Welcome to autumn, Marbella style!
W
hile those further north are hauling their warmer clothes out of the cupboard in preparation for winter, we can afford to feel just a little bit smug. October in Marbella is a great month, as the humidity of the summer dissipates but the laidback vibe remains – and, since most of the visitors have returned home, it’s much easier to claim a table at your favourite café or restaurant. It is no secret that Marbella is home to some wealthy, influential people and this month we meet socialite and philanthropist Natasha Benillouche, who is dedicated to improving the lives of some very needy children. She spoke to us about some of her favourite things, including her Gift of Life Foundation, which is raising money to fund cancer treatment for children in her native Russia. The Forever Young party that she held to raise money to fund these treatments was one of the highlights of the summer. For many people on the Coast, if it’s October it must be the Mind, Body & Spirit Festival. This year’s event takes place on Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th at the H10 Andalucía Plaza and promises the usual fascinating line-up, from spiritualists and crystal healers to spinal experts. Our very own Nicola McGeorge meets the indefatigable Jacinta Anne Hannon, who is yet again in charge of organising this very popular event and recalls her experiences at last year’s gathering. We have also compiled
a brief selection of a few of the most interesting speakers. The celebs kept on coming to Marbella in September and we managed to catch up with a few of the best. Where would you see Sir Bruce Forsyth, Louis Smith, Snoop Dogg, Redfoo (visual star of dance act LMFAO), Frank Bruno and the most expensive footballer in the world together? In the pages of Society Marbella, of course!

It’s almost impossible not to envy Ian Kuah; now there is a man who is living the dream; this month he test drives the Rolls Royce Wraith and are we jealous? No, of course not. Oh, all right then – maybe just a bit.
Andrea Böck, Dr. Ian Kuah, Elle Morgan,
There are some causes that we are especially proud to support and one of these is Kim’s Animal Rescue Centre, which has had more than its fair share of problems lately. Kim and her small team of dedicated volunteers are doing an amazing job of saving the lives of animals, some of who have had the most appalling experiences. A current crisis means that Kim needs to find money for repairs and to rehome as many pets as possible. Please visit our Furry Friends pages and find out what you can do to help Kim, the team and some really gorgeous cats and dogs.

BEGINS AT
Like many Russians, socialite and philanthropist Natasha Benillouche was drawn to Marbella by the warm climate, laidback culture and relaxed pace of life. She now spends her summers here enjoying the tranquilo lifestyle and the odd fiesta or two. The glamorous 41 yearold was born in Moscow, but now resides in Paris with her husband Thierry, a property investor and their two children, Victoria six and Alexander aged four. Society Marbella finds out about Natasha’s favourite haunts, her shopping habits and her Lady Gaga shoes. When did you first come to Marbella? It was in 1998, so over 15 years ago now. I fell in love with Marbella immediately. I couldn’t believe I had found such a charming place - it looked like an oasis in the desert, it was paradise. What do you love about Marbella? I love Marbella’s sabor de la vida, or ‘taste of life’. For me that means the lovely people, the amazing food and the crazy fiestas. How has it change over the years? Marbella has undergone a complete transformation since my first visit, some of it good, some of it not. I really miss the Marbella of 10 years ago. We have lost that untouched atmosphere, which I so adored.
Why is Marbella so popular with Russians? We have such a similar mentality about everything: drink, partying and beautiful women. We feel at home here. Describe your perfect day in Marbella I would wake up late and then have breakfast in the chic MC café, adjacent to the Marbella Club Hotel. Then I would hit the Paseo Maritimo for my workout, which you cannot beat when the sun is out. In the afternoon maybe a game of tennis at the Puente Romano Tennis Club, followed by a relaxing massage in the Thalasso Spa and a siesta would definitely be on the cards. To top off this perfect day you would find me in the evening enjoying a sumptuous dinner in the classic Grill, the gourmet restaurant of the Marbella Club Hotel, which has long been a veritable culinary landmark. What are your favourite aspects of the Marbella Club Hotel and the Puente Romano Hotel?
16
I feel like I am at home there and for the past five years I haven’t changed a thing about how I spend my time at the two hotels; everything I enjoy doing in my spare time can be found within their walls. Also it’s a great place to catch up with my friends.
Which are your favourite boutiques here? My favourite shop is Frette in Marbella Club Hotel, but I really love shopping in Puerto Banús. My hot spots are Bottega Veneta, Chopard, Hermes, Loro Piana and, of course, Philippe Plein.
Which has been your ‘IT’ bag this season? I do have a handbag fetish. This season it is the Bottega Veneta “Cabat” but I’m actually expecting a new Hermes bag, which I think will take over the top spot. For the moment it’s a secret.
What do you think of revamping of Plaza Village and Del Mar in Puente Romano Hotel? I really like it. I think Plaza Village has a more open and inviting feel now, while both venues have upped the ante in the fashion stakes, attracting people who looking for the old school glamour of Marbella
Describe your style For everyday wear I prefer casualchic fashion, but Marbella puts me in a fiesta mood, so sometimes you will find me ‘glittering’ as I like to call it. However, there is one thing you can be sure about - I never take fashion too seriously.
Which A/W 2013 trends will you be wearing? This season the trends are thankfully all the things that I love - a mix of laces and wool, stylish and free shapes and pastel colours
What do you like to do in your spare time in Marbella? I enjoy anything sports related and the Marbella Club and Puente Romano hotels cover all my needs. I also take pleasure in organizing special events for my closest friends.
Which are your favourite designers? Raf Simons for Dior: he knows how to mix minimalism and flamboyance and I love the beautiful shapes Dior combines with modernity. Jean-Paul Gaultier also for his eternal inner enfant terrible - he is a genius! Karl Lagerfeld for being Karl Lagerfeld. Do I need to explain why?
Do you have a favourite pair of shoes? I have a love affair with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, in particular my shoes, which are the same ones that he created for Lady Gaga Can you share your beauty secrets with us? My beauty secrets are simple. A lot of sleep, a lot of love and as much time spent with my family as possible. I like to live in the moment.

Top ‘must have’ beauty products I can’t be without: Kusmi Tea Detox, which is blend of maté, green tea and lemongrass, perfect for the body and mind. Guerlain Baume De La Ferte Lip Balm Guerlain L’or Radiance Concentrate With Pure Gold Make-up Base My favourite perfume is Royal Musca by M. MICALLEF Which salons do you recommend in Marbella? My favourite hair colourist is David at the Vasari Centre, Puerto Banús. I have been a client for the last 10 years and I adore his cosy hair salon. For my special brushing I have my friend, Geoffrey Lo Pilato!
Where do you predict will be the next ‘place to be seen’? Café del Mar. It is a magic place with a breathtaking sea view. I chose this venue to host my recent ‘Forever Young’ event. We partied to the infectious beats of DJ Serge Devant from New York. What a night that was! Please tell us about more your Forever Young event My husband and I organized this party for our best friend. We wanted to create an event that showed off the best of Marbella in the summer, hence we chose Café del Mar for our venue. We decided on the theme ‘Forever Young,’ as in Peter Pan, because inside everyone there is a part that still believes anything is possible, just like the
fairytale. When you get in touch with your inner child the world becomes your oyster. Your charity work is obviously very close to your heart. Please tell us about the Gift of Life Foundation Working with the Gift of Life Foundation is the most important thing in my life right now. It offers hope and practical care to children and young adults whose families cannot afford treatment for cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. We have been able to save the lives of dozens of children through the provision of vital medicine and treatment. The charity provides support for children and young adults up to the aged of 25 who are Russian citizens, resident in either Russia or the CIS. In Russia, treatment for cancer and other potentially fatal diseases is only partly covered by the state. A large proportion of the cost – as much as 66 per cent – must be shouldered by families who are often living below the poverty line because their child’s illness has depleted their resources. There are examples of parents selling their homes to fund their child’s treatment. Gift of Life is also active in campaigning in Russia for better medical facilities and better access to treatment and medicines. I feel blessed to have met some amazing people who really care about the charity and I am happy to be a part of this team.
What is next for you? My biggest secret - my dream. See you there. For more information about the Gift of Life go to: www.giftoflife.eu www.podari-zhizn.ru

THE ONLY WAY IS
Marbs Reported by Nicola McGeorge
This past few months has seen a touch of glamour returning to Marbella, with a host of celebs deciding to pay us a visit, from Gareth Bale, the world’s most expensive footballer, to a VERY chilled out rapper, aka Snoop Dogg. They just can’t seem to keep away!
I was sent these snaps just after the last issue had gone to print, but I still feel it is my duty to let the world know that Snoop Dogg did actually make it to Marbella. Yes, the notorious rapper, who now wants to be known as Snoop Lion, was actually allowed to enter Spain. He has been banned from quite a few countries in his time including the UK, after being arrested for vandalising part of Heathrow Airport. Snoop, who has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, chose Sleek Nightclub in Puerto Banús, to host the European launch of Reincarnated, his Netflix film. He even tweeted “España! First time in Marbella we gettin down Sat night @sleeknightclub.” Guests were treated to a snoop-tastic session as he banged out the tunes and a live performance from the Tha Doggfather himself. Always a lawabiding citizen - NOT - Snoop was seen kindly sharing his joint with fans, while allowing videos to be taken, which are now of course on You Tube. You have to admire his style. Olympic medallist, Louis Smith seemed to be enjoying himself at the Sisu Hotel pool party. Although the 24 year-old wasn’t looking his usual buff self, he still managed to attract the attention of a string of beautiful bikini clad babes. Smoking an electronic cigar, a shisha pipe and drinking champagne he has obviously relaxed his strict fitness regime and why not? He is on holiday after all. Photos by solarpix.com

Another shot that slipped onto my desk a little too late for inclusion last month was this one of Redfoo, part of electropop duo, LMFAO. First he popped into Sisu Boutique Hotel in Banús and had his own LMFAO Pool Party and I have to say I am loving the rubber ring; this look is surely going to catch on with the Marbella-ratti. That evening he drove the crowd wild with his outrageous performance of his hit ‘Sexy and I Know It’ at Sleek Nightclub. Wearing a fetching pair metallic pink cut-off leggings, Redfoo soon stripped down to his teeny weeny pants and then brought his own mini-me onto the stage. Now that’s how to ‘Party Rock’!
commentated ringside during the fights. The 51 year-old, who remains one of Britain’s best loved sporting heroes, also donated signed memorabilia for the auction which helped to raise thousands of euros. Then it was off to the after-party at Tibu with his good friend, ‘Big’ Joe Egan, the Irish Heavyweight Boxing legend. Let’s just say there was no trouble at the club that night - know what I mean ‘arry? Sorry, I had to do it!

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Frank Bruno came over to support the MGM White Collar Boxing Event, which raises money for Aspandem. He attended the weigh-in at the MGM gym and then
Frank, who is trying to rebuild his life after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, was also spotted dining THREE times at La Sala. During the daytime he chose to make the most of the sunshine, relaxing by the pool with his Scottish hairdresser girlfriend Nina Colletta at the H10 Andalucia Plaza. Photos by solarpix.com
While Tottenham and Real Madrid were thrashing out the biggest football deal in history, where did Gareth Bale decide to hide out? Marbella of course! He and his family chose to chill out in the exclusive gated La Trinidad complex, which is situated beside King Fahd’s Palace. With security being so tight even the paps couldn’t find a way in and camped outside the main gates hoping to get that exclusive shot. Not this time I’m afraid, boys. However, some footie fans did manage to get a snap of him by the pool while he kindly signed autographs.
A rather dapper Bruce Forsyth was papped at La Sala, where he had opted for a spot of lunch in the main dining room. Didn’t he do well... choosing La Sala? He was very friendly and happy to take photos with fans and didn’t mind at all when one of the staff said to him, “Nice to see you, to see you nice!” I wonder how many times a day he hears that? What we want to know Brucie... ’was the bill higher or lower than you expected.

READ ALL ABOUT IT This month’s news snippets from around the region Images courtesy of solarpix.com The streets of Gibraltar were dotted with red and white as locals took to the the streets to celebrate National Day. Given the recent issues with neighbouring Spain, the Gibraltarians seemed more patriotic than ever. Gibraltar’s government officials took to the stage in Casemates Square and a large group of U.K. peers, MPs and MEPs attended the event. Even Prime Minister David Cameron made an appearance, courtesy of a video, declaring, “The people of Gibraltar have faced the pressures of recent months with enormous dignity. Let me assure you that the British people and my Government stand with you now. Our relationship is solid, sure and enduring.” The grand finale saw thousands of red and white balloons released into the air while Tina Turner’s, Simply The Best belted out, followed by the Gibraltarian National Anthem.
Two female British tourists were arrested in Portugal after allegedly hiring a firm to kidnap them and spice up a 40th birthday party. Lisbon police said they received numerous emergency calls from terrified witnesses who said they saw masked men force two women into a van. Police raced into action heading to Restauradores Square where things soon escalated into a dramatic car chase.
24
When the police stopped the vehicle they discovered the two women, on holiday with friends, were part of an elaborate kidnap prank. Apart from the two British women, the police also arrested four Portuguese nationals and three other men, who were involved in the fake abduction plot - and we wonder why Brits abroad get a bad name.
A libel case in which the family of Madeleine McCann are seeking £1m in damages from former Portuguese police chief, Goncalo Amaral has begun in Lisbon. Kate McCann has said she wants to “stop the damage” caused by Amaral’s book, which she believes poisoned public opinion against the family and prevented people from searching for her daughter. The book suggests that Madeleine died accidentally and implicates her parents in her death. A British psychologist who counselled Mrs McCann revealed to the court that she had contemplated suicide following the publication of the book. The case continues.
Spanish national, Justo Marquez found a very unusual way to protest about the ongoing dispute between Gibraltar and Spain. The 50 year-old spent four days carrying a 10-kilogram wooden cross in soaring temperatures all the way from Málaga to Gibraltar, an astonishing 135 kilometres. Marquez believes that only God can relieve the tension and carried a sign, which read, “No more hunger. No more war. Peace in the world”. He is currently unemployed and managed to stay with friends and supporters along the way. Once he arrived at the fence separating the two countries, he spent 24 hours praying and fasting.
The whole of Spain waited with baited breath as Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur finally agreed on the biggest deal in football history. Gareth Bale moved to Real for £86million after negotiations which lasted the entire summer transfer window. His statement on Spurs’ official website read, “I know many players talk of their desire to join the club of their boyhood dreams, but I can honestly say, this is my dream come true.” The 24 year-old scored on his debut against Villarreal and was so excited he nearly forgot to perform his signature heart celebration in tribute to childhood sweetheart, Emma RhysJones. Ah, bless.
Queen Sofia was in Cádiz presenting the battle flag for the Spanish Armada’s new warship, Juan Carlos. Wearing a traditional mantilla for this formal occasion, the Queen gave a moving speech while the naval chaplain blessed the flag. Then Her Majesty delivered the flag to the commander of the Juan Carlos I, Captain Antonio Pineiro, who received it on bended knee. The ceremony finished with the captain’s cry of “Long live Spain”.

Society Marbella brings you all the gossip and glamour straight from Hollywood
Miley Cyrus hascaused uproar last month
for her explicit twerking (a new dance craze) at the VMA awards and for the recent video release of her single, Wrecking Ball. In the video the star appears naked whilst riding a large wrecking ball on a building site and many have taken offence, as the star has many young fans. The 20 year-old singer defended her actions, saying that the nakedness is a reflection of her sad feelings, but critics still maintain that the video is attention-seeking and lewd. With the star seemingly making more and more waves with her performances, you have to wonder…what will she do next?
RATS! CONG Former TOWIE star, Mark Wright and Coronation Street actress, Michelle Keegan recently got engaged in Dubai. The good-looking couple have only been dating since the New Year but have gushed about their love for each other in recent months. Friends and even former lovers, including Michelle’s ex, The Wanted star Max George, have congratulated the pair and we are sure it will be a star-studded wedding bash.

Girls Aloud have hit the headlines again, even though they have already split up, as Kimberley Walsh has recently released a book detailing her time in the band with the other four members. In the book, entitled A Whole Lot of History, she states that she really only ever became close to Cheryl Cole and Nicola Roberts and found it very hard to get along with Nadine Coyle once she embarked on a solo career without discussing it with the other band members. She also states in the book that former manager Louis Walsh was not hands-on during their first years as a band and, because of that, she thinks they suffered. With a lot of revelations, Kimberley’s autobiography should be an interesting read!
Britney Spears has secured a gig in Las Vegas which some say could earn her up to $15 million. The 31 year-old singer has confirmed that she will be performing 50 dates over a two-year period at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino and the singer’s residency in Sin City could see her make a lot of money and restore her status as a top performer.
Khloe Kardashian

Beyonce was pulled off stage at a concert in Sao Paulo, Brazil last month before members of her security team rushed to rescue her. Ever the professional, Beyonce regained her composure once the man had been removed from the venue and continued her show with her usual aplomb and style. 28
and Lamar Odom have been in turmoil recently, if reports are to be believed. The reality star is said to be distraught over reports that her sportsman husband has not only been cheating but also has a drug problem. Several women have revealed that they have had ‘relations’ with Lamar and one woman has even stated that she lived with the star for six weeks in her hotel room while he was supposedly training away from the marital home. If sources are to be believed, Odom has been taking drugs for some time and while Khloe thought he had overcome his habit, it sadly isn’t so. Reportedly, the reality star is also hoping to help her husband but he is willing to call time on their four-year marriage.
Sources close to former Disney star Zac Efron have recently revealed that he secretly entered rehab five months ago to battle a cocaine addiction. The news will surely come as a shock to his fans, who have followed his career since he first appeared in High School Musical and have watched the previously squeaky clean actor make a name for himself in Hollywood. The star has said recently that he is now happy and healthy, so although it may come as a surprise to fans that his habit has hindered his performances in previous months, they will be pleased to know he is back on the right track.

This film is the third to be made from Stephen King’s novel and is said to resemble the events in the book more closely than the other films. For those who have never met Carrie in the novels or previous films, the story concerns a bullied girl who learns of her powers of telekinesis only to use them on her domineering mother and the bullies who have taunted her for so many years. It’s not a film for the faint-hearted but promises to be one you will remember. Cast: Hailee Steinfeld, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer

Introducing SOCIETY MARBELLA’s favourite tracks set to hit the charts this month. Union J by Union J The four-piece boy band, which made its name on reality show, The X Factor, releases its debut album this month. The self-titled album has already seen the release of its first single in June of this year, with the song, Carry You, making it to number six in the charts. The second single, Beautiful Life, will be released a week before the album. The boys have already embarked on their first UK headlining tour this summer and have been compared to One Direction.
Growing Up in Public by Professor Green Professor Green releases his third studio album this month and has said that it will display a new and different sound to that of his previous albums. Now signed to a new label, Prof. Green has said that he was able to explore music a lot more with this album and that he has deliberately not undertaken any promotional work as he wants his listeners to approach these new songs with no prior knowledge from radio and TV. The debut single was released in July and features vocals from British singer Miles Kane.
THE SPIN
Back to Forever by Lissie Lissie is an American folk rock singer who is slowly making her name in the music industry. Her first album was released in 2010 and did relatively well around the world, taking the number 12 spot in the UK album charts. This second studio album, Back to Forever, will be released this month and the singer is hoping that it will do even better. Her cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Go Your Own Way was used in the UK Twinings advert and she was also featured on Snow Patrol’s Fallen Empires album, which has helped her to gain a greater prominence in the music industry.
Take It Over by Juliette Ashby Juliette Ashby’s latest EP ‘Take It Over’ is due for release on 6th Oct. Credits for the EP include Jazzwad (Damian Marley / Movado / Elephant Man), Alan Glass (Aretha Franklin / Earth Wind & Fire) plus Atlanta’s very own Blake Eiseman and Colin Leonard. The EP can be pre-ordered from Juliette’s website. Currently writing and recording her highly anticipated debut album Ashby, who hails from north London, has signed a long-standing licensing deal with Viacom (VH1/ MTV) resulting in plays on hit TV shows including Mob Wives, Single Ladies and Basketball Wives. Thumbs up!” Cent Magazine “The 5 track ‘amuse-bouche’ EP tantalizes the eardrums and leaves the listener eagerly scavenging the net in hope of finding more gems from this songstress.” Music Vein “@JulietteAshby 5words about your gig last night: Soul, Passion, Heartfelt, Vocals, Flawless! I’ve been a lover of Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm Sticks since they launched. They are such an easy way to get colour in a balmy formula, which keeps my lips soft and hydrated throughout the day. Chubbys combine the ‘good for you’ benefits and sheer colour of a lip balm with the ease and convenience of a pencil, plus they never need a sharpener because they swivel up from the bottom – like a traditional balm. My ‘go to’ colours are the Mighty Mimosa, a delicious dewy pink and the Oversized Orange which although looks alarmingly bright on the tube, actually just adds a soft tangerine tinge to your lips. They are a TOTAL handbag essential! clinique.com

Revlon’s latest collection, ‘Evening Opulence’ features a palette of rich purples and deep emeralds for the eyes and glistening plum and fuchsia for the lips. This product line is a must-have for creating the sleek and sophisticated evening looks seen on the Autumn/Winter ‘13 catwalks. I having been rocking statement pink lips with their totally pout-a-licious ColorBurst Lipgloss in Adorned and I heart their Nail Enamel in glistening gold which gives such a luxury finish it looks more like a nail wrap than a polish. revlon.co.uk

BROW BEATEN
Regular readers will know about my peculiar eyebrow obsession. When I lived in London I used to visit the brow guru, Shavata, so that she could work her threading magic. Now that I live in Marbella it is obviously a bit extreme to fly to London just to get my eyebrows shaped, so you can imagine how ecstatic I was to find out that Shavata has now created her own Eyebrow Stencils. Containing four different shapes, this kit helps you create the perfect arch every time by either filling in or tweezing around the stencil. I love the Kylie shape, (the Liz, named after Miss Hurley is a bit too thin and b***h-like for me.) Now all I have to do is just stick the stencils to my forehead, fill in the shape with a double-ended brow pencil and I have the sleekest, most perfectly groomed arches. shavata.co.uk
The best BB creams promise to cut your a.m. beauty routine in half and Origins A Perfect World-tasking BB cream provides lightweight coverage that acts as a primer, moisturiser and foundation all wrapped up in one handy tube. Containing White Tea, which helps boost the skin’s natural defences and fight off the damaging effects of pollution, this BB cream also hydrates the skin for up to eight hours. It by no means covers the skin, but it does somehow manage to soften everything out and afterwards my skin just needed a touch of concealer under the eyes and on my pigmentation. Personally, I prefer a little more coverage, however if you have good skin that needs just a little helping hand, this would be ideal for you. origins.co.uk

ALL FOR ONE
It launched in Asia first, but has finally found its way across the continents; yes, Chanel’s CC Cream is finally here. BB and CC creams are not going away anytime soon, so you are going to have to get used to my regular reviews on the latest launches. I promise you that once you find your perfect match they will become your musthave makeup staple. With hyaluronic acid, SPF 30 and colour-correcting pigments, this CC cream bridges the gap between skincare and make-up. I advise you to build up the layers lightly until you get the require coverage. Don’t follow my lead and slap a load on, only for your partner to take one look at you and ask what on earth you have done to yourself. Used correctly it leaves a natural, flawless finish. chanel.com

ast year was my first Mind, Body and Spirit Festival experience. All I can say is – wow! Eight hours later I was still chatting away and had to be dragged Jacinta Anne out by my other half, who thought I Hannon had been kidnapped. Not only did I learn so much from the talks and exhibitors but I also met some truly amazing and inspirational people who have so much to give others. Here is a snapshot of my time at the show. who was very excited about her new

Within five minutes of arriving, the beautiful Michelle Julian, from Young Living Oils, came over to give me a hug, realised I had lost my voice and began concocting a magic potion of oils to speed up my recovery. While applying this to my throat area, Grant Foster, the International Sports Massage Therapist, tapped me on the shoulder and wanted to know why I was feeling so stressed. I explained that I was run down and spending way too much time slumped over the computer, so he showed me some exercises and stretches to help with my posture. What I would have given for a massage right there and then, but there was no chance; Grant already had back-toback appointments. This was no surprise, since this man has been known to have a two-week waiting list. On the next stand I bumped into a friend who had specifically come to the show for a reading with medium David RatcliffeFeterston and psychic Mark Bajerski, but was disappointed to find that both of them were completely full for the two days. Mental note - arrive early next year and book appointments right away. Now remember, I have only been here for half an hour. I managed to visit two more stands before spotting Elsebeth from ENN Care,

products from LifeWave. She slapped a patch on my shoulder to increase my energy and told me to come back in half an hour and let me know how I felt. I caught Phil Speirs from La Chispa magazine laughing at me. He wanted to know what was stuck to my shoulder and we soon got chatting and moved onto one of my favourite topics - organic produce. He reeled off a list of great contacts and advice on how to get organic fruit and veg direct from the farms. Time for a quick refreshment break and then I made my way over to introduce myself to the medium David RatcliffeFeterston and his stunning wife, Dawn. David was in the middle of a quick break, so he invited me to sit down for a chat. After a few minutes of small talk he said, “I am not doing a reading for you, it is too soon as I know you have just lost your father.” I promptly burst into tears. I hadn’t mentioned anything about a reading. Dawn sat cuddling me while David told me things he could never have known. How did he know that I was born three days late? That my Mum’s best friend is called Joan? That my father pulled his drip out during his last days, causing havoc for the nurses? That he was now with his youngest brother Jim? That my father was always clean shaven and prided himself on this,
yet the nurses had only half shaved him while in hospital and he didn’t like that at all? Whether you believe in it or not, I have never experienced anything like it. David wouldn’t take any money from me and to this day his says it was not a reading, but when I was ready I could come back. I made my way to the bathroom to sort myself out and ran into the amazing festival presenter and organiser, Jacinta Anne Hannon, who took one look at me and asked if I had been to see David? What is it with these people? Please note at this point I hadn’t paid anyone a penny other than my entrance ticket. This is what this show is about; bringing caring, like-minded people together to help others for the greater good. So, you can imagine how much I am really looking forward to this year’s show. To understand more about the festival I caught up with Jacinta who, as usual, is organising the event. She originally started the exhibition to bring together people interested in the more esoteric aspects of physical, mental and psychic well-being and thereby raise awareness. She wanted to empower people and encourage them to lead a happier, more peaceful and healthier life: “It really is what I love to do,” she
Mind, Body & Spirit Festival explains. “My soul’s purpose really and I use the law of attraction to attract the right people to the festival.” Jacinta was raised as a Catholic and, at the tender age of 11, she managed to get her hands on few books that could change her life. These were The Power of Positive Thinking and Creative Visualization. “They resonated with me, and that set me on the path of helping and being of service to people,” she recalls. “I live from the heart rather than the ego and I love to help people to do the same. It is very rewarding for me and I feel that I am living a life that has a purpose.” With the show growing more successful each year in the wake of the alternative health industry, I wanted to know what Jacinta’s views were.
“More and more people are awakening to the reality that we are spiritual energy beings of love and light having a human experience. We are
co-creators of our lives with divine intelligence. When a negative thought comes to my mind I say ‘cancel, clear, delete’ and when negative things happen - as they do - I say ‘behind this challenge is a glorious gift.’ It works every time. We come together because we are open to peace, love and harmony for one and all; together we make a difference.” At this year’s show you will find over 50 exhibitors, from international mediums, healers, psychics and tarot readers to unique jewellery stalls, books, nutritional therapists, health food products and much more. You can take your pick from 18 expert inspirational speakers who will be giving talks and demonstrations every half hour on topics such as spiritual me-

TESTING AND SCREENING FOR LONG TERM HEALTH
A
s a general practitioner I have worked for many years with patients suffering from different kinds of chronic diseases, especially cancer patients during all the stages of their illness. In the beginning I was only seeing latestage cancer patients. The challenge was to figure out how best to help them without creating more problems for their already depleted immune systems. That inspired us to start working with specialist labs and colleagues who use the very latest testing procedures to identify which interventions would work best for each individual patient. For more than 20 years now I have been using chemosensitivity testing to identify which chemotherapy drugs and natural substances can work best for an individual’s cancer. Tests were carried out on cancer tissue directly and, for around the last 10 years, through isolating tumour cells that circulate in the blood. From these tests we can obtain a unique, personalised picture of the patient and how their particular cancer is developing and we can offer individual therapies. This means that the patient has a more effective treatment, with fewer side effects. Alongside this technology, we developed specific immune testing to find out how we could stabilize and strengthen the patient’s immune system. Chemotherapy and radiation treatments can lead to further problems in different organs of the body so we work with patients to detox the liver, build up bowl-flora, help to support the nervous system and increase overall wellbeing. These days I also have patients coming to me with other chronic problems, which have nothing to do with cancer, such as neurological diseases, chronic fatigue, and internal problems as well as patients who want to embark upon prevention methods because they belong to high-risk groups or have historic familiar problems.
40
Patients who already have diabetes, allergies, autoimmune problems, heart problems, etc. want to have detailed tests to determine the best courses of treatment. This has been a big growth area for us, since we have achieved such good outcomes in chronically ill patients with the personalised testing and individualised treatment programmes. The same tests are also used to help patients with many of the diseases that come with age such as Alzheimer’s or are due to environmental problems, pollution or lifestyle and which affect the immune system and metabolic system. We have been working for a long time with clients from Marbella and have developed collaborative relationships with colleagues there so that we can follow up our therapies and offer a complete service as well as individual follow-up programmes for clients at home.
We can travel to see clients in Marbella for the first consultation and to take blood samples and, depending on the outcome, they visit the clinic in Munich or get a treatment programme to follow at home. Also in Marbella we are able to offer physiotherapy, massage, detox, lymphatic drainage, nutritional advice as well as ‘inner and outer anti-aging’ since this conforms with our philosophy for proper prevention and long-term wellbeing. The services that we offer are beneficial for patients who already have chronic internal problems, clients who belong to risk groups or have family histories and those who want optimal prevention. Performance Look Your Best introduces EMS Technology to Puerto Banús, a HighTech Training Method for better health, improved quality of life and surprising results
L
ook Your Best fitness and lifestyle studio opened in Puerto Banús in August to bring a highly effective personalized training method, which uses smart technology to deliver the best results, to the Costa del Sol. This exclusive studio, which is situated close to El Corte Inglés offers fast, targeted, effective personal training. It combines muscular stimulation technology (EMS), a gentle and bespoke 20- minute workout and nutritional advice for maximum results. Just one 20-minute session is equivalent to 90 to 120 minutes in the gym, so it saves time, reduces impact on joints, activates muscles and makes clients feel great. Research shows that this training is significantly more effective than a conventional fitness workout, because the impulse stimulation, combined with exercise, activates 90 per cent of muscles. Without straining tendons or joints, amazing results can be achieved no matter what the age, fitness level or health of the individual. EMS technology can be tailored to the goals of the individual, such as to burn calories and lose weight, reduce cellulite or improve endurance and strength for peak sporting performance. Studies have also shown that it is an effective way to combat back pain, help people to recover from injury, treat incontinence and it has even been used to help cardiac patients regenerate muscle and significantly improve their wellbeing and quality of life. Look Your Best has brought together a combination of this cutting edge technology, highly qualified trainers and an exclusive environment to help people achieve their goals, safely and with maximum privacy. WHAT IS EMS? EMS is a method of stimulating muscles using light and painless electric impulses. It has been in development for over 100 years for the rehabilitation of patients after injury and illness to allow
42
muscle building with limited movement. This was later applied to professional sports to allow elite athletes to improve their performance and now it has been combined with personal training and effective exercises for the best results to date. How does it work? It replicates the natural principal of our central nervous system, sending electrical impulses to control our muscle action and applies it to training for fitness and health. Electrodes, in a comfortable and easy to use body suit, activate more than 300 muscles simultaneously, including the hard to reach deep muscle layer, which protects our skeleton and improves stability. Whilst this is happening a personal trainer guides you through low-impact exercises for highly effective training results in a short time. The trainer controls each muscle group and the intensity of training according to individual goals. It is very effective, as 90 per cent of the muscles are activated simultaneously and the muscle contractions are more intense than can be achieved through exercise alone. The agonist and antagonist muscles work simultaneously and deeper muscle groups are stimulated.
Look Your Best is located in Calle Ramon Areces, Marina Banús, Edificio III Local 3, Puerto Banús and offers 25€ trial sessions for the launch period. For bookings or more information please visit: lookyourbest.es

BRINGING BACK
The Facial
Nestled within the prestigious Los Naranjos Golf Club lies the Pure Skin Beauty Room, an Aladdin’s cave for anyone who cares about skincare. Owner and self confessed skin care addict Sofia Saide explains where she draws her inspiration for providing a quality facial. “Almost 30 years ago, when I started as a trainee beauty therapist, I immediately realized the importance of looking after your skin. Most clients were middle aged and what amazed me was how wonderful their skin was. Don’t forget this was in a time before botox and the only rejuvenation solution was to go under the knife! What did these women have in common? They came for regular monthly facials and followed a meticulous skincare regime at home recommended by their beauty therapist. For the last decade it seems that this ritual has been put aside and replaced by regular quick fixes, so when I started Pure Skin, my mission was to bring back the facial. After all you can have your skin, cut, injected and pulled and stretched, but you will still have the same skin and if the quality of your skin
is good to start with, it will enhance any procedure you have done. Luckily it seems the tide is turning, thanks mainly to many celebrities coming forward with their skincare secrets. Some do opt for surgical procedures but they ALL have regular facials and a strict home-care regime. There are many fad facials around and many provide amazing results, but the main foundations of a good facial remains the same; a thorough cleanse and exfoliation. At Pure Skin we use four different types of exfoliation, which we combine according to the clients’ needs. This is followed by a bespoke steam, extraction and facial massage. Now the skin is primed, whichever treatment we apply next, be it oxygen infusion, ultrasonic or a series of treatment masks, will produce much better results. So what are the foundations of a good
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast cancer is now the most common cancer in the UK. In the UK in 2006, over 45,500 women were diagnosed with breast cancer, around 125 women a day. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women aged 34 – 54. Breast cancer has increased by more than 50% over the last 25 years. Worldwide, more than 1,000,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. The question needs to be asked again, should we continue to concentrate on procedures that can only detect an existing lump, or should we be focusing on screening methods that can warn us of a pending problem, far in advance of a lump developing? THERMAL IMAGING Over 800 peer-reviewed studies with over 300,000 women as study participants have demonstrated the efficacy of Thermal

home-care regime? Our advice is the same for everyone and this is something I learnt in NYC when I went to train with renowned facialist Ling Chan; cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate, treat and protect. As to which products to use, this will vary for each person. We work with three different ranges at the moment and our recommendation may be with one range or to mix it up. I have been very fortunate to have Clare Louise on our team; she is a qualified NVQ therapist with 15 years experience in the beauty therapy arena, a diploma in holistic therapies and has worked in five-star spas on cruise ships. We regularly work together, perfecting and tweaking our treatments to provide the best facial experience we can.” Pure Skin Beauty Tel. + 34 951 134 983 / + 34 661 279 575 at The Wellness Studio Los Naranjos Golf Club
ARE WE SCREENING or ARE WE DETECTING? Breast Screening. Studies have shown that breast thermography can detect the first potential signs of a cancer up to 10 years before any other procedure. It is: Pain Free,100% Safe, No Contact, No Radiation, Non Invasive. There are no contra-indications for Thermal Imaging making it safe for pregnant women and those with implants. Equally, it is as efficient for those under the age of 50 whose breast tissue is often too dense for the more traditional detection methods.
HOW DOES IT WORK We are aware that the body produces heat and an injury i.e. a swollen ankle or knee equals more heat. Diseased cells, e.g. cancer, usually produce much more heat in their earliest stages of development (before a tumour forms) by: * Stimulating new blood vessels to help them grow. * Re-opening unused blood vessels maintaining those blood vessels already in use. This new blood vessel formation is called Malignant Angiogenesis. With more blood flow, there is more heat. Thermal Imaging examines these “hot spots” which can be the earliest warning signs of potential cancerous activity.
This activity has been shown to begin years before a tumour or a lump forms and before any warning signs can be given by other screening methods.
WHAT CAN BE DONE At best and if caught early enough, simple life style changes may halt and reverse any abnormality and at worst and again if caught early enough, you will have choices in what to do. There is no comparison or competition between Thermal Imaging and the traditional mammogram, both “looking” for different things but surely, screening that is 100% safe and can “see” abnormalities at their earliest stages rather than lump detection is where we should be focusing? Every abnormality is not necessarily cancer but every cancer starts as an abnormality. Why wait?

The Makeup MASTER CLASS By Nicola McGeorge
I
love my job, I really do, but when one of my best friends recently quit her job as a media studies teacher because she couldn’t find her happy place and joined the circus (I am not joking) it made me think about my life. Honestly, I have never seen her happier than hanging upside down from a hoop and she really inspired me. I was never going to make such an extreme leap as she did - it’s not in my nature - but I did want to dip my toe in and learn something new. As fate would have it, that week I stumbled across the Marbella Beauty Academy’s C.I.B.T.A.C Fashion & Photographic Makeup Level 3 course. Being a journalist who specialises in health and beauty I obviously adore makeup. In my teens I used to convince my friends to let me do makeovers on them (although using white eye shadow and pink frosted lipstick on them wasn’t one of my finer moments) and this desire has never left me. The course includes bridal, theatre, period and fashion makeup, plus body painting, prosthetics and hair styling, but it was the fact that one of the tutors was international makeup artist Liza Mayne, that really piqued my interest. I have been lucky enough not only to see her in action on shoots, but she has also worked her magic on yours truly on a few occasions, so I personally know how talented she really is. If someone was going to teach me about makeup I wanted it to be Liza. At the age of 32, I was worried about going ‘back to school’ again. Would I stick out like a sore thumb as the only mature student surrounded by a giggling group of 16 year-olds? Plus my other half was declaring to anyone who would listen that I was having a midlife crisis. It took my friend posting a photo on Facebook of herself flying through the air to give me the courage I needed, I picked up the phone and enrolled.
46
After signing up to the course I decided to write a monthly diary in SOCIETY MARBELLA, which would record everything that I have learned, allowing the readers the chance to see behind the scenes at a beauty academy. As we go to print I will have only attended two classes, both theory based, so it won’t be until the next issue that you will see me actually play with any makeup. Last time I entered a school I was carrying a Head sports bag and a writing pad from the local newsagents. This time I arrived with a Prada handbag, Cath Kidston stationary and more pink folders than I knew what to do with; see, there are some benefits to studying later in life! I met with the principle of the academy, Giselle Beck-Davies, who immediately put me at ease. She is a glamorous mother hen who nurtures all her students, instilling confidence and self-belief. She gave me a quick tour and I was ecstatic to see that many of the students were my age or older. As the first few classes would be generic theory, all the students were thrown in together. The class was a mixture of different nationalities, from an English Mum who was learning reflexology to a thirty-something Russian, who planned to be a nail technician. Head Tutor Jane O’Brien was in charge of teaching us the generic theory and she worked very hard to make what could be rather boring sessions fun and interactive. I do take my hat off to all of you in the beauty industry, the theory is hard work, there is so much to learn and some parts were more like a biology lesson than beauty. For example, our session on hygiene wasn’t for the faint hearted, as we had to look at over 70 types of skin disease, which left me feeling slighlty queasy. As we reached the section on parasites I turned to see the whole class scratching. One thing the health and safety and hygiene lessons have taught me is that most salons on the Coast would
be shut down if they ever received an inspection. The standard of C.I.B.T.A.C is so high that I can count on one hand the number of salons that would meet their requirements. It really makes you think about placing your trust in a beautician and I for one will from now on make sure that I am treated by a qualified therapist. Anyway I am off to do my homework now. See you next issue when I will have got my hands dirty (in a hygienic way of course, Jane!)

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
FITNESS
gets PERSONAL T
he summer is over, we’ve probably over-indulged on the sangria and the barbecues, and now it’s time to get back to some kind of healthy living. We’re back to work, the kids are back at school, so October is a peak month for new gym memberships here on the Costa del Sol as life slowly returns to normal. But for those who find regular gym-going a drudge, or for those who simply couldn’t think of anything worse, there’s now an alternative at hand. We spoke to two clients about their first-hand experiences of getting into shape under the expert eye of Paul Isaacs, the Marbella-based Personal Trainer who will come to your home and give you a world-class workout in privacy and comfort. “Like most of the best things here on the Coast, Paul Isaacs was recommended to me by a friend”, says Linda Johnstone, who’s husband, Brian, has also become a client. “I am a working mum with a busy schedule and I just didn’t fancy dragging myself to a gym each day”, says Linda, 54. “I also knew that it would
be a real struggle to maintain my motivation over the longer-term. So Paul’s service has been a god-send to us both. I started sessions with Paul in February, and Brian was so impressed with the progress I was making and the comments I was getting about my new look, he soon signed up for twice-weekly sessions as well! Paul comes to our home twice a week with a variety of equipment and puts us through our paces. Being able
to exercise in our own home has been amazing. There are no distractions, nobody staring at me as I work up a sweat. It’s perfect for someone like me who wants a top quality service, but in absolute privacy”.
The majority of Paul’s clients come from referrals, which is how 46-year old Nicola Martin happened upon Paul’s service. “I couldn’t resist trying it out! I have just spent the summer in Marbella, and was introduced to Paul Isaacs by my sister-in-law who is a local resident. She had been training with Paul twice a week for a while and couldn’t speak too highly of him and
his methods. I am a keen ´gym-goer´ back in the UK and so was intrigued to find out what he was all about!” Nicola trained with Paul twice a week for 6 weeks and couldn’t believe the impact he made. “I have to say he was fantastic. He adapted the work outs to push me further than I would have done on my own in the gym, each session was different, and I never knew what to expect next. Each class was hard work, but was always enjoyable and I was continually surprised with how much I could actually do when gently coaxed by Paul”. Both Nicola and Linda are effusive in their praise of Paul. Nicola added,
”This summer I returned from my holidays feeling better than I have ever done, in better shape, and with a renewed sense of how far I can push myself in the gym when working out… all thanks to Paul, his inspiration and encouragement”.

Dedicated animal lover, Kara Robertson organised a fun filled charity dinner at the Restaurante Valparaiso in Mijas for Kim’s Animal Rescue Centre Fundraiser. Singers Frank Skott and Zoe Hughes kindly gave up their time and got everyone onto the dance floor while Asta showed off her amazing belly dancing moves. Everyone was happy to see Kim let her hair down for once. Some incredible prizes were donated for the raffle, in particular the sports memorabilia from Chris Adams and Louise Clark. A grand total of 3500 was raised which will pay off the vet’s bills and the balance will pay for food for the animals.

Its convenient location, halfway between Estepona and Marbella and only 10 minutes from Puerto Banús, encouraged numerous guests to attend the celebration.. Attendees were entertained by live Caribbean music and a dance group that performed to the beat of bachata and merengue, providing a touch of colour. The catering was provided by Lepanto, which was also responsible for the fantastic cocktails. FM Consulting’s founder, Fausto Martinez and his wife, Angela Schouten also used the event to launch the company’s exciting new project, Palm Point in Cap Cana (Dominican Republic). ALL WHITE ON THE NIGHT

For the third successive year MGM hosted a very successful White Collar Boxing event at the Andalucia Plaza Hotel. This year the event was once again sponsored by Linekers Group and proudly supported by the great Frank Bruno, along with Graeme Souness, Joe Egan, Johnny Nelson and Matthew Macklin himself. There were 10 fights on the night, featuring members of MGM from all walks of life who had trained hard all summer long. The fighting was of a very high standard and once more there was an explosive atmosphere. Needless to say, a good time was had by all! The event, which sold out within 24 hours, has become a firm favourite on the local calendar and this year once more raised some serious money for the local charity ASPANDEM, exceeding last year’s total of 50,000€.

DJ Alex: They’re two completely different types of work, the bar is always busy, exciting and fast paced where as DJing is an escape. I frequently ask staff the following day how they felt the night before went, hearing how busy and buzzing the bar was gives me a great sense of pride as I know the clients are enjoying themselves. What kind of music do you play? DJ Alex: I try to keep things as upto-date and modern as possible without becoming repetitive. I try and play the types of music that’d get me in the party spirit when I go out. Why do you like DJing at La Sala? DJ Alex: DJing in La Sala is a lot of fun, don’t get me wrong it is definitely a challenge but that is what I like so much about it! It all comes down to the fact that La Sala is a brilliant place, full of vibrant people and it really is a real pleasure to DJ, especially on a Saturday night!
™
On Sunday Masquerade and Vicky & Ernesto take it in turns to finish the week in style!
Who would you most like to duet with? Masquerade: Each other! That’s why we love performing together!
What style of music do you perform? Masquerade: We perform a mixture of jazz, pop and house music, we like to play all the tracks people love and can get up and dance too.
What is your favourite thing about performing at La Sala? Masquerade: It would have to be working with a fantastic team, they are all so helpful and friendly.
Who is your favourite singer in the charts right now? Masquerade: I think we would both have to agree John Newman!
What do you think makes La Sala unique? Masquerade: The cool décor, the excellent food, value for money and of course the quality music!

The LALLAN centre table combines four different materials and finishes, namely palisander veneer, black lacquer, polished brass and antique brass. All this components cross and integrate harmoniously, despite their asymmetry, to create LALLAN.
Koi by Brabbu
The Koi carp is a recurring symbol of Japanese culture, highly appreciated for its decorative qualities, not only in water gardens but also in Irezumi practice and, most commonly, in tattoos. Its natural colour mutations reveal their capacity to adapt just like this set of KOI tables with tabletops in glass or marble that you can choose to reflect your ambience. The KOI ‘scales’ on the sides of the tables shine and reflect – on its brass surface – the sun caught throughout the clear water. KOI and the Japanese word for love or affection are homophones, making the carp also a symbol of love and friendship.

Moduler by Van der Rohe
This piece, designed with geometric and minimalist lines, is made of exotic wood, the satinwood interior contrasting attractively with the exterior. This console seduces and thrills with the precision and refinement of its details. In a clear allusion to the work of the architect, the lines of this piece remind us of the remarkable work already carried out by Van der Rohe, with his distinctive and unmistakable traits.
Brasilia
This stunning piece by Malabar pays tribute to Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer’s National Congress Palace. The two 100 metre-high towers inspired Malabar to design Brasilia, where quality materials stand out, like the black glass and caviuna leaf wood. Its interior, a cellar lined with satin fabric, evokes the palace’s luxurious aspects, and the carved look completes the design. Malabar’s philosophy is staying true to the spirit of expression, imagination and poetry, clearly shown in this interpretation.

Slim – Less is more!
This console stands out for its elegant and sophisticated lines, made for a cosmopolitan environment. Slim’s appeal lies in its precise geometry and refinement. This piece makes a strong statement via the details and materials used. While outside it is wrapped in a silver coating with a high gloss lacquered finish, the interior consists of high quality wood and ebony.
“Templo” is a visual homage to Gaudi, inspired by the eccentric and unusual buildings of the Spanish artist. In the simplest environment, it exudes life and joy, conveys positive feelings and provides a unique experience of contemplation, which leads us to a different world where the imaginary expands without limits. “Templo” stands out in any room thanks to its bright colours, intriguing shapes and quirky design. It is a bar carefully hand painted, supported by a structure of noble wood, and its interior is coated in gold.
Leveza – by architect Siza Vieira
This table, fashioned from exotic wood, undeniably stands out for its elegance, sobriety and refinement. Siza Vieira brilliantly combines aesthetics and originality with this design.

ndrea Böck, leading interior designer and owner of Ambience Home Design, was commissioned to design and furnish a property in La Alzambra. “The main objective was to lend this property a contemporary and fresh feel and to play with textures and shapes in a discrete yet stylish way, maintaining calm tones throughout.” Andrea explains. For a slick modern element, Andrea chose Arketipo’s Plat sofa and Pipistrello lamps on either side to bring height and unequivocal style, while an Asian inspired textured and patterned fabric was the source of inspiration for the armchairs. For additional seating that would not obstruct the view she chose round pouffés in a silky fabric. “We used metallic voiles to dress the windows, creating a touch of glamour; their creased effect and voluptuous drop add a stunning texture whilst reflecting light.” Says Andrea. Andrea cleverly opted for two side-by-side coffee tables, as opposed to one and says “The additional space can easily be adapted for any occasion”. And, as a finishing touch, she chapters the whole area with an extra large and beautiful soft rug from India.

A reading corner was designed at the far end of the lounge and for the overall look Andrea chose a set of beautiful white lacquered wooden stumps, a modern chaise longue by Desiree and a Francoise Nielly painting for a splash of colour.

An end of bed storage bench was upholstered in a stunning geometric velvety fabric, contrasted by a simple linen armchair with stud detail, that fills the corner.
Andrea chose fine, dark, weather resistant faux wicker seating which is easy to maintain and tribal artwork to decorate the walls.

And, apart from the geopolitically-driven rise in oil prices and the prospective costs of military intervention in Syria, there is the not insignificant matter of the US Treasury’s debt ceiling of $16.7 trillion. This is expected to be reached in mid-October, after which the government, effectively unable to borrow further, will be incapable of meeting its payment obligations. To resolve the issue, bilateral agreement between Republicans and Democrats is required. The economic costs of inaction aside, the compromises that might have to be made to raise the ceiling could also be punitive. The primary drivers of this surprisingly strong development were housing and business investment: housing construction rose by 12.9% p.a. in the second quarter, its fourth consecutive doubledigit quarterly advance, while business investment soared 16.1%. In addition, inventory turnover among retailers was much higher than previously assumed, implying greater consumption.

TORQUE TALK
Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the ROLLS-ROYCE WRAITH New Rolls-Royce models are rare. This has always been the case in the company’s illustrious 107-year history, but a Rolls-Royce coupe is even more rare, which makes the new Wraith more than just a car. It is an event.
89
TORQUE TALK
You will be surprised at the sheer speed you have attained with seemingly little effort when you glance at the speedometer ... That is the magic of big torque at work, and is exactly what Rolls-Royce mean by waftability.
A
udible gasps went up when the Wraith was unveiled at this year’s Geneva Show. Some for the breath-taking elegance of its fastback shape, others no doubt because the last car they remembered with a similar outline was the Bentley R Type Continental Coupe.
ahead of the early production Ghost test car that graced my driveway three years ago. The quality of the cabin fittings back then while good, was noticeably down on the supreme standard set by the Phantom. Since then, Rolls-Royce’s entrylevel saloon has upped its game, and the Wraith takes another step forwards with the use of some innovative new woods and the option of the ‘starlight’ headlining from the Phantom Coupe.
However, if you dig a bit deeper into the history of these two great British luxury car manufacturers that were joined at the hip from 1931 to 2003, you will find that the original inspiration for this basic shape was actually the 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith with coachwork by Erdmann & Ross.
Using fibre-optics technology, the ‘starlight’ headlining features hundreds of ‘stars’ whose brightness can be controlled by a rheostat, creating a quite novel effect. From distant stars to miniature suns, this unique system easily replaces conventional interior illumination when you turn it up full. Having a personal constellation at one’s beck and call is an option few will be able to resist.
Other coach built cars that inspired its overall shape were the 1947 Cisitalia 202, and the 1951 Rolls-Royce Continental Coupe, built by Pininfarina on a Silver Dawn chassis. In fact, this was the car that inspired the 1954 Bentley R Type Continental. The latest Rolls-Royce to wear the Wraith nameplate is based on the Ghost saloon and takes its inner architecture from this car. The Ghost in turn is based on the F01 BMW 7-Series platform, complete with a modified version of its double wishbone front, and multi-link rear air suspension. Despite the extra structural stiffening required to make up for the loss of the B-pillars, the Wraith weighs about 110kg less than the Ghost. Structural rigidity remains about the same as the fourdoor. Our test route started in the middle of Vienna, where the side roads seemed that much narrower in a car of the Wraith’s physical size. However, even though the H-point of the more
90
supportive front seats has been dropped by up to 65mm compared to the Ghost, your view over the Wraith’s long prow is still a commanding one, and I had no problem placing the car in city traffic. If anything, the locals seemed to want a better view of this rare and imposing Coupe and thankfully moved further away to take it all in. And at traffic lights, I noticed the most attention was from the more senior citizens. The stop-go city traffic gave me time to drink in the peerless cabin appointments, whose detail finishing is simply leagues
I was also very taken with the large panels of Canadel wood on the rearhinged doors. A huge departure from the traditional Rolls-Royce lacquered woods both in finish and grain, the modern and dynamic appearance of this wood veneer perfectly suits the Wraith’s more sporting persona. I also love the way the door armrest and map pocket visually ‘floats’ like an object in space in the wood panel. Canadel wood is also used on the centre console with its arrow pattern pointing forwards, and in a small area between the rear seats where its arrow
TORQUE TALK
pattern points upwards. This is one of the surprise and delight attention-to-detail features that I simply adore.
Wraith’s helm has been given even more tactile feedback thanks to a wheel rim increased in thickness by 1.5mm.
In a visual counterpoint, the huge piece of wood on the dashboard is finished in piano black lacquer. Rolls-Royce says that you can have traditional woods in the Wraith, but I think that anyone who goes down that route is missing the whole point of this new interpretation of Rolls-Royce bespoke, hand-crafted interiors.
The steering rack is also a bit quicker, with a 3.04 ratio as opposed to the 3.2 turns-lock-to-lock in the Ghost, and this helps the 2,360kg leviathan feel relatively agile both in town and on the open road.
Thanks to its starting point as a shortened Ghost, rear seat head and legroom in the Wraith is generous. This is a true four-seat coupe that offers comfort over distance, and its regular-shaped 470-litre boot is certainly fit for purpose. The quiet cabin is a good backdrop for the bespoke audio system, which features 16-speakers and 1,300 watts of amplifier power. Expertly tuned by BMW engineer, Gerd Wolfrum, who made it his personal mission to deliver a good sound, this system is indeed very musical. The beautifully geared and weighted steering feel helps both in town and on the open road. One of the last cars in the BMW Group to use hydraulic rather than electric power steering, the
The Wraith can make a pretty good fist of rapid point-to-point times on winding country roads so long as you keep everything nice and smooth, also taking into account its not inconsiderable physical size. However, it would be unfair to describe the Wraith as a point-and-squirt machine that relies on its straight-line grunt to make up the time it loses in the bends, because that is far from the case. It actually has very levels of mechanical grip, and with a wheelbase shortened by 180mm, overall height down 50mm (removed from the top of the windscreen) and a 24mm wider rear track (achieved with different wheel offsets) than the Ghost, the Wraith is tangibly more agile. In fact this two-door Rolls-Royce often
surprises with the breadth and depth of its dynamic capabilities. Long distance GT it may be, but you have to really be pressing on in an untidy manner to fluster this big coupe. Get your speed down on the way into a bend, even trail braking to settle the weight over the front, and you will find the near 50/50 weight distribution and lower centre of gravity deliver a fine inherent balance. The 10-percent firmer rating built into the remapped electronic control for the air suspension comes into its own here, controlling roll and slip angles as you increase power past the apex. You will be amazed at how well the car responds as you lean on it more and more in the process of exploring its limits, and that finely honed throttle pedal helps you meter in exactly the power required. Driven rapidly in a smooth and progressive way, the Wraith stays poised and gives its driver a lot of confidence. You will be surprised at the sheer speed you have attained with seemingly little effort when you glance at the speedometer once you have straightened up. That is the magic of big torque at work, and is exactly what RollsRoyce mean by waftability.

power. That means 624 horses corralled under long prow, along with a nice round 800Nm of torque. These are the kind of numbers that you normally see attached to a major league supercar, and make the Wraith the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever.
92
Ride quality is still superb despite the uprated suspension and shorter wheelbase. The 8.5J and 9.5J x 21-inch alloy wheels on the Wraith are wrapped in the latest 255/40R21 and 285/35R21 Continental Runflat tyres, which use the brand new Conti-Seal technology. These wheels are an inch larger than the ones on the Ghost that use the previous generation Runflats.
lute terms, and more absorbent than the Bentley Continental GT, which is a more overtly sporting car anyway.
Low speed ride around town is not quite as cossetting as in the Ghost, and the larger, lower profile rubber is as much to blame here as the shorter wheelbase. But the suspension is magnificent in abso-
So where the twin-turbocharged 6,592cc BMW V12 motor delivers 563bhp at 5,250rpm with 780Nm of torque at just 1,500rpm in the Ghost, the 110kg lighter Wraith enjoys just over 10-percent more
While having the go to match the show is not always the case with mass production coupes that share their unaltered power units with a saloon in the range, Rolls-Royce considered it a pre-requisite for the Wraith.
“The extra power and torque mainly comes from an ECU remap,” explained Dr. Phil Harnett, Product Manager for Wraith. “The balance is a combination of a revised air intake design with increased ram effect, and a bespoke exhaust with lower back-pressure.” The new air intake does more than improve the engine’s breathing. It has also been acoustically tuned for a deeper and more purposeful voice that gives this elegant Coupe a soundtrack in keeping with its more sporting role in life. Thus, while the Wraith is just as silent as the Ghost at cruise, when you are accelerating hard, its raison d’etre as a more finely focused drivers’ car comes through clearly in the way the engine and chassis have been tuned for a sharper response
TORQUE TALK
This is a car that you can play VIP chauffeur in, moving away with a silky smoothness that will not spill ‘Sir’s’ drink... Nothing so vulgar as a Sport setting is to be seen on any of the Wraith’s controls. If you want to make full use of the potential of the engine and gearbox, press the ‘Low’ button on the right-hand column stalk, and you can feel the whole car sharpen its act. The seamless close ratio ZF eight-speed automatic, that is now the staple transmission across the BMW range, ensures that all you feel is one long and strong blast of smooth acceleration from zero to the electronically limited top speed. However, I have always felt that despite its understated capability in this respect, driving a Rolls-Royce means that you have
nothing left to prove. Just waft through the world in a totally relaxed manner, barely noticing everyone around you chasing their collective tails. The Italians have a nice word for this state of detachment. ‘Sprezzatura’ means the art of effortless superiority, and the Wraith certainly gives you that feeling as you glide along in your sleek steel and aluminium cocoon. As yes, steel. While most of the mainstream prestige car manufacturers, including BMW, have gone over to using large quantities of aluminium and other lightweight materials in their makeup, Rolls-Royce has not embraced it in the same way.
to a call to arms. It is this duality of nature that bestows the Wraith with a more engaging character than its four-door sibling. Step off is smooth and measured, and thanks to a very progressive throttle, velocity can be metered in as gently or as brutally as required. This is a car that you can play VIP chauffeur in, moving away with a silky smoothness that will not spill ‘Sir’s’ drink, or nail the throttle and put that pesky hot hatch jockey firmly in his place away from the lights. When your right foot is pushing the throttle pedal right into the deep carpet, the tidal wave of torque just keeps on coming, thrusting this big car to 100km/h in 4.6 sec. This is 0.3 sec second faster than the Ghost, and the electronically limited 250km/h top speed comes up very rapidly indeed.
93
TORQUE TALK
Owning and driving a Rolls-Royce Wraith is about more than just the car itself. It is about a way of life...
“Aluminium is a good material in the right application,” Phil explained, “but it has two downsides for us. The first is the fact that it is not as good in NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) suppression as steel, which is a problem when you only want to hear the proverbial clock ticking in a Rolls-Royce. The second issue is that it is not as easy to form with certain curve radii when you are making body panels.” In the end, the Wraith only has one panel in common with the Ghost. That panel is the bonnet, which, with not a hint of irony in sight, is made from aluminium. However, the Wraith is far more than just a Ghost coupe. As the kilometers slipped away under its 20-inch wheels, I felt myself bonding with this car in a way that I never did or likely ever could with the softer, less focused Ghost.
The lower seating position and thicker steering wheel rim have a lot to do with this as does the quicker steering ratio and slightly firmer chassis. In the end, I concluded that there is a synergy at work here. For me the Wraith has only one thing missing; paddle shift control over its gearbox. The latest piece of high-end BMW electronic wizardry called SAT (Satellite Aided Transmission) links the satellitenavigation system to the ECU of the ZF eight-speed gearbox. Reading the road ahead and combining it with the driver’s previous driving style, it allows the car to read the road ahead and predicts the best gear ratio for a given situation. I know that 99 percent of Wraith owners will not want or need paddle shifters, but for me, SAT or not, I consider easy manual over-ride of the gears to be an essential part of a drivers’ car. Certainly,
after showing me its polished performance I cannot but think of the Wraith in terms other than as a Rolls-Royce for keen drivers. To use a slightly hackneyed phrase, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, but that is exactly how I felt about this car both during and after my drive. At this level, emotions and subjective judgement are far more important than objective measurements such as the 0-100km/h time when you are deciding whether or not to make a £235,000 sized dent in your American Express Centurion card. This brings me to the inevitable conclusion that owning and driving a RollsRoyce Wraith is about more than just the car itself. It is about a way of life, and this is the message the Wraith so eloquently conveys as the air slips quietly around its sleek bodywork. Local dealer: Guarnieri

hen people think of Spain they think of flamenco, or ‘bull fighting’ (a complete misnomer!) Then, perhaps, ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ or ‘The Barber of Seville’, although Beaumarchais (1732-1799), who wrote the original plays, only spent a mere ten months in Madrid and never reached Seville; nor did either Mozart or Rossini who set the plays to music. (We should not forget Verdi’s “Don Carlos”, of course!) ‘Carmen’, perhaps the greatest archetypal ‘Spanish’ opera, was based on a story from the pen of Prosper Mérimée, who spent considerable time in Spain, being a close friend of the Countess of Montijo. She became the mother of the Empress Eugénie of France, and was a

and all that... By Padre Peter
native of Málaga, where she was born in 1794. It is thus more than likely that the story of Carmen that she recounted to Mérimée was based on the cigarette factory in Málaga rather than Seville, but the Frenchman thought the Seville setting more romantic! Be that as it may, the opera by Bizet is redolent with the bolero, the fandango, and breathes flamenco. And this is perhaps where we become slightly unstuck.
It cannot be doubted but that Flamenco is as Spanish as the Alhambra or the great Mezquita of Córdoba. It is at the heart of Andalusia, but this heart is largely mythi-
cal. It is the result of an essay penned in 1922 by Manuel de Falla (1876-1946), on the subject of the cante jondo, an integral part of flamenco. He sought to find its roots in the Visigothic period of Spain, with influences from the Moors and the gitanos. Walter Starkie (1894-1976) added Jews to the mix. Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) however rightly pointed out that the style was no earlier than the late 18th century and was a blend of influences in which “the emotion of history, its lasting light without dates or facts, takes refuge.” But he noted that flamenco is “one of the most gigantic creations of the Spanish people”. A view of Julio Romero de Torres’s ‘Cante Jondo’ would appear to support this view; the picture is complete with his usual naked and soulful females, men in Andalusian costume, guitar, tomb, the works! Despite flamenco’s comparatively recent appearance, dancing has a long and honourable history in Spain. In the Roman period the dancing girls of Cádiz were famed throughout the known world, and their Moorish successors swayed and throbbed with the best of them. Originally the lute was used, and Córdoba became a centre for its study and development. Alonso de Mudarra developed the instrument further in 16th century Sevilla, but by the 18th century the guitar had taken precedence, and this enabled the development of the fandango. The earliest fandango melody dates from 1705 in a selection of guitar tunes, and the earliest description of the dance itself is found in a 1712 letter by Martín Martí, a Spanish priest. There are various forms of the dance, including the fandango de Huelva and the fandango de Málaga, which are more commonly known as the Verdiales. It is interesting to note that the costume of the dancers in the Verdiales bears more than a passing resemblance to the costume of the English Morris dancers, although the first recorded instance of Morris dancing in England was in 1448. It has been claimed that the name derives from “Moorish” dance, but any Spanish influence had to wait until 1494 when the Great London Chronicle records spangled Spanish dancers performing an energetic dance before Henry VII. The link is therefore tenuous.
The word ‘flamenco’ does not in fact make an appearance until 1837, and was used to describe gypsies. It derived from a slang expression meaning ‘boaster’. It was used
specifically to describe those living in a triangle formed by Sevilla, Jerez-de-laFrontera, and Cádiz, and it has been shown that the traditional songs and dances of flamenco all derive from this area. And whilst there have been great payo (non-gypsy) exponents of the art, the greatest performers undoubtedly remain gitanos. Flamenco music is complex, and difficult to transcribe with common musical notation. It depends much on spontaneity and improvisation, yet at the same time it adheres to strict rules and conventions. To master this tradition one needs to have been born into it. There are two main types. In Cante flamenco or Cante chico, we find lyrical and light-hearted songs known as bulerías, fandangos gitanos, and malagueñas. More passionate, anguished, and deep are the “Cante jondos” or “Cante grandes”, with the siguirilla gitana and solea, which are the greatest offerings of the flamenco repertoire. In this group we find the “Saeta”, described by Starkie as an “arrow of song”, which is capable of bringing to a halt an entire Holy Week procession, as an anguished voice suddenly sends forth a paen of adoration for a particular image. The singer, the cantaor, is usually seated with palms outstretched and shaking with the face becoming redder and redder until it would appear that apoplexy is likely. The audience will join in with shouts of ¡ay! which sometimes convey genuine pain as people “live” the experience. Tapping of feet, “zapateo”, may occur, as will “tapoteo” (clapping) ; although it should be noted that whilst this tends to be prevalent amongst some audiences, these gestures are themselves a form of art. The use of the guitar has grown in importance over the years, and it is now a difficult and integral part of the entire performance, with the guitarrista interpreting and underpinning the vocal performance, whilst at the same time adopting the traditional difficult pose of holding the guitar on the thigh. In Flamenco dance, it is the hands and torso rather than the feet which convey the message. It is performed with voluptuous sensuality with intermittent outbursts of fiery passion. In its
purest form castanets are not required, but what is required is ‘duende’, described by Lorca as “a mysterious power which everyone senses and no philosopher explains”. And I’m not going to either!

PAPILLON Le Serene Setting

FOR SUMPTUOUS BEACHSIDE RESTAURANT Text by India Baltran Photos by Gregory Korvin
For location and ambience, it’s hard to beat Le Papillon Restaurante & Beach Club. Situated on the beautiful beachfront at Marbesa, it is known as one of the best places on the Coast to watch the sunset, which is reason enough to check it out.
T
he views from Le Papillon are sublime. Boasting a prime position, which offers a sweeping windswept vista of the sunset merging into the Mediterranean sea, this classy restaurant has the lot. Offering an aura of seclusion, with cosy interiors and a relatively hidden location, it’s easy to see why Le Papillion is a hit with tourists and locals alike. Recently refurbished with comfortable, chic furniture it is the perfect setting for lunch or dinner. The heated glass terrace also makes for a great winter dining venue; this really is a place for all seasons and an experience not to be missed. The largely European, but Spanish tinged menu adds to the overall experience. Most dishes are served with a twist of creativity: delicious examples include the Warm Salad of Squid and Chorizo with a zingy Lime Dressing and the Sole with Prawns, Lemon and Basil Butter.

Staff members are friendly and display an excellent knowledge of the menu, so their recommendations are spoton. The flexible table layout caters as well for couples as groups and intimate conversation is still possible even when the place is bubbling over. On the other hand, even when only half full, Le Papillon still manages to create a buzzing atmosphere, aided by the warm welcome it extends to guests who only want a cocktail or two. The new, dedicated bar area also offers its own resident gin specialist and the cocktail selection, as you might imagine, is marvellous: Mojito, Cosmopolitan, Mai Tai and – of course - sangría. Despite its upmarket ambience it is a beach bar after all and, even at a deluxe chiringuito such as this, some classics must be maintained. One of the few places to have an interesting children’s menu, the 9.95 euro option includes a main course
and dessert with choices such as Homemade Hamburgers or Spaghetti Napolitana. If you fancy making a day of it, Le Papillon also offers luxurious chill-out beds for an amazing 25 euros per day. Should you wish to relax in style, you can take advantage of a chill-out bed and a bottle of champagne (Moët & Chandon, of course) for an incredible 75 euros; the perfect romantic day out. We arrived in time to watch the sunset which, combined with our specially created gin concoctions, kick-started our evening. The meal began with a delicately perfumed Sweet Potato and Coconut Soup with Coriander, followed by lightly battered Tempura of Prawns, offset beautifully by a pungent aioli dip. For mains we feasted on the signature dish of Roasted Rack of Lamb with Rosemary and Garlic, while the Lime and Chilli Monkfish Tail with Pea Guacamole was a revelation in intense flavour matching. Make sure to leave room for dessert, because you really can’t leave without having tried the delicious puddings, which will surely give your meal the sweetest ending. We opted for the oh so naughty Eton Mess and Le Papillon brought the flavours of an English summer to our table with this clever twist on a traditional favourite. The sumptuous, indulgent, sticky mess of crunchy meringue, tart strawberries oozing their fragrant summery juices and rich cream was quintessentially a decadent treat.

ueva Andalucía has long been renowned as the home of some of the area’s finest restaurants and now, with the opening of El Banco, it looks as though this very desirable part of Marbella will attract even more visitors. Tucked away in a corner of Aloha Pueblo, El Banco has taken its name from the fact that it really was formerly a branch of Banco BBVA, but don’t worry – there is nothing boring or corporate about the interior now. El Banco’s owners, husband and wife team Gustavo Kiguelmam and Laura de Luca, have an excellent eye for detail and have transformed this space into a fresh, funky and welcoming restaurant, which is fast gaining an excellent reputation for the quality of its fusion food. With one successful restaurant already under their belts in the shape of Marbella’s buzzing beachfront La Red, Gustavo and Laura have turned their attention to offering diners an experience that takes in the best of Argentinean, Peruvian and Spanish dishes. Head Chef Giacomo Muzio hails from Peru and his skill at bringing together elements of South American and Spanish cuisine has ensured that, only weeks after its opening, the word is out that El Banco is the latest place to visit for great food.

It is difficult not to keep mentioning this restaurant’s origins (the name inevitably brought us back to it, time and again) but the warmth of the welcome from the waiting staff soon banished thoughts of balance sheets and overworked cashiers. From paying-in slips to the ideal place to chill-out – that is quite some journey, but thanks to the joint skills of Gustavo, Laura and Giacomo, it has been admirably achieved. The menu offers something for everyone, including some imaginative vegetarian dishes, with the emphasis very much on fresh, light dishes that are ideal for the local climate. The starters range from classic favourites (Gazpacho, Gambas al Pil Pil and Melon with Serrano Ham) to combinations it seems wicked not to try: the Aubergine Parmiggiana with Mozzarella, Basil, Tomato Sauce and Parmesan, in particular, sounded delicious. However, in the end we had to make a decision and opted for the fabulous Tuna Tartare Japanese Style with Red Onion, Cucumber, Sesame Seeds and Soy Sauce and the Mixed Ceviche of Sea Bream and Seafood, Limes, Chillies and Coriander served with Corn and Sweet Potatoes. This was where the care that the El Banco team had taken in sourcing their ingredients really came to the fore; the flavours were
incredibly intense, these clever combinations colliding blissfully and bursting on the tongue. The day was warm and the salad selection was so good we had to sample at least one item from the long list. In the end we decided to try the Tropical Salad with Flambéed Prawns in Brandy with Mango, Avocado, Pineapple, Coriander, Red Onions and Cocktail Sauce. Believe me, this was every bit as delicious as it sounds, the heat of the prawns perfectly offset by the glorious freshness of the salad ingredients. So far, so fishy; we just had to select something from the meat section, so eventually we agreed to share the Pork Roll Fillet filled with Spinach and Goat’s Cheese in a Red Wine Cream Sauce. Visitors to Spain frequently express their surprise at the imaginative things that local chefs do with pork, a skill that obviously extends to South America, since Giacomo and his team really managed to hit the spot with this fabulously tasty creation. The wine in the sauce was the perfect accompaniment to the almost melting quality of the pork with its perfect filling. Dessert was going to be a challenge, but a little determination goes a long way and, with a Chocolate Brownie with Ice

Cream on the menu all resistance crumbled. This was even before we had tried the Tiramisú, which, as the late Michael Winner would have said, was historic. We left feeling as though we had found a real gem of a restaurant, yet another jewel in the crown of Nueva Andalucía. When it comes to a relaxed atmosphere and fab food, you can most definitely bank on El Banco. El Banco Bar & Restaurat by La Red Urb. Bhavesh and Rajvi enjoyed a magical three day celebration filled with fun, family and friendship.
MEANT TO BE…
We were young, crazy and care free at 17 years old. We knew of each other through friends and in the few times we would bump into each other I would sometimes get a wink and a smile and he would get a little wave back. Who would have known that 17 years later, I would be married to him!

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do.
It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had Michknown ael and each other. went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me
We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.
I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.
ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…
The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain! I wanted a wedding with a difference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holiday at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

T HE FORGOT T EN ONES
All the animals on this page are desperately in need of a loving home
T INA AND CHRIS
Well good day to you - please allow us to introduce ourselves. We are Tina and Chris, brother and sister Jack Russells. We have lived the most wonderful life together until, sadly, our master died; we were devastated of course. The neighbours tried their best to help and initially took us in, but with six dogs of their own it was too much. We are very sweet and quiet with lovely manners and, at 14 years old, are OAPs, so our days of charging around the park are long gone. We still love our walks, though it’s more of a stroll than a run these days. We are craving the home comforts that we are used to and desperately need a little fuss and a lot of cuddles; we promise to reward you with all our love. We would definitely need homing together as we do not like to be separated. Did you know that we were only 30 minutes away from being put to sleep when Kim rescued us? Good timing I say. We have lots of positives; please don’t pass us by and leave us to spend the rest of our lives in kennels.
HARMONY
Just as my name suggests, I am a very chilled out and peaceful little girl, who would like nothing more than to curl up on your knee and help you relax. I have been at the shelter since I was three weeks old and I do not understand why I have never been chosen ahead of other cats. I was found in a box with my brother Diablo - we had been dumped in the campo. I remember being very thirsty and hungry and barely able to lift my head. Apparently we were both severely dehydrated and close to death. I am very sweet and love to show my affection by curling around your feet and purring. I have been through a lot and I am hoping that soon it will be my turn to be given lots of love and a home to call my own.
MANDY
KING ART HUR
Given my name I can only assume I am royalty and like to keep up appearances. I am as gentle and graceful as a member of the aristocracy should be. Members of my court here tell me I’m a lovely chap with beautiful manners but it’s all in the breeding, don’t you know? I am four years old and was being held hostage in a dreadful pace called the pound, where I was saved from death by my loyal knights. I am looking for new lodgings - a palace would be most suitable I think. You must understand that to give me all the pampering a man of nobility needs I must have your full attention at all times.
Hello potential adopters. I am a lovely lady who was very sad and bewildered in kennels. Being so small meant that kennel life is not for me and I long for a warm cosy sofa and most of all a person to snuggle up with. I am now looking for a new home and a new beginning after being found as a stray in Murcia. I am currently in foster care but I seem to have rubbed the resident dog up the wrong way; I don’t know why, as most dogs seem to like me. I think he is used to getting all the attention - men! I am housetrained, great with cats and am always happy. I think people like to be greeted with a grin and a tail wag don’t you? If you can show me how lovely life can be and offer me love and affection I will be one happy lady. Please hurry and contact Kim and speak to about the Marvellous Mandy, who needs a best friend today.
COULD Y OU BECOME A FOST ER ANGEL? Kim’s has recently had a check up by the OCA and the outcome is pretty grim to say the least. They have stated that if the requested repairs, which will cost more than 10,000 euros, are not completed within a month, they will revoke the shelter licence. Kim’s also needs to reduce the number of dogs by 50 within 30 days, so they are desperate for foster carers. Could you open your heart and home and become a Foster Angel? Kara Robertson and her animal foster family “I started fostering about seven years ago. I was a volunteer dog walker and was thinking about starting a family with my partner, Gary, when a litter of abandoned puppies came into the shelter. At only four weeks they needed bottle-feeding and I felt this was the perfect opportunity to see if I had what it took to be a mother. We fostered the five puppies and bottle-fed them every two hours.
122
Once they came of age they were all sent to Belgium for adoption. It’s always a sad time when you say goodbye to dogs and puppies that you have loved and cared for, but the pictures of them happy in their homes makes it all worthwhile. We have fostered many, many dogs over the years. We tend to opt for the litters of puppies. Although they are more work than an adult dog, they are the most at risk at the shelter and, of course, the fact that there are usually a number of them helps with the attachment issues. We have had some very sad cases and lost puppies due to different illnesses but we carry on because our help is very much needed. Fostering is incredibly important as there are always cases at shelters of dogs that are simply pining. They stop eating and are basically dying of a broken heart because the person they loved most and depended on has left them in a strange, scary place.
They are used to a real home and a foster parent can take that dog, give them love, gain their trust and show that life isn’t over for them. For puppies and kittens it’s giving them that chance to allow their small immune systems to grow. Many don’t have their mothers and have been dumped in the bins or at the side of the road, so by fostering you become that lifeline for them. I now have three and six year-old boys of my own. Fostering shows them how to care for animals and how important it is to help others in need. I have seen how caring and loving my boys have become. Now they are eager to feed stray dogs when they see them and jump out of the car with the food and water to make sure the uncatchable ones are fed. I wish more people would foster. It is an amazing feeling to know you have saved a life; it’s a real achievement.”

Furry Friends What makes all the sadness of working with abandoned, abused or neglected animals worthwhile is the success stories. Each month we will bring you uplifting and inspiring stories of the latest animals to be saved and re-homed through Kim’s Animal Rescue Centre - tissues at the ready!
Alien & Pudding By - his new Mum and Dad the Morris/Tolliday family.
We love having Alien in our family and are so pleased that we adopted him. He is such a character. He is still not great with strangers but he adores other dogs - ALL of them. He and Pudding get on so well and since Alien arrived she has been acting like a puppy again, running around the forest with him everyday like a nutter. He has made her feel young
again. She is eight and was getting a bit lazy and grumpy, but now Pudding is like a completely different dog. They are inseparable. He has become famous in Epping Forest, the breed is so rare over here that he is like a little celebrity. He has been likened to a tiny shire horse. Alien is getting more confident and independent now. Before he would sleep
on our bed, draped over our legs so that he was always touching us, but now he sleeps in his own bed like a big boy. We love him so much, he is our little/big boy; when we get home he sings to us and he sounds like a gremlin, it’s so sweet. We now have the perfect brother for our Pudding and the best little boy we could wish for.
Bobi -Sox
Bobi was less than a year old when his owner surrendered him to the pound. He was on death row, where being put to sleep was pretty much a certainly. Kim’s administrator, Karoline Barrett just happened to be picking up a pair or Samoyeds to take back to the rescue centre when Bobi spotted her. His eyes told her all she needed to know. Karoline promised there and then that she would find him the perfect forever
home and she worked and worked and worked for Bobi. His was the face of a campaign and he was shared by hundreds of people on Facebook until one day, a woman right here in Mijas Costa sent Bobi’s photo to her friend who had moved here from the UK and she fell in love instantly. Bobi now has an entire family: a Mum,
Dad and children who have adopted a second puppy so that Bobi has a friend. Bobi is the gentlest dog in the world and he has become the Lord of the house, having his every wish met with love. He is now a completely settled 18 month-old pup who is regularly groomed, walked and played with, yet he has retained his cheeky character, which makes his family fall deeper in love with him every day. What a lucky boy.
We would love to feature you and your new furry friend in the magazine! Tell us your Happy Ever After story at enquiries@iconpublishing.es

TAKING ACTION TO HELP SPAIN’S STRAYS
Tania Coates & Sam Morris
Spain is the number one holiday choice for British tourists and the most popular destination for Brits seeking to find themselves a new life, far away from the grey skies and gloom of the U.K. But behind the happy facade of sun, sand and sangria there’s a darker side to Spain: ill-treated and abandoned dogs.
about many of the Spanish breeds and traditional hunting methods, this unique book reveals little known facets of British and Spanish culture, using inside knowledge and insight at all levels.
Camper Vans, Ex-pats and Spanish Hounds - From Road Trip to Rescue, written by Tania Coates (founder of SOS Animals UK) and Sam Morris, is a groundbreaking exposé, based on firsthand experience of finding a sick and neglected stray on the side of the road. The book deals with British involvement in the Spanish stray dog problem, and also shows how the issue is being addressed by rescue organisations and volunteers, both here and in the U.K. Containing useful details
Better than any words, however, are Tania’s poignant, haunting images that portray the plight of the stunningly beautiful Spanish Galgo and Podenco breeds, amongst others, which fill the rescue centres, waiting, hoping that someone will offer them a forever home. Tania includes case studies that hearten by showing just how much can be done with motivation and the will to help.

ONE IN A MILLION Last month we reported that Sala Group was preparing to welcome its millionth customer by offering the lucky punter a 24-hour whirlwind, five-star tour of its venues. In the end the winners of this golden ticket were Aidan and Karen Chadwick from Cancelada, who were informed of their prize as they enjoyed an evening meal at La Sala. “We can’t believe it, it’s made our year!” exclaimed Karen. “We love La Sala and visit at least twice a month when we are not working. It is also our first choice when entertaining family and friends visiting from Ireland!” Since La Sala’s launch in 2010 it has truly become the place to be and be seen and has welcomed a host of international celebrities and sports stars. Karen and Aidan have a busy twentyfour hours ahead of them, as the prize includes visits to all of Sala Group’s venues including a champagne
breakfast at El Rincon de La Sala in San Pedro, a seafood lunch at boutique beach club, Sala Beach and the VIP Jacuzzi suite at nightclub, Aqwa Mist!
“This is definitely a plus of being a Sala Rewards cardholder! We thought 10 per cent off our bill at La Sala was something to smile about but this is something else… I don’t know how we will be able to eat and drink everything!” laughed Aidan. salagroupholdings.com

“We wanted to take part in the Macmillan Coffee Morning but being situated in Spain we also wanted to give something back to local cancer charity, Cudeca, as they have supported and cared for so many people dealing with cancer on the coast.” explained Sala Group Chairman, Ian Radford. “In the end we decided to try raise as much as possible and support both charities as they do such a wonderful job caring for those struggling with cancer in the UK and in Spain.”
On Friday 27th of September guests congregated in La Sala’s second dining room to enjoy tea, coffee and a selection of delicious cakes whilst browsing the pop-up fashion boutique, courtesy of Sala Beach. Puerto Banus’ newest beauty salon, Golden Tarts provided mini treatments including threading, manicures and massages with the proceeds from all the activities going directly to the charities.
