PUBLISHER’S LETTER
May is definitely one of our favourite months at SOCIETY Towers!
T
he beach clubs are opening, the sun is shining, we get to wear fewer clothes – what’s not to love?
For millions of music fans, this is the beginning of the festival season and, so that you don’t miss any of the fun, we have compiled a guide to the best of the festivals. Benicássim is always one of the most high profile in Europe and this year’s bash is no exception – with acts like Bastille and Florence and the Machine on the bill you can be sure that people from all over Spain will be hotfooting it to the east coast in July. Our cover feature this month concerns the extraordinary life and scarcely less incredible career of Peter Dinklage. We’re all major Game Of Thrones fans and know that many of you are too, so this seemed like a good way to draw attention to the fifth season of this fantastically popular and successful series. At the heart of it is Dinklage’s performance as Tyrion Lannister and he will no doubt be winning a few more fans in this latest outing as the imp with the attitude. Our cover feature has been written by Bradley Mac, whose sister Rosie co-founded MAC Models with us. This extraordinary 18 year-old is not only the body double for Emilia Clarke in Game Of Thrones but is also the force behind our new model agency. Unbelievably, Rosie already has years of experience as an actress and model under her belt and is now passing her knowledge on to the next wave of models. Read all about MAC Models and Rosie on page 54. On a more artistic front we also have plenty to read about: Nimrod Messeg’s amazing iron sculptures have to be seen to be believed, so we
sent our photographer round to capture some images of his beautiful designs. We also met up with Gibraltar’s former Minister of Education, Youth Affairs and Culture, Joe Moss, whose recently published first novel uses Chile’s Atacama Desert as the backdrop for some very atmospheric horror. Do you want to make the most of the weather when dining out? This month we feature two terrific venues in our food pages: Top Thai has done wonders with the concept of street food, which is so popular in Thailand and looks set to have a very busy season with diners wishing to recreate that Far East experience in Marbella. We also love The Beach House’s mixture of informal chiringuito and elegant dining. Do you know that it’s quite usual for customers to arrive for breakfast and still be sitting there long after they have finished dinner? With a great beachside location and terrific food, it’s not surprising that this Elviria venue has built an army of fervent admirers. Fortunately for all you ladies who obsess about your summer ‘look’ Lisa Mayne is on hand to offer some advice. I don’t know much about these type of things, but Lisa assures me that this season Elegant Grunge is the way to go. Lisa is an expert in her field and has some tips that can help you to achieve the ultimate summer look. And, of course, there are the parties and events – we love keeping up with what our advertisers and readers are getting up to and, with the summer party season just around the corner you really need to keep an eye on our Who’s In Who’s Out pages; you never know who you might see! Until next time... Andy Clark

THE
RISE OF
Peter Dinklage By Bradley Mac
This larger than life character has risen to superstar status over the past few years, starring in the nation’s favourite series, Game Of Thrones. There is no doubt that Dinklage has had to
18
overcome some challenges: SOCIETY Marbella takes a look at this actor’s life and meteoric rise to fame and finds out how he did it.
CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT As Peter Dinklage currently enjoys immense fame and success in hit TV series Game of Thrones, we discover that life hasn’t always been easy for the US actor.
L
ife for Peter Dinklage is nothing to complain about: happy marriage, house in the mountains and his almost overwhelming talent, capturing the world’s heart playing that cunning little imp, Tyrion Lannister and overcoming the hurdles set for him in the industry. He has cunningly avoided comic roles, though he does not acknowledge this: “I triumphed because I’m odd.” From a young age he was expected not to let his condition affect him. His parents made the decision never to move anything from high shelves in the house, expecting him to get on with it and that’s exactly what he always did. The Dink’s larger than life character that we see on the screen is matched by his everyday persona. The four foot five inch actor was born in Morristown, New Jersey on June 11, 1969 to Diane, an elementary school music teacher and John Carl, a retired insurance salesman. He was born with achondroplasia, which is a common cause of dwarfism where the body is perfectly formed but the long bones in the arms and legs, those that are modelled in cartilage, don’t grow properly. Dinklage is of German, English and Irish descent, and is related to the German Westphalia noble family “von Dincklage.” You could say his acting career started in high school at the age of 13. In order to survive to social ridicule the young Dinklage created an alter ego for himself - William Boroughs - and developed the ego to match. Dinklage then attended Bennington College, where he majored in drama. He was happier there, but started to experience panic attacks. He had too much pride to seek any help for them, and they eventually went away. “I should have seen a shrink,” he says. He filled his college years well, however: “I smoked too much pot, stayed up too late, did a lot of plays, listened to a lot of Pixies and Dinosaur Jr.” “I hate that word - ‘lucky’. It cheapens a lot of hard work. Living in Brooklyn in an apartment without any heat and paying for dinner at the bodega with dimes - I don’t think I felt myself lucky back then. Doing plays for 50 bucks and trying to be true to myself as an artist and turning down commercials where they wanted a leprechaun. Saying I was lucky negates the hard work I put in and spits on that guy

”
who’s freezing his ass off back in Brooklyn. So I won’t say I’m lucky. I’m fortunate enough to find or attract very talented people. For some reason I found them and they found me.” He used to turn down a lot of roles when he was just starting in the acting world, refusing to take any parts that used his height as a source of laughter and mockery, meaning he turned down anything that required him to dress up as an elf or leprechaun. “Dwarves are still the butt of jokes. It’s one of the last bastions of acceptable prejudice...by media, everything,” he told The New York Times. He added that actors who happen to be dwarves can do their part to change that. “You can say no. You cannot be the object of ridicule.” Following his graduation the Jersey-born actor essentially bootstrapped his career, living as a self-described starving artist for years before reaching his Game Of Thrones success. While he had only a small part, Dinklage made an impressive debut in the 1995 parody of the independent film world, Living in Oblivion. He played a dwarf hired for a dream sequence who loses his temper with the film’s director (played by Steve Buscemi). The following year, Dinklage landed a role in an off-Broadway play, The Killing Act, written by Tom McCarthy. He played an over-the-top Tom Thumb in the show. Dinklage and McCarthy reunited for the hit independent drama The Station Agent (2003). In the film, he played a lonely, train-obsessed man who inherits a rundown train depot. His character befriends a food cart vendor (Bobby Cannavale) and becomes involved with a widowed
artist (Patricia Clarkson). The film received a warm welcome at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was bought by Miramax. Dinklage’s performance also enthralled critics, with one heralded his work as, “warm, heartbreaking and hilarious”. Dinklage’s most significant television work, however, came in 2011 with the premiere of Game Of Thrones playing Tyrion Lannister, a dwarf of noble birth. For his portrayal of this “good bad guy” Dinklage won an Emmy Award in 2011 and a Golden Globe in 2012. He is very enthusiastic about the series, telling The Hollywood Reporter that the show has a “...smart narrative. You’ve got to push the envelope and challenge expectations and ideas of what’s going to happen next. That adds to the addiction of the show - you never know what’s around the corner.” When awarded his Golden Globe back in January, he used the spotlight in a way he hadn’t before, and may never again, telling the audience that he’d been thinking about “...a gentleman - his name is Martin Henderson.” Henderson is a British dwarf who had been badly hurt by a thug in what can only be termed a hate crime. Dinklage had been deeply moved by the reports of the incident. “I feel like Pete is in a position to possibly effect change for the way people look at people his size,” Erica Schmidt, Peter’s wife, tells Rolling Stone magazine. Afterwards, Dinklage declined offers to appear on various talk shows to discuss Henderson (who told the British press he was grateful for the support, but still has yet to meet or speak to Dinklage). “Maybe 20 years ago I would have done all of these shows and ranted and raved,” Dinklage says to Rolling Stone magazine, “but I’m a little bit more at peace with things now and I did what I wanted to do and said what I wanted to say. I have a friend who says the world doesn’t need another angry dwarf.” That one out-ofcharacter moment aside, Dinklage doesn’t necessarily feel a sense of responsibility to other people his size. “I just want to work,” he says. Maybe the most admirable thing about Dinklage is that he hasn’t ever let his size define him as an actor or as a man, and because of that very fact, he is now one of the most famous and successful small people in the world.

ATACAMA By KJ Elsdon
What does the driest place in the world have in common with a bustling, populous British dependency? Well, geographically very little, but thanks to an unsettling novel by Rock resident, Joe Moss, it’s likely that South America’s Atacama Desert and Gibraltar will henceforth be linked in the minds of those who enjoy a sense of place with their horror. KJ Elsdon recently met up with him and found out what inspired him to write his skewed paean to one of the world’s most remote and unspoiled areas.
P
oliticians have a long history of following their time in office with a book or two. There are the diarists (Alan Clark and Tony Benn, for example), the historians (Winston Churchill) and the political biographers (William Hague and Roy Jenkins). Fewer have tried their hand at writing novels, although Benjamin Disraeli very successfully combined a political career with producing various works of fiction, the best known being Sybil. However, until now none have tried their hands at horror. In this, as in many other things, Joe Moss is something of a rarity; from 1988 until 1996 he was Gibraltar’s Minister of Education, Youth Affairs and Culture, the youngest government minister in the world at the time, being only 25 years old on the day of his appointment. Reach back further into his childhood, however, and it becomes clear that Moss has more than paved the way to be a convincing writer of horror. He remembers obsessively reading the famous Armada collections of ghost stories, but by then he had already begun to write his own short stories: “I’m sad that I lost my first collection which dates to when I was three,” he says, with only the faintest trace of a smile. He soon graduated to the more
24
hardcore thrills provided by Dennis Wheatley and H.P. Lovecraft, the latter providing an invaluable guide to the weird and supernatural which continues to inspire him. For a time in the late 1990s he was also a regular contributor to Noize Unlimited, a music magazine published in six languages throughout Europe, in which he was charged with producing pen portraits of characters who had influenced the music scene from Stanley Kubrick to David Lynch. A typical Moss feature was lively, pithy and infused with the author’s characteristically strong opinions.
Writing is clearly important to him, but travel has also become something of an obsession. He visited Antarctica in order to follow in the footsteps of Ernest Shackleton and his boyhood hero, Robert Falcon Scott, but even that desolate place seemed more welcoming than the Atacama Desert. Nonetheless, Atacama had a profound effect on him: “ It’s the most alien and remote place I have been to on Earth. Some of the scenery resembles Mars in fact. Being there I was just bowled over by the look of the place and how easy it would be to kill people there in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways. The place was just crying out for a horror movie to be shot there.” At the time Moss, a relentless selfimprover, was amongst the first wave of students working towards a Master’s degree in Writing for Screen and Stage under the auspices of Regent’s University London, so when he was asked to provide a screenplay for an assignment, it took him only seconds to decide where it should be set. The villain of the piece, however, took a little more research and Moss found himself studying the history of the Incas before the sinister figure of The Swagman, a pitiless psychopath, came to life.
COSTA CUISINE The Entertainment Charts
“The myth of the Sacrificador, which also plays a part in Atacama, is actually a pre-Inca figure although it was probably absorbed into the Inca myths when they conquered the Atacama. I had already done some reading on local history and traditions even before going there and well before I realised I’d be writing about the place. Once there I immersed myself into learning as much as possible about the past and continued reading around the subject after my return,” he said. It is ironic that it is the thoughtless actions of a group of travellers that attracts the attention of The Swagman. They are a believably motley bunch and, if aficionados of cinematic horror are reminded of such classics as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, then Atacama is too knowing a creation for this scenario not to have been taken into consideration. The story, written as a screenplay, might have remained in that format had not Moss encountered a publisher of fantasy fiction via the internet, who asked him if he would consider rewriting the story of The Swagman as a novel, something which he had never intended. Surely this must
have presented more than a few challenges? Moss makes a swivelling ‘more or less’ gesture with his hand to explain the process. “It was both easy and difficult. Easy in that the narrative, the characters, the arena were all there. Difficult in that it was a very visual film and putting these magnificent vistas into words was a challenge.” Fortunately Moss is a past master at setting a scene and even those not acquainted with the Atacama Desert will have no problem with conjuring it in their minds, so coruscating are his descriptive powers. As one enthusiastic Amazon reviewer stated, “Mr. Moss paints a beautiful portrait of an ugly place.” So what’s next? Moss’s interests are varied and range from supporting Arsenal and visiting London’s theatres as much as possible to an obsessive interest in music, history and literature. The fact that he is a voracious reader will be obvious to anyone who dips into Atacama. When pushed he names Emily Brönte’s Wuthering Heights, J.R.R. Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings, The Sea The Sea by Iris Murdoch, William Golding’s The Inheritors, Donna Tartt’s The Secret History and American Psycho by Bret
Easton Ellis as influences but looks displeased when doing so, like a parent tricked into naming one child his favourite. Happily resident in Gibraltar, but still keen to travel whenever his writing commitments permit, Moss might consider taking a leaf out of H.G. Wells’s book and inventing a time machine to experience the location of his next project, a screenplay about the life of Julian the Apostate, which he has been researching and planning for several years. “I’ve been working on a sitcom too!” Joe laughs. “I’m very interested in comedy, but it’s demanding. I don’t know what will happen next, but in the meantime I feel lucky to be able to keep doing what I most enjoy.”
Atacama is published by Luthando Coeur, an imprint of The Zharmae Publishing Press and is available via amazon.co.uk and barnesandnoble.com

Guilty P leasure Crushes Justin Bieber
It’s just about become acceptable for us to publicise this particular crush. Yes, it was all a bit weird when Beiber was singing lyrics like “my first love broke my heart for the first time” at age 13 and we lulled ourselves into believing he was speaking to us directly – you didn’t think that?! Now he’s entered his twenties, we can shout it from the rooftops - yes part of us does fancy the child star, even if he is an idiot.
Joey Essex
Is it wrong to have a crush on somebody who doesn’t know Wales is located in the UK? Yes, it probably is, but we just can’t help it. There’s something incredibly endearing about the former TOWIE star Joey Essex and no one can deny that he’s an attractive looking guy. We couldn’t guarantee he could keep you captivated with his wealth of general knowledge for the rest of your life but he is reem isn’t he?
Ed Sheeran
From his scruffy hair to his baggy t-shirts, everything is telling us it’s wrong to fancy the 24-year-old singer-songwriter, but what can we say – we just do. Maybe it’s his beautifully penned lyrics or the way he strums that guitar, there’s just something about him. We’re clearly not the only ones who suffer from this inexplicable crush, Taylor Swift has been inseparable from Sheeran for the last year or so, with the pair even releasing a love song together.
26
Tom Daly
Hearts were broken when Olympic swimmer Tom Daly shed light on his sexuality via a You Tube video clip back in 2014, declaring, “I’m a gay man now.” Despite the revelation, we still fancy him. With his trim body and cute boy band looks, what is not to like?
Come on, admit it! Everyone has an embarrassing crush. That one person who, despite all rhyme and reason, gets under your skin and has your heart beating at the very mention of his name. The SOCIETY team is coming clean as we name and shame our
TOP 10 SECRET LUSTS
Boris Johnson
Try as we might, that dodgy blonde barnet and foppish manner of Mayor of London Boris Johnson wins us over every time. Always up for making a fool of himself (whether intentionally or not), we just can’t help but smile whenever the posh politician appears.
Jeremy Clarkson
Everyone loves a bad boy don’t they and, in the light of his recent sacking from the BBC after being involved in a ‘fracas’ with Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon, we feel it was only right to include Clarkson as a guilty pleasure heartthrob. His sharp tongue and dry sense of humour make him quite the character and have helped the 54-year-old to forge a television career spanning several decades.
Peter Andre
There’s something slightly cheesy about popstar-cum-TV personality Peter Andre, but when all is said and done we just can’t shake off the image of him splashing around in the sun in the ‘Mysterious Girl’ video. He is also one of the only people in showbiz who can get away with an orange permatan.
Simon Cowell
There’s no denying it, power and success is very attractive and music mogul Simon Cowell has bucketloads of the stuff. It’s fair to say Cowell has revolutionised television as the creator and godfather of reality talent shows. Whether you love or hate them, TV programmes such as Pop Idol, X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent have generated some major success stories including One Direction and Susan Boyle. Yes he wears his trousers too high but, let’s be honest, we are weirdly fascinated by this guy.
Jimmy Carr He’s everyone’s favourite funny man, presenter of Channel 4’s 8 out of 10 Cats Jimmy Carr is another of our weird crushes. The strangest thing about the comedian is his bizarre laugh, which quite honestly needs to be heard to be believed. The closest thing we can compare it to is the sound of a seagull squawking. Yes, exactly - very odd indeed.
P rince William
The Prince has captivated the hearts of every female in the UK and arguably the rest of the world, from old grannies to the youngest of girls – everyone loves the 32-year-old royal. He’s not classically good looking but his compassion, charitable pursuits and good sense of humour have found him a place on our lust list.

Love FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
the skin You’re in
By Bettina Campolucci
W
hat you put IN your body is as important as what you put ON your body. Considering most of us have some kind of skincare regime and use a lot of beauty products, not many of us consider what is in them and how they affect us.
Skin covers all body surfaces. The purpose of our skin is to protect against injury, infection, heat, cold, and to store water, fat and vitamins. Did you know that skin is rejuvenated about once every four weeks? Thinking of your skin as an organ, rather than something that we can use and

abuse, puts things in proper perspective. Your skin is a wonderfully resilient organ and, for the most part, can survive virtually any form of punishment. The skin is the body’s boundary, tough enough to resist all sorts of environmental attacks, yet sensitive enough to feel a breeze. The skin also secretes fluids that lubricates and barricades it from toxic substances.
Here are my tips for taking care of the skin you’re in.
1. Coconut oil * It’s a fantastic moisturiser for the face, body and hair. * Helps the immune system to fight off viruses and fungus (when consumed and also when applied externally). * Normalises hormone, thyroid, and bloodsugar levels; it also increases metabolism and overall energy.
2. Skin Cleansing * When you wake up the BIGGEST mistake to make is to wash your face with tonics, soaps and cleansers. Your body has naturally created an oily protective layer during the night that will nourish and keep your skin satisfied throughout the day. * When the skin is stripped of its natural fatty layer, it will become either overly dry or overly oily, as it tries to compensate for a lack of moisture by producing more oil. That why some of us get caught up in skincare regimes that we can’t get out of because we have made our skin dependant on products we think will help. * My Recommended Morning Skincare Regime: First of all choose a flower water that you like (my favourite is rose) then an essential oil (it’s important to like the smell) - I love orange and keep some good quality coconut oil in a jar. * Start off by spraying or sprinkling some rose water onto your face then warm up some essential oil and coconut oil with your hands before lightly applying it to the face like you would a moisturiser.

3. Perfumes
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
* Perfumes are not so good for your health - or your wallet. Sense of smell is heightened when you move over to a cleaner way of eating. * I have personally stopped using conventional perfumes as their smell irritates me. * Instead I use essential oils (in small amounts). My all-time favourite natural perfume is called Sharini. They are made in small batches, are hand-picked and contain no artificial substances whatsoever.
4. Body Brushing & Exfoliating * Listen up! Dry body brushing helps shed dead skin cells (and encourages new cell renewal) which results in smoother and brighter skin. * It assists in improving vascular blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. * By releasing toxins, you get rid of toxic waste so the body is able to run more effectively. * Dry skin brushing rejuvenates the nervous system by stimulating nerve endings in the skin and it feels pretty great, too! * It helps your skin to absorb nutrients by eliminating clogged pores. and, in my experience, making your own body scrub and using it to get rid of dry old skin is doing something kind to yourself. It sets you up for a nice day and makes you generally feel better.
Make Your Own
Body Scrub * Glass container for storage * 1/4 cup of sugar - I like using brown sugar * 1/4 cup of ground coffee * 1 cup approximately virgin organic coconut oil * 1 capsule Vitamin E (optional)
Method:
Mix all above ingredients - add more or less if necessary. I would suggest wetting your skin a bit first to open up your pores and then massage the scrub into the skin. Let it sit for five to 10 minutes to allow the caffeine and coconut oil to absorb properly into your skin. Rinse off with warm water in the shower and bathe as you would normally. Feel hot, sexy and clean the right way.

FREE THE MIND at
SINERGIA PILATES SINERGIA PILATES will open its doors at the end of this month in Estepona and hopes to welcome you all to see what’s going on. Enjoy a delicious fresh fruit juice in our cosy lounge area while chatting to friends and starting your day full of vitality. We need to make different choices and decisions about how we exercise. Some go to the gym, others prefer outdoor sport and there are those who look for mind and body balance, especially found in those activities that focus on improving flexibility and strength throughout the body, without creating volume and physical strength. That’s what Pilates is all about - the belief that movement heals and that the quality of human life is appreciably better when the physical training and mental condition of the person are optimally balanced. Pilates dates back to 1920 and is named after a German, Joseph Pilates, who was a nurse in England during World War II. He designed a device to rehabilitate immobilised patients by fitting stretchers with springs. Following this, he realized that those who practised yoga had elasticity, but lacked muscle power and those who favoured weights had plenty of power and muscle mass, but lacked elasticity.
36
Thus began the Pilates method, strengthening muscles while also developing greater flexibility. The basic principle of Pilates is to raise awareness of your body as an integrated unit, while posture and breathing is improved and movement is given greater efficiency. SINERGIA Pilates’s philosophy is to integrate customers into healthy habits such as physical exercise and free the mind in order to improve quality of life through exercises based on the Pilates method: suspension training (TRX), physiotherapy, yoga and relaxation. SINERGIA PILATES offers:
1
Pilates for all: pregnancy, children, seniors, sportsmen, golfers, anyone who wants or needs to improve their body skills and conditions.
2 3 4
Any level is welcome, from beginners to advance. Exercise on Mat, Reformer, Barrel, TRX, Yoga.

Find DIY updos tricky? Luckily the elegant grunge do embraces the fallenout straggly bits. Tease up the top for extra height and pin into a messy bun or chignon. There is no need to worry about how messy the final outcome is.
This low maintenance look is dangerously sexy and so easy to do, think the morning after the night before – it’s the ultimate lazy girl makeup. Opt for a cream or gel like eye shadow to create shine and remember girls the messier the better.

Beauty Editor Liza Mayne gives readers a monthly update on all things gorgeous. This month she shows us how to achieve a ‘less is more’ look in a few quick and easy steps.
The easiest way to create slept in eyes is to use a cream eye shadow, as the grease in these products will lead them to crease easily, I love the products available at both MAC and NARS as they smudge and blend to perfection.
Prep hair with John Frieda Luxurious Volume Building Mousse for structure and hold. This product will make it easier to style your hair and make it look less freshly washed! Gather your hair into a low pony, pull out 2cm strands, wrap around your fingers and pin into ponytail.
Pin it securely with some bobbie pins then run your hands through it to loosen it out and pull any wispy bits free.

hints and tips on everything from how to ace a casting to marketing yourself via social media channels such as Facebook and Instagram.
Numerous models from the MAC Masterclasses have gone on to cause a real stir in the industry, securing high profile jobs and coverage in the best magazine titles. Cerys has been flown over to London for a casting with IMG Models in the UK, Nifa and Luna were selected to participate in a campaign sponsored by Olympus and many other students have been chosen to model at the Confeti Wedding Show onboard the luxury floating yacht hotel Sunborn Gibraltar. Rosie Mac has landed the job of
Emilia Clarke’s body double in the massively popular Game Of Thrones series, playing a stand-in for Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen. Although just 18 years old, Rosie has a whole wealth of experience as a model and actress already under her belt and her hands-on approach to the MAC Models Masterclasses means that girls are benefiting from her industry know-how. She attends each of the classes and gives students
Speaking to students from the course, they all agree that Rosie has made a major contribution to developing their understanding of the modelling industry as well as making the classes more fun and enjoyable. Whether they are parading behind Rosie up and down a fake ‘catwalk’ or letting their hair down and dancing around the studio with her, all girls agree that the classes are a place whereby you are not judged or made to feel selfconscious, but encouraged to let down your barriers and have a blast - while soaking up knowledge and expertise, of course. We are also delighted that Rosie’s brother, Bradley, has contributed our Celebrity Spotlight feature this month all about his sister’s fellow Game Of Thrones co-star, Peter Dinklage who plays the role of Tyrian Lannister in the series. We thought Bradley was best placed to write some editorial on our cover star for this month with his sister’s connection to the show and it makes for a fascinating read. MAC Models is already making a name for itself, with its motivating masterclass sessions and the impressive modelling talent already signed up to the agency, the sky really is the limit. 76
TORQUE TALK
Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the BMW X6 M
77
TORQUE TALK
T
he new X6 M (mostly) defies the laws of physics
The first generation X6 M was launched in 2009 at Road Atlanta, the challenging circuit in Georgia where the gruelling 10-hour long Petit Le Mans race is held. BMW chose to launch its successor at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, where the US round of the F1 Championship takes place. Designed by HKS, Inc. and Tilke Engineers & Architects, the Circuit of the Americas is 3.427-miles (5.515 km) long with 20 corners, and gave the X6 M the chance to show its mettle as a credible alternative to a high performance saloon like the M5. This track has a 41-m elevation change across its length, so is nothing like as daunting in this respect as the classic Nurburbring and Spa, or newer circuits like Portimao and Bilster Burg. Being a Tilke-designed track, it is quite technical, but the second half shares a lot of features with other circuits on the F1 calendar. Rocketing out of the pit lane, the big blue X6 M Sports Activity Coupe had impressed by the time the first half dozen corners had passed under its big 21-inch wheels. With a display of agility that belied its 2,265kg bulk, the big car turned in crisply to the slow bend at the end of the pit straight under trail braking, and then took full throttle with unerring stability in third and fourth gears as we plummeted through the descending right-hand sweeper. The trickiest part of the track proved to be the tightish left-right-left sequence of turns seven, eight and nine. Unlike the downhill S’s at the start of the Nurburgring, which features bends of similar radii that allow you to build up a rhythm, each of these turns has a unique radius and entry line. This is less friendly to a big heavy machine that inherently does not change direction as well as a small and nimble race car. Unlike its ML63 AMG and Porsche Cayenne Turbo rivals, the X6 M runs in rear-wheel-drive only until the sensors and the computers that look after the chassis behaviour decide that there is enough slip to warrant engaging drive to the front wheels.
78
TORQUE TALK
Markus explained that his team went through the suspension with a fine-tooth comb and revised almost every component. “The basic design was fine, but technology and our knowledge had moved on and we were able to refine the system component by component, and as a whole.
79
TORQUE TALK
Running first in MDM mode and then MDM2 with DSC minimised, I found the cars handling balance to be quite remarkable for its size, weight and relatively high centre of gravity. But you have to avoid over-driving the car into bends as that overheats the front tyres, resulting in higher tyre pressures and more understeer. The rear-wheel-drive bias meant that I was exiting some of the medium speed bends with power oversteer, with a quick flick of opposite lock being all that was required to bring things back under control. I am not sure if long slides are possible in dry tarmac, but this car promises to be most entertaining on a wet track, or on a frozen lake with studded tyres.
80
On track events, BMW normally has us come through the pit lane on each lap to cool the brakes, but not this time. Looking through the spokes of the optional 21-inch alloys fitted to the launch cars, you have a clear view of the front brakes with their huge compound vented discs and blue painted BMW M six-pot brake calipers. These new brakes have a 50-percent greater pad area than before, while being 1.6 kg lighter per corner. To survive the arduous task of stopping two tonnes of SAV from big speeds on this fast circuit, the test cars were fitted with race pads. The combination worked exceedingly well, producing consistently strong retardation, with the brake pedal remaining firm despite continuous flat out laps.
For some reason it took years of complaints from customers and the press alike for BMW M to adopt brakes that both work well and look good, but now things are finally sorted on that score. The TwinPower Turbo V8 motor that provided impressive thrust out of bends and down the straights is a heavily revised version of the 4.4 litre V8 powerhaus introduced in the previous X6 M, and shared with the M5, M6 and X5 M. Now producing 575 hp between 6,000 and 6,500rpm, and 750 Nm of torque from 2,200 to 5,000rpm, this latest incarnation of the ‘hot side inside’ V8 shows a 20 hp and 70 Nm increase in output.
TORQUE TALK
Impressively, this power increase is augmented by a greater than 20-percent lower fuel consumption and emissions. Put another way, with its EU average consumption of 11.1 L/100km, you can now drive 26-percent further (765 km) on a single tank of fuel. Thanks to this stupendous output, the close ratio eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox with paddle shifters, Launch Control and four-wheel-drive, the X6 M leaves the line with real gusto, hitting 100km/h in just 4.2 sec. This is an incredible feat of physics defying for a 2.2 tonne vehicle, and the ease with which it will repeat this time after time means it is a piece of cake to embarrass supercar drivers away from the lights. Only the electronically limited 250 km/h top speed puts a damper on the fun you can have on the autobahn. Thanks to its wider wheels and larger cooling intakes, the X6 M has a Cd of 0.37, compared to 0.36 for the X6 xDrive 50i. Kerb weight is 2,265 kg, which is 80kg more than the X6 xDrive 50i. “The objective for chassis behaviour of the biggest M car is that it should behave predominantly like a RWD vehicle, and that means like a typical BMW,” explained Markus Gratzl, Head of Engineering for Chassis and Powertrain and Electric/Electronics for BMW M. “Only if you lose traction at the rear will the front axle assume some of the drive load and help you to stabilise the car.” The rear-wheeldrive handling bias also gives the X6 M the opportunity to display mild power oversteer, a trait not usually associated with a big 4x4. “The chassis set-up involves various elements that work together,” Markus continued. “These are the rear air springs and dampers, self-levelling
81
TORQUE TALK system, active anti-roll bars, torque vectoring and DSC.” All these chassis aid system require high-speed data transmission, which is facilitated by FlexRay. In fact the previous generation X5 and X6 were the first vehicles ever to use the FlexRay system.
Markus explained that his team went through the suspension with a fine-tooth comb and revised almost every component. “The basic design was fine, but technology and our knowledge had moved on and we were able to refine the system component by component, and as a whole.”
The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheeldrive system uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to separate the driven axles. If the system judges that the front axle’s participation is required, 50-percent of the engine torque can be transmitted there.
The original X6 had a torsional stiffness of 29,500 Nm/degree, which is quite remarkable for any hatchback vehicle, and particularly so for one of this size. The new car is very slightly stiffer and so provides a great basis for good handling.
This would happen if for instance, the car were being driven uphill on snow. However, if the rear wheels were on ice and found no grip, 100-percent of the power could be sent to the front wheels, and the same is true in reverse.
The latest generation of X5 and X6 share a new double wishbone front axle design, which is a good starting point. The M version has a 10mm lower ride height, the and Self-Levelling Air suspension at the rear, Active Anti-
roll Bars and Torque Vectoring, which are normally options on the stock X6 are standard on the M version, with specific calibration for its greater performance. The chassis engineers established that a bit more front-end negative camber was required for better turn-in and stability in fast cornering. So where the standard X6 has between 0 and 20’ of negative camber, the X6 M runs between 20’ and 40’. To achieve this, the engineers designed a 3.0mm shorter upper wishbone that mounts to the existing pickup points. Meanwhile, all the front axle bushes are stiffer and the engine mounts are solid and stiffer. The rear bushing of the front lower wishbone was 30-percent stiffer than standard on the previous generation X6 M. The equivalent bushing on the new car is
The new X6 M is a very complete car with great practical qualities that make it a good family car. Yet when you want to have some fun, it is fast and capable enough to give a good account of itself around a racetrack.

you switch everything to Comfort mode, although I personally prefer to leave the engine and gearbox in Sport.
On the subject of steering, the bespoke M Servotronic electric power steering features a quicker steering ratio of 1.25 turns to full lock in each direction from the centre point, compared to 1.5 turns for the standard car. The driver can also choose from Comfort, Sport and Sport+ settings to adjust the steering characteristics and store them under preferred settings in the M Drive button system.
BMW and its tyre suppliers, specifically Michelin and Pirelli in this instance, went to great lengths to match their rubber to the suspension. Pirelli supply the 20-inch tyres and Michelin takes care of the 21-inch sizes. The BMW specific Michelin tyres carry an identifying * on their sidewalls. The wheel and tyres sizes are 10.0J and 11.5J x 20-inch with 285/40ZR20 and 325/35ZR20 Pirelli PZero rubber. For the 21-inch fitment, the lightweight forged alloy wheels are 10.0J and 11.5J x 21 with 285/35ZR21 and 325/30ZR21 Michelin Pilot Super Sport UHP tyres. Back on the road, the new BMW X6 M plays the role of calm and composed long distance cruiser with great aplomb. It is very comfortable when
The only downside might be for people who wish to carry bulky objects in the rear, when the plunging Coupe roofline becomes a liability. But that of course, is where the boxier X5 M comes into its own.
On the rear axle, polyurethane washers are used under the bolts that attach the subframe to the body-in-white. These help to minimise any movement of the axle under high lateral and longitudinal loading. All these mechanical differences significantly
Other than that, the new X6 M is a very complete car with great practical qualities that make it a good family car. Yet when you want to have some fun, it is fast and capable enough to give a good account of itself around a racetrack. The X6 M is a good all rounder for sure, and another rolling tribute to the talent of the engineers at BMW M GmbH.

HIDDEN GEMS
of
SPAIN We are all well aware of the Gaudí wonders of Barcelona, the fiery flamenco roots of Seville and Granada’s majestic Alhambra Palace, but Spain is host to a whole array of historical and culture sights that are much less known. Part of their beauty lies in the fact that they remain off the well-trodden tourist circuit but it’s time that these places step into the spotlight for just a fleeting moment, as they are simply too beautiful to stay hidden.
1
Piste Off to Sierra Nevada
Forget the snowy peaks of the Alps or Pyrenees and opt for a mini break in the dramatic Sierra Nevada, situated just over three hours drive from the sunny Costa. Skiing is notoriously costly, but you can cut out the price of flights, since this mountain range is located right on our doorstep. Marbella Club’s El Lodge was the place to stay until a fire unfortunately broke out at the luxury ski hotel over a year ago. Our top tip is to rent a large self-catering ski cabin and go as a group, splitting the accommodation between you. Obviously, this is a jaunt for the winter months; the best time to visit is January and February.

2
Step into the Fairytale Village of Pedraza
Located in the province of Segovia within Castile and Leon, Pedraza is one of Spain’s most beautiful walled Medieval villages. Although it is found just a one hour drive from Madrid, this enchanting community could not be further removed from the hustle and bustle of the Spanish capital. Guests are asked to leave their cars outside the village boundaries so once you step inside the walls of Pedraza it feels very much like you have stepped back in time. A serving of the region’s traditional suckling pig with crispy skin is a must while you’re in Pedraza. Try La Olma or El Corral de Joaquina, as both have lovely outdoor terraces.
If you can, the best time to visit Pedraza is surely the first and/or second Saturday of July when the village celebrates the beautiful Candlelight Concerts. The village becomes even more magical as the whole place is lit by thousands of candles while orchestras play at various locations such as the Plaza Mayor and castle courtyard. What a way to spend a balmy summer evening!

Córdoba – the Melting Pot of Muslim, Christian and Jewish Culture
Many cities within Andalucía are renowned for their glorious histories, which hark back to the 16th century ‘Edad de oro’ or Golden Age, and invite hordes of visitors to explore their impressive landmarks every year. Córdoba however is much lesserknown despite its impressive Mezquita and other architectural marvels. The city is a unique combination of Spanish and Islamic influences with the Great Mosque of Córdoba at its heart. The winding streets of the Juderia (Jewish Quarter) stretch out from this grand religious temple into various plazas, for which Andalucía is famed.
The best time to visit Córdoba is April to June when the Spanish sun is not too hot, yet you will still be afforded cloudless blue skies to see the city in all its glory. Also try to visit one of the surrounding bodegas while you are in the area; our pick of the bunch is Bodegas Campos which is one of the city’s most atmospheric wine cellars come restaurant. The bodega produces its own house Montilla – definitely worth a glass - or two!
4
Southern Spain’s Secret Garden
If you’ve had enough of the parties and crowds of the Coast, head east from Málaga to Las Alpujarras and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Here you will find a tranquil and, as yet, unspoilt area of citrus groves and lakes that reflect the peaks of the mountain range above. Its name roughly translates from Arabic to mean ‘sierra of pastures’, since the land is fertile and green in these parts and you can find olive trees, grape plantations and almond trees. There are countless walking routes and many small villages to explore including Trevélez which, at 4,840 feet above sea level, is the highest village in Europe. You couldn’t get further away from the non-stop partying of the Costa del Sol, which is just over an hour away.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR HOME IS DAMAGED BY ATMOSPHERIC PHENOMENON GENERAL WEATHER CONDITIONS IN SPAIN As the climate has warmed globally, some types of extreme weather have become more frequent and severe in recent decades. HAPPY HOSTING!
G
rowing up with two fantastically talented parents in the kitchen, it is not too difficult to work out where my love of entertaining and being the ‘hostess with the mostest’ stems from. Although I could never even try and lie about being as good at this skill as my Mum or Dad, I do like to give it a good go and think I am pretty diverse in the kitchen - as long as I’m in charge! Although our Coast boasts an awesome array of restaurants and options for dining out, when one lives here, sometimes there is nothing better than staying in and having some good old home-cooked grub and not worrying about getting that taxi home. There are rules to hosting and, whether you are after a more casual affair or wanting to go all out, I think there are certain key guidelines to make sure that you are not going to be overwhelmed by what sounded like a great idea last week after a couple of vinos and a conversation about how amazing your lasagne is. One of the most
important rules for any good diningin experience is to wow your guests - and that doesn’t mean seven hours in the kitchen and not having time to straighten your hair before your guests arrive. We have so many more options, living here on our beautiful Coast. With long, warm summer evenings just around the corner I would suggest that now is the perfect opportunity to practise those foolproof, ‘everyone’s going to love them’ recipes, creating that iTunes playlist and getting some dates in the diary. Part of the whole event is making sure your venue (home, sweet home) is looking ship shape and up to scratch and this is as vital an ingredient as the chilled bottle of white in the fridge. Creating the mood and atmosphere that you’re after is essential and will help people feel at home in your home. Soft lighting, fresh flowers, candles, music and plenty of places to sit are all key, so your guests

can natter among themselves while you put the finishing touches to your menu. Another imperative is the presentation of the food; even if you are just planning a BBQ and salads, the delivery is crucial to impressing your visitors. An easy cheat is using stunning crockery - perhaps not a set that you use to serve dinner everyday but something that you bring out for these special occasions - and this does not necessarily mean parting with thousands of Euros on Cartuja de Sevilla. We have stepped away from the classic white bone china sets (although you can never go wrong with this, but you will need to add colour and drama in place mats and other accessories if this is your preference) and a great deal of crockery companies are now creating some fabulously colourful ranges that are particularly eye catching. Sitting down to a beautifully laid table is worth it and a decorative set of matching plates, bowls and serving dishes will establish that you truly are the host with the most well, at least until they try the lasagne!

TOP 10 HOSTING
RULES
1. Start With A Cocktail
A cocktail sets a promising tone. It breaks the ice. It prompts discussions about who will be driving. It puts everyone on notice: this is going to be a good night. The key is to have everything you need (appropriate glassware; ice in bucket; a jug of said cocktail, pre-mixed for quick serving; a shaker nearby and garnishes prepared) on a single tray, ready and waiting before your guests arrive. Mixing drinks is a fun, easy job, perfect for delegating to the non-cooking host/hostess, or any willing guest who walks through the door. If a cocktail sounds like too much work, I’ve never known anyone to turn down champagne, which is always a festive start to the evening.
2. Two Courses, Not Three
Don’t kid yourself; hosting is hard work pre, post and (depending on your guests) sometimes during. Give yourself a small break and simply serve two courses. I don’t know about you, but I simply don’t have enough crockery to serve three courses without some serious dish-washing in between and I can think of better ways to enjoy the evening. Dessert is always easy and only requires, at most, some lastminute assembly. With the main course taken care of, I can sit down at the table completely relaxed, not worrying about the next course.
3. Music
Whether you have a variety of playlists categorised by genre, time of evening and after dinner numbers or just prefer the shuffle button on the iPod, there must be music. Never a truer saying than “music has charms to soothe a savage breast” - it sets the tone and can often become a point of conversation.
4. Menu Planning: Something Old, Something New
Never, never, never attempt an all-new menu. Why run the risk? Why give yourself that added pressure? It is way too stressful. Stick to what you know or at least make sure that you are serving a few tried and tested favourites. If you do want to add a new addition, this is best done with the canapés or hors d’oeuvres where, if one doesn’t work, bin it and you will still have something to serve.

Remember to ask the guests about their food requirements. It is not wise to serve a vegetarian a juicy steak or slave over an almond tart for your friend with the nut allergy, so do ask. It is hard to cater for everyone, especially picky eaters, so please don’t try. If you are starting to panic about the menu, try choosing a theme: Italian, Mexican, retro, French - this will guide you and streamline your choices of what to prepare.
5. Use Your Best
Table dressing is 50 per cent of the presentation of the food, so dress your table for the occasion. Whether you want to add lots of colour or stick to pastel tones and soft patterns, the table is going to impress before the food does.
6. Flowers
There must be flowers or something to decorate the centre - candles are also a winner and can be used to light the evening if you are trying to set a more intimate tone. Nothing so tall that people have to crane their necks to see one another, just a little something to make it special.
7. Start On Empty
Always start the night with an empty dishwasher and an empty bin - it will make things 10 times easier when cleaning up, whether that is the same night, or the next day.
8. Get Yourself Ready First
Not one to follow my own rules, I often find myself opening the door to guests in slippers with a tea towel over my shoulder, but don’t let this happen to you. Get ready first, perhaps just skipping the final touches like the lip-gloss and earrings until you are nearly there. If you open the door ready, the guests will feel like you are in control and will immediately relax more. Nobody will care if the appetisers take five more minutes – I promise!
9. After Eight
Yes, these chocolates never fail but planning what will happen after dinner is a great little tip. Admittedly, with our eating hours, it may be a fair few hours after 8pm but having something planned after dinner is wrapped up allows people to digest their meal and enjoy the rest of the evening. Whether it is cards, darts or a walk on the beach, something to finish the evening off makes people remember a good night.
10. Smile and Enjoy Yourself
A smile, a genuine and enthusiastic welcome, a cocktail or two, some food, and a host(ess) who is enjoying him/herself. That is all it really takes for a great night. Remember to breathe and - if all fails and you burn down the kitchen - there’s always home delivery!

NIMROD MESSEG
Thawing the Stony
heart of
iron By Amber O’Shaughnessy
A
rt is highly subjective and two people rarely share exactly the same thoughts and feelings about a painting or sketch. This changes slightly however when an artist takes something typically perceived as ugly and industrial and transforms it into a work of beauty. Nimrod Messeg is one of the few artists who does not start with a blank canvas. His creations begin as the heaviest, darkest piece of metal - iron, most specifically – and, using unique and innovative forging techniques, he brings about a total metamorphosis of his subject matter. The many visitors to his studio located in Marbella and exhibitions are all enamoured by the sculptures on display and especially, the way in which Nimrod manages to breathe life into the most stonehearted of elements.
112
From designing everyday objects like bannisters, Nimrod announces that he has shifted his focus and is now concentrating solely on the creation of sculptures: “This is what I like better,” he says. “This is where my passion lies. As my business became more established, I found that it was my sculptures that took off, so it would be crazy not to take advantage of their popularity to develop that side of my creativity.” The process that is used by Nimrod and his assistant, with whom he has worked for the past 12 years, he describes with a smile as, “Direct! It’s very different from the technique used by most other metal artists. It means that I work directly with the iron, moulding and welding it with a plasma torch and my welding tools. I also forge the metal in

A typical day at Messeg studio involves Nimrod working on several pieces at once, a process that most would find more than a bit of a challenge, but it is something that this imaginative artist relishes. “Each idea tends to change as I work. The material is so hard and so heavy that, as soon as I begin to work on it, it tends to find its own shape. I can honestly say that no day is the same and that’s the way I prefer it.” Nimrod’s Marbella gallery and workshop not only provides an inspiring working environment, but is also a permanent space where visitors can view and enjoy the artistic output of this extraordinarily talented sculptor. Extending across several levels, the studio is a tranquil, cool place to escape the hot sunshine and soak up Nimrod’s artistic talents. Furthermore, if you have a specific brief or particular look in mind, Nimrod is available to meet with you individually to discuss your requirements in greater detail.
“The challenge is to take a material seemingly as solid and unforgiving as iron and, in shaping it, to give it movement and character and to bring it to life...” the studio and work it into shape with the help of an anvil.” All of this physical work not only ensures that Nimrod stays in shape but it also helps the creative process: “For me the challenge is to take a material seemingly as solid and unforgiving as iron and, in shaping it, to give it movement and character and to bring it to life. It’s actually quite a high risk strategy – you should see all the sparks flying when I’m welding!” Nimrod gathers his idea from the world around him saying “I live in the mountains and travel widely and this inspires me.” His childhood experiences have also fuelled his art – from the age of 10 he has been using sculpture to capture his environment, so it is not at all surprising to learn that both his parents were artists who helped to nurture his talent. “They had a definite philosophy of how an artist is built,” says Nimrod. “We didn’t have a telephone and there was certainly no TV to distract us from developing our creativity.” He claims that he is still developing as an artist - “this is only the beginning!” and creates subconsciously, always following his intuition.

Biznaga
aime Pimentel, a local Málaga sculptor, produced two rather fine sculptures some time ago to commemorate two of Málaga’s most emblematic figures: the Cenachero and the Biznaguero. (He is also responsible, amongst many other fine works, for the charming “Niña de Benalmádena” in the central square of that pueblo, and a monument to the fishermen of Málaga in Madrid)). The Cenachero (never to be confused with a cenicero, which means an ashtray!) is, of course, the ambulant fishmonger who once walked the streets of the city selling his wares; invariably sardines and anchovies. The statue now stands in the Plaza de la Marina next to the underground car park, having previously been found further into the port area. The statue of the Biznaguero has also moved. Previously situated in the Plaza de la Marina, it now adorns the Jardines de Pedro Luis Alonso, adjacent to the rather fine Town Hall. But what is a Biznaguero? Simple! It is somebody who makes and sells Biznagas! And Biznagas are not only sold in the highways and byways of the city, but are themselves commemorated on tiles in and around Málaga city centre, and in the poetry of Malagueño laureats.
116
By Padre Peter
Alvaro García, a leading young Malagueño poet, has even written a volume entitled “Té con biznaga – poets from Málaga in English”, whilst the great Grenadino poet, Federico García Lorca, a lover of Málaga, wrote about gardens in the evening: “En la noche del huerto/ coronadas/ can rosas de papel/ y biznagas”. (The garden at night/ crowned/ with paper roses and biznagas.)
Salvador Rueda is commemorated in the city centre on a plaque containing his lines: Clavadas en penca verde/ Van las biznagas fragrantes/ Cuyas esencias flotantes/ la brisa en sus ondas pierde (The fragrant jasmine on a naked green stalk, whose floating essences lose their waves in the breeze – but it sounds better in Spanish!) The name, like so much in old Andalusia, derives from the Arabic “Bisináqa” which, loosely translated, means a “gift from God”. Its origins are somewhat obscure, but may well have derived from the fact that the Moors were seeking a way of introducing the fragrant smell of jasmine into their houses. This plant flourishes in the balmy climate of Málaga, and was a great favourite of the Moors, who introduced it into the area centuries ago. It is admittedly a rather complicated way of introducing the heady scent of jasmine into your house, and if a Biznaguero asks for anything up to
five euros to sell you one, you have to consider the amount of labour that has gone into its production. Basically, a biznaga is a ball of jasmine petals attached to a long stalk. This stalk comes from a particular thistle, picked earlier in the year and dried. The thistle itself delights in the sonorous name “Ridolfia segetum Moris”, although its friends know it as “false fennel”, “goldspray” or even “toothpick weed”. It has sprays of golden flowers atop thin spikes. The flowers are carefully picked off, and the spikes remain. When dry, these are adorned with the flowers of the jasmine picked before dawn, when they are still closed. When the jasmine flowers open in the sun, they form a ball of sweet scented white flowers. The shape of this ball closely resembles an “echinocactus platyacanthus”, known as a “barrel cactus” to its friends (but, of course!), of which a number of varieties are to be seen in the cactus garden near the library in Benalmádena. When the cactus is in flower, the resemblance becomes obvious. Unlike the biznaga, however, which has a life of two, perhaps three days at the most, the barrel cactus is a hardy plant which is also medically useful in the treatment of such diverse conditions as asthma, angina, alopecia, and dermatitis. It can also be transformed into a refreshing alcoholic drink! In Central America this cactus is also known as a biznaga (although one would be wise not to apply one’s nose too closely; which caveat, of course, does not apply when sniffing a jasmine biznaga!) The plant has also given its name to a small town in Mexico with a population of under a thousand.
Nowadays, because the biznaga is so inextricably linked to the culture and history of Málaga city, one can find biznagas made from all sorts of materials, notably ceramics, and used for all sorts of purposes. Home decoration is one, jewellery is another, and giant biznagas adorn the port end of the Calle Marqués de Larios during the Fería de Málaga, during which the Biznagueros hawk their wares round the city, each plant carefully stuck into a base usually made from a fleshy chumbo (prickly pear) leaf.
But perhaps the greatest (although not the biggest!) example of these “false biznagas” is to be found in the increasingly prestigious Festival de Málaga de Ciné Español. Since 1998 a “Biznaga de Oro” has been awarded to the best Spanish film entered. This is now regarded as the first prize in the festival, and this year was awarded to “Els nens salvatges” by Patricia Ferreira. It carries with it a prize of 60,000€. A number of “Biznaga de Plata” are awarded for categories such as best actor, best actress, best direction, best photography, etcetera. In 2012 Antonio Dechent was given the actor’s award for his performance in “A puerta fria”, whilst Carmina Barrios carried off the actress’s biznaga for her appearance in “Carmina o revienta”. We may not qualify for gold or silver, but we can all enjoy a humble natural biznaga scenting our home!

The sun is in the sky, the temperature is in the 30s and you need to find a place to eat that is right on the beach but offers a little more sophistication than your average chiringuito – where should you go?
T
ake a hint from the SOCIETY team and head straight for Elviria. Not only does this area have some cracking beaches it is also the home of The Beach House, one of the most stylish seaside restaurants in the vicinity of Marbella. Fancy a relaxed lunch with friends within earshot of the Mediterranean, a romantic dinner for two under the stars or a lively night out with colleagues after work at a venue with great live music? At The Beach House you can enjoy all three, not to mention a delicious breakfast or brunch; early risers who want to stock up on a decent meal before arriving at work are in luck. In fact it has been said that some regulars like to eat at The Beach House three times a day and who can blame them? With the cool of the Mediterranean only metres away from the warmest of welcomes, it’s a very tempting proposition. Head Chef, Jeff Mynott, is in charge of the wonderful food at The Beach House, with solid support from Sous Chef, Lukasz Lawniczak. Both Jeff and Lukasz have been part of the team for seven years, while Jeff has held his current job title for the past three years. Clients have become
122
accustomed to their meticulous attention to detail and their ability to plan and construct the imaginative flavour combinations for which The Beach House has rightly become famous. With its ethos of transforming properly sourced, fresh, organic and whenever possible – wild produce into uncomplicated, dynamic, tasty and wholesome meals, The Beach House has built its devoted clientele on a combination of fabulous location and reliably excellent food. With so many restaurants competing for the custom of locals and visitors it always helps to have another string to one’s bow and, in this case, the musical analogy is no accident. The Beach House prides itself on being one of the best venues on the Coast when it comes to live music. For the best party in town make sure that you don’t miss out on the themed events, which are held throughout the year. In the past, guests have danced the night away at Brazilian Samba and Great Gatsby Parties and the legendary Masquerade Duo also performs at The Beach House every Sunday, making this the ideal place to go if you enjoy a party atmosphere.
COSTA CUISINE
Another important part of in-house philosophy is that the team is determined not to rest on its laurels and the menu is constantly being evaluated and upgraded. Favourites can always be found but, given the emphasis on local, organic and wild ingredients, some changes are made to take advantage of seasonal produce. Fans of flavour will just love the Chicken Liver Parfait with Red Onion Marmalade and Homemade Granary Toast; this is everything that anyone could possibly expect of a first course. The flavours are perfectly balanced, the toast is wonderfully crunchy and contrasts with the texture of the chicken liver parfait. This is a complete re-imagining of the classic ‘paté on toast’ starter. We also love the Beach House Beefburger: served with Bacon, Cheese, Gherkin, Caramelised Red Onion and Chunky Chips (they might look sinful but in fact they’re more healthy than skinny American ‘fries’), this is a very upmarket version of an old favourite. You can forget fast food outlets with their prepared and processed meat patties – this dish is made from scratch and is all the tastier for it. The new menu is fantastically varied: you could opt for the familiar with the Beer Battered Cod and Chips with
Pea Purée and Tartare Sauce or enjoy your fish with a bit of a spin. We can recommend the Seafood Spaghetti “Fruits de Mer” with Prawns, Clams, Calamari and Scallops in a Light White Wine Velouté, an outstanding dish which delivers on flavour and is also a feast for the eyes. We don’t like to say this but ordering steak can be a bit of a lottery. Some restaurants nail it every time while others sometimes use beef that can be politely described as ‘chewy’! Fans of a good steak will be pleased to learn that The Beach House is famous for the quality of its steaks and there is a choice of Aged Rib-Eye or Prime Fillet, which is accompanied by Chunky Chips, Asparagus and Béarnaise Sauce. Diners can also add Sauté Prawns and Mushrooms in Garlic Butter for a small charge. Believing that food should appeal to the eyes as well as the taste-buds, the team called in veteran photographer, David Toms, to capture some of the dishes on their latest menu. With a wealth of experience in the fields of wedding, property, landscape and macro food photography, as well as sleek corporate branding, the team behind The Beach House decided that David was the ideal person to show their creations at their best. This fantastic über-chiringuito is open for breakfast every day from 8:30 to
12:30 and lunch from 12:30 to 18:00. It is also open for dinner from Monday to Saturday between the hours of 19:00 to 22:30. If you want to add a touch of sparkle to your summer then just head to The Beach House. We’ll be on one of the tables closest to the beach. PORKING A
out
s the Christian armies of the Reconquista moved steadily throughout the peninsula, gradually bottling up the unregenerate Moors into the kingdom of Granada, the populace left behind in Villanueva, whose churches were adorned with statues of the Virgin balanced precariously on the Moorish crescent in order to demonstrate the ascendency of Christianity, sought by every means possible to prove that they were not of the Islamic faith. They painted their houses in bright colours (a modern example of which may be seen today in Málaga’s Plaza Mayor) and they ate pork. They ate pork in every conceivable manner, and as the only portion of the pig that one cannot eat is the squeal, they developed methods of cooking for everything else. This included the delicious Morcilla, or blood sausage. The history of such sausage actually goes far back beyond the Reconquista, as for centuries pig and sheep blood was reputed to bestow many beneficial properties upon those who consumed it. The Moors themselves ate blood puddings, but these were manufactured from animals other than the pig. (In “The Juniper Tree”, a rather horrific fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, a black pudding is produced from the blood of a stepson by his evil stepmother!) It is still possible to find at Casares a Morcilla de chivo which, as its name suggests, is derived from the blood of goats. But the Reconquista gave pig’s blood an added impetus, and enabled the development of many different varieties. In both Andalusia and Catalonia a variety of white pudding, Morcilla blanca, exists, but as these do not contain blood they are beyond the scope of this present article. (This is true also of the Irish “white pudding” or the French Boudin blanc which, whilst delicious, is also bloodless.)
124
Such sausage is not, of course, confined to Spain, and such “puddings” are to be found throughout Europe, coming in many guises from the firm fat filled links of the British “black pudding”, usually eaten raw or fried, to the softer richer products of Belgium, France, and Germany.
Spanish products, however, demonstrate a far greater variety, and may be boiled or fried, dried or smoked, cold or hot, and consumed with vegetables, as a tapa, or stuffed into pimientos or cabbage leaves. When the pig is killed, either in a slaughter house or at the village matanza, the blood is hastily collected and stirred constantly (otherwise it clots and thins). Ingredients are added, and the mixture is spooned into skins. The method is an old one. In Homer’s Odyssey we read “… as when a man besides a great fire has filled a sausage with fat and blood and turns it this way and that and is very eager to get it quickly roasted”. This procedure is not so far removed from the practice of today, although the preparation is now boiled before being hung up to dry. This forms the basis that various morcillas have in common, but each region has its own additions and speciality. The slaughtering ritual takes place each year on Saint Martin’s Day, the 11th November. This is the reason for the popular saying “A cada cerdo le llega su San Martín”, which translates as “Every pig has its St. Martin’s day”.
COSTA CUISINE
The phrase is used to indicate that wrongdoers will eventually get their comeuppance! In western Asturias the morcilla is known as fiyuela and contains white beans, rice and sugar and, in common with other blood sausages in the north of Spain, it is then smoked to make it last longer. This is usually done over an oak fire, as the wood imparts a delicate flavour. This has to be done carefully and slowly, and can take up to ten days. The fire must be kept as low as possible so that the smoke can penetrate evenly right to the middle. If the smoking is too quick, too hot, or too aggressive, the product will suffer. Asturias also produces Morciella, which is an essential part of the regional fabada bean stew, and which is also smoked and contains onion and paprika. In Castille, rice and nutmeg are added to the blood, and in Aragon onion also makes its appearance.
The historic capital of Castille, Burgos, reputedly produces the finest morcilla in all Spain. This contains rice. The Catalans add bacon, pork rind, nutmeg and pepper to the blood to produce buttifara negra. Extramadura is home to the Iberian Pig (Cerdo Iberico) and produces not only the famous pata negra, a high quality aromatic ham, but also excellent morcillas as a by-product. In Andalusia, the town of Ardales is pre-eminent in the production of morcilla, which contains pimento and various herbs and spices from the Sierra de Ronda. It was with the production of “De Re Coquinaria”(“ On the subject of Cookery”, possibly compiled in the late 4th or early 5th century AD and written in common rather than classical latin, and attributed to an otherwise unknown author, Caelius Apicius) that we find our first historical recipe for blood sausage, where we find chopped hard boiled egg yolks, pine nuts, onions and leeks employed.
Apicius, as today, uses intestines as a container, but when Odysseus finally returned home to Ithaca, Homer has him fighting “around the sausage” for the prize of a pig’s stomach filled with fat and blood offered by King Antinous. The Larousse Gastronomique attributes the invention of the dish to Aphtonite, an ancient Greek cook. It enjoyed a long and honourable history, gracing even the table of King Henry VIII of England, until in the 17th century the black pudding controversy erupted. The debate rumbled on for over a hundred years, with even the great Sir Isaac Newton wading in, claiming that it was forbidden for Christians to eat blood in Acts XV 28-29. That apart, blood sausages can be dangerous. In 1975, whilst watching a Goodies sketch concerning a Scotsman being attacked by a black pudding, Alex Mitchell of King’s Lynn laughed himself to death.

HAS STREET CRED Reviewed by India Baltran Photos by Julia Roder
I
f you are anything like the SOCIETY team you will have spent many happy hours watching travel programmes on TV. We especially like the ones that feature Thailand because, being a greedy bunch, we just love the whole culture of street food that is so prevalent in the Far East and especially in Thailand, where it is possible to eat like a king for an outlay of only a few baht. It’s not just the streets of Bangkok that are fragrant with the smell of cooking food either; go to most places in Thailand and you will be able to eat the tastiest dishes on the planet, 24 hours a day. Britain’s celebrity chefs are big fans of these pavement cooks too and take inspiration from their imaginative way of extracting the maximum flavour from the simplest ingredients. Fancy sampling a bit of this culinary street theatre for yourself? Well, you won’t need to blow your housekeeping budget on a ticket to Chiang Mai, since those clever people at Top Thai have recreated Thailand in Nueva Andalucía’s Centro Plaza. When we visited recently we realised how the aromas of freshly cooked food could act as a major selling point for this creative team; it all smelled delicious and the scents of Thailand added a whole new dimension to what is one of our favourite places. Centro Plaza is a great place to sit and enjoy a drink or two, or even a meal, while enjoying the warm sunshine and, thanks to its elevated position, the great views that reach down to the Mediterranean. We decided to push the boat out and try to be adventurous – if we couldn’t spare the time to visit Bangkok then

we were going to have as authentic an experience as possible on home turf! Our starters consisted of Pho Phia Tod, which fans of Asian cuisine will recognise as Vegetable Spring Rolls. These were served with a delicious chilli dip and were fabulously fresh and crispy. Can there be anything more unappetising than a soggy spring roll? We loved these crunchy delights and enjoyed using them to mop up the piquant dip. To accompany them we ordered the Satay Gai or Chicken Satay Skewers, gorgeously tender pieces of chicken in a silky smooth satay sauce, which we all dipped into and awarded rave reviews.
one of the tastiest soups we have ever eaten. The main ingredients were duck and noodles but the addition of spring onion, celery and nuts gave it an exquisite flavour and a great texture too. We were informed that this same dish is often also served with chicken in Thailand.
It is always worth looking at a restaurant’s list of special dishes to find out what makes the chef tick and we were recommended to try the Kuay Tiew Ped – and how happy we were to have taken the advice of the Top Thai staff. In case your knowledge of Thai cuisine doesn’t yet extend very far we can reveal that this proved to be
We also opted for the Kapraw Chicken, a healthy stir-fry that fans of Far Eastern cooking will love. Also available with Beef, Prawns, Duck or Fish, the wonderfully tender stir-fried meat was cooked with chilli, green beans, garlic and basil leaves and provided proof that healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring. As with
COSTA CUISINE
the other dishes, we were impressed almost as much by the texture as the flavour; with the kick of the chillies this was Thai street food as we had imagined it – spicy and satisfying. Of course, what would a Thai meal be without Phad Thai? This was available with chicken or prawns and we opted for the latter. Served with the traditional combination of noodles, bean sprouts, peanuts, lime and egg this proved a popular choice and we all dug in enthusiastically. Street food certainly encourages informal eating! The final main course choice was a beautifully fresh and healthy Gai Yang Issan (another choice from the specials section) with Som Tam Salad.
This was revealed to be Thai style grilled chicken, served with a green papaya salad, which provided a cool and fresh background. The salad was spicy, which provided the perfect contrast with the chicken. With all of the savoury dishes being awarded a critical clean sweep, it was time to move on to the dessert menu. We went for the Fried Banana (Fried Pineapple is another option) with Honey and Ice Cream, a surprisingly refreshing dish, especially with the coolness of the ice cream and the Mango and Sticky Rice, which provided a real touch of Eastern magic. This was a grand way to finish what had been an eating experience that we immediately agreed should be repeated as soon as possible.
With some restaurants it is difficult to put a finger on what it is precisely that makes the place such a success. Top Thai’s secret weapon is actually no secret: the chefs all hail from Thailand and clearly know their stuff. The restaurant’s ethos revolves around the quality of the ingredients and the excellence of the food, rather than an over-designed, chi-chi interior, which is probably the reason why it has been voted fifth out of 52 restaurants in Puerto Banús If, like us, you can’t run to a holiday in Thailand there’s no need to miss out on all the foodie fun – just turn up at Top Thai in Centro Plaza. We can promise you top quality dining with more than a dash of authenticity.

Ocean Clinic Par Excellence for Cosmetic Surgery Prestigious ISO certification for Quality Management awarded to Marbella cosmetic surgery clinic after rigorous auditing Congratulations to Ocean Clinic Marbella, which recently received a certificate for Quality Management by the prestigious International Standards Organisation (ISO). Ocean Clinic is the only independent Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery Clinic on the Costa del Sol to achieve the (ISO) 9001:2008 certification for Quality Management Systems. To attain this prestigious certification Ocean Clinic had to demonstrate its commitment to eight quality management principals including
Leadership, Involvement of People and Customer Focus. According to the ISO, the principles set out by the Quality Management standard form the basis for “operational excellence”. Says Dr. Kai Kaye, Medical Director at Ocean Clinic: “We are delighted to have achieved this certification. It follows rigorous assessment by the Standards Organisation and is testament to our ability to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations consistently. “We are continually looking to improve our service and having effective processes and systems in place helps us to achieve this. We will continue to be audited and re-certified over the next three years.” For their full list of treatments or to book a consultation, visit oceanclinic.net or call +34 951 775 518.
Your Online Wine Bible Winesunplugged.com was launched by British expat Niall Ferris, who has been living in Spain for over 20 years and has developed an extensive knowledge of the country’s bodegas and wines and forged close relationships with many Spanish wine makers. The Wines Unplugged website offers a broad selection of wines but specializes in those more limited wines that are produced by the country’s smaller bodegas, from bottles priced as low as six euros to exclusive, collector wines. The ‘12 Wines’ page on the website recommends a dozen wines of varying price levels to help you choose a top quality wine according to your specific budget. Other features are the ‘Bodega of the Month’, the ‘Sommelier´s Pick’ and the ‘Wine Market’ pages, in which you can make your own bid on selected wines. There is also an ‘All About Wine’ section, which gives advice on how to choose, store and serve wine and suggests which wines are best served with particular foods.
All wines (where applicable) are displayed with their current ratings from Robert Parker and Spanish wine bible, the Guía Peñín, as well as tasting notes. Unlike other websites, with Wines Unplugged there are no hidden delivery charges - the price you see is the price you pay for the wine delivered to your door and if you don´t like the wine you can return it and your account will be credited with the value of the returned bottles. Go and enjoy some of Spain’s finest wines with the help of Winesunplugged.com – cheers to that! Winesunplugged.com

Aloha is one of the SOCIETY team’s favourite areas of Marbella to enjoy some dinner and drinks. Not only does it offer a great atmosphere to enjoy food during the busy summer months, but it remains popular with expats throughout the year. As the summer draws ever closer, Tuk Tuk’s picturesque terrace is once again open for the season. There is nothing nicer than being tempted by their signature Tempura Prawn Sushi Roll and a cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc whilst sitting on their terrace, which has its very own waterfall feature. Enjoy! For reservations call: 951 27 91 88
