What does November say to you? When I was a kid, this month was a time for fireworks; everybody put on their warmest clothes and gloves (essential for handling those sparklers!) and went out into the garden to detonate a pack or two of fireworks. We might have eaten a hotdog or two while we were doing it, too.

While you’re feeling nostalgic for those Guy Fawkes nights of your youth, I am very happy to reveal that we have some fireworks of our own in this month’s issue of SOCIETY MARBELLA Magazine. Yes, we have managed to catch up with the hottest female singer in the world; after her controversial performance at the MTV VMAs we find out what Miley Cyrus is up to now. In a CNN interview shortly after what is known round our office as ‘Twerkgate’ Ms. Cyrus stated that she wanted her performance with Robin Thicke to make history. Well, it did a lot more than merely blur lines. She followed that up with her notorious Wrecking Ball video, which has ramped up the great Miley debate still further.

Last month the major international story (apart from Miley Cyrus’s dance moves, of course) was the Big Shutdown in America. How could it have happened and what were the implications for the rest of the world? For those of us who lacked the time to follow the battle between Democrats and Republicans, Nordea provides some insight and clarity.

ou’re a good girl’ sang Robin Thicke at the Video Music Awards held in Brooklyn, New York on 25 August as Miley Cyrus paraded around the vast stage wearing nothing but a nude latex bikini; safe to say the 20 year old has firmly forgotten her ‘good girl’ Disney channel days. Miley Cyrus was the Disney sensation of the decade thanks to her protagonist role in the Hannah Montana series. In the programme Miley played the character of Miley Stewart who was your average teenager by day and transformed into a famous pop star by night. The Hannah Montana storyline has obvious parallels with the real life of Miley Cyrus who has now become a mega super star thanks to securing various top ten hits including ‘Party in the USA’ and ‘We Can’t Stop’. However, the ‘Disney Curse’ seems to have reared its nasty head once again if Miley’s most recent behaviour is anything to go by. Miley’s controversial VMA performance created a storm of criticism and it is easy to understand why. Her VMA routine featured the singer underwear clad and storming around, tongue lolling out of her mouth and gyrating with a huge foam finger.

The crème de le crème of the music industry including Will Smith and his wife and two children, Taylor Swift and One Direction sat watching in the audience with expressions of disgust, horror and shock as the mash up of Miley’s ‘We Can’t Stop’ record and Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ played out. Miley’s trademark ‘twerking’ dance move also made an appearance during the performance. Twerking involves the dancer squatting down

and shaking her hips in a bouncing movement, causing her buttocks to ‘wobble’ in a provocative manner. The dance move became widely known after Miley posted a video to her facebook and twitter fans of her twerking in a unicorn onesie. A-listers have spoken out about the controversial dancemove; in an interview with US film website Moviefone One Direction member Harry Styles told the Daily Mail he thought it

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT was ‘inappropriate’ and ‘promoted promiscuity’. Indeed Miley has accumulated a fan base of millions from the Hannah Montana days, all young and highly impressionable. Her recent actions could potentially have a damaging affect on these easily influenced individuals who won’t have had the time or thinking space to fathom the dramatic transformation of their former hero.

Other high profile figures have felt propelled to comment on Miley’s recent behaviour alongside Harry Styles. Sinead O’Connor says it was ‘in the spirit of motherliness’ that she felt obliged to warn the young pop princess not to be exploited by the music industry. The BBC reports that O’Connor told Miley ‘you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped’. Her words of advice

seemed to have hit a nerve with Cyrus, who hit back with a series of tweets aimed at O’Connor and alluding to her mental health issues. Miley posted a screen shot of past tweets written by O’Connor referring to her bi-polar disorder, asking fans to recommend a psychiatrist for the Irish singer. Miley’s crazy antics do not end with her VMA performance. She created further scandal in the music video for her most recent song ‘Wrecking Ball’ which sees the star riding on a literal wrecking ball naked and licking a sledge hammer. The video is so absurd that a number of spoof versions have appeared online; Radio 1 DJ Greg James went naked in a parody of the music video, speaking to Digital Spy, he laughed ‘I wanted to show how completely ludicrous that video is’. There is also the infamous photo shoot which features Miley in a Disney t-shirt and ‘touching herself’ inappropriately. It seems this is some sort of act of defiance to her bygone Disney days and wholesome image during this era. The fall of a Disney star is something that has reoccurred several times in the past number of years hence my dubbing it ‘the Disney Curse’. Britney Spears for example, shot to fame in the nineties after being a member of the Mickey Mouse Club during her teenage years. She had the token boy band member boyfriend in Justin Timberlake and personified a pop princess with her long blonde hair and naturally pretty visage. Yet in a seemingly short space of time she lost her grip on reality as she checked herself into a drug rehabilitation centre in February 2007, shaved off all of her hair and lost custody of her children to ex-husband Kevin Federline. Even co-Mickey Mouse Club star Christina Aguilera who had seemed to follow a relatively normal life in comparison, was arrested for public intoxication in 2011 (although no charges were filed) and her Xfactor appearance the year earlier provoked thousands of complaints due to the raunchy nature of the performance. One has to question whether catapulting these young, talented individuals into global stardom is the best thing for their welfare in the long term. The tabloids are increasingly vicious in their portrayal of the actions and appearance of the rich and fa-

mous. The majority of today’s celebrities are extremely body conscious as a consequence of this intense scrutiny and Miley is no exception. Her LA pilates instructor told People magazine that Miley ‘wants to have good abs. It always makes her feel better’. Added to this, we are living in a generation of social media and as a result, no breakdown or even the slightest of mishaps can take place without it being posted on line and damned in the harshest of ways. A tidal wave of criticism poured in from Miley’s twitter followers following the release of her ‘Wrecking Ball’ video, one fan posted ‘you have just sold your soul in that’. Cyrus’ public actions have also had consequences on her private life. Her fiancé and partner of four years Liam Hemsworth, 23, has called time on their relationship. Closer magazine revealed that and star of the Hunger Games films, dumped her by phone, calling her ‘crazy’. Meanwhile, Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley’s father, has defended his daughter; speaking about THAT VMA performance, Hollywood Reporter stated that he told them ‘she’s evolving as an artist herself’. All artists obviously have that creative license; Billy Ray himself would know all about this from his experience in the music industry back in the nineties following the release of big hit ‘Achey Breaky Heart’. Maybe Miley is simply experimenting in order to arrive eventually at the core of who she is as a performer? The difficulty arises however when that experimentation takes places on the world’s stage in front of an audience of thousands. Miley is undoubtedly a great talent, lets just hope she can defy the ‘Disney curse’.

A team of EU inspectors arrived in Gibraltar to investigate a border dispute that has strained relations between Britain and Spain. The six inspectors from the European Commission’s customs union, justice services and anti-fraud office were interviewing people and monitoring customs and immigration proce-

Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett of Metallica attended the Metallica: Through the Never premiere at the Callao Cinema in Madrid, after spending quality time with the sea of fans waiting for autographs and photos. Actor Harrison Ford visited Madrid to promote his latest film Ender’s Game at Villamagna Hotel in Madrid. Ender’s Game is an American science fiction action film, based on the novel of the same name by Orson Scott Card. Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi has appeared in court as part of a tax fraud investigation. The 26-yearold Argentine, four times FIFA World Player of the Year, and his father Jorge Messi were summoned before a judge in Gava, where they were accused of evading tax on his image rights totaling €4.2 million. “I am not worried, I’m always on the sidelines of all that, just like my dad. We have our lawyers and our advisors who handle these things. We trust in them and they will solve the issue,” Messi said in July. Their lawyer Cristabal Martell, told the court the pair had, “Great willingness to set the matter straight with the tax authorities”. They have already made a “corrective payment” to Spanish authorities of just over €5 million. It has been reported that the defence’s strategy has been to pin blame on Jorge Messi. The judge will now determine whether or not to dismiss the charges or impose a punishment. A spokesperson for the Superior Court said the ruling “should not take long.”

king stepped down. They have a lot of work to do if they want to reconnect with their fellow countrymen.

Portuguese police have reopened their inquiry into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, the public prosecutor’s office has stated. Portugal’s attorney general said “new elements of evidence” justified the “continuation of the investigation”, which was shelved by police in 2008. The case was dropped a year after she went missing during a family holiday in the resort of Praia da Luz, but British detectives have since announced a series of new leads after a two-year review of the original investigation.

Earlier this month Scotland Yard spoke of a possible breakthrough after it emerged officers were analysing data from the phone records of people who were in Praia da Luz when Madeleine vanished.

Scotland Yard’s boss, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, believes the force now has the ‘best chance’ of solving the mystery.

The X Factor live shows, with their usual controversy, good (and bad) singers, warring judges and shocking revelations (that usually turn out to be not so shocking) hit the small screens last month and will run until the festive season, while Strictly Come Dancing also waltzed back into our living rooms with a host of not-so famous celebrities dancing their way to the final. With lots of sequins, over-excited judges and injuries that are seemingly bad until the contestant must dance on the live show, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sure to be a tense series. Also back is The Only Way is Essex, which began with a double episode in Vegas where the girls topped up their tans, the boys bed-hopped and tears flowed as quickly as the champagne.

The matriarch of the Kardashian/Jenner clan, Kris Jenner has decided to call time on her 22 year marriage to husband Bruce. The couple say that they will remain friends and will not be heading for divorce but wanted to separate officially as they have lived different lives for a long time now. Sources claimed earlier this year that the couple had split as Bruce moved into a separate beach house but at the time Kris claimed it was to give him more space when daughter Kim, her partner Kayne West and newborn baby North moved in while their house was being renovated. Friends have said that their numerous children are supporting the couple during this time but it seems their youngest daughters Kendall and Kylie are taking sides with Kendall moving in with Bruce and Kylie remaining at the family home.

Gwyneth Paltrow is heading for some controversy later this year, as the well-known American publication Vanity Fair has confirmed that it will be running a feature on the star that was unauthorised by her. Unfortunately for the actress, the fact that the feature is running is completely down to her own actions and there is no one to blame but herself. As far back as May this year, the star sent emails to all of her close friends warning that Vanity Fair were toying with the idea of an authorised feature and asked them not to comment if they were asked to. She also warned friends not to work with the magazine in future. Once the editor of Vanity Fair heard about Gwynethâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actions he stated that she sort of forced his hand because of her very public reaction to the feature, which will run in the near future.

The Wolf of Wall Street Based on the memoirs of Jordan Belfort who was convicted in 1998 for securities fraud and money laundering after he founded a brokerage film in the early 1990’s, the film is directed by Martin Scorsese, and showcases the highlights of Belfort’s career as well as the lows. Belfort had a party lifestyle and spent a lot of other people’s money in the years before his arrest all of which Leonardo DiCaprio portrays brilliantly. Free Birds When a pardoned turkey realises what really happens to other turkeys at Thanksgiving, he must join forces with an adversary to travel back in time to the very first Thanksgiving. This hilarious animated comedy features the voices of some of the world’s funniest actors including Owen Wilson who voices Reggie, an ordinary turkey who is pardoned by the President and lives a happy life on Camp David until he is kidnapped. His kidnappers, led by Jake, inform of that turkeys actually become tasty meals during the holiday season so the pair hijack a time machine to travel back in time and change history, taking themselves off the menu. X by Chris Brown Chris Brown releases his sixth studio album this month which he has entitled X and the singer has worked with many famous names to create the upcoming album including Rihanna, Ludacris, Timbaland, Nikki Minaj, Kelly Rowland and Pharrell. The album’s lead single, Fine China, was released in March and peaked at number 31 while his second single features the late singer Aaliyah as she had previously recorded a different version of the song before her death. The third single Love More featuring Nikki Minaj was released in August and fans are now looking forward to the album’s release. Loved me Back to Life by Celine Dion Loved me Back to Life is the next English speaking album from pop-star Celine Dion and features both new music and covers from other artists. The Canadian star has released many albums over the years and this one is just as anticipated by fans as the rest. There was some controversy over the name of the album as originally Celine had chosen Water and a Flame after one of the cover songs that is on the album and was written by musicians Daniel Merriweather and Eg White. However, after Celine failed to recognise the original song in an interview, Merriweather and White voiced their distaste of the singer for not giving credit where it was due and Celine promptly changed the album title.

Artpop by Lady Gaga American recording artist and all round crazy chica, Lady Gaga releases her third studio album this month which will be entitled Artpop. The album’s lead single, Applause, was released earlier this year and garnered success peaking at number 4 in the US billboard charts while for the second single, Gaga wanted her fans to choose which it should be. She started a twitter poll asking fans to choose between four songs and ultimately Venus was chosen. The album was supposed to be released at the beginning of 2013 but after Gaga needed hip surgery and had to cancel the remainder of her Born This Way Tour, the album’s release was pushed back to November, and is now greatly anticipated by fans.

Midnight Memories by One Direction The third studio album from world-wide pop sensation One Direction and as the boys just seem to be going from strength to strength, we’re sure this album will go directly to number one again. The band have stated that this album is going to be very different to the previous two albums and will have a rockier, edgier side to it as well as being more personal to the boys. The lead single, Best Song Ever, was released in July and peaked at number 2 in the UK while an upcoming stadium tour, the Where We Are tour, is planned for April 2014.

Avril Lavigne by Avril Lavigne Avril Lavigne is the upcoming self-titled fifth studio album from the Canadian singer who has stated that this album will be the complete opposite from her last album, Goodbye Lullaby. Three singles have already been released from the album, the first, Here’s to Never Growing Up, in April this year which peaked at number 20 on the billboard charts in America, while the other two were released in August and October respectively and have done marginally well.

adly, acts of selflessness seem to be a rarity these days, which is why SOCIETY MARBELLA is delighted to report on the great efforts of Dr Kai Kaye and his team of medical professionals on their recent visit to the Peruvian village of Coya, near Cusco. A team of plastic surgeons, namely Kai Kaye, Michael Saiveau and Daniel Sattler, dentists Sam Mark and Simon Mark, nurses Louise Taylor and Claire Henry, anaesthetist Raimundo Escudero and PT/Auxiliary nurses Nicole Tascone and Samira Mark hauled 300kg of medical material to the Kausay Wasi Clinic in Coya, Peru. Between 3 October and 13 October 2013, the team performed over 100 operations on Peruvian locals thanks to generous donations accumulated by the Ocean Clinic Fundraiser. Their diary recounts their exhausting but deeply moving adventure.

Thursday 3 October

The journey begins! We catch the AVE to Madrid, then on to the long night flight to Peru. Excitement is running high within the team. In the hold below, we are transporting 12 travel boxes - some 300 kg of medical material needed for the adventure ahead.

Friday 4 October

The eagle has landed at Lima airport. However, we hit our first brick wall in the form of an adamant Peruvian customs official who will not clear the 300kg of medical equipment, despite the mounds of official documents and permits we have brought with us. Thankfully, after a classic dose of sweet talk and the promise of a cheap boob job to the female customs official if ever she wanted one, we pass through. “Solo una vez,” she muttered as we pass ready to board the connecting flight to Cusco, which stands at a dizzying 4000m above sea level. As we step off the plane, the entire team feels extremely light headed - is this so-called altitude sickness? We then travel 90 minutes hours on an old minibus over mountain passes with steep gorges and a complete lack of fences or road barricades; does the driver know this? We finally arrive at our hotel, which is simple but charming. It’s been a long journey so we head to bed at 8pm.

Saturday 5 October

Our only day off and we spend it heading up to Machu Picchu by train. After a 6am start, we reach the famous Inca site by late morning. It is raining and misty and we feel like we have been trapped in some ancient Inca movie, but then the weather clears to reveal the breath-taking location. It is hard to believe the structures were built by hand, no wheels or pulleys and all at almost 3500 metres.

Sunday 6 October Triage Day Viewing and selecting patients Upon arrival at the clinic there are 100 plus people sitting on the street; they have journeyed from all over the valley. The surgeons and nurses see 130 people throughout the day in consultation – many pathologies you just don’t see in Europe; giant tumours, malformations, clefts, scars and many burns. The first cases are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. Local staff members are very nice. The clinic’s director looks and acts like an ex-CIA Special Forces general but, hey, deep inside there’s a good soul… we think!

The tale behind Machu Picchu is that the Incas deserted it overnight, fleeing from the marauding Spaniards. Yet, ironically the Spanish conquistadores never found Machu Picchu when they invaded Peru. It remained hidden for the next several hundred years until American anthropologist Hiram Bingham discovered the site in 1913 writing,

“we found ourselves in the midst of a jungle-covered maze of small and large walls.” We head back by train, tired but content and eating our dinner on the way. Some of the team experiment with

Work is so different here; patients’ families run in and out of the recovery unit and there are no real lights, so we resort to working with head lamps on our loupes. The team is tired but happy at dinner back in the hostal, everybody is asleep by 9pm.

Tuesday 8 October

Another 13 operations today, we see a lot of cases of malformations of the face in particular. We think this must be due to a mixture of the genetic pool which never leaves the valley and reflects ethnic incest in the little pueblos. We hear from some local doctors that some of the facial malformations (ears/mandibular mouth) are due to the extensive use of pesticides like DDT, which has been strictly prohibited in Europe for many years. We reconstruct facial features; close corners of mouths open too wide and rearrange ear parts stuck in the wrong place – it is a testing day. Back at the hostal at 9pm, no dinner as the cook is asleep so we head to bed too.

Wednesday 9 October

Highlight of today involves an old lady with a tumour as big as two footballs. She had come in on Monday, walking bent over to one side bearing the weight of 20 years of this growth without any treatment. Seeing this case makes the team accept that if we don’t act now, the job may never be done, no matter how bad it may be. It dawns on us that all the safety and healthcare we could offer this patient in Europe is only an illusion in places like this. The lady eventually leaves the clinic walking straight and smiling. The afternoon involves big burn surgeries. Peruvians living in this valley often don’t have electricity in their houses, so everything involving heating, cooking and lighting is done by portable kerosene stoves. These stoves tend to fall and spill, often onto the children of the household. Even if we can’t fix a body so that there is no trace of scars, our goal is to correct functional impairment through the burn scars (for example, contractures /pulling scars, open wounds due to scar location and rubbing, scars over joints inhibiting movements, scars restricting opening of mouth or eyes.)

We perform many skin transplants over the course of the day, a total of 12 operations, leaving us exhausted as we stagger back to the hostal.

Thursday 10 October Reconstructing ears Microtia or absence of the ear is common here and regarded as a stigma. We perform two partial and two total ear reconstructions, using cartilage from the ribs and reconstructing the ear. It is challenging surgery which takes two to three hours. In Europe, patients would stay two or three days in hospital, but here in Peru they leave after just 24 hours because there are different priorities and the ward is desperately needed for the next patients, yet another difference between the medical care in Europe and South America. We have a celebration at dinner this evening because our anaesthetist is leaving tomorrow, one day earlier than the rest of the team. We congratulate him on the great job he has done out here, mainly paediatric anaesthesia (very difficult) in poor hospital conditions and without any complications throughout the whole week; thanks Raimundo!

Friday 11 October

Our last day! We have a final lunch with local staff and give thanks to all of the nurses from Kausay Wasi - what amazing individuals. Today we perform another 10 surgeries, all under local anaesthesia, mostly scar and burn revisions. We are so tired that we are happy to be finished by 4pm today and have time to pack our stuff.

Town and Plaza de Las Armas. We have one last lunch in a modern restaurant (everybody has pizza, except one person who ordered Peruvian style Chinoa and was subsequently sick for the whole flight back.) Leaving the country is far easier than the arrival experience. The only downside is the Iberia plane, a semi –retired old rattletrap with NO amenities and hard seats!

We then take our first walk through the village and the surrounding fields. The scenery is breath-taking but locals live in extremely poor housing. We enjoy a team dinner in the next little town: there are NO restaurants in Coya, only free running pigs! Everybody is really excited to enjoy some pizza, pasta and European style food. After consuming various local delights over the week which made some of the team very ill we have become careful, no more ‘cuy’ (guinea pig), please.

Saturday 12 October

We are picked up at the hostel by the same overloaded bus. On the way back to Cusco it starts to rain, nobody speaks except the driver who uses both hands to explain the surroundings or to fiddle with his mobile phone rather than direct the bus through the tight mountain pass roads. Back in Cusco (and relieved to be alive), we enjoy a ten minute tour of the Old

Personal Experiences OF EMS TRAINING By Georgina Shaw

am a 33 year old Mum of two-year old Lucas, I enjoy working out but never manage to find the time or the long term motivation. My aim when I started training at Look Your Best was to find a way to quickly lose my “wobbly bits”, without losing weight and try to find something which can incorporate into our very busy schedule.

The idea appealed to me, as it’s just a short 20 minute session, but because of the EMS technology, you can work 90% of your muscles at once and therefore get the equivalent results of 120 minutes in the gym! It can also target problem areas such as your tummy as the muscles are working harder for longer. It also strengthens your back, which I worry about as my toddler gets heavier and heavier.

How the training works

At the start of training they give you a comprehensive body test with their clever In Body machine which tells you your BMI, muscle mass, percentage of body fat, hydration and more. This is used to set goals and showed that I needed to put on 4.1kg of muscle, but lose 1.7kg of fat.

The normal training session consists of enjoying an isotonic drink, then being given cycle shorts and a long sleeved t-shirt and socks to work out in. You are then helped into the special suits which look a bit Lara Croft (in my mind anyway) to start the workout. It’s thanks to this clever equipment that you can get such great results in such a short time, as the suit contains electrodes in all the right places to make your muscles work really hard throughout, so if you’re doing a squat, the suit is also working your arms, tummy, back etc. The EMS feels like a strong pulse or tickle, which you can really feel working but isn’t uncomfortable. The session includes muscle building, cardio and then stretching and relaxation – a lot to pack in over 20 minutes. This is a proper workout with a personal trainer, but those pulses really make you work a lot harder and achieve better results and the interval training nature of the class means you achieve a lot in a short amount of time. Having the personal trainer there checking you’re doing the movements properly and motivating you to keep up the intensity is really valu-

able and definitely helps us to get the most out of the session. Following a shower in their spacious and pristine changing rooms, you are given a protein shake and can relax on their sofas. We’re so busy that we haven’t been able to do the recommended 2 sessions per week. PROBLEM? Dr Ursula Jacob addresses some of the issues in her work with patients across the world.

Are you feeling fatigued or low in energy? Are you suffering from abnormal hair loss? All too often these symptoms result from having a dysfunctional metabolism which can be caused by a slow or under-par functioning of the thyroid, intestines or the general immune system. The medical and scientific community recognises the impact of environmental factors in relation to these common symptoms. Chemicals that we come into contact with in our homes and in the atmosphere and heavy metals, such as those which are thought to be released by old Mercury fillings or found in the environment as a result of pollution, all have the potential to disturb our organ function, leading to autoimmune problems and/or chronic allergy problems. In autoimmune disease, the body is working against itself as antibodies join together with normal cells, such as our immune cells, our thyroid cells and intestine or bowel cells. This can happen anywhere in our body where we have small vessels like the hands, feet, brain, bowels, skin etc. The intestinal and digestive system gets compromised and because this is the biggest immune system in an adult body, the lymph system gets “lazy” and cannot produce enough immune cells. When the circulation and metabolism is not functioning properly the thyroid function is lowered as in Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. This is an autoimmune disease in which the thyroid gland

is attacked by a variety of cell and antibody-mediated immune processes. If the skin cannot detox properly it can lead to Psoriasis and when the bowels cannot form stools or maintain a normal level of bowel flora this can result in Colitis. In extreme cases patients can develop diabetes, heart problems and high blood pressure. Many of my patients have experienced these conditions over a long period of time, sometimes for years, and being unwell with fatigue, sleeping problems, digestive problems and generally being under par has become a way of life. There are various hypotheses about the cause of Autoimmune Disease. Genetic disposition in combination with external factors (like stress, infections, etc.), too little exposition to environmental bacteria, chronic viral infections and unfavourable environmental influences. At our clinic we use state-of-the-art testing to investigate thoroughly the

functioning of the immune system and metabolic system along with flora levels and functioning of the bowel in order to identify possible triggers. We then design an individualised treatment programme comprising targeted micronutrients, good fatty acids and natural supplements that are specifically designed to improve function and reduce chronic inflammation. We combine that with treatments designed to reduce any pre-existing antibody imbalances, as well as detox programmes and lymphatic drainage treatments. ince my last diary entry I have finished the theory section; now that was hard work. I can just about explain the functions of the skin, but if you want me to name the bones in the human skull, forget it. I currently have a skull diagram taped to my bathroom mirror which I study while cleaning my teeth. I know - not really what you want to see first thing in the morning but, fingers crossed, something will sink in before the final exams. I have also started the practical side of the C.I.B.T.A.C Fashion & Photographic Makeup Level 3 course, meaning the one super group of students has been split up into their specialised subjects. There are five students in my class and four teachers, Liza Mayne (makeup), Maria Arana (airbrushing), Alex Maloney (hairstyling) and our head teacher Faye Kilcourse, who has a BA in makeup and prosthetics from the London College of Fashion under her belt. Faye is everything that you would want from a teacher. She is passionate, inspires her students to spread their wings creatively and pushes us to think outside the box. She is also a little scary, quite

surprising really, as on first impressions you think she is this beautiful tiny little china doll but, believe me, you wouldn’t want to forget to do your homework. I have seen the outcome and it’s not pretty. Faye started our first lesson by outlining what we would be learning about, everything from ageing the face to high fashion makeup and from cuts and bruises to prosthetics. We will have to present a final portfolio to the examiner which will contain the following looks: period, fantasy, high fashion, catwalk, bridal, commercial, day look and basic fashion look. Alongside that we will be judged on our mood boards and research. My best ideas come to me in the middle of the night, so as usual I was up at 3am scribbling away. I have decided to run a theme throughout my portfolio. All the looks will be linked by the Seven Deadly Sins. For example, for the bridal look, the model may be looking in the mirror (Pride) however, for the fantasy look I could go all out with Wrath. This has got me super excited and I cannot wait to get started on it.

For our first hands-on experience, Faye gave us the task of painting a skull on each other’s faces. I can hear you thinking, “Erm…okay!” Don’t worry there was a method to her madness. In order to paint the skull we had to explore the structure of the face with our fingertips; where it was hollow we had to apply black and any areas which were prominent or raised had to be painted white. This makes you think about the person’s face shape, contouring and highlighting. Yes, this is exactly how a makeup artist would create their base but using foundations, bronzers etc. I have to admit my final effort totally sucked. Poor Ali, who had drawn the short straw by being partnered with me, looked like she had been attacked by a five yearold with face paints. I ran out of time and left feeling very disheartened and doubting whether I actually had any talent at all. Faye sent us away with two assignments. First she gave us a list of products and tools we needed for our

kit. Now this is MY kind of homework. To cheer myself up, I ran around El Corte Inglés like a child in a candy store. I bought out most of MAC, Make Up For Ever, Benefit and YSL, before bounding upstairs and attacking the art section. This shopping spree lifted my spirit for a few days, until I got my credit card bill. Thanks Faye! The second part of my homework was to study face shapes, skin types and collect ideas for natural makeup looks. After my skull disaster I decided to get stuck in and thoroughly prepare myself for the next lesson. I was totally unimpressed to find out that I have a ‘square shaped face.’ All these years I have been happily floating around thinking I was ‘round’ and now I find out I am Spongebob Squarepants. For the natural makeup lesson, Faye brought in a beautiful model for her demonstration and we got to see her work her magic. It’s like watching an artist painting a blank canvas. This time I was paired with Katie. I had supermodel Gisele pinned to the mirror for inspiration, my new products and brushes in my hand and I set to work. This time I was delighted with the final result. Obviously I won’t be getting booked by Vogue just yet, but for only my second lesson, I was pleased with my work. The downside to learning all of Faye’s tricks is it now takes me twice as long

to get ready as I am constantly practising on myself. I am consistently in the other half’s bad books because I am late for everything - and just wait till my new SIGMA makeup brushes arrive and he sees how much I have spent. I think I am just going to blame everything on Faye from now on. Nikki Beach Marbella said a sweet goodbye to another incredible season with its 10th Annual Season Closing Red Party. Over 1,500 of Marbella’s movers and shakers, along with many of Nikki Beach’s jet-setting devotees from around the globe, were in attendance. Everything from statement necklaces to sequinned cashmere jumpers were showcased to a packed store of fashionistas, who sipped champagne and perused the clothing rails. The owners are bubbly and full of fun which makes your shopping experience relaxed and a happy experience for all involved. F1 OKTOBERFEST AT LA ZAGALETA Wonderful weather and 220 participants ensured another successful Oktoberfest Golf Tournament. F1 Immo Car Gallery very generously donated a stylish Mercedes A-Class for any golfer skillful – or lucky - enough to nail a hole-in-one, but unfortunately none of the 80 golfers managed this feat. However, the best players were awarded trophies in the shape of Bavarian beer steins. In the evening, at the Oktoberfest Party, typical Bavarian food and beer was available, especially flown in from Munich. Some great live music added to the buzz and people danced until the early hours.

Regina’s restaurant hosted a glamorous fashion show on 18 October which saw young, freshfaced models strut up and down the restaurant in designer Gina B’s Winter Collection. Guests were treated to fine Italian cuisine as musician Pilar played international guitar flamenco style music while the fashion show took place. Restaurant owner Paula told SOCIETY “it was a really exciting event. As the Winter draws closer and an older population settle in Marbella, the fashion event was different and refreshing”. Winter essentials such as fur coats and evening dresses ideal for the festive season featured heavily on the runway that extended throughout the main dining room as well as into the conservatory at the back of the venue. “We like to support our neighbours” Paula replied when we asked her what prompted the fashion event; Gina B looks set for her best Winter yet judging by feedback from guests of the fashion show, head to her ladieswear boutique in Nueva Andalucia for any of the pieces featured.

Their star element is leather. From the outset, leather is entrusted to master tanners, - keepers of ancient traditions – who skilfully

work with its original thickness and tint with natural anilines. A fabulous leather swatch of tints, tones and colours are available, all of which add brilliance and elegance to each piece they upholster. The Baxter world, increasingly rich and eclectic, owes a great debt to the 1950s which is evoked by new collections of accessories such as rugs, lamps, coffee tables using new and refined materials and often decorated or finished by hand and thus inherently unique. The US is facing another fiscal stalemate. Since the US Congress failed to reach any agreement on a budget for the new fiscal year that began on 1 October, a partial federal government shutdown is now a reality, and about 20% of federal spending is affected. While the shutdown may be expected to only last up to two weeks, in which case any direct impact on the

economy will be minimal (possibly reducing annualised US GDP growth by 0.2-0.3 percentage points in Q4), the potential indirect impact could be quite significant. One major concern is that even a short shutdown could seriously undermine sentiment in the financial markets, not necessarily because of the inability to reach a budget agreement, but rather because it may jeopardise attempts at finding a resolution to raise the federal debt ceiling, which the US Treasury expects to be breached very soon. Congress must agree to raise the debt ceiling by 17 October if the US government is to avoid a default. President Obama continues to warn that he will not negotiate fiscal policy as a condition for raising the debt ceiling. Republican leaders, on the other hand, promise a “whale of a fight” on the issue, attaching

conservative priorities, such as changes or a delay to “Obamacare” if they are to agree to a debt-ceiling increase.

POTENTIALLY SERIOUS FALLOUT If no progress materialises on the budget and debt-ceiling issues, global markets are likely to shift to a phase of heightened risk aversion, which could see a sell-off in equities, lower “safe-haven” government bond yields and a weaker US dollar. Eventually, such a burst of market volatility would likely force Washington policymakers into finding a solution to the urgent fiscal issues, while the Federal Reserve probably would postpone any slowing of its asset purchases into 2014. US politicians must therefore put aside their ideological differences and resolve the ongoing impasse as soon as possible to limit the damage that their current course will lead to.

am sure I am not alone when I find myself immediately scowling and outraged at anyone who mentions the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Câ&#x20AC;? word. Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the BMW X5 BMWâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s X cars are a brand unto themselves, with the X5 in the role of range flagship. Thus, the fact that the third generation X5 does not radically depart from its predecessor in appearance is no bad thing for owners of the present model.

smidgen larger than the outgoing X5 (E70) model, the evolutionary new X5 (F15) has an expanded role to fulfil. You realise how far the new car has raised the game the moment you open the door and experience its plusher and more upmarket cabin. The enhanced interior takes the new X5 to the next level in sophistication. Just the stitched leather covering on the dashboard top roll and the pleated pattern on the hides of the seats alone make a world of difference to the way you perceive the class and quality of the interior. It looks and feels more expensive and exclusive straight away, and that initial first impression pervades everything as you run your eyes over the design, fit and finish of the heavily revised cabin. If choice is a good thing, BMW has really pushed the boat out with enough trim package options to either titillate or confuse a would-be customer. A raft of seat designs, trim patterns and materials are

there for the asking. These fall under the titles of Design Pure Experience and Design Pure Excellence plus M Sport Package, to be chosen according to whether your bent is more towards luxury, sporting or a combination of the two. Subtle detailing includes high-level accent lighting under the dashboard and door trims in a choice four colours that can be changed at the touch of a button. Call it a gimmick if you will, but this mood lighting does actually add to the ambience and sophistication of the cabin at night, especially when one of the warmer hues is chosen.

This new roomier interior has the option of a third row of seats to give it sevenseat capability. The boot area is now 650 litres, expanding to a massive 1,870 litres with the 40/20/40 split rear seat folded flat. Automatic tailgate operation is now standard, and can be opened and closed by the remote control key, as well as from the drivers seat. The bodyshell surrounding this enticing interior is also new as are its mechanical underpinnings. While the previous X5 was a big step forwards in creature comforts, both perceived and real, over the first generation car from 1998, the new car

moves the game ahead a perceptible amount in all aspects of performance, handling, ride comfort, as well as sheer desirability. Despite strong visual links to its predecessor, every panel is new. The fresh ‘face’ of the 2014 X5 features larger ‘kidney’ grilles in a more upright front that gives it even more gravitas. Along with the slightly raised bonnet line, this improves pedestrian impact protection. The aluminium bonnet has pyrotechnic devices to move it upwards and away from the hard engine structure if it senses a pedestrian strike. According to Chassis Dynamics engineer, Cornelius Zim, the double wishbone front suspension is a fresh design with its spring pans sitting a bit lower for better kinematics within a conventional coil spring and gas active damper arrangement. “Our main objective was to measurably improve ride comfort and bring an even greater level of sophistication to the new car,” he explained. “To do this we had to devise new suspension kinematics, and ended up re-designing the whole front suspension and its axle carrier.”

torsional rigidity is up by five percent, which helps handling and ride. This is a worthwhile improvement when you consider the shell has plenty of big holes in it like the split rear tailgate and the Panoramic sunroof, standard in the US and an option in other markets. “Every front suspension component is different, and we use lightweight high strength steels for some components, with aluminium for others, “ he said. “The sub-frame is made from lightweight, high-strength steel as aluminium is not strong enough for a car of this weight.” At the rear axle, the base X5 model has a mildly tweaked version of the previous steel spring and gas damper design. The optional Comfort and Professional suspension systems use self-levelling air suspension with active anti-roll bars. Dynamic Performance Control with torque vectoring to vary power between the rear wheels is part of these two packages. Unlike some rivals that use air suspension all-round, the steel front springs mean that the X5 does not have the ability to alter its ride height. Thus, its 209mm ground clearance remains almost unchanged from the outgoing model. Maximum water fording depth is 500mm at 7km/h. Aerodynamic refinements are pretty subtle and include the air curtain system that reduces air turbulence around the front wheels. The exit vents behind the front wheel arches are fully functional as opposed to the dummy vents favoured by aftermarket tuners in the past. On the X5, form follows function, and these vents are also used as the design cue for the sweeping design line that runs aft into the front and rear doors. Thus, they look part and parcel of the design rather than an isolated and comparatively static design element in the front wings as they appear on the 3-Series GT. According to Sven Ritter, specialist engineer for body and trim, the new X5’s

aluminium and high strength, lightweight steel in strategic places. The bonnet is now aluminium, as is some of the structural reinforcement in the engine bay area, which takes weight out of the nose, to the benefit of handling. The front and rear crash beams behind the PU-RIM bumper covers are now also aluminium. The lightest large structural component in the car is the support structure behind the dashboard. This is made from magnesium and follows the design ethos the BMW Group began with the Rolls-Royce Phantom. While 90kg has been shaved off the body weight, all the extra equipment required to address the legislative demands for current and forthcoming safety and emissions standards mean that this saving has been eaten up, and the new X5 tips the scales with similar weights as its predecessor model-for-model. This means 2,070kg (DIN) for the xDrive30d and 2,175kg (DIN) for the xDrive50i.

This is the first time ever that an X5 variant is being offered with a four-cylinder engine, and it is also the first time that a BMW fourcylinder diesel exists with sufficient power and torque to deliver credible performance in a car of this size.

That said, the advances in powertrain efficiency enable the new X5 to go faster and further on a gallon of fuel. While all models benefit from lower emissions, C02 numbers will be at an all-time low with the new entry-level 218hp X5 xDrive25d that appears in the European line-up next year. This is the first time ever that an X5 variant is being offered with a four-cylinder engine, and it is also the first time that a BMW four-cylinder diesel exists with sufficient power and torque to deliver credible performance in a car of this size.

The fact that a rear-wheel-drive only sDrive25d will also be available with this engine means that there are less driveline losses too, and emissions are a meagre 149g/km of C02 versus 155g/km for the xDrive25d version.

The drag coefficient of 0.31 that helps towards the miserly average fuel consumption of just 6.7 L/100km with 177g/ km emissions is impressive, and all the new X5 models meet the forthcoming EU6 emission standards.

At the other end of the scale, the most exciting balance of power and economy will come from the X5 xDrive M50d, whose triple turbo 2,993cc six offers a stonking 381hp from 4,000 to 4,400rpm with 740Nm of torque between 2,000 and 3,000rpm. This rockets the car to 100km/h in 5.3 sec, and quite rapidly on to its electronically governed 250km/h Vmax.

At launch however, only the 450hp xDrive50i, 258hpo xDrive30d and 381hp xDrive M50 M Performance versions will be available. The xDrive40d, xDrive35i, xDrive25d and sDrive25d will come on stream at the end of the year. The eight-speed automatic gearbox that has now become the default gearbox in

many new BMW models is a large part of the efficiency equation. With its torque multiplication abilities at low revs and its closely stacked and seamless ratios, it is able to make full use of the available power and torque of the motor. The slick gearbox helps to extract the best performance from the new twin-turbo, direct-injection V8 in the X5 xDrive50i. I drove this version first from downtown Vancouver up into the mountains near Whistler, where its near instant throttle response and huge raft of torque always felt capable of neutralising the mass of this big car with a mere prod on the throttle. Equipped with the Professional suspension package, the 450hp xDrive50i can waft along on its 650Nm of twist in Comfort mode on the freeway one moment, and then morph into a pretty good impression of a big and heavy performance sedan on the twisty mountain roads with Sport mode engaged. Gun it away from rest and a near supercar 0-100km/h time of 5.0 sec pins you back in your comfortable leather seat. The 250km/h top speed is electronically limited. As always, it is initially daunting to fling a tall vehicle into bends like this, but with the active anti-roll bars strutting their stuff, the roll angle is well contained and body control is impressive.

You build up your confidence to the point where you feel you are actually defying the laws of physics, and end up covering ground at an indecently rapid rate with little drama. The power steering is one of the better electric systems BMW has produced of late. The other model BMW provided for us to try was the xDrive30d, whose motor has been mildly tweaked to improve efficiency and emissions. Whether in town or on the open road, this motor is characterised by its strong torque and good throttle response. Where the petrol V8 gives off a deep, distant rumble when it is working hard, the 20kg lighter straight-six oil burner has a just audible diesel clatter when accelerating from low revs, that morphs into the familiar straight-six soundtrack as it picks up revs. The 0-100km/h time of this heavy oil burner is a respectable 6.9 sec, with a 230km/h Vmax. At cruise on a light throttle, the diesel engine is all but inaudible and its strong power and torque delivery coupled to good economy and emissions perfectly suit the long legged character of this vehicle. BMW claim a combined consumption of 6.2 L/100km with emissions of 162g/km. The base X5 models such as the entrylevel diesels have 18-inch wheels and you have a choice of normal or Runflat

tyres. The X5 xDrive30d and 50i have 19inch wheels with Runflat tyres as standard, and there is a 20-inch option too, also with Runflats. All our 30d and 50i test cars wore 9.0J and 10.0J x 19-inch alloys shod with 255/50R19 and 285/45R19 rubber, a nice balance between handling, grip, and ride comfort while providing just enough of that all-important aesthetic appeal. It is quite normal for new cars to be launched in some markets before others as production of LHD and then RHD versions is ramped up. However, BMW plans to roll out the new X5 in all markets simultaneously. The big day is November 16th. All X5s are built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and the US market will get the 35i and 50i petrol models with the 35d holding the fort for fans of heavy oil burning engines. Europe will get the 35i, 50i, 30d and M 50d models first, with the 35d and the four-cylinder versions coming on stream next year. ike Disneyworld, Café Yanx can always be relied upon to provide a thoroughly enjoyable family experience. Conveniently located in Nueva Andalucía’s bustling Centro Plaza, the Yanx team has worked hard to build a loyal clientele since it first opened its doors in 1997. Originally designed by Americans, which explains the authenticity of the décor, Yanx is now owned and managed by David Fisher, whose 25 years of experience in the catering and hospitality business explains why this phenomenally popular restaurant is still packing in the punters. The Fishers owned restaurants, pubs and nightclubs all over the UK, so David was able to learn the business from an early age. Later he attended catering college and became head chef at three American style restaurants in Norwich, so when it comes to providing an experience that customers are happy to enjoy again and again, few restaurateurs are better qualified. Its conveniently close proximity to Puerto Banús’s rastro means that it is full to bursting on Saturday mornings but, unlike many similar establishments, Yanx seems to be buzzing around the clock on every day of the week. Much of its success can surely be attributed to the warm welcome extended to customers, both returning and new, by the superbly well trained staff. Of course, anyone who has ever visited America will be accustomed to the friendliness of the waiters and the promptness of the service and this is beautifully recreated by the Yanx team. Whether you are just popping in with a

few friends for coffee or arriving with your extended family for a slap-up, threecourse feast, the five-star treatment is exactly the same. Another of Yanx’s particular strengths is its consistency and reliability, a factor which has established it as one of Marbella’s most popular family restaurants. Of course, this should be a basic tenet of every café and restaurant, but wavering quality is a factor that has toppled many an otherwise excellent eatery. Yanx, however, continues to pull in the crowds; David Fisher has always been quick to name his staff as his secret weapon and he is quite correct. A determination to recreate the happy, relaxed air of an American diner and turning out reliably tasty dishes using the freshest produce available has paid dividends. Putting the Yanx menu through its paces does require a certain amount of self-sacrifice, since the portions are so generous that we decided to fast beforehand. The starters, in particular, are wonderfully varied, so we decided to order several dishes and share them among our party of four. We are all big fans of Mexican food, so could not resist the Nachos, which were served with Chilli Beef, Jalapeños, Cheese and Guacamole and we teamed that up with a bowl of Chilli Con Carne with Corn Chips, Grated Cheese and Pico de Gallo. Yanx’s chilli beef is an experience that everyone should have at least once a month – first the beautifully authentic flavours and then the sudden burst of heat. Continuing the Tex-Mex theme, we opted for a bowl of Guacamole with

Tortilla Chips and the delicious Letterman Skins, crispy Potato Skins grilled with Bacon and Cheese and served with Sour Cream. We have visited Yanx so many times that we were familiar with their fabulous range of burgers, so we decided to choose something different. The Ho Chi Minh Rice promised to provide a touch of lightness after our substantial starters, consisting of Vietnamese Fried Rice, Chilli, Chicken, Shrimp and Soy Veg and served with an Egg on top. The Mountain Goat Salad also proved an excellent choice, the healthy Mixed Leaves, Diced Tomatoes and Pine Nuts salad was topped with a mouthwatering, melting Goat’s Cheese Crouton, its creamy texture contrasting with the crunch of the salad. We also enjoyed the San Francisco Noodles, which were prepared with Cucumber, Spring Onions, Sesame Seeds, Tamari Sauce and topped with delicious Crispy Fried Leeks. Although you can choose this dish with Chicken or Shrimps we decided to enjoy it as a vegetarian option and we were not disappointed with the wonderful textures and flavours, which were enhanced by the tasty tamari sauce. Our final choice was the fresh Pan Seared Salmon which had been covered in a gorgeous Honey and Soy Glaze and was served with a fabulous Pineapple Salsa, Pilau Rice and some crunchy Vegetables. Like the starters, we elected to place these dishes in the centre of the table so that we could all sample each of them. What impressed us was what has also created Yanx’s enviable roster of return customers, namely the freshness of the

ingredients and the attention paid to presentation; the food really does look as good as it tastes. Ordering dessert could be considered foolhardy, but we are nothing if not intrepid. Our sweet selection consisted of a Best Little Brownie in the West with Vanilla Ice Cream and a superb Hot Chocolate and Caramel Sauce and the Baked Cheesecake with a Fresh Raspberry Coulis. Just to keep up the calorie count we combined that with the Alabama Apple Crisp and the Frozen Peanut Butter-Chocolate Pie, which also featured a Chocolate Glaze and a Hot Caramel Topping. We felt guilty after consuming all that deliciousness – but not so guilty that we passed up the Irish Coffees afterwards. After pulling in the crowds for 26 years, most restaurants find that their popularity waxes and wanes, but Yanx has somehow found the elixir of perpetual success. We were young, crazy and care free at 17 years old. We knew of each other through friends and in the few times we would bump into each other I would sometimes get a wink and a smile and he would get a little wave back. Who would have known that 17 years later, I would be married to him!

Two years later, we had been well acquainted with each other’s family and friends and we had been on a few holidays together and we were definitely ready to take the next step in our relationship. It was just a case of him popping the question. Last September we

went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do.

It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had Michknown ael and each other. We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.

I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…

The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain! I wanted a wedding with a difference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holiday at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

After the sounds of the Spanish guitar and a few champagne cocktails later, guests were ushered to the reception on the outdoor terrace surrounded by olive trees with suspended Chinese lanterns and wicker hearts. Founder of SOS Animals UK Spain has a long tradition of hunting with dogs, and two breeds – the Galgo and the Podenco – are generally used in the south.

Before I hand over to Tania Coates (SOS Animals UK) I just wanted to share my personal experience. Until I came to Spain I had never come across a Podenco. Two years ago, a Podenco mix puppy was thrown out of a car in Nueva Andalucia. This big eared, quivering wreck gave my partner and I one look filled with such sorrow, that we took him in there and then. Kobi is like marmite; people either love or hate him. If I walk him along the beach people regularly stop and take photos of him, however it is also common for people to cross the street to avoid us and one man even told my partner that Kobi was a beast and should be muzzled. Poor Kobi has been compared with everything from a rat to the mutants in the movie I Am Legend. However I think he is beautiful. The breed does have a bad reputation and, yes, I will put my hand up, they are a lot of work. However, the benefits greatly outweigh the negatives. Podencos are incredibly loyal; Kobi follows me everywhere. If I cry he licks away my tears and if I am ill he sits by my side. I have never known a dog be as gentle with food and obviously I wouldn’t recommend this, but my partner’s daughter once took food out of his bowl while he was eating and he didn’t move a muscle. As for protection you couldn’t get a better guard dog. I cannot understand why they are so badly treated in this country. They say that dogs are man’s best friend - well Kobi is mine.

The Galgo is similar to a Greyhound, but tougher and with more stamina, while the Podenco (which means hound in Spanish) is similar in stature to the Pharaoh Hound, with his large chest and shallow belly. However some – such as the Podenco Maneto – can be squat, or even medium-size or large like the Podenco Ibicenco (Ibizan Hound). Both Galgos and Podencos are considered ancient breeds and it is often claimed that the Podenco is a descendant of the hounds of the Pharaohs, and is believed to have arrived in Europe in around the eighth century. Although some of these Spanish dogs are cared for adequately, many are treated very poorly, and at the end of the hunting season it is not uncommon for dogs to be shot or hung because they are considered no longer useful. The streets and countryside of Spain are full of strays and abandoned dogs are left to breed unchecked. In addition, neutering and vaccination are very rare.

Spanish pounds and rescue shelters are over-populated with dogs looking for homes, and SOS Animals is one such shelter. Run by Spanish, British and Swedish volunteers, around 60 or 70 dogs are cared for at any one time whilst efforts are made to find foster and forever homes for these abandoned animals. SOS Animals UK was set up over four years ago to try and help with this dreadful situation. A volunteer-run organisation, it is dedicated to helping the SOS shelter in Spain care for, foster and find new homes for the dogs in the UK and also helps several fosterers in Spain who are equally overwhelmed with Podencos and Podenco crossbreeds. The breed is very common in Spain, and often overlooked in many of the shelters. Podencos and Galgos can make brilliant pets, and SOS Animals ensures it finds the right home for these wonderful dogs. They have a detailed rehoming process which begins with an assessment of an animal, which is then matched to a home where his or her needs will be fully met. Discussion about a would-be adopter’s lifestyle, experience with dogs, and expectations

of life with a Podenco may ultimately lead to a home check and visit to meet the dog concerned at the foster home. Once a home is found, they offer full back-up and support for the new owner to ensure the dog is properly settled. Podencos are renowned escapologists, and it is not unusual for them to jump six foot high fences in a single leap: a secure garden is therefore an absolute must. They are multi-sensory hounds who are far more robust than Greyhounds, Lurchers and other sight hounds (who hunt using sight and speed primarily). They can be mischievous and full of fun, yet also watchful and gentle. Although these dogs are absolutely stunning in every way, they are not ideal companions for everyone. Specific breed needs can mean they must be rehomed in a family that already has a dog or dogs and new owners must be

aware that a Podenco may have to be on lead when not in a securely fenced location: these agile hounds require a lot of exercise and their recall can be selective at the best of times. All of the dogs rescued by SOS Animals are micro-chipped, vaccinated, neutered, and blood-tested and any medical needs taken care of. Since the establishment of SOS Animals, the organisation has found forever homes for thousands of dumped and stray dogs, the vast majority of which were Podencos. The Kid’s Club annual membership offers access to our Kids Club all year round. During term time we have an afterschool programme that runs from 16:30 to 19:30 which includes homework support and a wide variety of activities such as dance, drama, art and design and tennis at Puente Romano. Our most popular activity is definitely cooking in our amazing kitchen. In your opinion why are parents so happy with the afterschool programme? The feedback from our members has been very positive. I think the fact that we have experienced and well qualified teachers providing both the homework support and the activities is a genuine benefit. Some of our parents are not native English speakers so having a teacher available to help with the homework is very important to them. Also the fact that we can offer so many activities in one place means that parents no longer feel like a taxi service taking kids from one venue to another. What are the most popular activities for Kids? It is difficult to say as we offer so many activities. Over the summer, definitely the most popular activities were kayaking, the weekly visit of our friendly owl and eagle and the make your own pizza activity where the children pick fresh ingredients from our garden and use them to create their very own pizza with our chef. The regular table tennis tournaments and sports activities are also very popular, as well as swimming in our special organic pool. During the summer everybody loved our movie nights where we use our open air cinema.

Is there one special programme that you recommend at the Kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club?

What sort of activities can you plan for a Birthday party?

Definitely, the new Junior Master Chef programme! Kids will learn how to cook, the skills required to make a series of recipes and which ingredients to use. They will be awarded their certificates by our Michelin starred Head Chef at the end of the course.

We offer a bespoke service as there are just so many activities and themes we can plan for any event. The client shares their ideas and we share ours and we make sure they have an unforgettable birthday party.

We heard that you host Birthday parties at the Marbella Club Kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club, tell us about a recent birthday. Can you share a few highlights? The last party we had was really incredible. We had jugglers, clowns, our Owl and Eagle came too. We finished with an open air Disco complete with a DJ.

What can parents do while the kids are enjoying the party, can you cater for adults? Yes, we can in fact at the last party here we hosted 41 adults. They enjoyed great paella while the kids had fun. The group of ladies was taken for a tour around the Hospice Centre and had the opportunity to see how the different areas of the Hospice are run. They were accompanied by Maria Jesus de la Ossa, Coordinator of the Home Care Teams; Rocío Torres, Manager of Communications and Fundraising and Marisa Ballestracci, Tin Coordinator. They were shown the work carried out daily by each person within the care teams, doctors, nurses, physiotherapist, psychologists and social workers.

LOYAL LIONS CONTINUE TO SUPPORT CUDENCA HOSPICE WITH €2.500 DONATION but the club members decided to donate another 500€, bringing the total to €2,500! On behalf of Cudeca Hospice, Susan Hannam, member of the Board of Trustees and Rocío Torres, Manager of the Communications and Fundraising department, were delighted to receive these funds which will help the Hospice continue providing the special kind of caring to patients suffering from cancer and other advanced and noncurable illnesses, as well as providing support to their families. The Mijas La Cala Lions have supported Cudeca for many years and believe that it is truly a cause that lies close to the heart of anyone who has lost a loved one to cancer. The specific care which is offered makes such a big difference to the patients and their families, adding quality of life and dignity to their remaining days. The President of the Mijas La Cala Lions, Patricia Maxwell, along with members Sue and Harry Rice, visited the Cudeca Centre in Benalmádena to present the Hospice with a generous donation.

The Club held a President’s Party Night in aid of Cudeca Hospice on 21st September at the Restaurant Mijas Playa in La Cala de Mijas and thanks to a charity raffle, auction and party games, a total of €2,000 was raised on the night

FINNISH ARTIST MAIJU TIRRI EXHIBITS IN MARBELLA

Maiju Tirri, (1970) a highly regarded Contemporary Artist/ / Painter from Finland, lives and works currently in Southern Spain. She paints abstractions of the experiences and feelings she absorbs in life. The principal theme in her art is impressions from walks and journeys, but also stories of feelings that go through her mind. The wildness, mercilessness and, on the other hand, harmony of nature meet human senses in Tirri’s works. “My philosophy as an Artist is to seek harmony and goodness through beauty and grace. This I have tried to reach by picturing natural elements filtered through my own mind and feelings. Contrary to human actions nature as such is never good or evil. Everything in it is only appropriate. In my art works I have chosen my side defending goodness by putting the emphasis on the positive feelings and attitude in life. This exhibition is showing my roots in the North and my present in the South resulting in the Metamorphosis from Ice to Fire. To the spectator I like to give associations of joy, happiness and love and even feelings of meditative calmness or inspirations of flow.” Maiju Tirri has had various solo and group exhibitions around Europe, including solo exhibitions in London, Cadogan Contemporary Gallery, South Kensington 2012, Gallery Catherine Bazar at St. Paul De Vence, France 2009, Gallery Bronda, Helsinki Finland, 2011 and various other solo exhibitions in Finland. She has participated in group exhibitions in Italy, Monaco, London, UK, Spain and Finland. The Gibraltar Ministry of Culture invited her to exhibit in their Fine Arts Gallery from the 5th to the 25th of November 2013, after which she is exhibiting solo in Houses of Art, Marbella Club, Marbella from 30th of November to 11th of December. Maiju Tirri is an Art Ambassador for Finland’s Ministry of the Environment and judged an Art competition and exhibition among schools in 2011. She was also an

adjudicator in the Gibraltarian Ministry of Culture Jubilee Art Competition 2012. Her work hangs in various public and private collections in Europe, Middle East and USA. GIVE MALAGA’S ORPHANS A CHRISTMAS TO REMEMBER Kara Robertson is putting on a fundraising dinner at the beautiful Restaurante Valparaiso on Friday November 8th and all proceeds will be used to buy Christmas presents for children in care in Málaga, which should put smiles on many faces. Some amazing entertainment includes the hugely popular Frank Skott, who will have everyone dancing and the mesmerizing voice of Lucy Faye, plus beautiful belly dancer Astra.
