PUBLISHER’S LETTER

IT’S AUGUST ALREADY. How on earth did that happen? We must have been enjoying ourselves too much. Summer is now definitely in full swing at the SOCIETY MARBELLA offices – we have the sunburn and general feeling of having had too little sleep for several weeks as proof. All this enjoying ourselves is hard work, you know! We have already welcomed Michael Bolton to Puente Romano and have loved Bryan Adams and Jamie Cullum’s performances at Marbella’s Starlite Festival. However, August is when it all takes off and things go a bit more crazy than usual, even by summer-on-the-Costadel-Sol standards – and that, ladies and gentlemen, is very crazy indeed. So, what can we all look forward to this month? Well, we are very excited about Ne-Yo’s August the 7th date at La Sala’s massively popular Aqwa Mist venue. In an exclusive interview with SOCIETY MARBELLA ’s Nicola McGeorge he talks about working with the late Michael Jackson, his love of hats and his charitable foundation, which helps underprivileged children and teenagers. You will find that there are many things that you probably don’t know about this popular recording artist. Those of us who remember the 1980s with affection will already have bought our tickets to see Bananrama and The Human League, at Puente Romano on the 12th of August. Big hair and leg warmers, anyone?

Society Marbella published by and produced by: PUBLISHER Andy Clark DESIGNER

On the subject of celebrities, we have spotted a number of A-listers in Marbella already and, of course, anything that we see we pass on – fans of Nicole Scherzinger will be interested to discover that they might just bump into the lady herself when at the hairdresser. For the sybarites among you we feature Mustique, holiday destination of British royalty for decades, while our lucky motoring correspondent, Ian Kuah, test drives the new Mercedes S- Class and Nicola McGeorge speaks to Ling Chan, facialist to the stars. Food has also been on our minds lately. This month we visited Smallworld Café and were reminded yet again how lucky we are to have so many amazing places to eat on the Coast. There is plenty to look forward to throughout August, too. Not only will this incredible weather continue for many weeks to come, but we will also be visited by not one Iglesias but two, as both Julio and his son Enrique perform at the Starlite Festival, along with the Grammy-winning Buena Vista Social Club, old favourites UB40 and popular Spanish artistes, among them Alejandro Sanz and David Bisbal.

As Britain continues to revel in the happy atmosphere surrounding the Royal birth, there is still plenty to enjoy here in Marbella too. Until next time... Andy Clark

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

This month SOCIETY MARBELLA talks exclusively to NeYo

YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR

Hat On By Nicola McGeorge

The multi-platinum singer and song writer Ne-Yo will be heading to our shores this month for his performance at Sala Beach and Aqwa. The three-time Grammy award winner talks exclusively to Nicola McGeorge about writing with Michael Jackson, his hat fetish and a dance off with Justin Timberlake.

18

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

Ne-Yo

is certainly one of the busiest men in music, having transformed himself from songwriter to the stars to one of the most successful singers in the world in his own right. The ‘Closer’ hit maker has an impressive résumé that includes creative hook-ups with Rihanna, J.Lo and Mary J. Blige, to name just a few. Born Shaffer Smith in Camden, Arkansas and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, his stage name is taken from Keanu Reeves’s character in The Matrix. His breakthrough didn’t come until late 2004 as the co-songwriter of Mario’s “Let Me Love You”, a number one Hot 100 hit that Billboard later determined to be the eighth most successful single of the decade. He has gone onto release five albums, with hits such as “So Sick,” “Miss Independent,” and Sexy Love.” In the past year he has released his latest album RED and been awarded the Hal David Starlight Award of the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, which honours gifted songwriters who are at an apex in their careers and are making a significant impact on the music industry via their original songs

19

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT In addition to his successful careers as recording artist, music executive, philanthropist, and actor, Ne-Yo heads the Compound Foundation, which works to enhance the wellbeing of youth growing up in foster care and group homes. The Foundation’s goal is to support bright futures for young people by helping them to forge healthy relationships, pursue education and training, learn entrepreneurship basics and realise their dreams. The singer kindly cleared some time to chat about his upcoming show in Marbella. What have been your career highlights? Grammy wins and meeting some of the artists I look up to, having them tell me they appreciate my music. What inspires you? Life and everyday living inspires me. It’s something we all do and no two people do it exactly the same. Did living in Vegas influence your music? Vegas introduced me to a different variety of music, so I guess you could say that. You started your career songwriting, but which songs are you most proud of? I’m proud of all my songs as a parent would be his children, even the unsuccessful ones. What did you learn from working with Michael Jackson? What I learned from writing for MJ is that greatness is possible but you just gotta be willing to work for it. You’ve collaborated with such a long list of people - who would you like to collaborate with next? I want to collaborate with unexpected artists. I’m always trying to find the next sound that’s gonna fulfil this hunger so I can’t only look in one place.

20

“What I learned from writing for MJ is that greatness is possible but you just gotta be willing to work for it.”

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

“Life and everyday living inspires me. It’s something we all do and no two people do it exactly the same.” You are an amazing dancer. Who would win you or Justin Timberlake in a dance off? I learned to dance by watching and admiring people that dance better than me. As for a dance off, the fans would win because that would be a great show! What’s the craziest experience you’ve had with a fan?

Having kids just makes me pay even more attention to the things I choose to say and the images I choose to put out there. What makes you laugh? Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell. What or who is the most precious thing in your life? My kids.

I signed a woman’s baby once – that was kinda crazy. You’re a father of two now. Would you say parenthood has influenced your music?

What is the silliest thing you’ve ever read about yourself? That I was gay. No disrespect to gay people, but I love women entirely too much ever to be gay.

You regularly make the best dressed lists. Describe your style.

What can we expect from your show at Aqwamist?

I dress for comfort most times. I’ve learned that it’s not about who you’re wearing but how you’re wearing it.

Quality Entertainment.

Tell us about your hat fetish.

Your charity work is obviously very important to you. What is the philosophy behind The Compound Foundation?

I’ve been wearing hats pretty much since high school. My hair began thinning very early in life so I’d cover it with a hat. Now, they’re just a part of me.

I set up my foundation to give foster care and group home kids a fair shot at life. Because of their circumstance they normally don’t.

Do you have any pre-stage rituals?

What do you like about Spain?

Just a group prayer, then we get out there and get it done!

The food, the weather, the women!!

Have you ever been star struck? Yes. When I met Prince for the first time

Are you looking forward to visiting Marbella? I’m expecting a fun time to be had with great and excited people - nothing more. I’m easy to please.

Marbs

This past month has seen a touch of glamour returning to Marbella with a host of A listers deciding to pay us a visit. From the heart broken Nicole Scherzinger to ‘ard man, Danny Dyer, they just can’t seem to keep away.

Sala Beach welcomed Man City’s David Silva, who was taking a break after playing for Spain in the Confederations Cup. David enjoyed Laurent Perrier and Sala Beach’s Thai Platter for two whilst relaxing in the swim-up bar with friends. The talented sportsman kindly posed for multiple pictures with fans of all ages. He was also seen catching some rays at Ocean Club.

Chelsea and England footballer, Ashley Cole was spotted dining at La Sala restaurant. This is not his first visit to La Sala; the premiership player dined at the celebrity hotspot regularly last year. After dinner he headed downstairs to nightclub Aqwa Mist where the party continued into the early hours. Here he started off by enjoying a few quiet drinks until the group sitting next to him ordered large quantities of champagne, which kickstarted a rowdy scene, escalating into the two parties spraying champagne at each other. Ashley ended up returning to the club the following night where the same thing happened. What a great role model!

Known for his British film roles in Mean Machine, Human Traffic and The Business, actor Danny Dyer was having no trouble at all fitting into his role as an expat gangster living in Spain as he filmed his first scenes of Hollyoaks Later. We are not sure if this is his best career move but at least he got to enjoy the Spanish sun in between takes.

THE ONLY WAY IS

After strutting her stuff at the Atelier Versace catwalk during Paris Fashion Week, Naomi Campbell jetted over to Marbella courtesy of a wealthy Saudi sheikh. Having recently separated from Russian billionaire Vladislav Doronin (who was recently spotted getting up close and personal with an aspiring model who Naomi mentored), she is back on the dating market. Naomi was spotted enjoying an alfresco lunch at the recently renovated Del Mar in the Puente Romano Hotel and dining out at Restaurante Antonio, Puerto Banús in the company of her hosts.

Another newly single lady, Nicole Scherzinger, chose Marbella to recover from her recent split from Formula 1 racing driver, Lewis Hamilton. The X Factor judge had her hair styled at Dom Pastoressa in Puerto Banús before partying the night away in Olivia Valere. “Nicole was very friendly and down to earth,” praised hair artist Dom. “She was singing, dancing and improvising a song for me while she was having her hair done and then she did her makeup herself. She is even more beautiful in person, with an abundance of hair, all natural - no extensions.” Nicole chose to spend her birthday at Suite in the Puente Romano hotel, where she drank Grey Goose and danced, surrounded by security men, although unfortunately her friends were nearly removed before she realised who they were. “Don’t Cha” wish you had a friend like that!

Sam Mendes

is slated to direct the next James Bond film, which will be the 24th to date. The talented Oscar-winning director had previously said he would not be directing Bond again after the success of Skyfall, but has once again taken the reins of the well-known movie franchise. However, the film is thought to be scheduled for release in November 2015, so fans will have a long wait to see their favourite British agent tackling the baddies and saving the world once more.

It seems more and more celebrities who are getting inked this year are taking their tattoos to the extreme with very random and extravagant designs. Model of the moment Cara Delevingne recently had Made in England added to the sole of her foot, while Zayne Malik from One Direction has added to his large collection of tattoos with a picture of his girlfriend, Little Mix star Perrie Edwards’s face inked onto his arm. Let’s hope they don’t break up anytime soon or he may start to regret it!

Kelly Osbourne recently got engaged. The TV presenter, daughter of rock star Ozzy, has been with her partner Matthew Mossart since 2011 when they met at Kate Moss and Jamie Hince’s wedding. Matthew popped the question during a holiday in the Caribbean and Kelly has designed the ring herself. She had it made to resemble an earring her father used to wear as, she says, she always admired it. 24

Fans were shocked and saddened to hear about Glee star Cory Monteith’s death last month. Gleeks, as fans of the show are called, were devastated to hear how the bright young talent, 31, died in his hotel room from an alcohol and heroin overdose while in Vancouver. Many celebrities including Monteith’s co-stars took to twitter to express their sadness and send condolences to his family and girlfriend Lea Michelle, also his co-star. Before his death, the star had dealt with substance and alcohol abuse problems that he had had since his teens and had even left rehab in April and seemed to be winning his inner war.

Singer Fergie has chosen to change her name, making the nickname she acquired her legal title after using it for so many years. Born Stacey Ann Ferguson, the Black Eyed Peas member has been known as Fergie since making her mark in the music industry. However, after marrying actor Josh Duhamel, she has decided to make the change legal and add her husband’s surname, making her Fergie Duhamel. Fergie and Josh are expecting their first child this year, so the decision legally to change her name could be spurred by the desire to share the same surname as her child.

Although he recently bought her a piece of land for her 30th birthday, thereby making her a lady, the law case between Cheryl Cole and the producers of The X Factor US will see her face Simon Cowell in court soon. Cole is suing Blue Orbit Production for £3.5 million after she was sacked from the show almost as soon as she got the job. Cheryl has instructed her lawyers to question Cowell as well as L.A. Reid and Paula Abdul about how much they earned from the production company. This will help her prove how much she was offered for the job and how much she should be awarded if she wins the case.

The Royal Baby has

With all of the hype surrounding baby North West’s birth last month, the world has waited with baited breath to see Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s little girl, but she has yet to make her debut. Although Kim, Kanye and North may be enjoying all the comforts of Kim’s mother’s enormous estate while they wait for their house to be refurbished, reports suggest the stars may have left with the baby once or twice to visit friends. Other members of the famous Kardashian clan have gushed about the new addition, but middle sister Khloe has jokingly pleaded with Kim to return to the spotlight so the paparazzi start following her again, allowing Khloe some peace.

26

arrived! The wait is over and proud parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, welcomed their baby boy, George Alexander Louis at 4.04pm on Monday 22nd July. William and Kate chose the name George, which was announced two days after the birth, continuing with a traditional royal name as there have been six King Georges throughout history. The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge and is currently third in line for the throne, behind his father and grandfather Prince Charles. It is only the second time in history that there have been three successors to the throne alive at the same time as the reigning monarch, in this case Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth.

Society Marbella brings you the best of this month’s action, horror, romance and comedy. The Butler The Butler relates the real-life tale of Eugene Allen, a butler who worked in various roles at the White House for over three decades, which covered eight presidential terms. Forrest Whittaker plays Cecil Gaines, the butler in question, who begins his role in the presidential house in 1952. With a stellar cast and some A-list heavyweights also portraying historical figures, this film is sure to be both moving and inspiring and is already creating an Oscar buzz. Cast: Forrest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Gooding Jr, Vanessa Redgrave, Robin Williams, James Marsden, John Cusack, Alan Rickman, Jane Fonda, Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Percy Jackson returns in this sequel to the original 2010 film and must once again face the perils that come with being the son of the Greek god Poseidon. In this film, much like the first, Percy and his demi-god friends must battle to save their training ground, Camp Half-Blood. To do this they must embark on a journey to retrieve the Golden Fleece which has been taken to the Sea Of Monsters and face a number of challenges to get it back. Cast: Logan Lerman, Jake Abel, Stanley Tucci, Sean Bean

THE WRAP

2 Guns With two A-list actors taking the lead role in this action comedy film, it is sure to be one worth watching. Denzel Washington plays DEA Agent Bobby Trent while Mark Wahlberg is Michael Stigman of NCIS. Each man is investigating the other on the belief that he is stealing money from the mob. However, when they realise that in fact they have both been set up by the CIA, they must work together not only to return the stolen money but to stay alive. Cast: Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, James Marsden, Bill Paxton, Paula Patton

We’re the Millers What could possibly go wrong when a small time drug dealer hires three neighbours to pose as his family when he has to courier a big drug shipment from Mexico to the US? The answer is, of course, lots! David is the small time pot dealer in question who supplies soccer mums and chefs rather than teenagers, but when he’s jumped by three punks who steal all his stash it leaves him in hot water with his supplier. To keep himself from being hurt, or worse, he hires his neighbour (who is a stripper) to portray his wife, and a wannabe druggie teenage boy and a tattooed and pierced streetwise teenage girl for his kids. All they have to do is get the shipment over the border in their shiny RV but of course nothing runs that smoothly. Cast: Jason Sudekis, Jennifer Anniston, Emma Roberts and Will Poulter

Jobs Jobs is the biographical drama film that’s based on the life of Steve Jobs who died in 2011. Touching on the entrepreneur’s most defining and personal moments, his motivations and the people closest to him, the film begins with his early years and leads all the way to his triumph with Apple. Cast: Ashton Kutcher, Josh Gad, Dermot Mulroney, J.K. Simmons

28

Elysium It’s the year 2154 and, while the very wealthy part of the population live on Elysium, a high-tech utopian metropolis that’s orbiting this planet, the rest of the population live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. When car-thief-turnedfactory-worker Max de Costa has an accident, leaving him with a cancer virus, he must infiltrate a heavily protected Elysium in order to access the machines that offer an instant cure. Kidnapping a rich businessman, Max is pitted against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt and its secret police as he struggles to enter Elysium. Cast: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner

Introducing SOCIETY MARBELLA’s favourite tracks set to hit the charts this month.

Paradise Valley by John Mayer This month John Mayer releases his sixth studio album, Paradise Valley, which has already created a buzz. With music similar to his Born and Raised album that was released in 2012, it also incorporates elements of folk and Americana with influences from Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Graham Nash. His first single was released in June without much success in the charts but it was widely anticipated as it is said to be written about his former girlfriend, Taylor Swift. The album is named after a major river valley in Yellowstone River which is located in Montana, Mayer’s recent home state.

THE SPIN

Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action by Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand’s fourth studio album, Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action is said to be full of imagination, vitality and fun, capturing the essence of their very first album. It was recorded in both the Scottish studio of vocalist Alex Kapranos and guitarist and keyboard player Nick McCarthy’s Sausage studios in London. Kapranos stated that the band wanted to keep details of the album on a low profile as the previous album had been tainted by misinformation prior to its release. The first single, Right Action, was released in July on the band’s Vevo channel and reached number 39 in the US Alternative Songs Billboard chart.

Overnight by Parachute The long-awaited third studio album, Overnight, by Virginia based band Parachute is finally released this month. It has been two years since their last album took the music world by storm. The first single from the album, Can’t Help, was written by One Republic’s Ryan Tedder and was released ahead of the album. It has gone straight into the Top 30 on iTunes as well as charting at Number 1 on Twitter music, proving the band’s music has been hugely anticipated. Parachute has toured and supported many big names in the past including Kelly Clarkson and The Script and has played arenas alongside Taylor Swift and the Jonas Brothers so fans are hoping that they will headline their own tour in the very near future.

ONE TO WATCH OUT FOR X Factor winner Matt Cardle hasn’t had much success since winning the talent show but hopefully things are about to change. His next album, due for release later this year sees Matt team up with other various artists in the hope of some better chart hits. His first single Loving You is due for release this month and sees him collaborate with former Spice Girl Melanie C. The album itself is said to encompass all types of music including Rock, Funk, Soul, Gospel, Pop and Blues and Matt says it is his most diverse piece of music to date. Watch out for the album which should be released in October!

Hall of Fame by Big Sean After signing with heavyweight labels, Def Jam Records and GOOD Music headed by Kanye West, Big Sean releases his second studio album this month. The American rapper said the album, Hall of Fame, was going to be inspirational and that he wanted it to make a lasting impact on people’s lives. Hailed as one of the most anticipated albums of 2013 by MTV, Hall of Fame features many guest stars including West, Lil Wayne, Nas, Tyga and Jhene Aiko. The first single from the album, Guap, was released late last year and featured Kanye’s ad-libs but only managed to peak at number 71 on the billboard charts. The second single, Switch Up, managed to peak at number 50 while the latest single, Beware featuring Lil Wayne has only peaked so far at number 100.

Think Pink

I actually didn’t care what the perfume smelt like; I just fell for the outrageous bottle design of Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday. Echoing the singer’s signature decked out style, the fragrance imparts a playful cloud of pink floral petals that whisper the sultry warmth of vanilla, skin musks and woods. I think this perfume is more suited to the teenies though, as it’s a little too ‘candyfloss’ for me.

The Cheek of it

My find of the week has to be the AEOS Organic Crème to Powder Blush in rose. All AEOS make-up works in harmony with the natural function of your skin and is formulated with the highest quality natural and organic ingredients. This blush, which smells divine by the way, enhances the cheek’s natural healthy glow by effortlessly blending into the skin leaving a velvety luminosity and is the most natural looking pink blush I’ve ever come across. Need I say more?

Enough of your lip

I am not usually a huge fan of lip pencils just because they can be drying, but I really like NARS Satin Lip Pencils. They are packaged like crayons and I love how easy it is to be super precise with them, due to the pencil tip. Fake it ‘til you make it It’s Summertime

It’s that time of the year again – yup, Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess is back and for a limited time only. This year I opted to try out the Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Eau Fraiche Skinscent. You want the beach in a bottle? Then get this! Never has one little spritz transported me so quickly to that heady feeling of sun, sand and sea. Inspired by the warmth of the Mediterranean, the citrus floral blend with notes of bergamot and orange blossom is simply delicious. Get it while you can, as it will sell out fast.

Cover-up goes incognito! Benefit Fake Up is a hydrating crease-control concealer which works to hide dark circles and diffuse fine lines. I was a little worried about the surrounding moisturizing stick which actually outweighs the concealer, as my dark under-eye circles need as much coverage as possible. However, when combined, you get a smooth, buttery, gentle concealer that transfers easily and blends well. My only problem was it felt a little too moisturising, on the verge of being greasy and after three hours the concealer did start to crease. In my opinion this product is ideal for a more mature eye as it combats dehydrated skin and provides sheer to medium coverage in a single swipe. Just make sure you add a setting powder on top.t’s a little too ‘candyfloss’ for me.

UNDER PRESSURE

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

THE AGE OF ANXIETY

Living in the 21st century is reportedly twice as stressful as living in the 1960s. Women especially are vulnerable to high levels of stress. Today there is more pressure on us to be skinny, beautiful and have lots of money in order to be considered a success. If excessive worrying and high anxiety go untreated it can actually lead to more serious health problems. Nicola McGeorge gives her personal tips on how to deal with stress. I have always been a worrier, stressing myself out over the silliest of things. Even as a child I would make myself sick with worry. I can remember missing my own birthday party; while all the children enjoyed my Barbie cake, I was tucked up in bed with stomach cramps after convincing myself nobody would turn up.

something where I know I will have lots of time to worry about my problems, such as exercising, cleaning or cooking, I turn on an audiobook to take my mind off everything. I was listening to comedian Micky Flanagan while walking along the beach one day, and I actually dropped to the floor I was laughing that much.

I am a born pessimist. With me it’s always ‘what if…?’ In small doses, stress can help you perform under pressure and motivate you to do your best. But when you’re constantly running in emergency mode, your mind and body pay the price.

Yes, everyone did think I was crazy. Anything by Michael Mcintyre works a treat including his autobiography, also Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Jenny Colgan’s stories are full of laugh out loud moments.

In the past decade there have been at least three occasions where I have made myself physically ill with worry. Each person will react differently to stress. I get a mixture of the following symptoms: shakes, pins and needles, shortness of breath, dry mouth, palpitations, loss of appetite, nausea, broken sleep, headaches and restless leg syndrome. After a close friend of mine recently became ill after years of anxiety, I decided to write down the different techniques that help me through these difficult periods. YOU’RE JOKING Whether you’re guffawing at an episode of Friends or giggling at the latest Hangover movie, laughing does you good. Laughter is a great form of stress relief, and that’s no joke. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after. If I am feeling anxious I will incorporate as much laughter into my life as possible. I will switch to reading humorous books, especially before I go to sleep at night. I don’t usually like autobiographies but Paul O’Grady’s books had me in stitches. If I am doing

A SIMPLE ADJUSTMENT Chiropractic therapy has proven to be an effective method for treating General Anxiety Disorder, and chiropractic treatments help many people lower stress and enjoy a healthier, more balanced lifestyle. It may sound strange, but after a treatment my shakes and pins and needles disappear within a day. The chiropractor works on my upper cervical which can reduce irritation to the nerves in the central nervous system. My body seems to just relax straight away. PMS also makes me more prone to bouts of anxiety. Since the nerves that exit the lower back are responsible for regulating all of the tissues in the lower abdomen, any pressure or irritation that can be alleviated through chiropractic care can be helpful. If I have a treatment the week before menstruation it relieves the symptoms relating to PMS. I highly recommend Dr Mark Lane in San Pedro de Alcantara at the Marbella Chiropractic Clinic, marbellachiropractic.com ‘B’ GOOD TO YOURSELF The 11 members of what’s known as the vitamin B complex are critical nutrients for all things mind-related: mood, memory, even migraines can benefit from the B’s. In the right amounts, the B’s can quell anxiety, lift depression, ease PMS, and boost your energy.

People have different ways of coping with stress and most doctors recommend that you rely on a support system of friends or family, get plenty of rest and regular exercise. Also eat well, don’t smoke, and limit your caffeine and alcohol consumption

When it comes to TV, I drive my other half mad with comedies, Gavin + Stacey, The Inbetweeners, Stella and Friends all get the thumbs up.

PURPLE POWER Lavender oil contains aldehydes and esters that are very calming and sedating to the nervous system (including both the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems). These substances allow us to relax instead of getting caught in our usual anxiety downward spiral. I either put a drop on my pillow at night or, if I need it during the day, an oil diffuser works wonderfully. THE EVERYDAY HEALER Chamomile is a wonder herb. A spoonful of chamomile tea is what Peter Rabbit’s mother gave to put him to bed. Scientists have confirmed her wisdom. Containing

substances that act on the same parts of the brain and nervous system that anti-anxiety drugs affect, it promotes relaxation and reduces stress. I drink a cup of chamomile tea about half an hour before bed to help me sleep and increase this to three times daily during stressful periods. GET A MOVE ON People who exercise every day reduce their risk of anxiety and stress levels by more than 40 per cent. Try to exercise outdoors, so that you can benefit from the fresh air, sunshine and surrounding nature.

STRAIGHT TO THE POINT Acupuncture reduces levels of a protein linked to chronic stress. A U.S. study tested the effect of the ancient Chinese therapy on blood levels of the protein neuropeptide Y (NPY), which is secreted by the sympathetic nervous system in humans. Dr. Zhang on the Golden Mile has been treating me for over ten years. She is truly amazing at what she does. acupuncture-marbella.com POSITIVE THINKING Reframing our perspective can play a significant role in reducing tension and anxiety. Simple practices derived from

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can help. Unlike some other forms of therapy, CBT - an effective type of treatment for depression and anxiety disorders - focuses on a patient’s thoughts and beliefs, rather than their actions. The Centro Medico Alejandra Hallin in Marbella has a very good reputation and I know of many people who have achieved great results with them. alejandrahallin.com If you would like any advice on this subject please feel free to contact me at info@harknessmedia.com

Supermodels’

THE

SECRET BEAUTY WEAPON

New York facialist Ling Chan is the go-to person in NY for Uma Thurman, Naomi Campbell and supermodels Gisele, Agyness Deyn and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. With over 30 years experience in the industry she successfully merges traditional Asian beauty principles with state-of-the-art ingredients, blending the best of both worlds for maximum benefit to the skin. In this exclusive interview with Nicola McGeorge she talks about using Nobel Prize winning ingredients in her products, her ‘no pain no gain’ theory and treating the queen of pop, Madonna. What made you decide to get involved in the beauty industry? I was a new immigrant to New York from Hong Kong in 1974 and needed to develop a career to support my child and parents. As a teenager, I would be very meticulous with my skin, so much so that I spent hours every night picking each pore on my face in the bathroom mirror to make sure it was clean. My mom would be very concerned and yell at me for the long duration I spent in a locked bathroom and said I should one day make a living by extracting pores. I always had a strong passion for cleaning and taking care of my skin. Why did you decide to make your own product range? My facial clients would have a difficult time finding products that were suitable for their sensitive skin and many complained of allergic reactions to products that were strong in fragrance and alcohol. Thus, I decided to formula a product range by removing known irritants such alcohol, lanolin, artificial fragrance and mineral oil. Describe your product line... My product line blends East and West, as we merge Asian beauty herbs with state-of-the-art innovative ingredients. Our products are designed to hydrate the skin thoroughly. We also remove all known common irritants such as alcohol, artificial fragrance, lanolin, mineral oil and parabens. Our product line is designed to care for the skin holistically, using five skincare steps: Step One is Purify (cleansing), Step Two Hydrate (toning), Step Three Nourish (moisturising), Step Four Solve (serum to target skin concerns) and Step Five is a weekly Renewal process (mask and peels). What is so special about your COMPLETE SIGNATURE FACIAL? It thoroughly combines all the essentials for proper skin care. The two most important steps are Exfoliation and Infusion. We use multiple steps of exfoliation to rid skin of dead cells and to unclog pores. Without properly ridding skin of dead cells and removing blockage of pores,

36

products are minimally effective at best. Moisturising dead cells is not effective in bringing a healthy glow to the skin. We start with a manual abrasion with honey and almonds, followed by Glycolic acid from sugar cane, then Papaya enzymes. This is followed by thorough and skilful extraction of pores, then a non-acidic Rescue skin peel to roll off any remaining impurities. For more advanced exfoliation we use ultrasonic waves to vibrate off dead and unhealthy skin cells. Therefore, the first half of the facial is spent on a multiple process to exfoliate and clean the skin, but it is performed with minimal irritation and no downtime. The second part of the facial is spent infusing the skin with a customised serum cocktail to target clients’ skin concerns and we saturate the skin with deep hydration to diffuse any sensitivity and to bring a healthy glow back to the complexion. How does your DNA facial fight ageing? Our DNA (Do Not Age) facial uses ultrasonically infused Apple Stem Cells to help rejuvenate new skin cells. In addition, we use an ingredient called Teprenone, which won a Nobel Prize for its proven ability to extend cell life and delay aging. Skin is left firmer and the growth of healthy new skin cells is stimulated. Which are your bestselling products? Our Hydrators and collection of Serums because they are so effective in hydrating the skin and targeting specific skin concerns. Why do you use Chinese herbs? We use Chinese herbs in our face mask because Ginseng is renowned in Asia for its healing and toning properties and it’s great for brightening skin tone. You are known for combining both centuries-old Eastern techniques and cutting-edge Western technology. Which methods do you incorporate? I incorporate Asian acupressure facial massage to help blood circulation, lymphatic drainage and to promote relaxation. We follow with the latest technology such as ultrasound waves to help exfoli-

ate and infuse active ingredients into the skin cells. Why should you have a monthly facial? Our full skin cycle is 28 days. Thus, to avoid clogged pores and to accelerate the skin renewal process it is crucial to receive a good cleaning facial once a month to achieve optimally healthy skin.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Who was your first celebrity client? My first celebrity client was Madonna and I performed my signature Ginseng Herbal Facial on her. This was in the mid1980s in New York and having Madonna choose me as her facialist was quite amazing and surreal as it was the catalyst that helped me garner lots of beauty editor attention and launch my career to international recognition. Supermodel Gisele is known for her amazing skin - which of your treatments and products does she use? Gisele used our Oxygen Plasma Potion and receives the Triple Peel Ginseng Herbal Facial. What is the secret behind supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s beautiful skin? The secret is really our Ling facials and products that help her thoroughly clean the skin and hydrate to maintain a glowing complexion. You have been treating designer Alexander Wang for over seven years and he has been quoted talking about your facials being painful. Alexander Wang is referring to our thorough and precise extraction of the pores. Our aestheticians meticulously prune each pore on the face with their fingertips for blockage and impurities. There can be varying degrees of discomfort during the extraction process depending on where the clogged pores are located but clients love it, as their skin looks and feel so clean; no pain, no gain! What is your advice for women suffering from pigmentation problems? Stay out of the sun - use an umbrella to protect yourself when walking outside and use sunscreen. Also, use our Chromalight serum to reverse existing skin

damage and pigmentation from sun exposure.

but only exacerbate the oil glands and make your acne worse.

How can you improve tired looking skin? Sleep more, go bed earlier, relax your mind and use our Oxygen Plasma Potion and Apple Stem Cellular Energy serum to recharge energy into the skin.

People would be surprised to know... After I gave birth to my first son Patrick, who is now 38 years old and CEO of our company, I was so tired from being a new mom and embarking on a new career as an aesthetician, I wore two different shoes to work from sleep deprivation.

How do you get rid of dark circles around the eyes? Avoid drinking ice cold water which can weaken kidney function, which is connected to dark, puffy and baggy eyes. It sounds weird but it’s true and many clients have reported back to me that their dark, puffy eye bags vanished when they drank room temperature water instead of iced water. What advice can you give to acne sufferers? It’s no big deal and others don’t really notice and care about our acne as we do ourselves. Don’t choose products that dry your skin; it will feel good initially

You have accomplished so much: what ambitions do you have left? I want to develop a do-it-yourself facial kit and provide it to girls in the Third World to have a technique to earn a respectable and viable living. Many girls in the Third World have no positive opportunities, other than entering the sex trade. What is next for you? Launching my SOL, Spiritual Organic Lifestyle collection, which provides body products and holistic wellness techniques to promote a healthier lifestyle, which all starts from within, in our inner spa.

TOP 5 BEAUTY TIPS * Sleep is fundamental to beauty * Patience enhances outer beauty, while anger creates ugliness. It’s the law of karma. * Hydrate your skin with our deep hydrating toners. Conventional creams and lotions are less effective as they only moisturise the top layers of the skin. * Remember to exfoliate the skin gently every day, as impurities and oil can build up and cause dryness, acne and an unhealthy skin appearance. * Use sunscreen and stay out of the sun as much as possible. It might feel good, but it is very damaging to the skin. TOP 5 HEALTH TIPS * Drink hot water in preference to iced water. Hot water is a natural diuretic and helps with digestion and weight loss. Iced water weakens our kidney function which can lead to eye bags and fat accumulation. * Perform breathing meditation every day to calm and clear your mind. This can have major health benefits. * Those who are more appreciative and content in life are more healthy and beautiful. Treat yourself to a hot bath. Warming and maintaining a higher body temperature helps the body fight off germs and physical ailments. * Put others before one’s self. Studies have shown that those who overuse the words ‘I’ and “me” have higher incidences of heart attack.

Nail Art has moved up a level. It’s time to flash and flaunt it ladies It now takes more than a sparkly nail varnish to impress us and with nail wraps being rather passé, you might be wondering what will be the next talon trend to grab the beauty world’s attention? It would need to be OTT, sexy, vampish and would definitely need to make a statement. Well, we think we may have the answer; H&H is the talented duo behind a collection of nail designs which even Lady Gaga would be proud of and, boy, do these babies let your fingers do the talking!

If you can’t afford a full set, don’t worry as 2013 is all about the accent nail. Yes that’s right, this means even those of us on a budget can indulge in these devilishly beautiful metal nails. Wear on your ring finger and just varnish the rest. We would recommend a jet black polish to make your bejewelled pinkie really stand out.

Having adorned the fingertips of Beyoncé, Rihanna, Beth Ditto and Jamie Winstone and featured in fashion bibles Vogue, V, Interview and The Hunger, these creations are more like pieces of art. Designed by Holly Silius and Hannah Warner, the ostentatious talons made their catwalk debut for Thierry Mugler’s AW12/13 show. Make-up artist Holly and jewellery designer Hannah combined their professional expertise and pushed boundaries to create a stunning range of 2D and 3D metal nails under the name H&H. This innovative product is basically a reusable manicure that also doubles as jewellery for your fingernails

The brand’s third collection includes nail rings with winding rose vines and full finger and thimble designs. Once cast in solid metals, they add strength and durability to nails, allowing them to be re-worn a number of times

TIPS from a TRAINER

THE HEAT

IS ON

What better way of losing weight than running along the beach in 30 degree heat. Think of all that sweat dripping off, all that fat just melting away…..erm, not quite. Time to take a reality check!

Exercising in hot weather puts extra stress on your body. If you don’t take care when exercising in the heat, you risk serious illness. Both the exercise itself and the air temperature increase your core body temperature. To help cool itself, your body sends more blood to circulate through your skin. This leaves less blood for your muscles, which in turn increases your heart rate. If the humidity is also high, your body faces added stress because sweat doesn’t readily evaporate from your skin. That pushes your body temperature even higher. When you go out for a walk in 30-degree weather, don’t confuse the sweat that pours off your body with fat melting. It’s just water! You burn about the same amount of calories on a hot, muggy day as you do in a comfortably air conditioned gym. If you step on the scales immediately after a workout in the hot sun, you will initially weigh less, but as soon as you rehydrate, you replace the water weight. You should be drinking to quench your thirst when you workout in warmer weather anyway; and you should be doing everything you can to keep your body as cool as possible to avoid heat-related illness. If you exercise outdoors in hot weather, use these common-sense precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. Keep hydrated… Stay clear of sports drinks. They’re often loaded with calories. Ease up a little…If you’re used to working out in cooler climates, take it easy

etary ingredient, Intra-Cylane, which aims to fill gaps on the cuticle layer to plump up fine hair. In Wood Salon, the Time Reset service will include a shampoo followed by an application of Time Reset Filler Shot Phase (a concentrated Intra-Cylane treatment), a spray sealer and then a deep filler treatment which lasts up to 10 shampoos. Your best bet for healthy summertime hair is protection, but if the sun’s rays strike and you don’t have your guard up, make up for it by showing your sun-damaged hair some TLC at Wood Hairdressing Salon. Wood Salon Tel: 952 771 791/ 645 089 399 wood-hairdressing.com at first. As your body adapts to the heat, gradually increase the pace and length of your workout. Avoid the hottest part of the day… Rise early to catch the cool of the morning, or go out at sunset or later. In the heat of the afternoon, take cover under shade or jump in a pool. Wear light-colored, lightweight clothing… Dark colours absorb the heat, and heavyweight, tight-fitting clothing will also heat you up. Keep it loose. Keep it light. More air will be able to circulate over your skin, keeping you cool. Eat snacks to maintain energy… But pick snacks like fruit. The last thing you need in scorching heat are dry snacks like crackers, popcorn, or energy bars that require your body to add water. Know when to stop… I know it can be really frustrating not to finish your four-mile workout. Listen to your body. If you’re feeling weak, light-headed, dizzy or nauseous, find air-conditioned comfort fast. Finally, if it’s just too hot, stay indoors and do your resistance training!

Ambience Home Design was commissioned to design and furnish a five bedroom villa in the well-known area of Los Monteros. “The whole idea behind this project was to convert a traditional and rustic Spanish villa, into a high-end rental property with a contemporary and luxurious interior to accommodate its guests. The owner had his first guests already booked in, so the challenge was to do a 360º makeover to the property in 6 weeks time from design concept, until full delivery and installation. So pressure was on.” The concept throughout the living areas was to use a combination of greys, taupes and a splash of yellow for accent. As you walk in to the villa, Francoise Nielly artwork fills the wall and gives the entrance hall a splash of colour. Ambience cleverly used a kidney-shaped sofa to follow the curving staircase and create a reception area for guests. Coming into the lounge, a plain deep grey sofa gives the room a slick look, coupled with textured scatter cushions and appointed accessories, as key elements to complete the design scheme. Elegant white voiles dress the windows and add a fresh feel.

KEEP IT REAL

A ROOM with a

VIEW

This month, SOCIETY MARBELLA, in association with the Managing Director of Elite Estates Marbella, Aguilene Benicio, is given a full insight of an exceptional property in a unique location.

56

KEEP IT REAL A unique villa on a huge plot with panoramic sea and mountain views, situated in one of the most prestigious, soughtafter and secure urbanizations on the Golden Mile.

The house was designed by the experienced German owner himself and built in 2001.The architect was Christian Larrain, who was involved in the development of properties and palaces of Middle Eastern royal families in the area. When the gate opens, a large driveway leads past the private tennis court to the main entrance of the villa. You have the opportunity either to

park in the garage before reaching the main entrance or you may drive a little further to find the large guests’ parking space. The first thing you notice when walking through the main entrance, which is accessed by a patio, are the mesmerizing sea views through the large panoramic glass windows which separate the villa from the terrace and garden.

57

KEEP IT REAL Marbella’s ‘Milla de Oro’ or Golden Mile is probably the most desirable location on the Costa del Sol. The Golden Mile was the first area to be established in the 1960s by some of Marbella’s prominent families, as well as wealthy people from all over the world and is still considered Marbella’s most exclusive suburb. This is there where you will find the Hotel Puente Romano and Marbella Club Hotel, as well as several restaurants, many other amenities and easy access to the beach.

58

KEEP IT REAL Due to its close proximity to the city centre and Puerto BanĂşs, the area has retained its popularity and the lack of available property means that demand has always exceeded supply. 4 Bedrooms 4+2 Bathrooms 300m2 Basement, Built 880 m2 Plot 4900 m2 Panoramic Views Large swimming pool Tennis Court

This stunning Tuscan style family home consists of three floors: The ground floor hfeatures a huge split-level living/dining room area with fireplace and access to the main terrace. You will also find two en-suite bedrooms, with built-in wardrobes. One of them allows direct access to the garden through a charming private terrace. The second bedroom on the ground level overlooks the tennis court and driveway as well as part of the stunning garden and, like all of the four bedrooms featured in this villa you can also enjoy some beautiful sea and mountain views. In front of these beautifully designed bedrooms is a separate room which

COOK

in Style

They say a kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where we entertain, where friends and family gather round to enjoy wonderful flavours and memorable moments, and where great recipes are brought to life. However, we all know that a kitchen can be a bit of a dread, even for those who love to cook, especially if the layout is wrong or impractical. We spend a fair amount of time in our kitchens cooking and cleaning and we see the need to improve the space, and to make the most out of it. This is why we thought of featuring kitchens on this month’s issue. We’d like to show you some very cool designs that combine style, glamour, functionality as well as originality, and designs for both large and small spaces. So to any of you who are thinking of remodelling your kitchen, you may just want to have a peek for inspiration.

Mustique AN UNPARALLELED CARIBBEAN ESCAPE Mustique prides itself on its pristine environment. The island teems with wildlife and marine creatures offshore. Wild tortoises, hummingbirds and other exotic species roam unmolested in island gardens, tropical pastures and on its white sand beaches.

F

lowers blaze in symphonies of colour all year round. Coral fish and turtles hug the shoreline. Noble white cedars look down upon mangrove lagoons, coconut plantations and palm groves. Views from almost anywhere take the breath away. The climate remains benign virtually all year round. Mustique is one of the few remaining Caribbean islands free of hassle and hustle. There is no congestion, no traffic lights, no beach hawkers or litter, no casinos or high-rise hotels and a speed limit of 20 m.p.h. for the few cars and golf buggies on the roads. Active guests can jog fitness trails, snorkel or scuba dive the nearby reefs, ride ponies and horses from the Equestrian Centre, enjoy catamaran and sailboat cruises, or head for one of six flood-lit tennis courts. One of the world’s great golf courses is just minutes away on the adjacent island of Canouan.

66

Alternatively, you may choose to while away the days basking on golden sands, luxuriating in a four- star spa and beauty salon, wining and dining at Mustique’s seaside bars and cafés, or enjoying your own personal barbecue on the beach organized by Shogun’s staff.

SHOGUN HOUSE SHOGUN is a luxury villa set in a 5-acre tropical Caribbean garden. Perched on a hilltop 300 feet above the sparkling turquoise Caribbean Sea, it occupies a coveted position on Mustique. Twice featured in the pages of ‘Architectural Digest’ and in many travel magazines, Shogun offers two-, five-, seven-, or nine-bedroom options to discerning guests. It is the only villa on the island with its own golf course. Shogun was built by renowned architect Arne Hasselqvist as his own family residence on one of the prime lots on Mustique. The Japanese themes of tranquility and of visual harmony were the guiding principles of Arne’s architectural tour de force. While the house has been totally refurbished in the last three years, these same principles still imbue the spirit of Shogun today. ‘Architectural Digest’ magazine wrote of Shogun: “It perches like a little Japanese village surrounding a quiet pond, high

All bedrooms are en-suite and have their own veranda. They are grouped around a landscaped koi pond and flanked by a large, crescent-shaped infinity swimming pool. The dining pavilion extends out over the koi pond, which is torch-lit by night to make your evening meals an unforgettable experience. There are numerous sun-decks, shady nooks for reading and relaxing, and a media room with all the usual wide-screen accoutrements— including access to a collection of nearly 700 movies on DVD. The Wi-Fi internet

connections at Shogun are excellent. All bedrooms have individual iPod stations. Shogun’s butler and our two house managers are always on hand to assist guests, while the European-trained chef, John, will surprise and delight you with a sumptuous range of Caribbean and International dishes. If the mood takes you, allow Kelly, the power boat captain, to help you to discover and explore the delightful inlets and coves of our local Grenadine islands.

LITTLE SHOGUN A short walk away from the main house across rolling lawns is the delightful Little Shogun. A separate villa entrance from the road, lush vegetation and flowering trees adds to its sense of privacy and self-sufficiency. A two-bedroomed, self-contained cottage with its own kitchen, veranda, courtyard and sitting room, Little Shogun features a series of charming swimming pools. These comprises three cascading rock and plunge pools— together with a large sun-deck and a garden gazebo for outdoor dining. enquiries@iconpublishing.es

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the Mercedes S-Class

81

TORQUE TALK

To my eyes, this is by far the best looking and most resolved design in the current Mercedes model range.

T

he Mercedes S-Class first drive event did not actually start out that way. Since many customers will only every occupy the back seat of their cars, when we arrived at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto, we were offered a VIP chauffeur ride. After a quick scan of the line up outside the hotel I homed in on an S500L. While some of the cars had 20-inch AMG alloys, I chose one with 19-inch wheels for a better impression of the new limousine’s ride quality. The bog standard S500 in normal and LWB form has 8.0J x 18-inch wheels, but for aesthetic reasons all the test cars wore 19s or 20s. To complete my impression, I drove an S350 BlueTec on 18-inch wheels on the second day, and this did actually ride a touch better. This entry-level model comes with 8.0J x 17-inch wheel as standard, and is aesthetically challenged for the fact. However, it should also have the most cossetting ride of the lot. The W222 S-Class has presence. I caught first sight of one of our test cars on the streets even before reaching the hotel, and it stood out from the traffic with its distinctive LED daytime running lights, and sleek new aristocratic nose. Seeing the new S-Class juxtaposed with other limousines in the real world was most enlightening. With markedly softer

TORQUE TALK

“You do not set out to design a classic, but when you have one you will know it.” - Gorden Wagener, Mercedes Design Chief lines than its two main German rivals, it looks more modern and dynamic thanks to the downward sweeping feature line on its flanks. To my eyes, this is by far the best looking and most resolved design in the current Mercedes model range. In the overall scheme of things, it is also the simplest of these designs with the clearest detailing, and this is both the key to its success and what gives the car its gravitas. It looks to the manor born, where the flagship role of its rivals seems somehow contrived.

The new interior design language, interpreted with high quality leather on all surfaces, perfectly blends the traditional with the future, leapfrogging the evolutionary ‘safe’ cabins of rivals from Audi and BMW, as well as the new Bentley Flying Spur. The driving position can be tailored for most people thanks to a full range of seat and steering column adjustability, but the end result is a commanding position that you can occupy for hours without fatigue.

A 19 or 20-inch wheel equipped S-Class looks better proportioned and thus ‘smaller’ than one with 17 or 18-inch wheels, but you need a familiar car next to it to see that the new Mercedes flagship is every bit as large as its predecessor. The W222 S-Class looks more modern than its rivals, and its soft but bold lines mark it out as the only car in this segment that stands a good chance of becoming a classic. As Mercedes Design Chief, Gorden Wagener, said to me last year, “You do not set out to design a classic, but when you have one you will know it.” The quality of design and construction of the cabin in the W221 model was good, but the new car takes the meaning of the word to the next level and beyond.

83

TORQUE TALK

The design of the dashboard, door trims and every single button and switch has been considered at a level never seen before in a Mercedes, with hard plastic, the blight of modern car interiors, notably absent. Everything here that you see and touch is leather, wood or aluminium and the ambience of sheer luxury is the most relentless you will find this side of a Bentley or Rolls Royce. However, in this case, the delight of being in this cabin is not simply down to the materials and how they come together, but also a new design language that perfectly melds high-tech features like the laterally combined instrument panel and COMAND screen into an environment upholstered in traditional materials like leather and wood. This feature is backlit at night and appears to ‘float’ within the dashboard. It is this three-dimensional quality of its cabin design that stands the new S-Class apart from rivals whose finely dressed cabins have barely escaped the 20th Century. With a choice of four colours you can alter the backlighting according to your mood at the time. For maximum versatility, the new S-Class offers five rear seat options, and I picked

84

a car fitted with the Executive rear seat, which features a backrest angle adjustable by up to 43.5 degrees. In the normal upright position you can work on the fold out table that lives in the extended centre console. When your work is done, you can then fully recline the seat, and stretch out in an airline Business Class style. Well almost, since until the extended wheelbase version arrives, the actual amount of room is limited. This facility requires the front passenger seat to be motored fully forwards and tilted. This takes about a minute to complete fully, during which time it is obvious that several electric motors are working away, reconfiguring both the front and rear seats to maximise every millimetre of available space. At full stretch, the seat comfortably took my 1.7m frame, but very tall occupants would have to bend their legs. Using this feature reduces the cabin to a threeseats including the driver. The one downside of this rear seat versatility is the loss of 30 litres of boot space compared to the W221 model, because the adjustable rear seat options required the rear bulkhead to be moved slightly aft. Even so, the 530 litres of the regular shaped compartment is still ahead of

the 500 litres and 510 litres of the BMW 7-Series and Audi A8 respectively. However, if you are contemplating the Hybrid version, the bad news is the loss of 90 litres of boot space to the Lithium Ion battery pack, a problem common to all such cars including the Lexus LS600. This is a big issue for VIP chauffeurs who want to play the economy, emissions and space games at the same time. Like the UK, Toronto’s urban roads have suffered from a long, hard winter, and provided a good test for the redefined Airmatic suspension with Magic Body Control. For now, the latter is an option on V8 models only. Magic Body Control is certainly the most interesting technical feature on the new S-Class. It uses stereo cameras at the top of the windscreen to map the surface on the road ahead and adjusts the Airmatic suspension accordingly. If it detects a speed bump for instance, it will raise the ride height, providing maximum spring travel to take the sting out of the bump. At this early stage, the system, which only works in the suspension’s Comfort mode, needs five meters clear in front of the car with straight wheels, and only reads the

TORQUE TALK

actual path on the road the wheels will drive over. It works perfectly when you drive in a straight line towards a speed bump, but not if you encounter a speed bump right after a corner. In its latest form, the Airmatic suspension now has infinitely variable adjustment within its performance envelope rather than the four pre-set steps of the previous versions. This delivers faster and more accurate reactions to a changing road surface, resulting in better ride quality and poise for a given situation. I asked my chauffeur to set off in Comfort mode and closed my eyes to maximise my seat of the pants feel for the road surface. Within a few hundred yards, I came to the conclusion that the secondary ride is really impressive, building on the strengths of the W221 model, but with even better isolation.

Magic Body Control is certainly the most interesting technical feature on the new S-Class.

The big surprise was the good ride in Sport mode, which sharpens up the engine and gearbox response as well as the suspension’s bounce and rebound control. While a VIP chauffeur would not normally choose this mode unless his boss was in a tearing hurry, the better damper control removes the small but just perceptible vestiges of body movement you experience over certain types of low speed bumps in Comfort mode. There are two levels of the optional Burmester audio system, and my test car came with the top-of-the-line Burmester High-End 3D Surround System with 24 speakers and 1,500 Watts of amplifier power. With my familiar jazz and classic test discs, this sounded sublime and just played music in a laid back manner with a stunning amount of detail and ambi-

ence all in the right places. It also has plenty of headroom, and the trick that Burmester have mastered is keeping the sound smooth at high volume levels, avoiding the typical in-car audio shrillness when the wick is turned up. With 455hp and 700Nm of torque, the 4,663cc twin-turbo V8 in the S500L wafts you along on a wave of torque and is the perfect match for the silken ride. The V8 motor has always been the best choice for the S-Class and this one proves that nothing has changed. As you pick up speed, the supreme body control reinforces the feeling of unimpeachable stability while hardly diluting the cars ability to absorb road undulations. This is a personal opinion, and no doubt some will favour the Comfort setting.

Overall, the iron-fisted grip on body movement in Sport mode is more apparent at speed where this huge car belies its bulk when being driven sportingly on fast country roads. North American roads are of course wider, which gives the S500L the room to stretch its legs. The feeling of agility and a turn of speed that will please the enthusiast driver are amazing for a car of this size, while its composure is simply amazing. As with all S-Class models, the steering is light but perfectly geared to the chassis turn-in rate, and delivers enough feel for you to accurately place the car in bends. The counterpoint is a cosseting sense of serenity that makes this the perfect car for crossing continents in supreme comfort. In terms of sheer speed, the 0-100km/h time of 4.8 sec from the S500L equals many

85

TORQUE TALK

...The ambience of sheer luxury is the most relentless you will find this side of a Bentley or Rolls Royce. a 1990s supercar, and without the electronically limited 250km/h top speed, the super low drag coefficient of just 0.24 would likely see the car top 180mph. The flipside of the performance coin is amazing fuel economy when driven normally. Mercedes claim 8.6 L/100km as an NEDC average with CO2 emissions of 199g/km. Speaking of economy, I also had the chance to drive the S300 BlueTec Hybrid, which as before is powered by the 2,143cc four-cylinder diesel with 204hp and 500Nm of torque.

With the electric motor contributing an extra 26hp and 250Nm of torque, you can choose from sprinting to 100km/h in 7.6 sec or stringing out a miserly 4.4 L/100km consumption with just 115g/km of CO2. This puts the S300 BlueTec Hybrid in the A+ Energy efficiency class. In isolation, this model has adequate performance and is a great motorway cruiser. It is also the ideal city limousine, as it does not have so much low-end grunt that ‘Sir and Madam’ will spill their drinks should James be indiscrete with the throttle away from the lights.

I also drove a S350 BlueTec rapidly across country and was pleasantly surprised at the crispness, thrust and refinement of the 2,987cc V6, diesel, which makes its 258hp at 3,600rpm and 620Nm between 1,600 and 2,400rpm. The 100kg weight saving over the previous S-Class makes a palpable difference, and while the 6.8 sec 0-100km/h sprint may not set the world alight, the car performs this stopwatch challenge with a willing and sporting spirit, and never feels like it is being asked to do something it is not suited to. Torque is the key here, and is something the punchy V6 turbo-diesel engine has in spades. With a raft of optional hardware there for the asking, the new S-Class is a technological tour de force on wheels. It is a master class in how to move the flagship limousine game into the 21st Century, delivering that all-important surprise and delight factor, along with a real sense of occasion. Even without the bells and whistles, it is clear that the latest S-Class has raised the bar yet again. But perhaps the biggest worry for rivals from Audi to Bentley is the fact that Mercedes has planned for the new S-Class range to span more than just one class. Local dealer: Benet S.L.

mallworld Café, that ever popular meeting point on the Istán road, will be able to welcome even more diners from now on. The management recently announced that it had listened to the demands of customers and is offering the café’s famous dishes from 9:30 to midnight every day. This is likely to win Smallworld Café even more enthusiasts, not that this very successful venue needs any more recommendations. In the comparatively short period of its existence its varied menu, promotion of fresh produce and light, airy interior (plus plentiful outside areas) has created a core of eager fans. Now its new opening hours can only help to draw in late lunchers and the afternoon tea crowd, lured by its famously delicious cakes and desserts. To coincide with the longer opening hours, the menu has been revamped to include some new dishes, all of which reflect the SmallWorld philosophy of fresh, healthy ingredients, imaginatively prepared and artistically served. As an additional summer inducement, the management has also extended the outdoor terrace area, giving diners the perfect excuse to stay to enjoy Marbella’s perfect weather. The SOCIETY MARBELLA food tasting team was very much looking forward

90

to its recent visit, since our tastebuds had been whipped up into a state of eager anticipation. Smallworld Café is the type of place that has benefitted hugely from an army of avid supporters who have made it their job to pass on word about the tasty food and friendly service. The menu’s scope is impressive in itself: even the children’s section, which in so many restaurants is the place where chicken nuggets, fish fingers and bangers and mash go to die, offers some truly imaginative alternatives which, for a surcharge, the adults can also enjoy. Having selected a table outside to make the most of the weather, we took our time while making our selections. Choosing just one meal was a very difficult decision, so we had to send the waiter away several times before we were ready to order – his patience verged on the saintly. In the end we settled on the Chicken Satay Skewers, served with a Mixed Green Salad; the chicken was perfectly cooked and the fresh salad was just what we needed on a baking hot Marbella day. The other starter was the memorable Grilled Tiger Prawns which were served with a Pomegranate, Mango and Pink Grapefruit Salad. Over the years I have heard many Marbella residents

COSTA CUISINE

complaining that the heat caused their appetites to shrink and this was a brilliant answer to that problem. These cool, fresh flavours formed the perfect antidote to the high temperature and were so delicious that even the most jaded palate could not possibly resist them. We chose contrasting main courses: the Nicoise Salad with Seared Red Tuna, Mixed Leaves, Green Beans, Boiled New Potatoes, Black Olives and Boiled Egg, doused with a Lemon and Mustard Dressing and Chives allowed us a lighter alternative to our primary choices. We can thoroughly recommend the 2 Mini Beef Burgers, one served with Smoked Mozzarella, Red Onion, Tomato, Pickles and Mayo and the other with Spicy Tomato Chutney and Mixed Leaves. We also ordered the Spaghetti Frutti di Mare with Tiger Prawns, New Zealand Mussels, Grilled Squid, Cherry Tomatoes, Garlic, White Wine, Chilli and Fresh Parsley. We were impressed that a gluten-free pasta alternative was available for diners with food intolerances. This was a culinary delight, the flavours combining beautifully and adding a very Spanish twist to an Italian classic and it would have been a sin to leave even a mouthful. Of course, all of this eating resulted in an extended break – for a while we could not find room for another

mouthful, so we slowly finished our drinks and enjoyed the atmosphere. When we finally recovered we decided that a combination of sour and sweet might be a good thing, so we opted for the Zesty Key Lime Pie with Raspberry Sorbet. This was utterly delicious, the pastry melting in the mouth and the lime filling just tart enough to refresh our slightly overloaded tastebuds. The Dame Blanche (three scoops of Vanilla Ice Cream with Hot Chocolate Fudge and Crumbled Brownies) was more robust, but with a lot of willpower and determination we managed to do it justice. The fact that SmallWorld Café will be open almost 12 hours a day from now on can only be a good thing for the people of Marbella. This family-friendly, yet sophisticated restaurant is a great place to be whether you are a lady who likes to lunch in style with friends, a couple of colleagues enjoying a snack after work or a night owl who wants to refuel before hitting the clubs. It might be the SmallWorld, but this café delivers some big flavours. Impressed? You bet we are. SmallWorld Café CC Le Village Ctra. KIM’S ANIMAL RESCUE FOR ST RAY DOGS AND CAT S OF SPAIN Kim’s Animal Rescue wishes to minimize the number of stray animals in southern Spain; this is achieved through creating awareness, plus overseeing neutering programmes and re-homing.

Furry Friends

ES! IZ R P IN W S T PE Is your pooch the next Pudsey? Do you have a fearsome feline or a bonkers bunny? Well, what we need you to do is to take a snap of your prized pet and enter it into Kim’s International pet photo competition. Your favourite pet photo may not only win you a prize and get your photo published in a luxury magazine, but you will also be helping to raise money for animals who need help urgently. Kim’s Animal Rescue Centre in Fuengirola is running an International pet photo competition. You can enter by sharing a photo of your pet which should be uploaded to the dedicated Facebook

page with your pet’s name and then posting 2.50€ (or equivalent) via the FundRazr button on the same page. The winning photograph will be published in the October issue of Society Marbella Magazine and will receive a 50€ voucher for El Corte Inglés or £50 Love2Shop voucher. Closing date for entries is Friday 30th August 2013. www.facebook.com/ KimsAnimalRescuePrizePetPhotoCompetition

Kim has worked with stray animals since 1997. Her work started out as an intensive programme to spay feral cats and evolved to the level of an organisation with charitable status. A rescue was built with the capacity to house 50 dogs for rehabilitation and re-homing. Since then the charity has grown extensively and branched out to become two different rescue organisations. Today thousands of animals have found new loving homes all over Europe and Kim’s Animal Rescue plans to help even more. This is a family run rescue centre, receiving no government help. The only money obtained is generally raised via gifts of animal food and donations.

URGENT APPEAL: With people going on holidays and deciding to dump their pets rather than pay for a kennels, Kim’s currently has nearly 300 animals at the centre. They are desperately in need of donations, food, building materials, water (their well has run dry), bedding and volunteers to walk the dogs. PL EA SE TA KE ME HO ME ! DINKY Dinky is a very playful 6 years old terrier mix, with the energy of a puppy. She is very comfortable with all animals and people. Dinky was handed to the shelter by a family who had a new baby as they decided they no longer had time for her. She couldn’t understand what she had done wrong. Dinky always looks as though she is smiling, is very loyal and would make a wonderful companion. Her favourite thing is to play throw and catch, she would play all day if she could. She has a lot of love to give.

CASPIAS Caspias is a beautiful 16 weeks old Siamese kitten. He was rescued with his two brothers from the killing station 3 weeks ago and he is a very sweet playful boy. A member of the Society Marbella team has fallen in love with him, but cannot adopt him as her and her partner have just adopted a cat with feline aids. Could you let this adorable little boy be part of your life?

SHY Shy is a very loving 7 month old pup. His Mum was a Jack Russell but as you can see Shy is a little bigger. He has a relaxed temperament and will grow into a medium sized dog. Shy has been in foster care and is therefore house trained. He is great with children and other animals, (he has been living with two boys under 5 who adore him and 6 other dogs, so we can promise that he gets on with everyone.) He is a great all-rounder. This boy deserves he’s forever home as he has sat and watched all his brothers and sisters and even his mother get adopted. If Shy is for you and you decide to adopt him, you must also take on his toy duck who he will not be separated from.

SASKIA Did you know that black cats were worshiped in ancient Egypt, and owning black cats was thought to bring good luck. We think this particular black cat is definitely channelling the ancient Egyptian Goddess Bast. Saskia is only one years old and has been spayed. She was rescued from the bins on a resort and has a very loving and laid back personality. She enjoys playtime and would love to bring some good luck to your home.

“HIGH TEA” WITH JOSEPH KLIBANSKY On 18th July new media artist Joseph Klibansky visited The Red Penguin Art Gallery in El Cort Ingles Marbella to personally introduce his latest masterpieces, fresh from their launch at the famous ART BASEL/MIAMI. During this time he did a Meet & Greet with invited guests and answered questions about his style and inspirations.

Klibanksy is one of the Red Penguin Art Gallery’s featured artist and his latest pieces are part of the current exhibition “The Beautiful & the Best”. This exhibition is running until 6th August with stunning artworks from MARC LAGRANGE, Isabell Beyel, Karel Appel, Corneille, Lita Cabellut, Walasse Ting and Cats&Withoos. From 8th August Red Penguin’s Summer Festival will begin with several exhibitions, workshops, mobile exhibitions and art projects.

Klibansky’s main inspirations are architecture and the city, particularly the accelerated, compressed and densely populated urban environments of the 21st Century that he smoothly alters into a futurist landscape of the imagination.

There are lots of ways to get involved with the project for their third year including becoming a volunteer, becoming a supporter of the charity through a monthly donation, or giving the gift of a tree. There is also the opportunity to learn all about the principles of permaculture, which Arboretum uses in their sites and activities,

on the 2013 Permaculture Design Course, an internationally recognised qualification. This is an intensive 10 day course which is running from 18th to 27th October this year and has only 30 places available.

The Red Penguin Gallery is open to the public from 10.00-21.00 Monday to Saturday and is free to visit redpenguinartgallery.com

JOIN THE JET SET

Nomad Jets has launched a unique Jetlev Flight Centre in Marbella. Exclusive to Marbella and a brand new concept in Spain, Jetlev is a super-cool, James Bond style jet-pack flying machine, which will be available to the general public throughout the summer season. This technologically advanced jet pack is a much more exhilarating experience than skydiving and bungee jumping, fuelled by a 220 horsepower, 700 pound force engine pumping 4,000 litres of water per minute - the ultimate in highoctane enjoyment. The certified Jetlev flight centre, located at the Marbella Playa Hotel, will be open only for a few months throughout the summer season, before packing up and relocating to the next millionaires’ playground. Special packages include lunch at Nikki Beach and a ride on a Jetlev. Children can also be

accommodated by flying in tandem with an instructor. Already a hit in the US, Jetlev flights last for around 30 exhilarating minutes. The company is keen that everyone has a great time, which means paying attention to safety. The take-off area has been carefully selected, the fully trained instructors provide full safety briefings before each flight and the Jetlev can be controlled remotely if anyone looks like they may lose control. It’s a matter of booking as soon as possible, as there will only be 12 flights per day and the flight centre will close in mid-September, so hen, stag and birthday party organisers need to get moving or miss out. The price for a 30 minute ride is 199€. nomadjets.com

We can say, ‘from Marbella to space’, as they can have breakfast in Marbella, eat in space and return to Marbella to sleep.” According to José Mariano of zero2infinity, “The trip takes about six hours in total; three to get up, two in space and one down.” He

compares the activity to a Ferris wheel and rollercoasters, stating that, “Our customers don’t take our rides to show how capable they are, they just want to have a good experience and, with the support of agencies such as CRIS&KIM Travel Designers, it will be possible”. crisandkim.com

In the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Cusco Peru, in the District of Coya, there is a place where the poorest people of Southern Peru receive quality health care 7 days a week. The Kausay Wasi Clinic provides health services since 2005 and to date has served more than 124,000 patients, mostly in extreme poverty.
