Ladies who Lycra
For anyone who may be unaware, our Society Marbella community facebook group is still available to advertise small and medium sized businesses… for free: @Society Marbella community. As explained in the “rules” section of the group, if you have a 5 million euro villa for sale, then please don’t send it in, as we won’t publish. We currently have 7.200 GENUINE local followers, (not to be confused with 20.000 eastern Europeans with no idea of where Marbella is tut tut.)
We advertise scores of different genres of business, from airport transfers to butchers, cake makers, handymen to babysitters, oh, and around 50 assorted yogis and yoginis, (formerly known as hippies) so feel free to continue to support each other.
Which brings me onto my title… over the last two years every other phrase seemingly included “the Chinese virus”, “take the vaccine to protect those around you and prevent onward transmission”, “gargle with bleach” or “bring your own booze”. Fast forward and the aforementioned have been replaced with “wellness”, “mindfulness”, (is that not just another word for thinking?) and “Yoga”! It’s literally everywhere.
If you’re aged between 18 and 80 with a spare yoga mat, you have suddenly become fit to impart your wellness wisdom on unwitting friends and neighbours. The once popular and casual “sleepover” is a thing of the past and is now marketed as a retreat! As any leisurely stroll on the San Pedro Paseo will testify, we have become a community of ill-fitting lycra wearers, willing to pay “someone hairy” a tenner to tell us how to do a downward dog. Gone are the days when the yummy mummies were graded according to their 4x4’s. These mini communes of female contortionists are now judged on perfect poses, knowledge of pulses and who was the first one to stop eating chicken.
Elsewhere, we learn how anal beads (yes you read that correctly) are currently the latest “must have” accessory for any budding chess master. The Setenta Concept Store in San Pedro showcases their Autumn collections and we learn what’s next for cover star Zoe Saldana of Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy fame, whilst Kane McClean explains what the winter holds for Chilli FM.

Zoë Yadira Saldaña Nazario was born Jun 19, 1978 in Passaic, New Jersey to a Puerto Rican mother and Dominican father. Her father died in a car accident when she was nine years old, following which her mother relocated the family to the Dominican Republic to stay with their grandparents. There she practised ballet at one of the most prestigious schools in the country.
Zoe grew up bilingual, speaking English and Spanish, and has two sisters, named Cisely and Mariel.
Zoe returned to New York at the age of 17 where she began getting involved in theatre groups. It was her spectacular performance in the show, ‘Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat’ for the New York Youth Theatre group that earned her a place at a talent agency. After two small guest appearances in Law & Order, Zoe, thanks to her dance training, landed her first role in 2001’s Centre Stage about students at a New York ballet school.
Teen flicks, Get Over It and Britney Spears’ movie Crossroads followed,
she then had a supporting role in the higher-profile movie Drumline and a small part as a female pirate in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. In 2004 Zoe starred alongside Tom Hanks as an immigration agent in Steven Spielberg’s The Terminal.
In 2009 Zoe landed two iconic roles, as Lieut. Uhura in Star Trek, and as Neytiri in James Cameron’s sci-fi film, Avatar. She then went on to portray Uhura again in Star Trek into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond. She also played the green-skinned warrior princess Gamora in the sci-fi superhero blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy. A role she reprised for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Infinity Way and Avengers: Endgame. Amidst all the high-profile characters, Zoe also appeared in the comedy, Death at a Funeral and thrillers, The Losers, Colombiana and Out of Furnace and played the singer Nina Simone in the biopic, Nina.
In 2010, Zoe won multiple awards in the ‘Best Actress’ category for her role of Neytiri in Avatar. The awards include:
‘Academy of Science, Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films’, ‘Empire Awards’, ‘Saturn Awards’ and ‘Teen Choice Movie Actress - Sci Fi’. Additionally, her character of Neytiri won the Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Feature Motion Film by Visual Effects Society Awards.
The same year Zoe also got engaged to Keith Britton, an actor and CEO of My Fashion Database but the duo parted ways the following year, ending their 11year relationship.
While filming the movie, The Worlds, in 2011 Zoe met Bradley Cooper, they dated for a year but not long after breaking up the actress met ‘the one’, Italian artist, Marco Perego. The couple married in June 2013 after just a couple of months of dating and now have three children together, twins Cy and Bowie born in 2014 and Zen born in 2017.
After a long wait, this year Zoe will reprise her role as Neytiri in Avatar: The Way of Water. 12 years are the fantasy epic was first released, the first trailer for Avatar 2 was released last month. While the trailer doesn’t give much away, but no doubt the breath-taking visuals that await us in the return to Pandora will be sure to blow our minds.

Originally released on November 30th, 1982 and produced by Quincy Jones, Thriller earnt Jackson eight Grammy Awards and spent 37 non-consecutive weeks at number one from February 26, 1983, to April 14, 1984, and more than 500 weeks on the Billboard Album Chart.
2 THE PRETTY RECKLESS
– Other Worlds
A year and a half after the release of their fourth album Death by Rock and Roll, The Pretty Reckless share their latest project, Other Worlds. Unlike a traditional album of all new material, Other Worlds sees The Pretty Reckless play some covers, as well as acoustic versions and remixes of a few of their Death by Rock and Roll tracks. Guests on the album include Matt Cameron, David Bowie’s pianist Mike Garson and multi-instrumentalist Alain Johannes. “For a long time, we’ve been trying to figure out an alternative way of releasing music, including songs we love that didn’t make our records, covers, and alternate versions,” frontwoman, Momsen stated in a press release. “We found a way to do this coherently and consistently with Other Worlds. We’re a rock band, so there are lots of electric guitars on our records. However, we’ve gotten incredible feedback from fans about our acoustic performances, and we’d never put those out in any real format. So, this is a different take on the traditional format of a record and a stripped back version of us that our fans haven’t really heard before, but it’s still us.”
3 LOUIS TOMLINSON – Faith in the Future
Faith in the Future follows Tomlinson’s debut solo studio album, Walls, which was released in January 2020. It peaked at No. 9 in the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and charted No. 1 in Mexico, Argentina, Portugal and Scotland. The new album, features production and song writing from a vast list of collaborators, including Rob Harvey, Dan Grech, Nico Rebscher, Joe Cross, and Hurts frontman Theo Hutchcraft. Talking of the new release, Louis shared, “If I’m being honest, I could have made a second record that would be a bigger commercial hit than this will be. I am confident in that,” he said. Craving something more meaningful, Tomlinson continued, “If I can pull off an album like I think I have, that is something that I would actually listen to, sits in line with the stuff that I love and more fulfilling than having a f***ing No.1 record. Because I got loads of them in a band.”

Based on the best-selling book of the same name, Devotion is an aerial war epic telling the harrowing true story of two elite US Navy fighter pilots during the Korean War. The film shares the story and comradeship between Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner. BELOW DECK ADVENTURE: SERIES 1
Starring: Faye Clarke, Kerry Titheradge, Oriana Schneps, Jessica Condy, Kasie Faddah
The new Below Deck spinoff takes the crew and guests aboard a mega-yacht as they experience adrenaline-pumping activities along the Norwegian Fjords. DEAD TO ME: SEASON 3
Starring: Christina Applegate, Linda Cardellini, James Marsden
The beloved dark comedy returns; Dead to Me’s first season gained an impressive 30 million streams in the first month alone, with viewers watching to see how the friendship between two women who meet at a grief support group evolves and then devolves as a twisted truth comes to light. At the end of season two, the pair were involved in a road traffic accident as Ben crashed into them.
While Judy looked fine, Jen wasn’t in the best way and appeared completely knocked out in the final moments. Thankfully, a last-minute sarcastic comment showed us she is, at the very least, alive. Picking up where Season Two left off expect to see Jen and Judy once again in a big mess, and Ben frantically trying to dump his car and pretend that he was elsewhere.
MANIFEST: SEASON 4
Starring: Melissa Roxburgh, Josh Dallas, J.R. Ramirez
Manifest is back for a fourth and final series. The third season aired in June 2021 and the show left viewers with questions and some nail-biting cliffhangers in the season finale. FROM SCHOOL TO SCREEN
Traditionally the casting process involves an audition tape, but, breaking away from the usual method, the director selected Vivian based on a previously filmed showreel monologue recorded at Marbella Film School. The character portrayed on the showreel happened to be similar to the type of persona that was ideal for the part of Lola.
The film was shot in Greece in 2021 and is a redemption story about a Miami mob enforcer. The protagonist, Cuda
(Banderas), saves a young runaway whom he has befriended after learning that his cybersex trafficking boss, played by Kate Bosworth, has put the girl’s life in danger.
Grabbing an opportunity with both hands has paid off for Vivian, as this is a glittering start to a promising acting career.
We spoke to the talented young actor to hear what she had to say about her filming experience.
One of Marbella Film School students has landed a role alongside Antonio Banderas in the new crime thriller, The Enforcer. 14-year-old Vivian Milkova was cast as Lola after honing her craft and skills at Marbella Film School.

Q&A with Vivian Milkova:
l Can you reveal a bit about your character and tell us how you prepared for the role?
I play the role of Lola, a typical teenage girl looking forward to her 16th birthday when she suddenly crosses paths with her father, Cuda, with whom she doesn’t have the most stable relationship.
I prepared for the character mainly by choosing songs that helped me connect with her and put myself in her shoes whenever I wanted to.
l How was your experience on set?
I had the opportunity to share the set with an amazing crew, and I became great friends with a girl I was on screen with. Also, even though I only ended up acting opposite Antonio Banderas, I was extremely grateful to see Kate Bosworth backstage. Banderas is a genuinely nice person, and I couldn’t be happier, for my first time, to be in the same movie with an actor of such a high rank.
I’m very thankful to the film director, Richard Hughes, for choosing me to be a part of this huge project.
l In which way did acting classes at Marbella Film School help you?
Everything I know about the industry and what it is to act in front of a camera is thanks to my teacher, Nicole Moerland, whether it is about self-confidence, techniques required to portray any character or the challenges we, as actors, might face.
l What will be next for you, and what are your career ambitions?
Lots of castings and hopefully many projects ahead of me. I invest a lot in activities. For example, horse riding and surfing to gain knowledge and make my portfolio more appealing. Acting is my passion, and I want to go far with it. I like meeting new people, getting to know other actors and having fun along the way.
Regarding the type of roles that I would like to play; I think they are all unique
on their own. The beauty of developing characters based on their internal world is what makes me want to do it even more.
l What advice would you give to young actors beginning their careers?
Some people think it isn’t necessary, but in my experience, it is essential to find the correct acting classes or at least search for online courses to gain experience. Headshots and especially showreels will help you showcase what you’re capable of. Also, don’t forget to enjoy the process!

GOOD JAMES
BREAKING HEARTS
Noel Gallagher has shared heart-breaking news for fans of Oasis that he doesn’t think there’s any point in the band ever getting back together. Oasis parted ways permanently in 2009 due to a feud between brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher, but fans have always held out hope that the pair could put their differences aside and reunite one day. However, Noel recently squashed a reunion happening anytime soon, or if ever, by revealing that financially there is ‘no point’ for the band to reform. When asked on the subject he responded ‘Er, would you go on holiday with your ex-Mrs?!’ continuing, ‘As funny as this sounds, Oasis sell as many records now per year as we did when we were together. ‘We’re as popular now in the eyes of the people as we ever were. And I’m happy with it. ‘If we got back together there would be a circus – and there’s no point. Just leave it as it is. I’m happy. He’s [Liam Gallagher] doing his thing. He’s still selling out Knebworth. It’s like, mate, good luck to you, do you know what I mean?’
BAD JAMES
It looks like James Corden will be missing out on cheap flights this year as lowbudget airline Ryanair has banned him from using their services following an incident in a New York restaurant where Cordon was ‘extremely nasty’ to the staff. Corden apologised profusely to Keith McNally, the owner of Balthazar in Manhattan, after he was briefly barred following allegations he had been unpleasant to employees on two separate occasions. However, it seems Ryanair remains unimpressed as it declared on its official Twitter account: ‘James Corden BANNED from Ryanair.’
ALWAYS CONTROVERSIAL
The mother of George Floyd’s daughter has sued Kanye West for 250 million dollars in the wake of his controversial comments about Floyd’s death at the hands of a Minnesota police officer. In the lawsuit, Roxie Washington, the mother of Gianna Floyd said West made, ‘false statements about George Floyd’s death to promote his brands, and increase marketing value and revenue for himself, his business partners and associates.” It comes after the rapper made an appearance on the US podcast Drink Champs, where he claimed Mr Floyd was killed by a fentanyl overdose, in contrast to a medical examiner’s testimony.

Actor Daniel Craig has received the same honour as his character James Bond after being awarded a CMG for services to film and theatre. Craig was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George by the Princess Royal last month at Windsor Castle. The 54-year-old has starred in the last five Bond films, first appearing as 007 in Casino Royale in 2006 and ending his run with No Time To Die in 2021. Congratulations to Daniel Craig!
BORN INTO
Music
Cardi B and Offset are now the proud parents of a baby boy having welcomed their second child. The Grammy award winning rapper announced the birth via Instagram. In a statement, the couple said: “We are so overjoyed to finally meet our son. “He is already loved so much by family and friends and we can’t wait to introduce him to his other siblings.” The hip-hop couple are also parents to three-year-old daughter Kulture. Having married in 2017, the pair previously filed for divorce in 2020 but reconciled in October last year.
ROD TO THE RESCUE
Sir Rod Stewart has revealed he’s rented a home and paid the bills for a family of seven Ukrainian refugees. The pop star has rented a Berkshire home for Ukrainian couple
Rostylsav and Olena and their five children for at least a year. Sir Rod shared, ‘It just makes me want to do more. I am thinking of getting another house now and getting a lot more people over.’ ‘I usually keep all my charitable efforts nice and quiet and just do it. But I thought, ‘I am a knight, I have been given this knighthood because of the things I’ve achieved in my life and the charity work I’ve done over the years. But that was the past; I want to be seen to be doing something now. I am a knight; I should be using my power to do something for people. I am sure that if there are people out there who see what I am doing, they will pick up some slack too.’
NEVER TOO LATE
Hilary Swank has revealed she is pregnant with twins at the age of 48. “I’m so happy to share it with you and with America right now, this is something that I’ve been wanting for a long time, and my next thing is I’m going to be a mom,” the Oscar winner announced on Good Morning America. “I’m going to be a mom - and not just of one but of two. I can’t believe it.” Hilary and her husband have been married for four years after meeting on a blind date in 2016.

Blogging can be fun or a medium for more serious subjects. Plenty of writers, small groups or corporations find it a popular and informal way of communication. The short copy makes it easy to digest information and can be used for business or personal needs. The word is a truncation of web + log, and the practise dates back to 1994. This month’s blog topics cover going green, adorable animals and awful architecture.
>> eco warrior princess
Writer Jennifer Nini has created a blog with a social conscience. Founded in 2012, Eco Warrior Princess has been giving advice on eating ethically, sustainable clothing, how to dispose of plastic, and living on this planet with an as little carbon footprint as possible. The content is intelligent and informative, with tips on veganism, which corporations are the world’s biggest plastic polluters, and a guide to zero-waste living.
Taking small steps and making little changes are fine also; it all helps. The blog covers news, lifestyle, business, fashion, beauty and wellness. There is also an Instagram page to follow. www.ecowarriorprincess.net

Pets! Everyone’s favourite subject! I’m talking about those furry/feathery/scaly/spikey (delete as appropriate) creatures who live in our homes and gardens, or do we live in theirs? That’s what those adorable little beings would have us believe anyway. Living with a different species (I’m not talking about the opposite sex) means we should try to understand their needs, which is where Pet Blog Lady comes in. Full of expert advice and recommendations, the blog guides us on our journey with our precious pets. Topics include everything from how to pick the correct collar for your dog to bringing home a chinchilla. The tagline is ‘Celebrating our Pets’, so celebrate our pets we will. www.PetBlogLady.com
>> mcmansion hell
This is a little gem; it’s a blog about bad architecture. It is funny, informative and fascinating. I don’t know if it’s down to bad taste, but I wouldn’t have flagged up some of these designs. Maybe it’s my untrained eye that let me down. See if you would find the aesthetics of some of these homes jarring by checking them out for yourself. Kate Wagner writes the blog, and she rightly points out that it isn’t all about looks, it’s what’s inside that counts, too, as some designs are just downright impractical. It is inefficient planning at its finest. There is a page of subsections covering landscaping, windows, roofs and more. www.McMansionHell.com

PODCASTS THAT SPEAK TO YOU!
An efficient way of mainlining information is through the ears because you can do it hands-free, so you can press play on these podcasts anytime, anywhere. Driving, running, relaxing or cleaning, that’s how convenient the episodic, digital audio or video files are. They can be downloaded so you can listen when the mood takes you. The word itself is a portmanteau of iPod and broadcast. This month’s recommendations will educate and take you back in time. History podcasts are not the way you remember history lessons at school with the teacher in the cat hair jumper and Jeffrey Dahmer-style glasses. Oh no, this is fascinating stuff. There are ex-pats living in Spain, which might sound like a familiar scenario to some of you. There are also celebrity interviews, so you can get to know your favourite famous figure.
>> behind the bastards
566 episodes of the weird, macabre and bizarre. The episodes contain bad humans, dictators, the CIA, the FBI, and mind-control experiments; I bet you are brimming with curiosity now. The series is hosted by Robert Evans, an American author and journalist who was also an editor of the humour website, Cracked. He is joined by high-calibre guests, which include the celebrated writer Jason Pargin. The topics are well-researched, and there is banter to lighten the dark content, which is always jaw-dropping.
Available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Audible
>> the living in spain series with david wright
David has been living and working in Spain for 19 years, so he has all of the advice about the Mediterranean way of life; he is also a local guest expert on Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun. The episodes cover lots of ground with anything from driving licenses and getting married here to the cost of building a swimming pool and how to get cheaper energy bills.
David aims to save fellow expats time, stress and money.
Available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts
>> grounded with louis theroux
Louis Theroux started the podcast in 2020 during the lockdown. He used the opportunity of being stuck at home to corner some famous names he had longed to talk to. The guests are a mixed bag of ‘slebs’, which is handy because there will be someone of interest for most listeners. Actor Miriam Margoles is always good value for money, and so is comedian Frankie Boyle. At least the conversation will never run dry with either of those two!

If you thought summer was spicy...
We caught up with Kane again from Chilli FM Radio during his busy schedule, and asked how the summer went and what’s next on the horizon.

"Since we last spoke, our listener figures have continued to soar every month. After the launch of our Saturday 'Chilli Shoutouts' show , where listeners send in voice-messages via WhatsApp during the week and we play them on the Saturday show, exploded. We had to create a repeat show on Wednesdays called 'Shoutouts the Echo', so people could listen to their Shoutouts who missed the show on Saturday. It's been remarkable, the interest listeners have shown in getting involved, we are still amazed."
Do you think it’s just because people just want to hear their voice on the radio, or another reason?
We've been running the show for a couple of months now and the content people send us varies. Some like to simply give a message out to a loved one with a song request, some people use it to plug their business because it's free exposure for them, and others compliment the station and the music we play. It's all sorts, and all makes for a fun variety show never heard on the costa del sol before.
That's great, and do you have any new projects in the pipeline?
Yes. We are a community-based station and we support everything locally on the costa del sol, so we are currently working on a new listenerinteraction page on the Chilli website, where people can submit future events coming up. This will not only be live for everyone to read online, but also give content for our ‘What’s On’ segment on our ‘live’ Friday Feeling summer breakfast show.
We will 'live read' various events, and this is a totally free service we are providing for the public. It's like free advertising. Again, another Chilli first.
It's great to hear you are championing the community cause, not everyone can say that, do you have any new radio shows coming up?
Oh yes! our mission is to never stand still. We are always evolving and we have a big surprise for everyone in the new year, I can't say too much more about it now or it will spoil the impact.
And Christmas is only 6 weeks away, are you planning any staff parties?
For sure. It's been a very successful second year, and all the Chilli team have worked so hard and deserve to let their hair down. It's going to be the hottest party on the coast.
Every week this month, Chilli FM are giving away €100 CASH to the most original Shoutout of the week.
Each week, the final Shoutout we play will be announced as this week’s winner, and the studio will contact you after the show to give you your cash prize.
So, start sending in your Shoutouts as soon as possible to 717 12 12 12.
To send us a ‘Shoutout’, RECORD A VOICEFILE IN WHATSAPP and send to 717 12 12 12.
That’s €100 each week, every week, all through November.
Then tune in every Saturday morning at 10 for the ‘ Chilli Shoutouts show’ or the repeat show on Wednesdays, ‘Shoutouts The Echo’ , same time.
Good luck!

Six years after it exploded, TikTok’s popularity shows no signs of slowing down. Usage continues to increase each day. Its rise has been meteoric; there are over 1 billion active users, and the app has been downloaded a whopping 3 billion times. Their demographic is 13 – 30-year-olds, which encompasses Gen Z and Millennials. Brands are tapping into the advertising potential that this presents. Trends on social media tend to spread like wildfire, and companies are beginning to realise this. Short-form video appeals to our quick consumerist society for content and material items. Genres which gain traction on the app are music (including lip-syncing), challenges, pranks and comedy. A video is likely to go viral if it is short and has humour, capturing the joy of the app. Because the platform’s algorithm doesn’t recommend videos based on the number of followers an account has, just about anybody can go viral, but you still need a strategy. A brand’s marketing team will create awareness and interest, getting potential customers to engage with the business. They hope they will then consider the product and take action, e.g. purchase something. According to the social media management platform Hootsuite, TikTok is the top app for driving consumer spending, even though it hasn’t got a click-to-shop functionality like Instagram. Here are some of the companies that have utilised TikTok…
The Italian fashion house’s approach to TikTok advertising began two years ago. They have built up success on the app from viral user challenges, connecting Gucci to a younger generation of consumers. TikToker Morgan Presley invented the #GucciModelChallange. A video of Morgan layering mismatched clothing inspired countless others to do the same. It was meant to look like they had just stepped off a Gucci runway show. Rather than trying to stop the trend or ignoring it, the luxury brand jumped on board with it. They began reposting the best ‘fits’. That’s what the youth are calling clothes now, Daddio. They even cast a few of the creators in an ad campaign. They’ve continued to excel on the platform with 2.2M followers. They teamed up with potter Lisa Asano who made a vase emblazoned with the famous double G logo while wearing one of their suits. TikToker and trainspotter Francis Bourgeois became their ambassador for a collaboration with The North Face, the video has 321.4M views.

Fenty Beauty
The mononymous pop star Rihanna is disrupting the beauty industry again by launching a campaign exclusively on TikTok. The Fenty Face Contest is looking for the ultimate FBF (Fenty Beauty Fan). Asking fans to highlight why they should be the face of Fenty by showcasing their makeup products is a genius marketing move. In the first-ever nationwide competition for their 2023 campaign, potential ‘Fenty Faces’ are encouraged to follow the company on TikTok, post a video showing their favourite looks using the makeup range, use the hashtag TheNextFentyFace and tag the brand in the caption. It is an effective way to gain followers, adding to the 1.4M they already have, with 22.4M likes. It also raises brand awareness and increases engagement.
Scrub Daddy
Cleaning product company Scrub Daddy has been busy cleaning up on TikTok! The cheerful sponges have accumulated 2.3M followers! They produce silly, selfaware content poking fun at their funnyfaced scrubbers, racking up 48.8M likes in the process. The marketing team relied upon memes rather than product demonstrations, but they did work with budding cleaning influencers for that side of things without paying the price tag. Smaller brands and start-ups use TikTok’s Creator Marketplace, where businesses can discover up-and-coming creators in an arrangement that benefits both parties. It’s a sponsorship deal early on in the career of an influencer and an affordable one for the brand’s budget.
Marvel
Marvel Entertainment uses TikTok to promote its various formats, which include comic books, TV, film and animation. The Marvel universe is vast, and they ensure that their content covers everything from illustration tutorials to clips and trailers from upcoming movie releases. 4.5 million followers mean that they have fans, most probably all with different genre preferences. So, getting something out there for every fan to enjoy requires a multitude of themes. Marvel likes to give its fans extra insight into the franchise by showing behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with the stars of their movies, and videos focusing on highlighting the talent involved in creating the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe, in case you were wondering). She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is the latest TV show from Marvel Studios, so to engage fans and interest viewers, they uploaded two different types of videos to TikTok. One is footage of the cast messing around, and the other is a look at the She-Hulk version in Marvel Comics. Piquing the interest of fans of the character to invest in a peek at both genres.

The past month has seen an unprecedented scandal brewing in the world of professional chess, the very soul of the game said to be on the line as opinion is fiercely divided over the treatment of chess prodigy / shameless charlatan Hans Niemann.
On Sept. 4th, the San Francisco native beat Magnus Carlsen at the The Sinquefeld Cup tournament in St. Louis. At 31, Carlsen is one of the game’s most celebrated figures; a five time grand champion and currently the world’s top rated player by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). He was even the subject of his own 2016 documentary, Magnus.
Conversely, Niemann, at just 19 and said to be living out of a suitcase was the lowest rated player in the competition... which is why it was considered such an upset that he comfortably beat Carlsen, the more senior player publicly withdrawing from the tournament the following day amid cryptic suggestions of potential foul play. The chess community immediately piped up, with many, including American grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura alluding to Niemann having cheated. It wouldn’t be the

first time, the young player having admitted to previous deceptions, most recently at age 16 when he used computer assistance to compete in a ranked online competition at Chess. com. Dubbing it “the single biggest mistake of my life”, the teenager looked to put all talk of cheating behind him.
...the extremely clickbaitable suggestion being that Niemann used vibrating anal beads to receive messages of mathematically astute moves from AI software previously shown to surpass the abilities of even the best human player. Effectively a sort of M-arse code.
Now, thanks in part to the ever-constructive tweeting of world’s richest man Elon Musk, that’s exactly where suspicion lies, the extremely clickbaitable suggestion being Niemann used vibrating anal beads to receive messages of mathematically astute moves from AI software previously shown to surpass the abilities of even the best human player. Effectively a sort of M- arse code.
Whilst nothing was proven and Niemann continued in the tournament, passing grim-faced through lingering security wanding and radio fequency detection, live transmissions were
subsequently delayed by several minutes to eradicate the possibility of outside collusion in real time. Whether the result of retrospective investigations or evidence of public relations pressures, Chess.com have subsequently banned the teen from all of their events. He’s far from the first. Chess has a long history of foul play, embarrassingly at odds with its lofty intellectual trappings, but with Covid supercharging online tournament participation and prize money, it’s become especially difficult to effectively moderate competitors. Hundreds of thousands of accounts have been blocked like Niemann’s. Whilst many proclaim “once a cheater, always a cheater”, we may never know if Niemann really indulged in semi pawnographic means to ensure victory at St. Louis.
These guys on the other hand are bang to rights....

Having won the Tour de France an unprecedented seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005, a run which commenced just two years after he beat a testicular cancer which had spread to his lymph nodes, lungs, brain and abdomen, Lance Armstrong was hailed as an icon of the sport and human achievement at large.... Which is why it was particularly deflating to learn he’d spent years of his career not just taking performance enhancing drugs, but Lance strongarming team mates into the most “sophisticated, professionalized and
successful doping program” the sport has ever witnessed.
Before finally admitting the truth in 2013, on Oprah no less, it was Armstrong’s years of persistent denials, moralising and gaslighting of his many accusers which really left a bad taste in the mouth of fans. Whilst he received a lifetime ban and was stripped of his medals, the tens of millions he received in prize money and sponsorship muddies the waters of the old adage, “Cheaters never prosper”.
Whilst suspicions have lingered for years, the aftermath of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi saw Russia found guilty of running a state-sponsored doping program. The four year ban imposed by the World Anti-Doping Agency on all Russian athletes competing in international competitions was subsequently reduced by court arbitration in what many consider a weak ruling. For its part, Russia’s PR machine seems to have taken global criticism on board, attempting to bolster their international standing by committing a slew of war crimes in their invasion of Ukraine. Good old Russia.
Probably one of the most famous cheating moments in sports history, Diego Maradona’s so-called “Hand of God” saw England lose 2-1 to Argentina in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final. Though he quite clearly punched the ball into Peter Shilton’s net with an outstretched arm, officials apparently missed the deceit, awarding the goal. Although Argentina subsequently won the tournament, the vocal chagrin of the English team and its fans at least caused an overhaul in the refereeing of important sporting fixtures, stipulating that in future all officials have fucking EYES!!
Breaking more taboos than records... introducing the gold medal winning Spanish Basketball team at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games. Having won the top honours in the Intellectual Disability Basketball, the subsequent revelation that 10 of the 12-strong team had no disability and were not in fact tested accordingly by the Spanish Paralympic Committee (CPE) was an embarrassment for all involved. Revelations by one of the fraudulent competitors, undercover journalist Carlos Ribagorda, that the Spanish Federation of Sportspeople with Intellectually Disabilities (FEDDI) purposefully chose to sign up nondisabled people to gain medals and increase sponsorship reflected particularly badly on FEDDI president and (somewhat conveniently)
CPE vice-president Fernando Martin Vicente. His subsequent condemnation and swift resignation preceded the team’s disqualification and removal of their medals.
Wonder if there are basketball courts in hell?...

Irish lawyer Doireann O’Mahony has teamed up with ex- Ireland international footballer Stephen Carr to launch a charity raising awareness of sepsis, the so-called “silent killer” which is responsible for approximately 20% of hospital deaths in Ireland and a similar percentage worldwide.
Sepsis is a common and timedependent medical emergency that can affect anyone and can be triggered by just about any type of infection.
Sepsis is known as the ‘silent killer’ because its symptoms often mimic those of other illnesses. But the good news is that if it is identified and treated early, patients can and do recover.
Founder Doireann commented that the more people who know about sepsis, the safer everyone would be, and with that in mind, the charity’s principal aim would be to raise awareness.
The silenT
killer
Sepsis is a condition which occurs when infection damages the body’s own tissues and organs. The ensuing syndromic response all too frequently leads to fatalities.
52
Doireann initially met Stephen Carr in the summer of 2021 when each shared their experience of witnessing the devastation that can be caused by sepsis - Doireann who helps those affected through her legal work, and Stephen whose mother died suddenly in January 2018 due to the condition.
Both had a strong belief in the importance of raising public awareness of sepsis and its associated risks, as well as supporting those affected. Recognizing that there was no existing sepsis charity in the Republic of Ireland, they collectively decided to change that and the idea for the Irish Sepsis Foundation was born.
The Foundation is honoured to have Stephen as its Patron. Dublin-native Stephen had an illustrious career as a professional soccer player in the English Premier League. He was club captain at two Premier League clubs, and won trophies at both of those clubs. He was voted by his fellow professional players to the PFA Team of the Year. He was widely regarded as
the top right back in European football in the early part of this millennium. Having represented his country at all youth levels, Stephen played for the Republic of Ireland senior team in several qualification campaigns, including the memorable campaign that resulted in qualification for the
2002 World Cup. After retiring from playing, Stephen applied the same drive and dedication that brought him such accolades in the soccer world to achieve success in business . Raising his family in the south of Spain, Stephen’s successful business ventures have included the flourishing La Sala By The Sea beach club, bar, and restaurant and the rapidly expanding sustainable leisurewear brand One of One (oneofone.world) . Stephen is dedicated to spreading awareness about sepsis, and he is a treasured Patron of the Irish Sepsis Foundation.
The Irish Sepsis Foundation is a member of both the Global Sepsis Alliance and the European Sepsis Alliance. Find out more about its work at www.sepsisfoundation.ie
This condition is close to our hearts. We lost a valued member of SOCIETY MARBELLA Magazine team suddenly to sepsis in 2018. RIP KJ Elsdon

CBD
TLE a brand driven by Passion and Determination
The Leaf Elite have had an incredible journey navigating not only the endless legislation problems the cannabis community endures but also through the pressures of the sanctions enforced by the government throughout Covid. These restrictions caused numerous challenges in our industry and to many other business owners but through our passion and commitment we survived and continue to serve the local community.
We are advocates for CBD and the amazing benefits this plant gives us as a whole, not only as a health product but to the sustainability of the planet. We are committed to creating awareness of this previously forbidden plant’s attributes via our events such as the one we recently held at Miss Raw, where we infused the 3-course menu with CBD! Or that we hosted at TGB in Barcelona educating our audience alongside entertainment hosted by Leva B. This way the public then can understand there is nothing to fear and taste and feel the effects first hand. This all helps shift the stigma attached to cannabis! We realise there is need for change and we are implementing it now! More than ever before the public could benefit from the soothing attributes that his plant brings as well as cultivation practices supporting the reduction of CO2 Emissions which is growing ever more crucial!
Clare Navas is the founder of TLE, a CBD wellness company that offers a comprehensive range of CBD products and services alongside the first DNA Cannabis Scientific testing kit located in Marbella, she has recently launched Holistic Hemp Health HQ, a broad-spectrum CBD brand with 0% THC.

Launching Holistic Hemp Health HQ CBD Broad Spectrum 0% THC
In order to grow we needed to find the right partner and we were fortunate enough to be introduced to our new teammate in the summer. David Exieres who has been appointed as COO, brings with him experience in strategic development and distribution and has worked for 30 years within the cosmetic and retail industry. He has the foresight to take us to the international arena as he understands the challenges and obstacles that we need to resolve!.
Defining the cannabis community as an “opportunity to do God’s work” we have already launched our new range ‘Holistic Hemp Health HQ’ Broad Spectrum with 0% THC. This new brand is available to purchase online. We saw a need to create a brand which contained no THC to adhere to professionals needs who could not risk the problems associated with THC like athletes, or pilots for example. This also would work if someone had previously had adverse effects when using the plant. This is a great introduction to the CBD with all the compounds to help bring you into balance!
The World CBD Awards Barcelona 2022
We were invited to attend the CBD World Awards in Barcelona in October and I was privileged enough to meet with some of the greatest figures in our international community. These events are an opportunity to really feel the energy behind the CBD movement and discover who are the best people to collaborate with. Ramsey Douglas of the CBD World Awards explained how 60% of the companies that attended in 2019 have unfortunately folded due to the crisis and praised us for still being in the game! This award ceremony is held across the world to celebrate the CBD brands for the quality of their products, their services or their work they have done within the community. Not only that it has educational speakers too. David had the opportunity to embrace the cannabis sector in all its glory, a packed event evidencing that the interest in CBD is growing ever stronger. This is a great arena to be in at the moment and although it’s a complicated industry and not for the faint hearted, it is the land of opportunity with lots of fun to be had too!

Turning Properties into PROFIT with
Professional property management is just one of the services that Per and Jacob at Mojo Estates offer. Mojo Rentals will take care of everything; earning a hassle-free extra income from your holiday home has never been easier!
With over 20 million tourists flocking to the Costa del Sol annually the House of Mojo will help you benefit from sun seekers who may wish to rent your property; employing experienced rental agents is the key facet to this arm of the business. In a nutshell, you profit when you are not using your holiday home. In 2019 Per and Jacob realised that they were selling properties to certain clients which sat empty for most of the year and because they are client orientated, they concluded that empty properties could make money for their owners, turning a holiday home into an investment.
Property manager Cristina Palmero visits the properties to make sure they are optimised for prime rental income, ensuring everything is Mojoapproved. The agency will refurbish or redecorate if it is requested or if they think it is necessary. Cristina will ensure that the property is in good condition and up to
Mojo standards, keeping the guests happy and making sure that the owner receives the maximum return. Mojo always wants the best results for its clients and guests alike, they carefully select high-quality villas, apartments and houses in sought-after areas, utilising their knowledge and expertise of the Costa del Sol homes and locations.
One-stop agency Mojo 360º handles everything property-related from the start to the finish, including purchasing, as they also enjoy the benefit of in-house lawyers and accountants, through to the personalised services offered by the Mojo rental agents. One unique option for guests is a key pick-up and drop-off at a Málaga airport stand. That is just the start of the 360º experience provided by the Mojo team. Cleaning and maintenance are also part of all agreements, along with comprehensive marketing of the

property. It will be advertised on all of the main portals, such as Booking.com, Airbnb, and TripAdvisor, so the property will have a global audience. All of the marketing enjoys professional photos, as is the Mojo way. The software that they use means homeowners will have access to the calendar to see when their property is booked. The money side is also taken care of with a deposit and payment scheme, with no worries for the client. Mojo will even take care of the registration of guests with the local police, which is mandatory under the Tourism Law of Andalusia.

We are constantly bombarded by freshly-coined terms that define emerging trends and concepts, yet we are often ignorant of their real meaning. A “Designer villa” might sound sophisticated, but what does it actually mean? We talk to the development company, BRIGHT, to find out.
Article by Anastasia Sukhanova
What turns a normal
Home Couture 66
Home Couture 67
Design-led developments are at the core of BRIGHT’s philosophy, aimed at creating free-flowing living spaces that improve one’s quality of life. So, what elevates a normal luxury villa into a “designer villa”? We talk to BRIGHT’s Creative Director, Jason Harris, to find out more.
Design starts on the inside
The concept is holistic, and all design starts with the interiors. Function and furniture come first, it’s never an afterthought. Because of state-of-theart space optimization, designer villas feel bigger than huge mansions: they have no wasted space in hallways and corridors, and no walls where one would normally expect to find them.
Moreover, this makes it possible for them to be homes with open lines of communication between each space. This means that a family can enjoy being together while being involved in different activities, and the idea of a quiet home office that doesn’t feel completely detached from the rest of the house is totally possible.
Plot positioning and views
A designer villa is not just plopped on to any available plot of land. Its creators carefully consider plot elevation and orientation, general location, seasonal changes in natural lighting and lifestyle nuances of the local area. In a development that consists of several designer villas, the generosity of the individual plots and the carefully thoughtout orientation of each villa should ensure complete privacy.
All rooms in a designer villa are designed to take advantage of the available views. Where possible, a kitchen would enjoy the morning sun and the stove will be facing the view, and windows are placed strategically to allow the light to flood into each space during different times of the day. The bedrooms are given just as much attention. With glass walls that provide more than 180-degree views, integrated office areas and sitting zones, they are masterfully converted from traditional resting spaces into self-contained luxury suites, where you wouldn’t mind spending the entire day!

Little big details
the overall design concept is of prime importance, details, however small they might be, are just as vital in a designer villa. Like showers with built-in spaces for your bathroom goodies, kitchen surfaces that charge your iPhone, unnoticeable but ample storage spaces, glass walls that slide away at the touch of a button, and many other seemingly minor design elements that, in fact, change your life.
Bringing the outside inside
Buying a house is often a lifestyle choice, not just a location one. Whether it’s your holiday home or a permanent base, a designer villa is built taking into account the characteristics of the local climate, maximizing the opportunity of leading an outdoor lifestyle if the home happens to be somewhere warm. It makes extensive use of windows that slide away and favours open plan solutions. Whether it’s a quiet reading spot where you can dip your feet in the pool, a sitting area where one can observe the spectacular views as well as watch TV, a designer villa creates balance and harmony between the villa and its surroundings – and you often don’t have to choose between being outside or inside!
BRIGHT is currently developing the award-winning Vista Lago Residences, a community of 18 luxury, sustainable villas overlooking Marbella. Vista Lago is a design-led development, with visually stunning environments created to improve one’s quality of life. In that sense, a designer villa by BRIGHT is much more than luxury finishes, top brands and impressive architectural solutions. It is a space created to live slowly and tastefully, even if you can only do that for a few minutes each day. A designer villa will help you make most of those minutes, whether it’s with a stunning sunset view at the end of a long work day, or with a freshly picked orange from your organic kitchen garden. As the CEO of BRIGHT, Michael Rodziewicz, says, “home is a lot more than bricks and cement. It’s an experience.”

Design & Reality
The new UDesign showroom, will be more like a spectacular museum of contemporary interior design, where drawings, plans and computergenerated images take leave of the computer screen and become real and tangible, to be experienced with all the senses.
The new UDesign showroom in the San Pedro industrial estate might still be work in progress but it not only shows the high-end products and materials used by UDesign, but also shows how and why they are used, thanks to a team of professionals on hand - architects, designers and project managers - who can explain the UDesign philosophy and how it works in reality. And in this case, reality means just that: seeing the real deal and how it works in a real setting.
“It’s one thing,” says Jason, “to create photorealistic designs using CGI, and that’s what every developer does these days. Virtual 3D rendering has now reached an extraordinary level of excellence, but it’s still virtual. You don’t see and feel, or even smell, the actual furniture, fabrics, materials, textures and everything else that goes into a UDesign home. For that you need a showroom, and we are creating one that goes far beyond the basic concept of showing materials and products.”
The showroom location means that one does not decide to walk in off the street while passing by. If you go there, it’s to visit the place. Jason and his team considered making visits by appointment only, but rejected this option. The reason reveals the importance of the concept.
Home Couture
We talk to Jason Harris, Creative Director and CEO of UDesign, about their highly anticipated new showroom
82
“It’s not about volume of sales, and in any case, we recognise that many people simply cannot afford a topend designer home. It’s about showing people, whether clients or not, the key role creativity plays in designing, building and furnishing a home. It’s product knowledge, in the broadest sense of the word. It’s knowledge that architects, designers and project managers have, along with the realisation that money alone cannot buy great design. It takes people, and we have the right people, who know how to make the most of a product through good design.”
The showroom’s ground floor is divided into nine different zones, with a selection of lounge and dining areas and a bedroom area, all with very different lighting, styles and moods. One of the living room installations is based on the international award-winning Villa Alcuzcuz lounge, with some differences. There are some brand-new, cutting edge materials that you’ve probably never even heard of, like the extraordinary Genial Wall, which takes sound and image to completely new levels in a way that has to be seen to be believed. And also wallpapers and wall materials, fabrics, soft materials and a few quirky items, including sculptures and famous sculptural furniture pieces.
So having said all that, can you still simply drop in and buy a Edra sofa, for example? Well yes, you can, but maybe you don’t need a Edra sofa.
“The sofa you really want, without yet knowing it, may not exist,” says Jason. “Of course we have famous brand names on show, like Tom Dixon, Lee Broom, Haberdashery, Edra, Tecnografica, Catellani & Smith and others, but we’re not about brand names. We are the brand, and our brand is our concept. We use other brands as we see fit, but it’s all about how we make the most of these other brands. Some of them are not yet household names, such as Scarlet Splendour, whose products we saw and loved. It must be remembered that we have our own workshops with highly skilled carpenters and upholsterers who can realise our own designs to absolute perfection. So maybe the sofa you thought you wanted is not suitable for your specific space.”
Design is emotion. If it’s good, it talks to you, just as the new UDesign showroom
will do when you walk through its doors. The products on show and their creative and beautifully illuminated arrangements will certainly astound you, and a visit, for any reason, will be a rare pleasure. But that is not the principal reason for its existence.
“Our computer experts can make a 3D model of what you need, and our own workers can use that model to make the product in question. In a way, we’re a kind of mini-Bauhaus, except that we don’t teach. But perhaps we do something just as good in this new showroom: we make design real.”
The new showroom is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am till 6 pm.

TIME FOR ART
Last month saw the launch of contemporary Islamic artist Yousef Kafu’s collection of large-scale geometric artwork displayed at David Carpenter’s showroom in Marbella. A successful graphic designer from Libya, Yousef studied and worked in The Netherlands. After retiring, Yousef explored Traditional Islamic Art; using the geometrical concepts within Islamic ornaments to develop contemporary prints. A modern expression of Islamic culture, the artwork acts as a bridge between the past and the present. These designs exist as framed, backlit textile prints, archival pigment prints, and digital versions in the form of NFTs, offering unique and non-replicable proof of ownership. Spring 2023 will also see the release of an exclusive book, showcasing Yousef’s contribution to Islamic Culture.

TORQUE TALK 90
TORQUE TALK MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE TECHART 992 TURBO S 91
That said, apart from the tightly focused GT models, Porsche’s offerings are also designed to appeal to a broad audience, so the base car always has enough bandwidth for tweaking with performance upgrades.
On that score the TechArt-tuned 992 generation Turbo S you see here is intended to slot somewhere between a stock Turbo S and the 991.2 GT2 RS in both appearance and driving dynamics.
Some consider the relatively stealthy appearance of the stock 992 Turbo S to be a distinct advantage compared to the ‘look at me’ wow factor of its eyeball-grabbing Italian rivals. However, some others who appreciate the Porsche’s performance and reliability would also like a bit more visual assertiveness added to the mix.
TechArt’s Powerkit, alloy wheels, suspension, and aero kit upgrade path gives owners a menu of modifications to add speed while retaining stealth or simply more visual presence without a performance increase. Most customers will go for both, but the choice is yours.
Back in the 1970s and ’80s, it was no surprise that tuned engines often produced fewer emissions than stock, as the tuning process made them more efficient. However, things have changed, and increasingly stringent emission controls mean that getting an engine upgrade certified is one of the biggest hurdles for any tuner.
The latest cars with their closed-loop emissions systems incorporating catalytic converters, particulate filters, and various electronic control systems are very hard to tweak within the rigorous certification process.
Unlike 30 years ago, you can’t just pull off the cylinder heads and gain significant horsepower from porting, polishing, balancing the combustion chambers, and then adding headers and higher lift, longer duration camshafts.
These days you have to be an electronics expert to download and decipher the factory ECU (electronic control unit) programming that controls not just the engine and gearbox but also all the other systems tied into either a CAN-bus electronic control network or a FlexRay high-speed information system linked with the CAN-bus. Once you have interpreted that information, you have to ensure that the new parameters you are introducing to optimize the ignition, fuelling, and turbo boost work properly with the gearbox ECU and handshake with all the other ECUs in the car to avoid fault codes and the dreaded “limphome” mode.
TORQUE TALK
EVERY PORSCHE IS DEVELOPED TO BE DYNAMICALLY OPTIMISED TO ITS DESIGN BRIEF. THAT MAKES THE WORK ALL THE MORE DIFFICULT FOR AFTERMARKET TUNERS SINCE THE INTRINSIC BALANCE OF THE STANDARD VEHICLE IS SO FINELY HONED BY A TEAM OF ENGINEERS WHO ARE REAL CAR AND DRIVING ENTHUSIASTS.
92
TORQUE TALK 93
Too much power is often just enough for most 911 Turbos buyers. In this case, TechArt’s Techtonic Powerkit TA092/ T1.1 software is a definite must-have that ramps the 992 Turbo S’ power up from the already impressive 640 to 710hp at 6,500 rpm, with torque rising commensurately from 800 to 900Nm between 2,900 and 5,200 rpm.
WHILE POWER GIVES YOU TOP SPEED, IT IS TORQUE THAT DELIVERS ACCELERATION.
The extra 100Nm of twist delivered to the tarmac via the 4WD system and larger rubber prompts the tuned Turbo S to scorch to 100km/h in 2.6 sec, with 160km/h and 200km/h passed in 5.4 and 8.1 sec respectively. Top speed is 330km/h.
As with all of TechArt’s Stage 1 ECU upgrades that do not require uprated turbochargers, this conversion uses an additional “plug and play” module between the engine and factory ECU to intercept and modify the information flow to enhance power and torque. To protect the engine from thermal overload, its module disengages at the factory set maxi- mum permissible operating temperature and initiates the OE power-limiting cool-down protocols. Power mode automatically disengages if slippery driving conditions are detected or the driver manually chooses ‘Wet’ mode.
In Normal mode, the car runs totally off the factory ECU’s basic program. With fuel economy numbers unchanged from stock, TechArt is not required to provide any additional emissions testing. The performance module only comes online when you select the Sport or Sport Plus modes, which also engages the bypass valves of the TechArt sports exhaust.
Due to EU and Swiss drive-by noise limits, many tuners now offer an EU/Swiss conforming sports exhaust and a louder one for track-only use or for places like the U.S. and Middle East, where the authorities are more relaxed about decibel levels. Meeting EU/Swiss noise limits does not mean an exhaust system cannot be inspiring. The engineers can still play with frequencies to achieve a meatier tune to the ears in both Normal and Sport modes.
Things are not that straightforward though, and there is always the danger of introducing unpleasant resonances at particular engine revs, a very annoying arti- fact if it coincides with a common motorway cruising speed. Developing a sports exhaust that will be loved by both
customers and the testing authorities is thus a fine balance of engineering experience, expertise, and lots of experimentation. The TechArt 992 Turbo S produces a deeper, more satisfying exhaust note in normal driving, while in Sport mode under full throttle, amplified in a nearby tunnel, the soundtrack turned into some- thing more akin to a 1980s-era turbocharged Porsche race car at Le Mans.
On the road, the TechArt-spec springs that lower the Turbo S’ ride height by 40 mm to deliver a more purposeful stance, less body roll in bends, and sharper handling. You notice this the moment you reach a stretch of twisty road and up the ante. Turn-in is even crisper and cornering flatter, with the reduced roll angle giving you even more confidence as you lean on the increased level of mechanical grip.
TORQUE TALK
94
If you drive a stock 992 Turbo S, a new 992 GT3, and the 710hp TechArt Turbo S down the same twisty road, you will come away with the impression that the tuned car sits somewhere between the factory cars in its chassis responses but withthe all-wheel-drive advantage to help lay down its enhanced rocket shiplike propulsion. Ultimately, the TechArt car delivers what is broadly akin to what you might expect of an all-wheel drive 2018 991.2 GT2 RS, albeit without the
more visceral seat-of-the-pants chassis responses of the 700hp rear-wheel-drive street-legal track-day car with its racestyle suspension and solid bushings.
As the TechArt staff finished cleaning our test Turbo S I drove from their base to our photo location, I mentally tallied the number of new components on the car that would have undergone the rigorous TÜV testing process (see: “Built to a High Standard” sidebar). I counted
eight: the aero kit, with its carbon-fibre trim, comprising a new front apron, side skirts, rear central diffuser, carbon-fibre aero lid, rear spoiler, side air intakes, and door mirrors. Then there were the forged alloy wheels sized 9.5J x 20-inch in front and 12.0J x 21-inch at the rear, which are homologated for 265/35ZR20 and 325/30ZR21 Michelin Cup 2 tires.
TORQUE TALK
95
Apart from assessing the strength and ability of wheels to absorb road impacts without fracturing, the TÜV testing process ensures that the wheels and tires clear the arches and wheel housings under all possible dynamic situations, both separately and when used in conjunction with TechArt’s lowering springs. Of course, there are some exemptions. In the cabin, the TechArt sports steering wheel does not require certification as its core is the OE Porsche wheel.
TechArt’s marketing chief, Marc Herdtle, explained that all TechArt components are also certified for sale in Switzerland. Although that country has draconian speed limits, ironically, some of the standards they set for aerodynamic parts are even stricter than Germany! Put all this together, and you can see why a fully TÜV-certified car from a top-level tuner like TechArt costs a lot.
The work that goes into the design, development, testing, and certification of all the bespoke components is not inconsiderable, and these costs have to be recouped through sales before the company even begins to make a profit.
These processes are largely unknown to the enthusiasts who buy TechArt’s tuning parts and the passers-by who asked us about the 992 Turbo S during our photo shoot. The latter mostly commented on the lower, wider stance and the aerodynamic aids that help give this car its purposeful demeanour. So while driving a stock Porsche almost guarantees you invisibility around Porsche’s hometown.
The TechArt Turbo S’ extra power and torque are something to write home about since it turns an already fast car into one worthy of its more aggressive appearance.
Nail the throttle on the autobahn and this car really picks up its skirts and flies, the lower ride height and aero adding to the feeling of hunkering down at speed.
I also cannot overstate the advantage the standard rear-axle steering gives to the agility of the tuned Turbo S on twisting country roads and its stability at high speed. Add to this the extra mechanical grip conferred by the wider rubber, and you soon develop a feeling of near invincibility.
TORQUE TALK
96
THANKS TO ITS REFINEMENT AND PRACTICALITY, THE STOCK 992 TURBO S IS A CONSUMMATE ALL-ROUNDER AND DAILY DRIVER. HOWEVER, THIS VERY DEPTH AND BREADTH OF ABILITIES MIGHT ACTUALLY MAKE IT A BIT TOO POLISHED FOR SOME HARD-CORE ENTHUSIASTS WHO WANT MORE FOCUS ON THE LEVEL OF ONE OF PORSCHE’S GT MODELS. TECHART’S TAKE ON THE MIGHTY TURBO S DEFTLY BRIDGES THE GAP BETWEEN THE REFINED STANDARD CAR AND A MORE FOCUSED GT PORSCHE.

Since before World War 2, the Social Security Administration (SSA) of America has kept a database of baby names, the de facto result of the birth certificate and social security application process completed by parents of newborn children. This database is analysed by statisticians who track the rises and falls in popularity of baby names. Anything in the top 1000 is considered to be popular. Outside that coveted elite, your name is probably something like Ian and you suck. Mine’s exactly like Ian. It’s Ian.... I suck.
Whilst there are several faves which hover around the top of the charts year in and year out (your Emma’s, Charlottes, Williams and Liams...), driven in large part by social media trends, others peak and wane alongside the public profiles of celebrities or pop culture characters. A few years ago, Khaleesi became a by-word for a strong, tenacious, independent, fair, warrior queen as a result of Game Of Thrones’ popular character. The hundreds of parents who proudly named their offspring after her might have clenched up a little when she eventually went completely batshit, indiscriminately burning buildings to the ground and killing innocents by the dozen.
The Death of KAREN
By Ian Greenland
Amongst the Chads, Beckys and Felicias whose mega-memed mockery has seen them consigned to the scrapheap of popularity in the pandemic era (“Bye Felicia”), the biggest hit has to have been taken by Karen. Once the third most popular name in the US, albeit in the 60s, the 2020 SSA list saw the already declining choice plummet 167 places to #828. Just 329 babies or 0.019% of female births in the US got Karenned.
Just 329 babies or 0.019% of female births in the US got Karenned.
The Karen haircut was swiftly identified; a blonde inverted bob or “lob”, long in the front, short in the back - a sharp, angular affair appropriately emblematic of the abrasively rude and cocksure attitude of its owner.
It’s unsurprising given the whipping the name has received online of late. Initially becoming shorthand for a “basic” middle aged white woman with an inherent and sometimes extrovert sense of entitlement, as videos of “Karens” misbehaving in public kept going viral, the negative connotations compounding to the point that Karen developed into a mainstream tropeKarens losing their shit in restaurants, on public transport, in queues in Starbucks, at sports events.... Perhaps exacerbated by the heightened stressors of the pandemic era, 2020 saw rampant and widespread Karenning and its documentation become a ubiquitous feature of the social media landscape. #KarensGoneWild.
Whilst some would argue its reductive insensitivity and at least 329 little girls will soon join the throng of Karens adjusting to life with a lightning rod as a moniker, the phenomenon of calling out Karens online, like so much in the memesphere, has raised a million knowing smiles whilst drawing attention to contentious behaviours and archaic attitudes we’d do well to eradicate.
Several “Coughing Karens” caught on camera having meltdowns when asked to mask up in stores or eateries highlighted the battle lines drawn between pro and anti maskers and vaxxers at the height of the pandemic. The Karen stereotype is not one troubled by the rigours of mainstream scientific consensus. She knows best and God help you if you suggest otherwise.
Perhaps the most famous and rightly vilified “Karen” was the Central Park Karen, Amy Cooper, whose deeply unsettling call to the police was calmly videotaped by her supposed assailant,
98
a polite bird watcher who’d asked her to put her dog on a lead, according to park rules. As Cooper drums herself into a near-hysterical fervour during the 911 call in which she repeatedly highlights her alleged aggressor’s African American status, all the while throttling her increasingly panicky dog, now on a short leash, the world got another queasy look at America’s problems with systemic racism and white privilige. The fact the Central Park incident occurred the same day as George Floyd’s murder in Minneapolis make it all the more resonant as a puzzle piece of the BLM movement. Myriad other videos exist of public altercations where incensed Karens belie their entrenched, perceived racial superiority, collated online as
a testament to the deep divisions America and the wider west is now reckoning with.
Although more recent SSA data is currently unavailable (can someone please have a word
with the manager?!), given its 2020 poor performance in the list and its subsequent and prolonged online pummelling, one has to assume Karen is no longer a staple of the hallowed 1000. Perhaps 2022 marks the first year no newborn babies begin life as Karen? It was probably getting on a bit anyway right?.... Or is it all a bit ridiculous? Have TikTok and Instagram unjustly ruined the reputation of a perfectly pleasant name? Perhaps new parents will ignore the hate and go with their hearts?
Well it’s hardly Adolf, but it seems it’s probably still too easy a target when so many other names are available which haven’t run afoul of the Game of Memes.
It would take a hell of an inspiring Karen to course correct now and bring it back into anything resembling public favour. A strong, tenacious, independent, fair, warrior quee....
...oh shit!
Bye Karen.
The Karen stereotype is not one troubled by the rigours of mainstream scientific consensus. She knows best and God help you if you suggest otherwise.

Bettina, our resident foodie, offers her insider knowledge on plant based cuisine and takes us on a culinary journey as she travels the world in search of gastronomic inspiration.
Pink Fir Apple is an unusual variety and a very delicious one too. This easy to grow second early potato is extremely productive, with huge harvests of up to 40-45 or more evenly sized tubers from each plant.
hese lovely potatoes have an unusual elongated shape with pink skins and tender creamy yellow flesh and a nutty flavour. Their waxy texture remains firm during cooking, making them a perfect choice for potato salad, but also great for boiling and chipping. There is absolutely no need to peel them unless you are using them for mash. I have gone for a recipe here that makes them shine in all of their glory.
I have a favourite crisp flavor and that has always been sour cream and onion crisps. Perhaps it’s the onion flavor and slight acidity that is so good or just the saltiness and tang! I love pink fir potatoes, they roast up beautifully. And to another nod to my childhood, I have made this recipe for a sour cream and onion dip/topping, a healthier version of one that we used to dip crisps into!
This is a great dish to put in the middle of the table at a dinner, they are so moreish, I’d be surprised if there are any left by the end of dinner. And if there are, you can easily chop up any leftovers and add to a curry or soup.

Makes 4 servings as a side
INGREDIENTS:
650g pink fir potatoes 30ml olive oil generous pinch of salt
For the Sour Cream and Onion: 100g oat creme fraiche
1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp nutritional yeast pinch of salt
For the Topping: 1 tbsp chives, finely chopped 1 tbsp red onion, finely sliced in half moons
METHOD:
• Preheat the oven to 200ºC.
• Wash the potatoes well and slice them in half horizontally.
• Coat the potatoes with olive oil and salt by adding to a bowl and tossing until covered. Then spread them out on a baking tray lined with baking paper.
• Put in the oven for 45 minutes until golden and crispy.
• Meanwhile make the creme fraiche by mixing the oat creme fraiche, onion powder, nutritional yeast and salt. Set aside in the fridge until the potatoes are ready.
• Remove the potatoes from the oven and either transfer to a nice serving platter, or serve them in the baking tray. Top each potato with a dollop of sour cream, then sprinkle with chives and red onion, and enjoy!
Another one of my all-time favourites is Sweet Potatoes… I love them! They are super-versatile, tasty, filling and – last but not least – super-tasty.
INGREDIENTS
2 large sweet potatoes
2 tablespoons Quick Plant Cream
60 g (2 oz) sweet corn
1⁄2 red (bell) pepper, finely diced
1/4 red onion, finely diced
1 lime, cut into wedges coriander (cilantro) leaves
1 avocado, peeled, pitted and sliced
1 tablespoon finely chopped chilli salt and freshly cracked black pepper
METHOD:
• Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°/Gas 6) and line a baking (cookie) sheet with baking parchment.
• Cut the sweet potatoes in half (to cook quicker) and lay them on the prepared baking sheet. Cook for 30 minutes or until soft.
• Once roasted, scoop out the inside and mash with the plant cream, sweet corn, pepper, red onion and a squeeze of lime. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Spoon back into the skins. Top with a quarter of the avocado on each half, a few coriander leaves and a sprinkling of chilli for kick.
Veganism can be both very exciting and easy. I have three books to choose from - the 7 Day Vegan Challenge being the one that fits the ‘how to go vegan bill’ the best. All of the books are available on AMAZON.
