PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Storms, torrential rain, hazy drizzle and brilliant sunshine… We’ve had

it all this month and I think it’s safe to say that normal life has finally resumed in Marbella and the insanity of summer is over (until next year!!!) But whilst the tourists and heat have departed, business shows no sign of slowing down and it’s been another busy month as new restaurants, bars and entertainment venues have been springing up and keeping us occupied and diverted all month. San Pedro is fast becoming a new Mecca for food aficionados and revellers alike, and there is no doubt that the boulevard has brought a new energy and vitality to the town as it’s rapidly becoming the place to see and be seen – for adults and children alike! Head down the road towards the San Pedro Paseo and, only a block in, you’ll

stumble across not one but TWO brand new, stylish eateries; Km0 – a delightful café where food is fresh, organic and produce has been locally sourced, and Urban Café – a chic and sophisticated contemporary bistro, where cocktails, snooker and trendy food are the order of the day (or night!). The girls in the office have got ‘Bond Fever’ and, between swooning over our cover star Daniel Craig and admiring the latest Bond Girls, they’ve had glitz and glamour on their minds so we’ve been heading to all the glitziest parties and checking out the most glamorous fashion trends. Of course, Bond has been as popular with the guys in the office as much as with the girls and Ian Kuah has reviewed James Bond’s awesome Aston Martin DB10 – and as far as cars go, they don’t get much cooler than that.

Society Marbella published and produced by: PUBLISHER Andy Clark CREATIVE DIRECTOR Constanza Mtz. SENIOR DESIGNER Alma Roda Ros

In an attempt to get Bond Girl bodies, the girls have turned to our new health and fitness columnist, Luke Christopher Hill, whose Miss Fit Bootcamp is the latest craze to be taking the coast by storm as he shapes up ladies of all shapes and sizes with fun, energetic beach workouts. Talking of fitness, we speak to Dorian Yates, 6 times Mr Olympia and one of the biggest names in bodybuilding history. He met up with SOCIETY to discuss his new ‘supergym’ DY Gym, opening soon right here in Centro Plaza, Puerto Banús.

FEATURES EDITOR Natalie Rose Kern

Whilst fashion, fitness and fun have kept us all busy this month, we’ve also made time for some charity gigs as well. The Last Chance Animal Recue Charity held its calendar launch party and we were delighted to help out such a worthy cause – and our intrepid explorer Natalie Rose Kern has been raising money for Positively Pink Costa del Sol - and she fills us in on her latest adventures!

CONTRIBUTORS

Of course we’re packed with all the usual reviews and features and this issue is brimming with decadence and a distinctively 007 danger.

It’s been great fun to compile and even more fun living the Bond lifestyle… but I’ll leave you to enjoy it now for yourselves!

Celebrity Spotlight

Our cover star, Daniel Craig, is back as Bond for the fourth and final time.

LICENCE to

THRILL By Natalie Rose Kern

Celebrity Spotlight

The idea of regretting not doing this seemed insane to me. Sitting in the corner at a bar at age 60, saying: ‘I could’ve been Bond. Buy me a drink.’ That’s the saddest place I could be. At least when I’m 60 I can say: ‘I was Bond. Now buy me a drink.’

H

e was the first ever blonde Bond and critics said it would never work but, almost ten years on and four Bond movies down the line, Daniel Craig is synonymous with Ian Fleming’s British Secret Service agent superspy and it’s hard to imagine anyone else filling his shoes. And yet, as this month celebrates the ten-year anniversary of the muchanticipated announcement of Daniel Craig as the new 007 - we welcome Spectre, Craig’s final Bond movie and we bid a sad farewell to the blonde but brutal bombshell, who has epitomised the quintessential British hero for almost a decade, and has singlehandedly made him relevant to the 21st century. As Daniel Craig takes his licence to kill, picks up his Walther PPK and prepares to do business on behalf of Her

Majesty’s Secret Service for the fourth and final time in Spectre, it’s amusing to recall the outcry that first greeted the announcement in 2005 that the relatively unknown actor was to be the new Bond. I can remember the public reaction as if it were yesterday; it was shock, horror and disbelief as popular opinion was overwhelmingly in favour of Clive Owen acquiring the role. Craig wasn’t the tall, dark and handsome image of Bond to which viewers had become accustomed and the Daily Mirror ran a critical front page news story on Craig, with the headline, “The Name’s Bland – James Bland,” while Internet groups (including one named “Bond’s not Blond”) threatened to boycott the film. Public opinion was proved massively wrong when Casino Royale went on to be the highest grossing Bond movie to date (although Skyfall in 2012 was an

19

even bigger hit!). Craig brought a sense of real danger and action back to the 007 films, winning him rave reviews. Not to mention the scene that saw Daniel coming out of the sea in a pair of tight shorts that helped cement his place in female fantasties everywhere. The critic Raymond Mortimer once described 007 as “what every man would like to be, and what every woman would like between her sheets” and that scene proved it. Born in Chester, but growing up in Liverpool, Craig moved to London when he was just sixteen years old to join the National Youth Theatre. He graduated from the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and began his career on stage. Early on-screen appearances included Elizabeth, The Power of One and A Kid in King Arthur’s Court, as well as the British films Love Is the Devil, The Trench and Some Voices where he attracted the industry’s attention, leading to roles in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Road to Perdition, Layer Cake and Munich.

“What every man would like to be, and what every woman would like between her sheets” -Raymond Mortimer Craig has always been ambivalent about the morality of 007: “The question I keep asking myself while playing the role is, ‘Am I the good guy or just a bad guy who works for the good side?’ Bond’s role, after all, is that of an assassin when you come down to it. I have never played a role in which someone’s dark side shouldn’t be explored.” Craig also says that his favorite previous Bond actor was Sean Connery, but says, “I’d never copy somebody else. I would never do an impression of anybody else or try and improve on what they did. That would be a pointless exercise for me”. For his part, Connery thinks that Craig is “fantastic, marvelous in the part.” When he was told that Craig had taken particular note of his performances, Connery said that he was “flattered” and that Craig really gets the “danger element” to Bond’s character. Casino Royale came at a time when Craig was already enjoying success in smaller movies. “What’s extraordinary,” he says about the decision to take on the role of 007, “is that at a point in my career when I was enjoying making

“I’m definitely not satisfied about my career. I don’t know how you can be; it’s movies and working with wonderful directors and just getting a big kick out of it, I was given this opportunity to do something for which I had no benchmark, no experience whatsoever. I threw myself into it full bore and it was a success. But I’m not quite sure how. Except that we had a good script; and I committed to it; and we had a good cast; and [director] Martin Campbell did a pretty good job on that film whichever way you look at it.” If you expected Craig to be ultra competitive and ready for confrontation in public, you’ll be disappointed “I’m one of the least competitive people you’ll ever meet. Except with myself. If I’m in restaurants, there’s often guys there saying ‘Oh, f***in ‘ell James Bond.’ Whatever. You need to impress me, outwit me, compete with me? Go ahead, knock yourself out, I have no problem with that at all. I played a lot of sports when I was a kid and I don’t think I was particularly competitive, but the games I loved best were when I forgot completely to be competitive and that’s when I won.” Craig married the highly intelligent and stunningly beautiful Rachel Weisz in a secret ceremony in New York. The lack of press for his wedding underlined Craig’s well-publicised hatred of doing the whole PR promotional tour junkets and the importance he attaches to his private and personal life and you’ll rarely read anything about his teenage daughter from a previous relationship. “I didn’t get into this business to become famous. At the back of my head, there was probably always an idea, ‘God, I’d love to be a movie star.’ But honestly, I come from Liverpool. I thought there would be fat chance of that happening. I just wanted to be an actor and do my thing, and this has happened.”

BABES It’s one of the ultimate roles in the movies. There’s nothing that equals being chosen to be a ‘Bond Girl’ and those actresses lucky enough to be chosen for the role are often remembered more for their escapades with 007 than any other character in their acting career. Here are some of the most memorable girls who were lucky enough to spend time with Mr Bond!

SOCIETY’S

TOP 10

MAJOR ANYA AMASOVA

Barbara Bach The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) Mrs Ringo Starr may have been an American girl, but in the mid-1970s no more exotic a woman appeared on screen than her KGB spook (codename Agent XXX). Equally at home fighting in the Sahara as rolling in the sheets, she was the Bond-girl response to women’s liberation and in every respect 007’s first modern equal.

Britt Ekland The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)

MISS MARY GOODNIGHT I don’t have to answer to you, a trained assassin, for what I am.

OCTOPUSSY Maud Adams Octopussy 1983

22

Britt Ekland wearing little more than a bikini for most of the movie, made The Man with the Golden Gun one of the best Bond movies of the 70s.

PUSSY GALORE Honor Blackman Goldfinger (1964)

VESPER LYND Eva Green Casino Royale (2006) Vesper embodied all the traits that characterize 007’s most memorable minxes — the smarts of Pussy Galore, the drive of Melina Havelock, the sobriety of Anya Amasova, and the, umm… jewels of Tiffany Case. An instant classic, who met a watery end.

MELINA HAVELOCK Carole Bouquet For Your Eyes Only (1981)

DO YOU WANT TO PLAY EASY, OR THE HARD WAY

I’m the money

Oh, I’ll always be a jinx to you...

‘JINX’ JOHNSON Halle Berry Die Another Day (2002) It might not have been Bond’s finest hour (invisible Aston Martins anyone?) but Die Another Day did feature Halle Berry coming out of the waves in a tongue in check homage to Ursula. And the fact that it was shot just down the road in Cadiz (which stood in for Havana) makes it even better!

I put a black widow spider underneath his mosquito net... a female, they’re the worst. it took him a whole week to die...

HONEY RYDER

Ursula Andress Dr. No (1962)

The first truly was the best.

The Swiss native’s voice may have been completely dubbed over in postproduction, but, well, the goods were all hers. Her sultry walk out of the waves set the tone for every sexy-strong Bond girl who followed and led a generation of men to dream about lying down “underneath the mango tree.”

23

If keeping a secret is the ket to being a good spy then I think I’d make an excellent secret agent.

LUCIA SCIARRA

The gorgeous Monica Bellucci makes her Bond girl debut in Spectre at the age of 51, and looks good enough to put many wannabes half her age to shame. The iconic Italian actress plays Lucia Sciarra – a Mafioso femme fatale widowed by 007, who seduces Bond in the movie. She had only the highest praise for her leading man, with whom she gets up close and very personal, “Daniel is so generous as an actor and a man, so I was never uncomfortable. When you have to do intimate scenes with someone, it’s so important for the chemistry to be there – because then it becomes more like a tango”. Bellucci’s role required her to be filmed in a

24

Monica Bellucci Spectre (2015)

sexy corset, and the mother-of-two, (with French actor Vincent Cassel, who she separated from in 2013), admitted to making a few lifestyle changes to prepare for the role. “I’m not someone who wakes up at 6am to go to the gym,” she said, “So I just didn’t eat pasta for a few days before we started shooting – and that was about it. Because the truth is that I like cakes and pasta, the odd glass of wine and a very occasional cigarette. My advice is: eat well, drink well, have good sex – and laugh a lot. The rest comes all on its own.” It’s the kind of exercise regime that we can highly recommend!

“I like a man who can respect a woman” MADELEINE SWANN Léa Seydoux Spectre (2015)

If YOU DON’T LEAVE NOW, WE’LL DIE TOGETHER, MR... BOND. JAMES BOND.

French actress Léa Seydoux plays the part of Madeleine Swann in Spectre. Born in Paris she grew up between France and Senegal, where her mother still lives, and her parents counted Lou Reed and Mick Jagger as friends. A self confessed shy child, Léa decided to take some theatre courses which led her to audition for a few film roles. Seydoux got her break in 2013 when she starred in the Bafta Award-winning French lesbian romance film Blue is the Warmest Colour, which made headlines thanks to an explicit seven-minute sex scene. Léa has a strong work ethic “I am about life. I surround myself with beautiful things. I work hard to have a better life. This job helps me achieve that through the people I meet. I’m lucky – not to have been a cover girl –

but to have been able to meet all these people, to live these adventures and travel so comfortably. But despite that, it’s still difficult. Nothing comes easily. Everything I‘ve earned is down to me, and no one else”. Léa’s English language roles began with a very small part in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and as the lovely Gabrielle, the antiques dealer, in Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. She also appeared in M:I Ghost Protocol with Tom Cruise and Benoit Jacquot’s historic drama Farewell, My Queen alongside Diane Kruger. When she was offered a Bond film, Seydoux says, “I thought, ‘Right, I really have to go for it – work on my English accent, do some sport, get fit.’” Her work on Spectre, she says, involved “a few stunts, nothing crazy – but still, you have to be up to it.”

Aston Martin DB10

LEGEND

James Bond’s DB10 hints at next year’s all-new production Aston Martin By our Motoring Editor, Ian Kuah

movie after Dr. No and From Russia With Love. Aston Martin had also moved on, and with 007 behind the wheel of the then new DB5, a motoring legend was born.

It was not always this way. If you have read Ian Fleming’s original 1950s James Bond novels, Royal Navy Reserve Commander James Bond drove a Bentley and wore a Rolex rather than the Omega later seen on the big screen. But by the time Goldfinger was penned in 1959, Fleming’s hero was driving an Aston Martin DB3.

Over the years, the iconic DB5, UK registration BMT 216A, has appeared sporadically, even in films where other cars like the BMW Z3 and Z8, Lotus Esprit Turbo and Ford Mustang have taken the lead car role. For Bond, the DB5 has been like the loyal wife, always waiting in the wings for her husband to tire of his latest mistress and return home. Or perhaps like Eve Moneypenny?

In 1964, Harry Saltzman and Albert ‘Cubby’ Broccoli presented Goldfinger, Eon Productions third James Bond 007

This year is the 50th Anniversary of Aston Martin’s association with the James Bond franchise, and Spectre, the 24th

Bond movie, will have its world premier in London on 26th October. Although Aston Martin did not exhibit at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year, they held a small event in a nearby hotel to showcase the DB10 and the DB9 GT Bond Edition, which is sure to be come a collector’s item, especially as all 150 of these £165,000 special cars are already spoken for. Outside, a beautifully restored DB5, belonging to Frankfurt-based businessman, and lifelong 007 fan, Steffen Appel, also attracted a lot of attention. Steffen had been invited to some of the location filming for Spectre and enthusiastically related his adventures on set, and his passion for the 007 films and

interior takes its styling cues from the DB10, especially its steering wheel and instrument pack.

Spectre is particularly significant for Aston Martin as rather than simply providing current models as they have done in the past, they elected to design and build a bespoke one-off model just for the film.

Aston Martin has been lauded for its beautiful designs but also criticised for its ageing technology, and engines that are less than state-of-the-art in efficiency. All this will change with the debut of the new models, which will be based

on a new platform and powered by a bespoke version of the AMG-sourced 4.0-litre twin-turbo M178 V8 engine that debuted in the AMG GT last year. Aston Martin CEO, Andy Palmer, told us that apart from the new twin-turbo engine we can expect three new Aston Martin models to arrive in the coming months. This is very good news indeed.

Known as the DB10, this futuristic looking Aston is Bond’s latest car from Q Branch, and goes head-to-head in a car chase with the villain, Mr. Hinx, who drives a Jaguar C-X75. This spectacular car chase sequence took place in Rome at night, with the authorities obligingly closing off a whole area for the filming. This is the first time ever that two working concept cars have been used in a Bond movie, and Aston Martin hand built 10 copies of the DB10 at their Gaydon factory. The majority of these were stunt cars equipped with roll cages for the action scenes. While the Vantage-based DB10 will never see the light of day as a production car, it is no secret that some of its styling features will reappear on the DB11 that makes its debut in 2016. As Aston Martin design chief Marek Reichman explained, “The DB10 sits between the Vantage and DB9 in size and proportions, with shorter overhangs and tauter lines than the latter. The iconic grille shape is lower and wider than current Aston Martins, and together with a new headlight design, gives this concept car its squatter, more aggressive look. In the cabin, you are greeted by a sleeker, more minimalist architecture than used by the present models. The bulky centre console is gone, replaced by a much slimmer, more modern design. Marek hinted that the DB11

Natterings

Well hello there and welcome to my little world! Expect a little silliness, a touch of controversy, a dash of humour, a splash of fun and a sprinkling of magic!

By Natalie Rose Kern

O

ctober was Breast Cancer Awareness month and as such, the girls in the SOCIETY office all got involved in fundraising schemes and projects, attending all kinds of charity events from cake sales to manicure parties. Never one to be outdone, I decided to embark upon a mission of my own and joined forces with some friends who were planning to climb the majestic La Concha Mountain in aid of Positively Pink Breast Cancer Screening. I’ve climbed La Concha before, many moons ago when I was as fit as a fiddle … but let’s just say that this year’s endless food reviews, the incessant eating out, ‘business lunches’ and complete lack of exercise have taken their toll on my body and my fitness, so the six-hour hike up a mountain seemed like a daunting but exciting challenge. I downloaded my

sponsorship form and began hastily seeking out sponsors in order to ensure that I couldn’t renege or chicken out at the last minute.

To further instil in me the desire to climb, I dedicated my Natterings to the feat and had the design all laid out: there would be beautiful shots of La Concha, images of the breathtaking views from the summit, a team photo of us all in our pink attire on top of the mountain and, of course, a selfie from the peak with the caption “I made it!” Naturally I intended to tie the whole adventure in with our James Bond theme as I was going to be embarking upon a Bond Girl crusade with the title “The World is not Enough” It was brilliant. A flawless plan. Charitable and heroic, as well as a riveting read complemented by superb landscape images. Flawless. Or so I thought. The date was set and all I had to do was climb the mountain with my trusty camera, snap away like a pap and then write up the whole ordeal. Life in the SOCIETY office sped by as usual – parties and outings, reviews and interviews, writing, writing, more writing… “Where’s Natterings?” my publisher kept asking me. “It’s all in my head!” I reassured him, “I just need to climb the mountain and it will be done.”

28

What I hadn’t banked on was the weather! Oh, October, October, October! What a wet, wild and wonderful month in Marbella. The thirsty gardens, plants and trees have been blessed with a much-needed drink after this summer’s scorching heat and the bleak and sunburnt countryside is once again green, lush and verdant. October’s downpours meant that my garden was fresh, alive and thriving and I loved everything about it… except that I had a mountain to climb!

On the morning of the hike the rain was torrential. Howling wind was sending my washing flying about the terrace, and when I went out to retrieve it my heart sank, “Where was La Concha?” The statuesque mountain that looms proudly over the whole of Marbella had disappeared. Uh oh! The clouds were so thick that neither its summit nor outline could be observed. This did not

bode well. Within minutes both my phone and computer were beeping like mad as members of the climbing party began sending frantic messages back and forth at lightning speed. Within an hour the climb was off. We rescheduled for the following Sunday, so all was well - except that I would be on a tight deadline, because SOCIETY would go to print on Monday morning. “Where’s Natterings?” my publisher asked me once again. “Rain checked. We’re climbing next week instead. I’ll climb in the morning and write in the evening. It’s fine. It’s all in my head!” I told him proudly. But pride comes before a fall, and fate (and my luck!) being what it is, I awoke the following Sunday to even worse weather conditions than the previous week. Once again the messages came thick and fast (for by now there were approximately 60 of us on this mammoth expedition!)

“I HAVE TO CLIMB!” I told them “I just have to!” But my pleas fell on deaf ears, as everyone seemed to care far more for their lives than for my Natterings.

see more forlorn dogs with sad expressions begging to be saved from an untimely death than I do my friends’ incessant photographs of their new babies (and that’s saying something!) …and yet, every day I scroll on past. Someone else can save them but not me.

At this point in the story I would love to tell you that I braved the elements and heroically climbed the mountain solo. In the rain. And wind. And reached the summit for this feature. And believe me, I was tempted! But common sense prevailed; not mine, but that of my trusted friends who convinced me that to climb in this storm would be a suicide mission adding, “even you’re not THAT foolish!” So it’s Sunday evening. The storm is raging outside my window and I’m snuggled up in bed with my laptop… and no story. My email pings and I know what’s coming next; “Where’s Natterings?”

The morning after the event I logged on to Facebook and the first image I saw was a tiny bundle of newborn kittens. They’d been abandoned, had no mother and were in need of a home. A dog, I couldn’t quite manage whilst juggling my heavy work schedule and my unruly child… but a cat? Surely I could manage a cat. If not me, then who? How could I preach compassion and shout out to the world to adopt whilst doing nothing myself. The monkey had long been begging me for a kitten, so this was our time. We arranged to meet the kittens the very next day and I told my little boy he could select the one of his choice. They were tiny – only as big as my hand. Beautiful little faces and tiny bodies. I was smitten.

I want to tell him that it’s in my head, but it’s not. My mind has gone blank and we print in 12 hours. Rain and writer’s block… I’m writing about rain and writer’s block with writer’s block in the rain. Oh dear. This will be a riveting read.

I think I’ll be collecting my P45 in the morning. I stare blankly at the screen and attempt to write as the kittens climb uncontrollably over the keyboard and dangle from my hair. Kittens! I’ve not yet mentioned the kittens! Which is quite remarkable because the only thing that has been occupying my mind--and my month--as much as this blasted mountain climb, are these furry bundles of mischief that have been sending me quite mad. I’ve never been one of those crazy cat ladies (Crazy, yes. Cats, no!) until now! I don’t know quite how it happened but from one day to the next I became a ‘Crazy Cat Lady’. I think it began at the Last Chance Animal Rescue Calendar launch party earlier on this month, although I didn’t realise it at the time. The event was a glitzy, charity affair, with raffles, prizes, gorgeous gowns and scintillating socialites. I was attending on behalf of SOCIETY and it was just another night’s work until the speeches began and then something changed. I hadn’t actually pondered what the Last Chance Rescue was all about until Kara Robertson explained the charity’s purpose and its mission. I had presumed that this one was much like the many other shelters that are home to hundreds of abandoned or unwanted animals up and down this stretch of the coast, but Last Chance really is the animals’ LAST CHANCE.

The monkey took to his knees and crawled about playing with them and two little black and white brothers played back, clinging to his clothing and rolling about in his hands. He looked at me crestfallen and asked, “But which one should I take, Mummy?” I gazed down at the kittens and knew I couldn’t take one without the other…and so we popped the tiny feline creatures into a box and didn’t look back.

They are rescued from KILLING STATIONS where more and more dogs are being killed daily because the shelters are overcrowded and the number of unwanted or abandoned animals is rising dramatically. I don’t know if it was Kara’s passion for this cause, or the founder, Jacqui Ross’ determination, kind nature and hard work, but by the time the speeches were through there wasn’t a dry eye in the room and even the burliest of men were dabbing the corner of their eyes with a napkin. I was destroyed. How could people

continue to buy pets from breeders and pet shops when there were beautiful, gentle animals being killed every day because no one wants them? I left the event with a heavy heart and a desire to tell the world to STOP! STOP BUYING FROM BREEDERS! STOP BUYING FROM PET STORES. RESCUE! SHELTER! ADOPT! FOSTER! Save an animal’s life today! The situation is dire. If you have Facebook, no doubt your newsfeed is littered with helpless animals in desperate search of a home. I know mine is. On a daily basis I

Yes, they’re mischievous and perhaps they’re a handful (they’ve already broken two of my chargers by dangling on the wires and gnawing at them!) but they are homed. In our home. And they won’t be seeing the inside of a shelter or a killing station. Ok, they’re not dogs… but it’s a start. I saw a photo today of a dog in a shelter and the caption read “If

you buy a dog from a breeder you are killing me.” I know everyone wants a cute, designer pooch that they can fit in their handbag, but if you are tempted in any way to buy a dog, then I implore you to visit a shelter first and perhaps save a life.

The climb has been rescheduled AGAIN. So, if I’m still in a job by next month, you can finally read up on my mountain hike – and I might even have a full-blown petting zoo by then! Natterings is over and out for this month so I’ll be back to Die Another Day! I made it - and even got my Bond movie title in there in the end!

Been a big fan of Phoria since their song ‘Red’. This track doesn’t stick to any rules of song making and the results are great. The ending is unexpected but also really puts in a euphoric state of mind. Check this one out!

Audien - Rooms (Progressive House)

This guy is a genius when it comes to melodic anthems. He really makes songs that take you to another level. We recommend anything that this guy makes.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

MR. OLYMPIA COMES TO MARBELLA By Natalie Rose Kern

British-born, Dorian Yates has won the Mr. Olympia title six consecutive times since 1992. He holds the fourth-highest number of Mr. Olympia awards of all time, ranking behind bodybuilding legends, Ronnie Coleman, Lee Haney and Arnold Schwarzenegger respectively - so they don’t get much bigger (pun intended!) than him, and he is widely considered one of the top athletes in modern bodybuilding history.

I

’m reading up on the formidable Dorian Yates in anticipation of our interview and yet, as his silhouette appears in the doorframe and he approaches, I am humbled by his size and stature. Nicknamed ‘The Shadow’ on account of his tendency to appear unexpectedly at major bodybuilding contests and win, despite having remained out of the public eye for long periods beforehand, Yates reportedly avoids interviews, television publicity and has even turned down a great deal of supplement endorsement contracts and media opportunities in order to retain his privacy, as he places great value on his personal life, so I am thrilled that he has agreed to take some time to speak with me.

that it was time for her too to call time on her successful bodybuilding career, and so they retired (for a short while!) to sunny Marbella, home of beautiful people and sunny smiles.

The statuesque physique of a man is accompanied by his stunning wife, Gal Ferreira Yates, a formidable figure in her own right, and an outstanding vision of smooth tanned skin, brawn and muscle. The couple has come to meet me in Centro Plaza, where their new gym is under construction. Wearing matching royal blue muscle hugging, fitted DY T-shirts; they are the embodiment of fitness… I feel fat.

Dorian originates from Birmingham, England and Gal is from Brazil; they met during their competing careers and were determined to settle somewhere that met both of their needs. They fell in love with Marbella, as everyone does, for its sunshine, beaches, cosmopolitan community and positive vibe.

We order green tea and as we peruse the menu, I can see that this couple is not only passionate about working out, but about healthy eating and healthy living.

They love the weather and the outdoorsy kind of lifestyle that Marbella affords. “We’ve always trained at Plaza Gym,“ Dorian tells me, “So when it came up for sale, I knew that this was an opportunity I couldn’t miss.”

“That’s my objective” Dorian tells me, “It’s not just going to be your run-of–the-mill gym, it will be a place where you can change your body, your diet, your regime… and your way of life!” Dorian and Gal have been back and forward between the UK and Marbella for many years and have always harboured a soft spot for this part of Southern Spain. Dorian has retired from the competition world and Gal recently decided

34

It wasn’t long though before Dorian realised that there was something missing in the market – a place for people who care about their fitness, their health and their bodies to come together: a gym that offered more than the machines and the overpriced memberships and would deliver more than a twenty-minute workout twice a week. This would be a gym where you could train, build, grow, enjoy, laugh, reinvigorate, workout, play, enjoy, eat, socialise and live… The

kind of gym that you go to – BECAUSE YOU WANT TO and not because you have to.

“It makes you feel good!” exclaims Dorian, “and it makes you want to feel good.”

There’s something about Centro Plaza that makes it feel like home. It’s a busy, bustling hive of activity. It’s the centre and meeting point for most Marbella or Puerto Banús-based expats, and whether it’s yummy mummies out to lunch or breakfasting businessmen, you know you’ll always run into someone that you know and there’s a great energy and liveliness about this commercial centre.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

...It will be a place where you can change your body, your diet, your regime… and your way of life!

DY Gym is going to be at the heart of that bustle and commotion. The original gym has been expanded, stripped out, and is being rebuilt into a super gym. A weightlifting, running, spinning, yoga-ing, body-rocking haven for like-minded, health-conscious Marbellís to work out, reenergize, relax and unwind. Not only will there be the finest equipment available, (Dorian has sourced and handpicked all the freeweights and machines from all over the globe to ensure that he has the best equipment on the market) but there will also be a full cross-fit gym, a studio for classes, a spinning area, therapy and massage rooms, and a restaurant and café serving fresh, healthy and nutritious food, juices, smoothies and shakes. DY Gym will be quite unlike anywhere else in Marbella. It will offer a complete lifestyle rather than a mere gym. “It’s going to be a place where you go to feel good. There will always be qualified trainers on hand, a wide range of classes ranging from upbeat aerobics to relaxing yoga, the most modern equipment to train with and a great and positive, fun and friendly atmosphere. On Friday nights Beachgrooves Radio will be coming direct from the gym from 7 to 11pm and it’s set to be a funky, fresh and fashionable approach to gyming.”

We take a tour of the vast gymnasium, where giant murals of Dorian have been painted from floor to ceiling and I cannot help but be in awe of the size and striking likeness. The builders are working around the clock to get the gym open over the coming month and Dorian and Gal are excitedly busy with getting this super gym off to a flying start. From kitting out the gym’s new café to employing the most capable

and proficient trainers on the coast, they aren’t cutting any corners. As we meander around the extensive space and Dorian points out the various areas, explaining the design and layout of the new structure, I can envisage the new gymnasium, and despite my aversion to exercise it seems like a place that could whip me into shape and where I might actually enjoy working out. “Don’t worry about that,” Dorian reassures me, “You’re going to love it. We’ll get you into shape in no time and you’ll be here all the time.” I don’t know whether it’s his size and imposing demeanor, or his passion and obvious excitement about this project, but I can well believe him and am actually looking forward to getting into the gym and changing my lifestyle. Wonders will never cease! DY GYM, Centro Plaza, Nueva Andalucía

Train Like a

BEAST Look like a

Luke Hill, Owner and Head Coach at Miss Fit Marbella the women’s only Boot Camp and Personal Training provider.

Beauty

This year a study found that 63% of men would rather date a girl who trained or lifted weights. For the first time in years, it seems that it’s fashionable to flaunt the beautiful, womanly hourglass figure. After what seems like decades of seeing stick thin, shapeless models and celebrities sprawled across our televisions, newspapers and magazines; I for one am delighted that the well overdue pendulum has swung…

T

he likes of Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez and Kelly Brooke are just some of the voluptuous household female favourites that both men and women have adored over the past decade but perhaps it has taken the Kardashian Empire or fitness fever in social media to finally cement and pave the way for women to desire gorgeous curves and healthy, strong bodies. BUT, ladies, it is NOT EASY! To get these stunning figures and to look like a beauty, you must train like a beast. As a personal trainer and owner of a women’s only boot camp, the question I get asked more than any other is: “But if I train too hard or lift weights won´t I get too bulky, won’t I look like a bodybuilder?” My reply is always the same: ”NO!” Unless you are lifting heavy weights for a few reps at a time and constantly overloading your body, you will not increase muscle size, become bulky or look like a bodybuilder! Genetically speaking, women have low levels of testosterone and it would be very, very

38

”STRONG IS THE NEW SKINNY” hard to put on muscular size and get bigger through lifting weights. I would suggest that 95% of my women have the same two goals; fat loss in those stubborn areas and toning up. So, what would I recommend? Train smart, train hard and apply the principles of training to our sessions to reach the goals we have set. Remember, fitness isn’t an unknown quantity. It is a secret we already have the answers to. It is a science and we can all reach our goals if we train correctly. We just need the education. Many people believe (and I hear it almost every day) that low intensity, steady-state cardio such as going jogging, cycling or jumping on the cross trainer for 30 minutes is the key to the aforementioned weight loss and toning. Scientists and researchers have time and time again dismissed that this is an effective way to lose weight but the word is still not out!

Do not get me wrong, cardio has its place and is great for increasing our cardiovascular fitness and aerobic capacity but it also has its disadvantages. For one, despite low intensity steadystate cardio being branded as the Fat Burning Zone (Approximately 50-60% of your Maximum Heart Rate) and a training method sustainable for long periods of time; the average person would only burn between 300-600 calories per hour! Therefore it would take many hours of steady-state low intensity cardio to burn off what we typically eat in a day. In addition to this, low intensity cardio has been found to not only deplete fat stores (slowly) but it also leads to a depletion of muscle and strength. Therefore, you may start to lose your body shape and those, oh so wanted and desired, womanly curves.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

So, I hear you ask, there must be a much more efficient and effective way of burning calories? And this is where I introduce to you… ”Resistance Training” (otherwise known as ‘Strength’ or ‘Weight’ Training) The mythical creature that makes everyone who does it; bulky and muscular right? Wrong!.

I recommend a combination of all of the above but perhaps more importantly, I am a strong believer that every session should have an aspect of Resistance Training in it. I would never take a session without my trusty companion, Mr Resistance. So what exactly are the benefits of Resistance Training? Not only will it increase your strength and anaerobic endurance, allowing you to work harder for longer; it has been scientifically proven to be much more effective at burning fat than our old friend, steady-paced continuous cardio and it builds lean muscle. (This is what gives our bodies shape and in short, lean muscle increases our metabolism, resulting in more efficient weight loss!). A recent study from the University of Alabama found that women who followed ´Resistance Training´ 3 times a week increased the amount of calories burned in normal daily activity (in addition to those burned during exercise). By performing resistance training at 8090% of your maximum heart rate (that is, training like a BEAST) our bodies find it hard to keep up with the oxygen intake needed by our muscles. The result, an oxygen debt. This debt has to be paid back and your body continues to burn calories whilst doing so. This has been phrased as the ¨AfterBurn Effect”.

by performing resistance based exercises whilst working at a high intensity, your body will burn more calories, will get

Quite simply,

An Australian study into women performing high intensity resistance training showed that they lost an incredible 6 times more body fat compared to that of a similar group of women performing low intensity steady state cardio. If you weren’t already packing your gym bag and about to head out the door to start ´Resistance training´, you will now! Especially when I tell you that an additional benefit of training like a beast and working at 80-90% of your maximum heart rate (the anaerobic zone – without oxygen) is that it helps promote lean muscle growth and allows us to tone up!

Adriana Lima by Inez & Vinoodh for Vogue Magazine

Resistance Training comes in many forms; the one that often springs to mind first and may be the reason behind our fear of training like a beast… free weights! However, resistance training can also include, resistance bands, weight machines or simply using your own body weight.

Let me just clarify this one more time as it sounds too good to be true! ´Resistance Training´ will help you burn fat and tone up at the same time! So, there it is, time to ditch the running machine and replace it with some weights as ´Training like a Beast really will make you look like a Beauty!´

BENEFITS OF RESISTANCE TRAINING * Weight loss * Increase in number of calories burned during and after exercising * Increase in lean muscle * Strengthens bones and joints

* Increase in body mechanics and functionality * Increase in energy levels * Decrease in number of injuries and disease prevention

hen men and women are in the chronic stages of alcoholism it can often feel that there is no solution, no light at the end of the tunnel and no way out. It is a mind altering, organ destroying, crippling, debilitating disease that not only affects those afflicted but everyone around them. Wifes, husbands, children, employers, friends and family… It destroys

everything it touches and tears relationships and families apart. For so many years alcoholism has been misunderstood, “lack of will power” they called it, “an inability to handle one’s liquor” they laughed, “a selfish and self-destructive habit” they conceded. Even the medical profession has failed to comprehend the sheer desperation and despair that it inflicts on its sufferers and their absolute inability to do anything about

it, no matter how much it affects their family, their livelihood or their life. It seemed that whilst cancer was a ‘real disease’, alcoholism was banished to the shameful and humiliating ‘addict’ connotation that meant that whilst it was a deadly and fatal disease, it deserved little attention, support or relief.

The HC Marbella International Hospital has set up a programme to combat alcoholism, based on the detoxification and rehabilitation of patients who suffer from alcohol addiction, together with psychological support to obtain the best results. “We have a success rate of up to 70 per cent, depending on the circumstances of the patients”, says Dr. Carlos Triay, a highly-qualified specialist in General Medicine. The anti-alcoholism treatment that HC Clinic offers is based on the

Detoxification is the part of the treatment that protects the patients from the physical complications of abstinence, but it does not change their behaviour or psychological problems. “During this process, which can last between 5 and 7 days, patients are closely monitored by medical staff 24 hours a day” explains Dr. Triay, “because the treatment may include the need for medication to be administered”. After the detoxification process has been completed the patients move on to the rehabilitation phase, with psychiatric and psychological support to deal with their psychological issues, their social habits and their self-esteem, in order to avoid any chance of them falling back into addiction in the future. “This treatment involves behavioural cognitive therapy and motivational interventions, which may be in family

sessions, individual sessions or in groups”, says this specialist. He adds that at the same time, “we also evaluate other psychiatric illnesses such as depression, anxiety and personality disorders, and we will begin a treatment of medication in accordance with the diagnosis of each patient, if necessary”, he also stresses that patients must have a strong motivation to overcome their addiction. The Costa del Sol is renowned for its party lifestyle and its wild gregarious way of life – which means that the coast is awash with people suffering from alcoholism and most of them feel like there is no way out and no escape. Our resident health and nutrition expert, Bettina gives us some top tips on how to eat healthily on a budget Photo: Raphael Tecksten

on a Budget

HEALTHY EATING One of the most common remarks I hear (on an almost daily basis!) is “Going organic or moving towards a healthier diet is so expensive and we simply can’t afford it” I get it. I understand where you’re coming from…But it’s simply not true.

Here’s the deal - moving towards a healthier diet and way of eating doesn’t have to cost and arm and a leg. It certainly doesn’t have to involve a bunch of expensive ‘super foods’ and powders that, in the end, only gather dust in your cupboards.

Over the years I have learnt a trick or two and, with some smart moves, eating healthily might even save you a few pennies. To start with, I thought I’d share some of my top tips on easy ways to eat healthily without breaking the bank!

MAKE YOUR OWN MILK!

bigger quantities. In the Marbella area check out La Campana, the Marbella poligono and as far as Malaga industrial area for companies that sell in bulk.

We are surrounded by amazing produce and farmers who take great pride in their craft. Every weekend there is an organic market on the Costa Del Sol - so make the effort and go and buy what is in season. Most often it will also be the most reasonably priced produce. If you buy a larger amount of say tomatoes, make a sauce and freeze. Strawberry season? Freeze and use for smoothies. You get the gist.

Nut milk can be expensive to buy fresh (or impossible, if you don’t have anywhere locally that buys and sells their own). Even the long life variety in cartons and cans is expensive and often contains nasty additives and preservatives. Making your own is a far cheaper option. Coconut milk can be cheap to make, and of the nut and seed varieties almond, cashew and sunflower seed are usually the most economical. BUY IN BULK! Nuts, seeds and specialised flours are usually expensive when bought in small amounts. Find a wholeseller that sells in

44

EAT MORE VEGGIES! Eating more vegetables is not only good for your health, it’s great for your wallet too. Look for in-season vegetables that will be cheaper than buying imported vegetables and/or vegetables not in season (and they will taste better too!) BUY SEASONAL, LOCAL AND PREFERABLY ORGANIC! We are so, so very lucky to live in the garden of Europe.

USE DRY BEANS AND PULSES! -INSTEAD OF USING CANNED VARIETIES. You’ll need to soak and cook them first, but the flavour is far superior and you’ll end up with more, which will last longer.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

WHERE I LOVE TO EAT? My most memorable Healthy Meal out this month was Tomate Fresco’s Oat Pancakes! Drizzled with maple and sliced bananas.

Turn these into bean casseroles, salads, soups, stews or bean dips or accompaniments to meals. I actually like to bulk boil two to three different varieties and freeze in portion sizes so that I always have pulses at hand. COOK MEALS IN BULK - AND FREEZE SMALL PORTIONS. That way if you get home late from work and can’t be bothered to cook, you’ll have a meal ready to go rather than having to get a takeaway. Great when you also have hungry kids that want food “NOW”.

If you are looking to eat healthy on a budget Tomate, in San Pedro de Alcántara, is a great option. Lots of juices (Mean Green is my personal favourite) salads with gluten free options and much more!

KEEP THINGS SIMPLE Don’t go overboard with toppings, extra ingredients or crazy specialised ingredients in the health shops. I know that the pretty packaging and health promises are tempting BUT you can make some really delicious meals with only a few basic ingredients. I go through many of these practical tips on my monthly workshops. Eating healthily is easy when you know how!

SQUEAKY

CLEAN

Secrets

SKINCARE

Winter is officially around the corner, and not only does that mean its time to start doing your christmas shopping (if you’re an early bird, like myself!) it also means that its time to change things up in your beauty regime if you want to stay on trend and on top of your skins health this winter.

Everyone’s skin starts to suffer a little bit in the run up to winter, the cold air and wind are the main culprits when it comes to dry skin so in order to achieve a flawless finish when applying your make-up, the most important thing is to start with a good canvas.

When the skin is dry it has a sponge-like effect when foundation is applied over the top, it sucks all of the product into the dry, cracked areas and it will leave you with an uneven, patchy finish, which is never a good look - especially on slightly more mature skin.

Here are some of my favourite tips and products to use throughout the winter and keep your skin smooth and fresh.

EXFOLIATE!

CLEANSE!

Face: Face & Body: To keep your skin looking fresh and healthy, you’re supposed to exfoliate your skin two to three times a week. Any less and you get a build-up of dead skin cells, which causes uneven, dry skin texture, and any more it can cause your skin to panic and breakout or strip your skin of its natural oils and in turn, make it more dry. My favourite exfoliator for face and body is this one from Lush Cosmetics: Cup O’ Coffee This is one of Lush Cosmetics’ fresh masks, they’re completely vegan and so fresh that they actua-lly go out of date after a certain amount of weeks. The thing I love about this particular mask is that you can use it over your whole body and leave it on for ten to fifteen minutes and then wet your hands or a flannel and start scrubbing! Its perfect to use in the morning just on your face to wake you up as the ingredients are really invigorating and it has a delicious, rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee. This product is €9,95 and you can order it on the lush website: lush.co.uk

46

If your skin is seriously dry, it would probably be beneficial for you to change your cleansers up in the winter months to something a bit more creamy like a cleansing milk, as opposed to something astringent like a clear gel cleanser. A particular cleansing milk that I find works really well for severe dryness and is completely natural and VERY affordable is the Lait démaquillant hydratant fraîcheur intense from the ‘Nectar of Nature’ range. You can find it in Carrefour Supermarket for €3.05, what a bargain!!! Body:

I personally have always had quite sensitive skin so I have to be relatively careful with what I’m putting on it. Shower gels, in particular, seem to irritate my skin a lot so I recently thought I’d try using the JOHNSON’S baby moisture wash with shea & cocoa butter and it’s been going down such a treat with my skin! This is a great product for all year round and the whole family can use it so it is definitely one of my major must haves.

SOCIETY’s editorial assistant and professional makeup artist Jess Miles lets us in on her top tips when it comes to beating the winter blues with makeup and skincare.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

HYDRATE! Face: I always seem to find a standard moisturiser just doesn’t do the trick throughout winter so I tend to reach more for serums and oils. I have quite oily skin so serums used to be quite daunting, until I found out about this little bottle of amazingness that is the Medik8 CTetra Vitamin C Antioxidant Serum. The only way I can describe this is a ‘dry

oil’, you can apply it in the morning before your make-up without it leaving any sort of shine on your face but it still hydrates your skin enough for it to be beneficial. It has a really lovely fresh orange smell from the Vitamin C and you only need a small amount for it to be enough for your whole face and neck.

Body: When I’m shopping for body moisturisers, it’s the scents that really grab me and make me want to buy something. It’s only recently that I’ve found out about this brand and I’m SO glad that I have! Rituals body butters have the most amazing scents I’ve ever had the pleasure of smelling in my whole life. My favourite is this ‘Touch of Happiness, Sweet Orange and Cedar Wood’ scent as it’s a really yummy smell but still smells clean and fresh, Rituals have loads of different combinations to choose from and it is literally impossible to leave the shop without buying something! I recently found out that they also do candles - which was fabulous news for me as I love the aroma of their body lotions so much; Now I can have the scent forever wafting around my bedroom too! Its not too pricey either at €15.50

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Autumnal Beauty As the skies turn to dark grey again, my taste in lips, eyes and nails also gets darker. Personally, there is nothing I love more than a deep berry manicure and lipstick to go with my favourite knitted scarves and jumpers whilst cosying up with a nice warm drink at this time of the year!

NAILS

There are two trends I’ve been loving at the minute: obviously the classic matte plum colour has to be one of them as it’s so classy and gives a regular mani a nice twist, and my second favourite is ‘shattered glass’ nails, which is a really simple nail art design but is very effective. Matte nails are still at the height of fashion and this is the perfect time of the year to embrace them as matte looks the best on darker tones; deep plums, midnight blues and liquorice blacks for example.

EYES and FACE I am a serial eyeshadow hoarder and have millions of palettes, I cant leave a make-up shop without picking one up! But ‘Nude Dude’ is definitely my current favourite. I’m loving The Balm Cosmetics products at the minute, even though some of the items are a little more on the pricey side for a drugstore brand its worth it for the quality. The berry tones in this palette are perfect for all eye colours and look stunning with a nude lip. Also, the little complimentary brush you get with this palette is the perfect size and shape for an ‘on-the-go’ brow brush! Another must have from The Balm Cosmetics is this bronzer/blush ‘Balm Desert’ Myself and bronzers have a very love/hate relationship, I always find they’re either too orange or too shimmery but this one is just the right tone and shade and perfect for giving you a subtle glow once your summer tan has started to fade.

48

LIPS My must have lipstick for this time of the year is ‘Crushed Plum’ by Bobbi Brown. It is a deep purple colour with a brown undertone, the texture is smooth and creamy and it stays put for the whole day. I’ve been wearing this lipstick for years and wouldn’t dream of ever using anything different. A trick to keep it on for longer is to prep your lips with a liner all over first and then after you’ve applied the lipstick, blot it gently with a piece of tissue and voila! I think this colour looks amazing with a cream or white knitted jumper and instantly dresses a comfy outfit up, you cant go wrong!

Essie’s ‘Sole Mate’ is one of my favourites. The brush is lovely and thin so you can get a really nice clean finish around the cuticles, plus it also has very good staying power. The only bad thing about this colour in particular is that you need to use quite a few coats to get a full coverage. Complete your mani with a coat of Essie’s ‘Matte About You’ matte top coat for a stunning velvet finish. The ‘broken glass’ nail effect can be achieved simply using these three basics: a nail polish of your choice for a background, some iridescent nail art foil and a top coat. All you have to do is paint 1 or 2 coats of polish on your nails (depending on how deep you want the background to be) and then randomly dot a few small slices of the iridescent nail foil on your nails, trying to leave a small gap in between each slice so as not to layer them as this makes the ‘broken glass’ effect look more realistic. Once you have done this, just seal the finished look with a top coat and there you have it! A manageable nail art look that should take hours, done in minutes!

BANISH ‘BAD HAIR DAYS’…

After

By Natalie Rose Kern

The revolutionary new treatment OLAPLEX has arrived in Marbella!

I

’ve come to Wood salon to try out this groundbreaking, innovative treatment, which Zoe guarantees will change my world. As a full-time working single mother my hair is generally a wild and untamed mess, as I rarely manage more grooming than dragging a comb through my savage locks when I run out the door each morning. And if that weren’t bad enough, the scorching sun has taken its toll this summer, so my tousled mane of hair is fried and frazzled. Zoe is always very honest in her approach to my hair and unlike many hairdressers who will dye, style and blow-dry straw-like hair, condition is paramount to Zoe and she works hard to keep her clients’ hair healthy, shiny and in tip-top condition, rather than damaging it with excessive styling and colouring. Until recently, Zoe would always say, “you should have it cut!” – which was not very popular with ladies with longer hair, but now she can repair even the most frazzled locks and restore them to their former glory with Olaplex. This sensational new hair hero is turning

the concept of hair repair on its head. I am dubious. Surely this ‘wonder treatment’ can’t actually repair hair as damaged as mine? But Zoe assures me that the results are astonishing… and if Zoe says so then I know it must be incredible. Olaplex is the first insalon treatment to reconnect broken disulphide bonds in the hair shaft. These bonds break when we use heat, colour, swim and generally mistreat our hair, which leads to breakage, split ends and dryness. The result is hair that looks dull with crispy ends and exacerbated frizziness. Olaplex actually rebuilds the broken bonds, preventing split ends and chemical damage from occurring in the first place. Kim Kardashian was able to go from brunette to blonde and back again without compromising her hair’s condition thanks to Olaplex - and Gwyneth Paltrow has been able to grow her bleach-blonde hair, whilst Jennifer Lopez can change her hair frequently and still maintain her thick, healthylooking locks. Zoe says, “I am extremely excited by this fantastic new product, because whenever I colour hair, my first thought is ‘Will it damage the condition?’ as at Wood we are all about healthy, shiny hair. Well, now I can bleach, highlight and tint hair and not create any damage by adding Olaplex to the colour. It’s brilliant! And totally revolutionary in colouring and conditioning hair” I don’t colour my hair so Zoe suggests a stand alone reconstructing treatment of Olaplex, which takes no longer than 30 minutes to do in the salon and costs only 45.00 euros, leaving hair feeling stronger, healthier and with a fantastic shine. My hair is washed, (which includes one of Wood’s sensational head massages!) the treatment is applied, left on for ten minutes, washed off and another lotion or magic potion is applied, left on and finally rinsed – and that’s it. I can’t feel or see the difference yet as my hair is wet but Zoe assures me that as the hair begins to dry I will be transformed, and she wasn’t lying.

50

OLAPLEX actually rebuilds the broken bonds, preventing split ends and chemical damage from occurring in the first place. As she blow-dries my hair the shine is outstanding. I run my hand through my hair and it feels like silk – but twice as thick as the hair I entered with. Gorgeous, shiny ropes of silk. I love it and can’t stop playing with it and throwing my head about like I’m in a shampoo commercial. Zoe explains to me that the hair just keeps getting better and better with every treatment and she recommends using Olaplex once a month, or when having a colour, as she adds Olaplex into the bleach/tint to prevent damage. She still recommends a trim every 6-8 weeks to put strength back into the ends and using a hydrating shampoo, conditioner and mask at home, for sun dehydrated hair, but the hair’s condition is guaranteed to improve with Olaplex. “Previously,” Zoe adds, “we could only re-moisturise but not repair the actual structure of the hair shaft.” And yet, repair my hair she has! I leave the salon with a smile on my face and a bounce in my hair and feel remarkably glamorous for me. This is the ultimate treatment for anyone with damaged hair - and anyone who wants to strengthen and improve the texture of their locks. If Olaplex can transform even hippy hair like mine, this miracle treatment will banish bad hair days… Forever!

Daniel Boardman, Senior Hair Technician at Reflections Hair, Nails and Skincare Salon in Marbella, trained under the multi-award-winning Errol Douglas MBE. Daniel cut his teeth working on shoots for the likes of Cosmo and Elle, while his Fashion Week experience gave him the skills to tackle any hair type or problem.

LONDON CALLING This month Daniel talks about the Hair Highlights from London Fashion Week SS16

Well nothing, and I mean NOTHING was left out this season. Designers opted for a multitude of different hair looks, which was fab to see - I mean seriously who wants to be a sheep nowadays? I spotted effortless-looking ponytails, sleek off centre partings, out-of-pool hair, enchanting multi-braided hairstyles and clown-like wigs, (welcome back Mr Pugh, you never fail to disappoint.) You name it - fashion week worked it. Here are a few of my favourite looks from LFW. House of Holland

ONCE UPON A TIME Love was definitely in the air during fashion week, as designers took inspiration from fairytales and rom-com heroines. Whimsical soft, feminine up-dos and beautifully undone styles led the way - a trend everyone can ace with ease. Stylist, Anthony Turner for Erdem created airy styles designed to

almost float as models walked. Those with shorter hair were given extensions, whilst models with thicker hair had

sections plaited and pinned underneath the lengths to create a thinner appearance. Very wearable. At House of Holland the hair was matt in texture and worn loose. To create a similar look, spray hair with Redken Fashion Waves 07, Sea Salt Spray, â‚Ź16,88, to add a lived-in, gritty texture. Next, create waves with tongs, staying tight against the ears and neck. Shake out to finish the look.

Erdem

A NATURAL AFFAIR Luminous-looking hair with lived-in movement is the look every girl lusts after and London designers showed their own versions of this popular style. The Duchess of Cambridge’s favourite designer, ISSA, went for very straight styles, whereas Felder Felder kept it edgy with a little movement. At Burberry Prorsum hair was worn loose playing up the natural texture and haphazard kinks. So pretty. Burberry

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR JW Anderson Giles

MEET ME HALF WAY When it came to up-do’s things weren’t too polished (this is London, after all),Giles sent his models down the catwalk with their hair duel braided in a half-up, halfdown ‘do. Vivienne Westwood also wowed at her Red Label show. With a shipwrecked siren being the key inspiration, dishevelled hair was pulled into a half-up style creating a beautiful but unconventional look - Young, chic and modern. Do try it at home.

Vivienne Westwood

THE WETTER, THE BETTER Sweat-look locks were rocked at Julien Macdonald where wet-lock gel was applied at the front of the models’ hair but left loose and airy at the back. At David Komo the side-parted, tucked behind the ears, holiday hair continued the trend for wet-look locks and at Sophia Webster’s presentation it was proven that hair dryers weren’t needed in order to create a fashionable look. Think sexy surfer girls.

Christopher Kane

BEST OF THE REST At Christopher Kane, Guido Palau created hair accessories from cable ties, fastening them together as collars or looping them around ponytails. So ladies, you now know what to use when you run out of hair ties. Handy hey? Hair was worn in a cleverly twisted rope ponytail at JW Anderson creating a very simple and chic look. The low texturised ponys at Temperley oozed a flirtatious confidence, whilst at Simone Rocha they were very cool and edgy. Tough glamour at its best! If Mary Katrantzou is anything to go by, remember to save all your Christmas gift ribbons. Stylist, Paul Hanlon, wrapped them round the models’ necks and then tied them in an 11cm bow behind their hair. Well I am all for recycling! Ashley Williams

Sophia Webster

COLOUR BLIND Surprisingly there wasn’t a lot of colour going on at the shows. Except for Fyodor Golan who used subtle shades of pastel, it was pretty much natural hues all the way. I did notice a shift towards eggplant, which normally makes my clients run in the opposite direction.

KEEP YOUR HAT ON Accessorise wise, hats were everywhere, which made me squeal with delight. Well come on, if you really want to stand out from the crowd, a hat is always going to be your best friend. Ashley Wiliams sent red and black pyjama hats down the runway giving her collection a certain Camden Market Gothicism feel. I can’t think of anything better than a funky fashion item, which you can also go to bed in. This girl is a genius I tell you.

Till next time...

Moroccan SISKO AKT PRESENTS

Dream

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSE SERRANO

THIS MONTH, WE BRING YOU A TASTE OF MOROCCO FROM THE GOLDEN DUNES OF THE HEART OF THE SAHARA. BE SEDUCED BY THE CAPTIVATING TRADITIONAL PRINTS, THE EMBROIDERED DETAILS AND THE VIVID TONES THAT TELL A MAGICAL MORROCAN FASHION STORY.

Morocco is a land of blending cultures which has resulted in an exquisite style, where the chaotic fusion of rich colours, exotic spices and seductive scents have attracted innumberable world travelers, top photographers and legendary fashion designers in search of inspiration to inspire their collections. Moroccan apparel has evolved into an era of exotic and eclectic patterns. The desert climate has made it mandatory for loose luxurious pieces, in boldly sophisticated coloured silks and kaftans, which can transition easily from sun beaming desert days to temperature dropping nights. With the falling of the Autumn leaves we abandon the old and start something new. Autumn is the epitomy of change, and this has translated into fashion with one single word: experimenting. Layer unexpected pieces, play with texture and combine prints to create a new outfit everyday with statement garments. This way of dressing requires a certain confidence in your choices, so follow the advice of Andrea and Dominique, in their own styles, to ensure the perfect mix and match. And above all, remember that fashion is fun!

CLASH OF KINGDOMS The trick of mixing prints is to look for a central colour palette. While there are very different and distinctive patterns in this one look, the complementing tones create an adventurous finish. Also, matching up big prints with smaller ones will assure you of a look that is more unified and visually appealing, while still making a strong, but not overwhelming, statement. - Andrea

DIVAS AND DOGS COME TOGETHER FOR CHARITY We attended the glamorous launch party of the Last Chance Animal Rescue charity calendar at the Boardwalk restaurant on Marbella’s Paseo Maritimo

We sipped on cava and strawberries as we perused the venue, eyed up the cheeky calendars and brushed shoulders with Marbella’s movers and shakers.

We dined on a fabulous three-course meal from the Boardwalk’s excellent kitchen as we enjoyed the evening’s entertainment

We watched the ‘behind the scenes footage’ of the making of the calendar, which provided much amusement as there was a brilliant mixture of nudity and naughty dogs as the stunning models posed in risque attire with the cute pooches.

We bought raffle tickets and bid in the superb auction as so many fabulous prizes had been donated - but it wasn’t our lucky night as we didn’t win!

We were delighted though to leave with our fantastic calendars, feeling contented to have contributed to this worthy cause and worthwhile charity.

HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE TO STAY We attended

the spectacular grand opening party of Happy Days Costa del Sol - a mini golf, skate rink and entertainment park for kids on the San Pedro Boulevard.

We enjoyed

a wet and wild afternoon of fun and frolics and and even the rain wasn’t able to dampen our spirits!

We loved

the magnificent entertainment, provided by an all-singing, all-dancing, all-skating troupe of Disney characters from My Party Perfect who kept the children dancing and bouncing about throughout the stormy afternoon.

We enjoyed watching

the the children skate and fall about in heaps of laughter as many of them were learning to ice-skate for the very first time!

We adored

the gorgeous retro silver Airstream that cooked up a feast of hotdogs, nachos and fries for us, providing us with muchneeded sustenance until the evening.

We were thrilled

to see so many happy, smiling faces and it’s fair to say that the adults had as much fun as the children!

A DAY TO REMEMBER 24 HOUR PARTY FOR CUDECA Photos by Nicola Capilli and Purobeach

We headed to

Purobeach to attend local DJ, John Hobbs’ fantastically ambitious 24 hour DJ set in aid of Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice. The hospice constantly faces huge financial challenges as it fights to keep its doors open to the many people who need to use it. Registered as a charity since 1992, Cudeca has evolved over the years to form a comprehensive organisation offering all aspects of palliative care to patients with terminal illnesses without cost to the patient.

We were delighted

to sponsor John for this immense challenge, as he mixed over 400 records to reach his 24hr target, creating a seamless 1-day continuous set to raise funds for the people so desperately in need at Cudeca. It was lovely to see so many friendly faces turn out for this super event, which lasted from 10am on the Friday until 10am on Saturday.

We danced and partied

from morning until night and it seemed like a never-ending party that continued throughout the night as revelers came and went before, during and after sunset and sunrise.

We watched

bikini-clad girls bopping away to tunes throughout the afternoon in the swimming pool and couples sitting arm in arm the next morning watching the sun rise on the horizon.

We were thrilled

to discover that John raised a whopping 6,441,82 – what a wonderful achievement! Congratulations from all of the team at SOCIETY magazine! Euro sign to amount he raised.

SPIRITUAL HEALING We attended

the Mind, Body and Spirit festival at the H10 Andalucia Plaza Hotel, which was organised by the enigmatic Jacinta Anne Hannon

We perused

the great many stalls and stands where experts from all areas of the holistic and spiritual world were displaying their wares and supplying their services. From tarot card readers to reflexologists, healers to clairvoyants and mediums to alternative therapists, the coast’s most trusted and respected spiritual masters were all in attendance.

We enjoyed

some fascinating talks and demonstrations, which included an angel medium demonstration, talks on Kangen Alkaline Water benefits, cellular holistic beauty treatments and galactic healing.

We munched

on delicious veggie wraps filled with hummus, falafels, chilli, marinated aubergine and other yummy vegetable dishes, as well as some delectable raw cacao and coconut balls.

We each chose

different services to try out - one of us had a tarot card reading, one of us enjoyed a delicious massage with essential oils and one of us had our fortune told... we are very excited to find out if it comes true!

We loved

BEER AND BRATWURST AT AMBROSIA We attended the Oktoberfest festival, which ran for four days at Ambrosia Gourmet Market.

We enjoyed a little taste of autumn’s famously extravagant German festival right here in Marbella as Ambrosia had pulled out all the stops; from fabulous German beers to typical German cuisine - all of the decorations and costumes to match.

We loved all of the different beers and the yummy traditional food that each of the stalls had rustled up in order to create a typically German feel.

We adored the waitresses’ pretty German outfits - and wished that we’d dressed up for the occasion too - because everyone who had dressed in traditional German attire was rewarded with free beer and tapas! We’ll just have to dig our outfits out for next year!

A ROOM WITH A VIEW! We attended

the superb relaunch party of Loft and Roomers furnishings on the rooftop of their Mijas store.

We munched

on the tastiest selection of Thaiinspired canapĂŠs, created by the culinary gurus at Gastrogems catering and sipped on champagne and mojitos.

We enjoyed

a night of fabulous entertainment with Roberto Cantero on the saxophone and the legendary Paul Maxwell on the piano and singing a repertoire of old classics with great gusto.

We chatted away,

chilling on sun loungers and stylish sofas with shisha pipes dotted about the stunning rooftop that was illuminated with pretty fairy lights.

We adored

the whole set up and decor, which was effortlessly cool and minimalist yet with a romantic garden party vibe... It felt like the final farewell to summer!

LIMONI EXPANDS ITS HORIZONS

M

arbella’s premium event organisation and party planning company, Limoni is expanding the business to Italy – and in particular Milan, the fashion capital and host of Expo 2015. Although she grew up in Marbella, where she studied at the prestigious Les Roches, hospitality school, Limoni’s founder and director, Jessica de Anais Limoni Garcia has been working in hotels all over the world for the past few years; from London to Dubai and Shanghai to Santo Domingo… but last year we saw her return to her hometown, where she has been planning parties, weddings and exclusive events up and down the coast with Limoni. Since graduating, she’s worked in some of the most exclusive hotels in the world where she learnt so much and gained some invaluable skills and understanding of the hotel industry. Her career began in food and beverages department but when she gained a

position as a wedding organiser at the Dubai Royal Mirage, her wedding and party-planning career really took off! Jessica has partnered up with her longtime friend, the esteemed interior designer, Caterina Ellero D Artegna. Caterina studied at one of the most prestigious universities of Milan Marangoni. The two international businesswomen speak a total of seven languages - Spanish, French, Italian, English, Chinese, Swedish and Danish and will make a formidable team as they arrange some of the most important events and parties in Europe. They are a young team with fresh ideas and bags of energy and determination …and it’s working for them!

The client had a wonderful art collection so they wanted to do an event dedicated to Art. To his collection they added some emerging artists and themed the whole event “Roots for the future” - combining old with new and mixing materials, artwork and plants, giving the idea of growth and prosperity. Caterina designed the interiors whilst Jessica was in charge of the organization and that seems to be the secret to their success.

Travelling and working between Italy and Marbella, they are taking the entertainment and event scene by storm, organising some of the finest parties and most exclusive events around. Their most recent project is for the Popular Bank of Milan.

We can’t wait to hear what they’re up to next!

Each brings their own skills and forte to the table and together they have perfected the recipe to challenging, successful, innovative and fun events that are unique, beautiful and memorable…

THE FIRST NORTH AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN ANDALUSIA.

In the American system, the students need to complete a series of general education courses during the first two years of their studies, in a wide range of disciplines, before they settle in to their definitive college degree. After completing the first two years (or four semesters), students will be able to transfer to Broward College in Ft. Lauderdale or to any university in Florida, where they will complete their degree. This is known as the University Transfer Program, or 2+2. Broward College Broward College is the second largest in Florida and the fifth largest in the United States. Since it was founded in 1960, it has awarded diplomas and degrees to more than 120,000 students from nearly 150 different nationalities. It is ranked among the 10 best community colleges in the United States according to the Aspen Institute, one of the most respected organizations from Washington, D.C.

The prestige of having studied at an American university in order to gain access to the international labor market, plus the possibility of obtaining further work visas in the USA, are advantages that are required by international students every day. The USA occupies the top spot as the chosen destination for college students and the American universities are regarded as being the best in the world. The following are the most popular programs offered by ACS/Broward College at their Marbella campus: 1. University Transfer Program 2+2 As an affiliate of Broward College in Florida, ACS offers a program featuring 2 years of education in Spain plus 2 years in Florida or at any of the universities with whom ACS has agreements. This has become a popular option for our students because it allows them to live in Spain for 2 years followed by 2 years in the U.S. where the students complete their studies at Broward College or at any Florida university. 2. Sports & University Program This has become ACS’s most popular program, especially for students coming from the US and overseas. The program combines intensive soccer training with university education. This program offers our student-athletes the opportunity to train in the most competitive soccer nation while they study under the American university system.

3. GED The General Educational Development (GED) credential is an alternative form of secondary certification in the United States, such as high school. The GED is an interesting and highly recommended option for those students who have not completed their secondary-level studies and want access to a U.S. university. The American College in Spain offers courses that are designed to prepare the students to pass the GED exam.

The Marbella Campus The facilities of the American College in Spain are located in Marbella, in the residential zone of Sierra Blanca, in the heart of the Golden Mile of the Costa del Sol. Our campus has classrooms equipped with the latest technological advances, and are designed for smaller groups, allowing a personal teaching experience and constant supervision for the students by the faculty. Thanks to an agreement between ACS and the Manolo Santana Racquets Club, students can practice and play a variety of different sporting activities, including: tennis, racquetball, general fitness, swimming, and martial arts. The club has 6 tennis courts, 4 racquetball courts, a fitness center, a gymnasium, an aerobic arena, a pool, and a restaurant/ cafĂŠ. The venue for the training sessions of our soccer players is the fantastic and state of the art Marbella Football Center. americancollegespain.comÂ

The Boxster Spyder provides roadster driving in its purest form

94

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the THE BOXSTER SPYDER

95

TORQUE TALK

S

ay Porsche Spyder and most people will assume you are referring to the 918 Spyder, whose towering performance and economy benchmarks have been a highlight of the super sportscar world in the last couple of years. However, there is now a Spyder at the other end of the Porsche range, one whose existence is arguably much more relevant to mere mortals who could never contemplate the 918 Spyder’s Million Dollar price tag. For Porsche, the new Boxster Spyder is a return to first principles, both conceptually and in engineering terms. Where the 918 Spyder is the most complex car that Porsche, or indeed any car manufacturer has ever built, the Boxster Spyder is the back to basics car that many Porsche enthusiasts have been requesting for a very long time. In essence, it is the spiritual successor of the 550 Spyder that gave birth to the genre in 1953. Where the 550 Spyder had a 110hp 1,498cc flat-four motor to propel its 685kg (DIN) kerb weight however, the Boxster Spyder uses the 375hp developed by its 3,800cc flat-six to overcome 1,315kg. Do the math and you find that 6.23 kg/hp plays 3.5 kg/ hp, nearly halving the original cars power-to-weight ratio. That’s progress for you. As they share the same 3,800cc Carrera engine it is inevitable that performance comparisons will be made between the 375hp Boxster Spyder and the 385hp Cayman GT4. The 10hp difference is roughly within production tolerances and is certainly offset by the 25kg extra the GT4 has to carry. Porsche claim 4.4 sec and 4.5 sec respectively for the GT4 and Spyder 0-100km/h sprints, 12.5 and 12.7 sec for the standing quarter mile, and top speeds of 183mph (295km/h) and 180mph (290km/h). Such small differences are splitting hairs in real world driving, but clearly the GT4’s superior 0.32 Cd helps its case as speed increases. If you consider straight line acceleration and top speed acceleration to be largely academic, then the fact that it manages a Nürburgring lap time of 7 min 47.0 sec, just 7.0 sec behind the Cayman GT4 with its motorsport derived front end and 120kg of aerodynamic downforce, is the figure that impresses most.

96

However, what I suspected, and quite quickly confirmed on the familiar country roads around Stuttgart, is that such stopwatch showboating is not what the Boxster Spyder is about. When the sun is shining, dropping the top changes the whole mood in the car for the better. With fresh air and open sky comes a whole new world of possibilities, and it would be heathen not to just go out there and see what today’s drive will bring. From the drivers’ perspective, the 918 Spyder style steering wheel and seats make the car feel special. But from the moment you dip the clutch and snick the shorter gear lever into first gear your fingertips tell you this is going to be a very special driving experience. When I drove the Boxster S in early 2012, I felt that this pretty roadster’s fantastic chassis was laughing at the efforts of the 3.4-litre flat-six to unhinge its grip on dry tarmac. It felt like a car that could handle a lot more power and torque. Even the more powerful GTS that arrived two years later was only just adequate. As the old saying goes, a good big ‘un is always better than a good little ‘un, so when I drove the Cayman GT4 back in April, the unrelenting push of its Carrera S derived 3.8 litre motor told me that Porsche’s mid-engine chassis had finally met its match. Of course when you are driving al fresco, the intensified sensations and closer proximity to the outside world tell you that you do not need as much raw speed to feel you are going as fast. That is certainly the case with the Boxster Spyder, but it is the low and mid-range punch of the bigger engine that you appreciate most when accelerating on the open road. The way the beefier torque curve allows you to finesse the way you set the car up in a bend tells you that this engine and chassis are a fine pairing. At the same time, the sheer, unadulterated satisfaction delivered to your fingertips with every gearshift, and the fluid and tactile steering mark this out as a pure drivers’ car. With the windows rolled down, the Cayman GT4 sounds great, but with no roof at all the Boxster Spyder takes the same throaty soundtrack to a whole new level. It is loud enough to be enjoyed with the exhaust valve in the closed position, but pressing the button

TORQUE TALK

“It is the best and most engaging reasonably priced sportscar I have driven for a long time, and underscores the fact that simplicity and low weight are constant virtues.” on the centre console to open it is an act of pure indulgence best enjoyed on the open road away from politically correct busy bodies who might not appreciate the flat-six concert playing at its enhanced decibel level. Shorn of the run-of-the-mill Boxster’s electro-hydraulic powered roof, the Spyder weighs 30kg less than the GTS version with which it shares its bodyin-white and suspension. The engine, gearbox, roof, front and rear bumpers and spoiler and new, and significantly, that 30kg comes off the highest point in the car, to the benefit of handling and straight-line performance. Fine handling always starts with a stiff structure, and here the basic Boxster provides an exemplary platform. As with Porsche’s current production models, its hybrid steel and aluminium structure uses high-strength steel with the right thickness and profiles in the right places for an optimum strengthto-weight mix. Unlike the first generation Boxster Spyder, the A-pillars and front windscreen are not shortened, so rollover protection is unchanged, as is the torsional stiffness of 17,000 Nm/ degree.

Where the plain vanilla Boxster on 18inch wheels has a drag coefficient of 0.30, this goes up to 0.31 for the Boxster S on 19-inch wheels. The GTS with its 20-inch rubber and extended chin spoiler measures 0.32, but has reduced aerodynamic lift at speed. Using the same 8.5J and 9.5J x 20-inch with 235/35ZR20 and 265/35ZR20 Pirelli PZero rubber as the GTS, but with the more prominent GT4 front spoiler and a larger fixed rear wing to further reduce lift at high speed, the Spyder registers a Cd of 0.33. It is a small sacrifice well worth making. Together with a ride height 10mm lower than the GTS (20mm lower than a stock Boxster), the Cayman GT4 front and rear bumpers and ducktail spoiler, and a longer rear deck with ‘streamliners’, the Spyder takes on a more hunkered down stance and an even higher perceived sense of purpose than the sporty GTS. Against the measuring tape, the Boxster Spyder is 11mm lower overall and 10mm longer than its GTS sibling. The three big front air intakes channel ram air to the radiators, oil cooler and brakes, while the customary GT-style intake between the bumper and

bonnet leading edge sends air past the radiator at an angle that creates a little down force. This latest variation of Michael Mauer’s 981 Boxster is downright gorgeous, and you can imagine that the car is now closer to the original design concept sketches that invariably become watered down as a car is prepared for production. Canvas roofs are not my favourite roadster aesthetic element. While the normal Boxster looks marvellous al fresco, its short, rounded soft-top lacks the sleekness of the 911 Cabriolet’s swooping roofline in weatherproof mode. The new Spyder’s presents a quite different profile to both wind and eye. With its ragtop is in place, the small canvas flying buttresses work with the longer rear deck that feature what Porsche refers to as ‘streamliners’, and the mini ducktail spoiler to create a sleeker, more dynamic look. Operating this manual roof is a doddle. Where the previous iteration required a complex and sometimes nail-breaking process involving a few traditional pressstuds, the engineers have now devised a simpler, user-friendly format.

97

TORQUE TALK

Importantly, where the old Spyder hood was only good to 200km/h, the new one is certified right up to the cars 290km/h top speed. The hood frame’s lightweight construction uses aluminium, magnesium and plastic with some high strength steel elements. The rear window is polymer and therefore unheated, and shorn of insulation, lining and acoustic treatment materials the whole construct saves 10kg over the normal Boxster roof. The mesh windbreak that sits between the rollover hoops is an option. Step one, disengaging the latch from the windscreen frame, is now electrically initiated at the touch of a button, and also releases the lock of the long rear deck. Then you have to step out of the car and press the hidden buttons on the oval profiled catches in the flying buttresses to release them from the rear deck. This takes a little learning at first, but your fingertips soon develop a muscle memory for the placement of this hidden button. You then have to twist the freed flying buttress canvas sections through 90 degrees and park the catches in their stowage slots in the vertical part of the roof. Fully open the rear deck, fold the canvas roof flat, close the deck, push the hood cover flaps home, and you are done. Re-erecting the hood is the reverse process. While its sounds complicated on paper, compared to the 15 steps

98

required for raising or lowering the old roof, operating the new one is a relative doddle, for which Porsche say that the time required has dropped from three minutes to just one. Porsche touted the Cayman GT4 as a road legal track day machine. The Boxster Spyder on the other hand is a fun road car that is also at home on the racetrack. There is no wider 991 GT3 front end here however. The suspension, wheels and tyres are straight from the Boxster GTS and PCCB ceramic brakes are an option. Porsche have always been clever with their extensive parts bin and the Boxster Spyder is another example of this ingenuity, and also how they can help to make limited edition projects like the 2,000 units of Cayman GT4 pay off. The logic is impeccable. Since many bespoke components had to be made to fit the Carrera motor to the Cayman/Boxster platform, why not make a Boxster Spyder using most of these parts as well? The potential economies of scale of this component share formula must have been as appealing to the cost accountants as it was to the engineers. The difference in tune between the Carrera S motor in the Boxster Spyder and Cayman GT4 is more than just about 10hp. It is also about tailoring the ECU mapping to the two cars quite different characters.

TORQUE TALK

99

TORQUE TORQUE TALK TALK

Where the GT4 motor makes 385hp at 7,400rpm and 420Nm between 4,750 and 6,000rpm, the Spyder tune has the same torque characteristics, but with its peak power of 375hp arriving at just 6,700rpm for a less hard-core persona. Just to recap, in the Boxster/Cayman installation, the Carrera S motor is turned through 180-degrees, some modifications are made to the block, and most of the supply line connections are reworked. The new intake manifold and exhaust system are bespoke as there is less headroom in the mid-engine installations. A corollary of this is shorter intake manifold runners with less ram effect at high speed, although on the positive side, mid-range torque is boosted slightly. Another reason that the Spyder has less power is that it lacks the GT4’s extended side blades around the side intakes that create more ram air effect when the car is moving. On the 911, the exhaust goes straight out the back, but the Boxster/Cayman exhaust has to navigate a more

100

circuitous route over the driveshafts, creating more backpressure in the process. These constraints are responsible for the engine’s drop from the 400hp when it is installed in the Carrera S, despite the ECU mapping being adjusted for all the new physical parameters.

Purists will note that the Boxster Spyder options list states that the audio system and air-conditioning, which weight 20kg more are not standard, but are no-cost options. This is the opposite of the Cayman GT4 where they are standard but can be deleted at no cost.

Fitted with dynamic mounts that firm up when the car is driven sportingly, the six-speed manual Getrag gearbox contains a mechanical limited slip differential with a 22/27-percent locking action on acceleration and over-run.

Also in the cabin, the 360mm 918 Spyder style steering wheel is straight from the Cayman GT4. The design of the lightweight carbon-fibre backed seats is also from the Boxster Spyder’s big brother, proportioned to fit the Boxster. In the US, the car comes with normal Porsche sports seats standard, but you can have the ROW style fitted aftermarket.

The gear lever is 20mm shorter than the one on the Cayman GTS, and is fitted with Porsche Motorsport’s shortshift linkage. The gearshift quality is a pinnacle achievement in terms of its weight and throw, and the pedals are perfectly positioned for heel and toe downshifts. Originally crafted by Andreas Preuninger’s GT development team in Weissach, the linkage is totally bronze bushed, and has almost no variation in shift quality whether the gearbox is cold or hot.

The Boxster Spyder is the roadster that many enthusiasts, myself included, always hoped Porsche would make. It is the best and most engaging reasonably priced sportscar I have driven for a long time, and underscores the fact that simplicity and low weight are constant virtues.

A Home from Home By Hayley Reed, Founder of Foc Design

HOME HOME COUTURE COUTURE

The projects that we undertake are so varied here at FOC Design and our team members are constantly inspired and continually kept on their toes. We are fortunate enough to work on both residential and commercial designs and this requires us to keep our fingers on the pulse with the always evolving interior world, making sure our input is fresh and unique, not monotonous or repetitive.

111

HOME COUTURE

One of our favourite commercial projects of the year was Olivia’s La Cala. Not only because we got to know the cheeky restaurateur and Towie celeb Elliott Wright, but we also got to work with someone who had some very clear and distinctive ideas that needed shaping and bringing together, to create the winning venue for him to bring his fresh and luxurious approach to beachside dining. The restaurant is very sweetly named after his beautiful little daughter Olivia and Elliott was keen that it was not just the name that reflected how close he is to his children; he wanted the entire atmosphere of the restaurant to have a family feel and a friendly approach. Olivia loves her girlie colours (don’t we all!) and this was key in the planning of the colour scheme. Soft lavenders, champagnes and soft greys were suggested to work with the driftwood style flooring and the close association with Moët Chandon Ice. The muted, pallid tones do not feel

112

HOME COUTURE

insipid or washed-out, rather the mix makes the place feel harmonious and elegant, but eliminates the monotony and repetition of the many chairs any restaurant must have. Chrome studding and chair knockers add luxury and the gold Herringbone glass mosaic recesses for the champagne add the glam. Although it was already a well-known restaurant prior to the transformation, the venue had been furnished quite heavily, with a lot of use of darker colours. The space had also been segregated and divided up into small nooks and poorly lit corners, and seemed to almost ignore its stunning and unique location! The team’s first challenge was to open up the place, to remove the awkward dividing walls and allow the place to be flooded with natural light and the breathtaking view of the beach. Elliott’s idea of changing the front of the entire restaurant to glass was the first step of a total transformation. By eliminating the shadows and unnecessary recesses and alcoves, we then had an open plan in which to create our design of drama and elegance.

113

HOME COUTURE

The real individuality of this project is created by the fact that there are so many unique dining sections, but still a seamless link of style and charm throughout. For those long lazy summer evenings, the softly lit terrace with its own contemporary tiki-inspired bar is ideal, whilst for the more wintery nights the main dining area feels homely and cozy without feeling stuffy. The “piece de resistance to what already is a stunning mix of materials and tones, soft lighting and friendly atmosphere is the VIP champagne lounge. With its 180-degree views over the sea to Gibraltar and even Africa on a clear day, this second floor space really is a little gem. We have leant towards a more night-time feel for the upstairs, and a more relaxed lounge ambience. The chunky blowup Chesterfield club chairs and the mix of funky gold and white dining chairs are fun and instill the party atmosphere for this entirely separate level with its own

private terrace. The use of stainless steel and glass allows for uninterrupted views of the downstairs dining area and the beautiful beach. After all the elements came together and all of the professional tradesman pulled their weight, Olivia’s La Cala has been launched and the only thing that matches the interiors is the friendly service and the exquisite menu and cocktails. Whether you are local or a holidaymaker, the combination of design, great food and live music is well worth a visit. It really was a pleasure to design, but now it’s complete, our visits are now to wine and dine and the pleasure is still all mine! FOC Design. ROCKY ROAD

Our resident food and nutrition guru, Bettina brings us a scrumptious and nutritious recipe you can try at home

(THE HEALTHY WAY)

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 cup (240 grams) of Coconut oil 3 tbs of very good Cacao powder 3-4 tbs of Maple syrup or Agave syrup 1 tbs of Almonds (chopped) 6 Dates (the softer the better) 1 tsp of Goji berries 1 tbs of Peanut butter Orange peel

Melt the coconut oil in a bowl over hot water - when it is melted add cacao powder and maple/agave. * Line a rectangular sandwich box (thats what I use) with baking paper and add a layer of your chocolate mix. * Add a layer of goodies - dates (I like to tear them up) gojis, nuts, and random dollops of peanut butter.

Add another layer (the rest of your mix) and any leftover of the toppings. Sprinkle a tiny bit of Himalayan on top, cinnamon and spread some orange peel on the top. The size of this bar is like the size of a normal chocolate bar just a bit thicker. * Put it the fridge to set - when you are ready to try some or serve cut with a hot knife to make pretty pieces.

Pinch of Himalayan salt Pinch of Cinnamon (optional)

t’s hard to believe that La Sala celebrates its fifth birthday this year! For whilst it is still the busiest most bustling spot around, boasting all of the excitement and energy of a newly opened venue, its reputation as one of THE places to see and be seen, and its growing fame that has made it synonymous with Puerto Banús and the Marbella lifestyle, mean that it has already become a Marbella institution. Whether it’s Friday cocktails with the girls, a breakfast business meeting, a leisurely lunch on the terrace or live music and dancing on wild Saturday nights, La Sala caters for everyone and for every occasion – and I believe that herein lies the restaurant’s success. There are live singers, musicians and bands – and there are children’s menus, crayons and colouring-in sheets. Sometimes you’ll find a saxophonist or a violinist playing away passionately on top of the bar to rapturous applause, or a belly dancer shimmying around the room as diners look on in wonder. There are couples gazing into each other’s eyes on romantic dates and there are parties of golfers having the time of their lives. Of course it is become a favourite spot with celebrities, footballers and reality TV stars, which gives it that added ‘WOW’ factor because you never quite know who you’re going to bump into and, whether it’s chatting to the girls from TOWIE whilst reapplying your lipstick in the bathroom,

124

or attempting to appear inconspicuous as you peek out from behind your menu to gaze at Ashley Cole dining two tables away, (yes, I’ve done both of the above!) a night at La Sala is never short of entertainment and excitement. Although it’s most popular as an evening venue, it’s also a great place to start the day. Breakfast offers everything from a simple toast or fruit salad to a full English fry-up or a chic Eggs Benedict, so whether I’m hungry or simply in need of my morning caffeine fix, La Sala’s sunny terrace is often where I greet the day, reading the morning news (and my emails!). Also, every weekday, La Sala offers free cava to all lunching ladies and its set lunch menu is always a great value option. Of course the valet parking means that you can just hand your keys over without having to fret and fuss. It’s also widely regarded as the most popular spot for birthdays: the team brings out a personalised brownie, topped with chocolate sauce, strawberries, the birthday girl’s (or boy’s) name spelt out in cream and a giant sparkler fizzing and cracking accompanied by the staff belting out ‘Happy Birthday’. The atmosphere is always buzzing, the staff are friendly and smiling and it’s got that relaxed yet upbeat vibe that means that you can easily while away the afternoon in the sunshine over lunch with friends and family, and later find yourself on the dance floor, singing along

with the band until the early hours of the morning. It’s fun, it’s friendly and there’s always something going on. Then of course there’s the food… from salads to steaks, fish and chips to gambas pil-pil and burgers to stir fries there is something to suit every taste and palate. Whether you fancy a light bite or a threecourse meal, La Sala’s menu offers a wide variety of international dishes from all corners of the globe… everything, it would seem, except for a traditional Sunday roast. Until now, that is. The launch of La Sala’s Sunday roasts managed to coincide exactly with Marbella’s first wintery day of the autumn. The rain had been falling heavily all night long and the view from my bedroom window was dismal as I awoke to grey skies, drizzle and thick, dark clouds looming overhead. Oh, if ever there was a Sunday to remain in bed it was today! But, having spent the past four days on a ‘juice cleanse’, I had been excitedly anticipating breaking the fast since receiving my invitation to La Sala’s inaugural Sunday lunch. So, we dragged ourselves up and out and ventured into the cold, sombre daylight.

COSTA CUISINE

We pulled up at La Sala soon after 1pm and, at first glance, I thought we might be the only ones to have braved the elements as the wet terrace was deserted. But, as the doors swung open, we were hit by the sounds of laughter, music, singing, plates clattering, glasses tinkering and loud jovial voices chattering – I had NEVER EVER seen it so busy at this time. Waiters and waitresses hurried past me with plates and dishes piled high and the smell was heavenly. There were parties enjoying aperitifs at the bar as local singing sensation, Zoe Louise’s dulcet tones resonated from the stage where she was singing a repertoire of soulful favourites, and every table in the dining room and conservatory was filled with satisfied diners tucking into their roast dinners. We were led to the private dining room and the attentive waitresses were quick to bring out a box of plasticine and crayons for my little monkey as they served our drinks and processed our orders. The rain continued to fall… the live music played on throughout the afternoon… and dish after dish appeared from La Sala’s bustling open-plan kitchen. Yes, we enjoyed the most fabulously indulgent rainy Sunday afternoon imaginable! We later on found out that it was La Sala’s busiest Sunday lunch on record and whilst it was a hive of activity, the service never faltered and the head chef, James even spared a moment from the kitchen to come out and meet us and check that everything was to our liking.

The starters comprised a Homemade Vegetable Soup, a Smoked Salmon, Avocado and Horseradish Crème Fraiche Parcel, Paté on Toast and a scrumptious dish of Mushrooms on Toast, Tarragon and Cream served on Toasted Ciabatta with Truffle Oil and shaved Pecorino. We shared these between us and suffice to say that there was something to tickle each of our tastebuds. Then came the main courses, which were piled high upon the plates with fluffy Yorkshire Puddings poised delicately on the top - it was a vision to behold. There was Roast Beef with Horseradish, Roast Chicken served with Chipolata Sausages wrapped in Bacon, Sage and Onion stuffing, mustard and cranberry sauces, Roast Pork with Apple Sauce – and of course all of them came with Roast Potatoes and a selection of vegetables that included braised red cabbage, honey roast parsnips, sautéed green beans, buttered carrots and a delicious gratinated cauliflower cheese. And gravy, lashings and lashings of gravy. For the veggies there were pasta options and there was also a yummy Roast Salmon with all of the trimmings. We tucked in, briskly at first, but then slower and slower as we savoured the many tastes and delicious combinations. The wine flowed, as did the conversation, and I took notes as the monkey tucked into yet another roast potato drenched in gravy. The sun was beginning to break through the clouds as our puddings arrived: Sticky Toffee Pudding with Hot Toffee Sauce, Chocolate Brownie, a Plate of Fresh Fruit with Mint and

Yoghurt Dip and my favourite – Iced Berries with Hot White Chocolate Sauce. The Brownie was sweet and gooey as it should be, the fruit, fresh and the yoghurt was the perfect accompaniment. The Sticky Toffee Pudding is to die for, but my waistband wouldn’t allow me this decadence, so I only dared a mouthful before moving on to the berries, which were cold and sharp, but melted in the mouth when dipped in the warm hot chocolate. A round of applause erupted as Zoe’s set finished and the James Brown Band took to the stage for the evening’s entertainment. Evening? How long had we been here? Thanking our exceptional waiting staff we stepped out into the early evening sunshine, where the clouds were clearing and making way for a spectacular sunset. “Just in time!” cried out the monkey and we wandered down to the paseo where we sauntered leisurely along the promenade to watch the sun set (and to digest our mamouth meal!). Despite the stormy weather and incessant rain, we concluded that the hearty food, jovial atmosphere, superb music and friendly faces of La Sala had rewarded us with the most perfect antidote to a rainy Sunday afternoon… and to think, I almost stayed in bed!

CLASSIC

PAIRING at D-Wine

Barolo has been called the “king of wines,” and the “wine of kings.” Barolo is a deliciously rich and deep red wine, very dry, high in acidity, alcohol and tannin, made from the unique Nebbiolo grape in the Piedmont region of North West Italy.

Barolo is world famous for its rich finesse that can be as fragrant as a rose or as savory as black truffles. It is a pale yet powerful red that can be extremely coveted thanks to its mysterious ability to reflect the character of its individual terrain.

Barolo wine and kobe steak... Pure decadence courtesy of Julio at D-Wine

True-blooded Barolos, always demand years in the cellar. In its youth, it is classically tannic and austere, but given time, often a decade or more, the tannins soften, releasing a gorgeous perfume and flavors often described as licorice, tar, truffles, violets and roses.

D-WINE DISH OF THE MONTH Kobe Steak from the Tajima strain of Wagyu cattle, raised in Japan according to strict rules. This meat is a delicacy renowned for its flavor, tenderness and well-marbled texture. Kobe beef is considered the quintessence of fine dining for meat lovers. Kobe is the king of prime beef raised in feeding farms on a diet of nutrition-rich feed supplements resulting in its superior flavor, tenderness and high amount of intramuscular fat, providing a marbled appearance. Rumor has it, that Tajima-gyu virgin cows from which the kobe beef comes from, are given a special treatment including listening to music, a daily body massage and beer to drink.

D-WINE ADVICE Fatty meat works great with bold red wines that have high tannin so we have selected five top range Muscular Barolos from Italian Piemontese wine country, drinking beautifully now, to match Prime Kobe beef. Tannins of Barolo work as a palate cleanser to complement the melting fattiness of first class Kobe commonly cooked medium- rare to retain maximum flavor for the inside of our mouths. Barolo nips the taste buds and enhances an exquisite dining experience. Kobe Beef & Barolo is a wine & food pairing made in heaven delivering considerable pleasure and ultimate finesse.

‘TO TAPA OR NOT TO TAPA’ is Never a Question

This November, Ambrosia is delighted to be holding a Ruta de Tapas! Every stall in the gourmet market will be entering this one-day event, and will compete for the prize of the ‘best tapa’ in the market. Members of the public are welcome to enjoy this fabulous gastronomic event and to sample some of the finest cuisine Ambrosia has to offer and there will also be a chance for the public to join our panel of judges and vote for their favourite dish! In addition to the members of the public who will form half of the judging panel, there will be international chefs who have been invited to judge the competition and who will no doubt deliver their expert opinion. There will be scorecards and tapas descriptions and the whole day should be a wonderful culinary journey of tastes and combinations and judging the best tapa in the competition will

probably be a deliciously difficult job as the food is outstanding and no doubt the tapas will be exquisite. Since Ambrosia’s inauguration it has been the meeting point for local foodies and also a great venue for entertainment and diverse culinary and cultural events and soirees. From flamenco shows to jamon Serrano cutting – we’ve attended a great variety of exciting festivals, shows and competitions and, whether it’s to celebrate food, Andalucía or Spanish culture and heritage, Ambrosia offers an enticing as well as fun and informative array of events that that never fail to impress and entertain. ambrosiamercadogourmet.es

GETS SOCIETY FIT! By Natalie Rose Kern

A

fter months of complaining about our dwindling fitness levels and our expanding waistlines we’ve finally done it. We’ve got ourselves a personal trainer and we are determined to get fit and into shape. The SOCIETY girls lead very busy social lives and are a strange breed of workaholics, so when we’re not in the office we’re wining and dining, and when we’re not attending functions we’re writing from home... all in all we don’t exercise. At all. Ever. So this is where Luke came in to help us.

We set a date and decide to head down to Mistral Beach for a taster class to see what we’ve let ourselves in for. Joined by women of all ages and sizes, we’re all eager (and a little apprehensive!) to find out what’s in store for us.

Luke is a personal trainer and fitness fanatic with a passion for working out and staying fit and healthy. He’s come to meet us in the office and I feel relieved that we don’t have to scurry around hiding our junk food from him as the whole office is currently ‘juicing’.

Slowly at first. So slowly that I fool myself momentarily into thinking it’s going to be a walk in the park. Walking, bending, stretching... so far so good. But then the exercises become harder, we push a bit further, I can feel the burn and become aware of muscles I’d forgotten even existed. And then comes the fun part. I say that with sarcasm... because it was really hard. But I actually mean it quite genuinely - because it really was great fun.

“How’s that going for you then, girls? You enjoying it?” He takes one look at the murky green juices on the table and our pained expressions and laughs. “I’m going to get you into shape and it’s going to be fun. Ok, it might hurt a little at first but it’ll get easier and I guarantee you’ll get the results you’re after!” I’m apprehensive. Guaranteed results? His new venture, Miss Fit is a women-only boot camp designed especially for the female form. Using a mixture of circuit training, resistance, free weights and fast cardio bursts he holds fun, energetic classes on the beach where women can work out in the fresh air and get toned, trim and healthy. I explain that I haven’t done any proper exercise in months but he’s unfazed. The boot camp is an intense 6-week course of one hour-a-day of training. The first week might be a little tricky, but after that apparently we’ll be flying.

Luke and his brother, Gary, talk us through the session and the course, outlining how they intend to train us, which muscles we should be using and how to get the most benefit out of each exercise. And then we begin.

A circuit training course has been set out with dumbbells, resistance elastics, battle ropes, climbing walls, heavy balls and all kinds of other gym equipment strategically positioned about the beach and we partner up and take our stations. We then proceed to power our way around the circuit at full speed. Lifting, lunging, pulling, pushing, sit-ups, press-ups... it’s fast and furious and dreadful and brilliant. Cheered on by our fellow female friends and by Luke and Gary who holler encouragement, spurring us on to push harder and to “Keep going!” we laugh and sweat and ache and do not stop until it’s over. There’s a real feeling of camaraderie, a ‘we’re all in this together’ attitude that makes us persevere and keep going until the bitter end. And there’s laughter. So much laughter that I’m not sure whether it’s the sit-ups or the giggling that’s making my tummy hurt.

Miss Fit is a women’s only boot camp designed especially for the female form. Using a mixture of circuit training, resistance, free weights and fast cardio bursts

We finish the session with a sprinting, jumping, sit-up-ing routine that consists of pairing up and then taking turns to run back and forth, hit the ground, press up, burpee, run back, hit the ground, sit up... you get the idea! Of course I pair up with my SOCIETY magazine superstar designer, Connie and we were determined to win. “On your marks, get set, go!!!” Luke calls out and we hit the ground running. Cheers erupt as we scream and shout, encouraging each other, “Go Connie! Go! Go! Go! You can do it” Sand sprays up behind us as we run and jump, cool sea breeze on our faces and the sound of our comrades cheering, ringing in our ears… and then, just like that, it’s all over. We hug, high on adrenaline and excitement and cry with laughter as we bend double to catch our breath, hands on knees, panting and chuckling. Was it as bad as I’d anticipated? Not in the slightest. In fact, I actually enjoyed it. We all did. Let the boot camp begin! Miss Fit Marbella missfit.es +34 602 529 553 infomarbella@missfit.es

SO, WHAT’S THIS ALL ABOUT THEN? Organic. Bio. Ecological. Unless you’ve been living in a cave feeding off stick insects I’m pretty convinced you’ve heard these words before – but do you REALLY know what they mean? You see, as far as I can tell, the essence behind those concepts has been completely prostituted to comply with market trends, demands and bureaucracy. We’ve lost track of a process because we’ve just been sold the end product and, quite frankly, we’ve got things pretty wrong - again. Let’s backtrack a little. Mention the word ‘organic’ and what springs to mind? Clean food. Ok, yes, that’s the result – but surely by now we all know it’s not all about results, it’s the taking part that counts and THIS, I’m afraid, is where the majority of ‘healthy, conscious’ eaters falter. How organic is it to ship ‘organic’ mangoes from Brazil? Or beef from Argentina? Or salmon from Norway?“I consider it more capricious than organic to create a carbon footprint, pay import/export fees and detract from

one’s own economy while also adding the wonderful (note of sarcasm) nitrous oxide that is sprayed all over food to preserve it during transportation. Lest we forget, the ‘organic’ certification is granted BEFORE shipping takes place. Hardly ecological!” Km 0 is my latest venture. It’s what I consider a truly organic establishment. ALL our suppliers are local – as is the produce they sell us. Bar a few drinks absolutely everything you eat at Km 0 is locally sourced, organic and 100% homemade. No jars, no processed food, no chemicals, no short cuts. We cook from scratch using fresh LOCAL organic ingredients to offer a colourful, quirky and original diverse menu from breakfast straight through to dinner. Grass fed beef, wild fish, raw and vegan dishes with the added plus of almost everything being gluten free. We believe in supporting our local economy, we believe in using what our land has to offer and we believe that nothing tastes as good as home cooking does.Home is where the heart is, and our heart is in Km 0. SKIN BEAUTY Secrets

Unveiled at Six Senses Spa Marbella in Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa On 15 October, Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa together with Six Senses Marbella organized an Expert talk and invited Dr. Eric Schulte, CEO of QMS Medicosmetics, which recently won the best spa products in the world award. The Talk began at 7pm in the Sea Grill restaurant, starting with some exquisite canapés and drinks before the doctor started sharing his expertise over 25 years transforming the world of skincare. He started his career working in trauma surgery in his home country of Germany, where he was a specialist in wound healing, leading him to constantly seek the latest innovations in the beauty sector. Dr. Schulte discovered that introducing natural collagens could boost the skin and enhance its appearance and wellbeing, so he decided to focus completely on the research of new skincare products, founding QMS Medicosmetics.
