Are you all ready for May?
hings are heating up here at Society Magazine – not only have we all managed to get back in the pool (a sure sign that summer is approaching because, to misquote the famous movie, we like it hot!) but we have been run off our feet with all the great openings that have happened over April. This time next month we will be making preparations for the arrival of summer, so we’re trying – very hard – to think of this time as the calm before the storm. We have featured dozens of celebrities on the cover of Society over the years, but even the less computer literate among us have to acknowledge that the comparatively recent arrival of the internet has changed the nature of fame. This month’s cover girl, Roxy Horner, represents a new breed of superstar; an Instagram hit of seismic proportions, Roxy is a British model who has cleverly used social media to bolster her public profile. Maybe you don’t think of yourself as cover girl or handsome hunk material but the good news is that anyone can be an Instagram superstar – and it’s lucrative. Go straight to page 21 for our guide on becoming the next Instagram sensation; all you need is a catchy moniker, a theme, enough dedication to post regular updates and 1,000 followers. Instagram isn’t hard work and you could earn serious money, as members like Roxy have discovered. We’re all frantically practising our photographic skills here in preparation for world domination. May is the time that most women think about planning their wardrobe for the months ahead, so we’re lucky that this month our cover star, Roxy, is also modelling the latest range of Virginia Macari swimwear, which will be available via outlets in the Coast’s leading boutiques and hotels. This month we welcome our new fitness guru, Matt Roberts to the team. Matt enjoys a very high profile in the UK, deservedly so since he has been called upon to demonstrate his expertise on BBC Radio 2, Sky News and BBC Breakfast.
In addition he has been responsible for keeping a number of celebrities, including Amanda Holden, Tom Ford and The Saturdays in peak condition. If you’ve been inspired by Eddie Izzard’s recent ‘27 marathons in 27 days’ feat and are thinking of taking up running, then don’t even get up off the settee without reading this month’s column. Last month Dr. Kai Kaye and a team from Marbella’s Ocean Clinic travelled to Kenya on a mission to improve the lives of some of the country’s most impoverished citizens. Cosmetic surgery is often dismissed as a luxury for the wealthy and those in the public eye, but in its most basic aspect it has the power to change lives for the better. This was a Marbella project in the purest sense, since it combined the expertise of the Ocean Clinic staff with funds raised from local businesses (including Society Magazine) and patients of the Ocean Clinic. Let’s face it, all of us can benefit from some good advice about how to keep our relationships going strong, so we are very lucky to have Tanya Vegar on board. This month she is handing out some invaluable tips on how to keep the spark alive when you’ve been together for ages and perhaps have been too busy or preoccupied to pay enough attention to your other half. Apart from all of this we can offer you some great fashion ideas that should get you ready to head to the beach or the pool this summer, Padre Peter’s fascinating account of the history of the Guardia Civil and our resident sommelier, Julio’s take on Meursault and how this French region provides the perfect accompaniment to that classic dish, Lobster Thermidor. On top of this, Ian Kuah test drives the brand new, home-grown GTA Spano. Residents of Madrid, Barcelona - and yes, probably Marbella too – will be able to look forward to seeing this gorgeous new sports car whizzing round the streets very soon. Til next time... Andy Clark

INSTAFAMOUS? British model Roxy Horner is one of the growing band of Instagram celebrities…but you too could become Instafamous! Social media is going through a radical shift in 2016, at least in terms of its ‘fame and fortune’ potential. Facebook may still be the frontrunner in the channels you can choose from, but it is not the best place now to become a star or create a new income stream - Instagram is though. This image-led mobile app started with founder Kevin Systrom posting an image of his dog, and whilst pets remain forefront in popularity on the site, a number of humans have discovered they too can create a mass audience of eager fans.
By Olivia Park
THE RISE OF ROXY HORNER Society’s cover star, Roxy Horner, has taken the journey from star model to Instagram celebrity with some style.
Now the stunning model is the campaign ‘face’ of the brand new salon Bardou, which recently opened in Marbella and is rapidly becoming the ‘go to’ place for glamorous looks. Roxy is a British model who hit the headlines when she appeared in the papers on the arm of TOWIE star Joey Essex. Her stunning looks and Joey’s “Reemness’, plus a well-publicised break-up just before Joey entered the jungle that is “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here,” ensured continued media interest.
Not that Roxy has ever relied on Joey Essex for limelight appearances. She dated R&B star Taio Cruz back in 2011 and her successful modelling career has seen her as a guest of Bradley Cooper and Siena Miller at Hollywood red carpet events. Then she met Leonardo DiCaprio and the rumour mill went into overdrive, especially when Leo flew into London for the 2016 BAFTAs and was spotted at the trendy Chiltern Firehouse with Roxy. Whilst the award-winning actor has not featured on Roxy’s Instagram account, her photos have bagged her almost 70,000 followers and it’s not hard to see why a brand would want this beauty to promote their products. A quick browse of her account shows her wearing an Original Grain watch and publicising the work of a raft of photographers, make up artists and models she works with. Whilst, 70,000 may not quite match Cara Delevingne’s 28.1 million fans or Selena Gomez’s 69.5 million followers, Roxy is still in the numbers game for Instagram fame…and money.

ALL YOU NEED IS 1,000 FOLLOWERS Takumi, one of the growing number of agencies that matches Instagram accounts with brands and sponsorship deals, claims that even accounts with 1,000 followers could earn €50 per post. If you have more than 10,000 followers your annual earning potential is in the range of €20,000. A report in British tabloid The Mirror suggests that of the 14 million Brits posting on Instagram, one in ten could earn around €5000 per annum from their pics. That’s not to be sneezed at! Small wonder that a site that generates so much money for its user, cost its owners a substantial sum when founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger sold it in 2012 to Facebook.
A $1BILLION BUSINESS
In April 2012, Mark Zuckerberg’s giant of a company paid a cool $1billion for what then was perceived as a business with “no revenue but lots of soul.” If you’re wondering why it splashed that much cash on a mobile app then the evergrowing appeal of Instagram in 2016 is the answer. There’s no doubt that Zuckerberg and Co showed great foresight and business acumen in making the purchase four year’s ago. Also, as many social media experts agree, Facebook is getting tired and wrinkly, and its users are increasingly from an older demographic. Instagram on the other hand has a hip

and has a youthful band of followers aged 18 - 29 who love all the cool filters they can use on their photos. Most importantly, from a business perspective, Instagram organises its data in a far more efficient way than Facebook, so that ski resorts can find the members who are avid skiers, the food brands can hook up with the foodies and this is where the creation of a money-spinning Instagram account has its origins.
By now, you’re probably thinking that you might like to have a shot at generating an income via Instagram. So, here’s a quick rundown of what you need to do to start.
01.
05.
02. 03.
06. 07.
Set up an Instagram account (obviously!) but think carefully about the name in advance. A name that is catchy and easy to remember is paramount. Create a well-designed profile photo of yourself – not an object. Choose a theme for your page so followers know what you’re going to capture on camera. Random photos of anything that catches your attention are less likely to be successful than a page that focuses on a theme such as sport, food or fashion.
04.
70,9k followers
Practise taking photos and using all the Instagram filters. Learn the app inside out so that you can manipulate your images for maximum impact.
Add a photo editing app to your toolbox - Snapseed or PicSay/PicsPlay Pro are the favourites.
Take hundreds of photos and play around with them. Practise makes perfect.
Add informative or humorous captions to your images that will be easily understood.
08.
Tell a story with your images and, if possible, develop a niche market by observing the images that get the best responses. Post more images like this and you have a better chance of becoming an Instagram influencer.
09.
Interact constantly with others on Instagram by following and commenting
on other users’ posts. It takes time and energy to become Instagram famous – it’s a career if you make it one.
10.
Track how you’re doing with yet another app such as Statigram and other tools available on Instagram. Plus, don’t forget to hashtag everything you post. If you use the most popular hashtags on the site, you’ll attract attention faster and if you want to get the attention of a celebrity or business, tag them in the post, or use the Takumi, Snapfluence or InstaBrand apps to connect with brands directly when you have 1,000+ followers. And finally, follow @roxyhorner on Instagram to watch how it’s done, then start snapping your way to being Instafamous.

arbella is no stranger to providing the world’s wealthy with a playground to party in. So it is unsurprising that The Rich List, one of the world’s most sought after lifestyle concierge companies, is based here. Headed up by Bally Singh, who has a first class degree in nightlife entertainment and a contacts list that includes Sting, Jamiroquai and Kim Kardashian, the Rich List brand provides a service to anyone who wants to have a good time – in fact, a really ‘out of this world’ time! Imagine this: you and a group of friends want to hit one of the world’s hot party spots in style. You would like a private villa and maybe a private jet to get you there. You also want some fancy wheels

may also want some personal security for when you go out, and at your holiday residence. You also want to go to the best club nights and have a VIP table, but you certainly don’t want to stand outside in a queue to be scrutinised by the doorman. Instead, when you book The Rich List to organise a night out at a club for you, you’ll be walked through to your table by Rich List team members. In fact, visitors and residents of Marbella, The Rich List is hosting parties at Pangea on the following Fridays during the summer season: 27 May, 3 June, 24 June, 29 July and 26 August. It would be best if you booked now! So, it’s simple. If you want all this and you don’t want to search for the villa, the jet and everything else on your dream list then all you have to do is call The Rich List and the team will sort it all out for you. Whilst the brand may be best known for hosting events in Marbella, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, it can also rightly claim to have made its mark at other glamorous destinations. It has organised a VIP event at Cannes Film Festival for Harvey Weinstein, and electrified St. Tropez, St Bart’s and St Moritz as well as Monaco, Miami and many other points in between with unforgettable parties. Wherever you want to have fun, the Rich List gets it done, and with style.
The company has also acquired some sumptuous beachfront villas in the Marbella area to
provide affluent pleasure seekers with the perfect place to kick back when they’re not out at the beach clubs or enjoying the nightlife. Plus, the

The Rich List at F1 Abu Dhabi When the season has finished in Marbella, you can follow the sun and The Rich List to Abu Dhabi where the F1 Grand Prix is the biggest and most extravagant event of the racing year. The Yas Marina circuit is built to maximise the view and if you go with The Rich List, you can watch the race from dry land on the exclusive champagne terrace positioned on a bridge across the track - and there’s no other race track in the world that can boast of such a perfect viewing spot. Or, you may prefer to watch from the decks of a three-level exclusive yacht in the marina. Either will give you an unrivalled view and unlike other F1 races, you’ll actually be able to see the cars race around the entire track, rather than catch a quick glimpse as they whizz by on every lap. The Rich List is the only luxury event organiser to have access to this prime spot at the Abu Dhabi F1. Such is the respect for the brand that Rich List CEO Bally Singh is the only person who has been permitted to bring a car on to the track – and in Rich List style he arrived in the Batmobile.
To maximise the F1 experience, The Rich List partners with The Luxury Network, which is the
world’s leading marketing group for
luxury brands such as Mont Blanc and Ace of Spades champagne, which is particularly popular with celebrities from Jay-Z to Don Johnson. Jewellers and watchmakers, Tiffany and Weekes & Sons are also amongst the sponsorship partners who understand the value of The Rich List brand, as is Lamborghini – a marque that always gives a thrill on four wheels. If you’d like to rub shoulders with Kevin Hart, Ludacris, Big Sean, Tyrese Gibson, Usher, Trey Songz or Lewis Hamilton plus a posse of wealthy partygoers at the greatest F1 race of the season, then you’ve got to go with The Rich List. You can find them on Facebook and all the social media channels, plus The Rich List video channel on Youtube will give you an even better peek behind the scenes of what it’s like to be part of what the team call ‘#richlistfamily’. And it’s appropriate, because once you start booking with the company, you’ll be treated like you are family. The Abu Dhabi F1 this year is on 25th – 27th November, so Marbellís, you should think about booking with the Rich List now and enjoy the pleasure of a weekend away that, like everything else The Rich List offers, is out of this world.

This is a brilliantly realised novel about life during WWII, both in the air raids of London and on the front- line in Europe. When war is declared, Mary North leaves finishing school unfinished, goes straight to the War Office, and signs up. Tom Shaw decides to give it a miss - until his flatmate Alistair unexpectedly enlists and the conflict can no longer be avoided. Young, bright and brave, Mary is certain she’d be a marvellous spy. When she is - bewilderingly - made a teacher, she instead finds herself defying prejudice to protect the children her country would rather forget. Tom, meanwhile, finds that he will do anything for Mary.

Alice Through the Looking Glass Director: James Bobin. Starring: Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Rhys Ifans. After the success of Tim Burton’s groundbreaking version of Alice in Wonderland it was inevitable that the same creative team would grab Lewis Carroll’s sequel by the scruff of the neck and give it a good shake. Alice Through the Looking Glass sees Alice returning to Underland to save her friends from Time. Burton has vacated the director’s chair in favour of James Bobin this time, but expect the same high standard of visual trickery. X Men: Apocalypse Director: Bryan Singer. Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Oscar Isaac.
And when Mary and Alistair meet, it is love, as well as war, that will test them in ways they could not have imagined, entangling three lives in violence and passion, friendship and deception, inexorably shaping their hopes and dreams.
Angry Birds Directors: Clay Kaytis, Fergal Reilly. Starring: Jason Sudeikis, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph.
In a powerful combination of both humour and heartbreak, this dazzling novel weaves little-known history, and a perfect love story, into the vast sweep of the Second World War - daring us to understand that, against the great theatre of world events, it is the intimate losses, the small battles, the daily human triumphs that change us most.

THE
Only three years old and Beachgrooves FM is turning Marbella and beyond onto Deep House By Eleanor McKenzie
M
arc van Meeuwen is a passionate perfectionist. The radio station Beachgrooves that he launched three years ago this May is fast becoming the most listened to on the Costa del Sol from Málaga to Sotogrande and into Gibraltar. But the reach of Beachgrooves hasn’t stopped there and the inland areas of Antequera, Granada and Sevilla are also into the Deep House groove. Now, the company is launching in Ibiza, the natural home of every genre of House music. It’s an exciting new venture for Marc and the Beachgrooves team, so Society magazine was delighted to have the opportunity to interview the man who is dazzling the airwaves in Spain’s most desirable hot spots.
Have you always loved music? I’ve always been into music, it’s a major passion! I started my first radio station when I was 13 years old and then we bought a radio station when I was 16 and I worked on that until I was 21. From that point I started working with my father and did that for 25 years learning all about domotics and everything to do with lighting and controlling the home environment at the touch of a button. That’s a service that EZ Home Solutions offers still from the showroom here in the poligono in San Pedro de Alcántara.
What was your early radio station like? I played the hits of that era. It’s more than 30 years ago and nobody was so specialised back then. Some stations had evening programmes dedicated to a genre, but generally I stuck to playing hits.
30
It’s incredible how fast the Beachgrooves audience has grown. What was originally a hobby has just exploded to the point where we now have at least six people devoted to working on Beachgrooves. Somebody told me that it would never be a success, but how many people’s ‘hobby’ employs a half dozen people!
What is the audience demographic like?
How did you get from domotics to Beachgrooves? Just over three years ago I decided that I wanted to get back into my hobby of music. I had some time – and the hobby became a business very quickly. I saw that on the Costa del Sol, the radio stations were playing all kinds of music rather than focusing on one genre. It made sense to me to have a radio station that just played one type of music. If you look at radio in the USA, over the last10 years specialised radio stations for jazz, country, soul, R&B etc have proved to be immensely popular. When people know what type of music they want to listen to, then a dedicated station is where they are more likely to tune in. That’s where my idea came from. And I can say it has been a really successful choice.
According to our statistics the people who listen to Beachgrooves are typically aged 30-60, they have travelled a lot and are aware of the scene in cities like Miami. They are also the people who know all the beach clubs, such as Nikki Beach and Ocean Club. We also know from the car wash companies on the coast that around 90% of the cars that come in are tuned to Beachgrooves. I trust their ‘stats’ more than the official FM ones that are based on a sample of 20 people!
Are people listening outside southern Spain? Internet radio has really changed the whole scene – 300 people per hour are listening to Beachgrooves from Russia, the USA, South America and other countries.
How do they find Beachgrooves? They find us through Facebook. Social media is a very important element in people finding us. Plus, it’s the best easy listening station – and by that I mean Beachgrooves is the easiest station to find, however you listen to it. And, you
The Entertainment Charts
won’t get the annoying crackle and loss of signal that you find with so many other stations.
Why Deep House? Well, I love this music and Roger Sanchez is probably my favourite DJ in this genre. Plus, this style of music really fits the Marbella summer vibe, just like the House genres and Balearic beats that came out of Ibiza are perfect for there. Some people seemed to think that Deep House wouldn’t fit the Marbella scene, but we’ve proved that it actually fits it very, very well.
And now you’re launching in Ibiza! Yes, this is really exciting for us. We’re organising ‘Welcome to Beachgrooves’ parties on Ibiza on the 25th and 26th May, which is when all the big clubs on Ibiza hold their opening parties - Ushuaia, Pacha and Space for example. So it’s going to be a great occasion for Beachgrooves!
Where can we find you on Ibiza? We’re launching at Santos Ibiza Coast Suites, which is on the famous Playa d’en Bossa. It’s a fabulous ultra contemporary hotel and a very innovative concept, which captures the relaxed Mediterranean vibe and boho chic style that everyone goes to Ibiza for. It matches the Beachgrooves brand perfectly.
We’re organising ‘Welcome to Beachgrooves’ parties on Ibiza on the 25th and 26th of May
How do you find your DJs?
You also have a magazine and an online shop?
I started off by contacting DJs from all parts of the world, many of them were people I’d personally kept in touch with over the years. Then, we started to receive lots of sets from DJs that were perfect for playing on the FM radio side of Beachgrooves, but I also need local DJs for live events. So I started looking around the Costa del Sol and once the Beachgrooves name became well known, the DJs just came automatically.
I wanted to create a community around Beachgrooves. Through the magazine, listeners can find out more about the DJs and put a face to a name. With the shop - well, we’re just beginning with merchandising and so far we’ve got T-shirts, caps, phone covers and the Bass Egg speaker, but we’ll develop it more in the future.
And a Whatsapp community? Yes, people can send Whatsapp requests to the studio and you can see them on the screen if you’re listening online, and they also appear on our social media. So, if you want to post a ‘shout out’ to friends or family, you can do it!
How does Beachgrooves communicate with a multilingual audience? It’s not a station that is about talking. The DJs are allowed to introduce their show and speak at set intervals, so the broadcast always focuses on the music – and that goes way beyond language. Also, I encourage DJs to speak in their native language, so it’s a multilingual station that appeals to everyone. You’re part of some very popular live events – how did that come about? Marbella is attracting more of a younger crowd and so the businesses that are relevant to them are coming to the coast as well. They want to advertise to them and we offer the best targeted advertising to reach that demographic. Our live events really help our advertisers, including the venues that we appear at regularly, such as Besaya Beach. We stream live to the studio from there, and plan to do the same from Ibiza. Plus, we’re just starting to stream live from Olivia Valere every Saturday from 2am – 6am. Marc has more plans to develop Beachgrooves up his sleeve and it seems pretty certain that as a brand ambassador for Marbella, it’s going to have even bigger audiences around the world turning on to the music of the Deep House beat. marbellahealthstyle Kimberley Mills Bentley Fitness · Body · Lifestyle · Health · Soul · Style · Mind & the true Beauty of this little vibrant town It’s been another busy month here on the Coast and things are about to get even crazier, with summer being just around the corner! It’s the calm before the storm, as most people who live here know that when the days become longer, the holidaymakers flood to the area for some well deserved fun and summer really feels in full flow. I love being able to catch a few more hours on the beach with the kids and my friends after the school run. Being out in the fresh air really makes me appreciate living in such a beautiful place.
1.Bardou
Last month I was lucky enough to visit Bardou, the brand new, hottest salon on the Coast. Located in the port, it opened recently after much anticipation and is owned by the lovely Adee Phelan and Natalie Richardson. They were present in the salon and busy chatting to clients, which was really refreshing and great to see. I was firstly taken back by the beautifully designed interior of the salon - very glamorous and chic - but the friendliness of the staff is what really made me feel at ease. It has so much to offer from all aspects of hair cutting, colouring, blow-drying to facials, nails and eyebrows. I’m not really one to pamper myself in spas or salons, being more of a DIY girl, so this was a real treat. The staff made me feel welcome and relaxed and I had a lovely day there, enjoying a facial and a colour and blow-dry and, I must say, it was one of the best facials I have ever had. It was a microdermabrasion facial with oxygen therapy, which made my skin feel clean and rejuvenated and gave it a lovely glow, The oxygen facial has become really popular with many celebrities recently, as it is known to help the appearance of the skin and create a more radiant look, while also helping the circulation and complexion. Bardou is one of the only al o n salons here in Bardou S Marbella to offer this exclusive treatment. Then I had my hair coloured and styled; a new colouring treatment called Olaplex was used, which is meant to help with the effects of damage to coloured hair. Living in the sun it is always a struggle to keep my hair in a good condition and, as I’m a bit of a beach bunny, the salt and sea air really dry my hair out so it was helpful to have a conditioning treatment to help reverse these effects. If you fancy a day out with the girls or just a day to yourself, I would recommend a little trip down to Bardou. You will come out feeling relaxed, refreshed and renewed.

2. Málaga
When we lived in the UK we were quite close to London and I always enjoyed days out in the city with all its hustle and bustle, so I was totally surprised when we spent a weekend in Málaga, our closest city here on the Coast. Only 45 minutes from our house we found ourselves in the coolest, prettiest city I have visited in quite a while. Many people just think of Málaga as being the home of the international airport, but if you venture into its heart you will be surprised by how much is on offer and how much there is to see and do. It is full of amazing restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, museums, art galleries and the architecture is truly stunning. One of its other pluses is that it also has a fantastic beach, so you get the best of both worlds. The brand new port has just been completed and you can visit the daily market, which features stalls selling handmade items made locally. Of course, Málaga is probably most famous as the birth place of Pablo Picasso, so be sure to visit the Picasso Museum, which has workshops for the little ones; I alMalaga ways think it’s good to involve the children in local history. However, I have to say that my favourite part of being in the city was just taking in the atmosphere. It has such a specific vibe, very laid back but still buzzing, so if you’re looking for a bit of culture for the day do think about taking a trip to Málaga. Buses depart from Marbella frequently throughout the day and the fare only costs approximately eight euros.

3. Vino
I love to have a glass of wine now and again, so this month I am very excited to be visiting the local vineyard in Monda. I have always fancied a day out at an authentic vineyard so I was thrilled to find out that one the best vineyards in Spain is just around the corner. You can spend the day touring the beautiful vineyard and winery while sampling the different wines on offer. You can also learn about the history of wine making, from viticulture to how the grapes are harvested. I just hope there is no grape stomping involved or I’ll have to get a pedicure!
4. Health Studies H2O
I have read a lot of reports recently about the effects of using plastic bottles, containers and cling film in the storage of water and food and the results have been surprising. I always keep a big bottle of water in my car but after reading the recent studies I have decided to change to a glass container. Not many people may know that as the days grow hotter, the plastic heats and releases chemicals into the water. These chemicals have the potential to be extremely damaging to the body. Wrapping or cooking your food in plastic containers can also have similar consequences. This is quite worrying, as I know many people also leave plastic bottles of water in the car, especially during the warmer months. To be on the safe side, store your water in a glass bottle, or one which contains no BPA.
5. Birthday Trip
I celebrated my 30th birthday in March and was lucky enough to be whisked off by my partner and kids to Madrid for a few days. Leading a busy life here in Spain, it was lovely to have a few days in the city, spending some family time together. We jumped on the train in Málaga and two hours later we were in the centre of Madrid! We stayed in a beautiful hotel called the Petit Palace, which had the prettiest, most romantic restaurant I think I have ever seen, built in the hotel’s wine cellar. We also took a trip to the Warner Brothers theme park which was like being in a Looney Toons cartoon and the kids loved it. None of us can wait to return.

6. Safe Tanning
Everyone loves to have a bit of a tan, it just makes you feel and look better, but with the weather heating up and having a health scare last year courtesy of a mole which had slightly changed colour, I think it’s really important to remember to use sunscreen. It’s lovely when the days are warmer and you can spend more time at the beach or around the pool, but with the stronger rays comes the worry of overdoing the sun and causing long lasting damage to your skin. My mum always used to tell me to look after my skin and when I was younger I would think, “Yeah, yeah, yeah!” but now, as I’m getting older, I think it is vital to smother on the factor 50 and this is even more true for youngsters. Skin cancers are a worry to everyone so the best way to make sure you stay protected is to keep applying that sunscreen. TAN, TAN, There are some TAN! great creams on the market nowadays that also smell good and - let’s be honest - orange perma-tan is not a good look.
7. Flamenco
Living in Spain and raising my family here, I feel that it’s really important to be involved in the local culture and one of my favourite things to do is to take a trip to Marbella’s Casco Antiguo where there are some beautiful restaurants which offer traditional Spanish cuisine and flamenco. It is always fun to see the youngsters, and the not so young, dress up in their flamenco dresses and put on a show while you dine. You can feel arty! 8. Saddle Up
Exercise can, let’s be honest, be boring if you are hitting the gym every day, so I like to get out and about and try new things. This month I’ve been trying my hand at a bit of horse riding. I was a keen rider when I was young but I’ve not been on a horse for years, so thought it was time to saddle up and give it another go. There are some wonderful horse riding academies in Marbella and many that offer the rider the chance to venture out into the beautiful Spanish countryside for a trek - even beginners. My daughter has also just started her lessons and Morocco I think it’s going to be a wonderful way to spend time together in the fresh air. Check out Andalusian horse I am really excited about taking the riding for more information. ferry to Tangier this month when my sister comes to visit. W
hen we first meet someone and the chemical reactions in our brain and our hormones are on overdrive, the thrill and excitement of lust turns into the tossing of the clothes across the bedroom, lounge and kitchen. When we start this new exciting relationship adrenaline pumps through the body and active couples may turn into rabbits, having sex several times a day, others several times a week, more conservative couples maybe several times a month. Over time this frequency dwindles and, astoundingly, recent surveys found that
the average couple in England has sex 2.5 times a month compared to their Scottish (2.67 times a month) and Irish (2.39 times) counterparts.
“
Over time, sexual activity usually decreases from several times a week to several times a month, to once a month or less and, eventually, bedroom antics become dormant and many couples find themselves existing in sexless relationships. If there is no intimacy in the relationship many people find that they are living more of a room-mate existence. Some couples still share meals and discuss the day, others become like ships passing in the night and have separate meals, beds and entertain themselves within the house independently.
is caused by a decrease in hormones through mood changes and, in men, can lead to erectile dysfunction. Often, once time has passed and the couple has accepted that the relationship has moved beyond its sexual peak, they may just stop trying to initiate a sexual encounter with their partner because of their own fear of rejection, physical insecurity or because they don’t know how to regain the spice. There are many ways to work towards regaining an intimate relationship and, depending on the underlying cause, there are many remedies that do not involve medication.
INTIMACY CAN BE RESURRECTED BY SIMPLE TOUCHING, PLANNING ROMANTIC TIME TOGETHER FREE OF DISTRACTIONS AND ALTERING YOUR GENERAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS EACH OTHER CAN ALSO MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.”
The Welsh fare even worse with a comparatively paltry 2.1 times per month. This total is down from previous years and what is even more startling is that a large percentage of people are unhappy with the sex that they are having. So even their ‘twice a month’ sessions are not particularly satisfying experiences. Regarding toe-gripping, headspinning, heart-pounding sex, a
woman’s peak of sexual activity reaches its zenith at 28 and men’s from 18, when
testosterone levels are at their highest. A woman’s sexual drive drops from the age of 50; in men testosterone never stops being produced entirely but sustaining an erection can become more difficult from the age of 40. These differences in sexual peaks already complicate the dynamics of sexual relationships within a heterosexual couple, but it is important to realise that peak hormone levels don’t necessarily equal peak performance. Sexual youth is more about experimentation and mastering the art of knowing what to do and getting to know your body.
”
How is it that couples are functioning with such limited intimacy in their relationship? This must feel especially wrong, given the many surveys that state that men think about sex on average every seven seconds. Many factors can cause a lack of sex drive: stress, fatigue, age, being seriously under or overweight, impotency, reduction of hormones, dislike of one’s body, stimulants and having children, but this doesn’t mean that your sex life needs to fade to nothing.
Alcohol and drug use famously ignites desire but impedes performance. Many believe that by drinking alcohol their sexual drive is elevated but, in fact, a night of sex fuelled by booze can be frustrating for both parties. Men want to perform but are unable to sustain an erection and women lose their lubrication and can be bruised by the resultant sexathon. Stress, tiredness and mood can affect libido, but in different ways; they reduce desire. This
Feeling good about yourself is very important. Decreasing
stress receptors during your day, managing your time better to include time with your partner and communicating with each other more frequently can work wonders. Intimacy can be resurrected by simple touching, planning romantic time together free of distractions and altering your general attitude towards each other can also make a huge difference. Put your affectionate side on display for a change and highlight the feelings for your partner that normally you might keep hidden. If you feel that it would help, it is also possible to talk to a professional counsellor who can help in this area. For more information or guidance you can email or call me confidentially to discuss your situation in more detail, either individually or as a couple. Talking over your problems can help you find solutions that you maybe would not have anticipated without guidance and can also bring to light issues that you hadn’t previously considered.

hese days it seems that cosmetic surgery only hits the headlines when a celebrity hits the town with a brand new face and the tabloids embark on a feeding frenzy to decide whether the operation was a success or not. In all this discussion about who has had comprehensive ‘work’ done, it is all too easy to forget about cosmetic surgery’s transformative potential. During the Second World War, Archibald McIndoe improved the life chances of facially disfigured servicemen with a wide variety of new techniques that allowed them to return to civilian life with an acceptable face. Many of these are still in use today, but rarely attract as much attention as the more modest tweaks practised on the rich and famous. This more down-to-earth aspect of cosmetic surgery returned to the fore recently, as Dr. Kai Kaye and a team from Marbella’s Ocean Clinic flew out to Nairobi to help out at the Lamu District Hospital in a mission organised in collaboration with The Pablo Horstmann Foundation Spain. Accompanied by Head Nurse Louise Taylor, nurses Maria del Mar Cuevas Garcia and Alejandra Benitez Reyes and Dr. Tilman Stasch (Head Surgeon at Valentis Clinic, Nairobi), Residents Peter Biribwa and Martin Ajujo also from Nairobi and Anaesthetist Dr. Devi Mongare from the Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi, the team travelled to Lamu, which is located in a remote archipelago on the north-eastern coast of Kenya. “As a rural area with few medical facilities and high levels of poverty, Lamu suffers from a particularly precarious health situation,” says Dr. Kaye. During their time in Lamu the medics were able to operate on a total of 39 cases which included hand and facial malformations, benign and malignant tumours affecting the whole body, disfiguring diseases like neurofibromatosis, chronic wounds such as ulcers, skin defects and bone
“Seeing them smile and shine with confidence makes our work incredibly rewarding,” infections, the results of burns such as disfiguring scarring and abdominal, umbilical and scrotal hernias. Luma’s rural setting and its extreme poverty means that its inhabitants find it difficult to obtain the help that would undoubtedly be forthcoming in Europe – and their problems don’t end there, as Dr. Kaye explained: “Those who are born with a disfigurement or survive injuries have little chance of receiving adequate treatment and often remain disabled, unable to provide for themselves or their families.” The team put in a great deal of effort to ensure the mission’s success, an expedition that mirrored the impact made by the 2013 trip to a remote area
of Peru. As the medical professionals quickly discovered, in Lamu even basic facilities were limited and they were obliged to supply and transport all the equipment required, which amounted to a staggering 300 kilos of material. Dr Kaye adds, “Our team of volunteers give up their time for free, but in addition to this they have to pay for their own flights and accommodation, so it’s a big commitment.” He added that the mission was grateful to Marbella’s companies (including SOCIETY Magazine, which contributed a fourfigure sum) and citizens, not to mention patients of Ocean Clinic, who supported this mission and helped to cover the purchase of materials needed and ensure the team could operate on as many patients as possible. Even this flying visit had a major impact on the local community, as Dr. Kaye and the team managed to help nearly 40 patients in just nine days. Many of the most needy were children, who can now look forward to a far more promising future thanks to the Ocean Clinic team. “Seeing them smile and shine with confidence makes our work incredibly rewarding,” said Dr. Kaye. “The Lamu experience this year strengthened our plans to convert it into an annual mission, organised in collaboration with The Pablo Horstmann Foundation Spain and supported by the people of Marbella.” oceanclinic.net

A SMART NEW WEAPON
Against Cancer
T
he advent of the liquid biopsy ushers in a new era in the fight against cancer. It is hoped that this new tool will help to give cancer patients an even better chance of being cured of the disease.
The liquid biopsy is becoming increasingly useful in the diagnostic and therapeutic planning of treatment in oncology patients. 44
Liquid biopsy is a procedure which is now being used in the treatment and monitoring of patients with cancer. Until recently it was only used in research programmes, but now the liquid biopsy is becoming increasingly useful in the diagnostic and therapeutic planning of treatment in oncology patients. The procedure is based on the natural evolution and behaviour of malignant tumour cells.
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
In the figure attached you can see an explanatory diagram.
During the growth process they infiltrate neighbouring tissues, becoming detached from the tumour and leaking into the circulation. These cells are called CTCs (circulating tumour cells) and can be detected and measured through special electromagnetic procedures which help to determine their presence and detect variations in concentration (numbers per ml) in line with the state of the diagnosed tumour. Afterwards, once treatment has been given, CTC variation can be monitored, their evolution correlating with the patient’s condition.
Subsequently the same checks can be performed periodically, monitoring for tumour recurrence the moment it occurs. CTCs obtained from liquid biopsy have already been useful in breast cancer, colorectal cancer and cancer of the prostate for many years, their evolution being extensively studied and validated. In prostate cancer, increased CTC count has been detected in the circulation several months preceding the increase in serum PSA levels, with increased PSA being an indicator of possible recurrence.
This CTC measurement has now been complemented by the possible measurement, not only of the number of cells present but also of DNA and RNA fragments present in the patient’s blood circulation known as ctDNA and ctRNA. This allows us to: • Be aware of the presence of an active tumour. • Be able to determine mutations presented by the tumour. • Establish different treatment possibilities. • Know how they will affect development of the disease.
This is a significant advance in ascertaining the evolving status of different tumours. All that is required to check this is a simple blood test, taking just 5ml of blood. In the near future this procedure will be included as part of the usual management of the patient’s treatment. Currently this investigation (Liquid Biopsy) is already being performed at HC Marbella Hospital’s Oncology Unit, mainly for patients with diagnostic problems but in the future it is likely to be used for the majority of patients to monitor the progress of their condition more accurately. tarting out on the journey to complete a running event (or even starting to run for the first time, for fun) needn’t be daunting. Simply follow a few tips and you’ll soon start looking forward to your running and an injury-free transition. First things first – kit! Do you have a decent, well-fitting pair of running trainers that are less than six months old? If not, now is the time to invest in a pair. Go to a running shop which has staff knowledgeable enough to match the right trainer to your gait. While there, stock up on a few basics if they are not in your collection – shorts, leggings, t-shirts and perhaps even a light waterproof jacket.

Make sure that you try them on instore as you don’t want any chafing halfway around the course.
The best gains in training are made when you start slowly, build up progressively, have plenty of rest days and, most importantly, be consistent.
It’s a great idea to speak to a professional trainer regarding how best to begin your running programme. The best gains in training are made when you start slowly, build up progressively, have plenty of rest days and, most importantly, be consistent. At this stage it’s a great idea to think about other forms of exercise to mix your training up a little. Just running the increasing distances that you’ll be demanding of your body can be very tough on your joints and connective tissues, so why not add in a bike ride, team sports game or swim to your weekly routine? Also, start and keep a diary of all that you’ve done so far - it’s a great motivator.
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
The best motivational tricks for getting out there include :
01 02 03 04
Keeping a plan and record of your runs on your main calendar or diary. You’ll not want to miss a session if there’s a visual cue. Also, remove all the obstacles to you getting the run done, for example keep your kit by the front door so that it’s there ready to be put on before you have a chance to sit down and chill when you come back home. You can attach personal mental rewards to runs: “I’m only going to watch the next episode of ‘Breaking Bad’/’Homeland’/’insert favourite mini-series’) after my next run.”
Once you’re running regularly and - hopefully - enjoying the increasing levels of fitness, a big part of continuing to enjoy the process is staying free of injury. How do you do this? Pre-workout you should focus on mobilisation; this is the process of gently increasing the blood flow to your muscles, lubricating your joints and moving your body into a state where you are ready to exercise safely. It should form part of every warm-up before you get out there and start running. Movements like leg swings, spiderman steps and squat-tostands are a good trio to start with.

Post-workout is the time to stretch, as static stretching will be more effective when the muscles are warm and malleable. Try to hold each pose for a full 30 seconds, to gain maximum benefit. Think about the period immediately after your run being the time when you have the best opportunity to prepare and recover, ready for your next run. It is very important to make the right food and drink choices at this time, to get the most out of the effort you’ve put in.
Think about these few suggestions and you’ll soon start noticing results. Best of luck!

The Salon
I am back by popular demand; it seems that you can’t get enough of my sharp tongue. On a serious note, I cannot believe the feedback from my last column and how many of you requested that I continue with it. I am truly touched. This month, I have decided to talk about salon etiquette, or rather the lack of it. Before you walk through that salon door here are a few things you should know.
ON THE MOVE
The first subject I am going to tackle is a bit of a touchy one with many stylists. What should a client do when they want to switch hairdressers within the same salon? Personally, I do not care who you go to as long as you stay with the salon. The worst thing that can happen is the client leaves because they feel too embarrassed to book in with someone else. The sooner all stylists get on board and see the bigger picture the better; it’s time hairdressers left their egos at the door. I remember being at a fortieth birthday bash when a certain local hairstylist (who will remain nameless), came up to me and asked me who I thought I was? I put my drink down and retorted, “I am fairly certain I know who I am, but who are YOU?” To which his unbelievable response was,”Is that how you stole my clients - with your clever mouth?” I decided I needed to share a few home truths with him and set about explaining that the Easter Bunny didn’t
54
really exist, that Father Christmas was just a marketing tool and short of pulling a gun, you cannot steal someone else’s clients. He then began to (eye roll) list the clients I had supposedly taken from him and, to be fair, they were all now coming to see me. “If I had so many clients leaving me, I wouldn’t be asking another hairdresser why they had stolen them, I would be asking myself how I had lost them,” I pointed out. “Maybe you should look at this as a training exercise and find some time to evaluate your skill level and work on the areas that need attention?” and with that I picked up my drink and sashayed away, Beyonce style. Back to the point in hand (sorry, I do tend to go off at a tangent), if you want to switch stylists and are feeling a little uneasy about it, speak to the receptionist. If a salon is run properly he/she is a pivotal part of any communication and will make the transition between stylists easy for you. There will be no row, no arguments; the receptionist will simply fix the situation.
THE BEAUTY BAROMETER
Be nice to your hairdresser. Don’t punish us because you’re having a bad day. LETTING THINGS SLIDE
Another issue that crops up a lot is when clients who have stayed loyal to their stylist for years, feel their hairdresser isn’t making an effort anymore. Again, there is no excuse for this. I have always believed that, even if your client has been coming to you for twenty years, it should still feel like the first time, every time. If you are going to be there, BE THERE. The best way to give your hairdresser a kick up the backside is to drop into the conversation, “What about trying something a little different?” That would make my ears prick up and realise something was up. You can also try, “I am really bored with my hair” and watch your stylist’s back stiffen.
FINDING THE ONE
When looking for a new stylist, you want to consider their ability, flair, the rapport they have with you and their reliability. Are they going to be there for you or are you going to get that dreaded phone call from reception telling you your stylist is ill for the fifth time in a row, when you spotted photos of him on Facebook throwing shapes on the dance floor at 4am this morning in Linekers?
What to do when the wheels come off Seventy-five per cent of what goes wrong happens in the consultation. I cannot stress enough the importance of communication with your stylist. If you are unhappy with your hair, do not just walk away and never return to the salon. Trust me, we’d rather make you happy than lose you as a client – well, most of the time.
and most likely they will, but they may never return to the salon again, even if they were happy with their hair.
WE HAVE FEELINGS TOO
GET ORGANISED
Be nice to your hairdresser. Don’t punish us because you’re having a bad day. Yes, we are your therapist, shoulder to cry on, part of a select few you share you darkest secrets with, but ultimately we are your hairdresser, not a punch-bag.
THE HARD SELL
I would also advise you to treat the receptionist well. Never underestimate them, no matter how sweet and innocent they seem, because they truly hold all the power. If you are repeatedly being told your stylist is booked, I would suggest it’s time to take a look at your attitude.
Pre-book! My clients are known to book a year’s worth of appointments in one hit. I have always encouraged pre-booking; if I didn’t there would be absolute chaos in my life and, I promise you, I would end up being sectioned in the nearest nuthouse.
One of my bugbears is clients feeling pressured into buying products. I really do hate this. If it ever happens in Reflections, just tell me and I will rip the stylists’ heads off. We can, of course, recommend products but we are NOT retail. Clients become totally demotivated if they feel their stylist is trying out for sales rep of the year. They will feel like they HAVE to buy something,
People often ask me the key to my success and I think it’s mainly giving a damn about my clients. Honestly, I truly care about them. I see past the business part and always think about the bigger picture. Oh, and of course a helluva lot of brandy. Ta-ra! Love, Jonathan

SPANISH SPANISH FLY FLY WE FIND OUT IF SPAIN’S SECOND EVER SUPERCAR IS A BIG LEAGUE PLAYER

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the GTA SPANO
81
TORQUE TALK
A
nyone who tells you that it is impossible for a new supercar manufacturer to come from nowhere and carve their own success story under the shadow of Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche, is either going to be dead right or just plain wrong.
Compared to the original Spano, the car I have come to Spania GTA’s factory in Valencia to drive is over 90% new. In fact, Spania founder and CEO, Domingo Ochoa, explained that apart from the wing mirrors, almost all the components of this latest car have been redesigned.
While several hopefuls have come and gone in just the last 15 years, both Koenigsegg and Pagani, each led by the man whose name is on their cars, have beaten the odds to become legends in their own time.
At 870,000 euros plus tax, the GTA Spano costs a tad more than the Porsche 918 Spyder, but is less than a third the price of the smaller-engined, less powerful W Motors Lykan. The Zenvo ST1 is slightly cheaper and more powerful than the Spano, but is also heavier.
Adequate financing coupled with cutting edge design and engineering resources are certainly vital ingredients, but the final key to success is finding enough customers willing to pay the asking price for the car of their dreams. Fortunately, new multi-millionaires are being minted around the world all the time, and once these people have had their fill of the wares from the usual suspects, the hunt to have something different and more exclusive in their garages is on. While Hispano Suiza and Pegaso produced some glorious sports cars and luxury cars that are looked upon favourably by enthusiasts, the Spanish automotive industry has absolutely no history of making supercars. The radical Tramontana, which has the appearance of a large formula racing car, was introduced in 2007 as the first production Spanish supercar. In 2011, this was joined by the GTA Spano, which made its international debut at that year’s Geneva Motor Show.
82
The heart of any supercar is its engine. Both it’s potential to produce headline power and torque numbers as well as a rousing soundtrack are de riguer at this level, and the Spano scores heavily through its use of a bespoke 7,990cc biturbo V10. This powerhouse of an engine is designed and built for GTA Spania by Ilmore Engineering in the UK, whose reputation in F1 and IndyCar precedes them. Their brief was to create a bi-turbo 90° V10 motor with 900hp and 1,200Nm of torque as its headline numbers. In the event, the production engine makes 925hp at 6,300rpm, with 1,220Nm of torque at 4,500rpm. Another goal was progressive power delivery characteristics that would be both user friendly, and place relatively low stress levels on the mechanical components. The modest specific output of 115hp/litre from a boost pressure of 1.0 bar, and a relatively low 9.08:1 compression ratio are the results of this philosophy.
Keen to do more than just maintain the status quo, Spania GTA are exploring cutting edge technologies and advanced materials like graphene to improve performance. The world’s first 2D material, graphene is a carbon crystal consisting of single atom thick planar sheets, with the atoms arranged in a honeycombshaped lattice. Graphene has some very unique properties, amongst which are ultralow weight, a structural strength 200 times greater than steel, and superb electrical conductivity. Graphenano S.L., the largest manufacturer of this very exotic and expensive space-age material just happens to be Spanish as well, a fact that Spania GTA has leveraged to their advantage. Mixing graphene with carbon fibre for the GTA Spano’s monocoque tub has created a structure with the incredible static torsional rigidity figure of 60,000Nm/degree, about one third higher than any other current production car. Most supercar makers like McLaren and Pagani use carbon-fibre for the central tub and hang tubular steel space frames off both ends. However, along with the Porsche 918 Spyder, the GTA Spano is unique in having its rear engine and gearbox carrier structure also made from carbon-fibre
TORQUE TALK
as an extension of the central tub. This gains extra strength by being made from Spania GTA’s patented titanium-reinforced carbon-fibre honeycomb material. The suspension uses traditional racecar style double wishbones at each corner. These are made of forged steel, with the hydraulic dampers from Öhlins. An electrically actuated front lift feature raises the front suspension by 60mm to clear ramps and speed bumps.
Nice details like the milled aluminium centre console, knurled control knobs, instrument binnacle and air vents, and the swathes of carbon-fibre trim add to the feeling of high-tech exclusivity.
Tipping the scales at 1,400kg (DIN) the GTA Spano comes in at the lighter end of the major league supercar scale, and is stopped by four AP Racing 380 x 34mm cross-drilled vented carbon-ceramic discs, clamped by six-pot callipers. The forged alloy wheels are 9.5J x 19-inch in front and 12.0J x 20-inch at the rear, shod with 265/35ZR19 and 345/30ZR20 Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres. As this was a pre-production prototype, and an evolving one at that, an openminded approach was called for. First impressions are of a car with it’s own strong and distinctive look and feel. Unlike the McLaren MP4-12C before it morphed into the 650S, the styling of the GTA Spano is in no way generic. Thus, just as with the cars from Pagani and Koenigsegg, whether or not its looks appeal to your visual palette, the GTA Spano will never be mistaken for anything else on the planet. Swing open one of the butterfly doors that replace the conventional front-hinged doors used before and you will find that the sills are not so wide that they cause ingress/egress difficulties. And once you are ensconced in the comfortable leather and Alcantara clad drivers seat, the range of powered adjustment, and that of the steering column makes finding the right driving position quite easy. However, once I had achieved ‘my’ position I found that the 340mm diameter flat-bottomed steering wheel obscured the tops of the speedo and rev counter dials. The more common 360mm size of wheel would obviate this issue as well as giving more leverage since the hydraulic power steering on this prototype proved quite weighty. Nice details like the milled aluminium centre console, knurled control knobs, instrument binnacle and air vents, and the swathes of carbon-fibre trim add to the feeling of high-tech exclusivity. However, in a moment of luxury largesse that goes against the grain of the weight saving measures elsewhere, GTA decided that the opening and closing of the glove box lid should be powered both ways! GTA are so obsessive about quality they even make the bespoke glass for the Spano in their factory. They also make the LED taillights as well as the bespoke, in-house manufactured seven-layer laminated curved glass roof panel, which turns opaque at the touch of a button to screen out the sun.
83
TORQUE TALK
However, unlike the conceptually similar Magic Sky roof feature on the Mercedes SL and SLC roadsters, which is either on or off, the GTA roof features a graduated opaqueness as well as a full-width, twosection sun visor operated the same way.
The 8.0-litre capacity of the V10 gives it a lot of inherent grunt, and with 1,220Nm of torque going to the tarmac through just the rear wheels via the CIMA 7-speed sequential gearbox with limited slip differential, the potential for the tail to wag the dog is certainly there.
Turn the key in the ignition, push the Start button and eager anticipation turns to delight as the 8.0-litre V10 bursts into life and settles down to a fast 1,100rpm idle.
Domingo explained that Melvin Goh of Eurosports Auto, GTA’s Singapore distributor, suggested fitting a system that would limit boost in the lower gears for the benefit of wealthy clients unused to cars of such massive power.
As expected, the twin-turbocharger installation muffles both the leading edge and harmonics of the engine note. Blip the throttle and the offbeat soundtrack from behind your head is most pleasing, but compared to the razor sharp attack delivered by the naturally aspirated V10 in the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracán, the sound reaching your eardrums is relatively subdued. That said, the extra layers of sound created by the forced induction and the distinctive ‘psst’ when the waste gates blow off excess boost add their own distinctive brand of aural histrionics to the Spano soundtrack. A turbocharged V10 is a one-of-a-kind event in the supercar universe, and you will have nothing to complain about when the motor is in full battle cry.
84 84
The engineers took that on board when programming their bespoke and patented 32-bit ECU, so both boost and ignition advance in the first three gears are dialled back to deliver only as much power as the sensors report can be safely deployed on a dry road. The fully Monty is on tap from fourth gear onwards. This emphasis on traction over rubber burning drama allows the GTA Spano to record an impressive 2.9 sec leap to 100km/h, and once it is full hooked up it goes hard all the way to its claimed top speed of over 370km/h. The Spano is very easy to drive at normal road speeds, its healthy lowend torque and smooth, fast upshifts using the carbon-fibre paddles in
manual mode adding up to very civilised progress down the road. Things are less happy if the gearbox is left to its own devices, and when you come to a halt at a junction for instance, the gearbox shifts down gear-by-gear in a less than smooth fashion. Take manual control however, and the problem goes away. Oodles of torque mean not much throttle is required to move along at a decent clip in normal driving. Turbo lag is apparent if you let the revs fall too far off the boil, but if you are in the appropriate gear for your speed, the cars ability to shift its location in the blink of an eye is simply mind-boggling. Look at a space, tap the throttle and you are there! You can both hear and feel the electronics taking charge when the rear wheels are teetering on the brink of breaking loose. When torque is on the verge of overwhelming mechanical grip as I experienced during a full throttle overtake in third, the palpable thrust is gently reined in, accompanied by a clicking noise and the orange warning light flashing away. As torque reduction is looked after by the ECU, it is all very progressive, with just the feeling that a gentle hand is preventing the locomotive levels of torque from spinning up the rear
TORQUE TALK
Michelins and throwing the back end sideways at big speeds. The other half of the equation is the chassis, and here the engineers have done a fine job. The cars immense structural stiffness meant that the spring and damper settings could be kept reasonable, to the benefit of ride quality. Thus, despite the absence of clever electronically controlled active ride systems as found on the latest offerings from Ferrari and McLaren, the Spano has a relatively compliant ride. It is miles better than the Lamborghini Aventador for instance, and about one and a half notches stiffer than
the highly acclaimed McLaren 570S that also relies on good old school engineering to achieve a satisfactory ride/handling compromise. The Spano has a front/rear weight distribution of 44/56 percent, and the combination of its nicely judged suspension settings and 150kg of total downforce with the rear wing in its second position balances the car across both axles at 200km/h. Ultra low roll angles and total stability in fast sweepers quickly engenders driver confidence, and the Spano was hands off stable at 280km/h on our test track, where the main straight was too short to allow higher speeds to be achieved.
The only major gripe I had on the day was with the hydraulic power steering system, which was set up with too much resistance for my liking. The engineers have backed this off since, and I was told during my drive that an electric power steering system aimed at more precise weight and response calibration at all speeds, as well as fuel saving and lower emissions, is in the pipeline as is right-handdrive. My time with the GTA Spano was absolutely fascinating. There is a lot to like about this car, from its distinctive looks and intergalactic speed capability to the analogue way it drives that demands active driver involvement, and commensurately rewards decisive inputs.
85
TORQUE TALK
The Spano is a rough diamond with the right basic stuff to be a strong contender in the top echelon of major league supercars. Interestingly, at times I could not help but feel that in some ways it drove like a more powerful Noble M600. Given how well regarded that car is, and how good it has become over time through careful honing, this observation is nothing short of a complement. THIS IS SPANIA GTA The seed of the Spania GTA story was sown in 1994 when Domingo Ochoa, who has been in the automobile and motorsport industries for 35 years, including a stint at Ferrari when he was 29-years-old, decided that being his own boss to fulfil his dream was the way forward. He founded Spania GTA to focused on race preparation for GT and one make Cup championships. By 2004, the company’s activities had moved up to an international level, supporting clients in the International Open GT,
86
The European F3 Championship, Super League Formula, and the North American Rolex Series amongst others. Scoring wins in all of these championships, the Spania GTA team worked with outstanding young drivers such as Marc Gené, Jaime Alguersuari, María del Villota, and Borja Garcia amongst others, all of who graduated to F1. After successfully campaigning a Mosler MT900 in the GT Championship until 2008, Domingo decided it was time to realise his dream and design and build his own supercar. This car had to be different from any potential competitor, and a wealth of ideas, some of which have since been patented, drove certain aspects of the cars design and technological content. Designed by Spania GTA’s engineering director, Sento Pallardó, the GTA Spano set out to be the fastest and most powerful car ever made in Spain, and fully competitive with its class rivals.
The GTA Spano debuted at 2011 Geneva Motor Show to huge interest, and a few collectors bought the first few of the 99 examples that will ever be made. By 2015, the Team’s progressive development process had made so many significant strides that the decision was taken to embark on a major technical redesign that kept the visual signature of the car but improved everything else. The GTA Spano has featured the movie Need For Speed, and on the PlayStation and X-Box game platforms, all of which are valuable awareness raising promotional tools that money cannot buy. When asked why the GTA Spano does not have its creator’s name on it, Domingo modestly explained that while his family name, ‘Ochoa’, from the Basque region of Spain, means ‘Wolf’, the only clue to this is the black wolf in the Spania GTA marque logo. “I’d much rather fly the flag for Spain,” he said.

HONOUR EMBLEM IS MY
T
ravel in Spain could be dangerous right up to the end of the nineteenth century. As late as 1884 travellers were reporting that bandits still abounded in and around the city of Málaga. These highwaymen had a very particular approach to their victims. They would creep up behind the intended victim, and throw a cloak over his or her head and arms. They then relieved the poor unfortunate of his or her valuables. If they met with resistance, their response was ruthless. With a dextrous slash with a very sharp dagger the traveller was disembowled. Apart from anything else, this practice gave rise to the expression “cloak and dagger”. In point of fact, such activity was not confined solely to the Malagueño region, but proliferated throughout Andalucia. It became increasingly apparent that something
88
had to be done. Law enforcement in both town and countryside was largely under the control of the Holy Hermandades, which had been established by the Catholic Monarchs for that purpose. They still survive today, of course, and come into the public spotlight every Semana Santa, but until the middle of the nineteenth century their rôle was far from being merely ceremonial.
María de la Paz Bernardo Eulogio Juan Nepomuceno Girón y Ezpeleta Las Casas y Enrile, Duque de Ahumada and Marqués de la Amarillas (18031869). This worthy not only descended from a line of important worthies like a fifteenth century Master of the Order of Calatrava, but through his paternal grandmother was an eleventh generation descendant of the Aztec Emperor Moctezuma II himself!
Unfortunately, the organisations had been infiltrated by local politicians and were riddled with corruption. Equally, each Hermandad jealously guarded its own sphere of influence, and it was a simple matter, therefore, for a miscreant to avoid justice simply by moving from one area to another.
After a distinguished career, which was not without its ups and downs as a result of the uncertain political conditions of the time in Spain, he was asked in April 1844 by the then prime minister, Luis González Bravo, to form a national security body based on discipline, loyalty, and dedication. The Guardia Civil was the result, with its proud motto “Honour is my emblem”, and the colloquial name “La Benemérita”.

duties were defined as putting an end to brigandage, particularly in lawless Andalucía, the restoration and maintenance of land ownership, and the suppression of the spontaneous insurrections amongst a restless peasantry caused by the upheavals of the First Carlist War. Don Francisco based the organisation largely upon the pattern of the Napoleonic light infantry, which was highly mobile and capable of being deployed in whatever terrain, however inhospitable, which presented itself. Thus large areas of countryside could be swiftly patrolled by the basic guardia unit of two men, called a pareja. This pattern of organisation has remained largely unchanged. In a very short space of time these units came to be identified by the disaffected peasantry as the iron hand of a repressive government, and this attitude persisted well into the twentieth century and is to be found even now in some parts of Spain. Members were never deployed in their own area, in order to avoid local influences, and were accommodated in barracks like the military. Don Francisco fully intended that his creation should have a strict military basis, being himself a soldier with a proud record. He developed a blue uniform (a light green replaced this in 1943) in a military style, and wanted to include a “morrión” headdress in honour of the feared tercios of the sixteenth century (today they are worn by the papal Swiss Guard). The prime minister, Don Ramón María de Narváez y Campos, Duque de Valencia, felt that this was a trifle excessive, and suggested substituting the tricornio; a three cornered hat made of polished leather, such as worn by the Spanish cavalry. Queen Isabel supported the prime minister, and so the hat was adopted. (It was also pointed out that such a headdress enabled men to sit upright against the back of train seats whilst resting their heads!)
The Guardia Civil was the result, with its proud motto “Honour is my emblem”, and the colloquial name “La Benemérita”.
In its early stages the Guardia Civil was a governmental tool for repression and the maintenance of civil order.
Largely unchecked by anyone, with no close ties to the areas in which they served, the guards took no responsibility for their actions, and they swiftly came to be feared and hated. Federico Garcia Lorca, arguably Spain’s greatest poet of the twentieth century, portrayed the brutality of the Guardia Civil in many of his poems. The tricornio itself became a symbol of repression, and the “joke” swiftly grew that such hats were magical, as they transformed anybody wearing one into a violent sadist. Under Franco the mere sight of one was enough to send shivers down the stoutest spine. With the coming of democracy it was clear that a radical overhaul of the force was needed. The military nature of the uniform was replaced by a police style one, the colour was changed once again from a light military green to a more pleasant olive shade, and the tricornio was relegated to ceremonies and parades. Today even the gorra teresiana (the French “kepi”) is being replaced by a baseball cap. And the reforms go even deeper. Families have been accommodated in the barracks from the beginning, but the
Guardia Civil was the first European police force to admit same-sex couples into such installations.
The Guardia’s duties have also expanded. Duque de Ahumada They still maintain security in rural areas, and look after the safety of the royal family, but such operations have expanded to include security on Spain’s borders, in embassies abroad, at airports and ports and in prisons; action against cyber crime, terrorism, drugs and weapons; intelligence and counter-intelligence work; environmental protection with the highly specialised SEPRONA; and the ubiquitous and deeply loved Highway Patrol – TRÁFICO!

DISCOVERING THE RISKS
OF WORLDWIDE TRAVEL Conflict Marbella, the new dedicated consultancy service in the region, provides a range of bespoke intelligence, investigation, security and risk advice services supported from its head office in London.
Mike LaCorte, a founder of Conflict International has over 20 years experience in the investigation industry. He has been instrumental in drawing a number of high profile corporate and private investigation cases to a conclusion and his expertise in gathering legally admissible evidence is highly regarded. Mike speaks English, Spanish and Italian, and was elected 2nd Vice President of the World Association of Detectives in 2015.
M
itigating risk is particularly topical when it comes to assisting people who need to travel across the world. Recent terrorist attacks in Europe and North Africa have highlighted the need to ensure that a destination is safe, which is where expert knowledge and advice comes in. Conflict Marbella specialises in offering discreet tailored services to highnet-worth individuals, celebrities and business people aimed at making sure they can move around safely and securely at all times. “It is about thoroughly researching the location and analysing any areas of concern,” says Conflict Marbella director Mike LaCorte. “So we provide in-country briefing reports. What is the current risk in that particular country? How safe is it? What are the issues and threats? We look at every aspect and produce a deep in-country intelligence report, not just from publicly available information via the Foreign Office or the US State Department, but also from local sources with vital specialist knowledge.”
Local knowledge Very often, local knowledge will make all the difference. Conflict Marbella, through its parent company, Conflict International, has contacts with a variety of sources all over the world. Mike LaCorte adds: “Our local sources are able to offer independent advice on political situations as well as movements on the ground operationally and the risks and threats associated with that.” “A key driver in providing this kind of service is the ability to offer a bespoke package with intelligence gathered specifically to target the location they are visiting, rather than just using the more general public information.”
Teams can be deployed instantly almost anywhere in the world. This in-depth information can inform how a client can go about their normal business with as little disruption as possible, whether they are travelling alone or needing additional security to assist them at their destination. A worldwide travel risk assessment can then be combined with a range of options to ensure that the client’s safety can be maintained while they are in the area. This may just be a phone call to Conflict’s team to check on any particular concern that arises, right through to offering a full professional protection team on-site with armoured vehicles during the visit for complete peace of mind. Teams can be deployed instantly almost anywhere in the world.

Rio awaits Conflict Marbella’s directors have extensive experience in compiling reports for countries all over the world. They have special expertise in assessing security risks around major sporting and cultural events. Mike LaCorte says this gave Conflict a valuable insight when preparing for visits to Brazil around the World Cup in 2014. “Our bespoke travel management solutions are being reactivated again this year for the Games. For high-net-worth individuals and corporates visiting Rio, they want to know that their trip will go smoothly so we can advise and protect with our in-depth knowledge of potential issues.”
conflictinternational.com
Our bespoke travel management solutions are being reactivated again this year for the Games. Much has been written in the media about concerns over security in Rio de Janeiro with the government deploying thousands of extra troops to protect visitors. However, assurances from the authorities might not be enough for some of Conflict’s clients. “The corporate sector will be entertaining their high-end clients in Rio and in many cases their insurance policy may require some due diligence to be carried out assessing any potential risks so companies know exactly where they are taking their clients.” A similar service looks set to be available for the next World Cup in Russia too in 2018. While much is known about travelling to Moscow, Conflict will compile assessments of risks in the many other less prominent venues scattered around the country. Security is vital when travelling to unfamiliar countries and, through Conflict Marbella, a service now exists where risks can be mitigated – adding much needed peace of mind. Bedroom design?
It’s child’s play! By Amy-Rose McDowell from Foc Design
W
e pride ourselves on catering for every style, whether it is ornate and detailed or super sleek and Scandi-modern. We are lucky to be exposed to differing tastes and to be pushed as designers into exploring all styles and influences because we discover many new products. Believe us, it is is not unusual to hear an “Oooooooh!” from one side of the FOC studio, followed by a stampede of heels as we all flock over to contribute to the gasping. But what if the person you are designing for is 10 years old, six years old - or even three? It is both challenging and exciting to enter the minds of the young and remember
110
what it was like to want a magical space to inspire our dreams. We are familiar with carpets and headboards - but what if one of our younger clients wants a room made of clouds and a bed in the shape of a teepee? It’s not as difficult as you might think; however, finding the perfect bedside table for a teepee requires a little more research than usual. Once the design process is covered the next important stage is presenting the ideas to the client. Feeling a little shy and intimidated, it is not unusual for them to okay every fabric we show them, so it becomes part of our job to ensure that they feel able to be as brutally honest as some of our fully-grown clients! Being able to have a hand
in the design of their environment is part of growing up and is essential for children’s growth and helping them develop a sense of self and self-worth. This doesn’t necessarily mean that your kids should have free license. Whilst kids know what they like, they will most likely not be considering what you like and, unless they have done unusually well in predicting movements in the stock market or online gambling, chances are that the house they live in is yours. Ultimately you parents have to live with whatever design scheme is selected and not all children consider how all the items they have chosen will look in a room when placed next to each other. So

The preferences of young people are notoriously transient and what they like from the age of 12 compared to the age of 13 can and will vary wildly...
how can you strike a balance with such opposite concepts - combining bright, colourful and potentially wacky in a way that makes a room look and feel coordinated and harmonious? Our advice is simple: start with a neutral canvas on the walls, ceiling and floor and introduce colour through feature walls, soft furnishings or accessories. You don’t have to jump straight in the deep end by painting every wall fuchsia, rather start with a light tone of champagne, stone, grey or white and slowly add colour and texture through things that can easily be changed. The preferences of

young people are notoriously transient and what they like from the age of 12 to the age of 13 can and will vary wildly. Why lumber yourself with things that are hard to change, like luridly coloured carpets, when you will be coerced (and impoverished) by the need to upgrade them regularly? Large areas of bold colour are also a huge commitment and, in our experience, can date a room very quickly. One important and perhaps overlooked subject when it comes to kids’ rooms is storage. Let’s face it, nobody likes a messy room. Children tolerate it only because the effort involved in addressing it is more than it takes to ignore it and we all remember how good it felt when mum could tolerate it no longer and she tidied up for us. The other upside of storage from a parental point of view is that it means that a child’s bedroom can turn from a day time play space into a night time chill zone and, with less stimulation, the nippers are more likely to sleep. There is a huge amount of evidence supporting the theory that children who get less sleep experience academic underachievement and poor emotional and behavioural

regulation, so facilitating a good night’s sleep is something worth investing in. Think about the senses - light can play a big part in this, so for the summer months a blackout blind is an invaluable tool, sound should be kept to a minimum, relaxing smells like lavender can be introduced using room fragrances and, when it comes to touch, you can give them high quality cotton bed linen to ensure maximum comfort. With the basics in place you can start to enjoy the journey of designing the room too; handing the controls to your child can be fun for both of you – the kid is given some power, meaning you can loosen the reins and watch the humans you created make something

A Summer
OF SOUND AND VISION By Eleanor McKenzie
S
ummer days are on the way and with them the outdoor lifestyle that everyone living on the Costa del Sol loves so much. Already, sunbathers are on the beaches, runners are pounding the seaside paseos and the residents of homes and gardens along the coast are thinking about ways to maximise the use of gardens and terraces in preparation for the season of sun that makes life in southern Spain so attractive. For many people living in Spain, their outdoor space is an extension of the home that gets far more use than any equivalent areas in the more northerly countries. An English garden is a thing of beauty in Spring and Summer, but
122
HOME COUTURE
it often has to be admired through a window rather than used for al fresco dining due to the ever present possibility of bad weather or rain. Chris Huntley and Tim Milne at DHS have a wealth of fabulous new toys that will make your garden a playground of sound and vision. You’ll never again have to forsake the garden at any time of day to watch a film or the football, and they have state-of-the art technology to ensure that there is music wherever you go. What have they got for you?
THE PATIO THEATRE It’s a summer evening and you have just finished dining outside. It’s too lovely to go inside for entertainment, so you press a button and just like magic a 100-inch screen glides silently out of a discreet cover and voila, you have a home cinema outdoors. I have used 100-inches (that’s 254 cm) as an example, because as Chris explained, “we can adapt the screen size to the customers wishes and the available space.” The custom built cabinet that holds the screen is not a “one size fits all” it can be built to suit your outdoor environment and harmonise with your decorative style. The system that DHS recommends is the Stealth Patio Theatre from Stealth Acoustics in the USA. This awardwinning company really has worked on perfecting an outdoor cinematic entertainment system that provides the very best quality in both audio and visuals. Stealth Patio Theatre contains a super-bright LED screen that is designed for maximum visibility in bright sunshine, just ask at DHS for a demonstration
and you’ll see what I mean! “It’s all waterproof and weather-proof,” Chris assures me. Yes, it’s a rugged piece of kit, so no need to worry about the effects of the elements. I’m sure everyone who sees it will be excited by, and have an “I want one!” moment. The Stealth Patio sound system is as clear as crystal and has specially designed Stingray outdoor speakers with subwoofers. You may find that you become the envy of the neighbourhood and a ‘destination home’ for your friends. And, all this talk about sound, brings me to the topic of music.
SUMMER TUNES Enjoying music in an outdoor environment can be a bit of a hit or miss affair. Sound waves travel differently in outdoor spaces, which is why music festivals need such gigantic stacks of amps to either side of the stage. At DHS they have several outdoor music solutions that will allow you to sunbathe in an environment of ‘immersive audio’, which is a rather pleasing industry phrase for ‘multi-directional sound’ Chris and Tim showed me a range of speakers that can be hidden in shrubbery, concealed amongst foliage or arranged as an architectural feature. Nobody will know they are there, yet the beautiful music travels everywhere. The system design is a collaboration between the customer and DHS – if you want more subwoofers, then you can have them, and if there is some particular sound experience you want to achieve, then talk to the guys at DHS.
So, if you feel excited by the idea of a summer of outdoor sound and vision, then I heartily suggest you call for an appointment with Chris and Tim. Their new showroom is an Aladdin’s cave of technological wonders where you can learn how to create an outdoor environment for every mood and occasion at the touch of a button. Once you’ve experienced the joys of an outdoor entertainment system you’ll be reluctant to head back indoors, although DHS has some exciting ‘toys’ in store for when that season comes – it’s the ‘go to’ place for year round sound, vision and much more.

COSTA CUISINE
WALNUT BUTTER So most of us love nut butters but we also usually end up spending a fortune on them! Here is a super simple recipe that is incredibly delicious and super duper easy to make! Once you start making your own, it will be hard to digest the shop bought stuff that is usually laced with tons of hydrogenated fats!
Ingredients
Method
2 cups of walnuts (soaked or toasted up to you)
Blend all ingredients and keep in an air tight glass jar. If you want the nut butter to be even more nutritious then activate your nuts by soaking them.
1 Vanilla pod scraped 1 tbs of maple syrop 1/2 cup of coconut oil Pinch of Pink salt
128
If you don’t want to just use normal walnuts that are raw or for extra depth of flavour use toasted nuts!

Knowing which wine is the perfect match with each dish is the mark of a real expert, so we are very lucky that our sommelier, Julio, has all the answers. This month he explains why that French classic, Lobster Thermidor and a good quality Meursault makes for a very happy marriage.
Lobster Thermidor
& Buttery Meursault
The Creamy White Meursault Although it has no Grands Crus, Meursault has become one of the most well known white wine villages in the Côte de Beaune and its most famous export is renowned for its richness of flavour and a creamy texture that sometimes leads the wines to be called “buttery wines”. Meursault is often less expensive than the objectively better Grands Crus from the region offering amazingly rich, buttery-layered flavours with a sort of nutty character rather than fruit. The creamy characteristic is brought on by the long oak ageing that is a hallmark of Meursault.
D-Wine Choice of the Month Lobster Thermidor Style with Béchamel Sauce
Lobster Thermidor is a luxurious dish, a staple of classic French cuisine in which lobster meat is simmered in a creamy mixture of butter, herbs, pepper, and mustard sauce and then served in the lobster shell. A classic béchamel sauce is prepared from wild fish stock, butter, flour, milk, herbs, pepper and a hint of nutmeg. The meat is added to the béchamel sauce before being loaded into the lobster shell. Grated parmesan cheese is sprinkled on top and then the dish is baked until done.

D-Wine Advice A rich lobster dish calls for an even richer Chardonnay. Go for a White Meursault with hints of grapefruit, lime, apricot or fig and honey along with cream, butter, honey or vanilla notes. On the palate Meursault is rich and fat with a cheerful and appealing taste of hazelnut. Its unctuousness and freshness are in silky balance, making it an aristocrat among white Burgundies. Unsurprisingly, it has a natural affinity with this classic lobster dish, which is rendered sublime by the wine’s texture and acidity.

Less Stress with
“
S
unbed Wars” and “Sunbed Anxiety” are real phenomena that all too frequently spoil a holiday. Just as the sun’s rays cause the outdoor temperatures to rise, arguments over the best sunbeds, and whether throwing a towel on one really constitutes ownership, bring tempers to the boil as sunbathers debate who got there first. Now, a brilliant new app for
the mobile phone from a young UK-based company is poised to take the stress out of the sunbed scenario and it is launching in Marbella.
The app, which is called BookMySunbed is available free from both the Apple App Store and Google Play and it promises to make sun worship in Marbella – and in holiday resorts around the world – a much less stressful experience for both holiday makers and holiday resorts.
We
Marbella!
Directors and developers of the BookMySunbed app, Daniel and Anil Jain believe that Marbella is the perfect place to roll out the service. As they told Society, “Marbella is steeped in so much history and romance. With the Marbella Club Hotel being one of the world’s first ‘club resorts’ that started the global resort trend, it seemed
fitting that BookMySunbed should launch in this majestic place, helping to remind people of the areas significance and also to showcasing the birthplace of the ‘Chiringuito’.” 134
A plan for sunny success
First, let’s look at how the app helps the consumer. Whether you are a Marbella resident or planning a holiday on the Costa del Sol, the app enables you to plan your relaxation time in advance. For example – in the spooky way that websites know visitors’ geographical location these days – when SOCIETY visited BookMySunbed.com to learn more about the app’s capabilities, it presented a selection of local beach clubs and chiringuitos within the Marbella area. As a user it showed the total number of sunbeds available at each beach club with a breakdown
of beds by ‘Standard’, ‘VIP’ and ‘VIP+’ classifications. It also provides a price range for the sunbeds. Importantly, it also gives the user a neat description of the resort and its services, so you have some idea about what to expect when you arrive. All you have to do then is select the date of your visit and the number of sunbeds, and your booking is made! The app informs the resort of the booking and you’re all set for a relaxing day out, knowing that when you arrive, you won’t have to start searching among the rows of sunbeds for a suitable space – yours are already reserved and in a position of your choice.
Each resort is provided with a customised dashboard that allows it to manage, monitor and take sunbed reservations in real-time from customers all around the world via the BookMySunbed app In effect, it’s the same process as booking a seat on a plane or at the theatre: the app shows you a layout of the sunbed positions in relation to the resort’s other amenities and you select what you want from the spaces that are still available. And if you don’t see what you want on the date you’ve chosen, you can simply check the sunbed availability on another day to book the perfect sunbed location. Basically the
app gives you the ability to plan ahead and play around with your plans until you create the perfect beach itinerary. Furthermore, the app sends
the user a reminder the day before, so you know that your bed is waiting for you and exactly where it is! And there’s more!
Discover exciting new beach resorts
When you arrive at a holiday destination you can waste a lot of time searching for the best beach clubs and seeking recommendations. BookMySunbed provides this information for you and removes the hassle, allowing you to review the resorts in and around where you’re staying. Plus, you can do all this ahead of your holiday, which leaves more time for relaxation when you arrive. It’s the only app that enables you to do this and it promises to streamline your leisure time and make the world’s beach resorts more attractive for locals and visiting clientele. This brings us to the benefits of the app for the beach resorts.
Beach Clubs and Chiringuitos - Get listed!
The opportunity for Marbella’s beach clubs, resorts and chiringuitos to be listed on BookMySunbed and attract more customers is available right now – with the upcoming summer season in Marbella set to be one of the busiest in recent years, this is the perfect app to ensure that customers have a great time thanks to the streamlined booking service the app provides. By subscribing to BookMySunbed, your resort can create a customised beach deck layout, with the app’s drag and drop editor. So, for the first time, guests can choose their sunbed of choice from a plan devised by the resort that best serves the logistics of providing an excellent service to guests. Plus, each resort is provided with a customised dashboard that allows it to manage, monitor and take sunbed reservations in real-time from customers all around the world via the BookMySunbed app – this enables resorts to meet, greet and check-in customers each day without confusion. From a marketing perspective, it also provides a means of getting customer feedback that is vital for improving service delivery and the perception of your ‘brand’. It also allows the resorts to capture customer data and communicate with them through social media and mailers about special offers, new menus and all those things that build customer brand loyalty. Plus, the app makes it possible for smaller chiringuitos to compete with the bigger boys and attract more visitors. The team at BookMySunbed are constantly adding new resorts to the app’s directory to make this a truly comprehensive and valued service. From the perspective of Marbella residents and resorts, it’s undoubtedly one of the most useful apps available. So, download the app now and start booking – you’ll never have to ‘throw in the towel’ over a sunbed ever again!

Línea Directa HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane.
APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout
IEnter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout.
TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes.
CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD)
We hope the information provided in this article is of interest.
Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout.

is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT

ANOTHER “A CUATRO MANOS” SUCCESS FOR PUENTE ROMANO AND DANI GARCIA
L
ast month, Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa Marbella and Restaurante Dani García hosted the third annual “A Cuatro Manos” event. Over four nights, a stellar line-up of chefs came together to create four mind- blowing dinners that not only represented the very best cooking in the country but also showcased the incredible produce that Spain is known for. This celebration brought together a total of eighteen incredible Michelinstarred Spanish chefs, and from further afield Daniel Humm from New York and Sebastian Frank from Berlin. Another very special guest in the line-up was Joan Roca from El Celler de Can Roca, currently rated the number one restaurant in the world. The opening night featured a tribute to French chef Joël Robuchon, and guest of honour for the occasion, who has earned 28 Michelin stars during his career; the highest number of any chef worldwide. In previous year’s “A Cuatro Manos” has paid tribute to one of Spain’s, and the world’s, most creative chefs, Ferrán Adriá, who was

also a guest on the first night. On the second night, Andalucian chefs Dani García, Angel Leon and Paco Morales collaborated to produce an “Unplugged” dining experience in which they showcased local products and the art of cooking without the aid of modern gadgets. The third night saw Dani García and Daniel Humm of Eleven Madison Park, NYC team up and on the final evening, Dani García was joined by Sebastian Frank of Horvath in Berlin. This event continues to be one of the culinary highlights of the Marbella year and has captured the imagination of gastronomes and food lovers alike. We look forward to next year!
The Butterfly Children Golf & Ball is supported by professional golfer Miguel Angel Jiménez who, every year, donates a unique piece of golfing memorabilia to be auctioned during the gala dinner, as well as many other luxury golf items and prizes. Children who suffer from Epidermolysis Bullosa have skin so fragile that it has been compared to the wings of a butterfly, which means that the gentlest touch can cause blistering; the condition has also been known to result in damage to internal organs. To make a reservation for either of these events, please contact: butterflychildren@debra.es, +34 952 816 434 or visit the website at butterflychildrencharity.com
