PUBLISHER’S LETTER

As the world bemoans rising commodity prices and labour shortages, our sunny little city continues to buck the doom and gloom trend with almost all sectors reporting record trading conditions for October, hurrah! Busy bars, hotels, and cinnamon roll sellers; evidence that it can only be a matter of time before Marbella is home to more swedes than… Sweden! And… (trepidatious drum roll), the Brits are back! Where ya been folks? Also, is it just me or has everyone else normally had their fires on by the end of October! Firewood sellers coast-wide are looking skywards for faint hopes of darker days but seemingly summer 2021 is set to stay until 2022! Ok by me. Elsewhere, in this November issue, we are delighted to feature cover girl Anja Taylor-Joy the English-Argentinean actress who is singlehandedly responsible for making chess cool! The Queen’s Gambit star only spoke Spanish until the age of six before she moved to London, to find out more about her rise to stardom turn to page 18.

With the summer celebrations slowing down, it is time to enjoy a little relaxing prior to the festivities commencing. Why not start a new book or engross yourself in a series? Turn to page 20 for our reading recommendations of the month or find upcoming shows to binge on page 24. Our top pick? Ozark: Season 4 featuring Jason Bateman, Laura Linney and Julia Garner follows the final journey of the Byrde family with more drama and most likely, disasters than ever. Not seen seasons 1-3? Even better, that’s your November sorted!

Queen Anya

S

he was propelled to superstardom as Beth Harmon in last year’s Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit, but Anya-Josephine Marie Taylor-Joy has been acting since youth. Born in Miami and the youngest of six children, Anya lived between Argentina and England. Her father was a banker and a powerboat racer and her mother a psychologist. When she was fourteen, she used her savings to move to New York, “I ran away…,” Taylor-Joy said. “I was having a really bad time at school, and I wanted to be an actor. So, I enrolled in a director’s program, and I got in. I came down to go to school one day and I said to my parents, ‘Look, I’m not going to school. I’ve saved up enough money to buy myself a plane ticket to New York. I’m going to do this, and you can either be a part of it with me or I’m just going to go do it by myself.’ My parents were amazing, and they supported me in it.” At 16 she left school to pursue acting full-time and by seventeen, she was scouted by Storm Model Management founder Sarah Doukas, while walking outside Harrods department store in London. In 2014, she made her acting debut with an episode of ‘Endeavour’. The following year, she won critical acclaim for her breakout role as the young Puritan girl, Thomasin in the period horror flick ‘The Witch’. That same year, Taylor-Joy also played Cassandra in the British fantasy-adventure TV program ‘Atlantis’.

18

In 2016 she starred in the sci-fi horror ‘Morgan’, the thriller ‘Split’ as Casey Cooke and in Vikram Gandhi’s ‘Barry’. The film focused on a young Barack Obama and his life at Columbia University. Taylor-Joy played one of Obama’s friends and featured alongside other artists including Devon Terrell, Jason Mitchell, Jenna Elfman, Ashley Judd, Ellar Coltrane and Avi Nash. In 2017, Anya appeared in the television miniseries ‘The Miniaturist’ as Petronella Brandt. That year, she also got to play roles in the Spanish psychological horror flick ‘Marrowbone’ as well as in Cory Finley’s directional debut ‘Thoroughbreds’. In 2019, the talented actress reprised her role as Casey in the movie ‘Glass’.

In 2020 Anya played the lead character of Emma Woodhouse in the comedydrama film, Emma, which was the adaptation of Jane Austin’s novel of the same name. She then went on to play the fictional character of ‘Magik; in the superhero horror movie ‘The New Mutants’, the final instalment in the X-Men film series. 2020 was also the year Anya became Beth Harmon in the Netflix miniseries that catapulted her to another level of fame. The series, and Anya’s performance, was critically acclaimed. Anya plays a young chess prodigy with a sheltered past who struggles with an addiction problem. While dealing with her addictions and navigating a new world, outside of the orphanage she grew up in, Harmon finds her purpose in chess. She aims to beat the grandmasters while disputing everyone’s preconceived notion that only men can be masters at chess. Taylor-Joy connected with the character

on a deeper level, as a person searching to find a place where she fits in. Talking of the role she shared, ‘It’s not about chess. It’s about loneliness and trying to find your place and the price of genius, and what it is to be that other and attempting to find your world within that.’ And yeah, I was desperate to tell this story. I fell in love with her immediately, and I really thought that I could do it right.” she added. Quickly making a name for herself as one of the standout actresses of her generation, Anya raked in all the big honours for her performance as the

chess champion, including a Golden Globes award, SAG Award, and Critics’ Choice award. Darren Franich of Entertainment Weekly called her performance “darkly fascinating” and noted how she “excels in the quiet moments, [with] her eyelids narrowing as she decimates an opponent, [and] her whole body physicalizing angry desperation when the game turns against her.” Similarly, Caroline Framke of Variety found her to be “so magnetic that when she stares down the camera lens, her flinty glare threatens to cut right through it.” In 2021, Time Magazine placed her on the Time 100 Next list and the same year she appeared in the drama film, Here Are the Young Men, directed by Eoin Macken and based on the novel of the same name by Rob Doyle. This month Joy’s film, Last Night in Soho, Edgar Wright’s psychological horror, is released across Spain. Looking ahead, Scott Frank the writer-director of The Queen’s Gambit, announced that he hoped to film an adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Laughter in the Dark starring Taylor-Joy. She will then team up once again with filmmaker Robert Eggers for a starring role in the historical revenge film The Northman, which has been described as “a Viking revenge saga set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century.” In October 2020, it was revealed that Anya had been cast in the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa. In January 2021, her role in David O’ Russel’s period drama was publicised, which will also star Robert De Niro, Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and Mike Myers. In September 2021, the young talent was announced as the voice of Princess Peach in Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic’s Super Mario Bros set to be released on December 21, 2022. A force to be reckoned with in the acting world, Anya’s is making a name for herself and isn’t going anywhere.

WISH YOU WERE HERE by Jodi Picoult

Diana O’Toole has her entire life planned out and with the big 30 approaching, she is right on target to get engaged to her perfect boyfriend, surgical resident, Finn. Next on the list is ‘done having kids by 35’, and then move out to the New York suburbs, all while climbing the career ladder in the art auction world. However, when a virus breaks out in their city, Finn encourages Diana to go on the non-refundable holiday to the Galapagos Islands they had booked, without him. Diana then finds herself quarantined on the island during the pandemic and starts to examine everything in her life, her choices, and what is really important.

US WHAT WE CARRY 2 CALL by Amanda Gorman This year, Amanda Gorman became the youngest presidential inaugural poet in US history when she read her poem, ‘The Hill We Climb,’ at President Biden’s inauguration. Harnessing the collective grief of the global pandemic, Amanda Gorman captures a difficult moment in time and transforms it into a lyric of hope and healing. A motivating and extraordinary voice in American poetry, this collection is bursting with musical language exploring themes of identity, sorrow and memory.

COMINGS 3 FOURTH by Megan McCafferty At first, it seems that she’s living the elusive New York City dream. She’s subletting an apartment with her best friend, Hope, working for a magazine whilst actually using her psychology degree, and still deeply in love with Marcus Flutie, her charming high-school sweetheart. But of course, things are always more complicated than they seem. And when Marcus asks her to marry him Jessica begins to look at her life choices and what lies ahead.

LISTEN 1 ADELE – 30

It has been 6 years since Adele released her album ‘25’ making her one of the most successful artists of all time., “I’ve learned a lot of blistering home truths about myself along the way. I’ve shed many layers but also wrapped myself in new ones. Discovered genuinely useful and wholesome mentalities to lead with, and I feel like I’ve finally found my feelings again. I’d go so far as to say I’ve never felt more peaceful in my life. And so, I’m ready to finally put this album out,” she shared ahead of the release. Once again, she’s linked up with producer Greg Kurstin, who co-wrote three tracks on her previous album ‘25’, including its epic lead single ‘Hello’. Swedish producers Max Martin and Shellback, who co-produced and co-wrote her track ‘Send My Love (To Your New Lover)’, are also credited on the record along with singer-songwriter Tobias Jesso Jr. For the first time, Adele has also worked with the British producer Inflo who is a member of the mysterious, Mercury-nominated SAULT collective.

Nicole Moerland - Founder of Marbella Film School

Nicole is of Dutch and Indonesian descent, born in Holland and raised in Andalucia, Spain, and attended the Aloha College. In 2004, she attended the prestigious Stella Adler Academy of Acting in Los Angeles and graduated in 2007. She has worked and lived in Holland, Spain, the UK and USA, gaining invaluable experience working with some of the world’s most talented actors and directors, including Rutger Hauer at The Film Factory, as well as director, Peter Yates. She founded the Perth Film School (Australia) & Marbella Film School (Spain). She speaks fluent Dutch, Spanish, English and is learning Bahasa Indonesian.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO... M

arbella is not only a famous holiday destination, but it is also home to the ever-growing film industry. Naturally, there are many hidden and not-so-hidden talents living on the coast. This month, we had a chat with awardwinning Spanish actress and film producer, Estefania Villaespesa. Estefania recently took home the Best Actress award at the Marbella International Film Festival for her role in the movie ‘Dark Light’ (written and directed by Damian Chapa). She has previously trained in stage, film, voice, and television at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts in London and was also a student of Marbella Film School. As the co-founder of Marbella Film Academy, Estefania plays a pivotal role in making waves in the film industry and creating opportunities locally.

Olivia Bella Administrator & Social Media Manager of Marbella Film School Olivia is originally from Hungary, however, she has been living and working internationally for many years, collecting valuable life experience. She studied acting in London and also at the Marbella Film School. She is currently taking care of the school’s behindthe-scenes administrative and creative tasks. Olivia is also a passionate photographer and writer. Her poems have been published in numerous anthologies. She is currently looking for a publisher for her solo poetry book.

l Congratulations on winning an award for Best Actress. How was the filming experience? I had a great time during the production. It was a big challenge to play the role of a woman with a mental disorder. She had eight personalities and spoke in several languages, but at the same time, that was also the most exciting part.

l How did being a student at Marbella Film School contribute to your success? www.marbellafilmschool.com @marbella_film_school www.facebook.com/ marbellafilmschool

Estefania with her award for Best Actress

Actors are required to constantly improve their skillset. A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to join Marbella Film School and take part in several training courses to further hone my skills when it comes to self-tape auditions and authentic on-screen

Estefania and Nicole at MIFF 2021

Furthermore, the South of Spain has such stunningly beautiful locations and breathtaking landscapes. It has established film studios, with all the necessary equipment, crew and acting talent ready to go. Andalusia is a dream come true for any movie production company.

l Can you tell us about your next projects? performance. Joining the classes has certainly boosted my confidence as an actress.

l Tell us about the Marbella Film Academy? My sister, Mariadel Villaespesa, who is a movie director based in Los Angeles, and I, created the Marbella Film Academy, a cultural organization to promote the local film industry and to establish Marbella as the Hollywood of Europe. The Academy has been part of several international film productions, training programs, and events.

l What is your vision for the film industry in Marbella? I believe that filmmaking is about painting with light. Andalusia or “The Land of Light” as it was called by the Moors, has the most perfect lighting for movie production. Not only that, but on average, we have three hundred and twenty days of such light every year, virtually the same as in Hollywood!

I am currently preparing for my next role in a UK production, “Double Bluff”, an action film to be shot in early 2022 in Marbella. Additionally, the Marbella Film Academy is involved in a coproduction of a thriller with Cheblis Films, a production company from Paraguay. We are also in the process of organizing the Marbella Film Market in collaboration with “Money for Movie”, a company that is changing the way investment is made in the film industry, and “Evolutionary Films”, a British film and television production company and leading international sales agency. The event will be marked as an important date in the movie calendar of major industry players who will make a stop in Marbella next year between the Toronto International Film Festival and the American Film Market.

KOURTNEY LOVES AGAIN The whole world felt the love between Kardashian eldest sister, Kourtney and Travis Barker when he proposed last month at a beach in Montecito, California. The Blink-182 drummer used an elaborate arrangement of red flowers and candles on the sand to ask Kourtney to be his ‘forever’. The couple started dating at the beginning of 2021, having been friends for years. This will be Kourtney’s first time down the aisle after dating Scott Disick on and off, followed by Younes Bendjima. We are so happy to see Kourtey finally found her happy ever after!

VEGAN FOR MARY ELLEN

BERRY

Dame Mary was honoured last month by the Prince of Wales during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle sharing she is “proud and honoured” to be made a Dame Commander for services to cooking, writing, and baking. As well as her 50-year culinary and broadcasting career, the honour also recognises her charity work. Talking of the recognition she shared, I’m very thrilled—and isn’t it beautiful!” she said. “Absolutely lovely. I think when I go home, I shall pin it and look at it.” She added, “I can’t tell you how exciting it was. I kept thinking, I wish I could get home and ring my parents, but they’re up there,” she said, indicating the sky, “and they know.”

Ellen DeGeneres is launching her first-ever vegan skincare line meant for aging skin. The brand is called Kind Science to go along with DeGeneres’ life motto of being kind to everyone and everything. “Kind Science isn’t about anti-aging because aging is a good thing… I want to keep laughing, just with fewer laugh lines and wrinkles,” she said on Instagram. Ellen also revealed that “I’ve been working on it for the past three years. I’ve been using it for three years. My friends, my family, we have sent it out to other people to test it out — they didn’t know it was mine. Everyone’s loving it,” DeGeneres explained. “You’re going to love it. The results are through the roof and I can’t wait for you to try it.” The big jump to beauty comes months after she announced that her show will be coming to an end amid toxic workplace allegations.

PIERS CUTS TIES Piers Morgan has officially cut ties with ITV announcing he is quitting his ITV show, Piers Morgan’s Life Stories and broadcast he will be replaced by his former Good Morning Britain co-star, Kate Garraway. Earlier in the year, Morgan left his spot on Good Morning Britain due to a row over comments he made about the Duchess of Sussex. B

orn and raised in the picturesque town of Salamanca, some two hours west of Madrid, the 37 year old talks us through his various roles within the company and a little about himself.

Where and what did you study?

Where do you unwind or holiday?

I studied journalism and public relations in Madrid.

Any time I am surrounded by nature I truly relax and de-stress. Nature is so amazing... give me a forest over a beach any day!

Do you speak any other languages? Yes I’m fluent in English and am looking for another language to learn.

What were your boyhood dreams? Well, as with most young males, I often dreamed of being a professional sportsman and representing my country. Honesty, I wanted to be so many things!

What are your favourite sports?

Why did you end up choosing hospitality as a career? I am social person, always loved being around people... I also have a passion for good food and music so it seemed a natural progression.

What do you love most about owning your own company?

I like to think of myself as very sporty and I do like to keep in shape. Although I enjoy football, golf and tennis, if I had to choose, I would have to say that golf is my favourite pastime.

Well, there are many benefits but I like that I “own” my own decisions, both good and bad. It improves my thought process knowing any decisions I make can be both profitable or detrimental to the group, it sharpens my focus.

Owning so many different hospitality venues you must have access to many different styles of food which is your favourite cuisine?

Do you have a favourite venue within your group?

That’s an easy one for me! Pasta... always pasta.

Talk us through your day to day... I am in touch daily with all departments with a personal focus on party bookings and the overall PR function. Each day offers up new challenges which in turn keeps everything fresh and unique.

I love that they all have their own unique personality but if I had to pick then I guess Mosh as our first project would have to be closest to my heart.

Finally, what are your long term aspirations for the brand? To become an established worldwide brand with diverse venues in international cities. Yes, that would be awesome! @ roberto_santamaria7

Last week I sat in an hour long petrol station queue (Nothing to do with Brexit. Nothing, ok? NOTHING. Got it?.... Nooooothing to do with Brexit.....) only to gratefully pay £1.42 for a litre of diesel (NO-THING...) which would enable me to sit in plenty more traffic the next day on a job in West London.... and the day after. Something struck me: Life’s too short!

Neurologists characterise two sorts of attention: Bottom-up and Top-down. Bottom-up attention is reflexive – it’s applied unconsciously to external factors in our environment: A loud bang or flash of light. The roar of a hungry predator. Bottomup attention is a survival prerequisite.

Statistics suggest social media distraction costs the US economy $650 billion annually.

Yes, 80 odd years is a fair chunk of time, but when you consider at least Top-down attention meanwhile is a quarter of that is spent in bed, more goals-orientated. We around a fifth at work, consciously 3% listening to your choose The problem father in law comparing to apply is since we’ve the various A roads of it to a task. Britain, 2% in the bog eg. Everyone impressive, but not unlimited resources still had to go to the bog but of our brains towards the constant cycle it was their own bog right of tasks at hand. With some semblance of “normality” resumed though, it’s back to the hustle No wonder we’ve become a distracted and grind of modern life, multi tasking species. As neuroscience has shown, we myths and modern conceptions of simply can’t effectively parallel process success telling us we’re winning our top-down attention. You might if we’re juggling long hours of be able to stroke the cat whilst work with daily school runs, watching The Crown but early morning dog walks, try to write a finance report late night emails, food whilst replying to constant shopping, floor mopping, Whatsapps and your overall binge-watching, gym-dodging, productivity and focus will plummet. feed-scrolling exhaustion. Attempt to hold a phone conversation with a family member whilst writing Multi-tasking doesn’t really work though, 900 words on distraction and you’ll that’s been scientifically proven. Not in accidentally call your mum Boris (It any meaningful sense anyway. could have been worse).

The problem is since we’ve created a world “on demand”, be that music, video, news or social media, our own tolerance for boredom (or simply “being”) seems to have all but disappeared. We repeatedly search for the tiny dopamine hit we get from discovering that next interesting fact, funny clip, shareable photo or bias confirmation. Experts call it “information foraging”. Like a squirrel hunting for nuts in a tree, we seek out satisfaction in one corner of the web, subconsciously calculating whether the potential reward squares up against the investment of searching. If we’re not getting what we think we need from one tree, we’ll usually jump to another. The tech industry knows this, their algorithmenhanced apps designed to grab our attention as best they can. The ping of a new notification has to be the most common distraction we live with today, a bottom-up pull on the top down attention we’re seeing erode and fragment as the reward cycle in our brains becomes shorter and shorter. We used to have to drive to Blockbusters and hunt for something we wanted to watch. Now Netflix auto-plays the next episode before the credits have finished rolling on the one we just drooled our way through. Apps are designed with features mimicking gambling highs and lows, the very colours, layouts and fonts crafted for maximum addictiveness. And we’re addicted. Statistics suggest social media distraction costs the US economy $650 billion annually. We reach for our phones at red lights, in shop queues and waiting rooms, unable or unwilling to spend 60 seconds where we actually are. Whether it’s the need to be entertained or anxiety about timepoverty convincing us that firing off a quick work email whilst waiting for coffee is winning. The science proves chatting to the barista or the customer next to us would in fact have a far more positive effect on our overall wellbeing. So stow your phone (in the next room if you have to) and mindfully smell the roses. You can always send that email later.... ….whilst calling your mum.

YOUR JOURNEY - YOUR WELLBEING - TLE CBD THERAPIES

The Entourage Effect Working within The Planet

This past year we have all had to adopt to many changes in our lives. Some have flourished where others have suffered immensely and have totally withdrawn from society. Now is the time to reach out to others, to socialise a little more and to show people that you care. The fear that once filled the world is clearing and we can start using the tools we have inside us to achieve better health and help heal each other.

Working with Well-being When clients approach me for help, I always try to look at not only at their symptoms but their lifestyle choices as a whole. This includes social activities, diet, exercise routine and medication which all have an effect on our general wellbeing. This is an ‘entourage of effects’. If we look at the body and our system as a complete working machine it may help us to understand what parts are the cause of the problem. Normally when you start suffering from symptoms it is due to variety of factors. For example, many people suffering from sleep problems have extremely busy lives and struggle to switch off their minds at night. Yes, taking CBD can help with sleep, but incorporating that with a warm beverage, some soft tranquil music and a CBD foot massage, will more or less guarantee entrance to the land of nod. I believe that we can help ourselves to better health but it does take practice. We have to make little changes in our life to help our symptoms and improve our personal welfare needs.

The Entourage Effect Defined in Cannabis The entourage effect in cannabis refers to the different compounds in the products. I choose to use only FULL SPECTRUM oils because they have retained all the compounds of the plant including the legal requirement of 0.2% THC, as well as the terpenes minerals and flavonoids. To help you understand what the difference means when it comes to product choice, I have compiled an easy to understand breakdown below. It is best for your health to use an oil which contains as many compounds of the plant as possible. The more natural the better! • Full-spectrum CBD oil, which contains a full range of naturallyoccurring compounds from the cannabis plant, including cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids • Broad-spectrum CBD oil, which contains the full range of cannabis compounds minus psychoactive THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) • CBD isolate oil, which contains only CBD and no other compounds

It’s the wonderful month of November and as I walk along the promenade in Marbella I feel a tingling sensation across my face, as the fresh crisp air blows through my hair and over my skin. I take deep breaths and say thank you for the beautiful weather we have here in Marbella. The Autumns are so mild, we are truly blessed to be able to still embrace the warmth of sun on us this time of year and the benefit from the Vitamin D penetrating to our bones. 38

Medical cannabis and the future, as I see it, will be using isolated compounds from the plants to adhere to medical license restrictions. I find it extremely interesting that Canada use only full spectrum products whilst many other countries have chosen to isolate instead of keep the plant in its whole variety.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

The ’entourage effect’ is defined as the synergistic relationship between CBD and the other naturally occurring compound. It means that all cannabinoids and terpenes found in the cannabis plant work together for optimal benefits and that CBD isolated by itself will be less effective than when used in combination with other cannabinoids. One quote that I have chosen to use has been taken from a clinical paper by Dr Ethan Russo,

“This type of synergism may play a role in the widely held, (but not experimentally based,) view that in some cases plants are better drugs than the natural products isolated from them”. This is something that I whole heartedly believe in. I feel that we need to understand the true benefits of combining different treatments and natural therapies to help ourselves feel and look better from the inside out.

THE TLE ENTOURAGE EFFECT: Changing your bodies energetic frequency can have profound health benefits. I love working with energy, why wouldn’t I? It is in everything. Even down to the products we consume, they all have some sort of energetic charge. If I want to improve my mood or clear my head, my first response is not to take a tablet but is to take a walk. Spending time outdoors and around nature really helps to benefit health in general. Sometimes it can take a little while to adjust if you are used to living in the city, but with practice, you will start to feel more calm in natural surroundings. If you have children getting a break is sometimes not easy, but after you start to include them on these nature activities you will see them flourish and grow too, in both body, mind and spirit. In my opinion, it so important to start to understand how we fit in to the world and the larger scale of things. To help bring balance and start making a positive impact can help us not only restore our health, but can help renew the planet. By enhancing our welfare with natural remedies it also helps the planet. Use the benefits of your knowledge of ‘the entourage effect’ by choosing little lifestyle changes that can help you feel better by bringing you into balance naturally. Energy Healing using the ancient techniques of chakras I combine the use of real cannabis leaves, crystals, aroma therapy oils and sound to help stimulate the mind and body’s senses. This natural treatment has been used throughout the ages to help alignment and stimulate spiritual growth. Clients are left feeling focused and

energised, some believe it feels like magic, an entourage of effects and benefits. Massage is a therapy which has been used for centuries to improve stress and relieve inflammation. CBD massage improves those sensations further as it stimulates the many receptors in the skin. I was shown an amazing technique by a Persian lady where you put pressure on the forearms. You could actually feel the inflammation in the body of my son. After 10 minutes of massage and repeating this on the back area it induced him into sleep. In the morning his temperature had improved and within 24 hours he was back playing in the garden. Nutrition is vitally important to improve your welfare. Choosing a better diet is only going to have positive benefits. CBD products, of course, are my favourite choice and by combining or selecting a number of consumable TLE products, one can restore balance and receive the optimum entourage effect. Yoga practice, especially if done on a regular basis, can improve strength and flexibility as well as have profound effects on mind and body in a positive way. Choosing exercises that suit your needs is really the most important thing. You need to enjoy participating in the activity, as doing things that make us unhappy can have a negative effect on our health. With this new found knowledge on the ‘entourage effect,’ you can maximize your TLE CBD benefits, with products and services that include all of your favourite compounds along with other external factors to help on your wellness journey.

You might have heard of the latest workout craze from social media - the 600kcal burning workout in 60 minutes. It’s clocked up millions of views, along with thousands of fans and imitators, but… is 600kcal in 60 minutes that special? And… should you be doing it or are there better ways to achieve the same result?

Let’s look at the calorie burn claim first of all, it sounds impressive but it’s worth noting that your calorie burn will depend on a number of factors including the intensity you exercise at, your overall weight and your muscle mass. Put simply, the higher your muscle mass and the higher your body weight, the more calories you burn. Bear in mind that an hour of jogging will burn around 550-600 calories for a 72kg person, but around 700 to 750 for a 90kg person. If we move at greater intensity, a typical High Intensity Interval Workout (HIIT) can burn close to 800 calories an hour - though we wouldn’t recommend an hour of HIIT as it will put a big strain on the central nervous system and potentially increase the stress hormone cortisol. When we exercise our body utilises glucose, glycogen and body fat (in that order) for energy. When we exercise at intensity and/ or for long periods of time, our energy requirements increase, and the greater the intensity of the movement, the greater the energy requirement.

Like a car, accelerate hard, and you use more petrol, it’s a similar process with the body. 40

Here’s the thing though, if you’re really going at full intensity (for your level of fitness) then 20 to 30 minutes is enough, after that, you shouldn’t have much left in the tank. The 600kcal in 60 minutes classes are popular with the younger generation for a reason. 60 minutes of HIIT is a very long time and will raise levels of the stress hormone cortisol (raised levels are linked with fat gain). There’s also an injury risk and to get the most from such a duration of class you’d need to be quite fit to start with. We wouldn’t recommend it to people who are overweight, unfit, or middle age or older as there are other ways to achieve the same goal of calorie burn, that aren’t as hard on the body and central nervous system. If you’re carrying an injury or have a physical ailment we also wouldn’t recommend it.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

HIIT is great for our heart and lungs but will put big demands on the cardiovascular system - if done at intensity (which it should be to get results). It will also put pressure on joints and wouldn’t be suitable for people already carrying injuries due to the full body dynamic nature of the moves. If your goal is managing your body composition (dropping body fat) then these workouts could be part of an overall approach that also combines short bursts of HIIT with resistance training to build muscle mass (which declines as we age) and a considered approach to nutrition.

The class is definitely not some sort of magic bullet and doing more than a couple of these classes a week on a consistent basis is likely to be counter productive as cortisol will remain elevated. Workouts this long and intense are actually working against our hormones once we’re into and beyond middle age. Both men and women have less testosterone and human growth hormone, and women have less oestrogen and progesterone.

With these hormones in decline, we want to work in line with them, so the science based approach we take is to train in short intense bursts to temporarily boost sex hormone levels while keeping the stress hormone cortisol low. Research shows that long workouts like this can depress base levels of these hormones and spike our cortisol, so we actually end up working against our body.

We also need to ensure we allow for adequate recovery as we age. It’s better to aim for 3 to 4 shorter HIIT sessions a week, ideally first thing in the morning - fasted - to boost the fat burning results. Our clients find this a simple and achievable way to reduce their body fat, boost their fitness and them maintain their results. Short workouts can easily fit into your busy day, won’t over stress your body and will definitely get you results. Finally, don’t neglect your nutrition, the energy in part of the equation (there’s no point burning 600 calories if you then eat 800 more!). For an hour of intense exercise like this you want to make sure you’re well hydrated before hand, and you want to be fuelled. Fasted HIIT should only be done for up to 30 minutes as after that you’ll go into a catabolic state burning muscle for energy - which is not what you want! Contrary to popular belief certain foods or supplements won’t make you burn more calories while training. With high intensity training it’s the so called after burner effect that is doing the work. By working so hard you struggle for breath, there’s insufficient oxygen to adequately fuel the muscles so we create an oxygen debt. The body will then recalibrate by raising the metabolic rate for 24 plus hours post exercise. Remember too that muscle is metabolically active, so the more muscle we have, the more calories we burn. This is why we want to combine resistance training with short HIIT sessions not only for aesthetic reasons, but for an all around health boost to improve our quality of life.

Smiles Ahead Exclusive Interview with

Soheil S Mark DDS MSc Dental surgeon Soheil S Mark, or Simon as his patients call him, is a private practitioner in Marbella, working at Aaura Dental and Mark Dental Clinic, together with his brother Sam.

Tell us about your educational background I began my studies at Gothenburg University, where I spent five years studying dental surgery. Since then, I’ve completed various postgraduate programs in Europe and the US. My most recent training was at Manchester University and Hospital, where I obtained a Master of Science degree - my thesis subject was on dental implant solutions for patients with limited bone volumes. Postgraduate training and education is a part of my professional life. Whether it is to gain or share knowledge, both are equally stimulating for me.

How did your professional life start here in Spain? Straight out of grad school 13 years ago, I embarked on my journey working a few days a week in small clinics in the villages of Velez Malaga and Mijas Pueblo. I was grateful for the opportunity, and they were happy to have me dealing with the foreign patient community. At that time, my dad had a place in Fuengirola, which he thought would make a great clinic for me and my brother. The premises were still bricks and sand, and we reformed it ourselves and turned it into a clinic. I

take a lot of pride in that today, and I’m forever grateful to my parents for that opportunity. Being a private practitioner from day one gave me an important foundation for my career. Dealing with all aspects of dentistry, and with patients day in and day out, made me a better dentist and above all, a better physician.

How do you think your patients see you? I always act in the best interest of my patients. I think that is mirrored in the confidence my patients have in me. I am honest, fair, and committed to the work I do and to my patients. We don’t often get feedback as practitioners, as patients rightfully take for granted that we have to do our job correctly. But, patients tend to tell me that I am very gentle and skillful, which is probably a virtue, being a dental surgeon. I feel incredibly honoured and privileged to be able to do what I love for my patients. And their satisfaction is my pleasure.

What do you do and what do you treat? I handle both simple implant dentistry and fairly complex surgical cases and rehabilitations. People can lose teeth for a variety of reasons and the only option is to install new ones. Dentistry is, for patients, a mix of emotional stress and financial sacrifice, and they want the best possible aesthetic outcome in the shortest time possible. I have to handle all these aspects simultaneously for my patients. I can give you an implant and new tooth in one day; I can remove bad teeth, install full mouth implants, and deliver a temporary bridge the same day; I can convert grandma’s loose denture into a what I love: I dedicate part of my time snap-on denture in to general dentistry one session, so she for my patients, and “...I can remove bad teeth, can bite an apple the rest of the time after 20 years. But I can also tell blog at the moment my peers: right direction. you, ‘you don’t need it, you for dentivoice.com, are not there yet’” and in parallel with I developed a that I am working passion for surgery with my brother and a tech team on an and dental implants early in my career, online dental workshop platform. and it fills me with joy to be able to do

I’m also building a personal website that is specially dedicated to dental implants, with detailed information and guidance. There will also be a module where certain treatments that I want to do for research, my blog, or educational reasons will be at a discounted price. Eligible patients get the treatment they need at a lower price, and I get a case for educational purposes and documentation - it’s a win-win situation.

How can customers get in touch? The best thing to do is send me an email with your enquiry and a brief history about yourself: info@markdentalclinic.com

CAPITALS Always wanted to invest in property but haven’t known where to start? With Mojo Capitals, it couldn’t be simpler - not to mention well worth the return.

56

Mojo Capitals is the newest member

of the House of Mojo. It’s the first Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) on the Costa del Sol, and - as with anything the gentlemen do - a fool-proof way to make money in the property market we’re talking a minimum of 60%, tax free.

How?

Per, Jacob, and their newly appointed Head of Capitals in Denmark, Joachim Schiødtz, have come up with a six-year property investment plan aimed at achieving a return of no less than 10% per annum.

To be an investor in Mojo Capitals requires a minimum buy-in of 100,000 euro, and the gentlemen will use this money in the property market, buying the most lucrative properties, reforming, renting and selling them when the time is right, within a five-year period. “Investors become a shareholder of a company that invests in property, which will only be active for a maximum of six years,” explains Per. “We will buy properties outright - no mortgages or loans - and we will sell them within five years. We will then liquidate the

company and holding investors will receive their shares, tax free… It will be the best and fastest way of making money without taking the risks.” “What we’re doing is completely unique. To make money like this in the property market is time-consuming, not to mention uncertain,” says Per. “But what other companies don’t have is the House

A SIX-YEAR PROPERTY INVESTMENT PLAN INTENDED TO ACHIEVE A RETURN OF NO LESS THAN 10% PER ANNUM... 60% TAX-FREE PROFIT of Mojo. We are experienced in buying, managing, reforming, renting and selling properties; we know where to look and who to speak to. We have in-house lawyers and real estate agents - we can manage almost everything ourselves.”

Trust and transparency

Investing in something, no matter how big or small, comes with a level of risk, and putting your trust in someone else to do it can only add to the feeling of doubt. The gentlemen completely understand this, which is why they are always fully transparent with their clients in every aspect of their business - Mojo Capitals will be no different. To keep investors up-to-date with what’s happening in the company, they’ll make videos, reports, and welcome them to on-site meetings so they can see for themselves what’s being done with their money. “We are professional throughand-through and we want to make Mojo Capitals appeal to everyone,” adds Per.

“Being visual and interactive is a brilliant way to communicate with people. It’s all part of having an open and honest relationship - people have to believe in us.”

What’s the catch?

There isn’t one. Well, there’s the small 0.9% fee that Mojo will take for managing the whole process and an earnout; but that’s a very small price to pay for a 60% tax-free profit, not to mention a lot cheaper than general investment services.

He has also started and operated several companies within technology and recruitment, as well as being an investor in Danish, English and Middle Eastern startups.

Where you are is what you see. Your surroundings, immediate and distant, are a key factor in the desirability of your home. But location means more than views alone. It also means accessibility to nature, to sporting and leisure facilities, to entertainment and culture, to essential services and to a beautiful coastline. In other words, the stuff that dreams are made of. Article by Vivion O’Kelly. Images courtesy of BRIGHT.

is clearly visible from the western border of Real de La Quinta. And the recently declared Sierra de las Nieves National Park, covering an area of almost 93,000 hectares, is practically on your doorstep.

You are now in Vista Lago Residences, one of the finest areas to live in the whole of Southern Spain, located within the larger Real de La Quinta 200-hectare country club estate. The spectacular views from here may be the main attraction, but the actual location itself, regardless of views, is also one of the most attractive along the southern coastline. Geographically, you’ll find yourself up to 365 metres above sea level, less than nine kilometres from Puerto Banús, bordered on the western side by the municipality of Marbella and within the municipality of Benahavís. Malaga City and airport is a pleasant drive eastwards, and Gibraltar, although a slightly longer drive south-west, is less than an hour away. The La Concepción Reservoir, just a few minute’s walk from Vista Lago,

Hustle and bustle without stress. People milling about for no purpose other than to be together. Children playing in the streets and squares without being shouted at by worried parents. Sidewalk seats to view and experience life being lived to the full for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and some tapas. This is the typical Southern Spanish town, and there are quite a few of them within easy reach of Vista Lago.

Keep it Real

This is the most mountainous village in the region, at some 500 metres above sea level, and to drive up there in the past used to be an adventure in itself. That has changed, of course, but the village itself has remained more or less the same, thanks to strict conservation laws.

To write about the world-famous Marbella and Puerto Banús would be, perhaps, to preach Catholicism to the Pope. Suffice it to say that getting to either town from Vista Lago will take no more than a few minutes by car. But fewer people might be aware of the numerous other towns and villages within close driving distance of Vista Lago, which include the mountain villages of Istán and Ojén on the east side. Istán, in the foothills of the Sierra Blanca mountains, is a delight to visit, partly because of the beautiful road that winds its way up the east side of the La Concepción reservoir from Nueva Andalucía. The town sits at 300 metres above sea level and is Moorish in origin, as can be seen in its urban layout and its many irrigation channels and drinking fountains, and as one would expect in such a place, it has some truly charming bars and restaurants.

We can see that it was once a Moorish settlement, not only by looking at the ruins of its 11th century castle of Montemayor, but by wandering its twisted narrow streets. It gained fame for its cuisine soon after the Costa del Sol began to attract foreign tourism, and the quality of its first restaurants ensured their survival. The subsequent establishment of many other top restaurants in the town cemented this reputation. In recent years, the area has also come to be known for its numerous golf courses.

Ojén, another quintessentially Moorish village, nestles in the mountains at eight kilometres above Marbella on an excellent road. Visit in the late evening, as the village square turns into a daily carnival of human interaction, with children on their bicycles disturbing the peace just enough to make you aware of how peace and quiet can frequently be overrated. The traditional life of the village was saved from destruction partly through the lack of building land in the mountainous terrain, partly by the abominable condition of the road from Marbella in years gone by and partly by the strict planning laws of recent times. And all this while still a relatively short distance from your new home in Vista Lago, and much the same in any other direction, especially northwards to the spectacular town of Ronda.

Vista Lago Residences, developed by BRIGHT, comprises 18 design-led sustainable villas with exceptional views across the Mediterranean to Gibraltar and Africa beyond. For more information visit https://by-bright.com/ or call the Sales Team directly on (+34) 648 981 111

INSIDE ITALY’S CARRARA

MARBLE MOUNTAINS

Italy’s Carrara marble mountains, estimated at over €1 billion, produce more tons of marble than anywhere else on Earth. This month Dominique Alexandra Forsström takes us on a unique trip, discovering inside the marble quarries and what makes this white gold so special.

What do the buildings of Harvard Medical School, the Oslo Opera House, the Marble Arch in London and Michelangelo’s David have in common? The white gold of Carrara, of course!

C

arrara marble is one of the most prestigious marbles in the world, renowned from the Ancient Roman times to today’s most exclusive interior designers and architects. Because of its millennial history, the Carrara quarries have produced more marble than any other place on earth, and the market as a whole is worth over $1 billion and produces over 6 million tons of marble every year. This Summer, I had the chance to personally visit the outstanding white marble quarries of Carrara, which are so exquisitely picturesque, they were even featured in a James Bond movie, with Daniel Craig driving an Aston Martin DBS up the marble slopes. Driving on the Tuscan coast that connects Genoa to Lucca, it’s easy to mistake the vast bright white mountainsides as glaciers, but when getting closer, you realize what appears as snow are actually enormous openair quarries - the tips of the icebergs, as there are equally enormous underground quarries with caverns the size of cathedrals. As we hop on to a 4x4 Land Rover Defender, the road becomes very steep as we make progress going deeper into the Apuan Alps and further away from the Ligurian Sea, whilst crossing large lorries which are loaded with marble blocks. In the middle of

the bright white marble, huge yellow earthmoving machines seem like tiny toys amongst the monumental quarries. In the distance, the highest quality of white marble used by sculptors such as Michelangelo and found only in the Fantiscritti quarries contrasts with the closer grey marble. Here lies the value behind different types of marble - some marbles are more expensive than others depending on how they are extracted and they are also valued on their veins. Here in Carrara, the 350-ton marble blocks are extracted with chainsaw machines and cables made with diamonds, and then carefully divided into smaller blocks. It’s a very delicate process and it takes about a week to extract one 350-ton block. Another interesting fact is that the colour of the marble depends on the sediments, and in Italy there are the pink marbles of Lucca, the green marbles of the Aosta valley, and the black marbles of La Spezia to name a few. Around Carrara, the marble is white, and the geological structure is such that the marble deposits extend over 58 km and reach 2,000 metres in height, in this ancient group of mountains that was formed 190 million years ago. Discovering both the open-air and interior marble quarries has given

a completely new dimension to appreciating all the work and risks involved in obtaining this natural stone. The combination of immense nature and industrial machinery makes these architectural landscapes almost surreal and completely worth visiting when in Italy!

TOP MARBLE FURNITURE by Dominique Alexandra Forsström Marble furniture is, without question, one of the most sought after finishes to have in a home. It is a strong material that can stand the test of time, a good choice if you’re looking for a long term investment you’ll love for years to come. There are hundreds of different types of marble, with different patterns to consider too. There’s cross cut, which has a more open, flowered appearance, or vein cut, which is cut in a way that results in a more striped look. Heavily veined marble is especially on trend right now, and warmer hued varieties like Gold Calacatta are also having a moment, adding a cozier element to a room. You also have the option between polished and matte finishes. The latter hides dull spots better, but there’s something about a glossy finish that feels particularly luxe. Here are my top marble furniture choices of the moment, adding an element of immediate beauty into any space.

NEW VOLUMES DINING TABLE by ARTEDOMUS Pushing the boundaries of a single natural material, Artedomus teamed up with eight Australian designers to create a 12 piece furniture collection using Elba, a rich, complex stone with 250 million years in the making. I absolutely love the craftsmanship behind each piece, especially this dining table that proudly takes centre stage.

Page Thirty Three Marble Dumbbells

ILARY SIDE TABLE by POLTRONA FRAU I adore this side table designed by Jean-Marie Massaud for Poltrona Frau. Sculpted entirely from Grigio Roma marble with a semi-glossy finish, the monolithic Ilary side table has a circular top and the support is distinctive for its striking handle-groove which makes it easy to move. The two elements are united by an invisible steel frame. This piece would perfectly complement a beautiful lounge area, positioned between two armchairs, or beside a free standing bath tub adorned with candles. A true piece of art!

EPIC COFFEE TABLE by GUBI Named after the epic poems of ancient times, GamFratesi’s Epic Table is a sculptural piece of furniture inspired by Greek columns and Roman architecture. Made in Italy from travertine stone, the Epic Table has a strong, sculptural form comprising of two simple shapes – a hexagon and a circle. I especially appreciate this type of stone for the natural beauty of its veins and the vibrant texture of its unique patina, adding refined elegance to any ambience.

MARBLE MORTAR by TOM DIXON This weighty block of white Morwad marble and brass to smash and grind spices and herbs, is the perfect accessory for creating delicious meals with style. An exaggerated rounded lip allows a firm grip, and I like to leave this mortar out on display in the kitchen as it is a unique piece to use as a decorative accessory.

PEARL LAMP by GINGER & JAGGER The Pearl Wall Lamp is a poetic handcrafted tribute to Nature’s mysterious ways. The piece, made in marble and metal, represents one of its quintessential attributes – serendipity. The magnificence of pearls, when produced naturally by oysters, is as breathtaking and it is exquisitely rare. The Pearl Wall Lamp’s marble shape is carved by hand, making each piece, much like a natural pearl, an absolutely unique sculpture.

The Pool House that Wasn’t We talk to Jason Harris of UDesign about their most recent project – a very splendid guest house that started life as a pool house. Article by Vivion O’Kelly. Images courtesy of UDesign.

76

Home Couture

Home Couture

Sad story.

They built a pool house and hardly anybody used it. That can happen when the sun is shining and the poolside is attractive and everybody is having such fun in the open air. So they decided to have it redesigned as a guest house. The truth is, sometimes things don’t turn out as planned. Sometimes they turn out a lot better. And a lot better it turned out for the residents of this luxury villa, whose happy idea to convert their little-used pool house into a very luxurious guest house resulted in the beautiful chalet you see in the pictures.

77

77

Home Couture

Jason Harris, Creative Director and CEO of UDesign, responsible for the design, construction and interior decoration of both the villa and its stunning new guest house, was also delighted with the results. “It was a chalet designed as a pool house, so that people could lounge around and chat in it, but the villa owners found that they and their guests were not actually using it much for this purpose, or for any purpose, in fact. That’s because the gardens and poolside were so attractive. So they thought: why not make some modifications to it and turn it into a full chalet, where guests would feel very comfortable in. They had no idea it would become what it now is: a sophisticated and beautifully designed guest house almost on par with the main residence, only smaller.” Architects and designers, of course, like to start with a blank slate, and this slate was not blank. But it was eminently suited to a kind of mini-villa, with a large lounge area that UDesign excels in.

“IT’S NOT ONLY ELEGANT AND SOPHISTICATED IT’S GREAT FUN TOO” 78

Furthermore, as every creator knows, the discipline imposed by limitation is frequently the spur that pushes the artist to greater heights of creativity. And so it happened; the stylish structure with its symmetrical interior and high ceilings became just what the architects might well have designed

Home Couture

from the very start, had they been granted a clean slate. The under-used pool house became an elegant and sophisticated guest house. “It’s not only elegant and sophisticated,” says Jason, “it’s great fun too. We wanted what we’ve already talked about, but we also

wanted to introduce an element of fun and excitement into the project, with colour, artworks and vegetation. It’s not always you get the chance to do this. You’ve got to have the right kind of client. We aimed for something a little over the top, something that people would walk into and be instantly surprised by. Gobsmacked,

even. Guests would expect a stylish guest room in such a grand villa, but hardly this. They would not expect to be accomodated in what is, in essence, a scaled-down version of the main house, with everything they’d need and have available in the main house, except smaller.”

79

Home Couture

80

Home Couture

Small is relative here, because the structure is not small, as we can see from the accompanying images. It comprises the large lounge we see, as well as a sizeable master bedroom, a hidden kitchen and other essential spaces, and its own gymnasium and spa, all surrounded by lush gardens and the pool. “We managed to re-design the entire space using natural materials as much as possible, as we do in all our projects, with real stone and real wood. You walk in and the first thing that catches your eye is the life-size bronze sculpture in the centre of that area, which you’d never have expected in a simple guest room. Then you notice other paintings and sculptures, all with the space in front of them to admire from a distance. What they might not notice at first is the sheer elegance of the place, the very creative design that went into it, but this is as it should be. Great design does not always jump out at you, but often touches your soul in a gentler way.” At a more mundane level, this is a useful space that guests can enjoy to the full. They will not be expected to cook for themselves, but they can if they want to, and if they can find the kitchen: it is well hidden behind panelling, but functional. They can dine with their own guests in the dining area, watch television, work out in their own gym, relax in their own spa, work or play on their respective devices or sit around and chat, as their fancy takes them. In short, there is little they cannot do while guests in this beautiful building.

81

Home Couture

“GREAT DESIGN DOES NOT ALWAYS JUMP OUT AT YOU, BUT OFTEN TOUCHES YOUR SOUL IN A GENTLER WAY.”

82

Home Couture

“We love its location,” says Jason. “The pool was built surrounded by nature, and the new guest chalet, quite apart from being beside the pool, is also surrounded by lush vegetation that you can see from every window. As we always do in warm-weather locations, we ensured that the line between inside and out is blurred, with large glass entrances and windows opening out completely, and floor design that takes no account of strict interior-exterior lines. And the work that went into the illumination gives it a beauty of quite a different kind by night.” Designer furniture and fittings throughout, exquisite design both in detail and in the whole, and that extra spark of creativity that is not so easy to describe in words alone. This is now the guest chalet, and if the problem in the past was getting people into it, the problem in the future may well be getting people out of it.

Back in the late 1960s, the British social hierarchy was far more apparent, and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars was very selective about whom they felt should be given the privilege of purchasing one of their hand crafted vehicles.

A certain chart topping pop group from Liverpool who called themselves ‘The Beatles’ discovered this to their chagrin when the world’s premier manufacturer of bespoke motorcars declined their request to buy a new car. It was made clear that custodianship of one of these masterpieces on wheels was not about to fall to four scruffy, long-haired, improperly spoken lads who quite clearly knew the price of everything and the value of nothing. However, the world has changed dramatically in the intervening years. Today, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will sell to anyone who can pay the asking price, and their sales staff are no longer public school educated toffs who have chosen to sell bespoke luxury cars to their peers rather than going into banking or some other ‘respectable’ profession. Time, as they say, is the great equaliser, and time has dramatically widened the spread of clients that today’s Rolls-Royce models engage. On the one hand, you have football players and self-made

stately Rolls-Royce Phantom with vulgar aftermarket add-ons simply for the sake of standing out from the crowd. Behold, the moneyed intruder is at the gate! If we can all agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then I would suggest that the best thing to do when personalising such a vehicle is to exercise the utmost restraint. I was certainly pleased to note such restraint in action when making first contact with the Spofec Rolls-Royce Ghost. On the other hand I was not surprised as this modestly tuned car comes from the same family as Novitec Rosso, whose Ferrari conversions are renowned for their tasteful appearance and bulletproof technical upgrades. millionaires living the rags to riches dream, and on the other, the traditional clientele comprised of royalty and captains of industry. The new side sills are made in different lengths to suit the normal and Extended Wheelbase versions. These and the three-piece rear bumper are also fashioned from carbon-fibre. The final part of the aero kit is the rear bootlid spoiler. While the bumpers and sills come in primer, ready to be painted, the bootlid spoiler is finished in visible carbon for a sporting look. That said, you can have it colour-coded to the bodywork if you so wish. Even with the styling kit in place, most people would not notice that the car had been modified. It is the matt grey paintwork and matt black treatment of all the chrome work, particularly the big front grille that really draws attention to the car.

FIRST HOWEVER, ONE NEEDS TO BE MADE AWARE OF WHAT SPOFEC MEANS. IF I WERE TO SEE THIS WORD OUT OF CONTEXT FOR THE FIRST TIME, MY FIRST REACTION WOULD BE THAT IT SOUNDS LIKE AN EVIL ORGANISATION FROM A JAMES BOND MOVIE. THINK SMERSH, SPECTRE AND ERNST STAVRO BLOFELD.

The reality however, is that SPOFEC was born from the first two letters of SPirit OF ECstasy, the flying lady whose miniature effigy statue graces the radiator top of every Rolls-Royce motor car. As with the Novitec Rosso Ferrari’s the actual bodywork changes to the stately Ghost are minimal, and what there are embody the maxim of form follows function. Starting at the front, a complete new carbon-fibre bumper incorporates larger air intakes and a small spoiler lip on each side to reduce lift over the front axle. The front bumpers are slightly altered between the Series 1 and 2 Ghosts due to the changes to the lights on the face-lifted version.

Spofec’s CAN-Tronic suspension lowering module drops the ride height of the air suspension by a significant 40mm up to 140km/h. If you wish to trick with the factory wheels, Spofec has 12mm and 15mm aluminium wheel spacers to push the front and rear wheels closer to the arch lips for a more purposeful stance. Otherwise, squeezing what daylight is left from the big wheel arches, and completing the ‘bad boy’ look, is down to 9.0J and 10.5J x 22-inch matte black alloys shod with 265/35ZR22 and 295/30ZR22 Pirelli PZero rubber. Behind these big wheels are a set of massive high performance carbonceramic brakes featuring 405 x 30mm vented discs in front and 395 x 38mm vented discs at the rear with matching brake pads. Although much larger and more effective than the stock steel brakes, this upgraded brake kit removes a whopping 38kg from the cars unsprung weight. With the chassis and brakes sorted the extra engine power extracted by the Spofec N-tronic ECU upgrade can be taken on-line. N-tronic is a Plug & Play electronic box fitted to the car via a bespoke wiring harness, and sits between the factory ECU and the engine. Activated via the Touch controller, the revised engine mapping works on both part and full throttle.

88 88

TORQUE TALK TALK TORQUE

In the old days, Rolls-Royce considered revealing the power figures of their cars to be an exercise in vulgar indulgence, and simply stated that engine output was ‘adequate’.

With N-tronic activated the output of the twin-turbo V12 motor is ramped up from 570hp to 685hp at 5,700rpm, while torque is increased from an already healthy 780Nm to 958Nm at a low 1,800rpm. Against the stopwatch on a dry road, the Spofec Ghost leaves the line in a most undignified manner, clocking the 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.5 sec. If that is not enough for you, Spofec also offers an upgrade for the Ghost V-Spec model, which leaves the Goodwood factory with 601hp and 780Nm. The resultant 709hp and 974Nm of torque drop the 0-100km/h time to a caddish 4.4 sec. The only mechanical aid to performance is the Spofec stainless steel sports exhaust option, from which you can choose versions with and without flap regulation. A further option is a radio control system to operate the flaps from the cabin by radio. In a sporting car, the driver usually gets an impression of raw speed by an increase in noise and vibration, but as

this is a RollsRoyce, such plebeian measures are simply not in this equation. If waftability is a strong suit of the standard Ghost, its effect is only magnified by the significant torque boost from the Spofec engine upgrade. Despite the subtly sporty exhaust on this car, its ability to gobble up the tarmac with next to no drama is simply breathtaking. Press the throttle down and it just picks up its skirts and flies, and fortunately also has the cornering and braking abilities to match.

The factory has no such inhibitions today, and the standard Ghost certainly has adequate power and torque. So how should we describe the enhanced output of the Spofec Ghost? The answer is a simple...

‘more than adequate!’

MEAT IS THE MATTER By Ian Greenland

As if recycling, using public transport, not burning tyres, spraying aerosols or slapping polar bears wasn’t enough, now the so-called “experts” are telling us to put down that steak and pick up a carrot if we want to stand any chance of saving the planet (well, not the planet so much as humankind’s increasingly precarious place atop it...) The scientific consensus, based on such ridiculous notions as facts, statistics, and errr, science, as opposed to belligerence, bile and bottom lines is that our global consumption habits are at present (big surprise...) completely, epically unsustainable. “It’s bollocks though isn’t it? It’s just a bit of drive-thru chicken and a Big Mac. Would they prefer it if we were still scrabbling round in the weeds for nuts and berries, getting trampled by wooly mammoths? It’s bad enough we have to pick our own cotton and can’t

96

slap Margaret on the arse next to the photocopier any more (how is that not a compliment??) - now the fun-police are telling us what we can’t eat!??!” Of course you don’t have to listen to the “experts” (Or this mostly veggie loudmouth). The proof’s in the black pudding. Climate change, which if anyone is still in any doubt about - as the latest tornado whisks the tinfoil hat off their bonce - is REAL and it’s being massively exacerbated by the meat industry, with a third of planet-heating gases a direct result of animal farming. Even ignoring some pretty compelling arguments about cruelty, animal sentience etc, meat production is just bad maths. Once you’ve flattened another acre of rainforest (every six seconds) for cattle farming, it requires approx 15,000 litres of water input into the system to output just one kilogram of beef (saying nothing of the monumental

infrastructure and carbon footprint created to enable the system) In fairness, that’s only 1700 litres of water (15 full bathtubs) towards that quarter pounder. Chicken at least is more efficient than beef, requiring only nine calories input for every one calorie output. That’s a poor rate of return. Incidentally, these aren’t numbers dreamed up by conspiracy theorists, it’s data coming out of the meat industry.

“Yeah, well if climate change is real...” IT’S REAL “...and sea levels are rising, then surely it’s a good thing to use up lots of water? Get out of that one.” Sit down before you hurt yourself. Another problem is that animals piss. Animals shit. Animals fart and burp (Cows and other farmed animals produce around 40% of the methane currently overheating the globe). When you crowd them together by the thousands (and tens of thousands...), it necessitates a lot of animal waste pumped into the waterways and mechanically sprayed (Google it) onto adjoining land. Of course, it’s not just animal waste, it’s animal waste containing trace antibiotics, topical antiseptics, bactericides, fungicides and many other medical interventions needed to keep

masses of beasts crammed together in their own filth from not festering toooo much. Mmmmmm, that quarter pounder....

Meat, without the blood, shit and suffering – it’s simply gonna be too weird for a lot of people, no doubt inciting the sort of frothing rage and paranoia the vaccines to our latest zoonotic plague have. There’s gonna be some serious facepalming.

In fact, 80% of the world’s antibiotics are consumed within the meat industry Not by the spotty trainees at McDonalds who give each other tonsillitis – but to promote “healthy” animal growth. The risk is by over-medicating livestock to avoid millions of customers biting into weeping sores and the like, we’re instead incubating resistance to antibiotics in superbugs which can further spread their antibiotic immunity to other bacteria, passing from animals to humans. Since we put such stock in the use of antibiotics (with professionals only relatively recently beginning to curb their over-application), microbial resistance is a genuine threat to, well, no less than modern medicine!! (Google it if you’re feeling brave) It’s a threat large sectors of the meat industry are all but ignoring. We are of course crawling through a pandemic at this moment which itself originated in the animal markets of China and terrifyingly, experts agree is likely a mere dress rehearsal for the next big pandemic as the spiralling global population’s unsustainable demand for meat creates breeding grounds for pathogens. 75% of emerging diseases are zoonotic, meaning they originate in

animals. Ebola, SARS, MERS, and Zika all pre-empted our latest battle with bacteria with devastating effects and when the statistics suggest the global population will demand a doubling of meat production by the year 2050 (FAO), the whole picture looks grimmer than a Wimpy’s at a service station.

Plant-based alternatives to meat with lower carbon footprints have grown in popularity and quality, but are still outpaced by growing global demand for real dead animal. “Cultivated/labgrown” meat is a potential future game-changer, though its struggle remains uphill. On a cellular level, it IS meat. Clean, pesticide, disease and antibioticfree meat cultured under rigorous lab conditions which never saw it wallow in faeces or shrink in fear from a bloodyaproned abattoir worker with a boltgun. Meat, without the blood, shit and suffering – it’s simply gonna be too weird for a lot of people, no doubt inciting the sort of frothing rage and paranoia the vaccines to our latest zoonotic plague have. There’s gonna be some serious face-palming.

But then the shaming and polarisation of our culture wars will ultimately harm us all. Virtue-signalling and weaponising of labels like “Vegan” or “Vegetarian” just gives others something to push back on with intransigence at a time where a coordinated effort and reevaluation of what’s healthy or sustainable is desperately needed. The bullying actions of some militant vegan protestors in my hometown of Brighton a couple of years back had many of my plant-based mates wanting to chuck dogs at them. Perhaps one day we’ll fully reckon with the vastness of the slaughter we perpetuate behind closed gates for the food on our tables but right now just taking a little accountability for the reality of its unsustainability is a start. Any individual’s intentional reduction in meat consumption should be applauded, not negated from someone else’s moral high-ground as not enough. Someone who decides to eat meat two days of the week instead of four is benefitting the environment just as much as a twicea-weeker who goes full veggie... they just don’t get that particular hummusstained T-shirt.

COSTA CUISINE

Smallworld

big taste By Leah Castillo Smallworld is the perfect cafe hangout. It describes itself as ‘an urban oasis in the heart of the golden mile’, and as we found out, it really is a wonderful retreat, where exciting dishes and customer experience are the main priority. Open from 12:30pm until 01:00am Monday to Saturday, Smallworld serves lunch, a fine dining dinner, and late night cocktails. On this occasion I visited with a friend. We instantly felt relaxed, the staff were so welcoming, helpful, and passionate. Browsing the menu we were instantly drawn to the tuna tataki, one of Smallworlds staple dishes, which was served with fresh edamame beans, a spicy yellow aji sauce, and finished with spring onion and the fresh crunch of cucumber.

Smallworld salad - a colourful, nourishing bowl of delicious goodness

Taste buds sufficiently excited, we decided to order a bottle of Cuveé Des Lices Rosé, as recommended by our waitress - because no meal is complete without a wonderful bottle of wine to match. The next plate we ordered was the buffalo chicken wings… and these aren’t your average chicken wings. The tender meat was encased in a light batter, and the meat - so succulent - fell off the bone. On the side was a Carolina slaw: acidic, creamy, crunchy - the perfect accompaniment. For our main course we opted for the duck pancakes. Our duck was served perfectly crisp, alongside the standard sides of spring onion, cucumber, and a sweet hoisin sauce. We generously piled up our pancakes, which were made of coconut, savouring every, single mouthful.

98

COSTA CUISINE

On the side we had the Smallworld salad - a colourful, nourishing bowl of delicious goodness, drizzled in a light french mustard dressing. The option to add cajun chicken was far too tempting to refuse. Our next dish I was a little skeptical about. ‘Pumpkin Tower’ sounded rather ambiguous, but I always did like to take a risk… and it certainly paid off. Infact, it might just have been one of my favourite dishes of the evening: the roasted pumpkin was piled high, layered with sauteed spinach, drizzled with truffle oil, and finished with a poached egg; the golden yolk oozing down the side of the tower.

are also accommodated for, just let the waiter know when you arrive, and they’ll happily make sure the chef caters to your requirements. Tucked away, just a few minutes from the main town of Marbella, Smallworld feels like my own personal hideaway… but I have a feeling it won’t be for long. Add this one to your list, you won’t regret it. @smallworldmarbella smallworldcafe.com

No meal is complete without something sweet, and I just can’t resist a warm, gooey brownie when it’s on the menu. Everything I wanted and more, the brownie was served with a soft vanilla ice cream, and drizzled with a chocolate syrup. My friend went for the blueberry cheesecake, which was surprisingly light and creamy. We cleared our plates in seconds, chasing the sweet dessert down with one of Smallworlds signature coffees. I have a feeling this boho-chic hangout could fast become one of my new favourite go-tos: delicious food, friendly staff, and an exciting cocktail menu to match. Those who prefer to eat a more plant-based diet or gluten-free menu
