so helpful for the retailers of San Pedro, who would have to work harder to persuade punters to make a special journey to the town. Once the tunnel had opened and been received as generally a good thing the focus turned to giving poor, battered San Pedro a bit of a facelift – and what a facelift it has been! The transformation has been genuinely thrilling to see and the brand spanking new boulevard is a brilliant place to spend time with family (especially younger members), have a walk or even vegetate with a book in friendly and picturesque surroundings. Given the fact that the boulevard is such a great place to expend energy, it’s good to know that there is a first-rate family restaurant where you can stock up on some calories before making your way to the boulevard – or refuel on your way home. Since 1999, when he first took over the perennially popular Passion Café, Malcolm Spendlove has determined to make it the premier family restaurant on the Coast and has

112

spectacularly succeeded. Whereas some restaurants can be tricky places to take young children, Passion Café welcomes them and, with plentiful outdoor areas, you can even bring your dog. Another attractive aspect of this wonderful place is the fact that it is open seven days a week and that, while there is an excellent breakfast menu, you can order from the main menu at any time of day. We can recommend this as a great place to enjoy breakfast, since Passion make the best American style pancakes in the world, topped with fresh berries and bacon. This is one of many Passion Café experiences that you simply cannot afford to miss! When we visited San Pedro’s most popular meeting place recently we couldn’t help noticing that it was buzzing with activity. We had popped in for an early lunch, but there were still

COSTA CUISINE

tables full of people who had arrived for coffee dates with friends and were chatting over their umpteenth cup, plus those who favour Passion Café as the best place in town for informal business meetings. Obviously the wonderful pastries are also responsible for this popularity and staff are kept busy making a stunning array of breads, croissants, scones and the most amazing dessert gateaux, all of which are available to take away. As is usual when we visit Passion Café, it took us some time to decide what we wanted to order – opting for just one dish from the range of delicious options on offer meant that we had to man up and miss out on some truly mouthwatering dishes. In the end we chose a Smoked Salmon Bagel with Cream Cheese, Fresh Tomato and Lemon and the Crispy Duck Salad with Gorgonzola, Poached Pears, Caramelised Walnuts,

Spinach, Cucumber, Mixed Leaves and Spring Onions. Both threw a whole new light on old favourites: the former evoked the New York deli classic of bagel and lox, while the second was an inspired spin on classic crispy duck, that standard dish of every Chinese restaurant. The remaining members of the team selected Californian Wrap, which consisted of Chicken (there is also a Prawn option) with Cream Cheese, Avocado, Roast Peppers, Spinach and Red Onion and the Wok Beef Stir Fry with Fried Vegetables and Noodles. We finished our meal off with the Vanilla Cheesecake, which was picture perfect and totally delicious. Eating with the eyes is a concept that is taken very seriously at Passion Café, so prepare to be captivated by the colours on your plate and the attention to detail that is paid to every dish that leaves

the kitchen. Unfortunately we were far too hungry - or greedy - to spend too much time admiring the chefs’ artistry and all agreed that this venue’s success has been based on consistency of excellence. While the quality of some restaurants (we are far too diplomatic to name names!) tends to peak and then dip, Passion’s steady hand means that his huge army of loyal customers is happy to recommend this as Marbella’s most reliable restaurant. If you are already a Passion Café customer you won’t need to be told just how good it is and if you have yet to visit – well, what’s stopping you? You don’t need to make a special date in your diary, just drop in when you are next in San Pedro. A good time and great food are guaranteed.

A CRÈME DE LE CRÈME EXPERIENCE AT LE PETIT BISTRO Paris is most couples’ favourite city for a romantic weekend getaway but when the airfare and hotel come out just that little bit too pricey, Le Petit Bistro is a superb alternative. Located in the heart of Nueva Andalucia, next to the H10 Casino Hotel, this intimate corner restaurant is inviting and charming. The new rustic French menu, as you would expect, is packed with classic dishes such as Coq au Vin and the delectable dessert Crepe Suzette, which are served with famed French finesse. When tasted, the bistro’s dishes are full of rich flavours and signature palette combinations. The best part of Le Petit Bistro, however, is the new three-course menu, which offers a starter, main and dessert for just €15. This really is

quite a steal and you are unlikely to find a similar offer in any restaurant of a similarly high standard along the Coast. Finally, no French restaurant would be complete without an impressive wine list and at Le Petit Bistro the wines available have been selected to suit each and every dish on the menu, as well as any budget. For a romantic evening for two, or that occasion when you are looking for

something a little special that won’t break the bank, head to Le Petit Bistro and ‘mangez bien’. lepetitbistromarbella.com

A WORLD OF BUSINESS UNDER ONE ROOF: WORLD TRADE CENTER GIBRALTAR As the rest of Europe struggled to recover from the financial collapse of 2008, visitors to Gibraltar would have been forgiven for thinking that this small but perfectly formed British enclave had somehow received an economic ‘get out of jail free’ card. The truth is that Gibraltar has always been an excellent place to do business, so it is not surprising that it will soon contain its own World Trade Center. Due for completion early in 2016, the first part of this ambitious project has already been finished and more than 65 per cent of the office space already purchased. When occupied it is anticipated that this building will house more than 1,700 workers. This is a remarkable achievement in these days of continuing economic cutbacks, but then it is only natural that Gibraltar should have its own WTC, in the footsteps of New York, London, Moscow, Dubai, Osaka, Seoul and Melbourne. It might lack the size of London, the population of Osaka and Melbourne and the power and influence of Moscow, but nonetheless enjoys an international reputation as one of Europe’s prime business capitals.

Miguel and, of course, this means that Gib’s international airport is also just around the corner. Each of the units on sale is built to the highest specification, including Category A finishes with flexible design, raised floors and suspended ceilings, pre-installed air conditioning units, superb security and lightning fast internet connectivity. As a further inducement, Gibraltar’s WTC will be the only building in town to allow everyone direct access to the EuropeIndia gateway.

The World Trade Center brand has a sterling reputation for attracting some of the most powerful multinationals in the world, with companies such as Shell, Lloyds Banking Group, Apple and Vodafone maintaining offices in these buildings internationally and Gibraltar has shown that it has the infrastructure and the skilled workforce to enable businesses to take advantage of the territory’s unique location. The new WTC is situated only a minute from Ocean Village, which is good news for stressed executives who don’t want to be too far from their apartment or post-work bottle of San

The Gibraltar team, headed by Pete Burgess, Head of Sales & Marketing, recently attended the 2015 WTC meeting, which was held in Istanbul and were able to spend some valuable time with counterparts from World Trade Centers around the world. A common experience has been that WTCs tend to attract international business leaders, who are then able to sample what the area has to offer. Gibraltar’s history of attracting the top corporations means that even more multinationals will be flocking to this attractive, unique and seemingly recession-proof part of Southern Europe. worldtradecenter.gi

OCEAN CLINIC MARBELLA

THE FACE

OF THE FUTURE

I

t already has a worldwide reputation for excellence and now Marbella’s Ocean Clinic is looking to the future via an ambitious expansion. This, combined with the array of procedures available at Ocean Clinic, five-star accommodation and the superb micro-climate that makes Marbella the perfect place for post-surgical recuperation, means that it is one of the finest cosmetic surgery providers in Europe. We spoke to the clinic’s Medical Director, Dr. Kai Kaye, who explained some of the changes that will allow Ocean Clinic to offer clients an even better service. “The clinic has been extended by more than 240 square metres. A whole new floor is dedicated to five new patient suites, all of which will measure between 17 and 20 square metres,” he confirms. “We wanted to concentrate on our patients’ comfort and convenience, so all of these will include multi-language satellite TV and en-suite bathrooms.” This new floor means that additional space has been created on the second floor, as all patient suites will now be housed on the third level: “This will now contain two additional doctors’ offices and a room for radio frequency treatment and massage,” explains Dr. Kaye.

Another exciting new facility is the meeting room from which students on the science and teaching courses will be able to follow HD transmissions from the operating room. The Ocean Clinic now consists of nearly 600 square metres of floor space, making it the largest independent cosmetic surgery clinic on the Coast. “In order to ensure that our patients obtain maximum benefit from all these changes and improvements we have taken on more staff,” said Dr. Kaye. “We are delighted to welcome Dr. Maria Eugenia Aranda, who will be on our Aesthetic Medicine team offering treatments such as Botox and Fillers and Dr. Phillipp Gonser from Germany joined us as Surgical Resident in January. We are also able to call on the expertise of Dr. Michel Saiveau from France, who will visit us every month for select consultations and operations.”

Increased space and more staff will certainly ensure that Ocean Clinic continues to be one of the Coast’s major success stories. oceanclinic.net
